Communication<lb />
program hires faculty<lb />
to meet demand<lb />
KRISTIN DAY<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
ECU'S School of Communica-<lb />
tion has increased in size during<lb />
the past couple of years.<lb />
The school's role used to<lb />
be minor, placing journal-<lb />
ism majors in the English<lb />
Department and broadcasting<lb />
majors in Theatre Arts.<lb />
Recently, the school joined<lb />
with the arts to form the<lb />
College of Fine Arts and Commu-<lb />
nication, combining the Schools<lb />
of Art, Music, Theater and Dance<lb />
and Communication.<lb />
LinnerGriffen, interim direc-<lb />
tor for the School of Communi-<lb />
cation, said the integration is<lb />
a "good marriage<lb />
"Most of the fine arts are<lb />
in some way communicated<lb />
to others said Griffen.<lb />
"In many ways, I see com-<lb />
munication as part of that glue <lb />
part of that piece that allows<lb />
the other fine arts to present<lb />
themselves in a very favorable<lb />
light<lb />
The School of Communica-<lb />
tion became a more prominent<lb />
school when more students<lb />
declared a major or minor in<lb />
the field.<lb />
Griffen said the school's<lb />
growth is solely because of Its<lb />
increase in popularity.<lb />
"The number of students<lb />
who are actually accepted<lb />
or admitted into the major<lb />
has grown Griffen said.<lb />
The school now has more<lb />
than 950 students, Griffen said.<lb />
To accommodate the growth,<lb />
the school hired more faculty<lb />
members for the positions of<lb />
teachers and advisers.<lb />
"This year we were very<lb />
fortunate. We were able to bring<lb />

Colleges across the country have taken extra precautions, such as controlled dorm entrances, to keep students safe.<lb />
Police boost dorm rounds<lb />
Safety measures a<lb />
concern after rape<lb />
NICK HENNE<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
ECU police have increased<lb />
their rounds in dorms and<lb />
Resident Advisers have<lb />
become more cautious since<lb />
the Jan. 19 rape in White<lb />
Hall.<lb />
Amy Davis, crime pre-<lb />
vention sergeant of the ECU<lb />
Police Department, said<lb />
residence halls are safe; each<lb />
residence hall is assigned ECU<lb />
police officers that do regular<lb />
rounds and are in communi-<lb />
cation with the residential<lb />
advisers, coordinators and<lb />
residents.<lb />
Davis said after the rape<lb />
occurred, the ECU police have<lb />
become more cautious patrol-<lb />
ling the residence halls.<lb />
Davis said there has been<lb />
talk of adding surveillance<lb />
cameras and a One Card<lb />
system for entry to residence<lb />
halls, although no definite<lb />
decision has been made.<lb />
The ECU police are pro-<lb />
viding several programs to<lb />
residence halls to improve<lb />
student safety and aware-<lb />
ness.<lb />
"We do safety and<lb />
security programs, alcohol,<lb />
self defense and domestic<lb />
violence programs said<lb />
Davis.<lb />
The ECU Police Depart-<lb />
ment provides a liaison<lb />
program, created to build<lb />
communication between<lb />
students and ECU police and<lb />
better reports of incidents.<lb />
The program allows stu-<lb />
dents to express their con-<lb />
cerns to ECU police.<lb />
A common violation in<lb />
residence halls is visitation.<lb />
There are often unescorted<lb />
guests, and visitors stay<lb />
in residence halls past the<lb />
university's legal visitation<lb />
hours.<lb />
Davis said if there is a<lb />
suspicious looking person<lb />
who doesn't appear to be a<lb />
student standing outside a<lb />
residence hall, students and<lb />
RA's should immediately con-<lb />
tact the ECU police.<lb />
"You never know if that<lb />
person is armed in any kind<lb />
of way, whether it's a knife or<lb />
any kind of weapon they<lb />
need to call the police depart-<lb />
ment Davis said.<lb />
Although there are several<lb />
safety measures provided, stu-<lb />
dents still express concern<lb />
.about residence hall safety.<lb />
Maria Sengebusch, soph-<lb />
omore nursing major and<lb />
resident of White Hall, said<lb />
she was a little more nervous<lb />
after the incident occurred<lb />
but feels safer now because<lb />
more people are aware that<lb />
safety is an issue.<lb />
However, she said people<lb />
could easily enter dorms<lb />
where they don't live by<lb />
simply waiting for someone<lb />
with a key to enter and going<lb />
in behind them.<lb />
Other universities take<lb />
different measures to help<lb />
maintain a high level of secu-<lb />
rity in residence halls.<lb />
Danielle Cook, senior<lb />
photography major at Syra-<lb />
cuse University, said students<lb />
swipe their university identi-<lb />
fication cards upon entry to<lb />
residence halls.<lb />

you have to always use your<lb />

Vans are now the only vehicles in Safe Ride's fleet. The golf carts<lb />
once used on main campus have been discontinued.<lb />
Wednesday shuttle<lb />
service a success<lb />
JASMINE D. HARRELL<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
ECU'S late-night shuttle<lb />
program, Safe Ride, extended its<lb />
service to include Wednesdays<lb />
as of Jan. 21.<lb />
ECU police and Transit<lb />
Adviser, Scott Alford, decided<lb />
to add an extra day after diffi-<lb />
culties crossing 10th Street, and<lb />
inclement weather made the<lb />
use of the Safe Ride golf carts<lb />
impossible.<lb />
The new extended service<lb />
makes stops anywhere on<lb />
campus.<lb />
On weekends, Safe Ride pro-<lb />
vides service to about 100 stu-<lb />
dents a night, said Hank Bowen,<lb />
Safe Ride supervisor.<lb />
Bowen said there are<lb />
less students using the<lb />
service on Wednesdays, but<lb />
there are still more than on<lb />
Sundays.<lb />
Safe Ride ends services at<lb />
1 a.m. on Sundays but stays<lb />
close to the freshman park-<lb />
ing lot located on Dickinson<lb />
Avenue until 2 a.m. to accom-<lb />
modate freshmen returning<lb />
late from home.<lb />
Due to the high demand for<lb />
service, Bowen said in the next<lb />
few weeks, Safe Ride will run in<lb />
the daytime from 7 a.m. - 5 p.m<lb />
providing service to outer areas<lb />
of town.<lb />
"I think the new extended<lb />
days of Safe Ride will give<lb />
students more choices as to<lb />
which day they want to go<lb />
out said Shawn Braddy,<lb />
freshman computer science<lb />
major.<lb />
"It's also an added plus<lb />
for females due to some<lb />
of the things that have been<lb />
happening around campus<lb />
lately<lb />
Safe Ride provides service<lb />
for only ECU students by<lb />
checking students' One Card<lb />
before service is given, and<lb />
a student patrol officer is in<lb />
each van.<lb />
"My hope is that eventu-<lb />
ally more people will use Safe<lb />
Ride to attend campus events<lb />
Bowen said.<lb />
"There are concerts, art<lb />
shows and many different<lb />
entertainment events that run<lb />
until late at night. Hopefully, it<lb />
will bring more participation<lb />
to those events<lb />
Safe Ride, which was<lb />
proposed by Student Gov-<lb />
ernment Association, was<lb />
created as a service run from<lb />
grant money to ensure students<lb />
arrive home safely and<lb />
unthreatened.<lb />

PETER KALAJIAN<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Snow Hill Primary has<lb />
established a dual language<lb />
immersion program, the<lb />
first of its kind in rural east-<lb />
ern North Carolina to be<lb />
utilized by Kindergarten and<lb />
first grade Hispanic students<lb />
in the area.<lb />
In cooperation with the<lb />
ECU Geography Department,<lb />
Snow Hill is taking bold steps in<lb />
the ongoing challenge to offer<lb />
alternate learning opportunities<lb />
to Latino and Hispanic children<lb />
living within their district.<lb />
Under the new program,<lb />
Spanish-speaking students<lb />
will be able to learn from a<lb />
Spanish- speaking instructor,<lb />
while collaborating with peers<lb />
and participating in normal<lb />
activities.<lb />
Dubbed "Las Puentes<lb />
which is Spanish for bridges, the<lb />
program is the brainchild of Pat<lb />
MacNeill, director of instruction<lb />
and federal programs for Snow<lb />
Hill Primary School.<lb />
"The Greene County<lb />
Schools have been very pro-<lb />

changes in our communities<lb />
said MacNeill.<lb />
"We appreciate all the efforts<lb />
of Rebecca Torres and ECU<lb />

she wrote a state grant to help<lb />

Torres was unavailable for<lb />

"Las Puentes" requires an<lb />
application for admittance, and<lb />
the program runs for the entire<lb />
school day. One-half of the stu-<lb />

program speak English as their<lb />
second language.<lb />
Camoosha Bell is a bilingual<lb />
graduate student in international<lb />

the modified program at ECU.<lb />
"The earlier people can learn<lb />
a foreign language, the better<lb />
said Bell.<lb />
"I feel that programs like Las<lb />
Puentes should be a federally<lb />

system. It would not only be<lb />
advantageous to the individual<lb />
but to society as a whole<lb />
Snow Hill, which sits in one<lb />
of the poorest counties in the<lb />
state, has a Hispanic population<lb />

John Kerry claims victory<lb />
in both Tennessee, Virginia<lb />
FAIRFAX STATION, Va.<lb />
(KR'I)Sen. John Kerry of Mas-<lb />
sachusetts swept primaries in Vir-<lb />
ginia and Tennessee on Tuesday,<lb />
decisively defeati ng two Southern<lb />
rivals near their home turf and<lb />
all but assuring that he will be<lb />
the Democratic Party nominee<lb />
for president.<lb />
Kerry won easily in Virginia,<lb />
taking about 50 percent of the<lb />
vote, followed by Sen. John<lb />
Edwards of North Carolina with<lb />
26 percent and retired Army Gen.<lb />
Wesley (lark of Arkansas with 9<lb />
percent.<lb />
Kerry also breeed to victory<lb />
in Tennessee. With three-quar-<lb />
ters of the vote counted, he had<lb />
47 percent, Edwards 26 percent<lb />
and Clark 23 percent.<lb />
After finishing third in both<lb />
states, Clark decided to abandon<lb />
his presidential bid, a campaign<lb />
aide said late Tuesday night.<lb />
"General Clark has decided<lb />
to leave the race said Matt Ben-<lb />
nett, the Clark campaign's com-<lb />
munications director. "There was<lb />
tremendous momentum for John<lb />
Kerry and the mountain got too<lb />
steep to climb<lb />
Bennett said the decision<lb />
was a difficult one and that the<lb />
campaign opted to wait until<lb />
all the returns were in before<lb />
announcing the decision.<lb />
A formal announcement is<lb />
planned Wednesday in Little<lb />
Rock, Ark.<lb />
Kerry's victories, his first<lb />
in the South, gave him a new<lb />
jolt of momentum as he heads<lb />
into a showdown next week in<lb />
Wisconsin that could leave him<lb />
the acknowledged nominee of<lb />
his party.<lb />
He enters the coming week<lb />
having won five states in four<lb />
days and 12 of the 14 that have<lb />
voted so far. With Tuesday's<lb />
wins, he has shown political<lb />
strength in every region of the<lb />
country and among Democrats<lb />
from all demographic, economic<lb />
and racial groups.<lb />
More importantly, he<lb />
approaches next Tuesday's Wis-<lb />
consin primary without any<lb />
clear threat to his nomination.<lb />
card said Cook.<lb />
"If you are not a resident the<lb />
card will not work<lb />
Cook said a "public safety<lb />
person" stands at the front of<lb />
the entrance to residence halls<lb />
from 7 p.m. - 7 a.m. and keeps<lb />
records of everyone entering the<lb />
building.<lb />
Each person, student<lb />
or not, is required to show some<lb />
form of Identification and It is<lb />
documented upon arrival and<lb />
departure.<lb />
"They take a record of every-<lb />
one who comes in if there's<lb />
a problem, they have a record<lb />
Cook said.<lb />
There is also a 24-hour<lb />
front desk at each residence hall<lb />
that watches for people sneak-<lb />
ing in behind other residents,<lb />
Cook said.<lb />
Gillian Haux, freshman<lb />
nursing major, said she would<lb />
feel more secure if ECU provided<lb />
a similar system.<lb />
According to Aaron Lucier,<lb />
assistant director for technology<lb />
and interim associate director<lb />
for Campus Living, the overall<lb />
safety in residence halls has<lb />
not become a rising concern,<lb />
despite the recent rape in White<lb />
Hall.<lb />
"Safety and security has<lb />
always been a concern in resi-<lb />
dence halls, and I wouldn't say<lb />
this year has been particularly<lb />
more of a concern said Lucier.<lb />
Amy Davis said she would<lb />
like to remind students that<lb />
everyone is susceptible to crime<lb />
and they should always be con-<lb />
cerned about their personal<lb />
safety.<lb />
"1 think, mostly, when stu-<lb />
dents come on campus, they<lb />
think they are immune to crime,<lb />
until at least they have been vic-<lb />
timized, and then that's like an<lb />
eye opener Davis said.<lb />
Lucier said the rape could<lb />
make residence hall students<lb />
more aware of their own safety.<lb />
"Incidents like this serve as a<lb />
wake up call for most of the com-<lb />
munity and the staff to double<lb />
their efforts in trying to keep the<lb />
buildings secure Lucier said.<lb />
"It the rape is a serious<lb />
incident, and it concerns us,<lb />
and 1 hope it concerns resi-<lb />
dents in a way that it makes<lb />
them more aware of their<lb />
environment, makes them feel<lb />
a little more responsible in<lb />
maintaining the security as a<lb />
community member<lb />
Kristen Tucker, senior lamilv<lb />
and community services major<lb />
and an RA of Slay and Umstead<lb />
Halls, said she has definitely<lb />
become more cautious after the<lb />
rape occurred, and she feels other<lb />
RA's have as well.<lb />
Lucier said the univer-<lb />
sity takes several measures to<lb />
ensure safety in residence halls,<lb />
including educating stu-<lb />
dents on ways to create safe<lb />
environments.<lb />
The university can lock<lb />
doors and have staff members<lb />
complete rounds, hut residents<lb />
need to take responsibility as<lb />
well in ensuring their own<lb />
safety.<lb />
Building security is a joint<lb />
effort between the community<lb />
and the university, Lucier said.<lb />
Lucier said the construction<lb />
taking place on campus does<lb />
reduce the security of students.<lb />
"They construction sites<lb />
tend to create boxed-in areas<lb />
- they tend to create areas<lb />
where students cannot see<lb />
as clearly as we would like, and<lb />
so that's why we try to add the<lb />
additional lighting and deal<lb />
with concerns when they arise<lb />
Lucier said.<lb />
"The fact is those construc-<lb />
tion areas are always a concern<lb />
when talking about safety, and<lb />
what we try to do when we see<lb />
problems we try to add lighting<lb />
when appropriate, we try to<lb />
create fencing<lb />
Lucier said the new construc-<lb />
tion jobs taking place would<lb />
create a safer environment with<lb />
more open walkways and better<lb />
lighting when finished.<lb />

couldn't miss it - perfect bodies. Bodies that<lb />
have sucked, tucked and stuffed their way into<lb />
America's perception of perfection.<lb />
Just about everyone has a part of their body<lb />
that they have designated a "problem area<lb />
and every year millions of Americans go under<lb />
the knife in an attempt to repair the so-called<lb />
problem.<lb />
The question is would you choose<lb />
plastic surgery if given the option?<lb />
Society has warped the human mind into<lb />
thinking that we should all resemble the pic-<lb />
ture perfect models that look out at us from<lb />
magazine stands.<lb />
Cosmetic surgery is a radical attempt to help<lb />
get that guy from class to notice you or to get<lb />
the girt that lives around the comer to go out<lb />
on a date with you.<lb />
In our opinion, no one should change, espe-<lb />
cially physically, for anyone else.<lb />
Would you really want to appease someone<lb />
who probably feels equally as insecure about<lb />
some part of his or her own body?<lb />
And those celebrities everyone thinks are per-<lb />
fect, have spent millions for their look. They all<lb />
have the money to get that makeup artist and<lb />
fashion designer to pick out and cover those<lb />
little imperfections that we never see on the<lb />
covers of our favorite magazines.<lb />
Not to mention, studies that show people who<lb />
undergo plastic surgery once are more likely to<lb />
do It again, which is definitely true for celebrities<lb />
like Michael Jackson, wtiose view of himself<lb />
has caused him to make a habit out of going<lb />
under the knife.<lb />
Fortunately, no one is ever perfect, and those<lb />
problem areas that you glare at in the mirror are<lb />
things every person knows all too well.<lb />

Opinions In Brief<lb />
TEC EDITORIAL BOARD<lb />
Bring em' back<lb />
Let's all hope the Carolina<lb />
Panthers management brings back<lb />
the necessary players for another<lb />
playoff run next year.<lb />
The last two years, the Super<lb />
Bowl loser hasn't made it to the<lb />
playoffs the following year. Caro-<lb />
lina should sign both Head Coach<lb />
John Fox and wide receiver Steve<lb />
Smith to long-term deals.<lb />
This is the only way Carolina<lb />
will continue to have the fan sup-<lb />
port seen this past year. In 1996,<lb />
when Carolina went to the NFC<lb />
championship game, the team<lb />
was dismantled the following<lb />
year.<lb />
Hopefully, the guys in charge<lb />
will take care of business.<lb />
Williams' frustration<lb />
Roy Williams is frustrated, I<lb />
guarantee it. North Carolina is<lb />
playing the most inconsistent<lb />
ball of maybe any team in the<lb />
country.<lb />
They lost to Florida State,<lb />
and then the Heels go on to wax<lb />
Virginia and beat NCSU. Next<lb />
Carolina loses to Clemson, the<lb />
absolute worst team in the con-<lb />
ference, then plays great against<lb />
Duke in a two point OT loss and<lb />
goes on to beat Wake Forest last<lb />
Saturday.<lb />
They have the most talented<lb />
individual starting five in the<lb />
country and yet they can't get<lb />
consistent play out of more than<lb />
two of them. Coach Williams is<lb />
dying to get some of his hard<lb />
working, tough, humble team<lb />
players in the program.<lb />
And until Williams and<lb />
UNC get a strut of toughness<lb />
and suck it up out there on the<lb />
court, they'll be mince meat<lb />
come March.<lb />
Is Valentine's Day a<lb />
real holiday?<lb />
What's the purpose of<lb />
Valentine's Day?<lb />
Tome it's just another day <lb />
a day that's supposed to be for<lb />
celebrating feelings of love. But<lb />
truly it's another day for people<lb />
to spend money on each other<lb />
and exchange meaningless gifts<lb />
- which will be forgotten in less<lb />
than two weeks. Most people wait<lb />
until Valentine's Day to say or do<lb />
something special for someone<lb />
else. Whether It's romantic or<lb />
not, the things that will be said<lb />
and done just for the sake of it<lb />
being Valentine's Day probably<lb />
will not be repeated until next<lb />
year on Valentine's Day.<lb />
Too old to drive<lb />
I think that once drivers reach<lb />
a certain age, they need to hand<lb />
their license in.<lb />
F.lderly drivers aren't safe just<lb />
as a driver who's too young is not<lb />
safe. Some elderly drivers begin<lb />
to lose vision, have heart prob-<lb />
lems, and other health problems<lb />
that could cause them to wreck<lb />
or be unsafe for other drivers on<lb />
the road.<lb />
I was going down the road<lb />
yesterday and had to brake from<lb />
55MPHto25MPH. I thought the<lb />
person may be turning, but no,<lb />
he was driving 25 MI'H or slower.<lb />
There was no where to pass so 1 had<lb />
to stay behind the erson. The hard<lb />
thing to determine is at what age<lb />
should you lose your license?<lb />
Government could set an<lb />
age limit like they set a begin-<lb />
ning driver's age. Or they could<lb />
set an age and give the elderly a<lb />
restricted license. My experience<lb />
with elderly drivers has not been<lb />
good. But then again, I wish all<lb />
drivers drove like me!<lb />
Make them hear you!<lb />
In less than a year, the<lb />
students of ECU will have a<lb />
chance to participate in one of<lb />
the greatest privileges that this<lb />
country bequeaths unto its<lb />
citizens.<lb />
Americans will be given a<lb />
chance to vote for the president.<lb />
Not only that, students will be<lb />
given a chance to vote for or against<lb />
local politicians running for elec-<lb />
tion or re-election.<lb />
Too many people complain<lb />
about issues affecting them on<lb />
campus and around town. This<lb />
will be a chance to do something<lb />
pro-active about it.<lb />
We all have to realize that<lb />
there is no greater voice in the<lb />
country than one articulated in<lb />
the voting booth. We should all<lb />
start to read up on the national,<lb />
local and regional issues in the<lb />
country, county and this region<lb />
of the state.<lb />
This may not be where you<lb />
were born, but it's where we live.<lb />
We should have a say in how it's<lb />
governed and we do!<lb />
None of us got into school<lb />
without being able to read, so<lb />
let's put our literacy to work and<lb />
educate ourselves on what people<lb />
actually stand for and not just<lb />
look at what party banner flies<lb />
behind them on their election<lb />
posters.<lb />
Young voters have been<lb />
ignored by politicians for years<lb />
because most assume we don't<lb />
know or don't care about the world<lb />
around us. Don't prove them right<lb />
this year.<lb />
ECU's money woes<lb />
ECU plans to build an<lb />
intramural structure costing mil-<lb />
lions of dollars, which will suppos-<lb />
edly be the largest in the nation.<lb />
The first question that comes to<lb />
mind: Where are we getting this<lb />
money? <lb />
Tuition, of course.<lb />
The structure won't be finished<lb />
for years, which means a lot of us<lb />
won't ever get to see the building<lb />
we funded. This is unfair.<lb />
Just because ECU doesn't<lb />
really stand out academically<lb />
in North Carolina doesn't mean<lb />
some giant building will do the<lb />
trick.<lb />
Why not use the money to<lb />
hire more teachers? Why is this<lb />
university so concerned with<lb />
buildings lately?<lb />
In My Opinion<lb />
Fear not, life can be cell-free<lb />
(KR'I)After the dot-com bust<lb />
came the cell-phone boom, and it<lb />
hasn't stopped ringing.<lb />
(.ells are a mixed blessing, espe-<lb />
cially when that nifty $59-a-month<lb />
plan mushrooms, unexpectedly,<lb />
into a $159 bill. Certainly it says<lb />
something about our culture and<lb />
economy that cable TV and wire-<lb />
less phone companies are locked<lb />
in a death match to see which can<lb />
produce the highest monthly bill.<lb />
The price of electricity and anti-<lb />
quated landlines is chump change<lb />
by comparison.<lb />
Fear is the wireless provider's<lb />
greatest promotional tool, espe-<lb />
cially since Columbine and Sept.<lb />
II. It's a gadget for the anxious.<lb />
Many users feel unmoored<lb />
when they leave the house without<lb />
one, despite having survived much<lb />
of their life incommunicado IS they<lb />
strolled the grocery or drove Main<lb />
Street. It's as if the chance of a flat<lb />
tin or worse, is increased exponen-<lb />
tially by the phone's absence.<lb />
The underlying message is "no<lb />
cell phone equals bad things It's<lb />
like going out without a wallet or<lb />
pants. This is marketing at Its most<lb />
brilliantly devious.<lb />
There are second-graders with<lb />
cell phones, though the kids are<lb />
virtually never without adult<lb />
supervision. I know a 10-year-old<lb />
with a cell phone and a Palm Pilot,<lb />
the better to book play dates and<lb />
bath time.<lb />
Teen-agers have become the<lb />
greatest beneficiary of the fear<lb />
industry. At the end of 2002,<lb />
according to one major study, half<lb />
were packing cells. I suspect that<lb />
number is way higher now, consid-<lb />
ering the angst teen-agers inspire in<lb />
many parents.<lb />
For adolescent users, cell<lb />
phones are both freedom and<lb />
wireless umbilical cords. The tech-<lb />
nology has allowed them to be<lb />
more mobile, though there's no<lb />
evidence they've become inde-<lb />
pendent. (In the contrary, It's<lb />
turned them into toddlers.<lb />
The chauffeur, that being a<lb />
parent, is a seed-dial away. So<lb />
is the chef, which would also be<lb />
the parent, as well as the bank<lb />
and that bounty-hunter for all<lb />
things missing.<lb />
Honestly, if you tookall those<lb />
cell phones away, teen-agers<lb />
would have to do some things<lb />
themselves, like walk.<lb />
Or show up when they said<lb />
they would.<lb />
And woe to the parent foolish<lb />
enough to believe that a cell helps<lb />
her keep tabs on her offspring.<lb />
When a child calls on his Nokia<lb />
to tell you he's arrived home<lb />
from school, it's time to place a<lb />
discreet follow-up call on the<lb />
house line.<lb />
Cell phones haven't made<lb />
people more efficient. They've<lb />
increased tardiness and irre-<lb />
sx visibility, according to another<lb />
study. They've fostered selective<lb />
information-sharing, bringing<lb />
missed the last bus" stories Into<lb />
the 21st century.<lb />
Since the cell phone, eople<lb />
are ringing up the same individu-<lb />
als more frequently to have less<lb />
substantial conversations at a<lb />
conspicuously higher cost. We're<lb />
reaching out to annoy someone.<lb />
In the last month, I've<lb />
noticed people on the phone<lb />
while exercising at the gym,<lb />
taking a (supposedly) pastoral<lb />
walk in the woods and - though<lb />
I didn't actually see it - in bath-<lb />
room stalls. People either loathe<lb />
downtime without a voice in<lb />
their ear or they worry they'll<lb />
lose out if they're not an annoy-<lb />
ing ring away.<lb />
that, or they simply can't<lb />
shut up.<lb />
In My Opinion<lb />
American's should say 1 don't'<lb />
to Bush's marriage proposal<lb />
(KRT)Last month, President<lb />
Bush used the State of the Union to<lb />
Comment on the state of our unions<lb />
- our marital unions.<lb />
Bush's address included a call<lb />
for "our nation to defend the sanc-<lb />
tity of marriage and the adminis-<lb />
tration is proposing a $1.5 billion<lb />
initiative that would help build<lb />
the interpersonal skills required<lb />
for successful marriages, especially<lb />
among the poor.<lb />
Strong marriages are a worthy<lb />
goal and a key ingredient to a<lb />
healthy society. But at a time<lb />
when our budget is spilling red ink<lb />
to the tune of $500 billion, when<lb />
our schools are strapped for cash,<lb />
our states are going broke, 43 mil-<lb />
lion people have no health insur-<lb />
ance, and we are committed to the<lb />
multibillion dollar reconstruction<lb />
of Iraqi society, is this the best way<lb />
to spend federal dollars?<lb />
Surely we can rely on extended<lb />
families, communities and clergy<lb />
to help couples keep their rela-<lb />
tionships strong. Note the irony.<lb />
Aren't Republicans small-govern-<lb />
ment purists? Only, apparently,<lb />
when it comes to protecting the<lb />
wealthy and ignoring corporate<lb />
excess. When the subject is our<lb />
bedrooms and our most personal<lb />
affairs, Republicans champion<lb />
the most intrusive government<lb />
imaginable.<lb />
In describing the marriage<lb />
initiative, Assistant Secretary of<lb />
Health and Human Services Wade<lb />
I lorn told the New York Times last<lb />
week: "We want to help couples <lb />
manage conflict in healthy ways.<lb />
We know how to teach problem-<lb />
solving, negotiation and listening<lb />
skills<lb />
Maylte Horn should be passing<lb />
along those skills to his administra-<lb />
tion's foreign policy team, whose<lb />
idea of healthy conflict manage-<lb />
ment is the unprovoked invasion of<lb />
a sovereign nation. An administra-<lb />
tion that can't even make nice with<lb />
some of our most faithful allies is<lb />
now telling us how to conduct our<lb />
personal relationships.<lb />
At the heart of conservative<lb />
doctrine is the belief that, if you<lb />
are poor, there is something<lb />
wrong with you. If you are down<lb />
on your luck, it must be because<lb />
your lifestyle does not meet their<lb />
standard of what is traditional or<lb />
mainstream. No amount of men-<lb />
toring or conflict management<lb />
could have saved my marriage to<lb />
a man who left me alone and des-<lb />
titute at the age of 29, with three<lb />
young children to raise.<lb />
W hat 1 needed at that desperate<lb />
moment in my life was not right-<lb />
wing moralizing, but the social<lb />
safety net - the very social safety<lb />
net conservatives seem deter-<lb />
mined to tear down. Although I<lb />
was employed, I needed public<lb />
assistance to make ends meet, so<lb />
that I could provide my family with<lb />
life's basics - food, health insurance<lb />
and child care.<lb />
Only truly compassionate gov-<lb />
ernment policies helped me turn<lb />
my life around<lb />
We don't need government<lb />
marriage counseling; we need<lb />
good jobs with good benefits. We<lb />
need flexible workplaces, universal<lb />
health insurance, affordable child<lb />
care, safe after-school programs<lb />
and much more. We need a gov-<lb />
ernment that helps ease the pres-<lb />
sures on hard-working parents who<lb />
never seem to have enough time or<lb />
money to meet their obligations to<lb />
their families without compromis-<lb />
ing their jobs.<lb />

"We get no finaiu ial support<lb />

Holly Garriott, Emerge Gallery<lb />

New Subway hopes to add beer to menu<lb />
The Subway on Tenth Street hopes to add beer to its menu<lb />

TOMEKA STEELE<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
The new Subway in Green-<lb />

St may be unlike any other on<lb />
the East coast. Owner Ashley<lb />
Bleau wants the new Subway<lb />

While still under debate,<lb />
corporate reportedly isn't giving<lb />

is currently conveying.<lb />
Bleau is a 2000 graduate<lb />

served at the new Subway here<lb />
in Greenville.<lb />
The sale of beer could<lb />
threaten the reputation and<lb />
credibility of Subway as a<lb />
franchise. Beer isn't exactly in<lb />
accordance with health since<lb />
regular beers have between 90<lb />
and 200 calories.<lb />
"1 would think that Subway<lb />
would want to serve beer to get<lb />
business from college students.<lb />
But Subway is on this big health<lb />
kick with the Jared diet and now<lb />
serving Atkins. Maybe they want<lb />
more business from people who<lb />
aren't watching their weight,<lb />
but beer is definitely not a part<lb />
of a healthy diet. It totally con-<lb />
tradicts the message that the<lb />
Subway franchise is sending out<lb />
said Erin Brothers, senior nursing<lb />
and exercise sports major.<lb />
The decision whether to<lb />
market beer is still under consid-<lb />
eration, because the corporation<lb />
realizes how much money can be<lb />
made serving beer in close prox-<lb />
imity to a large campus.<lb />
"I wouldn't go to the new<lb />

it probably would help the own-<lb />

Weekend Excursion has<lb />

cover songs, such as "Uockin'<lb />

"The band has done<lb />

Fisher, a former ECU student, ,<lb />

several years. He spent a lot of<lb />

Upon graduating, he worked<lb />
at Wachovia Bank, while still<lb />
performing in a band. Unin-<lb />

to gain success by going solo<lb />
full time. At one of his shows,<lb />
Fisher was introduced to Jeff<lb />

of Weekend Excursion. They<lb />
asked if he would be interested<lb />

I'm not sure il that wasa bad thing. When you know you're up<lb />

I think tonight's top performers were 16-year-old Diana<lb />

voices were powerful I can see either one of these ladles going<lb />

Intramural basketball<lb />
season in full swing<lb />
Intense competition at<lb />
SRC, Christenbury<lb />
BRENT WYNNE<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
The intramural basketball<lb />
season has recently gotten<lb />
underway and things are start-<lb />
ing to heat up on the court as<lb />
teams are battling for playoff<lb />
positions.<lb />
In the current format, each<lb />
team is designated tour regular<lb />
season games to be played in a<lb />
two to three week span. A team<lb />
must win at least one game to<lb />
qualify for the playoffs that<lb />
begin Feb. 16.<lb />
According to Assistant I lirec-<lb />
tor of intramurals, Laura Triyo-<lb />
nls, there are nearly 100 teams<lb />
competing this year. Teams are<lb />
split into divisions according to<lb />
skill level and their affiliations<lb />
with ECU.<lb />
The divisions include frater-<lb />
nity purple andgold, men's purple<lb />
and gold, sorority, women's,<lb />
co-rec, and gradfacultystaff.<lb />
The largest division is the<lb />
men's purple league, which has<lb />
about M) to 40 teams.<lb />
Teams will not be seeded<lb />
according to regular season<lb />
records due to some problems in<lb />
the past with teams with identi-<lb />
cal records getting unfair draws<lb />
in the playoffs. Instead, teams<lb />
that qualify for the playoffs<lb />
must send a representative to<lb />
the student recreational center<lb />
on Wednesday to sign up for a<lb />
playoff time that is convenient<lb />
for their squad. Ibis eliminates<lb />
conflict on the basis that it allows<lb />
the teams to decide when they<lb />
will play.<lb />
With the regular season set<lb />
to end this weekend, Trivonis<lb />
is pleased with how things have<lb />
proceeded thus far.<lb />
"The season is Hearing an<lb />
end, and we have seen some<lb />
great basketball played up to<lb />
this point. We are excited about<lb />
the playoffs because there are a<lb />
lot ol good teams left, so it will<lb />
definitely be very competitive<lb />

ECU men fall in<lb />
another close game<lb />
ROBERT LEONARD<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Minges Coliseum became a<lb />
whistle test Saturday night.<lb />
A total of 66 fouls were called<lb />
between ECU and Charlotte. All<lb />
but five of LCU's players fouled<lb />
out; and one of those five had<lb />
four fouls. While the amount<lb />
of fouls called was a unique<lb />
take on the evening, that wasn't<lb />
even the half of it. This was the<lb />
greatest game I've ever seen at<lb />
Minges Coliseum.<lb />
the real game story was the<lb />
end ot regulation. K( .V is up two.<lb />
Charlotte has the ball and shoots<lb />
the three. KI.ANC. Senior Derek<lb />
Wiley grabs the rebound and is<lb />
fouled Immediately. Two tree<lb />
throws and this game is over.<lb />
Wiley steps up to the line. I In<lb />
lirst one rims out. Hey no prob-<lb />
lem right, we still got one more<lb />
Iree throw. With this shot, ECU<lb />
could forceharlotte to shoot t he<lb />
three. No good. The 49ers get the<lb />
rebound.<lb />
At this point, I got<lb />
nervous. Charlotte hadn't played<lb />
well all night, but over the<lb />
years, they have hit big shots<lb />
when they needed them. I've<lb />
always heard that when you're<lb />
down two at home, you play for<lb />
the tie, but when you're down<lb />
two on the road, you play for<lb />
the win.<lb />
( harlotte head coach Bobby<lb />
UltZ seemed to agree.<lb />
Charlotte's three-point<lb />
sniper, Brendan Plavich hurls up<lb />
a three-point brick with about<lb />
seven seconds left in the game<lb />
and the rebound flies out to the<lb />
foul line Charlotte senior and<lb />
fellow three-point guru Demon<lb />
Brown grabs the rebound and<lb />
shoots while slill in the air - iron<lb />
unkind.<lb />
At this point 1 thought ECU<lb />
had pulled it off.<lb />
Just as that enters my head,<lb />
it leaves rather quk kly. Calvin<lb />
 lemmons, a reserve center for<lb />
the 49ers, only playing because<lb />
starting center Martin Iti b.nl<lb />
fouled out, runs straight to the<lb />
glass and slams home the Brown<lb />
miss - at the buzzer. Alter<lb />
celebration from one bench,<lb />
disbelief from the other, and<lb />
a review of the videotape, the<lb />
basket counted. ECU had a<lb />
haii oi a second left to puii of<lb />
a Christian Laettnei type play,<lb />
which didn't work.<lb />
After 4o minutes o<lb />
basketball. 16(1 points, and at this<lb />
point, about 60 louls later, the<lb />

Somewhere in the middle,<lb />
you also will groan at college<lb />
basketball. How it's changed.<lb />
How the ' household names<lb />
went outside and never came<lb />

hope that your precious college<lb />

That's the fear nowadays,<lb />
isn't it? Basketball is about to<lb />
