She<lb />was told the group needed to be removed because it<lb />was against campaign rules. According to the SGA<lb />constitution, oall campaigning via a third party-<lb />owned Web site is prohibited. ?<lb /><lb />The student was asked to remove. the group,<lb /><lb /> T however as an independent student unaffiliated with<lb /><lb />the various tickets and SGA, she asserted her right<lb />to freely express her opinion online.<lb /><lb />As yet, the incident has not been followed up,<lb />but we at the East Carolinian hope it was merely a<lb />misunderstanding, and that no other unaffiliated<lb />students have been asked to censor themselves with<lb />regards 10 elections.<lb /><lb />So today, seize the opportunity to freely express<lb /><lb />your opinion of SGA candidates and exercise your<lb /><lb />_ right to vote "whether online or in the middle of<lb /><lb />Wright Plaza.<lb /><lb />Sarah Bell<lb />Editor in Chief<lb /><lb />Do I look fat?<lb /><lb />Eating disorder cause for concern<lb /><lb />MARGOT ROGERSON<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb /> oDoes this make me look fat? ? Every girl is guilty<lb />of saying it, and every guy is tired of hearing it. So<lb />why has this phrase become such a common piece<lb />of our daily jargon? I recently had to give a speech<lb />for a communication class, of which I could choose<lb />any topic.<lb /><lb />I knew right away that I would write about<lb />the increasing numbers of college students with<lb />anorexia. I decided to research about student<lb />anorexia because, as a female student, I have seen<lb />and felt the pressures to stay thin.<lb /><lb />While researching, I came across an amazing<lb />statistic. According to the National Eating Disor-<lb />ders Association, anorexia nervosa has the highest<lb />mortality rate of any mental illness.<lb /><lb />Obviously, this disease is something that should<lb />be taken extremely seriously, so why do so many<lb />girls think starving themselves is the only way to<lb />gain acceptance?<lb /><lb />The most common answer to this question is<lb /><lb />- that it is the fault of the mass media. It is true; the<lb /><lb />looks of the modeling and acting industries have<lb />changed. Celebrity body images have changed, and<lb />the desire to achieve their status has increased. But,<lb />surprisingly, this is not always the main driving force<lb />behind student anorexia.<lb /><lb />The media is given the influential power it has<lb />because girls feel peer-pressured. A spokesperson for<lb />the NEDA says that the media is not the underlying<lb />cause of anorexia. Jessica Weiner is an eating disor-<lb />der survivor. She says, oNo show taught me how to<lb />have an eating disorder. I learned from friends. ? So<lb />why is the peer-pressure, especially among so many<lb />females, so demanding?<lb /><lb />Psychologists are beginning to back up Weiner Ts<lb />point of view. According to Andrew B. Geier, a<lb />university researcher, owhat we know about weight<lb />and eating disorders is, indeed, that kids tend to be<lb />influenced by their peers. ? The old cliche, oevery-<lb />one is doing it, ? plays into effect here. Some cases<lb />of anorexia begin not because everyone around the<lb />person has an eating disorder, but rather because that<lb />person perceives that everyone else does.<lb /><lb />So what will it take for the trend to change? How.<lb /><lb />far will students go before they realize the danger<lb />they are getting themselves into?<lb /><lb />Starving oneself may seem like the only way<lb />to lose weight, but there are healthy and effective<lb />ways to stay fit. There are also people that can guide<lb />weight loss and make sure that you stay healthy.<lb /><lb />Unfortunately, there will always be individuals<lb />who will have eating disorders. But I hope the ones<lb />that are only influenced by today Ts society will realize<lb />the danger involved.<lb /><lb />Eating disorders can be as addictive as nicotine<lb />and equally as difficult to quit. What may start as a<lb />way to lose a couple of pounds before bikini season<lb />can become a deadly disease.<lb /><lb />_ Anorexia and other eating disorders are a con-<lb />tinually increasing problem that should be addressed.<lb />It is time to take a stand against eating disorders.<lb /><lb />MCT<lb /><lb />{ This opinion, sir, is free }<lb /><lb />SINCE THAT RE<lb /><lb />aL eaane pas<lb />PRINCESS A ial oe<lb />ay AHEAD, TASTE iT!<lb /><lb />TUESDAY MARCH 27, 2007<lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />| think Chuck Norris should be our<lb />commencement speaker.<lb /><lb />PAGE A3<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />The East Carolinian does not endorse statements made in Pirate Rants. Lately, I Tve been getting<lb />attention from his older brother who Ts single and<lb />looks great. He Ts always teasing me and passing nice<lb />comments whenever we're around others. Sometimes<lb />he takes a long stare at me which makes me feel like<lb />he wants to tell me something but it also makes me<lb />very confused. By his behavior I found myself think-<lb />ing of him constantly and wanting to look sexier<lb />whenever we're all going out together and whenever<lb />I go to their house "always refreshing my make-up<lb />and try to look and sound sexy. I suspect his brother<lb />(my boyfriend) is aware of this because sometimes<lb />he makes comments like oyou two get on really well<lb />with each other ? and so on. Can this behavior lead<lb />to ruining my relationship with his brother? Could<lb />it be he fancies me or am I just fantasizing? If so,<lb />how do I stop this? I love my boyfriend and do not<lb />wish to lose him.<lb /><lb />Sincerely,<lb />Just Wondering<lb /><lb />It sounds like you're doing a little more than won-<lb />dering. They as<lb />brothers would probably never be the same again.<lb /><lb />Since you've been with this guy for so long I<lb />doubt that you can break it off with him and then date<lb />the brother. You may have to consider letting it all go.<lb />That choice will not be easy. Wait it out. I<lb />really did. As someone who loves both indie music<lb />and writing about indie music, I was sure this would<lb />be the show for me.. While other girls were busy<lb />discussing what Audrina did to whoever on oThe<lb />Hills, ? I was sure that I Td be girlishly gushing over<lb />who used what clever metaphor to describe a Blonde<lb />Redhead album. Admittedly, I was hoping to see kids<lb />like myself "bookish, neurotic and well, owriterly. ?<lb />Sure not all writers are obsessive kooks, but I Td be<lb />willing to bet that a lot of the good ones are. And<lb />still, at very least I expected that the kids on oI Tm<lb />From Rolling Stone ? would, um, actually care about<lb />writing. So you can imagine my surprise when six<lb />telegenic twenty-somethings who would rather party<lb />and mug for the cameras than hone their writing<lb />skills sauntered into the Rolling Stone headquarters<lb />in designer jeans. What gives?<lb /><lb />That Ts when I remembered that this wasn Tt<lb />Hunter S. Thompson's Rolling Stone. This was the<lb />new Rolling Stone, the one with Christina Aguilera<lb />humping a guitar on the cover (has anyone ever<lb />seen her play a guitar?) So of course it would be<lb />painfully obvious that the finalists were chosen<lb />not for their work ethic or flair for writing, but for<lb />their particular look. Boy, was it painful "dangling<lb />modifiers, syntax problems and comma splices like<lb />there was some kind of two-for-one sale at the bad<lb />grammar flea market. When Christina, the<lb />eventual winner, is asked to rewrite her first piece,<lb />she is furious. Being asked to turn in usable writing<lb />at a magazine? As if! These kids obviously think<lb />working at Rolling Stone will be an endless haze of<lb />cold kegs, cool parties and hot celebrities. They seem<lb />to be offended at the implication that they get real<lb />work done. Which is strange anyway, considering<lb />they aren't being asked to do that much work. After<lb />all, everyone knows interns get coffee, make copies<lb />and push papers. While some are<lb />fueled by sophomoric personal dif:<lb />ferences, most are deeply rooted in<lb />vast theological disparities. While<lb />many religions preach messages<lb />of intolerance and hate, Buddhism<lb />has for thousands of years taught<lb />a message of compassion and love,<lb />of oneness and knowledge and of<lb />an ideal that humans so seldom<lb />realize: Peace.<lb /><lb />Buddhism, one of the world Ts<lb /><lb />oldest religions and also one of =<lb /><lb />the very few godless religions,<lb />was started 2,400 " 2,500 years<lb />ago by Buddha. Buddha was a<lb />prince who would have lived an<lb />opulent life of privilege but instead<lb />chose to pursue a life of what he<lb />considered to have aesthetic mean-<lb />ing. Buddha renounced his nobility<lb /><lb />and traveled throughout India<lb />living among forest dwellers,<lb />called aesthetics; where he shared<lb />his experiences.<lb /><lb />Today, Buddhism is the unify-<lb />ing religion of eastern Asia and<lb /><lb /> Zen meditation is practiced by a variety of Buddhists around the world as a form of disciplined prayer.<lb /><lb />worldwide there are an estimated<lb />300 " 400 million Buddhists.<lb />According to Dr. Derek Maher,<lb />professor of religious studies, Bud-<lb />dhism is comprised of four central<lb />ideals known as the oFour Noble<lb /><lb />Truths, ? which were central teach-<lb />ings of Buddha..<lb /><lb />The first noble truth is that<lb /> oall is suffering. ? To Buddhists<lb />there are three types of suffer-<lb />ing, suffering of change which<lb /><lb />is best described as the feeling of<lb />buying a new car and then kicking<lb />yourself after thinking about how<lb />much money you spent, suffer-<lb />ing of suffering which is physical<lb />pain, and suffering of pervasive<lb />conditioning which deals with<lb />reincarnation in that if a person<lb />does evil things in their present<lb />life, in their next life they will<lb />come back as something they<lb />would definitely prefer not to be.<lb /><lb />The second noble truth is<lb />that odesire causes suffering, ?<lb />such as lusting after another<lb />person and ultimately being<lb />caught when you are already in a<lb />wonderful relationship.<lb /><lb />The third noble truth is called<lb /> otrue cessations. ? This has to do<lb />with bringing suffering to an end<lb />and reaching Nirvana. Nirvana is<lb />described as the end of all suffer-<lb />ing and the achievement of oneness<lb />with Buddha, essentially ending<lb />reincarnation. The final noble<lb />truth deals with the otrue paths ?<lb />of Buddhism. It has<lb />been documented that Buddhist<lb />monks can use mediation to slow<lb />their heartbeat down to one beat<lb />a minute and slow their breath-<lb />ing to extraordinarily low levels.<lb /><lb />Like Christianity, Buddhism<lb />comes in many diverse forms both<lb />regionally and idealistically. Japa-<lb />nese Buddhism and Tibetan Bud-<lb />dhism, to which the majority of<lb />the world is familiar with, are very<lb />different even though the regions<lb />aren't geographically far away.<lb /><lb />Ideologically there are two<lb />main schools of Buddhism,<lb />Mahayana and Theravada.<lb />Mahayana preaches compassion<lb />and wisdom whereas Theravada<lb />has less concern for compassion<lb />and instead focuses on the bet-<lb />terment of life through the bet-<lb />terment of oneself.<lb /><lb />Other smaller schools include<lb />Karmapa and Geluk.
