Some<lb />construction workers on site said<lb />that they remember the fountain<lb />from their childhood at least<lb />twenty years ago.<lb /><lb />oNobody knows how old it<lb />was,? said Marshall Moser, assis-<lb />tant project manager for Rivers<lb />and Associates Construction Com-<lb />pany. o[The fountain] was leaking<lb />and it had settled and we donTt<lb />know why... it was a maintenance<lb />issue. When the fountain settled it<lb />moved the sewage lines.?<lb /><lb />Director of facility manage-<lb />ment, Bill Bagnell said, oWhen we<lb /><lb />discovered what the problem was<lb /><lb />we did some investigating, and<lb /><lb />now itTs getting taken care of.?<lb />Junior communication major,<lb /><lb />Jenelle Conner said, oI bottomed<lb /><lb />out my car going over some<lb />tubing.? The tubing she ran over is<lb />a technique Rivers and Associates<lb />uses to keep the sewage system<lb />running while working on it at the<lb />same time. They are the orange<lb />tubes students may have seen by<lb />ChancellorTs Way.<lb /><lb />The reconstruction of the<lb />fountain is entirely funded by<lb />student fees. Junior communica-<lb />tion major, Shannon Davis said,<lb />o] think thatTs ridiculous. Student<lb />funds should be applied to more<lb />productive causes such as improv-<lb />ing dorms, on-campus activities or<lb />other opportunities.?<lb /><lb />Other students have felt the<lb />same way.<lb /><lb />According to Lizz Wells, junior<lb />photography major, oI understand<lb />that the fountain is to better the<lb />appearance of our campus, but I<lb />feel it wasnTt a choice made by a<lb />student to have a fountain. ITm sure<lb />there is some sort of construction<lb /><lb />see FOUNTAIN page A2<lb /><lb />Photo by Terrell Gordy<lb /><lb />oe<lb /><lb />Students walk by the construction areas aro!<lb /><lb />und the Whichard, Wright and Graham buildings in central campus.<lb /><lb />Documentary and discussion on evolution comes to ECU<lb /><lb />se<lb /><lb />\N<lb /><lb />The discussion of the documentary, Flock of Dodos on Wednesday brought out many students and faculty, as well as others interested in the science of life and evolution.<lb /><lb />Evolution versus "<lb />Intelligent Design<lb /><lb />SHANNON DAVIS<lb />SENIOR WRITER<lb /><lb />Randy Olson, former professor<lb />of marine ecology at the Univer-<lb />sity of New Hampshire and: film<lb />director of Flock of Dodos: The<lb />Evolution-Intelligent Design Circus<lb />calls his fellow biologists ododos?<lb />in his new documentary shown at<lb />Hendrix theatre in Mendenhall<lb />Tuesday Jan. 16. This term is far<lb />from a compliment since dodo<lb />birds are known for being dumb.<lb /><lb />Flock of Dodos: The Evolu-<lb />tion-Intelligent Design Circus is<lb />a documentary film about the<lb />evolution versus intelligent design<lb />controversy in Kansas and Dover,<lb />Pa. Through the documentary,<lb />Olson explains the new intelligent<lb /><lb />design theory that replaces the<lb />Charles DarwinTs theory of evolu-<lb />tion. Intelligent design implies the<lb />detection of intelligent behavior<lb />in nature instead of accepting the<lb /><lb />random mutation of cells.<lb /><lb />Critics of the intelligent design<lb />movement say if the patterns in<lb />the natural world are caused by<lb /><lb />an intelligent agency, who is this<lb /><lb />intelligent being or who creating<lb />the activity? They assert evolu-<lb />tion is a fact; it does not have<lb />vague gaps, leaving people with<lb />uncertainties.<lb /><lb />In the film, a husband of a<lb />republican school board member<lb />said, oThe neat part about this<lb />country is that we can agree to<lb />disagree.?<lb /><lb />According to Olson, oHumans<lb />like a simple answer to complex<lb />problems,? which is why he advo-<lb />cates for scientists to communicate<lb />more effectively through less<lb /><lb />American soldiers stationed in lraq travel by foot through the sand.<lb /><lb />scientific means of speech and<lb />examples.<lb /><lb />Following the viewing of the<lb />film was a panel of ECU professors<lb />and other guests who discussed<lb />their opinions on the material<lb />expressed in the film.<lb /><lb />Among the panelists was Dr.<lb />Kyle Summers, an associate pro-<lb />fessor for evolution. In response<lb />to the film Summers said, oI liked<lb />the approach of the film. It allowed<lb />for both sides to express their<lb />arguments.?<lb /><lb />Another panelist, a professor<lb />of religious studies, Dr. Calvin<lb />Mercer said, oThere was great<lb /><lb />irony in the film. Both sides see<lb /><lb />themselves defending the biblical<lb />view of things. I think the intel-<lb />ligent. design approach is doing<lb />a great injustice to the Bible. ITm<lb />concerned about religion with the<lb />intelligent design movement.?<lb />Dr. Jason Bond, an associate<lb /><lb />Warm a troop s<lb /><lb />Give 2 the Troops for<lb />ValentineTs Day<lb /><lb />SHANNON DAVIS<lb />SENIOR WRITER<lb /><lb />Since December 2002, Give 2<lb /><lb />The Troops has supported hun-<lb />dreds of thousands of deployed<lb />U.S. troops with care packages<lb />and letters from all over the<lb />nation. Give 2 the Troops uses<lb />their care packages as a way to<lb />show troops who are fighting<lb />abroad that their sacrifices are<lb />appreciated.<lb />T According to give2thetroops.<lb />org, their projects are about<lb />oGiving back to those who give<lb />all.? The morale of many troops<lb />who have been deployed to Iraq,<lb />Afghanistan, Kuwait and the Per-<lb />sian Gulf has improved because of<lb />these packages.<lb /><lb />According to their mission<lb />statement their main goals are,<lb />oTo support the physical, moral<lb />and spiritual health of America's<lb />armed forces in combat zones<lb />around the world through the<lb />letters and packages prepared and<lb />shipped by caring volunteers.?<lb /><lb />The Web site goes on to say,<lb /><lb />professor for the department of<lb />biology said, oITve seen this movie<lb />two times. The first time I saw the<lb />movie I was partly annoyed by it.<lb />I must admit, the second time it<lb />was a little more humorous. Folks<lb />probably gather there is one issue<lb />here, scientists teaching science is<lb />not going to solve the problem.?<lb /><lb />Wednesday Jan. 17 Randy<lb />Olson held a seminar in the Bate<lb />building at 4 p.m. to further dis-<lb />cuss the issues he addressed in his<lb />documentary.<lb /><lb />His main point was the criti-<lb />cism of communication for evolu-<lb />tion. He expressed his views by<lb />stating scientists do not convey<lb />their points effectively to the<lb />broader audience. He advocated<lb />the odumbing down of science.? He<lb />made a distinction between com-<lb />municating academically versus<lb />communicating broadly through<lb />ten fundamental commandments<lb /><lb />oGive 2 the Troops is a nonpartisan,<lb />non-political, patriotic organization<lb />aimed at supporting U.S. deployed<lb />and wounded troops in harm's way.<lb />We are managed by patriotic vol-<lb />unteers who ensure that deployed<lb />U.S. military members in all<lb />branches of service are supported<lb />with letters and care packages.?<lb /><lb />Give 2 the Troops is now<lb />focusing attention on ValentineTs<lb />packages with the theme of oWarm<lb />a TroopTs Heart.? For these pack-<lb />ages they are looking to collect<lb />Valentine cards and candies, warm<lb />socks, fleece throws, thermal<lb />shirts, hot chocolate, coffee, hand<lb />warmers, lotion and skin care<lb />products, Chapstick, toothpaste<lb />and toothbrushes.<lb /><lb />To include in their pack-<lb />ages they are also accepting<lb />new or ogently used? items<lb />such as magazines and books,<lb />CDs, DVDs, recreational items<lb />like board games, dart boards,<lb />softball equipment, golf equip-<lb />ment and fitness equipment.<lb /><lb />Monetary donations are also wel-<lb />come because shipping is not free for<lb />these packages. Volunteers are being<lb />sought out to help pack the boxes,<lb />which will be shipped out during<lb /><lb />-mid-January for arrival by Feb. 14.<lb /><lb />for communicating to an audience.<lb /><lb />Dr. Linda Wolfe, the chair-<lb />person of anthropology at ECU<lb />attended this seminar and was<lb />also a member of the panel after<lb />the viewing of the film. She said,<lb />oTTve enjoyed listening to his<lb />discussion. I agree working on<lb />better scientific communica-<lb />tion is something we all need<lb />to be doing.?<lb /><lb />Liz Hills, a biology graduate<lb />student said, oIf you're trained<lb />as a scientist, itTs a different<lb />mindset. ItTs more difficult to<lb />communicate to the world at<lb />large than the world of science.?<lb /><lb />Olson encourages other sci-<lb />entists to follow the example hé<lb />put forth in order for the general<lb />audience to be more interested in<lb />scientific topics.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />news@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />heart<lb /><lb />Give 2 the Troops also sends<lb />over boxes packed full of supplies<lb />to individual soldiers daily, all year<lb />round, so volunteers are always<lb />needed to help stuff boxes.<lb /><lb />They average 45 new troops<lb />each day signing up, so the demand<lb />is increasing tremendously.<lb /><lb />The number of troops being<lb />deployed overseas is steadily.<lb />increasing. The only prevention to<lb />hinder their ability to ship pack-<lb />ages is a lack of donations, both<lb />items and money. Any organiza-<lb />tion or individual who would like<lb />to volunteer are welcomed.<lb /><lb />Items for donation may be<lb />delivered to: The N.C. In<lb />a Gotham-like city, a terrible<lb />water shortage, caused by a<lb />20-year drought, has led to<lb />a government-enforced ban<lb />on private toilets. The citizens<lb />must use public amenities,<lb />regulated by a single malevo-<lb />lent company that profits by<lb />_ charging admission for one<lb />of humanityTs most basic<lb />needs. Amid the people, a<lb />hero decides heTs had enough,<lb />and plans a revolution to lead<lb />them all to freedom! Inspired<lb />by the works of Bertolt Brecht<lb />and Kurt Weill, Urinetown is<lb />an irreverently humorous satire<lb />in which no one is safe from<lb />scrutiny. <lb />Opin<lb /><lb />AFC pushes<lb /><lb />for league<lb />domination<lb /><lb />A semi-professional analysis of why<lb />the AFC is better than the NFC<lb /><lb />GREG KATSKI<lb />SPORTS EDITOR<lb /><lb />The American Football Conference owns the<lb />National Football Conference. This is no secret or<lb />huge revelation, although if you want to give me the<lb />credit, be my guest. NFC teams went a combined<lb />24-40 against their counterparts in the AFC this<lb />season, an on-going trend.<lb /><lb />Last year the NFC faired slightly better, going<lb />30-34 against the new league. In 2004, the NFC<lb /><lb />took a slap to the face from the AFC, going 20-44. :<lb /><lb />The most inept of all the NFC divisions against<lb />the AFC is the lowly North Division. Not exactly<lb />a shocker, since three of the four teams are now<lb />considered bottom-feeders. These teams have gone<lb />a combined 8-24 against the AFC over the past two<lb />seasons. Not even daaa Bears could withstand the<lb />powerhouses of the AFC.<lb /><lb />It all derives from the otrickle-down effect.? It<lb />starts in the front office with the owners, filters down<lb />to the coaches, and finally to the players.<lb /><lb />Case in point: The New York Giants ownership<lb />wanted Eli Manning so bad in the 2004 draft that<lb />they made a blockbuster trade with the San Diego<lb />Chargers. With the first overall pick, the Chargers<lb />drafted Eli Manning. Then with the fourth overall<lb />pick the Giants drafted Philip Rivers.<lb /><lb />The Chargers made a deal with the Giants,<lb />sending Manning to the Giants for Rivers, along<lb />with the Giants third round pick and first and fifth<lb />round picks in 2005.<lb /><lb />Looking back, itTs easy to see who got the better<lb />end of that deal. The Chargers took kicker Nate<lb />Kaeding with their third-round pick, and linebacker<lb />Shawne Merriman with their first-round pick in<lb />2005.<lb /><lb />Subsequently, Rivers has proved a formidable<lb />starting quarterback in his first year at the helm<lb />while Manning continues to struggle in his third<lb />year. On top of this, Merriman might be the most<lb />feared linebacker in the NFL, and Kaeding has four<lb />game winning field goals on the year.<lb /><lb />Smart owners pick good coaches, who find qual-<lb />ity players. The most successful teams this year have<lb />experienced coaches in charge.<lb /><lb />There are marquee coaches throughout the NFL,<lb />but the AFC is stacked with them. Bill Belichick,<lb />Brian Billick, Tony Dungy and Mike Shanahan<lb />have all won the Super Bowl. This list doesnTt even<lb />include Jeff Fisher and Marty Schottenheimer, who<lb />have both been to the Super Bowl.<lb /><lb />Stability at the head coaching position breeds<lb />success. This is evident in teams like the Broncos,<lb />Colts and of course the Patriots. Of the five NFC<lb />teams with new head coaches, only the New Orleans<lb />Saints had a winning season. The Saints were des-<lb />tined for greatness after they secured Reggie Bush<lb />and Drew Brees. Head Coach Sean Payton was<lb />presented with a favorable situation, and should be<lb />a lock for coach of the year.<lb /><lb />The other four NFC teams with new head<lb />coaches went a combined 25-39 this season. Players<lb />thrive on stability and camaraderie, which comes<lb />from the coaching staff.<lb /><lb />Quarterbacks reflect the personality of their<lb />coach on the field. The position is by far the most<lb />- important in football, and (dare I say?) any sport. Of<lb />the six AFC teams to make the playoffs, five have<lb />proven quarterbacks. "<lb /><lb />Peyton Manning and Tom Brady top the list,<lb />while Steve McNair, Trent Green and Chad Pen-<lb />nington have all carried their teams to the playoffs<lb />before. These quarterbacks have spent an average of<lb />nine and a half years in the league.<lb /><lb />Many teams in the NFC have young, inexpe-<lb />rienced quarterbacks at the helm. In two or three<lb />years, some of these quarterbacks will achieve great-<lb />ness. It is a growing process, and has been proven<lb />the only way to have stability and success.<lb /><lb />In the end, itTs not all about the quarterback. As<lb />the saying goes, odefense wins championships.? At<lb />the end of the regular season, seven out of the top<lb />10 defenses in the league belonged to AFC teams.<lb />The Baltimore Ravens headed up the list of oOverall<lb />Defensive Leaders.?<lb /><lb />Overall defense is ranked on a variety of statistics<lb />including yards per game allowed and average points<lb />per game allowed.<lb /><lb />Also ranked among the top 10 teams were New<lb />England and San Diego. These two clubs provide<lb />the most balance of offense and defense.<lb /><lb />The Patriots had the 11th ranked offense and<lb />sixth ranked defense during the regular season. The<lb />Chargers had the fourth ranked offense and 10th<lb />ranked defense.<lb /><lb />A high-powered offense is important, but a stout<lb />defense is even more so. This scenario was played<lb />out when New England went to San Diego and beat<lb />the Chargers by a: field goal. Five out of the top 10<lb />offenses are in the NFC, but none of these teams<lb />rank in the top 10 on defense.<lb /><lb />The only teams with any semblance of balance<lb />in the NFC are New Orleans (first in offense, 11th<lb />in defense), Philadelphia (second in offense, 15th<lb />in defense) and Chicago (15th in offense, fifth in<lb />defense). ItTs interesting to note that these are the<lb />three most successful teams in the NFC.<lb /><lb />If the NFC wants to catch up with the AFC<lb />and be considered on the same level, owners should<lb />take notice. The most successful team of this decade<lb />has been the New England Patriots.<lb /><lb />LetTs break down this Patriots team. The front<lb />office is usually successful in the draft, this year<lb />selecting star running back Laurence Maroney.<lb /><lb />They have used this approach instead of over-<lb />paying for free agents to build a solid nucleus of<lb />players.<lb /><lb />Bill Belichick has won the Super Bow] three times "<lb /><lb />and has the utmost respect from his players. Quar-<lb />terback Tom Brady is the oAmerican DreamT, a stable<lb />quarterback that doesnTt force the issue or gloat. And<lb />New EnglandTs defense is top-notch every year.<lb /><lb />So it really isnTt some big secret.<lb /><lb />{ Your daily dose of reality }<lb /><lb />THURSDAY JANUARY 18, 2007<lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />It makes me really happy to read Rants<lb />that arenTt about how much other<lb />people suck.<lb /><lb />PAGE A4.<lb /><lb />NEWS : UOUSTON FIRM OFFERS E-MAIL FROM BevONo<lb /><lb />THE GRAVE<lb /><lb />IM SORRY... From othe alcohol induced<lb />events that Facebook pictures prove happened,? to<lb />owhether or not Heidi is actually going to be pregnant in<lb />the next episode of MTV's oThe Hills.? And so, I often<lb />forget that thereTs actually intelligent life out there. So<lb /><lb />T what ifitTs not surrounding me on a daily basis. At least<lb /><lb />itTs said to exist, right?<lb /><lb />And, just when I thought the population of ECU<lb />was completely hopeless, my faith was restored Tuesday<lb />night, when unbeknownst to me, I stumbled across what<lb />must have been the formal meeting of oIntelligent Life:<lb />ECU Chapter? at Hendrix Theater in Mendenhall.<lb /><lb />Gathered, was an auditorium chock-full of students<lb />and faculty alike to watch the docu-film Flock of Dodos.<lb />Directed by Randy Olson, marine biologist-turned film-<lb />maker, the film takes on the controversy of the Darwin-<lb />ian Theory of Evolution versus the concept of Intelligent<lb />Design through humorous, casual interviews. After the<lb />84-minute film ended, there was a panel discussion filled<lb />with some of ECUTs finest professors, a professor who<lb />drove up from Wilmington and none other than the<lb />filmTs director, Randy Olson.<lb /><lb />Much to my surprise, the auditorium remained full<lb />as the panel responded to questions from eager students<lb />for an additional hour and a half. And, lo and behold,<lb />there actually seemed to be intelligent, concerned stu-<lb />dents out there who cared about more than the scripted-<lb />reality shows of MTV.<lb /><lb />DonTt get me wrong, by no means am I calling<lb />anyone at ECU unintelligent... you can do that for your-<lb />self, trust me, itTs easy enough. Rather, I saw a different<lb />sort of intelligence displayed"the kind that requires<lb />students to care about real world issues outside of the<lb />classroom and choose to talk about them without being<lb />encouraged by a professor. Something you just donTt see<lb />happen. everyday around here.<lb /><lb />Sure, it was only.a small percentage of the student<lb />body that went to the film, but that was more than<lb />enough for me. It proves to me that there are students<lb />who not only care, but also will show up to talk and<lb />learn about the bigger issues out there. For that reason,<lb />I encourage ECU to present us with more opportuni-<lb />ties to get out and broaden our horizons outside of the<lb />classroom. To present us with more chances to question<lb />the world around us, and.to help cultivate the growing<lb />need for a more active and informed student body.<lb /><lb />So, kudos to the Student Union and dozen or so<lb />departments that actually brought the movie to ECUTs<lb />campus. But, more than anything, hats off to the few<lb />hundred students that dared to be different and came out<lb />to prove they're more than just another flock of dodos<lb />walking around campus.<lb /><lb />Inside the head of<lb />George W. Bush<lb /><lb />BRIDGET TODD<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />I always know when someone is being insincere.<lb />Call it an internal lie detector, if you will. Last week<lb />when Bush addressed the nation, my internal lie detec-<lb />tor was going off the charts. His agenda was incredibly<lb />transparent and I could almost hear his inner monologue<lb />resonating throughout the speech. So I thought it would<lb />be fun to conjure up what I imagined Bush was think-<lb />ing. While the quotes and figures from CNN and The<lb />Washington Postare real, the rest is just satire. Like John<lb />SwiftTs 4 Modest Proposal or an episode of oSouth Park,?<lb />itTs supposed to be comical to show a point. George Bush<lb />isnTt the new staff writer for the East Carolinzan. ItTs just<lb />me. That being said, the following is what Bush might<lb />as well have been saying during his address:<lb /><lb />So, news of the surge of troops ITm sending to Iraq<lb />made it to the blogsphere. I was hoping to keep it hush-<lb />hush, but now those bloggers are blogging all about it, so<lb />I should probably say something. I guess I should go on<lb />TV and make a big speech about it, that way it looks like<lb />I was planning on informing the public all along. Now<lb />I know we've been in this war since 2003, but I think<lb />sending more troops will really turn things around.<lb />Never mind the some 20,000 American soldiers that have<lb />already died should juuuuust about doit. ItTs a good thing<lb />I banned the news from showing all those morbid flag-<lb />draped coffins. ItTs not like anyone will notice anyway.<lb />You know what they say, oout of sight, out of mind.?<lb /><lb />Hmmm. I really have to find a way to spin this<lb />one. Oh, I know! ITll play the blame-game! Ah, the oleT<lb /><lb />"standby. I'll say that I accept total responsibility for the<lb /><lb />situation in Iraq. That'll shut up all those abortion-get-<lb />ting, latte-drinking liberals. I think that will really make<lb />me look good. Not that this whole mess hasn't been my<lb />fault since the beginning. I mean"ITm the commander<lb />in chief"who else's fault would it be? But admitting it<lb />years later is a smart move. What do they call that when<lb />someone makes an empty statement of vague wrongdo-<lb />ings? Oh yeah: Lip service. I like that :phrase.<lb /><lb />This whole thing is getting kind of tricky. I even<lb />heard all my cronies are turning on me. According<lb />to CNN.com, Republican Senator Chuck Hagel said<lb /><lb />the 20,000 troops plan would be othe most dangerous<lb /><lb />foreign policy blunder in this country since Vietnam, if<lb />itTs carried out.? And heTs supposed to be my homeboy!<lb />WTF? And that Nancy Pelosi chick will not stop bad-<lb />mouthing my plan. I wish I could just be a silent token<lb />minority like my gal Condi. Well you know what? I<lb />donTt even care if other Republicans and Democrats<lb />have stopped supporting this war. I also donTt care that<lb />The Washington Post says oNearly three-quarters of<lb />Americans say the number of casualties in Iraq is unac-<lb />ceptable, while two-thirds say the U.S. military there is<lb />bogged down and nearly six in 10 say the war was not<lb />worth fighting.? Those numbers aren't so bad. Hell, I'm<lb />the man who called winning a presidential election by<lb />2.5 percent votes a omandate.?<lb /><lb />Sure, everyoneTs all upset now, but thereTs a new<lb />season of oAmerican Idol? starting up soon. ITm sure:<lb />everyone will focus on that until this whole thing just<lb />kind of blows over. Then I can go back to doing what a<lb />president should be doing: Taking vacations, pretending<lb />to be a cowboy and attaching myself to public interest<lb />stories. In the meantime, ITm going to try to rustle up<lb />another one of those oMission Accomplished? banners<lb />like the one from 2003. I wonder what we did with that<lb />thing.<lb /><lb /></p>

Some-<lb />times ITll wriggle an entire drawer off of its identical -<lb />wooden slats, and in the charged silence that comes<lb />with being alone in a large house, ITllT explore. What<lb />am I looking for: Old letters, photographs and even<lb />old receipts. Anything that fleshes out the story of the<lb />people | lived with for twenty years. J would be willing<lb />to bet I am not alone in these covert endeavors.<lb /><lb />For those who lack parents who spend inordi-<lb />nate amounts of time with dogs or at supermarkets,<lb />but would still like a chance to discover hidden<lb />family secrets, there is Allison BechdelTs Fun Home: A<lb /><lb />Family Tragicomedy.<lb /><lb />Reading her graphic novel is like pressing your<lb />nose up to another familyTs den window, eavesdropping<lb />on their dinner conversation, then rooting though all<lb />their stuff. Bechdel lovingly reconstructs significant<lb />elements of her family and personal life.<lb /><lb />These include the death of her emotionally absent<lb /><lb />A model walks the catwalk at the 2006 fashion show.<lb />|<lb /><lb />family drama<lb /><lb />Contributed image<lb /><lb />homosexual father, the day-to-day running of the<lb /><lb />family funeral home (nicknamed ofun home?), and<lb />discovering her own homosexuality. These events have<lb />a sizeable range and skip from hilarious and horrifying<lb /><lb />in a matter of panels.<lb /><lb />Things that should be gruesome, like the sudden<lb />death of her father or her first encounter with a naked<lb />corpse, are examined and questioned until they are<lb />rendered tender, humorous and above all human.<lb />Bechdel has a fantastic eye for the secret mechanics and<lb />language of family, intertwining the heartbreaking and<lb />the hopeful until they are indiscernible.<lb /><lb />The language of the Bechdel family is) clearly<lb />literature. Her book oozes with literary references.<lb /><lb />. Her father calls upon James Joyce and Oscar Wilde to<lb />illustrate his tension with his sexuality. Bechdel even<lb />discovers her own homosexuality through reading the<lb />likes of Anais Nin, Kate Millet and Collette. " :<lb /><lb />In the world of the BechdelTs, literature and<lb />sexuality are entwined"her father even gives<lb />books to the teenage boys he is trying to seduce.<lb />This reliance on literature is also demonstrated in<lb />BechdelTs narration. Though at times a bit ver-<lb /><lb />BechdelTs precision doesnTt end with language.<lb />Her drawing style is exact and specific; she rec-<lb />reates exact outfits and rooms with great detail.<lb />However, her lines are a bit sketchy. Her style is<lb />very much like Robert CrumbTs, with very meticu-<lb />lous drawings with a touch of wobble in the lines<lb />around them.<lb /><lb />Overall, Bechdel has created a work of art. Her<lb />book is just like an old drawer in that she recreates<lb />typed legal documents, photographs, handwritten<lb />letters and diary entries. These precious recollec-<lb />tions are relayed out of order, the way that memory<lb />works. Fun Home begins and ends with two of the<lb />most tender scenes: Balancing on her reclining<lb />fatherTs feet and holding her fatherTs neck as he<lb />swims with her on his back. Both are fond memories<lb />most children have of their fathers.<lb /><lb />All of the uncertainty, absence and despair that<lb />her father carries throughout the rest of the book<lb />are sandwiched between acts of affection. ThatTs<lb />what Bechdel illustrates best: That odd fusion of<lb />grief and love that we call family.<lb /><lb />bose, her commentary sharply illustrates thematic<lb /><lb />elements while also adding layers of meaning<lb /><lb />and symbolism.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />pulse@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Ignite Mindz brings the Psychological WarfareT<lb /><lb />ECU graduate to release<lb />new album<lb /><lb />JOHN BOSCO<lb />SENIOR WRITER<lb /><lb />A year and a half ago, ECU<lb />Communication graduate John<lb />Dixon began writing material for<lb />his new album Psychological Warfare.<lb /><lb />Dixon, who raps under the<lb />name Ignite Mindz, held positions<lb />at the campus radio station, WZMB<lb />91.3, as hip-hop DJ, hip-hop music<lb />director and production manager.<lb /><lb />oT tried to record a lot in the<lb />ECU studio, but those tracks<lb />sounded bad,?*said Dixon.<lb /><lb />oI wound up just re-recording<lb /><lb />everything again at my house, and<lb />I sent the tracks to get mixed and<lb />mastered.
