So that there is<lb />a seamless transition of services,<lb />the bid process will start before<lb />the current agreement expires.<lb /><lb />Aramark has served ECU<lb />since 1990, and its services were<lb />renewed in 1995, 2000 and there<lb />was a two-year extension in 2005<lb />that is nearing its end.<lb /><lb />Johnson said that a 2006.<lb /><lb />survey rated ECU students<lb />higher than the national aver-<lb />age in regards to campus dining,<lb />with 98 percent of students being<lb />satisfied.<lb /><lb />He also said that a priority of<lb />Campus Dining is to make osure<lb />that students recognize all the<lb />avenues they have to give feed-<lb />back on their dining experience.<lb />We do give students numerous<lb />different avenues.?<lb /><lb />oA strong campus dining pro-<lb /><lb />gram has mechanisms in place for<lb />students to express their overall<lb />satisfaction with services,? said<lb />Mike Lysaught, resident district<lb />manager for Aramark. oWe have<lb />several ways in which students<lb />can provide feedback on campus<lb />dining issues. School<lb />of Nursing researcher saw signifi-<lb />cant decreases in pain and anxiety<lb />in cancer patients whose partners<lb />used reflexology or manual pres-<lb />sure applied to specific points on<lb />their feet.<lb /><lb />The findings of Dr. Nancy<lb />L.N. Stephenson, associate pro-<lb />fessor in the school of nursing<lb />and principle investigator, were<lb />published in the January issue<lb />of Oncology Nursing. Forum.<lb />Co-investigators include her col-<lb />leagues in the nursing school, Dr.<lb />Melvin Swanson and Dr. Martha<lb />Engelke, as well as Dr. JoAnn<lb />Dalton at Emory University and<lb />Dr. Frances J. Keefe at Duke Uni-<lb />versity. The study was funded for<lb />$279,000 by the National Cancer<lb />Institute of the National Institutes<lb />of Health.<lb /><lb />Stephenson, a certified reflex-<lb />ologist, has applied for additional<lb />federal funding to continue her<lb />research into the effects of part-<lb />ner-delivered foot reflexology.<lb /><lb />86 patients with different<lb />types of metastatic cancer and<lb />their partners were recruited from<lb />Pitt County Memorial Hospital,<lb />Carteret General Hospital, Lenoir<lb />Memorial Hospital and Craven<lb />Regional Medical Center to par-<lb />ticipate in the study which began,<lb />in July 2003. The largest group, 23<lb />percent, had lung cancer followed<lb />by breast, colorectal, head and<lb />neck and lymphoma. The mean<lb />age of patients was 58.3 years<lb />and 51 percent were female. The<lb />majority, 66 percent, had a high-<lb />school education or less. Of those,<lb />58 percent were white, 40 percent<lb />were black and one percent was<lb />Filipino.<lb /><lb />Patients were randomly placed<lb />in an experimental or control<lb />group. Partners in the experimen-<lb />tal group were taught by Stephen-<lb />son how to apply foot reflexology<lb />to the patient while in the hospital.<lb />A reflexology documentation form<lb />and protocol and a list of signs and<lb />symptoms of deep vein thrombo-<lb />sis were provided. Control group<lb />participants received usual care<lb />and a 30-minute reading session<lb />from their partner.<lb /><lb />An immediate decrease in pain<lb />intensity and anxiety was seen in<lb />patients receiving reflexology.<lb />Relief was strongest for patients<lb />with moderate to severe levels of<lb />pain. Minimal changes were seen<lb />in the control group.<lb /><lb />oWe had positive responses<lb />particularly from spouses who<lb />felt like they were able to do<lb />something for the patient,? said<lb />Stephenson.<lb /><lb />This is the fourth pilot study<lb />that Stephenson has conducted that<lb /><lb />see REFLEXOLOGY page A3<lb /><lb />ww<lb /><lb />Ledonia Wright Cultural<lb />Center celebrates, welcomes all<lb /><lb />Events for the entire<lb />ECU community<lb /><lb />ALYCIA WENDT<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />Events will be going on all<lb />day in the Ledonia Wright Cul-<lb />tural Center to celebrate the cul-<lb />ture center and ECUTs upcoming<lb />centennial.<lb /><lb />The LWCC is a center where<lb />the ECU community can come<lb /><lb />to learn about different cul-<lb />tures. It is one of<lb />several complementary and alter-<lb />native medicine therapies seeing<lb />increased use in recent years. An<lb />exact number is unknown, but an<lb />estimated 90 percent of cancer<lb />patients use some form of alterna-<lb />tive therapy such as massage or<lb />music therapy, biofeedback, yoga<lb />or acupuncture, which advocates<lb />say addresses the mind, body and<lb />spirit without side effects found<lb />with some medications or proce-<lb />dures. <p>ee<lb /><lb />Opinion<lb /><lb />ramark<lb />keeps it<lb />classy<lb /><lb />Nothing says delicious like mass<lb />food poisonings<lb /><lb />BRIDGET TODD<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />At a recent SGA meeting, I was quite pleased<lb />to find free food. As someone who is both cheap<lb />and greedy, I was delighted. After munching on a<lb />few free cookies, however, I learned the food was<lb />compliments of Aramark.<lb /><lb />If I werenTt so darn hungry, I would have §<lb />thrown away my plate and left. A few free sand- =<lb /><lb />wiches and some ruffled chips werenTt about to<lb />make me forget all of the awful things Aramark<lb />has contributed to.<lb /><lb /> Now Aramark isnTt inherently an evil corpo-<lb />ration, but they do have some questionable prac-<lb />tices, from both business and ethical standpoints.<lb />Because we support Aramark everyday by eating<lb />on campus, we should be informed about what the<lb />corporation does in the world other than serve<lb />quesadillas to ECU students.<lb /><lb />' For instance, in October 1999, Aramark was<lb />found liable in an incident that took place at Giants<lb />Stadium. Aramark employees continued to serve<lb />beer to an obviously intoxicated patron who later<lb />went on to cause a car accident that left an 18-<lb />month old girl a quadriplegic.<lb /><lb />Fans are only allowed to buy two beers at a time<lb />but the patron was able to sidestep this pesky rule<lb />by classily slipping the cashier $10. The show Inside<lb />Edition did an investigative story on AramarkTs<lb />alcohol serving practices and found that stadium<lb />vendors routinely broke rules involving limits of<lb />beers per transaction.<lb /><lb />In addition to serving stadiums and colleges,<lb />Aramark also provides food to prisons. The food<lb />Aramark provides to prisoners is so bad; prison<lb />officials worry about it causing riots.<lb /><lb />After all, a hungry inmate is often a<lb />problematic inmate. Journalist for the St. Petersburg<lb />Times Thomas Tobin, reflects on the state of food<lb />services Aramark provides to Florida prisons,<lb />writing, oIn Marion County, inmate kitchen |<lb />workers, on orders from an Aramark supervisor,<lb />soaked spoiled chicken in vinegar and water to<lb />take away the smell before cooking. Corrections<lb />officers found out and ordered 500 pieces of chicken<lb />thrown out.? ee<lb /><lb />In Putnam County, corrections officers discov-<lb />ered pans of refrigerated food with altered dates, a<lb />serious infraction that sparked a major investiga-<lb />tion. Officials suspected Aramark was subverting<lb />the prison systemTs strict rules on using leftovers<lb />" rules intended to prevent mass inmate sickness.<lb />In Brevard County, inspections in March and<lb />May found maggots on serving trays and kitchen<lb />floors. Inspection reports in other institutions<lb />described Aramark kitchens as filthyT and in one<lb />case, horrendous.T That sounds pretty cruel and<lb />unusual to me.<lb /><lb />Now I know what you're thinking: Prisons are<lb />one thing, but Aramark would never serve food<lb />that bad to college kids right? Wrong! In 1999,<lb />120 students at Pomona College became ill with<lb />a salmonella related outbreak after eating at Ara-<lb />mark run dining halls.<lb /><lb />If you think Aramark is known for treating<lb />their employees well, a quick Google search will<lb />quickly dispel that notion. William Norman, who<lb />was an Aramark manager at High Point Univer-<lb />sity, claims the company threatened him after he<lb />refused to fire mentally and physically challenged<lb />employees in 2000.<lb /><lb />In addition, after 10 black Aramark employees<lb /><lb />filed a discrimination suit against the company<lb />with the U.S. Court for the Eastern District of<lb />Pennsylvania, employee Michelle Catagnus claims<lb />that she was asked to lie about one of the black<lb />employees by Aramark managers.<lb />, Catagnus claims she witnessed manager<lb />Chris Hornbaker yelling at a black employee and<lb />later Hornbaker asked her to sign a document<lb />stating that the employee started the altercation.<lb />After she refused and complained to supervi-<lb />sors, she alleged that she became the victim of<lb />oretaliation treatment? which included<lb />unwarranted write-ups and being assigned more<lb />work than possible to complete in a shift. After<lb />complaining to the Aramark corporate offices,<lb />Catagnus maintains they took ono corrective action<lb />of any kind.?<lb /><lb />There have been a score of incidents involving<lb />AramarkTs unfair treatment of workers at UNC<lb />over the last few years. Dining hall employee Lezlie<lb />Sumpter was fired after speaking out publicly<lb />against the sexual harassment perpetrated by male<lb />supervisors who weren't chastised.<lb /><lb />In January 2005, Aramark employees at UNC<lb />dining halls began organizing with the Service<lb />Employees International Union. Students helped<lb />out by distributing leaflets and translating meet-<lb />ings for Spanish-speaking employees. Aramark<lb />responded by removing the student activists. and<lb />sending threatening anti-union letters to their<lb />employees.<lb /><lb />In 2005, Aramark had police investigate Vel<lb />Dowdy, a vocal union supporter. Aramark dis-<lb />covered she had given a handful of free meals to<lb />students and had Dowdy removed in handcuffs<lb />and charged with felony embezzlement. Students<lb />protested, claiming that Aramark only wanted to<lb />get rid of an enthusiastic union supporter.<lb /><lb />If this makes You a little uneasy out about<lb />dining with Aramark, think twice when purchasing<lb />Aramark-prepared foods. After all, this is a public<lb />institution and that is our right. Oh, but wait, if<lb />you live on campus you are required to purchase a<lb />meal plan. Score another win for Aramark!<lb /><lb />{ Your personal study break }<lb /><lb />THURSDAY MARCH 1, 2007<lb />RANT OF THE DAY "<lb /><lb />If you think nobody cares if you're alive,<lb />try missing a couple of car payments.<lb /><lb />PAGE A4.<lb /><lb />ie<lb /><lb />(F LT RERUNS THIS<lb />SUMMER, I THINK<lb />L TURN IT OFF/<lb /><lb />The East Carolinian does not endorse statements made in Pirate Rants. Some of<lb />you are my good friends. Some of you like me, and<lb />some of you hate me (this could be because I donTt<lb />publish your Rants), and some of you just met me<lb />when I was having a bad day, which is unfortunate<lb />because I consider myself to be a relatively pleasant<lb />person. Most of you donTt know me personally, but<lb />if you're reading this now, you've probably already<lb />read the Rants, and so I would venture to say that in<lb />your own way, you do: I am the one who decides what<lb />goes into the Opinion page, and what doesnTt, and<lb />I'd like to take a moment to respond to some of the<lb />things that ITve read and experienced this semester.<lb /><lb />When I first started here, it was scary. I was<lb />a staff writer in News and very new to journalism<lb />in general. My first stories consisted of finding<lb />out why the manholes (they were really just steam<lb />vents) all over campus smelled terrible and spend-<lb />ing hours talking to wily professors that wanted<lb />only five percent of what they said to actually<lb />make it into the paper (oThis is off the record,<lb />right, Miss??)... Some of them even wanted the<lb />prepublication copy so they could approve it first.<lb /><lb />Then one day, I was bumped to News Editor.<lb />This happened literally overnight. I did my best to<lb />pick up the pieces. I learned quickly out of necessity<lb />and kept plugging away and making mistakes until<lb />I was doing the best job that I knew I could. I spent<lb />about a year in that position, and this semester I<lb />switched over to the Opinion page. Let me tell you:<lb />Nothing I ever dealt with in News compares to the<lb />way people treat each otherTs opinions. ItTs been a<lb />heck of a ride for a whole new number of reasons.<lb /><lb />ITve learned that having an opinion makes<lb />you an easy target because the vast majority of<lb />the population will not share theirs for fear of<lb />retribution. This is where the Pirate Rants come<lb />in. Anonymous as a thief in the night and as cruel<lb />as any dictator has ever been, a person can type<lb />out all the hate in his or her heart and send it<lb />right to me. Sometimes itTs funny and sometimes<lb />itTs hurtful. Sometimes you all say things to each<lb />other that I canTt hardly fathom, much less print.<lb />Why? No one can connect it to you, of course.<lb /><lb />Other times, though, this is the best job ITve<lb />ever had because you send me the funniest things,<lb />which I have the honor of sharing with the rest<lb />of you. Others rant just to say things like, oITm<lb />Ranting right now because you wonTt print my<lb />Rants!? Lovely. Thanks for that. Also, owho is Jack<lb />Bauer?? ItTs been driving me crazy. The student<lb />body sends about 300 Rants per day, so please...<lb />DonTt send me hate mail because I-didnTt print<lb />your stuff. Be wittier, more sincere, wackier or<lb />funnier next time. Finally, as many of you point<lb />out, yes it is bad if you have to ask whether or not<lb />itTs bad. The same goes for weirdT and wrong,T too.<lb /><lb />Also, sometimes I see Rants that make really<lb />good arguments for a real cause, or are simply a<lb />valid message. For instance, perhaps ECU will<lb />spend a few dollars to make sure Whichard gets<lb />some signs soon... or the community may take<lb />notice when students voice their opinion on the<lb />MLK /fifth street issue or something else that mat-<lb />ters. Honestly, though, if you have that strong of<lb />an opinion that you have to send me the same Rant<lb />five times in a row, why donTt you write a letter to<lb />the editor? That is the best way to end up with sig-<lb />nificant space on the opinion page. Since I had some<lb />space to work with and itTs my turn to have an opin-<lb />ion, I thought ITd answer the questions I keep seeing<lb />and share with you all, (who also love the Rants,<lb /><lb />from what I can see) what I love about this page as<lb /><lb />well. However, this is my opinion; ITm fully aware<lb />that I have a job to do here, and I donTt strive to run<lb />some Rants and not others due to anything other.<lb />than the standards by which this entire newspaper<lb />operates. Also, the disclaimer that you see when<lb />you rant is necessary. I canTt help if you donTt like it<lb />and ranting about how you donTt like it is not going<lb />to get it taken off of the page. Ah, that feels better.<lb /><lb />So rant.on, or come fill out an application. Just<lb />be prepared for criticism. The Rants are ruthless.<lb /><lb />Sarah Bell<lb /><lb />Editor in Chief<lb />Jenelle Conner Lizz Wells<lb />News Editor » _ Asst. The downtown<lb />area has already seen an influx of<lb />new businesses in the past couple<lb />of years with its inauguration of<lb />various new restaurants, boutiques<lb />and other establishments. Over the<lb />next couple of years the rest of the<lb />city will be catching up with new<lb />businesses popping up around<lb />every corner.<lb /><lb />Perhaps the most appealing<lb />on this list of new businesses is<lb />the number of restaurants that<lb />are moving in. It is no secret that<lb />Tripps Restaurant and another<lb />MoeTs can be added to the phone<lb />bookTs orestaurant? listing.<lb /><lb />Tripps, which specializes in<lb />fine steaks, seafood and pasta<lb />dishes, has already opened its<lb />doors to the public and is located<lb />off Greenville Boulevard on Red<lb />Banks Road. While<lb />Mr. Harrison was able to provide<lb />the names of upcoming busi-<lb />nesses, details such as what kind<lb />of food is featured are unavailable<lb />at this time.<lb /><lb />Two new restaurants have been<lb />confirmed. His fifth studio album, and the album that<lb />propelled him to a new level of fame, 1999 deals with<lb />such content as Armageddon and, of course, sex. Tisdale belts out her prom-<lb />ise to do anything for her boyfriend.<lb /><lb />An attempt to be sexy follows<lb />with the next song, oHe Said, She<lb />Said,? which also sounds like an<lb />early Justin Timberlake song. It was one of those things<lb />that you need to experience first-<lb />hand in order to understand, but<lb />it truly was something else.<lb /><lb />Monday, as outlined in<lb />the project guidelines, I spent<lb />the day in modified silence.<lb />That is to say, I was only to<lb />speak when absolutely necessary<lb />and as little as possible. If you<lb />know me, a day without talking<lb />sounds hopeless.<lb /><lb />As expected, I struggled all<lb /><lb />day. long to keep quiet. There were -<lb /><lb />so many moments where I wanted<lb />to speak more than anything else<lb />in the world. Yet, as the hours<lb />passed, I started to adjust to the<lb />deafening silence.<lb /><lb />That didnTt stop my thoughts<lb />though, and there were moments<lb />where being more aware of them:<lb />became overwhelming. I donTt think<lb />ITve ever stopped to be that aware of<lb />what was going on inside my head<lb />outside of meditating for the project.<lb /><lb />It was then that I came to the<lb />realization that I find comfort<lb /><lb />in speech. It makes noise, and in<lb />that noise, I find solace. Gener-<lb />ally, we think of speaking as<lb />communicating and way to feel<lb />more connected with the world,<lb />but for me I realized that I use<lb />talking as a barrier in many<lb />ways. In<lb />addition there is something for the<lb />users who do not feel like reading<lb />much. Mikkelson has just added a<lb />category that deals entirely with<lb />pictures. She offers up a variety<lb />of famous pictures and tells the<lb />reader whether the pictures are<lb />true or faked.<lb /><lb />The user can spend hours<lb />looking through the site when<lb />there is utterly nothing else left to<lb />do just browsing through. A great<lb />thing about the site is that it is very<lb />easy to navigate. The site admin-<lb />istrator does an excellent job of<lb />making myths and categories<lb />easy to find. The administrator<lb />also does a great job of research-<lb />ing and educating visitors to<lb />the site about different myths.<lb /><lb />She not only tells the reader<lb />whether a myth is true or not but<lb />she also spends vast amounts of<lb />time telling the reader about a<lb />myths particular origin and his-<lb />tory. Each myth she<lb />receives with the exception of a<lb />small few are given to her by users.<lb /><lb />Just like the television show<lb />Mythbusters, users can send in<lb />different myths and Mikkelson<lb />will attempt to prove or disprove<lb />them. She even goes a step ahead<lb />and provides very interesting and<lb />valid links to different site that<lb />will give the user even further<lb />information about a myth.<lb /><lb />Myths are on a four-scale<lb />rating system. A green light<lb />beside a myth means that it is true,<lb />a red light falsepa yellow light is<lb />plausible and a white light means<lb />that the administrator has no idea<lb />where the myth came from.<lb /><lb />The siteTs design is fairly<lb />simple and doesnTt go over the top<lb />with annoying banners or insane,<lb />unneeded colors. Before the first<lb />practice was held yesterday after-<lb />noon, Holtz addressed the media<lb />at a luncheon.<lb /><lb />Holtz started off by addressing<lb />four main areas on each side of<lb />the ball that he would like to see<lb />improved upon. On the defensive<lb />side, Holtz would like to improve<lb />the front seven, productivity of<lb />the blitz, put more pressure on the<lb />imposing quarterback and break<lb />on the ball better.<lb /><lb />As for the offensive side, coach<lb />would like to see a reduction in loss<lb />of yards plays, a solid mid-section<lb />of the offensive line, the ability to<lb />get short yardage in crucial situ-<lb />ations and get the ball down field<lb />in both the Passing and running<lb />game.<lb /><lb />During the econ Holtz<lb />asked himself ohow can we make<lb />the staff stronger? after special<lb /><lb />teams coach Don Yanowsky left<lb /><lb />the Pirates for Boston College.<lb />HoltzTs main goal of making the<lb />staff stronger was to get himself<lb />out of the offensive coordinator role<lb />and into being a head coach more.<lb /><lb />oOne of the things that I really<lb />wanted to do was take myself more<lb />out of the offense. So I felt like<lb />if I could bring somebody that I<lb />was very comfortable with on the<lb />offensive side of the ball then it<lb />would enable me to step back and<lb />be more of a head coach instead of<lb />an offensive coordinator and hence<lb />Todd FitchTs name came up,? said<lb />the third year coach.<lb /><lb />Todd Fitch returns to work-<lb />ing with Holtz after working for<lb />three seasons as Iowa StateTs quar-<lb /><lb />terbacks coach. Holtz and Fitch<lb />previously worked together for 10<lb />seasons, five each at Connecticut<lb />and South Carolina beginning in<lb />1994. Fitch will handle most of the<lb />play calling, according to Holtz.<lb /><lb />oT hired him as an offen-<lb />sive coordinator and as a quar-<lb />terback coach,? said Holtz.<lb />I think coach Shank [offensive<lb />coordinator Steve Shankweiler]<lb />has done a great job the last two<lb />years but has had more on his plate<lb />than he can say grace over with the<lb />five offensive linemen that he is<lb />trying to put on the field.?<lb /><lb />What spring practice does<lb />for the coaching staff is allow for<lb />depth chart changes as well as<lb />allowing position changes. The<lb />week old depth chart that was<lb />handed out to members of the press<lb /><lb />_at the luncheon was already out<lb /><lb />of date due to fierce competition<lb />according to Holtz. :<lb /><lb />The depth chart has also been<lb />turned upside down due to inju-<lb />ries. Linebackers Pierre Bell and<lb />Quentin Cotton will both miss<lb />spring practice after having<lb />shoulder surgery. Ronald Wright,<lb />a defensive back for the Pirates,<lb />will also miss practices after being<lb />injured participating on the ECU<lb />track team; Stacy Walls also will<lb />be missing in action.<lb /><lb />Tight ends Martin Tanski<lb />and Jay Sonnhalter will also miss<lb />spring practice after being injured<lb />most of the last half of the 2006<lb />season as well. Offensive lineman _<lb />Willie Barton will be out as well<lb />to deal with some undisclosed<lb />personal issues. :<lb /><lb />A far more serious injury was<lb />sustained by offensive lineman<lb />Terrence Campbell. Holtz made<lb />it public at the press conference<lb />that Campbell suffered a situation<lb />involving his heart earlier in the<lb />week. Little is known about how<lb />serious this injury is at the moment<lb />but Campbell is currently resting<lb />in the hospital.<lb /><lb />On a positive note, Holtz men-<lb />tioned UNC defensive line trans-<lb />fer Khalif Mitchell, whom he<lb />thinks fans will come to know well<lb /><lb />Tar Heels sink Pirates<lb /><lb />ECU looks ahead<lb /><lb />to second home<lb /><lb />tournament this<lb />weekend<lb /><lb />ROBERT MATTHEW PARKS<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />The ECU softball team lost a<lb />hard-fought game to the Univer-<lb />sity of North Carolina Tar Heels<lb />38-1 last night.<lb /><lb />The Pirates sent out ace Keli<lb />Harrell, who had pitched a no-<lb />hitter against St. JohnTs over the<lb />weekend, to face the Tar Heels.<lb /><lb />Harrell gave her usual solid<lb />performance holding UNC to just<lb />one run over the first five innings.<lb />The Pirate offense was able to<lb />muster one run off of the Tar Heels<lb />and found the game tied 1-1 in the<lb />top of the sixth inning when ECU<lb />Head Coach Tracey Kee decided<lb />to pull Harrell from the game and<lb />insert freshman Toni Paisley.<lb /><lb />Kee made a similar move over<lb />the weekend in the Baymont Inn<lb />&amp; Suite Pirate Classic champion-<lb />ship game against Appalachian<lb />State and found success.
