Monroe AHEC Conference<lb />Center. The speakers: included<lb />Dr. Mani S. Kavuru, chief: of<lb />Pulmonary and Critical Care<lb />Medicine and Terry Icard, physi-<lb /><lb />cian assistant at the ECU School<lb /><lb />of Medicine.<lb /><lb />The program was a com-<lb />munity education service for<lb />patients, parents, relatives, friends<lb />or anyone interested in learning<lb />about shortness of breath and<lb />other breathing problems. oBetter<lb />Breathing, Better Health? is a<lb />series of programs that will be<lb />offered on topics such as smoking,<lb />asthma, chronic obstructive lung<lb />disease, lung nodules and other<lb />lung problems.<lb /><lb />Eighteen people registered<lb />to be a part of the discussion.<lb />According to Terry Icard, the<lb />seminar was intended to have a<lb />small, intimate setting. People in<lb />attendance expressed their con-<lb />cerns for their health issues such<lb />as having asthma, various lung<lb />problems, diabetes, congestive<lb />heart failure and cancer.<lb /><lb />Sarah Bosse, a student at Pitt<lb />Community College, discussed her<lb />asthmatic history, explaining how<lb />her asthmatic symptoms amplified<lb />after moving to North Carolina.<lb /><lb />In response, Dr. Mani S.<lb />Kavuru said, oThe idea of envi-<lb />ronment and respiratory prob-<lb /><lb />floors of the building.<lb /><lb />The party was originally<lb />scheduled to last from 10:30 p.m.<lb />to 1:30 a.m., but it ended a little<lb />earlier than the team expected.<lb /><lb />According to Michael Mullies,<lb />the welcome center receptionist<lb />in Mendenhall on duty that eve-<lb />ning, four altercations occurred<lb />during the event and as a result,<lb />Mendenhall shut down around<lb />1:30 a.m. instead of the scheduled<lb />time of 2 a.m. When Mendenhall<lb />is shut down, people are asked to<lb />exit the building and allowed to<lb />reenter only in special circum-<lb />stances.<lb /><lb />Photo by Zach Sirkin<lb /><lb />Mullies said the first fight was<lb />between an ECU football player<lb />and an individual from out of<lb />town, over a female. The second<lb />fight broke out because, accord-<lb />ing to Mullies, oone girl told the<lb />other girl that her clothing looked<lb />bedazzled.?<lb /><lb />Mullies added that when<lb />police escorted the individuals<lb />involved in the first altercation<lb />out of Mendenhall, other incidents<lb />arose.<lb /><lb />ECU police officers and mem-<lb />bers of the Mendenhall staff<lb />agreed the party should come to<lb />a close after two minor arguments<lb /><lb />occurred.<lb /><lb />Captain Beth Watkins, ECU<lb />police departmentTs support divi-<lb />sion commander, said, oTwo alter-<lb />cations occurred that could have<lb />resulted in fights, but the individu-<lb /><lb />als that caused the problems were<lb /><lb />asked to leave the party.?<lb />Watkins said the situa-<lb />tion was not any different than<lb />what happens at most par-<lb />ties, and was not a big deal.<lb />oWe deal with altercations<lb />like this all the time and it isnTt<lb />unusual to shut down an event<lb /><lb />|<lb /><lb />see SHUT DOWN page A2<lb /><lb />Seti<lb />Greenville residents gather at the oBetter Breathing, Better Health? seminar Tuesday evening.<lb /><lb />lems is a common issue. If you<lb />have asthma, the idea is to move<lb />to a dryer climate, such as Ari-<lb />zona, but ITm not going to buy a<lb />plane ticket and go just for having<lb />asthma. The environment does<lb />not cause asthma. An environ-<lb />ment may make it become better<lb />or worse, but it does not cause<lb />asthma.?<lb /><lb />Ben Wilson, a resident of<lb />Greenville, said his reason for<lb />attending the program is because<lb />he experienced shortness of<lb />breath.<lb /><lb />oI was hoping to learn about<lb />the benefits of better breathing<lb />and how to do it,? he said.<lb /><lb />Dr. Kavuru gave advice to the<lb />group saying, oYou have to ask<lb />questions to your doctors, neigh-<lb /><lb />bors and the Internet to make the<lb />wisest decisions for your health<lb />care and medical decisions.?<lb /><lb />_ According to Dr. Kavuru,<lb />there are four cardinal symptoms<lb />for problems related to lung<lb />disease, which are coughing,<lb />trouble breathing, wheezing and<lb />chest pain.<lb /><lb />oEvery human being is enti-<lb />tled to cough. Coughing itself is<lb />not a disease. There are normal<lb />conditions in a normal life where<lb />people can still have a cough.<lb />It might last a day or two but a<lb />cough is a part of growing up and<lb />being an adult. A child may have<lb />two or three episodes of bronchi-<lb />tis, thatTs typical. If you have a<lb />cough or phlegm that lingers in<lb />an excessive amount, it requires<lb /><lb />further investigation. A cough is<lb />incredibly non-specific but can<lb />be present in many diseases,? Dr.<lb />Kavuru said.<lb /><lb />Dr: Kavuru added, oBreath-<lb />lessness counts on how much<lb />activity there has been to pro-<lb />duce the out of breath sensa-<lb />tion. Asthmatics have prominent<lb />wheezing but wheezing can occur<lb />in patients with emphysema or<lb />smoking-related diseases. Also,<lb />diabetes does not directly cause<lb />shortness of breath but it does<lb />affect your body, nerves, breath-<lb />ing muscles and peripheral circu-<lb />lation. Stethoscopes are used to<lb />detect wheezing in patients.?<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />news@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />ReservedT apartment billboard draws criticism<lb /><lb />(AP) " A billboard advertis-<lb />ing the apartment complex where<lb />a Clemson University student<lb />was strangled with a bikini top is<lb />drawing criticism for its sexually<lb />suggestive images.<lb /><lb />It shows a young woman in<lb />a spaghetti strap shirt smiling,<lb />with the word oReserved? below<lb />her. The<lb />bar complaint alleges those results<lb />weren't released to defense lawyers<lb /><lb />in a timely fashion and that Nifong<lb /><lb />repeatedly.said-in.court. he. had<lb />turned over all evidence that would<lb />potentially benefit the defense.<lb /><lb />NifongTs actions constitute a osys-<lb />tematic abuse of prosecutorial discre-<lb />tion ... prejudicial to the administra-<lb />tion of justice,T the complaint read.<lb /><lb />Nifong appeared with his attor-<lb />ney at a procedural conference<lb />Wednesday morning to discuss<lb />scheduling and other administra-<lb />tive details of the ethics complaint:<lb /><lb />Nifong declined to comment to<lb />reporters after the hearing, referring<lb />all questions to his attorney, David<lb />Freedman.<lb /><lb />oTd say any time any charges<lb />are filed with the state bar they're<lb />all serious and we want to make<lb />sure we handle them all properly,?<lb />Freedman said.<lb /><lb />Last month, the bar charged<lb />Nifong with violating four rules<lb />of professional conduct by making<lb />misleading and inflammatory com-<lb />ments about the athletes under sus-<lb />picion. Citing the conflict of interest<lb />created by the ethics charges, Nifong<lb />asked the state attorney generalTs<lb />office to take over the lacrosse case.<lb /><lb />Attorney General Roy Cooper<lb />has pledged a thorough review<lb />of the remaining charges pend-<lb />ing against lacrosse players Dave<lb />Evans, Collin Finnerty and Reade<lb />Seligmann. While Nifong dropped<lb />rape charges in late December after<lb />the accuser changed a key detail<lb />in her story, they are still charged<lb />with sexual offense and kidnapping.<lb /><lb />All have strongly maintained<lb />their innocence.<lb /><lb />Defense attorneys were able<lb />to determine from other docu-<lb />ments produced by Nifong that<lb />there may be additional test<lb />résults they had not seen, the<lb />new ethics complaint said. They<lb />filed a motion in December<lb />that described the missing tests<lb />in detail.<lb /><lb />At a hearing Dec. 15, the direc-<lb />tor of the DNA Security Inc. testified<lb />that he and Nifong agreed to include<lb />only DNA matches, and not the<lb />results finding no matches between<lb />the accuser and the tested players,<lb />in the report on his testing results.<lb />During the hearing, Nifong said he<lb />wasn't aware the test results were<lb />excluded from the report.<lb /><lb />oThe first I heard of this particu-<lb />lar situation was when I was served<lb />with these reports, this motion on<lb />Wednesday of this week,? Nifong<lb />said, according to the bar complaint.<lb /><lb />Outside of court, the bar com-<lb />plaint said, Nifong gave a different<lb />version of events to a reporter. oWe<lb />.. were trying to avoid dragging any<lb />names through the mud,? Nifong said.<lb /><lb />His trial on the ethics charges<lb />is set for May, although bar officials<lb />said at Wednesday's hearing they<lb />expect it will be pushed back to June. .<lb /><lb /></p>

After all, if a<lb />movie is popular and does well at the box office,<lb />whoTs to say that a sequel won't do the same? And<lb />if the sequel does well, why not make the series<lb />a trilogy? Sure, the second one received mixed<lb />reviews, but thereTs no reason to believe another<lb />movie using a similar plot won't do well. I can only<lb /><lb />imagine thatTs what goes through the heads of the __<lb /><lb />{ Your personal study break }<lb /><lb />THURSDAY JANUARY 25, 2007<lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />My life goal is to get one of my Rants<lb />to be the Rant of the Day. So, uh... Go<lb />Pirates.<lb /><lb />PAGE A4.<lb /><lb />NEWS: CELL PHONE IONITES IN MANS POCKET<lb /><lb />Hollywood elite when it comes to making trilogies. 2 Sa<lb /><lb />It seems that almost every trilogy follows<lb />a similar pattern. The first one is amazing and<lb />does great at the box office. The sequel is slightly<lb />worse than the first and does worse at the box<lb />office. If the series is made into a trilogy, the third<lb />one will demolish everything good about the first<lb />one and will fail miserably at the box office. The<lb />third one will be considered the outcast of the<lb />series, and will only be mentioned when some-<lb />one wants to prove how bad the particular series<lb />is. The history of movie trilogies speaks for itself.<lb /><lb />The example that springs immediately to mind is<lb />The Matrix trilogy. The first one, Enter the Matriz,<lb />received great reviews for its use of bullet time<lb />and orchestra music. The second one, The Matrix<lb />Reloaded, took these elements a little farther, but<lb />decided that the series needed more explosions. This<lb />left critics to be a little less receptive of the sequel. The<lb />final movie in the trilogy, The Matrix Revolutions,<lb />showed how quickly a series could turn bad. It left a<lb />bitter taste in the audienceTs mouth, and received less<lb />than half the box office earnings of its predecessors.<lb /><lb />This history of bad trilogies, which include<lb />other series such as Saw and Terminator, has not<lb />stopped movie producers from attempting to<lb />make one further. In the next year, many series<lb />will be getting their third movie, some of which<lb />are highly anticipated. Pzrates of the Caribbean will<lb />soon have its third movie, 4t WorldTs End, where<lb />the crew travels into the underworld in search of<lb />Jack Sparrow. Similar to The Matrix. trilogy, both<lb />the sequel and the third movie were being filmed<lb />at the same time. Hopefully the third Pirates<lb />receives a better reaction than the third Matrix.<lb />Also coming out in the near future is Spiderman 3. In<lb />this movie, Spiderman fights off multiple villains,<lb />from his ex-best friend to an alien symbiote bent<lb />on turning Spiderman evil. The other two Spider-<lb />man films have been fairly even, as far as content<lb />goes. Perhaps this one will continue the trend.<lb /><lb />There are some exceptions to the trilogy rule,<lb />such as The Lord of the Rings trilogy, but overall,<lb />trilogies are a mistake that too many movie produc-<lb />ers are making. They're so focused on making more<lb />money from the third movie that they lose sight of<lb />what made the series so popular in the first place. And<lb />until they realize this, moviegoers will constantly be<lb /><lb />shafted. They'll build their hopes up on a series, only ~<lb /><lb />to be disappointed by the time a trilogy is made.<lb /><lb />Lhe allure ©<lb />being free<lb />Why | skateboard<lb /><lb />MAGGIE SAIA<lb />CONTRIBUTING WRITER<lb /><lb />The few times that I have actually been on a<lb />skateboard I have A) had someone holding my hand,<lb />slowly guiding me down the sidewalk, B) had pil-<lb />lows shoved down my pants to prevent any future<lb />child-bearing injuries and.C) accidentally stepped<lb />on top of one while leaving friendsT houses, thus<lb />fighting against my own sense of balance and the<lb />knowledge that soon I would be greeting the street<lb />with my face.<lb /><lb />Yet, these experiences have not stopped me from<lb />loving the idea of skateboarding. The<lb />time of bickering and dividing our government has<lb />finally come to a close. I understand that many of you<lb />must be confused as to why. In case any of you missed<lb />it George W. Bush gave an enthralling state of the<lb />union, which boldly challenged the status quo. Four<lb />years after the successful invasion and occupation a<lb />light at the end of the tunnel has emerged, powered<lb />by clean fuels and temporary workers.<lb /><lb />Obvious to all, George W. Bush is a right-winged<lb />man. He o...takes the fight to the enemy to win the<lb />war on terror.? This is his charisma or charm, if you<lb />will, and is why America voted for him, twice. Such<lb />the man he is, he did not fail to recognize and con-<lb />gratulate the newly elected democrats. He went even<lb />further with a moving analogy of America, oCitizens<lb />donTt care much what aisle we sit on only as long as<lb />we can cross it when work needs to be done.? After<lb />a brief discussion of American unity and AmericaTs<lb />future, he went on to his main topics. :<lb /><lb />The president spoke of the nationTs economy. He<lb />has planned, in an economic report due to be released<lb />next week, to balance the federal budget and get rid<lb />of the federal deficit over the next five years. Unfor-<lb />tunately President Bush cannot just enact these and<lb />so it must pass through the new donkey congress.<lb />On to Medicade, Medicare and Social Security, Bush<lb />recognized that they werenTt very good. Further<lb />changes will most likely be in the economic proposal<lb />next week.<lb /><lb />Next on BushTs speech was AmericaTs education<lb />and the success of oNo Child Left Behind.? One of<lb />the greater parts of this optimal plan is that parents<lb />have the ooption to choose a better school.? This, in<lb />turn helps to make the worse school better. As this<lb />was one of BushTs most successful domestic plans he<lb />urged the Democrats to continue its success.<lb /><lb />Second from the top on BushTs list was also the<lb />second greatest threat to this country: Illegal Immi-<lb />gration. In order to stop the flow of terrorists, drugs<lb />and aliens Bush has proposed to double the border<lb />patrol and increase funds for better anti-immigration<lb />technology. But understanding America Bush wishes<lb />to continue the tradition of the melting pot. With<lb />that in mind he has brought forth a plan to allow for<lb />temporary worker status in the United States. This<lb />plan looks hopeful as, we all know, once an immigrant<lb />is working here he eventually begins missing home<lb />and leaves after several years.<lb /><lb />BushTs last remaining topics were AmericaTs<lb />reliance on oil and the Iraq War. BushTs outlook of<lb />the future looks hopeful as he went to propose a 20<lb />percent reduction of gas, a 35 billion barrel clean<lb />energy supply and an 8.5 billion conservation of oil<lb />all by 2017. Bush plans to achieve these great and<lb />noble tasks by furthering research in ethanol and<lb />pushing for oclean, safe, nuclear power.? All of these<lb />steps need to be taken as OPEC and the other Arab<lb />oil states do great harm to our country. Our reliance<lb />on foreign oil has become too great and President<lb />Bush, although not covered in his speech, allowed<lb />for drilling in Bristol Bay, Alaska. This too covers<lb />simple logic"why get oil from OPEC when we have<lb />it in our backyard?<lb /><lb />Winding down through this enchanting and spir-<lb />ited speech Bush began speaking of Iraq. Bush stood<lb />at the podium and reminded the congressmen and<lb />America of the kind of terror we are facing. This was<lb />then followed by stating that IraqTs success does not<lb />exist as we do not know what it might have stopped.<lb />Bush did mention the success of various terror cells<lb />which have been stopped due to American and British<lb />Special Forces and intelligence. His surge in troop<lb />numbers was a carefully considered decision in order<lb />to give a final push to do away with death-squads<lb />and terrorists mostly in and around Baghdad. This<lb />troop increase will overwhelm the insurgents. and<lb />allow for a stable, safe and democratic Iraq. Failure.<lb />is no option to Bush, oNothing is more important in<lb />our history than to secure Iraq.?<lb /><lb />In the end George W. Bush proposed several<lb />mind-blowing changes in this nationTs future. And<lb />hopefully with the full cooperation of the new con-<lb />gress this nation can quickly implement these plans.<lb /><lb />The following column has been shortened due to<lb />space restrictions. Grav-<lb />ity. The group of five embarked on a quick fall tour<lb />to promote the CD, and digitally released oDirty<lb />Second Hands? as their single in mid-September. The<lb />band acquired the famous Tim Palmer, who worked<lb />with Pearl Jam, U2 and the Cure, to produce their<lb />latest work, and collectively, Switchfoot and Palmer<lb />attempted to expand their sound.<lb /><lb />Overall, the lyrics encompassing Oh! Gravity<lb />are still the Switchfoot staple, uplifting lyrics with<lb />an ironic twist. However, Christian rock fans will<lb />pout hearing that the lyrics are not directed toward<lb />the faith and express feelings similar to every other<lb />rock band out today. SwitchfootTs lyrics are hardly<lb />as whiney, but they have the political and adverse<lb />aspects of sudden fame as undertones.<lb /><lb />Lyrics like these create a trivial sense of what<lb />their success has brought them. Switchfoot took<lb />the lyrics to a more mature audience in songs like<lb />oAwakening,? but it is a different sound of the CD<lb />that grabs immediate attention.<lb /><lb />Guitar riffs and drumbeats on this album are<lb />not what is typically expected from Switchfoot. The<lb />modern sounds of oMeant to Live? and oDare You to<lb />Move? are not present.<lb /><lb />For some reason, Switchfoot and Palmer experi-<lb />mented with the sounds of many different songs on the<lb />album, which takes away from what brought in fans<lb />from all over the world. oHead over Heels? has an odd<lb />twang country sound versus a basic copy of British pop<lb />rock in oYesterdays.? For some bands the mix up<lb />of sound works. However, for Switchfoot, it is important<lb />for them to maintain the sound that they created five<lb /><lb />Oh! D.<lb />Salinger (1961)<lb /><lb />People tend to site Catcher<lb />in the Rye as SalingerTs. seminal<lb />work, but I prefer Franny &amp; Zooey.<lb />It deals with a lot of the same<lb />themes as Catcher (alienation,<lb />anxiety, intellectual insecurity,<lb />ego and of course ophonies?)<lb />but in a more subtle way. The<lb />book is split in two sections, the<lb />first of which tells the story of<lb />Franny, a college undergradu-<lb />ate fed up with the insincerity<lb />of the world around her. The<lb />second section is about Zooey,<lb />FrannyTs wise older brother and<lb />his quest to soothe his troubled<lb /><lb />sister. The book was a cult clas-<lb />sic in the 1950s and 1960s and<lb />remains just as poignant today.<lb /><lb />White Teeth by Zadie Smith<lb />(2000)<lb /><lb />Reading. White Teeth is like<lb />taking a semester of sociology<lb />classes. The book tackles all the<lb />issues, gender, race, class and<lb />sexuality, without ever seeming<lb />stale. It takes place in London,<lb />telling the story of the Bangla-<lb />deshi Samad Iqbal, Brit Archie<lb />Jones and their families. Smith<lb />carefully examines the lives of<lb />immigrants and second-genera-<lb />tion immigrants dealing with the<lb />new culture and world in which<lb />they are immersed. With her<lb />elegant prose, Smith tells the<lb />story with a stylish mixture of<lb />humor and heart. Beautiful.<lb /><lb />The Perks of Being a Wall-<lb />flower by Stephen Chobosky<lb />(1999)<lb /><lb />I wish I could say I was one<lb />of those teenagers who spent their<lb />days perched over Camus or Tol-<lb />stoy, but I wasnTt. lread The Perks<lb />of Being A Wallflower instead.<lb /><lb />You drank.<lb />You danced.<lb /><lb />Free Pregnancy Tests<lb />Carolina Pregnancy Center<lb />Greenville (252) 757-0003<lb /><lb />www.carolinapregnancycenter.org<lb />Washington location: (252) 946-8040<lb />24 Hour Hotline: 1-800-395-HELP<lb /><lb />|<lb /><lb />|MoYe) xe) au =t-Jalal=yamece)palont-yaedts| mela<lb />Channel 13, Pitt County Television.<lb /><lb />People can tease me all they<lb />want and revoke my literature<lb />enthusiast card, but I still love<lb />this touching and heartbreaking<lb />epistolary novel as much as I did<lb />as a teen. It follows introverted<lb />Charlie through his first year<lb />of high school as he meets an<lb />unusual bunch of friends. They<lb />take Charlie in and introduce him<lb />to Rocky Horror Picture Show, Kurt<lb />Cobain and LSD. The character-<lb />ization in this book is some of<lb />the best ITve ever read. Plus, this<lb />book introduced me (and prob-<lb />ably swarms of other disaffected<lb />youths) to one of my all-time<lb />favorite bands: The Smiths. Say<lb />what you want, I think this book<lb />is amazing.<lb /><lb />A Heartbreaking Work. of<lb />Staggering Genius by Dave<lb />Eggers (2000)<lb /><lb />This memoir changed the<lb />way I think about literature and<lb />writing. Eggers tells the story of<lb />moving to California with his kid-<lb />brother shortly after the deaths of<lb />both their parents. Using prose,<lb />graphs and even the lyrics to<lb /><lb />JourneyTs Anyway You Want It, he<lb />manipulates the story heTs telling<lb />to reflect how he feels about the<lb />process of writing itself. He often<lb />stops in the middle of an anecdote<lb />and retells in a different way. ItTs<lb />kind of like those old episodes of<lb />Saved By the Bellwhen Zack would<lb />stop time and change things<lb />around to his liking. Three of the Pirates last four<lb />games were on the road, with ECU<lb />finishing up the trip in Hunting-<lb />ton, W.Va. against an impressive<lb />Marshall (12-7. 5-2 C-USA).<lb /><lb />The Pirates found themselves<lb />in a similar situation to open up<lb />the season. The team went on the<lb />road to play James Madison (15-2,<lb />7-0 CAA) in the first game of the<lb />year. After a tough 82-66 loss,<lb />many wondered if the team would<lb />live up to the high pre-season<lb />expectations.<lb /><lb />As it turns out, JMU is one of<lb />the strongest teams in the region.<lb />The Dukes are cruising through<lb />the Colonial Athletic Association<lb />and should be a lock to win the<lb />regular season title.<lb /><lb />The loss to JMU was the first<lb />of a five-game losing streak to<lb />open up the season. Four of the<lb />first five games were away from<lb />home; mirroring the stretch the<lb />Pirates are currently in. In a sign<lb />of maturity, ECU is fairing much<lb />better during the current road test.<lb /><lb />So far during the treacherous<lb />five-game span the Pirates are<lb />2-2. If ECU can steal one from<lb />Marshall, the trip will be viewed<lb />as a success compared tothe rough<lb />run earlier in the year.<lb /><lb />Sophomore guard Jessica Slack<lb />thinks that the team has shown<lb />major improvements since the five-<lb />game losing streak.<lb /><lb />oWe've definitely been through<lb />some kind of tough times this year, but<lb />were working things out,? said Slack.<lb />oWe've become a lot more mature<lb />in the last few weeks, I think, since<lb />the conference [play] -has started.?<lb /><lb />The Pirates took it to Marshall<lb />at Minges Coliseum in the C-USA<lb /><lb />. opener for both teams, drubbing<lb />the Thundering Herd, 73-51.<lb /><lb />Photo by Tyrrell Gordy<lb /><lb />Marshall has lost only one game<lb />in the conference since, falling on<lb />the road at Rice in a heartbreaker,<lb />83-79. The Thundering Herd will<lb />definitely be looking for payback<lb />after such an embarrassing loss.<lb /><lb />Senior center Cherie Mills<lb />realizes that to make this season<lb />special, ECU will have to start<lb />winning more games on the road.<lb /><lb />oT would love to have most of<lb />our games at home, but unfortu-<lb />nately we have to go away,T said<lb />Mills. oWe haven't been doing so<lb />good on the road, so we have to<lb /><lb />{ECUTs Inside Source}<lb /><lb />THURSDAY JANUARY 25, 2007<lb /><lb />PAGE AS<lb /><lb />pick things up a little bit.?<lb /><lb />At this point in the season<lb />the Pirates are a respectable 7-4<lb />at home, but a lowly 1-8 on the<lb />road. ECUTs only win on the road<lb />came this past weekend, when they<lb />beat a porous Memphis (3-18, 0-7)<lb />squad, 69-57.<lb /><lb />With five of the last nine con-<lb />ference games on the road, the<lb />Pirates need to step up their road<lb />game. This sentiment was echoed<lb />by Head Coach Sharon Baldwin-<lb />Tener at practice this week.<lb /><lb />oT think that we played a lot of<lb /><lb />Former C-USA Freshman-of-the-year and starting point guard Jasmine Young hopes to build on the chemistry center Cherie<lb /><lb />games on the road, and we played<lb />a lot of tough opponents,? said<lb />Baldwin-Tener.<lb /><lb />Among the teams that the<lb />Pirates have lost to away from<lb />home are N.C State (13-7, 2-3<lb />ACC) and #23 Pittsburgh (15-3,<lb />3-2 Big East).<lb /><lb />Baldwin-Tener doesnTt want to<lb />make any excuses about her team,<lb />but remains optimistic about the<lb />rest of the season..oWe'Tve only<lb />won one game on the road, so ITm<lb />hoping we can get some of these<lb />[road games] to finish up the<lb /><lb />oised to make a move<lb /><lb />eS<lb /><lb />Mills and her have built.<lb /><lb />season and get some wins.?<lb /><lb />ECU currently sits in sixth<lb />place in C-USA, but is only one<lb />game out of third place, and two<lb />games out of second place. ITm just lucky and<lb />honored to be playing for ECU<lb />and I have a tremendous amount<lb />of pride every time I pull the jersey<lb />over my head. ItTs just an awesome<lb />opportunity to be out there skating<lb />with these guys.?<lb /><lb />Brearley claims that there is a<lb />difference from going in late in the<lb />game than playing from the start.<lb /><lb />oThe first semester I didnTt<lb />realistically know ifI was going to<lb />see any ice time other than warm-<lb />ups. You're cold and your muscles<lb />are pretty tight after sitting on<lb />the bench for two periods, maybe<lb />even more sometimes. I felt more<lb />at home in the net when I knew I<lb />was going into it getting the start.<lb />I was able to prepare mentally for<lb />the game ahead so I had more of<lb />an advantage,? he said.<lb /><lb />Pirate head coach Wayne Cox<lb />stated after the Appalachian State<lb />game that Brearley is doing excep-<lb />tional for not having much ice time<lb />this season.<lb /><lb />oHe was thrust right into the<lb />battlefront,? said Cox. oHe hasn't<lb />let us down. I know it was prob-<lb />ably frustrating for him the first<lb />part of the season not to get a<lb /><lb />lot of playing time but he has got.<lb /><lb />it now. Right now ITm equally<lb />confident putting him in versus<lb />Brent; I mean we got two excellent<lb />goaltenders.?<lb /><lb />BrearleyTs love of ECU has<lb />been reflected back to him by the<lb /><lb />hundreds of Pirate ice hockey fans.<lb />He knows that if the Pirates win<lb />two games this weekend, it would<lb />put them in position to get a shot<lb />at going to nationals.<lb /><lb />oHopefully, we can come out<lb />with two wins but realistically<lb />they are going to be two extremely<lb />huge games that will most likely<lb />have some bearing on whether we<lb />get to nationals,? Brearley said.<lb />oTm just going take it one game at<lb />a time and personally, take it one<lb />shot at a time.?<lb /><lb />The 215-pound Brearley<lb />wears the number 35 because of<lb />Mark Richter, the former New<lb />York Ranger. The time. has come<lb />to make a lasting mark on the<lb />young ECU hockey program. The<lb />obackup? goalie, as he often calls<lb />himself, has been waiting all his<lb />life for this chance since he started<lb />playing competitive hockey when<lb />he was only six years old.<lb /><lb />All the hard work seems to be<lb />paying off for Brearley who expects<lb />to return to the back up role in<lb />two weeks when Falcon returns.<lb /><lb />When Brearley steps onto<lb />ice this weekend against number<lb />three ranked Kennesaw State and<lb />the University of Georgia, all the<lb />eyes will be focused on him, but he<lb />claims to have success, he must not<lb />let all this get to his head.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />WEta elonnenmtlonce<lb />Den ©) al eb<lb /><lb />GREAT-SELEGTION OF YOUR<lb />FAVORITE CATALOG CLOTHING<lb /><lb />atalog<lb />onnection<lb /><lb />210 E 5TH ST. 758-8612 M-S 10-6 SUN 1-5<lb /><lb />DsTREET<lb /><lb />GREENVILLE, NC<lb /><lb />Corner of 5th &amp; Cotanche<lb /><lb />Serving Lunch, Dinner &amp;<lb /><lb />Late-Night Breakfast!<lb /><lb />Best Pizza!?<lb /><lb />FREE DELIVERY<lb />752-BOLI (2654)<lb /><lb />We Accept<lb /><lb />PIZZA<lb />SUBS<lb />STROMBOLI<lb />PASTA<lb />APPS<lb />SALADS<lb />DESSERTS<lb />LO-CARB<lb />&amp; MUCH<lb />MORE!<lb /><lb />oNoted GreenvilleTs<lb /><lb />WATCH<lb /><lb />ESPN<lb />FULL COURT<lb />on 15 TVs<lb />including 2<lb />50?
