Dave<lb />Upthegrove (D-Des Moines)<lb />will aim at providing student<lb />journalists the same freedoms<lb />as professionals.<lb /><lb />According to the Student<lb />Press Law Center Web site,<lb />Brian: Schraum, a Washington<lb />State University student, played<lb />a role in the proposal of the<lb />bill. He sought to prevent what<lb />was recently decided for young<lb />journalists in Illinois, Indiana<lb />and Wisconsin from happening at<lb />his own university, WSU.<lb /><lb />In the 2005 Hosty vs. Carter<lb />ruling by the seventh U.S. Dis-<lb />trict Court of Appeals in Chicago,<lb />a bill was passed which permit-<lb />ted administrators at Midwest<lb />universities to review student<lb />articles before publication.<lb />Although the ruling did not affect<lb />schools in the state of Washing-<lb />ton, Schraum recognized that<lb />students needed a greater<lb />guarantee of protection<lb />from censorship.<lb /><lb />California made a similar<lb />move after the Hosty ruling,<lb />and is on the same page as five<lb />other states"Massachusetts,<lb />Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas and<lb />Iowa. All have passed laws to<lb />prevent school officials from<lb />reviewing publication prior to print.<lb /><lb />ECU professor Bill Loving,<lb />who teaches Media Law..and<lb /><lb />Contributed Image<lb /><lb />fe<lb />S<lb />=<lb /><lb />A high school journalist holds up a proo e page for her schoolTs student newspaper. Student jo<lb /><lb />urnalistsT fre<lb /><lb />edom of expression will be protected in Washington<lb /><lb />just like those of professional journalists if a bill passes in the Washington state House of Representatives Rules Committee.<lb /><lb />First Amendment Law,<lb />sees the bill as a standard model<lb />set forth by past hearings<lb />involving the issue of censorship<lb />by school officials upon student-<lb />based publications.<lb /><lb />oStudents will be practicing<lb />their craft under the same rules<lb />as professionals in the world after<lb />graduation,? said Loving. oStu-<lb />dent journalists interview, write,<lb /><lb />they edit and take pictures, just<lb /><lb />like practitioners. They follow<lb />the same standards, use the same<lb />set of codes and they ought to<lb />be protected by the same rules<lb />and laws.?<lb /><lb />Although Loving recognizes<lb />the need for young journal-<lb />ists to have this kind of pro-<lb />tection, he also agrees that<lb />sometimes having the help of<lb />administrators and media advi-<lb />sors can be beneficial in order<lb /><lb />Professor Mani signs books for former students while promoting her recent publication about female activists.<lb /><lb />for students to realize the<lb />responsibility that comes with<lb />their work.<lb /><lb />oMost school officials ITve<lb />met in my years of teaching<lb />and in professional journalism,<lb />genuinely want what is best.<lb />Having a statute that lays out<lb />rules for student journalists<lb />will help them take away a lot of<lb />uncertainties that sometimes lead<lb />to bad results.?<lb /><lb />Book highlights<lb />womenTs contributions<lb />to politics<lb /><lb />GENERRA CORNWELL<lb />STAFF WRITER.<lb /><lb />ECU professor Bonnie Mani<lb />recently published her book titled,<lb />Women, Power, and Political Change.<lb />The work includes biographies of<lb />many historic women and their<lb />contributions to politics.<lb /><lb />The women featured in the<lb />book played major roles in not just<lb />politics but also society.<lb /><lb />Angelina Weld, who helped<lb />freed men after the Civil War and<lb />served as the Vice President of<lb />Massachusetts Woman Suffrage<lb />Association, is featured in the<lb />book, as well as Lucretia Mott,<lb />whose home was a stop on the<lb />Underground Railroad.<lb /><lb />Hillary Clinton is featured for<lb /><lb />her role as a U.S. Senator, candi-<lb /><lb />dacy in the 2008 presidential elec-<lb /><lb />tion and her partnership in Rose<lb /><lb />Law Firm in Arkansas.<lb /><lb />Elizabeth Dole is also featured<lb />for her work as head of Federal<lb />Trade Commission for a six-year<lb />term, and holding the positions of<lb />Secretary of Department of Trans-<lb />portation, President of American<lb />Red Cross and U.S. Senator.<lb /><lb />When Mani was asked how<lb />essential education was to these<lb />womenTs career she responded,<lb /><lb />Pell Grant could see increase, pending<lb /><lb />Low income students<lb />benefit from grant<lb /><lb />ALYCIA WENDT<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />Low-income students who<lb />are in need of grants may be<lb />receiving much, more in the<lb />future. On Jan. 31, a raise for<lb />the Pell Grant was passed by the<lb />House of Representatives. The<lb />action taken by the House of<lb />Representatives, however, will<lb />now have to go before the Senate<lb />for approval.<lb /><lb />The Pell Grant is a grant aid<lb />program that helps more than<lb />five million low-income students.<lb /><lb />According to Rose Stelma, assis-<lb />tant vice chancellor and director<lb />of Student Financial Aid, the Pell<lb />Grant helps about 5,000 students<lb />from ECU.<lb /><lb />oI believe that it is impor-<lb />tant for the Federal Pell Grant<lb />and funding for all need-based<lb />financial aid programs in<lb />general, to increase. Federal<lb />student financial. aid programs<lb />began with the idea that stu-<lb />dents should be able to access<lb />higher education regardless of<lb />their financial circumstances,?<lb />said Stelma.<lb /><lb />The grant has not been raised<lb />for the past four years. The Pell<lb />Grant has been $4,050 but could<lb />now rise to $4,310 pending<lb /><lb />approval by the Senate. There is<lb />also a plan to increase the grant<lb />even more for the 2008 fiscal year<lb />to $4,600.<lb /><lb />oI think its exciting that<lb /><lb />Congress decided, in a tight .<lb /><lb />budget context, to vote and prior-<lb />itize the Pell Grant, which is long<lb />overdue,? said Luke Swarthout, a<lb />highér-education advocate for the<lb />North Carolina Public Interest<lb />Research Group federal office.<lb /><lb />-Tuition has been increasing<lb />each year and students have still<lb />been receiving the same amount<lb />of money for the grant.<lb /><lb />oI think that if they raise the<lb />price of tuition they should also<lb />raise the amount of the grant to<lb />help the students who are depen-<lb /><lb />dant on it. If the price of tuition<lb />raises and the grant doesnTt, then<lb />the students will just have to<lb />work harder to pay it off,? said<lb />freshman Kirsten Wilkins.<lb /><lb />The Pell Grant does not have<lb />to be repaid, unlike a loan. The<lb />grants are usually awarded to<lb />undergraduate students who do<lb />not have a bachelorTs or profes-<lb />sional degree. <lb />Opin<lb /><lb />I read the<lb /><lb />lon<lb /><lb />WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 7, 2007<lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />| love wearing big sunglasses and<lb />carrying coffee to my 8 a.m. class...<lb />| feel like a celebrity with a hangover.<lb /><lb />pace A3<lb /><lb />{ 100 percent pure }<lb /><lb />Pirate Rants<lb />first<lb /><lb />For all of those who think:<lb />weTre idiots<lb /><lb />MARGOT ROGERSON<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />I read the Pirate Rants first because I enjoy<lb />a good laugh, not because I am an idiot. There<lb />is absolutely nothing wrong with flipping the<lb />pages of the paper over and reading the ludicrous<lb />and often absurd Rants before glancing over the<lb /><lb />rest of the paper. Bottom line"they are funny. bs<lb /><lb />To the nice guy who always finishes last: You won't<lb />always finish last. ItTs just that your niceness goes<lb />unappreciated right now. That is not your fault; itTs just<lb />because we girls donTt truly know what we want yet.<lb /><lb />To the people who cannot ever make it to class:<lb />ItTs not really that hard to get out of bed. Not that<lb />I donTt suffer from the same oITd rather stay in my<lb />bed than walk across campus and sit down for 50-<lb />75 minutes? syndrome as well, but you can do it.<lb /><lb />To all those suffering from oI have the worst<lb />roommate in the world,? ITm sorry. Learning to<lb />be patient and cooperative with others is truly<lb />one of the hardest things in the world to adapt<lb />to. Try to remember their point of view also.<lb />It might not be easy to live with you either.<lb /><lb />For those who start and end a Rant with the<lb />question, oIs this/that bad?? The answer is yes.<lb /><lb />To those who leave crazy and nonsensical<lb />rants about absolutely nothing at all, thank you. I<lb />read them, and I laugh, and I think, oWho in the<lb />world could have written something like that??<lb />Then I realize that there are people out there that<lb />I donTt understand, and never will, and thatTs OK.<lb /><lb />To all those mocking what others find fashion-<lb />able, if you're not wearing it, why does it matter? And<lb />no, I donTt own a pair of Uggs or large sunglasses.<lb /><lb />For all of those in love who wish to share that<lb />with us through Pirate Rants, good for you. It is nice<lb />to have that with someone. However, please make<lb />sure it is love, and not lust or stupid infatuation.<lb /><lb />Finally, to those who Rant about the idiots that only<lb />pick up the paper to read the Pirate Rants, get over it.So<lb />please, everyone, keep Ranting so I can keep smiling.<lb /><lb />This is a response to the article oWZMB back<lb />on air? which appeared inthe Feb. 6 edition of the<lb />East Carolinian.<lb /><lb />College radio stations are the last bastions of the<lb />true art form of radio. Across the nation the only<lb />place you can find an actual on-air disc jockey that<lb />will actually bring you new music, the way new music "<lb />was once transmitted, is a college radio station. Col-<lb />lege radio stations are where you can discover entire<lb />new worlds of music that you never knew of before.<lb />And what is the point of college other than to learn?<lb /><lb />WZMB, in its new state, can no longer serve<lb />the ECU community and I believe it should be shut<lb />down. If I wished to have my music provided for me<lb />by a robot I would listen to 99x or any number of<lb />other massively automated corporate atrocities to<lb />the music community (notice I did not say oindus-<lb />try?). Whenever I tuned in to WMZB it would<lb />be to hear something I had never heard before,<lb />discover a new band that I might like, or at the<lb />very least have an on-air DJ say, oIf you like such-<lb />and-such, then you may like such-and-such.? Since<lb />the station is switching to automation, I cannot<lb />have those things, so therefore I will not listen.<lb /><lb />How can WZMB fix this? First of all they can<lb />return to their former format, which they have<lb />slowly abandoned the last couple of years and now<lb />they have dropped completely. The FCC has claimed<lb />that because of on-air violations that WZMB must<lb />either switch to complete automation or shut down,<lb />but the powers-that-be wonTt say what those vio-<lb />lations are? ITm not convinced. This sounds like<lb />every other commercial radio station that is simply<lb />looking for an avenue to cut costs, and what better<lb />way to do that then eliminate an entire job class<lb />and replace them with a fancy version of iTunes?<lb />Why not publish these alleged FCC violations right<lb />in the East Carolinian? Then perhaps I'll swallow<lb />the pill youTre trying to force down my throat. I<lb />still won't listen, and I will still advocate for your<lb />radio station to go off the air until you can operate<lb />like a real radio station and not some Clear Chan-<lb />nel wannabe, but at least you won't look like liars.<lb /><lb />And why not just tell your staff not to curse on<lb />the air? Why not just fire them if they do? Put a<lb />clause in their contract that they have to pay what-<lb />ever fine the FCC levies on the station for their<lb />misdeed. Or just go off the air and run everything<lb />behind the scenes like Channel 23, the ECU TV<lb />station. ThereTs never anything on there but the<lb />students are constantly working and filming things.<lb /><lb />I understand that the world of radio is chang-<lb />ing. I understand that radio has to compete with<lb />iPods and all sorts of other entertainment media.<lb />But why not show a.little forethought unlike your<lb />corporate contemporaries? What can radio offer an<lb />audience that mp3s cannot? The same thing that<lb />radio has always provided that any musical media<lb />cannot"something new. Put the on-air disc jockeys<lb />back on the air, give them their own shows, and let<lb />them spin the music they want. Hire disc jockeys<lb />that are a little off-kilter, who won't spin ad nausea<lb />and whatever spoon-fed corporate crap that has just<lb />come off the assembly line. If we wanted to listen to<lb />those bands and acts that were listed in the article<lb />in question we would just turn to Mix 101.5, 99x,<lb />or any other number of.commercial radio stations.<lb /><lb />Give us something different WZMB, or donTt<lb />give us anything at all.<lb /><lb />Jae Thomas<lb />Graduate Student<lb />History<lb /><lb />The East Carolinian does not endorse statements made in Pirate Rants. How quickly do we forget .<lb /><lb />the atrocities committed by Saddam Hussein? How<lb />many of these same Americans screamed and yelled<lb />and blamed the President for not acting offensively<lb />before we were attacked on 9/11? We should abso-<lb />lutely stay the course in Iraq. We should be there<lb />until we have established a stable government that is<lb />capable of protecting its citizens and the country that<lb />so many of our soldiers bled to create and protect.<lb />Many say that we should not be in Iraq protect-<lb />ing our own interests. They say that we are there<lb /><lb />for the oil. If that were the case, we would turn the ~<lb /><lb />country into a glass parking lot and drill through<lb />it for the oil. We are there protecting our national<lb />security. You wouldn't walk outside every day and<lb />watch your neighbor build a cannon aimed at your<lb />garage without walking across the street, kicking<lb />down his ono trespassing? sign, destroying his<lb />cannon and kicking his butt. You are protecting<lb />your interests.<lb /><lb />The United States is not in Iraq being a bully. We<lb />took power away from one of the most atrocious mass<lb />murderers and human rights violators that this world<lb /><lb />has ever seen. We are trying to bring peace and sta-<lb />bility to a part of the world that desperately needs it.<lb /><lb />The only proposal the democrats have put forth<lb />is to opull our troops out.? What possible good will<lb />that do? Our troops will come home and Iraq will<lb /><lb />fall to pieces. There is no telling who will take con-.<lb /><lb />trol and there is a solid chance that we will be back<lb />over there in five to 10 years taking care of another<lb />problem that we should have handled now. Speak-<lb />ing of.which, Kim Jung-il in North Korea is. going<lb />to see us leave and not give any credibility to the<lb />United States opolitely asking? him to stop testing<lb />and creating nuclear weapons.<lb /><lb />President Theodore Roosevelt said that, in mat-<lb />ters of foreign policy, the United States should ospeak<lb />softly and carry a big stick.? This applies perfectly<lb />to the Iraq situation.<lb /><lb />Yes, we lost 25 U.S. soldiers on Jan. 20. We are<lb />in a war. A surge in troops will relieve some of the<lb />tremendous amount of pressure that we have put on<lb />our soldiers by sending them into a war zone without<lb />the necessary manpower. We need to provide our<lb />military leaders with as many resources they need to<lb />complete the task. With all the time and blood that<lb />we have invested in Iraq already, we cannot afford<lb />to pull out now with the job half finished. We have<lb />toppled a dictator of the worst kind. Now we need<lb />to finish stabilizing a country in order to protect<lb />American citizens and help bring peace toa Pan:<lb />that has not seen it in generations.<lb /><lb />Do youknow<lb />what youre<lb />eating?<lb /><lb />What factory farmers donTt want you<lb /><lb />to know<lb /><lb />LISA URAM<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />We've all noticed the changes in children today.<lb />They seem to be growing faster and taller with every,<lb />year. By the time most children reach their thirteenth<lb />birthday, they look like they are ready to go off<lb /><lb />to college. Ironically, the transformation in the<lb /><lb />food industry within the past decade or more<lb />might be to blame for more than just changes in<lb />adolescent growth.<lb /><lb />There once was a time when farm animals were<lb />raised on land owned by an independent farmer and<lb />his family. They were free to roam the land as they<lb />pleased, finding their own food in nature and often-<lb />times lived a decent life, until they were of age to be<lb />slaughtered. Even going to the slaughterhouse was<lb />bearable, with the use of anesthetics.<lb /><lb />Unfortunately, the number of small, independent<lb />livestock farming continues to decline in the U.S. and<lb />large-scale, corporate-owned livestock factories are<lb />taking their place.<lb /><lb />Arguments for furthering the industrialization<lb />of livestock production are based on increased profit<lb />and the claim that consumers demand it. If consumer<lb />demand is the reasoning behind this atrocious change<lb />in livestock farming, then we should considerably<lb />rethink what we eat on a day to day basis.<lb /><lb />More than nine billion chickens raised on factory<lb />farms each year are bred and filled with growth hor-<lb />mones that cause them to grow so quickly that their<lb />legs and organs canTt keep up.<lb /><lb />This often causes them to experience heart<lb />attacks, organ failure and crippling leg deformities.<lb />Chickens in the U.S. today are taken to the slaugh-<lb />terhouse at six to seven weeks old.<lb /><lb />The 340 million hens that lay the eggs that we eat<lb />on any given morning are burned at the beak without<lb />painkillers and shoved into tiny cages surrounded by<lb />up to 11 hens at a time. The light in the sheds are<lb />manipulated and hens are often starved for two weeks<lb />at a time to produce more egg-laying cycles.<lb /><lb />After two years of this, they are shipped to the<lb />slaughterhouse where, while they are still alive, their<lb />legs are snapped in two and their throats are cut.<lb />Their bodies are so withered that their flesh can only<lb />be used for animal food or canned diced meat. Some<lb />of this meat is actually used in the National School<lb />Lunch Program in public schools.<lb /><lb />The cattle industry is no different. Cattle are still<lb />branded with hot irons and male calvesT testicles are<lb />ripped from their scrotums, all without anesthetics.<lb />Most cattle travel hundreds of miles to reach the<lb />massive corporate-owned feedlots, where they are<lb />crammed together in their own excrement.<lb /><lb />The manure saturates the air with ammonia,<lb />methane and other noxious chemicals that can give<lb />the cows chronic respiratory problems. The cattle<lb />are fed growth hormones to keep them alive in<lb />harsh conditions and of course, make them reach the<lb />slaughterhouse sooner.<lb /><lb />Unfortunately, chickens and cattle aren't the only<lb />animals that are pumped with growth hormones, _<lb />antibiotics and unnatural diets filled with corn silage<lb />(corn with chopped up corn plants).<lb /><lb />Cows that are used for milking, mother pigs, tur-<lb />keys and fish are all subject to this horrible lifestyle.<lb />Therefore, the public is subject to uncertainty every<lb />time we open our mouths to eat.<lb /><lb />What can we do to change what we consume<lb />in our diets? Today more than ever, it is extremely<lb />important to read labels and know where the food<lb />that you consume comes from.<lb /><lb />Although organicfood is more expensive, you are<lb />paying for the innate right to know how and with<lb />what means your food is being produced. It is time<lb />that we take responsibility for what we put into our<lb /><lb />bodies and demand a change. Therefore ITve<lb />hated Duke since before I under-<lb />stood the concept of hate.<lb /><lb />I hate Duke like cats hate<lb />baths, like elephants hate mice,<lb />like Indiana Jones hates snakes<lb />and like you hate your 8 a.m.<lb />class, except worse and with<lb />a passion.<lb /><lb />Duke represents all that is<lb />wrong with the world and it has<lb />nothing to do with their demonic<lb />mascot. Nixon went to law school<lb />at Duke (where he learned how<lb />not to be a crook), Donald Trump<lb />roots for Duke and former players<lb />Christian Laettner, Bobby Hurley,<lb />and J.J. Redick are the personifi-<lb />cation of preppy elitist arrogance.<lb />Like I said, ITm biased.<lb /><lb />ItTs hard to explain how<lb />important the Carolina vs.<lb />Duke basketball games are in<lb />the Durham-Chapel Hill area.<lb /><lb />Some will argue that the Red<lb /><lb />Sox-Yankees or Michigan-Ohio<lb />State are bigger. rivalries, but<lb />its Duke and CarolinaTs proxim-<lb />ity to each other that makes it<lb />so heated. :<lb /><lb />I recall one game day in<lb />middle school when I walked past<lb />the principalTs office to find two<lb />of my friends hanging their heads<lb />in shame. Their clothes and faces<lb />were coated with a mixture of dirt<lb />and blood.<lb /><lb />oWhat did yTall do?? I asked.<lb /><lb />oGot into a fight,? they said -<lb /><lb />in unison.<lb /><lb />oOver what??<lb /><lb />oCarolina and Duke.?<lb /><lb />That totally justified it to me;<lb />it did not seem out of the ordinary<lb />at all. The day after a Carolina<lb />loss to Duke was the worst day of<lb />the school year because it meant<lb />I had to endure the endless bar-<lb />rage of torment from the Dookies.<lb />Even the ones who didnTt know a<lb />lot about basketball would come<lb />out of the woodwork and pile the<lb />abuse on my fellow Tar Heel fans<lb />and me. :<lb /><lb />TonightTs game between<lb />Carolina and Duke is odd because<lb />both teams are coming off losses,<lb />in DukeTs case, back-to-back<lb />losses. On paper the Tar Heels are<lb />deeper, more athletic and bigger<lb />than theT Blue Devils. However,<lb />the game isnTt played on paper.<lb />There are countless examples<lb /><lb />of overmatched underdog teams<lb />bringing the game down to the<lb />last possession and sometimes<lb />even stealing victory from their<lb />favored nemesis.<lb /><lb />The Tar Heels have been led<lb />this season by a core of young<lb />players. Sophomore Tyler Hans-<lb />brough is an All-American and<lb />Player of the Year Candidate.<lb /><lb />Freshman Brandan Wright has<lb /><lb />complimented Hansbrough in<lb /><lb />the paint, and is a top prospect °<lb /><lb />for the NBA.<lb /><lb />Freshman point guard Tywon<lb />Lawson has emerged as a powder<lb />keg of a point guard, looking<lb />like a quicker and more physi-<lb />cal Raymond Felton. Those are<lb />only three of the 12 Tar Heels<lb />that will see action tonight; they<lb />also have senior leader Reyshawn<lb />Terry, freshman sharpshooter<lb />Wayne Ellington and versatile<lb />wings Danny Green and Marcus<lb />Ginyard.<lb /><lb />Before the loss to N.C. State,<lb />the Tar Heels had looked invinci-<lb />ble during a five game win streak<lb />in which they won convincingly<lb />on the road against ranked oppo-<lb />nents Clemson and Arizona. The<lb />Wolfpack forced the Heels to play<lb />a half court game, instead of the<lb />transition game they prefer.<lb /><lb />If N.C. State and Head Coach<lb />Sidney Lowe can put the brakes<lb />on the Tar Heels high speed<lb />attack then surely coach K and<lb />Duke, who is one of the best<lb />defensive teams in the country,<lb />is capable of doing the same. In<lb />addition, Duke has the home-<lb />court advantage which means<lb />that the Cameron Crazies will<lb />be at their loudest and most<lb />obnoxious.<lb /><lb />I predict that it will be a<lb />tight contest throughout, with<lb />the Tar Heels pulling away late<lb />in the second half. Greg Paulus and DeMar-<lb />cus Nelson will need to be at the<lb />top of their game by scoring in<lb />double figures and feeding the<lb />ball down low to McRoberts, if<lb />the Blue Devils want a chance to<lb />win at home.<lb /><lb />The first game ever played<lb />between North Carolina<lb />and Duke, known as Trinity<lb />College until 1924, took place<lb />Jan. 24, 1920. UNC won their<lb />first meeting 36-25. UNC<lb />leads the all-time series with<lb />Duke, 125-96. ;<lb /><lb />The Blue Devils have won 16<lb />of the last 20 games in the series<lb />against their in-state rivals.<lb /><lb />For the last 122 meetings at<lb />least one of the two schools has<lb />been ranked in the AP Top 20 or<lb />AP Top 25.<lb /><lb />The last time UNC and Duke<lb />met when neither team was<lb />ranked by the Associated Press<lb />was on Feb. 27, 1960. Frank<lb />McGuire and Vic Bubas coached<lb />the Tar Heels and Blue Devils,<lb />respectively, at the time.<lb /><lb />Tip-off for the rivalry begins<lb />at 9 p.m. on ESPN and should<lb />prove to be a very interesting<lb />ACC. UNC and Duke will meet<lb />again March 4 at the Dean Dome<lb />for UNCTs senior night.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb /></p>
