Increase brings<lb />
challenges, benefits<lb />
NICK HENNE<lb />
NEWS EDITOR<lb />
With ECU's enrollment at a<lb />
record high of 22,766 students,<lb />
ECU remains the third largest<lb />
school in the UNC system.<lb />
ECU is not only increasing in<lb />
the quantity of students, but the<lb />
quality too is improving.<lb />
"We're trying to get more stu-<lb />
dents and better students simul-<lb />
taneously If you look at the<lb />
SAT scores, we are doing that<lb />
said Bob Thompson, director of<lb />
the Office of Institutional Plan-<lb />
ning, Research and Effectiveness.<lb />
The entire UNC system will<lb />
have to accommodate for the<lb />
growth while there is an increase<lb />
in high school graduates.<lb />
Thompson said this increase<lb />
will have an impact on ECU in<lb />
later years.<lb />
"ECU is expecting a lot more<lb />
increase in enrollment. Over the<lb />
next two to three years, we will<lb />
double the existing distance edu-<lb />
cation Theon-campus enroll-<lb />
ment will have a more gradual<lb />
increase Thompson said.<lb />
Challenges ECU may have<lb />
to face include the tightness of<lb />
space. ECU will have to work<lb />
to accommodate the number of<lb />
students we are going to be get-<lb />
ting and the number of faculty<lb />
to serve those students.<lb />
"This increase will affect<lb />
ECU in a variety of ways <lb />
It will certainly mean more<lb />
faculty members, but I think<lb />
it also means increased rec-<lb />
ognition for ECU'S ability to<lb />
service eastern North Carolina<lb />
and the state Thompson said.<lb />
"As the graduate programs<lb />
are increasing in size and the<lb />
graduates are out there working,<lb />
it enhances our reputation and<lb />
probably, in turn, recruits more<lb />
people. It helps those individu-<lb />
als in their jobs. I think it also<lb />
increases the opportunities for<lb />
our undergraduates<lb />
While the enrollment of<lb />
students taking class on campus<lb />
has increased, the main cause<lb />
of the enrollment increase is an<lb />
increase in distance education,<lb />
which has increased by roughly<lb />
1,000 students for a total of<lb />
nearly 3,200 students.<lb />
Thompson said distance edu-<lb />
cation has been a fairly recent<lb />
phenomenon during the past<lb />
five years, and it is currently<lb />
made up of mostly graduate stu-<lb />
dents. While distance education<lb />
is composed of mainly online<lb />
courses, there are some face-to-<lb />
face arrangements either at ECU<lb />
or at another location.<lb />
Existing classroom graduate<lb />
programs are shifting to distance<lb />
education courses, and are moving<lb />
away from the classroom setting.<lb />

Kappa Delta holds dedication ceremony<lb />
Ribbon cutting<lb />
ceremony marked in<lb />
chapter's history<lb />
NICK HENNE<lb />
NEWS EDITOR<lb />
The ECU chapter of Kappa<lb />
Delta sorority had a ribbon cut-<lb />
ting grand opening ceremony<lb />
for their new sorority house<lb />
Saturday, attracting sorority ECU<lb />
alumnae and the national Kappa<lb />
Delta president.<lb />
Julie Johnson, national presi-<lb />
dent of Kappa Delta, gave a speech<lb />
at the ceremony, thanking the<lb />
key people involved in obtain-<lb />
ing the house and discussing the<lb />
importance of the new house.<lb />
The celebration consisted of<lb />
an open house with Kappa Delta<lb />
alumnae, Ion Outterbridge, the<lb />
director of Greek life, the national<lb />
Kappa Delta president and other<lb />
significant people relating to the<lb />
chapter in attendance.<lb />
Adrian Wilkinson, president<lb />
of ECU's Kappa Delta chapter said<lb />
the chapter will always remember<lb />
this day, and they look to benefit<lb />
from the new addition.<lb />
"This marks a landmark for<lb />
the chapter, signifying all the<lb />
hard work in establishing a house<lb />
for our chapter said Wilkinson.<lb />
"This is a huge stepping stone<lb />
for our chapter<lb />
Wilkinson said the house<lb />
provides a location the sorority<lb />
can call its own and allows more<lb />
people to recognize them. She<lb />
hopes it will bring a lot of positive<lb />
relations with the Greek system.<lb />
Other benefits, Wilkinson<lb />
said she feels the new landmark<lb />
will bring are an additional<lb />
amount of recruits, which will<lb />
bring more people into the Greek<lb />
system in general and a common<lb />
location where the sisters can<lb />
Kappa Delta sisters gather with their national president at their house dedication ceremony.<lb />
hang out and offer to returning<lb />
alumnae of the chapter.<lb />
"This is a very special day for<lb />
us, and this is a day that will be<lb />
marked in the books for Kappa<lb />
Delta Wilkinson said.<lb />
Outterbridge said this is some-<lb />
thing Kappa Delta has worked<lb />
hard for during the past four<lb />
years since they came back to<lb />
campus. Outterbridge said Kappa<lb />
Delta has never had a problem<lb />
in recruiting members and has<lb />
excelled in academics, as well<lb />
- their new house will make<lb />
them more united with the Greek<lb />
system NPC. This new addition<lb />
would only help Kappa Delta con-<lb />
tinue to excel Outterbridge said.<lb />
Vanessa Anthony, senior<lb />
nursing major and member<lb />
of Kappa Delta, said she will<lb />
always look back on this day,<lb />
and she agrees it will bene-<lb />
fit the sorority with recruit-<lb />
ment and serving as a place<lb />
where the alumnae can return.<lb />
Kappa Delta was founded in<lb />
1897 at Longwood University<lb />
in Farmville, Va. The sorority<lb />

ECU student commits suicide in Aycock<lb />

NICK HENNE<lb />
NEWS EDITOR<lb />
Christopher Pope, freshman<lb />
music major, was found dead<lb />
Sunday in Aycock Residence Hall.<lb />
Medical examiners office ruled<lb />
the death a suicide.<lb />
The Center for Counseling<lb />
and Student Development has<lb />
held debriefing sessions and<lb />
meetings with students in the<lb />
music department and Aycock<lb />
Residence Hall to cope with the<lb />
death of the student. These ses-<lb />
sions are necessary to anyone<lb />
who is having trouble in dealing<lb />
with the incident.<lb />
Lynn M. Roeder, associate<lb />
vice chancellor for counseling<lb />
at the Center for Counseling<lb />
and Student Development said<lb />
the quicker the office can get<lb />
to students affected by the inci-<lb />
dent and normalize the intense<lb />
feeling, the better off they will<lb />
be. The j,jal of those meetings<lb />
was to make contact with the<lb />
students. Roeder said all people<lb />
react to situations like this in<lb />
different ways.<lb />
"It touches them very deeply<lb />
said Roeder.<lb />
The Center for Counsel-<lb />
ing and Student Development<lb />
allows walk-ins to speak with<lb />
counselors there and work to<lb />
rationalize situations. Counsel-<lb />
ing is free for all students and<lb />
serves as a neutral party who<lb />
can listen to any problems stu-<lb />
dents might be experiencing and<lb />
sort them out in a rational<lb />
manner.<lb />
Roeder said today's college<lb />
students are stressed and are<lb />
faced with much competition<lb />
to the point where it becomes<lb />
too extreme for them to handle.<lb />
Freshmen often have the<lb />
largest difficulty in adjusting to<lb />
college life which includes<lb />
making friends, fitting in and<lb />
connecting with the college<lb />
scene. Some students cry out for<lb />
help while others keep issues to<lb />
themselves and a small amount<lb />
of students resort to suicide.<lb />
A depression screening day<lb />

Tar River Poetry'<lb />
receives grant to<lb />
address concerns<lb />
KATIE KOKINDA BALDWIN<lb />
ASSISTANT NEWS EDITOR<lb />
The bi-annual ECU poetry<lb />
magazine, Tar River Poetry,<lb />
received a $10,000 grant from<lb />
the National Endowment for the<lb />
Arts for 2004 just after their 25th<lb />
anniversary issue.<lb />
Peter Makuck, distinguished<lb />
professor of arts and sciences and<lb />
editor of TRP said the National<lb />
Endowment office in Washing-<lb />
ton called him first informing<lb />
him of the grant.<lb />
"They said that our anniver-<lb />
sary issue was brought to their<lb />
attention by a number of other<lb />
poets and said that we were<lb />
deserving of some financial help<lb />
they said we'd like to be able to<lb />
give you $10,000 said Makuck.<lb />
The process in receiving the<lb />
grant was not simple compared<lb />
to the humble beginnings of TRP,<lb />
papers and forms. Starting as a<lb />
local journal sold only in eastern<lb />
North Carolina, it was entitled<lb />
Tar River Poets.<lb />
"It was paid for largely out of<lb />
pocket by my predecessor with<lb />
some grants from the North<lb />
Carolina Arts Council and a little<lb />
bit of support from the English<lb />
department. When I was hired,<lb />
I had a mandate to expand and<lb />
make it a national journal<lb />
Makuck said.<lb />
"I liked the Idea of Tar River,<lb />
somehow got enchanted when I<lb />
came here and it conjures up<lb />
all kinds of images so I decided<lb />
to call it Tar River Poetry and<lb />
founded it in 1978<lb />
Competing with approx-<lb />
imately 1,200-1,500 literary<lb />
magazines around the country,<lb />
TRP has had poems selected<lb />
from its pages to be re-printed,<lb />
with permission, in national<lb />
anthologies, the American Year-<lb />
book of Annual Verse and other<lb />
publications. Although there<lb />
is no monetary compensation<lb />
involved with these honors, they<lb />
have given TRP a certain prestige.<lb />
Poets consider it an honor to be<lb />
published in TRP, even without<lb />
any dollar signs attached. How-<lb />
ever, with the grant from the<lb />
NEA, future compensation is now<lb />
possible.<lb />
"The lion's share of the money<lb />
will be used to pay the contribu-<lb />
tors and when the two-year<lb />
support period is up, we will<lb />
re-apply for continued financial<lb />
support and we hope we will still<lb />
be able to pay our poets down the<lb />
road Makuck said.<lb />
TRP also plans to direct some<lb />
of the money toward advertising<lb />
TRP on Web sites and in the front<lb />
and back covers of prestigious<lb />
literary magazines.<lb />
Consisting primarily of origi-<lb />
nal poetry submitted from sea-<lb />
soned and brand new poets alike,<lb />
the magazine also publishes book<lb />
reviews, essays on poetry and<lb />
profiles of poets. Sorting through<lb />
submission after submission, the<lb />
task seems daunting - however,<lb />
Makuck enjoys his job.<lb />
"I still read everything, and<lb />
I love to find someone that has<lb />
never been published before<lb />

other buyout completed In January,<lb />
Krispy Kreme didnt disclose that one<lb />
of the sellers was Chief Executive<lb />

The project said that In 2000, voters in<lb />

Tobacco lawyer denies knowledge<lb />
of document destruction<lb />
WASHINGTON (API-A longtime lawyer<lb />
for major cigarette manufacturers<lb />
said Monday government<lb />
lawyers got It wrong when they<lb />
speculated he would testify he<lb />
knew firsthand that the Industry had<lb />
destroyed documents.<lb />
Justice Department lawyers had<lb />
written in a court filing that attorney<lb />
Robert Northrip would say he knew<lb />
that documents central to a lawsuit<lb />
In Australia were destroyed. The suit<lb />
involved an Australian subsidiary of<lb />
British American Tobacco Co PLC.<lb />
But when Northrip took the stand<lb />
Monday in the government's<lb />
racketeering case against the industry,<lb />
he said he first heard the allegations<lb />
about document destruction when<lb />
they became public as part of the<lb />
court decision against the Australian<lb />
company two years ago.<lb />
He also filed a document with the<lb />
court last week saying the government<lb />
was wrong to speculate he knew<lb />
about document destruction in the<lb />
Australia case.<lb />
Justice lawyers declined<lb />
comment Monday. <lb />
The Australian court decision had<lb />
named Northrip as one of several<lb />
people who might be 'likely to<lb />
know whether such documents<lb />
were destroyed<lb />

that he had no Involvement In<lb />

Northrip also faced questions about<lb />

additives were harmful. He testified<lb />
that he told his clients only that they<lb />
could destroy data about additives<lb />

Proceeds go to<lb />

SUMMER MARTIN<lb />

The ECU volunteer center<lb />
Is hosting the "Jail N' Ball"<lb />
fund raiser this week in an<lb />
effort to raise money for the<lb />
children's unit at Pitt County<lb />
Memorial Hospital.<lb />
Jessica Gagne, NC campus<lb />
compact vista, came up<lb />
with the idea. In the event,<lb />
warrants are issued to have<lb />
students or faculty members<lb />
arrested and sent to a prison<lb />
called the "Paddy Wagon Bails<lb />
have to be paid to get out of jail,<lb />
and the prisoners' pictures will<lb />
be taken at the homecoming<lb />
event on Thursday.<lb />
All a person has to do<lb />
to participate is pay $1 for a<lb />
warrant and write the name of the<lb />
person they want to have arrested<lb />
on the warrant. The person will<lb />
then be put into the "Paddy<lb />
Wagon" until students pay bail<lb />
to get out of jail. Participants<lb />
are eligible to pay more than $1<lb />
for the warrant, but the bail will<lb />
remain twice the amount of the<lb />
cost of the warrant. Warrants can<lb />
be obtained from the volunteer<lb />
office in the basement of the<lb />
Chrlstenbury Gym.<lb />
The main event will take<lb />
place Thursday at the top of<lb />
College Hill from 5 p.m. - 8 p.m.<lb />
in combination with the Pirate<lb />
cookout and the homecoming<lb />
pep rally. The event will host<lb />
two alternative bands - Dolly<lb />
Dagger and Narallis. There will<lb />
be free food and drinks for<lb />
attendants of the event and prizes<lb />
will also be given. Prizes donated<lb />
are from Outback Steakhouse,<lb />
Ryan's Steak House, Greenville<lb />
Marines and Kmart. Donations<lb />
are accepted to help raise money<lb />
for the cause.<lb />
This event shows ECU'S<lb />
students care for terminally or<lb />
temporarily ill children. This<lb />
fund raiser's main goal is to help<lb />
improve the children's stay in<lb />
the hospital.<lb />
"There are children who<lb />
have to be in the hospital during<lb />
holidays and we just want to<lb />
try to make their stay as pleasant<lb />
as possible. No child wants to<lb />
be in the hospital during a<lb />
holiday, so although we can<lb />
not necessarily give them joy,<lb />
we try to at least put a smile on<lb />
their face said Brooke Griffin,<lb />
sophomore nursing major.<lb />
Shawn Moore, program<lb />
assistant, said students<lb />
who are hesitant about<lb />
participating to know they<lb />
can be anonymous. People<lb />
arrested will not be able to<lb />
find out who paid to have<lb />
them arrested.<lb />
Moore said several students<lb />
are using the anonymous factor<lb />
as an advantage to get back at<lb />
their professors for the many tests<lb />
given last week.<lb />
While some students are<lb />
having fun with this new kind<lb />
of fund raiser, others are not<lb />
quite sure about the whole idea of<lb />
having someone arrested and put<lb />
into the "Paddy Wagon<lb />
"I would participate, but only<lb />
because it is for the children<lb />
Griffin said.<lb />
The faculty is also taking<lb />
advantage of the event and is<lb />
arresting other faculty members.<lb />
"The faculty seems to<lb />
be enjoying this fund raiser.<lb />
The entire political science<lb />
department bought warrants for<lb />
each other said Moore.<lb />
The fund raiser has already<lb />
raised more than $100 and after<lb />
everyone pays bail, there will be<lb />
a lot more. This is the first year<lb />
for this event and the goal is to<lb />
raise $500. If this year's event is<lb />
successful, it may be repeated next<lb />
year, and the organization's goal<lb />
will rise to a greater challenge.<lb />

Japan takes bolder military<lb />
role In post-Cold War era<lb />
TOKYO (AP) - When the U.Sled<lb />
coalition drove Iraqi invaders from<lb />
Kuwait in 1991, Japan kept Its<lb />
soldiers home.<lb />
A decade later, it broke with a pattern<lb />
In force since World War II: It sent its<lb />
navy to provide support against the<lb />
Taliban in Afghanistan in 2001, and<lb />
this year deployed troops to Iraq on<lb />
a humanitarian mission.<lb />
The new activism illustrates a quickly<lb />
evolving post-Cold War defense<lb />
policy aimed at winning Japan<lb />
the global respect that befits an<lb />
economic superpower and supporting<lb />
a world order under which Tokyo<lb />
has prospered.<lb />
While its defense still depends heavily<lb />
on 50,000 U.S. troops stationed here,<lb />
It has moved step by step into the<lb />
wider world, starting in 1992 when it<lb />
sent troops overseas for the first time,<lb />
as U.N. peacekeepers in Cambodia.<lb />
In the late 1990s, it expanded<lb />
support of U.S. forces to operations<lb />
in "areas around Japan which has<lb />

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) - At<lb />

each year without food aid, a British<lb />
aid group said Monday, marking 20<lb />
years since a devastating famine<lb />
killed more than half a million people<lb />
In the impoverished country.<lb />
Now, foreign aid should focus on<lb />
lifting this nation of 70 million out<lb />
of poverty, rather than just keeping<lb />
people alive with food handouts, the<lb />
Save the Children aid group said.<lb />
"Millions of people In the historically<lb />
famine-prone northeastern highlands<lb />
are worse off and more vulnerable<lb />
than ever said Mike Aaronson, head<lb />
of the group.<lb />
Aaronson said "lack of political will" by<lb />
world leaders and "paltry" aid have not<lb />
helped the nation combat persistent<lb />
food shortages - two decades after<lb />
the 1984 Live Band hit song "Do They<lb />
Know It's Christmas?" raised $10<lb />
million for starving Ethiopians.<lb />
The song raised awareness of a<lb />
famine facing 8 million Ethiopians and<lb />
spawned other projects, including<lb />
the trans-Atlantic Live Aid rock<lb />

in more than US$100 million.<lb />

The Ten Commandments monument in Montgomery, Ala.<lb />
MONTGOMERY, AL. (AP)<lb />
 The three-year legal battle over<lb />
ousted Alabama Chief Justice Roy<lb />
Moore and his Ten Command-<lb />

Monday when the U.S. Supreme<lb />
Court rejected Moore's final appeal.<lb />
The high court made no<lb />
comment in declining Moore's<lb />
request to reverse his expul-<lb />

judicial ethics panel for refusing<lb />
a federal judge's order to remove<lb />
the 5,300-pound monument<lb />
from the Alabama courthouse.<lb />
Moore said in a statement<lb />
that it was hypocritical for the<lb />
"liberal Supreme Court" to turn<lb />
down his appeal even though<lb />
the justices begin each ses-<lb />

it said Moore, whose appeal<lb />
to keep the monument in the<lb />
courthouse was rejected by the<lb />
court last year.<lb />
Opponents of the judge<lb />
and his monument cheered<lb />
the decision.<lb />
"Now, no court on this planet<lb />

LOS ANGELES (AP) Drew<lb />

The temporary dye job was to<lb />

8:30p.m. EDTThursday on the WB.<lb />
The series stars Carey and<lb />
many of his quick-witted chums<lb />
from his "Whose Line is it<lb />
Anyway?" series and his tour<lb />
group, including Brad Sherwood,<lb />
Colin Mochrie, Greg Proops, Julie<lb />

The cast performs impro-<lb />

live audience, minus all props<lb />
but in front of a so-called green<lb />
screen, which is typically used by<lb />
Hollywood as a canvas for com-<lb />
puter-generated imagery that is<lb />
added later.<lb />
On Carey's new show, the<lb />
green screen is electronically<lb />
replaced with background, cos-<lb />
tumes and assorted props that fit<lb />
the skit - all created by a variety<lb />
of animation techniques, includ-<lb />
ing hand-drawn, stop-motion<lb />
and computer-generated.<lb />
The studio audience sees none<lb />
of the effects, but the TV audience<lb />
is treated to the result when the<lb />
episode airs six to 12 weeks later.<lb />
In one skit, for instance, the<lb />
actors' faces and voices remain<lb />
intact, but their bodies become<lb />
G.I. Joe-style dolls moving against<lb />
a boot camp background.<lb />
In another bit, the back-<lb />
ground morphs from golf course<lb />
to farm to baseball diamond to<lb />
kids' playground to outhouse to<lb />
jungle scene to picket line to <lb />

Then there's the routine where<lb />
Mochrie is overlaid with a blond<lb />
wig and peppermint pink mater-<lb />

twins, drawn to look like Carey.<lb />
In a conversation heavily<lb />
punctuated with his amiable<lb />
laugh, Carey talked about why<lb />
- after a combined 15 seasons on<lb />
ABC's "The Drew Carey Show"<lb />
and "Whose Line is it Anyway? "<lb />
- he's playing with digital tricks<lb />
on the WB.<lb />
For one, he says ABC treated<lb />
him like a has-been, moving his<lb />
shows all over the schedule and<lb />
allowing them to peter out with-<lb />
out any firm goodbyes.<lb />
But his "sad" experience with<lb />
ABC hasn't dented his eagerness<lb />
to make his new series popular<lb />
on a different network. He says<lb />
he dreamed up the concept<lb />
because he's hooked by the tal-<lb />

it plunged Guatemala into a<lb />

The game was set up by<lb />

and by Guatemalan journalist<lb />

was to pit the prostitutes against<lb />
the Ice Devils, a team of wealthy<lb />

WEDNESDAY October 6, 2004<lb />
Our View<lb />
Have you ever thought about what a debate<lb />
proves? Could it prove one is better than the<lb />
other because of how they present themselves?<lb />
Could it prove one person answers questions<lb />
better or worse? Does it prove one person is<lb />
right or wrong?<lb />
In the first presidential debate this election year,<lb />
President Bush defended his decision to bring<lb />
down the dictator Saddam Hussein by sending<lb />
in thousands of U.S. troops saying their sacrifice<lb />
was both "noble and worthy<lb />
"We're being challenged like never before, and<lb />
we have a duty to our country and to future<lb />
generations of Americans to achieve a free<lb />
Iraq, a free Afghanistan ar.6 to rid the world of!<lb />
weapons of mass destructions said Bush.<lb />
According to a CNN article, "Kerry said the<lb />
invasion of Iraq was an ili-conceived adventure<lb />
that's 'getting worse by the day' and has dis<lb />
tracted the United States from the fight against<lb />
terrorism, which Kerry insisted he could win too<lb />
. by fighting a smarter war<lb />
Kerry's inconsistencies were made clear during<lb />
the debate after his congressional decision<lb />
authorizing Bush to take action in the current<lb />
war on terror was brought to light.<lb />
Kerry is now saying that .Iraq "was the wrong<lb />
war at the wrong place at the wrong time<lb />
At one point during the debate, Bush was asked<lb />
"if the Iraq experience would make him more<lb />
reluctant to launch preemptive military opera-<lb />
tions in the future The president responded<lb />
he "never wanted to commit troops" but did so<lb />
because "the enemy attacked us - and I have a<lb />
solemn duty to protect the American people<lb />
While both candidates gave valid points, there<lb />
are still issues that remain to be debated.<lb />
The next few weeks will give better insight on<lb />
which candidate could be better suited to lead<lb />
America for the next four years.<lb />
It is our belief that Bush will stand by his cur-<lb />
rent decisions and hopefully finish what he has<lb />
started, not only with the war on terror, but in<lb />
every aspect of his presidency.<lb />
If Kerry is elected, it is our hope that he will<lb />
stand by the American people and make the<lb />
right choices for our country.<lb />

STAFF WRITER<lb />
59-7. Do you recognize those num-<lb />
bers? I'm sure ECU's football team<lb />
does.<lb />
No, 59-7 isn't our football team's<lb />
record over the past few seasons. If so, 1<lb />
probably wouldn't be writing anything<lb />
about them. After all, I'm not a sports<lb />
writer and ECU athletics is not my area<lb />
of expertise.<lb />
However, I am an ECU student, one<lb />
that prides herself on holding high our<lb />
university's standards. As such, I have<lb />
something to say.<lb />
There's probably no reason for me<lb />
to remind anyone that 59-7 was the<lb />
score of Saturday's football game versus<lb />
the Louisville Cardinals. There was no<lb />
big celebration in Greenville the night<lb />
after the game, so I'm sure even if you<lb />
didn't watch it on television, you can<lb />
probably guess who left on the losing<lb />
end.<lb />
Our football program's once touted<lb />
tradition of excellence seems to be<lb />
fading into oblivion. After last year's<lb />
losing season and another that seems<lb />
to be following suit this fall, ECU fans<lb />
are getting discouraged.<lb />
And why shouldn't they be? All I<lb />
have to say is 59-7.<lb />
I was talking to a friend recently<lb />
about the state of our football team and<lb />
the financial burden that goes with it.<lb />
Our university, alumni and supporters<lb />
in the Pirate Club continue to fund<lb />
scholarship athletes on a team that<lb />
really doesn't seem to be performing.<lb />
Is it unreasonable to think that if<lb />
someone doesn't fulfill his athletic<lb />
potential perhaps his scholarship<lb />
based on such performance should<lb />
be revoked? If he were at ECU on an<lb />
academic scholarship and his grades<lb />
weren't consistently at a certain level,<lb />
his academic scholarship would be<lb />
forfeited.<lb />
There are students at ECU who<lb />
will lose their academic scholarships<lb />
if they don't maintain an AB average.<lb />
Performing at a B level in the classroom<lb />
is not enough. Being an above-average<lb />
student puts them on a sort of academic<lb />
probation. If they don't bring their<lb />
grades up, they lose their financial<lb />
backing.<lb />
Yet our football team isn't making<lb />
A's on the field. I would daresay their<lb />
record doesn't even put them at aver-<lb />
age. Still, they receive continuous<lb />
financial backing from the university.<lb />
Please tell me what is wrong with this<lb />
picture.<lb />
But before you begin sending me<lb />
hate mail for this opinion, I have some-<lb />
thing more to add.<lb />
Students on academic scholarship<lb />
who do not make the required grades<lb />
are given a second chance. They have<lb />
another semester to prove themselves,<lb />
to raise their grades and to show they<lb />
are deserving of their scholarship. If<lb />
they can do this, then it's pretty much<lb />
business as usual.<lb />
All's well that ends well. The admin-<lb />
istration understands everyone makes<lb />
mistakes and most of us deserve second<lb />
chances.<lb />
On that note, I'm not taking off<lb />
my purple and gold. I'll be at every<lb />
home football game wearing my ECU<lb />
t-shirt and screaming for my Pirates.<lb />
That's right. I'm giving them a second<lb />
chance because I know those guys are<lb />
out on the field playing their hearts<lb />
out. They're our fellow Pirates and they<lb />
want to make us proud just as badly, if<lb />
not more so, than we want them to.<lb />
I know a lot of students and even<lb />
ECU graduates have given up on their<lb />
alma mater. Fair weather fans bash our<lb />
team and bash coach Thompson. To<lb />
what purpose?<lb />
Sure, it may help relieve some<lb />
frustrations, but giving up and tearing<lb />
down will get us nowhere. I, for one,<lb />
still believe.<lb />

Dear Editor,<lb />
This being my first year at ECU, I<lb />
am stunned at the number of college<lb />
students that smoke cigarettes. I respect<lb />
their right to do as they will, but not<lb />
when it infringes on my rights. When<lb />
waiting outside between classes, some-<lb />
one never fails to walk directly in front<lb />
of me or sit down beside me and flick<lb />
ash in my face. Not only is it rude and<lb />
inconsiderate, it is a health hazard,<lb />
especially for me since I am allergic to<lb />
the smoke. Just as bad, when students<lb />
are finished smoking they throw their<lb />
butts down on the ground anywhere<lb />
they feel like. I wish students would<lb />
show more respect for the rights of<lb />
other people. I believe it would be a<lb />
great Idea for there to be designated<lb />
smoking spots on campus for those<lb />
people that have to have their cigarette<lb />
between classes.<lb />

Dear Editor,<lb />
I am writing in response to Peter<lb />
Kalajlan's article, titled "Firebrand<lb />
preacher visits campus printed in the<lb />
Thursday, Sept. 30 edition of TEC.<lb />
I have obviously read the article,<lb />
and can, in good conscience, say that<lb />
I agree with him 100 percent. I have a<lb />
few gaylesbian friends and relatives<lb />
and personally, I fail to understand<lb />
why it is such a sin to love somebody.<lb />
1 am a Pagan, but I am very familiar<lb />
with the Ten Commandments and one<lb />
of them, as you probably also know, is<lb />
"Thou shalt not lie So, my question<lb />
is this: Is this preacher, who no doubt<lb />
means well, trying to say it is better to<lb />
lie about who one actually is, better, to<lb />
lead a false life, than it is to be true to<lb />
oneself? If so, I believe his heart is in<lb />
the wrong place.<lb />
As for the issue of abortion, I am<lb />
pro-choice and wanted to reiterate on<lb />
what you said, that, whereas the picture<lb />
this man was toting about with him was<lb />
disgusting and thoroughly inappropri-<lb />
ate, it did not change my mind one bit. I<lb />
still feel a woman has a right to choose,<lb />
whether I agree with her reasoning<lb />
or not. I don't believe that 1, myself,<lb />
would ever have one, but it is the right<lb />
of every woman to have that choice. It<lb />
is also a much better thing for abortion<lb />
to be legal than for it to be outlawed,<lb />
which would risk hundreds, maybe<lb />
thousands of women's lives a year, due<lb />
to unsanitary tools and locations. Years<lb />
ago, abortions were being performed<lb />
by doctors, whose licenses had been<lb />
revoked for one reason or another, who<lb />
used mangled coat hangers to carry out<lb />
this deed. I would barely hesitate to say<lb />
that most people, whether they agree<lb />
with me or not, would agree it is better<lb />
to keep abortion legal.<lb />
I think that even though this man<lb />
thinks he knows he is doing what is<lb />
best for the younger generation, he<lb />
needs to open up his closed mind, and<lb />
for once, let in love, and stop the hate<lb />
from flowing out.<lb />
Freya Turppa<lb />
TEC Reader<lb />
Dear Editor,<lb />
This is in response to your "Fire-<lb />
brand preacher visits campus" article<lb />
in the Sept. 30 edition of TEC. I can<lb />
understand your disgust of the 6-foot<lb />
aborted baby picture. Though I was<lb />
not there to see it, me being a college<lb />
graduate who happened upon your<lb />
newspaper of sorts, via a coworker, I<lb />
can only imagine the stomach turning<lb />
experience.<lb />
But I have a couple of questions,<lb />
and I must warn you I am what you so<lb />
aptly called a "religious fundamentalist<lb />
bigot any other name you have for<lb />
Bible believing Christians That said, I<lb />
also want to assure you that, while I can<lb />
sense in your article that you, yourself<lb />
were aiming for a smaller shock factor<lb />
with the notion that anyone who<lb />
believes that the Bible is historical is a<lb />
fool (low-blow), I must say to you that<lb />
I have heard much harsher and more<lb />
cliche comments of my faith and that<lb />
you have not offended me. My ques-<lb />
tion is, were you more disgusted by the<lb />
enormity of such a gruesome picture<lb />
or the subject itself? Because abortion<lb />
is an ugly and gruesome thing. I have<lb />
felt that way even before I began my<lb />
journey with Christ. Another question,<lb />
are you a moral relativist? Because if<lb />
this Is the case, then my opinions and<lb />
ramblings are lost to you outside of the<lb />
movement of the Holy Spirit.<lb />
There is a huge difference between<lb />
seeing what you saw on your campus<lb />
and comparing it to the horrible acts<lb />
of terrorists in Iraq. One, killing babies<lb />
is legal and it happens everyday. What<lb />
the terrorists do, post Saddam, is illegal<lb />
and a cowards way of bargaining. The<lb />
only thing in common is death, killing<lb />
innocent lives. Either way, seeing it<lb />
large and close up has to be damaging<lb />
and the result of viewing such material<lb />
should cause action against such cruel<lb />
acts, don't you think?<lb />
Becki Buck<lb />
TEC Reader, New Bern<lb />
Dear Editor,<lb />
I am writing in response to Peter<lb />
Kalajian's Sept. 30 editorial about the<lb />
minister preaching on campus. He<lb />
attacks the man for being a bigoted<lb />
religious fundamentalist, yet in the<lb />
same editorial, he states every "reason-<lb />
able person" knows the Bible is not<lb />
historically accurate. Based on this,<lb />
I would assume Mr. Kalajian believes<lb />
that Christians aren't "reasonable"<lb />
people. That Is just as bigoted as any-<lb />
thing that Norman Morris preached on<lb />
campus and every Christian that read<lb />
the column should be offended.<lb />
1 find it funny that these left-<lb />
wingers claim to be the defenders of<lb />
civil liberties, but they are the first<lb />
ones to try to get someone to shut up<lb />
who has a conservative Christian point<lb />
of view.<lb />

'Shark Tale Hollywood attempt at teaching virtue<lb />
Stereotypes flow<lb />
throughout movie<lb />
JASON FREEMAN<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
What if all of Hollywood got<lb />
together to make an animated<lb />
movie? Undoubtedly, it would<lb />
include mobsters, as a salute<lb />
to classic movies like Goodfel-<lb />
las and The Godfather. It would<lb />
also likely have a closeted son<lb />
dealing with Issues of iden-<lb />
tity to teach tolerance and an<lb />
overabundance of ethnic ste-<lb />
reotypes to be more inclusive.<lb />
That's what you get when<lb />
you see Shark Tale, a new<lb />
animated feature provided<lb />
courtesy of Steven Spielberg, Jef-<lb />
frey Katzenberg and David Geffen.<lb />
Shark Tale is produced by<lb />
DreamWorks Animation, a divi-<lb />
sion of DreamWorks SKG. Shark<lb />
Tale is the latest film in a series of<lb />
animated hits from DreamWorks<lb />
that include Shrek and Shrek 2<lb />
- the highest grossing animated<lb />
film in history.<lb />
The film displays the talents<lb />
of Will Smith as the lovable liar<lb />
Oscar. Smith talks fast and brings<lb />
his unique brand of humor to the<lb />
film. His style harkens back to his<lb />
days on "The Fresh Prince of Bel-<lb />
Air when he could convince us<lb />
he was a struggling high school<lb />
student and not a multi-million-<lb />
aire recording artist. This film<lb />
would have afforded Smith the<lb />
opportunity to escape the hip-<lb />
hop image that limits so many<lb />
rapper turned actors if it wasn't<lb />
for the fact his character exuded<lb />
stereotypical characteristics,<lb />
such as a preference for gold<lb />
chains and making "white fish"<lb />
feel insecure.<lb />
Robert De Niro and Martin<lb />
Shark Tale makes a big splash<lb />
Scorcese also contribute their<lb />
talent. They provide the voices<lb />
for the mobster fish which<lb />
have Italian accents, but will<lb />
likely be defended as not having<lb />
any ethnicity when Italian-<lb />
American groups criticize yet<lb />
another inaccurate represen-<lb />
tation of their community.<lb />
No group is safe in this movie<lb />
and utterance of "Oy Vey" by De<lb />
Niro's character- Lino, the God-<lb />
father, rounds out the fictional<lb />
characters' "veiled" references to<lb />
real groups.<lb />
The plot of the movie encom-<lb />
passes the misadventures of<lb />
Oscar, a fish trying to achieve his<lb />
dreams of fame and fortune and<lb />
residence at the top of the reef.<lb />
He gets his opportunity when,<lb />
due to a strange twist of fate, he<lb />
is directly responsible for the<lb />
death of a great white shark who<lb />
happens to be the son of the all<lb />
sharks on the reef's leader. With<lb />
the help of the dead shark's inse-<lb />
cure brother Lenny, voiced by<lb />
Jack Black, and the loving disap-<lb />
proval of his secret admirerbest<lb />
friend Angie the angelfish, voiced<lb />
by Renee Zellweger, Oscar cha-<lb />
rades as "The Shark Slayer" until<lb />
he is forced to admit the truth<lb />
after he discovers he had every-<lb />
thing he ever needed from the<lb />
beginning. Oh, and everybody<lb />
lived happily ever after.<lb />
Deferring from my own opin-<lb />
ion and turning to the exper-<lb />
tise of my ten-year-old cousin,<lb />
Thomas, I asked how the movie<lb />
was.<lb />
"It was kinda good. It had<lb />
gushy love in it I hate gushy<lb />
love he said after leaving the<lb />
movie theater.<lb />
Despite his criticism, he did<lb />
laugh at various parts. However,<lb />
the adult themes and references,<lb />
such as Oscar telling Angie "You<lb />
had me at hello" ierry Moguire) and<lb />
Angie's mysterious discomfort at<lb />
the line, were lost on him entirely.<lb />
Despite the shortcom-<lb />
ings, the movie did have some<lb />
funny parts and the animation<lb />
looks amazing.<lb />
Bottom Line: Not really a<lb />
good film for young children,<lb />
but you would probably laugh,<lb />
just not all the way through and<lb />
probably for the wrong reasons.<lb />

Tim Cullen, polished talented singer with a new sound<lb />
New solo artist<lb />
releasing his new<lb />
album, 'Fun Razor1<lb />
CARMIN BLACK<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
"Great men are made to make<lb />
great music If this quote proves<lb />
true, then Tim Cullen is the new<lb />
"great man" in town.<lb />
This polished talent is the<lb />
former lead singersongwriter of<lb />
Summercamp, the once wildly<lb />
popular band known for tour-<lb />
ing with major artists such as<lb />
The Red Hot Chili Peppers, the<lb />
Foo Fighters and Rage Against<lb />
the Machine. Summercamp<lb />
unfortunately split In 2002.<lb />
Now going solo, Tim Cullen<lb />
has finally set a date to release his<lb />
much anticipated album entitled<lb />
Fun Razor through Los Ange-<lb />
les' well established Long Live<lb />
Crime Records.<lb />
Fun Razor is set to hit the<lb />
shelves of major record stores<lb />
October 5. Not to be alarmed by<lb />
the CD's title, Fun Razor is actu-<lb />
ally a highly energetic, fun and<lb />
in-depth compilation.<lb />
One of the appeals of Fun<lb />
Razor is it features many credible<lb />
guest musician spots, ranging<lb />
from Misha Feldman and Tony<lb />
Sevener of Summercamp to Luke<lb />
Therney of the Penfifteen Club<lb />
and Silver Jet, as well as Ben<lb />
Pringle of Nerf Herder.<lb />
Tim Cullen is now hitting the<lb />
road with his new material - he<lb />
has kissed the days of traveling<lb />
with bandmates goodbye and<lb />
has moved on to bigger things<lb />
for himself.<lb />
Now solo, Tim has found<lb />
himself tagging along with other<lb />
bands. This past summer, Cullen<lb />
traveled all over Japan playing<lb />
various gigs with Sugarcult and<lb />
Bowling for Soup.<lb />
. While in "The Land of the<lb />
Rising Sun Tim's music created<lb />
lots of hype. He was able to set<lb />
up a good fan base as is shown<lb />
by the fact that while there he<lb />
managed to sell 10,000 copies<lb />
of his record. He also received<lb />
rave reviews from many Japa-<lb />
nese pop music magazines such<lb />
as Snoozer, Rockin' On and<lb />
In Rock.<lb />
Cullen seems to have made a<lb />
great decision in his choosing to<lb />
go solo. Not only was he picked<lb />
up by a major label, Long Live<lb />
Crime Records, but he was also<lb />
able to work with producer Thorn<lb />
Flowers, who is known in the<lb />
music industry for working with<lb />
such names as Sugarcult, The<lb />
Ataris and Bad Astronaut.<lb />
"Being a solo artist is enabling<lb />
me to explore new paths beyond<lb />
what I could do when I was in a<lb />
band said Cullen.<lb />
It is evident when listen-<lb />
ing to Tim's new album, you<lb />
are hearing from someone<lb />
who not only loves what he is<lb />
doing, but has a real talent for<lb />
expressing how he feels in song.<lb />
Tim's talent is most evident<lb />
when listening to the words in<lb />
his songs. These days it's easy<lb />
for well known artists to put out<lb />
music that is simple and catchy,<lb />
since most record labels seem to<lb />
be more concerned with their<lb />
artists "looking the part rather<lb />
than really having the talent to<lb />
"sing the part However, with<lb />
the new trend of relying on your<lb />
image to make money, Cullen is<lb />
obviously going against the grain.<lb />
With songs like "All" from the<lb />
new album, Tim speaks of letting<lb />
go of his pride to be able to tell a<lb />
woman he is still in love with her.<lb />
Lyrifs like these set Cullen apart<lb />
from your everyday "boy band<lb />
This man obviously has a great<lb />
deal of talent that he is finally<lb />
having the chance to showcase.<lb />
"The songs of Fun Razor are an<lb />
eclectic part of my life which has<lb />
helped me find myself, perfect<lb />
my songwriting skills and create<lb />
music I love Cullen said.<lb />
Cullen's lyrics and catchy<lb />
beats will appeal to anyone<lb />
through this CD - it's easy to<lb />
relate to this man. He is putting<lb />
out in-depth material, while at<lb />
the same time not being afraid<lb />
to have fun, reveal his heart and<lb />
state how he feels.<lb />

Inside Charlotte Martin<lb />
REID DORSETT<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Charlotte Martin, the gifted<lb />
songwriter and pianist, recently<lb />
released On Your Shore. The emo-<lb />
tion provoking album is held<lb />
together by confessional lyrics<lb />
and captivating melodies. Pro-<lb />
duced by Ken Andrews (Air, Pete<lb />
Yorn) and Martin, the album is<lb />
on RCA Records.<lb />
The record is full of big cre-<lb />
scendos and soft love songs. It is<lb />
designed for everyone from goths<lb />
to beauty queens. She sings of<lb />
faith, love, hope and emotions<lb />
involved with everyday life.<lb />
She lays herself bare touching<lb />
listeners with truths and fears.<lb />
After the first time listening to<lb />
this album, it's difficult to put<lb />
anything else into the CD player.<lb />
It is a very connecting album<lb />
that relates to the emotions and<lb />
thoughts of listeners.<lb />
Martin also gives her all<lb />
during live shows. Her personal-<lb />
ity and musicianship overwhelm<lb />
the room, giving the audience<lb />
a sense of intimacy. Using the<lb />
chance to further connect with<lb />
fans, she keeps things conversa-<lb />
tional and even offering gifts to<lb />
the crowds on occasion. News-<lb />
papers such .is The Boston Globe<lb />
and The New York Times have<lb />
praised her shows saying she<lb />
gives an "unforgettable display<lb />
of emotion<lb />
Martin recently sang the song<lb />
"Bring on the Day" on the Sweet<lb />
Home Alabama soundtrack. Her<lb />
Charlotte Martin releases her inspirational album On Your Shore<lb />
music compares to others such<lb />
as Fiona Apple, Sarah McLachlan<lb />
and Kate Bush.<lb />
After finishing a tour with<lb />
Liz Phair, Martin is now ready<lb />
to start a small college tour with<lb />
singersongwriter Matt Nathan-<lb />
son. The adventure begins in<lb />
Toronto Oct. 4 and ends in<lb />
Cleveland Nov. 8. Sadly, she will<lb />
not be touring in North Caro-<lb />
lina this time, but plans to have<lb />
another nationwide tour soon.<lb />
Martin grew up in a small<lb />
college town and eventually went<lb />
to Eastern Illinois University,<lb />
where her father was a respected<lb />
professor, to study music. She<lb />
earned her bachelor's degree in<lb />
opera. For a time, she thought<lb />
she would be a professional opera<lb />
singer. However, at college, her<lb />
life changed drastically. While<lb />
living with her good friend<lb />
Raven, she experienced typical<lb />
college drama. Worse, she also<lb />
experienced two friends'<lb />
suicides, one being her boy-<lb />
friend's sister and her best friend.<lb />
She wrote one of her first songs<lb />
for her funeral. Anorexia also<lb />
overwhelmed part of her life,<lb />

DANIELLE WIGGINS<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
The highly anticipated album<lb />
debut is here. Ciara, Goodies, was<lb />
released Tuesday, Sept. 28 with<lb />
her chart topping single, "Good-<lb />

featured artists include: Missy<lb />
Elliot, Ludacris, R. Kelly, T.I. and<lb />
Jazze Pha. The album contains<lb />
12 hot tracks plus a bonus track<lb />
of "Goodies" featuring Jazze Pha<lb />
and T.I.<lb />
It doesn't matter whether you<lb />
are in the mood to dance or just<lb />
relax, this album was made for<lb />
you. If "Goodies is one of your<lb />
favorite songs to dance to then<lb />
there are plenty other singles<lb />
for you to practice your dancing<lb />
skills with songs like "Looking at<lb />
You "1,2 Step" and "Hotline<lb />
For those R. Kelly fans, there's<lb />
also a track called, "Next to<lb />

containing the unique styles and<lb />
sounds that many crave.<lb />
Buying this album will not be<lb />
a mistake - it's worth $14.99 plus<lb />
tax, unlike any other albums, this<lb />
album is jammed packed with<lb />
hot singles. The lethal combina-<lb />
tion of music produced by Jazze<lb />
Pha, Anthony "T.A Tate and<lb />
Henry "Noonie" Lee, and the<lb />
unique voice of Ciara is bound<lb />
to put the album number one<lb />
on the billboard charts. Who can<lb />
go wrong with songs produced<lb />
by Lil Jon.<lb />
New young artists are not<lb />
always guaranteed a long reign<lb />
in the music industry, this is<lb />
not the usual one hit wonder,<lb />
there is potential for this new<lb />
talented artist bringing both hot<lb />
dance moves and singing ability,<lb />
whose style is closely compared<lb />
to Aaliyah. It brings much more<lb />
attention to the audience to<lb />
watch all the talent an artist<lb />
has to offer. Many have tried to<lb />
pull the famous matrix move<lb />
in her video, although it would<lb />
be a lot safer to leave it all to<lb />
Ciara and just listen to this new<lb />
album. The album need not to<lb />
be burned or downloaded, you<lb />
may miss a little. The album'book<lb />
contains an autographed picture<lb />

'Going Public New self-help narrative on inside politics<lb />
ANGEL GONZALEZ<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Michael Gecan starts<lb />
his story in a New York City<lb />
neighborhood once called<lb />
"the beginning of the end of<lb />
civilization As an organizer<lb />
for the Industrial Areas Foun-<lb />
dation, Gecan was hired by<lb />
residents of this neighborhood<lb />
to help them save their com-<lb />
munity. He and the leaders<lb />
of the community took more<lb />
than 10 years fighting the NYC<lb />
politicians in a valiant struggle<lb />
against all of the obstacles<lb />
that it took to add 5,000 more<lb />
homes to this neighborhood.<lb />
Famous negotiations included<lb />
some with former NYC mayor,<lb />
Rudy Giuliani.<lb />
Using his extensive knowl-<lb />
edge of politics and philosophy,<lb />
Gecan writes an objective<lb />
narrative that doubles essen-<lb />
tially as a how-to guide for<lb />
anyone who wishes to make<lb />
a stand in their community.<lb />
The political power he uses in<lb />
this story tells readers how the<lb />
NYC government actually is<lb />
behind-the-scenes, as he spent<lb />
years upon years trying to work<lb />
with a church in the commu-<lb />
nity where its residents wanted<lb />
better homes and quality of life<lb />
to live in.<lb />
He shows, using the power<lb />
of the written word, how any-<lb />
body who has the mindset<lb />
of being a leader can succeed<lb />
in changing a community<lb />
and grasp the ability to move<lb />
unmovable bureaucracies.<lb />
Gecan's vision of the value<lb />
of public action dates back to<lb />
his very rough and disturbing<lb />
childhood in a Catholic elemen-<lb />
tary school in Chicago, where<lb />
he witnessed a tragic fire in his<lb />
school that claimed the lives<lb />
of 92 children and three nuns.<lb />
Gecan's story is indeed an<lb />
inspiring one, however, due<lb />
to lack of publicity, and the<lb />
appearance of the book as<lb />
another boring how-to guide<lb />
with Chicken Soup for the Soul-<lb />
style stories on success. My<lb />
first thought of this book<lb />
was how it could possibly be<lb />
interesting when our current<lb />
state of politics is anything but<lb />
interesting until propaganda<lb />
sets in.<lb />
The book itself isn't very<lb />
long. As a true-to-life story of<lb />
how to get things done in a<lb />
society of corruption, it's very<lb />
interesting in the little amount<lb />
of pages it has to show for it.<lb />
In fact, it plays out more like<lb />
a novel told in first person<lb />
with many references to other<lb />
situations in the third person.<lb />
As a how-to guide, the<lb />
book runs like a textbook<lb />
without questions, showing<lb />
complete real-life examples<lb />
on how to achieve effectively,<lb />
certain goals involving loads<lb />
of red tape on the local level.<lb />
As a how-to guide, it certainly<lb />
lacks in visual aid to help<lb />
distinguish what on earth<lb />
the man is talking about.<lb />
Since the book's genre<lb />
is politics and social action,<lb />
it comes as no surprise that<lb />
should be really big words and<lb />
phrases in this piece such as<lb />
"political idolators in which<lb />
this word he made up due to a<lb />
definition given to him about<lb />
people who make idols out of<lb />
political officials. In fact, there<lb />
are so many names and terms<lb />
to remember to understand the<lb />
complexity of this book that<lb />
there is (solely for the readers'<lb />
benefits) a fully catalogued<lb />
index of events, names and<lb />
terms that appear in the book.<lb />
I have been given mixed<lb />
feelings about this book.<lb />
Anyone reading this book<lb />
will see the inspiration the<lb />
man had to finish his task no<lb />
matter how many years it took.<lb />
However, as political as it is,<lb />
it can only seem as inter-<lb />
esting as the movie Ant-<lb />
wone Fisher, where it seems<lb />
like it could be made into a<lb />
movie, but it isn't interesting.<lb />
 The corruption the book<lb />
brings out in NYC politics<lb />
can very well be compared to<lb />
Michael Moore's latest contro-<lb />
versial documentary, Fahrenheit<lb />
911 weaseling out political<lb />
scandal and using propaganda<lb />
to unleash the fact that our<lb />
government as it is sucks and<lb />
needs to be changed. However,<lb />
true or untrue that statement<lb />
may be, Gecan's story with the<lb />
subplot of uncovering the evils<lb />
of NYC politicians has failed,<lb />
mainly because the book was<lb />
released a little late only to<lb />
discover that Rudy Giuliani is<lb />
no longer mayor and his board<lb />
of advisors and trustees are out<lb />
of power in NYC.<lb />
As a literary medium, I<lb />
would highly recommend<lb />
this book to people majoring<lb />
in political science looking to<lb />
create some views to uphold.<lb />
As an anytime, read-for-fun<lb />

Earnhardt loses<lb />

NASCAR star Dale Earnhardt Jr.<lb />
was knocked out of first place<lb />
in the Nextel Cup by a slip of the<lb />

25 points and fined $10,000<lb />
by NASCAR on Tuesday for<lb />
cursing during a TV interview<lb />
after his victory at Talladega<lb />
Supers peedway.<lb />
Now. instead of leading Kurt<lb />
Busch by 13 points in the Nextel<lb />
Cup standings, Earnhardt, the<lb />
son of the late seven-time series<lb />
champion Dale Earnhardt, trails<lb />
by 12 with seven races left in the<lb />
season. Richie Gilmore, director<lb />
of competition for Dale Earnhardt<lb />
Inc said the team will appeal<lb />
NASCAR's decision. Pointing out<lb />
that Junior's comments were<lb />
not made In anger, Gilmore said<lb />
the team has received hundred<lb />
of supportive calls from fans.<lb />
Appeals are heard by a three-<lb />
person panel selected by<lb />
NASCAR from the National Stock<lb />
Car Racing Commission. No<lb />
date has been set for the appeal.<lb />
Earnhardt will still be credited<lb />
with the 14th victory of his career<lb />
and fifth at Talladega but, with the<lb />
points penalty, It's as if he finished<lb />
fifth on Sunday. Still, he has plenty<lb />

Pippen retires<lb />
Scottle Pippen announced his<lb />
retirement from the Chicago Bulls,<lb />
the team he and Michael Jordan<lb />
led to six NBA titles in the 1990s.<lb />
Pippen, 39, voted one of the NBA's<lb />
50 greatest players in 1996 In a<lb />
poll commemorating the league's<lb />
50th anniversary, was known for<lb />
his all-around play - especially<lb />
his defense against some of the<lb />
league's best scorers. Pippen<lb />
was brought back to Chicago last<lb />
season to give a young Bulls team<lb />
leadership and experience, but he<lb />
had knee surgery in December<lb />
and played in only 23 games as<lb />
the Bulls went 23-59. It was the<lb />
first time in his career the seven-<lb />
time All-Star had missed the<lb />
playoffs. After his championship<lb />
years with the Bulls, Pippen was<lb />
traded to Houston in 1999 after<lb />
the lockout, played one season<lb />
with the Rockets and then spent<lb />
four years In Portland. He signed<lb />
a two-year, $10 million deal to<lb />
return to Chicago and averaged<lb />

Mike McKenzle got his wish<lb />
Monday, seven months after<lb />
asking out of Green Bay. The<lb />
Packers sent the disruptive<lb />
cornerback to the New Orleans<lb />
Saints for a second-round draft<lb />
pick In 2005 and a backup<lb />
quarterback. Since ending his<lb />
holdout without retracting his<lb />
trade request three weeks ago,<lb />
McKenzie had been paid more<lb />
than $485,000, but played just<lb />
nine snaps, all against Chicago,<lb />
because of a puzzling hamstring<lb />
injury that led fans and some<lb />
teammates to wonder whether he<lb />
was still holding out, but getting<lb />
paid anyway. Rosenhaus said<lb />
McKenzle will play under the<lb />
terms of his current contract, but<lb />
hopes to have talks with Loomis<lb />
soon about an upgrade. The<lb />
Packers acquired quarterback<lb />
JT. O'Sulllvan and the pick for<lb />
McKenzie and a future conditional<lb />
sixth-round draft choice. The<lb />
Packers have been interested in<lb />
O'Sullivan since the Saints took<lb />

Three of Major League Base-<lb />

made it to the League Champi-<lb />

unforgettable moments. Who<lb />

the Marlins Josh Beckett's acces-<lb />

postseason pitchers couldn't<lb />
have been more dramatic. Base-<lb />
ball fans can only hope for this<lb />
postseason to be as exciting as<lb />
last year's.<lb />
This year, the Yankees and<lb />
Red Sox will be back in the post-<lb />
season, but the underachieving<lb />
Cubs and the defendirtg cham-<lb />
pion Marlins will not be back.<lb />
The Astros and Angels, two teams<lb />
who had high expectations to<lb />
contend, looked on the verge of<lb />
collapse during June and July,<lb />
are now able to get back into<lb />
contention in spectacular fash-<lb />
ion. The most surprising team,<lb />
the Cardinals, have turned into<lb />
a powerhouse and no one wants<lb />
to face them. Bobby Cox was<lb />
able to orchestrate another NL<lb />
East Title for the Braves, but for<lb />
some reason the postseason never<lb />
seems kind to them. The Twins<lb />
and Dodgers also field strong<lb />
teams.<lb />

Twins vs. Yankees<lb />
The Twins, who were on the<lb />
verge of contraction a few years<lb />
ago, are back in the postseason<lb />
for the third straight year. They<lb />
now have an undisputable ace<lb />
in Johan Santana who pitched<lb />
lights out during the regular<lb />
season, compiling a 20-6 record<lb />
with a 2.62 ERA. The Yankees,<lb />
postseason regulars, are loaded<lb />
with hitters and Gary Sheffield,<lb />
who came from the Braves during<lb />
the off-season, is having another<lb />
MVP caliber year. This should be<lb />
a very good series - a rematch<lb />
from last year's ALDS, but the<lb />
Yankees' offensive firepower,<lb />
and their solid pitching,<lb />
not to mention "Mr. Post-<lb />
season closer Mariano Rivera,<lb />

Red Sox vs. Angels<lb />
This should be a fun series.<lb />
The Angels have one of baseball's<lb />
most talented and unheralded<lb />
players in Vladimir Guerrero and<lb />
they have been red hot going into<lb />
the postseason. They hope for<lb />
some of the same success they<lb />
had in 2002 when they were able<lb />
to advance to the World Series<lb />
and win it all. The Red Sox, vic-<lb />
tims of bad luck last year, hope to<lb />
get one step further than they did<lb />
last postseason. Curt Shilling has<lb />
become the ace of their pitching<lb />
staff and if Pedro Martinez can<lb />
get things back together the Red<lb />
Sox will be tough to beat. I see<lb />
this series going the<lb />
distance with Red Sox pitching,<lb />
timely hitting and solid defense<lb />
giving them another trip to the<lb />
ALCS to face their nemesis.<lb />
Red Sox In Five<lb />
NL Division Series<lb />
Dodgers vs. Cardinals<lb />
This series may finally get the<lb />
Cardinals some much-needed<lb />
attention and respect. They had<lb />
baseball's best record during the<lb />
regular season and they probably<lb />
field the best all around team in<lb />
the majors. They have three legit-<lb />
imate MVP candidates in Albert<lb />

Although the PurpleGold<lb />

is not a race to be taken lightly.<lb />
"It's a real important meet<lb />
for the freshmen to learn about<lb />

STAFF WRITER<lb />
With no seniors this year, the<lb />
ECU volleyball team has been<lb />
forced to look to their five juniors<lb />
for experience. So far, they've<lb />
stepped up and taken the role of<lb />
leader. Three of ECU's top four kill<lb />
leaders have been juniors, not to<lb />
mention junior Johanna Bertini<lb />
leading the team with more than<lb />
200 digs just midway through the<lb />
season. With the great teamwork<lb />
and leadership displayed by ECU,<lb />
one junior in particular has been<lb />
able to step her game up to a<lb />
whole new level, Paige Howell.<lb />
Standing at 6-feet, 2-inches<lb />
Howell has provided a spark<lb />
to ECU's offense and defense,<lb />
whether by spiking a kill or<lb />
blocking the ball. With her<lb />
aggressive playing style, Howell<lb />
adds a new physical aspect up<lb />
front on the court.<lb />
"Paige Howell has contributed<lb />
significantly to the team said<lb />

"She is a tremendous player<lb />

an early age.<lb />
"My sister played and I sort of<lb />

She first started playing for<lb />
school in 1997. In her second<lb />
year, Howell helped her high<lb />
school to a Class 3A state cham-<lb />
pionship. It was the same year<lb />
in which she received all-confer-<lb />
ence honors. The following year,<lb />
she was named the Big Eight Con-<lb />

After high school, Howell<lb />
attended Pitt Community Col-<lb />

her team to two conference<lb />
championships in 2001 and<lb />
2002. She was also named the<lb />
Region X Tournament Most<lb />
Valuable Player in 2001. In 2003,<lb />
Howell transferred from PCC to<lb />
ECU where she was red-shirted<lb />
her first year.<lb />
Howell has been able to step<lb />
up her game for ECU. This year<lb />
alone, Howell has the highest<lb />
hitting percentage of the Lady<lb />
Pirates, posting .346. She also<lb />
ranks third on the team for<lb />
kills with 172, averaging 2.87 a<lb />
game. In the Pirate Invitational<lb />
earlier this season, Howell was<lb />
able to showcase her talent set-<lb />
ting a career high 24 kill match<lb />
against Mercer. The performance<lb />
led Howell to be the only ECU<lb />
player named to the all-tourna-<lb />

Despite her aggressive nature<lb />
on the court, Howell insists she's<lb />
laid back. Instead of getting<lb />
pumped up before games, she<lb />
distends herself from the other<lb />
players to get focused.<lb />

Conference USA championships on<lb />
the horizon.<lb />
On the women's side, Allen<lb />
Allen<lb />
was supported by strong races<lb />
from Jessica Collins and Cait-<lb />
lin Littlefield that aided in the<lb />
Pirate women's sixth placing<lb />
showing. Collins placed sixth<lb />
with a time of 18:45.54 and Lit-<lb />
tlefield posted a time of 19:51.34,<lb />
which was good for a 31st<lb />
place finish.<lb />
Freshman Hayley Flynn,<lb />
whom has been a "pleasant<lb />
surprise" according to Catania,<lb />
finished fourth on the team and<lb />
50th in the individual standings<lb />
with a time of 20:39.33.<lb />
Junior Megan Walling<lb />
MacKenzie<lb />
rounded out the scoring for the<lb />
Pirate women.<lb />
The Pirates will return to<lb />
action Oct. 16 when they host the<lb />
State ChampionshipsRegional<lb />
Preview at Lake Kristi. Many of<lb />
the state's and region's best teams<lb />
are expected to be in attendance<lb />
and the race,should be a good<lb />
warmup for both squads as they<lb />
prepare for the C-USA champi-<lb />
onships to be held Oct. 30 in<lb />
Chicago, 111.<lb />

Cardinals In three<lb />
Astros vs. Braves<lb />
After some awful playing<lb />
earlier in the season, which<lb />
produced then manager Jimy<lb />
Williams' exit, the Astros finally<lb />
started playing up to their high<lb />
expectations. At 42 years old,<lb />
Roger Clemens is amazing. He<lb />
had yet another Cy Young caliber<lb />
season in which he went 18-4<lb />
with a 2.98 ERA. The Astros also<lb />
feature some good veteran play-<lb />
ers who have been in the playoffs<lb />
before. The Braves started out<lb />
slowly, but then got on track<lb />
and turned their solid run into<lb />
yet another NL East title, their<lb />
13th straight. The Braves are<lb />
lead by pitcher Jaret Wright and<lb />
center fielder Andruw Jones, and<lb />
yes, John Smoltz is still there<lb />
too. I think this will be a good<lb />
series with the Astros' strong<lb />
pitching rotation and their<lb />
veteran leadership being too<lb />
much for the young Braves to<lb />
handle.<lb />
Astros In four<lb />
World Series Prediction<lb />
Yankees vs. Cards<lb />
I see the two teams with<lb />
the best regular season records<lb />
meeting in the "Fall Classic<lb />
The Yankees will be able to get<lb />
past the Red Sox in the ALCS,<lb />
and the Cardinals will be able<lb />
to overcome the Astros in the<lb />
NLCS. It will definitely be an<lb />
exciting match with two sto-<lb />
ried franchises going head to<lb />
head. I see the Cardinals<lb />
finally getting the respect<lb />
they deserve.<lb />
