They agree that the<lb />Playboy myth probably began even<lb />before McMillenTs arrival and sub-<lb />sequent introduction.<lb /><lb />oTTve talked to alumnus from the<lb />70s and they say that the reputation<lb />was here then, too,? Morphet said.<lb /><lb />Morphet provided counseling<lb /><lb />MCT<lb /><lb />Students socialize at a bar near the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. According to a 2001<lb /><lb />*<lb /><lb />survey on drinking and partying, ECU rates almost the same as other schools in the nation.<lb /><lb />for Patrick McMahon, also known<lb />as the DJ Crash on Raleigh-based<lb />rock station 96.1 FM, when he was<lb />a freshman.<lb /><lb />oWhen I started my freshman<lb />year... I got hammered, fell off<lb />a bus. at the top of College Hill,<lb />blocked traffic and was taken to<lb />the hospital, all at 5:30 p.m. on a<lb />Tuesday. I nearly died. My BAC<lb />[blood alcohol content] was .31. I<lb />am mortified by what I did then and<lb />thatTs what worries me sometimes<lb />about ECUTs reputation. I went<lb />into ECU thinking I had to act that<lb />way,T McMahon said in an e-mail.<lb /><lb />oProbation, housing restriction,<lb />drug and alcohol screenings, even<lb />the help of Bob Morphet kept me<lb />out of trouble for the most part<lb />after that. The administration was<lb />overly generous in not kicking me<lb />out of school.?<lb /><lb />McMahon was a senior major-<lb />ing in communication in 2002<lb />when the Playboy list featuring ECU<lb />was published.<lb /><lb />oIf remember correctly, I might<lb />have just graduated, or was about to<lb />graduate, when the list was put out<lb />but it was ajoke. Everyone was jump-<lb />ing around all proud that we made<lb />the official list but did you really<lb />read it? Other than the part about<lb />the baseball fieldTs ojungle? (RIP),<lb />I just laughed at it,? McMahon said.<lb /><lb />Alfred Smith, commander of the<lb />campus safety division at ECU, said<lb />that the party reputation stretched<lb />all the way to Jacksonville during<lb />his days as a Marine at Camp<lb />Lejeune in the late 1980s.<lb /><lb />oT heard about it then, that<lb />ECU could out-drink and out-<lb />party anyone,? Smith said. oAll the<lb />guys would go to Greenville on the<lb />weekend and would come back and<lb />talk about it.?<lb /><lb />McMillen and Morphet said<lb />that results of a survey conducted<lb />in 2001 on drinking and party-<lb />ing show that ECU rates almost<lb />exactly the same as other schools<lb />in the nation.<lb /><lb />oIf you get on Facebook you see<lb />the exact same scenes of students<lb />partying at other schools. ItTs just<lb />different faces,? Morphet said.<lb /><lb />o(The drinkingT] itTs not some-<lb />thing, if it is different, that can be<lb />measured. In terms of what they<lb />say they do itTs the same as other<lb />institutions,? McMillen said.<lb /><lb />The problem here seems to be<lb />students perception of how much<lb />other students drink.<lb /><lb />oThe perception by college<lb />students of their peersT drinking is<lb />usually worse, but at ECU it is far<lb />worse,? McMillen said.<lb /><lb />In essence what the survey<lb />showed was that ECU students<lb />donTt see themselves as partying<lb />more than other schools. They think<lb />that everyone around them does.<lb /><lb />oThe perception is greater than<lb />the reality,T Morphet said.<lb /><lb />Smith echoed his sentiments.<lb />oItTs a perception, itTs a myth and<lb /><lb />see REPUTATION page A2<lb /><lb />Eating Disorder and Body Image Awareness<lb />oWeek begins with some personal pampering<lb /><lb />A free massage from Holistic Health Practitioners is given at the party.<lb /><lb />Educational events<lb />raise awareness,<lb />confidence<lb /><lb />CARMIN BLACK<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />Eating disorders are becoming<lb />more and more prevalent among<lb />college age men and women, which<lb />is why leaders from ECUTs Campus<lb />Recreation and Wellness and the<lb />Center for Counseling and Student<lb />Development are hosting a week long<lb />series of events for Eating Disorder<lb />and Body Image Awareness Week.<lb /><lb />Eating Disorder and Body<lb />Image Awareness Week runs from<lb />Feb. 25 through March 3 and kicked<lb />off Monday night in MendenhallTs<lb />great room with a Pamper Party.<lb /><lb />The Pamper Party included free<lb />massages given by Holistic Health<lb />Practitioners, makeup and skin<lb />care products by Beauty Control<lb />cosmetics, as. well as door prizes<lb />and informational booths set up by<lb />the ECU Healthy Pirates and the<lb />Student Dietetic Association.<lb /><lb />oThe purpose of having a<lb />pamper party was to provide educa-<lb />tion on the topics of eating disorder<lb />and body image, but not only to<lb />provide education but give students<lb />services that make them feel good<lb />about themselves just as they are,?<lb />said Tara Barber, assistant director<lb /><lb />of nutrition services for Campus<lb />Recreation Wellness.<lb /><lb />As fun as the activities at<lb />Pamper Party were, the heart of this<lb />event seemed to lay in the words of<lb />the volunteers working the infor-<lb />mational booths.<lb /><lb />oMy father has diabetes and<lb />my friend had an eating disorder,<lb />everywhere you turn there are<lb />people who need help and this is why<lb />I'm here and why I want to become<lb />a nutritionist,T said Lee Lamb,<lb />junior nutrition and dietetics major<lb />and SDA volunteer chairperson on<lb />her personal reasons for coming<lb />out to educate others about eating<lb />disorders and nutrition awareness.<lb /><lb />Just like Lamb, it seemed that<lb />each person who was running a<lb />booth had a story to tell.<lb /><lb />All the volunteers were either<lb />able to provide advice about nutri-<lb />tion or tell about how an eating<lb />disorder had affected their life either<lb />indirectly though things like the<lb />media or advertisements or more<lb />close to home with a friend or them-<lb />selves struggling with this epidemic.<lb /><lb />Just ask Ashley Arens, the<lb />sophomore psychology major whose<lb />confident demeanor might very well<lb />make her the last person anyone<lb />would ever guess struggled with<lb />an eating disorder or any type of<lb />negative body image.<lb /><lb />see PAMPER page A2<lb /><lb />College of<lb />Education<lb />recelves<lb />award for<lb />collaboration<lb /><lb />(ECU News Bureau)"The<lb />College of Education at East<lb />Carolina University has received<lb />a national award for its collabora-<lb />tion with community colleges to<lb />respond to the demand for more<lb />rural teachers.<lb /><lb />ECU received the oBest<lb />Practice Award for Collabora-<lb />tion with Community Colleges?<lb />Feb. 27 from the American Asso-<lb />ciation of Colleges for Teacher<lb />Education at the organizationTs<lb />annual meeting in New York.<lb />ECUTs collaborative effort<lb />is known as Wachovia Partner-<lb />ship East.<lb /><lb />oEast Carolina University<lb />recognizes the importance of<lb />working closely with commu-<lb />nity colleges to support teacher<lb />candidates through their entire<lb />preparation from the commu-<lb />nity college to completion of a<lb />four-year degree,? said Sharon<lb />P. Swope said.<lb /><lb />Entering its fifth year, Wacho-<lb />via Partnership East aims to ful-<lb />fill the high demand for public<lb />school teachers across the region.<lb />Sponsored by the Wachovia<lb />Foundation, the consortium con-<lb />sists of 18 community colleges, a<lb />private college, an Air Force base<lb />and 34 public school systems in<lb />eastern North Carolina.<lb /><lb />The program, offered through<lb />the CollegeTs department of<lb />Curriculum and Instruction,<lb />enrolls 234 students, offers<lb />degree programs in elemen-<lb />tary and special education. It is<lb />designed to accommodate both<lb />non-traditional and working stu-<lb />dents through on-site and online<lb />instruction.<lb /><lb />With more than 1,350<lb />students, the College of Education _<lb />is one of the exemplary programs<lb />in North Carolina, according to<lb />the State Board of EducationTs<lb />Higher Education Performance<lb />Report, and receives numerous<lb />grants every year to address the<lb />stateTs teacher shortage.<lb /><lb />In 2002, the college received<lb />the Christa McAuliffe Exem-<lb />plary Teacher Education Award<lb />for its Latham Clinical Schools<lb />Network.<lb /><lb />Governors: Education, workplace must change<lb /><lb />(AP)"Globalization has come<lb />to every hometown, every school<lb />and every workplace, but students<lb />and workers are not given the tools<lb />to keep up, governors reluctantly<lb />agreed Tuesday.<lb /><lb />ItTs past time for a sweep-<lb />ing transformation of education,<lb />worker training and economic<lb />development, governors said,<lb />ending a four-day National Goy-<lb />ernors AssociationTs meeting with<lb />a call for a national commitment<lb />to change.<lb /><lb />Everyone talks about global-<lb />ization and international compe-<lb />tition, but itTs time for concerted<lb />action, said Arizona Gov. Janet<lb />Napolitano. The changes are<lb />ounder our feet. On the ground<lb />under us, right now,? she said.<lb /><lb />Governors set out a framework<lb />for what they termed innovation,<lb />and hope to get federal support to<lb />include their ideas in legislation<lb /><lb />now in Congress on work force<lb />training, education, and research<lb />and development. Among the ideas:<lb /><lb />"Create federal ocompetitive<lb />innovation grants? to encourage<lb />states to develop regional hubs<lb />that build on existing strengths,<lb />like computer development in<lb />North CarolinaTs Raleigh-Durham<lb />area.<lb /><lb />"Refocus on science, technol-<lb />ogy, engineering, math and for-<lb />eign language proficiency. They<lb />are seeking programs to encour-<lb />age students and teachers in those<lb />subject matters.<lb /><lb />"Make worker train-<lb />ing more flexible, coordinate<lb />training with regional needs<lb />and make progress measurable.<lb /><lb />The aim is more skilled stu-<lb />dents and workers, higher-paying<lb />jobs, and a more vibrant economy.<lb /><lb />Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-<lb />Tenn., told governors Tuesday that<lb /><lb />the demands of competitiveness<lb />were going to drive improvements<lb />in energy and health care, but that<lb />they won't come without costs and<lb />turmoil.<lb /><lb />oOur companies canTt keep up<lb />in the world if their health care<lb />costs are too much. The pressures<lb /><lb />of competitiveness? will force<lb /><lb />change, he said.<lb /><lb />The key is improving educa-<lb />tion, and to align it better with<lb />the needs of business so students<lb />come out of high schools, commu-<lb />nity colleges, vocational schools<lb />and higher universities with the<lb />knowledge for todayTs business<lb />world, said Kansas Gov. Kathleen<lb />Sebelius, a Democrat.<lb /><lb />oWe are really falling far<lb />behind other countries in the<lb />world with our skill set for work-<lb />ers,? she said.<lb /><lb />Students in many other indus-<lb />trial countries are better educated<lb /><lb />than American students, said Wil-<lb />liam H. Schmidt, a Michigan State<lb />University professor who studies<lb />education.<lb /><lb />By the end of eighth grade,<lb />students elsewhere are two years<lb />ahead of American students, he<lb />said. oThese children, we're put-<lb />ting them at a disadvantage. This<lb />makes it more than an economic<lb />issue, it makes it a moral issue,?<lb />Schmidt said.<lb /><lb />Meetings over the four-day<lb />conference hammered the point.<lb />School teachers, business lead-<lb />ers, scientists, pollsters all deliv-<lb />ered the same message"over-<lb />haul school curriculums, retrain<lb />workers and revamp economic<lb />development so that businesses<lb />build upon each other, rather<lb />than pit one state against<lb />another.<lb /><lb />They heard from Dean Kamen,<lb />the inventor of the Segway; Robert<lb /><lb />Rubin, the former Treasury secre-<lb />tary during the Clinton adminis-<lb />tration; President BushTs top trade<lb />negotiator, Susan Schwab, and<lb />many more.<lb /><lb />Governors sought support for<lb />more federal help from Alexander<lb />and Rep. Bart Gordon, D-Tenn.,<lb />chairman of the House Science<lb />Committee.<lb /><lb />But the biggest challenge<lb />is changing the mindset of the<lb />country, said Rhode Island GOP<lb />Gov. Don Carcieri, so that people<lb />embrace everything from the math<lb />and science skills needed to work<lb />in the 2ist century to the larger<lb />changes needed in health care<lb />and energy.<lb /><lb />oThereTs a huge sense of<lb />urgency about this,? Carcieri said.<lb />Scientists are othe brainpower for<lb />all of our nationTs capacities ... ITm<lb />frustrated about how we commu-<lb />nicate that and how drive it.?<lb /><lb /></p>

Smith said.<lb /><lb />Nevertheless, something has to<lb />trigger the perception.<lb /><lb />oAll that said, transfer students<lb />relate that there is something dif-<lb />ferent at ECU than other places,?<lb />McMillen said. :<lb /><lb />Morphet pointed out the nature<lb />of Playboy's rankings.<lb /><lb />oI take the rankings with a<lb />grain of salt. I donTt think they did<lb />a sophisticated research project,?<lb />Morphet said.<lb /><lb />He said that one concern asso-<lb />ciated with the party reputation is<lb />that it devalues a degree from ECU.<lb /><lb />McMahon agrees.<lb /><lb />oYm in the Triangle now and<lb />you know how many people care<lb />about ECUTs reputation as a party<lb />school and cheer about that? No<lb />one. No one cares. Not NCSU,<lb />not UNC, not ECU alumni, not<lb />anyone. I have to fight stereotypes<lb />everyday about being an ECU grad<lb />and it angers me to no end we still<lb />donTt get the respect we deserve,?<lb />McMahon said.<lb /><lb />Since 2002, several changes<lb />within the school and state laws<lb />have helped the attempt to curtail<lb />drinking on and around campus.<lb /><lb />A zero tolerance policy has been<lb />implemented in the dorms meaning<lb />students can be kicked out upon<lb />their first alcohol or drug offense.<lb />During orientation, more informa-<lb />tion is being provided to freshmen<lb />and transfer students about the<lb />dangers associated with drinking<lb />and drug use.<lb /><lb />New laws make it easier for<lb />police officers to nab underage<lb />drinkers while also requiring a<lb />permit to buy a keg.<lb /><lb />McMahon said that an underage<lb />drinking citation while he was in<lb /><lb />school would have been a slap on the ~<lb /><lb />wrist and a $25 fine. Now, that same<lb />offense carries a fine of over $100<lb />and a misdemeanor charge that goes<lb />on the studentTs permanent record.<lb />The same holds true of simple pos-<lb />session of drugs like marijuana.<lb /><lb />Smith, McMillen and Morphet<lb />all feel measures such as these have<lb />helped reduce the kind of partying<lb />that got ECU ranked in thefirst place.<lb /><lb />oWithout a doubt itTs gotten<lb />better,? Smith said. But it still needs<lb />to get better.?<lb /><lb />Barry Knox, bassist for<lb />Greenville-based band Parmalee,<lb />has toured across the nation.<lb /><lb />He tends to disagree with<lb />McMillen, Morphet and SmithTs<lb />assessment that the partying has<lb />diminished since 2002.<lb /><lb />oITve been to so many college<lb />towns. Greenville parties just as<lb /><lb />hard if not harder. ITve had friends -<lb /><lb />come out from L.A. and be surprised.<lb />They'll tell me, hey, you guys party<lb />Just as hard as us,? Knox said. oThere<lb />hasnTt been much of change [since<lb />2002]. If there was a change, I'd say<lb />it was around 92 or 93. It was kick-<lb />ing back then and I donTt think we<lb />party as hard as they did back then<lb />but we're still going strong.?<lb /><lb />Knox said that there may be<lb />one crucial factor that separates<lb />Greenville from other college towns.<lb /><lb />?The chicks here are so much<lb />better. ItTs more fun cause thereTs<lb />more chicks,? Knox said, citing<lb />another, perhaps more flattering,<lb />reputation with another (though<lb />still unscientific) rating "ECU did<lb />rank ninth in schools with the hot-<lb />test girls in a 2000 Playboy list.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />news@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />PAMPER continued from Al<lb /><lb />However, Arens was once one of<lb />the millions of people who each year<lb />battle with this epidemic.<lb /><lb />Sitting at a booth put up by one<lb />WomenTs Studies class, Arens was<lb />at the Pamper Party to talk with<lb />anyone who would listen about the<lb />importance of self appreciation and<lb />healthy eating habits.<lb /><lb />Arens, who said that in 10th<lb />grade she once lost 30 pounds in<lb />two months, attributes the onset of<lb /><lb />her disorder to her parentTs divorce<lb />and trying to constantly, compete<lb />with oskinnier friends.?<lb /><lb />oWhen people saw me loos-<lb />ing weight I felt encouraged, not<lb />like I needed help, but I didnTt<lb />realize J had a disorder until<lb />my friends started saying things,?<lb />said Arens.<lb /><lb />Arens attributes her ability to<lb />overcome her battle with food to self<lb />appreciation and falling in love. <lb />Ion<lb /><lb />WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 28, 2007<lb /><lb />Page A3<lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />To the guy that found my OneCard<lb />downtown and returned it,<lb />thank you so much!<lb /><lb />{ What's your opinion? }<lb /><lb />ane<lb /><lb />Walk a mile<lb /><lb />in a waitressT<lb />shoes<lb /><lb />One way to impress a potential<lb />employer<lb /><lb />LISA URAM<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />In the fast paced world of the 21st century, most<lb />people opt for going out to eat instead of taking the<lb />time to cook a home cooked meal. ItTs no surprise,<lb />then, that according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Sta-<lb />tistics, food and beverage servers and other related<lb />workers hold over seven million jobs in America.<lb /><lb />T These jobs are mostly held by teenagers and students<lb /><lb />between the ages of 16 and 25, about six times the<lb />proportion for all workers.<lb /><lb />Unfortunately, even in 2007, most of America<lb />still remains oblivious to the etiquette involved in<lb />dining out. For instance, the average hourly pay for<lb />a waiter in North Carolina was recently raised from<lb />2.13 to 3.13 per hour. 2<lb /><lb />Still, after taxes are taken from their checks,<lb />the remaining balance is always zero. In addition,<lb />servers are required to claim 1§ percent of their<lb />sales, regardless of the amount of tips they receive.<lb />So if you are planning on enjoying a nice dinner<lb />out, remember that the service you receive is also a<lb />part of your experience and should account for the<lb />amount of money you intend to spend, usually 15 to<lb />20 percent of your total bill.<lb /><lb />There is also a common misconception about the<lb />demands of a waiter. In most restaurants, servers<lb />can work anywhere from four to 12 hours at a time<lb />without sitting down.<lb /><lb />On a day-to-day basis, waiters are faced with<lb /><lb />countless demands from managers, other employees _<lb /><lb />and customers. It is way more than taking orders and<lb />keeping drinks full. In fact, Health magazine lists<lb />being a waiter as one of the top 10 most stressful<lb />Jobs in the U.S.<lb /><lb />Being courteous to your waiter when dining out<lb />isnTt always just about ethics; it may even get you<lb />hired in the company of your dreams. According to<lb />an article that was published'in USA Today in April,<lb />2006, how you treat your waiter predicts a lot about<lb />character.<lb /><lb />Bill Swanson, CEO and the first to write down<lb />this innovative theory, goes on to say, oA person who is<lb />nice to you but rude to the waiter, or to others, is not a<lb />nice person.? Well, doesnTt this make sense? How can<lb />anyone claim to have good character, only to manipu-<lb />late those with less wealth or power than oneself?<lb /><lb />In all our lives, we will either be a waiter, know<lb />a waiter, be waited on bya waiter or be judged by<lb />how we treat the waiter. ItTs about time that America<lb />becomes more educated on the people who respect-<lb />fully take the time to make our lives simpler. After<lb />all, the majority of waiters in America are in col-<lb />lege, just like us, trying to make a better life for<lb />themselves. ;<lb /><lb />Turn off<lb /><lb />the news<lb /><lb />_ The cure to the common<lb />conversation<lb /><lb />JUSTIN SUMMERS.<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />It seems like we spend a lot of time in our lives<lb /><lb />talking and debating about issues we hear about in the<lb /><lb />news. Recently it was Britney SpearsT baldness and/or<lb /><lb />- addiction problems, loony astronauts in diapers and Bill<lb /><lb />OTReillyTs analysis of who should get custody of Anna<lb />Nicole SmithTs trim corpse.<lb /><lb />Before that, it was Paris Hilton and her drunken<lb />endeavors, or Tom Cruise going nuts on Oprah.<lb /><lb />There was Angelina JolieTs exciting adoption of a<lb />bunch of Malawian babies, and the Duke Lacrosse scandal.<lb /><lb />Even further back in my memory I can remember<lb />others, like Natalee Holloway, JonBenét Ramsey and<lb />a whole host of other pretty white girls who somehow<lb />remain important news stories for months, even years.<lb /><lb />We know in our hearts that these stories are use-<lb />less and that they are slowly rotting our brains, but<lb />we find ourselves absorbing them like spilt beer on a<lb />paper towel. I am proof of this as I donTt even watch<lb />the news and I could name ten pseudo-news stories off<lb />the top of my head.<lb /><lb />We are ingrained with useless onews? and opinions<lb />about stories that no one should care about and, even<lb />worse, are the people like me, who fuel the fire by<lb />claiming these stories are stupid while secretly being<lb />fixated on them.<lb /><lb />I have a suggestion to all of you out there who are<lb />looking to rid themselves ofthis plague and if you heed<lb />my words you may never feel obligated to talk about one<lb />of these stories in small talk ever again. Turn off the news!<lb /><lb />Imagine the things you could accomplish if you<lb />turned off that glowing box and did something pro-<lb />ductive with your life, like reading. Now thereTs a novel<lb />idea, reading! When you read a book or the news you<lb />are not force fed information from some hollow media<lb />pundit and you can actually form an opinion yourself<lb />about what is important.<lb /><lb />I have realized from the responses to my prior<lb />articles that the majority of students here rely solely on<lb />television and mainstream media outlets for their news<lb />and rather than having a carefully formed opinion; most<lb />simply regurgitate the rhetoric they see on TV. Ina true<lb />democracy, it is important to find out for oneself what<lb />is going on in the world not just accept that what you<lb />see on the idiot box is a relevant news story.<lb /><lb />Is Anna Nicole's dead body really important for<lb />the nation? Will they ever find Natalee Holloway?<lb /><lb />The answer to both of these questions is ono,? and if .<lb /><lb />you really wanted to entertain yourself I suggest to<lb />you turn off your television and go to the library and<lb />check out a book.<lb /><lb />There is a world of opinions out there, why align<lb />yours with the likes of Bill OTReilly, Nancy Grace and<lb />Anderson Cooper?<lb /><lb />MCT<lb /><lb />SoFTWARE SUITE...<lb /><lb />GooGLE PREVIEWS Tis ONLINE<lb /><lb />ase yt 2-23-07<lb /><lb />The East Carolinian does not endorse statements made in Pirate Rants. There was no war on terror, not that you<lb />can really fight wars against radical ideologies...<lb />The people who embody them, yes you can fight<lb />them, but fighting ideas is a much tougher proposi-<lb />tion... There wasnTt a war in Iraq, and Afghanistan,<lb />with wars against Iran, China, South Korea and<lb />probably Cuba (easy pickinsT once Fidel Castro buys<lb />the farm) on the horizon.<lb /><lb />It became obvious this past week that Barack<lb />Obama and Hillary Clinton are so concerned about<lb />their image that theyTd rather fight to the death<lb />over that than address the real issues... of course<lb />thatTs something Hillary has been doing for ages.<lb /><lb />For those of you who didnTt know about this,<lb />David Geffen, a media mogul and long time Clinton<lb />family supporter, made several comments to the New<lb />York Times early last week after dumping Clinton<lb />to host a $1.3 million fundraiser for Barack Obama.<lb />In the article Geffen dubbed Hillary as polarizing,<lb />overly ambitious and obviously scripted. ~<lb /><lb />oItTs not a very big thing to say, I made a<lb />mistakeT on the war, and typical of Hillary<lb />Clinton that she canTt,? Geffen said. oEverybody<lb />in politics lies, but they do it with such ease,<lb />itTs troubling,?<lb /><lb />Even more troubling is how quickly both can-<lb />didates found their way back to the name-calling<lb />politics of America today. See, in the Senate, thatTs<lb />how it works, if things look bad for you, you attack<lb />someone else.<lb /><lb />Not even a month into their political campaigns<lb />for the Presidency"both of which, by the way, face<lb />the obvious adversity of neither candidate being a<lb />white male candidate... and the sad truth of all of<lb />this is the fact that this hurdle will make more of a<lb />difference in two years than what either is saying<lb />right now"both candidates have already left their<lb />out-of-the-gates promises to make this a clean and<lb />non-personal race.<lb /><lb />All the while John Edwards pressed on with<lb />the issues, subtly reminding us while Hillary and<lb />Barack have been doing practically nothing in the<lb />Senate other than making speeches and emptily<lb />complaining about President Bush and the Govern-<lb />ment, Fmr. Senator Edwards was out doing real,<lb />substantial work. It is obvious to me and many<lb />others that John Edwards is not out to make this.<lb />a personal battle. John Edwards is not seeking<lb />to defeat the Republican Party. He is seeking to<lb />change America.<lb /><lb />This is why I think Senators have such a hard<lb />time becoming Presidents... itTs because they<lb />typically donTt do anything except argue and<lb />cast votes that donTt really represent their<lb />constituencies. Most of them have their interests<lb />split between that and their other professional<lb />careers.<lb /><lb />Now I know some of you are saying oBut John<lb />Edwards was a Senator!? While this is true, since<lb />John Edwards left the Senate for an unsuccessful<lb />Presidential, then Vice Presidential candidacy in<lb />2004, he has worked tireless to cure this nation<lb />of poverty. Some might remember John EdwardsT<lb />speech regarding the two Americas in Iowa in Janu-<lb />ary 2004, where he eloquently recited some of the<lb />most worrisome trends in modern America.<lb /><lb />oToday, under George W. Bush, there are two<lb />Americas, not one: One America that does the<lb />work, another that reaps the reward. One America<lb />that pays the taxes, another America that gets the<lb />tax breaks. One America"middle-class America<lb />"whose needs Washington has long forgot-<lb />ten, another America"narrow-interest America<lb />"whose every wish is WashingtonTs command.<lb />One America that is struggling to get by, another<lb />America that can buy anything it wants, even a<lb />Congress and a President.?<lb /><lb />Now doesnTt that seem a little more promising<lb />that HillaryTs constant criticisms of the White<lb />House without offering a better solution? It seems<lb />stronger than BarackTs... well I am not really sure<lb />what Barack is saying, I canTt see past the hype.<lb /><lb />This election seems more like the Grammys to<lb />me. An event where bands who"while opinion-<lb />ated, ready to speak their thoughts, and beauti-<lb />ful"couldnTt sound less like a group of wailing<lb />banshees are rampant.<lb /><lb />Ironically, they get all the attention, honors, and<lb />awards, and take all the attention from the good<lb />bands that no one hears about. While the Dixie<lb />Chicks won eight awards, I award them with a ninth:<lb />Most likely to get a lot of awards because stupid<lb />overly liberal judges feel itTs some sort of vindica-<lb />tion of the words they spoke about President Bush.<lb /><lb />Likewise, election 2008, an event where politi-<lb />cians who"while opinionated, ready to speak their<lb />minds, and... well slightly more attractive than<lb />old men with hair coming out of their ears, and<lb />Barack Obama"get all the media attention, awards<lb />and honors. While all the while being constantly<lb />praised by overly liberal pundits who feel itTs some<lb />kind of vindication that someone is stumping what<lb />they believe and have been saying for years. The<lb />parallels are frightening.<lb /><lb /></p>

The<lb />door is open and the staff on duty that evening wel-<lb />comes me, as they call for a van to swing by Fletcher<lb />to pick me up. ItTs interesting to see the students<lb />behind the radio, as their voices will be heard for the<lb />remainder of the night. ITm told the van has arrived<lb />and I walk out to meet Nathaniel Steward, sophomore<lb />business management major.<lb /><lb />12:37 a.m." We make our way to the van and I'm<lb />informed that there is someone already being trans-<lb />ported who is ready to be dropped off. I climb in the<lb />side of the SafeRide van and immediately take. note<lb />of how clean everything is. Even though the van has<lb />been through night after night of constant driving, it<lb />still smells as if it was just driven off the lot.<lb /><lb />Naked fruit drinks and bottles of water fill the<lb />cup holders near the radio, which plays a combination<lb />of rock and roll and country music throughout the<lb />night. Sitting in the passenger seat is Ashley Coldn,<lb />a junior exercise physiology major. While Stew drives<lb />the SafeRide van from location to location, AshleyTs<lb />job is to record incoming calls, including destinations<lb />and studentTs names.<lb /><lb />12:51 a.m. " We drop the student off and receive<lb />our next call. As I soon find out, most calls of the<lb />night direct our van to the R2 lot downtown. We<lb />arrive sooner than expected as vehicle traffic is lightly<lb />scattered from street to street. Stew notes how itTs<lb />a common theme to wait sometimes up to 10 or 15<lb />minutes for the callers to actually make their way<lb />to the van.<lb /><lb />We sit and watch as students pour out of bus<lb />after bus, with people locked arm in arm making<lb />their way downtown. Eventually, the otraffic? we're<lb />waiting for make their way to our van and present<lb />their OneCards.<lb /><lb />1:12 a.m. " Two females make their way onto my<lb />seat and we exchange names and handshakes. After<lb /><lb />A typical evening for the SafeRide drivers can often last into the wee hours of the morning without a break.<lb /><lb />confirming their destination, we head back in the<lb />direction of campus as we strike up a conversation<lb />about our favorite music.<lb /><lb />1:20 a.m. " With no traffic for nearly 20 minutes<lb />we get a bite to eat and drive around campus. Stew<lb />tells me regardless of where we drive downtown,<lb />someone, somewhere will always prove they can<lb />read by shouting the words oSafe Ride? written on<lb />the side of our van.<lb /><lb />This point is soon proven. We cross Fifth Street<lb />and no sooner than we turn down Cotanche a group of<lb />males point at our van and shout for everyone to hear,<lb />oSafe Ride!? Stew and Ashley recognize them and we<lb />soon realize they were already in the process of call-<lb />ing in for our services. Without any other traffic, we<lb />take their OneCards and they pile in the van.<lb /><lb />1:29 a.m. " We drive the three guys to their apart-<lb />ments and I find that one of them is a regular driver<lb />for SafeRide, while another is a prospective applicant<lb />for the position. We<lb />have to tell those waiting students why we canTt take<lb />them right away, while we pile in the others.?<lb /><lb />Continuing our adventure through the night<lb />we pick up a few more groups off campus before<lb />returning to the R2 lot. Ashley had described early<lb />that night, how sometimes students will try to get a<lb />ride without calling in beforehand, by asking where<lb />SafeRide is heading.<lb /><lb />Seeing me, Sean Cybrowski, a junior finance<lb />major, asks where J am heading. I reply that I am there<lb />to actually record the nights of events, following Stew<lb />and Ashley around, with the intention of clearing<lb />some misconceptions of the SafeRide system.<lb /><lb />oItTs pretty straight forward,? said Cybrowski. oItTs<lb />free and not only saves you from potential disaster,<lb />but saves you from worry. UAB comes into the<lb />tournament as the No. 2 seed and if<lb />the Pirates and the Blazers both win<lb />their quarterfinal match-ups with<lb />lower seeds, the squads will meet<lb />for the third time this season in the<lb />semifinals. UAB won both regular<lb />season meetings with ECU in a<lb />home-and-home series, with each<lb />game coming down to the wire.<lb /><lb />In an early season match-up in<lb />Birmingham, Ala. the teams traded<lb />blows in a defensive struggle, with<lb />UAB pulling out a 59-52 win. A<lb />few weeks later the teams met in<lb />Minges Coliseum for a game that<lb />saw the Pirates leading for the<lb />duration before the Blazers pulled<lb />away and won 73-69 in overtime.<lb /><lb />oThey [UAB] are definitely<lb />capable of taking us again, but<lb />you know-I think at this point in<lb />time in the season we're ready and<lb />able to compete with anybody in<lb />the league,? said Baldwin-Tener.<lb />oHopefully we'll be able to do that.?<lb /><lb />Young echoed this sentiment of<lb />dealing with the newfound rivals.<lb /><lb />oDefinitely, we're going to beat<lb />them this time though because the<lb />last two times we just slipped up.<lb />And now the seasonTs basically<lb /><lb />mound this season, Harrell has been<lb /><lb />-asource of irreplaceable leadership in<lb /><lb />the clubhouse.<lb /><lb />oKeli has really stepped up as a<lb />senior. She has had a great career<lb />here but the growth in maturity ITve<lb />seen from her junior year to now has<lb />been priceless,? said Kee. oAny time<lb />you can throw a no-hitter at this level<lb />it says a lot about your pitcher. She is<lb />a dominating force on this level.?<lb /><lb />Behind HarrellTs effort the<lb />Pirates rallied offensively as well.<lb /><lb />oWe just came together as a<lb />team. We were seeing the ball a little<lb />bit better and we had confidence up<lb />at bat,? said Baggett, referring to the<lb />offense in the second game against<lb />St. JohnTs. oWe knew we needed<lb />that win.?<lb /><lb />oWe needed to gain our confi-<lb />dence back and that is what we did in<lb />that game,? said junior utility player<lb />Erin St. Ledger.<lb /><lb />The win put the Pirates in posi-<lb /><lb />Freshman utility infielder Cristen Aona guns down a baserunner. We canTt<lb />lose any leads. We have to win now.<lb />ItTs definitely going to be revenge if<lb />we see UAB.?<lb /><lb />Baldwin-Tener sees the loss<lb />to the Blazers at home as the true<lb />turning point in the season.<lb /><lb />oI would say maybe the double<lb />overtime loss to UAB. J think it<lb />really had an effect on our team.<lb />We picked it up after that and won<lb />some games,? said Baldwin-Tener.<lb /><lb />Senior center Cherie Mills<lb />thinks that the turnaround came<lb />far earlier in the season. After some<lb />tough out of conference losses,<lb />including a defeat in the Caribbean<lb />Classic at the hands of 2006 NIT<lb />Final Four team Pittsburgh, the<lb />Pirates called a team meeting.<lb /><lb />oWe said when we came back<lb />from the Cancun trip right before<lb />Christmas that when we came back<lb />it was going to be a new season,?<lb />said Mills. oWe said itTs conference<lb />time, and right now the recordTs<lb /><lb />Harrell helps Pirates grab championship<lb /><lb />Oo<lb /><lb />Paisley, who came on to close out<lb />the game and the tournament.<lb />oTo win the first home tourna-<lb />ment sets a good tone,? said Paisley.<lb />Coming out of the classic, the<lb />Pirates currently stand at 9-5 on<lb />the season.<lb /><lb />The team now turns their atten-<lb />tion to the University of North<lb />Carolina Tar Heels, who come into<lb />Greenville to play the Pirates at 3<lb />p.m. today.<lb /><lb />oWe're definitely very, very<lb />excited,? St. Ledger said of playing<lb />the Tar Heels. oIt is always one of our<lb />biggest games of the year.?<lb /><lb />The Tar Heels, 8-8 on the year,<lb /><lb />have lost three of their last five<lb /><lb />tion to take on Appalachian State -<lb /><lb />in the championship game, as the<lb />Mountaineers defeated Towson in<lb />their semifinal game.<lb /><lb />The Pirates took it to the Moun-<lb />taineers on Sunday, defeating them<lb />8-1 on the back of yet another<lb />strong performance from Har-<lb /><lb />rell. Harrell pitched five shut out ~<lb /><lb />innings before being replaced by<lb /><lb />games and are looking for revenge<lb />after the Pirates defeated them last<lb />year.on a suicide squeeze.<lb /><lb />oI'm sure they remember that,T<lb />Kee said of last yearTs victory.<lb /><lb />The Pirates will also be hosting<lb />another tournament this weekend<lb />in the Holiday Inn Express Pirate<lb /><lb />Clash. <lb />PAGE As<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN * SPORTS<lb /><lb />WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 2007<lb /><lb />RUGBY continued from A6<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />Tyrrell<lb /><lb />The Pirates have turfed teams all season, and are optimistic about a positive postseason against tough foes.<lb /><lb />through the goalposts for three<lb />points during the course of play.<lb /><lb />The football expression otouch-<lb />down? is a direct derivative of<lb />rugby. In rugby, a player does not<lb />only need to cross the goal line but<lb />also apply downward force onto<lb />the ball and ground, literally touch<lb />the ball down. The extra point<lb />attempt is taken on the same line<lb />that the otouchdown? occurred;<lb />therefore, it is to the teamTs advan-<lb />tage to try to convert between<lb />the goal posts or close to them.<lb /><lb />Like soccer, rugby has a con-<lb />tinuously running clock of 45-<lb />minute halves. When the ball<lb />goes out of bounds there is a<lb /><lb />throw in like soccer, but with an<lb />extra twist. In an attempt to catch,<lb /><lb />the throw in, each team lifts a<lb />player into the air from behind to<lb />catch the ball in mid-flight.<lb /><lb />In rugby, the ball is advanced<lb />either by running or kicking the<lb /><lb />S ball. The way the ball is advanced<lb />&amp;in rugby, with a series of back-<lb /><lb />ward laterals, is like watching<lb /><lb />| 8 black and white footage of an old<lb />&amp; wishbone football team or more<lb /><lb />recently the Nebraska triple<lb /><lb />option that still dominated col-<lb />lege football a decade ago. Except<lb />that in rugby all 15 players take<lb />part in the constant pitching and<lb />running, not just the skill position<lb />players, like in football.<lb /><lb />Team coach Jorge Conte said<lb />that the most enjoyable part of the<lb />club rugby team is the camarade-<lb /><lb />rie both between teammates and<lb /><lb />opposing teams and players.<lb /><lb />oItTs the competition and the<lb />camaraderie,? said Conte. oThe<lb />camaraderie extends beyond just the<lb />field; after the game all the players<lb />from both teams get together and<lb />have a good time in a social setting.<lb />We get to know each other and it<lb />really becomes a type of community<lb />where friends are playing with and<lb />against friends.?<lb /><lb />As of now, the Pirates are<lb />one of the top teams in the south<lb />region of Division II Rugby and<lb />are set to face Georgia Tech in the<lb />regional quarterfinals on March<lb />24. If they win three consecutive<lb />matches in regional competition,<lb />they will be regional champions<lb />and advance to the national<lb />semifinals of Division II rugby.<lb /><lb />This weekend the team will face<lb />Appalachian State again to replay<lb />the match under protest, which<lb />will be their last match before the<lb />regional playoffs.<lb /><lb />The Pirates club rugby team<lb />has its sights set on advancing<lb />deep into postseason play. oWe<lb />only lost to UNC, who is a Divi-<lb />sion I team, by three in the last<lb />minute,? Clapp said.<lb /><lb />Anyone intrigued by rugby<lb />and interested in finding more<lb />information should go to the<lb />ECU Club Sports Web site and<lb />the USA Rugby South Web site at<lb />usarugbysouth.com: The team has<lb />open tryouts and tries to accom-<lb />modate all who have an interest.<lb />A word of warning, the meek<lb />need not apply. Rugby is not just a<lb />contact sport like soccer, but also<lb />a collision sport like football and<lb />hockey except without the pads.<lb />If the thought of colliding with<lb />another person at full speed gets<lb />your adrenaline flowing, then you<lb />should try rugby.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />By 6th grade, an alarming number<lb /><lb />of girls lose interest in math,<lb />science &amp; technology.
