Construction on Geriatric<lb />
Center to begin in near future<lb />
University receives<lb />
funding from Pitt<lb />
County local<lb />
RYAN COBEY<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
University affiliates yesterday<lb />
announced the receiving of a $2.5<lb />
million gift for the building of a<lb />
geriatric center on ECU's Health<lb />
Science campus.<lb />
The substantial gift was given<lb />
by Frances Monk, a local resident<lb />
of Farmville, who died in June at<lb />
the age of 87. Chancellor Steve<lb />
Ballard was among the many<lb />
university officials who gave their<lb />
thanks and spoke of future plans<lb />
for the geriatric center at the local<lb />
announcement conference.<lb />
"We are grateful to Mrs.<lb />
Monk for sharing with us her<lb />
vision for this center said Chan-<lb />
cellor Ballard.<lb />
According to the U.S. Depart-<lb />
ment of Health and Human Ser-<lb />
vices, the number of Americans over<lb />
the age of 65 has increased by 102<lb />
percent in just a decade. Dr. Ken-<lb />
neth Steinweg, director of the Geri-<lb />
atric Division in the Department of<lb />
Family Medicine, believes that the<lb />
number of elderly citizens is still on<lb />
the rise, especially in Pitt County.<lb />
The new Frances J. and Robert<lb />
T. Monk Sr. Geriatric Center will<lb />
"triple our capacity to care for old<lb />
folks with medical needs, and serve<lb />
all of eastern North Carolina said<lb />
Dr. Steinweg.<lb />
The facility not only will be<lb />
geared toward the treatment of<lb />
elderly individuals, but will also<lb />
be used to research and educate<lb />
ECU medical students on the<lb />
basics of geriatric care. Some of<lb />
the more prominent topics stu-<lb />
dents will be taught are chronic<lb />
disease management and preven-<lb />
tion of diseases such as osteopo-<lb />
rosis and cancer.<lb />
"Every student will get<lb />
some outpatient geriatric train-<lb />
ing said Dr. Steinweg.<lb />
Currently, only select medical<lb />
professionals have the opportu-<lb />
nity to delve into the practice of<lb />
elderly care through the Brody<lb />
School of Medicine, but the new<lb />
geriatric center will open up an<lb />
entirely new range of options and<lb />
experiences tor students. Chancel-<lb />
lor Ballard said once operational,<lb />
the facility will not only help the<lb />
university bring in more medical<lb />
students, "but most importantly<lb />
help us to train the students that we<lb />

ECU participates in Geographic<lb />
Information Science Day<lb />
Event teachs students<lb />
about GIS technology<lb />
ADELINE TRENTO<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
ECU's Center for Geographic<lb />
Information Science hosted Geo-<lb />
graphic Information System Day,<lb />
a global event that celebrates GIS<lb />
technology.<lb />
GIS Day, which took place<lb />
yesterday, Nov. 15, celebrated<lb />
the computer-based technology<lb />
that is used to turn database<lb />
information about a location into<lb />
a visual map.<lb />
"The purpose of GIS Day is<lb />
to share information about this<lb />
technology and motivate people<lb />
to learn more about GIS said<lb />
Dr. Tom Allen, co-director of the<lb />
Geographic Information Science<lb />
Center.<lb />
As part of GIS Day, Allen held<lb />
a seminar for students and faculty<lb />
on "Digital Earth, Virtual Globes<lb />
and Geospatial Visualization<lb />
Allen said GIS technology is<lb />
used in many aspects of everyday<lb />
life although many people don't<lb />
realize it.<lb />
GIS technology is used by fire<lb />
trucks, patrol cars and delivery<lb />
trucks to help these vehicles<lb />
navigate streets faster and more<lb />
accurately. It is used to help busi-<lb />
nesses place ATM's as well as<lb />
public facilities in more effective<lb />
places, and this technology allows<lb />
people to download maps on the<lb />
Internet.<lb />
GIS technology is used to<lb />
solve problems related to land<lb />
use, business efficiency, the envi-<lb />
ronment and public safety.<lb />
"It is really an information<lb />
age and everything has a loca-<lb />
tion said Allen. "So I think it's<lb />
really important to understand<lb />
the aspect of where things come<lb />
from. GIS technology helps us to<lb />
be efficient, save resources, pro-<lb />
tect resources and live a higher<lb />
quality life<lb />
GIS Day helps educate students about technology and encourage usage.<lb />
At the demonstration students<lb />
learned about Google Earth, a<lb />
type of virtual globe software<lb />
that allows users to zoom in on<lb />
any location in the world and<lb />
view aerial photographs of that<lb />
area. Allen believes that this<lb />
technology may be very useful to<lb />
people in completing mundane,<lb />
everyday tasks.<lb />
"There are a lot of regular<lb />
uses for it said Allen. "If you're<lb />
interested in living somewhere or<lb />
buying a home, you can see the<lb />
area from the air before you visit<lb />
it. If you're interested in going on<lb />
vacation you can see where the<lb />
hotels are and what the place is<lb />
like. There's a huge database, you<lb />
can find things. There is a cru-<lb />
cial application for this software,<lb />
that's why they built it<lb />
Allen also demonstrated soft-<lb />
ware that allows users to see the<lb />
world on a 3D level. These types of<lb />
programs let users see movies and<lb />
3D flybys of places on the earth.<lb />
Allen said these programs are<lb />
used by the military to simulate<lb />
situations. This software allows<lb />
fighter pilots to simulate a flight<lb />
before they actually take off, and<lb />
it can be used to plan military<lb />
checkpoints and to decide how to<lb />
operate them.<lb />
Industries also use these<lb />
programs to determine the best<lb />
routes for delivery and locations<lb />
for facilities.<lb />
"GIS is definitely a large<lb />
area, that encompasses a lot<lb />
and is always in our lives said<lb />
Allen. "It is rated in the top<lb />
three emerging growth sectors<lb />
because it is constantly growing<lb />
and improving<lb />

ECU will now be able to train future dentists at the approved dental school.<lb />
Board of Governors<lb />
approves program<lb />
ZACK HILL<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
The proposed dental school<lb />
for ECU got a big boost last week<lb />
when the Board of Governor's for<lb />
North Carolina's 16 universities<lb />
approved a proposal to add the<lb />
$87-90 million institution to its<lb />
budget for this year.<lb />
John Durham, executive<lb />
director of university commu-<lb />
nications, said that the vote<lb />
gives ECU "formal and official<lb />
approval" to establish the doctor<lb />
of dental surgery program.<lb />
"Now we need the money for<lb />
constructing the building, find-<lb />
ing the staff and getting the pro-<lb />
gram running said Durham.<lb />
Gregory Chadwick, asso-<lb />
ciate vice chancellor for oral<lb />
health. Said that the need for a<lb />
dental school at ECU is all the<lb />
more pressing because of North<lb />
Carolina's lack of dentists.<lb />
"We rank 47th in the nation<lb />
when looking at the ratio of<lb />
dentists to population and that<lb />
problem is even worse in rural<lb />
areas said Chadwick.<lb />
The proposed dental program<lb />
at ECU would differ from the one<lb />
in Chapel Hill, the only other<lb />
dentistry program in the state, in<lb />
that it would take a "community<lb />
based approach according to<lb />
Chadwick.<lb />
10 sites would be set up in<lb />
rural parts of the state, where<lb />
seniors in the doctorate program<lb />
would serve in the community<lb />
rather than solely on campus, as<lb />
is the case with most other dental<lb />
schools around the country.<lb />
Durham pointed out that<lb />
there are four counties in the<lb />
eastern part of the state with no<lb />
dentists at all.<lb />
"The bottom line is that if<lb />
we are going to be educating<lb />
more dentists, they need to go<lb />
to the areas of greatest need<lb />
Chadwick said.<lb />
The proposal approved by<lb />
the Board of Governors is part<lb />
of a joint venture with UNC-<lb />
CH, which would also bring over<lb />
$100 million to that school to<lb />
expand and renovate its current<lb />
facilities.<lb />
Chadwick said that about<lb />
$48 million at ECU would go to<lb />
constructing the building that<lb />
would house the dental school,<lb />
while about $30 million would<lb />
go to constructing the 10 satel-<lb />
lite sites.<lb />
The ECU dental school would<lb />
have about 50 students per class<lb />
in the four-year program.<lb />
Both Durham and Chadwick<lb />
said that it would be several years<lb />
before the first class would be<lb />
enrolled.<lb />
"We're looking at 2010<lb />
Chadwick said.<lb />
The North Carolina Gen-<lb />
eral Assembly goes into ses-<lb />
sion beginning in January, with<lb />
the state budget usually being<lb />
approved near the end of the ses-<lb />
sion in midsummer.<lb />

School of Communication<lb />
welcomes Bernd Debusmann<lb />
Journalist speaks<lb />
about differences in<lb />
international media<lb />
ELISA BIZZOTTO<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
German reporter Bernd<lb />
Debusmann was invited by Dr.<lb />
Cindy Elmore of the School of<lb />
Communication to speak about<lb />
the differences in the approaches<lb />
and perspectives of American<lb />
media to foreign media<lb />
Yesterday at 10 a.m Debus-<lb />
mann spoke to SOI' faculty and<lb />
students in the Mendenhall Great<lb />
Rooms about his experience<lb />
reporting in over 100 countries<lb />
and the insight he has gained<lb />
from his forty years of work<lb />
Named Reuters news agency's<lb />
only current "special corre-<lb />
spondent" in 2005. Debusmann<lb />
discussed his perceptions of<lb />
American reporting and the dif-<lb />
ferences it contains in relation to<lb />
reporting in Europe and in the<lb />
Middle East.<lb />
Focusing on Iraq, Debusmann<lb />
explained that, "it is a story which<lb />
has shaped, and will shape percep-<lb />
tions of the U.S. around the world,<lb />
not only in the Middle East<lb />
He emphasized the gap<lb />
between how the rest of the world<lb />
sees America and how Americans<lb />
see the world.<lb />
"Much of the world knows<lb />
a lot more about you, than you<lb />
Americans know about the world;<lb />
much of the world gets interna-<lb />
tional news very different from<lb />
the international news you get<lb />
Debusmann elaborated upon<lb />
what he believes to be the two<lb />
main aspects of American report-<lb />
ing that set it apart from report-<lb />
ing elsewhere. He stated that<lb />
the first difference is America's<lb />
strong sense of patriotism and<lb />
the assumptions that Americans<lb />
possess about believing that<lb />
people want to be like them;<lb />
want to share the same values<lb />
as them.<lb />
"On the whole, and there<lb />
are always exceptions. I think<lb />
American journalists are more<lb />
patriotic thanjournalists in other<lb />
countries, and that affects the<lb />
way Americans, non-journalists<lb />
and journalists, see the world<lb />
In illustrating his point that<lb />
there is almost a fear in American<lb />
media of seeming anti-patriotic,<lb />
Debusmann explored the differ-<lb />
ences between war coverage on<lb />
American news networks, versus<lb />
European, such as the BBC, and<lb />
also versus that in the Middle<lb />
East. He said that during the first<lb />
few weeks of the war, the images<lb />
broadcasted over American tele-<lb />
visions were tanks charging<lb />
forward; very little blood and<lb />
violence, countering the images<lb />
of war victims and destruction<lb />
that was being broadcasted over<lb />
Al-Jizera television. He said that<lb />
on the BBC, and on French and<lb />
German televisions there was a<lb />
little bit of both.<lb />
Debusmann went on to dis-<lb />
cuss how even after 60 Minutes<lb />

Fayetteville area chosen as site<lb />
for census practice<lb />
(AP) A nine-county region<lb />
around Fayetteville will be one of<lb />
the nation's two test sites for census<lb />
takers gearing up for the 2010 count.<lb />
The Fayetteville area was<lb />
chosen because of its mix of<lb />
urban, suburban and rural popu-<lb />
lations and its large military<lb />
presence, said Wayne Hatcher,<lb />
director of the U.S. Census Bureau<lb />
regional office in Charlotte. The<lb />
region includes Fort Bragg, the<lb />
largest Army post on the Kast<lb />
Coast, and Pope Air Force Base.<lb />
The region is home to '29<lb />
different ethnic cultures, a<lb />
significant American Indian<lb />
population, the state's largest<lb />
Hispanic community and the state's<lb />
fifth-largest black community,<lb />
according to'2000 census statist us<lb />
Hatcher said he expects the<lb />
'2010 census to be much sim-<lb />
pler than those of past decades<lb />
because of new technology, such as<lb />
hand-held computers with global<lb />
positioning system technology<lb />
The Census Bureau is also<lb />
phasing out the long-form ques-<lb />
tionnaire that was given in previ-<lb />
ous decades to one of every six<lb />
households. In 2010, households<lb />
will get only the census' short<lb />
form, which takes about 10 min-<lb />
utes to complete.<lb />

Pink Prison Wall Experiment Fails<lb />
(KMTR) A Kansas City,<lb />

walls their original grey color after<lb />
a failed experiment.<lb />
After a Dallas County Deten-<lb />
tion Center in Buffalo painted their<lb />
walls pink in a bid to calm prisoners,<lb />
the Kansas City jail followed suit.<lb />
Scientific research has<lb />
suggested that the pink jails<lb />
make inmates less aggressive,<lb />
and jails across the country<lb />
have experimented with the idea.<lb />
However, the Kansas City Police<lb />
Department says it didn't<lb />
work for them, and inmates<lb />
will now reside in cells painted in<lb />
back-to-the basics institutional grey.<lb />

Brody sees reorganization<lb />
JANUARY<lb />
Changes make for more<lb />
efficient, effective<lb />
structure<lb />
ZACK HILL<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Several changes were<lb />
announced this week in the Health<lb />
Sciences division at ECU. The<lb />
move come as part of "an ongoing<lb />
effort to address significant finan-<lb />
cial issues at the Brody School of<lb />
Medicine said John Durham,<lb />
executive director of university<lb />
communications.<lb />
Durham said that national<lb />
factors, such as reduced fund-<lb />
ing from medicare and medicaid<lb />
and an increase in malpractice<lb />
lawsuits and insurance costs, as<lb />
well as local economic problems<lb />
from the closure of factories and<lb />
loss of employee health benefits,<lb />
have caused ECU Physicians, the<lb />
practice plan that treats patients,<lb />
to lose more than $25 million in<lb />
the last several years.<lb />
"These changes began several<lb />
months ago in series of steps to get<lb />
the practice plan back into a good<lb />
economic situation Durham said.<lb />
"We're taking a careful look at all<lb />
operations as part of an effort to<lb />
examine the way the organization<lb />
is set up<lb />
Durham said that the problems<lb />
the practice plan arecommon in med-<lb />
ical schools throughout the country.<lb />
Among the changes.<lb />
Dr. Nicholas Benson, senior<lb />
associate dean for operations at<lb />
the medical school, will also take<lb />
on the role of vice dean for the<lb />
medical school.<lb />
Dr. Sylvia Brown, associate dean<lb />
for graduate programs in the school<lb />
of nursing, will also serve as acting<lb />
dean for the school of nursing.<lb />
Dr. Phyllis Horns, dean of<lb />
the school of nursing, will now<lb />
serve as interim vice chancel-<lb />
lor for health sciences as well as<lb />
interim dean of the Brody School<lb />
of Medicine.<lb />
Dr. Cynda Johnson, dean of the<lb />
medical school, will now serve as<lb />
senior associate vice chancellor for<lb />
clinical and translational research<lb />
in the division of research and<lb />
graduate studies.<lb />
Dr. Michael Lewis, vice chan-<lb />
cellor for health sciences, will<lb />
report to the chancellor as an<lb />
executive assistant.<lb />
Carole Novick, interim asso-<lb />
ciate vice chancellor for health<lb />
sciences fund raising and interim<lb />
president of the ECU Medical<lb />
Foundation, will now also report<lb />
to Mickey Dowdy, vice chancellor<lb />
for advancement.<lb />
Durham said that the univer-<lb />
sity is optimistic about the changes<lb />
and is making progress.<lb />
"We have great strengths, and<lb />
we need to make sure we are as<lb />
effective and efficient as possible<lb />
to maximize those strengths<lb />

Student targets meth myths<lb />
(MC'T) If theres one<lb />
thing Stetson University stu-<lb />
dent William Collum wants his<lb />
classmates to know about nieth-<lb />
amphetamine, it's this: "This<lb />
ain't your grandma's speed<lb />
On Friday, more than 100<lb />
Stetson students in DeLand, Fla<lb />
in tie-dye t-shirts and baseball<lb />
caps found out for themselvesjust<lb />
how much worse it is.<lb />
Collum, a junior political sci-<lb />
ence student who has spent his<lb />
summer vacations as a congres-<lb />
sional intern in Washington, had<lb />
done so much research on meth<lb />
that he felt compelled to share his<lb />
findings with others He said that<lb />
college students are one of the<lb />
groups most likely to use the drug<lb />
"It's described as God, really<lb />
Collum told his classmates. "It puts<lb />
you in heaven, for a moment<lb />
Some of the meth abusers in C'ol-<lb />
luni's presentation looked like they<lb />
had been through quite the opposite.<lb />
A blown-up photo of a con-<lb />
victed abuser, who was on meth<lb />
for SB months, was one of several<lb />
examples onstage at Stetson's<lb />
Rinker Auditorium. Before meth,<lb />
the woman was petite and unre-<lb />
markable. In her after-meth pic-<lb />
ture, the woman was disheveled<lb />
and scarred, looking much older.<lb />
"People have been known to<lb />
actually dig up their skin Collum<lb />
said "It's called the Superman<lb />
state . . You don't feel pain<lb />
Meth is a drug that can be<lb />
chemically produced, or cooked,<lb />
at home, Collum said It is made<lb />
from pseudoephedrine and ephed-<lb />
rine, which is why some drug-<lb />
stores now require consumers<lb />
to first show identification when<lb />
buying cold medicines.<lb />
The effects also can be devas-<lb />
tating for nonusers.<lb />
Sometimes, chemicals seep<lb />
into walls and the clothes of<lb />
unsuspecting residents who didn't<lb />
realize the house they bought was<lb />
used as a drug-producing ware-<lb />

RANT OF THE DAY<lb />
ECU should really invest in stronger<lb />
toilet paper.<lb />
Not everyone thinks like you<lb />
Setting the<lb />
standards<lb />
Inconsistencies need a second look<lb />
SARAH BELL<lb />
EDITOR-IN-CHIEF<lb />
When I decided to attend ECU, my parents were<lb />
thrilled (read: proud alumni). S6me of my friends and<lb />
teachers, however, raised their eyebrows and made snide<lb />
remarks about applying to "Ease-E-U<lb />
Like my peers, I had done my research and knew that<lb />
as far as admissions requirements at ECU went, I was<lb />
a shoe-in based on my high school career - but I didn't<lb />
see that as a reason to pass over Pirate Nation in favor of<lb />
some out-of-state private school. Instead, I gloated about<lb />
being able to attend a great school without jumping<lb />
through the countless hoops of writing essays, filling<lb />
out tedious application tbrms and scheduling interviews.<lb />
I defended ECU's admissions requirements, applaud-<lb />
ing the university's faith in prospective students and its ,<lb />
willingness to give them a chance to succeed when other :<lb />
schools might have turned them down. After all, I said,<lb />
it isn't where you go but what you make of your college<lb />
experience that's important.<lb />
I've been here almost three and a half years now,<lb />
and I'm still glad I chose ECU. I'll admit I've become<lb />
a bit disillusioned, but not because of the university's<lb />
purported low standards - my one disappointment<lb />
stems from inconsistencies in the standards that stu-<lb />
dents are held to.<lb />
Students pursuing a BA Communication are<lb />
required to maintain a minimum of a 2.0 GPA, whereas<lb />
intended business majors must have a 2.5 cumulative<lb />
GPA or higher to be admitted into their major. Mem-<lb />
bers of SGA are required to maintain at least a 2.0. but<lb />
members of student media organizations must have a<lb />
2.25 GPA. Some professors have no attendance policy<lb />
whatsoever, while others demand perfect attendance and<lb />
penalize students' grades if they have to miss a class.<lb />
Undoubtedly these variations in requirements<lb />
reflect the students that different schools or organiza-<lb />
tions within ECU are trying to recruit (or discourage)<lb />
- but shouldn't they be the same? What happens to<lb />
students who qualify for one organization or degree, but<lb />
not the one they are most passionate about? The differ-<lb />
ences between the requirements aren't vast, but they're<lb />
just enough to hold some students back while giving<lb />
others advantages. All ECU students should be required<lb />
to strive for the same level ofexcellence no matter which<lb />
direction they choose to pursue during college<lb />
Correction:<lb />
Evolution<lb />
JESSICA DUNLOW<lb />
OPINION WRITER<lb />
I was sitting in a normal biolpgy class, listening<lb />
to my professor introduce Charles Darwin and the<lb />
Theory of Evolution. The professor then began to<lb />
ridicule the idea of "Creationism" stating that it just<lb />
"isn't possible" and that evolution is the only theory<lb />
that truly explains how the creatures of the world<lb />
came to be.<lb />
This idea offended me because while I am a sci-<lb />
entist, I am also a Christian and I don't think that<lb />
we have to choose one over the other.<lb />
People think evolution means we descended<lb />
from monkeys. Wrong. Not the correct definition.<lb />
Scientists today say that evolution is merely change.<lb />
Everything in the universe evolves. For instance,<lb />
most languages evolved from Latin into what they<lb />
currently are. Take Spanish or French for example.<lb />
Governments evolve too. Isn't that why our amend-<lb />
ment system exists? As for Biological evolution, it<lb />
is change in the characteristics of populations of<lb />
organisms. Biological changes occur over long peri-<lb />
ods of time and no person can see the changes that<lb />
take place in the environment or in humans. Why do<lb />
Creationists fight against the idea of evolution? The<lb />
world changes, we can all agree on that.<lb />
Christians believe that God created the earth<lb />
in six days and then rested on the seventh. Who is<lb />
to say that it didn't happen that way? How can we<lb />
determine what a day was to God or to the people<lb />
then? There is no clear definition stated in the Bible.<lb />
A day could have been 300 years then. There is no<lb />
possible way for us to know what was created back<lb />
then, or what things looked like in their earliest<lb />
forms. God must have granted these animals the<lb />
ability to change over the course of time to adapt to<lb />
the changes in their environments. I believe in the<lb />
Big Bang theory, but someone or something had to<lb />
be there to kick-start it. I believe it was God.<lb />
Fossils prove that animals that are currently on<lb />
earth evolved. With this evidence, it is easy to believe<lb />
in evolution. There is no written record of the dino-<lb />
saurs being on earth. However, I think it is possible<lb />
that God was simply practicing when he created<lb />
the dinosaurs. Perhaps he did not know what kind<lb />
of organism he wanted to inhabit his perfect world.<lb />
How are we to know? This is all speculation; but<lb />
when we begin to explore different theories, it leads<lb />
us to the question - Is it possible to understand and<lb />
believe in both evolution and Creationism?<lb />
Charles Darwin's Descent of Man Theory is<lb />
completely different from the idea of evolution. This<lb />
theory defines the specific animals throughout the<lb />
earth's natural history that Homo sapiens, modern-<lb />
day humans, supposedly descended from. There<lb />
are facts that link us to Homo erectus and even the<lb />
common day gorilla. It is necessary to understand<lb />
the difference between evolution and the Descent<lb />
of Man Theory. Science vs. God is the interminable<lb />
argument, and is not going away. In my opinion,<lb />
both are correct.<lb />
We should not condemn the absolutists of either<lb />
party. The gray area in between is where they should<lb />
meet. I believe in talking about this issue, discuss-<lb />
ing it with my friends to find out their views and<lb />
trying to comprehend their opinions. Because the<lb />
more I know about other points of view, the better I<lb />
will be able to explain and uphold my own ideals on<lb />
this issue. Remember, it is one thing to go around<lb />
and say that you "don't believe that we came from<lb />
monkeys" and saying, "I don't believe in evolution<lb />
or creationism Educate yourselves, so you can be<lb />
scientifically and religiously correct.<lb />
HIRKS<lb />
PIRATE RANTS<lb />
We have every right to critique<lb />
the Democrats because they<lb />
said they wouldn't raise taxes<lb />
and have already changed their<lb />

illegal immigration. I guess they<lb />
want to fund the billions of dollars<lb />

relationship, was feeling a little vulnerable as well.<lb />
Now that I'm at ECU, he doesn't want me going<lb />

live with him and commute to school. I do care about<lb />
him but I want my freedom too! Am I being selfish or<lb />
is there a way to have my cake and eat it, too?<lb />
Signed,<lb />
Hungry and Cakeless<lb />
Dear Cakeless,<lb />
If only life came with a remote control and we<lb />
could rewind time and avoid awkward situations such<lb />
as thing. Since that's not a possibility, at least not any-<lb />
time soon, the first thing that you need to do, is decide<lb />
what you really want from this guy. Do you want to<lb />
just be friends, friends with benefits, or have a relation-<lb />
ship? Once you decide, you need to tell him.<lb />
If you don't want a relationship with him, explain<lb />
that you value his friendship but don't think that you<lb />
should be more than friends. Sure no one likes to hear<lb />
that, but beating around the bush is only going to pro-<lb />
long the situation and makes things more awkward.<lb />
If you want all the benefits of a relationship with-<lb />
out the commitment make sure that he understands<lb />
and is O.K. with that.<lb />
Regardless, talk to him about everything that is<lb />
bothering you. The sooner you tell him how both his<lb />
friendship and your freedom are important to you, the<lb />
sooner you can figure out a way to balance the two<lb />
and start having some fun.<lb />
And remember, eating cake can sometimes be<lb />
messy, so don't expect things to ever be as simple as<lb />
they used to be between the two of you- not until<lb />
someone invents that remote control anyway.<lb />

Secrecy of genocide<lb />
Alarming crisis in Darfur unknown to many<lb />
ELIZABETH LAUTEN<lb />
CONTRIBUTING WRITER<lb />
We all know that hindsight is 2020, but that doesn't<lb />
excuse us from caring and reacting to issues while they're<lb />
happening. It amazes me how out of touch my peers<lb />
are. when it comes to the big issues in the world right<lb />
now. The situation in Darfur is appalling and yet ECU<lb />
students would rather complain about the Greek system<lb />
and the BSU than pay attention.<lb />
Many of us have seen Hotel Rwanda which recounted<lb />
the tragedy in Rwanda back in the 1990s and can't believe<lb />
that the world did so little to help Based on true events<lb />
within the country of Rwanda, the movie retells some<lb />
of the worst atrocities in the history of mankind, which<lb />
were enacted against the Tutsis, a race in Rwanda, by<lb />
their rival race, the Hutu In an eraofstateoftheart com-<lb />
munication and around the clock global news, the tragic<lb />
events that happened within the country went unnoticed<lb />
by most of the world. And, in just three short months,<lb />
one million Tutsis people were brutally murdered.<lb />
Again, I see Americans too caught upin their own prob-<lb />
lems torecognize how bad the struggle in Darfur is right now.<lb />
Just Saturday, a gang of armed men on horseback<lb />
swept into the village ofSirba, near the Chad-Sudan border<lb />
and killed 32 villagers, and wounding countless others.<lb />
The blame likely lies with the militants who terrorize the<lb />
country called the janjaweed, many of whom are former<lb />
criminals, have been released from prison and quite<lb />
likely may be sponsored by the Sudanese government<lb />
Attacks such as the one Saturday are becoming<lb />
commonplace. The United Nations recently blamed the<lb />
janjaweed for killing at least 92 people in .lebel Moon,<lb />
an area of Darfur, at the end of October.<lb />
More than 4.50,000 people have been killed, and<lb />
more than 2.5 million people have been displaced since<lb />
ethnic African tribesmen took up arms against the Arab-<lb />
led government in Khartoum in February 2008.<lb />
What's worse, is that the violence seems to<lb />
be spreading. Neighboring Chad has fallen victim<lb />
to 220 deaths by gunmen this past week alone.<lb />
This problem is clearly getting out of hand<lb />
The African Union, whose purpose is to help<lb />
secure democracy and human rights within Africa,<lb />
recognizes the horrific condition of life in Darfur<lb />
right now. Unfortunately, the AU army is terribly<lb />
inadequate in size, standing at 7,000 soldiers, and<lb />
cannot do much of anything about the crisis and<lb />
continuing genocide. While the UN has just pledged<lb />
to give the AU more money for troops and equip-<lb />
ment, I can't help but wonder if that alone is enough.<lb />
Back in 1993, the U.S. peacekeeping mission<lb />
to Somalia ended after 18 U.S. soldiers were killed<lb />
The very next year 800,000 Rwandans were killed<lb />
as the Clinton administration sat by the wayside and<lb />
refused to help, in fear of another failed peacekeep-<lb />
ing attempt and possibly losing more American lives<lb />
The world needs to intervene at this point, it<lb />
no one else the United States. Unlike the way we<lb />
handled Iraq, with not strong enough force, sup-<lb />
port or commitment from the start, we need to<lb />
go into Darfur with an appropriate mission - to<lb />
bring to a stop the terrible actions of the janjaweed.<lb />
Wedon'tneed to see Iraq becoming to Darfur what Soma-<lb />
lia was for Rwanda. While lilKTalsniay.savortlieirvictoryat die<lb />
polls right now, diey should not be too quick to say that a war in<lb />
Darfur to save its people from genocide is dixmied for failure<lb />
In the face of these unspeakable actions, it is our<lb />
ethical obligation as Americans to help a country that<lb />
does not have the ability to help itself, ensuring that there<lb />
won't be another movie like Hotel Rwanda about Darfur<lb />
in another 10 years. Youtube.com is proof enough of the<lb />
tragedies taking place.<lb />

Follies of the freshman lot<lb />
JONATHAN GARDNER<lb />
OPINION WRITER<lb />
Bestowed upon every college student is a complete<lb />
freedom. Students can choose which classes they want<lb />
to take and then in turn decide whether they want to<lb />
show up for them or not.<lb />
Yet, there's always one thing that will always bring<lb />
a select few down: The freshman lot. There's nothing<lb />
more disheartening than pulling into the lot, only to<lb />
see the Gold bus pulling away. It means you haw to<lb />
wait another 30 minutes, in various weather conditions.<lb />
when all you really want to do is get back and relax Its<lb />
ridiculous, and it needs to change.<lb />
The lot sounds glamorous when you first hear about<lb />
it. It's a fenced, secure location, guarded by a security<lb />
guard and is under the constant eye of security cameras.<lb />
It sounds great and at the $900 price tag students pay to<lb />
park there, it should be. 1 lowever, the reality is a very dif-<lb />
ferent story. What the lot turns out to be is an impound<lb />
lot so far off-campus that you need a bus to get there. It's<lb />
barely fenced and barely guarded. It's essentially a plot<lb />
of gravel and trash with an expensive buy-in.<lb />
The freshman lot also leads to more trouble than<lb />
it's worth. Gravel, which the lot is full of, can do serious<lb />
damage to the bottom of a car. So, because freshman are<lb />
forced to park in this lot if they choose to have an ECU<lb />
parking pass, they may have to pay the high price of<lb />
getting a car repaired, which hardly seems fair.<lb />
Another thing that could cause some trouble is the<lb />
bus schedules. As mentioned before, pulling into the lot<lb />
when a bus is leaving is annoying. However, this can<lb />
easily be remedied by entering a little earlier, right<lb />
If only it were that easy. Due to the irregular nature '<lb />
of traffic in the city, usually due to trains, the bus may<lb />
arrive five to 10 minutes early, or five to 10 minutes late<lb />
Kreshnian could be stuck in the middle of nowhere for<lb />
over an hour without any sign of a bus.<lb />
The real issue with most freshman drivers is acces-<lb />
sibility. There needs to be a way to get their cars closer<lb />
to campus, at least close enough to be able to leave on a<lb />
whim, instead of losing time waiting for the buses. There<lb />
are some alternatives that, at the moment, are untapped.<lb />
The first alternative would be to make use of what<lb />
we already have. During the day, many lots have unused<lb />
spots. By turning these C and B lots to CD or BD lots,<lb />
the use of the current freshman lot could be eliminated.<lb />
The other alternative is a little more costly. It involves<lb />
expanding the current lots to accommodate freshman<lb />
cars. It would cost some money, but I'm sure most fresh-<lb />

just a little fuzzy Now you have a<lb />
, hurdle to pass if you want to stand<lb />
a chance of taking home your<lb />
latest conquest remembering<lb />
their name<lb />
Such a dilemma has been the<lb />
downfall of many a Casanova.<lb />
Long hailed for its tradition of<lb />
free love and asking questions<lb />
later, it now seems that citing<lb />
amnesia no longer cuts it w hen it<lb />
comes to taking people home<lb />
After many tedious sit-downs<lb />

for those in a jam who desire<lb />
further canoodling.<lb />
The most brilliant I've heard<lb />
to date can be thought of as the<lb />
"find and replace technique If<lb />
a girl asks if you remember her<lb />
name, chuckle lightly and refute<lb />
her suspicions.<lb />
"Of course I remember your<lb />
name said my unnamed source.<lb />
Til then insert a compliment<lb />
such as 'beautiful baby' and then<lb />
quickly change the subject<lb />
Only with the most insistent<lb />
could this tactic be dangerous.<lb />

it might clinch your conquest at<lb />

on the walk or ride home.<lb />
If all else tails, try the name<lb />
game before shimmying down<lb />
the honesty road. While the<lb />
likelihood of guessing right is<lb />
barely IS percent, throwing out<lb />
a name could possibly give you<lb />
points for taking a shot, albeit<lb />
one in the dark<lb />
, Girls fare a little bit better in<lb />
this department because if they<lb />
forget your name, it won't be long<lb />
before another guy latches onto<lb />
their charms. For us, the tried<lb />
and true method involves intro-<lb />
ducing a friend to the mystery<lb />
man in order to discover his title.<lb />
Following this train of thought is<lb />
selecting a girl from your posse<lb />
to spark a conversation with the<lb />
unknown chap. That will not<lb />
only reveal his identity but also<lb />
his intentions.<lb />
Another foolproof strategy is<lb />
to ask for their digits and have<lb />
him put it into your phone. That<lb />
will make it a lot easier to use<lb />
your process of elimination skills<lb />
to remember who the guy was.<lb />
If a girl so desires to learn the<lb />
facts about a beau, try a clever<lb />
pick-up line that involves noting<lb />
the familiarity of a guy. Then<lb />
ask if he belongs to a certain<lb />
organization, say a fraternity or<lb />
contra-dance group, and lead the<lb />
conversation from there. This<lb />
w ill not only establish names but<lb />
quite possibly, a new friend.<lb />
Blanking out on a name will<lb />
always be an awkward situation.<lb />

from this sticky situation or better<lb />
yet, just hit on their friend.<lb />

1973<lb />
Look out 1967 the<lb />

JOHN BOSCO<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Last week, 1967 was the first<lb />
' year I looked at in a personal series<lb />
of retrospective looks at some<lb />
of the greatest years in popular<lb />
music history.<lb />
While 1967 was a huge year<lb />
- for the more psychedelic side of<lb />
popular music, in particular - 1973<lb />
deserves its credit, too.<lb />
Though the Beatles had<lb />
broken up three years earlier in<lb />
1970, I'aul McCartney didn't let<lb />
that stop him from moving on<lb />
with his music (neither did John<lb />
Lennon or George Harrison, who<lb />
also released albums this year).<lb />
It's a good thing he didn't; 1973's<lb />
Band On The Hun is not only one<lb />
of the tightest I'aul McCartney<lb />
and Wings album of all time - it's<lb />
probably my personal favorite.<lb />
Apparently I'm not the only<lb />
one who liked it, either, as it won<lb />
the Grammy award for Best l'op<lb />
Vocal Performance By a Duo,<lb />
Group or Chorus.<lb />
In 1973, ZZ Top also got their<lb />
fair share of widespread success,<lb />
with the release of their epic album<lb />
Tres Homines.<lb />
ZZ Top brought southern rock<lb />
and blues to the top of the charts<lb />
with their most well-known song<lb />
"La Grange which to this day<lb />
still raises hairs on my neck w hen<lb />
the first vocal track kicks in.<lb />
Also in 1973, a young up and<lb />
coming musician who is rumored<lb />
to be "the next Bob Dylan" by<lb />
numerous publications - Bruce<lb />
Springsteen - releases 'The Wild,<lb />
The Innocent, and the ! Street<lb />
Shuffle, his second album.<lb />
The album would only tore-<lb />
shadow the brilliance that was<lb />
to come on his 197,r) major break-<lb />
through album Bom To linn<lb />
In a much less mainstream<lb />
release, Iggy and The Stooges<lb />

had a similar effect on under-<lb />
ground musicians who discov-<lb />
ered The Velvet Underground &<lb />

The Who release Oiiadrophe-<lb />

transform rock opera's forever.<lb />
Even modern day indie art-<lb />

man Matt Friedberger gives his<lb />
respects to Pete Townshend's<lb />
genius in writing the album and<lb />
stating that it was highly influen-<lb />
tial on his personal sound.<lb />
What's 1973 without men-<lb />
tioning Pink Floyd? The English<lb />
group release The Dark Side of the<lb />
Moon, which features such epic<lb />
tracks as "Moneyrime" and "Us<lb />

ing The Dark Side of Oz (the<lb />
common name for the product of<lb />
syncing up sound from The Dark<lb />
Side of the Moon with the film The<lb />
Wizard of Ox.)<lb />
As always with these articles,<lb />
some things just get left out and<lb />
1973 is so crammed lull of great<lb />
music that it's easy to leave out<lb />
some of the best. 1973 also saw<lb />
the epic first major label release<lb />
for Bob Marley and The Waiter's<lb />
with Catch .1 Fire.<lb />
Aersoniith's sell-titled debut<lb />
alburn, Tom Waits' debut Closing<lb />

Live album from Dredg in Fillmore, Calif.<lb />
The newest from<lb />
California<lb />
AARON BORREGO<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Dredg has just released a new<lb />
live album entitled Live al the <lb />
more. This album was dropped this<lb />
past week on the Nov. 7 featuring<lb />
one of the more storied musi-<lb />
cal entertainment institutions<lb />
in the country.<lb />
The Fillmore is located in<lb />
San Francisco, Calif, and is<lb />
named for its location at the<lb />
intersection of Fillmore Street<lb />
and Geary Boulevard. The San<lb />
Francisco location is called the<lb />
"Fillmore west" as opposed to<lb />
being called the "Fillmore cast.<lb />
which refers to the location<lb />
set in NYC.<lb />
Since the mid-to-late 1980s,<lb />
the Fillmore auditorium has<lb />
been the breeding ground to<lb />
the pyschedelic movement<lb />
and the underground counter<lb />
culture that revolutionized the<lb />
music scene.<lb />
Back then hands such<lb />
as Janis Joplin, The Greatful<lb />
Dead and Jefferson Airplane<lb />
were all getting their starts<lb />
at the famed venue. Along the<lb />
years, the scope of the venue<lb />
changed, but not the importance<lb />
of the venue.<lb />
In the IS80S, punk bands such<lb />
as Blag Flag, The Dead Kennedys,<lb />
Bad Brains and T.S.O.L made this<lb />
venue still be part of the epicenter<lb />
of newer and radical cultures that<lb />
is associated with it today.<lb />
Anyway, enough about the<lb />
venue and on to the band. Dredg<lb />
has released three albums previ-<lb />
ous to this live compilation. This<lb />
live album is made up of songs<lb />
from the previous three efforts<lb />
without any new additional mate-<lb />
rial.<lb />
The actual album features<lb />
pretty good musical sound qual-<lb />
ity, but lacks in the vocal clar-<lb />
ity and quality department.<lb />
It is pretty noticable though<lb />
that this band is a very high<lb />
energy and legitimate live act.<lb />
1 in not sure if the singer just<lb />
can't sing as well live or if it was<lb />
the- actual production of the live<lb />
album, but either way it sounds<lb />
bad. The songs are pretty well<lb />
dispersed throughout the dis-<lb />
cography of the band for a well<lb />
blended mix.<lb />
This would be good lor some-<lb />
one who likes some of their songs<lb />
but isn't sure which songs they<lb />
exactly are. This is also good to<lb />
see whether or not you want to<lb />
spend some time to actually see<lb />
this band live.<lb />
It seems to me like a very<lb />
good idea, as all their songs are<lb />
very cerebral and almost have a<lb />
melodic dream sound to them.<lb />
The guitar work sounds like that<lb />
of the Edge from U2 and the sing-<lb />
ing reminds me a bit of Switchfoot.<lb />
This is a very potent combina-<lb />
tion.<lb />
Overall, I give this album an<lb />
A- for its great musical content<lb />
and infectious lyrics. However,<lb />
the sound quality at times is<lb />
a bit junky and needs to have<lb />
another microphone go into it.<lb />
Live albums are always the best<lb />
to listen to while the volume is all<lb />
the way up!<lb />

BABEL<lb />
continued from A6<lb />
an even bigger touch of realism,<lb />
Babel contains one of the best<lb />
casts I've seen in a movie this<lb />
year. While the film contains no<lb />
major stars other than Brad l'itt<lb />
and Cate Blanchett, the rest of the<lb />
cast also acts extremely well.<lb />
Brad Pitt plays the American<lb />
tourist Tom while Cate Blanchett<lb />
plays Tom's wife Susan. Many<lb />
people have stated that this was<lb />
Brad Pitt's best performance<lb />
and while his performance was<lb />
very emotional I believe that<lb />
the notion that this was his best<lb />
film is an insult to his career.<lb />
His performance was slightly<lb />
above average but it doesn't<lb />
compare to his performances<lb />
in Seven or Seven Years in Tibet.<lb />
The main fault with his casting-<lb />
is that he wasn't allowed enough<lb />
screen-time to really bring<lb />
out his character.<lb />
Blanchett shines as always and<lb />
provides possibly the best perfor-<lb />
mance of the film. Tom's children<lb />
are played by File Fanning and<lb />
Nathan Gamble. Some of you<lb />
may recognize Fanning as Dakota<lb />
Farming's little sister. She is the<lb />
spitting image in looks as well as<lb />
talent. As I stated before, the rest<lb />
of the cast does exceedingly well,<lb />
but the performances that really<lb />
stand out other than Blanchett's<lb />
are the characters of Abdullah,<lb />
played by Mustapha Rachidi, and<lb />
Flyse, played by Matyelok Gibbs.<lb />
Mustapha is able is pull out emo-<lb />
tion as I've seen few other child<lb />
actors do and even though he is<lb />
Mhe one who accidentally shot<lb />
Susan, the viewer cannot help<lb />
but like his as he has so many<lb />
redeeming qualities, Gibbs has<lb />
absolutely no lines because she<lb />
plays a deaf-mute but her perfor-<lb />
mance says so much even though<lb />
her character cannot.<lb />
The film is definitely not a<lb />
one-man show and this makes<lb />
the film even better than it<lb />
already is because the viewer<lb />
looks forward to witnessing every<lb />
characters performance and not<lb />
just a select few.<lb />
The films main message is the<lb />
importanceof communication both<lb />
verbal and nonverbal, hence the '<lb />
title Babel. As many of you know,<lb />
Babel was the city in the Bible in<lb />
which all of the world's people<lb />
came together and, because the<lb />
thought they were better than<lb />
God, fused their knowledge<lb />
to create the Tower of Babel<lb />
which was supposed to be a<lb />
way into heaven by bypassing<lb />
God and all of his requirements.<lb />
God destroyed the tower and<lb />
then divided the people into<lb />
different races and languages,<lb />
therefore preventing them from<lb />
coming together again and doing<lb />
the same thing.<lb />
Babel shows how the<lb />
breakdown of simple<lb />
communication can lead to dev-<lb />
astating circumstances. Virtually<lb />
every character in the movie suf-<lb />
fers from some kind of extreme<lb />
hardship because of the lack of<lb />
effectively getting across the<lb />
true nature of their situation.<lb />
While the viewer may shake their<lb />
head in wonder about how some<lb />
of the characters make some of<lb />
the decisions they do, in the end<lb />
the viewer ends up admiring the<lb />
character for their many redeem-<lb />
ing although poorly managed<lb />
qualities.<lb />
Babel is definitely one of<lb />
the best films of the decade<lb />
and will no doubt be a con-<lb />
tender at the upcoming Oscars,<lb />
nominated and possibly win-<lb />
ning best picture, screenplay<lb />
and cinematography as well as a<lb />
possible best supporting<lb />
actress nomination for Blanch-<lb />
ett. The film may not make<lb />
much money at the box office,<lb />
as most of the more excellent<lb />
films don't, but that fact does<lb />
absolutely nothing to diminish<lb />
the film's quality.<lb />

KEYS TO ,<lb />
THE GAME -RitEr<lb />
RICE<lb />
1. Force turnovers:<lb />
This has been Rice's bread and butter all season, and a<lb />
big part in its four-game win streak. The Owls forced Tulsa<lb />
into four turnovers last week and blocked a kick to win,<lb />
despite giving up nearly 600 yards of total offense to the<lb />
Golden Hurricane.<lb />
2. Dillard and Smith:<lb />
If Rice is going to move the ball against the ECU defense,<lb />
the Owls must have balance. ECU proved last week, it can<lb />
win games by making a team one-dimensional. The Pirates<lb />
will give Jarett Dillard his catches as long as they stop<lb />
Quinton Smith and the Rice ground game.<lb />
3. Sacks:<lb />
Rice has the second-most sacks of any team in Conference<lb />
USA with 25. SMU has 26. The Owls have also given up the<lb />
most sacks in the conference with 25. The Owls will have<lb />
to put consistent pressure on James Pinkney while keeping<lb />
Chase Clement upright against a hungry ECU defense that<lb />
was held without a sack for the first time in eight games<lb />
a week ago.<lb />
Pirates can clinch C-<lb />
USA East Division with<lb />
win<lb />
RON CLEMENTS<lb />
SENIOR WRITER<lb />
At first glance, it is hard<lb />
to figure out why Rice is in con-<lb />
tention for a bowl game or how<lb />
the Owls have won four straight.<lb />
Rice is last in Conference USA in<lb />
rushing defense, second-to-last in scor-<lb />
ing defense and last in total defense.<lb />
The Owls are surrendering over 443<lb />
yards per game and nearly SS points.<lb />
When you look more closely,<lb />
it is easy to see Rice's formula for<lb />
success. The Owls (5-fi, 4-2 Con-<lb />
ference USA) are tops in turnover<lb />
margin in the conference at plus-11,<lb />
which is good enough to rank fifth<lb />
nationally. If that's not enough to<lb />
get ECU's attention for Saturday's<lb />
contest at Rice, Rice's 41-38 double<lb />
overtime win at Tulsa last week is.<lb />
"There is no doubt that that got<lb />
our team's attention said ECU coach<lb />
Skip Holtz. "We understand what<lb />
a good team Tulsa is. They went in<lb />
there and played extremely well<lb />
ECU wide receiver Phillip Henry,<lb />
who caught five passes for 96 yards<lb />
during last week's win over Mar-<lb />
shall, said Rice is on their radar.<lb />
"We never take any team lightly<lb />
because we know that we were in<lb />
that same position at one point<lb />
Henry said. "We know that they're<lb />
a good team on offense and they<lb />
have some good guys on defense<lb />
Rice forced four turnovers last<lb />
week in its win at Tulsa and has<lb />
forced 22 on the season, second-best<lb />
in C-USA behind the 23 takeaways<lb />
by ECU and Southern Miss. Holtz<lb />
said the Owls are very aggressive on<lb />
defense, which b why they've forced<lb />
so many turnovers, but that aggres-<lb />
siveness has also led to big<lb />
plays being made on them.<lb />
"They've given up<lb />
some big plays with<lb />
their aggressive-<lb />
ness Holtz said.<lb />
"They're play-<lb />
ing a lot of man<lb />
coverage and<lb />
bumping in your face and bringing<lb />
a lot of pressure. They have two very<lb />
active outside linebackers that blitz<lb />
almost every down. They try to get<lb />
in your backfield and cause disrup-<lb />
tion, lost yardage plays and sacks,<lb />
and make your quarterback throw the<lb />
ball before he's ready to throw it. But<lb />
with all the man coverage they run,<lb />
the margin for error is not that great<lb />
Rice is allowing 250 yards<lb />
through the air, but has 25 sacks<lb />
and six interceptions. The Owls<lb />
have also forced 16 fumbles. Lead-<lb />
ing the way for the aggressive Rice<lb />
defense is linebacker Brian Raines.<lb />
The sophomore from Missouri<lb />
City, Tex has 92 tackles on the year<lb />
with 4r sacks and three forced fumbles.<lb />
"He is very active, aggressive and<lb />
athletic Holtz said. "He has a nose<lb />
for the ball and he is very fast. That<lb />
many tackles don't just find you, you<lb />
have to find them and that's what he<lb />
does. They returned eight starters on<lb />
defense so it's not like they are trying to<lb />
build this with a lot of young players<lb />
Raines and the Owls defense will<lb />
do battle with an ECU offense that<lb />
has been inconsistent this season and<lb />
struggles inside the red zone. The<lb />
Pirates pass attack has been solid<lb />
with quarterback James Pinkney at<lb />
the helm. ECU is fourth in C-USA<lb />
with 245 yards per game, but the<lb />
rushing game is ninth in the league<lb />
and ECU ranks just seventh in total<lb />
offense and eighth in scoring offense<lb />
at 23.5 points per game. ECU has just<lb />
18 touchdowns in 36 red zone trips,<lb />
something Holtz said he must address.<lb />
"There are still some things that<lb />
bother me offensively that we need to<lb />
continue to improve on Holtz said.<lb />
"One without a doubt is our red zone<lb />
productivity. We got inside the 5-yard<lb />
line three times and only put the ball<lb />
in once and we had to kick two field<lb />
goals. The other thing that kind of<lb />
bothers me right now is that we don't<lb />
have a hammer. We get in the<lb />
middle of the field for second<lb />
and one and or third and<lb />
one and we don't have a<lb />
lot of punch as far as<lb />
getting a first down<lb />

ECU<lb />
1. Score touchdowns:<lb />
The Pirates have just 18 touchdowns in 36 red zone trips this<lb />
season and are 11 for 23 in touchdown productivity inside the<lb />
red zone in conference games. In a game that could be high-<lb />
scoring, the Pirates cannot afford to settle for field goals.<lb />
2. Take care of the ball:<lb />
Rice leads the conference in turnover margin and is third<lb />
in takeaways. ECU is first in takeaways with 23, but has<lb />
also turned the ball over 19 times. With the opportunistic<lb />
Rice offense demonstrating a proclivity to convert turnovers<lb />
into points, the Pirates cannot afford to make mistakes<lb />
with the ball.<lb />
3. Hit the big play:<lb />
Rice has been susceptible to the big play this season, so<lb />
the ECU offense must push the ball downfield at times to<lb />
stretch the Rice defense. Holtz has had conservative game<lb />
plans in place for ECU's wins at Southern Miss and UCF,<lb />
but he should open up the play book against an aggressive<lb />
Rice defense that is surrendering better than 440 yards and<lb />
35 points per game.<lb />
"We've got to put pressure on the quarterback,<lb />
we've got to stop the run game, we've got to play<lb />
good on defense. We've got to not give up big plays<lb />
and take care of the football. Thats the key for us.<lb />
If we don't turn the football over and we don't have<lb />
stupid penalties, we're going to score. If s going to<lb />
take a complete effort We're playing our best ball<lb />
right now. It should be an exciting game to watch<lb />
HOLTZ<lb />
"We cant control all those things on the outside<lb />
I what everyone's talking and speculating about. It's<lb />
great for the Pirate Nation, and the student body<lb />
to sit around the coffee shops on Monday through<lb />
All of that is exerting. We just have to stay<lb />
I focused on what we have to do. And right now, we've<lb />

When the upperclassmen heard<lb />
their former head coach mutter the<lb />
"must-win slogan, it was to keep his<lb />
job. A half decade later, the coach-<lb />
ing cliche actually has some lasting<lb />
implications.<lb />
Win, celebrate and wait. Lose,<lb />
sweat and wait.<lb />
With two games remaining, the<lb />
Pirates are a win away from a berth<lb />
in the conference's second champion-<lb />
ship game. A road win at Rice locks<lb />
ECU into an improbable one-year<lb />
reign as the Conference USA East<lb />
Division champion, securing a slot in<lb />
a Dec. 1 national television broadcast<lb />
with a to-be-determined opponent.<lb />
A hiccup interrupts the Pirates'<lb />
plan. It erases the easy feeling<lb />
associated with winning, namely a<lb />
potential five-game winning streak.<lb />
It abruptly flips the conference race,<lb />
forcing Pirate fans from first-class<lb />
to that uncomfortable middle seat<lb />
between two burley women.<lb />
Southern Miss, who the Pirates<lb />
downed 20-17 in overtime thanks<lb />
to Travis Williams' game-ending<lb />
interception, has to lose one of their<lb />
final two games for ECU to clinch<lb />
the championship berth. USM hosts<lb />
winnable games against UAB and<lb />
Marshall to conclude their season.<lb />
Ironically, ECU's season hinges<lb />
not against their geographical and<lb />
hated rival, but instead versus an<lb />
academically oriented private school<lb />
in Texas with a first-year head coach<lb />
and the nation's youngest offensive<lb />
coordinator. Penciling in wins before<lb />
the season started and Rice seemed<lb />
like a sure bet. Now the Owls have<lb />
to power to ruin the Pirates' surpris-<lb />
ing upstart.<lb />
"We've got to come out and win<lb />

junior defensive tackle. "If we don't<lb />

Softball receives two commitments during early signing period<lb />
(SID) Two high school<lb />
seniors have signed National<lb />
Letters of Intent to play soft-<lb />
ball at KCU, according to an<lb />
announcement made by head<lb />
coach Tracey Kee. Left-hand-<lb />
ers Brittany Howell, Concrete,<lb />
Wash, and Britain Jimenez,<lb />
Oakdale, Calif, are scheduled to<lb />
enroll at KCU in the fall of'2007<lb />
and begin playing during the<lb />
2008 campaign.<lb />
"Both Britain and Brittany<lb />
have the ability to make imme-<lb />
diate impacts in our program<lb />
said Kee. "They are both focused<lb />
and driven on the field and in<lb />
the classroom. They are fierce<lb />
competitors and relentless work-<lb />
ers. As a coach, that's all you can<lb />
ask for. I look forward to seeing<lb />
them In a Pirate uniform in the<lb />
near future<lb />
Howell, a talented pitcher and<lb />
hitter, earned first-team all-state<lb />
honors in 200.5 and 200fi and<lb />
second-team in 2004. At Con-<lb />
crete High, Howell culminated<lb />
a record of .55-12, striking out<lb />
804 batters. How ell also recorded<lb />
eleven no-hitters and one perfect<lb />
game in her prep career. At the<lb />
plate, Howell batted .496 with<lb />
five home runs and 87 RBI for<lb />
Concrete H.S. Her ASA travel<lb />
team is the Washington Lake<lb />
Breeze where she gained the<lb />
majority of her experience.<lb />
"Brittany brings a much<lb />
needed left-handed arm to our<lb />
pitching rotation said Kee. "Her<lb />
ability to focus and make the<lb />
pitches she needs is mature beyond<lb />
her years. She has an unbelievable<lb />
understanding of the game and<lb />
that will pay huge dividends<lb />
in her success on the mound<lb />
"Out of my choices, KCUj<lb />
felt the most like home said<lb />
Howell. "I loved the college<lb />
town' atmosphere. It had every-<lb />
thing I looked for in a college<lb />
including my intended major of<lb />
nursing. I felt really comfortable<lb />
with the coaches and players and<lb />
I don't think I could have ended<lb />
up at a better place<lb />
Jimenez is a versatile first<lb />
baseman who could play multiple<lb />
positions for the Pirates. Jimenez<lb />
led Oakdale High to league<lb />
championships in 2004, 2005<lb />
and 2006. In 2006, Jimenez was<lb />
named first-team all-state and<lb />
Valley Oak League Offensive<lb />
Player of the Year. She compiled<lb />
a career batting average of .437<lb />
and tallied 71 RBI at Oakdale<lb />
High. She is a member of the Ail-<lb />
American Sports Academy ASA<lb />
Gold Team.<lb />
"Britain Jimenez is one of the<lb />
purest left-handed batters we<lb />
have ever recruited said Kee.<lb />
"Her hitters mentality and abil-<lb />
ity to drive the ball to all fields<lb />
will mix well in our future line-<lb />
up. As a coaching staff, we felt we<lb />
needed that true hitter who could<lb />
drive i.i runs and we feel we found<lb />
that in Britain<lb />
"I chose KCU because I felt<lb />
that it had the atmosphere of<lb />
my hometown said Jimenez.<lb />
"Coach Kee, Coach Koz and all<lb />
the girls all made me feel like I<lb />
was part of their family. When I<lb />
had the chance to watch practice,<lb />
I could see this was a hardwork-<lb />
ing, dedicated team and that<lb />
this was a program for me<lb />
Kee hopes both players will<lb />
perform well on the field and in<lb />
the classroom for the Pirates.<lb />
Howell ranks first in her class<lb />
with a 3.97 GPA and a three-<lb />
year member of the National<lb />
Honor Society, while Jimenez<lb />
was named to the Renais-<lb />
sance Gold Honor Roll in 2005<lb />
and 2006 with a GPA of 3.83.<lb />

one win to get in the championship<lb />
game The strength of their team<lb />
is their athleticism. We've got to<lb />
put pressure on the quarterback,<lb />
we've got to stop the run game,<lb />
we've got to play good on defense<lb />
The ECU coaches and players<lb />
know that the defense has lifted<lb />
them to their position of playing<lb />
for a conference championship.<lb />
"Our defense has been carrying<lb />
us mi tar said Henry, who is second<lb />
on the Pirates with S! receptions<lb />
for 454 yards. "We're just going to<lb />
continue to try to match their play"<lb />
The Pirates (6-4, 5-2 C-USA)<lb />
have scored more than SO points in<lb />
four of their six wins, and they may<lb />
need that same kind of offensive<lb />
production against a Rice offense.<lb />
The Owls are averaging over<lb />
2 points per game and have won<lb />
four straight since a ,Sh-s24 loss to<lb />
Tulane. Kice is averaging SK points<lb />
during its win streak with a home<lb />
win over UAB and road victories<lb />
against UCF, UTEP and Tulsa.<lb />
Kins main weapon on offense<lb />
has been wide receiver larett Di!<lb />
lard. The mo-pound sophomore<lb />
from San Antonio leads C-USA<lb />
in touchdown receptions with 10.<lb />
The offense, run by former<lb />
Texas quarterback and rookie offen-<lb />
sive coordinator Major Applewhite,<lb />
is balanced with senior running<lb />
back Quinton Smith averaging 113<lb />
yards a game and sophomore quar-<lb />
terback Chase Clement passing for<lb />
more than 800 yards per contest.<lb />
Clement has 15 touchdown passes<lb />
to just four interceptions, some-<lb />
thing that has Graham confident<lb />
during Rice's four-game win streak.<lb />
"We need to stop Rice<lb />
on defense and we have<lb />
to be able to score on<lb />
offense, but then you<lb />
get into the flow of the<lb />
game and you make a<lb />
determination on how you<lb />
are going to play it. "<lb />
SKIP HOLTZ<lb />
ECU HEAD COACH<lb />
"We take care of the football<lb />
Graham said. "I believe we're one<lb />
of the top teams in tile country in<lb />
doing that, one of the top teams in<lb />
the country in turnover ratio. That's<lb />
the key for us. If we don't turn the<lb />
football over and we don't have stupid<lb />
penalties, we're going to score<lb />
Holtz said the game could be<lb />
a shootout, but his approach to the<lb />
game will be as it is every week.<lb />
"It is what we say going into<lb />
every game the Pirates skipper<lb />
said. "We need to stop them on<lb />
defense and we have to be able to<lb />
score on offense, but then you get<lb />
into the flow of the game and you<lb />
make a determination on how you<lb />
are going to play it. We've got to<lb />
find a way to go 1-0 on the road<lb />
to play Rice. It doesn't matter how<lb />
we win, we just have to find a way<lb />
to score more points at the end of<lb />
the day<lb />
Graham said his team needs to<lb />
play near perfect football to win, and<lb />
is expecting a competitive game.<lb />
"It's going to take a complete<lb />
effort Graham said. "They're<lb />
a good football team coming in<lb />
here. We're playing our best ball<lb />
right now. They're playing their<lb />
best ball. They're 4-0 in the last<lb />
four games. We're 4-0, so it should<lb />
be an exciting game to watch<lb />
ECU won last year's matchup<lb />
in Greenville, 41-28, and Saturday's<lb />
kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. from<lb />
Rice Stadium in Houston as Holtz.<lb />
said his team will return to the "road<lb />
warrior" persona it took on with<lb />
wins at Southern Miss and UCF<lb />
"With four of our last five games<lb />
on the road, we said if we want<lb />
to make anything special happen<lb />
with this season, we gotta be road<lb />
warriors Holtz said. "That's been<lb />
our battle cry. I felt like we'd have<lb />
enough emotions for the last game at<lb />
home, but now we've got to go back<lb />
on the road and pick up our battle<lb />
flag of being road warriors and<lb />
playing with everybody against us<lb />

OPINION<lb />
continued from A8<lb />
ECU has never been featured in<lb />
a conference championship tilt.<lb />
Few border wars, instate rivalries<lb />
or bowl games rival this game's<lb />
impact<lb />
"You play football to reach cer-<lb />
tain goals and those goals we have<lb />
set in place are right there in their<lb />
hands Shankweiler reiterated.<lb />
Fulfilling the program's pic-<lb />
season and long-term goals stay in<lb />
line with the team's adopted mantra<lb />
to stay "humble and hungry<lb />
"The way to succeed is to stay<lb />
fin used on controlling what we can<lb />
control Holtz. said after practice<lb />
Tuesday. "And right now, we've<lb />
been humble up to this point. Let's<lb />
not pat ourselves on the back about<lb />
six wins.<lb />
Remembering what gap to fill<lb />
and what route to run becomes<lb />
imperative toward a welcoming<lb />
crowd at the Kinston airport. Losing<lb />
focus and that enthusiasm that has<lb />
rebounded their season could have<lb />
a detrimental effect.<lb />
"We ought to be as hungry to go<lb />
get this game as we were game one.<lb />
And then let's just focus on what we<lb />
have to do to make sure we focus on<lb />
this game to give ourselves the best<lb />
chance to prepare to go in<lb />
ECU won a "statement game"<lb />
on the road at USM, but admittedly<lb />
came out flat in front of a home<lb />
crowd versus Tulsa, last season's<lb />
conference champion. After such<lb />
an emotional win over Marshall at<lb />
home to culminate Senior Day, Rice<lb />
has the makings of a trap game.<lb />
"In November, when you're<lb />
playing still competitive football,<lb />
it will come down to your focus<lb />
said Greg HudsAn, ECU's defensive<lb />
coordinator. "That has made our<lb />
players focus on the task at hand<lb />
and staying 1-0 If you focus on<lb />
the little details, you don't have to<lb />
worry about the big picture<lb />
With a loss, ECU the big picture<lb />
becomes a Hattiesburg-based televi-<lb />
sion set. With a win, the big picture-<lb />
becomes crystal clear.<lb />
