NEWS EDITOR<lb /><lb />Yesterday morning, an<lb />unidentified man opened fire at<lb />Virginia Tech in the deadliest<lb />shooting rampage on American<lb />soil. Two attacks, two hours and<lb />a half-mile apart, occurred before<lb />the university assessed the situa-<lb />tion fully and warned students.<lb /><lb />The bloodbath ended when<lb />the gunman committed suicide,<lb />leaving at least 33 dead and<lb />countless others injured.<lb /><lb />In lieu of yesterday Ts tragic<lb />events, ECU held a question and<lb />answer session last night in Hen-<lb />drix Theater. The meeting gave<lb />students and staff members an<lb />opportunity to discuss what ECU<lb />is doing to safeguard its students<lb />from a similar occurrence.<lb /><lb /> oA tragedy such as this serves<lb />as a reminder to all universities<lb />about the importance of safety<lb />initiatives and plans of actions<lb />if this were to happen at their<lb />respective institution, ? said Keri<lb /><lb />ECU<lb />student<lb /><lb />be ASG<lb /><lb />president<lb /><lb />M. Dillard<lb />said. oThe teddy bears represent<lb />children that have either died in Iraq<lb /><lb />or American children that have lost<lb /><lb /> parents because of the war. ?<lb /><lb />For the exhibit, 76 combat boots<lb />were set up in a military formation to<lb />represent the.76 N.C. service poe<lb />that have died in Iraq.<lb /><lb /> oWe all hear numbers on the<lb />news of how many people have<lb />died, but it is hard to visualize them<lb />as people. It seems like it is just a<lb />number, ? said Jill Doub, AmeriCorps<lb />Vista member with Habitat for<lb /><lb />_ Humanity. oThis exhibit helps stu-<lb />dents to picture people filling these<lb /><lb />shoes and it puts a human face to the<lb />numbers. It just makes it very real<lb />and yery powerful because people<lb />can see themselves in these shoes. ?<lb /><lb />Students were also able to look at<lb />pictures and read display boards about<lb />the financial concerns of the war.<lb /><lb />On Friday, a panel discussion<lb />along with a question and answer<lb />session was held as part of the exhibit.<lb /><lb />Jacek Teller, an ECU student<lb />and Iraq war veteran, spoke on the<lb />panel about his personal experiences<lb />with the war and why he is now<lb />against it.<lb /><lb />Economist Kash Mansori and<lb />Summer Lipford, the mother of a<lb />soldier killed in Iraq, spoke on the<lb />panel as well.<lb /><lb /> oWe thought it was important<lb /><lb />to have this exhibit and discussion<lb />because we wanted to get people<lb />talking, ? Doub said. oIt seems like<lb />a lot of people are unaware of what<lb />is going on so they don Tt voice their<lb />opinion or talk about these things. It<lb />was important for us not to come out<lb />here and say, this is a huge anti-war<lb />exhibit, come out if you are anti-war T<lb />That is not what we are trying to do,<lb />our goal is to get everyone thinking,<lb />talking and learning. ?<lb /><lb />Eyes Wide Open travels through-<lb />out N.C. and will head to David-<lb />son College, Guilford College and<lb />Highpoint University in the future.<lb /><lb /> oAs a student, I hope that this<lb />will empower some people to speak<lb />up and say how they feel about<lb />things, ? said Laura Taylor, sopho-<lb />more anthropology major. oThis is<lb />a very sheltered, comfortable place<lb />to live so a lot of people don Tt know<lb />what is really going on. I think this<lb />helps people to see what it is like in<lb />Iraq and hopefully it will encourage<lb />students to speak out and make a<lb />difference. ?<lb /><lb />For more information about<lb />Eyes Wide Open, students can visit<lb />ewonc.org or afsc.org/eyes.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />news@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Memorial Lecture on Social Justice held<lb /><lb />UN special court war<lb />crimes tribunal speaks<lb /><lb />CARMIN BLACK<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />On April 12, at 2 p.m. in the<lb />A.J. The families of the two<lb />soldiers were initially told they<lb />were killed by enemy fire.<lb />According to Army Col. Daniel<lb />Baggio, unit commanders in Iraq<lb />did not initially suspect they<lb /><lb />~ were killed by U.S. forces, but<lb /><lb />an investigation by the unit has<lb />found that may be a possibility.<lb />A supplemental report filed Feb.<lb />28 suggested that the initial<lb />reports might be wrong but that<lb />an investigation was still under<lb />way, he said. It took another<lb />month before the families of<lb />the two soldiers were told, on<lb />March 31, that friendly fire was<lb />suspected.<lb /><lb />Wednesday Ts disclosure<lb /><lb />comes on the heels of the<lb />announcement last week that<lb />nine high-ranking Army officers,<lb />including four generals, made<lb /><lb />the friendly fire death of<lb /><lb />Army Ranger Pat Tillman in<lb />Afghanistan. <lb />pinion<lb /><lb />To the ECU Campus Community, Virginia Tech<lb /><lb />Community, friends and family:<lb /><lb />We would like to offer our sympathies in connection<lb />with the tragedy that occurred yesterday at Virginia<lb />Tech. The loss of life sustained by the school will not<lb />be forgotten, nor will the voices of those that mourn,<lb /><lb />both here and throughout the rest of the country.<lb /><lb />Today Ts issue offers articles that reflect and comment<lb />upon these recent events in an effort to enlighten<lb />and comfort readers, and address various aspects<lb /><lb />of the shooting.<lb /><lb />We encourage everyone to keep an open mind and<lb />open heart for those that suffer as you peruse today Ts<lb />issue. In.a way, we all suffer, as we are united as a<lb /><lb />nation in shock.<lb /><lb />Although details emerge even as each of you read,<lb />the world will likely never know for sure why such<lb />a horrendous thing would happen, could happen. All<lb />that can be done from here is to pick up the pieces,<lb /><lb />to remember, and to rebuild.<lb /><lb />Our hearts go out to those who have suffered in<lb />this tragedy, and know that we are all grieved,<lb />as college students, faculty members, staff mem-<lb />bers, parents, siblings and as Americans. We<lb />will remember those we lost yesterday at Vir-<lb /><lb />ginia Tech; it could have been any one of us.<lb /><lb />We will do our best to represent the consequences<lb />and aftermath of what has, unfortunately, assumed its<lb /><lb />place as the worst shooting in our nation Ts history.<lb /><lb />We also sincerely hope that such a terrible event<lb />may never happen again, neither during our lifetimes<lb /><lb />nor in the lives of those that follow in our footsteps.<lb /><lb />With deepest sympathy,<lb /><lb />The East Carolinian Editorial Board<lb /><lb />Media crosses<lb />the line in VA<lb /> Tech tragedy "<lb /><lb />Everyone needs to back off<lb /><lb />JASON PATTY<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />There is no doubt. that what has happened in<lb />Blacksburg, Va. is a terrible tragedy that will affect<lb />people for years to come. It is not, however, the police<lb />chief Ts fault. Nor is it the university president's fault.<lb /><lb />The media, clamoring for their resignations, is<lb />doing nothing but yelling. They have no facts to report,<lb />so they have found something to just make noise about.<lb />There are reporters yelling at the police chief during<lb />interviews. What are they thinking? Since when is the<lb />media entitled to know everything immediately? Do<lb />they not understand that they are hindering an inves-<lb />tigation? Do they not have any respect for the families<lb />of these students?<lb /><lb />When police found out that two people were<lb />murdered this morning in a dormitory, that Ts all the<lb />information that they had in which to base their actions.<lb />They knew that someone had gotten into an argument<lb />with his girlfriend, and then shot her and the RA that<lb />came out to break up the dispute. This in no way pointed<lb />toward a mass killing two hours later. They had infor-<lb />mation leading them to believe that the killer had left the<lb />dorm and they were actively searching for him. While<lb />the shooting of these two people is certainly tragic, it<lb />is not amass murder. The shooter did not shoot anyone<lb />else in the dorm that morning.<lb /><lb />Furthermore, locking down a campus the size of<lb />Virginia Tech Ts would not have done any good. First,<lb />it probably would not have been very effective. The<lb />logistics of such an operation are pretty impressive.<lb />Secondly, the shooter was obviously still on campus.<lb />The same results would have been obtained.<lb /><lb />The media needs to give the police and investigators<lb />some room to do their job. Their time needs to be spent<lb />identifying this man and figuring out what motivated<lb />him. Families need to be notified, and arrangements<lb />for their arrival need to be made. There is no reason for<lb />them to be wasting time getting yelled at by reporters<lb />because they couldn't prevent such a horrible tragedy.<lb /><lb />There are also many already screaming for more<lb />gun control. As we've seen in the past, more laws don Tt<lb />limit the access that criminals have to guns. Further-<lb />more, if one student in the classroom had a concealed<lb />and carry permit and it was legal to posses a firearm on<lb />a college campus, this tragedy could have been stopped<lb />much more quickly and with much less loss of life.<lb /><lb />Hindsight is 20-20 and I am sure that the adminis-<lb />trators at Virginia Tech would love.to go back and do<lb />things differently, but at the time of the incident they<lb />acted on all of the information available to them. Firing<lb />these people for something that they could not control<lb />will not bring back these 33 students and faculty mem-<lb />bers. The police need to be figuring out how to prevent<lb />another one of these from happening, not answering<lb />mindless questions from reporters.<lb /><lb />{ Something to ponder }<lb /><lb />TUESDAY APRIL 17, 2007<lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />RIP to all of those that died in VT<lb />shootings.<lb /><lb />PAGE A4.<lb /><lb />2 =<lb />ty miner<lb />Plena<lb /><lb />The East Carolinian does not endorse statements made in Pirate Rants. Meow.<lb /><lb />Imus hates nappy hair<lb /><lb />My hair was nappy while | was<lb />writing this<lb /><lb />BRIDGET TODD<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />I Tm probably the only black person in the<lb />country who doesn Tt.think Don Imus deserves to<lb />be fired. His onappy headed ho ? comment didn Tt<lb />upset me. Sure, it was offensive, insensitive and all<lb />of that. And if Imus were a lawmaker, a judge, a<lb />politician or anything other than some radio guy,<lb />I probably would have, cared. But he isn Tt. He Ts<lb />a cranky old radio talk show host whose whole<lb />thing is being edgy and in your face. He Ts not in<lb />any kind of position where his opinion affects<lb />minorities in any real way. It Ts not like he Ts making<lb />laws or influencing public policy. He Ts just some<lb />stupid racist guy on the radio... so who cares?<lb /><lb />And honestly, as far as:'racist remarks go, Imus<lb /><lb /> handled it very well. He immediately apologized to<lb /><lb />America for his comment, he asked to meet the team<lb />to personally apologize, and he even went on Al<lb />Sharpton Ts radio program. He didn Tt pull a Michael<lb />Richards, and offer a strange, rambling apology.<lb />days later. No one seems to be giving Imus a break,<lb />especially not Reverend Jesse Jackson who held a<lb />boycott that called for Imus T termination for his oacts<lb />of racial bigotry. ? That Ts pretty weird, considering in<lb />1984 Jackson himself referred to Jews as oHymies ?<lb /><lb />i<lb />* ab<lb /><lb />and referred to New York City and oHymietown. ?<lb /><lb />The fact that Imus was fired speaks of the hypoc-<lb />risy of CBS. Imus has made scores of racist, anti-<lb />Semitic and sexist comments in the past. He once<lb />referred to PBS anchor Gwen Ifill as othe cleaning<lb />lady. ? He called a black New York Times columnist<lb /> oa New York Times quota hire. ? He repeatedly used<lb />the term oragheads ? to describe Arabs. The list<lb />could go on and on. If CBS or MSNBC really cared<lb />about promoting racial harmony, they would have<lb />fired Imus after his previous remarks. Or maybe<lb />they wouldn't have put a radio show that promotes<lb /><lb /> T race and gender insensitivity on the air in the first "<lb /><lb />place. The only reason they fired him now is because<lb />advertisers are complaining.<lb /><lb />Ifour country weren't so caught up in punishing<lb />people, maybe there would be a desire to educate<lb />Imus rather than just fire him. Maybe have him<lb />go to a black hair salon, and see what black girls<lb />(myself included) do to keep their hair from look-<lb />ing onappy. ? Have him read Black No More, George<lb />Schuyler Ts influential novel about black identity, skin<lb />whitening and wanting to be something you're not.<lb />Someone should be encouraging Imus to learn and<lb />reform, not just slink into anonymity.<lb /><lb /> We have a problem in.America with misplaced ©<lb /> anger. Imus didn Tt just make up the phrase onappy<lb /><lb />headed ho ? on his own. It came from someplace. So<lb />maybe we should be angry that we live in a culture<lb />that includes racist and sexist speech; we shouldn't<lb />Just be blindly angry with Imus for promoting it.<lb /><lb />by<lb /><lb /> che -all-<lb /><lb />American<lb />race war<lb /><lb />Time for both sides to shut up<lb /><lb />JARED JACKSON<lb />SPORTS WRITER<lb /><lb />Since radio personality Don Imus called the Rutgers<lb />women Ts basketball team onappy-headed hoes ? on his<lb />show two weeks ago, all hell has broken loose in the media.<lb /><lb />I'm not saying that Imus Ts remarks were right, far<lb />from it in fact, but ifit wasn't for the barrage of media that<lb /><lb /> oswarmed to cover his remarks, I dare say*that most of<lb /><lb />America would have never found out about the incident.<lb /><lb />Imus did deserve to be fired; he had pushed the<lb />boundaries of the media too long for this not to have<lb />been the conclusion.<lb /><lb />The incident offers without a doubt the poorest<lb />choice of words that I can think of, but I was appalled<lb />when I turned on my television and witnessed Rever-<lb />end Ts Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton speaking for the<lb />African American community in the aftermath of the<lb />Imus remarks.<lb /><lb />These two claim to carry the word of the late great<lb />Martin Luther King, yet they continue to do everything<lb />in their power to demolish the path to an equal nation<lb />where everyone will be the same no matter the color of<lb />the one Ts skin.<lb /><lb />The message of racial equality that King was trying:<lb />to send has suffered drastically since Jackson and Sharp-<lb />ton have been the unofficial spokesmen for the African<lb />American community.<lb /><lb />They have been turning African American Ts against<lb />Caucasian Ts and vice versa for the past 20 years.<lb /><lb />For instance, Jackson rushed to the aid of the so-<lb />called victim of the Duke Lacrosse case; even offering to<lb />pay her tuition. In the meanwhile, he pretty much con-<lb />demned the three accused for a crime they. didn Tt commit.<lb /><lb />Come on folks, playing the white " black card is get-<lb />ting old; no matter how it is used. I Tm sick of seeing-Cau-<lb />casian Ts blaming African Americans and vice versa.<lb /><lb />However, that Ts clearly the tool of the trade that<lb />Jackson and Sharpton have mastered.<lb /><lb />While I'm trying to state my opinion on this case<lb />it might be best to let a member from the African<lb />American community offer his view on this out of<lb />control situation.<lb /><lb />Jason Whitlock, a columnist for AOL Sports,<lb />authored by the far the best article on this situation.<lb /><lb />Whitlock presents Jackson as the president of the<lb />African American community and Sharpton as the<lb />Vice President.<lb /><lb /> oWe need to take a cue from White America and<lb />re-elect our leadership every four years, ? said Whitlock.<lb /> oWhite folks realize that power corrupts. That Ts why<lb />they placed term limits on the presidency. They know if<lb />you leave a man in power too long he quits looking out<lb />for the interest of his constituency and starts looking<lb />out for his own best interests.<lb /><lb /> oRather than inspire us to seize hard-earned oppor-_.<lb />tunities, Jesse and Al have specialized in blackmailing<lb />white folks for profit and attention, T Whitlock added.<lb /><lb />At the end of end of his column, Whitlock offers<lb />some advice of Jackson and Sharpton.<lb /><lb />"It Ts time for Jesse and Al to step down, ? Whitlock<lb />said. oThey've had 25 years to lead us. Other than their<lb />accountants, I Td be hard pressed to find someone who<lb />has benefited from their administration. ?<lb /><lb />With that being said, in the day and age that musical<lb />artists of each race label women as bitches, ho Ts, sluts<lb /><lb />and many over derogatory terms; the battle doesn Tt rest<lb /><lb />with just radio jocks.<lb /><lb />It Ts time to take a look at the real issue at hand. The<lb />music we as college students listen to or maybe even the<lb />music our kids listen to places a dramatic effect on the<lb />way we view life itself and in this case women.<lb /><lb />Everyday remarks similar to the one Imus made<lb />make their way into a magazine, onto television, or are<lb />heard throughout certain types of music.<lb /><lb />So does firing Imus even remotely stop racism? I<lb />think not, but it Ts a step in the right direction.<lb /><lb />The racial lines have been drawn once again and we<lb />as a nation should set out to prove we are bigger than<lb />three words a radio host used or the two reverends that<lb />supposedly came to the rescue.<lb /><lb />It is time to fulfill the dream that Martin Luther<lb />King Jr. once shared with a nation and make progress<lb />towards living as one nation undivided by skin tone.<lb /><lb />However for the time being, just remember to watch<lb />what you say or you could be sitting in Imus T shoes.<lb /><lb />Sarah Bell<lb />Editor in Chief<lb /><lb />Elizabeth Lauten<lb />Asst. The library is full of students<lb />with their heads in books, desperately trying to retain<lb />information from a'semester of classes and labs.<lb /><lb />With exams right around the corner, students<lb />can feel overwhelmingly stressed out. Most students<lb />are cramming for more than four or five exams at<lb />a time, all hoping for good grades in their classes.<lb />All their work from the entire semester has boiled<lb />down to this.<lb /><lb />Healthy stress can be a good thing; it can be the<lb />driving force behind a student. However, it can also<lb />be dangerous. Unhealthy stress can cause physical,<lb /><lb />mental and emotional problems that can harm a T<lb /><lb />person in the long run.<lb /><lb />Finding ways to dodge dangerous levels of stress<lb />is key to keeping sane, even under the extreme pres-<lb />sures that exams provide.<lb /><lb />There are many ways that students can avoid<lb />this bad stress.<lb /><lb />Mental Health Outreach Specialist for the Center<lb /><lb />| . for Counseling and Student Development, Renita<lb /><lb />Moore says that following a few good study habits<lb />during exam time will keep students cool under<lb />stress:<lb /><lb />1. Do not procrastinate. Chances are you are<lb /><lb />going to be tested on a lot of material at once, so<lb />start studying at least two weeks in advance of your<lb />exams if possible.<lb /><lb />2. Be sure to get adequate sleep. When a person<lb />is well rested, he/she retains information better and<lb />is able to concentrate longer. Try to get 6 " 8 hours<lb /><lb />of sleep per night.<lb /><lb />3. Easy on the junk food! Snacks that are high<lb />in sugar and salt will only temporarily satisfy your<lb />hunger, leaving you vulnerable to hunger distrac-<lb />tions as you try to study. Try to snack on things<lb /><lb /> like fresh fruits or veggies, pretzels, baked chips or<lb /><lb />crackers with peanut butter. For more nutrition tips,<lb />contact Student Health or the Campus Recreation &amp;<lb /><lb />Wellness staff.<lb /><lb />4. Reward yourself. Once you have had a pro-<lb />ductive study session, reward yourself by doing<lb />something fun and relaxing. This will give you<lb />more of an incentive to stay on task and know that<lb />something fun awaits<lb /><lb />6. Surround yourself with people who are<lb />not stressing. When you are around a person at<lb />their wits end, you tend to become more anxious.<lb />Maybe embark on your no stress exam prep with<lb />two or three friends to keep each other motivated<lb />along the way.<lb /><lb />Danica Wanko, sophomore fitness major, has<lb />been following these steps since she came to ECU<lb /><lb />see EXAMS page A7<lb /><lb /></p>

More<lb />importantly, Dodge placed two<lb /><lb />National Family Plans<lb />(even friends can share)<lb /><lb />1400 minutes for $89.99 a month<lb /><lb />UNLIMITED<lb /><lb />Mobile-to-Mobile Minutes<lb /><lb />UNLIMITED<lb /><lb />Night &amp; Weekend Minutes<lb /><lb />(Starting at 7:00 p.m.)<lb /><lb />FREE<lb /><lb />Incoming Text Messages<lb /><lb />kicks inside the opponent Ts 20 yard<lb />line while Przestrzlski added one.<lb />After the game, Holtz Ts assess-<lb />ment of the spring game madeit clear<lb />that along with flashes of brilliance<lb />from certain positions, the offensive<lb />line is one area that needs to improve.<lb /> oThere are a lot of positives and<lb />a lot of negatives, ? Holtz said of the<lb />game. oI thought that a few of the<lb /><lb />_ skill players really stepped up and<lb /><lb />played well and the three running<lb />backs played hard. It-is good to see<lb />them run as well as they did and I<lb />think those three are going to be fine.<lb /><lb /> oTreally like our defensive line, I<lb />think they could be very good. Our<lb />offensive line is still really young<lb />and they make a lot of mistakes. ~<lb />Right now, when you take the offen-<lb />sive line and split them in half and<lb />put them on two teams, we don Tt<lb />have two solid units yet, and that<lb />was pretty obvious today. We're<lb />still not there and we have to make<lb />all the little adjustments. ?<lb /><lb />The spring game signaled the<lb />end of what Holtz calls ophase<lb />two ? of spring practice and he<lb />concedes that the team is a ways from<lb />being ready to head to Blacksburg<lb /><lb />Scott<lb />Motorola KRZR<lb />Tennessee<lb /><lb />for the first regular season game<lb />against Virginia Tech on Sept 1.<lb /><lb /> oTm encouraged, ? Holtz said.<lb /> oI think we are better in so many<lb />positions, but I Tm still not satis-<lb />fied. We're not ready to play; in<lb />fact, we're a long ways away from<lb />being ready to play. I Tm encouraged<lb />because we are making some plays,<lb />we're throwing, we're making some<lb />strides, but still a long way away<lb />from being where we need to be in<lb />order to be competitive against the<lb />schedule we have, especially early<lb />in the season. ?<lb /><lb /> oAnd while the team is a long<lb />ways away for becoming ready to<lb />compete against a treacherous Sep-<lb />tember schedule, Holtz believes they<lb />are on the right track. t<lb /><lb /> oT think this team wants to be<lb />good, and we say it all the time<lb /> "one thing we can control is to<lb />make sure we are as good as we can -<lb />be, and the only way we can do that<lb />is coming out here everyday and<lb />giving a great effort, ? Holtz said.<lb /> oThis team is already doing that. ?<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinan.com.<lb /><lb /> Vm running late<lb /><lb />_ I'll meet you at Bears.<lb /><lb />Rentme shoes,<lb />size nine. /]<lb /><lb />Freshman running back Justin Lee comes up just short on the end zone.<lb /><lb />vy<lb /><lb />'No, work Ts<lb />_ lustamess,<lb />Im Shatin a<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />Take our best network challenge,<lb />test our products, experience our<lb />customer service and make sure<lb /><lb />they are right for you.<lb /><lb />FK US Cellular<lb /><lb />Tracy<lb />Motorola Fire Red RAZR<lb />Tennessee<lb /><lb /></p>
