W.<lb />oDuke Jones, chiefexecutive officer of<lb />OffCampus Partners, and witnessed<lb />by students and members of SGA.<lb />Off-Campus Partners is, as their<lb />Web site states, oa partner with<lb />universities to make the off-campus<lb />housing market more efficient.<lb />Our products and services bring<lb />Students, property.managers, and<lb />universities together to improve the<lb />process for everyone involved.<lb />Justin Gross, assistant director<lb /><lb />Members of SGA witness the signing of a contract between ECUTs Dr. Marilyn Sheerer, and Off-Campus PartnersT J.W. oDuke Jones.<lb /><lb />at the Center for OffCampus and<lb />Community Living, said the database<lb />service was acquired to make the pro-<lb />cess of finding off campus housing<lb />easier and more educational for both<lb />in-state and out-of-state students.<lb /><lb />oOn a regular basis [students] do<lb />not or cannot find adequate means to<lb />get a well-rounded perspective on all<lb />the off-campus housing available to<lb /><lb />. them. They get word of mouth...<lb /><lb />go and compare... but with over<lb />100 different apartment complexes<lb />in Greenville, we think this is a<lb />great resource for students to take<lb />advantage of, said Gross.<lb /><lb />oEspecially. students from, out of<lb />state, he added.<lb /><lb />Gross said that although search-<lb />ing for houses for rent, rather than<lb /><lb />to students online<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />apartments, was not the primary<lb />purpose of the database, he hoped<lb />property owners would utilize the<lb />service as well.<lb /><lb />oThe more property owners<lb />we can get on there the better it is<lb />going to be, especially since so many<lb />students take advantage of living in<lb />the neighborhoods near campus,<lb />Gross said.<lb /><lb />In addition to searching for<lb />housing, the online service will<lb />provide educational information on<lb />off-campus living, such as Greenville<lb />City Ordinances.<lb /><lb />oOne of the conditions we're<lb />working on with the vendors is that<lb /><lb />see HOUSING page A2<lb /><lb />Churches welcome community-rebuilding efforts<lb /><lb />Campus Ministries is planning to<lb />collect items for Memorial Baptist<lb />ChurchTs food pantry.<lb /><lb />Campus Ministries work<lb />together to help<lb /><lb />CARMIN BLACK<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />Suspected arson fires that broke<lb /><lb />out almost two weeks ago left one~,<lb /><lb />church demolished and the other<lb />scrambling to make repairs. Now<lb />both churches are working to<lb /><lb />rebuild what they have lost.<lb /><lb />For the past two weeks the<lb />Greenville police department has<lb />been working tirelessly to piece<lb />together the whyTs and howTs of<lb />the Memorial Baptist Church and<lb />the Unity Free Will Baptist<lb />Church Fires.<lb /><lb />Both fires occurred late at night<lb /><lb />ECU Board<lb /><lb />Final decision to be<lb />made this spring<lb /><lb />ELISA BIZZOTTO<lb />SENIOR STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />Last month, the ECU Board<lb />of Trustees approved a 5.6 percent<lb />increase in tuition and fees at their<lb />Dec. 15 meeting, following a decision<lb />made last October by the UNC Board<lb />of Governors capping tuition and fee<lb />increases for the individual UNC<lb />system campuses at 6.5 percent.<lb /><lb />oThe 6.5 percent cap allowed for<lb />a maximum tuition and fee increase<lb /><lb />on Jan. 13. Each church has suffered<lb />tremendous loss from severe fire<lb />and water damage. In fact, Memo-<lb />rial Baptist has calculated at least<lb />$1 million in damages. Unity Free<lb />Will Baptist Church suffered $50<lb />thousand inTfire damage.<lb /><lb />However, church financing is<lb />not the only area that has been<lb />heavily impacted by<lb /><lb />cially with the leaders and members<lb />of Memorial Baptist, as he feels they<lb />have suffered a much greater loss<lb />than his church.<lb /><lb />oThey have more need than we<lb />have. If people want to help us out<lb />we won't deny them the blessing of<lb />giving, but if there is more effort,<lb /><lb />_then go to Memorial, said Manning.<lb /><lb />Selfless acts of kind-<lb /><lb />this tragedy. Mon-<lb />etary losses aside,<lb />this incident seems<lb />to have made an<lb />even deeper impact<lb />on the congrega-<lb />tion members and<lb />attendees who are<lb />Just now becoming<lb />able to deal with<lb />the reality that<lb />anyone would want<lb />to harm their place<lb />T of worship.<lb /><lb />oThe thing<lb />for me was I have<lb />only been actively<lb />involved there for six months<lb />or so, so when it happened it took<lb />a place of my heart away, and I<lb />canTt imagine someone who has<lb />been at that church their whole<lb />life. It has to be hard for them to<lb />know what to do next,T said Gwen<lb />Morris, president of Baptist Campus<lb />Ministries and regular attendee<lb />of Memorial Baptist Church.<lb /><lb />Figuring out what to do next<lb />is now the biggest concern of each<lb />church. Unity Free Will Baptist<lb />oMinister Jeff Manning has made<lb />a point to let the community know<lb />that his thoughts and prayers are<lb />with his congregation, but espe-<lb /><lb />ness have been displayed<lb />all over the Greenville<lb />community in response<lb />to the fires.<lb /><lb />oTTve appreciated<lb />churches and organiza-<lb />tions in our community who have<lb />called and told us they were pray-<lb />ing for us. This has brought the<lb />community together. What was<lb />meant for bad, God has used for<lb />good, said Randy McKinney,<lb />pastor at Memorial Baptist Church.<lb />Many members feel it is this<lb />type of positive attitude that is<lb />needed to make a speedy recovery<lb />from the fire incidents.<lb /><lb />And in response to both<lb />churchesT willingness to receive<lb />help, organizations here at ECU<lb />are on the forefront of finding<lb />opportunities to lend a helping hand.<lb />Many groups are meeting weekly<lb /><lb />to try to come up with fundraising<lb />ideas to help the churches, especially<lb />Memorial Baptist. Various campus<lb />groups are willing to get involved<lb />to raise whatever funds the churches<lb />need to get back on their feet.<lb /><lb />oWe are certainly open to<lb />campus ministries and differ-<lb />ent groups. putting fundraisers<lb />together to help raise money...<lb />the ECU athletic department has<lb />offered physical labor,T said McK-<lb />inney.<lb /><lb />oWe have talked about fund-<lb />raising through a dinner by<lb />cooking and using proceeds from<lb />tickets to fund the churches. Also,<lb />in addition, whoever attends<lb />would bring preschool appropriate<lb />supplies, said Kerri Hefner,<lb />president of the Campus<lb />Ministries Association.<lb /><lb />Hefner also said that as of now<lb />nothing is totally set in stone,<lb />as the members of the Campus<lb />Ministries Association are cur-<lb />rently working to better educate<lb />themselves on the scope of need.<lb /><lb />Currently, Campus Ministries<lb />Association is planning to collect<lb />funds and items for the Memorial<lb />Baptist ChurchTs preschool pro-<lb />gram and food pantry.<lb /><lb />Most groups are waiting<lb />patiently for church insurance<lb />adjusters to finish calculating<lb />all costs for repairs. Once each<lb />church has their figures tallied up,<lb />community volunteers can hit the<lb />ground running and do their part<lb />to overcome this tragedy.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />news@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />of Trustees approves tuition as well as<lb /><lb />for ECU of $236 for the 2007-08<lb /><lb />_ school year, said John Durham,<lb />assistant secretary to the Board of<lb />Trustees.<lb /><lb />oThe ChancellorTs Executive<lb /><lb />Council agreed to split the increase<lb />40 percent tuition and 60 percent fees,<lb />or $96 for tuition and $140 for fees.<lb /><lb />Because of a $21 shift in fees<lb />however, students will only see a $119<lb />increasein theirfeecosts, Durhamsaid.<lb /><lb />The proposal was brought before<lb />the ECU Student Government<lb />Association after its approval by<lb />the ChancellorTs Executive Council.<lb />Following was the approval by SGA<lb />Congress at their Nov. 13 meeting<lb /><lb />when representatives from different<lb />organizations in need of the increase<lb /><lb />in funds introduced their proposals. _<lb /><lb />According to Durham, while the<lb />fee increase required a student vote,<lb />the tuition increase did not.<lb /><lb />The increase in fees will be<lb />applied towards student government<lb />and life, health and recreational ser-<lb />vices, athletics and technology.<lb /><lb />According to ECU Chancellor<lb />Steve Ballard, the increase in tuition<lb />will be applied towards financial aid<lb />and generate close to $1.12 million<lb />for ECU students.<lb /><lb />oLast year, ECU led, hands<lb />down, in the percentage of campus-<lb /><lb />based tuition that went to financial<lb />aid assistance, said Ballard. oAll of<lb />us should be proud of that.<lb /><lb />If the decision is finalized this<lb />March when brought before the<lb />UNC Board of Governors, it will<lb />go into effect in August and will be<lb />applied to costs for the upcoming<lb />academic year. 3<lb /><lb />Michael Marshall, a graduate<lb />student of the Counselor and Adult<lb />Education Program, supports the<lb />decision and said that if the increase<lb />goes into effect, it will not affect<lb />him because he will have graduated<lb />before next fall.<lb /><lb />oAs colleges get better, you would<lb /><lb />Sheerer to<lb />remain as vice<lb /><lb />chancellor for<lb />Student Life<lb /><lb />SHEERER<lb />Interim position filled<lb /><lb />ECU NEWS BUREAU<lb /><lb />Dr. Marilyn Sheerer, a former<lb />dean of the College of Education who<lb />has also held campus-wide leader-<lb />ship roles at ECU, has been named<lb />vice chancellor for Student Life.<lb /><lb />Chancellor Steve Ballard,<lb />announcing the appointment, said,<lb />oMarilyn Sheerer is one of the best<lb />leaders I have known in my higher<lb />education career. She has a long his-<lb />tory of sterling achievements, and<lb />she is admired and respected across<lb />the campus and across the state. She<lb />has boundless energy and enthu-_<lb />siasm, and she knows how to get<lb />things done. She will do a great job.<lb /><lb />Ballard added that Sheerer<lb />received a strong endorse-<lb />ment from student leaders and<lb />enjoys close working relation-<lb />ships with student organizations.<lb /><lb />oChancellor Ballard is real big on<lb />hearing from the students, said M.<lb />Cole Jones, SGA president. oHe con-<lb />tacted me to round up student leaders<lb />to meet and discuss with him about...<lb />pursuing a national search or keep-<lb />ing the current interim [Sheerer].<lb /><lb />Cole went-on. to call Sheerer<lb />oimpressive, outlining her dedica-<lb />tion to students.<lb /><lb />o[SheererT] has been extreme vis-<lb />ible and accessible, so we were excited<lb />to say she was the person for the job.<lb />SheTs here for the students, said Cole.<lb />oOur congress passed a resolution<lb />saying that as the student body we sup-<lb />port the appointment of Dr. Sheerer.<lb /><lb />Sheerer will oversee many non-<lb />academic areas of the university,<lb />including housing and dining, rec-<lb />reation services, the Student Health<lb />Service, the student bus system,<lb />sororities and fraternities, the stu-<lb />dent center, and the campus police<lb />department. In addition, Ballard<lb />said, she will play an important role<lb />in re-energizing ECUTs leadership<lb />programs and expanding service<lb />and engagement opportunities.<lb /><lb />Sheerer said, oI am honored to<lb />be selected for this position. This is<lb />an exciting time to be part of East<lb />Carolina and the staff members in<lb />this division are outstanding. I look<lb />forward to helping enhance studentsT<lb />experiences on our campus.<lb /><lb />Ballard said, oITve worked with<lb />Marilyn for two and a half years on<lb />a variety of problem- solving and<lb />capacity-building opportunities.<lb />ECU is lucky to have her, and J am<lb />delighted that she will continue to be<lb />a member of the university's leader-<lb />ship team. Student Life will be an<lb />innovative organization under her<lb />leadership and she will be a model for<lb />how great leaders work together.<lb /><lb />Sheerer joined ECU as a faculty<lb />member in 1996 and was named dean<lb />of education in 1998. She has been<lb />serving as interim vice chancellor<lb />for Student Life since last summer.<lb /><lb />Sheerer holds a bachelorTs degree<lb />from Bloomsburg State College in<lb />Pennsylvania, a masterTs in student<lb />personnel in higher education from<lb />Syracuse University, and a Ph.D. in<lb />curriculum and supervision from<lb />Ohio University.<lb /><lb />fee increase<lb /><lb />expect there to be an increase in costs<lb />to make it better, said Marshall.<lb /><lb />However, for students who will<lb />be here next year to see the increase,<lb />not all will favor the idea of continu-<lb />ing to pay more money.<lb /><lb />oTm a little annoyed, letTs put it<lb />that way, said Jeff Ogonowski, a grad-<lb />uate student of the Music Education<lb />Program, about the recent approval.<lb /><lb />oI am a Distance Education<lb />student and an on-campus student<lb />so I get hit with both fees. I wanted them to<lb />be guilty. Because really, what could be a better story<lb />than that? Rich white boys rape poor black girl who<lb />is forced to strip to pay for college. You could slap<lb />Harper LeeTs name on a story like that and call it<lb />To Kill A Mockingbird: The College Years. That would<lb />have been a story we could have held under AmericaTs<lb />proverbial nose and said, oSee what happens when<lb />the rich think they can do whatever they want?<lb /><lb />The problem is that this isnTt a trial about the<lb />politics of race and class. Or at least, it shouldnTt<lb />be. It should be about whether or not someone was<lb />raped. And right now, itTs starting to look like maybe<lb />someone wasnTt raped. But because the public, myself<lb />included, clouded the issue, it has become knotted<lb />in an entanglement of race, class and gender issues.<lb /><lb />Sure, these larger issues are certainly at play<lb />here, but that shouldn't be the focus of the case. The<lb />focus of the case should be (surprise!) the facts. The<lb />race and class divide in Durham are appalling. The<lb />fact that you can drive through the lavish manicured<lb />rolling lawns of the Duke campus and drive just a<lb />short distance further into the crumbling chaos of<lb />utter poverty is completely inexcusable. But that<lb />isnTt whatTs on trial here. Turning this case into a<lb />symbol for the cityTs racial tensions is a huge mistake.<lb /><lb />Once I realized that Al Sharpton and I were<lb />on the same page, I knew I had to think long and<lb />hard about my position on the whole scandal. Is<lb /><lb />_this really a matter to be publicly protesting about?<lb /><lb />This isnTt a 15-year-old black kid being gunned<lb />down by cops in the street. That kind of thing<lb />has obvious racial implications that should make<lb />people angry. But rape is different, especially when<lb />the allegations are so unconvincing. No one really<lb />knows what happened except the accuser and the<lb />accused. Sure, CNN revealed that the boys shouted<lb />racial epithets at the girls as they danced and<lb />later joked about killing women. So maybe theyTre<lb />sexist, racist jerks, but it doesnTt make.them rapists.<lb /><lb />It is unfair to rally an entire community against<lb />the Duke students before it even goes to trial. ITm<lb />advising everyone that has already decided that the<lb />students are guilty to do what I did"ask yourself,<lb />are you really OK with four students being punished<lb />for racial injustices that go much deeper than what-<lb />ever took place at their party that night?<lb /><lb />Old tame<lb />Rock n Roll<lb /><lb />A response to the Switchfoot CD<lb />review commentary<lb /><lb />JESSICA DUNLOW<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />There was a lot of feedback about the latest<lb />Switchfoot CD review, published in the Jan.<lb />25 edition of the East Carolinian. Therefore, in<lb />order to straighten a few things out, it is time<lb />to explain what drove these ideas into my head.<lb /><lb />Our generation was pounded with boy bands,<lb />the Spice Girls and poppy girl solo artists that could<lb />not play their own music or even arrange it. I would<lb />prefer our music to not. be remembered by oBaby, One<lb />More Time by Britney Spears or oBye, Bye, Bye by<lb />N Sync. It was nice to have something to bounce and<lb />bop to when we were in middle school, but we did<lb />not grow up with the great bands of the early 1990s,<lb /><lb />because we were too young to know whom they were.<lb /><lb />However, here we are in the early 21st century<lb />and finally musically talented artists who play and<lb />write their own music and lyrics are flooding the<lb />airwaves. Granted, many of these bands are labeled<lb />oemo with their lovelorn lyrics and whiney voices.<lb />There are some great ones. Panic! At the Disco<lb />and The Used made male makeup attractive, and<lb />even The Donnas released some relatively catchy<lb />singles. But think of it this way, will this music still<lb />be around 40 years after it was released? Or rather,<lb />will these artists still be selling out concerts and<lb />performing 40 years after they began their careers?<lb /><lb />Our parentsT generation of the 1960s and 1970s<lb />produced the greatest music ever released. These LPs<lb />turned into top selling cassettes and now are most<lb />desired CDs. The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Pink<lb />Floyd, The Allman Brothers Band, Styx, Queen, The<lb />Grateful Dead and so many others created the music<lb />that hundreds of generations after us will still listen<lb />to. They will all wonder why no one can produce the<lb />same perfect sounds of these two generations of music.<lb /><lb />It is impossible to impersonate one of these bands,<lb />and it seems that some bands today are running out<lb />of things to write about. Shinedown, one of these<lb />newer groups, covered Lynyrd SkynyrdTs classic<lb />oSimple Man, and it just was not close to the origi-<lb />nal. So, this is where I get the notion that if their<lb />generation of music was so spectacular, ours seems<lb />quite lackluster. Perhaps it is not fair to hold the<lb />efforts of todayTs artists to the standards set by their<lb />obviously superior influences, but it is hard not to.<lb /><lb />Maybe I will be surprised by a band coming up<lb />soon, and I'll try not to hold it against the recent<lb />groups that they are not on the same level as the greats<lb />of Led Zeppelin, Billy Joel and the Who. In the words<lb />of the incomparable Bob Seger, oTodayTs music ainTt<lb />got the same soul/I like that old time rock n roll.<lb /><lb />MCT<lb /><lb />oDOWN AROUND<lb /><lb />AMARILLO, WASN'T IT?<lb /><lb />YOU SOLD ME A US<lb />VACUUM CLEANER<lb />WITH A BAD HOSE?<lb /><lb />{ Release your inner Ranter }<lb /><lb />WEDNESDAY JANUARY 31,2007 page A3<lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />Pirate Rants or pirate grudges?<lb /><lb />The East Carolinian does not endorse statements made in Pirate Rants. The report states, oThrough the documen-<lb />tary, Dr. Olson explains the new theory of Intelligent<lb />Design that replaces the Charles DarwinTs theory<lb />of evolution. Dr. Randy Olson does not support<lb />Intelligent Design, and it has not replaced DarwinTs<lb />theory of evoldtion by means of natural selection. The<lb />report goes on to misrepresent the theory of evolu-<lb />tion and natural selection, as the o...random muta-<lb />tion of cells. While mutation is part of the theory<lb />of evolution, this is an over-simplification. Random<lb />mutation of DNA in germline cells produces the raw<lb />material of evolution, upon which natural selection<lb />acts (removing those mutations that do not confer an<lb />advantage, and favoring those that do). This well-<lb />documented process produces the adaptations we can<lb />observe in the behavior and structure of organisms.<lb /><lb />The film Flock of Dodos was an attempt to give<lb />the proponents of Intelligent Design an opportunity<lb />to explain their views, and Dr. Olson explicitly states<lb />in the film that the arguments were unconvincing. In<lb />addition, the panel members pointed out numerous<lb />problems with the creationist arguments in the ques-<lb />tion and answer session. Furthermore, most of the<lb />people that we talked with after the film agreed that<lb />the Intelligent Design proponents had no evidence<lb />in support of their theory, and were being manipu-<lb />lated by the Discovery Institute, which refused to be<lb />interviewed in the film (Why? What does this group<lb />have to hide?). As Randy Olson says in the film, oThe<lb />Intelligent Design theory has stalled at the intuition<lb />stage. It is an interesting idea, but there is no evi-<lb />dence in support of it. The supporters of Intelligent<lb />Design have located some complex things in nature<lb />that they think cannot be explained in terms of Dar-<lb />winian theory (like the bacterial flagellum and its<lb />molecular structure), and have resorted to guessing<lb />that oan intelligent designer created them. But, when<lb />their chief spokesperson, Dr. Michael Behe (of Lehigh<lb />University), was questioned on who this Intelligent<lb />Designer was, he said it was oGod. He has no evi-<lb />dence of that. The evolutionists have evidence for the<lb />evolution of complexity and the intelligent design-<lb />ers do not. Thus, Intelligent Design should not be<lb />taught as a theory supported by evidence in any sci-<lb />ence class, because it ultimately is based on religion.<lb /><lb />We met with Randy Olson while he was here<lb />at ECU, and he would disagree with your report-<lb />ing"he is a firmly committed evolutionist. We<lb />have written to him about this article. The Biol-.<lb />ogy Department has a copy of the Flock of Dodos<lb />film, so if Davis or any student at ECU would<lb />like to see the movie again, we can arrange that.<lb /><lb />We were much happier with the Opinion piece<lb />oMore than a Flock of Dodos by Elizabeth Lauten.<lb />We agree with her that it was wonderful for the fac-<lb />ulty and students to see such an overwhelming posi-<lb />tive response to this film and the panel discussion. It<lb />was fun and we enjoyed the discussion and excellent<lb />questions. Randy Olson said that it was one of the otop<lb />five best screenings of his film ever and he was happy<lb />to have visited ECU. Our students showed at the panel<lb />discussion showed that they were among the best in<lb />the U.S., and the questions they asked were as good<lb />as those at Harvard and Yale, according to Randy.<lb /><lb />We are grateful that the East Carolinian coy-<lb />ered the Flock of Dodos screening and the seminar<lb />by Dr. Olson. However, we are sorry that Dr.<lb />OlsonTs views were mis-reported in your paper.<lb /><lb />Sincerely,<lb /><lb />Joseph J. Tie-<lb /><lb />The war in Iraq sparks discussions and artwork from ECU students.<lb /><lb />Students display and discuss<lb />artwork about the Iraq war<lb /><lb />_ While at War Art Show<lb /><lb />SHANNON DAVIS<lb />SENIOR WRITER<lb /><lb />On Wednesday, Feb. 7 at 7 p.m.<lb />in Mendenhall room 244 there will<lb />be a showcase of student art related<lb />to the war in Iraq. All students are<lb /><lb />invited to submit art or just to join<lb />in on the discussion. Students do<lb />not have to submit artwork in order<lb />to attend and participate in the<lb />discussion.<lb /><lb />The discussion is meant to find<lb />out the concerns of ECU students in<lb />regards to the war on terror. Many<lb />college students, faced with the war<lb />in Iraq and the ongoing threat of ter-<lb />rorists, find they now feel uncertain<lb />about a future they had just begun<lb />to plan. Some may be concerned<lb />about parents, relatives or friends in<lb />the military.<lb /><lb />Whether a student is directly or<lb />indirectly impacted, it is important<lb />to know that each person reacts dif-<lb />ferently to a crisis, and it is common<lb />and expected to experience a range of<lb />responses. Emotional responses can<lb />appear immediately or sometimes<lb />develop months later. Students who<lb />live away from home may have a more<lb />difficult time coping without the<lb />reassurance of having family nearby.<lb /><lb />Taking positive steps to address<lb />feelings of anxiousness due to the<lb />war is the best coping mechanism<lb />for students.<lb /><lb />oThe forth anniversary of the<lb />war is coming up. We wanted to see<lb />what college studentTs thought of the<lb />war by sharing their thoughts and<lb />submitting their artwork. ~<lb /><lb />oAny type of art can be submit-<lb />ted; short stories, pictures, paintings,<lb />songs, anything representing the<lb />war. There's no other<lb />way to release your thoughts quite like<lb />art. ItTs a good idea to use art for stu-<lb />dents who do not know any other way<lb />to communicate clearly, said Hunter<lb />Sills, junior graphic design major,<lb /><lb />All students are encouraged<lb />to participate in the discussion.<lb />Students can speak about any-<lb />thing they want such as results<lb />of the war, the roots of terror-<lb />ism, suicide bombings and related<lb />legal, religious, or social issues.<lb /><lb />The deadline to submit artwork<lb /><lb />ois Tuesday, Feb. 6. The ECU swimming and<lb />diving team requires that every<lb />athlete attend practice. On Tues-<lb />days and Thursdays they have<lb />two-a-days. In the afternoon on<lb />Monday, Wednesday and Friday<lb />they hit the weight room for an<lb />hour before they go to the pool.<lb />In addition, if there is no meet on<lb />Saturdays they have practice in<lb />the morning for two hours.<lb /><lb />The Pirates are not done with<lb />their season just yet; the Confer-<lb />ence USA tournament is coming<lb />up on Feb. 14 in Houston, TX.<lb />The pair of freshman swimmers<lb />will push to crack into the top 10<lb />all-time varsity swims. They hope<lb />to have some records under their<lb />belts this year or next year.<lb /><lb />The next couple of weeks the<lb />ECU swimming and diving team<lb />will be preparing for C-USA by<lb />tapering their practice distances<lb />and working for the most part<lb />on getting their techniques right<lb />and resting up. Most teams will<lb />rest their swimmers to give back<lb />some energy lost throughout<lb />the semester, so that during the<lb />tournament the fastest times will<lb />be recorded.<lb /><lb />With this season almost to<lb />a close Jeff Miller was already<lb />thinking about the off-season and<lb />how he will prepare for next year.<lb /><lb />oI'm gonna keep working hard<lb />and stay focused, said Miller.<lb /><lb />Briese is also looking to his<lb />own future and that of the team.<lb /><lb />oWe would really like to bring<lb />in some more fast kids. In fact<lb />last season the WomenTs Snowboard<lb />team finished third in the nation,<lb />and three members of the team were<lb /><lb />All-Americans, meaning that they<lb />placed in the top 15 individually.<lb />SophomoreTs Allison Evans and<lb />Whitney Sullivan as well as Neil<lb />Matthews who has since<lb />graduated were designated<lb />All-Americans last season.<lb />The ECU Club Skiing and<lb />Snowboarding team competes in<lb />the Southeastern Conference of the<lb />United States Collegiate Ski Associa- ;<lb />tion and they are in competition with<lb />other regional schools such as UNC,<lb />Duke, UVA, Appalachian State, Wil- -<lb />liam and Mary, Virginia Tech and<lb />James Madison. The Snowboard<lb /><lb />team competes in Giant Slalom and<lb />Boarder Cross, and the Ski Team<lb />competes in Giant Slalom and Skier<lb />Cross. There are'27 members of the<lb />team as a whole, 20 snowboarders,<lb />10 men and 10 women, and seven<lb />skiers. Each of the teams competes<lb />for nationals on their own.<lb /><lb />The Skiing and Snowboarding<lb />teams are at the midpoint of their<lb />season. The teams compete in four<lb />events each season. Team members<lb />pay a meager $250 annually to<lb />compete. For members of this yearTs<lb />team $250 covers transportation, lift<lb />tickets and hotel rooms to such exotic<lb /><lb />locales as Bryce Resort in Virginia,<lb />Hawk's Nest and Sugar Mountain in<lb />Boone, N.C., and Snowshoe Resort<lb />in West Virginia. .<lb /><lb />So far this season the team has<lb />competed in two events, at Bryce<lb />Resort and HawkTs Nest. At Bryce<lb />both the menTs and womenTs teams<lb />finished second and at HawkTs. Nest<lb />this past weekend the women fin-<lb />ished second and the men finished<lb /><lb />-third. The two remaining events<lb /><lb />are this upcoming weekend at Sugar<lb /><lb />Mountain and then the next weekend .<lb /><lb />at Snowshoe. The top three teams in<lb />the region qualify for nationals, soif<lb />the teams keep up this pace they will<lb />qualify for nationals in Winter Park,<lb />Colorado from March 5 to 11.<lb /><lb />It is too late to join the team this<lb />year, but withmany seniors graduating,<lb />the team will have plenty of openings<lb />next year for those who are interested.<lb /><lb />oNobody knew that we even<lb />existed, and we have a lot of people<lb />on the team who are about to gradu-<lb />ate. We need more people who are<lb />interested so that we can keep this<lb />thing going, says senior Snow-<lb />boarder Justin Kemp.<lb /><lb />The teams are looking for par-<lb />ticipants for next year, especially<lb />skiers; oOther schools are way more<lb />competitive with skiing than we<lb />are,T says sophomore womenTs snow-<lb />boarder Haley Hawkins. oThe only<lb />people on the ski team are people<lb />who snowboard and wanted to race.<lb /><lb />ECU skiersT the club team wants.<lb /><lb />you. oI'm sure there are some [good<lb />skiers] at ECU, says Hawkins obut<lb />they just donTt know that the ski<lb />team exists.<lb /><lb />Racing experience is by no means<lb /><lb />necessary to join the team. Hawkins<lb />had never raced competitively before<lb />she joined the team, oI was so<lb />nervous my first race but it wasnTt<lb />as awful as I thought it would be.<lb /><lb />The price for one season is only<lb />a fraction of what it would cost to<lb />ski or snowboard these courses<lb />recreationally.<lb /><lb />_ oWithout the team: wouldnTt be<lb />able to snowboard at all, but because<lb />of the team I get to go four weekends<lb />in a row, says senior snowboarder<lb />Travis Fowler. oThe amount you<lb />pay to be on the team could easily be<lb />spent in one weekend going to any<lb />of these places by yourself.<lb /><lb />oAlong with being a competi-<lb />tive team we're all also full time<lb />students, says Fowler. oFor this<lb />one month the whole team is going<lb />non-stop, but we enjoy it.<lb /><lb />Even though it is competitive,<lb /><lb />according to Kemp the best part of<lb />being on the team is the adrenaline<lb />rush that comes from flying down a<lb />mountain on a board.<lb />_ oJtTs.-an absolute blast, the feel-<lb />ing of getting on your board every<lb />weekend and just getting away from<lb />school and the stresses of school, itTs<lb />fantastic. :<lb /><lb />Students interested in the team<lb />for next season can visit the teamTs<lb />Web site on the Club Sports page at<lb />ecu.edu or find more information at<lb />the Recreation Center.<lb /><lb />- _ Even though, it seems as unlikely<lb /><lb />as a yeti walking through campus,<lb />there is a Ski and Snowboard Team<lb />at ECU, and there pretty good too.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb /></p>
