NEWS EDITOR<lb /><lb />Once forerunner in peer-to-<lb />peer file sharing, Napster was<lb />shut down by the Recording<lb />Industry Association of America<lb />in 2001. Despite Napster Ts mis-<lb />fortune, hundreds of other P2P<lb />networks emerged within the<lb />online world. From there, it was<lb />no longer feasible for the RIAA<lb />to sue each company, so they<lb />began to file lawsuits against<lb />individual downloaders instead.<lb /><lb />Despite the RIAA Ts best<lb />efforts to halt file-sharing, it still<lb />continues to grow.<lb /><lb />In their endless quest to<lb />counteract illegal downloads,<lb />last month the RIAA announced<lb />a new anti-piracy initiative,<lb />which targets students on college<lb />campuses.<lb /><lb />This new plan implements a<lb /> opre-litigation letter, ? where they<lb />will send letters to colleges and<lb />universities and ask that they for-<lb />ward the letter on to students.<lb /><lb />Instead of threatening a<lb />lawsuit right away, the RIAA is<lb />now giving students 20 days to<lb />settle at a odiscount, ? instead of<lb />going to court where the fees<lb />generally range from $3,000<lb /> " $5,000.<lb /><lb /> oThis is initiating legal<lb />action against individuals who<lb />engage in illegal file sharing<lb />of copyrighted materials using<lb />peer-to-peer systems. Roughly<lb />400 of these actions will be taken<lb />against college students, ? said<lb />David Ward, president of the<lb />American Council of Education.<lb /><lb />- To help deter students from<lb />illegal downloading, ECU offers<lb />students an alternative with the<lb />Ruckus music downloader.<lb /><lb />Ruckus isa program that<lb />targets the college market and<lb />serves the needs of students by<lb /><lb />Photo by Erica Chan<lb /><lb />making available music to down-<lb />load in a legal manner.<lb /><lb /> oRuckus is offered to every<lb />ECU student for free, there are<lb />some charges for additional<lb />services like downloading music<lb />to an MP3 player or purchasing<lb />music, ? said Aaron Lucier, direc-<lb />tor of operations and associate<lb />director of campus living.<lb /><lb />Although Ruckus has been<lb />available for a year at ECU,<lb />many students still don Tt know<lb /><lb />about it.<lb /><lb /> oI did a search online [for<lb />music downloading] and I found<lb />it there. I didn Tt hear about it<lb />from ECU though, ? said Michael<lb />Nemesi, freshman Garrett Hall<lb />resident. oI don Tt use Ruckus as<lb />much this semester though. I<lb />mostly use iTunes now. ?<lb /><lb />For some students the ben-<lb />efits of downloading illegally<lb />still outweigh steep RIAA con-<lb />sequences.<lb /><lb />Other senators asked to oppose OLF<lb /><lb />Easley asks senators<lb />from outside N.C. to.<lb />oppose landing field<lb /><lb />(AP) "Gov. Elizabeth Dole and<lb />Richard Burr have yet to agree<lb />to do the same, Easley said he Ts<lb />talked to senators from Dela-<lb /><lb />ware, Maryland and Virginia<lb />about applying pressure on the<lb />Navy to discuss an alternative.<lb /><lb />Environmentalists believe the<lb />Navy has ignored the dangers of<lb />putting jet aircraft in the same air-<lb />space as the thousands of waterfowl<lb />that spend the winter at nearby<lb />Pocosin Lakes Wildlife Refuge.<lb />Many of those birds come from<lb />states north of North Carolina.<lb /><lb /> oTm not getting any help out<lb />of our senators yet, but I have<lb />been talking to other senators ...<lb />because their ducks come down<lb />here too, ? Easley said. oEvery-<lb />body has a stake in the outcome.<lb />I think now that we have some<lb />people up there in the Senate that<lb />I know from those states, we'll be<lb />able to get a coalition that will<lb />make them sit down and be alittle<lb />more reasonable. ?<lb /><lb />Easley didn Tt say which<lb />senators are willing to help.<lb />An Easley spokeswoman<lb />didn Tt immediately respond to<lb /><lb />an e-mail requesting details.<lb /><lb />Easley, a Democrat, has taken<lb />a more active role opposing the<lb />project since the Navy said in<lb />February its environmental study<lb />concluded the site near the refuge<lb />was the best place for the landin<lb />strip. s<lb /><lb />Pilots flying F/A-18 Super<lb />Hornet jet fighters based in Vir-<lb />ginia and North Carolina would<lb />use the strip to practice night<lb />aircraft carrier landings.<lb /><lb />Easley said he was upset with<lb />the Navy for what he called its<lb />failure to listen to the growing<lb />number of voices opposed to the site.<lb /><lb /> oI don Tt believe the United<lb />States Congress is going to sit<lb />by and let them destroy an entire<lb />Atlantic flyaway refuge, ? <p>Ion,<lb /><lb />Democratic<lb />disappointment<lb /><lb />JUSTIN SUMMERS<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />On March 23, the Democrats in the House of<lb />Representatives passed the oU.S. Troop Readiness,<lb />Veterans T Health and Iraq Accountability Act. ?<lb />This act passed by a very narrow margin and will<lb />essentially give the Bush Administration another<lb />100 billion dollars to do what they see fit to owin<lb />the War on Terror. ? Many people are saying that the<lb />passing of this bill was a victory for Nancy Pelosi and<lb />the Democrats because it is setting a timetable for<lb />Iraq, something the president has urged he will not<lb />do. While this act does set a'deadline to end the war,<lb />Sept.1, 2008, it is hardly an effective step in ending<lb />the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.<lb /><lb />This Bill issued was a choice between two nega-<lb />tive outcomes, in my opinion. The first option was to<lb />vote with Bush and continue the occupation of Iraq<lb />far into the future with no set date for the withdrawal<lb />of our troops. The second option was to vote with<lb />the Democrats and to withdraw the troops in 2008<lb />assuming certain benchmarks of success are met<lb />while providing billions of dollars for war-spending<lb />in the mean time. So essentially, this vote was not<lb />a victory for those who want to end the war, but a<lb />superficial victory for Nancy Pelosi.and others who<lb />like to say they are going to bring the troops home<lb />while doing nothing to cut the funding to the war.<lb />Howard Zinn, a great historian and anti-war activist,<lb />compared the situation we are in now to a situation<lb />in Civil War America. In reference to setting time-<lb />tables, Zinn asked if obefore the Civil War, abolition-<lb />ists would have agreed to postpone the emancipation<lb />of the slaves for a year, or two years, or five years,<lb />and couple this with an appropriation of funds to<lb />enforce the Fugitive Slave Act. ? No, they wouldn Tt<lb />have because they knew that slavery was morally<lb />and logically wrong and it had to be stopped as soon<lb />as possible, just as the war in Iraq should be ended.<lb /><lb />In reference to logic behind troop withdrawal,<lb />Zinn added, oIf our troops are preventing civil war,<lb />helping people, controlling violence, then why with-<lb />draw at all? If they are in fact doing the opposite<lb /> "provoking civil war, hurting people, perpetuating<lb />violence "they should withdraw as quickly as ships<lb />and planes can carry them home. ? The overall senti-<lb />ment in Washington is to withdraw the troops, so<lb />why wait on superficial deadlines and benchmarks<lb />of osuccess? ?<lb /><lb />The oU.S. Troop Readiness, Veterans T Health<lb />and Iraq Accountability Act ? is just one of many<lb />disappointments for the millions: of people like me<lb />who elected the democrats in November. I voted<lb />Democrat to protest the Bush Administration Ts<lb />failing occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan, and as<lb />a democrat, I feel betrayed by my elected officials.<lb />It Ts hard to believe there is no one out there willing<lb />to put an immediate end to the war by cutting off<lb />funding for the war and using the money that is<lb />already in motion to bring home our soldiers. Our<lb />politicians may never come to the realization that<lb />more fighting is not the answer, so for now all we<lb />can do is mobilize and inform the only people who<lb />can convince them, ourselves. 5<lb /><lb />From role<lb />model to rags<lb />Taking the idol worshipping too far<lb /><lb />JONATHAN GARDNER<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Everyone had a role model growing up. Every-<lb />one had someone who they looked up to, someone<lb />that could do no wrong. Many times, it would be a<lb />relative, a coach or some other positive role model.<lb />However, being the generation raised on television, it<lb />would occasionally be someone put into the spotlight,<lb />whether it was an actor, an athlete or some other<lb />kind of celebrity. And while they looked glamor-<lb />ous in the spotlight of the media, once the light<lb />faded, these role models showed their true colors.<lb /><lb />Starting her career toward the end of 1998,<lb />Britney Spears was the hot thing for a while. Her<lb />hits like o...Baby One More Time ? and oOops!... I<lb />Did It Again, ? were on the radio, and more impor-<lb />tantly, on the lips of every little girl around the<lb />country. Spears was-used to promote big names,<lb />like Pepsi, and had her own series of toys. Yet<lb />look at her now. She was married twice, she is<lb />in and out of rehab, and she shaved her head for<lb />no apparent reason. Right now, she is making<lb />Kevin Federline look like the responsible parent.<lb /><lb />Considered by some to be the greatest running<lb />back of all time, and inducted into the Pro Football<lb />Hall of Fame in 1985, OJ Simpson was the top of<lb />the sports world. He was the first player to rush for<lb />over 2,000 yards in a season, and he reached the Pro<lb /><lb />~ Bowl six times. After retiring from football, Simpson<lb />moved onto his acting career, gaining parts in The<lb />Towering Inferno and. The Naked Gun trilogy. The<lb />Villain for The Terminator was to go to Simpson, but<lb />was decided otherwise, because audience might not<lb />accept him as a villain, due to his onice guy ? image.<lb />Of course, what Simpson became famous for has<lb />nothing to do with his football career, or his acting<lb />career. In a controversial decision, OJ Simpson was<lb />found not guilty of murdering his wife and her friend.<lb /><lb />Once considered one of the most successful<lb />and most powerful actors in Hollywood, his recent<lb />religious views have dropped Tom Cruise from the<lb />spotlight. He was the star of Top Gun and Days of<lb />Thunder as well other successful movies like Cock-<lb />tail and Jerry Maguire. Yet, by 2003, Cruise was the<lb />joke of Hollywood. His preaching T of the teachings<lb />of Scientology and his claims that psychiatry ois a<lb />Nazi science ? has quickly dropped his influence in<lb />the world of Hollywood. The oSouth Park ? episode<lb /> oTrapped in the Closet ? poked fun at Cruise Ts Scien-<lb />tology beliefs and implied Cruise was homosexual.<lb /><lb />All of these celebrities were role models to<lb />someone, and yet look at them now. Just because<lb />they're famous doesn Tt mean they're superhuman.<lb />Why were these people role models when more<lb />obvious candidates could have been found closer<lb />to home? Take notice of the teachers, the coaches,<lb />the officers and the firefighters. They all work<lb />hard and receive next to no credit for their work.<lb /><lb />{ It Ts Rant-a-licious }<lb /><lb />WEDNESDAY APRIL 4, 2007<lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />Yes, | am.walking down the street and<lb />singing loudly, and no, | don Tt care if you<lb />think I Tm nuts.<lb /><lb />pace A3<lb /><lb />| o-<lb /><lb />PUTTING THINGS ine PERSPECTIVE<lb /><lb />The East Carolinian does not endorse statements made in Pirate Rants. ECU has<lb />recently had quite the show of feelings on the subject<lb />with an affirmative action bake sale by the ECU<lb />College Republicans and the subsequent protest by<lb />the Black Student Union on Friday.<lb /><lb />How our society has deemed affirmative action a<lb />tool for equality is beyond me. The media constantly<lb />tells us that it promotes fairness, justness and equal-<lb />ity. This is a blatant lie. How is a process that favors<lb />one race over another ever considered fair?<lb /><lb />The United States is an amazing country full of<lb />opportunities for everyone. We have more chances<lb />to get it right than anyone does anywhere else in the<lb />world. Simply being born in the U.S. is a tremendous<lb />advantage for anyone.<lb /><lb />more than others? Why have we decided that it is<lb />more important that we have.a racially balanced<lb />group of employees than a group that is qualified?<lb />Why must I hire a proportional number of minority<lb />employees when there are more qualified applicants?<lb />Is that not racism? Favoring one race above another<lb />simply because of the color of their skin? Isn't that<lb />what we have tried to eliminate in society for the<lb />past 50 years?<lb /><lb />Giving one person, a job over another because<lb /><lb />of their race is as absurd as selling cookies for dif-<lb />ferent prices based on race. I would think that the<lb />Black Student Union would be offended by the idea<lb />that they needed extra attention and favoritism<lb />from employers. Surely, that organization must<lb />think that everyone truly is equal. If so, let Ts let our<lb />merits and accomplishments determine where we go<lb />in life. Better yet, let Ts live in a world where we are<lb />judged by the content of our character and not the<lb />color of our skin.<lb /><lb />MCT<lb /><lb />Dear Editor,<lb /><lb />I wonder if it is possible that the right official<lb />at ECU have never thought about retirees beyond<lb />faculty retirees from that institution. It is as though after I received<lb />the gold watch and the silver platter, I got a polite<lb />shove out of the university door.<lb /><lb />First, there was the free parking permit (call<lb />it what you like, Emeritus or not) which was later<lb />revoked as having been a mistake. I believe the only<lb />staff retirees who even requested such a reward for<lb />loyal service are those like myself who wanted to<lb />contribute to the university and make use of some of<lb />it Ts services at the same time. For example, I attended<lb />most of the performances by the school of music on a<lb />regular basis. I was a session ticket holder for years<lb />to the Alexander series. I still attend as many of the<lb />events of my former department as possible. When<lb />I do visit the campus, I must find a parking meter<lb />to feed while I am parked:there and keep returning<lb />to the meter to continue feeding it. Some would<lb />consider it a disgrace or at least very rude to treat<lb />any retiree this way. I wrote the ECU traffic office<lb />a letter expressing these concerns after the revoca-<lb />tion of my parking permit. I did not receive even the<lb />courtesy of a reply.<lb /><lb />Now we are about to celebrate the centennial of<lb />the institution that I spent over 30 years working<lb />for, growing up around and even attending classes<lb />in. I also worked for more than a year as Staff SGA<lb />Photographer. None of this, even got me an invita-<lb />tion to the centennial events. I had to call and ask<lb />to be invited. I was told by another staff person on<lb />the phone that owe only sent out notices to faculty<lb />members. ? One might. understand the feeling that<lb />some of the retired staff feel that our loyalty, our<lb />service and our time is deemed less valuable by the<lb />university because we are former faculty. I know<lb />many faculty members who also view this oversight<lb />as a disgrace. I love the university as much as anyone<lb />and I am proud of my small part of the schools his-<lb />tory. Some of that history lives in the photographs<lb />that I took in the 1960s which may reside today in<lb />the university archives as well as the East Carolinian<lb />and the 1967 Buccaneer of then East Carolina College,<lb />Just to name two of the student media. Some of it lives<lb />in the expressions of gratitude I still get from my<lb />former colleagues for a job they say was well done. I<lb />guess after all is said and done, that is good enough<lb />for me. It should not however, be good enough for<lb />ECU and for the state of North Carolina. :<lb /><lb />L. The<lb />question is how to handle them.<lb /><lb />Common sources of conflict<lb />include a blurred definition of<lb />responsibility, a limited amount of<lb />resources and conflict of interest.<lb /><lb />Responsibilities amongst co-<lb />workers only arise as a prob-<lb />lem when there are many people<lb />employed to perform the same<lb />task. Therefore, projects that<lb />involve the participation of numer-<lb />ous parties can fall between the<lb />cracks with everyone relying<lb />on someone else to complete<lb />the work at hand. There Ts only one<lb />problem: Almost nobody knows<lb />how far that is.<lb /><lb />Do you burn 200 steps putter-<lb />ing around your dorm or apart-<lb />ment.in the morning before school<lb />and/or work or a thousand? Does<lb />a walk around a city block knock<lb />off 5 percent of your daily goal or<lb />less than 1? Sure, you.can guess<lb />or try to count all your steps.<lb />But that Ts inaccurate at best and<lb />annoying to say the least.<lb /><lb />Recently, in the name of good<lb />health, we bought a pedometer<lb />and measured various daily activi-<lb />ties step by step. Walking the<lb />dog around the block? Going to<lb />the grocery store? Two hours of<lb />clothes shopping at a local mall?<lb /><lb />We know how many steps it<lb />takes.<lb /><lb />But we didn Tt stop there. Just<lb />for fun we set out to find how far<lb />we'd go if we walked 10,000 steps<lb />all at once.<lb /><lb />The answer: much farther than<lb />we thought. You don Tt have to do<lb />it all at once. Remember, every<lb />step counts.<lb /><lb />But why even bother trying to<lb />get 10,000 steps per day?<lb /><lb />Two words: your health. And,<lb />yes, Just by walking, you can make<lb />significant gains.<lb /><lb /> oI think 10,000 steps should<lb />be everybody Ts daily goal, ? said<lb />Kristie Harbaugh, owner of Twin<lb /><lb />Fitness in Overland Park, Kan. oI "<lb /><lb />tell my clients to buy a (pedom-<lb />eter) and see how many steps they<lb />get, ? she said. oMost people only<lb />get about half that. ?<lb /><lb />The idea of walking 10,000<lb />steps per day is enjoying a renais-<lb />sance in the United States. It<lb />originated in the 1970s with Japa-<lb />nese researcher Yoshiro Hatano,<lb />who advocated walking to. help<lb />slim down his increasingly obese<lb />country.<lb /><lb />Today walking has gained<lb />popularity for many reasons. It Ts<lb />easy, there Ts no equipment to buy<lb />and, unlike jogging or other high-<lb />impact exercises, there Ts virtually<lb />no risk of injury.<lb /><lb />And talk about health ben-<lb />efits. A University of Tennessee<lb />study published in the journal<lb />Medicine and Science in Sports<lb />and Exercise revealed women who<lb />averaged more than 10,000 steps<lb />per day had 40 percent less body<lb />fat and waist and hip measure-<lb />ments that were more than eight<lb />inches narrower than those who<lb />averaged fewer than 6,000 steps.<lb /><lb />Then there Ts the Amish.<lb />Researchers measured the daily<lb />steps of 98 Amish adults and<lb />found that men took an average<lb />of 18,425 steps and women took<lb />14,196. Compare that with about<lb />4,000 steps for the average Ameri-<lb />can adult (other studies put this<lb />number at less than 3,000), and it<lb />is easy to see why only 4 percent of<lb />Amish adults are considered obese<lb />compared with 31 percent of the<lb />general population.<lb /><lb />But you don Tt need to walk<lb />long to see benefits. In an eight-<lb /><lb /> year study involving 6,000 women,<lb /><lb />researchers at the University of<lb />California at San Francisco found<lb />that even a little extra walk-<lb />ing can help you hold onto the<lb />neurons you have. High-energy<lb />walkers, the study found, held the<lb />line on cognitive decline far better<lb />than the more sedentary subjects.<lb /><lb />By all accounts, your brain<lb /><lb /> loves to walk. Walking increases<lb /><lb />blood circulation, and because it Ts<lb />not particularly strenuous, your<lb />leg muscles don Tt hog all the extra<lb />oxygen and glucose it produces.<lb />As you walk, you're oxygenating<lb /><lb />your brain. It Ts good for the rest<lb />of your body, too.<lb /><lb /> It increases your breath-<lb />ing, your heart rate and your<lb />lung capacity while shaping and<lb />toning your muscles. What Ts<lb />more, numerous studies of senior<lb />citizens who walk regularly<lb />showed significant improve-<lb />ment in memory skills compared<lb />with non-walkers. Walking also<lb />improved their learning ability,<lb />concentration and abstract rea-<lb />soning. Additionally, one study<lb />noted, stroke risk was cut by 57<lb />percent in people who walked as<lb />little as 20 minutes per day.<lb /><lb />Dixie Thompson, director<lb />for the Center for Physical Activ-<lb />ity and Health at the University<lb />of Tennessee, said that because<lb />extra walking lowers blood pres-<lb />sure and helps the body process<lb />glucose, it also can dramatically<lb />reduce your risk for heart disease<lb />and Type 2 diabetes. Of course<lb />slow walking isn Tt as good as fast<lb />walking, Thompson said, but<lb />it beats inactivity and still has<lb />health benefits.<lb /><lb />There are even social and<lb />family-bonding benefits.<lb /><lb /> oPeople can walk in groups of<lb />two or three, ? said Harbaugh of<lb />Twin Fitness. oThe time passes<lb />very fast. That Ts key, because<lb />people often become bored with<lb />their workout. If we can make it<lb />more fun, people will work out<lb />more. And I encourage families<lb />to go on walks right after dinner<lb />twice around the block and take<lb />their dog with them. If children<lb />see their mom or dad walking,<lb />that Ts going to encourage them<lb />to become active, too. ?<lb /><lb />Bottom line?<lb /><lb />There Ts nothing to lose by<lb />aiming for 10,000 steps per day.<lb />Look at it this way, experts say:<lb />Even if you reach only 8,000 steps,<lb />you've still doubled your amount<lb />of daily walking. And that will<lb />still pay big benefits.<lb /><lb />Now get out there and start<lb />walking.<lb /><lb />TRIPPS continued from A4<lb /><lb />reasonably priced and tasty meal<lb />choices: Nevertheless, after much<lb />difficult and prolonged debating<lb />to find the perfect meal, I had to<lb />make a choice as to. not hold up<lb />the entire group.<lb /><lb />After. placing my order. for<lb />chicken fettuccine alfredo, I<lb />resumed my review of the res-<lb />taurant. The salad was<lb />devoid of any dressing or sem-<lb />blance of taste. Luckily, in line<lb />with the quick pacing of the res-<lb />taurant, my meal came shortly<lb /><lb />after receiving the salad. I Tve<lb />had chicken fettuccine alfredo<lb />from nearly every restaurant in<lb />Greenville and without a doubt<lb />Tripp Ts alfredo was among the<lb />best. My party seemed to concur<lb />with my admiration for the cuisine.<lb />Around the restaurant I also<lb />noticed many of the patrons<lb />shared my sentiments of the<lb />foods quality as well. Overall,<lb />Tripp Ts proved to be the best addi-<lb />tion to Greenville dining since<lb />Olive Garden. The food, with<lb />the exception of the salad, prices<lb />and service were exquisite and the<lb />atmosphere was one the highest<lb />quality. Tripp Ts deserves multiple<lb />visits, as the customer will want<lb />to try every meal on the menu.<lb /><lb />Overall Grade: A<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />pulse@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />WORKPLACE continued from A4<lb /><lb />sonalities and work ethics of<lb />co-workers. For instance, when a<lb />team of managers has been given<lb />the opportunity to propose a<lb />change and only one member of<lb />the team is concerned with the<lb />team while the rest are out for<lb />their individual advancements,<lb />the project will be tainted. with<lb />turmoil. If these individualists<lb />outnumber the team players, it<lb />can cause major problems:<lb />Within groups, it is neces-<lb />sary to establish common goals<lb />amongst team members before<lb />moving forward with a single<lb />task. In addition, it is important to<lb />recognize that everyone benefits<lb />from a job well done, and that a<lb />complete job requires team input.<lb />Although these three prob-<lb />lems occur in the workplace,<lb />it always seems that cliques<lb />amongst workers are the greatest<lb />barriers. Cliques evolve primarily<lb />out of common bonds and can<lb />include those with tenure, dif-<lb />ferent professions and economic<lb />or social differences.
