KIMBERLY BELLAMY '<lb />
SENIOR STAFF WRITER<lb />
Members of the ECU and<lb />
the Greenville community<lb />
participated in the GuluWalk<lb />
Greenville on Saturday morning.<lb />
GuluWalk Greenville is walk<lb />
that was organized by recent<lb />
ECU graduate Neil Klinedinst to<lb />
raise money for children who are<lb />
in danger of being abducted by<lb />
the Lord's Resistance Army in<lb />
Uganda.<lb />
normal activities during the day<lb />
but flee for shelter at night to<lb />
avoid being abducted by<lb />
the LRA, being raped, being<lb />
vk,i,l 'e d or being forced<lb />
to kill others.<lb />
Over 200 participants were<lb />
registered to participate in<lb />
the walk by 10 a.m. The walk<lb />
and donations were voluntary,<lb />
according to Klinedinst.<lb />
The walk started at the<lb />
Town Commons on First<lb />
Street and concluded at the<lb />
Mendenhall Student Center brick-<lb />
yard.<lb />
Speakers for the event<lb />
included Senator Tony Moore,<lb />
Pastor George Okudi, 2003 Afri-<lb />
can male musician of the year<lb />
and Jamie Omundi.<lb />
"Having Okudi as a speaker<lb />
was especially effective because<lb />
he has been personally affected<lb />
by the LRA in his past<lb />
said Klinedinst.<lb />
Moore talked about respon-<lb />
sibility and service, and<lb />
Omundi talked about the work her<lb />
mother does with the orphanages in<lb />
northern Uganda.<lb />
Omundi explained how<lb />
thrilled she was toseepeoplethatwere<lb />
so far away helping to bring hope<lb />
to northern Uganda, according<lb />
to Klinedinst.<lb />
was organized to raise funds for the troubled children in areas of Africa.<lb />
The motto of the GuluWalk to participate and the amount of<lb />
Greenville was, "Are you a reason<lb />
for hope in Northern Uganda?"<lb />
Many individuals attempted to<lb />
be hope for the children in Uganda<lb />
by giving donations.<lb />
Klinedinst saidthatthey have<lb />
counted over $3,500 in dona-<lb />
tions and they are still receiving<lb />
notification that people would like<lb />
to donate.<lb />
The GuluWalk may become<lb />
an annual event; another is<lb />
already in the works for next year<lb />
with the plans of more music and<lb />
committee members, according<lb />
to Klinedinst.<lb />
Klinedinst seemed pleased at<lb />
the turnout of people who wanted<lb />
money raised.<lb />
"1 am proud of the indi-<lb />
viduals who participated as we<lb />
became a larger voice for these<lb />
children. They need, and deserve<lb />
people to stand ip for them and<lb />
it was great to see the ECU<lb />
community do just that Klin-<lb />
edinst said.<lb />

contribution to the cause or learn<lb />

The Office of the Dean of Stu-<lb />

on the ECU campus many years<lb />
ago. As this campus grows and a<lb />

valuable college experience.<lb />
The Office of the Dean of<lb />
Students is an organization that<lb />
embodies numerous programs<lb />
such as students rights and respon-<lb />

Before being appointed Dean<lb />

ECU's Associate Vice Chancellor<lb />
for Counseling, Student Health<lb />
and Student Development.<lb />
She was also the Director of<lb />
the Center for Counseling and<lb />

According to Dr. Marilyn<lb />
Sheerer, interim vice chancellor<lb />
in the division of Student Life, the<lb />
purpose of this program is so that<lb />
students know where to go to find<lb />
help when they have a problem.<lb />
"It is a one stop shop for stu-<lb />

"The program will communi-<lb />

will let faculty know that they are<lb />
an available resource willing and<lb />
ready to assist the student body<lb />
says Sheerer.<lb />

Immunity granted for younger<lb />
boy in Carroll County child killing<lb />
(AP) A Carroll County<lb />
judge has granted immunity to<lb />
a 14-year-old boy once thought<lb />
to be the killer of 8-year-old<lb />
Amy Yates.<lb />
"Anything he says in the<lb />
grand jury room, or any evidence<lb />
we derive from his testimony<lb />
cannot be used against him in<lb />
any prosecution later on down<lb />
the road District Attorney Pete<lb />
Skandalakis said Tuesday, adding<lb />
that the immunity request was<lb />
made by the Carroll County grand<lb />
jury last week.<lb />
Skandalakis called the case<lb />
one of the most complex of his 22<lb />
year career.<lb />
"You have different laws that<lb />
apply to each one of the suspects<lb />
who, in theory, have committed the<lb />
same crime he said.<lb />
"It gets more complex every<lb />
time you turn a corner, every time<lb />
you turn a page on this Investiga-<lb />
tive process. Sometimes instead of<lb />
getting more answers, you have<lb />
more questions<lb />
Amy Yates disappeared in<lb />
April 2004 while riding her bike<lb />
to a friend's home.<lb />
Her body was found hours later<lb />
in a gully.<lb />
The two confessions and<lb />
retractions have left the resi-<lb />
dents of the west Georgia town of<lb />
Carrollton wondering whether<lb />
Yates' killer will ever be known.<lb />
Happy birthday to you, you live<lb />
in a zoo: Gorilla twins turn 1<lb />
(AP) Cooper Lund's<lb />
rendition of "Happy Birthday"<lb />
included lines about living in a<lb />
zoo and looking like a monkey,<lb />
but the birthday boy and girl<lb />
weren't insulted.<lb />
Kali and Kazi just romped<lb />
about their African rain forest<lb />
playground, chewing on fruit and<lb />
swinging from vines. The twin<lb />
western lowland gorillas' first<lb />
birthday was celebrated at Zoo<lb />
Atlanta on Tuesday, a significant<lb />
hallmark in their young lives.<lb />
About 20 percent of gorillas<lb />
don't live through their first year,<lb />
especially as a pair.<lb />
Kali and Kazi are the only<lb />
gorilla twins in the world born<lb />
in captivity to be raised solely by<lb />
their mother.<lb />
They are one of just seven sets<lb />
of gorilla twins to be born in U.S.<lb />
zoos in the last 50 years.<lb />
Four of the sets died before<lb />
their first birthday; the other three<lb />
were raised by zookeepers.<lb />
"I love them so much he<lb />
squealed with delight as the<lb />
twins rode on their mother's<lb />
back "I want to give them a<lb />
great big kiss<lb />
Zoo Atlanta is also home to<lb />
the country's newest panda cub,<lb />
born Sept. G.<lb />
The baby girl won't be shown<lb />
in public until late December or<lb />
early January.<lb />
Paraplegic Fisherman Rescued<lb />
From River<lb />
(KMTR) A paraplegic<lb />
fisherman was rescued Wednesday<lb />
after his motorized wheelchair fell<lb />
into Pittsburgh's frigid Allegheny<lb />
River, rescuers said.<lb />
Tom Lippert, 45, of Spring<lb />
Garden, Pa whose legs are para-<lb />
lyzed, was fishing along a walkway<lb />
near the city's PNC Park shortly<lb />
before 10 a.m. when he fell into<lb />
the river, which flows through<lb />
downtown Pittsburgh.<lb />
As he clung to the shorewall,<lb />
Lippert's friend John Force, 44,<lb />
called for help.<lb />
A rescue boat arrived within<lb />
minutes, The Pittsburgh Post-<lb />
Gazette reported.<lb />
Lippert was taken to a hospital<lb />
suffering from exposure.<lb />
Man Robs Bank to Go to Jail<lb />
(KMTR) An Ohio man<lb />
who couldn't find work got him-<lb />
self arrested lor bank robbery so<lb />
he could go to jail until he was<lb />
eligible to collect Social<lb />
Security benefits.<lb />
Timothy Bowers, 62, told<lb />
Common Pleas Judge Angela<lb />
White he hasn't had steady work<lb />
for almost three years and the kind<lb />
of jobs available to him pay only<lb />
minimum wage, The Columbus<lb />
Dispatch reports.<lb />
Appearing in Franklin County<lb />
Common Pleas Court in Columbus<lb />
Thursday, Bowers pleaded guilty<lb />
to walking into the Fifth Third<lb />
Bank and handing a note to the<lb />
teller announcing a robbery.<lb />
After the teller put four $20<lb />
bills and a dye pack in an envelope,<lb />
Bowers walked over to the bank<lb />
guard and surrendered.<lb />
The county prosecutor's<lb />
office argued against locking<lb />
Bowers up after a court-ordered<lb />
psychological exam concluded he<lb />
was competent.<lb />
The Dispatch report said<lb />
White said, "I'm going to give<lb />
you your birthday present as<lb />
she ordered a 3-year sentence for<lb />
Bowers, who turns 83 at the end<lb />
of the month.<lb />

(AP) Supermodel Maggie<lb />
Rizer returned to her hometown<lb />
this week to begin working on an<lb />
AIDS documentary being directed<lb />
by Alexandra Kerry, the daughter<lb />
of U.S. Sen. John Kerry.<lb />
The film, titled "Maggie and<lb />
Me is being produced by AIDS<lb />
activist Suzanne Engo, whose<lb />
father is a former ambassador to<lb />
the United Nations from the Afri-<lb />

launched at the U.N. in 2003.<lb />
The festival is committed to the<lb />

film and television as tools to fight<lb />
HIVAIDS.<lb />
A clip from the film will be<lb />
screened at the AIDS Film Fes-<lb />

City, where Rizer will be honored<lb />
for her work in increasing aware-<lb />

Rizer's father died of AIDS in<lb />
1992 at age 38.<lb />

Fugitive in sex slave case sur-<lb />
renders after 15 years<lb />
(AP) One of two brothers<lb />
accused of kidnapping two teen-<lb />
age prostitutes and keeping them<lb />
as sex slaves has surrendered to<lb />
authorities after 15 years as a<lb />
fugitive.<lb />
Police say Vance Roberts<lb />
turned himself in at the Wash-<lb />
ington County Jail after he and his<lb />
brother, Paul Jackson, skipped out<lb />
on their bail in 1991.<lb />
Roberts will go on trial next<lb />
week. 36-year-old Jackson remains<lb />
at large. Hillsboro Police say Rob-<lb />
erts, 52, won't reveal his brother's<lb />
whereabouts.<lb />
Roberts told police he and Jack-<lb />
son searched for young prostitutes,<lb />
kidnapped them, kept them in<lb />
chains and sexually assaulted them<lb />
at a house in Hillsboro.<lb />
In 1990, a girl got away. When<lb />
police searched the house, they<lb />
found photos of other girls in<lb />
bondage.<lb />

Cook, who is a lesbian,<lb />
attended the school in the mid-<lb />

Timeline for student fee increase decision<lb />
Ready for cool weather?<lb />
Process that will<lb />
determine the increase<lb />
KIMBERLY BELLAMY<lb />
SENIOR WHITER<lb />
A forum will be held on<lb />
Thursday, Nov. f, in Hendrix<lb />
Theater at 5S( p.m. to allow the<lb />
student body to learn more about<lb />
the possible increase in student<lb />
fees for 2O0B-2OO7.<lb />
Present at the forum will be<lb />
Derek Pantiel, president of the<lb />
association of student govern-<lb />
ments, board of governors mem-<lb />
bers and the student president of<lb />
all Hi UNC campuses.<lb />
Also present at the forum will<lb />
be M. Cole Jones, student body<lb />
president, Chris Welch, student<lb />
body treasurer and Jon Massachi,<lb />
speaker of the congress for SGA.<lb />
The forum is completely open<lb />
to all of the student body. Mem-<lb />
bers of SGA strongly encourage<lb />
that students come to the forum to<lb />
voice their opinions and to learn<lb />
more about the reason for the<lb />
increase and the process in which<lb />
an increase is decided.<lb />
Students that would like to<lb />
speak out about the possible<lb />
increase can do so once tine is<lb />
yielded to them at the forum but<lb />
they will not be allowed to actu-<lb />
ally vote during the forum.<lb />
SGA's goal is to get the increase<lb />
at a minimum without cutting<lb />
funding for university needs.<lb />
The increase is proposed to be<lb />
8,8 percent or lower but without<lb />
the backing of the congress and<lb />
the student body, the percentage<lb />
may be higher.<lb />
Jones said, "We recognize<lb />
that in order tor this policy to be<lb />
effective, there is a need for strong<lb />
political support to increase<lb />
appropriations for the university.<lb />
If this support is not actualized,<lb />
the pressure on the chancellors to<lb />
supplement funding shortfalls<lb />
Student have numerous ways<lb />
of gathering more information<lb />
about how much money they may<lb />
have to spend in tuition and fees<lb />
next year.<lb />
In addition to the forum, M.<lb />
Cole Jones composed a letter<lb />
(which appears after this article)<lb />
to the student body that gives<lb />
his views and opinions about the<lb />
increase. That letter is published<lb />
below this article.<lb />
Jones seems to be in favor of<lb />
the increase and feels that it will<lb />
allow students and their families<lb />
to be better prepared for increases<lb />
in tuition and fees for subsequent<lb />
years.<lb />
This plan w ill allow for stu-<lb />
dents and their families to be able<lb />
to financially plan for increases<lb />
in educational costs, and send a<lb />
clear message to lawmakers that<lb />
they must fund unmet needs of the<lb />
university system said Jones.<lb />
Jones, Welch and Stephanie<lb />
Coleman, an accountant in financial<lb />
services, have been working vig-<lb />
orously on the student fee process.<lb />
A summary of the figures,<lb />
explanations, views and outcomes<lb />
will be provided to the student<lb />
body on Tuesday, Nov. 7 in the<lb />
East Carolinian.<lb />
A proposal will also be dis-<lb />
tributed to Jones from Coleman<lb />
of the different units that are<lb />
requesting or not requesting and<lb />
increase according to Jones.<lb />
From there, the Chancellor's<lb />
Executive Council will receive the<lb />
proposal and meet on Nov. 8.<lb />
The Chancellor's Executive<lb />
Council is made up of the vice<lb />
chancellors of each division and<lb />

Allow me first to thank you for the opportunity<lb />
to share my perspective on the Tuition and Fees<lb />
Proposal students' perspective on the proposed<lb />
tuition policy plan. After careful consideration of<lb />
the recommended tuition policy, we feel that this<lb />
plan is the best solution for historically unpredict-<lb />
able tuition and fee rate increases. This plan will<lb />
allow for students and their families to be able to<lb />
financially plan for future increases in educational<lb />
costs, ana send a clear signal to lawmakers that<lb />
they must fund the unmet needs of the university<lb />
system. This plan also keeps necessary educa-<lb />
tional cost increases to a minimum for students<lb />
and their families, while still meeting the finan-<lb />
cial needs of our university system.<lb />
We recognize that in order for this policy to<lb />
be effective, there is a need for strong political<lb />
support to increase appropriations for the univer-<lb />
sity system. If this support is not actualized, the<lb />
pressure on chancellors to supplement funding<lb />
shortfalls will result in additional requests for<lb />
tuition increase exceptions. Despite tnis chal-<lb />
lenge, I know that through great leadership<lb />
and passionate advocacy this concern will never<lb />
become a reality.<lb />
University students throughout North Caro-<lb />

Subjective racism<lb />
A critique from another viewpoint<lb />
BRIDGET TODD<lb />
OPINION WRITER<lb />
Because it's such a complex issue, 1 tend to dislike<lb />
writing about race. Nevertheless, recently, I read an<lb />
opinion article by Stacy Dail about racism that I felt<lb />
compelled to respond to. Dail maintained that while<lb />
some racism takes the form of whites discriminating<lb />
against blacks, what happens more is blacks discrimi-<lb />
nating against whites.<lb />
She writes that while she's, "seen racism against<lb />
blacks to be true a few times she sees much more of the<lb />
reverse. She goes on to give several examples of her own<lb />
harsh brushes with racism - from being rudely chastised<lb />
for hugging her grandmother and not hugging a black<lb />
coworker, to watching a black classmate publicly scold a<lb />
white classmate for allegedly not wanting to sit next to<lb />
him and his black friends. While Dail is correct to point<lb />
out that blacks can be racist and that whites face racism,<lb />
she fails to address major flaws in her argument.<lb />
Is it any wonder that a white person might doubt<lb />
the existence and frequency of racism against minorities<lb />
and only "notice" racism that whites endure? I'm sure<lb />
that any person of color would probably tell you a very<lb />
different story about the regularity of racism against<lb />
minorities. The writer claimed that she was only "stat-<lb />
ing what she has observed This brings up the idea<lb />
that our individual experiences are not reality. Reality<lb />
is subjective and based on the individual. The reality<lb />
of racism is quite different for a black person than for<lb />
a white person. Thus, it's impossible to analyze racism<lb />
without recognizing that it's different for everybody.<lb />
I'm not saying racism against whites doesn't exist.<lb />
However, comparing the racism whites endure to the<lb />
racism blacks endure is insensitive and just reeks of<lb />
white social privilege. A rude black classmate scolds<lb />
a white girl and that's harsh racism? No one is beaten<lb />
by police officers because they are white. No one<lb />
is dragged behind a truck because they are white.<lb />
The article makes no distinction between degrees of<lb />
racism. While the events the author describes reflect a<lb />
type of racism, she fails to note that it's different and less<lb />
institutionalized that racism against blacks. White people<lb />
obviously face discrimination - but implying they face it<lb />
more than blacks, is inaccurate and diminishes the seri-<lb />
ousness of institutionalized racism faced by minorities.<lb />
The article went on to mention a recent episode of<lb />
"House" wherein a black patient was apprehensive about<lb />
taking his medicine because he feared the doctors were<lb />
testing it on blacks. The writer seems to dismiss this<lb />
as paranoia, but maybe if she knew that blacks were<lb />
the unknowing subjects of medical testing she would<lb />
understand. Medical staff sometimes purposefully<lb />
infected unknowing blacks with diseases to perform<lb />
laboratory tests. The Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment<lb />
being the largest reported incident. North Carolina<lb />
was one of the states leading the forced sterilization of<lb />
poor black women, a racist practice that endured until<lb />
the late 1970s. Given this history, the patient's fears are<lb />
more reasonable than the writer gives him credit for.<lb />
The article goes on to say that slavery is over and<lb />
"it's time to let go of the past Not an easy task when<lb />
countless blacks still face actual racism everyday. The<lb />
articles quotes the show "House writing that black<lb />
people "don't know the difference between racism and<lb />
everyone gets screwed According to the article's logic,<lb />
the thousands of disenfranchised blacks who were<lb />
denied their constitution-given right to vote in Florida<lb />
during the 2000 election should have just thought<lb />
to themselves, "well I guess everyone's bound to get<lb />
screwed over sooner or later, so let's just get over it<lb />
The article also maintains that its wrong that ECU<lb />
has a Black Student Union from which black students<lb />
benefit because this divides the races. Perhaps this is a<lb />
case of the writer simply not doing enough research.<lb />
Anyone of any race can and has joined to Black Student<lb />
Union since it's founding. The BSU performs numerous<lb />
service efforts, which benefit society as a whole. The<lb />
article asks why, since blacks "get their own student<lb />
union, should there not be one for the white students,<lb />
the Asians, Hispanics and any other race ECU has<lb />
Actually, that's exactly what already happens.<lb />
ECU boasts several different student organizations<lb />
for different cultural and racial groups. We have B-Glad<lb />
for gays, lesbians and their allies, the Arab Student<lb />
Union, the Asian Student Association, SALSA (Stu-<lb />
dent Association for Latino-Spanish Affairs) and East<lb />
Carolina Native American Organization. We have all<lb />
of these groups because, as any minority will probably<lb />
confirm, sometimes, larger blanket organizations like<lb />
the "normal Student Union as the author puts it, fail<lb />
to recognize the individual needs of individual groups.<lb />
Take another look at all the things these groups have<lb />
accomplished and tell them there is "no need for it<lb />
My biggest problem with this essay is more abstract.<lb />
The notion that someone needs to enlighten minorities of<lb />
the realities of racism is patronizing. I resent the thought<lb />
of someone taking on the task of telling black people what<lb />
their problems are, especially if they're not truly cogni-<lb />
zant of the nature of those problems in the first place.<lb />
JUST ASK JANE<lb />
Need advice? Want answers? Just ask Jane.<lb />
Dear Jane,<lb />
My roommate is suffering from depression and 1<lb />
have no idea how to help him. In brief, he has had a very<lb />
rough year romantically, financially and scholastically I<lb />
also strongly believe he suffers from some form of social<lb />
anxiety disorder. I have worried about him for a while,<lb />
but the symptoms fluctuate in severity, and when he<lb />
has a good week or two, it is easy to believe things will<lb />
get better. Recently, he told me he was depressed, and<lb />
jokingly scolded me for not noticing. He has also made<lb />
a few joking references to suicide. At first I just thought<lb />
he was a bum; he would sleep upwards of 14 hours a day<lb />
and seemed to only get up in order to eat and watch TV.<lb />
My own selfish annoyance at his behavior initially took<lb />
precedent over any concern, and still does to a large<lb />
degree today (it is hard to feel bad for someone who<lb />
is always too busy eating junk food and watching old<lb />
sitcoms to even clean up their own piles of filth). Due to<lb />
my personal nature, any advice I may offer comes off as<lb />
harsh or condescending (he has told me so in fact). With<lb />
all this in mind, what is the best way I can help?<lb />

are other minority-based<lb />
organizations on campus such<lb />
as SALSA, Arab Student Union,<lb />
Asian Student Association and<lb />
East Carolina Native American<lb />
Association. Make sure you do<lb />
your research next time you try<lb />
to single out BSU.<lb />
Where is the rest of this moose?<lb />

I wish college professors were<lb />

Not everyone is Christian<lb />
ALEX LAROCCA<lb />
OPINION WRITER<lb />
I am a student here at ECU, I am also one of a minor-<lb />
ity. I am one of those people who do not practice any<lb />
religion. Why? Well that is my choice and it is personal.<lb />
Now when I say it is personal, I mean just that<lb />
because I am a United States citizen and one of my most<lb />
basic rights is that it does not matter what my religion,<lb />
or lack thereof, is. What is my point? We are supposed<lb />
to be attending a secular public school and yet this is<lb />
not practiced.<lb />
If it is my choice at the university and in this country<lb />
not to practice any religion, then why so much pressure<lb />
from Christian organizations on campus? They have<lb />
even perfected ways into getting people to go to their<lb />
meetings. Many pamphlets are handed out on campus<lb />
promising free food or pool but what they forget to<lb />
mention is that it is Christian, except for the tiny print<lb />
on the bottom.<lb />
One great technique was at Purple Haze. A stand set-<lb />
up said, "Free Pepsi for answering two questions I pro-<lb />
ceeded to go up the counter and was asked "Do you believe<lb />
you are going to heaven?" and "What is your personal<lb />
relationship with Jesus and the bible?" And even though<lb />
I answered rudely, the chap actually gave me the soda.<lb />
And of course, there is my favorite organization on<lb />
campus: Campus Crusade for Christ. "Crusade?" 1 said<lb />
the first I ever heard of them, "Crusade against what?"<lb />
Well I don't know and I am scared to ask. How can there<lb />
be a group called Crusade at a public university in the 21st<lb />
century in a secular and, supposedly, reasonable coun-<lb />
try? I mean you cannot even defend'such a title. Crusade<lb />
really just means one thing is most human beings minds.<lb />
Now, it could be stated that it isn't the university but<lb />
simply Christianity's normal actions as a whole or even<lb />
just the student population. Well I would buy that if it<lb />
weren't for a personal incident in which the administra-<lb />
tion obviously held a religious biased.<lb />
Last year a friend of mine, we will call him<lb />
Oppressed, and I were sitting on the porch of one of<lb />
the dorms. It so happened that on that day those little<lb />
green Gideon's Bibles had been passed out. In order to<lb />
be funny and defiant, Oppressed set the bible on fire in<lb />
his hand. It was daring and it lasted too long but the<lb />
point was out and the shock was well deserved.<lb />
Later that night Oppressed almost had to fight an<lb />
apparent Christian, and the situation led to his actions<lb />
having to be put into a report. It was assumed that<lb />
someone would call us for the details of what happened,<lb />
the aforementioned opponent would have been written<lb />
up and nothing else. A month or so later, Oppressed<lb />
discovers that he will be kicked out of campus living,<lb />
which meant he could not live on campus anywhere. He<lb />
has one option, which is to write an appeal. He-wrote<lb />
and they didn't respond until about two or three weeks<lb />
before Christmas break, which was when he had to be<lb />
out by. It took them a while and they responded with a<lb />
resounding rejection to his appeal.<lb />
The reason? He was placing the entire dorm at risk<lb />
by fire. When 1 think about it again it seems reasonable<lb />
to say that paper can set concrete on fire, but of course<lb />
to actually become so enlightened I would have to hold<lb />
the Bible in very high esteem.<lb />
This is a public school and a free country. Everyone<lb />
has the same rights no matter your religion. If this<lb />
country is said to be founded on Christian principles, I<lb />
still do not care, since written in the first amendment<lb />
of the Bill of Rights no religion should ever have to be<lb />
pressed on me or offend my rights as an American.<lb />
Rebels with a cause<lb />
RYAN COBEY<lb />
OPINION WRITER<lb />
We've all been there. We've all felt that need, that<lb />
desire to be just a little different from everyone else.<lb />
Perhaps your little rebellion from society came during<lb />
your early teens when your mother wouldn't let you go<lb />
see an 11:30 showing of Scream with your best friends.<lb />
You felt that rush of freedom when you unobtrusively<lb />
opened the front door and snuck out, defying the law<lb />
that kept you down.<lb />
Or perhaps some of you still think you're rebelling<lb />
from society. Your spiked hair, long chains, baggy pants<lb />
and independent attitude are all you need in life. You<lb />
walk about campus as if the world owes you so much,<lb />
yet you drive home every weekend in your brand new<lb />
Mustang convertible. You only listen to underground<lb />
bands, because people who listen to mainstream bands<lb />
like Green Day and Blink 188 are simply "posers" to you.<lb />
You don't care what the teacher in your world history<lb />
class has to say at all because you already know more<lb />
than he does. This world just isn't good enough for you,<lb />
and because of that, you will attempt to isolate yourself<lb />
from the stereotypical society of pop culture.<lb />
Take a look around you, folks. If maybe once you<lb />
would open your eyes to the world, you would see that<lb />
there are thousands upon thousands of other people at<lb />
our school who think and act just like you. Go ahead,<lb />
look up some myspace.com profiles and tell me how<lb />
many people besides you are writing suicidal poems and<lb />
posting them on their blogs.<lb />
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it seems<lb />
that many people have become that which they were<lb />
rebelling against for so many years. They are, in<lb />
fact, the mainstream society of today whose thoughts<lb />
and feelings of independent isolationism are shared<lb />
by millions of young people around the country.<lb />
So, move over punks, and make way lor a new gen-<lb />
eration of rebellious individuals. They are few and far<lb />
between, but they are out there. They are the people<lb />
who take time out of their day to help an old man cross<lb />
the street, or give a little encouragement to someone<lb />
suffering from the stress of an upcoming exam. Some<lb />
of them are religious, but it's not necessarily a require-<lb />
ment for this particular rebellion. They don't wear<lb />
all black and they don't put five bottles of gel in their<lb />
hair just so they can stand out or make a statement.<lb />
These new rebels have a strange ability to put others<lb />
over themselves in specific situations. They listen to<lb />
music they like, instead of refusing to listen to something<lb />
simply because it's popular. On weekends, they might<lb />
even get up before one in the afternoon and volunteer<lb />
at the local soup kitchen or help landscape the yard of<lb />
a halfway house.<lb />
I'm proud to know just a few of these new rebels.<lb />
They are people I now consider my best friends because<lb />
they have changed the way I thought of the world and<lb />
in turn, made me a better person. They are rebels with<lb />
a cause, and a desire to actually reach out and befriend<lb />
others. I'm sorry to burst anyone's bubble, but if to start<lb />
truly rebelling against the norm, it is going to require<lb />
cleaning up your act.<lb />

UCF<lb />
I.Win the turnover battle:<lb />
UCF has struggled with turnovers this season. The Golden<lb />
Knights are 99th in turnover margin, nationally, with a<lb />
minus six and have 11 giveaways in their last three games<lb />
- all losses to Pittsburgh, Rice and Houston.<lb />
2.Mike Walker:<lb />
The Knights need to find their talented receiver and get the<lb />
ball in his hands as much as possible. Walker leads the team<lb />
and is fourth in the nation with 60 receptions. He torched<lb />
the Pirates for 110 yards and two touchdowns last season.<lb />
This year, Walker four of the team's 10 touchdown receptions<lb />
and over 43 percent of its receiving yards.<lb />
3.Pressure Pinkney:<lb />
ECU'S James Pinkney has been sacked less than every<lb />
quarterback in C-USA, with the exception of Tulsa's Paul<lb />
Smith. UCF's defense ranks 10 in the conference in sacks.<lb />
The Knights need to improve on that number to help out<lb />
a secondary giving up over 250 yards through the air per<lb />
game.Pinkney, Aundrae Allison and company.<lb />
Pirates look for third<lb />
straight win at UCF<lb />
RON CLEMENTS<lb />
SENIOR WRITER<lb />
Putting together back-to-back wins<lb />
for the first time this season, the ECU<lb />
football team will try to remain atop<lb />
Conference USA's East Division as it<lb />
travels to Central Florida on Saturday.<lb />
The Pirates (4-4,3-2 C-USA) will<lb />
take on a UCF team that has lost its<lb />
last three games by an average score<lb />
of 48-22. ECU head coach Skip Holtz<lb />
said the Golden Knights (2-6, 1-3 C-<lb />
USA) are a dangerous team, despite<lb />
their record.<lb />
"Their offense has been very<lb />
explosive said Holtz. "Central Florida<lb />
came out here and beat us 30-20<lb />
(last year). They also returned just<lb />
about everybody on the team from<lb />
a year ago. Our football team has<lb />
great respect for Central Florida and<lb />
understands the type of athletes that<lb />
they are playing with and the program<lb />
that they have. We just have to stay<lb />
focused on our task at hand right now<lb />
A season ago, the Golden<lb />
Knights spoiled ECU's homecom-<lb />
ing with their 30-20 win en route to<lb />
a berth in the C-USA Championship<lb />
game. While Holtz said spoiling<lb />
UCF's homecoming this season<lb />
as the incoming foe is not some-<lb />
thing he puts a lot<lb />
of thought<lb />
into, it is on the conscience of the<lb />
players. Junior receiver Phillip<lb />
Henry said it adds some "extra<lb />
motivation<lb />
"Any time you go up against<lb />
a team on the road, you gotta do<lb />
something to get yourself moti-<lb />
vated Henry said. "They came<lb />
here and spoiled it for us last year<lb />
and we felt like we could've won.<lb />
This year, we hope that it can be<lb />
a different story<lb />
The Knights are led again, on<lb />
offense, by quarterback Steven Mof-<lb />
fett and all-conference candidates<lb />
Mike Walker and Kevin Smith.<lb />
Smith is no Silent Bob on the<lb />
field, as the super sophomore has<lb />
rushed 791 yards and six scores in<lb />
seven games and is averaging five<lb />
yards per carry.<lb />
"They're gonna pound it at you and<lb />
they're gonna play-action pass you<lb />
Holtz said of the UCF offense. "That's<lb />
what they do. They get your safeties<lb />
involved and reduce the game to a one-<lb />
on-one game out on the perimeter,<lb />
and that's where they're very good<lb />
Walker is a big reason the<lb />
Golden Knights are good on the<lb />
perimeter.<lb />
The 6-2 senior lit up ECU last<lb />
year with a 110-yard, two-touch-<lb />
down performance and Walker is<lb />
putting up impressive numbers<lb />
again this season. The Orlando<lb />
native has 60 catches for 766 yards!<lb />
He has triple the catches and yard-<lb />
age of Javid James, who is second<lb />
on the team in receptions,<lb />
"He's got great size and<lb />

1. Win the turnover battle:<lb />
ECU turned the ball over six times in the 30-20 loss to UCF<lb />
last year. The Pirates nearly had turnovers cost them against<lb />
Southern Miss last week. The Pirates need to do a better job<lb />
of ball security against a team with 11 giveaways in its last<lb />
three games.<lb />
2. Run the ball:<lb />
UCF is allowing over 178 yards on the ground, good for 10th in<lb />
Conference USA and 104th nationally. The Pirates have man-<lb />
aged a combined 138 rushing yards in their last two games,<lb />
with an average of 1.9 yards per carry. ECU must get better<lb />
productivity out of the rushing game to keep the ball away<lb />
from the UCF offense.<lb />
3.Cover the kick:<lb />
Southern Miss did a good job in returns a week ago in estab-<lb />
lishing field position. The Pirates need to do a better job of<lb />
covering punts and kicks.<lb />
"I think East Carolina has really improved since<lb />
a year ago. They're a much bettor football<lb />
team. They're throwing the ball extremely<lb />
well, 260 yards a game. Their quarterback<lb />
hit 31-of-40 for almost 400 yards last week<lb />
against SMU. They're very multiple on offense;<lb />
a lot of formations and some skilled athletes<lb />
"I think it's a lot more of a rivalry for us than it<lb />
is for them. They've beat us 84-17 in the last<lb />
two years. When you're winning, those aren't<lb />
really rivalry games. Rivalries are the people<lb />
who've been beating you. I know Southern<lb />
Miss has a lot of success and it's no surprise<lb />
why coach Bower has been so successful It's<lb />
going to be a heck of a challenge for our team<lb />
to have to play a really good Southern Miss<lb />
team, but to have to play them on the road<lb />

Nov. 1. This is the first time an<lb />
ECU player has won this presti-<lb />

named to the NSCAA, Campbell<lb />
was named to the Soccer Buzz<lb />
Elite Team of the Week, an award<lb />
given to the best players in the<lb />
nation for that week.<lb />
Over the last week Camp-<lb />
bell held UTEP and Colorado<lb />
College scoreless during 1(9<lb />
minutes of play. The dominant<lb />
play helped ECU claim two wins<lb />
and boost its seeding going into<lb />
the Conference USA tourna-<lb />
ment On Friday, she tied the<lb />
single-season school record with<lb />
her seventh shutout by record-<lb />
ing a 2-0 victory over UTEP.<lb />
ECU sophomore defender<lb />
Nicole Moore was the first Pirate<lb />
to be named to the Soccer Buzz<lb />
Team of the Week for her play<lb />
S during the week of Aug. 28.<lb />
During that time, Campbell was<lb />
in the midst three consecutive<lb />
shutouts against in-state oppo-<lb />
nents.<lb />
Campbell's excellent season<lb />
has moved her up in the ECU<lb />
goalkeeping record books. Camp-<lb />
bell has recorded seven shutouts<lb />
to tie her for first place for a<lb />
single season. Her career goals<lb />
against average is currently<lb />
1.225 which is good for first place<lb />
all-time In addition, her current<lb />
0.67 goals against average for<lb />
the season beats the previous<lb />
mark of 1.10 set in'8003. Camp-<lb />
bell has played all but 65:06<lb />
in goal for ECU this season.<lb />
Several members of the ECU<lb />

recognition on both the C-USA<lb />
All-Conference Teams and the<lb />
C-USA All-Academic Team.<lb />
Junior defender Kat Norris<lb />
was named first team all-confer-<lb />
ence while sophomore Campbell<lb />
was a C-USA second team selec-<lb />

postseason honor for Norris,<lb />
as she was named second-team<lb />
all-conference last season. Mid-<lb />
fielder Sarah Kirkley represents<lb />
the Pirates as a member of the<lb />
C-USA All-Freshman squad.<lb />
Norris is a mainstay on the<lb />
ECU defense. She has started<lb />
all IK games this season and has<lb />
recorded two assists.<lb />
Kirkley is a spark in the Lady<lb />
Pirate midfield. As a freshman,<lb />
she currently ranks first on the<lb />
team in assists (10) and second<lb />
in points (1).<lb />
Moore, an exercise physiol-<lb />

USA All-Academic Team. Along<lb />
with Erin Johnson of Marshall,<lb />
Moore is the only member of<lb />
the team that boasts a perfect<lb />
4.0 GPA.<lb />
The all-academic team con-<lb />

THE EAST CAROLINIAN SPORTS<lb />
PAGE Bs<lb />
UCF<lb />
continued from Bl<lb />
speed Holtz said about Walker.<lb />
"He is their go-to guy. I know<lb />
both Steven Moffett and Kyle<lb />
Israel very well and they are<lb />
very talented young men that<lb />
throw the ball very well. They<lb />
execute their offense extremely<lb />
well. It is definitely something<lb />
that we are going to get attacked<lb />
with. We are really going to have<lb />
to challenge our secondary and<lb />
we're going to have to be really<lb />
smart with our decisions. They<lb />
have been very successful with<lb />
it with a great receiver and two<lb />
very good quarterbacks<lb />
Walker and the UCF aerial<lb />
attack will contend with an ECU<lb />
secondary that is second on the<lb />
conference in interceptions with<lb />
10, including Travis Williams'<lb />
game-clinching pick in overtime<lb />
last week at Southern Miss.<lb />
"A lot of the credit for our<lb />
defense goes to Greg Hudson, Rick<lb />
Smith, Rock Roggeman and Donnie<lb />
Thompson Holtz said. "Those<lb />
are four great football coaches and<lb />
they've done an unbelievable job<lb />
with this football team<lb />
ECU linebacker Danny Muh-<lb />
wezi said he knew before the<lb />
season began that the defense,<lb />
now ranked second in C-USA in<lb />
pass defense and total defense,<lb />
would be good.<lb />
"Honestly, and I'm dead seri-<lb />
ous, the way these coaches have<lb />
us focused, it was kind of like we<lb />
knew something that fans and<lb />
other people and other teams<lb />
didn't know said Muhwezi,<lb />
whose 22nd birthday was Hal-<lb />
loween. "The way we were being<lb />
coached and how we looked on<lb />
film compared to other teams, I<lb />
knew from the beginning that we<lb />
were gonna be good<lb />
While the defense has been<lb />
steadily improving each week,<lb />
the offense continues its incon-<lb />
sistency. The Pirates have scored<lb />
35, 10, 31, 10, 38 and 20 points<lb />
in their last six games, going<lb />
4-2 in those contests. While the<lb />
offense did not look great against<lb />
Southern Miss, Holtz said they<lb />
did what he wanted them do.<lb />
"That was not a stat game<lb />
Holtz said of the 20-17 overtime<lb />
win over the Golden Eagles. "I<lb />
thought, for what we asked the<lb />
offense to do, I thought they did<lb />
a pretty good job. I called a very<lb />
conservative attack, but when<lb />
we needed a drive, they came<lb />
through<lb />
To bolster the running game,<lb />
Holtz is auditioning some bigger<lb />
defensive players this week for<lb />
the goal line and short-yardage<lb />
packages. To add depth on the<lb />
offensive line, the Pirates also<lb />
lifted the redshirt off of fresh-<lb />
man guard Sean Allen, who saw<lb />
significant playing time at against<lb />
Southern Miss.<lb />
ECU's offense ranks fifth in the<lb />
conference, right behind UCF. The<lb />
Golden Knights are averaging over<lb />
370 yards per game, but are dead<lb />
last in points per game, thanks to a<lb />
minus six turnover margin.<lb />
Junior receiver Steven Rogers<lb />
said he is confident the defense<lb />
will do its part in stopping Walker,<lb />
Smith and the rest of the Knights<lb />
while the ECU offense gets to face<lb />
a defense surrendering 429 yards<lb />
per game. Only Rice's defense is<lb />
worse in C-USA.<lb />
"Our defense is playing real<lb />
good and I have confidence that<lb />
when they go on the field, they'll<lb />
either get the ball back for us or<lb />
hold them to a stop Rogers said.<lb />
"Our offense should be able to pro-<lb />
duce points. If the offense executes<lb />
and puts up points, we should<lb />
come out with a victory<lb />
Henry, who is second on the<lb />
Pirates with 24 catches, knows<lb />
ECU should be able to score often<lb />
against a UCF defense allowing<lb />
33 points per game.<lb />
"We think we can put up<lb />
good points against them Henry<lb />
said. "They got good guys at the<lb />
safeties and a good all-American<lb />
corner, so it's going to be a good<lb />
challenge for us, but I think if we<lb />
go out and do what we do best, we<lb />
shouldn't have any problems<lb />

Band Spotlight: Pico vs. Island Trees<lb />
Listen and become<lb />

STACY DAIL<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Many bands come and go<lb />
through downtown Greenville's<lb />
clubs, but not many make an<lb />
impression and leave their audi-<lb />
ence begging for them to come<lb />
back.<lb />
Pico vs. Island Trees is an<lb />
exception to this not-so-good<lb />
trend, and will be gracing the Red<lb />
Rooster with their unforgettable<lb />
music on Nov. 16 at 9 p.m.<lb />
The band is about to start its<lb />
mini-tour throughout North Caro-<lb />
lina and South Carolina, and will<lb />
be headlining at clubs in Charles-<lb />
ton, Atlantic Beach, Wilmington<lb />
and their hometown of Raleigh.<lb />
After a rough start, the band<lb />
is finally back in action and cur-<lb />
rently recording their album that<lb />
has gotten the attention of many<lb />
major record labels.<lb />
This isn't a surprise, given that<lb />
the band is working with Grammy<lb />
Award winning producers David<lb />
Kershenbaum and Greg Collins,<lb />
who have worked with big bands<lb />
U2 and Matchbox 20, as well as<lb />
Gwen Stefani.<lb />
The band first started when<lb />
members Jeremy and Bryan<lb />
decided that they wanted to play<lb />
in their middle school talent show.<lb />
see PICO page B5<lb />
By popular demand, Pico vs. Island Trees will be performing at The Red Rooster Nov. 16 at 9 p.m.<lb />

AARON BORREGO<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
On Sept. 29, the movie Open<lb />
Season roared into theaters across<lb />
the nation. Characters include the<lb />
famous voices of Martin Lawrence,<lb />
Debra Messing and everyone's<lb />
favorite boy toy, Ashton Kutcher.<lb />
Obviously everyone recognizes<lb />
Lawrence from "Martin Messing<lb />

What you should know about<lb />
this 99 minute film is that it is much<lb />
more of the same animal versus<lb />
man story that we have seen repeat-<lb />
edly the past few years. While this<lb />
movie does sport some very funny<lb />
moments, it seems as though I have<lb />
seen it before.<lb />
This movie is very entertaining<lb />
initially and seems to have problems<lb />
with stereotyping characters into<lb />
roles, but I do find that this movie is<lb />
too bland and maybe a bit too clever<lb />
for any children to be watching it.<lb />
I do like the light-hearted<lb />
approach of some of the characters<lb />
such as McSquizzy, a Scottish squir-<lb />

temper when it conies to his trees.<lb />

Art student holds senior exhibition<lb />
Wheeler to showcase art during<lb />
senior show at Greenville<lb />
Museum of Art<lb />
STACY DAIL<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
For most ECU students, having a solo exhibition<lb />
at the local museum seems like a dream, but for senior<lb />
Kelly Wheeler, that dream is now a reality.<lb />
Wheeler will host her Senior Exhibition at the<lb />
Greenville Museum of Art, which will showcase the<lb />
work she has accomplished within the last five years<lb />
while working with ECU's School of Art and Design.<lb />
Wheeler's show, t it led " Rehearing an Identity is com-<lb />
posed of ceramic and mixed media artwork, and focuses<lb />
on illustrating her life and all that she has overcome.<lb />
As a child, she was diagnosed with leukemia,<lb />
leaving her challenged by many obstacles that most<lb />
children could never imagine facing.<lb />
"When I was diagnosed with cancer, I couldn't<lb />
really do anything physical, so one of my teachers<lb />
brought me a pack of markers she said. "My interest<lb />
in art kept growing, and I started painting too. My<lb />
work in this show is about my life experiences and<lb />
characterizes who I have become as an individual<lb />
Although this show is her largest yet, Wheeler<lb />
isn't a stranger to the world of art exhibitions. Ever<lb />
since 2002, she has participated in the School of Art<lb />
and Design's undergraduate show, and her work was<lb />
showcased in a show at the Emerge Gallery last year.<lb />
While getting ready for her exhibition, Wheeler is<lb />
also busy pursuing her master's degree in art therapy.<lb />
After graduation she hopes to work at a hospital with<lb />
children who have been diagnosed with cancer.<lb />
Wheeler admits that it can sometimes be overwhelm-<lb />
ing working on a solo show while still being a full-time<lb />
student trying to earn her degree. However, she under-<lb />
stands that all her hard work is worth it and has some<lb />
advice for students new to ECU's School of Art and Design.<lb />
"Work as hard as you can and stay focused on<lb />
what you want to say and how you want to say it. Take<lb />
every bit of advice and insight that your professors<lb />
and colleagues hold, and be grateful for what you are<lb />
given and achieve Wheeler says.<lb />
Wheeler's solo exhibition opened Oct. 31 and will<lb />
show through Nov. 7 at the Greenville Museum of Art<lb />
located on Evans Street across from Ham's. All ECU<lb />
students are encouraged to come out and see what all<lb />
the artists have accomplished.<lb />

Robert Randolph<lb />
and the family band<lb />
It's all in the family<lb />
AARON BORREGO<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Colorblind'is the newest release<lb />
from Robert Randolph and it is<lb />
critically acclaimed everywhere for<lb />
good reason. This band possesses<lb />
a blend of carefully crafted music<lb />
featuring elements of funk, soul,<lb />
classic rock and psychedelic rock.<lb />
Major influences can be heard<lb />
from Jimi Hendrix guitar riffs to<lb />
the soul sounds of Stevie Wonder.<lb />
Furthermore, Sly Stone obvi-<lb />
ously has influenced these guys in<lb />
many ways.<lb />
Speaking of other influences on<lb />
this band, there is a wealth of musi-<lb />
cal collaborations presented on<lb />
this album including Leela James,<lb />
Dave Matthews and Eric Clapton.<lb />
Clapton has been a big influ-<lb />
ence upon the band since first<lb />
touring with them a few years<lb />
back, Clapton has recorded an<lb />
incredible solo effort in the song<lb />
"Jesus Is Just Alright You may<lb />
recognize this song as it used to<lb />
be performed by the Byrds and<lb />
namely, Eric Clapton himself.<lb />
The album explodes upon<lb />
the scene with its first track<lb />
titled, "Ain't Nothing Wrong<lb />
With That Booming drums and<lb />
infectious lyrics accompany the<lb />
sing-along, which is sure to fire<lb />
up any crowd.<lb />
The song people would cur-<lb />
rently recognize would be "Thrill<lb />
of It which is currently playing<lb />
on countless radio stations and<lb />
music channels nationwide.<lb />
The talent of the band as musi-<lb />

Ryan Adams produces new Willie Nelson album<lb />
'Songbird' continues<lb />
2006's folk-rock<lb />
comeback<lb />
JOHN BOSCO<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Maybe I'm the first to notice<lb />
it, and I doubt I am, but it seems<lb />
like there's something a little more<lb />
than coincidental in this year's<lb />
releases from Neil Young, Bob<lb />
Dylan and now, Willie Nelson.<lb />
While I doubt it's just for the<lb />
money, it does look like these folk<lb />
artists are finally getting more<lb />
credit as living legends, and "sell-<lb />
ing out" at the same time.<lb />
Just look at Dylan's recent<lb />
iPod campaign, his agreement<lb />
with major coffee chain Starbucks<lb />
to release Live at the Gaslight 1962<lb />
exclusively for 18 months and his<lb />
huge Martin Scorsese documen-<lb />
tary No Direction Home.<lb />
But at least the music isn't<lb />
turning into complete crap.<lb />
Anyway, this is about Nelson's<lb />
album, not Dylan's bad old-age deci-<lb />
sions (and regardless, for now, he can<lb />
still out-perform anyone half his age).<lb />
It seems like Nelson may have<lb />
nude one of his ow n old-age decisions<lb />
by heading in to the studio with North<lb />
Carolina-born musician Ryan Adams<lb />
as his producer on Songbird.<lb />
After listening to the album, it's<lb />
obvious that Adams had a huge say<lb />
on the songs and their arrangements.<lb />
Rather than having Nelson's<lb />
traditional band back him, Adams<lb />
has substituted them in favor of his<lb />
own backing band, The Cardinals.<lb />
It's this decision that incites<lb />
criticism of Adams' production<lb />
skills and value to the record as a<lb />
forward thinking sound for Nelson.<lb />
Songbird is the convergence of<lb />
two sounds, Adams' aggressive,<lb />
electric alt-country sound and<lb />
Nelson's more traditional country<lb />
and folk influences.<lb />
While tneopening track "Rainy Day<lb />
Blues" (easily the album's best track) sets up<lb />
a hopeful, bluesy sound for Nelson's raspy,<lb />
sprawling vocals, the rest of tile album is<lb />
about as predktabk' as tin flip of a coin.<lb />
The album's second track,<lb />
"Songbird ruins the brilliant<lb />
overtones set up by "Rainy Day<lb />
Blues" and dowses the album with<lb />
an opening arrangement that<lb />
sounds like it should be a tune off<lb />
of Adams' 2001 release Gold.<lb />
And that's not the only track<lb />
on Songbird that sounds like it<lb />
should be off a Ryan Adams album.<lb />
Nelson's cover of Leonard Cohen's<lb />
"Hallelujah" is a good track, but it<lb />
suffers from a heavy case of overpro-<lb />
duction - too many layers, too much<lb />
going on, and the choir is an unneces-<lb />
sary, cheap shot at Nelson's solid vocal<lb />
performance on the track.<lb />
And anyway, Jeff Buckley did a<lb />
far better stripped-down, bare bones<lb />
version that would have been great to<lb />
hear Nelson and his guitar give a try.<lb />

OPEN SEASON continued from A4<lb />
upon playing in intimate arenas<lb />
and concert halls for a few years,<lb />
which has solidified them as one<lb />
of the best live musical acts to see.<lb />
On this album, though, they<lb />
tried to capture something more<lb />
than just their great live per-<lb />
formances. They tried to cap-<lb />
ture a great studio album effort<lb />
instead of playing to their already<lb />
stout live following on their<lb />
records. This is a new idea for<lb />
the band, not to mention, and a<lb />
completely new process for them<lb />
as studio recorders.<lb />
It all goes back to a conver-<lb />
sation that the band had with<lb />
Carlos Santana who advised<lb />
them to try making a studio<lb />
album that people will remember<lb />
and listen to forever. Because<lb />
Santana is a rock god, I imagine<lb />
he has some credibility.<lb />
The album is a walk through<lb />
the R&B classics of old, while<lb />
maintaining a new twist on an<lb />
already established sound. The<lb />
pedal steel is an instrument nor-<lb />
mally found in country music and<lb />
is famous for the "twang" sound<lb />
it produces that lends some com-<lb />
plexity to this album.<lb />
The complexity is further<lb />
illustrated in the many different<lb />
sounds of instruments and ele-<lb />
ments that mix to create many<lb />
of these songs. There are many<lb />
things going on in the songs that<lb />
are hard to follow, but everything<lb />
seems to flow seamlessly.<lb />
I give this album an A for<lb />
its great musical background<lb />
and intelligent song writing.<lb />
This is sure to be one of the best<lb />
albums for a long time to come<lb />
and you should check this one out<lb />
for yourself.<lb />

After performing "Today" by<lb />
the Smashing Pumpkins, they<lb />
decided that maybe they liked the<lb />
music world.<lb />
After recruiting other band<lb />
mates, Pico vs. Island Trees<lb />
formed and spent the next two<lb />
years playing in various garages<lb />
and even at pool parties, which<lb />
was considered a big deal to them<lb />
at the time.<lb />
The boys decided to get seri-<lb />
ous and hired a manager to help<lb />
them record their first album<lb />
entitled Just Wail. Unfortunately,<lb />
this is exactly what the boys did<lb />
with their music career, and each<lb />
headed off to different colleges in<lb />
the Southeast.<lb />
As musicians starving to per-<lb />
form, the boys of Pico vs. Island<lb />
Trees became bored with school<lb />
and decided to take the leap to Los<lb />
Angeles to really concentrate on<lb />
their music careers.<lb />
Soon, the band was discovered<lb />
by producer David Kershenbaum<lb />
on XM radio's Unsigned Artists<lb />
Channel, and immediately scored<lb />
a record deal with Rebel Yell<lb />
Kntertainment.<lb />
The band has recorded 18<lb />
songs in L.A some of which<lb />
will appear on their upcoming<lb />
untitled album. While working<lb />
on the album at Conway Studios,<lb />
the hand was sure to get a little<lb />
inspiration from the fact that big<lb />
names like Maroon .0 and Chris-<lb />

their albums right next door.<lb />

Lawrence really didn't provide<lb />
anything to this already shaky story<lb />
outside of having a weird trained<lb />
bear relationship with a park ranger.<lb />
This relationship could potentially<lb />
spark the ire of many for being a bit<lb />
"too close" and unusual.<lb />
The overall highlights of this<lb />
film are the Scottish squirrel mafia<lb />
throwing nuts, a strange wiener<lb />
dog, a hyperactive slightly brain-<lb />
damaged deer and a creepy porcu-<lb />
pine. The story really doesn't offer<lb />
anything beside this: Hunters are<lb />
had and when the animals band<lb />
together, they defeat the hunters.<lb />
Even as bad as the overplayed<lb />
story is, the funny moments are<lb />
very funny. The deer and his miss-<lb />
ing antler provide most, if not all,<lb />
of these moments. I just wish that<lb />
the humor was enough to call this<lb />
a movie worth watching.<lb />
There are some moments of adult<lb />
humor that could potentially throttle<lb />
young minds into asking the dreaded<lb />
question, "What does that mean?"<lb />
For the most part, this movie<lb />
just may not be original enough<lb />
to warrant anything more than a<lb />
video rental.<lb />
Overall, I give the movie a grade<lb />
of a "B" for its funny moments and<lb />
idatable characters. However; I<lb />
would like to emphasize that its ste-<lb />

plot had a hand in keeping this movie<lb />
