<p>Opinion<lb /><lb />The break is over<lb /><lb />Summer sessions provide little time off<lb /><lb />SARAH CAMPBELL<lb />EDITOR IN CHIEF<lb /><lb />For those attending summer school this year the break is over. Gone<lb />are the endless summer days filled with dozens of opportunities in which<lb />to spend free time, gone are the nights of partying until the sun comes<lb />up and sleeping until noon. That Ts right, believe it or not some of us<lb />actually have to face the harsh reality that school is back in session.<lb /><lb />After a mere 12 days of vacation time students began their trek back<lb />to campus for the start of classes yesterday. :<lb /><lb />No matter where one looked around campus solemn faces seemed<lb />to fill the air and it was evident that everyone was dreading the next<lb />four weeks.<lb /><lb />For those attending both summer sessions the end is even further<lb />out of sight. As there is no break at all between the first and second<lb />summer sessions. Exams take place on Wednesday, June 20 and classes<lb />start up again on Thursday, June 21.<lb /><lb />Students don Tt even have one day off to enjoy the frills of summer<lb />such as an afternoon by the pool or a cookout with friends and family<lb />before they begin plunging into their studies full force.<lb /><lb />Sure, some may argue that students in summer session are only<lb />taking a maximum of six credit hours, but with the freedom of summer<lb />also comes the obligation of work. Many students begin working longer<lb />hours in order to earn more money to use throughout the upcoming<lb />year.<lb /><lb />For those students who find themselves feeling the daily grind, the:<lb />lack of break between summer sessions may leave students feeling even<lb /><lb />more exhausted after summer than they were before.<lb />The only point throughout the summer in which students will truly<lb /><lb />find themselves being able to take a break is when the second summer.<lb /><lb />session draws to an end on Friday, July 27 before the fall semester begins<lb />on Wednesday, August 22.<lb /><lb />Despite the shorter period of time in which students will be enrolled<lb />in classes, the workload is often doubled. An increase in work can often-<lb />times lead to more headaches for students who are trying to carry a full<lb />course load, work full-time and still take time out to have fun.<lb /><lb />The lack of a break between summer sessions not only causes stu-<lb />dents to feel more stressed out during a time in which they should be<lb />relaxing, it also keeps many students from visiting family or taking a<lb />much needed vacation from the daily stressors of life.<lb /><lb />Maybe those professors teaching second summer session will give<lb />students the break they deserve by assigning minimal coursework to be<lb />done outside of class and offering a number of optional days throughout<lb />the semester, but the more likely reality is that students will have to<lb /><lb />suffer through two months of hard work only to get a one month break<lb /><lb />before it all starts again in the fall.<lb /><lb />The only words of advice I can offer to my fellow Pirates is to enjoy<lb />every free moment of time because the likelihood of receiving the ideal<lb />amount of rest and relaxation may forever be a distant memory from<lb />childhood. One of the disadvantages of growing up is realizing that<lb />there is no such thing as summer vacation.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />WEDNESDAY MAY 16,2007 PAGE 5<lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb />I'd write for the paper but then I Td lose<lb />my ranting ability. :<lb />{ www.theeastcarolinian.com }<lb />oes an 2s ae SK Re Lae<lb /><lb />Ti He LATEST NAN LGATION<lb />SYSTEM... An extreme<lb />example of a greenhouse effect is<lb />the planet Venus. Millions of<lb />years ago Venus experienced<lb />an increase in the levels of<lb />greenhouse gases due to a thick<lb />atmosphere made up of carbon<lb />dioxide, which blanketed the planet<lb />and trapped heat.<lb /><lb />Natural factors that influence<lb />global warming include the shape<lb />of Earth Ts orbit around the sun, as<lb />well as sun spots.<lb /><lb />In the past, periods of<lb />warming and cooling depended on<lb />the shape of Earth Ts orbit. Accord-<lb />ing to Mallinson, these changes<lb />took place over tens of thou-<lb />sands to hundreds of thousands<lb />of years. The effects of global<lb />warming, while not as exagger-<lb />ated as those seen in the film<lb />The Day After Tomorrow, will<lb />nevertheless be detrimental to<lb />every citizen of the global com-<lb />munity.<lb /><lb />The most obvious change is the<lb />rise in sea level which is directly<lb />affected by the rise in global tem-<lb />peratures. :<lb /><lb /> oWe could see a 1.5 to 2 foot<lb /><lb />rise in sea level within the next<lb /><lb />100 years, which will ruin many<lb />coastal communities and lead to<lb />a loss in water resources due to<lb />increased salt water intrusion, ?<lb />Mallinson said.<lb /><lb />Sea level rise is due in large<lb />part to the melting of the polar ice<lb />sheets, especially that of Green-<lb />land. It is estimated that Green-<lb />land Ts ice sheets are melting at<lb />a rate of 51 cubic kilometers a<lb />year and, according to Dr. Curtis,<lb />if the ice sheets on Greenland<lb />completely melt there could be a 4<lb />foot rise in sea level globally. Sea<lb />level rise will displace millions of<lb />people leaving an enormous<lb />number of refugees.<lb /><lb />Globally, other effects would<lb />include warmer days and nights,<lb />extensive droughts and when it does<lb />rain, it will be extremely heavy and<lb />prolonged. Hurricanes, often a hot<lb />topic in the global warming debate,<lb />will be one of the changes<lb />that directly affects NC. Mon-<lb />etarily, the most obvious way<lb />to curb global warming is by<lb />investing in clean, renewable<lb />energy such as hydroelectricity<lb />and wind energy. or by purchasing<lb />a hybrid electric vehicle.<lb /><lb />While most college students<lb />aren't wealthy enough to be<lb /><lb />in the market for a brand new<lb />hybrid car, there are still sev-<lb />eral things that can be done<lb />that do not cost anything. It is<lb />always best to follow the three<lb />R Ts: recycle, reduce and reuse:<lb /><lb />According to Larry West,<lb />free lance environmental<lb />columnist, by just recycling<lb />half of your household waste<lb />you can save up to 2,400 pounds<lb />of carbon dioxide annually.<lb /><lb />Other wallet friendly<lb />ways to help with global warm-<lb />ing include driving less, using<lb />less heating and air, turn-<lb />ing off appliances while not in<lb />use, using less hot water, planting<lb />a tree, and encouraging others to<lb />conserve.<lb /><lb />In just a few short years,<lb />humanity will be feeling the major<lb />effects of global warming and<lb />our children and grandchildren<lb />will have to live through the<lb />worst of it. It is imperative that<lb />all members of humanity work<lb />to solve the problem immedi-<lb />ately, so that a clean and envi-<lb />ronmentally secure planet can be<lb />realized for future generations. ©<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />pulse@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Apartment &amp; Community Features<lb /><lb />- 2 &amp; 3 Private Bedroom Apartments with<lb />Private Baths, Walk-in Closets<lb /><lb />- ALL inclusive Apartments<lb /><lb />- Individual 10 &amp; 12 Month Leases<lb /><lb />- Game Room, Business/Computer<lb />Center, Fitness Center<lb /><lb />- Swimming Pool, Hot Tub &amp;<lb /><lb />Now Leasing<lb />FALL 2007<lb /><lb />Fill the Apartment<lb />Party by the Pool<lb /><lb />Come Party with us on<lb /><lb />Saturday May 19th<lb />from 1-5pm<lb />Free food &amp; Drinks<lb />Music<lb /><lb />Fabulous Give-A-Ways<lb /><lb />bi<lb /><lb />PM<lb />WRHT 96.3 - woz 103.7<lb /><lb />Live remote, will give<lb /><lb />www.CAMPUS-POINTE.com<lb /><lb />252-758-6766<lb /><lb />2230 NE Greenville Boulevard<lb />(Near corner of 10th &amp; Greenville Blvd.<lb />Just behind Walgreens.)<lb /><lb />Beach Volleyball, Picnic Area Mies nts ys<lb />- On ECU Bus Route $300 off 3 BR Apartments<lb /><lb />- Great Roommate Matching Program <lb />g g No Reservation Fee<lb /><lb />Professionally Managed by Brown Investment Properties campuspointeecu@bipinc.com<lb /><lb /></p>

          <lb />PAGE 8<lb /><lb />WEDNESDAY, MAY 16, 2007<lb /><lb />GRADUATION continued from 6<lb /><lb />semester as an intern with Commu-<lb />nity Heath Programs working with<lb />pediatric health education. Darden<lb />thought her internship was the last<lb />requirement to finish her degree, but<lb />with just a few weeks left in the semes-<lb />ter an obstacle was thrown in her way.<lb /><lb /> oAn email was sent to me and my<lb />advisor saying that I was missing one<lb />credit hour. I didn Tt even have time to<lb />ask questions about why they didn Tt<lb />catch it earlier, ? said Darden. To<lb />fulfill this requirement Darden was<lb />required to write a term, paper on<lb />disaster preparedness. Darden admits<lb />she was bothered about how the<lb />requirement seemed to slip through<lb />the cracks, even after she completed<lb /><lb />her senior summary with her advisor<lb />almost a year earlier. But she was<lb />calm about the whole ordeal.<lb /><lb /> oI got an A, ? she said, noting that<lb />the end results were all that mattered;<lb />especially so late in the semester.<lb /><lb />Classes are complete. Finals<lb />have been passed. Commemoration,<lb />congratulations and celebrations have<lb />passed. Finally an alumnus.<lb /><lb />For all those students who sur-<lb />vived the pressure and completed<lb />the required tasks, commencement<lb />celebrations on May 4 and 5 were<lb />bittersweet. Although the journey at<lb />ECU has come to an end, this ending<lb /><lb />is only a new beginning. So, what Ts<lb />next? oNext year I plan on taking the<lb />necessary classes to prepare for the<lb />MCAT (Medical College Admissions<lb />Test) for med school, ? said Darden.<lb /><lb />Others who have finished their<lb />educational pursuits are taking a<lb />moment to relax.<lb /><lb /> oT decided, to take a break between<lb />finishing my Master's degree and<lb />going out into the real world; because<lb />I know I won't get a break like this<lb />again until I retire, ? said Benn.<lb /><lb />Now that they are alumni, many<lb />recent grads feel like they have a little<lb />wisdom to give to those who are still<lb />on the journey.<lb /><lb /> oTalk to other people, and you'll<lb />find out you're not the only one going<lb />through certain issues. Get out and<lb />have fun, but stay focused and do<lb />your work, ? Darden said, who main-<lb />tains that keeping a healthy balance<lb />between your social and academic life<lb />is the way to go.<lb /><lb />Graduating from college is a<lb />great achievement that all students<lb />should be proud of. However, being<lb />prepared to take the next step after<lb />graduation is an important tool for all<lb />prospective graduates to remember.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />pulse@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />THEATRE continued<lb /><lb />General Manager for the theatre.<lb /><lb />Coon said he didn Tt realize that<lb />the theatre location was so far from<lb />other businesses, which are gener-<lb />ally located on the other end of<lb />Greenville Bivd., but he believes that<lb />the location will help to attract not<lb />only people who live in Greenville,<lb />but also the surrounding areas.<lb /><lb /> oTlike that the theatre is away from<lb />all the hustle and bustle of the other<lb />side of Greenville Blvd., ? said senior<lb />music major Arturo Cummings.<lb /> oPlus, I live really close to the theatre,<lb />so it Ts great. With the other one, I had<lb />to drive what seemed like forever. ?<lb /><lb />Coon wants students to come and<lb />enjoy the new theatre, which will offer<lb />a discount to all students with a valid<lb />student ID.<lb /><lb /> oI was shocked when I heard that<lb />the other theatre didn Tt offer a student<lb />discount. I think that [a student<lb />discount] is the basic element of the<lb />theatre business. As college students,<lb />you don Tt have a lot of disposable<lb />income to go and see a movie. This<lb />way, students can get away. from<lb />their studies, clubs, organizations,<lb />and other things that they have to<lb />do and see a movie at a discounted<lb />price, ? Coon said.<lb /><lb />Greenville Grande also gives a<lb />military discount, which Coon feels is<lb />important for this area of the country.<lb /><lb />Both the student and military<lb />discounted ticket prices are $7.00<lb /><lb />from 6<lb /><lb />per person, which is cheaper than the<lb />Carmike Cinemas, that charge $8.00<lb />per person.<lb /><lb />Greenville Grande includes four-<lb />teen auditoriums with stadium seat-<lb />ing, all with reclining seats and huge<lb />screens. Each auditorium varies in<lb />size, with the largest holding-about<lb />300 people, and the smallest holding<lb />about 100 people.<lb /><lb />Right now, the management at<lb />the theatre is working on a digital<lb />pre-show for all who attend the the-<lb />atre. This will include commercials,<lb />trivia, and music for moviegoers to<lb />enjoy before their movie.<lb /><lb />Although the theatre is only one<lb />month old, they have seen large turn-<lb />outs for movies like Spider Man 3.<lb /><lb />Coon and his staff hope that<lb />more people will begin coming to<lb />Greenville Grande, even if it is a bit<lb />ofa drive from the Firetower location<lb />of Carmike Cinemas.<lb /><lb /> oOnce people know we're open, I<lb />think we will have more of a crowd, ?<lb />Coon said.<lb /><lb />With the coming months,<lb />Greenville-Grande will be sharing a<lb />space with other businesses and res-<lb />taurants.
