<lb />Opinion _<lb /><lb />Shut it down<lb /><lb />Guantanamo base still a sword in<lb />the side of democracy<lb /><lb />JUSTIN SUMMERS<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />In the history of offences and injustices commit-<lb />ted by the U.S. Government, none stands out greater<lb />in my mind than the gleaming symbol of injustice<lb />that is Guantanamo Bay Naval Base.<lb /><lb />Guantanamo Bay Naval Base and Detention<lb />Center takes up roughly 45 square miles of the south<lb />eastern region of Cuba. The U.S. has maintained<lb />a naval base there since the late 1800s and until<lb />recently, that base was used for just purposes.<lb /><lb />In 2001 that changed. When the World Trade<lb />Center collapsed, our credibility as a champion of<lb />human rights and justice within the world commu- 5<lb />nity collapsed too.<lb /><lb />Since the attacks, we have used the Guantanamo<lb />Base to imprison and interrogate oenemy combatants ?<lb />without the restrictions of the Geneva Convention.<lb />Over the last five years more than 500 people have<lb />been detained in Guantanamo from over 30 countries<lb />without charge and with no release in sight.<lb /><lb />Few prisoners have ever actually been tried in<lb />Guantanamo for their crimes and the credibility of<lb />the courts at Guantanamo is non-existent. There<lb />have been multiple suicides, reports of torture and<lb />evidence of innocent people who were detained and -<lb />tortured. In 2003, three people hanged themselves<lb />with bed sheets and dozens have gone on hunger<lb />strikes to express their opposition.<lb /><lb />To this day, no detainee has been convicted of<lb />a criminal charge and several hundred have been<lb />released with no charge, no explanation and no com-<lb />pensation for the time they spent incarcerated.<lb /><lb />Guantanamo Bay is a clear violation of moral<lb />and legal standards and it must be shut down. Colin<lb />Powell, Condoleezza Rice, Amnesty International,<lb />NATO and the European Union have all insisted the<lb />base be shut down, but Bush will not listen.<lb /><lb />The man sent in to clean up Rumsfeld Ts office,<lb />Robert Gates; also urged the president to close the<lb />base in his first weeks on the job. Mr. Gates said that<lb />the trials held at Guantanamo would never be con-<lb />sidered legitimate and that the inmates who should<lb />stand trial should be taken to the U.S. and tried in<lb />real military courts.<lb /><lb />It seems like the whole world wants us to close<lb />the base but with Bush in office the base will remain<lb />open. Like the Iraq war, our base at Guantanamo is<lb />a scar that won't disappear until we set a deadline<lb />to get out. If the United States wants to ever regain<lb />its image as a nation that respects human life, we<lb />must make it known that we want the base to close,<lb />before 2009.<lb /><lb />Privacy laws<lb />in trouble<lb /><lb />Better enforcement of privacy laws<lb />needed<lb /><lb />KRYSTLE STRICKLIN<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Since the issuing of the Patriot Act in 2001, there<lb />has been ongoing conflict as to how and where we<lb />draw line on the issue of citizen Ts privacy. Those who<lb />support the Patriot Act believe that when dealing<lb />with national security, there are times when lines<lb />may need crossing in order to maintain the safety<lb />of our nation. I recognize the need for the FBI to<lb />have the ability to obtain personal information from<lb />people suspected of criminal activities, but as with<lb />any form of power there will always be people who<lb />abuse it.<lb /><lb />At a recent congressional hearing, the FBI<lb />received warnings to fix their problems with the<lb />misuse of privacy laws or face losing the extensive<lb />powers they gained after Sept. 11. During these pro-<lb />ceedings, CNN quoted Rep. Lamar Smith of Texas<lb />to saying, oThe problem is enforcement of the law,<lb />not the law itself. ? His comment addresses the core<lb />problem we have with the FBI and their undeniable<lb />misuse of powers.<lb /><lb />Naturally, when looking at an issue that you<lb />support, you want it to be flawless and perfect, but<lb />this is rarely the case for any of us, especially with<lb />concern to political issues.<lb /><lb />There is no abjuring the fact that the FBI has<lb />greatly abused their power to collect personal infor-<lb />mation such as e-mails or financial records from<lb />individuals. However, I do not believe revoking these<lb />powers is the solution to the problem.<lb /><lb />The founders of our nation spent laborious hours<lb />insuring that government agendas never come before<lb />the rights of Americans, and we all know a key part of<lb />this is our system of checks and balances. If we could<lb />carry this idea over into all aspects of government,<lb />it would create a greater range of integrity within ©<lb />all departments.<lb /><lb />In this case, to prevent the abuse of such exten-<lb />sive law enforcement powers all government agents<lb />who possess these powers must be carefully and<lb />constantly monitored. They.must know their limits<lb />and face swift and harsh punishment for violations<lb />of their powers.<lb /><lb />The point is not to hinder their investigations,<lb />but to make sure they are working within the guide-<lb />lines they are given and toward the goal of a safer<lb />America.<lb /><lb />{ More than a feelin T }<lb /><lb />McDoNALD'S CoNTINUES THEIR =<lb />ATTEMPT To ALTER THE SLANG McloB...<lb /><lb />Bi<lb />rd<lb /><lb />THURSDAY MARCH 29,2007 pace AG.<lb /><lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />Real men wear pastels.<lb /><lb />Sa. 5<lb /><lb />C24<lb /><lb />ww<lb /><lb />2O-EE-S<lb /><lb />i)<lb /><lb />IM LovIN T<lb />LOW HOURLY<lb />: WAGES. ae<lb /><lb />Cy<lb />a<lb />a<lb />4<lb />sD<lb /><lb />id<lb />EER,<lb />ww<lb /><lb />(a)<lb /><lb />I'M LovIN T<lb />_ NOT SPITTING<lb />IN YOUR Foop,<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />The East Carolinian does not<lb /><lb />T<lb /><lb />endorse statements made in Pirate Rants. Jenelle Conner<lb /><lb />Could it be<lb />wedded bliss?<lb /><lb />Why rush to the alter?<lb /><lb />SARAH CAMPBELL<lb />PULSE EDITOR<lb /><lb />Every time I am out and about shopping for<lb />whatever fashion craze has caught my eye in the latest<lb />issue of Glamour, I almost always manage to run into<lb />a former high school classmate. The temptation to<lb />duck and hide is always great, but usually I manage<lb />to saunter over and hone in on my best acting skills<lb />in an attempt to avoid being an absolute bitch.<lb /><lb />You may be wondering why running into<lb />these former ofriends ? is so utterly painful and<lb />why I feel the urge to pull my hair out while<lb />engaging in a fairly meaningless conversation<lb />that will inevitably only last about five minutes.<lb /><lb />Well, to be quite honest, a simple answer<lb />would be that I am tired of hearing yet another<lb />story about how two high school sweet-<lb />hearts have decided to enter into wedded bliss.<lb /><lb />It makes me sick to my stomach, weak in the knees<lb />and just plain irritated to have to endure story after<lb />story about how they decided that after four years of<lb />dating, that it just seemed like it was time to get married.<lb /><lb />In my opinion, if you have been with some-<lb />one for four years then the relationship should<lb />continue along a smooth path whether or not<lb />the idea of marriage is in the imminent future.<lb /><lb />If two people are meant to be together, then the<lb />concept of being engaged shouldn't have any affect at<lb />all on the relationship. Yet, I always find that people<lb />feel more secure in their relationship knowing that they<lb />are on the road to marriage, rather than just dating,<lb />when really little about the relationship has changed.<lb /><lb />Right now I am only 20 years old, why would I<lb />want to limit myself by adding marriage to the mix?<lb />When people get married, the problems of one part-<lb />ner suddenly become the problems of both parties.<lb /><lb />Instead of fighting over, who gets to pick the<lb />restaurant when the two of you go out for dinner,<lb />there are much larger issues at stake, such as<lb />how much each partner is contributing to the<lb />household finances, or who takes on more chores.<lb /><lb />I'm not saying that the institution of marriage isn Tt<lb />something that everyone should enjoy sometime in life,<lb />but I am questioning why students are racing to the alter.<lb /><lb />College will likely be the last time in many of our<lb />lives where many of us can spend a carefree night<lb />hanging out a IHOP until 3 a.m. sipping coffee and<lb />savoring meaningful conversation amongst friends.<lb />I find it unlikely that such mundane events can occur<lb />within the confounds of marriage since with mar-<lb />riage comes obligation. ;<lb /><lb />I Tm hoping that the next time I am shopping and<lb />run into an old classmate that I won't be regaled by<lb />their stories of wedding plans or proposals, but will<lb />get to savor the fact that they have just landed the job<lb />of their dreams or plan to spend the summer abroad<lb />studying French in Paris.<lb /><lb />I don Tt know about you, but I would much rather<lb />rejoice in their success as a person than hear them<lb />drone and on and on about how fantastic their sig-<lb />nificant other is, but hey, maybe that Ts just me.<lb /><lb /> o?m sorry | fired all those missiles at traq,<lb />gentlemen. | occasionally just, like, go ballistic. ?<lb /><lb />Sarah Bell<lb />Editor in Chief<lb />Elizabeth Lauten<lb /><lb />News Editor Asst. His grandfather was a signal<lb />caller at Hofstra while his father started his<lb />career at Wake Forest before transferring to<lb /><lb />New Hampshire.<lb /><lb />While growing up, Kass learned from his<lb />father the tools of the trade and in return he<lb />claims it helped him get the skills necessary<lb /><lb />for collegiate football.<lb /><lb /> oIt Ts a great opportunity having a quarterback<lb />lineage, ? said Kass. oIt really helped me get to that<lb />next level. My dad is an extremely knowledgeable<lb />quarterbacks coach and he coached me until I was<lb />a high school freshman. Then he kind of let me _<lb />go with the high school coaches and since with<lb /><lb />the quarterbacks coach in college<lb /><lb />coach. <lb />PAGE 12<lb /><lb />ECU women Ts rugby advances to semifinals<lb /><lb />Win over Georgia<lb />puts Pirates in line<lb />for repeat<lb /><lb />DANIELLE DOBBS<lb />ELISA FORD<lb /><lb />CONTRIBUTING WRITERS<lb /><lb />As the defending 2006 Division<lb />II South Conference Champions, the<lb />ladies of the ECU women Ts rugby<lb />club team have a reputation of suc-<lb />cess to uphold.<lb /><lb />In hope of returning to the DII<lb />Women's Rugby Final Four to defend<lb />their title, the rugby team traveled to<lb />Athens, Ga. to take on the University<lb />of Georgia on March 24th in the<lb />South Rugby Union Quarterfinals.<lb /><lb />The Pirates came out with a<lb />dominating intensity level and every<lb />intention to win. Although the<lb />weather was stifling, the conditions<lb />had little effect as the Pirates beat<lb />UGA, 17-15.<lb /><lb />The first try was scored by<lb />rookie flanker Sabrina Nichols in<lb />the opening minutes of the match.<lb /><lb />KASS continued<lb /><lb />from A7<lb /><lb />terback you cannot only take the<lb />hit, you can give the hit. ?<lb /><lb />While a quarterback compe-<lb />tition makes some signal callers<lb />worry, Kass welcomes the added<lb />pressure, as he believes it will<lb />make him better.<lb /><lb /> oIt Ts great, T Kass said of the<lb />current competition to replace<lb />Pinkney. oNo matter where you<lb />go in the country you're going<lb />to find competition. Competition<lb />always makes you better, so I<lb />think that a quarterback compe-<lb />tition anywhere is going to make<lb />you a better quarterback and a<lb />better person overall. ?<lb /><lb />Holtz has stated numerous<lb />times that the offensive unit is<lb />behind the defense in spring<lb />practice, in terms of growth.<lb />Kass is not sweating it however,<lb />as he thinks the offense has a real<lb />opportunity to grow because of a<lb />lot of young talent.<lb /><lb />The first intra-squad scrim-<lb />mage of spring practice took<lb />place last Friday, and while the<lb />scrimmage was simulated more<lb />towards the running game, Kass<lb />shined in his turn at quarterback.<lb />He completed his first four passes<lb />of the scrimmage and guided the<lb />Pirates T top offense. to a total of<lb />11 first downs, converting 6-of-10<lb />on third down.<lb /><lb /> oI think I did pretty well, ?<lb />Kass said of his performance.<lb /> oObviously there Ts always room<lb />for improvement, you always want<lb />to get more consistent and you<lb />always want to improve, but the<lb />biggest thing is to help to lead the<lb />offense up and down the field. ?<lb /><lb />As kickoff grows closer to the<lb />2007 season, Kass has set goals<lb />for the team and as long as the<lb />team wins, he will be satisfied.<lb /><lb /> oTeam wise is to just win<lb />games, ? Kass said of the team Ts<lb />goals. oGo in there and upset the<lb />bigger opponents, go. to a bowl<lb />game and win a bowl game this<lb />year. Personally, I just want to do<lb />well and help lead this team to the<lb />next level.
