Downtown dress codes,<lb />
policies allow discrimination<lb />
Students have repdrted feeling wrongfully turned away from clubs in downtown Greenville on the basis of violating clubs' dress codes or not having a valid student I.D.<lb />
Clubs deny access to<lb />
those who are going to<lb />
be 'rowdy'<lb />
VANESSA CLARKE<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
At some clubs in downtown<lb />
Greenville, appearance is every-<lb />
thing. Stories abound about people<lb />
that have been denied entry into<lb />
these clubs because of their<lb />
clothes, their military identifica-<lb />
tion cards, their affiliation with a<lb />
Greek organization or even, some<lb />
say, because of their race.<lb />
The dress code of one of down-<lb />
town Greenville's clubs, The Ele-<lb />
ment, cites that anyone wearing<lb />
"excessively baggy clothing<lb />
bandanas or "any form of the 'do'<lb />
rag" will be refused entry. People<lb />
without a college identification<lb />
card and driver's license will be-<lb />
denied entry, as people wearing<lb />
baseball caps pointed to the back<lb />
or side will also not be allowed in.<lb />
They also "obtain the right to refuse<lb />
any person entrance according<lb />
to the dress code posted outside<lb />
the main entrance to the club.<lb />
"I think the challenge is that in<lb />
Greenville itself, we have a lot of<lb />
local people and visitors looking<lb />
for stuff to do said Ion Outter-<lb />
bridge, director of Greek Life.<lb />
"And some of the clubs do not<lb />
understand urban wear. It's not<lb />
thug wear, it's just style<lb />
Outterbridge says he has heard<lb />
from students that discrimination<lb />
has been a problem in the past.<lb />
In fact, two or three years ago,<lb />
Outterbridge's college fraternity,<lb />
Phi Beta Sigma, staged a march on<lb />
downtown to protest the clubs' de<lb />
fttediscrimination. He said it was<lb />
a diverse march, which included<lb />
people of various ethnicities who<lb />
felt a policy that kept people out<lb />
was wrong.<lb />
Still, Outterbridge said that<lb />
despite the need for the clubs to<lb />
change, Greek organizations and<lb />
all those having these kinds of<lb />
problems need to change their<lb />
image so that they are not targets.<lb />
"It's just educating the commu-<lb />
nity to stop stereotyping people<lb />
he said. "I mean there are plenty<lb />
of college students in a fra-<lb />
ternity or sorority who have<lb />
a 3.5 GPA<lb />
A lot of these students feel<lb />
so unwelcome at the downtown<lb />
clubs that they now go elsewhere,<lb />
to Dynasty or Club Fusion, Out-<lb />
terbridge said.<lb />
Sophomore Kate Rice, an<lb />
occupational therapy major, has<lb />
also heard about the discrimina-<lb />
tion that goes on downtown, she<lb />
has seen it in action.<lb />
"The clubs do not let a lot<lb />
of guys in sometimes she said.<lb />
"They show extreme amounts of<lb />
favoritism. For some people, they<lb />
make them show a license, and<lb />
others, a school I.D<lb />
Rice has especially seen how<lb />
the clubs often will not allow<lb />
those in with military identifica-<lb />
tion. She has experienced this first<lb />
hand. She tried to get into a club<lb />
last year with four Marines.<lb />
"Three of them the Marines<lb />
were not allowed into what was<lb />
formerly known as Cabanas she<lb />
said.<lb />
Though Cabanas no longer<lb />
exists, several of the other clubs<lb />

Warren Buffett<lb />
Students travel to<lb />
Nebraska, meet world's<lb />
second richest man<lb />
BY LEE SCHWARZ<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
On Thursday, Nov. 16,<lb />
graduate and undergraduate<lb />
students from Dr. .Sam<lb />
Tibbs' finance classes departed<lb />
Greenville for Omaha, Neb.<lb />
The students' objec-<lb />
tive was to attend a<lb />
question-and-answer session<lb />
with Warren Buffett and to<lb />
visit some of the businesses owned<lb />
by Buffett's holding company,<lb />
Berkshire Hathaway.<lb />
"He's like your grandpa,<lb />
except that he has billions of<lb />
dollars. He will answer any<lb />
question except about the stocks<lb />
he will trade says Tibbs of Buffet,<lb />
who is known for his congenial and<lb />
unpretentious candor.<lb />
Buffett met with busi-<lb />
ness students from ECU and<lb />
Mississippi State University.<lb />
He also posed for photographs<lb />
and shook hands.<lb />
Second year MBA student Molly<lb />
Maxson, who got to ride in Mr.<lb />
Buffett's car on the way to the<lb />
lunch he treated student to, said of<lb />
Buffett, "He is very generous<lb />
and genuinely interested in us<lb />
as he asked us lots of questions<lb />
pertaining to what we want to do<lb />
-<lb />
after we graduate<lb />
Additionally, students<lb />
from both universities visited<lb />
Weitz Mutual Funds and two<lb />
companies owned by Berkshire<lb />
Hathaway: Nebraska Furniture<lb />
Mart and Borsheim's Jewelry.<lb />
At Borsheim's Jewelry<lb />
the students listened to CEO<lb />
Susan Jacques explain about how<lb />
Borsheim's is able to com-<lb />
pete with other jewelry stores<lb />
because of low prices, very<lb />
low operating expenses<lb />
and loyal customers.<lb />
She indicated that Bor-<lb />
sheim's operating costs were<lb />
approximately half of the<lb />
industry average.<lb />
Mrs. Jacques also<lb />
spoke of the importance of doing<lb />
a job every day that one loves<lb />
doing and how that makes a big<lb />
difference in performance.<lb />
Mr. Buffett spoke on an o<lb />
array of issues such as the <lb />
trade deficit, weapons of mass <lb />
destruction and the importance <lb />
of selecting a good spouse. ,g<lb />
The students asked ques-<lb />
tions which Mr. Buffett<lb />
enthusiastically answered<lb />
saying, "I enjoy meeting college<lb />
students and being the Chairman<lb />
of Berkshire Hathaway. I can't<lb />
wait to get to the office every<lb />
morning. I enjoy answering<lb />
your questions and I have no<lb />
doubt that all of you will do<lb />
very well financially<lb />
An ECU business student stands with Warren Buffet in Nebraska.<lb />
Mr. Buffett announced in<lb />
June, that he will give away<lb />
$30.7 billion of his money to<lb />
the Gates Foundation at 5<lb />
percent annually every July<lb />
starting in 2006.<lb />
The Gates Foundation<lb />
helps to enhance healthcare<lb />
and education. Mr. Buffett also<lb />
invited the students to the<lb />
annual Berkshire Hatha-<lb />
way shareholder meetings in<lb />
Omaha, Neb.<lb />

that still line the downtown<lb />
streets continue this practice.<lb />
One of the bouncers, who<lb />
would give neither his name nor<lb />
that of the owner, said that his<lb />
hands were tied by the dress code<lb />
and that the club did not have<lb />
any kind of active discrimination<lb />
policy.<lb />
"If they don't meet what's on<lb />
the door placards, we don't let<lb />
them in he said.<lb />
He would say nothing other<lb />
than this, except to clarify what<lb />
kind of person clubs reserve the<lb />
right to deny entry to.<lb />
"It's just the fact that if you're<lb />
too intoxicated or being an overall<lb />
ass, we reserve the right not to<lb />
let you in<lb />

Pope urges leaders to renounce<lb />
violence<lb />
(AP) Pope Benedict XVI<lb />
urged leaders of all religions<lb />
Tuesday to "utterly refuse" to<lb />
support any form of violence in<lb />
the name of faith, while Tur-<lb />
key's top Muslim cleric com-<lb />
plained to the pontiff of growing<lb />
"Islamophobia" in the world.<lb />
As he began his first visit to<lb />
a Muslim country - a trip that<lb />
drew extraordinary security but<lb />
few onlookers - Benedict sought<lb />
a careful balance as he extended<lb />
friendship and brotherhood to<lb />
Muslims, hoping to end the outcry<lb />
from many Muslims over his<lb />
remarks linking Islam to violence.<lb />
He expressed support for Tur-<lb />
key's efforts to join the European<lb />
Union, movingaway from opposition<lb />
he voiced when he was a cardinal.<lb />
But the German pope also<lb />
hammered away at key points<lb />
of his 18-month papacy, tell-<lb />
ing diplomats that leaders of all<lb />
religions must "utterly icfuse to<lb />
sanction recourse to violence as<lb />
a legitimate expression of faith<lb />
He avoided mention of any<lb />
specific religion, even as he decried<lb />

Bush says U.S. won't withdraw<lb />
from Iraq<lb />
(AP) Under intense pressure<lb />
to change course, President Bush<lb />
on Tuesday rejected suggestions<lb />
Iraq has fallen into civil war and<lb />
vowed not to pull U.S. troops out<lb />
"until the mission is complete<lb />
On the eve of his visit to Jordan<lb />
for meetings with Iraqi Prime<lb />
Minister Nouri al-Maliki, Bush<lb />
portrayed the battles in both<lb />
Afghanistan and Iraq as central<lb />
fronts in a war "against the extrem-<lb />
ists who desire safe havens and are<lb />
willing to kill innocents any-<lb />
where to achieve their objectives<lb />
The stakes in Iraq are huge<lb />
for Bush. His war policies were<lb />
repudiated in U.S. midterm elec-<lb />
tions that handed control of Con-<lb />
gress to Democrats. A bipartisan<lb />
blue-ribbon panel is about to issue<lb />
a report proposing changes in<lb />
the administration's approach in<lb />
Iraq. And al-Maliki's government<lb />
itself sometimes seems to be at<lb />
cross purposes with Washington.<lb />
Bush set the stage for the Jordan<lb />
talks with a speech at the NATO<lb />
summit here and at an earlier news<lb />
conference in neighboring Estonia.<lb />
The president said he was flex-<lb />
ible and eager to hear al-Maliki's<lb />
ideas on how to ease the violence.<lb />
"There's one thing I'm not<lb />
going to do, I'm not going to pull<lb />
our troops off the battlefield before<lb />
the mission is complete Bush<lb />
declared in his speech. There are<lb />
about 140,000 U.S. forces in Iraq.<lb />

a parole appointment. Williams<lb />
said he was not able to contest<lb />

Iraqis seek refuge in Jordan's capital<lb />
(MCT) Retired doctors<lb />
in the dapper black hats of old<lb />
Baghdad slap down dominoes in<lb />
smoky cafes. Construction"cranes<lb />
operated by Iraqi workers dot<lb />
the skyline.<lb />
And when the dancing begins<lb />
after midnight at Cafe Sultan, a<lb />
sweaty singer gives a shout-out<lb />
to Iraqi patrons, calling them by<lb />
their home towns: "Where are you,<lb />
Fallujah? Where are you, KarbalaP<lb />
Where are you, eople of Baghdad"<lb />
The answer is: Amman.<lb />
More than 600,000 Iraqis have<lb />
(led the war next door to settle here,<lb />
leaving behind their homeland's<lb />
civil war. Shiites and Sunnis mingle<lb />
easily, filling this city's downtown<lb />
streets with the guttural dialect of<lb />
Iraq, not the sounds of gunfire<lb />
When President Bush and<lb />
Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-<lb />
Maliki meet here Wednesday and<lb />
Thursday, they'll do so in the midst<lb />
of a thriving community that has<lb />
everything the Bush administration<lb />
promised Iraqis before the begin-<lb />
ning of the war: a flourishing press,<lb />
building contracts, a renaissance<lb />
of civil society and a vibrant arts<lb />
community.<lb />
Lower-income refugees strug-<lb />
gle to .get by in dreary downtown<lb />
apartments, overstaying their visas<lb />
for peaceful nights, while middle-<lb />
class Iraqis say life here is better<lb />
than at home.<lb />
"I bought a house better than<lb />
my house in Baghdad. My daughter<lb />
is in a very good school here said<lb />
Ammar Klias, a Christian business-<lb />
man sharing breakfast with a Sunni<lb />
friend at an Iraqi diner.<lb />
"Of course, I miss my country,<lb />
but what can I find in my country<lb />
now? When I look at Iraq, I cry<lb />
Both men reached for tiny cups<lb />
of ultra-sweet, dark tea made the<lb />
Iraqi way. It was a chilly day in<lb />
Iraqi men who have fled the war play dominoes together to relax.<lb />
Amman; the weather made Elias<lb />
and his friend long for a winter<lb />
breeze off the Tigris River.<lb />
"This is Baghdad now Elias<lb />
said with a rueful smile. "I've been<lb />
here three years, and I don't think<lb />
I've talked to a Jordanian. My street<lb />
is all Iraqi, my neighbors are all<lb />
Iraqi. I don't feel like I'm in Amman<lb />
A Human Rights Watch report<lb />
released ahead of Bush's visit called<lb />
on the president to help Jordan<lb />
cope with the stream of refugees<lb />
to prevent "sending them back into<lb />
mortal danger Jordan hasn't issued<lb />
a formal plea for help, but strains are<lb />
evident: Immigration officials have<lb />
stepped up enforcement against Iraqis<lb />
who've overstayed their visas, leading<lb />
Human Rights Watch to ask Jordan<lb />
to grant them refugee status.<lb />
Many Jordanians regard the<lb />
influx of refugees with wariness.<lb />
They complain of Iraqis snatching<lb />
up the good jobs, driving up hous-<lb />
ing prices, dragging war into their<lb />
stable host country. They're quick<lb />
to point out that last year Iraqi sui-<lb />
cide bombers blew up three luxury<lb />
hotels in Amman, killing at least 56<lb />
people and wounding 100 others.<lb />
Entrepreneurs, however, regard<lb />
Iraqis as a growing market that's<lb />
injected new life into Jordan's<lb />
economy. Downtown Amman is<lb />
now peppered with storefronts that<lb />
evoke Iraq, many of them copies of<lb />
shops found in Baghdad.<lb />
The green and white Iraqi<lb />
Airways office has a new facade.<lb />
Imported Iraqi dates sell for 10 times<lb />
the price at home. Phone cards are<lb />
named after Iraq's ancient Sume-<lb />
rian civilization Iraqi newspapers<lb />
and TV stations keep offices here.<lb />
One of Amman's hottest new<lb />
nightspots is Tigris, an elegant bar<lb />
w ith a three-page wine list and an<lb />
Iraqi fblkloric ensemble. Foreign<lb />
diplomats schmoozed with Iraqi<lb />
and Jordanian officials at the gala<lb />
grand opening last year. Asaad<lb />
Mohammed, the Basra, Iraq-born<lb />
manager, laughed as he recalled how<lb />
some nonIraqi guests thought<lb />
"Tigris" was an animal.<lb />
He smiled as the guitar notes<lb />
drifted across the restaurant and<lb />
took him back to the country he<lb />
has left behind.<lb />
"When you hear these songs,<lb />
you remember the life you used to<lb />

ELIZABETH LAUTEN<lb />
CONTRIBUTING WRITER<lb />
This week the newsroom has been abuzz discussing<lb />
how long one should wait before they sleep with some-<lb />
one else, as prompted by Wednesday's "Just Ask Jane"<lb />
question. And, it's safe to say that I'm in full agreement<lb />
with Jane and I don't think, under any circumstance,<lb />
that one should plan to have sex on the first date, even<lb />
though I know it happens.<lb />
OK, so I think most people can agree - no sex on<lb />
the first meeting or date. That's simple enough. But,<lb />
when is the right time to hit the sheets? There's no<lb />
right or wrong answer hereYes, there are moral and<lb />
religious issues that come up for many people, and that's<lb />
completely respectable, but what about for those people<lb />
who don't have those kinds of holdbacks?<lb />
Here in the East Carolinian we've come across the<lb />
idea of waiting 30 hours before getting down and dirty.<lb />
So you might think we're crazy, equating a number<lb />
with how long you should wait before taking it to the<lb />
next level, but let's just ponder the idea for the fun of it.<lb />
Here goes: You have to spend 30 hours with<lb />
someone before sleeping with them. It can be any-<lb />
thing from going to dinner, the movies or even th.<lb />
mall. As long as it's "getting to know you time"<lb />
instead of "getting up close and personal" time.<lb />
And, the idea makes sense - if you're actually look-<lb />
ing to enter into a meaningful relationship with the<lb />
other person that is. Jumping the gun too early can make<lb />
things awkward or change the relationship into some-<lb />
thing physical, leaving behind its emotional potential.<lb />
This way, you give suitable time to building the relation-<lb />
ship up to something more before moving on.<lb />
Now onto the idea of SO hours. It can be a bit more<lb />
than you're used to, if you're not one to think before<lb />
acting. If you think about the average date lasting around<lb />
three hours, you'd have to go on 10 dates before getting<lb />
busy. Considering most people don't go on dates back to<lb />
back, that could take the better part of a month before<lb />
you'd be sleeping with the other person. Quite the devia-<lb />
tion from the norm for many ECU students, I'm sure.<lb />
But really, what could it hurt? Spending more<lb />
time with someone, that is. Absolutely nothing.<lb />
So, instead of rushing into bed, consider spending at<lb />
least 30 hours with the other person. And, if that doesn't<lb />
seem right to you, at least take the time to create some<lb />
sort of standard. For something that has the potential<lb />
to be such a big deal between two people, don't let your<lb />
hormones get the best of you and take away from it.<lb />
And for our girl - we hope you enjoy the final 21<lb />
hours. It should all be worth it in the end.<lb />
Book buyback time<lb />
is traumatizing<lb />
Are you ready for the pain?<lb />
AARON BORREGO<lb />
OPINION WRITER<lb />
As the end of the semester approaches, one indelibly<lb />
ponders: How much can I sell my books for? Well my<lb />
friends, if you are like me, you want to get the most out<lb />
of your books that you aren't going to need anymore.<lb />
So, you are thinking that you spent $500 on books,<lb />
maybe you can get about 200 bucks back for those bad boys,<lb />
or maybe even more? Wrong. Think again kids; it's time<lb />
to learn a lesson on being taken for what you are worth.<lb />
As students at a university, you would think we might<lb />
get a break from the rising costs of schooling. Rising<lb />
tuition, book costs, parking permits, library dues, gas<lb />
prices, food prices, student fees, rent and overall cost of<lb />
living has made being a student harder than it should be.<lb />
Honestly, what is next? Taxing students for walk-<lb />
ing across campus? Or perhaps just charging people<lb />
to use the bathrooms in the buildings? I know, a per<lb />
word service charge for reading books, signs, maps or<lb />
newspapers from the creators of the materials.<lb />
What I'm really getting at is how the book manu-<lb />
facturers take students hostage by our wallets knowing<lb />
we have to get these books. Rising costs include very<lb />
little, if any real new material in these books.<lb />
I have seen many books that are completely new.<lb />
These books are mainly in the realm of the technology<lb />
sector. Therefore, I am mainly concerning my scorn<lb />
toward inactive topics and areas.<lb />
As an example of this, let us try to look at say, West-<lb />
ern Civilization. Well, there are no new examples of how<lb />
to do a problem in math. There are not any relevant dis-<lb />
coveries happening everyday as in computer technology.<lb />
There may be new discoveries of artifacts, but noth-<lb />
ing that would suggest a world-changing find such as<lb />
the knowledge that the Romans knew the answer to the<lb />
question of why we are here. So, what else is there?<lb />
There are new diagrams and a few new lines about<lb />
how the origins of bubble gum and hair braids started<lb />
with some previously unknown culture in Antarctica. I<lb />
really just feel that the people who make the books are<lb />
just trying to make too much money.<lb />
Even having said that, our school and teachers are<lb />
requiring "new" books to be used every semester. Why can't<lb />
there be any kind of relief to end the crafty wielding of our<lb />
money? There is only one reason: Money is everything.<lb />
There is no money in keeping a seemingly good<lb />
book in bookstores to be sold at used book prices. It is<lb />
just like how there is no money in curing disease, there<lb />
is only money in treating aliments.<lb />
For heaven's sake, we as a race of human beings are<lb />
talking about sending people to Mars. Now I under-<lb />
stand that book selling is only near the level of physics<lb />
required to send a metal bubble through space to another<lb />
neighboring planet, but why is it so hard to understand?<lb />
I just want to point out Web sites such as eBay and<lb />
half.com as alternatives. These Web sites and many<lb />
others offer books that are searchable by all sorts of fields.<lb />
The drawback is the wait for delivery, but since we sign<lb />
up for classes well beforehand, we can plan accordingly.<lb />
Even alternative bookstores are starting to pop up<lb />
around Greenville and might provide another cheaper<lb />
alternative to overpriced campus stores. I imagine that<lb />
the bookstores might have something to do with this<lb />
overcharge, but I wouldn't accuse our bookstores of<lb />
such a travesty.<lb />
I do hope some other people are as upset now, at<lb />
book-selling time, as I am about the ridiculous prices that<lb />
we pay for our education. The price for higher learning<lb />
shouldn't begetting higher for students across the nation.<lb />
If enough people look to alternatives across the<lb />

JUST ASK JANE<lb />
Need advice? Want answers? Just ask Jane.<lb />
Dear Jane,<lb />
I've found the love of my life and I'm getting to<lb />
the point where I want to ask her to marry me. The<lb />
problem is that I have herpes and I don't know how<lb />
to tell her. We've not slept together yet and I really<lb />
don't want to turn her away from me for something<lb />
that 1 can't do anything about. I know herpes isn't<lb />
sexy, but I really do love this girl.<lb />
Signed,<lb />
Ill-fated and in love<lb />
Dear In Love,<lb />
I'll admit, yours is a difficult question to answer.<lb />
Since you have decided you've met the love of your<lb />
life, and you're thinking about marriage, I'm guess-<lb />
ing it's safe to assume you've been in this relationship<lb />
for a while. You've (hopefully) learned to trust this<lb />
Sarah Bell<lb />
Editor in Chief<lb />
person, and vice versa, but what you need to tell her<lb />
about your sexual health is going to make her ques-<lb />
tion that trust. Although she will be relieved that you<lb />
are being forthcoming with her now, she will wonder<lb />
why you put off telling her for this long, especially<lb />
something that will affect her life too.<lb />
Before you even broach the subject with Miss<lb />
Marriage Material, I'd recommend talking to your<lb />
doctor first. Your physician will be able to advise you<lb />
about what specific precautions you and your girl<lb />
need to take to make sure you both stay healthy, and<lb />
having the information fresh in your mind will help<lb />
you answer your girlfriend's inevitable questions.<lb />
As far as starting that conversation goes,<lb />
be brave and explain everything as much as she<lb />
needs. Be forewarned - she may freak out. No<lb />
matter how she reacts, she may need some time<lb />
to fully trust you again, but she'll be glad you<lb />
told her. Undoubtedly, facing facts together will<lb />
make your relationship stronger in the long run.<lb />

ALEX LAROCCA<lb />
OPINION WRITER<lb />
The Iraq war has been going on for three years'<lb />
under the invasion plans of the UK and the US. Now<lb />
with those three years going with no hope of an exit or<lb />
a solution, the Neo-Con rhetoric of "stay the course" is<lb />
losing its foothold in the American public and the war<lb />
is becoming an everyday apathy.<lb />
The next task on the American people's mind is a<lb />
solution to the Iraq war. Unfortunately, most people<lb />
cannot accept the fact that there will be no solution and<lb />
this puts much pressure on the newly elected Democrats.<lb />
Many arguments about the recent elections and solutions<lb />
for Iraq need to review certain facts that shed a morbid<lb />
light on the situation.<lb />
I have been reading some interesting comments<lb />
in the East Carolinian such as that the Democrat's<lb />
first act in Congress was to increase spending by<lb />
$58 billion and that the Democrats are gloating. I<lb />
would like to keep hearing about what the Demo-<lb />
crats are doing in office right now especially since<lb />
the newly elected officials have yet to take office.<lb />
So now, it has come time for the Democrats. The Iraq<lb />
the Democrats are coming into is worse than when it<lb />
was part of the so-called "Axis of Evil With no secure<lb />
national defense system, the country has become a safe<lb />
haven for discriminatory terrorists, such as for the, now<lb />
dead, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, whose mission was to<lb />
slaughter Shia Muslims.<lb />
The problems of Iraq are rooted in an ideology,<lb />
which we do not understand in our culture. Our pres-<lb />
ence in Iraq just simply means we are another enemy<lb />
of the various terrorist organizations that are there.<lb />
If we were to leave Iraq in a year, the organizations<lb />
that want control will fight under their banner of<lb />
ideology and kill those who they deem worthy. If we<lb />
stay and try to "fix" our mistake, the organizations,<lb />
which want control will fight under their banner<lb />
of ideology and kill those who they deem worthy.<lb />
When America was involved in Vietnam, it realized<lb />
that it had put itself into a situation it couldn't win in<lb />
the end. Our solution back then was to pull out and wipe<lb />
our hands clean. The outcome was the communist north<lb />
taking power and around 1,000,000 civilian deaths. If<lb />
history can teach us anything it is that we need to perfect<lb />
our faulty military and political strategies before we have<lb />
to fix yet another mess.<lb />
So America is left having to fund the Iraq war, includ-<lb />
ing things such as Iraq police uniforms, Iraqi guns and our<lb />
own military. Is it so odd then for the Democrats to want<lb />
to raise the spending? The war is a drain on our society<lb />
but we are stuck in it and have to repair it best we can.<lb />
Beyond giving out guns to "protect" themselves,<lb />
a new solution of dividing Iraq into specific cultural<lb />
boundaries is just as asinine. The Middle East already<lb />
owes its countries idiotic boundaries to the West. This<lb />
caused a maze of problems, which we are still dealing<lb />
with today. Yet, our best solution so far is to divide it up<lb />
again? Due to racism in the US, should we divide into a<lb />
Mexican territory, a Black territory and so on? This is<lb />
simply not a realistic long-term solution.<lb />
Then what are some solutions? Well I believe that<lb />
we are left with something that will scar the country for<lb />
decades to come just as Vietnam did. The newly elected<lb />
Congress along with the president will try to jade the<lb />
American people with apparent solutions. What every-<lb />
one needs to understand and accept is that no matter<lb />
what the government and military come up with, it is<lb />
simply a band-aid on a broken leg.<lb />
With the mess left by Bush and the mighty Neo-Cons, <lb />
the American people must now rest their hopes in the<lb />
Democrats and the hope that one day America can uphold<lb />
its reputation again as the greatest country in the world.<lb />

Historic ballet comes to eastern North Carolina<lb />
Nutcracker ballet<lb />

KORRI-LEE SMITH<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
In regards to the upcoming<lb />
holiday season, I feel it is safe to<lb />
say that the majority of you have<lb />
at least heard of The Nutcracker,<lb />
regardless of whether you're ballet<lb />
fans. For the few of you already<lb />
scratching your heads, I feel<lb />
it is important that I take the time<lb />
to fill you in.<lb />
For over 100 years now, The<lb />
Nutcrackerballet has been attract-<lb />
ing audiences everywhere. This<lb />
popular production was first pre-<lb />
sented at the Mayinsky Theatre in<lb />
St. Petersburg, Russia, on Dec. 17<lb />
1892. Renowned choreographer<lb />
Marius Petipa commissioned the<lb />
famous Russian composer Peter<lb />
Tchaikovsky to compose a ballet<lb />
score based on Alexandre Dumas'<lb />
adaptation of E.T.A. Hoffman's<lb />
tale, "The Nutcracker and the<lb />
Mouse King Unfortunately, the<lb />
first production was a failure;<lb />
neither critics nor the audience<lb />
found it alluring.<lb />
Luckily, this initial disap-<lb />
pointment didn't impede future<lb />
productions. In 1944, The<lb />
San Francisco Ballet Company<lb />
obtained the honor of being the<lb />
first company to perform The<lb />
Nutcracker in the United States.<lb />
William Christensen directed this<lb />
momentous production.<lb />
Over the next several years,<lb />
The Nutcracker underwent sev-<lb />
eral changes to which George<lb />
Balanchine is credited. His work<lb />
is said to have brought new life<lb />
to The Nutcracker. This enhanced<lb />
production was first created for<lb />
the New York City Ballet.<lb />
Today, Balanchine's work has<lb />
become a sort of institution in<lb />
holiday tradition. The majority<lb />
of productions done today are still<lb />
rooted in the version created by<lb />
George Balanchine.<lb />
So now that I have everyone<lb />
on the same page, I can share<lb />
some good news. Clara, Herr<lb />
Drosselmeyer, Mouse King, the<lb />
Nutcracker Prince and the beau-<lb />
tiful Sugar Plum Fairy will all be<lb />
taking the stage this December<lb />
on the campus of ECU. Tchai-<lb />

brought to life in three perfor-<lb />

the community with the Eastern<lb />
Symphony Orchestra for this<lb />
spectacular production. The group<lb />
will be under the direction of Jorge<lb />
Richter. Artistic Director of Dance<lb />
Arts Theatre, Sherryl Tipton, has<lb />
coordinated the event.<lb />

Don't waste your $7.50<lb />
AARON BORREGO<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
The movie Stranger than Fiction is a feature film<lb />
starring Will Ferrell, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Dustin<lb />
Hoffman, Queen Latifah and Emma Thompson.<lb />
While being very star heavy, this movie lacks any<lb />
true direction apart from the obvious and has a ter-<lb />
rible plot.<lb />
Another terrible thing about the movie isthewaythat<lb />
it drags on. This film seems to last an eternity due to its<lb />
subdued undertones of humor beneath a heavy storyline.<lb />
Stating that the plot and movie are terrible is an<lb />
understatement. However, the actors involved do act<lb />
their parts well. That is the only thing saving this one<lb />
from being a box office refund candidate.<lb />
Ferrell is finally stepping away from the just plain<lb />
stupid comedies that kept us all laughing in the past<lb />
into a more dramatic performance, which he manages<lb />
to pull off.<lb />
Do not be fooled by the really good commercials<lb />
and trailers for this movie. They make the movie out<lb />
to be what it isn't - entertaining. The entire point of<lb />
the approximately two-hour movie can be summed<lb />
up in a few sentences.<lb />
Will Ferrell is a lonely, tired, detached man with a<lb />
severe case of OCD who works for the I.R.S. His life is<lb />
dictated by psychobabble from writer Thompson who<lb />
is facing a mental block, a serious smoking addiction<lb />
and an acute form of paranoia.<lb />
His life is meaningless until he meets and falls<lb />
in love with rebellious, opinionated and visually<lb />
repulsive Gyllenhaal. But his character is too slow to<lb />
know it until the eccentric, intelligent and insightful<lb />
professor Hoffman lets him into the know.<lb />
The one thing that could have saved the movie<lb />
was the ending. The original ending would have<lb />
been death at the end of this story, but instead an<lb />
alternate ending is formulated to bring a conclusion<lb />
to the movie.<lb />
Happy endings are great and all, but even in the<lb />
movie, the ending to the story is discussed. To be a<lb />
great and poetic ending, Ferrell needed to die. I was<lb />
hoping this was the case just so the movie would<lb />
end soon.<lb />
Even in reality, if he would have died, the story<lb />
Dustin Hoffman offers Will Ferrell some advice in<lb />
Stranger than Fiction.<lb />
would have been much better than the alternate<lb />
ending which leaves the ending of the story a bit flac-<lb />
cid. The overall concept of the movie's plot is great,<lb />
but the execution of it was flawed.<lb />
Overall, this movie gets a D for its waste of a<lb />
great idea, terrible plot development and horrible<lb />
utilization of characters.<lb />

Penguins provide a toe-tapping good time<lb />
Happy Feet will leave you with a smile on your face and a tune in your head<lb />
'Happy Feet'<lb />
sure to please<lb />
SARAH CAMPBELL<lb />
FEATURES EDITOR<lb />
If you are in the mood for<lb />
some light-hearted fun as a<lb />
distraction to sooth your stress<lb />
from impending final exams then<lb />
the perfect solution may be just<lb />
a short drive away. The release<lb />
of the new movie Happy Feet<lb />
has people everywhere tapping<lb />
their toes to the infectious music<lb />
and people left in amazement<lb />
after various dance sequences<lb />
performed by none other than<lb />
penguins themselves.<lb />
Often animated features are<lb />
primary voiced by nameless C-<lb />
list stars, but not Happy Feet. For<lb />
those of you who want to see a<lb />
movie with an all-star cast look<lb />
no further. The likes of Elijah<lb />
Wood, Nicole Kidman, Huge<lb />
Jackman, Robin Williams and<lb />
Brittany Murphy all lend their<lb />
voices to bring to life these preco-<lb />
cious penguins.<lb />
The premise behind the movie<lb />
is that when baby penguin Mumble<lb />
is born he instantly takes to tap<lb />
dancing, which doesn't sit well<lb />
with the other penguins consid-<lb />
ering that fact that penguins are<lb />
bred to sing not dance. In fact, it<lb />
seems evident that he is the first<lb />
tap dancing penguin. After he<lb />
begins his education his teacher<lb />
insists that he can sing. He argues<lb />
otherwise, and believe me you'll<lb />
take his side on this debate. This<lb />
poor penguin can't carry a tune to<lb />
save his life. However, being able<lb />
to sing is essential to him find-<lb />
ing his "heartsong" and in turn<lb />
finding his mate. Throughout<lb />
the movie Mumble struggles to<lb />
find a way to fit in, but in the end<lb />
standing out may be the main<lb />
source of his redemption.<lb />

Something old,<lb />
something new<lb />
10 albums you<lb />
should hear<lb />
JOHN BOSCO<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
While it's still too early in the year to go into my<lb />
picks for the top 10 albums of 2006, as we're getting<lb />
in gear for the holiday season that's fast approaching,<lb />
I thought it'd be timely for some sort of a list.<lb />
And what better than a list of 10 albums everyone<lb />
should at least, in my opinion, be exposed to and give<lb />
a good listen to?<lb />
I'm not claiming that these are the greatest albums<lb />
of all time (though, true, many of them may rank<lb />
high on that list, too). They're just, in no particular<lb />
order, 10 albums that I've learned to love, and albums<lb />
that I'd want to tell my friends about if they've never<lb />
heard them.<lb />
1. The White Album-The Beatles: While most<lb />
people say Revolver is The Beatles album that started<lb />
their experimentation with sound and opened up<lb />
what they'd develop on later albums, in my opinion, it<lb />
doesn't matter. This album is two discs worth of raw<lb />
experimental, psychedelic songs that hit hard.<lb />
2. Blonde on Blonde - Bob Dylan: This is my<lb />
personal favorite Dylan album because every single<lb />
song is my "favorite Dylan song" at some point. If<lb />
you've never heard any of his stuff and are trying to<lb />
jump into the thick of Dylan, this has it all; love songs,<lb />
word play, mind-bending harmonica riffs, etc.<lb />
3. Born to Run - Bruce Springsteen: From the<lb />
first track to the last, Springsteen delivers it all on this<lb />
album. He develops elaborate musical arrangements<lb />
and showcases his insane lyrical delivery on songs like<lb />
"Thunder Road "Born to Run" and "Backstreets<lb />
4. Grace - Jeff Buckley: The only full-length<lb />
album Buckley lived to see made, Grace show-<lb />
cases the young musician's vocal ability and what<lb />
could have been.<lb />
5. Murmur - R.E.M: Just listen to this album<lb />
and remember that it was made 16 years ago. Way<lb />
ahead of their time, R.E.M. paved the way for tons of<lb />
today's indie music.<lb />
6. Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness- The<lb />
Smashing Pumpkins: Siamese Dream is a great<lb />
album, but this one is two discs of Corgan's genius.<lb />
It's that simple.<lb />
7. A Ghost is Born - Wilco: If you don't know<lb />
who Jeff Tweedy is, it's about time you learned. Argu-<lb />
ably one of the best songwriters of our time, Tweedy's<lb />
Grammy-winning A Ghost is Born lives up to the hype,<lb />
lyrically and musically.<lb />
8. Daydream Nation - Sonic Youth: This<lb />
album is definition of post-punk, art-rock and fans of<lb />
almost every kind of rock music can find something<lb />

to love in this album - from the<lb />
intricate guitar work toThurston<lb />

tronic, artistic, profound and<lb />
really, really good. Every album<lb />
Radiohead kicks it up a notch and<lb />
front man Thorn Yorke prove<lb />

10. Pink Moon - Nick<lb />
Drake: Drake's final album,<lb />
and widely considered his<lb />
masterpiece is stripped down to<lb />
its bare essentials: A guitar and<lb />
his voice. Even more impressive<lb />
about the peaceful, crisp and<lb />
creative sound on this album<lb />
is that it only took him two<lb />
nights to record.<lb />

FEET<lb />
continued from A6<lb />
This movie is not only a<lb />
heartwarming tale of a penguin;<lb />
it is also packed with tons of<lb />
laughs. There was hardly a time<lb />
throughout the movie when a<lb />
smile wasn't on my face. Wil-<lb />
liams kept the laughs coming<lb />
with his portrayal of two pen-<lb />
guins, Ramon and Lovelace.<lb />
Despite the lighthearted<lb />
nature of this film, there were<lb />
some real environmental issues I<lb />
incorporated into the plot. The<lb />
fact that fisherman are catch-<lb />
ing many of the fish that pen-<lb />
guins depend on for survival was<lb />
brought to the forefront. Also,<lb />
the issues of global warming<lb />
found a way to creep in.<lb />
Another great part about<lb />
this movie is the stellar music<lb />
throughout its entirety. Kidman<lb />
and l.i. I.id.in belted out Prince's<lb />
"Kiss while Murphy gave a<lb />
phenomenal rendition of (Queen's<lb />
Somebody to Love The<lb />
music throughout Happy Feel<lb />
made me not only want to sing<lb />
along, but jump to my feet<lb />
and bust a move.<lb />
I expect that this movie will<lb />
still be playing in homes for<lb />
years to come and will become<lb />
a classic among children and<lb />
adults alike. I recommend Happy<lb />
Feel for anyone who is looking<lb />
for a carefree way to spend an<lb />
afternoon enjoying a movie with<lb />
a great plot that is jam packed<lb />
with comedic relief.<lb />
Just don't forget to grab your<lb />

Men's basketball hits the<lb />
road to take on Liberty<lb />
Pirates looking for<lb />
second road win<lb />
RON CLEMENTS<lb />
SENIOR WRITER<lb />
The 4-1 ECU basketball team<lb />
will head to Lynchburg, Va. Saturday<lb />
evening to take on the Liberty Flames.<lb />
Both teams are riding a three-<lb />
game win streak. ECU has won<lb />
three straight since an overtime loss<lb />
at Richmond. Since then, the Pirates<lb />
have won at UNC Greensboro and<lb />
have home wins over Division II<lb />
foes Limestone and North Carolina<lb />
Central.<lb />
Liberty's schedule is not much<lb />
better. After a season-opening 74-48<lb />
loss at Oklahoma, the Flames have<lb />
home wins over Cincinnati Christian,<lb />
Houghton and Southern Virginia.<lb />
Liberty has scored more than<lb />
100 points in two of those wins and<lb />
has three players averaging double<lb />
digits in scoring, including senior<lb />
guard Larry Blair.<lb />
Blair averaged nearly 23 points<lb />
a game last season, and is right<lb />
at the clip this year through four<lb />
games. Blair ranks seventh all-<lb />
time on the Big South scoring<lb />
list and is third in school history.<lb />
Anthony Smith, a 6-4 sopho-<lb />
more from Piano, Tex is averaging<lb />
13 points per game while 6-foot-8<lb />
junior forward Alex McLean scores<lb />
nearly 18 points per game and leads<lb />
the team with 10 rebounds for every<lb />
outing.<lb />
The Pirates have two players<lb />
that are solid double-digit scor-<lb />
ers in guards Darrell Jenkins and<lb />
Courtney Captain. Jenkins, a 5-11<lb />
junior transfer, is averaging 15<lb />
points to lead the team and the<lb />
point guard also averages seven<lb />
assists per game. Captain, who led<lb />
the Pirates in scoring at Richmond<lb />
and against N.C. Central, is averag-<lb />
ing just over 13 points per contest.<lb />
ECU hasn't lost to Liberty in<lb />
five meetings, including an 80-50<lb />
drubbing of the Flames the last time<lb />
"The best thing about<lb />
this team is we only have<lb />
one senior so the<lb />
future is bright for<lb />
these young guys<lb />
RICKY STOKES<lb />
ECU HEAD COACH<lb />
the two teams met in 1998. If the<lb />
Pirates want to continue that streak,<lb />
they will have to keep McLean<lb />
from pounding the glass. That<lb />
responsibility falls on the shoulders<lb />
of ECU's big freshmen trio of Gabe<lb />
Blair, John Fields and Justin Ramsey.<lb />
The (i-fbot-8 Blair had a season-<lb />
high 15 rebounds in the loss to Rich-<lb />
mond and leads the team with eight<lb />
rebounds per game. Ramsey has<lb />
13 rebounds in 46 minutes of play<lb />
this season and Fields has ripped<lb />
off 18 from the glass while averag-<lb />
ing almost 10 points per game.<lb />
The biggest thing Fields brings<lb />
to the table for the Pirates is his<lb />
natural shot-blocking ability. With<lb />
his 6-foot-9 frame, long arms and<lb />
instincts, Fields has blocked 20 shots<lb />
through five games and has nearly<lb />
triple the amount of blocked shots<lb />
that Liberty has as a team.<lb />
"I came here to rebound and<lb />
play defense said Fields follow-<lb />
ing the win over NCCU. "I feel<lb />
like I am maturing as a player<lb />
offensively. Now I feel like I'm<lb />
adding a scoring threat to my game<lb />
The game will be a litmus test<lb />
for both teams, who have played<lb />
fairly easy schedules apart from their<lb />
one loss. Liberty is coming off a 7-23<lb />
campaign in Randy Dunton's fifth<lb />
season as head coach. ECU went 8-<lb />
20 a year ago, but both teams have a<lb />
lot of new inexperienced players that<lb />
should continue to get better.<lb />
"The best thing about this team<lb />
is we only have one senior so the<lb />
future is bright for these young guys<lb />
said ECU head coach Ricky Stokes.<lb />
The game is ECU's last out-<lb />

ECU Baseball team inks 11 recruits in early signing period<lb />
(SID) Eight high school<lb />
seniors, two junior college players<lb />
and a pitcher from Puerto Rico<lb />
have signed early national letters-<lb />
of-intent to play baseball at ECU<lb />
in 2008, Head Coach Billy Godwin<lb />
announced recently.<lb />
"I am real excited about the<lb />
talent that we have pulled together<lb />
for this recruiting class said<lb />
Godwin. "Each of these players has<lb />
the ability to step in and compete<lb />
at the highest level and help us<lb />
reach our goal of getting to the<lb />
College World Series in Omaha<lb />
The junior college transfers<lb />
inked are Derrick Conatser, Rigo-<lb />
berto Lugo and Daniel Holder.<lb />
Conatser (RHP, 6-1, 180) will<lb />

Steelers' Cowher has no<lb />
interest in N.C. State job<lb />
(AP) Bill Cowher is not<lb />
interested in coaching alma<lb />
mater N.C. State, even though<lb />
the Super Bowl-winning Pitts-<lb />
burgh Steelers coach has only<lb />
one season left on his contract.<lb />
Cowher, a former N.C. State<lb />
linebacker, has seen his name men-<lb />
tioned prominently in speculation<lb />
since Wolfpack coach Chuck Amato<lb />
was fired last weekend.<lb />
Asked if he had any interest in<lb />
going back to his former school,<lb />
Cowher said, "No<lb />
"I've been getting a lot<lb />
of contacts about it; I've heard<lb />
about it Cowher said Wednes-<lb />
day. "But I've got a job here<lb />
Cowher and his family bought<lb />
a luxury home in Raleigh, N.C,<lb />
less than a year ago, adding to<lb />
the rumors he might be ready to<lb />
leave Pittsburgh. Cowher's wife<lb />
and youngest daughter are living<lb />
in Raleigh this season, while his<lb />
other two daughters are attending<lb />
Princeton University.<lb />
"I'm very flattered to hear some<lb />
of the things that have been coming<lb />
out, but I'm not a candidate Cowher<lb />
said. "I have a job here and my focus<lb />
really is on this job right here, so you<lb />
can take me off the list<lb />
Cowher did not suggest any<lb />
possible replacements for Amato,<lb />
who had a 49-37 record while lead-<lb />

(SID) The league office<lb />
announced its 2006 Media Players<lb />
of the Year, Coach of the Year and<lb />
Freshmen of the Year Wednesday,<lb />
as selected by a panel of media<lb />
members in each conference city.<lb />
Houston senior quarterback<lb />
Kevin Kolb was named Offensive<lb />
Player of the Year. He has com-<lb />
pleted 68.2 percent (247-of-362)<lb />
of his passes for 3,165 yards and<lb />
25 touchdowns with just three<lb />
interceptions. His yardage total<lb />
is second in Conference USA and<lb />
his TD total ranks third, while his<lb />
interception is the second-lowest<lb />
of any Division I-A player. Kolb<lb />
has started all 48 games of his<lb />
collegiate career, more than any<lb />
I-A quarterback and is C-USA's<lb />
all-time leader in total offense with<lb />
13,109 yards.<lb />
Defensive honors went to Mar-<lb />
shall sophomore defensive end<lb />
Albert McClellan. A first team All-<lb />
Conference USA selection, McClel-<lb />
lan leads C-USA in sacks with 11.5,<lb />
in tackles for loss with 19 and ranks<lb />
second in forced fumbles with four.<lb />
He has been credited with 77 total<lb />
tackles and turned in his top per-<lb />
formance of the season in a loss at<lb />
ECU on Nov. 11 when he registered<lb />
nine tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss,<lb />
3.5 sacks and forced two fumbles.<lb />
The Special Teams Player of<lb />
the Year award went to UTEP<lb />
senior punt returnerkicker<lb />
returner Johnnie Lee Higgins.<lb />
He has returned two punts for<lb />
touchdowns, tied for second-most<lb />
in a season in C-USA history. As<lb />
a kick returner, Higgins averaged<lb />
15.3 yards on 18 returns. He earned<lb />
first team All-Conference honors as<lb />
a wide receiver and punt returner.<lb />
Redshirt freshman QB Justin .<lb />
Willis of SMU was named the<lb />
league's Freshman of the Year. He<lb />
re-wrote the Mustangs single-<lb />
season passing records during his<lb />
first year on the Hilltop, setting a<lb />
new school record for touchdown<lb />
passes with a league-high-tying<lb />
26. For the year, he completed 182-<lb />
of-270 for 2,047 yards and just six<lb />
interceptions, ranking 10th in the<lb />
nation in passing efficiency.<lb />
Rice's first-year head coach<lb />
Todd Graham was named the C-<lb />
USA Coach of the Year. The former<lb />
Tulsa defensive coordinator led his<lb />
team to the largest improvement in<lb />
Division I-A this season.<lb />
Graham took over the reigns<lb />
of the Rice football program on<lb />
Jan. 1 and less than one year<lb />
later transformed a team that<lb />
finished 1-10 last season into a<lb />
squad that will play in the school's'<lb />
first bowl game in 45 years. On<lb />
Dec. 22, the Owls will play in<lb />
the R&L Carriers New Orleans<lb />
Bowl, ending the second-longest<lb />
bowl drought in college football.<lb />
Rice will enter its bowl game<lb />
on a six-game winning streak, the<lb />
longest in C-USA. After open-<lb />
ing the season at 0-4 and dealing<lb />
with the tragic death of freshman<lb />
defensive back Dale Lloyd on Sept.<lb />
24, the Owls posted an emotional<lb />
48-14 victory at Army on Sept. 30.<lb />
Following a loss at Tulane on Oct.<lb />
7, Rice has not lost a football game,<lb />
including posting three victories on<lb />
its final offensive play.<lb />
TODl) GRAHAM<lb />
After being picked to finish in<lb />
last place in the West Division, the<lb />
Owls finished in second place with a<lb />
6-2 league ledger. Only a one-point<lb />
loss on opening day against Houston<lb />
prohibited the Owls from playing in<lb />
the C-USA Championship game.<lb />
This is the second year in a row<lb />
that the C-USA Coach of the Year<lb />
has engineered the largest regular<lb />
season turnaround in Division I-A,<lb />
as UCF's George O'Leary accom-<lb />
plished the feat last season.<lb />
