By receiv-<lb />ing this award, ECU has joined<lb />the ranks of which only 39 other<lb />university police departments<lb />nationwide may also attest.<lb /><lb />Accreditation allows. police<lb />agencies to willingly exhibit their<lb />"commitment to excellence" in<lb />the field of law enforcement.<lb />By achieving this status, police<lb />departments not only work to fur-<lb />ther strengthen community ties,<lb />but also hold all aspects of the law<lb />more accountable.<lb /><lb />"It is a change in documenta-<lb />tion. Everything is becoming more<lb />detailed, more specific. If I<lb />had not taken good notes then,<lb />the guy could have easily natu-<lb />rally changed appearances and<lb />you wouldn't know it was the guy<lb />until the judge called his name.<lb />Accreditation helps to change<lb />this," Perry said.<lb /><lb />The program begins when an<lb />agency believes they meet certain<lb />prerequisites. By voluntarily sub-<lb />mitting an application to the Com-<lb />mission on Accreditation for Law<lb />Enforcement Agencies, police depart-<lb />ments express their interest towards<lb />working for accreditation status.<lb /><lb />An on-site assessment of ECU's<lb />police department followed, allow-<lb />ing CALEA to see procedures and<lb />guidelines that may or may not be<lb />taking place.<lb /><lb />Photo by Zach Siirkin<lb /><lb />"It's an evolving process," said<lb />Lt. There are an estimated<lb /><lb />- 60 million dogs and 70 million<lb /><lb />cats in the United States, accord-<lb />ing to the American ronal<lb />Medical Association.<lb /><lb />The veterinary hospital chain saw<lb /><lb />1 million dogs and cats during ~<lb />the three months when the more<lb /><lb />than 100 brands of now-recalled<lb />contaminated pet food were sold.<lb />It saw 284 extra cases of kidney<lb />failure among cats during that<lb />period, or a roughly 30 percent in-<lb />crease when compared with back-<lb />ground rates. It's not clear if those<lb />animals ate the contaminated<lb />food, though it seems likely.<lb /><lb />"It has meaning, when you see a<lb /><lb />peak like that. We see so many<lb />pets here, and it coincided with<lb />the recall period," said veterinar-<lb />ian Hugh Lewis, who oversees the<lb />mining of Banfield's database to<lb />do clinical studies. The chain con-<lb />tinues to share its data with the<lb />Food and Drug Administration.<lb /><lb />In the three weeks since the first <lb />pet food was recalled, Banfield<lb />vets have examined 1,605 cats<lb />and dogs reported to have eaten<lb />the recalled food. That is less than<lb />1 percent of pets examined. <p>cm<lb /><lb />|<lb /><lb />Opini<lb /><lb />OF<lb /><lb />Gwens<lb />cutest pets<lb /><lb />How long until Gucci makes a purse<lb />to carry Asian girls?<lb /><lb />BRIDGET TODD<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Like many girls who came of age in the late a<lb /><lb />nineties, I once harbored a creeping fascination<lb />with all things Gwen Stefani. I envied her amazing<lb />abs. I yearned for the courage and lack of parental<lb /><lb />supervision necessary to dye my hair pink. While |<lb /><lb />Britney and Christina Aguilera were glossy gyrating<lb />pictures of what I could never be, Gwen was there<lb />with her kick-butt attitude and low-key style. And<lb />I loved her for it.<lb /><lb />. Gwen and I lost touch over the years, but I |<lb /><lb />assumed she was still spin-kicking through the<lb />MTV airwaves in her platform sneakers inspiring<lb />another generation of girls to not trade in their Keds.<lb />for stilettos just yet.<lb /><lb />She is not. She is, however, parading around with<lb />four cute Asian girls in tow. They are her Harajuku<lb />girls: Love, Angel, Music and Baby (I wonder if there _<lb />was a Roots-esque scene wherein Gwen forces her<lb />Harajuku harem to accept their cutesy new names).<lb /><lb />Now I didn't know it was possible to actually<lb />collect human beings, but if you were going to, you<lb />could do a lot worse than four pretty Asians girls.<lb /><lb />The Harajuku girls are cute, they giggle a lot _<lb />_ Things would be so much better<lb /><lb />and wear knee socks. And I guess racial stereotypes<lb />can be pretty fashionable. Besides, what's more chic<lb />than a tall blonde being followed around by a pack<lb />of silent Asian caricatures?<lb /><lb />_. Of course, Gwen isn't the first musician to<lb />"borrow" the style of a minority group and call it<lb />her own. Just mention the name Elvis around one<lb />of my blues-playin' uncles and you'll get an entire<lb />dissertation on the subject of whitewashing in music.<lb />(Are you listening Justin Timberlake?) However,<lb />in Stefani's case, the whole thing is made more<lb />troubling by her altering of the Harajuku facet of<lb />Japanese culture to reflect a racist stereotype.<lb /><lb />It would be one thing if she just thought Hara-<lb />juku was a cool look and used it in her videos. Why<lb />does she even need to incorporate the meek Asian<lb />schoolgirl aspect at all? Does something have to<lb />be offensive and completely distorted before it's<lb /><lb />' marketable?<lb /><lb />MiHi Ahn, essayist and cultural critic for salon.<lb />com maintains, "Stefani fawns over Harajuku style<lb />in her lyrics, but her appropriation of this subcul-<lb />ture makes about as much sense as the Gap selling<lb />Anarchy T-shirts; she's swallowed a subversive<lb />youth culture in Japan and barfed up another image<lb />of submissive giggling Asian women."<lb /><lb />On her blog Margaretcho.com, comedian<lb />extraordinaire Margaret Cho compares Stefani's<lb />particular form of Asian fetishism to the minstrel<lb />shows of yesteryear. I can see the similarity-white<lb />person is captivated by a particular subculture of a<lb />minority group, cranks it up about a million notches,<lb />thereby claiming it as her own. .<lb /><lb />As an even sadder note on Asian invisibility in<lb />the media, Cho maintains that while Stefani's use of<lb />Asian girls as props makes her cringe, it's better than<lb />nothing. She writes, "At least it is a measure of vis-<lb /><lb />ibility, which is much better than invisibility. 1am so -<lb /><lb />sick of not existing, that I would settle for following<lb />any white person around with an umbrella just so I<lb />could say I was there." Now that sh*t is bananas.<lb /><lb />Ms. Pelosi<lb />goes to Syria<lb /><lb />Waves from all sides follow<lb /><lb />YAZID FINN<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />All right Ms. Pelosi, you have done it! You are<lb />the first woman to become Speaker of the House,<lb />the third highest ranked political official in the<lb />United States! 3<lb /><lb />Now let me ask you, which one of your bright<lb />aides decided that among your first actions in this<lb />position would be to visit Syria? Don't you know<lb />that Egypt is always a safe bet?<lb /><lb />Let us take this trip step by step. To begin, you<lb />choose a state that you know for a fact the current<lb />President does not approve of. You know the United<lb />State's government has the Sunni majority country<lb />listed as a sponsor of terror for the Shi'a organization<lb />Hezbullah (if that is not inter-religious cooperation,<lb />I do not know what is). .<lb /><lb />Now, granted, you were not the only political :<lb /><lb />official to visit Syria in the past month. Your Repub-<lb />lican colleagues have you beat there. But, Ms. Pelosi,<lb />you must remember that you are always going to be<lb />a prime target for the media, your every action will<lb />be watched and publicized.<lb />If you are planning on going on another fact-<lb />finding mission, maybe take it somewhere the cur-<lb /><lb />rent administration approves of. Like the Virgin<lb /><lb />Islands... or Hawaii...<lb /><lb />This leads to the second most talked-about<lb /><lb />aspect of your trip. The topic of interest is your hijab<lb />dawned while entering al-Umayyad mosque.<lb />While some media outlets have described this<lb />scene as "subservient," how quickly they forget the<lb />First Lady's trip to al-Aqsa mosque in 2005. How<lb />about Condoleezza Rice? Was this really an issue<lb />of "bowing" down to the Middle East, or saying a<lb /><lb />_ symbolic thanks to your hosts?<lb /><lb />Now I for one think it is great to practice the old<lb />adage "while in Rome..." Why, I could swear even<lb />Pervez Musharraf was sporting some Sperry Top-<lb />Siders while visiting "The Daily Show" last fall. So<lb />what it comes down to is respect, and Ms. Pelosi,<lb />you showed it. As the leading representative of the<lb />United States, maybe your fellow congressmen will<lb />follow your lead in something they rarely partake |<lb /><lb />-in-doing the right thing.<lb /><lb />(o) os a<lb />figion Exawiner<lb />AR Bes SUAWANEL. Wrong. Not<lb /><lb />' these days.<lb /><lb />It is easy to believe that the same thing that hap- -<lb />pened in the days of our grandparents will happen<lb />_ to us. We go away to a university, we meet some<lb />strapping young man who vies for our love against<lb /><lb />the will of our parents, he sweeps us off our feet,<lb /><lb />and we live happily ever after. We reach the 50th<lb /><lb />anniversary and everything.<lb />I am just completely sick of hearing these love<lb /><lb />riage and children anytime I go ona date! Especially<lb /><lb />when, according to Divorce Magazine (yes, there is a<lb />'magazine for this lovely aberration), people getting<lb />- married at our age have a 40 percent divorce rate.<lb />Why is this happening?<lb /><lb />A large amount of us are just not ready for the<lb /><lb />_big ball and chain, and we would much rather focus<lb />"on careers and finding ourselves before we can<lb /><lb />really find someone else to complete us. The aver-<lb />age marriage age is rising, and you know what? It<lb />is a good thing. The longer we wait to make this<lb /><lb />decision and to make sure we have found the right -<lb /><lb />one, the better.<lb />Two young marriages in my extended family<lb /><lb />10 at 12 13 14 15 16<lb /><lb />stories and having friends and family hint about mar- |<lb /><lb />have already begun to fall apart, with all ofthe part-<lb />ners being in their mid-twenties. Counseling and<lb />separation have plagued the one-year and five-year<lb />marriage. These couples were together beginning<lb />in their first years of college and married at the age<lb />that most couples did back when our parents were<lb />getting together. Look at them now!<lb /><lb />However, there are exceptions. One out of all my<lb />friends' parents has been together since eighth grade.<lb />They live happily together in a nice suburb, and they -<lb />have a wonderful daughter and two dogs. I am not<lb />going: to lie; I have always wanted that perfect love<lb />story like theirs. Don't we all?<lb /><lb />The average marriage age now is around 26, and<lb />rightfully so. The age of 22 just is not what it used<lb />to be. With college years lasting longer than the<lb /><lb />prescribed four, and with graduate school, traveling<lb /><lb />careers and the tendency of our society to focus on<lb />the individual, I say the older the better.<lb /><lb />Some people may argue that the later we get<lb />married, the less time we will spend together in<lb />life. Well, not really. The average human lifespan<lb />has increased to around 100! That is more than<lb />enough time to find yourself, to find your love, to<lb />have children, to find a perfect career and to find<lb />that perfect house.<lb /><lb />Marriage is supposed to be the big move, and it<lb />is just being proven repeatedly that a vast majority<lb />of adults our age cannot hold a marriage together<lb />yet. So, in the spirit of that, rejoice in the years we<lb />have until after college. It is possible to find happi-<lb />ness and love somewhere else. Marrying our college<lb />sweetheart may be our dream, but should it be our<lb />reality?<lb /><lb />iT 18 BS) AO) ale 22 23 24<lb /><lb />~ Opinion Editor<lb /><lb />Big business<lb />vs. sclence<lb /><lb />The perils of politicized science<lb /><lb />JUSTIN SUMMERS<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Not too long ago I was engaged in a senseless<lb />geopolitical debate that is not uncommon in my daily<lb />life. Different from my usual arguments, I was not<lb />Bush hating or "spouting liberal diarrhea" as one<lb />person so colorfully put it, rather I was ranting about<lb />something I felt anyone would agree was a problem:<lb />Global warming. This particular person (we'll call<lb />him Jake for now) did not seem to care about global<lb /><lb />3 warming and actually was determined to "debunk"<lb /><lb />its existence.<lb /><lb />Jake stated that global warming is a theory<lb />invented by climatologists to scare us and fill their<lb />pockets in the process. He supported this idea by<lb />quoting a petition signed by thousands of "scientists"<lb />that discredits the validity of global warming.<lb /><lb />Now, I did not believe Jake because he is not<lb /><lb />_a scientist and made no effort to include scientific<lb /><lb />evidence in his diatribe, but I was still stunned to<lb />hear someone try to disprove a theory that I thought<lb />had been validated by almost every scientific body<lb />in the world.<lb /><lb />What I came to find out was that Jake was not<lb />wrong, there was in fact a signed petition that aimed<lb />to debunk global warming. Where he was misin-<lb />formed, though, was thinking the people who signed<lb />the document were credible scientists. Actually, these<lb />people were just scholars, bankrolled by corporations<lb />to misinform everyday people like Jake.<lb /><lb />The people who misinformed Jake were a group<lb /><lb />of pseudo-scientists whose aim was to increase cor-<lb /><lb />porate profits or political popularity by decreasing<lb />the public's awareness on global warming or simply<lb />misinforming them about it.<lb /><lb />By convincing people that global warming doesn't<lb />exist, companies like Exxon prolong actions taken<lb />to reduce emissions and thereby ensure profits into<lb />the foreseeable future.<lb /><lb />Most of the organizations that aim to disprove<lb />global warming are backed by companies that depend<lb />on the abundance and consumption of fossil fuels.<lb /><lb />The automotive industry and manufacturing<lb />companies make up a large percentage of contribu-<lb />tors, but no group likes to misinform more than the<lb /><lb />oil industry.<lb /><lb />In 2004 alone, Exxon funded 29 climate-change<lb />denial groups with almost $20 million. These groups<lb />seem like environmental organizations but are really<lb />just the opposite.<lb /><lb />Denial groups bear names such as the Informa-<lb />tion Council on the Environment, or the Science<lb />and Environmental Policy Project and use this<lb />environmentalist fagade to fake citizens and politi-<lb />cians alike.<lb /><lb />Thanks to the effectiveness of these organiza-<lb />tions there have been many setbacks in policy aimed<lb />to limit carbon dioxide emissions. President Bush<lb />rejected the Kyoto Protocol, an international treaty<lb />that sets goals to reduce emissions because climate<lb />change was "not universally accepted" among other<lb />things. ;<lb /><lb />We are one of the only nations in the developed<lb /><lb />world yet to accept the treaty and make proactive<lb /><lb />decisions to help stop global warming.<lb /><lb />More recently, Bush rejected a bill to set a cap<lb />on CO2 emissions. Until the media pundits and false<lb />scientists are rejected, we will never be able to con-<lb />vince the public that global warming is an important<lb /><lb />"issue, and if we do not do anything about it, there<lb /><lb />will be consequences.<lb /><lb />The fact of the matter is there is still a lot to be<lb />learned about global warming and there is a ton we<lb />don't know about our affect on the world's climate,<lb /><lb />_ but these groups who aim to misinform us are merely<lb /><lb />exacerbating the problem.<lb />My aim with this article is not to convince you<lb /><lb />_that everyone is lying to us about global warming, but<lb />'rather to inform you that some people are. Before you<lb /><lb />accept something as the truth, you should do some<lb />research on your own and find out who's doing the<lb />research and who's profiting from it.<lb /><lb />Sarah Bell<lb />Editor in Chief<lb /><lb />Jenelle Conner Elizabeth Lauten<lb /><lb />News Editor Asst. While couples<lb />that choose to end their relation-<lb />ship may base their decisions<lb />on differences in personalities,<lb />life goals or even background,<lb />it has been found that the average<lb />person will suffer at least three<lb />break-ups in their life with at least<lb />one that ends badly. ,<lb /><lb />While those who are yet to<lb />experience this kind of situation<lb />may not understand what the big<lb />deal is, they will soon know the<lb />huge amounts of effort and time<lb />that one spends mending the<lb />effects of such a loss, especially<lb />one that ends painfully.<lb /><lb />With the intention of making<lb /><lb />things easier on both parties,<lb /><lb />many couples choose to remain<lb />friends after their romantic rela-<lb />tionship ends. While some believe<lb />that beingsfriends with an ex is<lb />impossible, many have tried and<lb />found the experience to be well<lb />worth the effort. . i<lb />"Several factors determine<lb />whether or not couples can be<lb />friends after they. break up,"<lb />said Keeley Simmen, senior<lb />communication major. This shows<lb />that remaining close after ending<lb /><lb />a relationship leaves room for<lb /><lb />reconciliation and even closure<lb /><lb />for both members. .<lb /><lb />"T have had a little bit of expe-<lb />rience with each kind of break up,"<lb />Simmen said. "I am still friends<lb />with many of my exes and they are<lb />like big brothers to me now, while<lb /><lb />After the romantic relationship ends many couples find the concept of friendship alluring, but the act of doing so is oftentimes easier said than done.<lb /><lb />I had one that ended really badly<lb />and we no longer speak."<lb /><lb />The census goes further to<lb />reveal that married couples have<lb />become a minority in American<lb />households as women living with-<lb />out a spouse were at 51 percent in<lb />2005, up from 35 percent in 1950.<lb /><lb />Career Center offers valuable tools<lb /><lb />Tips to land the dream<lb />job<lb /><lb />JESSICA DUNLOW<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />Astronaut, veterinarian,<lb />teacher, designer, writer, labora-<lb />tory assistant, nurse, no matter<lb />what your dream job is, there are<lb />required skills and steps to get<lb />there. It is possible! Anyone can<lb />land their dream job, just by fol-<lb />lowing these simple steps.<lb /><lb />Step 1: The Resume. A common<lb />belief about resumes is that they<lb />always make or break an individ-<lb />ual. Well, this is partially true. The<lb />Career Center's associate director,<lb />Bruce E. Maxwell, describes the<lb />resume as an advertisement.<lb /><lb />"Take it as you are a product,<lb />and you are trying to sell it to<lb />a company, said Maxwell. This<lb />means that there is no such thing<lb />as a universal or perfect resume.<lb />Every job is different, therefore,<lb />every employer is looking for<lb />something different, and every<lb />resume needs to be tailored to the<lb />needs of the company.<lb /><lb />The Career Center offers an<lb />online Virtual Handout Cart<lb />that contains a PowerPoint pre-<lb />sentation, which provides all the<lb />guidelines needed to create the<lb />four different types of resumes:<lb />reverse chronological, functional,<lb />achievement and curriculum vita.<lb />In addition, it provides examples<lb />of each of these.<lb /><lb />Photo by Erica Chan<lb /><lb />It is important to realize which<lb />one to use since different employ-<lb />ers are seeking a variety of dis-<lb /><lb />_ tinctive qualities and skills. For<lb /><lb />instance, Paul Clifford, associate<lb />vice chancellor for alumni rela-<lb />tions, said that the first thing<lb />he looks at is "where an appli-<lb />cant went to school," except if<lb />they are older, in which case he<lb />values the "amount of experi-<lb />ence over their college degree."<lb /><lb />Step 2: The Cover Letter. The<lb />Career Center also offers a packet<lb /><lb />Students can perfect their resume and hone their interviewing skills before facing the employer of their dreams.<lb /><lb />titled The Art of Job Research<lb />Correspondence which details<lb />the four different types of cover<lb />letters that grab employers' eyes<lb />and gives example introductions,<lb />middle paragraphs and conclu-<lb />sions along with numerous com-<lb />pleted letters to reference. This<lb />is the first thing an employer will<lb />see. Therefore, it is imperative for<lb />this letter to advertise one's best<lb />attributes well within these three<lb />short paragraphs.<lb />Although, in the middle of this<lb /><lb />process, it is important to discover<lb />whom within a company makes the<lb />decision to hire someone new. This<lb />can be found through:a database<lb />that Joyner Library offers called<lb /><lb />-ResearchUSA. In this database,<lb /><lb />all occupations are numbered, and<lb />within minutes of typing in the<lb />number of the chosen field; the<lb />city and state where an individual<lb />would like to work and the average<lb />income of the company, it provides<lb /><lb />see DREAM JOB page A5<lb /><lb />The Onion makes the news funny for all<lb /><lb />After hours of studying take a break to catch some laughs from TheOnion.com, a modern day twist on satire.<lb /><lb />Just don't get it<lb />confused with the truth<lb /><lb />LAURA HUHN<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />Do you ever get tired of read-<lb />ing a newspaper or an online news<lb /><lb />_ Magazine, needing to determine<lb />for yourself the truthfulness of<lb /><lb />a story, and realizing along the<lb />way just how unhappy the news<lb /><lb />10 alls<lb /><lb />can make you? Kochetov rallied past<lb />Ching (4-6, 6-1, 6-0) at No. 1<lb />and Whitwell handled Andjelic<lb />(6-4, 6-1) at No. 3 before Bryan<lb />Oakley and Walters added 6-1,<lb />7-5 and 6-3, 6-4 victories over<lb />Chris Martel and Mascall at No.<lb />4 and 5, respectively.<lb /><lb />The Bulldogs' pair of tri-<lb />umphs came at the No. 2 and No.<lb />6 positions as Jenner dismissed<lb />Peeler 6-4, 6-2 and Matthew -<lb />Jackman outlasted Sam McSpad-<lb />den 5-7, 6-2, 6-2.<lb /><lb />The Pirates will play at Elon<lb />College today at 1 p,m. before<lb />returning home to host Mount<lb />Olive, North Carolina Central<lb />and Old Dominion this weekend<lb />to close out the regular season.<lb /><lb />'The ECU Student Media Board<lb />invites applications for the<lb />2007-2008 academic year.<lb /><lb />EDITOR<lb /><lb />The East Carolinian<lb />Applications are available in the Media Board Office<lb /><lb />(Self oe Building, 301 Evans St. Suite 205A, Greenville, NC)<lb /><lb />'The deadline for submitting an application is<lb /><lb />FRIDAY, APRIL 13, 2007, AT 5 PM<lb /><lb />For information call the Media Board office at 328-9236<lb /><lb />SGA Real World Workshop Series<lb /><lb />Money<lb />Matters<lb /><lb />Speaker: Dean Smith,<lb />Financial Director<lb />Wednesday, April 11, 2007.<lb />6pm - 7:15pm<lb /><lb />Ledonia Wright Culture Center<lb /><lb />=a 3<lb /><lb />GAD<lb /><lb />Sponsored by the SCA Junior Class and Omicron Delta Kappa,<lb />National Leadership Honor Society -<lb /><lb />Real World Series enhances students' life skills in college<lb />and beyond. People around the<lb />nation are sure to take notice of<lb />the ECU football team if it's suc-<lb />cessful, as next season will feature<lb />prominent games against regional<lb />foes and schools deep-rooted | in<lb />football tradition.<lb /><lb />ECU home games against N.C.<lb />State and UNC will surely draw<lb />near sell-out crowds and national<lb />attention to the team. Last year the<lb />Pirates set a single season-atten-<lb />dance record for Dowdy-Ficklen<lb />Stadium through six games with<lb />223,006 total tickets sold, and<lb />this year ECU is poised to set the<lb />record again.<lb /><lb />When the Wolfpack josie their<lb /><lb />first and only visit to Greenville<lb /><lb />on Nov. 20, 1999, a single game<lb />attendance record was set with<lb />50,092 fans donning purple and<lb />gold as well as red and white. As<lb />many might already know, the<lb />purple and gold prevailed, with a<lb /><lb />resounding 23-6 win. After the<lb />game the student section filtered<lb />out onto the field, and celebrated<lb />with the players.<lb /><lb />With N.C. State and the Tar-<lb />heels coming to Dowdy-Ficklen<lb />the goalposts might be coming<lb />down again.<lb /><lb />Wins over these in-state rivals<lb />and strong showings on the road at<lb />Virginia Tech and West Virginia<lb />could vault the Pirates .to. another<lb /><lb />- bowl berth. Ifthis is the case, Holtz<lb /><lb />will have the chance to do what<lb />Steve Logan, the last great ECU<lb />head coach, did.<lb /><lb />In Logan's third year as hend<lb />coach the Pirates posted a 7-4<lb />regular season record, before being<lb />shutout by [linois in the St. Jude<lb />Liberty Bowl, 30-0.<lb /><lb />In Holtz's second year at the<lb />helm the Pirates went 7-5 in the reg-<lb />ular season before being pummeled<lb />by the South Florida Bulls, 24-7.<lb /><lb />The 1995 season ended much<lb />more to Logan's liking, as his<lb /><lb />' Pirates. went back to the St. Jude<lb />Liberty Bowl, beating Stanford.<lb /><lb />19-13. Holtz's squad has a similar<lb /><lb />chance for redemption next season.<lb />This brings us to the ECU<lb />men's and women's basketball pro-<lb /><lb />- grams. This season the squads were<lb /><lb />polar opposites. While the ECU<lb />men's basketball team struggled for<lb />a conference win, the women's team<lb />achieved the type of success missing<lb />from the program for a long time.<lb /><lb />As defending C-USA champi-<lb />ons, the Pirates will host the 2007<lb />-2008 C-USA Women's Basketball<lb />Championship. ECU has a strong<lb />chance to defend its title as the<lb />young nucleus of the team, sopho-<lb />more point guards Jasmine Young<lb />and LaCoya Terry, are returning.<lb /><lb />With 'so much exposure<lb />Greenville is sure to be once again<lb />recognized as a Great American<lb />Sports Town by Sports Illustrated.<lb />The fun and excitement of Pirate<lb />Pride has returned to ECU.<lb /><lb />So at the end of this school<lb />year let us toast to another one<lb />hundred years of storied history<lb />and tradition.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />ONLINE SUMMER SESSIONS<lb /><lb />Chances are you'll never tell your kids about that killer summer you spent in a classroom.
