WEDNESDAY<lb />
Kerry captures Super Tuesday victory<lb />
Wachovia's gift will ease teacher shortage.<lb />
Wachovia donates<lb />
more than $1 million<lb />
to recruit teachers<lb />
Largest monetary gift in ECU<lb />
history will benefit eastern NC<lb />
TABATHA JAMES<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
The demand for new teachers in the next decade<lb />
far exceeds supply, with a projected two million<lb />
jobs to he filled.<lb />
But Wachovia Bank Corporate has generously<lb />
donated $1.25 million to combat the shortage of<lb />
rural teachers.<lb />
This is the largest corporate gift ever donated to<lb />
ECU and will provide scholarships, tuition, fees and<lb />
support to positions for various coordinators.<lb />
The money specifically targets rural areas east<lb />
of I-9S where the I .at hum Clinical Schools Network<lb />
serves Pitt County and 17 surrounding counties.<lb />
Martin Lancaster, North Carolina Community<lb />
College president, and Marilyn Sheerer, college<lb />
of education dean, were both in agreement that<lb />
this is a very powerful vehicle for addressing the<lb />
statewide crisis and are happy to have Wachovia<lb />
as a partner.<lb />
Reasons for the shortage are lack of teacher<lb />
mobility, inadequate induction programs, poor<lb />
working conditions, the lowest unemployment in<lb />
three decades and a growing salary gap between<lb />
teachers and other college graduates - a difference<lb />
of more than $32,000 for experienced teachers with<lb />
master's degrees.<lb />
"Right now there is a national shortage of<lb />
teachers, particularly in rural areas because newer,<lb />
younger teachers don't have much social life after<lb />
work, and then for the teachers who might be<lb />
moving in from various states and cities, there<lb />
is a cultural gap they need to close said Yokima<lb />
Cureton, director of communication for ECU'S col-<lb />
lege of education.<lb />
To help conquer this economical and edu-<lb />
cational shortfall, the ECU college of education<lb />
and North Carolina Community College System<lb />
partnered to train and persuade teachers to work<lb />
in rural areas.<lb />
Known as Partnership East, the program pro-<lb />
vides education to aspiring teachers by delivering<lb />
instruction to them wherever they live.<lb />
"One of the strategies that the community<lb />
colleges and ECU's college of education came up<lb />
with was to identify this pool of talent and keep<lb />
the people and students who are already working<lb />
and living in these areas here in eastern North<lb />
Carolina said Cureton.<lb />

KRISTIN DAY<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Students and faculty have to<lb />
wait two more months to see a<lb />
completed Rivers Building.<lb />
Mark Myers, project manager,<lb />
planned to finish the building<lb />
Eeb. 27, but due to inclement<lb />
weather, the completion date<lb />
changed to May 6.<lb />
Myers said planning for reno-<lb />
vations began in 2000, but the<lb />
wait for bonds to pass for funding<lb />
to start the project took a while,<lb />
and actual construction on the<lb />
building did not begin until Janu-<lb />
ary 2003.<lb />
Myers said many projects<lb />
dedicate a year or two to plan-<lb />
ning and design, and an addi-<lb />
tional year or more could be<lb />
spent in construction.<lb />
Digging and weather were<lb />
both factors that set the comple-<lb />
tion back.<lb />
"Last spring was a very wet<lb />
spring plus, we've had some<lb />
fairly indecent weather here<lb />
lately said Myers.<lb />
The weather set the crew<lb />
behind more than two months,<lb />
but Rivers was never intended for<lb />
students until the fall semester.<lb />
The changes gave Rivers<lb />
mostly office space.<lb />
"That's the main purpose of<lb />
the building there's one large<lb />
lecture hall for 127 people<lb />
Myers said.<lb />
Myers said after they finish<lb />
construction they need some<lb />
time to finish the inside of the<lb />
building. Eaculty will begin to<lb />
move into these offices in late<lb />
May or early June.<lb />
The outside view of Rivers<lb />
will be more pleasant than what<lb />
students have seen over the last<lb />
few semesters. The finished reno-<lb />
vations will include a courtyard<lb />
see RIVERS page A2<lb />
The Rivers Building was scheduled to be finished in February<lb />

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP)<lb />
- The aftershocks of President<lb />
Jean Bertrand Aristide's departure<lb />
from Haiti echoed from the streets<lb />
of Port-Au-Prince to Washington<lb />
DC as rebels refused to fade<lb />
into the background and accusations<lb />
of a coup dogged American<lb />
officials.<lb />
U.S. Marines and French troops<lb />
secured key sites around the capital<lb />
on Monday, and rebels rolled into the<lb />
capital to cheering crowds as Haiti's<lb />
bloody uprising moved from the<lb />
streets to the political arena.<lb />
Aristide, currently in the Central African<lb />

in a telephone interview Monday that<lb />
he was "forced to leave" Haiti by US.<lb />

would "start shooting and be killing" if<lb />
he refused, but it was unclear if he was<lb />

At least 125 killed in attacks on Iraqi Shiite shrines<lb />
KARBA'A, Iraq (AP) <lb />
Simultaneous explosions ripped<lb />
through crowds of worshippers<lb />
luesday at Shiite Muslim shrines<lb />
in Baghdad and the holy city of<lb />
Kartell, killing at least 125. II was<lb />
the bloodiest day since the end ol<lb />
major lighting.<lb />
Ihe blasts in Iraq during<lb />
the Shiite festival ol Ashoura<lb />
coincided with a shooting attack<lb />
on Shiite worshippers in Quetta,<lb />
Pakistan, that killed at least 29<lb />
people and wounded more than<lb />
150. Ihe shootings touched oil<lb />
rioting in the city.<lb />
Ihe blasts in Karhala killed<lb />
so to 60 people, said Add Abdel-<lb />
Mahdi, a senior member of a<lb />
Shiite political party represented<lb />
on the l isappointed Governing<lb />
Council,<lb />
The nearly simultaneous<lb />
bombings at Baghdad's Kaimiya<lb />
shrine killed at least 75 people, he<lb />
said I lundreds were wounded in<lb />
both cities.<lb />
Ihe attacks sparked a wave<lb />
of Shiite outrage - much of it<lb />
directed at U.S. troops in the<lb />
Iraqi capital. American soldiers<lb />
who arrived at Kazimiya were<lb />
attacked by angry crowds throw-<lb />
ing stones and garbage, injuring<lb />
two Americans.<lb />
U.S. intelligence of lie lals<lb />
have long been concerned about<lb />
the possibility of militant attacks<lb />
during Ashoura. Last month, U.S.<lb />
officials released what they said<lb />
was a letter by Jordanian militant<lb />
Abu Mousab a I-Zarqawi outlining<lb />
a strategy of spectacular attacks<lb />
on Shiites, aimed at sparking a<lb />
Sunni-Shiite civil war.<lb />
The Iraqi Governing Council<lb />
condemned the "evil and terror-<lb />
ism that targets Iraqi unity and<lb />
seeks to en flame divisions among<lb />
the people" in a statement read by<lb />
a grim-faced Adnan Pachachi, a<lb />
Sunni Muslim on the council.<lb />
Ahdel-Mahdi said the Bagh-<lb />
dad blasts were believed to have<lb />
been caused by bombs, possibly<lb />
planted or carried by suicide<lb />
attackers.<lb />
Ihe karhala blasts, he added,<lb />
were believed caused by mortar<lb />
shells.<lb />
Council member Mouafakal-<lb />
Kubaie said there were Iranians<lb />
among those killed in Karhala,<lb />
but gave no exact figures, Grand<lb />
Ayatollah AM al-llusseini al-Sis-<lb />
tani, Iraq's most influential Shiite<lb />
cleric, will shortly issue a state-<lb />
ment appealing for c aim after the<lb />
attacks, al-Rubaic said.<lb />
Ahdel-Mahdi belongs to the<lb />
Supreme Council of the Islamic<lb />
Revolution in Iraq, SC1RI, led<lb />
by Abdel-Aiz al-llakim. Abelcl-<lb />
Mahdi routinely represents al-<lb />
llakim at Governing Council<lb />
sessions. SCIRI security officials<lb />
are known to be active in policing<lb />
Shiite shrines in Iraq.<lb />
The attacks in the two cities<lb />
took place nearly simultaneously<lb />
as tens of thousands of Shiite pil-<lb />
grims gathered for Ashoura, the<lb />
holiest day in the Shiite religious<lb />
calendar.<lb />
Dead and wounded were<lb />
loaded onto wooden carts nor-<lb />
mally used to ferry elderly pil-<lb />
grims to holy sites. Bodies ripped<lb />
apart by the force of the blasts lay<lb />
on the streets.<lb />
At about the same time, three<lb />
explosions went off inside and<lb />
outside of Baghdad's Kazimiya<lb />
shrine, which contains the tombs<lb />
of two other saints. Panicked men<lb />
and women, dressed in black, lied<lb />
screaming and weeping as ambu-<lb />
lances raced to the scene.<lb />
Crowds of enraged survivors<lb />
swarmed nearby hospitals, some<lb />
blaming Americans for stirring up<lb />
religious tensions by launching<lb />
the war, others blaming al-Qaida<lb />
or Sunni extremists.<lb />
Stone-throwing Iraqis<lb />
attacked Army medics trying<lb />
to help wounded at Kazimiya,<lb />

their high-walled compound<lb />
then trying to storm the gates.<lb />

Sept. 11 federal panel convenes to<lb />
push Bush meeting, Rice testimony<lb />
WASHINGTON (AP) The<lb />
federal panel reviewing the<lb />
Sept. II attacks has scheduled<lb />
interviews with former Presi-<lb />
dent Clinton and former Vice<lb />
President Al Gore this month<lb />
but is struggling to get similar<lb />
cooperation from President Bush<lb />
and administration officials.<lb />
Members of the bipartisan<lb />
commission said they were<lb />
considering a subpoena to force<lb />
the public testimony of national<lb />
security adviser Condoleezza<lb />
Rice. She has declined to appear<lb />
.it the panel's two-day bearing<lb />
later this month.<lb />
"The commission wants to go<lb />
back in the court of public opin-<lb />
ion and appeal to the adminis-<lb />
tration for them to reconsider<lb />
their first stand said commis-<lb />
sioner Timothy Roemer, a former<lb />
Democratic congressman from<lb />
Indiana.<lb />
"If we don't get that kind of<lb />
cooperation, compelling Dr. Rice<lb />
to come before us is an option<lb />
The White House said Tues-<lb />
day that Rice's testimony was a<lb />
constitutional issue of separation<lb />
of powers.<lb />
"As a matter of law and prac-<lb />
tice, White House staff have<lb />
not testified before legislative<lb />
bodies National Security Coun-<lb />
cil spokesman Scan McCormack<lb />
said.<lb />
" this is not a matter of Dr.<lb />
Rice's preferences<lb />
The 10-member commission<lb />
also requested private meetings<lb />
with Hush and Vice President<lb />
Dick Cheney about what the<lb />
administration knew before the<lb />
attacks, potentially a sensitive<lb />
subject in an election year.<lb />
While Clinton and Gore have<lb />
consented to public questioning<lb />
without a time constraint, Bush<lb />
and Cheney have agreed only<lb />
to private, separate, one-hour<lb />
meetings with the commission's<lb />
chairman and vice chairman,<lb />
instead of the full panel.<lb />
The commission was meeting<lb />
Tuesday to discuss options as it<lb />
seeks to hold private interviews<lb />
with the four official before Its<lb />
In November 2002, President Bush signed legislation creating a new independent commission<lb />
to investigate the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11.2001 and named former Secretary of State Henry<lb />
Kissinger, left, to lead the panel.<lb />
next hearing. The interviews<lb />
with Clinton and (lore were<lb />
scheduled for "the next couple<lb />
of weeks the commission said.<lb />
The latest dispute also comes<lb />
as the panel seeks additional<lb />
time from Congress to complete<lb />
its work. House Speaker Dennis<lb />
Hastert, R-lll agreed Iriday to<lb />
support extending the panel's<lb />
deadline to July 26, clearing the<lb />
way for Congress to formally<lb />
approve legislation this week.<lb />
The panel was scheduled to<lb />
finish its work on May 27.<lb />
The commission and its sup-<lb />
porters wanted a two-month<lb />
extension of both dates, but<lb />
met resistance among House<lb />
GOP leaders, partly because of<lb />
concern that a final report would<lb />
get entangled with presidential<lb />
election politics. ,<lb />
Mastert's proposal would not<lb />
give the commission any time to<lb />
wind down its business, a period<lb />
during which commissioners<lb />
lobby for implementation of<lb />
their recommendations on how<lb />
to prevent future terror attacks<lb />
and declassify information for<lb />
public release.<lb />
A congressional inquiry into<lb />
the Sept. 11 attacks took seven<lb />
months to declassify informa-<lb />
tion, a process that involves<lb />
white House approval.<lb />
Under the current deadline,<lb />
the commission has a 60-day<lb />
period to wind down.<lb />
The Senate bill would give it<lb />
just SO days.<lb />
The chairman and vice chair-<lb />
man of the commission, former<lb />
New Jersey Republican Gov,<lb />
Thomas ll. Kean and former Rep.<lb />
I.ee Hamilton, D-lnd planned<lb />
to meet separately with Hasten<lb />
on Tuesday to push for a longer<lb />
wind-down period.<lb />
"We're very hopeful that we<lb />
can find a way with the House<lb />
bill and the Senate bill to come<lb />
together said commission<lb />
spokesman Al Kelzenberg.<lb />
At the panel's next hearing<lb />
on counterterrorism policy.<lb />
Defense Secretary Donald II.<lb />
Rumsfeld and Secretary of State<lb />
Colin Powell are to testify, as<lb />
well as their counterparts in<lb />
the Clinton administration,<lb />
William Cohen and Madeleine<lb />
Albright.<lb />
Clinton's national security<lb />
adviser, Sandy Berger, also Is<lb />
to appear at that open session,<lb />
which commission officials say<lb />
will be unprecedented in its<lb />
review of high-level officials in<lb />

tions.<lb />
Prosecution, defense present closing<lb />
arguments in Martha Stewart case<lb />
NKW YORK (AP) Maintain-<lb />
ing her grim poker face, Martha<lb />
Stewart sat quietly as prosecutors<lb />
borrowed some of the homemak-<lb />
ing icon's methodical approach<lb />
in carefully pulling together<lb />
their case for the jury hearing<lb />
her stock trial.<lb />
"Martha Stewart probably<lb />
thought she would never get<lb />
caught said prosecutor Michael<lb />
Schachter during closing argu-<lb />
ments Monday. But she "left<lb />
behind a trail of evidence<lb />
Schachter said that trail<lb />
included contradictory state-<lb />
ments, an altered phone log<lb />
and the testimony of brokerage<lb />
assistant Douglas Faneuil, a pros-<lb />
ecution witness who undercut<lb />
Stewart's story.<lb />
Stewart and her broker, Peter<lb />
llacanovic, face nine federal<lb />
counts related to the sale of about<lb />
$225,000 worth of ImClone<lb />
Systems stock on Dec. 27, 2001,<lb />
the day before the stock tanked<lb />
on news that the government<lb />
declined to review the firm's<lb />
cancer drug. While Stewart is<lb />
not charged with insider trading,<lb />
the government says she lied to<lb />
Investigators about the sale.<lb />
Schachter tried to dismantle<lb />
the centerpiece of the pair's<lb />
defense - they bad struck a deal<lb />
before Dec. 27 to sell Stewart's<lb />
shares when ImClone stock<lb />
dropped below $60. The pros-<lb />
ecutor called the story "phony<lb />
"silly" and "simply an aftcr-tbe-<lb />
fact cover story<lb />
following Schachter'S pre-<lb />
sentation, Bacanovic lawyer<lb />
Richard Strassberg attacked<lb />
Faneuil's credibility for more<lb />
than two hours, even alluding<lb />
to the Academy Awards and<lb />
suggesting he was acting on the<lb />
witness stand.<lb />
"You can't prove a case like<lb />
this based solely on the worst<lb />
of a person<lb />
like this, a<lb />
person with<lb />
an incredible<lb />
motive to lie<lb />
said Stras-<lb />
sberg.<lb />
Strassberg<lb />
also stressed<lb />
Bacanovic's<lb />
reputation as<lb />
a trustworthy,<lb />
meticulous<lb />
broker and<lb />
said Bacanovic<lb />
never would<lb />
have risked his<lb />
career for the<lb />
Stewart trade,<lb />
which earned<lb />
him just $450<lb />
in commis-<lb />
sions.<lb />
The broker<lb />
taking such a<lb />
risk "makes no<lb />
sense Strassberg said.<lb />
Strassberg was to continue<lb />
his closing argument Tuesday<lb />
morning. Later in the day,<lb />
Stewart's lawyer was to present<lb />
his. Jurors are expected to begin<lb />
deciding the case Wednesday.<lb />
Strassberg spent more than<lb />
two hours attacking the credibil-<lb />
ity of Faneuil, Bacanovic's former<lb />
assistant who said he passed a tip<lb />
that ImClone CEO Sam Waksal<lb />
and his family were dumping the<lb />
stock from llacanovic to Stewart.<lb />
Faneuil and the government<lb />
have a cooperation agreement<lb />
- clear motive for him to "Shade<lb />
the truth Strassberg said.<lb />
Strassberg insisted Faneuil<lb />
was slar-struck by Stewart, and<lb />
suggested it was he who came<lb />
up with the idea to tell Stewart<lb />
about the Waksal selling.<lb />
"He lies by just twisting a<lb />
lew little facts, a few key facts<lb />
Strassberg said.<lb />
Stewart faces nine federal charges for $225,000 in sales of ImClone stock.<lb />
"But those facts are crucial<lb />
Earlier, Schachter listed<lb />
inconsistencies - mistakes, he<lb />
called them - in the stories Stew-<lb />
art and Bacanovic told federal<lb />
investigators looking into the<lb />
ImClone trade in early 2002.<lb />
lor example, Bacanovic<lb />
claimed they had the $60 con-<lb />
versation on Dec. 20, 2001. But<lb />
Stewart placed it with the Merrill<lb />
Lynch J Co. broker in late Octo-<lb />
ber or early November.<lb />
And Schachter took jurors<lb />
back to Jan. 31, 2002, four days<lb />
before Stewart was lirst ques-<lb />
tioned about ImClone, when<lb />
she allegedly tampered with a<lb />
log nl a message Bacanovic had<lb />
left her the day she sold.<lb />
Stewart quickly ordered her<lb />
assistant to restore the message<lb />
to its original wording, accord-<lb />
ing to the assistant's testimony.<lb />
But the fact that she altered it at<lb />
all is evidence she was worried<lb />
about why she had sold the stock,<lb />
Schachter said.<lb />
Stewart and Bacanovic<lb />
concocted the $60 cover story<lb />
because "they saw the tacts as<lb />
plainly as you do Schachter<lb />
said.<lb />
"They know it looked as bad<lb />
as it actually was<lb />
After U.S. District Judge<lb />
Miriam Goldman Cedarbaura<lb />
dismissed the top count of secu-<lb />
rities fraud last week, jurors were<lb />
left with charges of conspiracy,<lb />
obstruction of justice and lying<lb />
to investigators.<lb />
The remaining counts<lb />
against Stewart carry up to<lb />
20 years in prison, although<lb />
federal sentencing guidelines<lb />
could mean a sentence ol just a<lb />
year or so if she is convicted on<lb />
all counts. The charges against<lb />
llacanovic carry 25 years, but<lb />
the guidelines would similarly<lb />
reduce his sentence.<lb />

Supreme Court revisits claim of censorship<lb />
WASHINGTON (AP) Kids,<lb />
don't try this at home.<lb />
The Bush administration's<lb />
top Supreme ourt lawyer says<lb />
he typed the words "free porn"<lb />
into an Internet search engine<lb />
on Ins In Hue computer and got<lb />
a list ol more than 6 million<lb />
Well Mies<lb />
That's proof. Solicitor Cien-<lb />
eral Theodore Olson told the<lb />
Supreme Court on Tuesday, of<lb />
the need for a law protecting<lb />
children from a tide of online<lb />
smut.<lb />
Internet porn is "persistent<lb />
and unavoidable Olson told<lb />
the court, and government has<lb />
a strong interest in shielding<lb />
teenagers and younger children<lb />
from it.<lb />
I he problem, as the Supreme<lb />
( ourt has observed before, Is<lb />
that a lot of dirty pictures are<lb />
constitutionally protected free<lb />
speech that adults have the right<lb />
to see and buy. Children donl<lb />
have the same rights, but kids<lb />
,n. adults alike can surf the<lb />
Web.<lb />
I'orn is "as easily available to<lb />
children as a television remote<lb />
Olson told the ustices as he<lb />
defended a 1998 law that Con-<lb />
gress meant as a firewall to shield<lb />
children.<lb />
The Child Online Protec-<lb />
tion Act has never taken effect.<lb />
A federal appeals court stunk<lb />
down the law twice, on separate<lb />
constitutional grounds, and it is<lb />
now before the Supreme ourt<lb />
for a second time<lb />
The law, known as OPA, .is<lb />
a replacement lor a broader law<lb />
that the Supreme Court rejected<lb />
as unconstitutional in 1997.<lb />
Congress retooled the<lb />
law to address the high court's<lb />
free speech concerns, Olson<lb />
said.<lb />
Several justices weren't<lb />
buying it.<lb />
"It seems to me this is very<lb />
sweeping Justice Vnthony M.<lb />
Kennedy said at one point.<lb />
If porn sellers are flouting the<lb />
existing laws about obscenity,<lb />
perhaps the government should<lb />
go after them more aggressively,<lb />
justice Sandra Day O'Connor<lb />
suggested.<lb />
The Bush administration<lb />
has brought 21 indictment in<lb />
two years alleging that Web site<lb />
operators and others crossed<lb />
the line from acceptable smut<lb />
to illegal obscenity, Olson told<lb />
the court<lb />
"With such a vast array of<lb />
sites, there are so few prosecu-<lb />
tions O'Connor said. "It's just<lb />
amazing<lb />
COPA would make it a<lb />
crime for commercial Web site<lb />
operators to knowingly place<lb />
material that is harmful to chil-<lb />
dren within their unrestricted<lb />
online reach. Violators can face<lb />
sis months in jail and<lb />
civil and criminal penalties ol<lb />
$50,000.<lb />
The law is meant to go<lb />
.iller the really bad guys,<lb />
Olson argued, lie suggested<lb />
that the American Civil<lb />
Liberties Union and other<lb />
opponents of the law are crying<lb />
wolf.<lb />
It's tlic government that is<lb />
being unrealistic, ACI.U lawyer<lb />
Ann Beeson countered.<lb />
The law "criminalizes a<lb />
depiction or description of<lb />
nudity, or even a description of<lb />
the female breast Beeson told<lb />
the justnes.<lb />
The ACl.ll challenged the law<lb />
on behalf of online bookstores,<lb />
artists and others, including<lb />
operators of Web sites that offer<lb />
explicit how-to sex advice or<lb />
health information.<lb />
Among them is Mitch Tepper,<lb />
whose Web site dispenses very<lb />
specific instructions to help the<lb />
disabled enjoy sex. One article<lb />
he has posted online is titled<lb />
"Handsfree Whoopie<lb />
Pepper risks jail time if some<lb />
prosecutor somewhere finds his<lb />
material "harmful to minors<lb />
the ACI.U argued. COPA<lb />
gives no absolute definition ol<lb />
Easy access to Internet porn has been questioned due to harmful effects on children.<lb />
what is "harmful to minors<lb />
leaving that in part to "the aver-<lb />
age person, applying contempo-<lb />
rary community standards<lb />
The ACLU maintains<lb />
that the community standards<lb />
test is meaningless when<lb />
applied to the far-flung Inter-<lb />
net, but the Supreme C ourt ruled<lb />
two years ago that that<lb />
claim is not enough, on its<lb />
own, to make the law uncon-<lb />
stitutional. The high court is<lb />
expected to issue a more defini-<lb />
tive ruling by summer.<lb />
California votes on Schwarzenegger's plan to rescue budget<lb />
LOS ANGELES (AIM <lb />
With California's fiscal health<lb />
and Ciov. Arnold Schwar-<lb />
zenegger's political standing<lb />
hanging in the balance,<lb />
voters decided Tuesday whether<lb />
to approve SIS billion in<lb />
borrowing to bail out the state<lb />
budget.<lb />
Schwarzenegger has used<lb />
his celebrity and his<lb />
political capital to try to build<lb />
support lor the bond<lb />
measure, theceterpieceof his plan<lb />
to solve the state's financial woes<lb />
without what he warned<lb />
would he "Armageddon" budget<lb />
cuts or higher taxes<lb />
The bond measure the<lb />
nation's largest ever to<lb />
appear on a statewide<lb />
ballot would be used to refi-<lb />
nance California's debt and<lb />
help close next year's budget<lb />
ap.<lb />
The success or failure of<lb />
Proposition 57 was seen as<lb />
the biggest test yet of Schwar-<lb />
zenegger's influence with the<lb />
voters who swept him into<lb />
office in a recall election<lb />
just five months ago.<lb />
"One ol the reasons<lb />
Schwarzenegger is wielding so<lb />
much political Influence is<lb />
his perceived impact on the<lb />
electorate hi ability<lb />
to communicate and take<lb />
matters directly to Un-<lb />
people said COP strategist<lb />
Allan Hoffenblum. "Should<lb />
he lose on Tuesday, it<lb />
could weaken his ability to<lb />
do that on other matters in the<lb />
future<lb />
A recent California Field<lb />

Schwarzenegger voted Tues-<lb />
day morning in a recreation<lb />
center near his Brentwood<lb />
home. "It is very Important for<lb />
people to support this because<lb />
it will save the state and it<lb />
will get us back on track to<lb />
fiscal recovery he said.<lb />
The governor has been<lb />
barnstorming the state in<lb />
support of tlie bond measure.<lb />
Last week, the movie<lb />
star-turned-governor held a<lb />
rally at Universal Studios<lb />
with actor Rob l.owe and threw<lb />
T-shirts to supporters. On<lb />
Monday, he went to Jay<lb />
l.eno's "The Tonight Show"<lb />
to tout the bond measure a<lb />
longside the man he<lb />
ousted former Democratic<lb />
Gov. Ciray Davis.<lb />
Backers have warned of<lb />
a potential financial meltdown<lb />
if the bond fails, though the<lb />
state still has possibility<lb />
of a backup $10.7 billion bond<lb />
issue now in the courts on a<lb />
legal challenge.<lb />
State lawmakers can also<lb />
roll si i billion in short-<lb />
term state debt into the new<lb />
fiscal year, as they have clone<lb />
the past two years.<lb />
Two other issues are on<lb />
the ballot. Proposition SS<lb />
would sell $12.3 billion in<lb />
bonds to pay for new<lb />
and improved schools, and<lb />
I'roposition 56 would lower to<lb />
55 percent the support needed<lb />
in the Legislature to pass a<lb />
budget. Currently, budgets<lb />
need at least two-thirds<lb />
support.<lb />
The deficit bond and<lb />
school bond issues would raise<lb />
California's long-term debt<lb />
to about $59 billion and<lb />
earmark more than 6 percent<lb />
of the state's annual budget<lb />
for interest payments.<lb />

Our View<lb />
matter what<lb />
the<lb />
evidence<lb />
and<lb />
witnesses<lb />
say, and no<lb />
matter what<lb />
the crime,<lb />
will we really<lb />
see either of<lb />
these famous<lb />
faces behind<lb />
bars?<lb />
But no Celebrities like Wjnona Ryder, O.J. Simpson,<lb />
Martha Stewart and Michael Jackson have<lb />
all appeared in the media for their successes<lb />
and failures.<lb />
What we want to know is, do celebrities really<lb />
get punished for their wrongdoings, or do juries<lb />
and judges tend to look the other way because<lb />
of their celebrity status?<lb />
Both Ryder and Simpson have appeared nega-<lb />
tively in the media during their careers.<lb />
Ryder was arrested for shoplifting at a Saks<lb />
Fifth Avenue store in Beverly Hills. Simpson<lb />
was accused of brutally murdering his wife,<lb />
Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron<lb />
Goldman.<lb />
Even though there was an overwhelming<lb />
amount of evidence in each of these cases,<lb />
both celebrities were spared jail time.<lb />
We cannot help but wonder, if the same accu-<lb />
sations and evidence were charged to the<lb />
face and name of an average citizen, would<lb />
the outcome be the same?<lb />
Could someone that shoplifted more than<lb />
$3,000 worth of merchandise, molested chil-<lb />
dren or murdered their wife really get away with<lb />
all these things if there name was not associ-<lb />
ated with the latest movie or the best song?<lb />
For celebrities like Jackson and Stewart, whose<lb />
cases still await a verdict, opinions about their<lb />
guilt or innocence are splattered all over the<lb />
media.<lb />
But no matter what the evidence and wit-<lb />
nesses say, and no matter what the crime,<lb />
will we really see either of these famous faces<lb />
behind bars?<lb />
Celebrities not only have the money to afford<lb />
the best attorneys, but they also have that<lb />
"larger than life" image that average citizens<lb />
lack.<lb />
No one could really picture Stewart calling a<lb />
prison cell "home or Winona Ryder decked<lb />
out in a prison uniform.<lb />
Celebrities only play these parts on-screen,<lb />
not in real life.<lb />

In My Opinion<lb />
Marriage is a privilege,<lb />
not a right<lb />
In My Opinion<lb />
A nation at war<lb />
Allowing gay marriage<lb />
could have snowball effect<lb />
ANTHONY MCKEE<lb />
OPINION COLUMNIST<lb />
President George Hush did the<lb />
right thing when he announced<lb />
support for a Constitutional<lb />
Amendment that would define<lb />
marriage as being between a man<lb />
and a woman.<lb />
There never has been a "right"<lb />
to marry. Marriage is a privilege,<lb />
not a right.<lb />
the issue and the stakes are<lb />
about the institution of marriage<lb />
and not changing its definition<lb />
just because it suits somebody's<lb />
needs at the moment.<lb />
If we allow marriage to be<lb />
defined by current social "sensitivi-<lb />
ties there will be no right to deny<lb />
marriage to other non-traditional<lb />
groups, Once we start down that<lb />
road, there's no telling what we as<lb />
a society will be forced to recognie<lb />
as "marriage<lb />
There are prohibitions against<lb />
marrying direct family members.<lb />
Fathers cannot marry daughters,<lb />
mothers their sons, brothers and<lb />
sisters cannot wed, even first cous-<lb />
ins are barred from marriage.<lb />
If we change the definition of<lb />
marriage to allow same sex couples<lb />
to marry, would we have the right<lb />
to deny familial weddings<lb />
What about multiple spouses?<lb />
If same sex couples are allowed<lb />
to wed, how can we prevent people<lb />
from marrying multiple partners?<lb />
I speak not just of a man mar-<lb />
rying more than one woman.<lb />
Women would have to be allowed<lb />
to marry more than one man.<lb />
Come to think of it, men would<lb />
be allowed to marry more than<lb />
one man, and women would be<lb />
allowed to have multiple wives<lb />
also. Why not? Marriage is what-<lb />
ever we define it as, right? But let's<lb />
not stop there,<lb />
All current laws governing stat-<lb />
utory rape and pedophilia would<lb />
eventually have to be thrown out.<lb />
Why, you ask? Because sex with<lb />
children would have to be legal-<lb />
ized. Adults would be allowed to<lb />
marry children no matter what<lb />
their age. Everybody knows that<lb />
sex before marriage is expected<lb />
so any adultchild relationships<lb />
would have to be condoned.<lb />
NAMB1.A, the North Ameri-<lb />
can Man Boy Love Association,<lb />
has for years been advocating<lb />
for the legalization of not only<lb />
adultchild sex, but manboy<lb />
sex specifically.<lb />
They are practicing pedo-<lb />
philes and are proud of it. Their<lb />
Web site sings the praises of men<lb />
"loving" boys. These "relation-<lb />
ships" would eventually have to<lb />
be condoned.<lb />
Are you beginning to see the<lb />
problem?<lb />
I can almost hear the out-<lb />
raged cries as you read this of<lb />
"This would never happen<lb />
Really? One of I he arguments for<lb />
recognizing same sex marriage is<lb />
that "other countries are enlight-<lb />
ened enough to recognizeallow<lb />
it Well, guess what?<lb />
Lvery situation that I have<lb />
described is practiced in at<lb />
least one other country on this<lb />
planet, as NAMBI.A and several<lb />
polygamy Web sites are quick to<lb />
point out. Still don't think it can<lb />
happen?<lb />
The most divisive issue of<lb />
our time, morally, ethically and<lb />
socially, is abortion. It started<lb />
as being allowed only if the<lb />
mother's life was in immediate<lb />
danger and there was absolutely<lb />
no alternative.<lb />
Abortion has now progressed<lb />
to where a baby can be killed by<lb />
sticking a needle in its skull at the<lb />
moment of birth.<lb />
Incidentally, this procedure<lb />
has been used by the Com-<lb />
munist Chinese as a forced<lb />
population control measure for<lb />
years.<lb />
Makes you wonder where<lb />
the abortion rights people got<lb />
the idea - but that's lor another<lb />
article.<lb />
I believe that any attempt to<lb />
change the Constitution should<lb />
never be taken lightly. However,<lb />
if there was ever a reason to do<lb />
so, this is it. The sanctity of the<lb />
institution of marriage must be<lb />
protected.<lb />

too.<lb />
This something was an .isler-<lb />
oid. And scientists were so worried<lb />
about it in mid-January that they<lb />
came within nine hours of calling<lb />
President Bush.<lb />
The chance that a big asteroid<lb />
will strike within any person's life-<lb />
time is exceedingly small. But we<lb />
ought to have something better in<lb />
place than the current Utosc con-<lb />
federation of scientists that is the<lb />
main lookout.<lb />
About Jan. 13, that informal<lb />
system - which relies on scientists'<lb />
brains and cooperation, rather than<lb />
an alert algorithm - didn't work tx<lb />
well. Thanks to an asteroid named<lb />
2004 AS1, that system is being<lb />
reviewed.<lb />
All sorts of astronomers arc-<lb />
looking constantly at the sky.<lb />
When someone discovers a new<lb />
asteroid, he tells an outfit called<lb />
the Minor Planetenter, located in<lb />
Cambridge, Mass. The Mit! sts<lb />
the discovery on the Internet and<lb />
asks the scientific community to<lb />
send in more observations.<lb />
In the end. some amateur sky<lb />
jockey got an unclouded shot of<lb />
2004 AS1, and, whew, false alarm,<lb />
don't call. Little 2004 AS1 missed<lb />
us by 7 million miles. Hood thing.<lb />
Turned out it was more like SIX)<lb />
meters wide.<lb />
So we ducked one high, tight<lb />
fastball. But we should - and can<lb />
- do better next time.<lb />
We need a tighter system,<lb />
probably an international system,<lb />
of level-headed scientists who will<lb />
place the call only when they see<lb />
no other choice.<lb />
Pre-emption is<lb />
dangerous precedent<lb />
for America<lb />
PETER KALAJIAN<lb />
STAFF WHITER<lb />
When Coalition military forces<lb />
invaded Iraq in March 2003, the<lb />
war-hawks in the Bush administra-<lb />
tion ushered in a dangerous new<lb />
era in American foreign policy.<lb />
In his first speech to an Ameri-<lb />
can public, still reeling from the<lb />
horror of Sept. 11, Bush outlined<lb />
a plan which was designed to root<lb />
out terror "all over the globe" and<lb />
gave a frightening ultimatum to<lb />
the rest of the world: You're either<lb />
with us or against us.<lb />
Sure, the rhetoric sounded<lb />
great to an American people<lb />
bent on revenge for the shock of<lb />
the World Trade Center bombing<lb />
and the renewed danger of<lb />
international terrorism, but the<lb />
political nuts and bolts of this<lb />
policy were given much less<lb />
thought than the immediate pos-<lb />
turing of a super-power after an<lb />
unprecedented attack.<lb />
For decades leading up to<lb />
Sept. II, the U.S. military had<lb />
operated under a policy of "the<lb />
enemy ot my enemy is my friend"<lb />
and had engaged in military and<lb />
diplomatic operations to support<lb />
this doctrine. Unfortunately, the<lb />
enemy of our enemy is very often<lb />
not our friend.<lb />
Many of the groups and indi-<lb />
viduals the United States supported<lb />
with this ideal later came to pose<lb />
the greatest perceived threats to<lb />
American national security, both<lb />
at home and abroad.<lb />
The Bush administration's<lb />
military forays into places like<lb />
Iraq, Afghanistan and the Middle<lb />
Last are direct results of the diplo-<lb />
matic miscalculations made by past<lb />
administrations.<lb />
In the wake of Sept. 11, the<lb />
American people were looking for<lb />
someone to blame - a face, a name,<lb />
one particular organization where<lb />
we could point our collective fin-<lb />
gers and say, "It was them. They hit<lb />
us, now we must hit them<lb />
For many people, including<lb />
myself, that face belonged to<lb />
Osama Bin Laden and his world-<lb />
wide terror net. al Qaeda.<lb />
1 he U.S. Navy launched imme-<lb />
diate cruise missile attacks on the<lb />
third world nation ot Afghanistan<lb />
with the intention of removing the<lb />
pro-Bin Laden fundamentalist Tal-<lb />
iban regime there and it worked. In<lb />
short order, the mighty American<lb />
military machine had removed<lb />
the Taliban from power and had<lb />
begun the long process of recon-<lb />
struction, but Bin Laden remained<lb />
elusive.<lb />
When Secretary of Defense<lb />
Donald Rumsfeld and President<lb />
Bush spoke of the war in Afghani-<lb />
stan, they failed to inform the<lb />
American people of the reality of<lb />
the situation.<lb />
In I98S, when the Soviet<lb />
Union Invaded Afghanistan to<lb />
prop up the Communist puppet<lb />
regime in Kabul, theentral Intel-<lb />
ligence Agency went on a scnd-<lb />
ing spree, siphoning billions of<lb />
tax dollars through the Pakistani<lb />
Intelligence Service to - who else<lb />
- Bin Laden and his revolutionary<lb />
mujahadeen.<lb />
The United states supplied<lb />
the Muslim fundamentalists<lb />
with sophisticated weaponry and<lb />
advanced military training.<lb />
We Funded the construction of<lb />
the training camps, which would<lb />
be used IS years later to educate<lb />
the 9-11 hijackers in the use of<lb />
explosive and combat tactics. Bin<lb />
Laden received the majority of the<lb />
military training for his group ot<lb />
fanatics from John Q. American<lb />
Taxpayer.<lb />
When it was over and the<lb />
Afghan resistance had succeeded<lb />
in expelling the Soviet invaders,<lb />
they turned their attention to the<lb />
West.<lb />
Iraq is another perfect example<lb />
of short-sighted American foreign<lb />
policy coming back to haunt us.<lb />
During the war between Iraq<lb />
and Iran during the 1980s, the<lb />
Reagan administration decided<lb />
that this evil dictator, a man<lb />
who had murdered thousands of<lb />
his own people with nerve gas<lb />
attacks and executed thousands<lb />
more as political dissidents,<lb />
should be on the American<lb />
payroll.<lb />
He was the enemy of our<lb />
enemy, Iran, a nation which had<lb />
installed a fundamentalist Muslim<lb />
government in the 1979 revolution<lb />
and had from then on been hostile<lb />
to the West.<lb />
Again, the United States sup-<lb />
plied Saddam Hussein with bil-<lb />
lions in military and economic<lb />
aid and weapons of war that would<lb />
otherwise have been beyond his<lb />
reach.<lb />
The war between Iraq and<lb />
Iran ended in stalemate in 1988<lb />
when the Iraqi government once<lb />
again became hostile to the United<lb />
States. A little more than two years<lb />
later, Hussein's army, strengthened<lb />
by American hardware and foreign<lb />
aid, invaded Kuwait and started<lb />
the first Gulf War.<lb />
The American diplomatic<lb />
ethos of forced cooperation and<lb />
political coersion, unfortunately<lb />
for us, is a self-fulfilling prophecy.<lb />
By forcing other nations - either<lb />
through economic sanctions<lb />
or outright military threats - to<lb />
coo)erate in our "War on Terror<lb />
we further alienate the people<lb />
of those nations and create the<lb />
very threat we are trying to<lb />
counteract.<lb />
By stationing American<lb />
ground forces on Holy Muslim<lb />
soil in Saudi Arabia and forcing<lb />
national democratization in Iraq<lb />
and Afghanistan, the United<lb />
States is creating international<lb />
hatred for the American govern-<lb />
ment and consequently stirring<lb />
up support for the "evildoers as<lb />
President Bush so eloquently refers<lb />
to them.<lb />
This perceived international<lb />
campaign to bully and cajole our<lb />
"allies" into cooperating with us<lb />
in the "War on Terror in the<lb />
end, will accomplish very little<lb />
other than ensuring half-hearted<lb />
cooperation and ferment increased<lb />
hatred for Americans.<lb />
The Bush administration has<lb />
succeeded, through military and<lb />
economic coercion and govern-<lb />
mental imperialism, in creating<lb />
more terrorists and terrorist sym-<lb />
pathizers than any recruitment<lb />
campaign by al-Qaeda could ever<lb />
hope.<lb /><lb /><pb facs="00059492_tn_0006" /><lb />

TOMEKA STEELE<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
As college students, we<lb />
should realize the Impor-<lb />
tance of time manage-<lb />
ment, but some of us rarely<lb />
master tin skill. Instead,<lb />
we procrastinate, party and<lb />
only find time to study the<lb />
night before an exam. If you<lb />
could manage your time elli-<lb />
i lently, excelling in ai ademii s<lb />
would be a breeze.<lb />
Planning the lust way to<lb />
organize what sou need and<lb />
want to do to increase accom-<lb />
plishments is time manage-<lb />
ment.<lb />
Students have to balam e<lb />
classes, study time, family,<lb />
friends and jobs. It may seem<lb />
like a student can never find<lb />
the time to focus on studies<lb />
Students should realize that<lb />
the number one reason we arc-<lb />
in college is to receive an edu-<lb />
cation. Thus, our grades should<lb />
In- our first priority.<lb />
Time management takes<lb />
self-discipline - sacrificing<lb />
something you'd rather do for<lb />
something that may not be fun<lb />
but will help in the long run.<lb />
I In- lirst step to time man-<lb />
agement is prioritizing.<lb />
The best way to prioritize is<lb />
to make lists, (house which<lb />
things are important and do<lb />
those lirst.<lb />
An erasable calen-<lb />
dar is an excellent way to<lb />
accomplish this. The calendar<lb />
should be out in the open,<lb />
constantly visible since col-<lb />
lege students have weekly<lb />
classes, it's better to go on a<lb />
weekly schedule than a daily<lb />
schedule.<lb />
Go through class syllabuses<lb />
anil inc lude test dates .1 Mil quiz<lb />
dates on the calendar, Include<lb />
when proeits and homework<lb />
are due. Since they'll be in<lb />
plain view everyday, it will be<lb />
hardei to forget something.<lb />
The second step to good<lb />
tune management is ellei tive<lb />
si heduling. hen making .1<lb />
schedule for classes, be aware<lb />
of how mm h t iuie there is<lb />
between classes. Ibis will pre-<lb />
sent being CXI cssively late.<lb />
It isn't a great idea<lb />
to have an overload of<lb />
classes in one day because<lb />
your mind can't stay atlen-<lb />

Scheduling meals is impor-<lb />
tant as well. Plan when to eat<lb />
and stick to it. 1 ins will open<lb />

"It's not like I'm a feminist or<lb />
anything. It's music for anyone<lb />

Watson is based out of west-<lb />

beyond her years. She has the<lb />
bluesy, bittersweet quality that<lb />
makes Norah Jones so great, but<lb />
Watson is willing to take the<lb />

it overall a mm h more satisfying<lb />

The group consists of about<lb />
IS - 30 people.<lb />
"People come and go, but<lb />

said Amara Dumlao, SAGA<lb />
president.<lb />
The club was founded in 1996<lb />
by two ECU alumni, Brian I'errv<lb />
and Andre Germain.<lb />
"It was an attempt to give<lb />
more Japanese culture to<lb />
the masses. This was before<lb />
anime was really known about<lb />
in America Dumlao said.<lb />
A typical meeting, held<lb />
every Wednesday from 7 p.m.<lb />

Student Center, consists of<lb />
a presentation of a Japanese<lb />
anime film. If you are on the<lb />
executive committee, then you<lb />
can help pick which film is going<lb />
to be shown every week.<lb />
"I think the fact that<lb />
people who belong to SAGA are<lb />
really close-knit, spreading the<lb />

said.<lb />
Those who are a part of<lb />
the club have a unique interest<lb />
in anime as a hobby. Many of<lb />
the members are also involved<lb />
with Japanese classes or<lb />
Asian history. Anime is a big<lb />
part of the customs and tra-<lb />

Asian countries.<lb />
"The earliest lapancse ani-<lb />

five minutes each in 1917<lb />

"Animation of the 1920s ran<lb />
from one to three reels. A few<lb />
were imitations of foreign<lb />

Time<lb />
from page A6<lb />
extremely unprofessional to<lb />
forget or be late.<lb />
Setting time aside for study-<lb />
ing and completing homework<lb />
is essential for effective time<lb />
management.<lb />
Write out study times on the<lb />
calendar as well. Look over class<lb />
notes once a day until the test.<lb />
Even if it's only IS minutes<lb />
a day, reading over the notes<lb />
will put that information<lb />
into long-term memory. This<lb />
cuts down cramming tremen-<lb />
dously.<lb />
When an assignment is<lb />
given out, it's best to complete<lb />
that assignment the same<lb />
day.<lb />
Ibis way, you can study for<lb />
that subject and complete the<lb />
assign men t simultaneously,<lb />
which prevents the tendency<lb />
to forget about it.<lb />
"I don't really have a<lb />
plan for managing my time.<lb />
There never seems to be enough<lb />
time in the day I have learned<lb />
to write assignments down and<lb />
I do those tilings first. That<lb />
saves me a lot of time said<lb />
Tiffany Kenner, sophomore<lb />
communication major.<lb />
Making note cards for sub-<lb />
jects with a lot of information<lb />
is a good way to cut down on<lb />
study time.<lb />
Instead of going<lb />
through pages and pages of<lb />
notes, simply whip through<lb />
note cards two or three times<lb />

The only recurring thought I had after last night's episode of "American<lb />
Idol" was, "How in the world did Lisa Wilson make it to the semi-finals?" She<lb />
stunk in the auditions, she forgot her lines In the quarterfinal! and last night<lb />
she pathetically screamed her way through what was supposed to be a rendi-<lb />
tion of Melissa Ethridge's "Come to My Window Paula, Randy and Simon<lb />
- what were you thinking?<lb />
It's a tough pick to say who will go on to the next round. I really like Heather<lb />
Piccinni and John Stevens' voices, hut ! think their song selection will prevent<lb />
them from moving on. Expect Hawaiian Jasmine Trias and smooth crooner<lb />
George Huff to advance tonight.<lb />

Heather Piccinini's version of "New Attitude" left much to be desired, in<lb />
comparison to Kimnerly Caldwell. with whom she was associated with in the<lb />
auditions, Piccinini cannot stand her ground.<lb />
George Huff blew away the competition. I completely agree with Randy's<lb />
comment: Huff is "the best male performer this competition has seen<lb />
Lisa Wilson's performance was atrocious. It was painful for me to listen to<lb />
her arrangement ot "Come to My Window" as she screamed each note.<lb />
My picks for the next round are, without a doubt, George Huff and John<lb />
Stevens.<lb />

The only part of last nights competition that could even be considered good<lb />
entertainment was when Simon ('owell told Ryan Seai rest if he had any talent, he<lb />

In terms of singing, last night's contestants left little to be desired my only<lb />
desire is that next week will include singers that can actually carry a tune. Week<lb />
four's best contestants made me cringe. Watching "American Idol" actually felt like a<lb />
chore, and I couldn't wait until it was over for thee contestants sake and mine.<lb />
However, the competition must goon. The most tolerable two of the night were<lb />

Wiley is such an Incredible ath-<lb />

his quickness and how high he<lb />
could jump. Wiley will probably<lb />
be remembered lor his infamous<lb />
"teabag"dunk last season against<lb />
Marquette where he caught an<lb />

Gabriel Mikulas<lb />
6'H Forward,<lb />
Cordoba, Argentina<lb />
"Ciahe When that name<lb />
was said on this campus, every-<lb />
one knew who you were talking<lb />
about. Gabriel Mikulas' season<lb />
and career ended early due to a<lb />
broken arm halfway through this<lb />
season. He also sat out about 10<lb />
games his sophomore year due<lb />
to NCAA suspension for play-<lb />
ing professionally overseas.<lb />
Despite these two things, he<lb />
will still graduate as the leading<lb />
free throw shooter in school his-<lb />
tory. When Mikulas was on the<lb />
tree throw line, the scorer should<lb />
have just put two points on the<lb />
board and saved some time<lb />
- he was just that automatic.<lb />
Mikulas made all the<lb />
defenders in Conference USA<lb />
look silly as they constantly fell<lb />
lor his head fake. Mikulas has<lb />
no weak hand, he made shots<lb />
right-handed and left-handed<lb />
his entire career. It's been hard<lb />
seeing him in a cast and sweats<lb />
for half the season - it couldn't<lb />
have happened to a nicer or better<lb />
player. Mikulas scored more than<lb />
1,000 points asa Pirate, mot of<lb />
them from the charity stripe.<lb />
1 will miss seeing his<lb />
grace on the court. He was<lb />
Erroyl Bing is one of five seniors leaving the team this season.<lb />
smooth and handled the ball<lb />
well for a big man. I have no<lb />
doubt he will recover from<lb />
this injury and be a success-<lb />
ful professional in Argentina.<lb />
Erroyl Bing<lb />
6'7 Forward,<lb />
Largo, Florida<lb />
No player for ECU shows<lb />
more emotion or leadership than<lb />
Krroyl King. King also was a beast<lb />
on the boards. In a double over-<lb />
time game last year with South<lb />
Florida, King pulled down over<lb />
20 rebounds. He is the school's<lb />
second all time rebounder and<lb />
is also a 1,000 plus scorer. Bing<lb />
led the team on and ott the floor<lb />
game in and game out this year.<lb />
He accepted his role as the sixth<lb />
in;yi of tb team at the beginning<lb />
of the sear, tame off the bench<lb />
and played hard.<lb />
I cannot emphasize how<lb />
Important his leadership has<lb />
been over the years, especially<lb />
this year. H.U has a young back-<lb />
court, and he was always talking<lb />
to and encouraging them A true<lb />
team player, King will he remem-<lb />
bered lor that big smile of his.<lb />
I sometimes felt that if( oach<lb />
Herrion asked Bing to do the<lb />
team's laundry, he would just<lb />
because Herrion asked him to.<lb />
Any team in America would he<lb />
privileged to base him on their<lb />
roster. I will miss King's emo-<lb />

It's finally here: March<lb />
Madness. Whether it was an<lb />

troversial call or a powei outage<lb />
(Clemson vs. (ill, this sear's col-<lb />
lege basketball season has given<lb />
its fans everything, except for a<lb />
team to heat.<lb />
Several teams have shared<lb />
the spotlight al the lop ol the<lb />
polls this season with no one's<lb />
reign lasting long. Stanford now<lb />
sils alop of the polls, a position<lb />
many thought they should have<lb />
had way earlier in the season. Si.<lb />
joe's, Duke, Gonzaga and Missis<lb />
sippi State follow closely behind<lb />
the Cardinals for the season-<lb />
ending i.n efoi number one. Will<lb />
any of these teams make noise late<lb />
in March I lere's a little informa-<lb />
tion that might help you decide<lb />
lor yourself:<lb />
1. Stanford Cardinals - Con-<lb />
tender: Stanford has proven time<lb />
and time again this season that<lb />
they can continue to win ball-<lb />
games and win them in convinc-<lb />
ing fashion. The Cardinals have<lb />
had only a lew close calls this<lb />
season, the most recent coming<lb />
at home against Arizona.<lb />
With I he game lied and seven<lb />
seconds remaining, the Stanford<lb />
defense came up will; a steal,<lb />
which tell in the hands of Nick<lb />
Robinson and the rest was history<lb />
from 40 teet. The Cardinals look<lb />
great in the win column and on<lb />
paper, but the factor that may<lb />
stand out the most in this year's<lb />
incredible run is their strength ol<lb />
schedule, 91.<lb />
The Pac-10 Conference is<lb />
definitely not as strong as in years<lb />
past and may only see three teams<lb />
squeak into this year's N( AA tour-<lb />
nament. Though the 91 SOS may<lb />
be a little misleading, their 4 spot<lb />
in the Rll is not and the Cardinals<lb />
looked poised for a title run and<lb />
possibly an undefeated regular<lb />
season as well as postseason.<lb />
2. Saint Joseph's Hawks<lb />
- close one, hut I say Pretender:<lb />
The Hawks' 26-0 start to the<lb />
season may seem to Mime tans<lb />
to be the most surprising thing<lb />
to happen in college basketball<lb />
this year. However, a reminder to<lb />
those fans who think this is such<lb />
a big surprise-they have no com-<lb />
petition in conference play, i his is<lb />
the Atlantic to, a conference that<lb />
collectively has just four wins<lb />
against the AP top 25.<lb />
Realistically speaking, at least<lb />
10 teams in the AP top 25 could<lb />
possibly go undefeated with the<lb />
Hawks' schedule, which only<lb />
featured one AP top 25 team in<lb />
the (ionaga Bulldogs. However,<lb />
taking nothing away Irom the<lb />
Hawks, they have won all their<lb />
games so far on this respective<lb />
season, a feat that is rarely accom-<lb />
plished by any learn no matter the<lb />
schedule or conference.<lb />
St. Joe's has ridden on the<lb />
wings ol guards Jameer Nelson<lb />
and Delonte West the entire<lb />
season thus la rand look to do the<lb />
same late in March. Mans people-<lb />
have questioned the I lawks' abil-<lb />
ity to guard the opposition due to<lb />
their common four-guard lineup<lb />
used throughout much ol the<lb />
season. However,Head(loach Phil<lb />
Marlelli, confident In his lineups<lb />
on the court, always responds In<lb />
simply saying "How is the opposi-<lb />
tion going to guard us<lb />
3. Duke Klue Devils<lb />
- Contendei: Here is a more<lb />
familiar name at the top ol the<lb />
polls. The Duke Klue Dei ils have<lb />
consistently been alop the polls<lb />
for the last several years now,<lb />

a K 11 ol seven, the Vags look like<lb />
the) ari- 111 great position to grab<lb />
that number one seed. Not so<lb />
last, though.<lb />
Gonzaga's SOS is the 68th<lb />
toughest in the nation, nothing<lb />
to boast ocrr. Also, the Bulldogs<lb />
still have wt to win the "big<lb />
one" this season I hev had their<lb />
ih.iiurs against the two unde-<lb />
feated teams and tailed in both<lb />
contests. Their most impressive<lb />
wins 1.mic against two bubble<lb />
trams. Missouri and Maryland.<lb />
( onie sclei tlon Sunday, the<lb />
Gonzaga Bulldogs may very well<lb />
get slighted again due to their key<lb />
wins and key losses. Their 2S-2<lb />
record may look intimidating to<lb />
some, but to others, it shows noth-<lb />
ing because of the quality of the<lb />
teams faced in conference as well<lb />
as out of conference.<lb />
S. Mississippi State Bull-<lb />
dogs - another tough one,<lb />
Contender: The selection com-<lb />
mittee come selection Sunday<lb />
may see things they way I see<lb />
them: There is only room for one<lb />
dog in the number one seeding<lb />
process. That lone dog might<lb />
very well be the Mississippi State<lb />
Bulldogs.<lb />
A controversial loss to the Ken-<lb />
tucky Wildcats midway through<lb />
the season dashed any hopes of<lb />
tfie 'Dogs being the third team to<lb />
run the regular season table, but<lb />
that hasn't stopped them from<lb />
making their way to the top of<lb />
the polls. Mississippi State is<lb />
definitely the road warrior team<lb />
of the college basketball season,<lb />
having not dropped a single game<lb />
on the road the entire year.<lb />
With an RPI of five and a<lb />
record of 23-2, the Bulldogs are<lb />
definitely proving their case to<lb />
grab the last number one seed for<lb />
the tourney. If not for a recent loss<lb />
to Alabama, Mississippi State may<lb />
already have sealed the coveted<lb />
top seed.<lb />
They will have their chance,<lb />
however, to prove to the com-<lb />
mittee that the home loss to the<lb />
Crimson Tide was just a fluke as<lb />
their last contest on the season is<lb />
in Alabama. It is simple for the<lb />
Bulldogs - win the SEC tourney,<lb />
gel a number one seed.<lb />
learns play all year to get to<lb />
the NCAA tourney. No matter<lb />
how they get there or how hot or<lb />
cold they may be coming into the<lb />
dance, each team has to start over<lb />
with a new season consisting of<lb />
six games, or however many they<lb />
win before they lose and are elimi-<lb />
nated. A record of 28-0 or 30-0<lb />
in the regular season is a great<lb />
accomplishment, but will not get<lb />
a team a national title.<lb />
The NCAA tournament isn't<lb />
only a new season of games, but<lb />
a new season of emotions.<lb />
This season is none other than<lb />
March Madness. Just six wins in<lb />
a matter of two weeks and bang,<lb />
national champions. Who is<lb />
going to be the team that has<lb />
that heartfelt, outstanding,<lb />
momentum filled, six-game run<lb />
to the title? My seat is out on a<lb />
limb, right leside a Husky. A U-<lb />

The ECU women's club<lb />

rival Duke.<lb />
The club is new to ECU this<lb />
year, but you couldn't tell by the<lb />
number of girls in uniform and the<lb />
amount of fans in attendance.<lb />
The women ran up and down<lb />
the field, keeping up with Duke,<lb />
but fell 9-1. The lone goal came<lb />
right at the end of regulation by<lb />
freshman Katie Talbot.<lb />
She scooped up the ball and<lb />
fired it past the Duke goaltender<lb />
to end the shutout.<lb />
The Pi rates netted a lot of shots<lb />
on goal hut just couldn't get it past<lb />
the goalie, who recorded save after<lb />
save.<lb />
Despite the loss, junior Alexis<lb />
Watson was happy with the WB)<lb />
her team played.<lb />
"We did really well. We<lb />
played awesome defense said<lb />
Watson.<lb />
The Pirates put junior Kim<lb />

Duke was able to put a lot<lb />
of shots on net, but the Pirate<lb />
defenders and the play of Lafem-<lb />

attack down.<lb />
The team was led on lo the<lb />
