As a part of ECUTs<lb />Pirate Fest celebration, the ECU<lb />Alumni Association and the<lb />Greenville Chamber of Com-<lb />merce have teamed up to bring<lb />ECU its very own version of these<lb />decorated statues.<lb /><lb />Many cities around the United<lb />States have chosen to embellish<lb />animals as a way to raise money<lb />for charity, or to celebrate special<lb />events in their hometowns. Run-<lb />ning with these ideas, various<lb />members of the ECU Centennial<lb />Planning Task Force came up<lb />with a public art project that they<lb />felt would honor ECUTs 100th<lb />birthday and at the same time<lb />reflect Pirate Pride.<lb /><lb />The task force decided that<lb />instead of bringing in statues of<lb /><lb />animals, which may not relate to |<lb /><lb />the ECU pirate theme, they would<lb />hold a contest asking artists to<lb />submit sketches of pirates.<lb /><lb />Receiving upwards of 60<lb />entries, the university selected<lb />Glen EureTs sketch of a pirate<lb />holding a sword and wearing an<lb />eye patch. Eure is a 75-year-old<lb />ECU art school alumni and well-<lb />known Nags Head artist.<lb /><lb />EureTs drawings of a pirate<lb />from the front, back and side<lb />angles have been sent to oCow-<lb />painters,? the Chicago based<lb />company responsible for creat-<lb />ing the molds for more than 160<lb />exhibitions of this kind around<lb />the United States.<lb /><lb />oWe did a call for entries and<lb />now we are having a prototype<lb />made by Cowpainters in Chicago,<lb />Ill., they should arrive as white<lb />fiberglass in their natural state,<lb />from there weTll have artists and<lb />sponsors create the next leg of<lb />this project,? said Carolyn Brown<lb />Thompson, coordinator of Cen-<lb /><lb />see STATUES page A2<lb /><lb />irkin<lb /><lb />GB<lb /><lb />Photo by Zach<lb /><lb />Kinston and they have created<lb />a Pepsi can with ECU centen-<lb />nial in mind,? said Clough.<lb />Another highlight of the event<lb />will be Magnolia Belles making<lb />their debut. The Belles are an<lb />oall-female a cappella group spon-<lb />sored by the Alumni Associa-<lb />tion,? said Clough. oThey will be<lb />singing the national anthem<lb />and happy birthday to ECU.?<lb />oThe birthday party was amazing<lb />last year, and I canTt wait to see the<lb />alumni association top if off this<lb />year, it should be a great event and<lb />tons of fun,? said Student Union<lb />Vice President Casey Verburg.<lb /><lb />The rain site for the celebra-<lb />tion is inside Mendenhall.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />news@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Sod iS placed at Wright Circle. The senior class<lb />president Brandy Sherrer came into<lb />office after Nadia Payne resigned.<lb /><lb />oMy goals for the senior class<lb />are to prepare for the senior class<lb />gift, which is a benefit dinner<lb />which will be at the end of April.<lb />I also want to raise money for the<lb />senior scholarship endowment. I<lb />want to get a professor from every<lb />department to nominate a student<lb />for the outstanding student award,<lb />which will be given out at the end of<lb />the semester to acknowledge their<lb />achievements. Another one of my<lb />goals is to work with the Alumni<lb />Association and keep in contact<lb />with them,? said Sherrer.<lb /><lb />When asked what she does<lb />that directly benefits the senior<lb />class she stated, oI do workshops<lb />to help interested seniors with dif-<lb />ferent ideas, for example, financing<lb />and budgets, networking, Just real<lb />worldT things. I just want to be<lb />visible to the senior class at school<lb />events, like games. I am also open<lb />to student ideas to take them to the<lb />higher officials.?<lb /><lb />Eka Isangedighi, senior<lb />family and community. ser-<lb />vices major, expressed her feel-<lb />ings about being invited to<lb />meet her senior class president.<lb /><lb />oT do not feel like she has done<lb />anything for our class. The semes-<lb />ter is almost over and she Just now<lb />sent an e-mail about coming out to<lb />meet her; we are about to graduate,<lb />why should we care to meet her<lb />now?? said Isangedighi.<lb /><lb />Kelly Shelton is the junior class<lb />president for the 2006 " 2007 aca-<lb />demic year.<lb /><lb />oMy main goal is the Success<lb />for Life Workshop. They include<lb />two real world workshops. One is<lb />in March, which is the networking<lb />workshop, and the other one is in<lb />April, which is the finances work-<lb />shop,? said Shelton.<lb /><lb />When asked what she does<lb />on campus to help the junior<lb />class she stated, oThe Success<lb />for Life workshops and trying<lb />to build up SGA and get more<lb />student involvement especially<lb />between the junior class and SGA.?<lb /><lb />Sherrer and Shelton both have<lb />plans to work for Service N.C.,<lb />which is a week long event that<lb />competes against other universities<lb />doing different service projects.<lb /><lb />Since the sophomore class<lb />president resigned, SGA has been<lb />looking for an officer to fill the<lb />position. For another: president<lb />to be selected, the SGA president<lb />has to select two names and do<lb />background checks for eligibility.<lb />Next, the student Congress votes<lb />to elect someone.<lb /><lb />The freshman class president<lb />for the 2006 " 2007 academic year<lb />is Patrick Sebastian.<lb /><lb />oMy goal for this year is to build<lb />unity within the freshman class, I<lb />did this by supporting the Support<lb />for Life Workshops. I also go to<lb />events to put a face with the officer.<lb />They elected us to work for them<lb />and we just want to serve every<lb /><lb />When asked what he thinks is<lb />most important in being the fresh-<lb />man class officer, Sebastian stated,<lb />oHaving good communication. I<lb />get about 10 to 15 e-mails a week,<lb />with people asking me questions. I<lb />answer them all within a few days.<lb />You have to be on their level. ITm<lb />just like them. ITm no more expe-<lb />rienced than they are, I am right<lb />there with them.?<lb /><lb />Brent Richards, freshman<lb />sports studies major, said he was<lb />unsure what his class officer did.<lb /><lb />oI have seen him around<lb />a few times but I never knew<lb />exactly what he does for the fresh-<lb />man class. I know that there are<lb />always a lot of activities being<lb />held on campus but I usually<lb />donTt know which organization<lb />is sponsoring it,? said Richards.<lb /><lb />Although Richards was unsure<lb />of his class presidentTs role, other<lb />freshmen feel differently.<lb /><lb />oI really appreciate the effort<lb />of the class officers to com-<lb />municate with students,? said<lb />freshman, hospitality man-<lb />agement major, Taylor Suttle.<lb /><lb />SGA members are seeking<lb />individuals to serve on the class<lb />councils for every class, with the<lb />exception of the freshman coun-<lb />cil, which is already full. The<lb />class council is a vital compo-<lb />nent since they help improve the<lb />lines of communication between<lb />the SGA and the student body.<lb /><lb />Michael Harris, freshman coun-<lb />cilman, stressed the importance of<lb />getting involved on campus early on.<lb /><lb />oIt is extremely important for<lb />freshman to get involved their first two<lb />years of college because it helps them to<lb />become aware of their surroundings.?<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />news@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Tax tips<lb />for college<lb />students<lb /><lb />Receive a refund in<lb />less than 10 days<lb /><lb />CARMIN BLACK<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />The two most popular meth-<lb />ods for filing taxes are e-filing or<lb />a newer service called Free File.<lb />Free file was first introduced in<lb />2003; itTs a method available for<lb />any taxpayer who earns less than<lb />$52,000 a year. In fact, last year<lb />alone more than 72 percent of tax-<lb />payers qualified for this service.<lb /><lb />One of the main reasons Free<lb />File has become so popular is that<lb />by using this service, taxpayers<lb />can receive their refund within as<lb />little as 10 days.<lb /><lb />oMost students should really<lb />consider e-file, because if they<lb />have all their information together<lb />e-file is a great way to do their<lb />taxes, it will walk them through<lb />the form and if they qualify they<lb />could get their refund within 10<lb />days,? said Mark Hanson, field<lb />media relations specialist for the<lb />Internal Revenue Service.<lb /><lb />Hanson made it clear that<lb />even though e-filing is the easiest<lb />option, anyone using their com-<lb />puter needs to be especially careful<lb />when they are when punching in<lb />personal information.<lb /><lb />Hanson Tsaid anyone filing<lb />needs to pay special attention to<lb />things like typing in the correct<lb />digits on social security numbers,<lb />putting in a new last name when<lb />married or rechecking any calcula-<lb />tions for simple math errors.<lb /><lb />Besides double-checking for<lb />mistakes, many students who<lb />are filing for the first time say<lb />they would prefer to use the<lb />Internet but are worried that their<lb />personal information may not be<lb /><lb />| totally secure.<lb /><lb />oL know that filing online is<lb />the easiest option, but the last<lb />thing I need is to fall prey to<lb />some ridiculous tax scam,? said<lb />Cameron Todd, junior elementary<lb />education major.<lb /><lb />What Todd is actually refer-<lb />ring to is something Mark Hanson<lb />calls a ophishing scam.? A phishing<lb />scam is when a person who filed<lb />their taxes online gets an e-mail<lb />or a phone call supposedly from<lb />the IRS, telling them that some of<lb /><lb />see TAX TIPS page A2<lb /><lb />E-filing tips<lb /><lb />Want to e-file your taxes<lb />online? <lb />ton.<lb /><lb />pee<lb /><lb />Whose tomb<lb />is 1t, anyway?<lb />How not to go about a discovery<lb /><lb />YAZID FINN<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Anyone watch the Discovery channel on Sunday?<lb />Maybe catch James CameronTs newest documentary?<lb />Possibly hear claims that the tomb of Jesus was dis-<lb />covered? While the material that CameronTs docu-<lb />mentary covers is nothing new, allow me to bring<lb />everyone up to speed with a quick review.<lb /><lb />First we must travel back in time twenty seven<lb />years. Construction is taking place in a suburb of<lb />Jerusalem when workers stumble upon an ancient<lb />cave in which numerous tombs are found. Workers<lb />immediately call for archeologist to the scene and<lb />the tombs are then studied, attempting to translate<lb />the names of the buried. Time passes, but in the end,<lb />the names are discovered and among them are Mary,<lb />Mathew, Jesua and Judah, son of Jesua.<lb /><lb />But wait, James Cameron, Jesus rose from the<lb />grave, as it is the cornerstone of the Christian faith.<lb />His body was buried by Joseph of Arimathea at what<lb />is now known as the Church of the Holy Sepulcher<lb />and his tomb is empty to show this! Are you trying<lb />to.claim that JesusT remains are actually in one of the<lb />ancient coffins discovered in 1980? What evidence<lb />do you have to support this assertion? Well... let<lb />us take a look.<lb /><lb />CameronTs most compelling reasoning seems<lb />logical enough, as he looks towards forensics and<lb />DNA comparisons made between the tombs. Well as<lb />modern day prosecutors and defense attorneys can<lb /><lb />_ attest, DNA can only prove so much and this case is<lb /><lb />no different. The only thing proven is that everyone<lb />buried in the tombs are related, as no outside DNA<lb />sample can compare to those in the tombs. CameronTs<lb />DNA evidence begins to look like circular reasoning<lb />as his claim implies the truth of... well, his claim.<lb /><lb />The next biggest counter to CameronTs claim<lb />attacks the names of the very people he believes to<lb />document. Sure archeologists translated the names<lb />of the tomb to Jesua and Mary, but what does this<lb />show? Only that the caskets of someone named Jesua<lb />and Mary was unearthed. But are they the Jesua and<lb />Mary as described in the New Testament? I sure do<lb />not think so, as those names were among the most<lb />common for the time period. Records discovered for<lb />the time show during the period that Jesus lived,<lb />at least 200 people were named Joseph, 150 people<lb />were named Judah, 70 were named Mary and finally<lb />over 90 others named Jesus were alive. ThatTs like<lb />excavating a graveyard one thousand years from now<lb />and describing to someone that the tombs of Smith,<lb />Johnson and Brown had been discovered. You'd only<lb />have discovered the tombs of people carrying the<lb />most common surname of the point in time.<lb /><lb />Now I am covering the scientific and statistical<lb />aspects of the documentary and will not delve into<lb />the Biblical aspects of this case, as I am truly not an<lb />expert on Christian teachings. However from the<lb />claims arising against Cameron from more scholarly<lb />perspectives, more are dismissing the documentary<lb />as an attempt to gain publicity and, like the downfall<lb />of all men, make money. Cameron stood to make<lb />not only a profit for filming the unearthing of the<lb />tombs and selling the documentary to Discovery<lb /><lb />(for unannounced millions), but from future DVDT<lb /><lb />sales as well.<lb /><lb />The issue is a controversial one and as experts<lb />join both sides of the fray, things are sure to get<lb />heated as more claims and counterpoints are pre-<lb />sented for both sides. Is the Titanic director attempt-<lb />ing to osink Christianity? as some believe, or truly<lb />hoping to learn about the past? Is money on the<lb />forefront of his mind, or the truth?<lb /><lb />Only God knows and time will tell.<lb /><lb />Fuelfor nukes<lb /><lb />Are we bargaining for disaster?<lb /><lb />MARGOT ROGERSON<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />The day before ValentineTs Day, the media<lb />published some astonishing news. The United<lb />States Government, along with four other nations<lb />including, China, South Korea, Russia and Japan,<lb />have entered into a new deal for the disarmament<lb />of North Korea.<lb /><lb />At first, the disarmament of a powerful and<lb />volatile nation seems very desirable; however, there<lb />is much debate over the new deal and the possibility<lb />of onuclear blackmail.?<lb /><lb />The terms of the deal state that North Korea will<lb />receive a total of one million tons of oil, worth nearly<lb />$250 million dollars, in exchange for the complete<lb />disarmament of their nuclear programs: _<lb /><lb />It seems, to me, as ifthe United States is treating<lb />this deal as simply as a kindergartner would trade<lb />crayons. ITll give you my blue for your red. However,<lb />I should hope that the two governments would give<lb />a deal of this magnitude more consideration than a<lb />pair of kindergartners.<lb /><lb />My first and most important concern is this"<lb />what happens when the United States and other<lb />governments can no longer supply the fuel demanded<lb />by North Korea to continue the disarmanient of their<lb />nuclear programs? What use is the deal if it is only<lb />for the short run?<lb /><lb />The world is on the verge of change. Many hos-<lb />tile governments, including North Korea and Iran,<lb />are within reach of complete nuclear power. There<lb />is no doubt that drastic measures should be taken<lb /><lb />to try to ensure safety of the country or devastation<lb /><lb />is likely to prevail. I applaud the United States for<lb />being one of the first nations to step up and try to<lb />invoke change, but at the same time, a deal like this<lb />seems more controversial than beneficial.<lb /><lb />oThe United States government should use their<lb />resources to develop a plan that will suffice in the<lb />long run. We should also be wary of jumping into<lb />very costly deals with other nations that have proven<lb />themselves untrustworthy.<lb /><lb />Is President Bush trying to hastily put a good<lb />stamp on his presidency before it is over? I guess<lb />only the future will tell.<lb /><lb />MCT<lb /><lb />{ Let the fun begin }<lb /><lb />WEDNESDAY MARCH 7, 2007<lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />Is it too late to be a groupie for the Lady<lb />Pirates b-ball team? Perhaps it's gone on<lb />for so long that she doesnTt think sheTs doing anything<lb /><lb />of the way, especially if you're thinking there might be<lb />a little confrontation. We would pass notes in class, talk casually<lb />with a teacher and at times get into some disputes<lb />with them. This was a time when you would fear your<lb />teacherTs wrath and when you would never think to<lb />talk during class expecting to get away with it or<lb />disobey the basic rules of the school, which some are<lb />rules of common courtesy. So how is it that when we<lb />enter college those rules which we were raised on<lb /><lb />_ get erased?<lb /><lb />In college we are given the freedom to wear hats,<lb /><lb />_ chew gum, drink and eat almost anything we want<lb /><lb />in class. As college wears on we forget that there<lb />was ever a time where we couldn't do these things,<lb />but the one rule I always will remember is to shut<lb />up in class.<lb /><lb />I think everybody can relate to this problem,<lb />and in some cases I am sure you were the problem.<lb />I think I finally flew over the edge last week in my<lb />microeconomics class. This is a class that has no<lb />attendance policy and if you wanted to you could<lb />possibly get away with barely ever coming to class.<lb />So, much to my surprise I was sitting in class last<lb />week, around the middle to front area to get away<lb /><lb />from the people who talk in the back. As I sat there I<lb />* couldn't believe it but I heard some whispering: o.....<lb /><lb />Rests Shee. next week...? I assumed that I<lb />was too close to the front for them to continue talk-<lb />ing and it would stop soon. To my dismay it didnTt...<lb />ever. They literally talked the entire class, not only<lb />that they even threw in the comical note from time<lb />to time oWhat is she talking about? I have no idea<lb />what is going on in this class.?<lb /><lb />Really?! Oh wow that was a huge surprise to me<lb />and everyone else who heard you. This class has no<lb />attendance policy and yet these two people made it a<lb />point to catch up in the middle of class.<lb /><lb />I realize this is an extreme, but I think everyone<lb />knows I am not the only one with a story to tell.<lb />My roommate recently told me one of the most dis-<lb />respectful stories I have ever heard. He was in his<lb />night class and it had already begun. Around five to<lb />10 minutes into the class a girl pops in talking.on<lb />her cell phone. Amazingly she continues to talk while<lb />entering the class while the teacher is talking. oUhh<lb />excuse me?? the teacher says. oHuh? Oh. Hey I gotta<lb />go I am in class, J will talk to you later.? What if the<lb />teacher had said nothing? I wonder how long she<lb /><lb />- would have talked or not noticed she was in class.<lb /><lb />I guess overall, students canTt really do anything<lb />about this. I am just wondering how professors have<lb />any tolerance for these kinds of actions. I thought<lb />college professors would bite off your head for even<lb />disagreeing with them. I never would have thought<lb />I could talk during all of class. All I can really say<lb />is that I just want everyone to shut up in class and<lb />just not come if you really feel the urge to open your<lb />mouth to anyone but the teacher.<lb /><lb />AG<lb /><lb />die Sa roce SF<lb /><lb />OF Pr Dene<lb /><lb />»<lb /><lb />we donTt go to bed angry.<lb />Of course, we havenTt slept in weeks.?<lb /><lb />oOur secret is ...<lb /><lb />Sarah Bell<lb />Editor in Chief<lb />Elizabeth Lauten<lb /><lb />News Editor Asst. Mitchell said. oI had<lb />a good relationship with coach<lb />[Houston] Nutt.<lb /><lb />Mitchell hesitates before<lb />revealing why he didnTt end up<lb />with the Razorbacks.<lb /><lb />oWhen it came down to aca-<lb />demic credits, I had done a lot of<lb />schoolwork at North Carolina.<lb />When the credits transferred<lb />over to Arkansas, they wouldnTt<lb />have transferred over to get me<lb />the amount of credits that ITd<lb />worked for.<lb /><lb />Mitchell said that.coach Nutt<lb />advised him not to come to Arkan-<lb />sas because of the credit situation.<lb />So Mitchell looked for a second<lb />opinion from a couple of trusted<lb />friends and mentors. He spoke<lb />to his former Hargrave Military<lb />Academy coach.<lb /><lb />Finally he seeked advise from<lb />close friend Marcus Hands. Hands<lb /><lb />ois.a ECU. defensive lineman. who .<lb /><lb />went through a very similar situ-<lb />ation as Mitchell.<lb /><lb />oI talked to my.coach from<lb />Hargrave, then the next thing you<lb />know I talked to Marcus [Hands]<lb /><lb />Mitchell was a defensive force for the Heels.<lb /><lb />and the guys,? said Mitchell. oI got<lb />to talking to the coaches and the<lb />next thing you know I came here<lb />[ECU] and ITm loving it.<lb /><lb />One person that certainly isnTt<lb />upset with MitchellTs decision to<lb /><lb />transfer to ECU is Pirates Head -<lb /><lb />Coach Skip Holtz. At a pre-spring<lb />football press conference, the<lb />third. year head coach mentioned<lb />Mitchell as player to specifically<lb />lodk out for.<lb /><lb />oHe plays with a passion, an<lb />excitement, an enthusiasm and<lb />emotion. He plays the game the<lb />way itTs supposed to be played,?<lb /><lb />said Holtz. oHe plays it and heTs all ©<lb /><lb />heart. ITm really excited; I think he<lb />is one of the guys that has a. chance<lb />to make a real splash this year.?<lb /><lb />After transferring, Mitchell<lb />has learned that Coach Holtz is<lb />totally different from what coach<lb />Bunting was like during his tenure<lb />at UNC.<lb /><lb />oCoach Bunting was a great<lb />guy,T Mitchell said of his former<lb />coach. oHe was very, very different;<lb />heTs from the NFL, so obviously the<lb />coaches in the NFL are a lot more<lb />stern; more business friendly.?<lb /><lb />oCoach Holtz is more of..a_<lb /><lb />friend to people. If I catch coach<lb />Holtz walking outside I might<lb />go jump on him or something.<lb />You know I couldn't do that with<lb />coach Bunting because he is more<lb /><lb />ECU womenTs tennis<lb /><lb />=<lb />oS<lb /><lb />Photo by Zach Sirkin<lb /><lb />Junior Luiza Borges is sticking it to opponents in singles and doubles.<lb /><lb />Pirates extend winning<lb />streak to three<lb /><lb />JOSEPH MURPHY<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />The ECU womenTs tennis team<lb />pulled out a 4-3 victory against<lb />the previously unbeaten Coastal<lb />Carolina Chanticleers Friday, Feb.<lb />23, and defeated the Wofford Terri-<lb />ers 5-2 last Saturday morning. The<lb />Pirates prevailed in both matches<lb /><lb />despite nagging injuries and ill-<lb /><lb />nesses. The victories improved the<lb />Pirates record this season to 11-5<lb />and dropped the Chanticleers to 6-1<lb />and the Terriers to 1-5.<lb /><lb />oWe played hard, were beat up<lb />a little bit and were not playing<lb />our best tennis,? said Pirates Head<lb />Coach Tom Morris. oEverybody<lb />played hard, maybe not well, but<lb />they played hard.?<lb /><lb />The Pirates started out the<lb /><lb />match against Coastal Carolina by "<lb /><lb />winning the doubles point with wins<lb />by the tandems of Luiza Borges with<lb />Mireia Gol, and Alex Smith with<lb />Brooke Walter. The doubles point<lb />made the difference, as the teams<lb />split the six singles matches.<lb /><lb />In singles play, Borges defeated<lb />Coastal Carolina's Amy Pazahanick<lb />(6-0, 4-6, 6-1) and Varinia Soler?<lb />defeated Sofie Ahlberg (4-6, 7-6,<lb />6-2) for crucial three set victories.<lb />The other Pirate singles victory<lb />came from Gol who defeated Sarize<lb />Coetzee (7-5, 6-3).<lb /><lb />Morris applauded SolerTs come<lb />from behind victory after the match.<lb /><lb />oSoler lost the first set and was<lb />just battling in the whole second set,<lb />but she got through it and [won] the<lb />tiebreaker and really opened a door<lb />for us [by winningT] the third set.?<lb /><lb />Against the Terriers the Pirates<lb />doubles duos of Borges with Gol and<lb /><lb />holds court at home<lb /><lb />Soler with Anca Dumitru swept the<lb />Terriers to earn the doubles point.<lb />Singles victories by Gol, Borges and<lb /><lb />Brooke Walter clinched the win for<lb /><lb />the Pirates.<lb /><lb />The team showed remarkable<lb />perseverance by defeating a quality<lb />opponent like Coastal Carolina.<lb /><lb />oAbout half the team is<lb />struggling with something, in<lb />terms of injuries or illness,? said<lb />Morris. oItTs always a challenge<lb />with Coastal, you know they're<lb />going to play well... they have a<lb />good, strong team thatTs going<lb />to fight hard. Usually the team<lb />that fights hardest gets a little<lb />lucky and gets the win, and that<lb />was us today.?<lb /><lb />The wind blew especially hard<lb />during the Coastal Carolina match<lb />on and clearly effected play.<lb /><lb />oIt affects some playerTs games<lb />more than others, but nobody plays<lb />well in the wind, thatTs why it is<lb />so important to fight and not let<lb />it bother you and keep focusing,?<lb />Morris said. oNobody likes play-<lb />ing in the wind, you'd much rather<lb />play in the cold than the wind, but<lb />it affects both teams.?<lb /><lb />The womenTs tennis team is<lb />now in the midst of a 12-day break<lb />from competition. Their next match<lb />is Thursday March 15 at South<lb />Carolina State. The time away from<lb />competition comes at a sou time<lb />for the team.<lb /><lb />oWe've played an awful lot<lb />of tennis up to this point,? said<lb />Morris. oNow we have a little bit of<lb />a break where we can really practice<lb />and focus.?<lb /><lb />The Pirates loaded schedule to °<lb /><lb />this point in the season is evidenced<lb />by the fact that they have already<lb />played twice as many matches as<lb />Coastal Carolina and Wofford<lb />at this point in the season. The<lb />team hopes to use the time off to<lb /><lb />Improve in practice and recover<lb /><lb />from injuries.<lb />oHopefully we can get some<lb />good practice in the next few weeks,?<lb /><lb />Morris said. oWere going to use that |<lb /><lb />time to get healthy and improve.?<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />about business and serious,? said.<lb />Mitchell. oI can just come out<lb />here and relax and relate to coach<lb /><lb />[Holtz] a lot better. He under-<lb /><lb />stands that I came from Carolina.<lb /><lb />He understands that there is a lot<lb /><lb />of tension since [the teams are]<lb /><lb />close. So he just made the process<lb /><lb />a lot easier.?<lb /><lb />Mitchell had to sit out last year<lb />due'to transfer rules and considers<lb />it a blessing.<lb /><lb />oI had a chance to try out<lb />different moves, try out different<lb />scenarios,? Mitchell said of using<lb />the redshirt time to his advantage.<lb />oI started loving practice. It was<lb />the only time I could put on pads,<lb />so I fell in love with practice. It<lb /><lb />showed me how to polish up my ~<lb /><lb />skills and be a better player.?<lb />When he returns to the field for<lb />the 2007 season, Mitchell wants to<lb />prove to his new, as well as old<lb />coaches, that he can bounce back.<lb />oMy personal goals for the<lb />season are just to take all the<lb />coaching ITve learned from both<lb />coach Browning over at Carolina<lb />and coach Thompson over here at<lb />East Carolina and just show both -<lb /><lb />_ of those-guys:that ITm. the: type of:<lb /><lb />player that when you coach me<lb />ITm going to learn it, go ahead<lb />and get it right, and polish up on<lb />it,? Mitchell said. oThe one.thing<lb /><lb />| want people to gain from me, if<lb /><lb />Now he is vying for a spot on a crowded line.<lb /><lb />they can say something, is that ohe<lb />was resilient against odds.?<lb /><lb />The Tar Heels will make their<lb />way to Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium<lb />for the first time since 2003 on<lb />Sept. 9.<lb /><lb />While having thought about<lb />the clash since transferring from<lb />UNC, Mitchell banished the<lb />thoughts from his mind as soon<lb />as spring practice began.<lb /><lb />oI dreamt about it everyday<lb />until today,? Mitchell said on the<lb />opening day of spring practice.<lb />oTT'm like everybody else now; ITm<lb />not redshirting anymore so I have<lb />to worry about Virginia Tech<lb />first. ThatTs still a rivalry for me<lb />because ITm from Virginia Beach,<lb />so thatTs the oboys? I worked<lb />against [in high school]. ITm just<lb />taking it a game at a time.?<lb /><lb />Mitchell added that thereTs no<lb />question he is looking forward to<lb />playing some of his former team-<lb />mates.<lb /><lb />oWhen Carolina comes<lb />around I'll tell you how I<lb />feel about that,? he said.<lb /><lb />And with that, Mitchell walks<lb />off the turfin the chill of the early<lb />spring night and is finally exactly<lb />where he wants to be; wearing the<lb />purple and gold.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Pirates pick up midweek<lb />win over Aggies?<lb /><lb />Neitz improves record<lb />after fanning four<lb /><lb />(SID)"ECU sophomore Ste-<lb />phen Batts collected a pair of hits,<lb />scored and drove in a run, and<lb />senior Jason Neitz fanned 4-of-7<lb />batters he faced as the Pirates<lb />picked up a midweek win against<lb /><lb />in-state foe N.C.
