Cole Jones, SGA presi-<lb />dent, had to review the resolution<lb />to decide if he wanted to pass<lb />or veto it.<lb /><lb />The resolution was also<lb />reviewed by Corey King, vice<lb />chancellor of student experiences,<lb />who then sent it to the appropriate<lb />department areas.<lb /><lb />oIT always forward resolu-<lb />tions to the appropriate areas for<lb />responses, especially the vice chan-<lb />cellor of student life,? said King.<lb /><lb />The resolution was sent to Todd<lb />Johnson, vice chancellor of campus<lb />living and dining, for approval.<lb /><lb />oTodd Johnson received the<lb />resolution on last Tuesday and<lb />fully supported it,? said Darden.<lb /><lb />Photo by Levinia Tyrrell<lb /><lb />The resolution still has to<lb />be passed by a few other areas<lb />before it completely takes<lb />effect on campus.<lb /><lb />oIt has not been officially<lb />approved nor has it gone through<lb />the appropriate approvals at the<lb />ECU administrative level or the<lb />corporate level of Aramark,? said<lb />Johnson. oPolicies and practices<lb />concerning the use of credit cards<lb />must also pass the test of being in<lb />compliance with federal banking<lb />laws asT well as local better busi-<lb />ness practices.?<lb /><lb />Photo identification may soon be mandatory for all credit and debit card purchases made on campus, if S<lb /><lb />oThis resolution should affect<lb />all dining places that are owned by<lb />Aramark,? Darden said.<lb /><lb />Darden suggests that it is<lb />another measure that will provide<lb />safety for students and prevent<lb />crimes such as identity theft.<lb /><lb />oThis is a new public safety<lb />measure that will protect all stu-<lb />dents and everyone else who uses<lb />the dining facilities,? Darden said.<lb /><lb />According to Darden, the only<lb />places previously verifying identi-<lb />fication were the Dowdy Student<lb />Stores and the RegistrarTs Office.<lb /><lb />Guilford College has teach-in<lb /><lb />to discuss campus altercation<lb /><lb />Quaker tradition<lb />utilized in<lb />overcoming incident<lb /><lb />(AP)" Guilford College offi-<lb />cials have again turned to Quaker<lb />tradition in the wake of a campus<lb />fight between football players and<lb />three Palestinian students.<lb /><lb />Guilford College, a school<lb />founded by Quakers in 1888, held<lb />a teach-in Sunday during which<lb />faculty members, former athletes<lb />and retired administrators shared<lb />their views about issues related to<lb />the altercation.<lb /><lb />College officials said the dis-<lb />cussion was an important part of<lb />the Quaker tradition of otruth-<lb />seeking.? 3<lb /><lb />oIt is one of our core testimo-<lb />nies"truth telling,? said Max<lb />Carter, campus ministry coordi-<lb />nator. oWe donTt always live up<lb />to it, but it is kind of ingrained<lb />in our DNA.?<lb /><lb />Six football players face<lb />assault charges after the Pales-<lb />tinian students swore out mag-<lb />istrateTs warrants following the<lb />Jan. 20 fight. Carter said. :<lb /><lb />Rather than talking about<lb />the alleged attack, partici-<lb />pants in the teach-in discussed<lb />xenophobia and stereotyping,<lb />Quaker history and the cul-<lb />ture of sports in college.<lb />More than 100 people, includ-<lb />ing about a dozen students,<lb />attended the gathering at New<lb />Garden Friends Meeting across<lb />from campus.<lb /><lb />Some said a divide between<lb />athletes and the rest of the stu-<lb />dent body exists on many cam-<lb />puses.<lb /><lb />oWhat is unfortunate is that<lb />it has taken an incident of this<lb />nature to get us to sit down and<lb />talk about it,? said Bob Malekoff,<lb />an assistant professor of sport<lb />studies at Guilford.<lb /><lb />GuilfordTs response in the<lb /><lb />The handout also included new<lb />research from the Institutional,<lb />Planning and Research department<lb />that expressed the main reason why<lb />first year students come to ECU is<lb />because of the good academic reputa-<lb />tion and a sense of belonging.<lb /><lb />The data indicated a large per-<lb />centage of students said that gradu-<lb />ating was their most important goal,<lb />their experience at ECU increased<lb />their self confidence, and ECU was<lb />their first choice. :<lb /><lb />The research was based on<lb />responses given from first year stu-<lb />dents and sophomores.<lb /><lb />* Roeder suggested that establish-<lb />ing acreed that expresses the students<lb />drive for academic success will bring<lb />a sense of tradition to the university.<lb /><lb />The proposed creed listed on<lb />the handout states, oIn pursuit of<lb />educational excellence, responsible<lb /><lb />see SGA page A2<lb /><lb />aftermath of the fight has been<lb />different than the approach<lb />other schools may have used,<lb />experts said.<lb /><lb />oYou wouldnTt find very<lb />many other institutions dealing<lb />with a campus problem with this<lb />response,? said Jon Fuller, senior<lb />fellow at the National Associa-<lb />tion of Independent Colleges and<lb />Universities. oThe reason it has<lb />been.so troubling to Guilford is<lb />that it seems so out of character<lb />with the institution.?<lb /><lb />While teach-ins are<lb />common at colleges and uni-<lb />versities, they often focus on<lb />global issues such as Iraq policy,<lb />the environment or poverty,<lb />Fuller said.<lb /><lb />oWhat Guilford is doing<lb />is taking a local issue that is<lb />important to both faculty and<lb />students and they are dealing<lb />with it as an academic issue,?<lb />Fuller said. oThey are trying to<lb />understand it.?<lb /><lb />Carter said there has been a<lb />positive response to GuilfordTs<lb />handling of the incident.<lb /><lb />oIt is kind of a knee-jerk<lb />response of a place like Guilford<lb />"you seek the truth,? he said.<lb /><lb />SGA members listen to proposals regarding the creation of a University Creed at Monday nightTs meeting.<lb /><lb />*y<lb /><lb />oWe've always used this policy<lb />since ITve been here and ITve been<lb />here since 2000,? said Bryan<lb />Tuten, associate director of the<lb />Dowdy Student Stores.<lb /><lb />Tuten said that the stores<lb />policy-is to check for identification<lb />for any purchase amount on credit<lb />card purchases.<lb /><lb />oIf I ring up someone for a 10<lb />cent bubble sheet, and they pull<lb />out a credit card, I ask for I.D.,?<lb />Tuten said.<lb /><lb />Darden said that he believes<lb />that some students will be opposed<lb /><lb />GA's proposed resolution passes.<lb /><lb />to the new policy because it may<lb />slow down lines.<lb /><lb />oThe minute lost by showing<lb />identification is nothing compared<lb />to the time and energy used if<lb />someoneTs identity or credit or<lb />debit cards are lost,? <lb />Opinion<lb /><lb />Abbademands<lb /><lb />respect<lb /><lb />Take a chance on the Scandinavian<lb />super group<lb /><lb />BRIDGET TODD<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />When people make fun of Abba I get very tense.<lb />oHa ha, yeah, boy do they suck,? I laugh nervously:<lb />My eyes dart back and forth like that suspicious dog<lb />from The Simpsons and sometimes I sweat. I feel so<lb />ashamed. Ifall of my hip indie rocker friends in their<lb />retro sneakers knew about my secret life, they would<lb />all probably hate me.<lb /><lb />The truth is, I love Abba. I love everything about<lb />them"their blonde flipped Scandinavian hair, their<lb />little synchronized dances and their hazily subdued<lb /><lb />music videos. And those outfits, those shining white bs<lb />billowing costumes they wear. They look like how 3<lb /><lb />a little kid might imagine angels would be dressed,<lb />if angels were European and were perpetually stuck<lb />in 1976.<lb /><lb />My obsession started when I was a little girl.<lb />When my mother had to work, she would leave me<lb />with Ms. Biddy, a plump middle-aged woman who<lb />had four loves in her life: Virginia Slims, cats, mah-<lb />jong and Abba.<lb /><lb />When her television was oon the fritz,? she would<lb />invite her other middle-aged, plump cat-loving<lb />friends to her tiny apartment, put on some Abba and<lb />clap as I performed dance numbers. Sure it sounds<lb />strange, but some of my best childhood memories<lb />involve wearing an old womanTs church hat and<lb />shaking my nonexistent hips to the speedy bass line<lb />of oWaterloo.?<lb /><lb />I wish I could say my love of Abba is a guilty<lb />pleasure, like flipping through a Us Weekly at the<lb />hair salon or watching a oBoy Meets World? rerun<lb />before falling asleep. It would be so much easier if<lb />it were Just something I casually liked. But it isnTt. I<lb />have every Abba record ever released.<lb /><lb />I have all of the DVDs, including the often for-<lb />gotten Abba: The Movie. A few years ago, my parents<lb />took me to see Mamma Mia, a musical based on Abba<lb />songs and watched in horror as I danced in the aisle.<lb />Even my own parents were ashamed of their little<lb />Abba addict.<lb /><lb />And for a while it seemed like I wasnTt alone.<lb />Mamma Mia was a smash and much to my amuse-<lb />ment, American Idol had Abba Week. Madonna<lb />even gyrated her leotard-laden hips to a sample of<lb />their 1979 oGimmie Gimmie Gimmie? for her 2005<lb />oHung Up.?<lb /><lb />A group of smiley fresh-faced preteens called the<lb />A Teens were even covering Abba songs for the teen<lb />population. It seemed like Abba was finally getting<lb />the respect it deserved. But alas, just watch one of<lb />those Vh1 I Love the Decade shows and it seems<lb />the Abba-mocking is hip again: But I guess it makes<lb />sense. Today, a group as dorkily sincere as Abba can<lb />only be taken seriously for so long, especially when<lb />all of the men have chest hair and moustaches.<lb /><lb />But next time you're thinking about making fun<lb /><lb />T of Abba, Google one of their album covers. Look at<lb />them staring back at you, standing closely in blonde<lb />locks and silver capes, so earnest.<lb /><lb />In a sea of ironic music for ironic consumption,<lb />Abba is genuine. So, in the words of the Scandinavian<lb />super group themselves, oTake a chance? on Abba.<lb /><lb />Why is Britney<lb /><lb />national news?<lb /><lb />Is this what we want to be like?<lb /><lb />JASON PATTY<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Britney Spears shaved her head. Apparently, she<lb />also got anew tattoo. Somehow, this is national news.<lb />This girl, not much older than most of the students<lb />at ECU, is the epitome of an attention-hungry, self<lb />centered. diva.<lb /><lb />The worst part is that sheTis only one of many<lb />that take up television airwaves in a dumbing-down<lb />of our country.<lb /><lb />These celebrities are role models for millions of<lb />Americans. They are not good role models, mind<lb />you, but the public watches and discusses their<lb />every move, children and young adults all over the<lb />country see this type of behavior as what makes<lb />you famous.<lb /><lb />They are setting horrible examples for relation-<lb />ships, parenting, social life, education, financial<lb />responsibility and life in general. We are constantly<lb />bombarded with stories and pictures of their horrible<lb />indiscretions and irresponsibility. They have the<lb />money and exposure to cause great change and have a<lb />huge impact on American society; yet, they constantly<lb />show us exactly what we should not want to be.<lb /><lb />Granted, there must be difficulties associated<lb />with being a celebrity and certainly all celebrities<lb />are not bad influences on society. There are count-<lb />less people who use their money and fame to be a<lb />positive influence.<lb /><lb />Why then, are the bad apples all that we see?<lb />Why are Britney, Paris and LindsayTs latest night-<lb />out all over the news?<lb /><lb />These girls obviously have some serious social,<lb />emotional and addiction issues that they need to deal<lb />with. We need to leave them alone and stop putting<lb />their behavior on a pedestal. It must be difficult to<lb />live life when every mistake you make is known to<lb />the free world within 12 hours. Let them go to rehab<lb />without cameras following their every move.<lb /><lb />LetTs spend our money applauding those that have<lb />their lives together, those celebrities that remain<lb />faithful to their spouses and take care of their chil-<lb />dren. Applaud those that donate their money and<lb />time to causes that benefit society, and those that<lb />are not in and out of rehab every week.<lb /><lb />These are the celebrities that we should emu-<lb />late and that we should reward with our time and<lb />attention.<lb /><lb />{ oKor *yourveyes,<lb /><lb />only.?<lb /><lb />TUESDAY FEBRUARY 20, 2007<lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />Suggestion: DonTt read Pirate Rants in<lb />class during lectures. Unfortunately, this is exactly<lb />what some in the White House are preparing.<lb /><lb />Dick Cheney, President Bush and the rest of the<lb />oNeo-Conservatives? in Washington are salivating<lb />over the chance to attack Iran and recently they have<lb />made it clear of their intentions.<lb /><lb />The Bush administration has been prepping<lb />public opinion of Iran for almost a year now and<lb />many think this is the preface to an invasion as early<lb />as this spring.<lb /><lb />In announcing his osurge? of American troops<lb />in Iraq, President Bush identified what I see as clear<lb />intent to attack Iran. President Bush declared, oWe<lb />will interrupt the flow of support [to the insurgency in<lb />Iraq] from Iran and Syria,? continuing with o.. .we will<lb /><lb />seek out and destroy the networks providing advanced<lb /><lb />weaponry and training to our enemies in Iraq.?<lb /><lb />By onetworks,? Bush is talking about Iran, and<lb />the Neoconservatives in Washington are doing<lb />everything they can to find oevidence? that Iran is<lb />fueling the war in Iraq.<lb /><lb />A U.S. State Department official said at the end<lb />of January that oIranian agents are involved in these<lb />networks and that they are working with individuals<lb />and groups in Iraq and are being sent there by the<lb />Iranian government.?<lb /><lb />Like the oirrefutable evidence? provided to us<lb />by Tony Blair and George Bush that got us into<lb />the war in Iraq in the first place, this information<lb />completely lacks credibility. Investigations by the.<lb />New York Times, the Los Angeles Times and British<lb />military officials conclude that the Iranian govern-<lb />ment is not involved in supplying weapons to the<lb />fighters in Iraq.<lb /><lb />In fact, one day after the U.S. military charged<lb />IranTs government of shipping powerful explosives to<lb />Shiite Muslim fighters in Iraq to use against Ameri-<lb />éan troops, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff,<lb />Marine Gen. Peter Pace, said that he hasnTt seen any<lb />intelligence to support the claim.<lb /><lb />Even as the American disaster in Iraq worsens<lb />and domestic and foreign opposition to the war<lb />grows, oneo-con? lunatics in the White House con-<lb />tinue to dangerously promote another myth; IranTs<lb />nuclear threat to: the United States.<lb /><lb />Iran possesses no nuclear weapons, nor have they<lb />threatened to build one. Experts in the CIA estimate<lb />that, even if they wanted to, Iran is incapable of build-<lb />ing a nuclear weapon before 2017.<lb /><lb />Unlike Israel: and the United States, Iran has<lb />abided by the rules of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation<lb />Treaty and has permitted routine inspections by the<lb />International Atomic Energy Agency. No report by<lb />the IAEA has ever cited Iran for diverting its civilian<lb />nuclear program to military use.<lb /><lb />As many of you are foaming at the mouth with<lb />anger and disbelief at any of what I just said, just<lb />think about the sheer historical facts. Iran has never<lb />aggressively attacked another country, unlike the<lb />United States.<lb /><lb />The last time Iran went to war, was in 1980 when<lb />the Saddam Hussein invaded their country with the<lb />financial and military backing of none other than the<lb />U.S. Why would they start now?<lb /><lb />On the other hand, there are numerous U.S.<lb />naval ships deployed in the eastern Mediterranean<lb />Sea, within firing range of Iran and there are more<lb />on the way. War is on the horizon and it is clear who<lb />the real threat is.<lb /><lb />Sarah Bell<lb />Editor in Chief<lb /><lb />Jenelle Conner Rachel King<lb /><lb />News Editor Opinion Editor<lb />Greg Katski Ronnie Woodward<lb />Sports Editor Asst. Now with wins over<lb />UTEP and Tulane, the Pirates<lb />have moved into a tie for third place<lb />in the C-USA standings.<lb /><lb />SundayTs matchup was the<lb />Pirates final home game of the<lb />season (14-13, 9-5 C-USA), and<lb />ECU made'the most of it. The<lb />Pirates have now won five C-USA<lb />games in a row, which ties for<lb />the longest winning streak in the<lb />programTs history. TulaneTs defeat<lb />also contributes to the most C-<lb />USA wins in ECU history.<lb /><lb />After a Tulane basket opened<lb />the game, a jumper by Cherie<lb />Mills tied the game, 2-2, with two<lb />minutes off the clock. The Pirates<lb />continued to press forward, con-<lb />trolling the boards before a trey by<lb />Nikki Luckhurst brought Tulane<lb />within three, 11-8, with 13:11 left<lb />in the half. The Green Wave went<lb />ona 5-0 run to tie the game at 13-<lb />13. ECU came back with a 9-0 run,<lb />taking back the lead, 22-13, with<lb />7:28 to go in the first.<lb /><lb />With two minutes left to play<lb />in the half, LaCoya Terry com-<lb />pleted two free throws and a<lb />basket, giving the Pirates their<lb />biggest lead of the game, 33-22.<lb />Tulane closed the 11-point gap<lb />with a 5-0 run before the end of<lb />the half. ECU entered the break<lb />leading 35-29.<lb /><lb />At the break, the Pirates con-<lb />trolled the rebounds 22-15. Both<lb />teams shot 39 percent, but the<lb />Pirates managed to make all of<lb />their free throws, while Tulane<lb />only shot 83 percent from the line.<lb />Mills led the half for ECU with<lb />nine points, while Terry and Gabri-<lb />ela Husarova each had six.<lb /><lb />Tulane went on a 7-4run as the<lb />second half began, continuing the<lb />momentum they built up at the énd<lb />of the first half. The run brought<lb />them back within three, 39-36. At<lb />16:24, a lay-up by Jami Montagnino<lb />tied the game 40-40. A jumper by<lb />Jasmine Young brought ECU<lb />back up 42-40, only for TulaneTs<lb />Alendra Brown to re-tie the game<lb />42-42 with 15:31 on the clock.<lb /><lb />The game flipped back in<lb />ECUTs favor when Young scored a<lb />trey at the 15:11 mark. ECU con-<lb />tinued to gain points from the free<lb />throw line until Tulane sunk two<lb />baskets bringing them to 48-46.<lb />A pair of free throws by Mills and<lb />a three-pointer from Jessica Slack<lb />gave the Pirates a seven-point lead,<lb /><lb />2. money<lb /><lb />3. more common sense<lb /><lb />about the sport: itTs not eee Common nse<lb />_ isso far above everything else, that nothing else really mat<lb />fk Hinchman, ee of the ECU ~" Ci<lb /><lb />igh you jump from: Anywhere between 13,000 and<lb /><lb />9,000 ret (almost three miles)<lb /><lb />ance in feet of freefall: Tandem jumps- parachuteis<lb />at 6,000 feet. The<lb />friends and teammates plan to<lb />do two-way events, in which two<lb />skydivers hold onto each other<lb />and do various formations and<lb />four-way events.<lb /><lb />oThereTs all kinds of different<lb />things that you can do, from free-<lb />flying, sitting and doing head-<lb />down. The time<lb />of duration in freefall from the<lb />initial plunge out of the plane to<lb />when the chute opens is usually<lb />between 50 and 60 seconds. The<lb />seconds of freefall vary depending<lb />on how heavy the student is.<lb /><lb />While in freefall it does not<lb />feel like you are falling at a<lb />speed illegal to be driving at on<lb />almost every road in the world<lb />but the Autobahn. In a<lb />split second, you are flung from<lb />freefall, and jerked back up into<lb />the sky.<lb /><lb />For almost the next five<lb />minutes you get the chance to<lb />view the world from a different<lb />perspective.
