energy efficient windows and<lb/>
updated laboratories and offices.<lb/>
Renovation of the building<lb/>
began in February 2004 after<lb/>
Hudson Bros, won the bid for<lb/>
the contract in November 2003.<lb/>
Demolition of the building<lb/>
began in 2002.<lb/>
Steve Atkinson, project man-<lb/>
ager of ECU'S Facilities Engineer-<lb/>
ing and Architectural Services,<lb/>
said the most daunting task<lb/>
during renovation of the build-<lb/>
ing was installing new equipment<lb/>
for the updated labs and working<lb/>
through the concrete pillars.<lb/>
He said the difficulty will<lb/>
pay off when the new building<lb/>
Is completed.<lb/>
"It has everything from before<lb/>
and more said Atkinson.<lb/>
Flanagan will be used by<lb/>
a variety of different depart-<lb/>
ments including geology, coastal<lb/>
resources management, anthro-<lb/>
pology and archaeology. It will<lb/>
also be the temporary home of<lb/>
the financial aid services because<lb/>
of a new renovation project of the<lb/>
Old Cafeteria Complex, which<lb/>
will begin in the near future.<lb/>
With the geology depart-<lb/>
ment moving into Flanagan, it<lb/>
will retain some of its history<lb/>
since it was used primarily as a<lb/>
science building throughout its<lb/>
history before the renovation of<lb/>
the building.<lb/>
The total cost of the project<lb/>
was $13.9 million, which came<lb/>
from bond revenue.<lb/>
Included in the cost of the<lb/>
project were the expenses of<lb/>
demolition, design, new equip-<lb/>
ment and furniture.<lb/>
Atkinson is currently in the<lb/>
process of moving the offices of a<lb/>
variety of different departments.<lb/>
"I'm getting together a<lb/>
moving package of all the depart-<lb/>
ments that are going into the<lb/>
new building Atkinson said.<lb/>
Once this step is completed,<lb/>
Atkinson said a bidding process<lb/>
will take place between moving<lb/>
companies to determine who will<lb/>
be moving all the furniture and<lb/>
equipment into the building.<lb/>
The design of the building<lb/>
was drawn up by a partnership of<lb/>
BJLES and BJAC, the engineering<lb/>
work was done by Newcumbe<lb/>
Boyd and the civil work was done<lb/>
by Kimley-Horn.<lb/>
The Flanagan building is<lb/>
located in between the Bate<lb/>
building and the Student Health<lb/>
Services building.<lb/>

ing their bags to head home while others will<lb/>
simply be taking a much-needed break.<lb/>
Regardless, some things always remain the<lb/>
same. An entire segment of the current student<lb/>
population will no longer be considered stu-<lb/>
dents at ECU, but forever known as alumni.<lb/>
TEC would like to take the opportunity to<lb/>
congratulate those graduating seniors who<lb/>
have contributed to this university in one way<lb/>
or another.<lb/>
We wish you the best of luck in your future<lb/>
endeavors and may the education that you<lb/>
received here guide you through your career<lb/>
path as well as life.<lb/>
To think the university has changed so much<lb/>
this past year. A new athletic director was hired,<lb/>
Head Coach John Thompson was forced<lb/>
to resign and Skip Holtz was hired to take<lb/>
his place. Construction littered the campus,<lb/>
bringing renovations and a better ECU to<lb/>
Greenville.<lb/>
As German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche<lb/>
once said, "What doesn't kill us makes us stron-<lb/>
ger Although the future of the ECU community<lb/>
is unsure, we do believe that past blunders will<lb/>
only help to make our university a stronger,<lb/>
more reputable environment.<lb/>
Over the past year, TEC has also experienced<lb/>
many changes. We have worked hard to bring<lb/>
you the most relevant and timely news pos-<lb/>
sible. Our campus coverage has increased<lb/>
along with the quality of our work. Just as the<lb/>
university continues to change and grow, so<lb/>
does our paper.<lb/>
However, the quality of a student newspaper<lb/>
is only as good as the students deem it to be.<lb/>
Whenever you read something that makes you<lb/>
upset or helps you relate, we encourage you to<lb/>
voice your opinion to us, whether it be through<lb/>
a pirate rant, a letter to the editor or through an<lb/>
employment application at TEC.<lb/>
Yes, it has been an amazing year. So much<lb/>
has changed and yet we have come back to a<lb/>
common place - commencement. Congratula-<lb/>
tions, graduates.<lb/>

Christmas cannot come fast enough<lb/>
Let us return to the true<lb/>
meaning of the season<lb/>
PETER KALAJIAN<lb/>
STAFF WRITER<lb/>
Something happened to me the<lb/>
other day, and I was very curious to<lb/>
conclude whether the problem was<lb/>
with me, or if some of my fellow<lb/>
academia had experienced the same<lb/>
phenomenon. The incident itself was<lb/>
small and innocuous, something that<lb/>
could easily have been overlooked, but<lb/>
I was so mind-numbingly bored with<lb/>
my studies at that particular moment<lb/>
that I noticed it, quite distinctly.<lb/>
I was sitting in the library, strug-<lb/>
gling mightily to maintain focus on<lb/>
what I was doing and I looked at my<lb/>
watch, something I do so often at this<lb/>
point in my life I should be able to tell<lb/>
the time internally. Right then, it hap-<lb/>
pened. Now, this may sound strange,<lb/>
even unbelievable, but the minute hand<lb/>
on my watch actually went backward.<lb/>
It was as if time was passing so slowly<lb/>
that just to taunt me, time momentarily<lb/>
' reversed. I have no idea if it even hap-<lb/>
pened, but it is a phenomenon which<lb/>
has plagued me ever since I was in<lb/>
school and could look forward to one,<lb/>
shining, glorious moment: Christmas<lb/>
Day. After the little mix-up with the<lb/>
time, I sealed myself to calmly complete<lb/>
my assigned tasks and move myself<lb/>
that much closer to Dec. 25, at approxi-<lb/>
mately 10 a.m. in the morning.<lb/>
Christmas is a fascinating holiday,<lb/>
from every angle. A day of holiness<lb/>
for Christians around the world, a day<lb/>
of cigar smoking and money count-<lb/>
ing for corporate executives and pine<lb/>
tree farmers around the country and<lb/>
generally a day of good cheer for<lb/>
everyone. But there are some serious<lb/>
concerns.<lb/>
My lovely girlfriend, who is about<lb/>
to make this Christmas one of my hap-<lb/>
piest ever, recently told me something I<lb/>
found both alarming and highly under-<lb/>
standable. She hates Christmas. My<lb/>
response was instinctive, "The hell you<lb/>
say, my love but she was completely<lb/>
serious.<lb/>
Some people associate the holidays<lb/>
with family gatherings, that black<lb/>
sheep,uncle who somehow keeps<lb/>
getting invited to dinner and always<lb/>
drinks too much eggnog or your obnox-<lb/>
ious cousins you are only subjected to<lb/>
once a year. Others, with the joy of<lb/>
giving and that good old Christmas<lb/>
feeling. But there is a large portion of<lb/>
this nation who thinks of Christmas in<lb/>
different terms. To these people, Christ-<lb/>
mas can be a time of great depression,<lb/>
cold weather and bad traffic. Christmas<lb/>
has become such an ingrained part of<lb/>
pop culture that the emphasis has been,<lb/>
for some time, commerce and money.<lb/>
Businesses all over this nation salivate<lb/>
at the very mention of the words,<lb/>
"Christmas season not because they<lb/>
can't wait to get home from the office<lb/>
and spend time with their kids, but<lb/>
because they are fantasizing about how<lb/>
much money they will be able to pocket<lb/>
from the American public.<lb/>
I am not a religious person, quite<lb/>
the contrary, but I certainly recognize<lb/>
the significance of the holiday for those<lb/>
people who do consider themselves<lb/>
Christians. I would love to see one of<lb/>
two possible events take place - either<lb/>
we refocus the whole idea of Christmas<lb/>
away from useless gifts and expensive<lb/>
bobbles and toward some level of<lb/>
human compassion, or the entire coun-<lb/>
try should worship the Christian God<lb/>
like there is no tomorrow. Those were<lb/>
the original ideas, and that is what we<lb/>
need to get back to.<lb/>
Now, I have no intention, today or<lb/>
any day, of worshipping along Chris-<lb/>
tian lines, nor do 1 imagine it would<lb/>
be possible to gather the entire nation<lb/>
for one day of prayer, so regretfully,<lb/>
I must reject "worship,the Christian<lb/>
God like there is no tomorrow" on its<lb/>
very face.<lb/>
That leaves us only one option.<lb/>
Let us, as a people, return to what<lb/>
Christmas should be. If you happen<lb/>
to walk past a homeless person this<lb/>
holiday season, no matter what your<lb/>
Republican instincts may tell you,<lb/>
leave them a dollar or give them<lb/>
some food.<lb/>
Instead of buying gifts for everyone,<lb/>
paint them a portrait or write them a<lb/>
poem (no, you do not have to be a poet<lb/>
to choose this option). Do something<lb/>
that says, "I love you and am think-<lb/>
ing about you all the time instead<lb/>
of, "man, that line at Circuit City was<lb/>
really long and this gift was extremely<lb/>
expensive<lb/>
Say "Merry Christmas" to frazzled<lb/>
shop keepers and apologize if you bump<lb/>
into someone. Your contributions may<lb/>
help all of those people out there who<lb/>
hate Christmas come to their senses.<lb/>
Make them forget about the unpleas-<lb/>
antness that can accompany the holi-<lb/>
days and remember the joy. With that,<lb/>
you have made a difference. For myself,<lb/>
I wish just one thing this Christmas<lb/>
season. You may want that expensive<lb/>
DVD player or new Playstation game,<lb/>
but me, I require but one small morsel:<lb/>
Peace on Earth and good will toward<lb/>
men. It may be a bit lofty, but with<lb/>
your help, I think we can pull it off,<lb/>
together. All other considerations aside,<lb/>
being with "mi Vida" and not being in<lb/>
school can never be a bad thing. Merry<lb/>
Christmas.<lb/>
In My Opinion<lb/>
Raising minimum wage would be morally right to do<lb/>
KRT ? The minimum wage vic-<lb/>
tories in Florida and Nevada are a<lb/>
political neon sign blinking brightly<lb/>
at Democrats.<lb/>
Although these two states favored<lb/>
President Bush on Nov. 2, voters over-<lb/>
whelmingly approved ballot measures<lb/>
to raise the minimum wage by one<lb/>
dollar in both states - to $6.15 an hour.<lb/>
In Florida, even though Bush beat<lb/>
Sen. John Kerry by 381,000 votes, voters<lb/>
favored the minimum-wage Increase by<lb/>
3.1 million votes - a 71 percent to 29<lb/>
percent margin.<lb/>
In Nevada, Bush narrowly beat<lb/>
Kerry by 21,500 votes, but citizens<lb/>
backed the wage boost by 293,328 votes<lb/>
- a 68 percent to 32 percent margin.<lb/>
Many middle-class voters supported<lb/>
the wage boost.<lb/>
What's more, the measures won<lb/>
in every county in both states. For<lb/>
example, in conservative Escambia<lb/>
and Santa Rosa counties in the Florida<lb/>
Panhandle, where military bases and<lb/>
retired military veterans dominate the<lb/>
political culture, more than two-thirds<lb/>
of voters favored the wage boost.<lb/>
Surprisingly, Kerry, who supported<lb/>
raising the federal minimum wage to $7<lb/>
an hour, ignored the issue during his<lb/>
campaign in Florida, which could have<lb/>
helped him gain more votes.<lb/>
It is imperative that Democrats<lb/>
start a nationwide debate that frames<lb/>
economic justice as a moral issue. Not<lb/>
only would this be the right thing to<lb/>
do, it could also be a winning electoral<lb/>
issue. This could help Democrats beat<lb/>
vulnerable Republicans in key Senate<lb/>
and congressional races in 2006.<lb/>
By doing so, they might not only<lb/>
increase turnout among the urban poor<lb/>
but also reach some of the church-going<lb/>
white Protestants who live barely above<lb/>
the poverty line but give their votes<lb/>
to Republicans.<lb/>
Lefi put the president and his con-<lb/>
gressional allies, who gave the richest<lb/>
Americans a huge tax break, in the<lb/>
position of explaining how a nurse's<lb/>
aide with two kids can raise a family<lb/>
on $5.15 per hour or why a worker<lb/>
in a poultry plant doesn't deserve a<lb/>
wage boost.<lb/>
The conventional wisdom says<lb/>
that Bush won a second term by<lb/>
defending the moral values derived<lb/>
from traditional religious teachings.<lb/>
But many major religious denomina-<lb/>
tions support raising the minimum<lb/>
wage. The U.S. Conference of Catho-<lb/>
lic Bishops says that Catholic social<lb/>
teaching regards work as a reflection<lb/>
of our human dignity, and that pov-<lb/>
erty wages are an affront to Individual<lb/>
self-respect.<lb/>
Congress, which has given itself a<lb/>
cost-of-living pay raise for the last five<lb/>
years in a row, has allowed the federal<lb/>
minimum wage to lose its purchasing<lb/>
power. Minimum-wage workers today<lb/>
are worse off now than they have been<lb/>
in decades. The last increase In the fed-<lb/>
eral minimum wage (to $5.15) was in<lb/>
1997. That figure is the equivalent to a<lb/>
full-time salary of $10,700 a year.<lb/>
At its peak in 1968, the minimum<lb/>
wage was worth the equivalent of more<lb/>
than $7 an hour today. That was also<lb/>
the last year that the minimum wage<lb/>
was above the nation's poverty line.<lb/>
If the federal minimum wage were<lb/>
increased to just $7 an hour, at least<lb/>
7.4 million workers would receive a<lb/>
wage boost.<lb/>
If the minimum wage were pegged<lb/>
at $9.50, which is the federal poverty<lb/>
standard, millions more would be lifted<lb/>
out of poverty.<lb/>
The largest group of beneficiaries<lb/>
would be children, whose parents<lb/>
would have more money for rent, food,<lb/>
clothing and other basic necessities.<lb/>
Business leaders claim that raising<lb/>
the minimum wage will destroy jobs and<lb/>
hurt small businesses. But the evidence<lb/>
- based on studies of the effects of past<lb/>
increases in the federal and state mini-<lb/>
mum-wage levels - shows otherwise.<lb/>
In fact, many employers would<lb/>
actually gain by absorbing the increase<lb/>
through decreased absenteeism, lower<lb/>
recruiting and training costs, higher<lb/>
productivity and increased worker<lb/>
morale.<lb/>
And because the working poor<lb/>
spend most of what they earn, every<lb/>
penny of a potential minimum-wage<lb/>
increase would go back Into the econ-<lb/>
omy, increasing consumer demand.<lb/>
Pirate Rants<lb/>
Why do so many Pirates have<lb/>
to rant about alcohol? Nobody<lb/>
likes to hire an alcoholic, so<lb/>
choose wisely - graduation isn't<lb/>
that far off.<lb/>
Airlines need to get more<lb/>
organized during the holidays.<lb/>
Either that, or they need to make<lb/>
some bigger airplanes for those<lb/>
busy times. The tremendous<lb/>
back up of flight delays is not<lb/>
satisfactory.<lb/>
I see a lot of faculty members<lb/>
having end-of-semester parties<lb/>
in faculty lounges. Hey, we pay<lb/>
your salaries, bring us some deli-<lb/>
cious treats.<lb/>
How many times can one<lb/>
female fix her ponytail in a<lb/>
45-minute class? Endless. What<lb/>
is the point of this obsessive-<lb/>
compulsive behavior of taking<lb/>
the rubber band off, putting it<lb/>
on, fixing your bangs, taking the<lb/>
rubber band off, putting it on,<lb/>
fixing the bangs again? It drives<lb/>
me crazy especially when I sit<lb/>
behind you and your dander falls<lb/>
all over my desk.<lb/>
For the love of God, stop<lb/>
volunteering to bring green bean<lb/>
casserole to the departmental<lb/>
holiday parties. The mess is nasty.<lb/>
Undercooked beans, dumped on<lb/>
canned fried onions, and drip-<lb/>
ping in cream of mushroom soup,<lb/>
just stop.<lb/>
It seems every time my study<lb/>
group and I are looking for a<lb/>
group study room in Joyner, half<lb/>
of the rooms are occupied by<lb/>
only one person. You don't need<lb/>
a whole room to yourself - be<lb/>
respectful. And to make things<lb/>
worse, I've seen people sleeping<lb/>
in study room many times. It<lb/>
is a "Group Study Room" and<lb/>
is intended for groups who are<lb/>
awake.<lb/>
Thank you TEC, for keep-<lb/>
ing up the sexist attitudes in<lb/>
today's society. I'm talking about<lb/>
the column in Dec. 7 issue asking<lb/>
students whether we think Skip<lb/>
Holtz is a good fit for our uni-<lb/>
versity. You only asked male<lb/>
students for their opinion. What?<lb/>
Are lady Pirates not allowed<lb/>
to have an opinion on the<lb/>
coaching staff, or sports for that<lb/>
matter? While I know most of<lb/>
us don't care, others of us really<lb/>
do. And by the way, I think Skip<lb/>
Holtz will do an excellent job.<lb/>
Go Pirates<lb/>
This rant is in reference to<lb/>
the person who had something<lb/>
to say about those of us who are<lb/>
still wearing sandals. I'll talk to<lb/>
you like I talk to the first grad-<lb/>
ers I am interning with. Is it<lb/>
hurting you? I think not, so get<lb/>
over it. I happen to like open-toe<lb/>
shoes and enjoy showing off my<lb/>
manicured toes. So if I choose to<lb/>
do this when it is cold outside,<lb/>
then it wil be my feet freezing,<lb/>
not yours.<lb/>
Today we salute you, stressed<lb/>
out college student during exam<lb/>
week. As you sit in your lonely<lb/>
cubicle in the library, doped up<lb/>
on Starbucks and Adderall, you<lb/>
think to yourself, "am I ever<lb/>
going to need to know this stuff<lb/>
in life?" The distractions are<lb/>
tempting, and you have suddenly<lb/>
diagnosed yourself with ADD,<lb/>
along with advanced schizophre-<lb/>
nia with involuntary narcissistic<lb/>
rage. I'm sure by now you know<lb/>
exactly what everyone is doing<lb/>
because you have checked your<lb/>
buddy list 800 times. Christmas<lb/>
break is just days away, and<lb/>
your Prozac prescription will<lb/>
be in tomorrow. So crack open<lb/>
an ice cold Bud Light after that<lb/>
last exam, because for most of<lb/>
us, Christmas will be spent in<lb/>
rehab.<lb/>
If you want to complain<lb/>
about the shortcomings of TEC,<lb/>
go and get an application and<lb/>
work there yourself.<lb/>
School is almost over and I've<lb/>
almost finished exams, for once,<lb/>
there is absolutely nothing to<lb/>
rant about - life is good.<lb/>
To the ranter who told me<lb/>
to go back up north: I'm from<lb/>
further south than this state<lb/>
(Georgia) and it's a beanie, NOT<lb/>
a toboggan.<lb/>

Strange name<lb/>

Hollywood this year<lb/>
KYLE BILLINGS<lb/>
STAFF WRITER<lb/>
Actors have always been<lb/>
known for their ability to create<lb/>
and innovate certain characters<lb/>
that capture focus and attention.<lb/>
A trend among Hollywood's elite<lb/>
unveils the apparent transition<lb/>
from the stage to the choosing<lb/>
of a baby name. These names<lb/>
certainly do attract focus and<lb/>
discussion. Recently, one of the<lb/>
most beloved actresses of our<lb/>
time, Julia Roberts, with hubby<lb/>
Danny Moder, celebrated the<lb/>
birth of twins Phinnaeus Walter<lb/>
and Hazel Patricia. Actors David<lb/>
Arquette and Courtney Cox<lb/>
made waves after naming their<lb/>
daughter Coco Riley. Pamela<lb/>
Remond Satran, co-author of<lb/>
eight baby-naming books, told<lb/>
USA Today that, "Like Madonna<lb/>
or Oprah, there is a feeling in<lb/>
that community that to have a<lb/>
singular name is to be a star The<lb/>
Moders and the Arquettes are not<lb/>
alone in the strange and unusual<lb/>
baby name department.<lb/>
The unique and unusual<lb/>
names are highly fashionable<lb/>
these days, with most celebrities<lb/>
often opting for something that<lb/>
stands out. Will Ferrell and wife<lb/>
Viveca Paulin go "old school"<lb/>
in naming their son Magnus.<lb/>
Other names include: Piper Maru<lb/>
(Gillian Anderson and Clyde<lb/>

Enzo (Patricia Arquette and Paul<lb/>
Rossi), Ireland (Kim Basingerand<lb/>
Alec Baldwin), Sonora Rose and<lb/>
Calico Dashiell (Alice Cooper<lb/>
and Sheryl), Lily-Rose Melody<lb/>
(Johnny Depp and Vanessa Para-<lb/>

undoubtedly belongs to Mia<lb/>
Farrow for a lifetime of oddities,<lb/>
whose children's names include<lb/>
the boys: Isaiah, Gabriel Wilk,<lb/>
Matthew Phineas, Sascha Villiers,<lb/>

Moses Amadeus. Her girls bear (in<lb/>
the truest sense of the word) the<lb/>

Greatest hits, greatest misses of year<lb/>
Rock albums soared in<lb/>
year for of ups, downs<lb/>
KRISTIN MURNANE<lb/>
STAFF WRITER<lb/>
With many artists lacking<lb/>
originality, time or band mem-<lb/>
bers, 2004 proved to be the year<lb/>
of the Greatest Hits collections.<lb/>
Bands such as Creed, 311, Pearl<lb/>
Jam, Korn, Marilyn Manson<lb/>
and Everclear have all released<lb/>
albums of the sort in the last 12<lb/>
months and many of these are<lb/>
still grazing the top of the rock<lb/>
charts at the year's end. This was<lb/>
also the time where the quantity<lb/>
of albums sold didn't necessarily<lb/>
equal musical quality.<lb/>
Let us begin with U2's latest<lb/>
release How to Dismantle an Atomic<lb/>
Bomb. U2 is a legendary rock band<lb/>
that has always been familiar with<lb/>
the top spot on the music charts.<lb/>
Their 2000 release All That You<lb/>
Can't Leave Behind was one of the<lb/>
band's greatest achievements,<lb/>
earning them a Grammy, but their<lb/>
new release shows no such great-<lb/>
ness. Although once again at the<lb/>
number one spot on Billboard's<lb/>
charts, selling over 840,000 copies<lb/>
in the first week of sales, Bono<lb/>
doesn't exactly show musical<lb/>
genius through the album's first<lb/>
single, "Vertigo With lyrics that<lb/>
go "Uno, dos, tres, catorce which<lb/>
translates to "One, two, three,<lb/>
fourteen in English for those<lb/>
who are not familiar with Spanish,<lb/>
followed by Bono saying the word<lb/>
"yeah" about ten times in a row,<lb/>
this wouldn't exactly qualify as<lb/>
outstanding songwriting.<lb/>
On a higher note, pop-punk<lb/>
rockers Green Day made a much<lb/>
welcomed return to the music<lb/>
scene with their release American<lb/>
Idiot. Although this is their most<lb/>
politically charged recording to<lb/>
date (even more so than their<lb/>
previous release, Warning), Green<lb/>
Day still has the same in-your-<lb/>
face style that has placed them<lb/>
at the top of the punk rock world<lb/>
for over a decade. This self-pro-<lb/>
claimed "polished punk opera" is<lb/>
a creative mix of varying tempo<lb/>
changes, unique melodies, and<lb/>
contains a general theme preach-<lb/>
ing that people should learn to<lb/>
think for themselves.<lb/>
Other musical highs came<lb/>
from Goth legends, The Cure<lb/>
and emo-punk rockers, Taking<lb/>
Back Sunday. The Cure's self-<lb/>
titled release showed that Robert<lb/>
Smith is still as passionate about<lb/>
music as he was over 20 years ago.<lb/>
Although their single "The End<lb/>
of the World" is arguably one of<lb/>
the worst songs on the album,<lb/>
they delivered with "Lost<lb/>
"Labyrinth" and the bouncy "(I<lb/>
Don't Know What's Going) On<lb/>
Taking Back Sunday's<lb/>
sophomore release Where You<lb/>
Want to Be is an impressive<lb/>
follow-up to their 2002 album,<lb/>
Tell All Your Friends. After singer-<lb/>
guitarist John Nolan and bassist<lb/>
Shaun Cooper left the band,<lb/>
many feared the end of TBS<lb/>
altogether. With the addition<lb/>
of Fred Mascherino and Matt<lb/>
Rubano, their more mature musi-<lb/>
cal style is a perfect match for<lb/>
front-man Adam Lazzara. The<lb/>
first single off the album, "A<lb/>
Decade Under the Influence"<lb/>
was instantly a fan favorite as it<lb/>
became frequently seen on MTV's<lb/>
after school show "Total Request<lb/>
Live Lazzara has once again<lb/>
put his soul on the line for all<lb/>
to see, and although this record<lb/>
does have its share of ups and<lb/>
downs, this shows a successful<lb/>
new beginning for the New York<lb/>
rockers.<lb/>
In 2004, more TRL familiar<lb/>
pop-punk bands Sum 41, Simple<lb/>
Plan, Good Charlotte and New<lb/>
Found Glory released new albums<lb/>
as well.<lb/>
What will 2005 have in store<lb/>
for rock fans? Look for new<lb/>
releases from hardcoreemo band<lb/>

Hottest movies of 2004,<lb/>
giant blockbusters,<lb/>
star-studded sequels<lb/>
LISA TUMBARELLO<lb/>
SENIOR WRITER<lb/>
Not every movie that hit<lb/>
the big screen this year was<lb/>
a sequel, but they sure man-<lb/>
aged to infest the box office<lb/>
anyway. 2004 cinema was a<lb/>
year of hard criticism, high<lb/>
grosses and big surprises from<lb/>
small movies.<lb/>
First and foremost was the<lb/>
take over of summer sequels.<lb/>
Four of the top 10 grossing<lb/>
movies for 2004 are sequels.<lb/>
Shrek 2 and Spider-Man 2<lb/>
respectively rank first and<lb/>
second on the top 10 list.<lb/>
Other sequels, Harry Potter<lb/>
and the Prisoner of Azkaban<lb/>
and The Bourne Supremacy<lb/>
also ranked in the top 10 for<lb/>
2004.<lb/>
Shrek 2 was this year's<lb/>
heavy hitter grossing $441<lb/>
million in the United States<lb/>
alone. People all over the<lb/>
world just couldn't get enough<lb/>
of the donkey-toting-big-<lb/>
green ogre - perhaps that's<lb/>
why it grossed over $849<lb/>
million at box offices around<lb/>
the world. DreamWorks hit a<lb/>
home run in 2001 with their<lb/>
release of Shrek which ranked<lb/>
third at box offices across the<lb/>
United States.<lb/>
Spider-Man 2, produced<lb/>
by Sony, was able to hold its<lb/>
own among deranged octo-<lb/>
pus machines and giving up<lb/>
the power of the web pro-<lb/>
duction. Although not able<lb/>
to outshine its predecessor<lb/>
Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2 was<lb/>
still able to fly high at the<lb/>
box office grossing $373 mil-<lb/>
lion in the United States and<lb/>
$772 million at box offices<lb/>
around the world.<lb/>
Harry Potter was able to<lb/>
do a bit of magic at the box<lb/>
office yet again. J.K. Rowling's<lb/>
imaginative children's tale of<lb/>
wizardry experiences was back<lb/>
in its third Installment on the<lb/>
big screen. Harry Potter and<lb/>
the Prisoner of Azkaban ranked<lb/>
fourth on the top 10 list and<lb/>
managed to rake in $249<lb/>
million at United States box<lb/>
offices and over $786 million<lb/>
world-wide.<lb/>
The Bourne Supremacy, our<lb/>
final sequel gracing the top 10<lb/>
list, brought audiences back<lb/>
to the heart-racing-action-<lb/>
packed life of Jason Bourne,<lb/>
former assassin. This second<lb/>
installment of thrills grossed<lb/>
over $175 million at United<lb/>
States box offices.<lb/>
Although these sequels are<lb/>
not some of the top grossing<lb/>
movies of 2004, The Whole Ten<lb/>
Yards, Kill Bill: Vol. 2, Chroni-<lb/>
cles ofRiddick and Bridget Jones<lb/>
Diary 2: The Edge of Reason,<lb/>
they all equally contributed to<lb/>
the sequel craze of 2004.<lb/>
In addition to all the second<lb/>
servings of cinema this year,<lb/>
movie goers plates were also<lb/>
packed full of heaping side<lb/>
dishes of blockbuster favor-<lb/>
ites. Drama, animation and<lb/>
action blockbusters topped<lb/>
the charts this year.<lb/>
Perhaps the biggest sur-<lb/>
prise of the year was the<lb/>
unexpected success of direc-<lb/>
tor Mel Gibson's controversial<lb/>
portrayal of the crucifixion<lb/>
of Christ in, The Passion of<lb/>
the Christ.<lb/>
Mounds of negative pub-<lb/>
licity fueled the public's<lb/>
curiosity about all the hype.<lb/>
America's response made The<lb/>
Passion of the Christ the third<lb/>
most grossing movie of 2004.<lb/>
In the United States, Passion<lb/>
took in $370 million and<lb/>
grossed nearly $605 million<lb/>
worldwide.<lb/>
Another controversial<lb/>
film of 2004 includes Fahren-<lb/>
heit 911. Michael Moore was<lb/>
back to his usual antics this<lb/>
time taking aim at the Bush<lb/>
Administration and the war<lb/>
in Iraq. The documentary<lb/>
drew audiences from both<lb/>
sides of the spectrum.<lb/>
This year's Memorial Day<lb/>
weekend action-thriller block-<lb/>
buster, The Day After Tomor-<lb/>
row, was jam-packed with<lb/>
world-ending natural disaster<lb/>
fun. Those that managed to<lb/>
survive the earth shattering<lb/>
storms contributed to the $196<lb/>
million that the movie earned<lb/>
at United States box offices.<lb/>
The recently released Disney-<lb/>
Pixar film, The Incredibles has<lb/>
already soared at the box office.<lb/>
Disney-Pixar has been respon-<lb/>
sible for other box-office-bust-<lb/>
ing pictures such as Toy Story,<lb/>
Toy Story 2, A Bug's Life, Monsters<lb/>
Inc. and last year mega-hit,<lb/>
Finding Nemo. So far this year,<lb/>
The Incredibles is ranked fifth on<lb/>
the top 10-grossing list having<lb/>
already taken in over $214<lb/>
million in the United States. Since<lb/>
the movie is still in release at<lb/>
box-offices across the<lb/>
country, it's likely it will surpass<lb/>

Good enough for TV, but is it good enough for you?<lb/>
Fall television shows<lb/>
ANGEL GONZALEZ<lb/>
STAFF WRITER<lb/>
This year's fall line up was<lb/>
almost just like any other: New<lb/>
reality shows, new game shows<lb/>
to be syndicated on PaxTV and<lb/>
FX when finished, new shows<lb/>
wanting to be reality shows but<lb/>
are scripted, and of course the<lb/>
occasional perverted adult car-<lb/>
toon put on Network TV.<lb/>
Most of these shows are<lb/>
always mediocre at best, yet a<lb/>
lot of them tend to make it to a<lb/>
second or third season, some of<lb/>
them don't even make it through<lb/>
the first season. Sometimes it's<lb/>
the network's fault for putting a<lb/>
great show on at the wrong time,<lb/>
causing cancellations.<lb/>
There are always, as well,<lb/>
some shows that are pretty good<lb/>
and have some sort of potential<lb/>
to succeed. While "Friends" is no<lb/>
longer showing new episodes, its<lb/>
NBC spin-off, "Joey featuring<lb/>
Matt LeBlanc, is carrying on the<lb/>
"Friends" tradition.<lb/>
When "Friends" ended, "Joey"<lb/>
ended up taking its timeslot,<lb/>
Thursdaysat 8 p.m only to receive<lb/>
the same fan base in ratings.<lb/>
The vague premise of the<lb/>
show: Joey goes to Hollywood<lb/>
after his original show ends, to<lb/>
pursue an acting career while<lb/>
meeting up with his sister and<lb/>
her 20-year old son. All of these<lb/>
elements leave the show open to<lb/>
many possibilities.<lb/>
So what action show can pos-<lb/>
sibly be so great and not feature<lb/>
sex-crazed fat-guy police officers?<lb/>
Better yet, show graphic depic-<lb/>
tions explaining why the dead<lb/>
guy actually killed his neighbor<lb/>
next door. Wait there is one,<lb/>
ABC's "Lost<lb/>
Apparently, this show has<lb/>
uninjured, demographically<lb/>
perfect stars that crash land their<lb/>
airliner on a deserted island and<lb/>
go all sci-fi by avoiding a people-<lb/>
eating monster, then go all issue-<lb/>
based by adding minorities pre-<lb/>
judging other minorities. Then<lb/>
just when the cliched plot gets so<lb/>
intense, there's a plot twist. And<lb/>
the bad guy just so obviously hap-<lb/>
pens to be the handsome, scruffy-<lb/>
looking chain smoker.<lb/>
In the reality show depart-<lb/>
ment, animation, the proper term<lb/>
for cartoons not for kids, spoofs<lb/>
tend to take the reign over this<lb/>
ever-growing genre of Primetime<lb/>
TV. And who would have thought<lb/>
that "Blind Date" would evolve<lb/>
into "Joe Millionaire" and "The<lb/>
Bachelor<lb/>
Comedy Central's "Drawn<lb/>
Together" makes fun of other<lb/>
shows so badly, that critics unani-<lb/>
mously gave the show terrible<lb/>
reviews, as did its viewers. Yet,<lb/>
something compels us every week<lb/>
to want to know what happened<lb/>
in last-week's episode.<lb/>
Definitely controversial,<lb/>
overly absurd and definitely<lb/>
funny when watched around the<lb/>
right group of people, this show<lb/>
definitely can go both ways of<lb/>
being cancelled or making it to a<lb/>
second season.<lb/>
If Hollywood is to make some-<lb/>
thing totally new and original<lb/>
instead of an old subject with a<lb/>
new concept, they had best get<lb/>
on the ball. Lackluster new shows<lb/>
seem to have been losing a loyal<lb/>
network audience with repetitive<lb/>
shows they have already seen.<lb/>
If these shows continue to<lb/>
bring in the ratings and the<lb/>
money, this country will defi-<lb/>
nitely have lost its sense of cre-<lb/>
ativity on Primetime television.<lb/>

hits that can stand up on their<lb/>
own. 2004 has been a year when<lb/>
I new artists have ventured into<lb/>
uncharted territory and old<lb/>
favorites have reinvented them-<lb/>
selves, R&B has become a force<lb/>
alongside pop and rap and is<lb/>
riding on the shoulders of some<lb/>
talented singers.<lb/>
Usher made his Confessions<lb/>
this year and dominated the<lb/>
charts for the past 37 weeks<lb/>
holding steady in the top 10.<lb/>
Destiny's Child reconstituted<lb/>
and reinvented themselves with<lb/>
their new album Destiny Fulfilled.<lb/>
The veteran group is making its<lb/>
way, this time with the help of<lb/>
hip-hop artists.<lb/>
"American Idol" has, surpris-<lb/>
ingly, profoundly affected the<lb/>
&B charts. The introduction of<lb/>
both Ruben Studdard with his<lb/>
album Need an Angel and this<lb/>
year's winner Fantasia with her<lb/>
album Free Yourself has made the<lb/>
show a potential stop for many<lb/>
up and coming R&B vocalists.<lb/>
Alicia Keys continued to be<lb/>
a shining star in the world of<lb/>
R&B and music In general with<lb/>
her sophomore album Diary of<lb/>
Alicia Keys. Her latest video for<lb/>
the single "Karma" shows how<lb/>
she has become a worldwide<lb/>
phenomenon. Possibly her talent<lb/>
can elevate R&B music to the<lb/>
artistry and appreciation reserved<lb/>
for other more "established"<lb/>
genres.<lb/>
The inclusion of Ray Charles'<lb/>
new album Genius Love Company<lb/>
and many of his own works on<lb/>
the soundtrack from the move<lb/>
Ray on R&BHip-IIop charts<lb/>
seems a bit odd, but the qual-<lb/>
ity of the music begs it to be<lb/>
included somewhere so if R&B<lb/>
is the category then these have<lb/>
to be two of the premiere R&B<lb/>
works of 2004.<lb/>
New artists blazing trails<lb/>
include Akon, who's new album<lb/>
Trouble attempts to mix hip-hop<lb/>
experiences with melodic R&B.<lb/>
Akon's first single "Locked Up<lb/>
featuring rapper Styles P made<lb/>
a statement that was heard for<lb/>
several weeks. John Legend<lb/>
introduced himself alongside<lb/>
Kanye West and Slum Village on<lb/>
the track "Selfish His debut<lb/>
album Get Lifted looks like it<lb/>
may be another unique spot In a<lb/>
cookie-cutter world.<lb/>

Sox Slay<lb/>
Bambino<lb/>
Boston finally<lb/>
reverses the curse<lb/>
ROBERT LEONARD<lb/>
STAFF WRITER<lb/>
Normally when I play<lb/>
poker with the boys, the TV<lb/>
Is )ust on - no one really pays<lb/>
attention to it. But on Oct.<lb/>
27 at 11:14 p.m. of this year,<lb/>
the Cards weren't being dealt<lb/>
- they were getting beat.<lb/>
Everyone at the table turned<lb/>
to watch a moment that will<lb/>
be replayed over and over In<lb/>
every Boston fan's mind. And<lb/>
this time, it won't be a ground<lb/>
ball dribbling through Bill<lb/>
Buckner's legs.<lb/>
Instead, it was Keith Foulke<lb/>
who fittingly fielded a ground<lb/>
ball and threw Edger Renterla<lb/>
out at first to close out one of<lb/>
the most memorable playoff<lb/>
tuns in sports history.<lb/>
Not only was this the<lb/>
last play of the 2004 World<lb/>
Series, but also it ended the<lb/>
famous "curse of the Bam-<lb/>
bino Finally, after 86 years,<lb/>
the Boston Red Sox were world<lb/>
champs again. The magical<lb/>
moment took place in homes<lb/>
across the country, especially<lb/>
In New York.<lb/>
It must have been hard for<lb/>
New York fans to watch the<lb/>
game that night but their pain<lb/>
was small in comparison to<lb/>
Red Sox maniacs. The Yankees<lb/>
had dominated the Sox for the<lb/>
first three games of the ALCS<lb/>
and much the past 86 years.<lb/>
The "Curse of the Bam-<lb/>
bino" started when Babe Ruth<lb/>
was traded from the Red Sox<lb/>
to the Yankees In 1918. The<lb/>
two bitter rivals would be<lb/>
linked by this single trade for<lb/>
what seemed an eternity.<lb/>
After losing the 2003<lb/>
World Series, the Yankees<lb/>
were determined to get back<lb/>
on top of the baseball world.<lb/>
They signed ace Kevin Brown.<lb/>
They picked up Gary Shef-<lb/>
field from free agency. After<lb/>
it looked like Alex Rodriguez<lb/>
was going to the Red Sox,<lb/>
the Yankees made the trade<lb/>
for him.<lb/>
Everything was going the ,<lb/>
way of the Yankees. Their<lb/>
batting order looked like the<lb/>
American League All-Star<lb/>
Team, and it almost was.<lb/>
Every- night, pitchers from<lb/>
around the league would<lb/>
have to face the likes of A-<lb/>
Rod, Derek Jeter, Gary Shef-<lb/>
field, Bernle Williams, Jason<lb/>
Giambi, Hideki Matsui and<lb/>
Jorge Posada - one after the<lb/>
other. Over and over.<lb/>
It looked like the curse<lb/>
would continue to the 87th<lb/>
year after the Yankees grabbed<lb/>
A-Rod. But the Red Sox had<lb/>
something up their sleeves.<lb/>
In a trade with the Diamond-<lb/>
backs, the Red Sox were able<lb/>
to get Cy Young winner Curt<lb/>
Schilling. While the Sox never<lb/>
admitted it, everyone knew he<lb/>
was brought in to pitch against<lb/>
the Yankees in the ALCS.<lb/>
Just as everyone expected,<lb/>
the Yankees won the AL East<lb/>
and the Red Sox grabbed the<lb/>
wild card spot. After both<lb/>
teams won their opening<lb/>
series, the match-up was set.<lb/>
We all know what hap-<lb/>
pened the last time these two<lb/>
teams met in the playoffs.<lb/>
Pedro Martinez and Don<lb/>
Zimmer had a fight that only<lb/>
Ron Artest could be proud of<lb/>
and Aaron Boone hit a shot in<lb/>
the seventh game to extend<lb/>
the seemingly eternal curse.<lb/>
After the Yankees defeated<lb/>
Schilling, Pedro and Cy Young<lb/>
winner Derek Lowe In three<lb/>
straight games, everyone gave<lb/>
up hope. Everyone but the Red<lb/>
Sox that is.<lb/>
They kept the series alive<lb/>
in game four. Then they<lb/>
extended It to a sixth game.<lb/>
Then they became the first<lb/>
team ever to force a game<lb/>
seven after being down 3-0.<lb/>
Game Seven was a chance<lb/>
for the Red Sox to make his-<lb/>
tory in baseball by being the<lb/>
first team ever to win a series<lb/>
'Interim University' no longer<lb/>
Ballard, Holland instill<lb/>
new pride in Pirate<lb/>
athletic programs<lb/>
ERIC QILMORE<lb/>
STAFF WRITER<lb/>
During the last year or so,<lb/>
many of supporters and outsid-<lb/>
ers of ECU preferred the name<lb/>
"Interim University I can't<lb/>
blame them. ECU's most nota-<lb/>
ble interims were the Chan-<lb/>
cellor (Bill Shelton), Athletic<lb/>
Director (Nick Floyd), and even<lb/>
the Director or Media Relations<lb/>
(Jody Jones).<lb/>
When Steve Ballard was hired<lb/>
as the chancellor in the middle<lb/>
of the last academic school year,<lb/>
he set a plan to change "Interim<lb/>
University" into an institution<lb/>
that has foundation. After the<lb/>
foundation would be built, Bal-<lb/>
lard understood that ECU has<lb/>
to be able to compete with other<lb/>
universities on a national level.<lb/>
Immediately when Ballard<lb/>
came aboard at ECU, he set<lb/>
publicly an agenda that would<lb/>
take place during his first<lb/>
100 days in office. Under Ran-<lb/>
dolph Chitwood's vision of a<lb/>
new Heart Center, on the agenda<lb/>
was finding the right person for<lb/>
athletic director.<lb/>
Previous to Ballard's arrival<lb/>
on campus, a search com-<lb/>
mittee of selected personnel<lb/>
had narrowed through numer-<lb/>
ous candidates. The original<lb/>
search committee listed person-<lb/>
ality traits and visions for what<lb/>
a top-flight athletic director<lb/>
should have.<lb/>
Many of those traits were<lb/>
very similar to Dave Hart, Jr a<lb/>
visionary athletic director for<lb/>
ECU now at Florida State. Hart<lb/>
helped to secure a national tele-<lb/>
vision package for then-indepen-<lb/>
dently affiliated ECU, an unheard<lb/>
of marketing move at that time.<lb/>
Hart spent 12 years at ECU, from<lb/>
1983 to 1995, and brought the<lb/>
Holland and Holtz will work together in the coming years in order to put ECU football back on the national radar.<lb/>
program to new heights.<lb/>
In conjunction with Ballard's<lb/>
arrival to campus, Ballard was<lb/>
ready to announce Hart's son<lb/>
Rick to the athletic director post.<lb/>
Rick Hart, only 31-years-old at<lb/>
the time had little experience<lb/>
and was serving as an assistant<lb/>
AD at Oklahoma. Ballard's near<lb/>
announcement created a huge<lb/>
upheaval, forcing the incoming<lb/>
chancellor to think twice.<lb/>
To Ballard's credit, he listened<lb/>
to the pulse of the Pirate Nation.<lb/>
He then, created a seven-member<lb/>
task force to confer with himself<lb/>
for the new hire. Ironically, one<lb/>
of the illustrious members was<lb/>
now ex-head football coach John<lb/>
Thompson. Ballard upset with<lb/>
the lack of star power among<lb/>
the candidates pooled by the<lb/>
task force, hired Chuck Neinas<lb/>
as a consultant. Neinas is highly<lb/>
respected and a consultant is<lb/>
commonplace in AD hires. How-<lb/>
ever, Ballard alienated some<lb/>
members of the original search<lb/>
committee and task force for<lb/>
ignoring their efforts.<lb/>
Well, until Terry Holland was<lb/>
named to the post. The Pirate<lb/>
Nation finally found a captain<lb/>
for a ship that had been lost at<lb/>
sea for years. Holland, a classy<lb/>
individual with years of experi-<lb/>
ence and endless connections<lb/>
was signed to a five-year deal<lb/>
which would serve as a last<lb/>
hurrah for the legendary basket-<lb/>
ball coach's career.<lb/>
I In! I.ii id came on board offi-<lb/>
cially Oct. 1, awkwardly in the<lb/>
middle of the football season.<lb/>
The ex-Clinton native saw ECU<lb/>
lose repeatedly and the seats<lb/>
become emptier and emptier<lb/>
over the course of the season.<lb/>
Holland understood the athletic<lb/>
department's budget depends on<lb/>
the success of the football team.<lb/>
Holland's goal of achieving a<lb/>
better conference situation was<lb/>
hindered by ECU's 3-20 record<lb/>
during the two past seasons.<lb/>
Holland made a tough and<lb/>
controversial decision to the<lb/>
direction of ECU football on<lb/>
Nov. 16. He and Ballard forced<lb/>
second-year coach Thompson to<lb/>
resign. The message was purely<lb/>
business, a matter of wins and<lb/>

TRENT WYNNE<lb/>
STAFF WRITER<lb/>
Fame is nice. Fame gets you<lb/>
money, women and if you just<lb/>
so happen to be an athlete, your<lb/>
name in video games. Thou-<lb/>
sands of professional and college<lb/>
athletes around the country<lb/>
participate in these video games,<lb/>
especially the ones that dawn<lb/>
their number or have their name<lb/>
tattooed on the Jersey.<lb/>
Some athletes are even lucky<lb/>
enough to get their own video<lb/>
game, like Tiger Woods himself.<lb/>
With almost all his abilities<lb/>
completely maxed out in the<lb/>
? game, Tiger and Sunday Tiger<lb/>
were both designed to be the<lb/>
best. I mean, he deserves it.<lb/>
The man Is the number one<lb/>
golfer in the world, right?<lb/>
Until Labor Day<lb/>
weekend of this year, Woods<lb/>
held the coveted number one<lb/>
for a record 264 consecutive<lb/>
weeks. In that weekend, Vijay<lb/>
Singh fired a 16 under par for<lb/>
the tourney, three strokes better<lb/>
than Woods, but more<lb/>
importantly, he locked up the<lb/>
number one spot, a first by any<lb/>
other player than Tiger since<lb/>
1999.<lb/>
"It feels great. I can't wait<lb/>
to celebrate said Singh in an<lb/>
interview with the BBC.<lb/>
Singh's 2004 performance<lb/>
included nine total tour<lb/>
wins highlighted by his tri-<lb/>
umph in a playoff at the PGA<lb/>
Championship against Chris<lb/>
DiMarco and Justin Leonard.<lb/>
Singh also became the first<lb/>
golfer in history to earn more<lb/>
than $10 million in one calen-<lb/>
der year as well.<lb/>
It would take a historic<lb/>
season like the one Singh had<lb/>
this year to overtake Tiger, but<lb/>
Woods was not so down at the<lb/>
thought of falling to number<lb/>
two in the entire world.<lb/>
"I've had a good run said<lb/>
Woods.<lb/>
"But being number two isn't<lb/>
too bad, is it?<lb/>
Apparently however, Woods<lb/>
isn't so satisfied with being<lb/>
number two after all. Woods<lb/>
real life slump has caromed<lb/>
over into his virtual life and has<lb/>
forced Tiger to make one of the<lb/>
toughest decisions he has ever<lb/>
had to make: giving up playing<lb/>
as himself. Tiger was previously<lb/>
unbeaten in the 2004 version of<lb/>
the game as he unlocked "Super<lb/>
Tiger" within the first two weeks<lb/>
of playing it. Eventually though,<lb/>
Tiger became fed up with Vir-<lb/>
tual Tiger after he fired a 74 at<lb/>
Bethpage Black, a course Woods<lb/>
says he can shoot three to four<lb/>
under par in real life.<lb/>
Woods<lb/>
"My buddy Cooter shot<lb/>
26-under and there I was, with<lb/>
Super Tiger in his Sunday Red<lb/>
shirt, firing a 74.1 almost threw<lb/>
the controller through the TV<lb/>
screen Woods said in an inter-<lb/>
view with sportsgoons.com.<lb/>
Tiger had enough and<lb/>
decided to make the switch. So<lb/>
who would he choose?<lb/>
"Last Saturday night<lb/>
(Summer 2004) we came home<lb/>
from the bar, and before we<lb/>
could even get out of his Buick,<lb/>
Tiger starts yelling 'I get to be<lb/>
Vijay! I get to be Vijay said<lb/>
friend Curtis Strange.<lb/>
"Some of us wanted to be<lb/>
Vijay too, but Tiger got to the<lb/>
controller first. It's kind of<lb/>
uncomfortable. None of us want<lb/>
to play as Tiger either because of<lb/>
how much he sucks right now.<lb/>
Super Tiger's iron play is simply<lb/>
atrocious. But one of us ends up<lb/>
being him because we feel bad<lb/>
for the guy<lb/>
Woods virtual performances<lb/>
have picked up since he made<lb/>
the change to Singh, claiming<lb/>
the Vijay is more accurate off<lb/>
the tees, hits more greens in<lb/>
regulation, putts better and has<lb/>
a consistent demeanor, never<lb/>
too high or too low.<lb/>

Bonds juiced<lb/>
BRENT WYNNE<lb/>
SENIOR STAFF WRITER<lb/>
Was there ever a doubt? For<lb/>
the fourth time in many years<lb/>
and the seventh time overall,<lb/>
Barry Bonds was named the<lb/>
National League MVP, capturing<lb/>
24 of 32 first place votes, solidify-<lb/>
ing himself as one of the greatest<lb/>
players of all time.<lb/>
The 40-year-old Bonds won<lb/>
the balloting in a landslide,<lb/>
with a comfortable 96-point<lb/>
victory against Adrian Beltre,<lb/>
who had a career season, enough<lb/>
for six first place votes. Bonds'<lb/>
407-point total was 160 more of<lb/>
third place finisher Albert Pujols,<lb/>
who had 247 points and a first<lb/>
place vote.<lb/>
In becoming the oldest player<lb/>
to ever win the awaid, Bonds<lb/>
season statistics resemble num-<lb/>
bers of a 28-year-old in his prime.<lb/>
Bonds led the NL in hitting<lb/>
(.362), on-base percentage (.609),<lb/>
slugging (.812) and times reached<lb/>
base (376). He was second in runs<lb/>
with 129 and although he only<lb/>
had 373 at-bats, he still managed<lb/>
fourth in home runs with 45.<lb/>
Bonds completely obliterated<lb/>
the major league record for walks<lb/>
by drawing 232, 100 more than,<lb/>
anyone else in baseball. He also<lb/>
set a record for intentional passes<lb/>
with 120, which is 52 more than<lb/>
the old record.<lb/>
Bonds' number of walks<lb/>
is so gaudy, that if you were<lb/>
to completely forget all of his<lb/>
hits from this past season, he<lb/>
would still have a higher on-<lb/>
base percentage than that of<lb/>
Florida Marlin outfielder Juan<lb/>
Pierre, who led the league in hits.<lb/>
In September, Bonds eclipsed<lb/>
the 700 home run mark and fin-<lb/>
ished with a total of 703. Bonds<lb/>

Woods<lb/>
from page B3<lb/>
Back in his real life<lb/>
endeavors, when he is not<lb/>
playing as Vijay, Woods has<lb/>
started to slowly but surely break<lb/>
out of his slump, some-<lb/>
thing that became evi-<lb/>
dent in last month's Dunlop<lb/>
Phoenix Tournament as Tiger<lb/>
won his first stroke play event of<lb/>
the 2004 season.<lb/>
Even more important, Woods<lb/>
thinks recently he has had an<lb/>
epiphany about his revamped<lb/>
golf swing.<lb/>
"I was here at Big Canyon<lb/>
in California before the tour-<lb/>
nament Woods said in an<lb/>
interview with pgatour.com.<lb/>
"I hit two shots that I felt<lb/>
that's what Hank (Haney) has<lb/>
been trying to get me to do<lb/>
this entire time. It was easy to<lb/>
replicate after that<lb/>
Woods had a similar<lb/>
encounter back in 1999 when<lb/>
Butch Harmon was his coach<lb/>
at the time. He was on the<lb/>
range in Isleworth during<lb/>
the month of May when he hit a<lb/>
shot vhere "everything clicked<lb/>
Woods dropped the club,<lb/>
picked up his cell phone and<lb/>
called Harmon.<lb/>
"Butchy Woods said.<lb/>
"I got it<lb/>
Tiger went on to have one of<lb/>
the most dominant stretches in<lb/>
the history of golf winning eight<lb/>
tournaments that year and nine<lb/>
in 2000, including three out of<lb/>
the four major championships.<lb/>
So what can the average fan of<lb/>
golf expect from Tiger in 2005?<lb/>
Woods may not fire any 26 under<lb/>
pars in a round, maybe not even<lb/>
in a tournament.<lb/>
However, Tiger, with his<lb/>
uncanny ability to step up to<lb/>
challenges, will not back down<lb/>
from the one that Vijay has<lb/>
presented to him in this past<lb/>
season. Woods will return to<lb/>
dominance next year, winning<lb/>
two out of four majors and<lb/>
regaining his title as the number<lb/>
one player in the world.<lb/>
Oh, by the way, he is<lb/>
planning on switching back to<lb/>
playing as himself on his video<lb/>
game eventually.<lb/>

losses, which Holland stated In<lb/>
a later press conference.<lb/>
With ECU at a crossroads,<lb/>
Holland was forced to act<lb/>
quickly in hiring a new coach.<lb/>
With 13 other institutions<lb/>
changing coaches, the six-foot,<lb/>
six-inch gentle giant needed<lb/>
to find a coach that would<lb/>
instill character and a winning<lb/>
attitude into the program.<lb/>
An incorrect hire would<lb/>
splinter the ECU faithful even<lb/>
more and could serve as a final<lb/>
blow to a seemingly depressed<lb/>
fan base.<lb/>
Enter Skip Holtz. Hired less<lb/>
than a week after the season<lb/>
ended, Holtz appears to be the<lb/>
hire Thompson wasn't. Both have<lb/>
similar personality traits, but<lb/>
different visions as to how to<lb/>
achieve their goals. Holtz has<lb/>
been into the fire before as a head<lb/>
coach, unlike his predecessor.<lb/>
Holtz's staff that he is currently<lb/>
assembling is one that<lb/>
will be top notch.<lb/>
In less than a week at the<lb/>
helm, Holtz understands the<lb/>
foundation the ECU football<lb/>
team was founded on. The son a<lb/>
legend wants to find players that<lb/>
are willing to play for the name<lb/>
on the front of the jersey rather<lb/>
than just receive a scholarship<lb/>
and playing time.<lb/>
Holtz's team is full of<lb/>
experience and needs<lb/>
maturity. If Holtz and his staff<lb/>
can find the chip on the shoulder<lb/>
attitude of the mid-to-late-1990s,<lb/>
he can re-establish the prestige<lb/>
of ECU football.<lb/>
After all, that's the goal that<lb/>
Ballard and Holland both have<lb/>
in mind. If the dominoes fall in<lb/>
place, a new conference could<lb/>
be calling.<lb/>
This writer can be contacted at<lb/>

after being down 3-0, but more<lb/>
importantly, a chance to get back<lb/>
to the series.<lb/>
Schilling was given the ball<lb/>
for game seven. Nine months<lb/>
earlier the Red Sox signed him<lb/>
for this one moment, a chance to<lb/>
beat those dreaded Yankees.<lb/>
Schilling was magical as the<lb/>
Bo Sox won the game 8-3.<lb/>
History had been made, but<lb/>
without the championship, his-<lb/>
tory had not been changed yet.<lb/>
Immediately, everyone's focus<lb/>
turned to the 1986 World Series.<lb/>
A ground ball hit a pebble and<lb/>
went under the legs of first base-<lb/>
man Bill Buckner in game six of<lb/>
the 1986 series. The error cost<lb/>
the Sox the title that year, as they<lb/>
would lose game seven as well.<lb/>
But that would not be the<lb/>
case this time. The Red Sox met<lb/>
the Cardinals in one of the worst<lb/>
World Series' I have ever seen,<lb/>
baseball wise. The American<lb/>
League champs dominated the<lb/>
Cardinals in four straight games,<lb/>
winning the world champion-<lb/>
ship on a simple ground ball.<lb/>
It's almost ironic that a<lb/>
ground ball ended it. A simple<lb/>
ground ball out would have won<lb/>
the title for the Sox in 86. It was<lb/>
fitting that almost the same play<lb/>
occurred to reverse the curse.<lb/>
The curse of the Bambino<lb/>
is now only a memory. Base-<lb/>
ball fans will forever remember<lb/>
the 2004 World Series - not<lb/>
for the amazing home run hit<lb/>
in the 7th game to win it, but<lb/>
for the sighs of relief the entire<lb/>
nation felt that cold October<lb/>
night. It was felt everywhere<lb/>
- from Boston, to poker tables<lb/>
across the nation, and yes, even<lb/>
in the Bronx.<lb/>

Bonds<lb/>
from page B3<lb/>
is expected to make a legitimate<lb/>
run at Hank Aaron's all-time<lb/>
home run record of 75S v the<lb/>
end of next season.<lb/>
The Giants outfielder has fin-<lb/>
ished in the top five of the MVP<lb/>
voting in 12 of the last IS seasons,<lb/>
a mark that will likely never again<lb/>
be surpassed.<lb/>
With that said, are we witness-<lb/>
ing greatness or just cheating at its'<lb/>
highest level?<lb/>
There may have never been a<lb/>
doubt about Bonds' MVP status,<lb/>
but doubt certainly creeps in<lb/>
among the minds of many when<lb/>
the issue of steroids arises.<lb/>
The super slugger was publicly<lb/>
accused last month of knowingly<lb/>
using anabolic steroids, an accusa-<lb/>
tion Bonds vehemently is denying.<lb/>
The San Francisco Chronicle reports<lb/>
Bonds told a federal grand jury<lb/>
he didn't know he was using sub-<lb/>
stances that were found to contain<lb/>
steroids.<lb/>
In the transcripts that included<lb/>
Bonds' testimony, the MVP told<lb/>
the grand jury last December he<lb/>
used clear and cream substances<lb/>
for arthritis that were given to him<lb/>
by his personal strength trainer<lb/>
during the 2003 season. Bonds<lb/>
went on to say he was informed the<lb/>
substances were flaxseed oil and a<lb/>
rubbing balm for the aching areas.<lb/>
The substances were supplied by<lb/>
none other than BALCO, which is<lb/>
the lab that has become infamous<lb/>
over the past few months due to<lb/>
their involvement in steroid cases<lb/>
ranging from Marion Jones to Bill<lb/>
Romanowski to Jason Giambi.<lb/>
Rachel Vizcarra, Bonds' publi-<lb/>
cist for the past 15 years and who<lb/>
has worked extensively in the<lb/>
entertainment public relations<lb/>
realm, said in an interview with<lb/>
The New York Times, "Barry will<lb/>
be Barry<lb/>
"There is no reason for him<lb/>
to change and he won't change<lb/>
said Vizcarra.<lb/>
"Not everyone is going to be a<lb/>
golden retriever puppy - and even<lb/>
though I see that golden retriever<lb/>
puppy in him - it's very rare that<lb/>
he lets people see that side. Either<lb/>
you can handle the personality or<lb/>
you can't. Take it or leave it<lb/>
What does that mean? To some<lb/>
it may mean that even if Barry is in<lb/>
the wrong, he may never admit it.<lb/>
To-me, it is just Barry. He's always<lb/>
represented himself with the chip<lb/>
on the shoulder attitude and,<lb/>
wrong or right, he will continue<lb/>
to be himself.<lb/>
So barring a confession from<lb/>
Bonds, we, the fans will be left with<lb/>
nothing but a mere accusation that<lb/>
will ultimately tarnish baseball's<lb/>
greatest record and a player's illus-<lb/>
trious career.<lb/>
I personally think that an<lb/>
accusation should do none of<lb/>
this, but human instinct relies<lb/>
on the media, whether they be<lb/>
credible or not, for their day-to-<lb/>
day "truthful" information, so<lb/>
the old saying of "innocent until<lb/>
proven guilty likely won't hold<lb/>
true in this case.<lb/>
For the sake of argument,<lb/>
what if Bonds took the steroids<lb/>
and knew what he was doing was<lb/>
illegal? For one, his dignity as a<lb/>
person would be non-existent<lb/>
and the game of baseball, still<lb/>
trying to heal the wounds from<lb/>
the Pete Rose scandal, would<lb/>
be sent into another downward<lb/>
spiral of calamity and dishonest.<lb/>

ECU prepares for fall commencement<lb/>
Each department creates a<lb/>
unique ceremony<lb/>
KRISTIN DAY<lb/>
ASSISTANT NEWS EDITOR<lb/>
ECU is finalizing arrangements<lb/>
for the graduation commencement<lb/>
in December, as well as smaller<lb/>
departmental ceremonies that<lb/>
would incorporate specified col-<lb/>
leges and schools within ECU.<lb/>
Liz Johnston, director for dis-<lb/>
ability support services, said this<lb/>
graduation will be different from<lb/>
last December when adminis-<lb/>
tration changed the format. A<lb/>
student survey following last<lb/>
December's ceremony indicated<lb/>
students wanted to return to the<lb/>
original arrangement.<lb/>
"Starting with last May, we<lb/>
went back to the old way which is<lb/>
the university ceremony and then<lb/>
the colleges and schools can have<lb/>
their own event said Johnston.<lb/>
There is going to be a band<lb/>
concert where the wind ensemble<lb/>
plays holiday music at 9:30 a.m.<lb/>
Students then will process in by<lb/>
school and college. Individual<lb/>
names will not be called.<lb/>
"This year Dr. Ballard will<lb/>
be giving remarks and then the<lb/>
degrees are conferred by Dr. Ballard<lb/>
by the degree candidates standing<lb/>
up as the group then they sit<lb/>
back down Johnston said.<lb/>
One student will also be<lb/>
awarded the Thomas Jordan Jarvis<lb/>
Medal presented by the Board of<lb/>
Trustees of ECU in recognition of<lb/>
extraordinary service to the uni-<lb/>
versity or society.<lb/>
Johnston said it is the highest<lb/>
award given by the university.<lb/>
This December, 1,740 students<lb/>
are eligible to graduate. The cer-<lb/>
emony is also open to students<lb/>
who graduated in August.<lb/>
Johnston said the number of<lb/>
students who sign up varies-from<lb/>
year to year, but she expects a lot of<lb/>
students will attend this year.<lb/>
"This year, because commence-<lb/>
ment is during exams, we expect a<lb/>
good turnout because everybody's<lb/>
on campus Johnston said.<lb/>
Johnston said students need<lb/>
to reserve a seat using OneStop at<lb/>
least a week before graduation and<lb/>
if there are any problems trying<lb/>
to sign up through the Internet,<lb/>
see GRADUATION page A4 Nearly 2,000 students are eligible to graduate in the ceremony at William's Arena at Minges Coliseum<lb/>

How to become<lb/>

Graduation from page A3<lb/>
The ECU Alumni Association boasts more than 108,000 members.<lb/>

Although a graduate must<lb/>
leave behind the label of an ECU<lb/>
studentupon receiving a diploma,<lb/>
one may still maintain a strong<lb/>
affiliation with the university by<lb/>
joining the ECU Alumni Associa-<lb/>
tion. The nonprofit organization,<lb/>
originally established In 1912, is a<lb/>
great way to stay in touch with the<lb/>
school and former students.<lb/>
The ECU Alumni Association<lb/>
was developed to reunite ECU<lb/>
graduates and keep them informed<lb/>
and involved in activities happen-<lb/>
ing at ECU. Alumni often donate<lb/>
money and help raise funds to<lb/>
support ECU.<lb/>
The association even sponsors<lb/>
special events during the year includ-<lb/>
ing I loliday in the Big Apple, the ECU<lb/>
Alumni Scholarship Golf Classic,<lb/>
alumni tailgates, holiday socials and<lb/>
class reunions. Alumni chapters in<lb/>
various locations also offer a range<lb/>
of annual events designed to bring<lb/>
ECU aluinni together.<lb/>

of benefits to members of the ECU<lb/>

"We also offer programs where<lb/>
alumni who have moved to differ-<lb/>

in different areas throughout the<lb/>
United States. It brings the alumni a<lb/>
contact for events that are offered<lb/>
Anyone who has attended<lb/>
ECU for two semesters may receive<lb/>
general membership in the alumni<lb/>
association. Those who donate to<lb/>
the organization are considered<lb/>
active members. You may even<lb/>
qualify for membership if you<lb/>
transferred to another school.<lb/>
Over the years, the ECU Alumni<lb/>
Association continues to grow. There<lb/>
are currently 108,000 members,<lb/>

In today's world, graduating<lb/>
from college seems essential if you<lb/>
want a job that pays well. But just<lb/>
having a diploma is not enough.to<lb/>
guarantee future job security.<lb/>
Those four or so years as an<lb/>
undergraduate in college are the<lb/>
perfect time to build a resume.<lb/>
Having experience in your<lb/>
intended job field makes a big<lb/>
difference when competing in the<lb/>
working world. An internship can<lb/>
really set you apart when applying<lb/>
for a job.<lb/>
"Students need to learn how to<lb/>

people is important said Suzanne<lb/>

for academic affairs at ECU.<lb/>
"As cliche as it may sound, it's<lb/>

in your desired job field may open<lb/>
many doors for students when<lb/>

Martin, who has more than<lb/>
20 years of experience in higher<lb/>

ECU bids goodbye to athletes<lb/>
Twenty athletes graduate<lb/>
JOHN BREAM<lb/>
SENIOR WRITER<lb/>
ECU can proudly boast it<lb/>
has perennially been among the<lb/>
nation's leading division one pro-<lb/>
grams in rate of graduation for its<lb/>
athletes. In fact, last year, Louisville<lb/>
was the only other school in Confer-<lb/>
ence USA to crack the top 25. The<lb/>
time has come again to bid farewell<lb/>
to many of our student athletes as<lb/>
they trade in their purple and gold<lb/>
uniforms for a college degree and<lb/>
begin their pursuit of a career.<lb/>
The football team will graduate<lb/>
two si niors - Desmond Robinson<lb/>
ard M vin Townes. Robinson, a<lb/>
native of Rock Hill, SC, began his<lb/>
areer as tl . ack-up quarterback<lb/>
behind P, Troth. Robinson<lb/>
acquired tl .tarting job his junior<lb/>
year, completing more than 66<lb/>
percent of his passes and throwing<lb/>
for more than 140 yards pei game<lb/>
during a turbulent 1-11 season.<lb/>
Townes was the shining star<lb/>
of the 2003 ECU football team.<lb/>
During thai season, Townes<lb/>
recorded the 12th 1,000 yard<lb/>
rushing season in ECU history,<lb/>
amassing 1,128 yards, which was<lb/>
the third most in C-USA. In addi-<lb/>
tion, Townes was named to the<lb/>
All-Conference USA second team<lb/>
and received C-USA's Offensive<lb/>
layer of the Week Award for his<lb/>
CUter-bcSt 184 yard rushing per-<lb/>
formance against Army in ECU'S<lb/>
lone 2003 victory.<lb/>
The ECU baseball team will also<lb/>
graduate two star performers. John<lb/>
1'oppert was routinely the starting<lb/>
catcher for the 2003 Pirate squad that<lb/>
advanced to within two wins of the<lb/>
College World Series. That season,<lb/>
I'oppert started 29 games for the<lb/>
Pirates and recorded a .218 average<lb/>
with nine doublesand two home runs.<lb/>
Ryanjones has started S3 games<lb/>
for the Pirates in center field during<lb/>
each of the last two seasons. Last<lb/>
season, the Gibsonia, Pa. native hit<lb/>
.264 with 10 doubles, four home<lb/>
runs and 31 RBIs. He also ranked<lb/>
second on the team in runs scored.<lb/>
In Jones' sophomore season, he<lb/>
was named to the All C-USA tour-<lb/>
nament team, driving in three<lb/>
of ECU's four runs in the cham-<lb/>
pionship game against Houston.<lb/>
The women's soccer team<lb/>
graduates three seniors this fall,<lb/>
including All C-USA second team<lb/>
member, Penny Perrott. Perrott<lb/>
recorded five goals and five assists<lb/>
in the 2003 Lady Pirates' Soccer<lb/>
campaign. In addition, Perrot was<lb/>
named to the NCSAAdidas All-<lb/>
??nth region second team. Also<lb/>
Football players Marvin Townes and Desmond Robinson are among 20 athletes graduating in December's commencement exercises.<lb/>
graduating from the Lady Pirates<lb/>
soccer team are rristin Bowman<lb/>
and Crtstina Rivera.<lb/>
The softball team graduates<lb/>
one of its most consistent 2004<lb/>
performers, Lacassa Hill. Hill trans-<lb/>
ferred to ECU prior to the 2003<lb/>
season and took over the starting<lb/>
job in center field. Last season, Hill<lb/>
helped pace the Pirates with a .281<lb/>
batting average, 12 doubles and 24<lb/>
RBIs. In addition, she led the Pirates<lb/>
in stolen bases, never getting<lb/>
thrown out in 54 attempts.<lb/>
Other outstanding graduates<lb/>
this fall include Alyssa Hayes of<lb/>
women's golf, Brian Deutsch,<lb/>
Joseph Ellington and Michael<lb/>
Logan from the men's soccer<lb/>
team, Cliff Skudin of men's swim-<lb/>
ming, Westley Ricci and Jeffrey<lb/>
Whittle-Walls from the men's<lb/>
trackcross-country team and<lb/>
Nicole Marchewka of women's<lb/>
trackcross-country.<lb/>
The ECU student community is<lb/>
thankful for all of the student athletes<lb/>
who challenged themselves by bal-<lb/>
ancing classes, practice, games and a<lb/>
demanding travel schedule. We salute<lb/>
the commitment and dedication of<lb/>
these athletes who have helped ECU<lb/>
make the transfer to C-USA and we<lb/>
wish all of our graduates the best of<lb/>
luck in their future endeavors.<lb/>
