The<lb />SAT is a sub-organization of Pi<lb />Kappa Delta, ECUTs communica-<lb />tion fraternity, but is serving as an<lb />apolitical organization with no des-<lb />ignated officers or group members.<lb /><lb />oWe hope this group [SAT]<lb />will actually serve more as a<lb /><lb />think-tank; a separate business<lb /><lb />entity that can include any and<lb />every ECU student or group<lb />interested in becoming involved,?<lb />said PKDTs president and SAT<lb />facilitator, Roger Conner.<lb />All finances raised by SAT go<lb />directly to Darfur and SAT has<lb />collaborated with SaveDarfur.<lb />com, one of the largest organized<lb />advocates for the elimination of<lb />all violence in Sudan.<lb />According to Brendan I.<lb />Koerner from his article in Slate<lb />Magazine entitled, oWho Are the<lb /><lb />d<lb /><lb />Contributed photo<lb /><lb />Janjaweed? A Guide to the Suda-<lb />nese Militiamen,? the Janjaweed<lb />are mostly men of Arab decent<lb />who have long been in opposi-<lb />tion to DarfurTs settled African<lb />farmers, (differently identified by<lb />their darker skin).<lb /><lb />Koerner makes it clear that<lb />the Janjaweed have long been<lb />fighting for control over DarfurTs<lb />scarce water and useable farm-<lb />land. However; it was in 2003<lb />that these armed forces became<lb />increasingly more aggressive.<lb /><lb />oTwo non-Arab groups, the<lb />Sudan Liberation Army and<lb />the Justice and Equality Move-<lb />ment, took up arms against the<lb />Sudanese. government, alleging<lb />mistreatment by the Arab regime<lb />in Khartoum. In response to the<lb />uprising, the Janjaweed militias<lb />began pillaging towns and vil-<lb />lages inhabited by members of<lb />the African tribes from which the<lb />rebel armies draw their strength<lb />"the Zaghawa, Masalit and<lb />Fur tribes,? said Koerner, again<lb />taken from his article in Slate<lb />Magazine.<lb /><lb />But to say that the Jan-<lb />jaweed simply pillage would<lb />be like saying a tsunami<lb />only trickles in over a city.<lb />According to SaveDarfur.com, the<lb /><lb />Members of Pi Kappa Delta gather outside of Mendenhall.<lb /><lb />emer<lb /><lb />Janjaweed have actually caused<lb />over 400,000 deaths and have<lb />forced over 2 million people to flee<lb />their homes only to live in refu-<lb />gee camps in neighboring Chad.<lb />The situation in Sudan has been<lb />described as othe largest and<lb />most complex humanitarian<lb />problem on the globe,? according<lb />Antonio Guterres, the United<lb />Nations High Commissioner for<lb />Refugees.<lb /><lb />oOur mission is to raise public<lb />awareness about the ongoing<lb />genocide in Darfur and to mobi-<lb />lize a unified response to the<lb />atrocities that threaten the lives of<lb />two million people in the Darfur<lb />region,? states the Save Darfur<lb />Coalition mission statement.<lb />Besides collaborating with Save-<lb />Darfur.com, SAT is: currently<lb /><lb />calling out to every organization ©<lb /><lb />on campus for their participation<lb />as well.<lb /><lb />oTL encourage everyone to take<lb />action, no matter how small.<lb />The power of one person utiliz-<lb />ing their voice to help others is<lb />immense. It was simply a bug in<lb />the OneStop system.<lb /><lb />This bug could have occurred<lb />from the writing of bad codes<lb />that didnTt work as the program<lb />intended it to.<lb /><lb />oIt is a regrettable incident;<lb />however, we are confident that it was<lb />not a malicious one. In other words,<lb />there is no evidence to indicate any<lb />theft of data,? said Interim Chief<lb />Information Officer Jack Brinn.<lb /><lb />An internal audit of the pro-<lb />cedures surrounding the previous<lb />breach is in the final stages. This<lb />audit will determine any proce-<lb />dural changes that need to be made<lb />to prevent a future breach.<lb /><lb />Another examination by an out-<lb />side firm of the OneStop program-<lb />ming code will determine if there are<lb />any other possibilities of personal<lb /><lb />information in danger of exposure.<lb /><lb />An outside firm has not yet<lb />been selected, but a few companies<lb />have made proposals.<lb /><lb />oT did feel safe before, but now<lb />that this happened ITm not sure.<lb />We put our info in systems like<lb />that [OneStop] thinking that<lb />ECU is going to keep it safe. T<lb />donTt think anybody could have<lb />predicted that something like<lb />that would happen,? said freshmen<lb />Jymme Anne Walton.<lb /><lb />According to the Executive<lb />Director of University Communica-<lb />tions John Durham, there have been<lb />a number of contacts concerned<lb />about their credit card information.<lb /><lb />in process<lb /><lb />If these contacts wish to reac-<lb />tivate their credit card to ensure<lb />their information has not been<lb />revealed, the University will look<lb />into these individualsT situations to<lb />decide if they will cover the reacti-<lb />vation fees, according to Durham.<lb /><lb />oIf any organization or insti-<lb />tution requires us to provide this<lb />sort of information, it has an obli-<lb />gation to protect it, to anticipate<lb />ways that it might be accessed and<lb />take preventive steps. It is no dif-<lb />ferent from any other duty of care,?<lb />said Professor Bill Loving.<lb /><lb />If anyone is worried that their<lb />credit card information has been<lb />revealed, credit card reports are<lb />free of charge once a year.<lb /><lb />According to Brinn, ECU has<lb />never had an incident like this<lb />occur before in the past. Over the<lb />past two years over 101 million<lb />clients of major banks, universi-<lb />ties, retail businesses, brokerage<lb />houses, and federal and state agen-<lb />cies have experienced personal<lb />data exposure.<lb /><lb />These incidents occur because<lb />of hackers, lost laptops and other<lb />situations. Brinn thinks that a few<lb />people who suspect their informa-<lb />tion was revealed in the ECU inci-<lb />dent had higher worries because<lb />they might have experienced<lb />identity theft before, according<lb />to Brinn.<lb /><lb />oI donTt think it is right that<lb />they use our social security num-<lb />bers as our student identifications.<lb />It is good that they are going to<lb />fix that with Banner. As a uni-<lb />versity, if they are going to have<lb />our personal information, I think<lb />that they should be able to keep it<lb />more concealed,? said sophomore<lb /><lb />eu Ashley Stanton.<lb /><lb />Banner, which students will<lb />begin using to register for the<lb />2007 summer and fall semesters,<lb />will terminate the use of social<lb />security numbers as student iden-<lb />tification numbers.<lb /><lb />oIf my parents are going to pay<lb /><lb />see PRIVACY page A3<lb /><lb /></p>

Glover said.<lb />Maggie Kettler, IT consultant,<lb /><lb />has assisted Wagner and Glover<lb /><lb />with this project by suggesting the<lb />type of software they should use and<lb />by helping them enter the informa-<lb />tion for each organization into the<lb />database.<lb /><lb />Originally, the software options<lb />that Wagner and Glover were con-<lb />sidering were Microsoft Access and<lb />Microsoft Excel.<lb /><lb />After meeting with Kettler<lb />and seeing how easy the program<lb />would be for students to use, they<lb />decided to use Microsoft SharePoint.<lb /><lb />oIt is Web-based software. |<lb />showed it to them [Wagner and<lb />Glover] and they liked the features<lb />that it had to offer,T said Kettler.<lb /><lb />Students can access information<lb />on or off campus, using SharePoint<lb />software. The only other software<lb />needed is Microsoft Office and<lb /><lb />an Internet browser, according to<lb />Kettler.<lb /><lb />oThis service would replace a<lb />lot of the spreadsheets, word docu-<lb />ments, and e-mail attachments that<lb />people use to communicate with one<lb />another,? Kettler said.<lb /><lb />oSharePoint is on the ECU net-<lb /><lb />work so any student with an ECU ©<lb /><lb />username and password can log on,?<lb />said Wagner.<lb /><lb />ITCS has found value in Share-<lb />Point and has purchased a license so<lb />that external collaborators outside<lb />the university can participate in<lb />the sharing information and ideas,<lb />according to Kettler.<lb /><lb />oThere will.be limits on who<lb />will be able to view the informa-<lb />tion, that will be decided on by the<lb />administrators of the station here,?<lb />Kettler said.<lb /><lb />The decision for the limitation<lb />of viewers is similar to the privacy<lb />setting on Myspace where one can<lb />select who is allowed to view their<lb />page, said Kettler.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />news@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />(ome YOUR ALL DAY HANGOUT =<lb />_758-2774 Take out<lb /><lb />10PM<lb /><lb />301 South Jarvis Street<lb />New Cool T-shirts Available<lb /><lb />NEWLY REMODELED OUTDOOR PATIO = il<lb /><lb />NOW HIRING<lb /><lb />News needs reporters.<lb /><lb />12 Delicious<lb />Combos - $5.69<lb />EVERY DAY Taner<lb /><lb />Pick up an application in our newsroom (Self<lb />Help Building Suite 100F, Evans and Third<lb />Streets across from the courthouse) or online at<lb /><lb />www.theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb /></p>

<lb />inion<lb /><lb />ne<lb /><lb />Planning to _<lb />save your soul?<lb /><lb />One bottle at a time<lb /><lb />YAZID FINN<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Just when everything seems to be going<lb />great in the world for religions, someone comes<lb />along to stir up trouble. Shifting through my<lb />favorite Internet news sources, I stumbled across<lb />something that really raised an eyebrow and<lb />surprised me that I had not heard of it before.<lb /><lb />The subject of my sudden perked interest"bot-<lb />tled Holy Water. Apparently, while the water does<lb />not ward off Vampires or any other fiends of the<lb />undead, drinking it will apparently ocure what ails<lb />you.? Simply drinking the water will cleanse sins,<lb />wash away remorse and cure that parched your<lb /><lb />throat on a warm day. Blessed by everyone from g<lb /><lb />a Priest to a Rabbi (no joke), you begin to wonder<lb />why in GodTs name you would drink anything else!<lb /><lb />Maybe itTs the fact they have yet to invent<lb />Holy Lemonade. Even when you could not<lb />see yourself paying for bottled Holy Water,<lb />let alone drinking it, why are other people?<lb />When a drink makes the claim that it can wash<lb />away your sins as well as your thirst, everyone<lb />should take a step back to examine that premise.<lb /><lb />To begin with, any devout religious individual<lb />takes the idea of sinning seriously. With heaven<lb />and hell in mind during their daily lives, drink-<lb />ing a bottle of water to counter greed or sexual<lb />promiscuity seems like a small price to pay. But<lb />wait until you see the guarantee some retailers<lb />are proudly claiming to all you sinners out there.<lb />Drinking their water carries the guarantee of not<lb />going to hell. ThatTs right, friends"chugging<lb />down one of these bad boys after a night on the<lb />town will right all that you have made wrong.<lb /><lb />That is where my problem first lies with. these<lb />claims. For Christians, the Bible gives plenty of com-<lb />mentary on holy water, but never mentions drinking<lb />it. Examples of water being mentioned are Baptism,<lb />which in some denominations, the ritual is necessary.<lb />But in no denomination that I can think of do they<lb />believe that drinking Holy Water is a guaranteed way<lb />to salvation. All denominations would tell you a belief<lb />in Jesus Christ as the Lord and way would be your<lb />only ticket into heaven, not a drink you order by mail.<lb /><lb />Secondly, these retailers expand out for busi-<lb />ness to other religions, naming those who follow<lb />Judaism, Islam and others that can be saved by<lb />drinking their miracle Holy Water. But why? Jews<lb />do not even believe in a hell, so buying a more<lb />expensive water for the purpose of steering clear<lb />of a place they do not believe in makes no sense.<lb />Muslims look only to God for salvation. If they<lb />were to consider that a bottle of water could help<lb />them into heaven, Muslims would be commit-<lb />ting a larger sin than they were trying to avoid.<lb /><lb />Faith is very. personal and should be held to a<lb />one on one relationship with God. Faith in God<lb />is what any religious follower should be wor-<lb />ried about, not faith in a bottle of water blessed<lb />by someone who supposedly has faith in God.<lb /><lb />Unless they come out with blessed Naked Fruit<lb />drinks... how could anyone turn those down?<lb /><lb />Hypocrisy at home<lb /><lb />U.S. to begin development of first<lb />new hydrogen bomb in two decades<lb /><lb />JUSTIN SUMMERS<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />News came out last Friday in the LA Times that<lb />the U.S. Energy Department has announced plans to<lb />build anew hydrogen bomb, and intends to revamp our<lb />cold-war era nuclear arsenal. This is the latest addi-<lb />tion to the long list of hypocritical actions initiated by<lb />Bush in his dreadful reign as Commander and Chief.<lb /><lb />The term hypocrite as defined by the Webster's dic-<lb />tionary as oa person who acts in contradiction to his or<lb />her stated beliefs or feeling.? If we use this framework,<lb />would it be irrational to say that Bush is a hypocrite?<lb /><lb />Last time I checked we invaded Iraq to find the<lb />very same weapons we have now publicly admitted<lb />intentions to build more of. The latest enemy of the<lb />state is Iran, because of their intent to enrich ura-<lb />nium and our distrust of their intentions for its use.<lb />We recently came to an accord with North Korea<lb />after two years of hostility because of their nuclear<lb />intentions. We have publicly demonized all of these<lb />enemies in the media for their intent to build weapons<lb />of mass destruction, and now we are building more<lb />doomsday devices to add to our arsenal of over 6,000? -<lb /><lb />What is this saying to the world? In my<lb />opinion it is just another attempt by the Bush<lb />administration to flex their muscle and tell the<lb />world oI do what I want!? It is entirely unneces-<lb />sary to add to our already un-holy defense budget,<lb />especially for more nuclear weapons, regardless<lb />of the threat of other nuclear powers in the world.<lb />Currently we have thousands of nuclear weapons<lb />left over from the cold war and they are still as<lb />effective and active as they were 30 years ago.<lb /><lb />If we go ahead with these plans, not only are<lb />we putting the world at even more risk for acci-<lb />dental and non-accidental nuclear war, we would<lb />be initiating a new arms race for those countries<lb />that donTt have nuclear arms yet. If Iran and North<lb />Korea were not serious of their intentions to build<lb />nuclear technology, this new show of disregard for<lb />international peace will surely offer justification for<lb />them to go ahead and pursue their nuclear ambitions.<lb /><lb />More than increasing the threat of nuclear war,<lb />the Bush administration is committing themselves<lb />to yet another immoral action in international<lb />politics. A nuclear: weapon has never been used<lb />in warfare and the devastation that would result<lb />is truly unimaginable. ITm not saying that Bush<lb />intends to commit our country to nuclear war,<lb />but anything is possible when we have a country<lb />run by men who have authorized the indiscrimi-<lb />nate bombing of several countries since 9/11.<lb /><lb />Once again, the actions of the Bush administra-<lb />tion have left me concerned for the future. Will we<lb />continue to pursue our own pernicious and aggres-<lb />sive motives of world domination, or will we commit<lb />ourselves to a peaceful future for our children?<lb /><lb />{ An outlet for expression }<lb /><lb />THURSDAY MARCH 22, 2007<lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />| could have saved a rain forest... if you<lb />didnTt make me print out all this paper<lb />for this stupid project.<lb /><lb />PAGE A4<lb /><lb />THE NEW<lb />LOGO, AL!<lb /><lb />- et<lb /><lb />The East Carolinian does not endorse statements made in Pirate Rants. At present, approximately 80 percent of<lb />all college students are employed while completing<lb />their undergraduate education. Even among students<lb />under the age of 24 at four-year colleges, more than<lb />50 percent are employed during the school year.?<lb /><lb />Why then do students repeatedly hear we are being<lb />prepared for a world that we are already a part of?<lb /><lb />I am not the only student who pays all of my bills<lb />without any support from my parents, many students do<lb />not have anything handed to them. This is the real world.<lb /><lb />On top ofa work schedule, many students have to<lb />deal with the stress of homework deadlines and the<lb />coordination of group projects in their spare time.<lb /><lb />I have heard professors comment that for every<lb />hour spent in the classroom, a ogood? college student<lb />is supposed to spend two to three hours studying<lb />outside of class.<lb /><lb />So, if a student is registered as full-time, they<lb />are taking 12 hours or more, and in addition to the<lb />12 hours in the classroom, a student is supposed to<lb />study 24 " 36 hours.<lb /><lb />Essentially, just by completing our studies, we as<lb />college students are looking at a full-time job before<lb />tacking on.the additional hours spent.at.the money-<lb />making places of employment.<lb /><lb />Students have the same responsibilities as every-<lb />one else in this world and we are paying for an educa-<lb />tion. As a working student, I donTt expect any special<lb />treatment, but I do demand respect.<lb /><lb />If 1 am competent enough to sit in a classroom and<lb />acknowledge my professors, then I should receive the<lb />same respect and acknowledgement as anyone else<lb />in the oreal world.?<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />I Want)<lb />CHANGE.<lb /><lb />Sarah Bell<lb />Editor in Chief<lb /><lb />Elizabeth Lauten<lb />Asst. Everything is clear blue<lb />skies and vivid rainbows day after<lb />day, but the moment you lose<lb />that significant other, life turns<lb />into a deluge. Nevertheless, this<lb />need not be the case. There is a<lb />little known secret in the book of<lb />relationships, filed under the chap-<lb />ter on breaking up and I am here<lb />to share it.<lb /><lb />While this book is public<lb />knowledge and everyone has<lb />access to it, rarely do guys actu-<lb />ally take the time to read what is<lb />available. This book is past expe-<lb />rience, its chapters are insights of<lb />those who have been there, done<lb />that. It is when relationships with<lb />a significant other finally reach a<lb />breaking point that both parties<lb /><lb />If you do not feel you can<lb />improvise, then stick with what<lb />works. Location is almost as<lb />important as what a guy can say to<lb />a girl and this fact should always<lb />be kept in mind. To begin, do not<lb /><lb />think to make a scene. Breaking up °<lb /><lb />is not a science and as such, never<lb />goes as expected.<lb /><lb />Marina Bonner, a sophomore<lb />elementary education major,<lb /><lb />__ Laughter,? on<lb />__hames of Holoca<lb /><lb />need to know how and when 10 37.2]<lb />~~o Tike to keep the relationship after<lb /><lb />knows to keep things between<lb />those involved.<lb /><lb />oThe best way to break up<lb />is definitely somewhere private.<lb />The relationship was between you<lb />and that person, not you and the<lb />world,? said Bonner.<lb /><lb />When selecting the place<lb />to call it quits, however, plan<lb />ahead. Be considerate of<lb />everyone involved or the<lb />event will leave both<lb />with a bad after taste.<lb />You do not want your<lb />ex to think of how<lb />horrible you were<lb />to them every time<lb />they go to the movies,<lb />or out to eat.<lb /><lb />oDefinitely do it in<lb />person, because face to face<lb />is key. Its kind of cliché but<lb />honesty is the best policy, so<lb />do it in person. If you're going to<lb />break someoneTs heart, look them<lb />in the eye and get it over with,?<lb />said Vincent Woods, freshmen<lb />political science major. |<lb />_,Deciding the terms you would<lb /><lb />breaking up is also crucial. Will<lb />the two of you remain friends<lb />and on speaking terms? On the<lb /><lb />other hand, will things fall to a -<lb /><lb />middle school level and you erase<lb />the person from your mind? The<lb />method and execution of the break<lb />up has a direct impact on how<lb />things will remain between you<lb />and your ex<lb /><lb />oThe way to do it depends on<lb /><lb />the couple. If you were really close<lb />then it may be better to do it in<lb />person. If you didnTt see each other,<lb />all the time then on the phone<lb />would be OK since you won't run<lb />into each other all the time. Online<lb />is never really a<lb />good idea<lb /><lb />though,?<lb />Bonner said: :<lb />Always watch<lb /><lb />what you say when it<lb />finally comes to getting<lb />things off your chest. This<lb /><lb />works both ways, as things spoken<lb />in anger are hard to take back.<lb />Breaking up is a tough moment for<lb />both sides, but both involved can<lb />still help the other through it. Just remember that<lb />karma does exist in this universe,<lb />and things have a way of coming<lb />back to haunt you.<lb /><lb />That being said, a breakup is<lb />often determined by the nature of<lb />a coupleTs estrangement. Breaking up is hard,<lb />but things you find out afterwards<lb />may be even harder,? said Chris-<lb />topher Kent, sophomore political<lb />science major.<lb /><lb />Love can be a great thing,<lb />especially when it works for<lb />everyone involved. However, when<lb />things do not go as planned, both<lb /><lb />parties need to know the steps to<lb />calling it quits. Breaking up is dif-<lb />ferent with every couple, but the<lb />process is always the same"feel-<lb />ings are expressed and a settle-<lb />ment is reached. In some ways,<lb />Neon Bible seems less preachy.<lb /><lb />Listening to oKeep the Car<lb />Running? and oAntichrist Tele-<lb />vision Blues,? it really is hard<lb />to believe that these arenTt just<lb />Springsteen covers.<lb /><lb />The lyrics on this album really<lb />are reminiscent of Born To Run"<lb />songs that connect with the work-<lb />ing-class and those looking to<lb />escape the everyday life they live<lb />for something better. Structurally,<lb />some of the lyrics seemed a little<lb />forced for the sake of rhyme, but<lb />the strength in Win ButlerTs voice<lb />makes you not even realize it.<lb /><lb />Musically, theyTre right on<lb />target, too. An amazingly catchy<lb />rhythm section is the common<lb />thread on all of these songs, and<lb />itTs maybe the most important<lb />instrument here.<lb /><lb />Every song is held together<lb />with tight rhythms and even the<lb />subtle, distorted closing oMy Body<lb />is a Cage? manages to hit hard<lb />with the drums, which start out<lb />nearly electronic but end sound-<lb />ing like a militant death march.<lb /><lb />Even the albums first<lb />single"often considered by<lb />fans an albumsT worst song due<lb />to its commercial accessibil-<lb />ity"oIntervention? is a good<lb />song, and arguably the best track.<lb /><lb />One confusing thing about<lb />this album, however, is the deci-<lb />sion to redo their own song oNo<lb />Cars Go,? which appeared on their<lb />self-titled EP. While the song is an<lb />improvement from the original<lb />incarnation, I donTt know that I<lb /><lb />especially like the idea of such a,<lb /><lb />creative, young band with a small<lb />catalog re-doing a song of theirs.<lb /><lb />While some people may try to<lb />argue that Neon Bible just isnTt up<lb />to par with their full-length debut,<lb />Funeral, donTt believe them.<lb /><lb />Neon Bible manages to capture<lb />FuneralTs emotion with catchier<lb />tunes that are rhythmically tight.<lb />Even if youTre not a dancer, this<lb />album will make you want to.<lb /><lb />Somewhat surprisingly (to me,<lb />at least), Neon Bible debuted at<lb />number two on the U.S. Billboard<lb />charts. As with actors,<lb />the user can browse trivia ahd<lb />engage in discussion on the<lb />message boards.<lb /><lb />Movie pages also allow the<lb />curious to view goofs, produc-<lb />tion photos, box office numbers,<lb />production and release dates for<lb />future releases, filming locations<lb />and lists of everyone involved<lb />in production from director to<lb />best boy (the guy who keeps up<lb />electrical equipment).<lb /><lb />IMDB greets users on its<lb />homepage with daily entertain-<lb />ment news updates, as wells as<lb /><lb />news strictly limited to studios<lb />for the serious cinematic con-<lb />noisseur. Pirate<lb />alumni will most likely cite the<lb />teams and players of the late 1980s<lb />and early 1990s in any conversa-<lb />tion about past greats.<lb /><lb />The 1992-93 season was one of.<lb />the most shocking and exhilarat-<lb />ing in the history of ECU basket-<lb />ball, as a team that went 4-10 in<lb />the Colonial Athletic Association<lb />regular séason ran through the<lb /><lb />conferenceTs postseason tourna-<lb />ment and earned a berth in the<lb />NCAA tournament. ,<lb /><lb />Maybe the most shocking and<lb />exhilarating player to even put<lb />on an ECU jersey was Theodore<lb />oBlue? Edwards. Despite<lb />their losing record, the team is<lb />confident and prepared for their<lb />remaining nine regular season<lb />matches.<lb /><lb />The Pirates have only played<lb />one match at home thus far, but six<lb />of their remaining matches will be<lb />played in Greenville.<lb /><lb />Head Coach Shawn Heinchon<lb />is satisfied with his teams perfor-<lb />mance overall at this point in the<lb />season.<lb /><lb />oWe've done about as well as<lb />we could, we've had a little bit of<lb />adversity with some injuries,? said<lb />Heinchon. oThe front part of our<lb />schedule is more difficult than the<lb />back part of our schedule. We're<lb />right where I thought we'd be with<lb />the exception of one bad loss.?<lb /><lb />The outlook for-the rest of the<lb />season is positive considering that<lb />the majority of their remaining<lb />matches are at home. The Pirates<lb />defeated The Citadel in their one<lb />home-match thus far, and they are<lb />looking forward to their home<lb />stand to wind down the regular<lb />season. oWe like having the home<lb />crowd out here,? said freshmen<lb />Stephen Whitwell. oItTs a better<lb />atmosphere for us.?<lb /><lb />School in nearby Snow Hill. He<lb />was given the nickname because<lb />his sister saw him choke as a baby<lb />and turn blue.<lb /><lb />As a freshman in the 1986-<lb />87 season he showed his prolific<lb />scoring ability averaging 14 points<lb />per game. For a 64? guard he<lb />also displayed an uncanny knack<lb />for rebounding, averaging 5.6<lb />per game. What oBlue? lacked in<lb />height, he made up for in athleti-<lb /><lb />cism. Throughout his career with .<lb /><lb />the Pirates and in the NBA he<lb />was known for his slashing drives<lb />to the basket, aerial artistry, and<lb />jaw-dropping dunks.<lb /><lb />But his career took a detour<lb />between his freshman and sopho-<lb />more seasons. Edwards and sev-<lb />eral teammates were found guilty<lb /><lb />oItTs the best,? junior Hen-<lb />rique Viana said of playing in<lb />Greenville. oEspecially now that<lb />spring has started so the weather's<lb />a lot nicer. Our first and only home<lb />match we had so many people here,<lb />the feeling and the atmosphere<lb />was amazing. It was a beautiful day<lb />and we had all these people here<lb />watching us. It gave us so much<lb />confidence.?<lb /><lb />The Pirates difficult road<lb />schedule affects the team in many<lb />ways.<lb /><lb />oItTs really tough,? said Viana,<lb />oIt does influence us a lot because<lb />we donTt have people cheering for<lb />us, we're not used to playing there,<lb />and the weather, the courts, every-<lb />thing. You have to be tough, you<lb />just have to get used to it.?<lb /><lb />Over spring break the Pirates<lb />soundly defeated Coastal Carolina<lb />6-1 on the road, who had a 13-2<lb />record going into the match. The<lb />team traveled to Conway, S.C.<lb />three days in advance of the match<lb />to prepare for the Chanticleers,<lb />and the extra preparation paid<lb />off with a resounding victory. oIt<lb />was great, our confidence is as<lb />high as it can be,? said Viana. oWe<lb />beat them at home, the team did a<lb />great job supporting each other,<lb />spring break was a lot better with<lb />a win.<lb /><lb />The fact that the team arrived<lb />early to Coastal, which is located<lb />nine miles from Myrtle Beach, and<lb />spent time there was sure to have<lb />had a positive effect on the teams<lb />morale.<lb /><lb />a constant<lb /><lb />of breaking and entering, and<lb />he was subsequently suspended<lb />for the entire 1987-88 campaign.<lb />Not many college athletes today<lb />would be allowed back in school,<lb />much less back on a sports team<lb />after being convicted of a felony,<lb />but Blue was, and he provided<lb />the Pirates and their fans with an<lb />unforgettable season as a result.<lb />Blue's junior season in 1988-89<lb />was simply incredible statistically.<lb />He averaged 26.7 points per game,<lb />which was sixth best nationally.<lb />His 773 total points, 297 field<lb />goals, and 154 free throws made<lb />are each the most in a single seasonT<lb />in school history, and he also set<lb />a single season school record for<lb />three-point shooting percentage<lb />by connecting on 25 of 51 attempts<lb /><lb />oThat gives us confidence,?<lb />said freshman Stephen Whitwell.<lb />oEspecially since we're playing [at<lb />UNC Greensboro] and Sunday [at<lb />home versus College of Charles-<lb />ton]. <lb />PAGE B6<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN ¢ SPORTS<lb /><lb />Former ECU fullback TENNIS continues trom as<lb />sions NFL contract<lb /><lb />(AP)"Hoping to add a<lb />powerful lead blocker to their<lb />revamped backfield, the New York<lb />Giants signed Houston Texans<lb />three-year veteran fullback Vonta<lb />Leach to a restricted free agent<lb />offer sheet on Monday.<lb /><lb />The Texans will have seven<lb />days to match the four-year offer<lb />sheet, which is worth a total of $8<lb />million and includes $1.6 million<lb />in guarantees.<lb /><lb />If the Texans match the<lb />offer sheet, they will assume the<lb />terms of the deal that the Giants<lb />negotiated with Leach. If the<lb />Texans decline to match the offer<lb />sheet, Leach will move on to the<lb />Giants.<lb /><lb />Because he entered the NFL<lb />as an undrafted free agent in<lb />2004, and Houston made Leach<lb />the lowest qualifying offer for a<lb />restricted free agent, a one-year<lb />deal for $850,000, the Texans will<lb />receive no compensation from the<lb />Giants if they donTt match.<lb /><lb />Leach, 25, is a 250-pounder<lb />capable of clearing out linebackers<lb />and carving out holes for tailbacks<lb />running behind him. Heis also an<lb />improving pass protector.<lb /><lb />In three NFL seasons, Leach<lb />has yet to register a single rushing<lb />attempt and he has only 11 catches<lb />for 80 yards and one touchdown<lb />in 34 appearances, including 10<lb />starts. His value, though, isnTt<lb />in touching the ball as much<lb />as it is colliding with would-be<lb />tacklers. It is assumed that, if<lb />the Giants acquire him, he will<lb />replace incumbent Jim Finn.<lb /><lb />Few teams carry two fullbacks<lb />on their roster and Leach is much<lb />stronger and five years younger<lb /><lb />than Finn, a seven-year veteran.<lb /><lb />With the retirement of Tiki<lb />Barber at the end of the 2006<lb />season, the Giants will go into<lb />2007 with a new starting tailback,<lb />projected to be two-year veteran<lb />Brandon Jacobs. The Giants also<lb />acquired veteran tailback Reuben<lb />Droughns in a trade with Cleve-<lb />land last week.<lb /><lb />Leach entered the league .<lb /><lb />with Green Bay in 2004 as an<lb />undrafted free agent. The former<lb />ECU standout played two sea-<lb />sons with the Packers, then was<lb />released last summer and signed<lb />by Houston, where he split time<lb />with Jameel Cook.<lb /><lb />The Texans, who value Leach<lb />and covet his toughness, probably<lb />will take the full seven days to<lb />deliberate over the offer sheet.<lb /><lb />So far, three restricted free<lb />agents have switched teams<lb />already during the signing period.<lb />One restricted free agent, wide<lb />receiver Wes Welker, was actu-<lb />ally traded from Miami to New<lb />England. Last week, the Cincin-<lb />nati Bengals declined to match a<lb />four-year offer sheet that defen-<lb />sive tackle Shaun Smith signed<lb />with the Cleveland Browns. And<lb />the Dallas Cowboys passed on an<lb />offer sheet that linebacker Ryan<lb />Fowler signed with the Tennes-<lb />see Titans.<lb /><lb />Securing the services of<lb />restricted free agents historically<lb />has proven a difficult undertaking<lb />with the current system. " 3:00 A.M. Students are behaving<lb />in a very unruly manner -- yelling and singing loudly, interfering with the bus driver,<lb />and pushing and shoving in the aisles. It appears that alcohol abuse is at the root<lb />of this situation. Obviously, any of the behaviors identified threaten the safety of<lb />all students riding in the vehicle, as well as other vehicles and pedestrians.<lb /><lb />Beginning the Thursday after Spring Break, we will be placing police officers on<lb />our buses during the hours noted. We will also be posting and distributing our<lb />Code of Conduct for appropriate behavior on our student transit buses. Those<lb />students who continue to behave inappropriately will be dealt with through "<lb />appropriate legal processes and channels.<lb /><lb />But the real responsibility in this situation lies with those students who are taking<lb />advantage of the services provided by our transit system. We need to have you<lb />begin to set good models for appropriate behavior and raise the bar for conduct<lb /><lb />on our buses.<lb /><lb />So, as you return to campus and reflect on past experiences while riding on student<lb />transit buses, I ask that you help us provide safe, reliable transportation to all of<lb />those who need it. We will not continue to tolerate past behaviors that interfere<lb />with the safety of the riders. We hope that we can count on your cooperation.<lb /><lb />Sincerely yours, "<lb /><lb />Marilyn A. Sheerer, PhD<lb /><lb />Vice Chancellor<lb /><lb />Division of Student life<lb /><lb /></p>
