Moore said.<lb /><lb />Students can apply these hours<lb />to their clubs, organizations and<lb />classes if their professors will<lb />allow them to do so. The hours are<lb />kept on file in the volunteer center.<lb /><lb />According to Moore, this is<lb />about the fifth year that the vol-<lb />unteer center has sponsored the<lb />MLK Day Challenge. Another<lb />challenge is on the agenda for<lb />next year.<lb /><lb />Make a Difference Day, is the<lb />next event that the center will<lb />sponsor. This event is similar to<lb />MLK Day Challenge because it<lb />provides students with a choice of<lb />multiple volunteer projects.<lb /><lb />The difference in the two<lb />events is that transportation will<lb />be provided for the Make a Dif<lb />ference Day.<lb /><lb />That event was held last year<lb />to try to engage freshman students<lb />early on in volunteering in the com-<lb />munity. Every<lb /><lb />school has to be led by a well-<lb />trained, competent principal. And<lb />you haye to have the resources to<lb />supply whatever the teachers and<lb />principals come up with for academic<lb />programming,? In a Gotham-like<lb />city, a terrible water -short-<lb />age, caused by a 20-year<lb />draught, has led to a govern-<lb />ment-enforced ban on private<lb />toilets. The citizens must use<lb />public amenities, regulated<lb />by a single malevolent com-<lb />pany that profits by charging<lb />admission for one of human-<lb />ityTs most basic needs. Amid<lb />the people, a hero decides<lb />heTs had enough, and plans<lb />a revolution to lead them all<lb />to freedom! Inspired by the<lb />works of Bertolt Brecht and<lb />Kurt Weill, Urinetown is an<lb />irreverently humorous satire<lb />in which no one is safe from<lb />scrutiny. Praised for reinvigo-<lb />rating the very notion of what<lb />a musical could be, Urinetown<lb />catapults the comedic romp<lb />into the new millennium with<lb />its outrageous perspective,<lb />wickedly modern wit and<lb />sustained ability to produce<lb />gales of unbridled laughter.<lb />Visit theatre-dance.ecu.edu<lb />for more information. <lb />Opinion<lb /><lb />Stealing from<lb />the future<lb /><lb />The double standard of the Bill<lb />Gates Foundation<lb /><lb />JUSTIN SUMMERS<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Last week an article came out in the L4 Times<lb />that really grabbed my attention. This particular<lb />article investigated the investments of the Bill and<lb />Malinda Gates Foundation and dug up some rather<lb />striking information concerning their motiva-<lb />tions.<lb /><lb />The Bill and Malinda Gates Foundation is a<lb />philanthropy composed of enormous investments<lb />from Bill Gates and Warren Buffet, the second rich-<lb />est person in the world. In total, they have donated<lb />over 66 billion dollars in support of global health<lb />initiatives, improving US public education, and<lb />social welfare programs in the Pacific Northwest.<lb />Like most philanthropies, the Gates foundation uses<lb />its capital to invest in corporations and companies<lb />to generate a profit and insure the future of the<lb />foundation. From that, they donate roughly five<lb />percent of the foundations worth annually to avoid<lb />tax payment and achieve their initiatives. Last year,<lb /><lb />this five percent amount to 1.4 billion dollars in .<lb /><lb />donations and grants.<lb /><lb />I know you are thinking, what could be wrong<lb />with a foundation that donates billions of dollars<lb />every year to combat AIDS and improve educa-<lb />tion? To be truthful there is nothing wrong with<lb />the donations and other beneficial attributions from<lb />the foundation, the problem is their investment<lb />program.<lb /><lb />The LA Times discovered that while the Gates<lb />Foundation is investing their capital to make a<lb />profit, which in turn is going towards positive<lb />causes, the companies they have chosen to invest<lb />in are actually contributing to many of the health<lb />problems they are trying to combat.<lb /><lb />The LA Times uses a small town in Nigeria as<lb />the focal point of their article. This town, known as<lb />Cancer Valley to some, is plagued with AIDS and<lb />some of the worst respiratory problems in the world.<lb />In local schools, over 50 percent of the children have<lb />asthma and many die every year from respiratory<lb />complications. The majority of the health problems<lb />in the area can be contributed to local oil refiner-<lb />ies that spew burning gas and oil hundreds of feet<lb />in the air, clouding the sky with thick smoke. The<lb />gases that are emitted from these refineries contain<lb />toxic by-products such as benzene, mercury and<lb />chromium. These gases not only can cause cancer<lb />and respiratory illnesses, but also lower immunity<lb />to infections like polio. In addition to respiratory<lb />illness, the holes drilled to.extract oil later fill-with<lb />water becoming a breeding zone for mosquitoes<lb />and malaria. Also, these oil spills have clogged the<lb />rivers causing outbreak of cholera in local towns.<lb />In addition to the environmental impacts of the oil<lb />industry, oil workers in the Nigerian Delta are the<lb />main customers in red light districts in Nigeria and<lb />complicate an already beleaguered population with<lb />AIDS and teen pregnancy. The main refineries in<lb />the Delta are ENI, Royal Dutch Shell, Exxon Mobil<lb />Corp., Chevron Corp., and Total of France, all of<lb /><lb />- which are companies that the Gates Foundation has<lb /><lb />invested almost a half billion dollars in.<lb /><lb />By supporting these companies, the Gates<lb />foundation is contradicting its motives. Currently<lb />the Gates foundation is donating money to Nigeria<lb />to combat AIDS, polio, malaria and other health<lb />problems, health problems some would say are a<lb />result of the oil companies they profit from.<lb /><lb />The LA Times found that the Gates Foundation<lb />has invested 8.7 billion dollars in companies that are<lb /><lb />_ like these are counter to the foundationsT initiatives,<lb /><lb />questioning the real motives of their charity " profit<lb />or doing good for the world?<lb /><lb />When student<lb />sanitation stinks<lb /><lb />Dorm hygiene at its all time low<lb /><lb />JESSICA DUNLOW<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Summer school was awesome, I lived with my<lb />best friend in. Umstead Hall and everything was<lb />perfect. However, outside of our own personal room,<lb />the residence hall bathrooms were a total mess.<lb /><lb />It is optional at ECU to live in the uni-<lb />versity provided residence halls, but<lb />for those of us who choose to live in them,<lb />please learn to take care of our shared house.<lb /><lb />I have lived in the residence halls for<lb />two years and have seen something shame-<lb />ful occur in the bathrooms on a weekly basis.<lb /><lb />Human feces are smeared on the walls in the<lb />male showers and pee spilled all over the floors.<lb />You are grown men, hit the right hole. I can live<lb />without vomit in the sinks, on the walls, in the<lb />stalls and on the carpet in the public hallways.<lb /><lb />If you think that the girlsT floor would be<lb />better, think again. There isnTt much that can<lb />beat clogged toilets. Vomit in the showers is<lb />more popular amongst the women. When did it<lb />become OK to leave bodily fluids for all to see in<lb />public places?<lb /><lb />Parents pay around $2,000 for their students<lb />to have a place to live. We can choose not to<lb />clean and pick up after ourselves, but it is beyond<lb />housing servicesT job and training to clean after<lb />a bunch of slobs who do not care or love where<lb />they live.<lb /><lb />The residence halls are not our permanent<lb />homes, but that is not an excuse to not keep up the<lb />rooms for the future residents. Grow up. Respect<lb />the areas that everyone in the residence hall uses.<lb />For once, think about the others that reside and<lb />work in the dorms instead of just how convenient<lb />the free omaid? service is.<lb /><lb />{ Less talk, more action }<lb /><lb />WEDNESDAY JANUARY 17,2007 pace A3<lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />If there was a club for virgins | bet that<lb />after a few meetings, half of the club<lb />would have to stop going.<lb /><lb />[| STUDY FINDS PRESCHOOLERS ARE Too FAT(____"<lb /><lb />[OPAY Foe<lb />RECREATION WE'LL<lb />PLAY SOCCER ... And<lb />while the two shows spend their timeslot bringing<lb />humor to the headlines, not everyone is laughing.<lb />Many believe that Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert<lb />are corrupting todayTs youth, leaving them unin-<lb />formed about politics and uninformed about the<lb />media. Do these two comedians really leave their<lb />audience in the dark, or is there something more<lb />than meets the eye?<lb /><lb />A campaign has spread across the US, mostly<lb />by way of the Internet, to have a Stewart/Colbert<lb />office in 2008. By way of bumper stickers, T-shirts,<lb />and even a stewartcolbert08.com Web site, people<lb />everywhere are showing their support of the duo.<lb />According to an MSNBC interview with Jon Stewart,<lb />the campaign is for naught. The comedian stated that<lb />he has no intention of running for office, but says that<lb />the campaign is oa real sign of how sad people are?<lb />with the government. But do his supporters think the<lb />same way? Are they in real support of a Stewart/<lb />Colbert in 2008, or are they expressing discontent<lb />with the government?<lb /><lb />A similar question applies to the viewers of the<lb />show. Do they take oThe Daily Show? and oThe Colbert<lb />Report? as legitimate news sources, or as a: comedy<lb />show on a comedy channel? Well, this all depends on<lb />whether the two shows could be taken as a legitimate<lb />news source or not. According to research done by the<lb />University of Pennsylvania, during the 2004 elections,<lb />viewers who watched oThe Daily Show? were more<lb />informed about the election than those who watched<lb />other late-night talk shows, such as oDavid Letterman?<lb />and oJay Leno.? The research also showed that viewers<lb />of oJon Stewart? were more informed than some who<lb />watched oABC News,T CBS and NBC. :<lb /><lb />Personally, I see oThe Daily Show? and oThe<lb />Colbert Report? as a filter for news. They're quick,<lb />30-minute programs that get straight to the impor-<lb />tant news, while adding humor to it. So instead of<lb />wading through news about celebrity break-ups, or<lb />an ongoing fight between Donald Trump and Rosie<lb />O'Donnell, I get the big stories right away. Then, if<lb />the story interests me, I'll get on CNNTs Web site<lb />to get a detailed look. The two shows also report on<lb />subjects that other news programs normally wouldn't<lb />touch. If thereTs something important going on in<lb />the Senate, Stewart and Colbert will report on it,<lb />but they'll also mention the Senator whoTs doing a<lb />crossword puzzle on the Senate floor.<lb /><lb />Do oThe Daily Show? and oThe Colbert Report?<lb />corrupt the viewers when it comes to politics? That<lb />depends on your definition of corruption. They make<lb />their viewers more aware of international politics,<lb />while at the same time, making them more likely to<lb />question national politics. They ask the questions<lb />that need to be asked, but rarely give the entire story.<lb /><lb />. On their own, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert are<lb /><lb />harmless. They're comedians who poke fun at politics.<lb />The problem lies with those who donTt see them as<lb />comedians, but see them as political figureheads.<lb /><lb />=<lb /><lb />Sarah Bell<lb />Editor in Chief<lb /><lb />Greg Katski<lb />Sports Editor<lb /><lb />Claire Murpy<lb />News Editor<lb /><lb />Sarah Campbell<lb />Pulse Editor<lb /><lb />Elise Phillips<lb />Asst. After a<lb />pair of free throws by Franks, RiceTs<lb />Frazier connected on a three point<lb />play to get the Owls within eight<lb />once again, this time at 60-52 with<lb />nine minutes on the clock.<lb /><lb />After a two and a half minute<lb />scoring drought by both teams,<lb />a free throw and a three pointer<lb />by Watts cut the ECU lead to six<lb />with 6:10 on the clock. CochranTs<lb />free throwTs with 3:21 to play<lb />extended the Pirates lead to 11,<lb />69-58, and her layup at the 2:49<lb />mark gave ECU the 13 point lead,<lb /><lb />at 71-58. YoungTs free throws with ©<lb /><lb />a minute to play gave the Pirates<lb />their largest lead of the game, 15,<lb />at 73-58. ECU would cruise to the<lb />74-60 victory.<lb /><lb />RiceTs Frazier led all scor-<lb />ers with 21 points while Watts<lb />added 10. For ECU, Terry led the<lb />way with. 18 points, seven assists<lb />and eight rebounds. Cochran<lb />tallied a career-high in points<lb />and rebounds with 14 and 10 for<lb />her first career double-double.<lb />Young also scored in double fig-<lb />ures for ECU, with 13, adding a<lb />career-high eight assists and seven<lb />rebounds. Franks tallied a personal<lb />best nine points and four rebounds<lb />in 19 minutes off the bench.<lb /><lb />The Pirates, who were without<lb />Cherie Mills, Impris Manning and<lb />Alicia Person due to a team viola-<lb />tion, pulled down a season-high 55<lb />rebounds, including 23 offensive<lb />boards.<lb /><lb />ECU will hit the road for<lb />three straight road games,<lb />traveling to Birmingham, Ala.<lb />for a Thursday evening tilt at<lb />UAB. The Pirates will travel<lb />to Memphis to face the Tigers<lb />Saturday afternoon.<lb /><lb />ECU loses first<lb />home C-USA game<lb /><lb />Pirates have worst<lb />shooting night of<lb />season<lb /><lb />BENJAMIN LLOYD<lb />SENIOR WRITER<lb /><lb />Even at home the Pirate Bas-<lb />ketball team seems to struggle.<lb />Saturday nightTs loss against Rice,<lb />64-47, shows that the Pirates still<lb />have some growing up to do. Rice<lb />is now 8-7 overall and 2-0 in C-<lb />USA games while ECU is 5-10<lb />overall and now 0-2 in C-USA play.<lb /><lb />Rice dominated the first half<lb />of play only allowing ECU to<lb />shoot 16.1 percent from the floor.<lb />It wasnTt as though RiceTs defense<lb />was too much for the Pirates, but<lb />that ECU couldnTt hit an open<lb />shot. The Pirates went 5-31 in<lb />the first half and only scored 18<lb />points, mainly because of Senior<lb />Courtney Captain who put up 12<lb />points in the first half.<lb /><lb />Coach Ricky Stokes has said<lb />about the loss, oFor us to be suc-<lb />cessful, we are. going to have to<lb />have more than one guy to have<lb />a good shooting night. This is<lb />a young team trying to find its<lb />way. We'll have to continue to .<lb />work, and continue getting better.<lb />For the most part, I think we had<lb />some good shots, and we'll try to<lb />come back Wednesday.?<lb /><lb />Captain scored the PiratesT<lb />first 10 points and was one of only<lb />two Pirates to make a field goal in<lb />the first half. RiceTs Center Greg<lb />KillingTs lay-up started a 10-0<lb />spurt over a four-minute stretch<lb />snapping a 10-10 tie and giving<lb />the Owls a 10-point lead, 20-10,<lb />midway through the first half.<lb /><lb />During the first half ECU<lb />struggled while taking the ball<lb />in the lane and feeding it to their<lb />forwards. ECUTs big men only<lb />scored two points in the first<lb />half.<lb /><lb />With 3:16 remaining<lb />until half time, RiceTs Lorenzo<lb />Williams sank a pair of free:<lb />throws to push the Rice lead to<lb />16, 32-16.<lb /><lb />ECU definitely needed some<lb />pick me up at half time from<lb />Coach Stokes. Courtney Captain<lb />has said, oHe pretty much just<lb />told us to keep playing, because<lb />the last five minutes of the first<lb />half we played good D. He told us<lb />to just keep taking the shots and<lb />eventually they will fall.?<lb /><lb />The second half started with<lb />RiceTs Chris Hagan lay up to<lb />give Rice a 21-point lead. The<lb />tides quickly turned when<lb />Captain sank two 3-pointers<lb />and Junior Darrell Jenkins hit<lb />another on the next posses-<lb />sion to bring RiceTs lead to 14<lb />with 15:49 left in the game.<lb /><lb />Rice would then take the helm<lb />back and go on an 18-7 run to give<lb />the Owls a 25-point lead. ECUTs<lb />play in the second half was much<lb />better as they hit five more three<lb />pointers and got the ball inside to<lb />Gabe Blair and towards the end of<lb />the game to Taylor Gagnon, for<lb />14 points in the paint.<lb /><lb />ECUTs main concern for the<lb /><lb />»night on defense was stopping<lb /><lb />RiceTs Senior Morris Almond,<lb />who is known for his proficient<lb />shooting abilities and is the second<lb />leading scorer in the nation with<lb />28.8 points per game. During the<lb />game Almond went 5-15 from<lb />the floor and hit 5-7 from 3-point<lb />land, which game him 18 points on<lb />the night and he also pulled down<lb />10 rebounds for a double-double.<lb />RiceTs other dominate player was<lb />Guard Lorenzo Williams who put<lb />up 17 points at the close, had five<lb />assists, and two steals.<lb /><lb />ECUTs freshman forward John<lb />Fields pulled down 13 rebounds,<lb />although he didnTt score, his<lb />inside presence is starting to<lb />speak for itself. Junior Darrell<lb />Jenkins had _ six assists for the<lb />night and only six points.<lb /><lb />ECU had its lowest shoot-<lb />ing percent for the season with<lb />26.7 percent on the night. Senior<lb />Courtney Captain said after<lb />the game, oWe canTt just sit<lb />here and just dwell on the<lb />losses, because obviously you<lb />canTt get those back. So at<lb />twelve o'clock we just put those<lb />to bed and the next day just<lb />get ready for the next game.?<lb /><lb />Freshman guard James Dil-<lb />lard spoke about the loss and had<lb />to say, oWe have to take what<lb />worked in this game and apply it<lb />to the next game. We are always<lb />thinking about how to improve<lb />one game to the next.?<lb /><lb />ECUTs next game will be<lb />Wednesday, Jan. 15, at Minges<lb />Coliseum against Tulane. The<lb />tip-off will be at 7 p.m.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb /></p>
