'<lb /><lb />During the first session of the<lb />conference, students were separated<lb />into same sex groups and each group<lb />discussed issues concerning mascu-<lb />linity, relationships, feminism and<lb />self-esteem.<lb /><lb />oWe tried to take a broad spec-<lb />trum of issues facing minorities and<lb />address those issues,? said Michael<lb />Caple, Cultural Awareness chair.<lb />oWe wanted to give people the<lb />knowledge to overcome challenges<lb />they may face in the future.?<lb /><lb />At the symposium, students were<lb />able to listen to many informative<lb />speakers as well.<lb /><lb />Omar Tyree, a best-selling<lb />author and the 2001 NAACP image<lb />award recipient, delivered the key-<lb />note speech at the event.<lb /><lb />Tyree spoke to students about<lb />achieving their dreams and the<lb /><lb />Photo by Levenia T yrrell<lb /><lb />importance of education. He urged<lb />students to make the most of their<lb />time at ECU and become successful,<lb />well-educated people:<lb /><lb />oIt is time for dreams to stop<lb />being dreams and start becoming<lb />reality,? said Tyree.<lb /><lb />Many students attended<lb />the symposium and most felt<lb />that they learned something<lb />from the different activities.<lb /><lb />oI thought the speech by Omar<lb />Tyree was very uplifting and encour-<lb />aging,? said Krystina Belle, sopho-<lb />more clinical laboratory science<lb />major. oI learned a lot from the speaker<lb />and other aspects of this conference.?<lb /><lb />Caple believes that this was a<lb />very important event for students to<lb />attend as part of Black History Month.<lb /><lb />Omar Tyree, 2001 NAACP image award recipient, delivers his keynote<lb /><lb />z<lb /><lb />He said that this symposium will<lb />help empower minority students and<lb />encourage them to become leaders.<lb /><lb />oAs students, we can't just look<lb />at things the way they are presented<lb />to us, we have to dig deep and find<lb />the real meanings,? Caple said. oWith<lb />this conference we tried to address<lb />serious issues and get students to<lb />really think about these things. We<lb />hope that this conference will edu-<lb />cate people and encourage them to<lb />make a positive change in themselves<lb />and in the community.?<lb /><lb />Throughout Black History<lb />Month, Student Union Cultural<lb />Awareness has sponsored many<lb />other events on campus including<lb />movies, plays and concerts.<lb /><lb />Caple said that there has been a<lb /><lb />spee<lb /><lb />te it a<lb /><lb />ch to students at the symposium.<lb /><lb />big turnout at many of the events and<lb />most students have had positive reac-<lb />tions to the different activities.<lb /><lb />The Black History Month Sym-<lb />posium was not an exception as<lb />more than 70 people came out to<lb />attend the workshops and listen to<lb />the speakers.<lb /><lb />oT believe it is really important to<lb />have very strong programs to focus<lb />on empowerment and leadership for<lb />students of color, as well as all stu-<lb />dents who want to hear our message,?<lb />Brown said. oWe wanted to have pro-<lb />grams for Black History Month that<lb />would reach the whole student body<lb /><lb />and I think we achieved that goal.? .<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />news@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />University proposes plus/minus grading scale<lb /><lb />SGA seeks further<lb />information about the<lb />scale<lb /><lb />KIMBERLY BELLAMY<lb />SENIOR WRITER<lb /><lb />Representatives from one of<lb />the faculty-senate committees<lb />came to get feedback from con-<lb />gress members about implement-<lb />ing a plus/minus grading scale.<lb /><lb />Martin Taggart, associate pro-<lb />fessor, and Wendy Sharer, assistant<lb />professor, were the two representa-<lb />tives who serve on the committee, that<lb />came to give congress further infor-<lb />mation about the possible changes.<lb /><lb />The committee has been work-<lb />ing on getting the new grading<lb />policy approved since fall 2005,<lb />according to Sharer.<lb /><lb />The proposal has been sent to<lb />various areas for approval but it still<lb />has to be signed by the chancellor<lb />before it goes into effect.<lb /><lb />Ifapproved by the chancellor, the<lb />plus/minus scale would go into effect<lb />as early as summer 2008.<lb /><lb />Under the new system, students<lb />would now receive an A plus or A<lb />minus instead of an A regardless of<lb />the number grade they earned.<lb /><lb />Sharer and Taggart made efforts<lb />to explain to congress that the new<lb />grading scale would not be imple-<lb />mented to harm anyoneTs GPA but<lb />it would ultimately have a positive<lb />or a negative effect on it.<lb /><lb />oWhat ITve learned is there is<lb />quite a difference from an 80 and<lb />an 89 on a final project,? Taggart<lb /><lb />said when explaining the quality of |<lb /><lb />work that was turned in to receive a<lb />certain grade.<lb /><lb />A congress representative<lb />expressed that it would appear that<lb />a studentTs performance is getting<lb />worse when they start to receive<lb />grades with minuses when they<lb />haven't in the past:<lb /><lb />The committee representa-<lb />tives attempted to clarify that the<lb />grading scale wouldnTt change the<lb />grades as a whole that significantly.<lb /><lb />oItTs still the same low and high<lb />points. We're not changing the way<lb />we assess students,? Sharer said.<lb /><lb />The new grading policy would<lb /><lb />also establish new rules for the<lb />qualifications to apply for a grade<lb />replacement.<lb /><lb />The new grade replacement<lb />policy would apply to grades received<lb />that are a F, D minus, D plus or C<lb />minus according to Sharer.<lb /><lb />Sharer said that part of the deci-<lb />sion to switch to this type of system<lb />was based on the university inspiring<lb />to be like the peer schools within the<lb />UNC system who have this scale<lb />and from studies to that show which<lb />grading scale is most widely used.<lb /><lb />Congress representa-<lb />tives also expressed opposition<lb />to the reason why the univer-<lb />sity moved towards this scale.<lb /><lb />oItTs hard enough as is when we're<lb />going up against others from one of<lb />our peer institutions such as UNC<lb />Chapel Hill, when we're going for a<lb />job after we graduate,? said Ashley<lb />Yopp, congress representative.,<lb /><lb />While the committee represen-<lb /><lb />tatives were trying to outline the<lb /><lb />positive points of going to a plus/<lb />minus grading scale, the Student<lb />Welfare Committee of congress had<lb />already typed up a resolution against<lb /><lb />the change to be voted on that night.<lb /><lb />The congress voted to withhold<lb />from voting on the scale until they<lb />got more of their questions answered<lb />about the possible changes in grading.<lb /><lb />The chancellor agreed that he<lb />wouldn't sign off on the proposal<lb />until he heard a response from the<lb />congress, according to Jon Massachi,<lb />speaker of the congress.<lb /><lb />Further discussion about the<lb />plus/minus scale will be talked<lb />about at the Chat with the Chancel-<lb />lor event, according to Massachi.<lb /><lb />Another change that was dis-<lb />cussed in the congress meeting on<lb />Monday was the term length of the<lb />executive officers of SGA.<lb /><lb />M. Cole Jones, SGA president,<lb />and Keri Brockett, SGA secretary,<lb />addressed this during their executive<lb />reports in the meeting.<lb /><lb />The term length of executive<lb />officers can no longer exceed two<lb />years, according to Brockett.<lb /><lb />This will apply to the president,<lb />vice president, secretary, treasurer<lb />and the speaker of the congress.<lb /><lb />see SGA page A2<lb /><lb />Free health ,<lb />screenings are<lb />available on<lb />campus<lb /><lb />Wellness Wednesdays<lb />attract the ECU<lb />community<lb /><lb />ALYCIA WENDT<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />A testing center for multiple<lb />health issues is more local then the<lb />ECU community may think. Well-<lb />ness Wednesdays offers: different<lb />free health screenings to students<lb />and faculty.<lb /><lb />Wellness Wednesdays was cre-<lb />ated in 2005 by the Campus Well-<lb />ness team, which is part of the<lb />Department of Campus Recreation<lb />and Wellness. Their intent for this<lb />program was to let students, staff<lb />and faculty get involved with the<lb />wellness services and educational<lb />initiatives programs. :<lb /><lb />oWellness Wednesdays have<lb />been very successful in reaching<lb />people who are on different locations<lb />on campus. We have helped people<lb />recognize their risk factors for heart<lb />disease, cancer and other health<lb />issues,? said Director of Campus<lb />Wellness, Karen Warren. 2<lb /><lb />Monthly screenings for different<lb />health issues are scheduled at various<lb />locations across campus.<lb /><lb />Some of the past screenings have<lb />included folic acid awareness, rapid<lb />HIV testing and blood pressure and<lb />cholesterol screenings.<lb /><lb />The next free screening will<lb />be held on March 21 from 11<lb />a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Student<lb />Recreation Center, for diabetes.<lb /><lb />oOur main goal is to go out<lb />and reach the ECU community,<lb />especially those who may not utilize<lb />the Recreation Center on a regular<lb />basis. This initiative shows them the<lb />services we can offer, and will hope-<lb />fully encourage them to utilize our<lb />services,? said Assistant Director of<lb />Campus Wellness Tywanna Jeffries.<lb /><lb />The Campus Wellness Center<lb />offers many other services besides<lb />Wellness Wednesdays. Health edu-<lb />cators and nutritionists are available<lb />to answer questions about health<lb />related matters, plans to improve<lb />oneTs health, alcohol and drugs,<lb />stress and much more.<lb /><lb />The Campus Wellness Center<lb />wants to support and encourage a<lb />balanced and healthy lifestyle for the<lb />community of ECU.<lb /><lb />oECU has gotten a bad reputa-<lb />tion for its populations of students<lb />that have STDS and AIDS. By offer-<lb />ing free tests, it shows that they are<lb />trying to switch the reputation and<lb />that they really care about the health<lb />and safety of everyone that attends<lb />ECU,T said freshmen Megan Roome.<lb /><lb />The center is operated by the<lb />Campus Wellness Education Leaders.<lb />This is a group of students who are<lb />trained to give accurate health infor-<lb />mation to students, faculty and staff.<lb /><lb />For more information about<lb />Wellness Wednesdays, visit the<lb />Campus Wellness Web site at<lb />ecu.edu/cs-studentlife/crw/pro-<lb />grams/campuswellness, or stop<lb />by the office on the second floor<lb />of the Student Recreation Center.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />news@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />First Engineering and Technology Day held at ECU<lb /><lb />nec<lb /><lb />&<lb /><lb />A contestantTs bridge is tested for strength and durability during Engineering and Technology Day.<lb /><lb />Egg toss and bridge<lb />competition for local<lb />schools<lb /><lb />GENERRA CORNWELL<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />The Engineering and Technol-<lb />ogy department came together to<lb />inform high school students about<lb />the engineering and technology<lb />programs at ECU with the first<lb />Engineering and Technology Day<lb />held Feb. 23. Next came the student<lb />competitions, which consisted of<lb /><lb />the egg toss and the bridge contest.<lb />Finally, they gave away free t-shirts<lb />and went to Todd Dining Hall to<lb />have a free meal ECU style.<lb /><lb />oFor the egg toss [competi-<lb />tion] they had to drop the egg onto<lb />a target about 30 feet above. The<lb />egg had to hit the center of a target.<lb />Some eggs survived and some<lb />didnTt. The students really enjoyed<lb />it. They were cheering and getting<lb />really excited about our program,?<lb />said Gerald Micklow, systems engi-<lb />neering director.<lb /><lb />oFor the bridge building com-<lb />petition the students had to build<lb />a bridge made of only Popsicle<lb />sticks and glue. <lb />"<lb /><lb />Ion<lb /><lb />TUESDAY FEBRUARY 27,2007 Page A3<lb /><lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />Where is Urinetown? | believe itTs<lb />in my dorm room. °<lb /><lb />{ Please recycle me! }<lb /><lb />Killing the<lb />homeless<lb />for sport<lb /><lb />Why kick someone when he or sheTs<lb />already down?<lb /><lb />JESSICA DUNLOW<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Almost everyone has had an encounter with a<lb />homeless person. I have been walking back from the<lb />parking lot and a ragged, beaten-down-by-life man<lb />asks me if I have any change to spare. I admit it, I<lb />always assume they are going to spend the little bit<lb />of money I might give them on alcohol or drugs, so<lb />I consistently refuse and attempt to walk faster to<lb />avoid another confrontation.<lb /><lb />Get this"in the United States, the homeless<lb />are being attacked by college-aged people. Accord-<lb />ing to the National Coalition for the Homeless, it<lb />has logged 122 brutal beatings and 20 murders of<lb />homeless in 2006. All right, it does not seem like a<lb />lot, but the stories are wretched. Some include sur-<lb />prising a homeless man sleeping on a bench in a park<lb />and maiming the victim beyond recognition. These<lb />perpetrators are facing life in prison.<lb /><lb />Yeah, we all suffer from the mentality that all<lb />homeless people are drunks or former drug addicts<lb />that are too lazy to get jobs. Granted, that is what<lb />our culture teaches us, however, it is still not an<lb />excuse to think that our lives are more important<lb />than theirs are. Regardless of the fact that they are<lb />homeless, they are still people and the Constitution<lb />protects them.<lb /><lb />You should notT kick someone who is already<lb />down. This takes it to a completely new level.<lb />What on Earth could be gratifying about beating<lb />up someone who has no possessions other than the<lb />clothes on their backs or the random stuff they have<lb />in a shopping cart? They are people, too. People<lb />deserve.to live. Pro-lifers argue that a baby has the<lb />right to live upon conception, and so do the souls<lb />that life forgot.<lb /><lb />' OK, the phrase othat life forgot? is somewhat<lb />dramatic, but in reality, we cannot assume that the<lb />homeless are lazy, no-good bums that have no moti-<lb />vation or intelligence to raise themselves above their<lb />current economic status. College kids are beating up<lb />and murdering homeless people. It is beneath what-<lb />ever morals we are supposed to be raised with here<lb />in America, since we were founded on the principles<lb />of justice and equality.<lb /><lb />So way to go, kids withTno heart, and thank you<lb />for showing the world howmuch we truly care about<lb />our citizens... that if they have no home, they are<lb />worthless. To the people that beat up and kill these<lb />homeless, you deserve to serve your sentence in jail,<lb />and maybe you should have been the one living on<lb />the streets. Then you would understand.<lb /><lb />Al Gore: |<lb />President of<lb />Hollywood<lb /><lb />Do we have a new candidate for<lb />2008?<lb /><lb />KRYSTLE STRICKLIN<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />If Hollywood was its own nation, we certainly<lb />know who the president would be. Sorry Arnold, but<lb />it looks like Al Gore has swept the showbiz com-<lb />munity off its feet.<lb /><lb />This past Sunday they welcomed him in with a<lb />standing ovation, crowned him king and presented<lb />him with a golden scepter"an Oscar. His inter-<lb />national blockbuster film, An Inconvenient Truth,<lb />won for best documentary film and as he took the<lb />stage, the stars rose to their feet to congratulate<lb />their king.<lb /><lb />So, has our former Vice President abandoned<lb />politics for a place in the spotlights of Hollywood?<lb />Maybe he just got tired of being ignored. Appar-<lb />ently, Al Gore has spent the better part of his career<lb />fighting for environmental causes, but not many<lb /><lb />people knew this. Then, in one year, with one film, 3<lb /><lb />he turns the global warming crisis into a worldwide<lb />phenomenon.<lb /><lb />I guess he realized that he could reach more<lb />people through Hollywood than he could through<lb />Washington. As a politician, he mostly represents<lb />the great voting debacle of 2000, but as an actor,<lb />he has become the face of the campaign to reduce<lb />global warming.<lb /><lb />He was also recently named one of many nomi-<lb />nees for the Nobel Peace Prize, for his work on the<lb />environment. Many people think that he has a excel-<lb />lent chance at winning because of the huge impact<lb />his film has had on the global community.<lb /><lb />Just to recap, since his presidential loss in 2000,<lb />Gore has won an Oscar, been nominated for a Nobel<lb />Peace Prize and now has half of Hollywood begging<lb />him to run for president. How do you say no when<lb />celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio and Cameron<lb />Diaz ask you to run?<lb /><lb />While he has repeatedly proclaimed that he has<lb />no interest in entering the 2008 presidential race,<lb />some people are just not taking ono? for an answer.<lb />Numerous Web sites, like draftgore.com, have been<lb />created to try to draft Gore into the race.<lb /><lb />Perhaps even the Democrats will get behind<lb /><lb />Gore if they think he has a better chance to win than '<lb /><lb />their current nominees do. Maybe Hilary and Obama<lb />should start hugging some trees.<lb /><lb />One thing is for sure, Al Gore was definitely the<lb />biggest winner Sunday night. Not to mention he<lb />always invites her to things that our group of friends<lb />does, and nobody with us can stand her. Anyway,<lb />heTs a good looking guy and he is really good to<lb />the women that go out with him, so how can I get<lb />him to drop [her] and find a girl thatTs worthy?<lb /><lb />Signed,<lb /><lb />A Concerned Friend ©<lb /><lb />Dear Concerned,<lb /><lb />Well, the fact that neither you nor your mutual<lb />friends can stand this girl says quite a lot about the<lb />situation right away. She may not be good for him,<lb />but thatTs really only somewhat relevant to what ITm<lb /><lb />' able to suggest.<lb /><lb />that a great number of people (of both genders, mind<lb /><lb />you) are not the best boy/girlfriend material in the »<lb /><lb />world and it takes a lot of heartbreak to figure that out.<lb /><lb />I also find it hard to believe, though, that your<lb />friend has no idea how any of you feel. Does he hon-<lb />estly not know that you guys all hate this girl? Since<lb />you leave mid-sentence because sheTs around, he must<lb />have at least some idea. You should tell him how you<lb />all feel about her and why, but I donTt suggest you say<lb />things like, oYeah, she flirts with so-and-so all the<lb />time when you aren't around,? because you canTt back<lb />that up. Only mention what you can substantiate.<lb /><lb />Furthermore, everyone needs to realize that<lb />if he just doesnTt want to leave her for what-<lb />ever reason, you all have to come to a happy<lb />medium. I suggest that you initiate ofriends-only?<lb />outings, but on the same hand, no one elseTs<lb />significant others should come, either. Be fair.<lb /><lb />Even if it means getting burned, he'll have to deal<lb />with this himself. Be honest and fair, but donTt shatter<lb />his feelings because you donTt like her. YouTll compro-<lb />mise your relationship with him, and then she wins.<lb />If sheTs as bad as you say she is, that wouldnTt be cool.<lb /><lb />Good luck,<lb />Jane<lb /><lb />John Edwards,<lb />champion of<lb />the poor...<lb /><lb />Pruaine:<lb /><lb />JASON PATTY<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />With the Presidential elections still 21 months<lb />away, it is apparently not too early for contenders to<lb />begin throwing their hats into the ring. Politicians<lb />across the spectrum have already begun to neglect<lb />their duties as governors and ocongresspersons? (how<lb />absurd) in order to tell us how much they can do for<lb />our country.<lb /><lb />The nearest, but certainly not dearest to us is<lb />former North Carolina Democratic Senator John<lb />Edwards. He constantly reminds us of the class divi-<lb />sion in North Carolina and the United States as a<lb />whole, yet with an estimated net worth of 60 million<lb />dollars, he seems to be part of the problem. Accord-<lb />ing to Wikipedia.com, Edwards took advantage of a<lb />tax-law loophole, paying himself through subchapter<lb />S corporate dividends, rather than a salary. This<lb />helped him avoid paying $591,000 in Medicare taxes.<lb />This is awfully hypocritical considering that one of<lb />EdwardsT main campaign fronts is a universal health<lb />care system. Apparently, everyone in America should<lb />have health care paid for by everyone but him.<lb /><lb />John EdwardsT money came from personal injury<lb />mass tort litigation. He sued a pool drain cover<lb />manufacturer because someone didnTt install their<lb />product carefully and nobody watched the children<lb />taking apart the drain in the pool. His lawsuits<lb />against the medical community have done nothing<lb />but raise malpractice insurance and increase the cost<lb />of health care for Americans. No wonder millions of<lb />Americans cannot afford decent health care; lawyers<lb />like him chase ambulances just trying to swindle<lb />another dollar.<lb /><lb />T His support for the President and for the war in<lb />Iraq has been terrible. He is strongly in favor of cut-<lb />ting off funding to our military for operations in Iraq.<lb />I know liberals everywhere will jump at the chance<lb />for our country to give up in the Middle East, but<lb />cutting our troops off from needed supplies is not<lb />the way to do it.<lb /><lb />EdwardsT new house in Orange County sits on<lb />102 acres, just west of Chapel Hill. It is 28,200 square<lb />feet of overindulgence. After completion, its tax value<lb />is estimated to be around six million dollars. This<lb />will make it the second most expensive private resi-<lb />dence in North Carolina, behind the Biltmore Estate.<lb />Champion of the poor... I think not.<lb /><lb />John Edwards wants to help the poor in this<lb />country with health insurance; maybe he should do<lb />his part with his taxes. If he wants to be known as a<lb />champion of the poor, maybe he should stop being a<lb />part of the elitist upper class. Ifhe wants to redistrib-<lb />ute my hard earnings (sounds a lot like communism<lb />to me) by taxing my hard earned paycheck more and<lb />more, maybe he should start with the redistribution of<lb />some of his shadily obtained wealth. I bet the home-<lb />less folks in Chapel Hill would love to come spend<lb />the night at his new estate.<lb /><lb />HAN<lb /><lb />ij<lb />a<lb /><lb />oIwas using my iPod and iPhone around<lb />some poor people today, when | was<lb />suddenly stricken with iGuilt.?<lb /><lb />Sarah Bell<lb />Editor in Chief<lb /><lb />Jenelle Conner Rachel King<lb /><lb />Opinion Editor<lb /><lb />Greg Katski Ronnie Woodward<lb />Sports Editor Asst. SafeRide vans are<lb /><lb />deployed every day of the week,<lb /><lb />Contributed image<lb /><lb />from 7 " 10 p.m. on Mondays<lb />through Wednesdays. They then<lb />service Thursdays through Sat-<lb />urdays from 9 p.m. " 3 a.m. and<lb />Sundays from 9 p.m. " 1 a.m.<lb /><lb />The drivers of the SafeRide<lb />vans are paid students, who must<lb />apply for the position like any job.<lb />They are each trained in dispatch-<lb />ing and answering calls, as well<lb />as driving. There are two vans,<lb />one supporting twelve people;<lb />the other vehicle has capacity for<lb />fifteen. The drivers will bring<lb />students just about anywhere in<lb />Greenville, within reason.<lb /><lb />Views are mixed on the service<lb />SafeRide provides, as it seems to<lb />come down to a love-hate relation-<lb />ship, either enjoying their SafeRide<lb />experience or cursing it. -<lb /><lb />Sara Parham, sophomore ele-<lb /><lb />Photo by Deatrice Lockhart<lb /><lb />SafeRide provides transportation to students in a secure, effective manner. If you're in an<lb />uncomfortable spot off campus,<lb />you might have to be there a lot<lb />longer than you'd hope to be,? said<lb />Parham.<lb /><lb />Another view of the SafeRide<lb />system students reported was<lb />that gender and group size have<lb />occasionally played a large role<lb />when contacting SafeRide. Sev-<lb />eral believe females have a higher<lb />chance for faster response times<lb />over males. Others note the obvi-<lb />ous priority of smaller groups over<lb />larger mixed gender groups.<lb /><lb />oITve used SafeRide twice so<lb />far. They always asked who I was<lb />with and they always check our<lb />OneCards,? said Marley Poston,<lb />freshman hospitality major.<lb /><lb />oThey took forever when I was<lb />with a group of guys the first time<lb />I called. They arrived much faster<lb />[that occasion].?<lb /><lb />Sitting down with Campus<lb />Safety's Annette Parker and Ser-<lb />geant A. M. The documentation<lb />helps create an outline to measure<lb />the traffic from night to night, and<lb />keep records in case of any inci-<lb />dents SafeRide may experience.<lb /><lb />The incoming calls for<lb />SafeRide are answered on a first<lb />come, first served basis and the<lb />closest van to the callerTs location<lb />is directed to pick the students up.<lb />The callers are given an estimated<lb />wait time, but waiting occurs on<lb />both ends, as sometimes the Saf-<lb />eRide vans are forced to wait on<lb />the students not arriving to their<lb />pick up point.<lb /><lb />oThe only way a van goes out<lb />of service is if there is vomit in the<lb />vehicle... our drivers are going<lb />constantly, with sometimes back<lb /><lb />to back calls. ItTs not like they can<lb />take personal breaks,? said Perry.<lb />oAs long as we have gas in the tank<lb />and tires on those vans, they'll be<lb />out there to transport you. Hose picked up the win<lb />after allowing only one run on<lb />four hits in 6 1/3 innings pitched.<lb />Hose also struck out seven bat-<lb />ters in the game.<lb /><lb />oThat was a big win for me<lb />and for the team,? said Hose. oI<lb />was just trying to go out there<lb />and have command of all three<lb />of my pitches and I think I did a<lb />pretty good job of doing that.?<lb /><lb />Godwin said that Friday's win<lb />over St. JohnTs, who had a record<lb />of 40-19 last season, was the most<lb />complete game the Pirates had<lb />played up to that point. Godwin<lb />pointed to the pitching depth<lb />as the reason for the complete<lb />victory.<lb /><lb />oIt was just an outstanding<lb />effort on our playerTs behalf and<lb />a great win for us,? Godwin<lb />said after SaturdayTs win. oDale<lb />Mollenhauer was awesome out<lb /><lb />there tonight and T.J. and the<lb />whole pitching staff did a great<lb />job. For him [Hose] to come out<lb />and throw like this and get a win<lb />under his belt is certainly good<lb />for his confidence and good for<lb />the Pirates.?<lb /><lb />ECU will look to carry its<lb />confidence into next weekendTs<lb />annual Keith LeClair Classic.<lb />Pepperdine, N.C. State and West-<lb />ern Carolina will be in Greenville<lb />for the round-robin event. ECUTs<lb />schedule is highlighted by games<lb />with 17th ranked Pepperdine on<lb />Friday and a 3 p.m. Saturday<lb />showdown with itsbiggest rival,<lb />N.C. State.<lb /><lb />oIf you look at our schedule,<lb />every weekend we play is tough,?<lb />Godwin said. oWe'll have three<lb />good days of preparation: this<lb />week and we have another tour-<lb />nament here this weekend with<lb />three outstanding opponents.?<lb /><lb />This writér can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />WEEKLY SOFTBALL AWARD<lb /><lb />Schieber played a_ pivotal<lb /><lb />part in the Pirates three wins<lb />this past weekend. On Saturday,<lb />Schieber led off the eighth inning<lb />with a pinch-hit single that<lb />sparked ECUTs 6-3 comeback<lb />victory over Washington. The<lb />Pirates utility infielder then went<lb />3-for-4 on Sunday, scoring two<lb />runs and stealing three bases.<lb />Overall, Schieber went 5-for-8 on<lb />the weekend, scoring three runs<lb />and stealing four bases. Schieber<lb />now leads the Pirates in batting<lb />average (.375), stolen bases (4),<lb />slugging percentage (.688) and is<lb />third in on-base percentage (.412)<lb /><lb />oWhat a great job by Drew<lb />Schieber coming off the bench<lb />right there. | think he really ignited<lb />that inning and got something<lb />going for us.?
