City attorney<lb />Dave Holec said that the owners<lb />had been notified of the violations<lb />and had not responded to several<lb />citations. Four of the five suits<lb />involve Tim Ferruzzi, Ann Nunez,<lb />David Renn and Rebecca Renn,<lb />though the names vary in order<lb />on the ownersT deeds.<lb /><lb />A fifth lawsuit has been filed<lb />against Vance Harper Jones.<lb /><lb />Merrill Flood, head of the<lb />community development depart-<lb />ment, said that there is a differ-<lb />ence between these residences and<lb />large apartment complexes such<lb />as North Campus Crossing that<lb />allow more than three non-related<lb />roommates.<lb /><lb />He said that the homes in<lb />question are in regular residential<lb />neighborhoods while the large<lb />apartment complexes meet land<lb />use intensive dormitory stan-<lb />dards.<lb /><lb />oThe developers of theses<lb />places have to get special permits,?<lb />Flood said.<lb /><lb />During his 10 years as city<lb /><lb />attorney, Holec did not recall a<lb />time when citations did not prompt<lb />the property owners to fix the<lb />problems and keep the violations<lb />from turning into a lawsuit.<lb />oSeveral citations were issued<lb />over several months,? Holec said.<lb />Fayetteville attorney Neil<lb />Yarborough has been hired by<lb /><lb />Ferruzzi.<lb /><lb />More than three unrelated roommates live in a residentially<lb /><lb />ec. 58 :<lb /><lb />He said that the city is choos-<lb />ing to sue his client rather than<lb />come after the students respon-<lb />sible and that the suit is a viola-<lb />tion of FerruzziTs first amendment<lb />rights.<lb /><lb />oMy client is not going to<lb />do bed checks on the people in<lb /><lb />see ROOMMATES page A2<lb /><lb />Dead Week survey seeks<lb />more students opinions<lb /><lb />SGA pushes for less<lb />stressful week before<lb />finals<lb /><lb />ALYCIA WENDT<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />TheStudent Government Asso-<lb />ciation is promoting the idea of a<lb />dead week to the ECU community.<lb /><lb />If Dead Week is passed, it<lb />will offer students a free week<lb />before finals without any<lb />tests, quizzes or major assign-<lb />ments during the last week of<lb />instruction for each semester.<lb /><lb />For undergraduates only, the<lb />week will not entail any major<lb />examinations in classes, excluding<lb />skills, laboratory or clinical finals.<lb /><lb />Term papers due during Dead<lb /><lb />Week would need to be assignedT<lb /><lb />T in writing to students at the<lb />beginning of the semester. By<lb />midpoint in the semester, students<lb />would need to have received com-<lb /><lb />' plete written instructions for all<lb />term papers.<lb /><lb />oYou canTt take back failing<lb />a class or an exam, so we should<lb />have time to prepare ourselves<lb />and focus on our academics,? said<lb /><lb />SGA president M. There, the<lb />panel addressed the universityTs<lb />motto: oServire,? Latin for oto<lb /><lb />Dead Week would still fall<lb />under the 15 weeks of instruc-<lb />tion, and all classes would meet<lb />as scheduled.<lb /><lb />Classes during Dead Week are<lb />intended for teachers to have strict<lb />student-teacher interaction time.<lb /><lb />Dead Week has been a work<lb />in progress for years. SGA<lb />has done extensive research<lb />on students during exam time<lb />and how other colleges pre-<lb />pare for their final exams.<lb /><lb />Once the decision is final, it<lb />will take three years until the<lb />final change occurs. Any change<lb />made to the academic calendar<lb />takes three years to take place.<lb /><lb />North Carolina State Univer-<lb />sity currently has a Dead Week and<lb />the University of North Carolina<lb />at Chapel Hill is looking into one.<lb /><lb />oI think a Dead Week would<lb />help us study more and relax too.<lb />I hate finals because I just cram,?<lb />said sophomore communications<lb />major, Austin Briggman III.<lb /><lb />Last year, an online survey<lb />was posted for studentTs opin-<lb />ion on Dead Week. This survey<lb />did not get enough responses<lb />or strong enough votes to<lb />proceed further with it.<lb /><lb />oI want.to encourage students<lb /><lb />BUTLER<lb /><lb />Members of the panel, including former Governor James B. Hunt, discussed ECUTs history of service.<lb /><lb />serve,? which is also this yearTs<lb />centennial theme of service.<lb />James B. Hunt Jr., ECTC alumni<lb />and former governor of North<lb />Carolina challenged ECU to help<lb />to improve life in eastern North<lb />Carolina"a region deserving of<lb />service, as it trails the rest of the<lb />state in economics, health and<lb />education<lb /><lb />oI hope you will have the goal<lb />that the great disparity in eastern<lb />North Carolina will be elimi-<lb /><lb />to get involved with SGA for the<lb />survey or any other project. We<lb />really need student feedback,? said<lb />Student Government Secretary<lb />Keri Brockett.<lb /><lb />This year all branches of SGA<lb />were asked to participate in the<lb />survey. The survey was also more<lb />comprehensive than last year. It<lb />consists of seven questions that<lb />relate to a studentTs personal<lb />opinion on Dead Week.<lb /><lb />Once the results of the survey<lb />are finished, SGA will propose<lb />the survey to the senate and the<lb />calendar committee with the<lb />results.<lb /><lb />oWhether you believe in Dead<lb />Week or not, take the survey and<lb />express your beliefs on it,? said<lb />SGA Director of Academic Affairs<lb />C. James Wagner.<lb /><lb />If SGA does not get enough<lb />feedback on these surveys, there<lb />will not be accurate results.<lb /><lb />oWe want to make the efforts<lb />to do what students want,? said<lb />Brockett.<lb /><lb />The Dead Week survey can<lb />be found online atecu.edu/cs-stu-<lb />dentlife/sga/index.cfm.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />news@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />nated, particularly through the<lb />leadership of this university,? said<lb />Hunt. oI believe this university<lb />should do it and is more capable<lb />of doing it more than any other<lb />university.?<lb /><lb />oYou've got a great history.<lb />Really be aware of how great<lb />the needs are... people expect<lb />you to do a lot,? said Hunt.<lb />The historic four-term gov-<lb />ernor was one of four panel-<lb />ists at the event, which dis-<lb /><lb />zoned home are in v<lb /><lb />jiolation of a City of Greenville code.<lb /><lb />Fire in storm drain<lb />creates need for detour<lb /><lb />Photo by Zach Sirkin |<lb /><lb />The Greenville Fire Department extinguishes the remains of a small fire.<lb /><lb />Steam line, drain area<lb />undamaged despite<lb />smoke<lb /><lb />STAFF REPORT<lb /><lb />At approximately 6 p.m.<lb />Monday evening, a fire in the<lb />storm drain near West End caused<lb />students en route to the dining<lb />hall or other destinations on Fac-<lb />ulty Way to have to take a slight<lb />detour.<lb /><lb />According to ECU police Divi-<lb />sion Commander Major Frank<lb />Knight, leaves which had been<lb />blown into the steam line by<lb />Faculty Way and Dowell Way<lb />caught fire.<lb /><lb />The cause for the fire is<lb /><lb />cussed ECUTs history of service.<lb />One of the four questions of the<lb />event led panelists to ruminate on<lb />what motivates people to serve.<lb />oTo serve is_a verb. ItTs<lb />love in action,? said ECU<lb />alumna Ruth Shaw, senior<lb />executive at Duke Energy.<lb />According to Shaw, since the Gen-<lb />eral Assembly first created ECU<lb />in 1907, improving life in east-<lb />ern North Carolina has always<lb />been one of ECUTs missions.<lb />oThe desire and appreciation<lb />for selfless giving, I believe, has<lb />to be taught, and it has to be<lb />learned,? said chief external affairs<lb />officer for University Health Sys-<lb />tems of Eastern Carolina and<lb />ECU trustee member Joel Butler.<lb />Forum moderator, Janice<lb />Faulkner, ECU graduate and<lb />former North Carolina Secretary<lb />of State, asked the panel how<lb />ECU could continue to promote<lb />service in its second century.<lb />Hunt suggested student service<lb />requirements for graduation.<lb />oThe university needs to be<lb />committed to this community,?<lb />said Hunt. He proposed to Chan-<lb />cellor Ballard in the audience<lb />' that perhaps students ocanTt<lb />graduate unless they have hours<lb />volunteering? or omaybe giving<lb /><lb />unknown.<lb /><lb />oIt could be a cigarette fell<lb />down into the area or some other<lb />item [did],? said Major Knight.<lb /><lb />According to Major Knight,<lb />there was no damage to the steam<lb />line or any damage inside the<lb />storm drain area.<lb /><lb />oThe fire department... extin-<lb />guished the smoldering remains of<lb />what was a small leaf fire,? he said.<lb /><lb />Although ECU police did set<lb />up a perimeter around the storm<lb />drain, and redirected traffic so<lb />emergency vehicles could easily<lb />access the area, West End and<lb />other surrounding areas did not<lb />close down for any period of time.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />news@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />on Service<lb /><lb />college credit? for serving the<lb />community.<lb /><lb />oWe're trying to prepare and<lb />develop a society of giving and<lb />useful people,? Sports Illustratedran a story<lb /><lb />titled, oNatural Disaster,? mocking the attendance 8<lb /><lb />of the Hurricanes.<lb />This all changed in the 2000 " 2001 season. The<lb />Hurricanes grabbed the last playoff spot, leading<lb /><lb />them to face off the defending Stanley Cup champi- ~<lb /><lb />ons, the New Jersey Devils. Though the Hurricanes<lb />lost to the Devils, the sellout crowd provided a stand-<lb />ing ovation for the players, showing signs that the<lb />city can support a hockey team.<lb /><lb />Last year, in the 2005 " 2006 season, the Hur-<lb />ricanes did the improbable and took the Stanley Cup.<lb />During this playoffrun, decimal readings of the RBC<lb />Center crowd showed well above the threshold of<lb />pain, including a high of 133.4 dB.<lb /><lb />Today, out of the 30'teams in the National Hockey<lb />League, the Hurricanes are right in the middle,<lb />attendance wise, holding a firm grip on 15th place.<lb />They frequently sell out games, and have an aver-<lb />age attendance of a little more of 17,000. And while<lb />critics still whine, questioning why a defending<lb />champion team canTt sell out more games, thereTs<lb />no question that the Carolinas have warmed up to<lb />hockey. If only the same support was shown for our<lb />ECU hockey team.<lb /><lb />This year, in only its second season as a club, the<lb /><lb />earning them the top spot in the Blue Ridge Hockey<lb /><lb />Club Tournament. Yet, when it comes to coverage, -<lb /><lb />a Pirate loss at any other sport gets more coverage Sin the history of the world.<lb /><lb />than a huge Pirate hockey victory.<lb /><lb />Obviously, any Pirate sports team has its dif-<lb />ficulties, but when one team has huge success while<lb />others may be struggling, please give credit where<lb />credit is due.<lb /><lb />Wikipedia, a<lb /><lb />reliable source<lb /><lb />Wait, scratch that; Wikipedia is not a.<lb /><lb />reliable source<lb /><lb />YAZID FINN<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />When it comes to pop culture, sports or finding<lb />a recipe for great chicken parmesan, the InternetTs<lb />limitless ability to find information is a godsend.<lb />However, when it comes to researching journals and<lb /><lb />sources for your average English class, resources<lb /><lb />drop exponentially.<lb /><lb />As our level of education increases, so does the<lb />strictness of works cited and the reliability of our<lb />sources. Gone are the days when teachers would<lb />accept ogoogle.com? at the conclusion of a somewhat<lb />grammatically correct paper. But while I sometimes<lb /><lb />long for the laid back high school projects, I can.<lb /><lb />see where our current professors are coming from.<lb /><lb />This follows in my agreement on their view of |<lb /><lb />Wikipedia.<lb /><lb />call to arms against African Elephants, the siteTs<lb />vulnerability was ever present as users changed<lb />articleTs information on a continuous minor scale.<lb />But in addition to the occasional pranks that Wiki-<lb />pedia experiences, no one who frequents the site can<lb />exercise an unbiased, neutral stance on everything<lb />known to man. This is proven by typing searches<lb />for any common controversial subject. Results for<lb />Evolution, George Bush, Islam, African elephants,<lb />Palestine and abortion are commonly semi-locked<lb /><lb />and restricted articles in which only senior members<lb /><lb />may edit the information.<lb /><lb />As you might expect, someone somewhere will<lb />differ from your point of view and Wikipedia helps<lb />to concentrate every debatable subject within an<lb />effortless reach. Some forget that Wikipedia articles must also<lb />cite their own sources, all of which are located at the<lb /><lb />bottom of every entry (unless the article is lacking -<lb /><lb />citations, in which case Wikipedia makes sure to<lb />announce this). Simply taking an additional moment<lb />of your time to follow up on these sources may lead<lb /><lb />you to safe ground, with professors none the wiser.<lb /><lb />With a valid and sound source for your essay or jour-<lb />nal, Wikipedia will never cross anyoneTs mind.<lb />Now if you will excuse me, I am off to alter<lb /><lb />ECUTs entry. He was quoted<lb />as saying, oHave you got anywhere with McDonaldTs?<lb />Have you tried getting it banned? ThatTs the key.?<lb /><lb />As usual, by the next morning, the story was<lb />all over the news and people across the world were<lb />judging Charles for what he said. Nick Hindle, a<lb />spokesperson from McDonaldTs, has said that, othis<lb />appears to be an off-the-cuff remark.?<lb /><lb />His description of CharlesT words, as being ooff-<lb />the-cuff? is what really stuck out when I read about<lb />what had happened.<lb /><lb />When you look at news as not just a way to gain<lb />knowledge about current events, but also a way to<lb />gain knowledge about yourself, then maybe there is<lb />something else to learn from this story.<lb /><lb />I know this will be hard for those pragmatic, utili-<lb />tarian thinkers out there, but humor me for.a minute.<lb />After reading all of the reports and varying opinions<lb />about what Prince Charles said, all I could think about<lb /><lb />was how one manTs words had caused such a stir and<lb /><lb />how what happened to him has probably happened<lb />to all of us, just on a much smaller level.<lb /><lb />How many times have we spoken words that we<lb />regret? How many times do we say things we do not<lb />mean? I know it happens to some more than others,<lb />but I am sure that we all have said things that we<lb />wish we could now take back.<lb /><lb />. Possibly. some of you are thinking that you regret<lb />nothing. That is certainly your prerogative and I am<lb />not telling you differently. The point I really want to<lb />stress here is this"our words define who we are.<lb /><lb />I think sometimes people forget this or maybe<lb />they do not realize just how important their words<lb />can be. Everything we say is a reflection of who we<lb />are and it greatly affects how others view us.<lb /><lb />Of course, when we make off-the-cuff remarks,<lb />it is unlikely they will be on CNN the next day, but<lb />our co-workers, our classmates and even our friends<lb />might hear them.<lb /><lb />This may sound too much like a Sunday school<lb />lesson, but I will say it anyways. We must think before<lb />we speak. We spend all day surrounded by our profes-<lb />sors and our peers, and sometimes our words may be<lb />all we have to distinguish who we are.<lb /><lb />Some of the greatest and some of the worst people<lb />in history are remembered by what they said, so take<lb />heed, andTdecide how your words will defipe you.<lb /><lb />OKaY, CLASS... Radio, television,<lb />film, cable and other media outlets<lb />in the industry require broadcast-<lb />ers with the appropriate skills and<lb />knowledge to relay local, national<lb />and international information effec-<lb />tively. The members of the National<lb />Broadcasting Society reflect the<lb />diversity of the business.<lb /><lb />Dr. Carey Martin, associate<lb />professor for the School of Commu-<lb />nication and the National Broadcast<lb />Society advisor spoke of the benefits<lb />in joining NBS.<lb /><lb />_ oNBS is an excellent opportu-<lb />nity for communication students<lb />and anyone who is interested in the<lb />world of television to be exposed to<lb /><lb />the world of professionals at the local<lb />and national level.<lb /><lb />oIn the last year, student lead-<lb />ership within [NBS] has been<lb />wonderful. Students gain valuable<lb />skills that can prove vital long<lb />after graduation.<lb /><lb />oIt gives the media produc-<lb />tion and broadcasting students a<lb />chance to have a club. We've had<lb />meteorologists, anchors, producers<lb />and reporters,? Grantham said.<lb /><lb />According to their Web site, the<lb />National Broadcasting Society goes<lb />beyond the classroom to prepare col-<lb />lege students and entry-level profes-<lb />sionals for careers in the electronic<lb />media. This mission is accomplished<lb />through six areas of focus, which<lb /><lb />include promoting excellence, pro-<lb />viding exposure to the electronic<lb />industry, providing opportunities for<lb />ethical and responsible leadership,<lb />providing advance media programs,<lb />assistance in career preparations and<lb />encouraging engagement in com-<lb />munity service projects. :<lb /><lb />The ECU chapter of NBS wa<lb />created in 2002. It could<lb />also be defined as the most stressful<lb />time of the semester (besides finals<lb />week of course).<lb /><lb />It is for this very reason that the<lb />academic departments hope each<lb />year to provide not only the basic,<lb />somewhat tedious classes with more<lb />specialized and relevant classes. By<lb />doing so, they allow the students<lb />who willingly wade through the<lb />basic and introductory classes to<lb />learn about the area of study in a<lb />more interesting and personally<lb />satisfying way.<lb /><lb />For instance, those that have<lb />made it through the freshman com-<lb />position courses have the opportu-<lb />nity to use those skills to learn more<lb /><lb />about the world in a unique way.<lb /><lb />This fall, Dr. Tom Douglass,<lb />professor of English, will be teach-<lb />ing ENGL 3490, a course titled<lb />Satire. Islam is gradually<lb />becoming a more familiar sub-<lb />ject in the world today, and is<lb />always gaining recognition through<lb />popular media.<lb /><lb />This class will examine<lb />the history and beliefs of Mus-<lb />lims, and will give students the<lb />opportunity to understand the<lb />traditions and concepts of this<lb />increasingly popular, but relatively<lb /><lb />Tyrre<lb /><lb />Photo by L<lb /><lb />evinia<lb /><lb />unknown, religion.<lb /><lb />Those wishing to take a break<lb />from these intellectually challeng-<lb />ing courses can always check out<lb />the different sections of EXSS 1000,<lb />which provide severai interesting<lb />ways of keeping active during a<lb />busy semester. <lb />WEDNESDAY MARCH 21, 2007<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN ¢ SPORTS<lb /><lb />PAGE A7<lb /><lb />PLAYER OF THE YEAR MOST IMPROVED PIRATE<lb /><lb />| Basketball Championship. Mills<lb /><lb />BASEBALL continued from A6<lb /><lb />MVP OF THE SEASON<lb /><lb />CHERIE MILLS, SR LACOYA TERRY, SO<lb /><lb />:<lb /><lb />5-10 HEPHZIBAH, G.A. _<lb /><lb />Terry came on strong towards<lb />the end of the season, and is the<lb />main reason for the Pirates 10-<lb />game winning streak to close out<lb />the regular season and win the C-<lb />USA tournament. Last season she<lb />started in only 13 games, averag-<lb />ing 23.5 minutes per game. This<lb />season Terry grew into her role as<lb />a swing guard and playmaker on<lb />the offensive end. She started in 31<lb />out of 32 games, averaging 34.4<lb />minutes per game. Her increased<lb />responsibility running the offense<lb />has taken some pressure off of<lb />former C-USA Freshman of the<lb />Year Jasmine Young. With Terry<lb />and Young working together<lb />well in the flow of a high-octane<lb />offense, the Pirates were able to<lb />out run and out score opponents |,<lb />during the 10-game winning<lb />streak. Terry was also honored<lb />as the C-USA tournament MVP.<lb />She averaged 20 points per game,<lb />to go along with 4.3 assists per<lb /><lb />6-4 AYDEN, N.C.<lb />Mils led the team in seven<lb />different areas, including average<lb />rebounds per game (7.3), points<lb />per game (14.9), total blocks (33)<lb />and field goal percentage (484)<lb />going into the NCAA WomenTs<lb /><lb />provided a presence in the post<lb />for a team lacking in size and<lb />depth. She fouled out of only<lb />one game all season, proving<lb />to be a strong reliability. Mills<lb />was one of two seniors on the<lb />team this year, and brought a<lb />wealth of experience to a young<lb />team short on leadership. Her<lb />maturity proved to be vital in the<lb />Pirates run through the C-USA<lb />tournament and into the NCAA<lb />tournament. In three games in<lb />the C-USA tournament, Mills<lb />averaged nearly a double-double<lb />(12.3 points per game and 9.3<lb />rebounds per game). Her pres-<lb />ence will be sorely missed next<lb />season as the Pirates look to<lb />contend their C-USA title.<lb /><lb />igame in the tournament.<lb /><lb />: Dedicated EC Bus<lb />_« Utilities Included: Wat<lb /><lb />* Furnished & Unfurnished Units Available "<lb /><lb />* Several oloor Plans to Choose !<lb /><lb />university manor<lb />3535 E. 10th St | 252.758.5551<lb /><lb />WWw.collerenarkweb.com<lb /><lb />Sixteen campuses, one week, one goal of serving our<lb />communities. Last season, Fullerton<lb />dominated ECU, outscoring the<lb />Pirates 21-1 in three games.<lb /><lb />oIt looked like the roles were<lb />reversed... they played like we<lb />did against them last year and we<lb />couldnTt handle it,? Horton said.<lb /><lb />Pitching has been the key to<lb />ECUTs recent success as the team<lb />has yet to allow more than five<lb />runs since it was swept by UCLA<lb />in mid-February. The PiratesT<lb />Friday starter T.J. Hose has been<lb />the personification of the ECU<lb />turnaround as he has drastically<lb />improved after a rough start to<lb />the season. Hose has won all four<lb />of his last starts since starting<lb />the season 0-2. In his four wins,<lb />Hose has allowed only seven runs<lb />and struck out 24 in 27 innings<lb />pitched.<lb /><lb />Hose upstaged FullertonTs All-<lb />American pitcher Wes Roemer on<lb />March 9.as he allowed only three<lb />hits and struck out six in seven<lb />innings.<lb /><lb />oThat was probably the best<lb />performance heTs had since ITve<lb />been at East Carolina,? said ECU<lb />Head-Coach Billy Godwin after<lb />the win. oIt was a great effort on<lb />his part and ITm really proud of<lb />what he did.?<lb /><lb />Pirate leadoff-man Harrison<lb />Eldridge said that HoseTs per-<lb />formance helped give the Pirate<lb />hitters the inspiration to not back<lb />down from the Titans.<lb /><lb />oHe came in, wasnTt scared at<lb />all and got the job done like we<lb />knew he would,? said Eldridge.<lb />oYou canTt really ask for much<lb />more than that on a Friday night<lb />against the No. 7 team in the<lb />country.?<lb /><lb />ECUTs bullpen has also done<lb />a great job of closing the door,<lb />something it struggled with at<lb />times early in the season. Since<lb />the PiratesT 2-0 loss to Campbell<lb />on Feb. 21, closer Shane Mathews<lb />has allowed only one run in 11<lb />relief appearances. Mathews has<lb />recorded six saves and one win in<lb />the stretch, and has yet to allow.<lb />a run in his last 8 2/3 innings<lb />pitched.<lb /><lb />oOur bullpen has been great,?<lb />Godwin said. oI canTt tell you<lb />enough how great of a feeling<lb />it is to turn it over to those<lb />guys... our starting pitch-<lb />ers have a lot of confidence in<lb />the guys coming him behind<lb />them too.?<lb /><lb />ECU starts conference<lb />play this weekend as it hosts<lb />Memphis, which was picked<lb />to finish: one spot ahead of the<lb />Pirates in Conference. USA. The<lb />Pirates will try to carry the<lb />momentum they gained<lb />from their osecond season?<lb />into conference play, which might<lb />be fitting to label their othird<lb />season.?<lb /><lb />oWe talk a lot about peaks<lb />and valleys and we donTt want to<lb />get too high or too low,? " 3:00 A.M. Students are behaving<lb />in a very unruly manner -- yelling and singing loudly, interfering with the bus driver,<lb />and pushing and shoving in the aisles. It appears that alcohol abuse is at the root "<lb />of this situation. Obviously, any of the behaviors identified threaten the safety of<lb />all students riding in the vehicle, as well as other vehicles and pedestrians.<lb /><lb />Beginning the Thursday after Spring Break, we will be placing police officers on<lb />our buses during the hours noted. We will also be posting and distributing our<lb /><lb />Code of Conduct for appropriate behavior on our student transit buses. Those<lb />students who continue to behave inappropriately will be dealt with through<lb /><lb />appropriate legal processes and channels.<lb /><lb />But the real responsibility in this situation lies with those students who are taking<lb />advantage of the services provided by our transit system. We need to have you<lb />begin to set good models for appropriate behavior and raise the bar for conduct<lb /><lb />on our buses.<lb /><lb />So, as you return to campus and reflect on past experiences while riding on student<lb />transit buses, I ask that you help us provide safe, reliable transportation to all of<lb />those who need it. We will not continue to tolerate past behaviors that interfere<lb />with the safety of the riders. We hope that we can count on your cooperation.<lb /><lb />Sincerely yours,<lb /><lb />Marilyn A.
