NEWS EDITOR<lb /><lb />Newly elected SGA executive<lb />officers and congressional represen-<lb />tatives had their victories recalled<lb />last night.<lb /><lb />After hearing the case of Matthew<lb />W. Cohen vs. the Elections Commit-<lb />tee, the SGA judicial board ruled<lb /><lb />last week Ts election be overturned.<lb /><lb />Keri Brockett (president elect),<lb />Phillip Kendall (vice president elect),<lb />Guillaume Bagal (treasurer elect)<lb />and Dena Mazie (secretary elect),<lb />and all other elected representatives<lb />will have to undergo the election<lb />process all over again.<lb /><lb />The case was held in reaction<lb />to a complaint Cohen filed last<lb />Friday against the elections com-<lb />mittee regarding staff voting in<lb />the recent student body election.<lb />In the case, SGA attorney general,<lb />Nick Genty represented Cohen, and<lb /><lb />the advocate for accused students,<lb />Augustus Willis, represented Wag-<lb />oner and the elections committee.<lb />Genty questioned Cohen regarding<lb />what the implications of what an<lb />inherently flawed election would<lb />mean to the student body if the<lb />results were allowed to stand.<lb />Cohen responded that allowing the<lb />results to stand would make SGA<lb />look bad.<lb /><lb /> oTt will hurt every part of this<lb />body ... unless we have the trust and<lb />respect of the students we represent, ?<lb />Cohen said. oOne whole branch [of<lb /><lb />KA property vandalized<lb /><lb />Photo by Lizz We;;s<lb /><lb />The Kappa Alpha fence and engraved rock were vandalized Sunday night with profanity an symbols.<lb /><lb />Police are<lb />investigating<lb /><lb />ZACK HILL<lb />SENIOR WRITER<lb /><lb />The house and property of<lb />500 East 11th Street, was van-<lb /><lb />dalized this past weekend.<lb />Sometime Sunday night<lb /><lb />sisi<lb />nh<lb /><lb />Kappa Alpha Order, located on<lb /><lb /> oBlack Pride ? and oFuck KA ?<lb /><lb />was painted on their fence and<lb /><lb />a penis was painted on the<lb /><lb />rock bearing the fraternity Ts<lb /><lb />insignia.<lb /><lb /> oIT have no idea [who did<lb /><lb />it], ? said Justin Edwards, soph-<lb />.,omore history major and presi-<lb />. dent of Kappa Alpha. T<lb /><lb />The police are currently<lb /><lb />investigating the matter.<lb /><lb />New roof for Joyner<lb /><lb />Partial roof<lb />replacement scheduled<lb />for this summer<lb /><lb />ZACK HILL<lb />SENIOR WRITER<lb /><lb />A partial roof replacement of<lb />Joyner Library will take place<lb />during the summer.<lb /><lb />The area to be worked on is<lb />to the west of Sonic Plaza and on<lb />the side facing the mall and Old<lb /><lb />_ Cafeteria Complex.<lb /><lb /> oOn Saturday, Oct. 26 a sig-<lb />nificant leak was discovered on<lb />the third floor of the west wing of<lb />Joyner Library, ? said Beth Win-<lb />stead, interim associate director<lb />for library public services.<lb /><lb />The next week additional<lb />leaks were discovered.<lb /><lb />Because of the leaks, several<lb />shelves on the floor have been<lb />draped with plastic.<lb /><lb /> oLibrary staff and student<lb />assistants removed items that<lb />were wet and put plastic over the<lb />affected shelves, ? Winstead said.<lb /><lb /> oAlthough the ECU roofers<lb />have done a good job of patching<lb />the roof and the roof is scheduled<lb />to be replaced this summer we<lb />believe it is better to be cautious<lb /><lb />Joyner Library will get a new roof to repair a leak on the third floor.<lb /><lb />because of potential for heavy<lb /><lb />showers during the spring and<lb /><lb />summer, ? said Trudy McGlohon,<lb />head of services for library build-<lb />ing operations. oFor this reason<lb />you will probably see the plastic<lb />until the new roof has been com-<lb />pleted. ?<lb /><lb />The repairs are scheduled to<lb />begin soon after the semester<lb />ends, on May 14, and are sched-<lb />uled to be completed by Aug. 11.<lb /><lb /> oTm really glad that it Ts going<lb />to be done after spring exams, ?<lb />Winstead said.<lb /><lb /> oMichael Talton, project man-<lb />ager for facilities engineering<lb />and architectural services, said<lb />that though new roofing will<lb />be installed, othe existing roof<lb />structure will remain. ?<lb /><lb />The cost of the repairs is<lb />estimated at $527,316 and was<lb />publicly bid to an outside con-<lb />tractor.<lb /><lb />Talton said that no signifi-<lb />cant damage has been done to<lb />library material or property.<lb /><lb />He apologized in a statement<lb />for any inconvenience that the<lb />repairs may cause to summer<lb />school students.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />news@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Photo by Deatrice Lockhart<lb /><lb />_ The®house has since cov-<lb />ered the vandalized areas with<lb />plastic.<lb /><lb /> oWe have no plans on get-<lb />ting involved unless a student<lb />organization is involved, ? said<lb />Keith Tingley, assistant direc-<lb />tor of Greek life.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />news@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />SGA] would be rendered ineffectual<lb />by failing to act on this. ?<lb /><lb />Wagoner said there was no way<lb />to know the full scope of the breach.<lb /><lb /> oIt Ts alot bigger problem than any<lb />ofus thought to begin with, ? Wagoner<lb />said. oI have no proof if the faculty<lb />were actually allowed to vote or not. ?<lb />Wagoner Ts chief concern was<lb />that this year Ts election, in any<lb />capacity, would be secure.<lb />"Tam here to have a fair election and I<lb />did everything in my power to make<lb /><lb />see ELECTIONS page A3<lb /><lb />Elections Timeline<lb /><lb />Monday, April 9:<lb /><lb />9 a.m. " 5 p.m. Filing in the<lb />SGA Office for executive<lb />positions and congressional<lb />representatives<lb /><lb />7 p.m. Compulsory meeting<lb />for all filed candidates in<lb />Mendenhall Social Room<lb /><lb />Tuesday, April 10:<lb />9 a.m. " 5 p.m. Polling opens<lb />on Onestop for elections<lb /><lb />6 p.m. Reading of results in<lb />Mendenhall Social Room<lb /><lb />Impeachment proceedings<lb />must wait for congress<lb /><lb />Injunction to remain<lb />in effect until congress<lb />defines a filing date<lb /><lb />SARAH BELL<lb />EDITOR IN CHIEF<lb /><lb />The proceedings to impeach<lb />M. Cole Jones, SGA president,<lb />which began Monday evening,<lb />were put on hold after an injunc-<lb />tion was issued by Nick Genty,<lb />SGA attorney general.<lb /><lb />The injunction was the result<lb />of a request for an interpretation<lb />of the SGA constitution regarding<lb />the filing date for the impeach-<lb />ment process, and what consti-<lb />tutes an impeachable offense.<lb /><lb />The attorney general Ts ruling<lb />extended the injunction filed<lb />Monday against the Rules and<lb />Judiciary Committee, prevent-<lb />ing them from following the<lb />impeachment process until a<lb />point at which legislation can<lb />be passed to protect the rights<lb />of Jones and any elected official<lb />that may face impeachment in<lb />the future.<lb /><lb />The interpretation states<lb />that since othe elected official is<lb />suspended from office (Article<lb />VI, Section V), for the duration<lb />of the impeachment process, it is<lb />critical that the elected official<lb /><lb />be granted a timely notice of the<lb />allegations, and thereby capable<lb />of preparing a reasonable defense<lb />which to present to the Rules and<lb />Judiciary Committee. ?<lb /><lb />Without a defined filing date,<lb />theruling states, there may be insuf-<lb />ficient time for the accused official<lb />to construct a reasonable defense.<lb /><lb />Additionally, the ruling states<lb />that ECU Ts SGA constitution fails<lb />to identify which offenses are<lb />considered impeachable, which<lb /> ocreates the opportunity for indi-<lb />viduals to be held responsible for<lb />minor or frivolous offenses. ?<lb /><lb />Since the constitution does<lb />not define either a filing date<lb />for the impeachment process or<lb />impeachable offenses, the student<lb />congress will need to clarify both<lb />matters before impeachment pro-<lb />ceedings can continue.<lb /><lb />The issue will be presented<lb />to congress at their meeting<lb />Monday at 5 p.m.<lb /><lb />Ashley Yopp, chair of the Rules<lb />and Judiciary Committee, said<lb />she was satisfied with the ruling.<lb /><lb /> oWhile I know it is the<lb />responsibility of the Rules and-<lb />Judiciary Committee to consider<lb />impeachment of elected officials<lb />when articles of impeachment are<lb />brought forth, it is our greater<lb /><lb />see IMPEACH page A3<lb /><lb />Students produce a weekly news broadcast on channel 23 from the production studio in Joyner Library.<lb /><lb />Local television programs<lb />fueled by ECU students<lb /><lb />Students and staff<lb />produce weekly news<lb />cast<lb /><lb />KIMBERLY BELLAMY<lb />SENIOR WRITER<lb /><lb />Channel 23 and channel 31 are<lb />two broadcast outlets at the uni-<lb />versity that faculty and students<lb />produce the programs.<lb /><lb /> oKen Robol, director of stu-<lb />dent engagement, works with all<lb />student media including the East<lb />Carolinian, WZMB, Expressions<lb />magazine and the Rebel and over-<lb />sees channel 31.<lb /><lb />Channel 31 is operated by the<lb />university and uses student fees to<lb />fund it, according to Robol.<lb /><lb />The city of Greenville owns<lb />channel 23 and the broadcasts are<lb />aired by a cable company accord-<lb />ing to Tom McQuaid, member of<lb />the board of directors for channel<lb />23.<lb /><lb /> oIt is a non-profit corporation<lb />carried over by Sudden Link cable<lb />and broadcast on channel 23, ? said<lb />McQuaid.<lb /><lb />Channel 23 was at the uni-<lb />versity in the past, discontinued<lb />operation and was reestablished<lb />later.<lb /><lb /> oThe channel [23] was origi-<lb />nally started at Pitt Community<lb /><lb />College in 1993 and shut down<lb />for a while and was resurrected<lb />back here [at ECU] in 1999, ?<lb />McQuaid said.<lb /><lb />Channel 31 was also estab-<lb />lished in the 1990s and has been<lb />around for a while.<lb /><lb /> oIt Ts been around for over ten<lb />years, ? Robol said.<lb /><lb />A major difference between<lb />channel 23 and 31 is the intended<lb />target audience.<lb /><lb />Channel 23 produces and<lb />broadcasts things that are meant<lb />to provide insight to all the Pitt<lb />County citizens.<lb /><lb /> oChannel 23 is television from<lb />the community, for the commu-<lb />nity, T McQuaid said.<lb /><lb />Channel 31 broadcasts materi-<lb />als to update and inform the stu-<lb />dents, faculty and staff at ECU. ,<lb /><lb />Robol hopes in the future, the<lb />channel will be ostudent focused<lb />with student programs that fea-<lb />ture anything ECU students are<lb />interested in. ?<lb /><lb />The reason for broadcasting<lb />the type of programming that each<lb />channel does, may be due to the<lb />accessibility of the viewers who<lb />see the channels.<lb /><lb />Only citizens that have Sudden<lb /><lb />Link cable have access to channel ;<lb /><lb />23 according to McQuaid.<lb />Programs for channel 31 are<lb />only accessible on campus because it<lb /><lb />is closed circuit, according to Robol.<lb /><lb />While individuals in the com-<lb />munity contribute to producing<lb />material for channel 23, students<lb />are also heavily involved.<lb /><lb />Alison Miller, visiting instruc-<lb />tor in the communication depart-<lb />ment, and David McCarty, pro-<lb />fessor in the communication<lb />department, teach classes that<lb />produce material for newscasts<lb />that air once a week, according to<lb />McQuaid.<lb /><lb /> oOur class does weekly pack-<lb />ages. Matthew Zeimer,<lb />18, of Glendive, Mont., and Spc.<lb />Alan E. McPeek, 20, of Tucson,<lb />Ariz., who were killed in Ramadi, in<lb />western lraq on Feb. 2. The fami-<lb />lies of the two soldiers were initially<lb />told they were killed by enemy fire.<lb /><lb />According to Army Col. Daniel Bag-<lb />gio, unit commanders in Iraq did<lb />not initially suspect they were killed<lb />by U.S. forces, but an investigation<lb />by the unit has found that may be<lb />a possibility.<lb /><lb />A supplemental report filed Feb.<lb />28 suggested that the initial re-<lb />ports might be wrong but that an<lb />investigation was still under way,<lb />he said. It took another month<lb />before the families of the two sol-<lb /><lb />- diers were told, on March 31, that<lb /><lb />friendly fire was suspected.<lb />Wednesday's disclosure comes on<lb />the heels of the announcement last<lb />week that nine high-ranking Army<lb />officers, including four generals,<lb />made critical errors in reporting the<lb />friendly fire death of Army Ranger<lb />Pat Tillman in Afghanistan. <lb />Opinion _<lb /><lb />Laughter<lb /><lb />silenced on<lb /><lb />SNL<lb /><lb />Saturday Night Live is circling the<lb />drain<lb /><lb />JONATHAN GARDNER<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Ww<lb />Saturday Night Live used to be the highlight of 3<lb /><lb />any weekend. With a great cast, SNL would spend<lb />an hour every Saturday entertaining the millions<lb />of viewers that turned to NBC. The show would be<lb />graced with celebrities, music stars and actors. It<lb />would be hailed for its parodies of politicians, tele-<lb />vision shows and movies. So when I searched on<lb />YouTube for the SNL parody of 300, I was disgusted<lb />at the results.<lb /><lb />The skit consisted entirely of the same joke, over<lb />and over again. Peyton Manning, as a beast sent to<lb />crush the Spartan army with boulders, would con-<lb />stantly miss his cue to othrow the rock ? on the cower-<lb />ing Spartan warrior. The director would eventually<lb />get so flustered that he would remove the scene from<lb />the movie completely. The scene was so bad, even the<lb />live audience couldn't find something to laugh at. By<lb />the end of the skit, I felt sick to stomach to see SNL<lb />fall so far, so fast.<lb /><lb />Starting in 1975, SNL has consistently had ee<lb />actors, creating memorable characters. Chevy Chase<lb />started the show, followed by Bill Murray. Eddie<lb />Murphy and Dana Carvey carried the show until it<lb />reached its peak. With actors like Chris Farley, Adam<lb />Sandler, Mike Myers and Kevin Nealon, notable<lb />characters would flood out of SNL. Along with the<lb />chemistry between Sandler and Farley, Myers and<lb />Carvey would work together to create Wayne and<lb />Garth in their oWayne Ts World ? sketch. It truly was<lb />the high point for SNL, and the momentum from this<lb />era would be carried for years to follow.<lb /><lb />However, the show would steadily start to decline<lb />in the 2003 " 2004 season. The departure of popular<lb />actors like Will Ferrell, Chris Kattan and Tracy<lb />Morgan would cause many of the viewers to leave as<lb />well. The fact that SNL replaced these actors with<lb />less-than-desirable actors only caused the slump to<lb />heighten. Currently, SNL has lost a large amount of<lb />viewers compared to earlier, and the cast has reduced<lb />to a small 11 cast members, with the only recogniz-<lb />able actor being Kenan Thompson.<lb /><lb />So, what caused this decline? Some blame new<lb />writers, others blame Lorne Michaels, and some<lb />claim that SNL hasn't lost its touch and that nos-<lb />talgia has just blinded the show to what it actually<lb />was. But in the end, the facts don Tt lie. The actors are<lb />breaking their characters too often now, the techni-<lb />cal aspects are showing up on screen, and lines are<lb />being read awkwardly or missed completely. Massive<lb />budget cuts can only mean a declining viewership<lb />and ultimately a downward spiral for Saturday<lb />Night Live.<lb /><lb />Big deal, it Ts<lb /><lb />Banner<lb /><lb />A look into the big fuss over Banner<lb /><lb />ALEX LAROCCA<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />I will always remember Opal, our past register-<lb />ing program. I will always remember it because ever<lb />since I arrived here at ECU it never worked and I<lb />have always been forced to go to my advisor. I have<lb />wondered for so long T why Opal never worked and<lb />why the school couldn't fix such a seemingly easy<lb />problem.<lb /><lb />For years we have been riddled with this problem<lb />but over the past several months, a question was<lb />forming: oWhat is Banner? ?<lb /><lb />Posters were put all over the school with stu-<lb />dents walking by them, staring blankly, wondering<lb />how a girl in the library with notes all over her had<lb />something to do with that guy eating pancakes and<lb />mustard. Slowly, though, word spread from person<lb />to person that Banner was to be our new, and thor-<lb />oughly improved, registering program.<lb /><lb />Hurray, one of the easiest and most basic prob-<lb />lems at our school has been sorted out. Let the<lb />celebration of Banner begin!<lb /><lb />I never thought it too much to ask for a simple<lb />way to register for classes and I don Tt see how it is so<lb />difficult to solve such a problem. It really just seems<lb />lazy and inconsiderate that we students were forced<lb />to use a program that is as reliable as a house on a<lb />sinkhole. Numerous times, Opal screwed me out of<lb />classes or tricked me into thinking, oHey it finally<lb />worked. ? Why was this necessary?<lb /><lb />Well, in order to make up for this, the adminis-<lb />tration apparently decided to throw a big fuss over<lb />Banner. This past week, and for some the week<lb />before, we have all been honored with using the<lb />all-working and all-glorious Banner program. The<lb /><lb />papers advertised, posters stayed up, OneStop added .<lb /><lb />it and orientations were offered to explain it. And by<lb />now we have all either decided going to our advisor<lb />is easier or Banner blew our minds.<lb /><lb />Is it too crazy to ask why all the mystery? Why<lb />all the advertisements and even a oBanner Day ?<lb />where one could eat pancakes with mustard? I was<lb />honestly embarrassed over how much our school<lb />cared about Banner; a registering program. Wouldn't<lb />it have been a little easier, less expensive and less of a<lb />hassle to just send out constant informative e-mails<lb />or perhaps just put up informative posters?<lb /><lb />I realize it wasn Tt that much money, but seriously,<lb />why was there a poster with a guy eating pancakes<lb />with mustard? What would have been the harm with<lb />a poster half the size saying oBanner is...? ?<lb /><lb />I am so glad Opal is dead and:am quite pleased<lb />with Banner as a replacement, so kudos to our school<lb />for making registration possible. I am just at a loss<lb />of words when I think about the mystery of Banner<lb />and how for months the school kept us from knowing<lb />such a simple and stupid fact.<lb /><lb />{ It Ts contagious! }<lb /><lb />THURSDAY APRIL5, 2007<lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />Thanks Pirate Rants, | think<lb />subconsciously you influenced my<lb />decision to step up and ask my<lb />favorite girl out!<lb /><lb />PAGE A4.<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />POLITICAL. One such<lb />thing is the racism and discrimination shown by<lb />some bouncers at certain clubs. I have heard that<lb />bouncers will discriminate not only by race, but also<lb />those entering with military identification cards.<lb /><lb />_As a Caucasian female, I have had little to no<lb />personal experience with racism or other discrimina-<lb />tion. I have also never seen it firsthand downtown,<lb />yet I continue to hear stories from my friends and<lb />others about their experiences. .<lb /><lb />One story hit particularly close to home. A close<lb />friend of mine is a regular visitor of downtown<lb />Greenville on the weekends. He even has a particular<lb />club that he attends most often. He enjoys this club<lb />because he is close friends with one of the bartenders<lb />and is friends with many people that work there.<lb /><lb />However, he called me one morning, not long<lb />ago, to tell me his astonishing experience the night<lb />before. As with most Saturday nights, he planned to<lb />visit his regular club with two of his friends. One of<lb />these friends is African American.<lb /><lb />It was early in the night and there was no line<lb /><lb />at the door. My friend recognized the guy checking<lb />licenses and went to the door, handed the bouncer<lb />his ID, and waited to be let in. The bouncer looked<lb />at my friend, looked at his friend, and then gave the<lb />license back to my friend. He proceeded to tell the<lb />three guys that they needed memberships to enter.<lb /><lb />I have heard of clubs using this method to pre-<lb />vent entrance among other reasons. Sometimes, if<lb />the club-goers are not wearing appropriate clothing,<lb />the bouncers have the right to refuse entrance. That<lb />said, my friends were wearing button-down, collared<lb />shirts and dress shoes.<lb /><lb />Also, I have heard of bouncers refusing admis-<lb />sion if the club is starting to fill to capacity. But, like I<lb />said, it was early in the evening and there was no line.<lb /><lb />I can only draw one conclusion from this story.<lb />This bouncer was exhibiting some degree of racism.<lb /><lb />Why else would he refuse a loyal patron like my T<lb /><lb />friend? My friend consistently spends money every<lb />Friday and Saturday night in this club. The bouncer Ts<lb />job should be to bring in business, not to deter cus-<lb />tomers because of race or any one unreasonable<lb />discriminatory method.<lb /><lb />My friend has not gone to this club since the<lb />incident, and I hope that this club changes its policy<lb />of entrance. I did not realize the degree to which<lb />racism was being exercised until this happened. It<lb />is a true shame and disgrace.<lb /><lb />To the Editor,<lb /><lb />I am a member of the legislative branch of the<lb />SGA where I proudly represent the Anthropology<lb />Student Organization. This is not an easy job, but I<lb />try my best to be responsive to my constituents. In<lb />fact, I care about what goes on at ECU. I also care<lb />about how events on campus affect the members of<lb />the organization that I represent.<lb /><lb />I know there is a lot of frustration on campus<lb />regarding our student government. I have to admit<lb />that I am usually one of the first to get frustrated,<lb />and I am a representative. Rersonally, I think that<lb />many of the rules regarding the funding of campus<lb />organizations are cumbersome and unfair, especially<lb />in the area of travel expenses. I am also very disap-<lb />pointed and upset with many recent issues that-have<lb />arisen in the SGA. Yet, when I sit down and think<lb />of it, 1 am glad we have a student government on<lb />this campus.<lb /><lb />Yes, there are problems in the SGA. We are not<lb />perfect, but the majority of us are there to serve the<lb />students. Folks, the SGA has done some really good<lb />things. We try to improve the standard of living on<lb />campus. We also strive to represent and look out for<lb />those who live off campus.<lb /><lb />I agree; work needs to be. done, things need to be<lb />improved and problems need to be corrected. How-<lb />ever, just think about how things would be if there<lb />wasn Tt any student representation at ECU, at least<lb />we have some voice. The students make the SGA. It<lb />is a government for the students, of the students and<lb />by the students.<lb /><lb />Those of us who serve give up our time so that<lb /><lb />we can provide some sort of student voice. Usually<lb /><lb />- all we get as thanks for our service is a T-shirt, a<lb /><lb />free sandwich and nasty comments for raising all of<lb />our student fees.<lb /> o| implore you T all to consider what I have said<lb /><lb />when you are criticizing the SGA as a whole.<lb /><lb />Sincerely,<lb />Richard A. A seemingly pic-<lb /><lb />ture-perfect family is ripped apart<lb /><lb />when Dr. David Henry, the husband<lb />and father of the tale, takes fate<lb />into his own hands and completely<lb />turns their world upside down.<lb />When Kim Edwards T novel<lb />The Memory Keeper's Daughter first<lb />opens, the reader is taken back<lb />to a winter storm in Louisville,<lb />Kentucky in 1964. David, a suc-<lb />cessful orthopedic surgeon, has to<lb />deliver his wife Ts baby when they<lb />can't make it to the hospital over<lb />treacherous roads. Come to find<lb />out, the heavily sedated woman,<lb />Norah Henry, is actually pregnant<lb />with twins. The first baby is a<lb />beautiful baby whom the mother<lb />has already given :the name Paul.<lb />Upon delivery of the second baby,<lb />Phoebe, David realizes she has<lb />Down syndrome and makes a deci-<lb />sion that will completely obliterate<lb />life as he knows it. <lb /><lb />As the<lb />mother is<lb />passed out<lb />from fatigue<lb />and medica-<lb />tion, David<lb />instructs his<lb />nurse to take<lb />the inflicted<lb />Phoebe to an<lb />institution<lb />without con-<lb />sulting his<lb />wife. As a result, Caroline<lb />becomes self-destructive over the<lb />child and marriage that she has<lb />lost. Paul, of course, suffers when<lb />his father is never around and his<lb />mother is too consumed with the<lb /><lb />issues that are weighing her down.<lb /><lb />The story is told through the<lb />eyes of all three characters over the<lb />course of twenty-five years. The guy who wrote the songs<lb />may be doing nicely years after the group stops<lb />playing, but the other musicians aren Tt earning a<lb />dime unless they play.<lb /><lb />2) They want the attention: Face it, after a certain<lb /><lb />point the stars can Tt be doing it just for the money.<lb />How many Brazilian models can Mick Jagger buy?<lb />A more compelling motivation is the heightened love<lb />and admiration they get from playing their proven<lb />hits for fans who've pined for eons to hear them from<lb />the original guys.<lb /><lb />3) The leader ran out of ideas for his solo career:<lb />Prime example: Sting. The guy Ts latest album<lb />consists entirely of 16th-century lute music. It<lb />doesn Tt get much lower on the obscurity scale than<lb />that. As a chaser, who wouldn Tt want to bring back<lb />something you know bazillions of people will wor-<lb />ship you for?<lb /><lb />4) This is the members T last shot to get back on<lb />the cover of Rolling Stone before they look too hor-<lb />rible for even the airbrushers to cover up: A subset<lb />of the owanting attention ? category, this has to do<lb />with pure vanity.<lb /><lb />5) The members want to make aniends for their<lb />past: The stars forging these reunions are at least a<lb />decade _ if not two or three _ older than they were<lb />when they made the (sometimes) rash decision to<lb />pack it in. Who hasn Tt mellowed in all that time?<lb />And who wants the bad karma of continuing to hold a<lb />grudge against someone with whom you once shared<lb />something so dear?<lb /><lb />6) They pine to play the bigger halls they can Tt fill<lb />on their own: Even stars as huge as Sting and Phil<lb />Collins could never play stadiums as a solo act. But<lb />with their old bands, they can. That not only trans-<lb />lates into a sky-high payday (as lofty as $100 million<lb />for some) but lets them bask in that rare sound of<lb />50,000 people'shouting their songs at once.<lb /><lb />7) They want their youth back: The closest they<lb />can get is by reconnecting with the colleagues,<lb />and songs, that came from the fever of youth. Of<lb />course, that Ts the covert dream, and key motivation,<lb />of the fans, too.<lb /><lb />OOPS! continued from A5<lb /><lb />performance produced by The<lb />Greenville Theatre Project.<lb /><lb /> oWe moved to Greenville from<lb />Orlando [Florida] last year. We<lb />realized there is no community<lb />theatre except for what is at ECU.<lb />When you put ona production, it<lb />is very expensive but with improv<lb />you just make it up as you go<lb />along. Adam Scott, Luke<lb /><lb />Mickelson has placed in the top 10 at the Masters every year since 1999.<lb /><lb />Donald and Sergio Garcia could<lb />also challenge, but when it matters<lb />most, as it does this week, would<lb />anyone be willing to choose the<lb />field over Tiger?
