Slater said.<lb /><lb />All three encouraged prospec-<lb />tive sports writers to broaden their<lb />skills beyond just writing articles.<lb /><lb />UNC tuition rate increases up<lb /><lb />(AP)"The University of<lb />North Carolina approved tuition<lb />and fee increases of as much as<lb />nearly 10 percent Friday for in-<lb />state students on its 16 campuses.<lb /><lb />Leaders of the state system<lb /><lb />state undergraduate tuition<lb />increases to 6.5 percent annually<lb />for the next four years, though<lb />certain debt fees are exempt. Those costs rose 9.5<lb />percent at ECU to $4,181 and<lb />9 percent at Western Carolina<lb />University to $3,950, the high-<lb />est percentage increases of any<lb />schools in the system.<lb /><lb />The UNC Board of Governors<lb />approved hikes of 6.9 percent at<lb />North Carolina State University<lb />to $5,002 and 6.2 percent, to<lb />$5,176, at UNC Chapel Hill.<lb /><lb />Other increases included:<lb />Elizabeth City State, 5.2 per-<lb />cent to $4,184; Appalachian<lb />State, 5.2 percent to $4,184; and<lb />UNC Charlotte, 5.7 percent to $3,978.<lb /><lb />The amounts donTt include<lb /><lb />Teel, Perez and Slater talk with students about their opinions and experiences as sports writers.<lb /><lb />oItTs not a print world anymore.<lb />ItTs a multimedia world,? Slater said he<lb />mailed out between fifty and sixty<lb />intern applications as a senior.<lb /><lb />-oThere are so many more<lb />internships available to get your<lb />name out there and develop a repu-<lb /><lb />tation,? Teel said. oYou have to be ©<lb /><lb />patient and you probably have to<lb />be poor for a while.?<lb /><lb />Cindy Elmore, assistant pro-<lb />fessor of communication, said that<lb />Teel had often come to speak to<lb />her classes here at ECU because<lb />they went to college together. This<lb />year she wanted to get a slightly<lb />broader perspective.<lb /><lb />oThe thing I like about having<lb />them is that they emphasize so<lb />many of the skills that we talk<lb />about in class,? said Elmore. oThey<lb />are the same skills that anybody<lb />needs covering the White House<lb />or anything else.?<lb /><lb />, This writer can be contacted at<lb />news@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />to nearly 10 percent approved<lb /><lb />costs for room and board, books _<lb /><lb />and other expenses.<lb /><lb />The board also approved an -<lb /><lb />increase of $1,250 for out-of-<lb /><lb />state students at UNC-Chapel ©<lb /><lb />Hill, where non-state residents<lb />will pay $20,824 in the 2007-<lb />08 school year, the most in the<lb />system for nonresidents.<lb /><lb />The tuition cap doesnTt apply<lb />to debt service fees, which cover<lb />costs such as new building con-<lb />struction financed by the campus.<lb /><lb />Debt service fees ranged<lb />from $81 at North Carolina<lb />Central University to $452 at<lb />UNC-Wilmington, where the<lb /><lb />total tuition and fee bill rose 5.7<lb /><lb />-percent to $4,312.<lb />The board, which usually :<lb /><lb />meets.in Chapel Hill, met Friday<lb />on the campus of N.C. (AP)"A political<lb />foe of Durham County District At-<lb />torney Mike Nifong is challenging<lb />the authority of a judge to delay her<lb />request to remove the former Duke<lb />lacrosse prosecutor from office.<lb /><lb />On Friday, Durham resident Beth<lb />Brewer filed an affidavit accusing<lb />Nifong of committing owillful mis-<lb />conduct in office.?<lb /><lb />But Durham Superior Court Judge<lb />Orlando Hudson said that complaint<lb />largely mirrors one filed by the North<lb />Carolina State Bar, which accuses<lb />Nifong of breaking several rules of<lb />professional conduct. Hudson is-<lb />sued an order Monday that defers<lb />BrewerTs complaint until NifongTs<lb />ethics trial before the bar is resolved.<lb />The bar has accused Nifong of<lb />withholding evidence from lawyers<lb />defending three lacrosse players<lb />charged with sexually assaulting a<lb />stripper, of lying to the court and<lb />to bar investigators, and making<lb />misleading and inflammatory com-<lb />ments about the players.<lb /><lb />Brewer argued in court papers filed<lb />Monday that state law requires Hud-<lb /><lb />son to act within 30 days on her<lb />complaint. Hudson said acting on<lb />the charges could include his deci-<lb />sion to delay hearing them.<lb /><lb />Last year, Brewer ran the Committee<lb />to Recall Nifong, an effort to keep<lb />the veteran prosecutor from winning<lb />his first full term as district attorney.<lb />In an interview with the AP, Nifong<lb />called BrewerTs affidavit politically<lb />motivated.<lb /><lb />oObviously the person who filed this<lb />affidavit is someone who tried un-<lb />successfully to defeat me in the po-<lb />litical process,? Nifong said Friday.<lb />oNow that the voters have chosen<lb />someone other than who she want-<lb />ed, sheTs trying to remove me from<lb />office in this manner.?<lb /><lb />DATA continued from Al<lb /><lb />cardholder was personally con-<lb />tacted to prevent any illegal misuse<lb />of their account information.<lb /><lb />ECU officials are working to<lb />inform everyone about this event.<lb /><lb />Since Friday, 65,000 letters<lb />have been mailed out informing<lb />the public of this occurrence.<lb /><lb />John Durham, chief public<lb />affairs officer for ECU, said that<lb />although an e-mail alert was sent<lb />to faculty members, students did<lb />not receive notification of the secu-<lb />rity breach via their PirateMail<lb />accounts at the same time because<lb />students have disregarded alert<lb />e-mails in the past.<lb /><lb />So far, ECU officials say they have<lb />spent in the tens of thousands of dol-<lb />lars making all necessary arrange-<lb />ments to turn this mistake around.<lb /><lb />Many students seem to share<lb />the opinion that they would have<lb />liked to have known about this<lb />event sooner to ensure their per-<lb />sonal safety was not at risk.<lb /><lb />oT didnTt realize there had been |<lb /><lb />an info breech, and I didnTt know it<lb />was that easy to get into one stop<lb />and bypass signing in. <lb />Opinion.<lb /><lb />Are pills really<lb />the-cure<lb /><lb />An opinion on our pill-popping nation<lb /><lb />ALEX LAROCCA<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />At least half of.my friends take medication<lb />either for depression or ADD/ADHD. Another<lb />half abuses those same pills in order to achieve<lb />a high. A large part of my family is on medica-<lb /><lb />tion and if genetics and hereditary disorders play .<lb /><lb />any role, one day I will be on medication as well.<lb /><lb />How can any of this be right? When I talk to<lb />these people about when they were odiagnosed,? I<lb />donTt seem to understand what their parents and/or<lb />their doctors realized. I have made it a point of<lb />my life to avoid ever taking medication for mental<lb />health because I know that I can solve all of my<lb />problems just as all of humanity did before the<lb /><lb />invention of drugs like Paxil, Adderall and Zantrex.<lb />I have noticed the heavy increase over the 3<lb /><lb />past decade of prescription medicine. I was lucky<lb />enough to never have been taken to a psychi-<lb />atrist and been odiagnosed? with ADD as a<lb />child and so I have never been put on any medi-<lb />cations for possible mental health problems.<lb /><lb />Yet, for some reason, everyone around me man-<lb />aged to develop attention disorders or depression<lb />before they were even 18 years old. How did people<lb />manage for the past 6,000 years of humanity then?<lb />Were they just mentally defected and nowadays,<lb />we are able to have the cure for such illness? No!<lb />Depression, Bipolar disorder, ADD/ADHD are all<lb />disorders that, somehow, over the past two decades<lb />have been completely taken out of context. How<lb />could there be such an increase without anything<lb />actually happening to change our mental status?<lb /><lb />The truth of the matter is not that we have<lb />changed, our society has. When I say our soci-<lb />ety, I mean America. My girlfriendTs best friend<lb />was recently diagnosed with bipolar disorder...<lb />over the phone. Not only that, she was even pre-<lb />scribed the medication over the phone. What?!<lb /><lb />Another friend has Agoraphobia, but she lives in<lb />Switzerland. Agoraphobia is a fear of going outside<lb />and those who are agoraphobic only feel comfortable<lb />in familiar settings with familiar people. Anything<lb />beyond staying home can cause them overwhelm-<lb />ing anxiety. My friend was taken to a doctor who<lb />decided to monitor her for an entire year, after which<lb />he decided to prescribe her medication for her dis-<lb />order. Today she is planning to go to school again<lb />and has even come out of the closet. The difference<lb />between this and our country is that her medication<lb />is being used as a crutch not as the solution. This is<lb />the problem with how medication is being prescribed<lb />today. She has stated she does not plan to stay on the<lb />medication; it is merely being used as a reminder of<lb />what.a stable mind is. Medication for depression and<lb />ADD/ADHD is supposed to be treated as a crutch<lb />and not as a solution for the rest, of a personTs life.<lb /><lb />An even bigger problem beyond how these pills<lb />are being used is why they are being prescribed.<lb />There is a big difference between someone who is<lb />sad and someone who is depressed, just as there<lb />is a big difference between the way a 12-year-old<lb />acts and the way a person with ADD/ADHD<lb />acts. Yet these distinctions have basically been<lb />abolished and anyone who is feeling odown? or<lb />odistracted? can be given these medications.<lb /><lb />Lest we forget, depression has been<lb />a factor in the creativity of artists like Van<lb />Gogh and if Edgar Allan Poe had been put on<lb />Zantrex, as he might have been today, I some-<lb />how doubt that we would have the same poetry.<lb /><lb />If current doctors were diagnosing children of<lb />the past, then'I am sure that Albert Einstein would<lb />have been put on Adderall and Voltaire or Paxil.<lb /><lb />Sadness is a part of life just as much as happiness<lb />is. Concentration is a discipline that one is taught.<lb />We have begun to take away human problems and<lb />human emotion with magical pills that increase<lb />oneTs abilities but take away oneTs experiences.<lb /><lb />Problems with<lb /><lb />pacifism<lb /><lb />A world without war isnTt necessarily<lb />a better one<lb /><lb />KRYSTLE STRICKLIN<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />There is no argument against the fact that war is<lb />a tremendous evil. No reasonably just person would<lb />ever look at war as a good thing for humanity. There-<lb />fore, for pacifists it seems quite logical. If war rep-<lb />resents such terrible atrocities, it should be avoided<lb />completely and without exception. Unfortunately, this<lb />concept has about the same amount of reality as time<lb />traveling or man being able to fly without wings. I<lb />will be the first to admit that nothing is impossible,<lb />but only a fool would deny the fact that certain<lb />things are highly improbable. Peace is undoubt-<lb />edly desirable, but sadly, it is not always feasible.<lb /><lb />The entire concept of world peace assumes that<lb />there is a ocure? for the wretchedness of this world,<lb />the ocure? being the absolute aversion of all violent<lb />actions. The problem with this is the impracticality<lb />of the idea. It/is naive to assume that there is any-<lb />thing we can do to eliminate suffering completely.<lb /><lb />If history has shown us anything, it is that<lb />evil will always exist. Eliminating all options<lb />except for peace would leave a country severely<lb />handicapped to deal with world affairs: Pacifist<lb />actions are ineffective against an enemy who has<lb />no desire for peace. One of the requirements for<lb />justice is-having the power to enforce justice when<lb />necessary. To not /be able or willing to commit to<lb />the defense of justice will only enable its defeat.<lb /><lb />War is a terrible thing, but it is not the worst.<lb />A country with a diminished state of moral and<lb />patriotic feeling is a greater tragedy than any war.<lb />Someone who believes that there is nothing in life<lb />worth fighting for is surely faced with a miserable<lb />existence. A person so decayed in moral conscious-<lb />ness that he would ignore the need for action<lb />against evil has little future in life and will simply<lb />be pushed aside by better men, willing to fight<lb />for justice. The idea of merely wishing for peace<lb />is not honorable for an individual or for a nation.<lb /><lb />{ Your source for sarcasm }<lb /><lb />TUESDAY FEBRUARY 13, 2007<lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />| got hit on the head with an acorn by a<lb />squirrel. | swear he laughed too!<lb /><lb />PAGE A3<lb /><lb />7<lb /><lb />NEWS: ASTRONAUT GRANTED BOND ON ATTEMTED-MURER<lb /><lb />CHARGE... ItTs<lb />going to be annoying (and obviously already is),<lb />but what can you do? Sit this person down and say,<lb /><lb />- oHey! Stop stealing my mojo!? And for all those<lb /><lb />times that this person-wears your style, remind<lb />yourself that it was yours first. Eventually, she'll<lb />tire of being someone's carbon copy or decide you<lb />aren't so cool after all (kidding). When that day<lb />comes, you'll be one happy person, ITm sure. I hope<lb />that.day comes soon for you.<lb /><lb />Don't worry, be happy,<lb />Jane<lb /><lb />Dear Editor,<lb /><lb />This letter is being written in regards to a front<lb />page article which was printed in your newspaper<lb />on Thursday, Feb. 8. The article was regarding the<lb />status of the Gamma Rho chapter of Kappa Alpha<lb />Order. The article was mainly focused on the chapters<lb />grades, amembership review, and hazing allegations.<lb />I would love to address several of these points.<lb /><lb />The chapter grades have been an issue for the past<lb />couple of years in our chapter. Last semester we were<lb />addressed by our national office and put on a strict<lb />probation. The National Administrative Office had a<lb />plan for us to come off of probation if we met certain<lb />criteria which was laid out for us. Under direction of<lb />the president at the time of this probation, the chapter<lb />not only met all of the criteria, but we improved our<lb />overall chapter GPA by great strides. The Gamma<lb />Rho Chapter of Kappa Alpha Order did everything<lb />asked of us and went above and beyond the minimum<lb />GPA requirements presented us. :<lb /><lb />The second issue I'd like to address is the mem-<lb />bership review the article speaks of. Membership<lb />review is basically wheré an outside committee of<lb />alumni sit down with each individual in KA and<lb />decides whether or not the member should be allowed<lb />to be active in the organization based on their per-<lb />formrance in the classroom, in the chapter and in<lb />the community. This is by no means a bad thing.<lb />The article seems to attempt to depict our chapter<lb />as being on in deep trouble. This is not the case.<lb />Our sanctions are simply an attempt to improve the<lb />chapter community relations and the overall grades<lb />of the chapter.<lb /><lb />The last issue I'd like to address in this article is<lb />the brief mention of hazing allegations. At no time<lb />was the Gamma Rho chapter of KA found guilty of<lb />hazing charges. Kappa Alpha Order does not support<lb />hazing, and neither does the Gamma Rho chapter<lb />at ECU. The fact that the article hints at hazing<lb />allegations shows that the purpose of this article<lb />was to show negative aspects of fraternity life. This<lb />is irresponsible on the part of the East Carolinian<lb />considering that these are simply allegations. There<lb />have been several of these allegations in the past, and<lb />each time, upon investigation, the chapter was found<lb />not guilty. As far as ITm concerned, these allegations _<lb />could simply be another fraternity on campus that<lb />needs a house. :<lb /><lb />The article also failed to mention many of the<lb />positive aspects that our chapter has done recently<lb />in the community. Last semester the chapter donated<lb />over $1,000 to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.<lb />The chapter takes part in many community service<lb />projects, such as throwing parties for underprivileged<lb />children from. the Little Willy Center. Your article<lb /><lb />T did not mention a single positive aspect of Greek<lb /><lb />Life. This is something your paper fails to do on a<lb />regular basis.<lb /><lb />Finally, I want to show my disappointment in the<lb />way this article was handled. Why was this article<lb />placed on the front page of the paper? The East<lb />Carolinian has done a poor job of finding relevant<lb />issues on campus to write about. ECU has major<lb />issues regarding crime and parking, just to name a<lb />few. On Wednesday, Feb. 7; Skip Holtz and our ECU<lb />football team signed what was arguably the best<lb />recruiting class in ECU history. Why not make this<lb />the headlining story in the paper. This is great news<lb />which will help us compete on a regular basis with<lb />our hated rivals to the west.<lb /><lb />Instead, The East Carolinian prints an article<lb />attempting to slander the name of a well respected<lb />fraternity not only on our campus, but across our -<lb />country. Why would the East Carolinian publish a<lb />story without doing the proper research and men-<lb />tion false allegations in order to slander the name<lb />of a fraternity and even Greek life. It is well known<lb />throughout Greek life that the East Carolinian has<lb />made several attempts to get fraternities in trouble,<lb />whether it be through rush violations or articles like<lb />this. I encourage our campus newspaper to focus on<lb />the issues on our campus that actually matter and<lb />would make ECU a better place. :<lb /><lb />Matthew Joyce<lb />Senior, Industrial Distribution<lb />Kappa Alpha Order<lb /><lb />Sarah Bell<lb />Editor in Chief<lb />Jenelle Conner Rachel King<lb />News Editor Opinion Editor<lb />Greg Katski Ronnie Woodward<lb />Sports Editor Asst. Make this day (or any<lb />other) about each other, for little<lb />or no money. Whether you are<lb />spending the day with someone<lb />special or simply indulging in<lb />some alone time, staying in is the<lb />perfect remedy for the craziness<lb />that accompanies ValentineTs Day.<lb /><lb />Staying in for a romantic<lb />dinner can be very affordable and<lb />even more special than going out.<lb />With the cold weather, having an<lb />indoor date night is a warm and<lb />inviting way to entertain your date.<lb /><lb />oWe like to cook together, and<lb />play chess because it gives us time<lb />to talk to each other,? said junior<lb />art major Cora Cummings.<lb /><lb />DonTt worry about what to<lb />cook for dinner, prepare some-<lb />thing simple and stress free such<lb />as spaghetti or even sandwiches.<lb />Make it special by lighting can-<lb />dles and using a tablecloth, with<lb />rose petals sprinkled on top for an<lb />added touch. Put on your favorite<lb />CD in the background, and donTt<lb />rush through dinner. Take this<lb />time to get to know each other;<lb />even if you have been together<lb />for days or years, there are surely<lb />things you can discover about<lb />your significant other.<lb /><lb />Alternatively, instead of eating<lb />at the table, spice things up by<lb />having an indoor picnic by putting<lb />a blanket with pillows on the floor.<lb /><lb />oSince itTs so cold: outside,<lb />sometimes we'll put a quilt on the<lb />floor in the living room and have<lb />an indoor picnic,? Cummings said.<lb /><lb />T Finger foods are better in this<lb />situation, so go for pizza, fresh<lb />fruit or chicken wraps. You can<lb />put the plates, napkins and dinner<lb />in a basket to really make it feel<lb />like a picnic, and be sure to bring<lb />your dateTs favorite beer, wine or<lb />soda to complete the meal.<lb /><lb />Even if you donTt have a spe-<lb />cial ValentineTs date, an evening<lb />with friends can be a fun way to<lb />spend time with the people you<lb />love. Hosting dinner and a movie<lb />night at your place is a great way<lb />to bring all your friends together,<lb /><lb />Photos.com<lb /><lb />k<lb /><lb />Valentines spend a night at home rather than braving the crowds.<lb /><lb />no matter what day it is.<lb /><lb />oMy boyfriend and I usually<lb />play board games with a big<lb />group of friends on the week-<lb />ends, or have dinner and watch<lb />a movie,? said junior sociology<lb />major Courtney Wall.<lb /><lb />The most important thing<lb />to remember is to keep your date<lb />night stress free. A great way to do<lb />this is to cook your meal together.<lb />This avoids the stress involved<lb />with finishing everything before<lb />your date arrives, and is also a lot of<lb />fun. Keep the recipe affordable and<lb />something that you are comfort-<lb />able with making. If you are not<lb />one to cook, donTt shy away from<lb />your easy favorites such as scram-<lb />bled eggs and toast. This is one<lb />case where it is the thought that<lb />really counts.<lb /><lb />A simple dinner can lead the<lb />way to a decadent dessert that<lb />will steal the spotlight. Chocolate<lb />covered strawberries or. other<lb /><lb />fruit is a dessert that everyone<lb />will love.
