However, this year, there will not he a formal speaker. Austin Bunch, assistant to the chancellor lor University Relations, said instead of providing such a lecture at this year's ceremony, Interim Chancellor William Shelton will say a tew words at the morning and afternoon ceremonies. Shelton came to ECU in July of 2000 to serve as vice chancellor for University Advancement where he was responsible for ECU'S fundralslng, alumni affairs, communication, marketing and athletics. Prior to his position at ECU, Shelton served as presi- dent of Eastern Michigan University, vice president lor Institutional Advancement at Kent State University in Ohio and vice president for University Services at Henderson State University in Arkansas. Shelton, a Tennessee native, holds bachelors and masters degrees in history from the University of Mem- phis and a doctorate in higher education administra- tion from the University of Mississippi. Elizabeth Ellerbe, assistant director of alumni relations, said any student that graduates from ECU or has attended two consecutive semesters in pursuit of a degree will automatically be reg- istered as an alumnus or alumna and can enjoy benefits such as class reunions, award dinners and networking. In an article on Monster.com, John Kossch- eim, Monster senior contributing writer, said college and recent graduate students have "a very- good shot at a steady job for life" in account- ing. Monster ranks accounting number 12 out of 44 among recent graduates seeking jobs. The education field will be the most popular in the near future. Many new teachers seek suburban areas instead ol the urban neighborhoods. Rural districts are in need of many teachers, including special education. The healthcare field is growing, too. In 2000, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics con- cluded there were 2.2 million nurses in the United States, and the nation will need an additional half a million or more by 2010. The end of the year means it's time to say goodbye to the comly confines that make up campus and head off to the real world. The athletic department will say goodbye to SO students athletes this year. lor athletic teams, graduation means the annual reshuffling erf costers. The great thing about college sports that separates it from the pros is even though teams change from year to year, the spirit stays the same. College sports is said not to be about the name on the back of the jersey as much as it is the name on the front, lie loss of a star may be the end of an era, but it is also the chance for another to rise. The diverse population will leave with knowledge gained from both work in the classroom and dedication in the competi- tive arena. For some, an athletic career paved the way for academic life with a full scholarship. Others competed with less funding, but not with less vigor. There will be some notable exits from both ECU basketball teams this spring. Courtney Willis, who played a big role tor the l.ady Pirate basketball team, will graduate leaving behind a legacy that includes averaging 19.1 points a game and 10.3 rebounds a game this season. She is ranked fifth all-time on ECU's scoring list with 1,371 points. Willis, who may be the 18th l.ady Pirate on record to reach 1,000 points in her career, closed this season out by being named first-team All Conference USA, which makes her the first l.ady Pirate in ECU's history to do so. The men's basketball team will take the court next season without three familiar faces. Erroyl Bing, Gabriel Mikulas and Derrick Wiley (the team MVP) finished their eligibility and will leave the team to a young nucleus which includes two rising freshmen stars: Japhet McNeil, who led ECU in assists (97) and steals (36), and Mike Cook, who was named to the C-USA All-Freshmen team. Jamie Paige will be parting from the Pirate baseball team at the end of this year, leaving behind a team he has helped climb to a No. 9 ranking in the national polls thus far this season. Paige is hitting .306 with one homerun and 22 RBI and recently set school and confer- ence records in both hits and doubles In a single game.
