NEWS EDITOR<lb /><lb />Facebook has become more<lb />than fun social network for one<lb />ECU student, who used the Web<lb />site as an enterprising tool to<lb />help launch a national grassroots<lb />campaign for presidential hope-<lb />ful, Sen. Originally from Golds-<lb />boro, N.C., he returned to his home<lb />state in order to spread a message<lb />of hope among students at ECU.<lb />Perry was diagnosed with HIV in<lb />2001, and feels it is necessary to<lb />help others see that life can change<lb /><lb />in an instant. A large portion of<lb />his discussion dealt with issues of<lb />acceptance and how he believes<lb />people must choose to take respon-<lb />sibility for their own actions.<lb />Perry has spoken of his<lb />experiences for years, and in April<lb />2004, landed a spot with who<lb />he calls, othe queen of media<lb />hérself, ? television icon Oprah<lb />Winfrey. By traveling around<lb />the country, he wishes to instill<lb />the message that this disease<lb />is not all that he is as a person.<lb /> oAs a health educator it was<lb />good to see someone come in and<lb />not just talk about the disease of<lb />AIDS. <lb />Opinion<lb /><lb />{Summertime cometh}<lb /><lb />THURSDAY APRIL 19, 2007<lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />| walk around with my iPod... and all of<lb />you are a part of my choreography.<lb /><lb />PAGE A4<lb /><lb />' [ve heard that a successful college career<lb />depends largely on the amount of work one puts into<lb />it, and is determined by what one takes away from<lb />it as a result "much like life.<lb /><lb />College, although partly about achieving success<lb />(both current and future), is more about an experi-<lb />ence, and our time here is an opportunity. We all<lb />work hard to make our way, but doing so wouldn't be<lb />possible without the environment we're in. ECU, in<lb />service and relative selflessness, » Zivegevery: student<lb />the chance to create their own unique experience to<lb />last a lifetime, more detailed and customizable than<lb />any graduate program or diploma.<lb /><lb />Everyone Ts experience is different, and uni-<lb />versity life presents a vast array of events, chal-<lb />lenges and chances. Some memorable aspects for<lb />me were simple, like watching students sprint<lb />to their 8 a.m. classes while strolling next door<lb />to art class in pajamas as the sun came up (I<lb />lived in Garrett freshman year), or sitting for<lb />hours in the tailgating fields as the sun set.<lb /><lb />Other memories stem from events orchestrated<lb />down to the last detail, like spending all day at<lb />Barefoot on the Mall or the Centennial Celebra-<lb />tion "events that bring together the entire com-<lb />munity and never fail to highlight how wonderfully<lb />diverse and spirited that community is.<lb /><lb />- University life offers the chance to be involved "<lb /><lb />with countless organizations, to explore our own<lb />interests while meeting new people who share the<lb />same enthusiasm but different perspectives. It offers<lb />the chance to learn skills outside of the classroom,<lb />through leadership and service, and ways to express<lb />ideas and opinions that might otherwise go unheard.<lb /><lb />Perhaps even more impressive than the uni-<lb />versity Ts ability to provide us with an environ-<lb />ment so conducive to individuality is its abil-<lb />ity to produce a common thread between all<lb />members of its community, past and present.<lb /><lb />Pirate pride runs deep, whether it Ts witnessed<lb />as a riotous display of fans during a football game<lb />or on a single license plate a thousand miles from<lb />home, there Ts no doubt it reminds us that we are<lb />part of something greater than a graduating class,<lb />something that spans generations.<lb /><lb />Years from now, if I see a gray haired alumni<lb />with an ECU sweatshirt or a freshman whose key<lb />chain sports an ECU bottle opener, I Tll smile, and<lb />perhaps we'll share memories about the time we<lb />spent here and the experiences we had, one Pirate<lb />to another.<lb /><lb />That Ts the beauty of this institution "the<lb />distinct experiences it allows Mery student<lb />to have are also timeless. We take away our<lb />degrees and diplomas, life lessons and long-<lb />time friends, but we are given so much more.<lb /><lb />Long after Mendenhall is renovated and utterly<lb />unrecognizable or Rumors morphs into yet another<lb />new club, the spirit and sense of community fostered.<lb />at ECU will remain for all who seek it.<lb /><lb />Each one of us has the opportunity to join that<lb />community as we create memories that define us and<lb />bind us together simply with the common phrase<lb /> oWhen I was in college... ?<lb /><lb />How you finish that phrase may still be uncer-<lb />tain, waiting for memories not yet made. All across the U.S.,<lb />children, teenagers and college students have been<lb />showing up at schools with the innate desire to<lb />kill. Although these cases have been studied over<lb />and over again, experts cannot seem to put any<lb />one of these killers into a simple profile. It Ts obvi-<lb />ous that these young murderers are disturbed,<lb />depressed and angered, but why do they have<lb />such an easy time killing such innocent victims?<lb /><lb />I am not in any way a psychologist or a specialist<lb />on murderers and troubled teens, but I do believe<lb />that the increase in violent video games, television<lb />shows, movies and the internet are to blame. Back in<lb />May of 1999, Harvard Ts Media Research Laboratory<lb />conducted a study on the-desensitization of Ameri-<lb />cans. The study found that less than three percent<lb />of Americans retain the ability to be upset, panicked<lb />or dismayed by inhuman cruelty, dismemberment<lb />or displays of sadistic nature. At the time of the<lb /><lb />study, Harvard researchers predicted that America<lb />would be completely desensitized by the year 2001.<lb /><lb />It should be no surprise then that today more<lb />than ever before, scenes of violence are becoming<lb />thrilling instead of horrifying. The production of<lb />video games such as oMortal Kombat, ? oGrand<lb />Theft Auto, ? oThrill Kill ? and oManhunt o are<lb />prime examples. The object of these games is<lb />to brutally kill the opponent, which ultimately<lb />translates into a full out blood bath on the tele-<lb />vision. screen. Movies and television programs<lb />prove to be no different when it comes to violence.<lb /><lb />According to the Against Violence Project,<lb />young adults spend close to 35 hours per week<lb />watching TV and playing video games. From<lb />what I Tve read, most psychologists agree that<lb />children who are exposed to acts of violence at a<lb />young age are more likely to choose violence as a<lb /><lb />: means to resolve conflict when they become adults.<lb /><lb />It is quite obvious that this has been an ongoing<lb />issue in America that doesn Tt seem to be changing<lb />any tine soon. As many of us prepare to graduate and<lb />eventually start families of our own, we should keep<lb />close to our hearts the recent tragedies we've had to<lb />watch unfold in our schools. It is up to us, as future<lb />parents, to become committed to raising children in an<lb />environment where violence isn'ta game or aresolution.<lb /><lb />4 a<lb /><lb /> Tragedy at<lb />Virginia Tech<lb /><lb />hits home<lb /><lb />A reflection on what could Tve<lb />been<lb /><lb />JUSTIN SUMMERS<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Over the weekend I had the pleasure of taking<lb />my last road trip of the year with the lacrosse team<lb />to Blacksburg, Virginia; home of the Hokies and<lb />Virginia Tech. It is a trip I will not soon forget<lb />given the situation that unfolded less than 24 hours<lb />after our departure.<lb /><lb />We arrived in Blacksburg with our usual road<lb />team, short on players and even shorter on moral.<lb />The game commenced and we were defeated 17-<lb />10, outscored and outran in the second half, We<lb />were all pretty down after the game but our senti-<lb />ments cannot be compared with the sorrows felt<lb />by the students and faculty now, after what has<lb />occurred.<lb /><lb />It is hard for me to believe somettieg so terrible<lb />could happen in a small mountain town like Blacks-<lb />burg. Driving through campus it was picturesque<lb />with mountains on all sides and clougs Piste up<lb />what little sun there was.<lb /><lb />' The buildings on campus are built with hokie<lb />stone ? and I recall how they looked like old castles.<lb />Standing on the lacrosse fields overlooking the<lb />stadium and the rest.of campus I remember think-<lb />ing how cool it would have been if my younger<lb />sister had accepted her invitation to attend T the<lb />university.<lb /><lb />Oh how things change. After watching the<lb />news and hearing the details about the grizzly<lb />scene that unfolded on campus, I am so grateful<lb />my sister declined the invitation. The mountains<lb />and castlé-like buildings that once seemed so safe<lb />now are just the opposite, forever tainted with the<lb />blood of the dead students and faculty that lost<lb />their lives Monday.<lb /><lb />It makes me think, what has happened to this<lb />country that things like this continue to. happen<lb />year after year? People lined up and murdered<lb />at schools in perceivably safe, small towns like<lb />Blacksburg.<lb /><lb />After the Columbine tragedy that transpired<lb />eight years ago this week we were offered many<lb />answers. We were told these were bad seeds<lb />neglected by society who turned to violence to<lb />all.those who. made.them<lb />ool. Marilyn Manson<lb /><lb />etn t video games were blamed. Some people :<lb /><lb />blamed gun-control laws.<lb /><lb />Personally I think if someone was not able to<lb /><lb />get their hands on semi-automatic pistols some of<lb />these deaths could be avoided. Others would say<lb />Just the opposite and suggest if gun-control laws<lb />were not so strict, one of the students or faculty<lb />may have had a gun and been able to take out the<lb />killer personally.<lb /><lb />Whatever causes these young men to lash out<lb />and kill their fellow students is beyond comprehen-<lb />sion. What is left to think about is what we can do<lb />in the future to avoid more of these tragedies.<lb /><lb />Each and every one of us is different and in<lb />college things can seem overwhelming. Boyfriends,<lb />girlfriends, family problems; whatever it may be,<lb />we all have stressors. The thing is, everyone must<lb />find a way to get past these things in a positive<lb />manner.<lb /><lb />Whether you have to go out running, confide<lb />in your friends or just drink a beer, you must get<lb />over things without harming others. If there is any<lb />lesson to be learned from this terrible tragedy in<lb />Blacksburg, it is that life is fragile and we should<lb />all do what we can to respect and treat each other<lb />right because you never know when something like<lb />this can happen.<lb /><lb />Sarah Bell<lb />Editor in Chief<lb /><lb />Elizabeth Lauten<lb />Asst. Last year, The Swash<lb />ate only 100 Blazin T wings and<lb />within a half hour. This year,<lb />we decided to spice things even<lb />more by adding another set of<lb />100 wings and teams. Some-<lb />times it Ts with the tour or some-<lb />times it Ts just a random one-off.<lb />We like playing college shows<lb />because they always take care of<lb />us, but it Ts not really that differ-<lb />ent. Hate... T was<lb />our first single and it did pretty<lb />well across the country and on<lb />the radio and everything, so it Ts<lb />time for the label to do a second<lb />single. They came out to see us<lb />and we played Delilah T and every<lb />single person was singing along.<lb />It was kind of an obvious choice;<lb />the song is connecting with people<lb />on a crazy level. The<lb />closest program to that number was<lb />men Ts basketball, which was pro-<lb />jected an allocation of $1.1 million.<lb /><lb />Baseball was expected to have<lb />$720,000 in expenses last year<lb />while expected to make $220,000<lb />from season ticket sales and<lb />$80,000 from the gates.<lb /><lb />What about women Ts sports?<lb />Women Ts basketball actually came<lb />in third, expected to receive more<lb />money than ECU baseball, with<lb />approximately $806,000 being<lb />spent on the program last year.<lb /><lb />Softball was projected to be given<lb />just over $420,000 and volleyball<lb />almost $344,000.<lb /><lb />It is also interesting to com-<lb />pare the projected expenses/<lb />profits of sports like swimming,<lb />tennis, track/cross country and<lb />golf which have both men Ts and<lb />women Ts teams. In the cases of<lb />these teams, the women Ts teams<lb />were expected to be given more<lb />money than the men Ts teams.<lb /><lb />Men Ts swimming was calcu-<lb />lated to receive about $233,000<lb />compared to the women Ts $374,000.<lb /><lb />PUDDIN continued from B5<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />Girlfriend Nicole Ciro poses with<lb />boyfriend and bouncer Lambert.<lb /><lb />idea to throw a benefit for Lambert<lb />to raise money for his surgery.<lb />Lambert's boss and best friend<lb />Scott Lupton, manager at Dr. Unk Ts<lb />Oasis and his girlfriend Nicole Ciro<lb />spearheaded a charity event for<lb />Lambert. His unusual nickname,<lb />Puddin T, became the center piece for<lb />the event, which took place this past<lb />Monday, April 16 at Dr. Unk Ts Oasis.<lb /> oWe needed to raise the money<lb />for his surgery. What ever we could<lb />do to help, ? said Scott Lupton, gen-<lb />eral manager for Dr. Unk Ts Oasis,<lb />about the reason for the event.<lb />Puddin T Palooza featured five<lb />bands that were recruited because<lb />of their friendship with Adam; Live<lb />With Biggie, Dragon Seeks Path,<lb />Assembly Required, Back Seat<lb /><lb />$10 Discount<lb />for Summer<lb /><lb />Photo by Zach Sirkin<lb /><lb />Romeo and An Issue Alive.<lb /><lb />The bands rocked out all night<lb />long and a special rendition of<lb />Marvin Gaye's hit oLet Ts get it on ?<lb />was played so that Adam and his<lb />girlfriend Nicole could enjoy adance<lb />together.<lb /><lb /> oThe only way I can accept this<lb />[money] is for them to accept my<lb />thanks, ? said Adam about the event. oIt Ts<lb />very humbling and I'm very fortunate. ?<lb /><lb />Money was raised by dona-<lb />tions, since there was no cover<lb />charge, and Dr. Unk Ts Oasis<lb />donated 10 percent of their night Ts<lb />earnings toward his surgery.<lb /><lb />Nicole Ciro said of the event,<lb /> oThanks for everyone that came out<lb />last night. It was wicked fun and we<lb />raised $1,780. ?<lb /><lb />Adam is a real inspiration. The<lb />next night he was back to work,<lb />sitting at his normal booth right in<lb />front of the Dr. Unk Ts entrance.
