ECU, UNC officials celebrate<lb />
Rivers Building expansion<lb />
The ECU community<lb />
celebrated the completion of<lb />
the Thomas W. Rivers Building<lb />
expansion Sept. 11 with a ribbon<lb />
cutting ceremony.<lb />
UNC President Molly<lb />
Corbett Broad and UNC Board<lb />
of Governors Vice Chairman J.<lb />
Craig Souza congratulated ECU<lb />
leaders on their latest<lb />
achievement and pointed<lb />
to the Rivers Building as<lb />
just one example of the<lb />
momentum building in eastern<lb />
North Carolina.<lb />
"This is a wonderful part<lb />
of the new era of transforma-<lb />
tion and rebuilding of ECU. It<lb />
really was the bond vote cast so<lb />
overwhelmingly by the<lb />
citizens of North Carolina that<lb />
has been instrumental in this<lb />
transformation said Broad.<lb />
The $11.9 million project,<lb />
paid for by the $190 million ECU<lb />
received in 2000 as part of the<lb />
North Carolina Higher Education<lb />
Facilities Bond program, pro-<lb />
vides 38,000 square feet of new<lb />
classroom and faculty office space<lb />
for the school of nursing and the<lb />
college of human ecology.<lb />
ECU Chancellor Steve<lb />
Ballard said the completion of<lb />
the Rivers Building would help<lb />
contribute to the quality of the<lb />
university's academic pro-<lb />
grams, as well as respond to the<lb />
continuing demand for space as<lb />
enrollment figures rise.<lb />
"This is just one indicator<lb />
of a vibrant, growing academic<lb />
community that will make a<lb />
significant difference to ECU and<lb />
to the state of North Carolina<lb />
Ballard said.<lb />
"This is a university that has<lb />
huge growth potential, and we<lb />
want to make sure we have the<lb />
resources and academic spaces<lb />
available. The Rivers Building<lb />
is just one sign that this is pos-<lb />
sible<lb />
The building reopened<lb />
just before the start of the fall<lb />
2004 semester and is home<lb />
to the school of nursing and<lb />
a number of schools within<lb />
the college of human ecology,<lb />
including: child development and<lb />
family relations, interior<lb />
design and merchandising,<lb />
criminal justice, social work<lb />
and nutrition and hospitality<lb />
management.<lb />
Built in 1968, the building<lb />
was named for longtime ECU<lb />
advocate Thomas W. Rivers,<lb />
who in 1987, made the first<lb />
$1 million contribution to ECU<lb />
for academic purposes.<lb />

Ballantine, seeking support and recognition for his campaign, greets and answers questions of various ECU personnel.<lb />
Republican nominee<lb />
presents his plans to<lb />
improve North Carolina<lb />
NICK HENNE<lb />
NEWS EDITOR<lb />
Patrick Ballantine,<lb />
Republican nominee for North<lb />
Carolina Governor delivered a<lb />
brief speech<lb />
outside the<lb />
Wright Audi-<lb />
torium on<lb />
ECU'S campus<lb />
Monday<lb />
afternoon and<lb />
presented his plans to improve<lb />
the lives of North Carolina<lb />
residents.<lb />
Ballantine said he plans<lb />
on securing jobs for people in<lb />
North Carolina helping to ensure<lb />
college students are given decent<lb />
employment opportunities<lb />
after graduation.<lb />
"I know that when you get<lb />
out of school you're going to need<lb />
a good job, you're going to care<lb />
about trying to make a living and<lb />
pay the bills and we're going to<lb />
need new vibrant bold leadership<lb />
in North Carolina to get that<lb />
done said Ballantine.<lb />
"We are truly at a crossroads<lb />
in our state and we have to decide<lb />
if we want to be the best in the<lb />
south<lb />
Ballantine said he hopes that<lb />
young people are inspired to get<lb />
involved with the upcoming<lb />
elections because it is about their<lb />
future and the future of North<lb />
Carolina.<lb />
He said he encourages all<lb />
young people to pay attention to<lb />
the election, and visit his Web site<lb />
at Ballantineforgovernor.com.<lb />
Ballantine said he is aware<lb />
of the opportunities here in<lb />
Greenville with ECU and the new<lb />
cardiovascular center.<lb />
"ECU is the largest economic<lb />
engine in the east we have to<lb />
make sure that its running on all<lb />
cylinders Ballantine said.<lb />
Health care is a<lb />
growing industry and we want<lb />
to make sure ECU is a leader in<lb />
health care in the state and the<lb />
country he said. Medicaid is out<lb />
of control, we have to modernize<lb />
the system.<lb />
"We need to shift money<lb />
around in the Medicaid system<lb />
so that it can actually deliver<lb />
the services to the poor and<lb />
disabled Ballantine said.<lb />
One of the major Issues<lb />
he plans on addressing is<lb />
improving jobs. He plans on<lb />
creating a business plan in North<lb />
Carolina to provide hope and<lb />
opportunity to anyone who<lb />
wants to excel.<lb />
"I have a comprehensive plan<lb />
that will lower taxes, improve<lb />
education, improve roads and<lb />
deliver health care at an afford-<lb />
able cost Ballantine said.<lb />
"Those are key components<lb />
of a business plan that I have to<lb />
make sure that we can complete,<lb />
to make sure we can bring new<lb />
jobs to our state<lb />
Sam Davis, former candidate<lb />
for the first congressional district<lb />
in eastern North Carolina said<lb />
Ballantine is aware of the prob-<lb />
lems faced by eastern North<lb />
Carolina and what needs to be<lb />
addressed.<lb />
Davis said Ballantine shares<lb />
the conservative values of east-<lb />
ern North Carolina and his<lb />
message is resonating with<lb />
conservative democrats in<lb />
eastern North Carolina with his<lb />
message of cutting taxes and<lb />
fiscal responsibility.<lb />
Governor Easley has with-<lb />
held reimbursements including<lb />
tangible, inventory, food sales,<lb />
taxes. This had a large impact<lb />
on the smaller cities of North<lb />
Carolina<lb />
"I think he will do a great<lb />
deal of good in eastern North<lb />
Carolina Davis said.<lb />
Diane Miller, graduate stu-<lb />
dent of ECU and the president<lb />
of the College Republicans said<lb />
Ballantine is very much aware of<lb />
ECU education initiatives, and<lb />
plans on helping ECU succeed.<lb />
He is also knowledgeable about<lb />
the state of North Carolina's<lb />
problems and what must be done<lb />
to overcome them.<lb />
Kyle Jones, sophomore<lb />
political science major said his<lb />
father is a small business owner<lb />
and supports Ballantine for his<lb />
tax and health care plans.<lb />
"Small businesses would<lb />
definitely be better under Patrick<lb />
Ballantine said Jones.<lb />

"It's challenging, but fun<lb />

Steve Ballard, ECU'S chancel-<lb />

ECU student killed<lb />
in bicycle accident<lb />
HAWKINS<lb />
space needs.<lb />
Hawkins said ECU has a large<lb />
enrollment projected, which he<lb />
calls a good problem.<lb />
According to Hawkins, ECU is<lb />
hiring new faculty all the time to<lb />
accompany these students. This<lb />
year, 97 new faculty members<lb />
were added.<lb />
He said ECU is currently con-<lb />
sidering turning Slay Residence<lb />
Hall into office space and build-<lb />
ing additional residence halls.<lb />
Hawkins graduated from the<lb />
University of Michigan. He also<lb />
worked there as assistant associ-<lb />

ECU about five years ago taking<lb />
the associate vice chancellor<lb />
position. He was named senior<lb />
vice chancellor in July 2002.<lb />
Positions for senior vice<lb />
chancellor and vice chancellor<lb />
are currently vacant, and Ballard<lb />
Is conducting a search to fill those<lb />
positions.<lb />
ECU students expressed<lb />
their own opinions of what areas<lb />
of campus needed the most<lb />
work.<lb />
Nlkki Graham, health fitness<lb />
major, said she would rather see<lb />
money be used to Improve ECU'S<lb />
parking situation.<lb />
"I think parking here is abso-<lb />
lutely terrible for students I'd<lb />
rather have a parking deck said<lb />
Graham.<lb />
Other students complained<lb />
about the lack of air condition-<lb />
ing in the dorms and need of<lb />
additional space in buildings on<lb />
campus.<lb />
Ashley Smith, criminal justice<lb />
major said classrooms, especially<lb />
in Brewster, should be bigger.<lb />
"There's not enough chairs<lb />
everyone's really compact<lb />
said Smith.<lb />
Matt London, criminal jus-<lb />
tice major thinks some buildings<lb />
should be expanded for efficiency<lb />
reasons.<lb />
"Expand the financial aid<lb />
building so you don't have to<lb />
stand in line for four and a half<lb />
hours said London.<lb />

Condoleezza Rice visits two<lb />
North Carolina colleges<lb />
CHARLOTTE, NC (AP) - National<lb />
Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice<lb />
visited two North Carolina universities<lb />
Monday, including the historically<lb />
black college that her father attended<lb />
in the 1940s.<lb />
Speaking to students at Johnson C<lb />
Smith University, Rice said she felt<lb />
at home.<lb />
"I can feel that it kept the same heart<lb />
and soul that it had when my father<lb />
when here, and I remember as a little<lb />
girl she said. Her father, John Rice,<lb />
graduated from the college in 1946.<lb />
"I am a big supporter of historically<lb />
black colleges Rice said in a<lb />
speech. They provided educational<lb />
opportunities at a time when no one<lb />
else would for black Americans<lb />
Rice, who also spoke later Monday<lb />
at Wingate University's Austin<lb />
Auditorium as part of that school's<lb />
Jesse Helms lecture series, told the<lb />
Johnson C. Smith students that her<lb />
father's generation eventually led the<lb />
civil rights struggle in the 1960s.<lb />
Her mother also attended a<lb />
historically black college in Alabama.<lb />
Rice assumed the position of national<lb />
security adviser in 2001. A professor<lb />
of political science, she served on<lb />
Stanford University's faculty, starting<lb />
in 1981, and served six years as<lb />
provost.<lb />
Bowles unveils health care plan<lb />
to Charlotte voters<lb />
CHARLOTTE, NC (AP) - Democratic<lb />
Senate candidate Erskine Bowles<lb />
toured in support of his health care<lb />
reform proposal Tuesday, calling it a<lb />
"moral issue" that he plans to tackle<lb />
immediately if elected in November.<lb />
"I want to champion this cause<lb />
Bowles said after he addressed<lb />
about 40 supporters outside the<lb />
Grace Medical Clinic, a newfy-opened<lb />
facility providing care for the needy.<lb />
"I think I can bring people from both<lb />
sides of the aisle together.<lb />
This is not a Democratic issue or a<lb />
Republican issue Bowles added.<lb />
"It's an American issue. And we have<lb />
a crisis on our hands"<lb />
Bowles, a Charlotte businessman<lb />
who is faces Republican U.S. Rep.<lb />
Richard Burr in the Nov. 2 general<lb />
election, highlighted some of the ideas<lb />
contained in a 16-page brochure, "A<lb />
Health Care Plan for North Carolina<lb />
that he released Monday. Bowles<lb />
spent Monday and Tuesday touring<lb />
the state to publicize the plan.<lb />
"We don't have a health care crisis<lb />

Suspect in slaying two NYC<lb />

police union wants man to face<lb />
death penalty<lb />
NEW YORK (AP) - Slumped in a<lb />
wheelchair in a courtroom packed<lb />
with mourning police officers, the<lb />
man accused of killing two veteran<lb />
detectives with one of their pistols<lb />
pleaded not guilty to first-degree<lb />
murder charges Monday afternoon.<lb />
Prosecutors cannot seek the death<lb />
penalty for Marlon Legere, 28,<lb />
because of a June ruling by New<lb />
York's highest court that found a key<lb />
element of the state's death penalty<lb />
law was unconstitutional, prosecutor<lb />
Kenneth Taub said.<lb />
Outside the courtroom in downtown<lb />
Brooklyn, police union officials said<lb />
the killing of Detectives Robert Parker,<lb />
43, and Patrick Rafferty, 39, cried out<lb />
for the death penalty, and they called<lb />
on the Legislature to amend the law.<lb />
The death penalty should have been<lb />
in place said Patrick Lynch, president<lb />
of the Patrolmen's Benevolent<lb />
Association. "We have to fix that<lb />
problem<lb />
A spokeswoman for Gov. George<lb />
Pataki said death penalty legislation,<lb />
which has passed the Senate but<lb />
not the Assembly, could apply<lb />
retroactively in pending cases<lb />
including Legere's. But Legere's<lb />
court-appointed attorney, Wayne<lb />
Bodden, said he did not believe a new<lb />
law could apply to his case.<lb />

Eva Schicke (SHY-kee) died Sunday<lb />

Protester dressed as Batman<lb />
scales Buckingham Palace In<lb />
embarrassment for security<lb />
LONDON (AP) - Holy intruder! A<lb />
protester dressed in a Batman<lb />
costume scaled the front wall of<lb />
Buckingham Palace on Monday and<lb />
perched for more than five hours on<lb />
a ledge near the balcony where the<lb />
royal family appears on ceremonial<lb />
occasions.<lb />
The protester's success in climbing<lb />
the wall in front of the queen's<lb />
main residence prompted fresh<lb />
questions about the much-criticized<lb />
and recently overtiauled royal security<lb />
operation.<lb />
"It's not good enough and we<lb />
want to know how this happened<lb />
Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir<lb />
John Stevens told British Broadcasting<lb />
Corp. radio.<lb />
Two police officers in a cherry-picker<lb />
crane removed the protester, Jason<lb />
Hatch, from the ledge at about 7:15<lb />
p.m 5 12 hours after he climbed<lb />
up. His Batman mask removed and<lb />
a white helmet placed on his head,<lb />
he waved and clapped as the crane<lb />
lowered him to the ground.<lb />
Hatch, 33, from Gloucester, is a<lb />
member of the Fathers 4 Justice<lb />
group, which is campaigning for<lb />
greater custody rights for divorced<lb />
or separated fathers and has staged<lb />
a number of prominent stunts to<lb />
promote their cause.<lb />
No member of the royal family was at<lb />
the palace Monday. Queen Elizabeth<lb />
II was at her Balmoral residence in<lb />
Scotland.<lb />
Celebrating 150 years of their<lb />
national anthem, Mexicans plan<lb />
worldwide sing-along<lb />
MEXICO CITY (AP) - Warning: If a co-<lb />
worker or stranger suddenly jumps up<lb />
and starts singing Wednesday, don't<lb />
be alarmed. They aren't crazy. They<lb />
are just Mexicans participating in a<lb />
worldwide call to song to celebrate<lb />
150 years of their national anthem.<lb />
An ad campaign is calling on all<lb />
Mexicans - wherever they are - to<lb />
stop what they are doing at noon<lb />
Wednesday (1 p.m. EDT), the eve of<lb />
Mexico's Independence Day, and sing<lb />
the rousing ode to war and country.<lb />
While the campaign is primarily<lb />
aimed at celebrating the anthem, it<lb />
has another motive: uniting a country<lb />
increasingly divided by everything<lb />
from politics to crime.<lb />
"There is a crisis of dishonesty,<lb />
fragmentation, crime said Erwin<lb />
Salas Juarez, a spokesman for the<lb />
nonprofit council organizing the<lb />
campaign. "We have to unite society<lb />
Organizers hope that on Wednesday,<lb />
offices will grind to a halt in the<lb />
capital, Mexicans visiting the Eiffel<lb />
Tower will stop taking photos, and<lb />
farmers will look up from their fields<lb />
to join in the anthem's first words:<lb />

ASHEVILLE, NC (AP) <lb />
Drinking water continued to be<lb />
a major issue Monday in western<lb />
North Carolina, where state<lb />
health officials said residents<lb />
should continue boiling their<lb />
water for another day.<lb />
The remnants of Hurricane<lb />
Frances - a tropical depression<lb />
by the time it reached North<lb />
Carolina last week - dumped up<lb />
to 16 inches of rain in western<lb />
North Carolina, flooding some<lb />
water systems.<lb />
Some Asheville residents<lb />
haven't had water in their taps<lb />
since Wednesday, when flood-<lb />
ing knocked out the city water<lb />
system.<lb />
Crews began restoring water<lb />
service Saturday, and the lines to<lb />
east Asheville and Black Moun-<lb />
tain were restored Monday. Ser-<lb />
vice was expected to be restored<lb />
gradually to those areas.<lb />
Most of the city's 100,000<lb />
customers had water, but areas of<lb />
Candler were dry because a large<lb />
tank was filling slowly. Custom-<lb />
ers on the far end of Leicester<lb />
Highway also had no water.<lb />
The State Department of Envi-<lb />
ronment and Natural Resources<lb />
said Monday that customers<lb />
of the Regional Water Author-<lb />
ity of Asheville and Buncombe<lb />
and Henderson counties<lb />
should bring water to a full,<lb />
rolling boil for one minute<lb />
before consuming.<lb />
Residents who cannot boil<lb />
the water should add plain house-<lb />
hold bleach (which is 4 percent<lb />
to 6 percent chlorine) using one-<lb />
fourth teaspoon per one gallon.<lb />
Shake the water and let it stand<lb />
for 30 minutes, after which water<lb />
should have a slight bleach odor.<lb />
Pregnant women should use<lb />
bottled water, which also should<lb />
be used for baby formula, state<lb />
health officials said.<lb />
Car bomb kills at least 47 near Iraqi police<lb />
BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) A<lb />
car bomb exploded near a<lb />
police station in Baghdad early<lb />
Tuesday as dozens of Iraqis<lb />
were applying to join the force,<lb />
killing at least 47 people and<lb />
wounding 114, officials said. In<lb />
Baqouba, gunmen opened fire on<lb />
a van carrying policemen home<lb />
from work, killing 11 officers and<lb />
a civilian.<lb />
The attacks were the<lb />
latest attempts by insurgents to<lb />
disrupt U.Sbacked efforts to<lb />
build a strong Iraqi police force<lb />
capable of taking over<lb />
security in many towns and cities<lb />
ahead of nationwide elections<lb />
slated for January.<lb />
In Baghdad, the blast<lb />
left a gaping 10-foot crater out-<lb />
side the station at the end of<lb />
Haifa street, a main Baghdad<lb />
thoroughfare that has been<lb />
the scene recently of fierce<lb />
clashes. Dozens of cars<lb />
parked nearby were destroyed<lb />
and shops and buildings were<lb />
badly damaged.<lb />
Paramedics and residents<lb />
picked up body parts scat-<lb />
tered across the street and put<lb />
them into boxes. Anguished<lb />
men lifted charred bodies and lay<lb />
them gently on stretchers.<lb />
Health Ministry<lb />
spokesman Saad Al-Amili said at<lb />
least 47 people were killed and<lb />
114 wounded.<lb />
An Interior Ministry offi-<lb />
cial said on condition of ano-<lb />
nymity that a suicide bomber<lb />
detonated an explosives-packed<lb />
sedan next to a cafe by the police<lb />
station where many would-be<lb />
recruits had gone to escape the<lb />
summer heat.<lb />
Angry crowds near the<lb />
site of the blast denounced<lb />
U.S. forces and interim Iraqi<lb />
Prime Minister Ayad Allawi's<lb />
government for failing<lb />
to protect police recruiting<lb />

AMANDA Q. UNGERFELT Editor In Chief WEDNESDAY September 15, 2004<lb />
i<lb />
Our View<lb />
So often in popular culture, people become<lb />
famous for the most undeserving reasons like<lb />
court cases, lawsuits and reality shows, just to<lb />
name a few.<lb />
But perhaps one of the most undeserving<lb />
people to achieve this "celebrity status" is the<lb />
former New York Times reporter, Jayson Blair.<lb />
Blair became infamous for plagiarizing and<lb />
lying in more than a dozen 77mes articles during<lb />
a period of eight months.<lb />
Shortly after the scandal was revealed to the<lb />
public, both the Times' executive editor and<lb />
managing editor also resigned from their posi-<lb />
tions.<lb />
So how does Blair make good of a situation<lb />
that not only ruined his career, but the careers<lb />
of others? He publishes a book titled, Burning<lb />
Down My Master's House: My Life at the New<lb />
York Times and goes on a college speaking<lb />
tour.<lb />
Now you may be asking yourself, as did we,<lb />
"what college in their right mind would book<lb />
such a disreputable individual to speak to the<lb />
minds of the future?" Funny you should ask,<lb />
because Wednesday, Blair will speak to stu-<lb />
dents at Winston-Salem State University.<lb />
Brian Blount, chairman of WSSU's mass com-<lb />
munication department defended his decision<lb />
to the Associated Press, stating that Blair will<lb />
offer students the chance to learn important<lb />
lessons.<lb />
"As a reporter, if you have preconceived ideas<lb />
or concepts or you believe something may<lb />
have occurred, you still have to go in there with<lb />
an open mind and become a critical thinker"<lb />
Blount told the AR<lb />
As a staff of aspiring professional journalists,<lb />
we find it hard to believe that Blair could offer<lb />
students any valuable lessons other than how<lb />
to fabricate a news story. We hope that WSSU<lb />
students remember the consequences of<lb />
Blair's mistruths and in no way treat him as a<lb />
credible media professional.<lb />
If liars and cheats are now considered viable<lb />
role models to speak at college campuses, we<lb />
can't help but wonder who'll be next? Will busi-<lb />
ness schools invite former Enron executives to<lb />
discuss business ethics?<lb />

I have no medical degree, and I've<lb />

Most people simply refer to this as<lb />
the tendency to be late. You know those<lb />

This disease, of sorts, seems to show<lb />

us. Take, for example, my experience<lb />
with bouts of it last week. No matter<lb />
how early or late in the day my classes<lb />
were, I could not seem to make it to the<lb />
bus on time for them. I didn't miss the<lb />
bus every time, but considering that it<lb />
was a short week, I missed it most of<lb />
the time.<lb />
It was a good time to have friends<lb />
who understood my chronologi-<lb />
cal challenge. Despite my lateness,<lb />
they were able to get me to class on<lb />
time.<lb />
That is also because although I was<lb />
late, I wasn't extremely late. In fact,<lb />
that probably made it all the more<lb />
painful. I would walk outside and head<lb />
toward the bus stop, notice the bus was<lb />
already loading, and find myself in a<lb />
dilemma.<lb />
Should I power walk and probably<lb />
still not make it? Should I run to try to<lb />
catch the bus, and most likely then, not<lb />
even make it? Or should I just give up,<lb />
turn around and find another way to<lb />
get to campus?<lb />
I tried all options, but they always<lb />
ended in the same result. I hurried to<lb />
the bus, only to watch the doors close<lb />
and it pull away, with me standing<lb />
somewhere outside.<lb />
Even if you aren't one of those<lb />
chronologically challenged people,<lb />
you probably still know how I felt. How<lb />
many times in life do we see something<lb />
we want, even something we need, and<lb />
yet, it is )ust out of our reach? We can<lb />
try harder, we can give it our all, or we<lb />
can give up.<lb />
What makes it even harder is<lb />
knowing that whichever we choose<lb />
might not even make a difference.<lb />
That goal, that dream, that hope just<lb />
slips away, and we watch it disappear<lb />
out of sight as we are running to it.<lb />
We know we should be on that bus,<lb />
but it doesn't matter. We can't catch<lb />
it.<lb />
It all sounds rather depressing<lb />
and hopeless, but I don't think it is<lb />
time yet to be discouraged. I may be<lb />
chronologically challenged, but I also<lb />
have an idealistic side that may be just<lb />
as dangerous.<lb />
When it looks bleak and whatever<lb />
you're hoping for or working toward Is<lb />
just beyond your grasp, don't just give<lb />
up and turn around. Power walk, or<lb />
better yet, run. The bus is waiting, and<lb />
you're supposed to be on it.<lb />
And even if you miss it today, don't<lb />
worry. It'll be back tomorrow.<lb />

GARY MCCABE<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
There's an old adage that we<lb />
teach to children: "Never judge a<lb />
book by its cover That may be a<lb />
little easier said than done, when<lb />
it comes to Paramount's visually<lb />
stunning Sky Captain and the<lb />
World of Tomorrow, which will be<lb />
released Friday, Sept. 17.<lb />
With one glance at Sky Cap-<lb />
tain's trailer, it's apparent that<lb />
first-time writer and director<lb />
Kerry C6nran has created a visual<lb />
masterpiece. The creation process<lb />
began 10 years ago when Conran<lb />
created a CGI program which<lb />
gives him the ability to shoot a<lb />
film in front of a "blue screen"<lb />
and digitally insert the rest of the<lb />
film around the actors.<lb />
Conran and his brother used<lb />
this machine for four years to<lb />
create a short six-minute presen-<lb />
tation, which played on their<lb />
home computer. This presenta-<lb />
tion made the rounds in Hol-<lb />
lywood and eventually fell Into<lb />
the lap of producer Jon Avnet<lb />
Risky Business and Fried Green<lb />
Tomatoes.) Since then he has done<lb />
everything in his power to bring<lb />
Conran's vision to life. As previ-<lb />
ously mentioned, every aspect of<lb />
the film, aside from the actors,<lb />
come directly from the mind of<lb />
Kerry Conran and his crew. With<lb />
this power, Conran has been able<lb />
to create a beautiful, engaging<lb />
fantasy world, unparalleled by<lb />
any other film in history.<lb />
Speaking of actors, Conran<lb />
assembled a remarkable cast for<lb />
such a unique project with an<lb />
untested director. Sky Captain<lb />
stars Academy Award winners<lb />
Gwyneth Paltrow Shakespeare<lb />
in Love) and Angelina Jolie (Giri,<lb />

Academy Award nominee Jude<lb />

Local band celebrates release of their newest CD<lb />
Dystonic plays gig<lb />

REID DORSETT<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Local band, Dystonic, is the<lb />
new up and coming band in<lb />
Greenville. Their unique style<lb />
blends jazz and rock to create an<lb />
explosion of character and talent<lb />
for their recorded and live music.<lb />
Dystonic is made up of David<lb />
Dixon, Adam Whitley-Sebtl, Will<lb />
Kitchen and John Ray. Dixon,<lb />
Whitley-Sebti and Kitchen are from<lb />
Greenville, while Ray came to the<lb />
area to play with the group. During<lb />
the first practice session, the four<lb />
seemed to mesh perfectly to create<lb />
the sound they were looking for.<lb />
"I just knew from the first<lb />
time we played together that this<lb />
band would do well together<lb />
said Whitley-Sebti.<lb />
"The good thing is that all these<lb />
guys are dedicated to the band as<lb />
a full-time position, it's not just<lb />
a weekend thing said Dixon.<lb />
This is important because they<lb />
want fans to know that they are not<lb />
just another band, but one that is<lb />
dedicated to the fans and each other.<lb />
"We want fans to get a taste of<lb />
our personalities and how we feel<lb />
about the music Dixon said.<lb />
To do this they have made<lb />
their first self-titled CD enhanced<lb />
so that listeners may also see<lb />
behind the scenes footage of the<lb />
band recording. It can be found<lb />
by playing the CD on almost any<lb />
Mac or PC. The footage is full of<lb />
character which was seen in the<lb />
friendly banter of members Adam<lb />
Whitley-Sebti and David Dixon<lb />
during an interview this past Sat-<lb />
urday and on the entire group on<lb />
the enhanced CD. Unfortunately,<lb />
members John Ray and Will<lb />
Kitchen could not be present.<lb />
The band Dystonic, pictured above,<lb />
The CD is carefully crafted<lb />
to please listeners of many styles<lb />
of music. It is produced by David<lb />
Wolfe, a former roommate of<lb />
Dixon while studying at Berkelee<lb />
College of Music in Boston. Wolfe<lb />
was excited to be involved in the<lb />
project, recording in Virginia<lb />
with additional tracks at Music<lb />
will be having a CD release at Peasants Saturday night.<lb />
Box Studio in Hamilton, NC. The<lb />
band has the same excitement<lb />
towards Wolfe feeling that he has<lb />
a huge talent in producing that<lb />
exceeds many others.<lb />
"We feel our music has come<lb />
a long way while working with a<lb />
producer like Wolfe said Whit-<lb />
ley-Sebti, "both in the studio and<lb />
on stage our music is at a new<lb />
level from working with him<lb />

Tuesday night starts look-<lb />

is allowed to have their own<lb />

the show has been slowly hint-<lb />

WB's still young "One Tree Hill<lb />
which has been deemed the<lb />
"Dawson's Creek shadow" show,<lb />
plans on taking a more comedic<lb />
approach to life's problems that<lb />
the two rival brothers and their<lb />
families encounter.<lb />
"One Tree Hill" may need<lb />
more then a few laughs however,<lb />
to keep their ratings up against<lb />
Fox's similar prime time show<lb />
"The O.C "The O.C plans<lb />
on having plenty of "hot love"<lb />
and drama-filled romance this<lb />
season. Characters Marissa, Seth,<lb />
Ryan and Summer are all being<lb />
confronted with new love inter-<lb />
ests, something that will bring<lb />
more heat and more twists to the<lb />
already-promising plot.<lb />
Since the core of most TV<lb />
shows is in fact the topic of<lb />
love, it is no surprise that ABC<lb />
is coming out with a new reality<lb />
show called "Wife Swap which<lb />
begins at 10 p.m. Wednesday<lb />
night. "Wife Swap where obvi-<lb />
ously, two wives switch families,<lb />
sounds just like Fox's "Trading<lb />
Spouses" reality show where two<lb />
spouses trade families as well.<lb />
Where is the originality?<lb />
The creativity? Viewers may be<lb />
asking these and countless other<lb />
questions when viewing the TV<lb />
lineup for this fall.<lb />
For instance, "Joey<lb />
His "Friends" have all grown<lb />
up and moved on. So the ques-<lb />
tion (maybe worth asking) is<lb />
what happened to Joey Tribbiani?<lb />
"Friends" TV producers decided<lb />
this question needed to be<lb />
answered by giving Matt Leblanc<lb />
who plays Joey, his own show.<lb />
Joey is hitting it big time by<lb />
moving out to L.A. in search of a<lb />
serious acting career, living with<lb />
his sister's rock-scientist kid, and<lb />
acting like a goof-ball all the while.<lb />
Hopefully, "Joey" will sur-<lb />
vive on its "Friends" foundation<lb />
against the tough "O.C and<lb />
"Survivor which viewers can<lb />
tune in to at 8 p.m. on Thursday<lb />
as well. It's just a good thing "Life<lb />
as We Know It a new series star-<lb />
ing lots of random boys and Kelly<lb />
Osbourne isn't trying to com-<lb />
pete during that time slot too.<lb />
"Life As We Know It" is currently<lb />
described as a show about guys'<lb />
thoughts and feelings, most of which<lb />
revolve around sex and more sex.<lb />
So, if viewers are sick of love,<lb />
sex and drama by Friday, they<lb />
can tune into WB for "Com-<lb />
mando Nanny The new series<lb />
is based upon the day-to-day<lb />
struggles a former British Spe-<lb />
cial Forces soldier has when he<lb />
becomes the nanny for three<lb />
Beverly Hill kids.<lb />
This lighter-themed show<lb />
runs similarly against the comedy,<lb />
"Two and a Half Men" which<lb />
stars Charlie Sheen. Sheen's<lb />
character struggles to live in an<lb />
adult world while still maintain-<lb />
ing a tasteful environment for<lb />
his brother and his brother's son<lb />
who live with him.<lb />
Since the comedies, the<lb />
dramas and the reality TV shows<lb />
do not really appear on Satur-<lb />
day's schedule, Sunday becomes<lb />
another big prime-time for TV.<lb />
Familiar shows like Steve Har-<lb />
vey's "Big Time "Cold Case<lb />
"Alias" and "Crossing Jordan"<lb />
continue to survive through the<lb />
TV ratings, but leave channels<lb />
with enough room for new shows<lb />
like "Jack & Bobby<lb />
"Jack & Bobby" is a new WB<lb />
series, which follows the lives<lb />
of two brothers, one of which<lb />
will futuristically become the<lb />
president, and how they survive<lb />
with their self-absorbed, dys-<lb />
functional mother.<lb />
The show has been reviewed<lb />
as a promising, fresh new drama,<lb />
but it is up to the viewers to<lb />
decide the fate of "Jack & Bobby<lb />
and countless other shows that<lb />
appear on the fall TV roster.<lb />
There may be a lack of cre-<lb />
ativity (as many of the shows<lb />
seem synonymous with each<lb />
other), however each new show<lb />
brings fresh faces and issues<lb />
into the TV viewer's home. The<lb />
returning shows this fall have<lb />
also integrated new talent into<lb />
their plots, making it easier for<lb />
TV viewers to find something<lb />
they all can enjoy.<lb />
Reality is still reality, and<lb />
drama is still drama, but TV as a<lb />
whole will never stop changing.<lb />
If no one ever changed it, no one<lb />
would ever watch it.<lb />

though, with great star power<lb />
and great effects, but somehow<lb />
failed to resonate with audiences.<lb />
Films, such as Daredevil and The<lb />
Hulk placed so much emphasis<lb />
on these aspects that they forgot<lb />
what ultimately makes a film<lb />
enjoyable: the story. The films<lb />
are all flash and no substance.<lb />
So will this be the case with Sky<lb />
Captain and the World of Tomor-<lb />
row? The film's script has been<lb />
in development for more than<lb />
10 years, giving first-time screen-<lb />
writer Conran plenty of time to<lb />
perfect and hone every detail of<lb />
the story.<lb />
Sky Captain takes place in<lb />
fictional Gotham City, which<lb />
is modeled after New York City,<lb />
during the late 1930s. All of<lb />
Earth's scientists are mysteri-<lb />
ously vanishing. The Gotham<lb />
City Chronicle's ace reporter,<lb />
Polly Perkins, played by Paltrow,<lb />
is on the case. Dauntless, Perkins<lb />
does anything she can to get the<lb />
story, often times putting herself<lb />
in the line of danger. However,<lb />
the prospect of working alone<lb />
goes out the window when giant<lb />
flying robots arrive on the scene,<lb />
destroying everything in sight.<lb />
She calls in celebrated hero (and<lb />
former flame,) Sky Captain,<lb />
Joseph Sullivan, played by Law.<lb />
Joseph Sullivan is a pilot,<lb />
whose adeptness at flying and<lb />
superior marksmanship is tran-<lb />
scended only by his coura-<lb />
geousness and heart. Sullivan,<lb />
along with Perkins, whips around<lb />
the skies of Gotham City in<lb />
his Warhawk P-40, attempting<lb />
to fight off the numerous robots.<lb />
At the same time, they must dis-<lb />
cover why the robotic creatures<lb />
have come and what has become<lb />
of all of the scientists.<lb />
When things get too much<lb />
for Sky Captain to handle alone,<lb />
he looks for support. Help<lb />
comes to him in many forms<lb />
including the Flying Legion,<lb />
which is at his command.<lb />
Giovanni Ribisi (Saving Pri-<lb />
vate Ryan) plays Dex, Sullivan's<lb />
right hand man and technical<lb />
master who is just as handy<lb />
with a metal-melting ray as he<lb />
is navigating through a dogfight.<lb />
Angelina Jolie plays an inter-<lb />
esting role as Captain Franky<lb />
Cook, another ex-flame of Sul-<lb />
livan's who came between him<lb />
and Perkins. She also commands<lb />
an explosive all-female amphibi-<lb />
ous squadron, which backs the<lb />
protagonists any way it can.<lb />
Now Sky Captain and Perkins<lb />
must travel to many fantastic<lb />
lands to try and stop the evil Dr.<lb />
Totenkopf who's hell-bent on<lb />
destroying the Earth.<lb />
Sky Captain and the World of<lb />
Tomorrow is in many ways a clas-<lb />
sic adventure title. It has a very<lb />
straightforward story and distinct<lb />
protagonists and antagonists.<lb />
However, director Kerry Conran<lb />
and the producers of this film have<lb />
gone to great lengths to set it apart<lb />
from other movies in the genre.<lb />
David Foucher of Edgeboston.com<lb />
gave the film an A and called it<lb />
the breakout cinematic - and<lb />
the best film thus far - of 2004<lb />
Moriarty of Aintitcool.com<lb />
gave the film a similar rave review<lb />
of the film, particularly highlight-<lb />
ing the amazing musical score writ-<lb />
ten by Ed Shearmur, which helps<lb />
set the tone of what he calls, <lb />
the most beautifully realized fan-<lb />
tasy worlds have ever seen on film<lb />
Though reviews are sparse and<lb />
hard to find, the few reviews that<lb />
have been written have been very<lb />
positive. Jeffrey Bruner of the Des<lb />
Moines Register said it's unlike<lb />
any film you've seen this year. It<lb />
has got dazzling visuals, amazing<lb />
special effects and a fun story<lb />

Star Wars comparisons has been<lb />
a running theme in the early<lb />
reviews, which should make<lb />
Conran very proud of his debut<lb />
film, even if it has taken him this<lb />
long to finish it.<lb />
So to answer the opening<lb />
question, should Sky Captain<lb />
be judged by its cover? Though<lb />
the beautiful visuals of the<lb />
film set a lofty bar, it seems<lb />
as if Conran and his amazing<lb />
cast are up to the task and have<lb />
seemingly created a masterpiece.<lb />
Ina summer bursting with sequels<lb />

a cast and crew feels so strongly<lb />
about a film and pour their hearts<lb />

Pitcher charged<lb />
with battery<lb />
Texas Rangers reliever Frank<lb />
Francisco was arrested<lb />
Tuesday morning on a charge<lb />
of aggravated battery after he<lb />
threw a chair into the right-field<lb />
box seats and hit two spectators<lb />
in the head during Monday night's<lb />
loss to the Oakland Athletics.<lb />
One of the fans, an unidentified<lb />
woman, was bloodied and her<lb />
nose was broken. Major League<lb />
Baseball's commissioner's office<lb />
said Tuesday morning that it<lb />
was investigating. Francisco was<lb />
cooperative after he was taken<lb />
into custody, Oakland Police<lb />
Department deputy chief Peter<lb />
Ounbar said. With two outs in<lb />
the ninth inning, the Rangers'<lb />
Alfonso Soriano tied the game<lb />
5-5 with his second homer of the<lb />
night. Moments later, with Hank<lb />
Blalock at the plate, the Texas<lb />
bench and bullpen cleared. Texas<lb />
reliever Doug Brocail was seen<lb />
screaming at a male fan, and the<lb />
pitcher had to be restrained by<lb />
his teammates and bullpen coach<lb />
Mark Connor. Others also had to<lb />
be held back. Francisco threw the<lb />
chair at a fan in a lower box near<lb />
the Rangers' bullpen along the<lb />
right-field line. The chair hit one<lb />
man in the head, then bounced<lb />
and struck the woman on her<lb />
left temple.<lb />
Hurricane<lb />
postpones game<lb />
The uncertainty of Hurricane<lb />
Ivan forced postponement of<lb />
Thursday night's game between<lb />
No. 10 California and Southern<lb />
Mississippi. The hard-to-predict<lb />
Category 5 storm, one of the<lb />
most powerful hurricanes ever<lb />
to hit the Caribbean, killed at<lb />
least 68 people in a devastating<lb />
run through Barbados, Grenada,<lb />
Jamaica and the Cayman Islands.<lb />
The storm began hitting Cuba on<lb />
Monday. Cal athletic director Steve<lb />
Gladstone issued a statement<lb />
earlier Monday saying the<lb />
game had been postponed and<lb />
would probably be rescheduled<lb />
in December. Southern Miss<lb />
officials said the makeup date<lb />
will be announced by Wednesday.<lb />
Possibilities include Saturday<lb />
or Dec. 4, the only remaining<lb />
weekend neither team has a game<lb />
scheduled, Southern Miss senior<lb />
associate athletic director David<lb />
Hansen said. Rescheduling the<lb />
game, the Golden Eagles' home<lb />
opener, for this Saturday means<lb />
Southern Miss would miss out<lb />
on $140,000 in television revenue.<lb />
ESPN, which was scheduled to<lb />
broadcast the game Thursday<lb />
night, said it could not televise a<lb />
makeup game Saturday because<lb />
its lineup that day is full, Hansen<lb />
said.<lb />
Vlck pleads no contest<lb />
Suspended Virginia Tech<lb />
quarterback Marcus Vick<lb />
pleaded no contest Monday<lb />
to a misdemeanor charge of<lb />
contributing to the delinquency<lb />
of a minor after a night of<lb />
drinking with underage girls.<lb />
Vlck, younger brother of Atlanta<lb />
Falcons quarterback Michael<lb />
Vick, received a suspended 30-<lb />
day jail sentence, was fined $100<lb />
and ordered to perform 24 hours<lb />
of community service. The judge<lb />
ordered Vlck to stay away from the<lb />
teenage girls. Vick was arrested<lb />
in February with teammates Mike<lb />
Imoh and Brenden Hill after an<lb />
encounter with 14 and 15 year-<lb />
old girls at the quarterback's<lb />
apartment in Blacksburg. Tech<lb />
suspended Vick this season<lb />
and said he could possibly be<lb />
readmitted in the spring after<lb />
completing a drug education<lb />
and counseling program.<lb />
Any more criminal, athletic or<lb />
university violations would result<lb />
in permanent dismissal. Long<lb />
said Vick has told him he plans<lb />
to re-enroll at Tech this spring.<lb />
Tech spokesman Larry Hincker<lb />
said Monday that Vick's status at<lb />
the school remains unchanged.<lb />
Last month, Vick pleaded guilty<lb />
to reckless driving and no contest<lb />
to marijuana possession related<lb />
to a traffic stop this summer. As<lb />
part of a plea agreement Vick was<lb />
placed in a drug offender program<lb />
requiring 24 hours of community<lb />
service, drug counseling and<lb />
random drug tests.<lb />

Gillette holds indoor,<lb />

ERIC GILMORE<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Chances are you've seen<lb />
Elexis Gillette around campus.<lb />
Chances are he hasn't seen you.<lb />
It's because Gillette is blind. But<lb />
behind Gillette's sunglasses is a<lb />
deeper story, one he can't tell you<lb />
with his eyes.<lb />
Gillette is an Olympian.<lb />
Being an Olympian is typical<lb />
for this ECU student turning 20<lb />
this October. In fact, Gillette is<lb />
the American favorite to win the<lb />
gold medal.<lb />
Gillette will spend Sept. 17<lb />
- 28 competing in the Paralym-<lb />
pic Games in Athens, Greece.<lb />
Gillette will participate in the<lb />
long-jump and the 4x100 relay.<lb />
The 2003 graduate of Athens Drive<lb />
High in Cary, NC, is the country's<lb />
top-ranked jumper in the B-l class.<lb />
The B-l division is exclusively<lb />
for completely blind athletes.<lb />
"It's the same thing and in<lb />
the same place that the Olympics<lb />
are in, but this is just with ath-<lb />
letes with physical disabilities<lb />
said Gillette.<lb />
Gillette was fifth in the IBSA<lb />
(International Blind Sports Fed-<lb />
eration) World Championships<lb />
in August 2003 in Quebec with<lb />
a jump of 19 feet, 8 inches (5.99<lb />
meters). Gillette's 4x100 relay<lb />
team finished fourth.<lb />
"Quebec was my first inter-<lb />
national competition. I jumped<lb />
behind the board so they had to<lb />
measure in front of the board<lb />
Gillette said.<lb />
Even so, the jump was an<lb />
example of why Gillette has<lb />
leaped farther than any com-<lb />
pletely blind American ever in<lb />
both indoor and outdoor track.<lb />
The News and Observer 2003<lb />
Male Athlete of the Year is ready<lb />
for Athens. Six weeks ago, the<lb />
Eagle Scout competed in the Para-<lb />
lympic trials in Sacramento, Calif.<lb />
Two weeks later, Gillette spent<lb />
Aug. 7 - 18 training with the rest<lb />
of the team at the Olympic Train-<lb />
ing Center in San Diego, Calif.<lb />
"I practiced long jump and<lb />
practiced with my relay team<lb />
Gillette said<lb />
"On a regular day, after we warm<lb />
up, we do starts for the relay. For<lb />
long jump, I did all these jumping<lb />
drills and arrangement of jumps.<lb />
I also did runway approaches<lb />
Blind long jumpers have call-<lb />

However, some of it is memory.<lb />
"I take 16 steps and start with<lb />
my right so I do eight on each<lb />
Gillette said.<lb />
"When I get to my 16th step,<lb />
I know when to take off<lb />
In the 4x100 relay, Gillette is<lb />
accompanied by a guide runner<lb />
who will probably carry the<lb />
baton and run beside him.<lb />
"When we run to the second<lb />
leg, we will yell 'go Gillette<lb />
said.<lb />
"That is his cue to go.<lb />
After that, we will yell stick,<lb />
so he knows to stick his hand<lb />
back<lb />
Gillette is no stranger to<lb />
competition. He recalls playing<lb />
recreation basketball and baseball<lb />
before losing his eyesight to glau-<lb />
coma in fourth grade. Glaucoma<lb />
is a genetic disease that infects<lb />
66.8 million people worldwide.<lb />
Only 6.7 million suffer from<lb />
complete blindness.<lb />
The blindness never stopped<lb />
Gillette. He wrestled his first two<lb />
years of high school. After Brian<lb />
Whitmer, a teacher at Athens<lb />
Drive, got Gillette into track and<lb />
field, he was hooked.<lb />
"My coach Whitmer trained<lb />
me a lot Gillette said.<lb />
"He was always with me. He<lb />
would motivate me and help me<lb />
out. It gave me more confidence<lb />
to try to do good. He told me<lb />
about all these events that I could<lb />
get to like the Paralympics<lb />
Whitmer volunteered at the<lb />
Michigan Blind Athletic Asso-<lb />

and two years was the site coor-<lb />

Sports Education Camp for the<lb />
Visually Impaired. It was Whit-<lb />
mer who has helped Gillette raise<lb />
money to be able to support the<lb />
training costs.<lb />
Also in high school, Gillette<lb />
earned a 3.2 GPA and received a<lb />
scholarship from the NC Council<lb />
of the Blind. More importantly<lb />
for Gillette, he was named co-<lb />
captain of his track team.<lb />
Gillette excels in class, on the field and copes with his disability with incredible optimism.<lb />
"It was really nice and a great<lb />
experience for me Gillette said.<lb />
"It just told me that my team-<lb />

captains. I felt like I could help<lb />

Rugby spawned from soccer,<lb />
and football was born from<lb />
rugby, thus, it makes sense that<lb />
today some of the terminology in<lb />
each game is the same. A person<lb />
just has to look to find the many<lb />
similarities.<lb />
From the 1100s to the 1400s,<lb />
through three kings (Edward II,<lb />
Edward the II, James 1) the sport<lb />
of rugby was outlawed. However,<lb />
during those years, players con-<lb />

The ECU Volleyball team<lb />
entered their long away schedule<lb />
last Friday when they traveled<lb />
to Rock Hill, SC to participate<lb />
in the Winthrop Tournament.<lb />
The Lady Pirates had just come<lb />
off a three-game sweep of North<lb />
Carolina A&T and were looking<lb />
to prove themselves on the road.<lb />
With wins in the tournament,<lb />
ECU would continue to build<lb />
momentum in pre-conference<lb />
play.<lb />
ECU opened play against<lb />
Winthrop with another sweep<lb />
in mind. Unfortunately for the<lb />
Lady Pirates, a sweep did occur<lb />
except by the hands of the Lady<lb />
Eagles. The scores finished at<lb />
30-23, 30-21 and 30-13 as Win-<lb />
throp won their first game of the<lb />
tournament. Winthrop junior<lb />
Mary Hock led the match with<lb />
19 kills in the victory.<lb />
ECU was looking to rebound<lb />
from their previous loss when<lb />
they faced UNC Greensboro the<lb />
following Saturday. ECU junior<lb />
libero Johanna Bertini was able<lb />
to pull out a career-high per-<lb />
formance of 22 digs as the Lady<lb />
Pirates came up with their own<lb />
sweep against the Lady Spartans.<lb />
ECU freshman Kelley Wernert<lb />
also put forth a career-high<lb />
record with 10 kills in the sweep.<lb />
The game scores were 30-19, 30-<lb />
24, 30-13.<lb />
The Lady Pirates weren't able<lb />
to savor their victory for long as<lb />
they fell to Belmont that evening<lb />
in three straight games, 30-22<lb />
30-28, 30-23. The Lady Bruins<lb />
out hit ECU .281 to 057 in both<lb />
team's final game of the tourna-<lb />
ment. The loss set ECU's record<lb />
at 6-4 so far this season.<lb />
Bertini was the only ECU<lb />
player selected to the all-tourna-<lb />

throughout the tournament<lb />
averaging 14 per game.<lb />
This week ECU continues their<lb />

The Lady Pirates will then' take<lb />

about majors to students who are considering a career<lb />
in health and to students who are considering health<lb />
fields that require graduate or professional school work.<lb />
Also, To provide students an opportunity to meet with<lb />

Sponsored by the Academic Enrichment Center, Brewster B-103, (<lb />

Gillette says that on very<lb />
sunny days he can see shadows<lb />
and outlines.<lb />
"On a sunny day if a car was<lb />
in front of me, I would be able to<lb />
avoid it but if it was overcast, I'd<lb />
probably hit it Gillette said.<lb />
Gillette has goals of running<lb />
sub-12 seconds in his leg of the<lb />
4x100 relayandlong-jumping more<lb />
than six meters. Even so, he has<lb />
already exceeded expectations.<lb />
"I'm excited that I get to go<lb />
to Athens) Gillette said.<lb />
"I want to do real well. It<lb />
means a lot to be able to run in<lb />
the same venues that the Olym-<lb />
pians ran in<lb />
Next time you see Elexis Gil-<lb />

have to look twice. That gold<lb />

favorable position than that where the ball was grounded.<lb />
o<lb />
The Basics of Rugby<lb />
Beyond or behind or In Front of any position implies "with<lb />
both feet except when unsulted to the context.<lb />
Dead means that the ball is for the time being out of play. This<lb />
occurs when the referee blows his whistle to indicate a stoppage<lb />
of play or when an attempt to convert a try Is unsuccessful.<lb />
Drop Kick. A drop kick Is made by letting the ball fall from<lb />
the hand (or hands) to the ground and kicking It at the first<lb />
rebound as it rises.<lb />
Mark. The mark Is the place at which a free kick or penalty<lb />
kick Is awarded.<lb />
Line Through the Mark (or place). Except where specifically<lb />
stated otherwise, the words "a line through the mark" or "a line<lb />
through the place" always means a line parallel to the touchllne.<lb />
The Llneout<lb />
A llneout Is formed by at least two players from each<lb />
team lining up in single lines parallel to the line-of-touch<lb />
way of evidence to substantiate<lb />
this view, it is the popular view.<lb />
The game was picked up by<lb />
Cambridge University where it<lb />
grew popular at area schools and<lb />
in 1871. In 1895, the first rugby<lb />
union with rules and a league'<lb />
was formed in England. Rugby<lb />
Union club level was a domi-<lb />
nant sport in England, Scotland,<lb />
Wales and Ireland. The game<lb />
was also strong in France, Italy,<lb />
Argentina, Fiji, Western Samoa,<lb />
Canada, Japan and Honk Kong<lb />
as well as New Zealand, Austra-<lb />
lia and South Africa. Although<lb />
a handful of clubs remained in<lb />
the United States, rugby did not<lb />
reemerge until the 1960s. College<lb />
campuses turned to the sport<lb />
because it was one where many<lb />
could play as a type of backlash<lb />
to football.<lb />
