StanfordTs<lb />$911 million was-the most ever<lb />collected by a single university, and<lb />raised the staggering possibility of<lb />a billion-dollar fundraising year in<lb />the not-too-distant future.<lb /><lb />oThere were a set of ideas and a<lb />set of initiatives that the university<lb />is undertaking that people wanted<lb />to invest in,? said Martin Shell,<lb />StanfordTs vice president for devel-<lb />opment. oThis is an unbelievably<lb />generous response from an unbe-<lb />lievably philanthropic set of alumni,<lb />parents and friends.?<lb /><lb />Nationally, donations from<lb />alumni rose 18.3 percent from 2005,<lb />according to new figures being<lb />released Wednesday by the Council<lb />for Aid to Education. Alumni dona-<lb />tions account for about 30 percent of<lb />giving to higher education. Giving<lb />from other groups, such as corpora-<lb />tions and foundations, increased by<lb />much smaller amounts.<lb /><lb />Survey director Ann Kaplan<lb />said the strong economy played<lb />a role, but universities also were<lb />asking more aggressively as part of<lb />formal] fundraising campaigns.<lb /><lb />Colleges oare making a good<lb />case for support,? Kaplan said.<lb />oThe level at which they can receive<lb />contributions will have something<lb />to do with the economy, but they<lb />have to be out there asking for it.?<lb /><lb />Stanford had about 300 full-<lb />time fundraising employees asking<lb />for money in 2006, finishing up<lb />one formal campaign early in the<lb />year and starting another. It was a<lb />demonstration of how fundraising<lb />campaigns, like political ones, now<lb />run virtually full-time.<lb /><lb />Still, the timing did give Stan-<lb />fordTs annual numbers an artificial<lb />boost, because more money tends<lb />to be collected at the beginning and<lb />end of such campaigns.<lb /><lb />The CAE survey contains good<lb />news for a number of schools with<lb />small endowments that saw large<lb />percentage jumps, such as Wagner<lb />College in New York and the<lb />University of La Verne in Califor-<lb />nia"both of which raised about<lb /><lb />$10 million and more than doubled °<lb /><lb />2005Ts collections.<lb />But in absolute dollars, the<lb />wealthiest institutions still domi-<lb /><lb />" nate"and are expanding their lead.<lb /><lb />Last year, the top 10 fundraising<lb />universities collected 16.3 percent<lb />of all gifts, or $7.2 billion, compared<lb />to 14.7 percent in 2005. The top<lb />20 institutions accounted for more<lb />than a quarter of all fundraising.<lb />Stanford was followed by<lb />Harvard, which raised $595 mil-<lb />lion, then Yale ($433 million)<lb />and the University of Pennsyl-<lb />vania ($409 million). All of the<lb />biggest fundraising schools are<lb />large research institutions with<lb />medical schools that typically<lb />attract private support for research<lb />from well beyond their alumni base.<lb />Rounding out the top 10<lb /><lb />see GIVING page A2<lb /><lb />=<lb />S<lb />Ss<lb />yn<lb />LF<lb />is}<lb />=<lb />a<lb /><lb />that will be available for rental.<lb /><lb />oUnder this program, the only<lb />classes that will be affected are<lb />introductory courses,? Parton said.<lb /><lb />Students seem to approve of the<lb />rental system and think it would<lb />greatly affect the amount they have<lb />to spend in textbooks.<lb /><lb />oI spend about $300 each semes-<lb />ter on textbooks. I think this would<lb />be better because I would save a<lb />lot of money,? said Travis Morgan,<lb />freshman marketing major.<lb />, oIn the past, I purchased books<lb />that [didnTt really use and I lost<lb /><lb />«money because:they wouldn't take<lb /><lb />it back during book buyback,?<lb />Morgan said.<lb /><lb />Parton said that a par-<lb />tial textbook rental system<lb />would help the cost of text-<lb />books because students would<lb />have access to more used books.<lb /><lb />Establishing an on-time text-<lb />book reservation or adoption<lb />policy is something that can help<lb />the cost of textbooks now.<lb /><lb />oThis could be implemented<lb />immediately, and will not only<lb />affect thange in the future but<lb />affect change now,? Pantiel said.<lb /><lb />oThe best way to decrease<lb />the cost of textbooks is to get the<lb />adoptions in on time,? Parton said.<lb /><lb />UNCASG is coming up<lb />with ways to encourage fac-<lb />ulty to get their adoption<lb /><lb />orders in on time by establish-<lb />ing incentives and consequences.<lb /><lb />oWe are going to go with the<lb />last decision they made on books<lb />if they donTt get their adoptions in<lb />on time,? Patron said.<lb /><lb />One of ways that ECU has<lb />encouraged faculty to turn in their<lb />orders on time is by giving out<lb />departmental scholarships, accord-<lb />ing to Parton.<lb /><lb />The idea for the textbook<lb />rental proposal was based on<lb />nationwide issues with the cost of<lb />textbooks and education and con-<lb />cerns expressed by SGA members<lb />at ECU.<lb /><lb />oThe delegates for ECU were<lb />the ones that gave us the feedback<lb />that we needed to create this<lb />system,? Pantiel said.<lb /><lb />Pantiel said the increase in the<lb />cost of education isnTt just a prob-<lb />lem in North Carolina.<lb /><lb />oThis is a nationwide issue with<lb />the increasé in the cost of higher<lb />education,? According to the<lb />study, students who had difficulty<lb />being on-task had an increase in on-<lb />task behavior by 20 percent after 10<lb />minutes of physical activity.<lb /><lb />Mahar is concerned about the<lb />lack of importance placed on physical<lb />activity in public schools and hopes<lb />Energizers will combine movement<lb />with learning.<lb /><lb />oItTs important because even if<lb />you can demonstrate its benefit in<lb />terms of health, people are more<lb />likely to do it ifit can help academic<lb />performance of-students,? <lb />THURSDAY FEBRUARY 22, 2007<lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />| picked up my cap and gown yesterday.<lb />OK, | am officially freaked out now.<lb /><lb />pace A3<lb /><lb />ani<lb /><lb />{Love it or leave it}<lb /><lb />U.S. needs<lb /><lb />to proceed<lb />with caution<lb /><lb />Remaining watchful of North Korea<lb />is the key<lb /><lb />KRYSTLE STRICKLIN<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Last week, a breakthrough nuclear agreement<lb />was made between the United States, North Korea<lb />and several other parties. According to CNN, this<lb />agreement entitles North Korea to receive 50,000<lb />tons of oil, and in exchange, North Korea will shut<lb /><lb />down their main nuclear reactor and allow inspectors 8<lb /><lb />to enter their facilities within 60 days.<lb /><lb />This agreement comes only four months after<lb />North Korea defied international laws and began<lb />conducting nuclear tests.<lb /><lb />This deal is being hailed as, oA good first step,?<lb />but questions remain as to how effective the deal<lb />will play out to be.<lb /><lb />North Korea has a notorious reputation for back-<lb />pedaling out of agreements and before last week, had<lb />shown no signs whatsoever that they would agree to<lb />any form of compromise. The only reliable aspect of<lb />this deal is the fact that it buys all parties involved<lb />some more time.<lb /><lb />I am not sure that time will change much with<lb />this situation, but it will give North Korea a chance<lb />to show some cooperation. Those who remain opti-<lb />mistic about the deal believe that reaching these<lb />limited agreements will lead us to better goals in<lb />the future.<lb /><lb />Those who oppose it think that we are simply<lb />rewarding North Korea for their obad behavior.?<lb />Either way, I think it is important to remain on the<lb />defense toward North Korea and be cautious about<lb />trusting them.<lb /><lb />It seems a little unlikely that Kim Jong-II, aman<lb />who has been systematically starving his people for<lb />years, would abandon his entire nuclear program, for<lb />some oil and renewed aid to his starving nation.<lb /><lb />Especially since developing nuclear power is his<lb />strongest platform for building false national pride<lb />within his nation.<lb /><lb />He has spent the last decade convincing his coun-<lb />try to be fearful of an American attack, thus creating<lb />national support for his nuclear arms program. Will<lb />he now go to his people and tell them an agreement<lb />was made with the United States, and he is giving<lb />up their entire defense?<lb /><lb />All I can say is that it is extremely doubtful. His<lb />pride has become far too large for him to swallow<lb />this easily.<lb /><lb />Letter to<lb />the Editor<lb /><lb />Dear Editor,<lb /><lb />. Any political consultant will tell their clients<lb />that young adults do not vote. Therefore, they can<lb />save money by eliminating efforts to target them.<lb />This advice, however, is a misconception. ©<lb /><lb />Young adults do not abstain from voting. They<lb />do care about the public policy that affects them.<lb /><lb />The problem is, in part, because less than two<lb />percent of North Carolina young adults (ages 18<lb />" 24) know about the 25-day deadline for regis-<lb />tration, which causes turnout to be the lowest for<lb />this age group.<lb /><lb />Young adults are disenfranchised by the voting<lb />system. They move more frequently, for school and<lb />jobs, making it harder for them to stay registered.<lb />Young adults (and first time voters) often find<lb />the election process intimidating. Many would<lb />argue that due to lack of targeting by candidates,<lb />youth turnout often lags far behind other voting<lb />demographics. In 2004, only 38 percent of 18 " 24<lb />year-olds in North Carolina voted compared to a 56<lb />percent in states with In-Person Registration.<lb /><lb />ItTs time to follow the lead of other states and<lb />adopt a new system. The North Carolina State<lb />Board of Elections has gone on record saying it now<lb />has the technology to allow voters to register and<lb />vote in person at one-stop absentee voting sites.<lb /><lb />House Bill 91, sponsored by Representatives<lb />Ross, Holliman, Parmon and Tolson will allow for<lb />oIn-Person Registration and Voting at One-Stop<lb />Absentee Voting Sites.? Already, 57 Democrats<lb />have signed onto this bill and we thank them.<lb /><lb />With this legislation, our highly mobile young<lb />adult population can utilize its right to vote more<lb />effectively. House Bill 91 has the power to increase<lb />youth voter turnout in presidential elections by as<lb />much as fourteen percentage points, according to<lb />studies. More importantly, young adults who vote<lb />are more likely to participate in the voting process<lb />for the rest of their lives. :<lb /><lb />North Carolina is moving forward and with the<lb />support of our state legislature, young voters can<lb />help chart the course of our collective future.<lb /><lb />Daniel Spuller<lb />Vice President, Pitt County Young Democrats<lb /><lb />Tony McEwen<lb />Statewide President, Young Democrats of<lb />North Carolina<lb /><lb />Melissa Price.<lb />Chair, Young Democrats of North Carolina<lb />WomenTs Caucus :<lb /><lb />[ON-THE-Jos NAPS MIGHT CuT RISKS FOR HEART PROBLEMS<lb /><lb />HE SAID<lb />HE'S GOING To<lb /><lb />FIRE Me For<lb />SLEEPING AT My<lb />DESK RIGHT AFTER<lb />HE TAKES U5<lb /><lb />Me 5 KAue f+<lb />Cress<lb /><lb />The Fast Carolinian does not endorse statements made in Pirate Rants. There was a panel consisting of<lb />professors and students to facilitate a discussion and<lb />answer questions from the audience following the<lb />film. This film is a omockumentary? on the owhat-if?<lb />scenario of the Confederate States of America win-<lb />ning the Civil War. Willmot and Lee's intentions with<lb />this film are unclear to me, as ITm not sure if they are<lb />trying to be funny, bring attention to race relations or<lb />bash southern culture. I know that they succeeded in<lb />making a mockery of any sort of historical accuracy<lb />and needlessly depredating current race relations.<lb /><lb />C.S.A. was obviously made to be a satire. It makes a<lb />few drastic mistakes in its assumptions about life after<lb />the Civil War had the South won. Willmot assumes<lb />that the Confederacy would have invaded the North<lb />and attempted to retain a Union under Southern. con-<lb />trol. This is absurd and is as far from the intentions of<lb />Southern leadership as one could be. The goal of the<lb />Confederate States secession was exactly that, seces-<lb />sion. They wanted to protect their statesT rights and<lb />limit the size and power of the federal government. The<lb />film assumes that slavery would have continued into<lb />modern times as a mainstream social institution. This<lb />obviously ignores the fact that most evidence suggests<lb />that slavery was on the way out as a viable economic<lb />model before the civil war and most certainly would<lb />have died out shortly thereafter. Possibly the worst<lb />assumption made was that the Southern government<lb />would have imposed an income tax on Northerners<lb />not owning slaves. The idea of an income tax was not<lb />instituted as a permanent fixture in the pro-federal<lb />government United States until World War I. Any idea<lb />that the very anti-federal government Confederate States<lb />would have ever imposed such a tax is ridiculous. The<lb />rest of this movie follows these assumptions and gets<lb />even more unfounded and outrageous as it progresses.<lb /><lb />C.S.A. uses iconic. imagery and historical events<lb />with strong emotional connotations to stir up nega-<lb />tive reactions that are then associated inaccurately<lb />with the Confederacy. It does nothing but strengthen<lb />the trenches on either side of racial conflict. There is<lb />no reason to turn the Home Shopping Network into a<lb />televised auctioning block for human beings except to<lb />make everyone who sees it angry. What is the purpose<lb />of a film designed to make people angry? Is it not time<lb />that we embrace the fact that we live in a society without<lb />slavery where everyone is legally equal? I think that<lb />Spike LeeTs money and Kevin WilmotTs time would have<lb />been much better spent on promoting a positive aspect<lb />of todayTs society. Instead, they insist on assuming our<lb />country could have been built on racism and that had<lb />the North not won the war, black people would never<lb />have accomplished the many things that they have.<lb />That seems like a needlessly negative point of view.<lb /><lb />Very little discussion following the film was given<lb />to the plausibility of the series of events portrayed.<lb />Most of the dialogue centered around whether or not<lb />the audience and panel members thought that it was<lb />funny and why people were laughing at seemingly<lb />inappropriate times. Dr. Carmine Scavo seemed to<lb />think that without the Northern government, North<lb />Carolina would be a very poor, very uneducated state,<lb />with little or no industry that olooked a lot like Mexico,?<lb />and still would have an agricultural economy based on<lb />chattel slavery. Black Student Union President Patrick<lb />Dixon seemed to think that many owhite Americans<lb />feel that they are superior to African Americans and<lb />other races.? I think that these gentlemen could not<lb />be further from the truth. It is attitudes such as these<lb />that keep tightening the screws of racial tension and<lb />promoting the idea that nothing will ever change. It .<lb />is a owoe is me? kind of attitude. I have a lot more faith<lb />in the people of this state to accomplish what we have,<lb />regardless of the outcome of a Civil War. I understand<lb />that racial relations cannot improve with one side propa-<lb />gating the very ideas that they claim to fight against.<lb /><lb />This film serves to create resentment for a very<lb />fictional set of events. With a few notable exceptions,<lb />the panel members seemed to buy into this idea. It<lb />is offensive to the southern society that most of us<lb />live in, to think that we would still be stuck in the<lb />19th century without being shoved into the modern<lb />era by the Union. Slavery was abolished and equal<lb />rights have been established. We must understand<lb />that this is factual history. Understanding our past<lb />can certainly prevent us from repeating our mistakes,<lb />but fictionalizing history to stir present day emotions<lb />negatively does not serve society in any positive way.<lb /><lb />Sarah Bell<lb />= Editor in Chief<lb /><lb />Jenelle Conner Rachel King<lb />News Editor Opinion Editor<lb />Greg Katski Ronnie Woodward<lb />Sports Editor Asst. A hilarious<lb />tale of greed, corruption, love and<lb />revolution, this play tells the story<lb />of people banding together to over-<lb />come adversity and still manages to<lb />make fun of everything from local<lb />government, bureaucracy, corpo-<lb />rate mismanagement, to small town<lb />politics and musicals themselves.<lb /><lb />oT have heard a lot of good<lb />things about the show from some of<lb />the people working on the produc-<lb />tion,? said Kerri Braswell, a senior<lb />from the College of Fine Arts and<lb />Communication. oI am looking<lb />forward to seeing if itTs as amazing<lb />as it is said to be.?<lb /><lb />Set in a large futuristic city after<lb />a 20-year draught, Urinetown has<lb />been struck with a terrible water<lb /><lb />shortage, leading to a government- ;<lb /><lb />enforced ban on private toilets.<lb />Citizens of the town must use public<lb />amenities, regulated by a single<lb />company that profits by charging<lb />admission for one of humanityTs<lb />most basic needs. From<lb /><lb />dietary changes to daily medita-<lb />tions, ITm doing it all. And frankly,<lb />this just might prove to be the<lb />death of me.<lb /><lb />I signed up for this project<lb />because, on paper, it looked easy<lb />enough. ThatTs not to say I thought<lb />it would be acakewalk, but I figured<lb />I could manage everything with no<lb />problem. LetTs just say, I was wrong.<lb /><lb />Cutting so many things out<lb />of my diet has proven much more<lb />difficult that I ever could have<lb />expected. We live in a country<lb />where even all-natural apple juice<lb />has artificial flavorings and addi-<lb />tives, which of course are unac-<lb />ceptable in the project.<lb /><lb />I see someone drinking a sweet<lb />tea from Bojangles and I seriously<lb />salivate. I long for ice cream and<lb />so many other snacks that we care-<lb />lessly consume on a daily basis. In<lb />response to all that I canTt have,<lb />itTs become a fruit and veggie regi-<lb />men for me. ITm bored with what<lb />I am eating, and to prepare and<lb />eat anything else seems like such<lb />a chore, so most nights ITm going<lb />to bed before 10 p.m. because my<lb />body doesnTt have the energy to do<lb />anything else.<lb /><lb />This modified diet is proving<lb />interesting in another way as well<lb />"my dreams are more vivid than<lb />ever before. I donTt know if it has<lb />something to do with the cleans-<lb />ing of my system or what, but they<lb />have been so intense lately.<lb /><lb />Dreams aside, itTs becoming<lb />increasingly bothersome to me<lb />that my friends all look at this<lb />project as some sort of joke. They:<lb />all seem to think that this is a<lb />Joyride for me, for when in real-<lb />ity, itTs a challenge. I guess I canTt<lb />complain too much though, since<lb />they're being supportive in their<lb />own ways"telling me that they<lb />won't talk to,me on the phone all<lb />month and trying not to tempt me<lb />with out things ITm not allowed to<lb />do or have.<lb /><lb />In taking away my cell phone<lb />and computer, I have become<lb />uncomfortably comfortable with<lb />boredom. That is to say, ITm start-<lb />ing to get used to living without<lb />the two.and I donTt like it whatso-<lb />ever. ITm a child of convenience and<lb />modern living, so why should I be<lb />comfortable without the material<lb />possessions that I love so dearly<lb />and have come to depend upon on<lb />a daily basis. Surprisingly enough,<lb />itTs starting to happen.<lb /><lb />ThatTs not to say that after<lb />this project ITll give my phone or<lb />computer altogether because ITm<lb />growing used to not having them<lb />at my beckon call, but it just goes<lb />to show that maybe theyTre not<lb />quite as important as we all think<lb />they are.<lb /><lb />Tonight ITm going to experi-<lb />ence meditation and chanting in<lb />a group setting"something ITve<lb />obviously never done before. ITm<lb />already mediating everyday on<lb />my own, so who knows how this<lb />is going to play out. While medi-<lb />tating on my own, I seem to lose<lb />myself. ITm not sure ifitTs bringing<lb />me clarity or making me feel more<lb />lost. This whole project seems to<lb />be playing mind games with me<lb />and I guess it won't be until the<lb />end that I'll be able to see a clearer<lb />picture of everything thatTs ae<lb />pening to me now.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />pulse@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Gifted musicians perform timeless pieces<lb /><lb />A taste of the classics<lb /><lb />LIZ FULTON<lb />SENIOR WRITER<lb /><lb />The midseason performance<lb />of the Four Seasons Chamber<lb />Music Festival, oA Taste of Clas-<lb />sics? occurs this week in Fletcher<lb />Recital Hall.<lb /><lb />As part of this illustrious festi-<lb />val, oA Taste of Classics? presents<lb />musicians from all over the world<lb />playing choice works from Arutiu-<lb />nian, Beethoven and Schubert.<lb /><lb />Ara Gregorian, founder and<lb />artistic director of the festival, will<lb />play violin/viola in a sextet featur-<lb />ing Grammy nominated pianist<lb />Adam Neiman, principal bass of the<lb />NC Symphony Orchestra, Leonid<lb />Finkelshteyn and violinist Elina<lb /><lb />Vahala, first prizewinner of Young<lb />Concert Artists International.<lb /><lb />oThese same musicians<lb />are performing in the worldTs<lb />finest halls with the worldTs finest<lb />orchestras and ensembles,? said<lb />Gregorian. oWhen the festival<lb />brings these artists to the region,<lb />it is truly a chance to experience<lb />world-class music without traveling<lb />to a major city.?<lb /><lb />The concert begins with Alex-<lb />ander ArutiunianTs Suite for Clari-<lb />net, Violin and Piano. So, let me<lb />begin with explaining why ITm<lb />saying no to the other films.<lb />Little Miss Sunshine is not only the<lb />movie that could, but has. Coming<lb />out of last yearTs Sundance, the<lb />film has surprised everyone with<lb />its success. However, it shouldn't,<lb />as it has an ensemble of all-stars.<lb />However, it lacks in other areas<lb />that take it out of the running. Even in<lb />light of this news, Falcon was<lb />just glad to be back in action after<lb />having to sit out about a month and<lb />missing some of the biggest games<lb />in program history.<lb /><lb />oIt feels good,? said Falcon.<lb />oObviously I only played half a<lb />game this weekend but it feels<lb />really good to get back on the ice<lb />and get a feel for game speed. It<lb />really feels great and it was good<lb />to get some momentum going into<lb />this weekend and getting some<lb />confidence back.?<lb /><lb />The win on Friday also gave<lb />the Pirates the regular season<lb />championship in the BRHC.<lb /><lb />oCertainly we sent a mes-<lb />sage in winning the Blue Ridge<lb />championship and it is a huge<lb />accomplishment for these kids,?<lb />Cox said. oWe're so proud of them<lb />as a coaching staff; they brought it<lb />to the table every night and gave<lb />us their heart and soul.?<lb /><lb />Cox decided that with the No.<lb />1 seed in this weekTs conference<lb />championship tournament and a<lb />regular season title locked up that<lb />third string goalie Scott Duffee<lb />should start Saturday. Playing<lb />oDuff?, as most players call him,<lb />proved to be too much for the<lb />Highlanders. Duffee took a shutout<lb />into the final three minutes on the<lb />third period before finally surren-<lb />dering two goals. Duffee tallied 19<lb />saves on 21 shots for the day.<lb /><lb />Tyler Falcon added a hat trick<lb />on Saturday to give the Pirates<lb />a total of three players with hat<lb />tricks in the two game series.<lb />Other goals were added by Corey<lb />Fleitz, Mitchell Sears, Jeremy<lb />Lang, Mark Linzer, Pat Szwec,<lb /><lb />Seth Percy, and Erik Brown.<lb /><lb />Brearley was glad to see Duffee<lb />play-on Saturday and thought the<lb />team showed a lot of strength as well.<lb /><lb />oT think we showed a lot of<lb />depth this weekend,? said Brearley.<lb />oWe played a lot of guys that donTt<lb />always dress and they produced<lb />for us. It was really great to see<lb />Duff get the start on Saturday; he<lb />played really well. I think it was<lb />a good warm up for this weekend<lb />too because we proved that we have<lb />four solid lines that we can work<lb />with, and that will be key against<lb />the teams we're playing.?<lb /><lb />The Pirates return to the ice<lb />for the final time this weekend in<lb />Yorktown, VA to participate in<lb /><lb />the BRHC championship tourna- .<lb /><lb />ment. ECU will play the winner<lb />of Appalachian State and Clemson<lb />on Saturday since it received a bye<lb />as the No. 1 seed. The winner of<lb />that game will face the winner<lb />of Richmond vs. Old Dominion/<lb />Virginia Commonwealth for the<lb />championship:on Sunday.<lb /><lb />Cox doesnTt expect a let down<lb />this weekend.<lb /><lb />oWe have enough veterans<lb />that know how bad it hurts to lose<lb />and also knowing that we took a<lb />loss against Clemson,? said Cox.<lb />oApp wasnTt a walkover so we've<lb />got to stay focused. The whole<lb />key to this weekend is to stay out<lb />of the penalty box and get good<lb />goaltending.?<lb /><lb />oNo, I wouldnTt consider it a<lb />total failure if we lost this week-<lb />end? Cox also stated. oThe goal<lb />is to play up to our potential and<lb />if we do that we should win the<lb />championship.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Straight from<lb /><lb />the top<lb /><lb />Thoughts on a letter<lb />from Terry Holland<lb /><lb />GREG KATSKI<lb />SPORTS EDITOR<lb /><lb />Terry Holland addressed the<lb />Pirate Nation after the worst<lb />loss at Minges Coliseum since<lb />the venue opened in 1967. The<lb />ECU menTs basketball team<lb />has competed admirably for 40<lb />years at Minges, without ever<lb />losing by as lofty a margin as<lb />38 points. This. was, as many<lb />might know, the margin of<lb />defeat for the Pirates against<lb />a young Southern Miss squad.<lb /><lb />The Golden Eagles went up<lb />by as many as 43 points almost<lb />halfway through the second half,<lb />with a 70-27 lead. ECU also had<lb />a Minges record-low 21 rebounds<lb />in the game.?<lb /><lb />For the past 40 years fae<lb />eyen back to the inception of the<lb /><lb />university, the Pirate faithful<lb /><lb />have prided themselves on being<lb />loyal, rowdy fans"the backbone<lb />of ECUTs success at home.<lb /><lb />The Pirates won 66 percent of<lb />their games at the coliseum going<lb />into this season, with a record of<lb />324-168. So far ECU has a lowly<lb />record of 4-9 at home, with three<lb />of the four wins against Division<lb />II opponents.<lb /><lb />ItTs hard to stay faithful with<lb />a team going through grow-<lb />ing pains as excruciating as the<lb />Pirates, but fans and students<lb />have still been flocking to games.<lb />ECUTs home games have been<lb />averaging an attendance of 4,462<lb />people per game this season. This<lb />is only slightly down from last<lb />season when the average was<lb />5,170. :<lb /><lb />In an e-mail sent out to Pirate<lb />Club Members Feb. 16, ECU.<lb />Athletic Director Terry Holland<lb /><lb />addressed the shortcomings of .<lb />this season and seemingly issued _<lb /><lb />arally cry to every Pirates fan. _<lb /><lb />oIt is important to acknowl-<lb />edge the frustration that we all<lb />feel after Wednesday nightTs<lb /><lb />game versus Southern Missis- "<lb /><lb />sippi. There is no acceptable<lb />rationale for such a result,? Hol-<lb />land wrote in the e-mail.<lb /><lb />Holland went on to say, oThe .<lb /><lb />only plausible explanation is that<lb />the combined weight of all the<lb />challenges this Season finally<lb />overwhelmed us.?<lb /><lb />Indeed, this season has been<lb /><lb />T achallenging one for the Pirates,<lb /><lb />and there are many underlying<lb />reasons why.<lb /><lb />The most glaring explanation<lb />is the total dismantling of a team<lb />that former Head Coach Bill Her-<lb />rion built before being olet go?<lb />after the 2004"2005 season.<lb /><lb />Coming into this season, the<lb />Pirates returned only four letter-<lb />men from last year. These four<lb />experienced scholarship players<lb />Joined a group of 10 newcomers,<lb />including seven freshmen.<lb /><lb />Holland called on the inexpe-<lb />rienced team and the university<lb /><lb />in his letter.<lb /><lb />oThere is no doubt that our<lb />young, wounded team members<lb />and the coaching staff must play<lb />the major role in beginning this<lb />process. However, the forces gov-<lb />erning the success or failure for<lb />the team and coaching staff are<lb />not totally within their control,?<lb />said Holland in the statement.<lb /><lb />It is no doubt that the young<lb />players donTt deserve all the<lb /><lb />blame, but the coaching staff<lb />might have something to do with<lb />the teamTs struggles.<lb /><lb />Former starting point guard<lb />Japhet McNeil transferred after<lb />a disappointing 2005"2006,<lb />the first under current Head<lb />Coach Ricky Stokes. McNeil was<lb />a prized recruit of HerrionTs and<lb />transferred ranked second among<lb />ECU career assists leaders (365)<lb />and first in highest assist average<lb />per game (4.51).<lb /><lb />Another prized recruit of<lb />HerrionTs that could have helped<lb />this seasonTs young and inexperi-<lb />enced team was former starting<lb />shooting guard Mike Cook. Cook<lb />decided to leave shortly after<lb />Herrion was olet go? for good<lb />by Terry Holland following the<lb />2004-05 season.<lb /><lb />Cook was personally recruited<lb /><lb />-by Herrion and played high school<lb /><lb />ball at Friends Central High<lb />School in Philadelphia, where<lb />Herrion used to get the majority<lb />of his recruits while coaching<lb />nearby Drexel University.<lb /><lb />After Herrion was olet go?,<lb />Cook decided to transfer to the<lb />University of Pittsburgh, where<lb />he-is now the second leading<lb />scorer (10.3 ppg) on the eighth-<lb />ranked team in the nation. Cook<lb />was also successful at ECU, aver-<lb />aging a team best 15 points per<lb />game his sophomore year.<lb /><lb />Unlike Herrion, who compiled<lb />a 121-32 record as the head coach<lb />at Drexel before coming to ECU,<lb />current Head Coach Stokes did<lb />not have a successful track record<lb />as a head coach before taking over.<lb />Coming into this year Stokes was<lb />54-89 as ahead coach, with a win-<lb />ning percentage of .878. In four<lb />full seasons as the head coach of<lb />Virginia Tech, Stokes was 46-69<lb /><lb />obefore being olet go.? \<lb /><lb />Stokes has been much more<lb /><lb />osuccessful in the osupporting<lb />role? than in the oleading role.?<lb />In 14 full seasons as an assistant<lb /><lb />coach for such storied programs<lb />as Virginia and Texas Stokes is<lb />269-166, with a .618 winning<lb />percentage.<lb /><lb />Stokes has never taken a team<lb />to the NIT or NCAA Tournament<lb />as a head coach, while Herrion |<lb />took the Drexel Dragons to the<lb />obig dance? three seasons in a<lb />row from 1993-1996, garnering<lb />America East Coach of the Year<lb />honors each year.<lb /><lb />In the end though, Holland<lb />makes it clear that we as fans have<lb />a big decision to make.<lb /><lb />oBy stepping forward at<lb />this time, we can send a power- -<lb />ful message that we (you and<lb />I) are not going to accept the<lb />current status of our basket-<lb />ball program,? wrote Holland.<lb /><lb />Holland added, oIf we turn<lb />our backs on this team and staff,<lb />we will be sending an equally<lb />powerful message that basketball<lb />at ECU is simply not important<lb />ehough for us to do something<lb />that is totally within our power<lb />to do"support our Pirates when<lb />they need us the most.?<lb /><lb />So now where do we as fans<lb />go from here, and what about<lb />the state of the program? The<lb />program has seemingly hit rock<lb />bottom, and we as students and<lb />fans must let our voices be heard.<lb />Are you, as students, going to<lb />support your team and your<lb />school? Trevor Smith<lb />picked up the win for Campbell and<lb />Hamme got the save, both getting<lb />their first for the season. ECU was<lb />struck out seven times by Campbell<lb />pitchers and walked three times.<lb /><lb />The only error of the game came<lb />during the top of the fourth, when<lb />ECU shortstop Dale Mollenhauer<lb />over threw first baseman Brandon<lb />Henderson. Mollenhauer made up for<lb />his mistake on the very next play by<lb />turning a 6-4-3 double play to help<lb />Dowdy get out of'a scoreless inning.<lb /><lb />The Pirates had a couple of<lb />chances to even up the score. During<lb />the fifth inning Ryan Tousley had a<lb />one out single up the middle, followed<lb />by walks of David Forbes and Ryan<lb />Wood to load the bases. Harrison<lb />Eldridge stepped into the batterTs<lb />box and was struck out by Trevor<lb />Smith too strand the bases loaded.<lb /><lb />In the sixth inning ECUTs Mol-<lb />lenhauer singled to right field to<lb />start a small rally as he then stole<lb />second base. Next up was Jacob<lb />Dean who was walked putting a<lb />man on first and second. Third<lb />baseman Corey Kemp hit a high<lb />bouncer over CampbellTs third<lb />baseman HammeTs head to load the<lb />bases.
