<lb />Opinion<lb /><lb />Racial profiling<lb />infects society<lb /><lb />Stereotypes run deep<lb /><lb />ELISE PHILLIPS<lb />PULSE EDITOR<lb /><lb />The other day as I was riding the bus, I noticed something that<lb />I have heard a lot about in classes and in the news, but had never<lb />experienced directly.<lb /><lb />Sitting right across from me was a beautiful Middle Eastern woman,<lb /><lb />wearing traditional clothing with her head wrapped tightly. I had seen.<lb /><lb />women like this before, mostly on television, but also in America. However,<lb />I noticed something different this time.<lb /><lb />As I looked into the woman Ts brown eyes, I saw something disturbing;<lb />I saw an almost shameful fear in her eyes.<lb /><lb />I looked around and saw all of the other passengers on the bus trying<lb />to steal a glance of the woman, but she continued to stare intently at the<lb />floor, with that look in her eyes.<lb /><lb />I started to wonder if maybe she was feeling out of place, or maybe she<lb />was feeling that the other passengers were thinking that she was a terror-<lb />ist. Maybe that Ts why her eyes portrayed the feeling that they did.<lb /><lb />Why in America do people judge others based on their race?<lb /><lb />It Ts probably an age-old question, but it seems that there are many<lb />stereotypes for different races in the United States, despite how open-<lb />minded some people consider themselves to be.<lb /><lb />African-Americans are viewed as criminals, Caucasians as wealthy<lb />and privileged, some Asians are portrayed as intelligent, while others are<lb />considered only goo oenough to work in a nail salon. American Indians<lb />are portrayed as drug addicts or alcoholics, Hispanics as non-English-<lb />speaking construction workers and Middle Easterners as terrorists.<lb /><lb />At ECU, I have noticed that even college students, a new generation<lb />of Americans, are still engaging in these racial stereotypes.<lb /><lb />For the most part students still tend to socialize primarily with people<lb />of the same race. id :<lb /><lb />Why does this type of thinking still govern in today Ts society?<lb /><lb />Maybe the media perpetuates these ideas, or perhaps these ideas are<lb />so deeply ingrained in our mindsets that they can Tt be removed.<lb /><lb />Maybe humans like to find people who are different from them to<lb />find fault with.<lb /><lb />The US is not the only country to have problems between races. Just<lb />look at the struggle in Iran between the Kurds and Iranians as yet another<lb />example of how racial profiling plagues today Ts society.<lb /><lb />Although the aforementioned racial struggles resulted in war, the<lb />stereotypes that we assign races in the US can be just as deadly.<lb /><lb />For a country that prides itself on freedom. and independence, we<lb />are oppressing certain ethnicities with our closed-minded molds of their<lb />expected behavior.<lb /><lb />Maybe my writing on this subject is not even worth the time. Will<lb />our country ever change?<lb /><lb />Maybe not, but I know that keeping quiet about these injustices will<lb />only further them.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />{ www.theeastcarolinian.com }<lb /><lb />WEDNESDAY MAY 23, 2007<lb /><lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />I Tm not even in school this summer<lb /><lb />and | still read the pirate rants!!!<lb /><lb />PAGE 5<lb /><lb />GENILY<lb /><lb />oe<lb />MERRIDY HOY MERRIE MERRILY, Nea<lb /><lb />DREAM...<lb /><lb />The East Carolinian does not endorse statements made in Pirate<lb /><lb />Rants. Shrek 3, which opened<lb />last weekend, is anticipated to<lb />be the grand winner of them all.<lb />While financial competition will<lb />definitely not be a problem for<lb />the film, the movie also gives its<lb />cinematic competitors more than<lb />ample competition with a beauti-<lb />ful arsenal of a well-written and<lb />hilarious screenplay, great vocal<lb />acting and hypnotic animation.<lb /><lb />The movie continues the story<lb />line left open by the previous film,<lb /><lb />Shrek 2. A reluctant Shrek and his<lb /><lb />' wife Fiona try to cope with the rig-<lb /><lb />orous demands of blossoming roy-<lb />alty, all the while aided by their loyal<lb />friends Puss in Boot and Donkey.<lb /><lb />Shrek 3 is marvelously well<lb />written. Most animated movies<lb />exist purely for the Saturday after-<lb />noon entertainment of children and<lb />offer little thought, just mindless<lb />filler intertwined with a few jokes<lb />and a dash of pretty colors.<lb /><lb />Shrek, on the other hand, shines<lb />with intelligently conceived jokes<lb />that appeal to all ages and a flow-<lb />ing storyline that transitions<lb />wonderfully from the previous<lb />two films. The jokes are without a<lb />doubt what make the film what it is.<lb /><lb />The main reason people see the<lb />film is because of the hilarious and<lb /><lb />intelligent jokes that seem to never<lb /><lb />run out of comedic steam. However, many<lb />student apartments in Greenville<lb />offer a combined bill.<lb /><lb />So which is better, the dorms or<lb />student apartments?<lb /><lb />Some students genuinely enjoy<lb />living in a dorm.<lb /><lb /> oLiving on campus is great.<lb />I Tve met so many great friends, and<lb />everything is so close. While a replacement<lb />will fill the needs of the team in<lb />the short run, not even the best<lb />coach can establish the relation-<lb />ship that Thompson had with his<lb />line. Thompson had close ties<lb />with many of his young defensive<lb />linemen, and even recruited some<lb />of them.<lb /><lb />As a defensive lineman and<lb />three-year letter winner at the Uni-<lb />versity of Connecticut, Thompson<lb />knew how to relate to his big men<lb />in the trenches; he Ts been there<lb /><lb />Hurry Dh... Before playing at<lb />UConn, Thompson was a four-<lb />year letter winner as a defensive<lb />lineman at Bogalusa High School<lb />in Bogalusa, La. Immediately after<lb />graduating from UConn, Thomp-<lb />son joined the Huskies coaching<lb />staff as a linebackers and defensive<lb />ends coach.<lb /><lb />One defensive lineman that<lb />truly thrived under Thompson<lb /><lb />-was 6 feet 5, 277 pound, defensive<lb /><lb />end Marcus Hands. Going into his<lb />junior season, Hands, once rated<lb />as the 40th best defensive end<lb /><lb />nationally by Phil Steele Maga--<lb /><lb />zine, must now become the leader<lb />of an inexperienced and embattled<lb />line without his mentor.<lb /><lb />Of all the defensive linemen<lb />listed on the ECU football spring<lb />roster, nine are underclassmen. Of<lb />the five seniors on the roster only 6<lb />feet 3, 286 pound, Mark Robinson<lb />has seen significant playing time<lb />going into the 2007 season. He<lb />is projected as the starting nose<lb />guard, while fellow senior Wen-<lb />dell Chavis is listed as his primary<lb />backup..<lb /><lb />Similar to Hands, junior stand-<lb />out defensive end Zach Slate has<lb />been mentored by Thompson<lb /><lb />during his career at ECU. The<lb />success of the line is in the hands<lb />of these emerging players, as well<lb />as UNC transfer and playmaker<lb />Khalif Mitchell. .<lb /><lb />The Pirates rush defense<lb />has improved. with the<lb />maturation of Slate and Hands,<lb />but also the arrival of Thompson.<lb />When Thompson joined the pro-<lb />gram with Holtz in 2005, ECU Ts<lb />rush defense was one of the worst<lb />in the nation. In the wake of the<lb />John Thompson disaster, Holtz<lb />knew that the team could not win<lb />until it improved on both sides of<lb />the line.<lb /><lb />Success was slow to come,<lb />as the 4005 Pirates were last in<lb />C-USA in rushing defense, sur-<lb />rendering an astounding 217.6<lb />yards per game on the ground.<lb />ECU was only slightly better in<lb />the red zone, where strength on the<lb />defensive line is really tested. The<lb />Pirates surrendered points to their<lb />opponents 84.4 percent of the time<lb />the team was in the red zone.<lb /><lb />In 2006 ECU jumped from 12th<lb />to 6th in the conference in rushing<lb />defense, allowing only 145.2 yards<lb />per game on the ground. Even<lb />more astounding was the Pirates<lb />red zone defense. ECU moved up<lb />from 10th in the league to 2nd,<lb />giving up a score only 76.7 percent<lb />of the time their opponent was in<lb />the red zone.<lb /><lb />Time will tell if the Pirates will<lb />be significantly affected by the loss<lb />of the most respected and experi-<lb />enced assistant on Holtz Ts staff. To<lb />find any short term indication of<lb />his loss just look ahead to the end<lb />of next season and note where the<lb />téam stands in rushing defense. In<lb />the long run though, the program<lb />will truly be able to tell if this was<lb />merely a minor setback or a giant<lb />leap back.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Mark A.
