The<lb />Upper and Lower Neuse River-<lb />keepers nominated the Neuse<lb />River for inclusion on the endan-<lb />gered list.<lb /><lb />About 2 million people live<lb />in the basin of the river, which<lb />rises in Durham County and<lb />flows southeasterly past Raleigh,<lb />Smithfield, Goldsboro and Kin-<lb />ston to the Pamlico Sound, the<lb />report said. ~<lb /><lb />Efforts to better protect the<lb />river began in 1997, after mil-<lb />lions of fish died and were seen<lb />floating in the water. Developers<lb />are now required to build at least<lb />50 feet from the river and its<lb /><lb />tributaries, farms must use better.<lb /><lb />applications of fertilizer, and<lb />sewer plants must reduce certain<lb />discharges, the report said.<lb /><lb />But pollution is threatening<lb /><lb />to undo those efforts, according<lb />to the report.<lb /><lb />Some signs of pollution are<lb />evident at Falls Lake, a reservoir<lb />near the river Ts upper end that<lb />supplies drinking water to more<lb />than 400,000 people in Wake<lb />County. Treated sewage loaded<lb />with nitrogen and phosphorous<lb />flows into the lake. Nitrogen<lb />spurs growth of aquatic plants,<lb />which can rob the water of<lb />oxygen when they decompose<lb />and cause fish kills.<lb /><lb />Report researchers, along<lb />with state water quality officials,<lb />believe Falls Lake will be placed =<lb />on. the federal list of polluted<lb />water bodies next year.  <lb /><lb />Progress has been made, but °<lb />more needs to be done as another<lb />1 million people are expected to<lb />be living in the river basin by &amp;<lb />2020, said Dean Naujoks, the<lb />Upper Neuse Riverkeeper.<lb /><lb /> oCertainly, the development<lb />pressure is more the long term<lb />issue,  Naujoks said.  oEvery-<lb />where development is occurring,<lb />we're having degraded water<lb />quality.<lb /><lb />vinta<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />Tyrre<lb /><lb />to by Le<lb /><lb />Vendors show off traditional craftsmanship during the 15th Annua<lb /><lb />been shaky in the last few years.<lb /><lb /> oWe all try not to schedule our<lb />events in competition with each<lb />other,  Gilland said.  oAs more pow-<lb />wows spring up and the cost ofliving<lb />goes up, vendors, singers and danc-<lb /><lb />POWWOW cong ues from Al ,<lb /><lb />ers have to choose which powwow<lb />they want to go to because you can<lb />find one just about every weekend. <lb /><lb />A lunch break was held around<lb />3 p.m. Afterwards, several students<lb /><lb />ative American Powwow on Saturday.<lb /><lb />Christie Hagen, junior biology<lb />major, received the Cabrina Cum-<lb />mings Scholarship.<lb /><lb />This writer can:be contacted at<lb /><lb />were honored with rewards and news@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />COME<lb /><lb />GET REBEL AT BAREFOOT ON THE MALL<lb /><lb />Mon. - Sat. 5pm Until<lb />www.wimpiescajun.com<lb /><lb />Wimpies Ts<lb /><lb />STEAM BAR &amp; CAJUN CAFE<lb /><lb />Laissez le bon temps rouler!<lb /><lb />Live Music<lb /><lb />Friday &amp; Saturday<lb />Downtown Winterville<lb />Historic Ange Building<lb /><lb />Main St. &amp; Mills<lb />355-4220<lb /><lb />Tuesday<lb />Crab Cakes or Stuffed<lb />Flounder $ 13.99<lb /><lb />New Nightly Specials<lb /><lb />Monday<lb />Crab Leg $10.99 lb.<lb /><lb />sonenenmmceutis<lb />ee<lb /><lb />sano et<lb /><lb />Wimpie Wednesdays<lb /><lb />Live Music at 7pm<lb />Appetizers - Buy One, Get One<lb />Shrimp $ 11.99 Ib « Peck $ 16<lb /><lb />Beer Specials :<lb /><lb />Thursday<lb /><lb />Catering and banquet facilities<lb /><lb />available<lb /><lb />FREE 1/2 lb shrimp with<lb />every peck of oysters<lb /><lb />ai cick aiel abate eliekelausnnlaatit al<lb /><lb />Cua)<lb /><lb />BUFFALO WILD WINGS<lb />=H GRILLE BAR B=<lb /><lb />Texas Hold Tem Tournament<lb />Every Wednesday &amp; Thursday 10pm<lb /><lb />Win $50 Gift Certificates<lb /><lb />Uptown Greenville 114 E. 5th St.<lb />758-9191 Call for carry out/delivery<lb /><lb />Open 11am-2am Daily<lb />Delivery 756-5527<lb /><lb />PPPPLARP PH<lb /><lb />a<lb /><lb /> o<lb />4<lb />4<lb />G<lb />4<lb />&amp;<lb />$<lb />4<lb />*<lb />Bs<lb />,<lb />$<lb />we<lb /><lb />baa<lb /><lb />}<lb /><lb />AAA<lb /><lb />SECURITY SELF STORAGE<lb /><lb />Students<lb />5x10: $30<lb />10x10: $45<lb /><lb />Limited space<lb /><lb />10th St.<lb /><lb />East on 10th St.<lb />3.5 Miles past<lb />Greenville Bivd. on left<lb /><lb /> oPAG Mf a11!Auaa19<lb /><lb />Directly across from Fox Ts Pizza<lb />10th St./ Highway 33 Greenville<lb /><lb />$10 Discount<lb />for Summer<lb />Storage<lb /><lb />¢ Valid w/ Student ID<lb /><lb />EASTGATE MINI STORAGE @ CAROLINA MINI STORAGE<lb /><lb />3275 Landmark St.<lb />3201 Moseley Dr. (Off E. 10th Street (Behind City Bistro)<lb /><lb />192-6900 | 355-3000<lb /><lb />St. James United Methodist Church T<lb /><lb />Proudly Presents<lb /><lb />The Fifteenth Annual Fundraising<lb /><lb />a a<lb />d sale!<lb />eet Spring Fling =.=<lb />hive auction T _ Saturday, April 28th, 2007 oe<lb />Poop! 2000 East sixth Street Greenville<lb /><lb />(Behind Wilkerson Ts Funeral Home)<lb /><lb />Rain or Shine<lb />The fun begins with breakfast at 5:30am (biscuits to love)<lb />Yard Sale: 6:30am  " 12pm (largest in Greenville)<lb />Bake Sale and a Bazaar: 8am<lb />Bar-B-Que Chicken Lunch at 11am - 1pm (call 752-6154 for tickets)<lb />Live Auction: 5pm - until<lb /><lb />A fun filled day benefiting:<lb /><lb />The Boy's and Girl's Club of Pitt County<lb />Easter Seals UCP Summer Moore Children's Center<lb />Care Net Pastoral Counseling Center<lb />Emerge Gallery and Art Center<lb /><lb />Come join our church family for a fun filled day of bagain hunting for<lb />clothes, furniture, toys, electronics, one-of-a-kind items and so much more!<lb />Don Tt forget to come hungry too!           <lb />America<lb />plants Seeds<lb />of Democracy<lb /><lb />Steal from the poor to give to the rich<lb /><lb />CARMIN BLACK<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />Can anyone give me a clear, concise reason for<lb />why we are currently involved in the Iraqi war?<lb />Now don Tt get me wrong, I understand why America<lb />first involved itself, and there Ts no doubt there could<lb /><lb />- have been even more costly ramifications than those<lb /><lb />we currently face had we not taken a stance against<lb />Osama bin Laden and Al-Qaeda. I have made a<lb />point to educate myself about Saddam Hussein and<lb />his crimes against humanity while in power, and I<lb />will even admit that democracy in the Middle East<lb />if properly implemented, will serve as the fair voice<lb />of the majority.<lb /><lb />The real issue for me is not understanding<lb />whether or not the U.S. is currently needed in Iraq.<lb />In fact, I agree that it would be a terrible thing to<lb />pull out today. I have gained a grasp that the people<lb />of Baghdad currently want U.S. troops out of their<lb />city, however, if we were to leave today we'd be<lb />leaving behind total chaos, a bloodbath and a worse<lb />controversy in this area than when we first stepped<lb /><lb />- into the picture.<lb /><lb />The real issue for me is finding a way to sift<lb />through all of the conflicting reasons the media tells<lb />us about why we are still involved in this war.<lb /><lb />One day you hear it Ts that the U.S. has uncovered<lb />weapons of mass destruction and the next day it Ts<lb />printed that Bush Administration has actually found<lb />nothing. Then you'll turn on the TV to hear some<lb />specialists telling listeners that the U.S. government<lb />is actually only concerned with controlling Middle<lb />Eastern oil and that their main propose for this war<lb />is to make sure that they preserve the U.S. dollar as<lb />the world Ts reserve currency.<lb /><lb />Regardless of the reasons, one incident I learned<lb />about, called Monsanto Seeds, sparked my doubts of<lb />what our country Ts truest intentions are for being a<lb />part of this war unlike any other piece of information<lb />I'd learned about before.<lb /><lb />According to many sources, Monsanto Seeds is<lb />a multi-billion dollar agriculture company who is<lb />trying to take over the planet, well, ifnot the planet,<lb />at least all the crops growing on it.<lb /><lb />This company, based out of Missouri, has found<lb />their niche in hiring expensive, genius scientists to<lb />develop genetically modified plant seeds, specifically<lb />seeds used to mass produce crops.<lb /><lb />The scientists at Monsanto Seeds have found<lb />ways to create crops that grow with a substance<lb />that is deadly to insects and completely harmless<lb />to humans. They have also found ways to create<lb />seeds that can only sprout for one growing season;<lb />many call them suicide seeds because the new seeds<lb />that fall from those existing crops are completely<lb />infertile, holding no ability to produce crops the<lb />following harvest. This in turn forces farmers to<lb />have to buy a whole new batch of seeds each year, a<lb />practice which only the wealthiest farmers been able<lb />to afford to do.<lb /><lb />What does this have to do with the Iraqi war?<lb />Well, currently in Iraq small farmers operate in an<lb />essentially unregulated, informal seed supply system.<lb />Farmers grow their crops, and then they gather all of<lb />the fallen seeds to replant the next growing season.<lb />According to one article,  oIraq's New Patent Law: A<lb />Declaration of War Against Farmers,   ofarm-saved<lb />seed and the free innovation with and exchange of<lb />planting is now a thing of the past. <lb /><lb />Recently the Coalition Provisional Authority<lb />under the now former Paul Bremer, has made it illegal<lb />for Iraqi farmers to re-use seeds harvested from new<lb />varieties registered under the law.<lb /><lb />That Ts right, under U.S. Government regulations,<lb />Iraqi farmers are going to have to obtain a yearly<lb />license and pay up if they want to use genetically-<lb />modified seeds from American Corporations.<lb /><lb />Also according to the same article,  oPlant Variety<lb />Protection (PVP) that provides for the protection of<lb />new varieties of plants, is an intellectual property<lb />right (IPR) or a kind of patent for plant varieties<lb />which gives an exclusive monopoly right on plant-<lb />ing material to a plant breeder who claims to have<lb />discovered or developed a new variety. <lb /><lb />Basically the protection in PVP has nothing to<lb />do with protecting the Iraqi farmers, rather, it works<lb />to safeguard of the commercial interests of large<lb />corporations, in this case Monsanto Seeds.<lb /><lb />Basically what this boils down to is that our<lb />Government leaders, again are being accused of<lb />neglecting the interest of starving, underprivileged<lb />people to further protect their own self interest, as<lb />well as keep in good standings with large companies<lb />who have the power to make them wealthy.<lb /><lb />It seems that certain government leaders are get-<lb />ting away with allowing Monsanto to steal Iraqi'seed<lb />recipes, bring them to the states and patent them, and<lb />then turn around and force the Iraqi farmers buy,<lb />each harvesting season, a new batch of seeds that<lb />have actually always been rightfully theirs.<lb /><lb />It just seems to me that many Iraqi people<lb />are going to be forced to live under the<lb /> oAmerican credo: Pay Monsanto, or starve! <lb /><lb />er =<lb /><lb />Rm WHAT WouLD You Like FOR "<lb />YouR BIRTHDay, DEAR? +<lb /><lb />"I DON'T KNOW, PHIL.<lb /><lb />How  BouT A<lb />Divorce?<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />hreferso a<lb /><lb />CIO?  oTe bane Media Ftrerces<lb />COMI CS Page. These criticisms<lb />run the gambit from their own personal business to<lb />the United States as a whole. Such as the drinking age<lb />to Bush Ts demand for additional surveillance power.<lb /><lb />Now while I enjoy complaining about congress<lb />as much as the next guy, keep one thing in mind. The<lb />United States has a long way to go to reach other<lb />countries in the world. While anyone can go off about<lb />what they believe is wrong with America, look at the<lb />truth. At least you have the:freedom to complain.<lb /><lb />When looking for the facts, three agencies<lb />come to mind from different backgrounds who work<lb />towards documenting and researching countries<lb />freedoms. There is the United States T government<lb />perspective through the Freedom House, ranking<lb />political and civil rights.<lb /><lb /> T There are the economist Ts views of freedom<lb />through the Wall Street Journal, covering such<lb />topics as labor and trade freedoms. Lastly, there is<lb />the Reporters Without Borders, ranking country Ts<lb /><lb />. situations through actually visiting the countries<lb /><lb />they talk about.<lb /><lb />While some may not agree with these tables<lb />independently, they paint a comprehensive picture<lb />when combined.<lb /><lb />The Freedom House Ts data parallels a lot of<lb />what you might expect in the American government<lb />(apparently most of the Middle East is not free); how-<lb />ever a great deal of their list is on the mark.<lb /><lb />Many regions we have heard of in conflict in<lb />Africa are listed as not free and accurately so. When a<lb />citizen of their country cannot leave their house with-<lb />out the looming fear of death, they are not free.<lb /><lb />The Wall Street Journal agrees in some aspects<lb />with the Freedom House (Cuba, North Korea, Zim-<lb />babwe), but differ in others. Whereas the Freedom<lb />House has pegged the United Arab Emirates and<lb />Saudi Arabia as not free, the Wall Street Journal<lb />shows a complete u-turn, listing the two as mostly<lb />free.<lb /><lb />This holds as well for the Reporters Without<lb />Borders in most respects, as countries in conflict are<lb />understandably labeled as a difficult situation.<lb /><lb />While none of the organizations see eye to eye<lb />completely, the lists agree on one fact. The number<lb />of countries that share the United States T level<lb />of freedom can almost be counted on two hands.<lb /><lb />While you may want to criticize recent<lb />developments in Washington, be glad for<lb />the fact you the right to speak your mind.<lb /><lb />The reality of the 192 countries cross-ref-<lb />erenced in all three lists, is that the American<lb />people are exceptionally fortunate. Do not be so<lb />quick to whine about your freedoms in America<lb />when half the world would give anything for<lb />even the slightest percent of what you possess.<lb /><lb />Br her cen<lb /><lb />4-10"<lb /><lb />comic S page. The<lb />Nebraska based Bright Eyes T latest<lb />release, Cassadaga, just came out<lb />on Tuesday, April 10, and is perfect<lb />if you are looking for something<lb /><lb />more mellow and folksy. Guster Ts<lb />new EP, Satellite, also provides a<lb />more laid-back yet catchy listen.<lb /><lb />From Autumn to Ashes T new<lb />one, Holding A Wolf By The Ears,<lb />contrasts as much to the former<lb />two bands as the title suggests.<lb />The hardcore/emo band Ts latest<lb />album was also released on Tues-<lb />day, April 10, and has the familiar<lb />screaming vocals and in-your-face<lb />guitar riffs with the helpful com-<lb />bination of melodic verses for the<lb />sake of balance.<lb /><lb />Tuesday, April 17, served as<lb />the release date for an interesting<lb />mix of artists. Blonde, bouncy,<lb />and with an infectious (sometimes<lb />obnoxious) single already under<lb />her belt, Avril Lavigne s The Best<lb />Damn Thing is her third album<lb />and seemingly third attempt to<lb />redefine her musical identity. With<lb /><lb />such thought-provoking lyrics as<lb /> oShe Ts like so whatever,  this one<lb />is guaranteed to be a contrast<lb />to her  oComplicated  days with<lb />a cross over into the world of<lb />bubbly pop.<lb /><lb />Back in the world of rock, Nine<lb />Inch Nails T Year Zero also released<lb />yesterday. While  omellow  isn Tt<lb />really the word, this album defi-<lb />nitely exhibits the band Ts growth<lb />over the years in that it is not as<lb />fierce as their earlier days. The<lb />mix of their unique lyrics and<lb />vocals with electronica-like beats<lb />and tracks makes for an interest-<lb />ing listen.<lb /><lb />R&amp;B/rap veterans Bone<lb />Thugs-n-Harmony are back on<lb />the scene with their new album<lb />Strength and Loyalty.           <lb />PAGE A6<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN ¢ PULSE<lb /><lb />Cozy eatery combines tasty<lb />food and warm atmosphere<lb /><lb />Atavola provides<lb />flavorful options to<lb />satisfy hunger<lb /><lb />BEN HARRIS<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />Nestled snugly beside Food<lb />Lion in the shopping center adja-<lb />cent to the AMF bowling center<lb />is a tiny restaurant that succeeds<lb />by serving big dishes that con-<lb />tain even bigger taste. Atavola<lb />is a market style restaurant that<lb />serves the traditional soups and<lb />sandwiches but with a primary<lb />emphasis on Italian dishes.<lb /><lb />The restaurant itself is fairly<lb />small, encompassing an area of<lb />what could be described as half<lb />the size of an Olympic swimming<lb />pool. I was likewise taken aback<lb />as J expected something the size<lb />of the usual Ruby Tuesdays based<lb />on what I had previously heard<lb />about the restaurant.<lb /><lb />Upon entering the eatery, I<lb />immediately noticed the wood-<lb />work that made up the room. The<lb />attention to the fine detail by the<lb />creator was something one might<lb />expect from the most skilled of<lb />Italian carpenters.<lb /><lb />Our table was near the large<lb />42  plasma television that domi-<lb />nates one of the walls. My inter-<lb />est in the restaurant had now<lb />been raised. Were they trying to<lb />hide something with this overt<lb /><lb />display of ehtertainmicnt?<lb /><lb />The robotically cheerful<lb />server came over and provided<lb />me with the oversized. menus. I<lb />gave my order for the custom-<lb />ary Coke and proceeded to gaze<lb />over the fifty or so dishes, each<lb />begging to be divinely chosen.<lb />Figuring that Atavola concen-<lb />trates on Italian dishes for a<lb />good reason, I choose the cheese<lb />stuffed tortellini with a pesto and<lb />tomato sauce.<lb /><lb />Having just been paid I<lb />decided to become even more<lb />adventurous and order a chicken<lb />and corn chowder soup appe-<lb />tizer.<lb /><lb />The subsequent wait between<lb />ordering and receiving gave me<lb />ample time to further. observe<lb />the restaurant. The first thing<lb />that grappled the attention of my<lb />starved mind was the placement<lb />of more than a dozen paintings<lb />on the restaurants right wall.<lb /><lb />My appetizer shortly arrived<lb />and surprised me with a presen-<lb />tation of unheard of taste. Corn<lb />chowder, like a house of cards,<lb />can be easily ruined by just the<lb />slightest ignorance of detail<lb />and concentration. Thankfully,<lb />Atavola Ts cook managed to pro-<lb />vide chowder that had just the<lb /><lb /> right amount of the all-impor-<lb /><lb />tant balance of chicken, corn<lb />and spices.<lb /><lb />Before I could even finish my<lb />chowder, my main course came<lb /><lb />out. My taste buds, furious for<lb />my recent inability to finish the<lb />chowder, relished in the dish Ts<lb />unparalleled presentation of<lb />explosive, cheesy taste.<lb /><lb />Never a fan of pesto, I was<lb />taken aback by how well it blended<lb />with the cheese, extraordinary<lb />sauce and noodles. Needless to<lb />say, the dish quickly vanished in<lb />a frenzy of forks and Coke. »<lb /><lb />The dining experience was<lb />extremely pleasant due to the<lb />intimate atmosphere of the res-<lb />taurant, which allowed for per-<lb />sonal attention by the servers<lb />but prevented an escalation of<lb />noise.<lb /><lb />The server quickly and effi-<lb />ciently took up old plates while<lb />refilling my beverage. An empty<lb />cup. and a parched mouth are<lb />often the bain of many diners T<lb />culinary lives. Atavola Ts meals<lb />are also reasonably priced for the<lb />amount of food. It is also a great<lb />place to spend a pleasurable night<lb />out dining without all of the<lb />hustle of larger restaurants.<lb /><lb />Great atmosphere, food, ser-<lb />vice and prices all provide for a<lb />great experience. The restaurant<lb />is definitely worth many revisits<lb />and will undoubtedly become a<lb />favored dining establishment in<lb />Greenville in the coming years.<lb /><lb />Overall Grade: A  "<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />pulse@theeastcarolinian.com..<lb /><lb />read.rant.share.<lb /><lb />apply.<lb /><lb />re] 0) @) [ers] te) atsmer=| am o( me(@) Via] (er=(e (sve pralk<lb />AlUlOM PAYA AN Alalsvsretsicerslne) altclamece)aal<lb /><lb />| 1-877-499-TEXT to<lb />RESERVATIONS!<lb /><lb />A Textbook Reservation Form is<lb />due August 1. SPORTS EDITOR<lb /><lb />Last Wednesday, the ECU<lb />baseball team was losing 2-1 to<lb />UNC Wilmington and in danger<lb />of losing its fifth straight game,<lb />but late-game heroics led the<lb />Pirates to a 3-2 victory.<lb /><lb />With two outs and the game<lb />tied at two in the top of ninth,<lb />it looked as if ECU Ts hope for a<lb />win would have to come in extra<lb />innings. But Brandon Henderson<lb />stole second base, moving into<lb />scoring position with Sophomore<lb />Ryan Wood at the plate. Wood then<lb />took an Allen Flood slider into<lb />centerfield for a RBI single that<lb />ended the Pirates T losing streak.<lb /><lb /> oIt was big that. we won that<lb />game,  Wood said after practice<lb />yesterday.  oWe needed that game. <lb /><lb />Wood Ts game-winning hit was<lb />something that the Pirates had<lb />lacked the week before, as they<lb />couldn Tt get much offense going<lb />against N.C. State or Rice in a<lb />winless week that knocked them<lb /><lb />out of the Top 25 rankings for the<lb />first time since early March.<lb /><lb /> oThere Ts times when everyone<lb />is swinging the bat well and then<lb />other days where, as a group, we Tre<lb />not swinging the bat as well,  said<lb />the Pirates T Hitting Coach Link<lb />Jarrett.  oYou have to make the<lb />most of the opportunity when you<lb />get a runner in scoring position<lb />and have a chance to drive in that<lb />key run. <lb /><lb />Jarrett said that weather<lb />was a factor in the 115th meet-<lb />ing between the two clubs. The<lb />Pirates and Seahawks combined<lb />for five runs on 11 hits, as heavy<lb />winds limited offensive opportuni-<lb />ties for both teams.<lb /><lb /> oThat was a huge hit for our<lb />program at a time when we needed<lb />a big win,  Jarrett said of Wood Ts<lb />RBI single.  oThat was a tough<lb /><lb />night, the wind was blowing in ,<lb /><lb />really hard and neither team could<lb />get much going. Anytime we can<lb />get a key hit like that is important,<lb />even when we're not swinging the<lb />bat extremely well and not putting<lb />10 runs up on the scoreboard. <lb />Wood continued his clutch<lb />hitting in the Pirates T next game<lb />in Huntington, W. Va. against C-<lb />USA foe Marshall. Wood tied the<lb /><lb />game at four in the seventh inning<lb />with a sacrifice fly that scored<lb />Dale Mollenhauer.<lb /><lb />The Pirates went on to win<lb />the game, 7-4, this time getting a<lb />game-winning hit from freshman<lb />first baseman Kyle Roller.<lb /><lb />Since the Pirates were on the<lb />road and didn Tt have their bullpen<lb />catchers with them, Roller was<lb />actually in the bullpen warming<lb />up an ECU pitcher when Pirates<lb />Head Coach Billy Godwin and<lb />Jarrett decided to pinch-hit the<lb />freshman with the game tied at<lb />four in the eighth inning.<lb /><lb />Roller responded with a game-<lb />winning solo home run.<lb /><lb /> oHe was actually catching in<lb />the bullpen, ran down here to hit<lb />and just had a great at-bat,  said<lb />Jarrett.  oHe got a pitch that he<lb />could really hammer, and that Ts<lb />what we expect out of him in the<lb />future and we got a glimpse of<lb />what he Ts capable of doing. <lb /><lb />Roller recorded his first career<lb />home run right after his first stint<lb />as a bullpen catcher. .<lb /><lb /> oHe Ts never caught in the bull-<lb />pen like that before, so he Ts down<lb />there in the catcher Ts gear and then<lb /><lb />see Joab sla page AlO<lb /><lb />_ MOST VALUABLE PIRATE<lb /><lb />WEEKLY BASEBALL AWARD<lb /><lb />Wood hit a team-best .444<lb />last week in the Pirates T three<lb />wins. His best accomplishment<lb />came last Wednesday against<lb />in-state rival UNC Wilming-<lb />ton. The 6-foot-4 second base-<lb />man recorded the game win-<lb />ning hit against the Seahawks<lb />in the top of the ninth, when he<lb />took an offering from UNCW<lb />pitcher Allen Flood into cen-<lb />terfield, scoring fellow sopho-<lb />more Brandon Henderson and<lb />giving the Pirates a 3-2 win<lb />that snapped their four-game<lb />losing streak. Wood provided<lb />the Pirates with clutch hitting<lb />again this past weekend as<lb />he tied Friday Ts game against<lb />Marshall at four with a sacrifice<lb />fly in the seventh inning. Wood<lb />is now batting .301 and has 10<lb />multi-hit games on the season. ©<lb /><lb />Key hits lead Pirates to perfect week<lb /><lb />MOST VALUABLE PIRATE<lb /><lb />MIDSEASON BASEBALL AWARD<lb /><lb />Mollenhauer is quietly<lb />leading the ECU baseball<lb />team in many statistical cat-<lb />egories with the season a little<lb />more than halfway over. Mol-<lb />lenhauer has the most hits on<lb />the team with 50 and the best<lb />batting average (.352). He also<lb />leads the Pirates in total bases,<lb />at-bats and on-base percentage.<lb />The Pirates T shortstop is one<lb />of only three players who have<lb />started all 36 games so far this<lb />season. The junior from Gib-<lb />sonia, Pa. has now started the<lb />last 92 ECU baseball games at<lb />shortstop, as he started in all<lb />56 games last season. The<lb />special teams unit on any football<lb />team usually receives little media<lb />attention or fanfare unless it fea-<lb />tures a flashy. kick returner, a la<lb />Dante Hall or Devin Hester.<lb /><lb />The ECU football team fea-<lb />tures one such kick returner in<lb />versatile running back Chris<lb />Johnson. Johnson, a 5 feet 11<lb />inch, 200 pound, senior from<lb />Orlando, FI. is the only key com-<lb />ponent of the Pirates special<lb />teams unit returning next season.<lb />Johnson brings a lot to the table<lb />as a kick returner and made<lb />the 2006 C-USA Football All-<lb />Conference First Team as the<lb />leagues premier return specialist.<lb /><lb />Out of the team Ts 36 kick<lb />return opportunities in 2006,<lb /><lb />Johnson returned 21 for a total of |<lb /><lb />482 yards, an impressive average<lb />of 23 yards-per-return. Johnson Ts<lb />season high return went for 96<lb /><lb />yards and a touchdown.<lb /><lb />Joining Johnson on the 2006<lb />C-USA Football All-Conference<lb />First Team was punter Ryan<lb />Dougherty. Dougherty had a<lb />stellar collegiate career at ECU,<lb />topping it off with a notable senior<lb />season.<lb /><lb />Dougherty made 51 punts<lb />for 2226 yards, an average of<lb />43.6 yards-per-punt on the 2006<lb />season. Dougherty dropped 15<lb />kicks inside the 20-yard line, by<lb />far the most important statistic<lb />for any punter. Close, low scoring<lb />games often come down to a battle<lb />of field position, and this is where<lb />Dougherty excelled.<lb /><lb />Matt Dodge, a transfer punter<lb />and place kicker, enjoys following<lb />in the footsteps of the ECU great.<lb /><lb /> oHe Ts a great kicker so it Ts awe-<lb /><lb />some coming out behind one of<lb /><lb />the best kickers in East Carolina<lb />history,  said Dodge.  oBut I'd like<lb />to make a name for myself too. <lb />Dodge, .a 6 feet 2 inch, 203<lb />pound, sophomore transfer from<lb />Appalachian State will have the<lb />opportunity to vie for the starting<lb />spot as the Pirates punter going<lb />into next season. Dodge, who will<lb />be competing mainly with Nathan<lb />Przestrzelski, a 6 feet 5 inch, 175<lb />pound redshirt freshman. Dodge<lb />believes that his experience with<lb />App. St. will be a great asset for<lb />him in the 2007 season.<lb /> oStarting on a Division I-AA<lb /><lb />National Championship team<lb />is going to give anybody some<lb />great experience,  said Dodge.<lb /> oI have that game time experi-<lb />ence and I know I can perform<lb />when the games on the line<lb />and it just gives you that confi-<lb />dence to know that you've already<lb />been out there for a year as<lb />opposed to someone coming out<lb />of high school that hasn Tt been<lb />kicking on the college level. <lb /><lb />Dodge and Przestrzelski were<lb />exceptional in the Purple-Gold<lb />game on opposing teams. Dodge<lb />made five punts for 192 yards for<lb />the  oEast Carolina  squad, an aver-<lb />age of 38.4 yards-per-punt. Dodge's<lb />longest punt went for 55 yards, and<lb />he nailed two inside the 20-yard<lb />line. Przestrzelski faired slightly<lb />better playing for the  oPirates, <lb />making six<lb /><lb />moving on, Hartman became the<lb />most mature kicker on the team<lb />in spring practice. Hartman got<lb />a lot more work done this spring<lb />as compared to last year.<lb /><lb /> oTt was a lot more kicking for<lb />one. It was different not having<lb />{punter Ryan] Dougherty or<lb />[placekicker Robert] Lee out<lb />here, but we just have a bunch of<lb />guys working hard and a lot of<lb />spots open so good competition<lb />has been going on,  said Hartman.<lb /><lb />During last season Hartman<lb />had time to touch up on his in-<lb />game experience, going 3-for-5<lb />on field goal attempts for the<lb />season (60 percent) with a long<lb />of 47 yards.<lb /><lb />Hartman again had a chance<lb />to show his outstanding range in<lb />the Purple- Gold game. The eas ee cial teams unit<lb /><lb />5 feet 11 inch,<lb />195 pound,<lb />sophomore from Winston-Salem,<lb />N.C. first made an impression as<lb />a freshman last season. Hartman<lb />Joined the ECU football team as a<lb />walk-on in Fall 2005 and started<lb />gunning for the starting job as<lb />place kicker in spring practice.<lb />Former Pirate Robert  oThe Gen-<lb />eral  Lee would eventually keep<lb />his job as the primary field goal<lb />kicker, but Hartman shared duties<lb />throughout the season.<lb /><lb />More important to Hartman<lb />than taking the starting job was<lb />the advice he received from sea-<lb />soned veteran Lee.<lb /><lb /> oHe was a good mentor. We<lb />would sometimes simulate game<lb />situations and he just showed me<lb />little inside things, like fine tuning<lb />your mechanics and becoming a<lb />better college kicker,  Lee said.<lb /><lb />Hartman went on to compare<lb />Lee to another savvy veteran on<lb />last year Ts squad.<lb /><lb /> oIt Ts just like with any quar-<lb />terback, like playing behind James<lb />[Pinkney],  said Lee.  oYou're<lb />playing behind one of the best<lb />kickers in the nation the past two<lb />years and it Ts just a real blessing<lb />for you. <lb /><lb />With the experienced kickers<lb /><lb />comes from the<lb />departure of<lb />former Special Teams Coordina-<lb />tor Don Yanowsky. Yanowsky<lb />took an offer to coach the same<lb />position at Boston College, leav-<lb />ing the Pirates with a huge void<lb />to fill.<lb /><lb />For now, ECU Head Coach<lb />Skip Holtz has elected to coach the<lb />unit by committee. Holtz, as well<lb />as his assistants, will take time<lb />to mentor the young kickers. As<lb />a former flanker on special teams<lb />for the Notre Dame Fighting<lb />Irish, Holtz is sure to have some<lb />noteworthy advice for everyone<lb />on the squad.<lb /><lb />But with the game hanging in<lb />the balance, and the Pirates down<lb />by a point with the game clock<lb />reading 0:01 you can be sure that<lb />no one will be giving off-hand<lb />advice to Hartman. Hartman has<lb />his own way of coping with the<lb /><lb />- pressure of the game weighing on<lb /><lb />his shoulders. :<lb /> oI just try to stay calm and<lb />relaxed and do what I know how<lb />to do,  said Hartman.<lb /> oKeep my head down and<lb />watch the ball. <lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />year witha 19-9 record<lb />_afternoon the Pirates d<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />inning all of their<lb />ou oT<lb /><lb />fell to<lb /><lb /> improved to 16-6<lb />won all three doubles<lb />(ODU also controlle<lb /><lb />Gol wi who came ba<lb />issa antos 2-6,<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /></p>
