Shelton to speak at graduation<lb/>
SHELTON<lb/>
No formal guest speaker<lb/>
set for ceremonies<lb/>
AMANDA LINGERFELT<lb/>
FEATURES EDITOR<lb/>
In previous graduation ceremonies, world-<lb/>
renowned lecturers and authors have come to speak<lb/>
to ECU'S graduates. However, this year, there will not<lb/>
he a formal speaker.<lb/>
Austin Bunch, assistant to the chancellor lor<lb/>
University Relations, said instead of providing such<lb/>
a lecture at this year's ceremony, Interim Chancellor<lb/>
William Shelton will say a tew words at the morning<lb/>
and afternoon ceremonies.<lb/>
Shelton came to ECU in July of 2000 to serve as<lb/>
vice chancellor for University Advancement where he<lb/>
was responsible for ECU'S fundralslng, alumni affairs,<lb/>
communication, marketing and athletics.<lb/>
Prior to his position at ECU, Shelton served as presi-<lb/>
dent of Eastern Michigan University, vice president lor<lb/>
Institutional Advancement at Kent State University<lb/>
in Ohio and vice president for University Services at<lb/>
Henderson State University in Arkansas.<lb/>
Shelton, a Tennessee native, holds bachelors and<lb/>
masters degrees in history from the University of Mem-<lb/>
phis and a doctorate in higher education administra-<lb/>
tion from the University of Mississippi.<lb/>
A former sportscaster and motivational<lb/>
speaker, Shelton has been active in many professional<lb/>
and civic activities, lie has served on the N( <lb/>
Presidents' Commission and the National Kducation<lb/>

How to become an active alumni<lb/>
Membership benefits help<lb/>
graduates stay connected<lb/>
JASMINE D. HARRELL<lb/>
STAFF WRITER<lb/>
Students preparing for Mas graduation can<lb/>
stay in touch with classmates by becoming active<lb/>
alumni.<lb/>
I he Alumni C enter, currently under renova-<lb/>
tion at the Taylor-Slaughter house, is responsible<lb/>
lor 1(1 alumni altairs across the nation.<lb/>
Elizabeth Ellerbe, assistant director of alumni<lb/>
relations, said any student that graduates from<lb/>
ECU or has attended two consecutive semesters<lb/>
in pursuit of a degree will automatically be reg-<lb/>
istered as an alumnus or alumna and can enjoy<lb/>
benefits such as class reunions, award dinners<lb/>
and networking.<lb/>
To lc considered active, members must partici-<lb/>
pate In local alumni events<lb/>
"The Alumni Otlice oilers some great benefits<lb/>
for alumni said Ellerbe.<lb/>
"Some of these benefits include reduced auto<lb/>
insurance through liberty Mutual and Collegiate<lb/>
funding Service, a way to pay back student loans<lb/>
at a lower interest rate<lb/>
Alumni have access to 8T1 online directory<lb/>
that allows members to post class updates, such<lb/>
as weddings or births.<lb/>
Once students graduate, their OneStop accounts<lb/>
will automatically expire, but when graduates regis-<lb/>
ter online, they will have their own alumni e-mail<lb/>
account<lb/>
Ellerbe said there are 106,000active ECU alumni,<lb/>
and Pitt County alone has 10,000 members.<lb/>
"We want as many graduates to be active<lb/>
because we're always trying to expand our circle of<lb/>
friends Ellerbe said.<lb/>
Graduates can stay active no matter where they<lb/>
are located because of the widespread alumni chap-<lb/>
ters across the United States. If there is not a chapter<lb/>
located near an alumni member, one can be started<lb/>
With help trom the ECU Alumni Office.<lb/>
Ellerbe said the Alumni Association is always<lb/>
looking for volunteers as a way to expand ECU'S<lb/>
alumni and activities. Volunteers are needed to call<lb/>
classmates, I ind locations for events, nominate class-<lb/>
mates and be part ol the reunion committee, which<lb/>
helps plan class reunions held during homecoming.<lb/>
"A lot of alumni are interested in career alumni<lb/>
events, so we're trying to target events that make<lb/>
people want to come and that people will be inter-<lb/>
ested in I llerbe said.<lb/>
They arealso planning freshman send-offs, which<lb/>
is an invitation sent to all incoming freshmen for a<lb/>
planned event in which students, family and alumni<lb/>
can enjoy activities and door prizes.<lb/>
"We're always trying to reach out to alumni<lb/>

Ellerbe said the alumni association will be changing<lb/>

make chapters more identifiable and will be starting<lb/>
a new Triad chapter including Raleigh, Durham and<lb/>
Chapel Hill in the near future.<lb/>

Iltian Newton, associate director ol Stu-<lb/>

college and recent graduate students have "a very-<lb/>
good shot at a steady job for life" in account-<lb/>

of 44 among recent graduates seeking jobs.<lb/>
The education field will be the most<lb/>
popular in the near future. Many new<lb/>
teachers seek suburban areas instead ol the<lb/>
urban neighborhoods. Rural districts are in<lb/>
need of many teachers, including special<lb/>
education.<lb/>
The healthcare field is growing, too. In<lb/>
2000, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics con-<lb/>
cluded there were 2.2 million nurses in the<lb/>
United States, and the nation will need an<lb/>
additional half a million or more by 2010. The<lb/>
demand for nurses is extremely high, so not<lb/>
many prospective RNs will have a problem<lb/>

SPORTS EDITOR<lb/>
Graduation is finally here and along<lb/>
with it, the spring sports season is coming<lb/>
to a close. The end of the year means it's<lb/>
time to say goodbye to the comly confines<lb/>
that make up campus and head off to the<lb/>
real world. The athletic department will<lb/>
say goodbye to SO students athletes this<lb/>
year.<lb/>
lor athletic teams, graduation means<lb/>
the annual reshuffling erf costers. Coaches<lb/>
B( loss the Country reorganize in the hopes<lb/>
that the ties! sc.ison will hi' as magical as<lb/>
the one before.<lb/>
The great thing about college sports<lb/>
that separates it from the pros is even<lb/>
though teams change from year to year,<lb/>
the spirit stays the same.<lb/>
College sports is said not to be<lb/>
about the name on the back of the jersey<lb/>
as much as it is the name on the front,<lb/>
lie loss of a star may be the end of an<lb/>
era, but it is also the chance for another<lb/>
to rise.<lb/>
The diverse population will leave with<lb/>
knowledge gained from both work in the<lb/>
classroom and dedication in the competi-<lb/>
tive arena. For some, an athletic career<lb/>
paved the way for academic life with a<lb/>
full scholarship. Others competed with<lb/>
less funding, but not with less vigor.<lb/>
There will be some notable exits from<lb/>
both ECU basketball teams this spring.<lb/>
Courtney Willis, who played a big role<lb/>
tor the l.ady Pirate basketball team, will<lb/>
graduate leaving behind a legacy that<lb/>
includes averaging 19.1 points a game and<lb/>
10.3 rebounds a game this season. She is<lb/>
ranked fifth all-time on ECU's scoring list<lb/>
with 1,371 points.<lb/>
Willis, who may be the 18th l.ady<lb/>
Pirate on record to reach 1,000 points in<lb/>
her career, closed this season out by being<lb/>
named first-team All Conference USA,<lb/>
which makes her the first l.ady Pirate in<lb/>
ECU's history to do so.<lb/>
The men's basketball team will take the<lb/>
court next season without three familiar<lb/>
faces. Erroyl Bing, Gabriel Mikulas and<lb/>
Derrick Wiley (the team MVP) finished<lb/>
their eligibility and will leave the team<lb/>
to a young nucleus which includes two<lb/>
rising freshmen stars: Japhet McNeil, who<lb/>
led ECU in assists (97) and steals (36),<lb/>
and Mike Cook, who was named to the<lb/>
C-USA All-Freshmen team.<lb/>
Jamie Paige will be parting from<lb/>
the Pirate baseball team at the end of<lb/>
this year, leaving behind a team he has<lb/>
helped climb to a No. 9 ranking in the<lb/>
national polls thus far this season. Paige<lb/>
is hitting .306 with one homerun and 22<lb/>
RBI and recently set school and confer-<lb/>
ence records in both hits and doubles In<lb/>
a single game.<lb/>
