Bush is sworn in prior to giving his State of the Union address Tuesday evening.<lb /><lb />(AP) " A politically weak-<lb />ened President Bush implored<lb />a skeptical Congress Tuesday<lb />night to embrace his unpopular<lb />plan to send more U.S. troops to<lb />Iraq, saying it represents the best<lb />hope in a war America must not<lb />lose. oGive it a chance to work,?<lb />he said.<lb /><lb />Facing a political showdown<lb />with Democrats and Republicans<lb />alike, Bush was unyielding on Iraq<lb />in his annual State of the Union<lb />address. He also sought to revive<lb />his troubled presidency with<lb />proposals to expand health insur-<lb />ance coverage and to slash gaso-<lb />line consumption by 20 percent<lb />in a decade.<lb /><lb />Democrats, and even some<lb />Republicans, scoffed at his<lb />Iraq policy.<lb /><lb />oWe need a new direction,?<lb />said freshman Sen. Jim Webb,<lb />picked by the Democrats to deliver<lb />their response to Bush. oThe<lb />majority of the nation no longer<lb />supports the way this war is being<lb />fought; nor does the majority of<lb />our military,? said Webb, a Viet-<lb />nam veteran opposed to BushTs<lb />invasion of Iraq.<lb /><lb />Republican Sen. Norm Cole-<lb />man of Minnesota, also took issue<lb />with Bush. oI canTt tell you what<lb />the path to success is, but itTs not<lb />what the president has put on the<lb />table,? he said.<lb /><lb />It was a night of political the-<lb />ater as Bush went before the first<lb />Democratic-controlled Congress<lb />in a dozen years with his lowest<lb /><lb />approval ratings in polls.<lb /><lb />Democratic Speaker Nancy<lb />Pelosi of California, the first<lb />woman to lead the House, sat<lb />over BushTs shoulder, next to Vice<lb />President Dick Cheney. Reach-<lb />ing out to the Democrats, Bush<lb />opened with a tribute to Pelosi and<lb />paused to shake her hand. He also<lb />asked for prayers for Democratic<lb />Sen. Tim Johnson, hospitalized<lb />for more than a month after suf-<lb />fering a brain hemorrhage, and<lb />Republican Georgia Rep. Charlie<lb />Norwood, suffering from cancer.<lb /><lb />The speech audience included<lb />up to a dozen House and Senate<lb />members who have announced<lb />they are running for president or<lb />are considered possible contenders.<lb /><lb />Bush divided his speech<lb />between domestic and foreign<lb />issues but the war was topic No. 1.<lb /><lb />Pelosi set the tone for Demo-<lb />crats. She sat silently and did not<lb />applaud as Bush warned of high<lb />stakes in Iraq and said American<lb />forces must not step back before<lb />Baghdad is secure.<lb /><lb />With Congress poised to<lb />deliver a stinging rebuke on his<lb />troop increase, he made a personal<lb />plea to lawmakers.<lb /><lb />oT have spoken with many of<lb />you in person. I respect you and the<lb />arguments you made,? Bush said.<lb />oWe went into this largely united,<lb />in our assumptions and in our con-<lb />victions. And whatever you voted<lb />for, you did not vote for failure.?<lb /><lb />oOur country is pursuing a<lb />new strategy in Iraq and I ask you<lb /><lb />to give it a chance to work,? Bush<lb />said. oAnd I ask you to support<lb />our troops in the field and those<lb />on their way.?<lb /><lb />Hesaid the Iraq war hadchanged<lb /><lb />dramatically with the outbreak of<lb /><lb />sectarian warfare and reprisals.<lb /><lb />oThis is not the fight we<lb />entered in Iraq, but it is the fight<lb />we are in,? the president said.<lb />oEvery one of us wishes that this<lb />war were over and won. Yet it<lb />would not be like us to leave our<lb />promises unkept, our friends aban-<lb />doned and our own security at risk.<lb /><lb />oLadies and gentlemen: On<lb />this day, at this hour, it is still<lb />within our power to shape the out-<lb />come of this battle,? the president<lb />said. oSo let us find our resolve and<lb />turn events toward victory.?<lb /><lb />Key Republicans have joined<lb />Democrats in drafting resolu-<lb />tions of opposition to the plans<lb />he announced two weeks ago to<lb />send an additional 21,500 troops<lb />to Iraq. Bush said his approach<lb />had the best chance to succeed,<lb />but clearly many lawmakers, and<lb />overwhelming majority of Ameri-<lb />cans, disagreed.<lb /><lb />oMany in this chamber under-<lb />stand that America must not fail in<lb />Iraq because you understand that<lb />the consequences of failure would<lb />be grievous and far reaching,? the<lb />president said. oIf American forces<lb />step back before Baghdad is secure,<lb />the Iraqi government would be<lb />overrun by extremists on all sides.?<lb /><lb />see UNION page A2<lb /><lb />WEDNESDAY JANUARY 24, 2007<lb /><lb />Renown poet and civil-rights activist Maya Angelou will come to Greenville<lb /><lb />Maya Angelou to<lb /><lb />speak to ECU students<lb /><lb />Committee on the<lb />Status of Women and<lb />LWCC collaborate<lb /><lb />JENELLE CONNER<lb />NEWS EDITOR<lb /><lb />Dr..Maya:Angelow is*sehed-<lb />uled to speak at Rock Springs<lb />Conference Center on March 23,<lb />in conjunction with ECU's cen-<lb />tennial events.<lb /><lb />The ECU Committee on the<lb />Status of Women and the Ledo-<lb />nia Wright Cultural Center have<lb />pooled resources to make the<lb />event possible. We hear it<lb />week after week that our articles are uninteresting,<lb /><lb />poorly written and everything else, and frankly, ITm 8<lb /><lb />tired of hearing it.<lb /><lb />I write for the paper not because I need the money,<lb />not because I am a journalism major or even a com-<lb />munication major. ] am a business major Just writing<lb />because I thought it would be a good way to,bring<lb />some news stories to people who otherwise /would<lb />not hear them. After writing 15 or so articles, I have<lb />come to realize that people donTt really read or care<lb />about the articles I write. Granted, there are a small<lb />percentage of people who do read the articles and<lb />appreciate them, but the overwhelming majority of<lb />you will pick up the paper, read the Rants and pitch<lb />it. It is those people that we have trouble reaching out<lb />to. How can we make a newspaper that is interesting<lb />for people who read no other newspapers?<lb /><lb />In order to improve the paper we have to receive<lb />feedback. We hear over and over that our paper stinks,<lb />but we never receive suggestions. The Pirate Rants<lb />are clogged everyday with nice guys who canTt find<lb />girls, nice girls that are stuck with psychos and a<lb />range of other meaningless topics. What we donTt hear<lb />are suggestions. If you donTt like the articles in the<lb />paper, let us know what we can do to improve them.<lb />If you want to be a odorm room editor? and critique<lb />the paper for its grammatical errors thatTs fine, next<lb />time come fill out an application.<lb /><lb />We are a student-run paper written for the stu-<lb />dents, and you, the student, can do more than rant<lb />about Ugg boots and dirty roommates. Use the Pirate<lb />Rants and the Web site for something positive and<lb />let us know what you want to read so we can get it in<lb />ink. We would like the paper to be as interesting as<lb />possible for everyone. It is not our goal to bore you.<lb />So before you complain about how dumb this article<lb />was or how bad the column is, think about what you<lb />want to see 1n print.<lb /><lb />Who was he<lb />winking at?<lb /><lb />Thoughts on our presidentTs 2007<lb />State of the Union attempt<lb /><lb />JESSICA DUNLOW<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Two things President George Bush did in his State<lb />of the Union address last night: acknowledging the<lb />fact that we finally have a woman as the speaker of<lb />the house, and he plugged the genocide in Darfur. OK,<lb />he also pronounced onuclear? correctly three times in<lb />a row. I am hardly a liberal, but I am definitely not a<lb />conservative, and this speech Just did not correct the<lb />skepticism that has developed in America.<lb /><lb />Regardless of what Bush said during his address,<lb />the fact is that there were too many elephants sitting<lb />in the house to have all of the policies enforced. The<lb />Republicans were ecstatic to applaud their last chance<lb />in the United States government, whereas the Demo- -<lb />crats mostly osat on their hands? and showed little<lb />support for most issues.<lb /><lb />I love the idea of alternative fuels. Who wouldn't?<lb />Finally breaking ties with those hostile Middle Eastern<lb />countries can only benefit us, as Bush sort-of stated.<lb />However, cutting our gasoline use by 20 percent in the<lb />next decade is unrealistic. This means providing avail-<lb />able alternatives to almost every gasoline consumer in<lb />the United States, which is also unrealistic.<lb /><lb />The biggest issue facing Bush was the War in<lb />Iraq, but the only thing that seemed out of line was<lb />his wording of, oself-sacrifice of the American people.?<lb />This definitely kept the democrats in their seats. He<lb />proceeded to beg and plead with the house and senate<lb /> to consider his plan and to give it a chance at provid-<lb />ing the needed changes in the war. I know that if it<lb />does not show improvement in the following months,<lb />the elephants will take it out of rotation. The best idea<lb />concerning the War was BushTs proposal to create an<lb />Advisory Board. Imagine what the Republicans and<lb />Democrats could do on a committee together. Disagree<lb />and get nowhere? Maybe. However, hopefully, his idea<lb />might actually work and the War will be managed in<lb />the interest of both parties and the country.<lb /><lb />The biggest deal to me and to most college-aged,<lb />students is definitely the economy. Of course, it is<lb />fabulous that we have now had 41 straight months of<lb />ouninterrupted job growth,? but the fact is that the<lb />wages are increasing unevenly: The average employer<lb />in the corporate world is making 400 times the rate<lb />that the employees are making. This affects all of us<lb />graduating and heading into the workforce, because we<lb />might not receive the proper wages for our work.<lb /><lb />Bush wants oNo Child Left Behind? to be passed<lb />again by congress. I say it needs definite revisions. He<lb />mentioned improving science and mathematic skills,<lb />but there is a point that a school whose reading com-<lb />prehension is so low, that it is forcing their chemistry<lb />department to take days out of the classroom to have<lb />oplanning days? seems completely irrelevant. Yes! This<lb />did happen back in my hometown. Sure, give the par-<lb />ents the right to choose the schools their kids attend;<lb />finally, we will have all of them together!<lb /><lb />Overall, George BushTs liberalized version of the<lb />2007 State of the Union address seemed quite appro-<lb />priate for his unfortunate circumstances in Congress.<lb />One more question, who theT heck was he winking atT<lb /><lb />[WEATHER CHANNEL CLIMATE EXPERT CALLS fond 7)<lb />DECERTIFYING GLOBAL WARMING SKEPTICS<lb /><lb />{From one desk to another}<lb /><lb />WEDNESDAY JANUARY 24,2007 page A3<lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />| am. obsessed with Sims and Guitar<lb />Hero II... It<lb />was well known, even before starting college, that<lb />they would be harder, longer and more expensive.<lb />Now in college only the latter seems to hold true.<lb />How did it come to this? Now that I am in college,<lb />how could my biggest enemy become books? Well<lb />in my case, I believe it starts with two key issues"<lb />teachers never using them, and the epic price.<lb /><lb />Just like everyone, I have had a bad experience<lb />with buying books in college, but last semester<lb />was one that has been especially scarring. Thir-<lb />teen books seem like a lot to some and not a lot to<lb />others. Either way, it isnTt cheap. Lucky for me last<lb />semester I managed to get my book list about two<lb />weeks before school started, so I invested the time<lb />to buy the books online. After the two weeks I had<lb />all my books and was about to begin the semester<lb />with one of the heaviest book-loads I have ever had.<lb />Nearing the end of the semester, I haven't read six<lb />of these books. Was this my fault? No, not this time,<lb />this time I was never assigned to read these books.<lb />Sadly enough five of these were for one class. The<lb />extra one wasnTt even applicable to the class.<lb /><lb />It was astonishing to see some of these books,<lb />at the beginning of the semester and think of how<lb />I would have:to read them and how I would know<lb />the material by the end of the semester. Flashing<lb />back to the end of that particular class, I see that<lb />1,000-paged: book and vaguely remember the one<lb />chapter assigned to me.<lb /><lb />Why donTt the professors care that we have to<lb />spend $400-$600 on books? And why if I spend<lb />$80 on a book is a professor criticizing it and not<lb />using it? Perhaps I do not know the entire story<lb />behind how a professor decides on the books used<lb />in a course, but is it too much to ask for at least<lb />an educated decision? I am just amazed at how, in<lb />some classes, not only were my high school teachers<lb />better but my high school textbooks, which were<lb />free, were used more often.<lb /><lb />And of course there is nothing better than<lb />buying a book, watching it collect dust for three<lb />months and then going to sell it at one of the book-<lb />hitches. Like most people I have high expectations<lb />as I walk up to the blonde girl stationed there.<lb />Twenty dollars for the 200-page books, $30 for<lb />400 pages and so on. All of this inevitably comes<lb />crashing down to the realistic answers of, oUmmm,<lb />they arenTt taking these anymore? or, oOK, two<lb />dollars.? And then there is the sad walk back home<lb />clenching your disappointing $15 and staring at<lb />your fourth edition Guide to Writing.<lb /><lb />Now | arrive to this semester. Fourteen books,<lb />topping my previous record, and this time I had no<lb />time to buy them online. I had my book list happily<lb />posted for me two days before class, which left me<lb />screwed for the.online option. I haven't bought all<lb />of my books just yet, since I do not trust professors<lb />to use them anymore, but I am already up to $500.<lb /><lb />This semester is looking a tad more hopeful<lb />than last but as I move along, we will see if my<lb />professors will commit to the orequired? stamp<lb />next to their assigned books or leave me out to dry<lb />with less money and nothing learned.<lb /><lb />Sarah Bell<lb /><lb />- Editor in Chief<lb />Jenelle Conner ; Greg Katski<lb />News Editor Sports Editor<lb /><lb />Sarah Campbell<lb />Pulse Editor<lb /><lb />Elise Phillips<lb />Asst. When the ball<lb />goes out of bounds the team who did<lb />not touch or possess the ball last is<lb />awarded a soccer-type throw-in. To<lb />score a point (key as it is called) a<lb />player must cross the goal line with<lb />two of their four wheels while retain-<lb />ing possession of the ball.<lb /><lb />The player with the ball has<lb />unlimited pushes but must dribble<lb />or pass the ball once every ten<lb />seconds or a turnover is awarded.<lb />Five players from each team are<lb />allowed on the court at one time,<lb />and each team can have up to 12<lb />players total. Since the wheelchair<lb />rugby games are odrop-in? or pick-<lb /><lb />up games, the rules arenTt exactly<lb />followed very closely.<lb /><lb />But just because the games<lb />are for fun does not mean that<lb />they donTt involve plenty of chairs<lb />tipping over and wheelchairs col-<lb />liding. The serious players shown<lb />in Murderball use chairs that<lb />are essentially battering rams,<lb />designed specifically to take that<lb /><lb />kind of contact.<lb /><lb />Even the odrop-in? games at<lb />the Recreation Center are physi-<lb />cal and not a sport for the faint<lb />of heart.<lb /><lb />o(Wheelchair rugby] is very<lb />physical, sometimes even danger-<lb />ous,? said Malave. oITve gone home<lb />with my hands bleeding from the<lb />wheels several times.<lb /><lb />For students like Malave, who<lb />are not disabled, participating m<lb />Adapted Recreation activities pro-<lb />vides them with a certain amount<lb />of perspective. oIt also gives you<lb />an understanding and apprecia-<lb />tion of what disabled people have<lb />to deal with on a daily basis,? said<lb />Malave.<lb /><lb />Mark Zupan, one of the many<lb />inspiring athletes depicted in<lb />Murderbail, talks in the film aboutT<lb />overcoming his disability: oITve<lb />actually done more in a chair;<lb />than I did able-bodied, donTt let<lb />this thing limit you from doing<lb />anything you want.<lb /><lb />The Recreation Center offers<lb />many other Adapted Recreation<lb />activities for students, faculty and<lb />staff with disabilities.<lb /><lb />This semester, in addition to<lb />wheelchair rugby and wheelchair<lb />basketball drop-in games, there<lb />will be a climbing wall clinic, aT<lb />cultural arts festival (for those not<lb />as interested in athletics), a crank |<lb />hand cycling workshop, a scuba<lb />clinic, a beep baseball clinic for<lb />the visually impaired, a kayaking<lb />clinic and an Active Living Beach<lb />Retreat at Pine Knoll Shores.<lb /><lb />More information about the<lb /><lb />Adapted Recreation program and<lb /><lb />a full schedule of events is available<lb />at the Recreation Center. The next<lb />event will be wheelchair basketball<lb />drop-in games this Thursday,<lb />Jan. 25 at 8 p.m. at the Recreation<lb />Center. Registration for the event<lb />will begin at 7:30 p.m.<lb /><lb />Another service available for<lb />disabled students, faculty and<lb />staff is the Workout Partner Pro-<lb />gram. The Recreation Center will<lb />provide a staff member to assist.<lb />anyone who might need help to<lb />workout in the weight room.<lb />Crank hand cycles are also avail-<lb />able to be checked out. Anyone<lb />interested in participating in these<lb />events can visit ecu.edu/csstu-<lb />dentlife/crw/integrated_sports/<lb />index.cfm.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb /></p>
