Jones said.<lb /><lb />Jones is also using the book as<lb />part of the curriculum for a criminal<lb />justice history class, though the text<lb />is not required.<lb /><lb />He has been teaching at ECU<lb />for over 10 years, after spending<lb />time working in the penal system<lb />in Georgia before earning a master Ts<lb />and doctorate in criminal justice.<lb /><lb />The actual text took two<lb />years to complete, but Jones<lb />said that the book is the prod-<lb />uct of a lifetime Ts experience.<lb /><lb /> oAnytime you write a book, you<lb />call from all of your past experi-<lb />ences, ? Only the chief executive of a<lb />school Ts alumni association may join<lb />CAAE. Associate Vice Chancellor for<lb />Alumni Relations Paul J. Clifford will<lb />be ECU Ts representative in CAAE.<lb /><lb />In a news item posted on ECU Ts<lb />alumni association Web site, John<lb />Feudo, CAAE President and Associ-<lb />ate Vice President for Alumni Rela-<lb />tions at Boston College said, oCAAE<lb />is comprised of many of the leading<lb />alumni organizations in North<lb />America. We reach out to strong<lb />alumni offices with solid profes-<lb /><lb />sionals managing those programs.<lb />Paul J. After being denied for two<lb />years, the university Ts application<lb />was finally accepted. Clifford said<lb />he knows why.<lb /><lb /> oThere is a minimum criteria<lb />that. we were close to meeting in<lb /><lb />{<lb /><lb />the past, ? he said. Those criterion<lb />include having a staff of a least 10<lb />people, which the association now<lb />has, and having a budget of at least<lb />$1 million, at least half of which must<lb />be self-generated, through donations<lb />from private parties, for example.<lb /><lb />The East Carolina Alumni Asso-<lb />ciation, oexists to inform, involve and<lb />serve alumni in their lifelong asso-<lb />ciation with the university, ? Clifford<lb />said. There are over 120,000 alumni<lb />worldwide, many of which still keep<lb />up-to-date on university happenings,<lb />through an e-newsletter or its print<lb />counterpart.<lb /><lb />However, the association also<lb /><lb />tional curriculum designed to<lb />help obstetrics and gynecology<lb />professors teach women Ts health<lb />more effectively.<lb /><lb /> oI will be able to absorb the<lb />experience of many gifted educa-<lb />tors and clinicians and implement<lb />new and exciting teaching meth-<lb />ods into my course, ? said Nelson.<lb /><lb />The vigorous 15 month pro-<lb />gram is led by clinician/educators<lb />who represent leadership in educa-<lb />tion for APGO and five Ph.D. edu-<lb />cators; who are considered national<lb />leaders in medical education in the<lb />United States. As far as I am<lb />concerned, there is always a silver lining... If there wasn't, I'd<lb />be out of a job. OK, so you have already recognized that your<lb />friendship 1s a platonic one and you aren't trying to lure him<lb />into bed, or anything, so the easy part is over. The hard part is<lb />convincing the pinlfe end. There are several ways to go about<lb />doing this. You don Tt have to actually convince anyone, per<lb />se, but sometimes the medicine goes down smoother with a<lb />little sugar, know what I mean? Try finding out when youre<lb /><lb />poing to have to surrender him to his woman and when he<lb /><lb />as to be working or doing something else. Add those up<lb />and what Ts left is free time he can spend (hopefully) with you,<lb />doing whatever it is that made you such good friends. If this<lb />approach isn Tt working or he shirks out of chilling out with<lb />you, eee that the three of you go play a friendly game of<lb />racquetball at the rec. center or hit the badminton around or<lb />shoot hoops... If athletics isn Tt your thing, invite:them to a<lb />late lunch or something. Make it a semi-public affair so it Ts<lb />less personal. She has to get to know you better, and this is<lb />pretaly less threatening to her, and make sure you include<lb /><lb />er in conversations and such. It may be difficult for you and a<lb />bit awkward for everyone, but if she sees that your intentions<lb />are good and you and your friend are just that, no more,<lb />than she should calm down some. If that doesn Tt work or she<lb />never warms up to the idea, you'll have to sit down and have a<lb /><lb />serious chat with your friend, if he is to remain so. It Ts not your »<lb /><lb />a to tell her that she needs to stop being so possessive; it Ts<lb />is. Maybe<lb />you're flipping channels and you come across<lb />grainy reenactments of typing hands or grown<lb />men hunched at tables weeping. That can only<lb />mean one thing: You've stumbled -across another<lb />installment of one of America Ts highest rated prime<lb />time shows: oDateline Ts To Catch A Predator. ? The<lb />setup is always the same: Decoy from the vigilante<lb />group Perverted Justice, poses as a frisky minor<lb />in a chat room. Adult man engages in a sexually<lb />explicit chat with the decoy and agrees to meet in<lb />person. Man arrives to find not oSexyBaby4U, ? but<lb />(surprise!) Chris Hansen from oDateline ? NBC.<lb />At this point, Hansen usually delivers some clever<lb />zinger to the man: oNo hug for me? ? or oAm I not<lb />what you were expecting? ? The now confused<lb />man is stammering and apologetic, often times<lb />assuming Hansen is the girl Ts father. He is told, to<lb />sit, and Hansen reads excerpts from the sexually<lb />explicit chat logs. Hansen grills the man on his<lb />sexual history and why he chose to chat with a<lb />minor. Then, several minutes later, Hansen reveals<lb />that the man is on national television. Perhaps,<lb />now, the man thinks it Ts over. He gets up to walk<lb />back to his car, only to be arrested as soon as he Ts<lb />outside. The account is presented as a form of<lb />whole and instantly edifying gratification. This<lb />man is bad, and now his life is ruined, the end.<lb /><lb />Or is it? These men are likely guilty. They chat-<lb />ted with what they thought were minors, and now<lb />they are paying the price. But Hansen only shows the<lb />most racy experts of the chat logs. He doesn Tt show<lb />exactly how the two began chatting. Often times the<lb />men say the decoy messaged them first. Are these<lb />men being tricked, lured or even entrapped? No one<lb />knows. Perverted Justice doesn Tt even leave it open<lb />for debate by failing to disclose the full chat logs.<lb /><lb />Moreover, when Hansen greets the men, he<lb />doesn Tt tell them what-is going on until much<lb />later. Surely this is to maintain the taut drama<lb />the show is attempting to achieve, but is it really<lb />fair? Chris Hansen certainly has no legal jurisdic-<lb />tion over these men. If they don Tt want to answer<lb />any of Hansen Ts questions, they don Tt have to. But<lb />they aren Tt informed of this. Often times the men<lb />quickly apologize to Hansen then ask to leave only<lb />to have Hansen respond firmly that they cannot.<lb /><lb />Another concern is: that these accounts are<lb />televised. Everyone gets to tune in to watch the<lb />public humiliation and shame. People used to talk<lb />about oSeinfeld ? around the water cooler, now they<lb />can talk about the guy who showed up naked to<lb />what he though was a young boy Ts home. oDateline ?<lb />doesn Tt stick with the case long enough to show<lb />whether or not these men were convicted. Perhaps<lb />some are found innocent, but of course, oDateline ?<lb />doesn Tt show that part. Aftér all, it doesn Tt help the<lb />ratings. And even if they did, it would already be<lb />too late. Once associated with sexual misconduct<lb />on national television, there is no going back.<lb />This is all part of a growing ofrown campaign ?<lb />to get the public involved in the justice system.<lb />It certainly serves as a strong example to people<lb />considering talking to a minor online, but is it<lb />really acceptable? Guilty or innocent, these men Ts<lb />lives are ruined. So, is it really all that different?<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />ae ee er<lb /><lb />ry<lb />I<lb /><lb />i<lb />t<lb />I<lb />I<lb />Ls<lb /><lb />Sarah Bell<lb /><lb />Editor in Chief<lb />Claire Murpy Greg Katski<lb />News Editor Sports Editor<lb />Sarah Campbell Elise Phillips<lb />Pulse Editor Asst. However,<lb />no one ever said money would be<lb />readily available while you were<lb />in college. It Ts no secret that col-<lb />lege students are in debt up to<lb />their eyeballs. When factoring in<lb /><lb />academic loans and high. interest<lb /><lb />credit cards, its no wonder debt is<lb />so prevalent on college campuses.<lb /><lb />' The burning question on<lb />everyone's minds remains. Is there<lb />a way to become debt-free without<lb />having to sacrifice too much? The<lb />answer is yes; there are a few things<lb />that students can do to start dig-<lb />ging themselves out of debt now.<lb /><lb />' First, college is not the time<lb />to keep up expensive habits. Make<lb />a budget plan every pay period<lb />for each expense that you will<lb />have until the next pay period.<lb />For example, estimate your total<lb />cost for food, entertainment, rent,<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />MCT<lb /><lb />Never<lb />go half-<lb />heartedly<lb /><lb />into your<lb />goal-making<lb />and keeping<lb /><lb />process, set<lb />your mind to<lb />what it is you<lb />want to accom-<lb />plish. Know that ©<lb />you can and will<lb /><lb /> meet your goal, no ifs,<lb /><lb />ands or butts about it. With<lb /><lb />the right attitude and dedica-<lb />tion, it will be ten times easier to<lb />follow through with<lb />your own expectations.<lb /><lb />Secondly, do not set your-<lb />self up for failure. You should<lb />only set goals that can be<lb /><lb />Escape the debt trap<lb /><lb />hygiene products and other bills to<lb /><lb />better prepare yourself from blow-<lb />ing the money on luxury items.<lb />Secondly, if you are used to<lb />buying and doing things a certain<lb />way, look into a cheaper alterna-<lb />tive. For example, buy generic<lb />hygiene products and buy in bulk.<lb />Planning meals for the week,<lb />and finding cheap entertainment<lb />options are also a good way to cut<lb /><lb />back on spending. Having game<lb /><lb />nights with friends instead of 8<lb />going downtown, renting movies. 5<lb /><lb />instead of going to the movies and = s<lb /><lb />cooking a meal from food in the 5<lb />cabinet instead of going out every ?,?<lb />night can be fun without spending<lb />too much money. Cutting corners<lb />when possible can save big bucks<lb />by the end of the month.<lb /><lb />For those who have credit<lb />cards, paying above the minimum.<lb />payment, even if it is a small<lb />amount above the minimum, can<lb /><lb />' drastically decrease the amount<lb /><lb />of time it takes to pay off the card.<lb />Setting a monthly card limit for<lb />yourself can also help keep you<lb />from overspending.<lb /><lb />Another way to guarantee<lb />financial success is to save money.<lb /><lb />achieved gradually and in mod-<lb />eration. Rather than attempt-<lb />ing to give up something cold<lb /><lb />- turkey that is a big part of your<lb /><lb />daily routine, set a date that<lb />you will have given it up by.<lb />Gradually cut back and pace your-<lb />self'so that you will have reached<lb />your goal by some point in the year<lb />and not simply overnight. If you set<lb />too high of goals that you expect<lb />to achieve in no time, you are more<lb />likely to become discour-<lb />aged and simply give up on<lb />your resolution altogether.<lb /><lb />Another key to success is to<lb />keep track of the progress you<lb />are making towards your goal.<lb />Keep some sort of journal or chart<lb />that helps you to see a visual on<lb />how you are coming along. The<lb />visual representation will also<lb />help you to meet your goal quicker<lb />by making you more aware and<lb />accountable for your actions.<lb /><lb />If your goal is to lose 20<lb />pounds and you keep track of your<lb />daily diet, you will be more likely<lb />to eat healthier foods so that you<lb />aren Tt as ashamed when it comes<lb />to charting your progress.<lb /><lb />Limit how many resolu-<lb />tions you make for yourself. If<lb />you put too much on your plate,<lb />you will feel overwhelmed and<lb />end up forsaking them alto-<lb />gether. You should have no more<lb />than three resolutions which<lb />are all reasonable goals. Take<lb />y@ur goals one at a time and<lb />break large resolutions down<lb />into steps which can be achieved<lb />over time. By segmenting your<lb />hopes for your new year you are<lb /><lb />more likely to feel successful<lb />come December.<lb /><lb />Reward yourself when you have<lb />made substantial progress toward<lb /><lb />-your goal. Treat yourself somehow<lb /><lb />when you feel that you are nearing<lb />the end of your game plan. Set mile<lb />markers for yourself and have specific<lb />treats in mind for when you reach the<lb /><lb />desired point. Just as when we were<lb /><lb />little, we are more likely to do some-<lb />thing if we know there is a reward<lb />at the end.<lb /><lb />Your biggest asset in main-<lb />taining focus and drive toward<lb />your mark is the help.of others.<lb />Letting your friends and family<lb />know where you would like to be<lb />in a few months will ensure that<lb /><lb />you are not the only one who is<lb /><lb />keeping track of your progress.<lb /><lb />If your friends participate. in<lb />the same bad habits your're trying<lb />to kick, ask them to cut back<lb />when you're around or try to kick<lb />the habits with you. Either way,<lb />friends will keep you in line and<lb />encourage you when you<lb />are at the end of your rope.<lb /><lb />Keeping New Years resolu-<lb /><lb />tions is rarely an easy process.<lb /><lb />since we typically resolve to stop<lb />doing things that we really enjoy<lb />but aren Tt exactly good for us.<lb /><lb />If you follow these simple<lb />guidelines and tips, your chances<lb />for success are greatly increased.<lb />If you're reasonable, keep your eyes<lb /><lb />on the prize, and maintain a good.<lb /><lb />attitude, then you're certain to<lb />come out strong in the end.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />pulse@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Anatomy<lb />of the<lb /><lb />perfect<lb />attraction<lb /><lb />New Year,<lb />new dating material<lb /><lb /> JESSICA DUNLOW<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />New Years resolution: Do not<lb />fall for the same old junk. However, what traits are<lb />we looking for in these mysteri-<lb />ous people to give us what we<lb />want and need?<lb /><lb />Physical attraction is the<lb /><lb />first thing everyone looks at<lb /><lb />when observing a new possibility.<lb /><lb />. Therefore, obviously, a person<lb /><lb />needs to have that special vibe<lb />going on to grab your attention.<lb /><lb />However, do not let a person Ts<lb />physical attributes rule the game.<lb />Personality is imperative. If some-<lb />one looks fabulous, but they have<lb />absolutely nothing relevant to say<lb />they are not worth the time.<lb /><lb />A little creativity is an ideal<lb />trait. That special person makes<lb />you a simple meal just for alone<lb />time or they give you something<lb />they made for you. If someone<lb />is physically repulsive, but they<lb />manage to arrange a romantic,<lb />heartfelt date idea, then you<lb />should definitely give them a<lb />fighting chance.<lb /><lb />Morals are another attribute<lb />to discuss. Indeed,<lb />stay away from players, because<lb />even if they are Johnny Depp or<lb />Orlando Bloom look-alikes in the<lb />long run you will be crushed that<lb />you are not their. number one.<lb /><lb />Your special person also needs<lb />to have similar ideas of how the<lb />whole dating thing goes. Exclu-<lb />siveness, daily phone calls, weekly<lb />dates, etcetera. Alert! Watch out<lb />for the ostage-five clingers, ? if a<lb />person is already calling you six<lb />times a day and already wants to<lb />hang out every second of the day;<lb />you might need to rethink your<lb />decision..Generally you can find<lb />these clinging traits out in the<lb />first couple of days, especially if<lb />they already Facebook stalked<lb />you for your screen name, and<lb />continue to send you messages<lb />constantly. Stay away.<lb /><lb />Remember the past. If some-<lb />thing angered you when you were<lb />with.someone else, it is still going<lb />to bother you. If the person you<lb />are into is friends with your ex,<lb />avoid it. They are only going to<lb />remind you much more of the<lb />person you just got rid of.<lb /><lb />In addition, if someone has<lb /><lb />every opposite characteristic than.<lb /><lb />you... this is not a good thing.<lb />Honestly, what will you talk<lb />about? Considering the past, do<lb />not try to defy everything you<lb />like because one person screwed<lb />it up. =<lb /><lb />Go with your instincts and<lb />make 2007 the year of love. It can also bé a great<lb /><lb />resource when it comes time to pay<lb /><lb />back those student loans.<lb />Looking for alternatives to<lb /><lb />student loans can also improve<lb /><lb /> your financial future. Talk-<lb /><lb />ing to the financial aid advi-<lb />sors at ECU about grants and<lb />scholarships is a good idea for any<lb />student to consider.<lb /><lb />There are also hundreds of<lb />Web sites that offer a chance to<lb />apply for scholarships and grants.<lb />Check out sholarships.com, fast-<lb />web.com and finaid.org. Last year,<lb />millions of dollars went unclaimed<lb />in grants and scholarships.<lb /><lb />The money is out there; you just<lb /><lb />need to find it.<lb /><lb />Finally, if you hit a tough<lb />spot, ask for the money. Parents,<lb />grandparents and other relatives<lb />or friends know how it is to need<lb /><lb />money from time to time. Remem-<lb /><lb /> ber to thank them and promise<lb /><lb />payback if they ask. State was<lb />another tough loss.<lb /><lb />According to the Associated<lb />Press, John Fields said, oI feel like<lb />I am maturing as a player offen-<lb />sively. Now I feel like I Tm adding a<lb />scoring threat to my game. ?<lb /><lb />To beat the Golden Hur-<lb />ricane, ECU will need strong<lb />play from their two emerg-<lb />ing leaders. The Pirates defi-<lb />nitely have the talent to go up<lb />against a team of Tulsa's caliber.<lb /><lb />The Golden Hurricane might<lb /><lb />have a better out of conference -<lb /><lb />record than ECU, but each club is<lb />built similarly. Both teams are in<lb />a orebuilding ? period and are rela-<lb />tively young and inexperienced.<lb />Tulsa started three true fresh-<lb /><lb />man against<lb />Texas- Pan America,<lb />their last out of conference foe. In<lb />addition, Golden Hurricane Head<lb />Coach Doug Wojcik is in his<lb />second year at the helm.<lb /><lb />The Pirates hope to mirror<lb />the success that Tulsa is having<lb />with their young players. On thing<lb />that Ts apparent, is other coaches<lb />are starting to take notice of the<lb />untapped potential the ofresh<lb />faces ? have.<lb /><lb /> oEast Carolina has got a lot of<lb />young and athletic people, I Tm sure<lb />they will go through some aches<lb />and pains, but I think the future<lb />is bright, ? said North Carolina<lb />Central Head Coach Henry Dick-<lb />erson, according to the Associated<lb />Press.<lb /><lb />Tip-off for the game is set for<lb />8:05 p.m. The game will air live<lb />on CSTV.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Photo by Zach Sirkin<lb /><lb /> Pulsa<lb /><lb />Tulane:<lb /><lb />After Hurricane Katrina, the<lb />team was forced to relocate to<lb />College Station on the campus<lb />of Texas A&M; the team played<lb />four games in College Station,<lb />before returning to New Orleans<lb />on Dec. 24<lb /><lb />Tulsa:<lb /><lb />In all 28 games last year,<lb />Tulsa did not allow an opponent<lb />to shoot over 50 percent from<lb /><lb /> the field<lb /><lb />a<lb /><lb />UAB: 5<lb /><lb />New Head Coach Mike Davis<lb />takes over this year after being<lb />let go by Indiana; Davis led the<lb />Hoosiers to the postseason in five<lb />of his six years as coach, including<lb />a loss to Maryland in the national<lb />championship game in 2002<lb /><lb />UCF:<lb /><lb />In 2005-2006, the Golden<lb />Knights were the top three-point<lb />shooting squad in the league,<lb />making 36.5 percent of shot<lb />attempts taken from long-range<lb /><lb />SMU:<lb /><lb />New Head Coach.
