David Ivey from the<lb />Greenville Police Depart-<lb />ment. oThe weather is warmer<lb />and more people are out. ?<lb /><lb />At around 2 a.m. on Feb. 25,<lb />two men were taken to the hospi-<lb />tal, one beaten unconscious, after<lb />a fight outside of the Phoenix<lb />nightclub.<lb /><lb />Authorities said 24-year-old,<lb />Keith Feggins, was arrested on<lb />the scene after he allegedly beat<lb /><lb />the two victims with a piece of<lb /><lb />PVC pipe.<lb /><lb />That same weekend, two men<lb />were arrested in conjunction with<lb />an assault at Dr. Unk Ts Oasis<lb />when an employee reported that<lb />the men tried to choke her. Buf-<lb />falo Wild Wings also reported<lb /><lb />. damages after aman punched and<lb />& broke one of the front windows<lb />2 when he saw his girlfriend inside.<lb />5 Police estimate $500 in damages,<lb /> but Buffalo Wild Wings man-<lb />gager, Glenn Snyder, said that the<lb />& damages due to loss of business,<lb />closing early and compensating<lb />patrons was much more.<lb /><lb />Due to the recent events,<lb />some students feel uneasy about<lb />going downtown.<lb /><lb /> oI don't really feel that safe<lb />at night, ? said Aimee Sullivan,<lb />Junior communication major. oWe<lb />all hear stories about fights and<lb />robberies down there, I guess it<lb />makes me feel a little unsafe. ?<lb /><lb />To help make students feel<lb />safer downtown, the Greenville<lb />Police Department has started<lb />to make changes and take more<lb />precautions in the area.<lb /><lb />The department is in the pro-<lb />cess of hiring several new officers<lb />to patrol downtown on Friday<lb />and Saturday nights. This will<lb />allow between 16 and 20 officers<lb />to be stationed in the area on the<lb />weekends.<lb /><lb />Traffic police and officers on<lb />bicycles have been added to the<lb />area as well.<lb /><lb /> oThese measures will result in<lb />at least two officers every couple<lb />of hundred feet, ? Ivey said.<lb /><lb />Light towers in dark places<lb />are a recent addition to down-<lb />town and some officers stationed<lb />in the area will have new, bright<lb />uniforms to make them more<lb />visible. The new uniforms will<lb />have large patches of neon yellow<lb />along with the traditional navy<lb />blue.<lb /><lb /> oWe are trying to be as visible<lb />as possible to let everyone know<lb />that we are around, ? <lb />Opinion<lb /><lb />As a conservative student at amajor university, I<lb />can almost expect a hostile environment toward my<lb />beliefs in the classroom, especially in political science<lb />courses. However, at what point does it go too far<lb />and become a personal attack on my freedoms and<lb />my right to believe what I want?<lb /><lb />I believe that is exactly what is happening right<lb />now, at the hands of a professor who has taken class<lb /><lb />time to stand up against not only me, but also those<lb /><lb />in the ECU Chapter of College Republicans and the S<lb /><lb />ideals and morals that we believe in.<lb /><lb />The College Republicans are hosting a week long<lb />Morals Week event this week. During the week,<lb />our goal is to promote our view of what American<lb />morals are, from supporting our troops to being<lb />pro-life. In addition, this week is not funded by ECU,<lb />unlike. the recent Diversity Week where ECU paid<lb /><lb />for various diverse events, which included a drag<lb /><lb />*<lb /><lb />show on Thursday.<lb /><lb />This isn Tt the extent of our demise however. In<lb />class, a political science professor announced our<lb />week long evént to his class, and went on to compare<lb />it to oHitler taking the Jews out to lunch for a week. ?<lb />Refusing to begin lecturing his class on topics related<lb />to the course material, this professor continued by<lb />asking if we College Republicans thought we had oa<lb />monopoly on morals. ?<lb /><lb />More jokes were made at the expense of several<lb />of the students not only in the class, but across the<lb />campus. This is wrong and should not be tolerated.<lb />A professor at this university should be supportive<lb />of his students and he shouldn't make fun of them for<lb />supporting their country and standing up for what<lb />they believe in. It is a shame that I have to wonder if<lb />my beliefs are going to be insulted at the hands of a<lb />professor, or if I will be made fun of for being active<lb />in a student organization.<lb /><lb />Such comments by someone in a role model posi-<lb /><lb />tion should be an embarrassment to ECU.<lb /><lb />Sincerely,<lb /><lb />Caleb Seamone<lb />ECU College Republicans<lb />NC Federation of College Republicans<lb /><lb />Looking to<lb />experience<lb />culture?<lb /><lb />_ Well, you missed a great chance<lb /><lb />YAZID FINN<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb />«<lb /><lb />You would not believe the time and energy put<lb />into some things that students take for granted.<lb />Every week you may head to your local campus news<lb />stand and expect the paper to be there. Regardless<lb />if you read the paper for the articles or for Pirate<lb />Rants, time was invested on the part of every writer<lb />and employee present that day. But do these writers<lb />ever know if their work is going unread first hand?<lb />Probably not. .<lb /><lb />With this in mind I change gears slightly to<lb />Diversity Week 2007. Now do not get me wrong, as<lb />a large part of the week was a success. Anyone who<lb />attended the stand up comedy or the drag show will<lb />attest to how well each event went. But there were<lb />other programs where attendance on the whole was<lb />lacking and I could not understand why.<lb /><lb />The Student Government Association put the<lb />diverse in this year Ts Diversity Week by their effort<lb />to hook every student Ts interest. Combined with the<lb />fact that every event (save one) was free of charge,<lb />all students should have attended at least one of the<lb />functions.<lb /><lb />Timing for any large-scale event can never be<lb />perfect and Diversity Week was no different. With<lb />other activities like Battle of the Bands one day<lb />and Dreamgirls running later in the week, getting<lb />student Ts attention was of course a problem. How-<lb />ever, this could not have been the only factor that<lb />hindered success, as nearly three programs ran each<lb />day sometimes over the course of eight hours.<lb /><lb />This leads us to Diversity Week Ts publicity. I<lb />think the best factor working for the program in<lb />general were the detailed teal shirts given out during<lb />nearly each of the events. With over five hundred<lb />shirts given out for free throughout the course of<lb />the week, word of mouth was almost dwarfed by<lb />walking advertisements that increased in numbers<lb />as the week carried on. Of course shirts alone are not<lb />enough to garner attention from the average student<lb />and this is a fact I am sure the SGA will keep in mind<lb />for next year Ts planning.<lb /><lb />But how about it, ECU? Who showed the most<lb />of their culture during Diversity Week 2007? The<lb />minorities who collaborated in presenting a bit of<lb />themselves you would never see in your daily lives, or<lb />the average American student, apathetic to anything<lb />that does not directly affect them.<lb /><lb />1 Delling 1 dike atcis<lb /><lb />WEDNESDAY MARCH 28,2007 pace A3<lb /><lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />You can lead a guy to college but you<lb />can Tt make him think. :<lb /><lb />MALL<lb />SEATING<lb /><lb />MOVIE<lb />THEATER<lb /><lb />BAR<lb /><lb />s<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />rie)<lb /><lb />SHOES<lb /><lb />al aliall aaldeld hei ddelhed VERA<lb /><lb />IN THE RACE<lb />TO BUILD A BIGGER<lb />SUMIBO JET, WE<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />BOTANICAL<lb />GARDEN<lb />PET RUN<lb /><lb />asollt<lb /><lb />The East Carolinian does not endorse statements made in Pirate Rants. How<lb />easy do our lives really have to be?<lb /><lb />I once thought that Kraft Macaroni and Cheese<lb />was pretty easy to make considering your options<lb />prior to that. Then there came the glorious Easy<lb />Mac and to my amazement it was still delicious, and<lb />as they promised, easy. Yet they didn Tt seem to stop<lb />there because they now have Easy Mac that comes in a<lb />microwave bowl, Easy Easy Mac. Absolute genius.<lb /><lb />There are a few other things that I just do not<lb />understand. The first item, which has been bugging<lb />my girlfriend and I for a long time now, are the<lb />popular Vera Bradley bags.<lb /><lb />No, I do not use this bag nor the wallets and<lb />whatever else that horrid company produces, but if I<lb />can say that I do understand what style is and ladies,<lb />you are lacking it if you carry this bag. Why do you<lb />carry around a bag that looks like my grandmother's<lb />quilt from the 1980s?<lb /><lb />I can understand that perhaps they are more<lb />comfortable for taking items to school, books and so<lb />on, but so would a potato sack. Between Vera Bradley<lb />and Uggs I can easily say that not only do most girls<lb />have absolutely no style but they also can mix and<lb />match a big paper bag and galoshes.<lb /><lb />Let Ts not get started on the bug-eyed sunglass,<lb />which is a recy¢led fad from the 1970s and 1980s and<lb />makes every girl look the same. Dare I throw tanning<lb />beds into the mix and the only difference we have<lb />among girls these days is their challenge to see who<lb />can get skin cancer in the next five years.<lb /><lb />I specifically remember when I was younger cut-<lb />ting my own jeans or tearing them by accident and<lb />thinking how cool it was. It seemed for some time<lb />we all got a lot of sense and realized that having<lb />tattered jeans that make you look poor and deprived<lb />was not stylish.<lb /><lb />Yet I could not help but notice that more and<lb />more girls are having holes and tears all over their<lb />pants. Am I the only one who looks at these girls<lb />and wonder if they fell down a long steep hill before<lb />arriving in class? Don Tt your mothers tell you to<lb />throw them away or are you looking to buy new<lb />Jeans every month? I guess I don Tt know, I do not<lb />wear these things and don Tt have to worry. All I can<lb />say is that I am embarrassed for you.<lb /><lb />I was going to go and rant about how much I<lb />hate loud subwoofers and the muffler kits on Honda<lb />Civics but those fads finally seem to be dying down<lb />and for the most part, I think many of us unanimously<lb />hated them. We all know the annoyance of sitting<lb />in silence only to be disturbed by obrrrrrrrr, chh,<lb />brrrrrrr ? and watching a Honda pass us with its super<lb />fly sound system and muffler mocking our slow and<lb />woman-like cars.<lb /><lb />My embarrassment for some of these products is<lb />very severe and as for some, I am proud that they are<lb />dying off. I can only hope that ultimately all of these<lb />things will eventually cease to exist and something<lb />better will come along. Ultimately I know that won't<lb />happen, but maybe someone will at least consider<lb />using a potato sack for a purse from now on.<lb /><lb />Sarah Bell<lb />Editor in Chief<lb /><lb />Elizabeth Lauten<lb />Asst. <lb />WEDNESDAY, MARCH 28, 2007<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN ¢ PULSE<lb /><lb />Blood supplies remain critically low<lb /><lb />Give the gift of life-<lb /><lb />ELISE PHILLIPS<lb />ASSISTANT PULSE EDITOR<lb /><lb />A few times a year, students<lb />at ECU have a chance to donate<lb />something important and life<lb />saving, yet many students don Tt.<lb /><lb />When the American Red<lb />Cross comes to campus with<lb />hopes of receiving numerous<lb />blood donations, they are often-<lb />times disappointed.<lb /><lb />Whether students are squea-<lb />mish about needles or have a<lb />schedule that is too busy to donate<lb />blood, the fact remains that the<lb />needed blood is not being donated<lb />at the offered times.<lb /><lb />Kasey Shue, Pitt County<lb />account manager for the Red<lb />Cross thinks that even a small<lb />change could affect student Ts abil-<lb />ity or willingness to donate blood.<lb /><lb /> oTraditionally, the campus<lb />blood drives have been held<lb />in Mendenhall Student<lb />Center. However, Mendenhall<lb />really isn Tt a central part of<lb /><lb />campus. Blood donations may<lb />increase if the drives were held in<lb />an area that was more convenient<lb />for students, ? said Shue.<lb /><lb />Shue and her colleagues feel<lb />that students should know the<lb />importance of donating blood.<lb /><lb /> oECU students should make<lb />blood donation a priority for<lb />the same reasons that anyone<lb />should... one blood donation<lb />can save as many as three<lb />lives. Also, there is 97 percent<lb />chance that you or someone<lb />you know will need blood in<lb />your lifetime. In the United<lb />States alone, someone needs blood<lb />every two seconds, ? Shue said.<lb /><lb />There are also other reasons<lb />why students should donate. Some.<lb />professors will give student Ts<lb />extra credit for donating blood,<lb />and students can receive up to five<lb />volunteer hours for one donation.<lb />These volunteer hours look great<lb />on a resume or job application.<lb /><lb /> oNot only are the volunteer<lb />hours great, it looks good on<lb />your resume, and you can really<lb />help people who are in need, ? said<lb /><lb />Reggie O TNeal, senior communi-<lb />cation major.<lb /><lb />More importantly, Pitt County<lb />Memorial Hospital uses more<lb />blood than any other facility in<lb />the Mid-Atlantic region. With the<lb />approach of the new Heart Center,<lb />donating blood will be more<lb />important than ever in the future.<lb /><lb /> oIt is the surrounding com-<lb />munity Ts responsibility to make<lb />sure that we collect enough blood<lb />to supply our local hospital with<lb />an adequate amount of blood to<lb />meet the needs of the patients.<lb /><lb /> oECU boasts the largest pop-<lb />ulation of any institution in the<lb />area. With a combined popula-<lb />tion of nearly 30,000 individu-<lb />als (staff, students and faculty)<lb />there is no reason that we can Tt<lb />collect a couple of hundred pints<lb />of blood on campus at every<lb />blood drive, ? Girls with boyfriends<lb />who are at least three years older.<lb />develop attitudes about relation-<lb />ships and sexual activities that<lb />can have lasting impacts on<lb />their lives.<lb /><lb />College provides a new situ-<lb />ation where teenagers begin to<lb />mature into adults, further defin-<lb />ing what they are looking for in<lb />a relationship. When asked how<lb />they felt about age differences<lb />in relationships, ECU students<lb />thought age was not as much as<lb />a factor as compatibility.<lb /><lb /> oAge doesn Tt matter as much<lb />as a person Ts maturity level, ? said<lb />Sophomore Jessica Davis. Davis<lb />was previously in a relationship<lb />with someone fours older back<lb />in high school. When asked if<lb />college students should date<lb />older people in the workforce,<lb />Davis said she could potentially<lb /><lb /> see problems in the relationship.<lb /><lb />Davis explained that while in<lb />college, many students. are, still<lb />somewhat reliant on their parents<lb />for financial support while some-<lb />one in the workforce has to sup-<lb />port themselves. However, while<lb /><lb />problems could occur due to age<lb /><lb />discrepancies, it is definitely pos-<lb />sible for the relationship to work.<lb /><lb /> oCollege students tend to<lb />date people closer to their age, ?<lb />said Amy Lyndon, social psy-<lb />chologist and professor in the<lb />ECU Psychology Department.<lb />Lyndon states that a three-year<lb />difference is relatively significant<lb />for college students.<lb /><lb /> oOne of the best predic-<lb />tors of success is the similarity<lb />between partners "it is true that<lb />birds of a feather flock together, ?<lb />Lyndon said.<lb /><lb />A problem with age differ-<lb />ences can occur when the power<lb />dynamics of a relationship come<lb />into play. Kass, 6-4,<lb />250 pounds, is noted for his physi-<lb />cal presence and strong arm.<lb /><lb />ECU football Head Coach Skip<lb />Holtz has been impressed by Kass T<lb />maturity and football IQ.<lb /><lb /> oHe has a lot of talent, ? said<lb />Holtz. oObviously, he is not as<lb />athletic as maybe some others<lb />but I think when you look at his<lb />strengths, he is a big, tall, physi-<lb /><lb />{ECU's Inside Source}<lb /><lb />quarterbacks are ready to step up<lb /><lb />WEDNESDAY MARCH 28, 2007<lb /><lb />PAGE AG<lb /><lb />e<lb /><lb />cal, throwing quarterback. I Tve ever<lb />met. Coach Holtz and Coach Petty<lb />did a great job, but I think Coach<lb />Fitch has really helped myself and<lb />the other quarterbacks get to the<lb />next level, ? Kass said.<lb /><lb />The quarterbacks are making<lb />progress everyday, but Holtz con-<lb />tinued to preach patience, espe-<lb />cially with top prospect Kass.<lb /><lb /> oIt takes a little bit longer<lb />for that type of quarterback to<lb />develop and materialize because<lb />of the development that has to go<lb />into the mental side of it than it<lb />does an athlete that just puts the<lb />ball under his arm and does what<lb />God gave him the ability to do, ?<lb />said Holtz.<lb /><lb />Holtz added, oWhen you look<lb />at most throwing quarterbacks,<lb />they don Tt develop until their<lb />junior and senior years. When<lb />you look at James Pinkney and<lb />what he did here as a junior and<lb />senior, it was totally different from<lb />what he did as a freshman and<lb />sophomore. ?<lb /><lb />Holtz understands that expec-<lb />tations have skyrocketed since last<lb />year, but knows that his top gun<lb />slinger still has a lot to learn.<lb /><lb /> oHe just needs to keep evolving<lb />into that role, and it Ts going to be<lb />a year long process. ?<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Keli Harrell had a rough outing in the first game of the series against Marshall, but came firing back in the third matchup to pitch a shutout.<lb /><lb />Pirates take one from<lb />Thundering Herd<lb /><lb />JOSEPH MURPHY<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />The ECU softball team lost<lb />twice to the Marshall Thunder-<lb />ing Herd in a doubleheader last<lb />Saturday, but bounced back Sunday<lb />with a shutout victory in Hunting-<lb />ton, W.V.<lb /><lb />In the first game Saturday,<lb />the Pirates held a 4-3 lead in the<lb />bottom of the sixth inning when<lb />Marshall Ts Samantha Rodriguez<lb />hit a two run home run off of the<lb />Pirates starting pitcher Keli Har-<lb />rell to give the Thundering Herd<lb />the 5-4 victory.
