Board chairman<lb/>
asks for delay in<lb/>
vote on tuition<lb/>
RALEIGII (Al') ? The decision to delay a vote<lb/>
on proposed tuition increases tor the University<lb/>
of North Carolina system doesn't make sense to<lb/>
Jonathan Ducote, the lone student on the UNC<lb/>
board of governors.<lb/>
"All you're doing now is making it harder for<lb/>
students and families to plan their expenses said<lb/>
Ducote, who opposes the increases.<lb/>
"We're setting people up for harder times<lb/>
without any guarantee they'll be provided a<lb/>
better education next year<lb/>
Board of Governors Chairman Brad Wilson<lb/>
on Tuesday sent a letter to the board's budget<lb/>
committee, asking that final recommendations<lb/>
on the tuition increases be tabled from Thursday<lb/>
until March. The full board was scheduled to take<lb/>
up the issue Friday.<lb/>
Wilson said requests from university officials<lb/>
for more information during a meeting last week<lb/>
convinced him more time was necessary.<lb/>
"Given the importance of this issue, we must<lb/>
take action only after we have reviewed and con-<lb/>
sidered all relevant information Wilson said in<lb/>
the letter.<lb/>
"I have become convinced that this would be<lb/>
nearly impossible by the day after tomorrow<lb/>
The budget committee was expected to discuss<lb/>
proposed campus-based tuition increases for the<lb/>
16-campus system for the 2004-05 academic year.<lb/>
The hikes would range from 11 percent at NC State<lb/>
University to 23 percent at the North Carolina<lb/>
School of the Arts.<lb/>
Some schools have recommended bigger<lb/>
increases for out-of-state and graduate students.<lb/>
Ciov. Mike Kasley over the weekend sent a<lb/>
letter to Wilson asking the board to vote against<lb/>
campus-based tuition increases.<lb/>
Easley said raising tuition would hurt access<lb/>
to higher education in the state.<lb/>
Peter Hans, a board member from Raleigh,<lb/>
thinks the delay is a good idea.<lb/>
Hans said he wants more information from<lb/>
campuses to help him determine whether fac-<lb/>
ulty retention and recruitment issues are serious<lb/>
enough to warrant higher tuition.<lb/>
"The board needs to decide if tuition can be<lb/>
raised without hindering access to higher educa-<lb/>
tion he said.<lb/>
"Secondly, if the board does raise tuition, will<lb/>
the funds be spent to enhance the classroom?<lb/>
"If the university system can demonstrate its<lb/>
needs and how it will significantly improve the<lb/>
students'educational experience, then we'll have<lb/>
the credibility to make this decision<lb/>
Ducote, a senior at NC State, said he doesn't<lb/>
see the point in delaying the vote because cam-<lb/>
puses that don't have valid reasons for raising<lb/>
tuition won't have better reasons a month.<lb/>

West End Dining Hall's<lb/>
opening will bring<lb/>
change to campus<lb/>
LUKE SPENCER<lb/>
STAFF WRITER<lb/>
Construction on the future-<lb/>
West F.nd Dining Hall has been<lb/>
underway for more than a semes-<lb/>
ter and is scheduled lor comple-<lb/>
tion in September. But this new<lb/>
addition begs a question: What<lb/>
will be done with the space<lb/>
occupied by the existing caf-<lb/>
eteria in Mendenhall Student<lb/>
Center?<lb/>
"Currently, there are no<lb/>
major long-term plans, but we<lb/>
have hired a firm to study how<lb/>
the space should be used said<lb/>
George llarrell, Ph.D senior<lb/>
associate vice chancellor for<lb/>
campus operations.<lb/>
"This study should take no<lb/>
more than six months and will<lb/>
significantly involve students<lb/>
Though there are no definite<lb/>
plans, ideas are under consider-<lb/>
ation.<lb/>
Suggestions include the<lb/>
installation of a mall-type food<lb/>
court in the serving area of the<lb/>
current cafeteria that could<lb/>
feature national chains such as<lb/>
Chic-fil-A.<lb/>
Also under discussion is<lb/>
the construction of a quality<lb/>
sit-down style restaurant in a<lb/>
Students and faculty will soon see one of three proposed plans for the space Mendenhall cafeteria now seals<lb/>
portion of the current seating<lb/>
area that would be run in part<lb/>
by hospitality management<lb/>
students, to give them practical<lb/>
experience in restaurant manage-<lb/>
ment.<lb/>
However, due to the cost and<lb/>
time needed for construction,<lb/>
this section would probably not<lb/>
open until fall of 2006.<lb/>
Possibly the most drastic<lb/>
change proposed is the construc-<lb/>
tion of a stage area with sound<lb/>
and lighting equipment that<lb/>
could be used for late night pro-<lb/>
gramming in the style of Pirate<lb/>
Underground.<lb/>
"We're excited about the<lb/>
ideas that we are currently<lb/>
studying for Mendenhall Stu-<lb/>
dent Center because we think<lb/>
they will provide a more enjoy-<lb/>
able experience for students, as<lb/>
well as meeting the demands of<lb/>
a growing university said Bill<lb/>
Clutter, assistant vice chancel-<lb/>
lor for student life.<lb/>
Even with the coming<lb/>
changes, some parts of<lb/>
Mendenhall will remain the<lb/>
same or be slightly modified.<lb/>
The Spot will continue normal<lb/>
operation, although there is a<lb/>
possibility of expansion.<lb/>
The convenience store will<lb/>
remain operational, but the hot<lb/>
food service area of the Spot will<lb/>
move into the food court.<lb/>
No modifications are in dis-<lb/>
cussion tor the non-food related<lb/>
areas of MSC.<lb/>
"I think the changes are a<lb/>
hot idea said Aaron Holmes,<lb/>
junior physical fitness and activ-<lb/>
ity major.<lb/>
"It'll be great to have some<lb/>
better food selections on West<lb/>

Report: Education, recruitment<lb/>
funds key to expanding NC<lb/>
biotech<lb/>
RALEIGH (AP) - North Carolina must<lb/>
increase funding for community<lb/>
colleges and industrial recruitment<lb/>
to expand the states biotechnology<lb/>
work force and capitalize on a<lb/>
fast-growing industry, according to a<lb/>
report released Wednesday<lb/>
A panel led by former Govs. Jim<lb/>
Hunt and Jim Martin presented<lb/>
the eight-month study and its<lb/>
54 recommendations to Gov. Mike<lb/>
Easley<lb/>
While North Carolina is among the<lb/>
top five states in the biotechnology<lb/>
industry, the work force needs to<lb/>
grow several times over in the next 20<lb/>
years to help narrow the gap with<lb/>
losses in traditional manufacturing<lb/>
in the slate, the report s authors said.<lb/>
More than 150 biotechnology<lb/>
companies currently call North<lb/>
Carolina home, creating 18,500<lb/>
jobs and $3 billion in sales, the<lb/>
report said.<lb/>
The jobs, however, are about<lb/>
equal to the number of textile and<lb/>
furniture positions lost during 2003<lb/>
alone, according to employment<lb/>
figures. More broad layoffs could be<lb/>
ahead as quotas on Chinese textile<lb/>
products are set to be lifted by the<lb/>
end of this year<lb/>

LAURINBURG (AP) - Eight people<lb/>
were injured, one critically, in a fire<lb/>
Wednesday at a nursing home that<lb/>
was the scene of a fatal fire eight<lb/>
years ago<lb/>
Scotland County deputies said 41<lb/>
residents were evacuated from<lb/>
Aberdeen Meadows after the fire<lb/>
began in an unoccupied room about<lb/>
3:20 am The fire was contained in<lb/>
the one bedroom, but smoke spread<lb/>
throughout the building<lb/>
Eight patients were treated and<lb/>
one admitted to the critical care<lb/>
unit at Scotland Memorial Hospital.<lb/>
said hospital spokeswoman Melisa<lb/>
Ciarrocca<lb/>
A fire killed eight people at the<lb/>
same location March 17, 1996,<lb/>
when the nursing home was called<lb/>
Scotch Meadows At the time, it was<lb/>
the deadliest nursing home fire in<lb/>
North Carolina history<lb/>
Ciarrocca said Meadow Homes,<lb/>
owner of Aberdeen Meadows, found<lb/>
other places for the patients and that<lb/>
most were taken to another home<lb/>
owned by the company.<lb/>
The cause of the fire is still under<lb/>

White House releases Bush's<lb/>
military pay records; spokesman<lb/>
says he fulfilled his duties<lb/>
WASHINGTON (AP) - The White House<lb/>
has provided documentary evidence<lb/>
that President Bush completed his<lb/>
National Guard service during the<lb/>
Vietnam War. but Democrats are still<lb/>
demanding prool he reported for duty<lb/>
as ordered in Alabama<lb/>
"The president recalls serving both<lb/>
when he was in Texas and when<lb/>
he was in Alabama White House<lb/>
spokesman Scott McClellan said<lb/>
Tuesday, holding up a 13-page<lb/>
packet of military records<lb/>
"We have provided you these<lb/>
documents that show clearly that<lb/>
the president of the United States<lb/>

The records, some being released for<lb/>
the first time, didn't satisfy Democratic<lb/>

posed more questions than they<lb/>
answered.<lb/>

Racing to find radioactive material,<lb/>
Chinese authorities warn thieves:<lb/>
Don't open It<lb/>
SHANGHAI. China (AP) - Authorities<lb/>
are racing to find a canister of<lb/>
potentially deadly radioactive<lb/>
material stolen from a northern China<lb/>
construction site and are urging<lb/>
those who took the material not to<lb/>
risk radiation poisoning by opening<lb/>
it, officials said Wednesday.<lb/>
The football-sized lead container of<lb/>
cesium-137 was taken from a power<lb/>
plant construction site in Pucheng, a<lb/>
county in northern China's Shaanxi<lb/>
province, about five days ago,<lb/>
according to a county government<lb/>
official, who refused to give his name<lb/>
He would not provide further details.<lb/>
A report in the state-run newspaper<lb/>
China Daily said police believe the<lb/>
canister was mistaken for scrap<lb/>
metal-a material often stolen for<lb/>
sale to salvage companies<lb/>
Cesium-137, a highly radioactive<lb/>
material, is used in soil-testing<lb/>
gauges in construction and is found<lb/>
in photoelectric batteries and vacuum<lb/>
valves. It explodes if it comes into<lb/>
contact with water, and exposure<lb/>
can cause blood diseases, sterility<lb/>

Sea lion found on California road<lb/>
LOS BANOS, Calif. (AP) - A sea lion<lb/>
that apparently swam upriver from<lb/>
the ocean into the inland canals<lb/>
of central California was captured<lb/>
Monday after motorists spotted it<lb/>
flopping along the roadway. 100<lb/>
kilometers from the sea.<lb/>
The 135-kilogram animal, first<lb/>
reported Monday morning, basked<lb/>
in the sun on the back of a highway<lb/>
patrol cruiser while officers waited for<lb/>
a marine rescue team to tetch him.<lb/>
The adult male was expected to be<lb/>
held several days for observation<lb/>
before being released into the<lb/>
ocean, said Cynthia Schramm, a<lb/>
spokeswoman for the Sausalito-<lb/>
based Marine Mammal Center.<lb/>
"We don't think anyone grabbed<lb/>
him. We just think he went all the<lb/>
way through the San Joaquin River,<lb/>
into some canals, and probably got<lb/>
out and started wandering around<lb/>
Schramm said.<lb/>

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP)<lb/>
- A man who shipped himself in<lb/>
an airline cargo crate from New<lb/>
York to Dallas because he was<lb/>
homesick and<lb/>
didn't want to pay for a plane ticket<lb/>
was fined $1,500 Wednesday and<lb/>
placed on probation for a year.<lb/>
Charles D McKinley was also<lb/>
sentenced to four months under<lb/>

McKinley, a 25-year-old<lb/>
shipping clerk at a New York<lb/>

November to stowing away on a<lb/>

year in prison and a $100,000 fine He<lb/>
had no comment Wednesday.<lb/>
The fine was far more than what it<lb/>

OSLO, Norway (AP) - A Norwegian<lb/>

to pay a 30.000 kroner ($4,285 US)<lb/>

($42,850 US) in revenues from the<lb/>
advertisements.<lb/>
In its nine-page ruling, the court<lb/>
said even though some advertising<lb/>

Our View<lb/>
No matter<lb/>
what you<lb/>
choose to<lb/>
do Saturday,<lb/>
just remem-<lb/>
ber that<lb/>
Valentine's<lb/>
Day is what<lb/>
you choose to<lb/>
make it.<lb/>
Common complaints about Valentine's Day are<lb/>
that the holiday has gotten "too commercial" or<lb/>
that it secludes singles.<lb/>
However, the real problem with the holiday<lb/>
doesn't lie in the sappy romance of typical<lb/>
greeting-card holidays - the problem with<lb/>
Valentine's Day is that it causes people to be<lb/>
downright uncreative.<lb/>
Every year, couples make plans for ridicu-<lb/>
lously expensive dinners, only to be added to<lb/>
the cost of a dozen roses or a box of gourmet<lb/>
chocolates. Not only are these gifts trivial and<lb/>
redundant, they are completely unnecessary.<lb/>
Attempting to express your love to someone<lb/>
through such contrived gifts not only shows<lb/>
a lack of originality but also a lack of consid-<lb/>
eration.<lb/>
Before you rush to the hearts' and teddy bears'<lb/>
aisle at Wal-Mart this Valentine's Day, take a<lb/>
minute to examine what is so special about<lb/>
your relationship with your significant other.<lb/>
Use this information to give a meaningful gift<lb/>
or plan a special date - something different<lb/>
than the norm.<lb/>
Quit wasting your money trying to outdo the<lb/>
monetary value of your boyfriend or girlfriend's<lb/>
gift. Since when did feelings of love become<lb/>
expressed in dollars and cents? Love comes<lb/>
from the heart and can only be expressed from<lb/>
the heart - not the wallet.<lb/>
Singles are also guilty of committing the Val-<lb/>
entine's Day crime of unoriginality. Every year,<lb/>
singles across the nation sit around and mope<lb/>
simply because they happen to be lacking in<lb/>
the romance department.<lb/>
Despite what Hallmark says, Valentine's Day<lb/>
doesn't have to be a holiday dedicated only to<lb/>
the love of your life. Instead of the usual whining,<lb/>
share the day with your friends and family - if<lb/>
they happen to be unavailable, be greedy and<lb/>
do something nice for yourself.<lb/>
No matter what you choose to do Saturday,<lb/>
just remember that Valentine's Day is what<lb/>
you choose to make it. And if you happen to<lb/>
be alone on this particular day, there are 364<lb/>
other days in the year for you to freely declare<lb/>
your love to someone.<lb/>

Letters to the Editor In My Opinion<lb/>
Dear Editor,<lb/>
I am an alumni, class of 83.<lb/>
While on campus yesterday, I<lb/>
picked up the paper and read the<lb/>
"opinion" page.<lb/>
It was interesting.<lb/>
However I was offended by<lb/>
the comments made concerning<lb/>
the Iraq war.<lb/>
Don't misunderstand. I'm<lb/>
not offended by the exercise of<lb/>
free speech, but rather by the<lb/>
lack of thought that went into<lb/>
the piece. <lb/>
The whole thing sounded<lb/>
like a blurb from an a.m. "talk<lb/>
radio" show.<lb/>
Over 500 American men and<lb/>
women have died. The number is<lb/>
growing. Over $120 billion have<lb/>
been spent.<lb/>
The number is growing. The<lb/>
entire region has been destabi-<lb/>
lized. The number of people<lb/>
who hate America is growing.<lb/>
We are not safer.<lb/>
You boys and girls do not<lb/>
serve in the military. You don't<lb/>
have to kill other human beings<lb/>
or risk being killed yourself.<lb/>
You get to go to college on<lb/>
your parents dime. Use the time<lb/>
wisely.<lb/>
Understand what it means<lb/>
to be lied to by the government<lb/>
and why it is so dangerous. A<lb/>
free press is a powerful tool.<lb/>
Use it wisely.<lb/>
Peter Susi<lb/>
ECU Alumnus, '83<lb/>
Dear Editor,<lb/>
Rarely have I seen an article<lb/>
so full of propaganda, mis-<lb/>
conceptions, falsehoods and a<lb/>
lack of understanding of basic<lb/>
government function.<lb/>
Mr. Bream states that "Because<lb/>
of Christian conservatives in the<lb/>
state legislature" there has been<lb/>
no referendum on the lottery yet<lb/>
and that the people should be<lb/>
given a chance to vote. There are<lb/>
three glaring errors here.<lb/>
One, the lottery is opposed in<lb/>
the legislature by Christian liber-<lb/>
als non-Christian conservatives<lb/>
and liberals, as well as a broad<lb/>
coalition of people, Christian<lb/>
and non-Christian, conservative,<lb/>
liberal, independent, undecided,<lb/>
whatever, outside the legislature.<lb/>
Pulling out the old whipping<lb/>
boy "Christian conservative" is<lb/>
a tired ploy that has no basis in<lb/>
reality here.<lb/>
Dear Editor,<lb/>
I am writing you to express my<lb/>
disgust at the front page of your<lb/>
Feb. 3rd issue entitled, "I lonoring<lb/>
African-American History<lb/>
I am deeply offfended that<lb/>
you obviously believe that the<lb/>
way to honor African-American's<lb/>
history is with caricatures.<lb/>
In my view it sends a clear<lb/>
message that we really don't honor<lb/>
it at all. Caricatures arc reserved<lb/>
for portraying a message of light-<lb/>
heartedness, humor or things you<lb/>
want to make fun of.<lb/>
I challenge you to give me<lb/>
example of when it is used any<lb/>
other way.<lb/>
As an African-American,<lb/>
I don't find my history to be a<lb/>
v<lb/>
matter of light-hearted humor,<lb/>
especially not in America.<lb/>
I really think the artwork is<lb/>
great, but not suited for honor-<lb/>
ing the history of a people.<lb/>
After seeing the front page,<lb/>
this was the first time i didn't<lb/>
even want to read the paper.<lb/>
However, I did look through<lb/>
the paper to see if I had judged<lb/>
prematurely. I don't believe I<lb/>
have. Your caricature of Jay-Z<lb/>
even seemed appropriate.<lb/>
As the editor, 1 wished that<lb/>
you would have not allowed this<lb/>
to happened.<lb/>
David llolloway<lb/>

Johnny Depp, Actor<lb/>
Be romantic year-round<lb/>
Two, the North Carolina<lb/>
Constitution does not allow<lb/>
referendums. This is a fact of<lb/>
life as well as law.<lb/>
Three, the people of this<lb/>
state have made it perfectly clear<lb/>
that they want a lottery.<lb/>
What is standing in the<lb/>
way is not some shadowy<lb/>
block of "Christian conserva-<lb/>
tives but the current crowd of<lb/>
elected politicians in Raleigh,<lb/>
democrat and republican, who<lb/>
do not have the backbone to<lb/>
vote as the people are telling<lb/>
them to.<lb/>
So, instead of advocating<lb/>
nothing less than rewriting the<lb/>
State Constitution as Mr. Bream<lb/>
desires, elect politicians that will<lb/>
do what the people want.<lb/>
Anthony McKee<lb/>
ECU Student<lb/>
TONY ZOPPO<lb/>
ASSISTANT SPORTS EDITOR<lb/>
As many of you that there<lb/>
may be that disagree with<lb/>
me, Valentine's Day should<lb/>
not really be recognized as<lb/>
some special kind of romance<lb/>
holiday. It's flat out silly and<lb/>
pointless. A good man tells his<lb/>
woman how much he loves her<lb/>
every day of the week ? and<lb/>
more than just once a day.<lb/>
I know it's hard for most<lb/>
men to be creative when treat-<lb/>
ing their ladies, but the prob-<lb/>
lem that lies within most guys<lb/>
is that they never listen.<lb/>
If you know your lady, what<lb/>
makes her happy and things she<lb/>
appreciates most, it's not hard<lb/>
to surprise her and make her<lb/>
feel like a queen. Not to men-<lb/>
tion that all women are hard<lb/>
wired to love flowers ? c'mon<lb/>
ladies, you can't argue that.<lb/>
Feb. 14 shouldn't have to be<lb/>
a special day where couples tell<lb/>
one another how much they're<lb/>
in love, it should be known and<lb/>
said by both everyday.<lb/>
And since the main point<lb/>
of V-Day is to surprise your<lb/>
loved one, and females seem to<lb/>
have very little problem doing<lb/>
that for men (that or we're<lb/>
just really simple creatures),<lb/>
here's a few tips for you 'fellas<lb/>
out there.<lb/>
Tell her you love her as<lb/>
often as you breathe. There<lb/>
should rarely be a moment<lb/>
when she doubts how you<lb/>
feel.<lb/>
Call her unexpectedly, no<lb/>
matter where she is, unless<lb/>
she'll get in trouble if you call<lb/>
her at work. Even then, risk it<lb/>
every so often to sneak In a<lb/>
quick, "1 love you and I miss<lb/>
you It'll make a potential sour<lb/>
day for her shoot through the<lb/>
roof.<lb/>
Always, always bring her<lb/>
roses whenever the chance<lb/>
presents itself. Especially if it's<lb/>
the end of a long day or you<lb/>
have a chance to leave them<lb/>
in her car when she gets out<lb/>
of work.<lb/>
When she walks through<lb/>
the door with a smile on her<lb/>
face like the one she'll most<lb/>
definitely have on, it'll put you<lb/>
and her in the best mood you<lb/>
could ask for.<lb/>
Candlelight dinners. Either<lb/>
completely surprise her or make<lb/>
sure she has time one night for<lb/>
"something" without telling<lb/>
her what.<lb/>
Cook a good meal, prefer-<lb/>
ably pasta and salad (easy and<lb/>
tasty if cooked right) and when<lb/>
she gets back from work, don't<lb/>
let her see anything.<lb/>
Have a hot bubble bath wait-<lb/>
ing for her and let her relax until<lb/>
you're done cooking.<lb/>
Put something debonair on,<lb/>
get the dinner out on the table<lb/>
with maybe a red tablecloth,<lb/>
flowers, candlelight and relax-<lb/>
ing music.<lb/>
Make the night all hers in<lb/>
every way you can think of. It<lb/>
doesn't take a night in February<lb/>
to do that, you should want to<lb/>
do that for her more than once<lb/>
a year.<lb/>
Now of course, she will<lb/>
appreciate these things with<lb/>
everything she's got, if you<lb/>
two truly have something, she<lb/>
will respond in ways that will<lb/>
definitely be more than enough<lb/>
reciprocation.<lb/>
When she wears that beauti-<lb/>
ful smile and shows how excited<lb/>
she is along with a huge kiss,<lb/>
that's enough in return.<lb/>
All in all folks, guy or gal,<lb/>
you can tell your loved one how<lb/>
much you care for them and<lb/>
love them everyday without it<lb/>
being called Valentine's day.<lb/>
Do so more often. Appreciate<lb/>
the ones you love. If anything<lb/>
matters in life, it's the feelings<lb/>
shared between two people who<lb/>
love each other. Those feelings<lb/>
last much longer than just one<lb/>
Saturday.<lb/>
In My Opinion<lb/>
Washington should hear this WHO<lb/>
(KRT) ? Imagine the good<lb/>
advice your grandmother might<lb/>
give you about how to stay trim<lb/>
and fit: Cut way back on extra<lb/>
sugar, don't overdo it on fats,<lb/>
exercise.<lb/>
One could hardly argue with<lb/>
such sage recommendations. But<lb/>
the Bush administration is.<lb/>
In a stance that has caused<lb/>
an international flap, the White<lb/>
House - via the U.S. Department<lb/>
of Health and Human Services<lb/>
- is opposing common-sense<lb/>
international dietary guidelines<lb/>
proposed by the World Health<lb/>
Organization.<lb/>
The strictly voluntary guide-<lb/>
lines aim to confront a worldwide<lb/>
"globosity" epidemic blamed for<lb/>
millions of deaths.<lb/>
Infection, war and starvation<lb/>
used to claim most human lives.<lb/>
But now, says the WHO, non-<lb/>
communicable diseases related to<lb/>
lifestyle are the grimmest reapers<lb/>
- accounting for almost 60 ercent<lb/>
of the world's 56.5 million deaths<lb/>
In 2001.<lb/>
The WHO largely blames<lb/>
"malnutrition, both of deficiency<lb/>
and excess In other words, people<lb/>
are getting sicker even as they eat<lb/>
more - especially if it's food high in<lb/>
calories and low in nutrition.<lb/>
Smart conclusion.<lb/>
But the Bush administration<lb/>
has found myriad ways to criticize,<lb/>
wrongly, both the proposed new<lb/>
global strategy and the research<lb/>
underpinning it.<lb/>
There's no proof, said the<lb/>
Department of I lealth and I luman<lb/>
Services in a letter to the WHO,<lb/>
that high-fat, high-sugar foods<lb/>
are linked to obesity and chronic<lb/>
ailments such as heart disease.<lb/>
There's also no proof, it said, that<lb/>
childhood obesity is influenced by<lb/>
TV marketing.<lb/>
Imagine your grandmother<lb/>
rolling her eyes at those state-<lb/>
ments.<lb/>
The Bush administration<lb/>
wants the WHO to say more about<lb/>
"personal responsibility" when it<lb/>
comes to nutrition choices.<lb/>
Fine. Everyone can, to be sure,<lb/>
choose a salad instead of a burger.<lb/>
But who should bear "personal<lb/>
responsibility" for ad campaigns<lb/>
that push sweets and junk food<lb/>
- food marketers or children who<lb/>
succumb to the ads?<lb/>

Landowner protests for<lb/>
apartments on floodplain<lb/>
Carroll files rezoning<lb/>
petition with Greenville<lb/>
City Council members<lb/>
AORIANNA DRAKE<lb/>
SI API- WRITER<lb/>
landowner Phillip Car-<lb/>
roll has requested to build<lb/>
apartments in a known Greenville<lb/>
lloodplain with hopes of offering<lb/>
the growing number of ECU stu-<lb/>
dents a place to live.<lb/>
His pianschallenge the Green-<lb/>
ville City Council's Comprchen-<lb/>
sive I'lan and I and Use Plan Map<lb/>
passed In March 2000. The orders<lb/>
deny any landowner access to<lb/>
build home dwellings in the 100<lb/>
year and 500 year floodplains.<lb/>
the plan was put into place<lb/>
after I lurricanc Floyd caused mas-<lb/>
sive damage in 1999. If Carroll's<lb/>
bid succeeds, he can build an esti-<lb/>
mated 4S5 apartments for almost<lb/>
1,550 residents.<lb/>
In September. Carroll submit-<lb/>
ted a proposal to build the apart-<lb/>
ments in the Tit River floodplain<lb/>
off of Highway 264 Bypass on<lb/>
Whichard Road.<lb/>
Phillip Dixon Sr the attor-<lb/>
ney hired by Carroll, said Carroll<lb/>
asked the Council to agree to a<lb/>
small modilication in the newly<lb/>
:4opted plan so he could build.<lb/>
Dixon said there is only a 1.3<lb/>
foot difference between an apart-<lb/>
ment flooding or not, and even<lb/>
then not much would happen.<lb/>
The Comprehensive Plan does<lb/>
not allow residential buildings<lb/>
that fail to meet certain require-<lb/>
DEVELOPMENT HAN<lb/>
The City Council will make a decision on the apartments<lb/>
Phillip Carroll wants to build at their regular meeting Thursday<lb/>
ments in the floodplain area to<lb/>
avoid any possible disasters in<lb/>
the future.<lb/>
If approved by the City Coun-<lb/>
cil on Thursday, the apartments<lb/>
would lie next to land purchased<lb/>
by the university to build a recre-<lb/>
ation complex.<lb/>
According to Dixon, this<lb/>
would be the best location for<lb/>
apartments. Two major thorough-<lb/>
fares that do not see half as much<lb/>
traffic as they should based on<lb/>
traffic volume estimates around<lb/>
the proposed complex.<lb/>
The planning and rezon-<lb/>
ing commission is a group that<lb/>
hears requests and gives recom-<lb/>
mendations to the City Council.<lb/>
When the planning and rezon-<lb/>
ing commission met on Jan. 20,<lb/>
they voted 7-1 against Carroll's<lb/>
rezoning request. Dixon said the<lb/>
Council is focusing on one pos-<lb/>
sible disaster, when many could<lb/>
occur.<lb/>
"There is a greater likelihood<lb/>
that your apartment will catch<lb/>
fire than flood said Dixon.<lb/>
According to Harry Hamilton,<lb/>
chief city planner, almost half of<lb/>
the land owned by Carroll is<lb/>
out of the county's jurisdiction,<lb/>
which makes the vote more dif-<lb/>
ficult. Due to partial jurisdiction,<lb/>
Carroll has not yet submitted a<lb/>
development plan to the Council<lb/>
and is not required to.<lb/>
Carroll was unavailable for<lb/>
comment on this story.<lb/>
The Greenville City Council is<lb/>
scheduled to meet on Feb. 12 to<lb/>
discuss the rezoning petition.<lb/>

According to the old familiar<lb/>
adage, "The way to a man's heart<lb/>

Perhaps then, a Valentine's<lb/>
Day dinner is the essential<lb/>
romantic holiday experience.<lb/>
And this weekend dining out is<lb/>
sure to be the popular solution<lb/>
for many hungry couples in<lb/>
Greenville.<lb/>
Whether you're celebrating<lb/>
yet another Valentine's Day with<lb/>
your significant other or bravely<lb/>
venturing out on a hopeful first<lb/>
date this Saturday night, you<lb/>
should face no shortage in res-<lb/>
taurant options.<lb/>
Many Greenville eateries will<lb/>
offer dinner specials on Saturday<lb/>
and throughout the weekend.<lb/>
Restaurateurs plan to do what<lb/>
they can to make the occasion<lb/>
a memorable one, as well as a<lb/>
relaxing and stress-free time for<lb/>
dining duos.<lb/>
Mesh Cafe has a package<lb/>
meal available for couples who<lb/>
make Saturday dinner reser-<lb/>
vations. Packages include an<lb/>
appetizer, two dinner entrees,<lb/>
a shared dessert and a bottle of<lb/>
champagne.<lb/>
Although the holiday package<lb/>
price has not yet been set, expect<lb/>
to spend between $50 and $75<lb/>
on dinner for two at Mesh this<lb/>
Saturday.<lb/>
For an elegant finish, as well<lb/>
as a way to work off that three-<lb/>
course meal, Mesh will present<lb/>
a deejay to provide tunes for a<lb/>
night of dancing.<lb/>
City Hotel & Bistro plans a<lb/>
similar evening of dinner and<lb/>
dancing. Dinner reservations<lb/>
are being accepted, and tickets for<lb/>
the after-dinner dance party may<lb/>
also be purchased for couples.<lb/>
As an extra romantic<lb/>
touch, each table will feature<lb/>
chocolate-covered strawberries<lb/>
and a rose.<lb/>
The Plum Tree Bistro<lb/>
in Arlington Village is another<lb/>
upscale dining choice for Valen-<lb/>

Reserved spots are quickly<lb/>
filling up, but if you don't beat<lb/>
the rush and make plans early,<lb/>
you can still enjoy a holiday<lb/>
meal at the Plum Tree. Their<lb/>
special Valentine's menu will<lb/>
actually be available for the<lb/>
entire weekend.<lb/>

that's new to the city of Green-<lb/>

Celebrating more than<lb/>
1,500 years of love<lb/>
USA TUMBARELLO<lb/>
STAFF WRITER<lb/>
We celebrate Valentine's Day<lb/>
with those close to us year after<lb/>
year. We revel in theexcitementof<lb/>
sharing special times filled with<lb/>
love and gifts with significant<lb/>
others, close friends and crushes.<lb/>
But do we really know why this<lb/>
holiday is dedicated to lovers?<lb/>
"I don't know the history of<lb/>
Valentine's Day, but I do know<lb/>
that it's a day to show those<lb/>
you love how much you care<lb/>
about them said l.eanne Teal,<lb/>
sophomore accounting major.<lb/>
Valentine's Day is named<lb/>
after the Roman holy priesl, St.<lb/>
Valentine. Its stories date back<lb/>
to about 270 A.D. No one knows<lb/>
exactly how Valentine's origi-<lb/>
nated, but there are a few theories<lb/>
that hold strong. The version that<lb/>
holds best when investigating<lb/>
the origin of Valentine's begins<lb/>
during the Roman Empire.<lb/>
During the third i entury, the<lb/>
Romans practiced a pagan cele-<lb/>
bration that commemorated the<lb/>
rite of passage of young men. The<lb/>
festival in which this took place<lb/>
featured a matchmaking lottery<lb/>
where the young men would<lb/>
draw names of young ladies out<lb/>
of a jar. The pairs were expected<lb/>
to spend the next year together<lb/>
as companions. After the year<lb/>
had passed, many of the pairs<lb/>
had fallen in love and married.<lb/>
At the same time, the<lb/>
unpopular Emperor Claudius<lb/>
(Claudius the Cruel) began<lb/>
building his army. He said that<lb/>
single men made better fighters<lb/>
than married men. He found that<lb/>
the married men didn't want to<lb/>
leave their loved ones and fami-<lb/>
lies. In order to fix this problem,<lb/>
Claudius cancelled all marriages<lb/>
and banned all engagements.<lb/>
Defying the Emperor, Saint<lb/>
Valentine and his friend Saint<lb/>
Marius defied Claudius and<lb/>
secretly performed marriages<lb/>
for people. Eventually Claudius<lb/>
discovered their actions and St.<lb/>
Valentine was sentenced to be<lb/>
stoned, clubbed and beheaded.<lb/>
While St. Valentine was in<lb/>
prison, he fell deeply in love with<lb/>
his jail keeper's blind daughter.<lb/>
Supposedly, through the power<lb/>
of his prayers and the miracle<lb/>
of love, the girl gained back<lb/>
her sight just before his execu-<lb/>
tion. Before he was executed, he<lb/>
gave his love a note in which he<lb/>
signed "From your Valentine "<lb/>
- the same phrase we use today<lb/>
in greeting cards and love notes.<lb/>
St. Valentine was executed<lb/>
on Feb. 14 around 270 A.D. In<lb/>
496 A.D Pope Gelasius set aside<lb/>
Feb. 14 as Valentine's Day in order<lb/>
to praise his sacrifices for love.<lb/>
Some people say the mean-<lb/>
ing of Valentine's Day has been<lb/>
blinded by all the commercial-<lb/>
ism that the holiday receives.<lb/>
Yet others say commercialism<lb/>
reminds peopie of the meaning<lb/>
of Valentine's Day.<lb/>

Quick Picks: Album Review<lb/>
Kanye drops most<lb/>
anticipated album<lb/>
RYAN JOHNSON<lb/>
STArF WHITER<lb/>
Chicago stand up, your hoy<lb/>
tutj truly arrived. Kanye West,<lb/>
super-producer turned rapper<lb/>
released his debut album under<lb/>
Roc-A-Fella Records.<lb/>
West first hit the scene .is .1<lb/>
producer that was guaranteed to<lb/>
gtVC any rapper a hit. Known lor<lb/>
his soulful classic KteB samples,<lb/>
he has developed and molded his<lb/>
own style that is recognizable to<lb/>
an) hip-hop head.<lb/>
Contrary to popular belief,<lb/>
it isn't an easy task to make<lb/>
the transition from producer to<lb/>
rapper and still be taken seriously<lb/>
isee P-Iiddy and Timhaland).<lb/>
Not only do we take West seri-<lb/>
ously but his style, persona, beats<lb/>
and witty lyrics make us look to<lb/>
him to guide us into the neu<lb/>
generation of hip hop.<lb/>
The fourth track on the<lb/>
album All Falls Down features<lb/>
.1 sample by R&B living legend<lb/>
l.auryn Mill. West spits, "You<lb/>
think they want me up in this<lb/>
damn club? I still got to show<lb/>
ID to get up in Sam's Club He<lb/>
reminds us that even though he's<lb/>
on television morethan the Presi-<lb/>
dent and has hits on the radio In<lb/>
still does discount shopping just<lb/>
like the rest of us.<lb/>
However, there are times<lb/>
throughout the album in which<lb/>
he rhymes alxiut whips, jewels,<lb/>
and women, hut in these days of<lb/>
capitalist rap the listener can't<lb/>
really blame him, and in fact he<lb/>
does it in style.<lb/>
There are limes in the album<lb/>
where it seems a bit compro-<lb/>
mised to be more commercial.<lb/>
Guest appearances by l.udacris<lb/>
and Twista made the cut for<lb/>
the album to move units, but<lb/>
arc not really needed. West can<lb/>
Hand alone on all of the tracks<lb/>
and after a second listen the<lb/>
listener yearns lor him unac-<lb/>
companied.<lb/>
Stand out tracks on the<lb/>
album include "Get 'Em High"<lb/>
featuring everyone's new favor-<lb/>

West on "Never Let Vie Down<lb/>

It feels good, but it may also<lb/>
be good for you, doctors say<lb/>
(KRT)?The mood is set<lb/>
- candles, body oils, music.<lb/>
Gradually, your heart rate<lb/>
increases. The neural cells in<lb/>
your brain begin releasing<lb/>
endorphins - those feel-good<lb/>
chemicals that give you a sense<lb/>
of euphoria as potent as a shot<lb/>
of morphine.<lb/>
What you AREN'T likely<lb/>
thinking are the health benefits<lb/>
of the act you're about to be<lb/>
engaged in. Doctors, psycholo-<lb/>
gists and sex therapists say yeah,<lb/>
it feels good, but it may also be<lb/>
good for you.<lb/>
Take note:<lb/>
-Sex increases the blood flow<lb/>
and circulation throughout the<lb/>
body and may help reduce the<lb/>
risk of heart attack.<lb/>
-It is a mental health tonic<lb/>
and stress reducer.<lb/>
-Thirty minutes of sex burns<lb/>
on average 150 calories.<lb/>
"You're burning calories<lb/>
and it beats the heck out of jog-<lb/>
ging said Kva Ritvo, associate<lb/>
professor of psychiatry at the<lb/>
University of Miami and head<lb/>
of the Department of Psychiatry<lb/>
at Mount Sinai Medical Center in<lb/>
Miami Beach. "Clearly the longer<lb/>
you're doing it, the more calories<lb/>
you're burning<lb/>
Added Miami family practi-<lb/>
tioner Dr. Fleur Sack, "Exercise<lb/>
is good and sex is exercise and if<lb/>
you're doing it at least three times<lb/>
a week you'll be healthier.<lb/>
Though there's a mountain<lb/>
of research on how often Ameri-<lb/>
cans have sex and how much we<lb/>
enjoy it -or don't - there is scarce<lb/>
information on its physical and<lb/>
health benefits. One reason may<lb/>
be a lack of study subjects. Imag-<lb/>
ine having your heart rate moni-<lb/>
tored or blood pressure checked<lb/>
before, during and after inter-<lb/>
course? A real turn-off, right?<lb/>
One study conducted a<lb/>
decade ago by Or. David Weeks<lb/>
at Scotland's Royal Edinburgh<lb/>
Hospital did look at 3,500 men<lb/>
between the ages of 18 and 102<lb/>
(yes, 102!). The survey concluded<lb/>
that men having orgasms three<lb/>
or more times a week had a reduc-<lb/>
tion in heart disease and lived<lb/>
longer than those who didn't.<lb/>
During sex both men and<lb/>
women release a hormone<lb/>
called oxytocin, Ritvo said, the<lb/>
same hormone stimulated when<lb/>
women nurse babies.<lb/>
"The oxytocin can also lower<lb/>
blood pressure and reduce inci-<lb/>
dence of breast cancer in women<lb/>
who haven't nursed Ritvo said.<lb/>
"It makes you feel great and<lb/>
makes you want to stay home<lb/>
and care for your infant. That is<lb/>
probably one of the reasons you<lb/>
feel good in sex and relaxed<lb/>
Men release testosterone,<lb/>
important for strengthen-<lb/>
ing bones and muscles and<lb/>
male's immune function, she<lb/>
added.<lb/>
Men also can take comfort in<lb/>
this: The more sex you have, the<lb/>
less your chances of developing<lb/>
prostatitis - an enlargement of<lb/>
the prostate due to fluid buildup.<lb/>
More frequent ejaculation may<lb/>
help relieve that buildup, accord-<lb/>
ing to Sack, president-elect of the<lb/>
Florida Academy of Family Physi-<lb/>
cians, a group representing 3,500<lb/>
family physicians.<lb/>
She also cited t he research on<lb/>
heart rates. "When you're having<lb/>
sex with your spouse or some-<lb/>
one in a long-term relationship,<lb/>
your heart rate goes up to about<lb/>
120 beats per minute (from the<lb/>
normal of 70) she said, noting<lb/>
ttiat 120 beats per minute is a<lb/>
healthy range for cardiovascular<lb/>
fitness, but those whose rate goes<lb/>
higher increase their risk of heart<lb/>
attack. "If you're having extra-<lb/>
marital sex, it goes up to about<lb/>
180 beats per minute<lb/>
The incidence of heart attack<lb/>
during sex for men having affairs<lb/>
is higher than for those in com-<lb/>
mitted relationships, she said:<lb/>
"The risk of being caught is high<lb/>
and it's more exciting<lb/>
Of course, doctors cautioned<lb/>
against sex outside of a commit-<lb/>
ted relationship and urged safe<lb/>
sex to avoid contracting HIV<lb/>
AIDS and other sexually trans-<lb/>
mitted diseases. They also advised<lb/>
against unwanted pregnancies.<lb/>
But if you follow these cave-<lb/>
ats, you can have fun and boost<lb/>
your health. "It can improve<lb/>
sleep said Amy Demner, a<lb/>
Coral Springs licensed clinical<lb/>
psychologist. "It can also help to<lb/>
reduce worry and anxiety. When<lb/>
your mind is focused on pleasure<lb/>
and sexy things, anxious thoughts<lb/>
will tend to not be present<lb/>
Those endorphins that are<lb/>
released in the brain also act<lb/>
like a booster-shot for the body's<lb/>
immune system.<lb/>
Nothing beats stress - that<lb/>
silent menace that many believe<lb/>
contributes to ulcers, migraines<lb/>
and other disorders - like a good<lb/>
round of sex, experts say.<lb/>
"One of the mental health<lb/>
benefits is being able to have<lb/>
complete trust in another human<lb/>
being said Gary Neuman, a<lb/>
Miami Beach marriage counselor<lb/>
and author of "Kmotional Infidel-<lb/>
ity: How to affair-proof your mar-<lb/>
riage and other secrets to a great<lb/>
relationship "We are very anx-<lb/>
ious about losing control, but if we<lb/>

More Clarett controversey<lb/>
A federal judge refused to suspend her ruling Maurice Clarett is eligible<lb/>
to play in the NFL, and his lawyer said Wednesday the Ohio State running<lb/>
back will enter the draft. US. District Judge Shira Scheindlin ruled the NFL<lb/>
would not suffer irreparable harm if Clarett and other underclassmen are<lb/>
allowed to participate in April's draft. Scheindlin rejected NFL arguments that<lb/>
she must suspend the effect of last week's ruling in which she concluded<lb/>
an NFL rule barring eligibility to Clarett and other young athletes violates<lb/>
antitrust laws. Scheindlin said the NFLs concern that younger players might<lb/>
over-train or resort to steroid use to better qualify for the draft "makes no<lb/>
sense" in arguing for a stay since players must announce they are entering<lb/>
the draft by March 1.<lb/>
Crowd jeers U.S. team with chants of 'Osama<lb/>
The boos nearly drowned out The Star-Spangled Banner, and a few dozen<lb/>
fans chanted "Osama! Osama as the United States was eliminated by<lb/>
Mexico in Olympic men's soccer qualifying A loud anti-American crowd<lb/>
hollered as Mexico beat the United States 4-0 Tuesday night in the under-23<lb/>
tournament, claiming a berth in the Athens Olympics. As U.S. players left<lb/>
the stadium for their bus, several fans - some clutching beers - chanted<lb/>
"Osama! Osama in reference to al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.<lb/>
Police in riot gear held back the crowd and urged people to calm down.<lb/>
For Mexico, the game partly avenged a 2-0 loss to the United States in the<lb/>
second round of the 2002 World Cup, a far more important tournament<lb/>
involving national teams.<lb/>
New development in Williams case<lb/>
Former NBA star Jayson Williams killed a limousine driver while fooling with a<lb/>
shotgun, then tried to cover up his role by putting the victim's fingerprints on<lb/>
the weapon, a prosecutor said in opening statements Tuesday at Williams'<lb/>
manslaughter trial. Williams, 35, is charged in the death of Costas "Gus"<lb/>
Christofi, 55, who was killed in 2002 at Williams' 40-room mansion. Defense<lb/>
lawyer Billy Martin said the shooting by Williams whom he referred to as<lb/>
"a big Teddy bear" was an accident, and suggested that the retired New<lb/>
Jersey Nets center would testify to that Prosecutors maintain that while<lb/>
Williams did not intend to kill Christofi, he acted with reckless indifference<lb/>
when he took a Browning 12-gauge shotgun from a cabinet in a bedroom<lb/>
and opened it and closed it in one motion It fired and hit Christofi, who was<lb/>
about 3 feet away. Anticipating the defense, Lember insisted the shooting<lb/>
"wasn't any accident at all<lb/>
Ryan's door open to work with Astros<lb/>
Now that he's cut ties with the Texas Rangers, Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan is<lb/>
free to start working again with the Houston Astros. Ryan already owns the<lb/>
Round Rock Express, which is the Astros' Double-A team and is expected<lb/>
to become a Triple-A team in 2005. He also is co-owner of a Corpus<lb/>
Christi minor-league team, which will become the Astros' Double-A team in<lb/>
2005 Astros general manager Gerry Hunsicker said Tuesday that Ryan and<lb/>
Astros owner Drayton McLane Jr. have had several conversations about a<lb/>
possible position with the organization. Ryan has said it was natural that if<lb/>
he develops a relationship with another club that it would be Houston Ryan<lb/>
ended his formal relationship with the Rangers on Monday by deciding not<lb/>
to sign a new personal services contract. Ryan pitched for the Astros from<lb/>
1980-88. He was 324-292 with 5,714 strikeouts and a 3.19 ERA in 27 major<lb/>
league seasons with the New York Mets. California, Houston and Texas<lb/>
The Angels, Astros and Rangers have all retired his jersey. He spent the<lb/>
final five seasons of his career (1989-93) with the Rangers, throwing the<lb/>
last two of his seven no-hitters and recording his 5,000th career strikeout<lb/>
during that span<lb/>
Mets sign reliever Bottallco to minor-league deal<lb/>
The New York Mets signed relief pitcher Ricky Bottalico to a minor-league<lb/>
contract Wednesday and asked him to spring training as a non -roster invitee<lb/>
Bottalico, 34, appeared in just two games for the Arizona Diamondbacks<lb/>
last season and pitched just 1 23 innings He was 1-0 with a 540 ERA,<lb/>
spending most of the year with Arizona's Triple-A affiliate in Tucson. The<lb/>
6-foot right-hander opened his career with Philadelphia and spent seven<lb/>
seasons with the Phillies during two stints in the city He was an All Star with<lb/>
the team in 1996, posting a career-best 34 saves during that season and<lb/>
again in 1997. During a 10-year major-league career, Bottalico is 28-38 with<lb/>
a 4.03 ERA and 114 saves over 462 relief appearances with Philadelphia,<lb/>
St. Louis, Kansas City and Arizona.<lb/>
Millwood avoids arbitration with $11M<lb/>
Kevin Millwood agreed Tuesday to an $11 million, one-year contract with the<lb/>
Philadelphia Phillies, avoiding arbitration. Millwood, who made $9.9 million<lb/>
in his first season with the Phillies, had been seeking $12.5 million, while<lb/>
the team had been offering $10 million. In November, the Phillies offered<lb/>
the right-hander a three-year deal believed to be worth $30 million with<lb/>
an option for a fourth year. Millwood's agent, Scott Boras, rejected the offer,<lb/>
which the Phillies withdrew when they acquired former All-Star Eric Milton<lb/>
from Minnesota in December. Millwood went 14-12 with a 401 ERA for the<lb/>
Phillies last year, and pitched a no-hitter against San Francisco on April<lb/>
27. He had a poor finish, going 0-3 with two no-declsions In his last five<lb/>
starts, including two disappointing outings against eventual World Series<lb/>
champion Florida At the time, the Phillies and Marlins were battling for the<lb/>
wild-card berth. In his last start, Millwood left the field at Veterans Stadium<lb/>
in a strange moment, throwing his glove and hat into the stands as many<lb/>
fans booed. He said he had planned to do that all along, hoping to give<lb/>
fans a souvenir in the final game at the Vet<lb/>

It's every college baseball<lb/>
player's dream. To run out onto<lb/>
the field at<lb/>
Rosenbla'tt Stadium in<lb/>
Omaha, Nebraska in front of<lb/>
22,000 fans as one of the final<lb/>
eight teams in the country. The<lb/>
sensation that has eluded ECU<lb/>
for so long now seems closer<lb/>
than ever with nearly 20 guys<lb/>
returning from last year's squad<lb/>
along with a mixture of some<lb/>
outstanding freshmen and junior<lb/>
college talent.<lb/>
The Pirates return their main<lb/>
offensive threat, Darryl Lawhorn,<lb/>
for his junior season. Lawhorn<lb/>
was tabbed as preseason player<lb/>
of the year in Conference USA,<lb/>
but in order for the superstar<lb/>
to live up to the hype, assistant<lb/>
coach Tommy Eason believes<lb/>
that he will need protection in<lb/>
the line-up.<lb/>
"You have to surround him<lb/>
with good players said Kason.<lb/>
"You can't expect Darryl to<lb/>
be a one man wrecking crew.<lb/>
Everybody from top to bottom<lb/>
has to have a good year for<lb/>
Darryl to have a good year and<lb/>
vice versa<lb/>
With Ryan Norwood, Ryan<lb/>
Jones, Jamie Paige, and others<lb/>
in a high octane lineup, it will<lb/>
become increasingly difficult for<lb/>
teams to pitch around Lawhoin<lb/>
if Norwood, Jones, and Paige are<lb/>
consistently putting up good<lb/>
numbers.<lb/>
One of the main concerns<lb/>
of this year's squad is a lack of<lb/>
experience on the mound. Greg<lb/>
Bunn, who spent the last two<lb/>
seasons closing games for the<lb/>
Pirates, will become one of the<lb/>
go to guys as a starter. Freshman<lb/>
Ricky Brooks, who was selected in<lb/>
the 2003 MI.B draft, and junior<lb/>
college transfer Brody Taylor, may<lb/>
emerge as key performers in the<lb/>
Pirates rotation.<lb/>
Preseason C-USA polls have<lb/>
selected the Pirates to finish<lb/>
fifth in the conference this<lb/>
season, probably due to the lack<lb/>
of pitching.<lb/>
Despite preseason polls and<lb/>
the pitching staff's lack of expe-<lb/>
rience, Eason believes that these<lb/>
guys will be ready for the long<lb/>
haul.<lb/>
"1 told our guys if they can<lb/>
pitch against our team, then<lb/>
they can pitch against anybody<lb/>
in America Eason said.<lb/>
"You know, I don't put a lot<lb/>
of weight on that stuff Ipolls,<lb/>
Every team in this conference<lb/>
lost some key players from last<lb/>
year and no one knows who<lb/>
anyone else has brought in to<lb/>
replace them<lb/>
Tulane, which was number<lb/>
one in the poll, returns all<lb/>
their starters from a season ago.<lb/>
According to Eason however, the<lb/>
Green Wave lost players just like<lb/>
everyone else.<lb/>
"They lost a ton of offense,<lb/>
and probably the best player in<lb/>
the country last year. Those<lb/>
types of players are hard to<lb/>
replace Eason said.<lb/>
As Eason puts a hush on pre-<lb/>
season poll talk, the focus turns<lb/>
to spring practice, where he feels<lb/>
the squad has performed excep-<lb/>
tionally.<lb/>
"This is probably the best<lb/>
spring we've had in the last few<lb/>
years Eason said.<lb/>
"I think it's time to play<lb/>
somebody else in a different<lb/>
uniform<lb/>
They will this weekend as<lb/>
UNC-Asheville comes to town<lb/>
for a weekend series. The Pirates<lb/>
will start Brody Taylor on Friday,<lb/>
Greg Bunn on Saturday, and<lb/>
Ricky Brooks on Sunday. 10 to<lb/>
12 different pitchers could see<lb/>
mound time this weekend as all<lb/>
pitchers are on a low pitch count<lb/>
to begin the season.<lb/>
Also, the new $450,000 score-<lb/>
board that is part of phase one<lb/>
of the new Harrington field set<lb/>
to open next year will make its'<lb/>
debut this weekend.<lb/>
The weekend games will<lb/>
be at 3 p.m 2 p.m. and 1 p.m.<lb/>
respectively.<lb/>
With the season kicking off<lb/>
this weekend, the question that<lb/>
everyone seems to want answered<lb/>
these days is, is this the season<lb/>
for Omaha?<lb/>
"We definitely have the talent<lb/>
to go, there's no doubt about it<lb/>

The Memphis Tigers made<lb/>
their first visit to Mlnges<lb/>
Coliseum last night and made<lb/>
it a first time to be remem-<lb/>
bered. Antonio Burks dropped<lb/>
25 points on the Pirates,<lb/>
handing them yet another<lb/>
Conference USA defeat by a score<lb/>
of 79-73.<lb/>
Derrick Wiley and Moussa<lb/>
Badiane combined for 40<lb/>
points and 22 rebounds but<lb/>
ECU still couldn't muster up<lb/>
quite enough to defeat the red<lb/>
hot Tigers.<lb/>
Badiane was dominating<lb/>
inside, adding eight blocks<lb/>
to his credit on Wednesday<lb/>
evening.<lb/>
The Memphis victory marked<lb/>
their eight straight win as they<lb/>
improved to 8-2 in the confer-<lb/>
ence and secured themselves the<lb/>
third place spot in C-USA for the<lb/>
moment.<lb/>
Head Coach Bill Herrion was<lb/>
confident about his team's abil-<lb/>
ity to win the game but stated<lb/>
after the game that two key<lb/>
components killed the<lb/>
Pirates.<lb/>
"I put two things on the<lb/>
board after the game: shot selec-<lb/>
tion and untimely bad fouls<lb/>
said Herrion.<lb/>
"Our margin of error in this<lb/>
league is razor thin<lb/>
In the loss, the Pirates out-<lb/>
rebounded the Tigers and held<lb/>
them under 40 percent shooting<lb/>
on the night as well.<lb/>
"We out-rebound them and<lb/>
we hold them to 36 percent from<lb/>
the floor. I say we are going to<lb/>
win the game Herrion said.<lb/>
Another problem for the<lb/>
Pirates was freshman standout,<lb/>
Mike Cook. He got himself into<lb/>
early foul trouble, which limited<lb/>
him to just three first half min-<lb/>
utes. It proved to be a big blow to<lb/>
the Pirate offense.<lb/>
"We could not guard Cook<lb/>
said Memphis head coach, John<lb/>
Callipari "I thought East Caro-<lb/>
lina played great and Billy did<lb/>
an unbelievable job of having<lb/>
them ready and doing what they<lb/>
needed to do to beat us<lb/>
"I would be surprised if they<lb/>
don't hit .500 the rest of their<lb/>
games going out Callipari<lb/>
said.<lb/>
ECU will look ahead to UAB<lb/>
this weekend and then to a three<lb/>
game home stand, a vital part in<lb/>
the Pirates run for the tourna-<lb/>
ment.<lb/>
"Now we have a six game<lb/>
season and I told our kids that<lb/>
we can win every game that we<lb/>
play. 1 think we are good enough<lb/>
to do that Herrion said. "We<lb/>

The women's basketball team<lb/>

forwardcenter Courtney Willis<lb/>
will leave thier legacy with the<lb/>
women's basketball program.<lb/>
Willis is perhaps the<lb/>
most intriguing player of the<lb/>
three. With 1,250 points the<lb/>
Fayetteville, NC native just<lb/>
moved into seventh all-time in<lb/>
career scoring. She needs just 13<lb/>
points to move into sixth and has<lb/>
a chance to move into the top five<lb/>
overall. The humble Willis docs<lb/>
not care about records, "I think<lb/>
these are all great honors, but the<lb/>
further the team goes, it means<lb/>
more than individual things<lb/>
With Willis, there is<lb/>

Nothing has changed from<lb/>
last season. UAH is contending<lb/>
for the Conference- USA regular<lb/>

way deadlock for first place.<lb/>
How have they done it? Bal-<lb/>
anced scoring from their start-<lb/>

reasons. The Blazers have not<lb/>
given up more than 80 points in<lb/>
a game since their early season<lb/>
loss to the No. 6 Mississippi State<lb/>

In their first meeting with<lb/>

been climbed since 1991.<lb/>
The teams have now found<lb/>
their identity and the best play-<lb/>
ers in the country have emerged,<lb/>
some that have been there all<lb/>
along, and some you've never<lb/>
even heard of. Here are TF.C's<lb/>
mid-season All-American picks<lb/>
I See IKC picks below).<lb/>
One of the most valuable<lb/>
advantages a team can have is<lb/>
that important seeding in the<lb/>
NCAA tournament. As proved<lb/>
in year's past, the most highly<lb/>
ranked teams do not always merit<lb/>
a No. 1 seeding. Rl'l rankings are<lb/>
used to assist the "bracketolo-<lb/>
gists" In determining who plays<lb/>
who and where.<lb/>
The NCAA has used the<lb/>
Rating Percentage Index (RPI)<lb/>
since 1981 to help in the selec-<lb/>
tion of at-large teams and the<lb/>
seeding of all teams for the NCAA<lb/>
basketball tournament. The basic<lb/>
RPI is derived from three com-<lb/>
ponent factors: Div. I winning<lb/>
percentage (25 percent), sched-<lb/>
ule strength (SO percent); and<lb/>
opponent's schedule strength<lb/>
(2S percent). Games against<lb/>
non-Division I opponents are<lb/>
not used in calculating the RPI<lb/>
(See RPI Rankings).<lb/>
A Conference-USA tourna-<lb/>
ment championship is the only<lb/>
way for the ECU Pirates to make<lb/>
it to the NCAA tournament. The<lb/>
Pirates need to finish the season<lb/>
strong to get an invitation to the<lb/>
postseason tourney. 15 teams<lb/>
are in C-USA and only the top<lb/>
12 are invited. RCU is 14th with<lb/>
a 1-8 conference record. They<lb/>
are within striking distance of<lb/>
the 12th spot, currently held by<lb/>
Houston with a 2-7 mark.<lb/>

Stanford recruit recovering after<lb/>
suffering stroke during celebration<lb/>
PALO ALTO, Calif. (KKT) ?<lb/>
The night before Nick Robinson's<lb/>
game-winning basket brought<lb/>
Stanford fans onto the floor at<lb/>
Maples Pavilion, a similar scene<lb/>
played itst'lt out with tragic con-<lb/>
sequences at a high school gym<lb/>
in Tucson, Ariz.<lb/>
Joe Kay. a Tucson I lijjh senior<lb/>
headed to Stanford on a volley-<lb/>
ball scholarship, suffered a stroke<lb/>
and partial paralysis Friday in a<lb/>
pileup when about 200 fans<lb/>
stormed the court to celebrate<lb/>
a victory.<lb/>
Kay, 18, was tackled by an<lb/>
exuberant crowd after his two-<lb/>
handed slam punctuated a win<lb/>
over powerful Salpointe. His<lb/>
jaw was broken and he suffered<lb/>
a ruptured carotid artery. Kay<lb/>
remained In serious condition<lb/>
Tuesday at Tucson's University<lb/>
Medical Center, where he has<lb/>
been hospitalized since the<lb/>
game.<lb/>
Stanford men's volleyball<lb/>
coach Don Shaw learned of<lb/>
Kay's injuries Monday morning<lb/>
while searching for a high school<lb/>
result on a volleyball Web site.<lb/>
Shaw phoned Kay's parents in<lb/>
the hospital and said Stanford<lb/>
would honor the partial schol-<lb/>
arship awarded to Kay, a 6-foot-6<lb/>
outside hitter.<lb/>
"I just wanted the parents to<lb/>
know that no matter what hap-<lb/>
pens, I wanted to have something<lb/>
to give to him Shaw said.<lb/>
During lunch Monday, Shaw<lb/>
shared the story with Stanford<lb/>
basketball coach Mike Mont-<lb/>
gomery, whose team stunned<lb/>
Arizona, 80-77, when Robinson<lb/>
hit a 32-fool shot at the buzzer.<lb/>
"I hate to snap you back to<lb/>
reality Shaw told Montgomery,<lb/>
"but this is what happened to<lb/>
one ol my recruits<lb/>
Stanford's case was slightly<lb/>
different because Robinson was<lb/>
already was on the floor when<lb/>
the crowd poured onto the court.<lb/>
Still, he tried to protect himself<lb/>
by raising his forearms up near<lb/>
his face, to keep arms and legs<lb/>
away from his face and neck.<lb/>
His elbow was wedged into<lb/>
someone's neck. Arms were<lb/>
tangled and bodies contorted.<lb/>
Teammates screamed, "get off,<lb/>
get oft<lb/>
"You worry Montgomery<lb/>
said. "They're coming onto the<lb/>
floor and there's nobody in front<lb/>
of them. I worry about the oppos-<lb/>
ing team. Once, we had a student<lb/>
swing at one of our students. I've<lb/>
had people spit in my face<lb/>
Montgomery was not opti-<lb/>
mistic similar situations could<lb/>
be prevented.<lb/>
"The way it happened was<lb/>
just about as exciting as any tiling<lb/>
you could imagine Montgom-<lb/>
ery said. "It's so spontaneous. I<lb/>
don't know what you're going to<lb/>
do to correct that<lb/>
Kay is a National Merit<lb/>
Scholar, valedictorian, and plays<lb/>
first sax in the school jaz band.<lb/>
Though he was injured much of<lb/>
last season, he impressed Shaw<lb/>
at Stanford's volleyball camp last<lb/>
summer.<lb/>
"lie's just a great kid Shaw<lb/>
said. "The guys really like him,<lb/>
he liked our team. We're just<lb/>
going to hope and pray. I'll do<lb/>
everything I can, which isn't<lb/>
much. But he signed a letter ot<lb/>
intent, he's part of the Stanford<lb/>
volleyball family<lb/>
Kay remained in serious<lb/>
condition Tuesday night at Uni-<lb/>
versity Medical Center. His con-<lb/>
dition was improving, but he was<lb/>
unable to move his right arm and<lb/>
had limited use of his left. Kay's<lb/>
parents said he was speaking in<lb/>
short sentences but much of his<lb/>
Speech was garbled.<lb/>
Said Shaw: "You know, Nick<lb/>
Robinson probably doesn't even<lb/>
know about this guy right now.<lb/>
Rut those guys who were under<lb/>
that pile at Maples probably had<lb/>
a moment of fear there.<lb/>
And if they find out about<lb/>
Joe, they're going to feel very<lb/>
fortunate<lb/>
Basketball<lb/>

It was not easy grabbing<lb/>
the standout forwardcenter<lb/>
for ECU. Willis, who had offers<lb/>
from nearly everyone, chose<lb/>
ECU after her official visit. "ECU<lb/>
kept hounding me and sending<lb/>
me letters almost to the point<lb/>
that it was annoying. I figured I<lb/>
would check it out Willis said<lb/>
regarding recruiting.<lb/>
II has not been all gravy for<lb/>
Willis. She has experienced two<lb/>
head coaches and an interim<lb/>
coach. In reference to former<lb/>
coach Dee Stokes, "I shed a tear<lb/>
and moved on quickly. I love that<lb/>
(loach Baldwin-Tenet is here and<lb/>
her strategies<lb/>
Her freshman year Willis<lb/>
fought a bout with mononucleo-<lb/>
sis, which cut her season short.<lb/>
The senior forwardcenter<lb/>
is averaging 18 points per<lb/>
game and 9.5 rebounds.<lb/>
She is currently sixth in the<lb/>
league in scoring and third in<lb/>
rebounding. Willis has started<lb/>
every game this year. She was<lb/>
one of the main reasons why<lb/>
ECU was in second place in the<lb/>
conference two weekends ago at<lb/>
5-0. "You can either win or lose<lb/>
from here and I think we chose<lb/>
the wrong path Willis said<lb/>
about the current four game<lb/>
losing streak.<lb/>
The main cog of the Lady<lb/>
Pirate program does not know<lb/>
where she sees herself after<lb/>
graduation. "My mom wants to<lb/>
know too. We have live games<lb/>
left and we'll see what happens.<lb/>
I want to evaluate my options. I<lb/>
want to keep playing until my<lb/>
body falls apart and I have to<lb/>
play on nubs. I would love to go<lb/>
overseas and get the opportunity<lb/>
to travel Willis said.<lb/>
NO. 22 TCU (18-4, 7-2) will<lb/>
be no easy match-up tor the Lady<lb/>
Pirates. The Horned<lb/>
Progs are tied for third in the<lb/>
conference standings. Sandora<lb/>
Irvin will lead TCU into the<lb/>
match-up averaging 1S.4 points<lb/>
per game and 11.6 rebounds. I ler<lb/>
rebounding average is second<lb/>
in the league. TCU also sports<lb/>
Ebony Shaw who just broke the<lb/>
record for games played for the<lb/>
Horned Frogs. She averages 11.0<lb/>
points per game. Their game<lb/>
against Charlotte scheduled tor<lb/>
Sunday will be televised nation-<lb/>
ally on ESPN2.<lb/>
The University ol Houston is<lb/>
riding momentum off their triple<lb/>
overtime victory over Tulane on<lb/>
national television. The No. 21<lb/>
ranked Cougars arc led by pre-<lb/>
season conlerence player of the<lb/>
year Chandi Jones. Jones scored<lb/>
a career-high 39 points in the<lb/>
triple overtime thriller. Jones is<lb/>
averaging a conference leading<lb/>
22.0 points per outing and was<lb/>
named Co-CUSA Player of the<lb/>
Week. Houston<lb/>
(19-3, 8-1) is tied for the<lb/>
conlerence lead with DePaul and<lb/>
has won tour straight.<lb/>
"We've lost tour in a row.<lb/>
These will be deciding games to<lb/>
see what our team does and how<lb/>
we step up to losing. We know<lb/>
what we have to do to win and<lb/>
we know how we can beat teams<lb/>
so all we have to do is execute<lb/>
Willis said about the importance<lb/>
ot these last two home games<lb/>
ECU will lace No. 22 TCU on<lb/>
Friday, Feb. 13. Tip-off is sched-<lb/>
uled at 7 p.m.<lb/>

Feat at Joe's: Tiny school becoming a big story<lb/>
IKR'I'I?On Friday, six guys<lb/>
and two gals played 4-on-4 at<lb/>
the Saint Joseph's field 1 louse<lb/>
Since this was Philadelphia, they<lb/>
were setting staggered picks lor<lb/>
each other.<lb/>
Underneath the stands. Phil<lb/>
Martelli sat in his office remem-<lb/>
bering the high school game<lb/>
he saw In 1999 - Chester vs.<lb/>
Pennsbury - and the night he<lb/>
knew Jameer Nelson would be<lb/>
his point guard. I he point"<lb/>
was merely a descriptive term.<lb/>
Nelson, a junior at (.hester. didn't<lb/>
score one.<lb/>
I just sat there and said, this<lb/>
kid knows how to play Martelli<lb/>
said. He was playing a different<lb/>
game. He was on one level and<lb/>
everybody else was on another. I<lb/>
was amaed - and then I started<lb/>
looking around to see if there<lb/>
were other coaches around.<lb/>
"Jameer understood that he<lb/>
was a point guard. Nowadays<lb/>
people have turned that into'the<lb/>
guard who scores lameer knew<lb/>
exactly who he was<lb/>
Practice would begin in a lew<lb/>
hours, and the noontime pickup<lb/>
game would stop, but the pickup<lb/>
players could stay around if they<lb/>
wished. Practices are open at<lb/>
Saint Joe's. When the phone rings<lb/>
on the coach's desk, he answers<lb/>
it. When the students see him.<lb/>
they tell him, hey, great game-<lb/>
last night.<lb/>
At Duke, Mike Kryewski's<lb/>
office is on a floor where the<lb/>
elevator won't go, unless you have<lb/>
a special key. At most big I )ivision<lb/>
I basketball foundries, the coach<lb/>
is a mythic presence, more<lb/>
inaccessible than<lb/>
the school president.<lb/>
Martelli and Nelson and Saint<lb/>
Joseph's are in those clouds today<lb/>
- No. 3 in the polls and winners<lb/>
l I heir first 20 games. This might<lb/>
or might not continue, but they<lb/>
know exactly who they are.<lb/>
There are only 3,750<lb/>
undergraduate students. Usually,<lb/>
the Hawks are trying to earn<lb/>
elbow room in Philadelphia's<lb/>
Big S. They aren't rich kids,<lb/>
like Villanova's, and they aren't<lb/>
think-tank candidates, like<lb/>
I'enn's. Their campus takes up a<lb/>
couple Of blocks on the south side<lb/>
of City Line Avenue, the jammed<lb/>
four-lane road that defines the<lb/>
boundary of Philadelphia I he<lb/>
Hawk, who flaps constantly<lb/>
during games, often has a chip<lb/>
on his wing. The adjustment this<lb/>
season is not campaigning for<lb/>
respect but handling a national<lb/>
wave of it.<lb/>
"The kids on this campus<lb/>
have great passion Martelli said.<lb/>
"Everything they do they do it to<lb/>
the hilt. We have a weekend in<lb/>
the spring called lland-in-lland,<lb/>
where the students are matched<lb/>
up with a disabled person<lb/>
Ninety percent of our students<lb/>
participate in it, and it's great<lb/>
Basketball is the floodgate<lb/>
for that passion, yet at Saint Joe's<lb/>
they don't just wear funny wigs<lb/>
and bounce up and down. They<lb/>
open the hood of the game and<lb/>
study all the moving parts. The<lb/>
I lawks have sent seven coaches to<lb/>
the NBA, including the revered<lb/>
Dr. Jack Ramsay.<lb/>
Martelli's Hawks were in the<lb/>
I inal 16 in '97 - memorable for<lb/>
Martelli's tirade at whoever put a<lb/>
"Pa behind "SaintJoseph's" on<lb/>
the courtside banner - and were<lb/>
in the NCAAs in '01 and '03. He<lb/>
also suffered three consecutive<lb/>
losing seasons, and the admin-<lb/>
istration never budged.<lb/>
"We had a good program and<lb/>
we've got four starters returning<lb/>
next year Martelli said. "But<lb/>
lameer was the difference-maker.<lb/>
Ik's the one who has put us in<lb/>
this position<lb/>
Nelson plays with a slight,<lb/>
all-knowing smile. He is 5-<lb/>
foot-11 yet has led the Hawks<lb/>
in rebounding for an entire<lb/>
season. He is a master at find-<lb/>
ing all the possible geometric<lb/>
angLes for using screens and is<lb/>
undoubtedly the nation's best at<lb/>
shooting the gap between<lb/>
screencr and screenee, then<lb/>
doing whatever he likes.<lb/>
And he doesn't go point-<lb/>
less anymore. He is averaging<lb/>
20.4 points and 5.2 assists,<lb/>
shooting over 50 percent from<lb/>
the field and over 77 percent<lb/>
from the line.<lb/>
"I lifted a lot of weights over<lb/>
the summer Nelson said. "I<lb/>
probably improved my bench-<lb/>
