Most people probably<lb />won't learn until theyTre forced<lb />to use it,? said Don Sweet, asso-<lb />ciate chief information officer<lb />and Banner project director.<lb /><lb />The first student informational<lb />session will be held Thursday, Feb.<lb />15 in Mendenhall 221 at.6:30 p.m.,<lb />which will train students to use the<lb />different modules of the program.<lb /><lb />The next informational session<lb />will be held on Wednesday, Feb.<lb />28, in Mendenhall 244 at 6:30 p.m.<lb /><lb />oThere will. be at least two<lb />information sessions this month<lb />and a couple next month,? Sweet<lb />said.<lb /><lb />Angela Anderson, Banner<lb />Student Functional Lead, said that<lb />registration stimulation has been a<lb />method used to test the effective-<lb />ness and usability of the program.<lb /><lb />oSo far we have received very<lb />good feedback from people who<lb />participated in the registration<lb /><lb />stimulation,? said Anderson.<lb />This type of practice testing |<lb /><lb />for Banner has been completed by<lb />student and faculty volunteers.<lb /><lb />vf According to thisisbanner.com,<lb />marketing tools to increase ECU's<lb />awareness of Banner have included<lb />bus posters, TV commercials,<lb />giant banners, direct e-mail, news-<lb />paper advertisements and more.<lb /><lb />The Web site also stated that<lb />administrators working on Banner<lb />met with SGA, the Residence Hall<lb />Association, the Interfraternity<lb />Council and Panhellenic Council<lb />to get input from members of the<lb />student body to come up with<lb />marketing strategies.<lb /><lb />Another tool to help the uni-<lb />versity learn about this new ser-<lb />vice has been accumulated into one<lb />full day of information.<lb /><lb />According to Sweet, an event<lb />called oBanner Up! Day? will occur<lb />on March 21 in Wright Plaza.<lb /><lb />This event will help students<lb />and faculty understand how to<lb />use Banner. The event is one day<lb />before students have their first<lb />opportunity to register for classes<lb />through Banner.<lb /><lb />Sweet said there will be des-<lb />ignated computer labs for course<lb />registration with Banner represen-<lb />tatives present to assist students.<lb /><lb />Some of the advantages of<lb />Banner listed on the Web site<lb />include the termination of Opal<lb />browser for course registration,<lb />elimination of social security<lb />numbers as student identification,<lb />compatibility for PCs and Macs<lb />and accessibility to distance educa-<lb />tion students.<lb /><lb />oOne of the biggest reasons<lb />why we're going to Banner is<lb />systems such as financial aid and<lb /><lb />Photo by Sarah Bell<lb /><lb />course registration have different<lb />setups and this puts it all on one<lb />system,? Martin Luthér King Jr. is to<lb />be honored in this county contin-<lb />ues to be up for debate.<lb /><lb />According to Keith Cooper,<lb />co-chair of the Fifth Street/MLK<lb />Completion Committee, the issue<lb />has been active since 1989 when<lb />local community leaders expressed<lb />their interests in dedication of<lb />a street, road or major highway<lb />to the late Rev. Bees pollinate<lb />about a third of the food people eat.<lb />Jeff Lee, who rents out his honey-<lb />bees to pollinate crops of blueber-<lb />ries, cucumbers, watermelons and<lb />cantaloupes, said he started notic-<lb />ing an unusual trend a few months<lb /><lb />ago. When he would open a bee box,<lb />sometimes it would be empty.<lb /><lb />Lee estimated that he has lost about<lb />30 percent of his 1,000 bee colo-<lb />nies in the past six months.<lb /><lb />While the trend remains largely a<lb />mystery, experts have called the out-<lb /><lb />- break ocolony collapse syndrome.?<lb /><lb />oWe're really. concerned about: it,?<lb />said Charles Heatherly, president of<lb />the N.C. State Beekeepers Associa-<lb />tion. oEvery time you turn around, it<lb />seems like another plague is affect-<lb />ing bees.?<lb /><lb />Since the mid-1980s, honeybees<lb />have also been plagued by two ex-<lb />otic parasitic mites. Entomologists<lb />at North Carolina State University<lb />estimate that those mites have cut<lb />the number of managed hives in<lb />North Carolina from 180,000 to<lb />about 100,000.<lb /><lb />But Adolphus Leonard, a bee in-<lb />spector with the N.C. Department of<lb />Agriculture, said bees are now dying<lb />without explanation. He estimated<lb />that some 30 to 40 percent of east-<lb />ern North Carolina bees have been<lb />lost to colony collapse syndrome.<lb /><lb />DOWNTUBE<lb /><lb />continued from Al<lb /><lb />eventually sell Downtubes at the<lb />Bicycle Post in Greenville.<lb /><lb />The name oDowntube? may<lb />seem crazy to non-cyclists, but<lb />it is actually relevant to bikes.<lb />A bike contains different parts<lb />which include the down tube, head<lb />tube, seat tube and top tube. The<lb />brand name oDowntubeT is writ-<lb />ten across the actual down tube<lb />of the bike.<lb /><lb />The bikes start at $300 and<lb /><lb />range up to $500. This may sound<lb />expensive, but is moderately cheap<lb />compared to competing fold-up<lb />bike companies. Usually, mid-grade<lb />bikes range from $800 to $1,000.<lb /><lb />oI think. itTs a great bike for<lb />the money. It performs very well<lb />compared to the other folding<lb />bikes ITve tried out,? said profes-<lb />sor Morgan Griddings from the<lb />University of North Carolina at<lb />Chapel Hill.<lb /><lb />According to Griddings, the<lb />oDowntube? bike can even be<lb />folded up and fit into a suitcase<lb />to take on an airplane. It is con-<lb />venient to take while traveling or<lb />Just to use as transportation to and<lb />from school or work.<lb /><lb />oWhenever the weather is<lb />warm, I would ride the bike to<lb />school. I live about three miles<lb />away from campus. It gives me a<lb />great workout,? said ECU associate<lb />professor of statistics Said E. Said<lb /><lb />Downtube bikes fit<lb />almost everyone because the<lb />handlebars are adjustable for their<lb />height and angle. The ability<lb />to adjust the bikes is helpful so<lb />people will have the right length<lb />of arm space that they need.<lb /><lb />Last year Downtube sold about<lb />3,000 bikes and Lyansky hopes to<lb />double that amount this year.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb /><lb />/ news@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />BANNER continued from Al<lb /><lb />Sweet also said that the admis-<lb />sions portion of the student module<lb />took effect Oct. 2006 while the<lb />financial aid module started on<lb />Feb. 12.<lb /><lb />oThe student financial aid<lb /><lb />team successfully pulled the 2007<lb /><lb />" 2008 financial aid records from<lb />the U.S. Department of Education<lb /><lb />on Monday, Feb. 12,? said Rose -<lb /><lb />Mary Stelma, assistant vice chan-<lb />cellor for student financial aid.<lb /><lb />oWe feel that we'll be fully up<lb />and running for 2007-2008 finan-<lb />cial aid processing by the end of<lb />the week,? <lb />ad<lb /><lb />Opinion<lb /><lb />The importance of<lb />the death penalty<lb /><lb />Why we must execute heinous offenders<lb /><lb />JASON PATTY<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />The Supreme Court of the United States of<lb />America declared that, oIndeed, the decision that<lb />capital punishment may be the appropriate sanc-<lb />tion in extreme cases is an expression of the com-<lb />munityTs belief that certain crimes are themselves<lb />so grievous an affront to humanity that the only<lb />adequate response may be the penalty of death.?<lb /><lb />The death penalty is a topic that is sure to<lb />incite strong reactions from both sides of the fence.<lb />Those against it claim that it is cruel and unusual<lb />and that no one deserves to die. The execution of<lb />heinous offenders serves as a Just punishment for the<lb />criminal and as a deterrent from crime for others.<lb /><lb />As the Supreme Court stated, sometimes the 5<lb />crimes committed are so terrible that the only 3<lb />- Just punishment is an execution. Life i prison is<lb /><lb />bad, but with cable TV and magazine subscrip-<lb />tions, sometimes it is better than life outside of<lb />jail. There is always the potential of parole in the<lb />future, releasing a criminal convicted of an atro-<lb />cious crime back into society. The most basic effect<lb />of capital punishment is that those executed can no<lb />longer commit harm to society. They will never<lb />again have an opportunity to rape or murder. Life in<lb />prison is expensive. It may sound harsh, but I donTt<lb />want my tax dollars supporting someone whose<lb />only contribution to society is rape and murder.<lb /><lb />The death penalty also acts as a deterrent for<lb />would-be criminals. Most crimes have a clear motive<lb />and most criminals have at least given precursory<lb />thought to not being caught. Even the most basic<lb />street thug will rob people in a dark alleyway and not<lb />on the most well lit streets. This shows that offenders<lb />are thinking about what they are doing before they<lb />do it. Statistics show that when punishments are<lb />increased, crime decreases. Saudi Arabia has almost<lb />no common robbery because they will cut your hand<lb />off for it. It generally only takes seeing one, one-<lb />handed man to make you think twice about stealing<lb />that wallet. The death penalty is used in the most ter-<lb />rible rapes and murders. Many of these are pre-medi-<lb />tated. That means that if a criminal really thought<lb />that we were serious about executions, then there is<lb />a chance that he would not go through with his plans<lb />and we would have successfully prevented a crime.<lb />Seeing someone else punished for something that you<lb />are considering doing really brings home the reality<lb />of the consequences that you may very well face.<lb /><lb />Most opponents of the death penalty argue that<lb />it is cruel and unusual and no crime committed is<lb /><lb />worth taking a human life. I think that most of<lb /><lb />these people would change their tune very quickly<lb />if the circumstances were personal. If the person<lb />raped or murdered were their co-worker, neighbor<lb />or family member they would want justice. They<lb /><lb />would want the assurance that this criminal wouldT:<lb /><lb />never strike again and they would want an example<lb />made so that others would know the consequences<lb />of these actions. It seems hypocritical to not want<lb />this type of justice given to all of those that deserve<lb />it. While the death penalty is an extreme form<lb />of punishment, let us not forget that in order to<lb />receive it you must commit crimes that are hor-<lb />rible in nature. The things that those on death row<lb />have done are so far above and beyond a painless<lb />execution that the two are not even comparable.<lb /><lb />If we execute a criminal and he serves as a<lb />deterrent to one other potential criminal, then<lb />we have saved an innocent victim from a hor-<lb />rible crime. This seems worth it in itself to me.<lb />We must have a sense of serious consequence for<lb />serious crimes. Without it, there is nothing to<lb />prevent those wanting to destroy lives. There is no<lb />more serious consequence than the death penalty.<lb />Used justlyT and quickly it will prevent criminals<lb />from destroying the lives of law-abiding citizens.<lb /><lb />Happy Single<lb />Awareness Day<lb /><lb />A tribute to those not in a blissful<lb />relationship<lb /><lb />MARGOT ROGERSON<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />I woke up yesterday morning, as any morning,<lb />got ready and went to school. On my way to class,<lb />I asked someone the date of the day. She looked at<lb />me surprisingly, oItTs ValentineTs Day.? Maybe it is<lb />because I have been single for too long, but I really do<lb />not put much emphasis on this holiday. Some might<lb />even say that I am not qualified to write on the topic.<lb /><lb />My best friend, however, was a wreck. She and<lb />her boyfriend broke up a month or so ago, and I am<lb />not sure if she has ever spent a ValentineTs Day by<lb />herself. I felt genuinely bad for her because I could<lb />see how much she cared not to have someone with<lb />which to share the day. I am sure it would be much<lb />harder for those singles who are not used to being<lb />alone on ValentineTs Day.<lb /><lb />The day before ValentineTs Day I happened to be<lb /><lb />sitting with one of my guy friends as he was briefing<lb /><lb />me about one of his classes. Towards the end of the<lb />conversation he stated that one of his teachers had<lb />referred to ValentineTs Day as, oSingle Awareness<lb />Day.? I thought the phrase was hysterically funny<lb />and clever. Sometimes I wonder how many people<lb />take it too personally that they are alone.<lb /><lb />For all those that feel like being alone on Valen-<lb />tineTs Day is equally as bad as being shot execution<lb />style. It isnTt. I am sure you are a fabulous person,<lb />who has just not had the opportunity to meet the one<lb />that can make you smile when you feel like crying,<lb />who will meet every expectation and then some and<lb />who will finish your sentences because he or she<lb />already knows what you are thinking. But you will.<lb />It may not be today, or next week or the person you<lb />will marry, but there are people out there that will<lb />care about you. And believe me; you are not alone.<lb />So to my best friend, you are not alone, and I care<lb />about you. CNN<lb /><lb />News outlet shows what not to do<lb /><lb />JONATHAN GARDNER<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />When your child acts up and you donTt know<lb />what to do, what are your options? When parent-<lb />ing books leave you helpless and you believe thereTs<lb />nothing that can be done, where do you turn?, Well,<lb /><lb />T over the last couple days, CNN has become as good<lb /><lb />a source as any. As of late, all over the country, there<lb />have been parents performing horrid acts on their<lb />children, leaving the readers questioning: Who<lb />allowed these people to breed?<lb /><lb />In Pittsburgh, Penn., a man is being charged<lb />with homicide of his 2-year-old daughter and<lb />sexually abusing another child in the house. The<lb />man, angry that his daughter wouldn't go to sleep,<lb />knocked her unconscious, walked inside and left<lb />her in the snow to die. He then filed a police report,<lb />claiming someone had taken his daughter. While:<lb />investigating this, another child in the house. told<lb />investigators about the sexual abuse.<lb /><lb />In New Orleans, La., a teenager and his mother<lb />have been arrested on aueder charges, after the<lb />teen brought a gun to a fist fight. According to<lb />the teen, he brought the gun to the fight after his<lb /><lb />bther: told him to find his rival, bystanders and<lb />okill them all.? Police have not stated why they<lb />believe the mother had involvement, but when they<lb />arrived to arrest her, they found small amounts of<lb />cocaine and a wad of cash.<lb /><lb />Finally, in Jonesboro, Ga., a man is facing<lb />child cruelty charges? after lacing the soup. of<lb />his 18-month-old daughter an@ 3-year-old son<lb />twice. He first fed his children soup with hot peppers<lb />and lighter fluid, followed by soup laced with Prozac<lb />and Amitriptyline, He has already plead guilty<lb /><lb />to filing false claims, after he threatened to sue<lb />Campbell Soup Company when his children fell<lb />ill.<lb /><lb />And while these acts are horrifying, despicable<lb />and completely unthinkable, not one of them made<lb />the headline of CNN. The news outlet felt their<lb />space was better used for crazy diaper-wearing<lb />astronauts or the death of an actress who received<lb />her biggest coverage after she died. Traveling 900<lb />miles to pepper spray a rival is interesting, but not<lb />worth the time it was given in the news. And when<lb />it comes to deaths, children fatalities should beat<lb />the death of a B-list celebrity that lost all appeal<lb />long ago. The media needs to start focusing on what<lb />really matters and stop appealing to the glamour of<lb />oddity and celebrities.<lb /><lb />When did. death<lb />become the answer?<lb /><lb />An exploration into the paradox of<lb />capital punishment<lb /><lb />ALEX LAROCCA<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />The Guillotine, firing squad, electric chair,<lb />gas chamber and: now lethal injection have all<lb />become oimmoral? methods of execution over the<lb />past decades. Whether you want to refer to it as<lb />murder, killing or execution, there is one thing that<lb />many of us have in common: We are, not subjected<lb />to these things on a daily basis, or for that matter,<lb />on an annual one. In this society we tip-toe around<lb />the subject of death as if it cannot happen to any<lb />of us and we treat the subject of execution as the<lb />ultimate of all punishments. This is a fact and I<lb />dare not deny this, and I doubt you should either,<lb />so why is it that we bother to execute those we<lb />condemn when we cannot come to a moral census?<lb /><lb />The death penalty is an ongoing issue among<lb />Americans from state to state and each government<lb />varies on its laws and methods of execution. Not only<lb />can we not come to a conclusion as to if the death<lb />penalty is a moral one, but we cannot even come to<lb />a national conclusion as to which method of death is<lb />the more ohumane? way. LetTs face facts people. When<lb />you kill someone it hurts; it hurts to a measure that<lb />we cannot understand until it is our time. Many of<lb />us fear this time and yet some are willing to delve<lb />out this sentence as if they had the hand of God.<lb /><lb />There are people who do not consider the con-<lb />sequences of murder no matter what. Are we really<lb />to think if someone was planning on murder, which,<lb />in most cases murder does not happen this way, if<lb />they were on a state line between a state which has<lb />capital punishment and one that doesnTt they would<lb />reconsider depending on which state line they<lb />crossed? Sorry, but any form of murder is not con-<lb />sidered in a rational way, no matter the consequences.<lb /><lb />Look at the societies that practice the most<lb />brutal of all capital punishments: Iran, Saudi<lb />Arabia, Somalia, China and so on. These are coun-<lb />tries which have a large lacking of one quality<lb />which we take for granted: Education. No matter<lb />what most people of this country, and Europe for<lb />that matter, are children of enlightened thinking.<lb />In this thought process we give so much more to<lb />life and reconsider the subject of murder. These<lb />countries that, although perhaps advanced in some<lb />fields, lack in general education for their citizens.<lb /><lb />Now let us return back to the United States. It<lb />is a fact that education deters crime, and for that<lb />matter, violent crime. If we were to take the expen-<lb />sive costs of capital punishment and perhaps apply it<lb />to, letTs say, education, is it not then easily deducted<lb />that crime would decrease? This country is not well<lb />known for the way in which it treats teachers or pays<lb />them. A study done by Duke University concluded<lb />that a death penalty trial takes four times as long<lb />as a non-death penalty trial and cost $200,000<lb />more. Think of if that money went towards public<lb />education instead of wasting it on lengthy capital<lb />punishment trials. If we look outside North Carolina<lb />towards other states with capital punishment, we<lb />see spending that is just flat out wasted. In Texas<lb />it costs tax payers $2.3 million each year on capital<lb />punishment and Florida it costs $3.2 million. In<lb />1991, 500 officers were fired in New Jersey while the<lb />death penalty cost tax payers $18 million a year. In<lb />Florida $45 million was cut from the Department<lb />of Corrections causing the release of 3,000 inmates.<lb />Are we not in the midst of a paradox here? Does it<lb />not cause more crime if there are fewer cops? Does<lb />it not cause more crime to release inmates early?<lb /><lb />I understand the recycled rhetoric of oWhat if<lb />your parents were murdered?? Well unfortunately<lb />I donTt live in an age where I could go and avenge<lb />my parents in some turn of ironic slaughter. I live<lb />in an age where I cannot kill my parent's, friendTs<lb />or siblingTs murderer. Not only that I am raised<lb />in a society which does not promote violence and<lb />death. If that makes us cowards or gutless then<lb />that is fine because it just means I will be allowed<lb />to live longer and not have to worry about death at<lb />every corner. I do not want to pay taxes for capital<lb />punishment that takes years to be enacted. It is an<lb />undeniable fact that if we were to take that same<lb />money and give it to education then crime would<lb />decrease. If you understand more about life then<lb />you learn to respect it. Killing has been around<lb />long enough for us to realize that it just causes<lb />more killing. Isn't it time we tried something new?<lb /><lb />Sarah Bell,<lb />Editor in Chief<lb />Jenelle Conner Rachel King<lb />News Editor Opinion Editor<lb />Greg Katski Ronnie Woodward<lb />Sports Editor Asst. After this evidently<lb />necessary clarification is made,<lb />the song oThriller? immediately<lb />kicks in with punchy guitar riffs<lb />anda seemingly otougher? sound<lb />than Fall Out Boy has previ-<lb />ously presented, reminding us<lb />that they are sticking with their<lb />pop-punk origins.<lb /><lb />No two songs sound. alike on<lb />this album, which may or may<lb />not be a.good thing. There is a<lb />mix of random sampling, choral<lb />extravagancies, symphonic string<lb />accompaniments and the occa-<lb />sional guitar or two. The first<lb />few songs are pretty tradémark<lb />of Fall Out Boy (rock numbers<lb />with catchy choruses), but the<lb />album wraps up with a variety of<lb />experimental tracks that cover all<lb />the musical bases.<lb /><lb />There are a few tracks that<lb />stand out as especially unexpected:<lb />The song entitled oGolden? is<lb />a surprise in that it is a ballad<lb />featuring a surplus of piano while<lb />singer Patrick Stump pours<lb />his heart out.<lb /><lb />While some bands can pull<lb />off the emotional numbers, Fall<lb />Out Boy isnTt necessarily one of<lb />them. If<lb />we would have taken the body on<lb />Saturday the way we did on Friday<lb />we would have beat them.?<lb /><lb />On Friday night against the<lb />Tigers, the Pirates came to play<lb />from the get go. Mitchell Sears<lb />scored the first goal for ECU with<lb />9:12 remaining in the first period.<lb />Zach Johnston followed with a goal<lb />less that a minute later. Seth Percy<lb />added another goal with 3:59 left<lb />in the period and the Pirates held a<lb />3-0 advantage after the first.<lb /><lb />The second period started<lb />exactly where the first period left<lb />off. Within the first eight min-<lb />utes of the period, Dan OTHeney,<lb />Dan Duda and Pat Szwec had all<lb />scored to give ECU a strong 6-0<lb />lead. <lb />THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 2007<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN * HOUSING GUIDE<lb /><lb />Center for Off-Campus<lb /><lb />and Community Living<lb /><lb />expands studentsT<lb /><lb />knowledge<lb /><lb />Teaches good<lb />citizenship<lb /><lb />CONTRIBUTED ARTICLE<lb /><lb />The Center for Off-Campus and<lb />Community Living at ECU adds<lb />to the academic knowledge gained<lb />at ECU by educating students<lb />on the freedom and the respon-<lb />sibilities of living off-campus.<lb /><lb />Many students, at some point<lb />in their college career, decide to<lb />live off-campus. With living off-<lb />campus comes the responsibility<lb />of not only being a student at<lb />ECU but now also being a resi-<lb />dent of the City of Greenville.<lb /><lb />Therefore COCCL educates<lb />students on tenant rights, city<lb />ordinances, how to be a good<lb />neighbor and citizen of Greenville,<lb />and how to become a thriving<lb />member of the Greenville/ECU<lb />community. The Center contains<lb />three main branches: Town-gown<lb />relations, off-campus housing and<lb />off-campus safety.<lb /><lb />Town-gown Relations refers<lb />to how students and the Univer-<lb />sity interact with the surrounding<lb />city and citizens. This section of<lb />COCCLiis an advocate for ECUTs<lb />off-campus population and serves<lb />as a liaison between students,<lb />the city, ECU and permanent<lb />residents of the community by<lb />educating and empowering stu-<lb />dents on how to become a good<lb />neighbor of their community and<lb />a good citizen of Greenville.<lb /><lb />Students are encouraged to<lb />meet and greet their neighbors,<lb />because getting to know them can<lb />eliminate problems in the future.<lb />Michelle Lieberman, director of<lb />COCCL, has been charged with<lb />this branch.<lb /><lb />oWe educate students on the<lb />responsibilities that is expected of<lb />them, as they move into a commu-<lb />nity and become citizens of the City<lb />of Greenville,? said Lieberman.<lb /><lb />Safety is always a major con-<lb />cern when living off-campus.<lb /><lb />To help address these con-<lb />cerns, COCCL has recently added<lb />an Off-Campus Community Police<lb />Liaison position to their staff.<lb /><lb />Sgt. Stephanie Carnevale,<lb />ECU Police, will be working in<lb />conjunction with liaisons from the<lb />Greenville Police Department to<lb />specifically work with off-campus<lb />students to help safeguard them<lb /><lb />from becoming victims.<lb /><lb />Some of the programs that<lb />will be offered include: RAD self-<lb />defense training, alcohol and drug<lb />awareness training, date rape<lb />awareness, operation identifica-<lb />tion (engraving your valuables)<lb />and safety walk-through of resi-<lb />dences. "<lb /><lb />oWe have had a great response<lb />for the RAD training we are<lb />having this March. We had a<lb />class size estimated at 20 and<lb />had to close the registration at 25<lb />women,? Carnevale said.<lb /><lb />Sgt. Carnevale will also be<lb />going out into the local neighbor-<lb />hoods and meeting with students<lb />and residents to help establish<lb />better relations in the local com-<lb />munity. If you have any further<lb />questions or would like to contact<lb />the office to set up a specific pro-<lb />gram, they can be reached online<lb />at AIM: ecuocsafety, or e-mail<lb />direct at Carnevales@ecu.edu.<lb /><lb />COCCL can also help stu-<lb />dents with their off-campus<lb />housing, including the search<lb />for good living conditions or<lb />lease/landlord agreements and<lb />conflicts. COCCL will have an<lb />online searchable database for off-<lb />campus housing in mid-March<lb />2007 for students, parents, faculty<lb />and staff.<lb /><lb />Additionally, COCCL will<lb />host an off-campus housing fair on<lb />March 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.<lb />in Mendenhall Student Center<lb />for students to explore future<lb />off-campus housing possibilities.<lb /><lb />Justin Gross, who oversees<lb />this branch as the assistant direc-<lb />tor of the center is pleased in<lb />the progress they are making to<lb />ensure good living conditions for<lb />ECU students.<lb /><lb />oWe are provided a great<lb />service to the students that allows<lb />them to see the whole spectrum<lb />of the off-campus housing options<lb />in Greenville. This can be over-<lb />whelming for students, who are<lb />trying to find the best place to<lb />live from the 120 plus apart-<lb />ment communities in the city of<lb />Greenville,? Gross said.<lb /><lb />The Center for Off-Campus<lb /><lb />and Community Living is avail-<lb />able online at ecu.edu/studentlife/<lb />offcampus. For more information,<lb />contact them by phone at 252-<lb />328-2847, by e-mail at snrf@<lb />ecu.edu, or by AIM at ECUOff-<lb />Campus.<lb /><lb />The East Saran IMed the Caner for oft oie Bonnie Living to<lb />learn about reponsible party-throwing, messy neighbors and fireworks snafus<lb /><lb />EastCarolinian: Testing... testing..<lb />ECUOffCampus: Good afternoon<lb />ECUOffCampus: How is it going?<lb /><lb />EastCarolinian: Hi, this is the East Carolinian. We received a press release about the services<lb />you offer students through the Center for Off-Campus Community Living today.<lb /><lb />ECUOffCampus: yes, that is us<lb /><lb />EastCarolinian: Do you mind if we ask you a few questions?<lb /><lb />ECUOffCampus: go for it<lb /><lb />EastCarolinian: OK, our newsroom is wondering what tips you have for throwing a party off campus<lb /><lb />ECUOffCampus: This is a link to our Web site that list some tips on how to have a responsible party:<lb />ecu.edu/cs-studentlife/offcampus/Responsible-Party-Off-Campus.cfm.<lb /><lb />EastCarolinian: Sorry to be a pain, but our readers won't be able to use that hyperlink. Is there<lb />any way you could outline those points for me in this chat?<lb /><lb />ECUOffCampus: OK that is fine with us<lb /><lb />ECUOffCampus: one of the first things students should consider is to let their neighbors know when<lb />they will be having a party. This notification should be at least 24 to 48 hours before the party. This<lb />can be done either by talking to their neighbors or with a note. In either case, they should provide<lb />contact information of someone responsible and sober at the party. This is in case of a noise issue.<lb /><lb />ECUOffCampus: Second, avoid overcrowding which might: (1) Block apartment's exits in case of<lb />any emergency, (2) result in vehicles blocking your street in case fire, police and/or medical units<lb />need to respond and/or (3) force your guest to inappropriately use ooutdoor bathroom facilities.?<lb /><lb />ECUOffCampus: Third, periodically during the night, walk outside to check the noise level and adjust<lb />it accordingly. Also remember that voices cany and just by moving the party indoors you can avoid<lb />disturbing your neighbors. :<lb /><lb />ECUOffCampus: Next, understand that as a student of ECU, you are also responsible<lb />for upholding the rules and sanctions of the Code of Conduct for Off-Campus events.<lb /><lb />ECUOffCampus: We recommend that after the party you clean up around your house/apartment as<lb />well as your neighbors, if needed, in a timely manner.<lb /><lb />EastCarolinian: OK, weTll make sure we clean up after our guests. But what about neighbors<lb /><lb />who donTt clean up after theirs, or leave mattresses, old furniture and/or appliances on the edge.<lb /><lb />of their yards, that we have to look at? Is there any way we can speed that cleanup process?<lb />ECUOffCampus: That is a city code violation, and students need to contact the city at 329-4110<lb />ECUOffCampus: or they can call the general information line at 329-CITY<lb /><lb />EastCarolinian: Will do. Last but not least, we know there is a leash law for dogs. But what about cats?<lb />ECUOffCampus: As far as we know there is not a leash law for cats.<lb /><lb />EastCarolinian: Why not? Cats are pretty mangy.<lb /><lb />ECUOffCampus: You'll have to ask the city about that one, lol.<lb /><lb />EastCarolinian: What about boa constrictors? My roommate wants one.<lb /><lb />ECUOffCampus: Oh my, this office does not like snakes.<lb /><lb />EastCarolinian: Yeah, me either. Hey, we know itTs illegal to discharge a firearm in Greenville,<lb />but are there any exceptions? Do any apartments have special rules about owning a gun?<lb /><lb />ECUOffCampus: We are not-sure on any rules about owning a gun, however it is illegal to discharge<lb />a firearm within the city limits, no exceptions.<lb /><lb />EastCarolinian: Alright. A layout designer wanted to know if discharging a weapon was allowed<lb />if someone was trying to harm you. 1Tll let him know.<lb /><lb />ECUOffCampus: Self-defense is allowed, if needed.<lb />ECUOffCampus: The ordinance is to stop people from discharging weapons like fireworks.<lb /><lb />EastCarolinian: Yeah, his karate needs some work. Fireworks are weapons? Seriously?<lb />ECUOffCampus: They can be<lb />EastCarolinian: Sparklers turned taser... hmm...<lb />ECUOffCampus: How/when are you going to publish this?<lb /><lb />EastCarolinian: Well, weTre publishing it in our Housing Insert so students-will know to watch<lb />where they point those fireworks.<lb /><lb />ECUOffCampus: That sounds great, thank you. We appreciate you helping us get the word out.<lb /><lb />EastCarolinian: No problem, this IM screenname is nifty. We wish more departments had one.<lb />When is the screenname typically online?<lb /><lb />ECUOffCampus: Generally from 8 a.m. to 5 p. m. more or less and an off-campus safety branch IM<lb /><lb />screen name will be on-line shortly.<lb /><lb />EastCarolinian: Very cool, thanks for your time<lb /><lb />Choosing your oHome Sweet Home?<lb /><lb />Factors in finding<lb />a place to call your<lb />own<lb /><lb />SARAH CAMPBELL<lb />PULSE EDITOR<lb /><lb />Spring semester is in full<lb />swing and many students are<lb />beginning to make decisions for<lb />next year. One of the hardest<lb />and most important things they<lb />have to decide on is where to live.<lb />Students can choose to live on<lb />campus in a dorm, or off campus<lb />in an apartment or house. Each<lb />of these options comes with their<lb />own set of pros and cons, but<lb />the deciding factor is ultimately<lb />based on personal preference.<lb /><lb />Lets start with dorm life,<lb />which is an option predomi-<lb />nately chosen by underclass-<lb />men that are exploring the idea<lb />of living away from home for<lb />the first time. The best thing<lb />about living in a dorm is that<lb />they are on campus and within<lb />' walking distance to all of your<lb />classes as well as the library,<lb />student recreation center and<lb />various dining options. Living<lb />in the residence halls also have<lb />various benefits including free<lb />laundry facilities, cable televi-<lb />sion, high-speed Internet, daily<lb />newspapers, computer lab access<lb />and phone service.<lb /><lb />Although the residence halls<lb />themselves vary, the rooms<lb />within each hall offer the same<lb />amenities. Each room comes<lb />fully furnished with beds, desks,<lb />chairs, window blinds, closet<lb />or wardrobe space and micro-<lb /><lb />fridges. On the first floor of<lb />Z \<lb /><lb />each dorm, there is study/lounge<lb />area for students to escape to.<lb />Another positive is that once you<lb />pay your room and board fees for<lb />that semester you donTt have to<lb />worry about paying any more<lb />living expenses.<lb /><lb />Despite the many obvious<lb />attractive qualities of living<lb />on campus, there are also<lb />several downfalls. The com-<lb />plaint most students have is<lb />that living in a single room<lb />with another person can be a<lb />bit unbearable at times. You<lb />essentially have no privacy<lb />because there is a distinct pos-<lb />sibility that you and your room-<lb />mate will share a similar sched-<lb />ule. Living in rooms that are<lb />right beside each other can also<lb />be a huge negative considering<lb />your neighbors may be loud and<lb />unruly, luckily each floor has a<lb />resident advisor that is trained<lb />to handle such situations.<lb /><lb />Off campus options include<lb />both apartments and houses.<lb />The difference between the two<lb />isnTt substantial, however it is<lb />important to recognize that like<lb />the dorms they each come with<lb />their own set of pros and cons.<lb /><lb />Apartments are the most<lb />popular choice among upper-<lb />classmen that are tired of dorm<lb />life and searching for a place to<lb />call home. There are many local<lb />apartment complexes that are<lb />included on the ECU bus: route<lb />or have their own bus to provide<lb />students with quick and easy<lb />access to campus.<lb /><lb />There are a vast number of<lb />complexes that offer amenities<lb />especially catered to college<lb />students. Apartments come fur-<lb />nished or unfurnished depending<lb />on preference. Furnished apart-<lb /><lb />_every month can save stu-<lb /><lb />ments include full-sized beds,<lb />desks, chairs, sofa, end<lb />table, dresser, night-<lb />stand and kitchen<lb />table with chairs.<lb />Some other benefits<lb />include a refrigera-.<lb />tor, washer and dryer,<lb />dishwasher, Internet,<lb />private bathrooms and<lb />large closet space. Of |<lb />course, these things<lb />are going to vary from<lb />complex te complex but<lb />the overall advantages<lb />are about the same.<lb />Utilities, water and<lb />sewage, cable and high-<lb />speed Internet are often<lb />bundled with the rent<lb />of the apartment. Not<lb />having to remember to<lb />pay more than one bill<lb /><lb />dents from credit problems<lb />down the road. The only<lb />disadvantage of having these<lb />things included is that you<lb />are only allotted a set amount<lb />of utilities each month and if<lb />you go over you can be facing<lb />unexpected charges.<lb /><lb />Students looking for a place<lb />that is more like a home away<lb /><lb />from home rather than just a<lb /><lb />place to live often search for a<lb />house. There are many houses<lb />within walking distance to<lb />campus that can be rented out<lb />to students. Living in a house<lb />can provide students with a<lb />larger living area as well as more<lb /><lb />. freedom.<lb /><lb />However, houses donTt include<lb />things such as cable, Internet,<lb />water, sewage and utilities in the<lb />rent and having to pay for each<lb />thing separately can become a bit<lb />pricey. In additioxT, most houses<lb /><lb />donTt come furnished which<lb />means you are looking at the<lb />possibility of spending hundreds<lb />of dollars. If you can get past the<lb />extra expenses that living in a<lb />house might entail, it is the ideal<lb />place % set up home.<lb /><lb />MCT<lb /><lb />In the end, the decision is<lb />yours and depending on personal<lb />preferences one of these options<lb />is bound to be the perfect place<lb />to call home.<lb /><lb />Pal<lb /><lb />PAGE B3<lb /><lb /></p>

          <lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN * HOUSING GUIDE<lb /><lb />ItTs Electric: Save on your bills<lb /><lb />SCOTTY WILLIAMS<lb />SENIOR WRITER<lb /><lb />ItTs the ultimate nemesis of all<lb />who want organized finances.<lb /><lb />ItTs the bane of the collegianTs<lb />existence and the solo cause of all<lb />discomfort associated with living<lb />off campus.<lb /><lb />I'm talking about the one<lb />piece of mail you never want to<lb />get. ThatTs right, the electric bill.<lb /><lb />Greenville " Utilities should<lb />never, ever go broke with the way<lb />they charge for lights and heat-<lb />ing. No matter how hard you try,<lb />the price is so sporadic your bud-<lb />get never feels quite the same<lb />month-to-month. With so many<lb />electric accounts in Greenville,<lb />thereTs an equal number of people<lb />who think they know exactly how to<lb />keep the bill down, and a lot of them<lb />haven't the foggiest as to where the<lb />real budget busters are.<lb /><lb />As a three-year veteran of the<lb />dreaded electric company, I feel<lb />highly qualified to inform you of<lb />the secrets to a minimized elec-<lb />tric bill. Keep in mind, planning<lb />to lower the bill significantly can<lb />be like game-planning to stop Mi-<lb />chael Jordan at basketball"you<lb />can never stop it, no matter what<lb />you do. You can only hope to con-<lb />tain it. But we'll take a crack at it.<lb /><lb />First, to all your friends and<lb />anal-retentive roommates who<lb />storm around the house turn-<lb />ing off the lights behind you and<lb />moaning and groaning about the<lb />electric bill, this will shut them<lb />up once and for all"the lights do<lb />not contribute the most to power<lb />usage. The truth is they use very<lb />little, and the same is true for the<lb />rest of the major appliances. If<lb />you were to turn off your com-<lb />puter every night, hit every light<lb />.as you leave and basically shut<lb />down your electric house at bed-<lb />time, it would not lower your bill<lb />that much.<lb /><lb />According to Greenville Utili-<lb />ties, one of the most money-sav-<lb />ing things you can do for your<lb />electric bill is to make sure your<lb />house is weather-sealed and win-<lb />dows are sealed properly; this can<lb /><lb />Welcome<lb /><lb />Pe RRERRBREAS<lb />@aeaunwe<lb /><lb />save up. to 30 percent on your bill.<lb />Some tips from the other side:<lb />The biggest gobbler of power<lb />is that lovely little sliding dial in<lb />your living room, the thermostat. If<lb />you have roommates that fight over<lb />it, be prepared for a high bill. The<lb />more you play with it, the higher<lb />the bill gets. The best thing toTdo<lb />is find one comfortable middle place<lb />and forget about it. Roommates who<lb />slide it up and down in a silent argu-<lb />ment will send your bill skyward,<lb />so work it out somehow. The U.S.<lb />Department of Energy actually rec-<lb />ommends a thermostat setting of 68<lb />degrees or lower in the winter. Per-<lb />sonally, for those of us who are hot<lb />natured, people who are cold can put<lb />on more clothes. Once you're hot, it<lb />could get awkward stripping off lay-<lb />ers of clothing trying to cool off.<lb />The washer and dryer can also<lb />be a problem, but here are a few<lb /><lb />simple solutions. For the<lb />washer, use cold water. Heat-<lb />ing the water uses power,<lb /><lb />and your clothes will be just as clean<lb />in cold water. (Hint: you donTt have<lb />to be a laundry guru with cold wa-<lb />ter, either. ItTs Just water, detergent<lb />and. clothes with no picky sorting.)<lb /><lb />For the dryer, clean the filter after<lb />every load. It can be tedious to<lb />clean that little wire thing, but it<lb />will save you money.<lb /><lb />The best way to save money<lb />is to check your house or apart-<lb />ment for energy leaks and places<lb />where heat leaks out (i.e. the re-<lb />frigerator or the air conditioner)<lb /><lb />and take care of them. Just up-<lb /><lb />dating your window seals could<lb /><lb />save you a lot. If these items still _<lb /><lb />bother you, Just go to the electric<lb />company and ask them how you<lb /><lb />-can lower your bill. They're not<lb /><lb />really evil people, they'll give you<lb />a nice little handout that breaks<lb />down exactly how much money<lb />running certain appliances can<lb />cost per hour. TheyTll tell you<lb />this ultimately: Anything that<lb />heats or cools will hurt you.<lb /><lb />The electric bill is probably<lb />the one thing that can ruin your<lb />month if itTs too high. Nothing<lb />makes a person shiver like open-<lb />ing that envelope and seeing those<lb />high digits. However, if you're<lb />smart with your electric usage,<lb />and you can be content in one<lb />steady temperature, you should<lb />never go bankrupt.<lb /><lb />THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 2007<lb /><lb />OPEN 24 hours Fridays &amp; Saturdays<lb /><lb />COLLEGE NIGHT<lb /><lb />EVERY TUESDAY &amp; THURSDAY<lb /><lb />50% OFF ENTREES |<lb /><lb />Limited<lb /><lb />Availability!<lb /><lb />Worlds<lb /><lb />Located in the heart of<lb />ECUTs campus, the n<lb />Campus Towers offers<lb />todayTs students the<lb />perfect blend of location,<lb />style &amp; convenience.<lb /><lb />With a cutting-edge<lb />computer lab, a game<lb />room, TV lounges and<lb /><lb />new laundry facilities,<lb />Campus Towers offers<lb />all the conveniences of<lb />on-campus living with<lb />the upscale amenities of<lb />apartment life.<lb /><lb />Forget the early morning<lb />commute. One<lb />person may need to adjust how<lb />early or late they dry their hair<lb />while the other may need to<lb />monitor how loud they watch<lb /><lb />P.O. Box 2039<lb /><lb />Open communication between roommates plays can help work out<lb /><lb />Greenville, NC 27836<lb /><lb />the television when their toom-T<lb /><lb />mate is studying. Talk to your<lb />roommate(s) about their sched-<lb />ules and be aware of their needs in<lb /><lb />"regards to studying. Roommates<lb /><lb />typically have to share a small<lb />amount of space for their belong-<lb />ings and figuring out what goes<lb />where and who gets what space<lb />is easier to do up front, instead of<lb />weeks or months after moving in.<lb /><lb />Decide which spaces and chores _<lb />each roommate is responsible for .<lb /><lb />and then stick to it.<lb /><lb />Privacy also becomes an issue.<lb />Whether living in a residence<lb />hall, an apartment or a house,<lb />learning to respect privacy and<lb />personal space is important.<lb /><lb />Roommates can become obest<lb />friends forever? in a matter of<lb />days-or they could become each<lb />otherTs worst enemies. Sometimes<lb />both situations can occur. A tri-<lb />umphant roommate relationship<lb />is based on open communication<lb />and thoughtfulness. If your room-<lb />mate is bugging you, the only way<lb />they will know is if you tell them.<lb /><lb />Try setting some kind of schedule | ~<lb /><lb />if the two of you really cannot<lb />get along. Set aside time for both<lb />of you to be in the room alone,<lb />without your roommate bother-<lb />ing you. Schedule quiet time and<lb />try to do something together,<lb />outside of the room, once a week.<lb />This may help to strengthen your<lb />relationship inside the room and<lb />realize that the other person may<lb />actually be human.<lb /><lb />Living with someone new can<lb />be challenging but it can also be<lb />fun so long as people have open<lb />minds and honest hearts.<lb /><lb />*<lb /><lb />= Making your home our priority!<lb /><lb />Location convenient to<lb />ECU and the hospital.<lb /><lb />www.KeystonePropertyMgt.com<lb />308 SE Greenville Blvd. Suite 2-B<lb /><lb />1<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />252.355.8884<lb /><lb />¢ Allenton Estates * English Village ¢ Park West<lb /><lb />* Cannon Court * Fox Hollow ¢ Peony<lb /><lb />* Cedar Court ¢ Gladious/Jasmine ¢ South Haven<lb /><lb />¢ Cedar Creek ¢ Holly Glen ¢ Summerfield<lb /><lb />* College Park ¢ Medical Center ¢ Tree Tops Villas<lb /><lb />¢ Cotanche Street * Monticello Court I/I ¢ Wellingham<lb /><lb />° Cypress Gafflens * Moss Creek *** Washer/Dryer Sets<lb /><lb />e Eastgate ¢ Paladin West .
