Wait. Isn??Tt it still January?<lb /><lb />What the hell happened to winter? I feel like we<lb />skipped right over it. This winter has been ridicu-<lb />lously warm and I??Tm not too psyched about it. The<lb />weather this winter has been roughly 20 degrees<lb />above average, setting records in the armpits of the<lb />globe, England and New Jersey. Thanks to El Nifio,<lb />or La Nifa, I don??Tt know, I can??Tt speak French. But<lb />thanks to them, we are sweating off our holiday<lb />hangovers instead of drinking them off next to a<lb />warm fire.<lb /><lb />For most people here at ECU, the warm winter<lb />conditions are a blessing. Ladies, you can go outside<lb />in your pink and neon green booty shorts and walk<lb />your dog, go downtown in your skimpiest of out-<lb />fits without freezing your buns off, even get a tan<lb />without dropping 20 beans at Tan??TN??TBed. Guys, we<lb />can play football and basketball outside and show<lb />off our physical superiority to the girls in pink and<lb />neon green booty shorts walking their dogs. Heck,<lb />what not to like about a warm winter?<lb /><lb />Well for me and the other folks like me I like<lb />cold weather. For me it??Ts nice to wake up in the<lb />morning dreading the thought of stepping out of<lb />my warm bed. Personally I like seeing my breath,<lb /><lb />cold for a little bit and I was happy not to sweat at<lb />work and I even had dreams of snowboarding over<lb />Christmas break. Christmas came, I bought a new<lb />jacket and boots, got off work for a couple of weeks<lb />and was all ready to go boarding, there was only<lb />one problem ??" no snow. Once again warm weather<lb />ruined my annual ski trip and now I??Tm back here<lb />broken and depressed.<lb /><lb />Mother Nature is not only screwing me but all<lb />the people who sell snow blowers and snow shovels<lb />are getting hosed too. Think about the CEOs of the<lb />poor oil companies that couldn't afford a Christmas<lb />this year because no one was using their heaters.<lb />What about the makers of chap stick and rock salt?<lb />It is obvious that a warm winter is horrible not just<lb />for me but the economy as well.<lb /><lb />Imagine a-world with no winter. There would be<lb />no snow men, snow ladies or snow angels. No more<lb />snow balls, snow forts or snow cones (OK maybe<lb />snow cones). We would go from fall to spring to<lb />summer, ladies you know what that means? No more<lb />cute furry snow boots! A frightening thought for<lb />everyone I??Tm sure.<lb /><lb />Without winter our economy, our wardrobes<lb />and our Christmas carols would be forever changed.<lb />Who would want to dream about a green Christ-<lb />mas? Where??Ts the fun in walking in a winter<lb />wonderland when you don??Tt have to worry about<lb />slipping on ice and busting your butt?<lb /><lb />??~The moral of the story is that cold winters are<lb />a necessary part of our lives, and those of you who<lb />are so thoroughly enjoying this warm weather<lb />should think twice when someone asks you, ??oMan,<lb />how about this weather???? |<lb /><lb />Need advice? Want answers? Just ask Jane.<lb /><lb />ake<lb /><lb />Dear Jane,<lb /><lb />I??Tm actually not one to read the opinion section in here, but I have been lately.<lb />I am concerned with the STD letters being written. I feel for all those that have<lb />had the burden placed upon them. The truth is, I too have genital herpes. I have<lb />only had sex with two people in my life. I only had one bad experience with<lb />it, and got it checked. Other than that, I have seen no signs of it. Still, it only<lb />takes.one test result. I did not contract it here at ECU, but I am finding that<lb />I??Tm still having trouble moving on from this problem. It is so true that people<lb />are stereotyped and labeled once ??othe secret is out.??? No one knows I have this,<lb />and no one will until I plan to be married. My fear is that I will never be able<lb />to find.a partner in my life. I feel ashamed and humiliated. I am a dedicated,<lb />hardworking, well-rounded, student, athlete, friend and genuine person. My.<lb />friends even crack jokes about Herpes and I laugh along with them to cover it<lb />up. I feel that I am not the only one out there experiencing this. I have faced<lb />the facts, and tried to ??omove on,??? but the fact is, I can??Tt. It??Ts a part of me, but not<lb />who I am. It seems that all everyone talks about is what to do about informing<lb />yourself of disease, and what it is. Nothing is said about how to live with it, or<lb />how to think about your life after realizing what has happened to you. You not<lb />only feel dirty, but also isolated, alone, fake. It took me a long time to get the<lb />strength not to cry every day. I often was in denial because something like this<lb />happened to me. Again, many people would be so shocked to know I have this,<lb />so I guess it just goes to show that STDs don??Tt discriminaté. My question is,<lb />how do I live with this, and how do I prepare myself to love again without being<lb />judged? Is it possible to find someone that will see past a lifelong mistake, and<lb />how do I approach relationships? Thanks for all you do, and it??Ts really therapeutic<lb /><lb />to get this question out finally, and possibly answered.<lb /><lb />Signed,<lb />Needs Some Support<lb /><lb />Dear Needs,<lb /><lb />I??Tm glad you've been reading the opinion section of the paper. We do our<lb />best to address all kinds of issues that arise in college life. Unfortunately, Sexu-<lb />ally Transmitted Diseases are one of those dominant issues. Since you cannot<lb />help what people will say, like you have already pointed out, you now need to<lb />worry more about how to live and love yourself and those that you may come<lb />to love throughout your life ??" especially those whom may be directly affected<lb />someday.<lb /><lb />If you haven't already, my first suggestion is that you contact ECU??Ts Center<lb />for Counseling and Student Development because they offer an open ear and<lb />a professional opinion especially to students for free. They are located on the<lb />ground floor of the Wright Building, where Wright Auditorium is, near Wright<lb />Plaza, and they??Tre online at ecu.edu/cs-studentlife/counselingcenter. Also, I'd<lb />like to take the time to recommend a-helpful Web site specifically aimed at<lb />those adapting to a new lifestyle due to having been infected with a STD. One<lb />is herpesonline.org/herpes_stories.html. From this site, you can read the stories<lb />of others afflicted with the same problem and how they got their lives back on<lb />track, and you can also navigate it to find links for everything from support<lb />groups to frequently asked questions and much more. There??Ts a great deal of<lb />literature out there to find that can give you much better answers than I, but I<lb />sincerely hope this helps. I can tell you that there are indeed people out there<lb />that can love you for the person you are. None of us are perfect, if you want to<lb />look at things objectively, we all have different kinds of flaws and imperfections.<lb />Learning to love yourself is the most valuable step you'll take in the road to<lb />recovery and future happiness. I urge you to try to first, be honest with yourself<lb /><lb />and then, honest with others, including future lovers. They do have a right to<lb />know. While this may<lb /><lb />be one of the requirements of a<lb /><lb />college education, going broke<lb />because of it is not.<lb /><lb />An obvious solution that<lb />many students try to take advan-<lb />tage of is buying used textbooks.<lb />The pre-highlighted and stained<lb />option may not be very glamorous<lb />but might save a few dollars. Of<lb />course, students who opt for used<lb />books need to shop early, as copies:<lb />are snatched up quickly.<lb /><lb />Another alternative is book<lb />sharing. During the first few days<lb />of class, students can make friends<lb /><lb />with a classmate and offer to split<lb />the cost of the text with them.<lb />This option isn??Tt-very convenient if<lb />the class requires a lot of reading,<lb />but it is a definite money-saver.<lb />Possibly the best money-<lb />saving tool for college students is<lb />the Internet and the assorted Web<lb />sites that offer used textbooks for<lb />great prices. :<lb />While some students migh<lb />be apprehensive about making<lb />purchases online, most sites<lb />have a seller rating system, book<lb /><lb />condition scale and very secure<lb />purchasing networks.<lb /><lb />There are many book-selling<lb />sites to choose from but a few<lb />stand out from the rest when it<lb />comes to dependency, decency<lb />and ease of use.<lb /><lb />Amazon.com is a popular<lb />book-buying-bandwagon that<lb />many of you have already taken<lb />advantage of. Emer FoleyTs free throw<lb />extended the lead to three with<lb />less than 30 seconds on the clock.<lb /><lb />Kristen Chaney was fouled<lb />on the ensuing play and she made<lb />both free throws to put the Golden<lb />Eagles up by five with 20 seconds<lb />left in the game. Slack hit a three<lb />pointer with 7.6 seconds left to<lb />bring the Pirates within 4, 63-<lb />59. ECU was not able to even the<lb />score as Southern Miss pulled<lb />away with the victory 65-59.<lb /><lb />Southern Miss was staggering<lb />from the charity stripe, scoring 25<lb />points, shooting 86.2 percent from<lb />the line, while the Pirates only<lb /><lb />- made 7-12 from the free throw line.<lb /><lb />Sunday's game against UCF<lb /><lb />_ proved to be a different story for<lb /><lb />ECUTs Women Basketball team.<lb />ECU dominated with the fast<lb />break scoring 16 points against<lb />the Golden Knights, which<lb />took them. to a 62-46 victory at<lb />Minges Coliseum.<lb /><lb />UCF dominated the first half<lb />allowing ECU to shoot only 26.5<lb />percent from the floor, while<lb />they shot 38.2 percent. Divi-<lb />sion II opponent Chowan (5-9),<lb />coupled with a healthy John<lb />Fields, proved to be just the cure<lb />for the ailing Pirates.<lb /><lb />After dominating for most of<lb />the second half, ECU cruised toa<lb />68-50 victory, The win gives the<lb />Pirates some renewed confidence<lb />heading into C-USA. ECU is 3-1<lb />all time versus Chowan, and has<lb />won 22 straight games against<lb />Division II opponents.<lb /><lb />The Pirates built their lead<lb />on a series of runs. ECU went<lb />down by three to start the game,<lb />but answered with an 8-0 run.<lb />After holding a 12-10 lead, ECU<lb /><lb />went on a 15-6 run to take an<lb /><lb />11-point lead with 6:50 remain-<lb /><lb />ing in the first half. The Pirates<lb /><lb />carried a nine-point lead into<lb />halftime. :<lb /><lb />Chowan came out with energy<lb />to open the second half, cutting<lb />the ECU lead to six.<lb /><lb />This would be the closest the<lb />Hawks got to the Pirates in the<lb />second half though.<lb /><lb />_ ECU took momentum back<lb />with an 11-2 run to go up 48-33.<lb />The lead would swell to as many<lb />as. 21, with the final margin of<lb />victory at 18.<lb /><lb />Head Coach Ricky Stokes<lb />thought that his teamTs play<lb />inside the paint was the biggest<lb />factor in the win.<lb /><lb />oWe wanted to try to get the<lb />ball down inside, and we did a<lb />better job of that in the second<lb />half,? said Stokes. oWe definitely<lb />have some more things to work<lb />on, but it. was nice to see both<lb />freshman post players get a<lb />double-double.?<lb /><lb />John Fields, who had missed<lb />the last three games due to<lb />shoulder injury, returned to<lb />action against Chowan. The 6-9<lb />freshman from Fayetteville, N.C.<lb />had the best game of his young<lb />career. Fields led all scorers with<lb /><lb />oSometimes I had to catch my<lb />breath. Nothing can simulate the<lb />game speed. The coaches did a<lb />good job on bringing me out and<lb />giving me breaks.?<lb /><lb />Gabe Blair, the oother? fresh-<lb />man post player, completed his<lb />second double-double of the<lb />season. He finished with. 10<lb />points and 14 rebounds.<lb /><lb />Four of the starting five<lb />Pirates reached double figures,<lb />led by the two freshmen. Start-<lb />ing guards Darrell Jenkins and<lb />Jeremy Ingram complemented<lb />the freshmen duo nicely. The<lb />lethal backcourt combined for 23<lb />points, with Jenkins scoring 13<lb />and Ingram adding 10.<lb /><lb />' The Pirates also moved the<lb />ball around well and were cred-<lb /><lb />ited with 23 assists on 25 made<lb /><lb />field goals. Starting point guard<lb /><lb />- Jenkins was the catalyst for<lb /><lb />offensive execution, dishing out<lb />a game-high, seven assists.<lb />Stokes seemed relieved, but<lb />not satisfied, that his team got a<lb />win after losing seven straight.<lb />oNaturally, we are excited<lb /><lb />about the win and glad to be<lb /><lb />in the winning column,? said<lb />Stokes. oI donTt know if we played<lb />extremely well at times, but give<lb />the team a lot of credit; it was<lb />enough to earn the win.?<lb /><lb />Blair reflected: his coachTs<lb />demeanor.<lb /><lb />oYou learn a lot from losing.<lb />I donTt like to learn too much<lb />[about losing] but I learned a<lb />whole lot from this seven game<lb />losing streak. At first it just feels<lb />good to win again. Winning<lb />cures a lot,T said Blair.<lb /><lb />The win means a lot to the<lb />Pirates as they headinto C-USA play<lb />on Wednesday night against Tulsa.<lb /><lb />Blair thinks that the team<lb />can pick up the win on the road.<lb />oAny confidence is good confi-<lb />dence,? said Blair. oWe should be<lb />ready to get a Conference-USA<lb />win on the road hopefully.?<lb /><lb />The Pirates match-up on the<lb />road at Tulsa is set for an 8:05<lb />p.m. tip-off.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />rrell Gordy<lb /><lb />e<lb /><lb />© 14 points and grabbed a career<lb />best, 11 rebounds to finish with<lb />8 his first double-double.<lb /><lb />Fields credited the coaches<lb /><lb />Phot<lb /><lb />for his' strong performance.<lb /><lb />Se Gas:<lb /><lb />Fast CAROLINA<lb /><lb />ab<lb />ah<lb />ak<lb />Donate Plasma o<lb />and earn up to $170/mo<lb />Last month, we paid out $33,035 to 734<lb />good people.<lb />DCI Biologicals is always paying out this<lb />We kind of cash.
