Students write letters to their friends,<lb />
Over 154 campuses<lb />
participated, $10<lb />
million raised last year<lb />
ADELINE TRENTO<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Last Thursday, Oct. 26, ECU<lb />
hosted a letter writing event as<lb />
part of Up 'til Dawn, a fund-<lb />
raising campaign for St. Jude<lb />
Children's Research Hospital.<lb />
The nationwide fund-raiser,<lb />
which aims to unite students with<lb />
the community and raise money<lb />
for the children at St. Jude, takes<lb />
place on 154 campuses across<lb />
the U.S. and has raised more<lb />
than $10 million for St. Jude.<lb />
Students who participated in<lb />
family and neighbors in an attempt to<lb />
the fundraiser were organized into<lb />
groups of about six people, and<lb />
each group member was asked to<lb />
send 50 letters to friends, family<lb />
and neighbors in an attempt to<lb />
receive donations for St. Jude.<lb />
Students were asked to sign and<lb />
address pre-written letters to<lb />
people they knew in hopes that<lb />
their friends and family would<lb />
donate whatever they could to<lb />
the cause.<lb />
Most students volunteered<lb />
their time to help with this event<lb />
because fundraising is critical<lb />
to the success of St. Jude. The<lb />
research hospital relies on dona-<lb />
tions because they offer free treat-<lb />
ment to sick children all over the<lb />
world.<lb />
St. Jude is also the only pedi-<lb />
request donations for the hospital.<lb />
atric cancer research center where<lb />
families are never asked to pay for<lb />
treatments not covered by their<lb />
insurance, and families with-<lb />
out insurance are never asked<lb />
to pay, according to Stjude.org.<lb />
Many sororities, clubs, honor<lb />
students and faculty members, as<lb />
well as groups of students just<lb />
wanting to help, participated in<lb />
this event. Students who took part<lb />
in this fund-raiser did so because<lb />
they thought it was a great cause.<lb />
"I decided to volunteer for this<lb />
event because I want to work with<lb />
children one day said Jamie Dan-<lb />
iels, junior elementary education<lb />
major. "St. Jude is an amazing place<lb />

Make a Difference Day is a<lb />
nationwide initiative that was<lb />
started by the news publication<lb />
USA Today. The fourth Saturday<lb />
of every October is the desig-<lb />

some folks who have never vol-<lb />
unteered before said Denius.<lb />
Students were placed in five<lb />
different service groups, each<lb />
going to different areas around<lb />
the Greenville community. These<lb />
areas were Third Street School,<lb />
Habitat for Humanity, Epees Rec-<lb />
reation Center and the Humane<lb />
Society of Eastern Carolina.<lb />
Once organized into their<lb />
designated groups, students were<lb />
bussed out to their respective<lb />
locations where they participated<lb />
in a variety of different activi-<lb />
ties dependent on their location.<lb />
According to the ECU Vol-<lb />
unteer Web site, ecu.eduvol-<lb />

That's what the local bat remover<lb />
goes by. George Perkins often<lb />
makes public appearances in the<lb />
caped crusader's costume and<lb />
drives his own Batmobile, a retro-<lb />
styled Chrysler Prowler with bat<lb />

as Bat Cave 2, hear the "Batman"<lb />

said Tripp Pouieroy, who moved to<lb />
the town of 17,000 in 19H9 to work<lb />
for Habitat for Humanity, which<lb />
has its global headquarters here.<lb />
In a letter to city officials, Harris<lb />
said free-tailed bats have apparently<lb />
expanded their range and number<lb />
in Georgia and have adapted to<lb />
roosting in buildings in many towns<lb />
across the state. There are many<lb />
other bat species, but it's the free-<lb />
tail variety that seem to be causing<lb />
the most problems here.<lb />
CDC probing salmo-<lb />
nella outbreak in 18 states<lb />
(AP) A salmonella outbreak<lb />
potentially linked to produce has<lb />
sickened at least 172 people in 18<lb />
states, health otFicials said Monday.<lb />
Health officials think the bac-<lb />
teria may have spread through<lb />
some form of produce - the list of<lb />
suspects includes tomatoes. But<lb />
the illnesses have not been tied<lb />
to any specific product, chain,<lb />
restaurants or supermarkets.<lb />
No one has died in the outbreak,<lb />
which stems from a common<lb />
form of salmonella bacteria.<lb />
Eleven people have been hos-<lb />
pitalized, health officials said.<lb />
"We're very early in the inves-<lb />
tigation said Dave Daigle, a<lb />
spokesman for the U.S. Centers for<lb />
Disease Control and Prevention.<lb />
The most serious outbreak, first<lb />
reported in September, involved<lb />
spinach tainted with E. coli bac-<lb />
teria that killed three people<lb />
and sickened more than 200.<lb />
Health officials estimate that more<lb />
than 1.4 million cases of salmonel-<lb />
losis occur in the U.S. each year.<lb />
About 1.3 million of those cases<lb />
come from food, Braden said.<lb />

The girl's parents were allegedly<lb />

Later letters come from<lb />

Love's memoir hits the shelves<lb />
a week after her late husband,<lb />
singer-songwriter-guitarist Kurt<lb />
Cobain displaced Elvis at No. 1<lb />
on Forbess list of the top-earning<lb />
dead celebrities, Newsweek notes.<lb />
Part of that comes from Love, who<lb />
sold her 25 percent share in the<lb />

$50 million.<lb />

SERVICE<lb />
continued from Al<lb />
Students gather together to watch educational films that explore the history and culture of Latin America<lb />
Two films shown in<lb />
inaugural series<lb />
ZACK HILL<lb />
STAFF WRITKR<lb />
The first leg of the new His-<lb />
panic Film Series wrapped up<lb />
Thursday night in Hate 2011 with<lb />
a showing of Illummados pur el<lb />
Furgo(Enlightened by Fire), a film<lb />
about the conflict between Argen-<lb />
tina and Britain in the 1980s. It<lb />
was preceded in the series by a<lb />
September showing of Haheros, a<lb />
documentary about Cuban rafters<lb />
coming to America.<lb />
The series is being put together<lb />
by Juan Daneri and Jennifer Valko,<lb />
both professors in the depart-<lb />
ment of foreign languages and<lb />
literature s Spanish division.<lb />
They said that it is the first<lb />
Hispanic film series that they have<lb />
heard of at ECU<lb />
"We thought it was necessary<lb />
because of not only the changing<lb />
demographics in the state, but<lb />
also the fact that the university is<lb />
feeing more students with a His-<lb />
panic background said Daneri.<lb />
"It's a way to get people to<lb />
learn about other cultures not only<lb />
in terms of their differences, but<lb />
also the similarities and shared<lb />
experiences said Valko.<lb />
Before each screening, a pro-<lb />
feasor or faculty member gives<lb />
some background information and<lb />
puts the film in a context in which<lb />
the students can relate Afterward,<lb />
discussion is encouraged, though<lb />
not required.<lb />
"We are careful to avoid turn-<lb />
ing this into a classroom situation<lb />
Daneri said.<lb />
So far, turnout has exceeded<lb />
their expectations, with the<lb />
upstairs classroom in the Bate<lb />
building strained to hold the 40<lb />
to 50 students who have shown<lb />
up each time. Students from Pitt<lb />
Community College as well as<lb />
members of the Greenville com-<lb />
munity have also attended the<lb />
films.<lb />
Valko and Daneri hope that the<lb />
;<lb />
films expand students' perspec-<lb />
tives on Hispanic culture.<lb />
"A lot of people have a fairly<lb />
limited idea of what Hispanic cul-<lb />
ture is. They usually think about<lb />
it in terms of a single country.<lb />
Latin America is very diverse<lb />
and there are lot of things like<lb />
immigration, war and economic<lb />
and environmental issues that are<lb />
important both there and here<lb />
Daneri said.<lb />
The series will pick up again in<lb />
the spring semester, though dates<lb />
have not yet been set. Valko and<lb />
Daneri hope that the showings<lb />
will continue to be a success so<lb />
that funding may become available<lb />
to bring in a guest speaker, such as<lb />
a Hispanic filmmaker.<lb />
In the meantime, they are sat-<lb />
isfied with their progress so far.<lb />
"We want people to reflect<lb />
on what they've seen, and also<lb />
see some very good films Valko<lb />
said.<lb />

WITN-TVmaking<lb />
the wrong decision<lb />
ERIC GILMORE<lb />
SPORTS EDITOR<lb />
The local NBC affiliate claims to be, "The<lb />
official television station of the ECU Pirates<lb />
Turn to the tubes this weekend and "the offi-<lb />
cial station" will be carrying Tar Heel football<lb />
during ECU's game at UCF.<lb />
Notre Dame has a national television con-<lb />
tract with NBC, the only of its kind, which<lb />
conflicts with the local interest of the WITN<lb />
affiliate. Notre Dame hosts UNC, which<lb />
overlaps with the ECU game, forcing WITN<lb />
management to make a critical decision. After<lb />
weighing their options, WITN has chosen<lb />
to broadcast a tape delay of the ECU-UCF<lb />
game starting after their 6 p.m. local news.<lb />
In other words, it values a probable blowout<lb />
between No. 11 Notre Dame and a 1-7 UNC<lb />
team over a pivotal conference match up with<lb />
an upstart Pirate squad looking for its first-ever<lb />
conference championship.<lb />
Notre Dame and UNC kickoff at 2:30 p.m.<lb />
while ECU-UCF start at 4 p.m. What if Travis<lb />
Williams has to make another game-saving inter-<lb />
ception in the end zone? While it's happening<lb />
live, ECU fans will be watching Marvin Dough-<lb />
erty deliver a Doppler 3000 weather forecast.<lb />
Some official station.<lb />
WITN has a contract with the Pirate Sports<lb />
Television Network to broadcast four games<lb />
each season. The agreement, which has been in<lb />
place since 1992, has aired nearly 100 games<lb />
throughout eastern North Carolina.<lb />
Billy Weaver, the WITN sports director,<lb />
serves as color analyst while weekend sports<lb />
anchor Brian Meador reports from the sideline.<lb />
When College Sports Television signed a con-<lb />
tractual agreement to control the majority of<lb />
television rights, WITN lost options.<lb />
CSTV, which is only available on digital<lb />
cable locally, has nationally broadcast the<lb />
Sept. 9 game at Navy, Oct. 7 contest against<lb />
Virginia and Oct. 28 game at Southern Miss.<lb />
"The UCF game was not on the original<lb />
schedule that we had set up with ECU said<lb />
WITN General Manager Mike Weeks in a radio<lb />
interview on Monday. "We'd like to have all away<lb />
games if we could because that would be of inter-<lb />
est to the largest group of potential fans<lb />
Weeks said WITN management never con-<lb />
sidered switching games midway through, saying<lb />
the option was "unacceptable WITN brass<lb />
interrupted the Southern Cal-Notre Dame last<lb />
season, a game with national interest last season<lb />
to start ECU's game at SMU. USC and Notre<lb />
Dame were ranked in the top-10 while neither<lb />
ECU nor SMU had a winning record. However,<lb />
Weeks did say that the broadcast at Rice on<lb />
Nov. 18 would preempt the Fighting Irish. He<lb />
said that interrupting the Notre Dame-UNC<lb />
broadcast could cause WITN a large fine for<lb />
diverting its national feed for a predetermined<lb />
number of hours.<lb />
He also considered carrying the game on<lb />
WITN's digital cable 7.2, but claimed he would<lb />
lose 80 percent of his audience. Why not carry<lb />
the game on digital cable live and still tape delay<lb />
the game on regular cable?<lb />
UCF controls the television rights and<lb />
despite WITN's requests, denied moving the 4<lb />
p.m. game time.<lb />
"We think this is a good game to be carried<lb />
and hope it doesn't inconvenience fans too much<lb />
Weeks understated.<lb />
WITN has already broadcast the game at<lb />
UAB and has plans to carry the Nov. 11 home<lb />
game against Marshall and at Rice on Nov. 18.<lb />
That is, unless, the Tar Heels are playing.<lb />
JUST ASK JANE<lb />
Need advice? Want answers? Just ask Jane.<lb />
Dear Jane,<lb />
I'm really concerned about one ofmy friends.<lb />
I think she has an eating disorder, but obviously,<lb />
that's not something I feel like I can just come out<lb />
and ask her about without possibly jeopardizing<lb />
our friendship. She's overly concerned with what<lb />
she eats and works out a crazy amount. More than<lb />
that, she's lost an astonishing amount of weight this<lb />
semester and I'm very concerned about her health.<lb />
Signed,<lb />
Astonished<lb />
Dear Astonished,<lb />
Eating disorders can be a tough topic to<lb />
tackle, so I understand why you seem hesitant<lb />
to approach your friend. However, she is put-<lb />
ting herself in an unhealthy state and if no one<lb />
intervenes then she may not realize that it is<lb />
a problem. People who have eating disorders<lb />
have a distorted mental picture of how they<lb />
appear to themselves and others around them.<lb />
If you are truly worried about your friends<lb />
well being then you should express your con-<lb />
cerns to her. You will not jeopardize your<lb />
friendship so long as you seem genuine and<lb />
you do not come off as being judgmental.<lb />
It is normal for both men and women to be con-<lb />
cerned about what they eat but if your friend is not<lb />
eating at all or is only limiting herself to lettuce and<lb />
celery then she has a problem that must be addressed.<lb />
There is an eating disorder center through the<lb />
Brody School of Medicine at ECU that you can refer<lb />
your friend to, if she agrees to go for counseling.<lb />
In many cases, a person with an eating disorder<lb />
does not realize that they have a problem. She obvi-<lb />
ously has a negative body image that has sprouted<lb />
from something. Somewhere down the line, she<lb />
developed this phobia, which will take time to<lb />
reverse, but if you remain a positive influence and a<lb />
good friend then she will have the support she needs.<lb />
I know it is scary to tell a friend that you think they<lb />
have a problem, but if they are never made aware<lb />
of it then they will not know to fix it. Good luck!<lb />
Sincerely,<lb />

I love it when people chit chat very<lb />
loudly on the third floor in the library.<lb />
I mean, quiet study floor obviously<lb />
means people can talk however loud<lb />
they want. People are so smart.<lb />
Recreation and leisure is not easy!<lb />
I wish my roommate would stop<lb />
stealing my hat. Just because I let<lb />
you borrow it one time because you<lb />

Being bipolar makes functioning<lb />

sometimes, especially when no one<lb />

I come to the library to study but all<lb />
I do is waste my time because I get<lb />
nothing accomplished.<lb />
Your bluetooth does not make you<lb />
cool Why do you insist on wearing<lb />
it in class? You sit on the front row,<lb />
so it is doubtful that you are going to<lb />
talk on the phone.<lb />
Quit trying to play your little mind<lb />
games with me. I'm not one of your<lb />
easily influenced minions. You forgot<lb />
that I am, and will always be, older<lb />
and wiser than you. Try listening<lb />
instead of arguing.<lb />
I'm sure you look cool in your<lb />
sunglasses when you're outside, but<lb />
you just look weird when you wear<lb />
them in class.<lb />
I have not had more than three<lb />

If you think the music sucks so bad<lb />

join the committee and voice your<lb />
opinions. Maybe then we wont have<lb />

Just because I wear big sunglasses<lb />

the same thing every time before<lb />
finally giving up and dnving off. It was<lb />

The NAACP is as racially biased<lb />

RANT OF THE DAY<lb />
My feet dangle as I sit on the toilet.<lb />
Election issues in<lb />
the land of the free<lb />
Gay marriage an important issue for<lb />
many Americans<lb />
JESSE PENCE<lb />
OPINION WRITER ,<lb />
Elections after election, candidates seeking our<lb />
approval to represent our views and opinions, to become<lb />
our voices, discuss key issues important to the American<lb />
public. In life, we are all different; our country is a vast and<lb />
developed meltingpot ofculture, religion and beliefs cre-<lb />
ating one of the most unique topographical tapestries of<lb />
people - that should be cultivated rather than segregated.<lb />
As 1 get older and more mature, I start to wonder<lb />
what my future will be and who is going to create the<lb />
future I would like to see. With the coming elections,<lb />
my key issues would have to be new processes for the<lb />
cultivation of energy, environmental protection and<lb />
finally gay marriage.<lb />
To some the topic of gay marriage seems over<lb />
dramatized, unimportant or the next step in an equal<lb />
society. Marriage has so many diverse definitions. For<lb />
some cultures it is a business arrangement, a sign of<lb />
unconditional loyalty or a tax break, among countless<lb />
other manifestations.<lb />
One definition of marriage, by Dictionary.com is "a<lb />
blending or matching of different elements or compo-<lb />
nents One ofmy best friends is an out homosexual. He<lb />
has those same dreams that many of us in college seek.<lb />
To earn a degree and maybe, just maybe, meet that some-<lb />
one that he is supposed to be with the rest of his life.<lb />
It is that "American Dream" to be evolved enough to<lb />
give yourself entirely to another behind a white picket<lb />
fence played countless times in American Cinema.<lb />
Our President refers to marriage as "a sanctity and<lb />
religious institution Now, as I recall from Law and Poli-<lb />
tics classes and U.S. History classes from high school, the<lb />
government is to be far removed from any one particular<lb />
religion as our country is diversified. To sponsor one<lb />
religion would be to negate one reason for our formation,<lb />
freedom of religion. By the standards of which I was<lb />
taught on the separation of Church and State, it would be<lb />
apparent that all marriages officiated by a Justice of the<lb />
Peace or other governmental council should be null and<lb />
void - it is a religious celebration and therefore should<lb />
be kept apart from our governing body.<lb />
Marriages should offer no legal contract, as all religions<lb />
and denominations of religions have different interpreta-<lb />
tions within their mythologies. The government should<lb />
offer all people seeking partnered benefits a civil union,<lb />
the joining of two parties and the collaboration of finances.<lb />
Our government has rules, laws and regulations<lb />
about protecting its citizens from others and themselves.<lb />
Any part of a religious belief that threatens the safety of<lb />
her citizens is not applicable to our freedom. For instance,<lb />
within the Holy Bible stoning was used as punishment. If<lb />
this practice were to reoccur in our own time, our gov-<lb />
ernment would be required to intervene. Just because<lb />
you're religion believes something does not mean you<lb />
automatically have the freedom to do so. Our Bill of<lb />
Rights clearly defines that I am an individual able to<lb />
make my own decisions and not be forced like many of our<lb />
ancestors to practice one specific set of religious beliefs.<lb />
By this standard, your beliefs might say, "Well<lb />
no, a gay marriage is a sin as it says in the Bible You<lb />
are allowed to believe this and followers of your reli-<lb />
gion can respect this, however, your religion should<lb />
not supercede the decisions of our forefathers in<lb />
determining what America was built upon. America<lb />
is nothing more than a fantastic idea, a glorious<lb />
experiment constantly changing, where any person<lb />
with any belief and any idea would be respected,<lb />
where no one has any right to force beliefs beyond<lb />
inherent ethical and inherent moral codes upon you.<lb />
"Marriage" is just a word. The audience determines<lb />
the definition of marriage. Change the word to "civil<lb />
union "partnership" or "domestic beneficiaries" they<lb />
all mean the same thing, the implication is there. By our<lb />
President's former statement said a year or two ago, "pro-<lb />
tect the sanctity of marriage he did nothing more than<lb />
contradict previous court decisions separating religious<lb />
opinion from governmental process. If two people of the<lb />
same sex are not to be married by the court, then neither<lb />
should any couple of the opposite sex. So many people are<lb />
confusing personal belief with ethical behavior, blurring<lb />
boundaries that were set into effect many years ago. All<lb />
people of any diversity are equal as clearly defined by<lb />
our constitution. To define marriage through religion<lb />
should remove it from our legal system.<lb />
The other walls of hate<lb />
JUSTIN SUMMER<lb />
OPINION WRITER<lb />
Last week's "Wall of Hate" set up by the Ledonia Wright<lb />
Cultural Society was a success on campus and hopefully raised<lb />
some awareness to the problems created by racism. What may<lb />
be surprising to some of you is that the "Wall of Hate" set up<lb />
in the brickyard was not the only place on campus covered<lb />
with racial slurs and epithets on campus. In the library, for<lb />
instance, the stalls in the men's bathroom are covered in<lb />
obscenities, both racial and homophobic. People find the need<lb />
to scribble "KKK" and phony Web sites and phone numbers<lb />
to call "for a good time For years, I have seen this sort of<lb />
immature and liatefiil graffiti on display in public bathroom<lb />
stalLs, but it is a completely absurd for college students to be<lb />
doing it on campus.<lb />
I don't understand how itis acceptable for people to express<lb />
theiropinionson lathroom walls. Maybe people think it is cool<lb />
because otJier people have done it; kids did it in middle school<lb />
and no one cared. But, things should be different in college as<lb />
I m sure things are different at other colleges. Why is this sort<lb />
of behavior still tolerated at ECU?<lb />
These rarist, hateful andor offensive comments written<lb />
in bathnxims do not bother me that much because I am white<lb />
and don't spend too much time in the bathroom at Joyner. But I<lb />
would bet that the many black, gay or Jewish students would be,<lb />
not to mention tile people wlx) clean the badirooms of Joyner.<lb />
I think that this sort of thoughtless aixl immature behavior<lb />
should not be tolerated here at ECU. I'm not too sure of what<lb />
ran be done about the problem but we should at feast address it.<lb />
At the football game a few weeks ago, people were appar-<lb />
ently shouting obscenities in front of children and being drunk<lb />
and offensive After the game, we all received the e-mail that<lb />
was dioroughh effective at making us Pirates feel ashamed of<lb />
our behavior. If being drunk and loud in front of an opposing<lb />
fan Ls offensive and merits a campus-wide e-mail and guilt trip,<lb />
why is this BS in the BR tolerated?<lb />
Once again, I must stress the fact that we are college<lb />
students and should act like it. Writing on bathroom stalls<lb />
might be amusing in elementary school, but things should be<lb />
different in a college 'atmosphere.<lb /><pb facs="00059457_tn_0005" /><lb />

Over 154 campuses<lb />

ADELINE TRENTO<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Last Thursday, Oct. 26, ECU<lb />
hosted a letter writing event as<lb />
part of Up 'til Dawn, a fund-<lb />
raising campaign for St. Jude<lb />
Children's Research Hospital.<lb />
The nationwide fund-raiser,<lb />
which aims to unite students with<lb />
the community and raise money<lb />
for the children at St. Jude, takes<lb />
place on 154 campuses across<lb />
the U.S. and has raised more<lb />
than $10 million for St. Jude.<lb />
Students who participated in<lb />
)<lb />
family and neighbors in an attempt to<lb />
the fundraiser were organized into<lb />
groups of about six people, and<lb />
each group member was asked to<lb />
send 50 letters to friends, family<lb />
and neighbors in an attempt to<lb />
receive donations for St. Jude.<lb />
Students were asked to sign and<lb />
address pre-written letters to<lb />
people they knew in hopes that<lb />
their friends and family would<lb />
donate whatever they could to<lb />
the cause.<lb />
Most students volunteered<lb />
their time to help with this event<lb />
because fundraising is critical<lb />
to the success of St. Jude. The<lb />
research hospital relies on dona-<lb />
tions because they offer free treat-<lb />
ment to sick children all over the<lb />
world.<lb />
St. Jude is also the only pedi-<lb />
request donations for the hospital.<lb />
atric cancer research center where<lb />
families are never asked to pay for<lb />
treatments not covered by their<lb />
insurance, and families with-<lb />
out insurance are never asked<lb />
to pay, according to Stjude.org.<lb />
Many sororities, clubs, honor<lb />
students and faculty members, as<lb />
well as groups of students just<lb />
wanting to help, participated in<lb />
this event. Students who took part<lb />
in this fund-raiser did so because<lb />
they thought it was a great cause.<lb />

In a letter to city officials, Harris<lb />

CDC probing salmo-<lb />
nella outbreak in 18 states<lb />
(AP) A salmonella outbreak<lb />
potentially linked to produce has<lb />
sickened at least 12 people in 18<lb />
states, health officials said Monday.<lb />
Health officials think the bac-<lb />
teria may have spread through<lb />
some form of produce - the list of<lb />
suspects includes tomatoes. But<lb />
the illnesses have not been tied<lb />
to any specific product, chain,<lb />
restaurants or supermarkets.<lb />
No one has died in the outbreak,<lb />
which stems from a common<lb />
form of salmonella bacteria.<lb />
Eleven people have been hos-<lb />
pitalized, health officials said.<lb />
"We're very early in the inves-<lb />

The most serious outbreak, first<lb />
reported in September, involved<lb />
spinach tainted with E. coli bac-<lb />
teria that killed three people<lb />
and sickened more than 200.<lb />
Health officials estimate that more<lb />
than 1.4 million cases of salmonel-<lb />

About 1.3 million of those cases<lb />
come from food, Braden said.<lb />

television's Mickey Mouse Club in<lb />
1976, her newly published "Dirty<lb />
Blonde" diary says. The book<lb />
also exposes her painful relation-<lb />
ship with her mother, therapist<lb />
Linda Carroll, Newsweek reports.<lb />
"When I get around (Carroll), I<lb />
feel so awkward and timid and<lb />
weak trying to prove to her<lb />
that I can make friends and be<lb />
popular a 12-year-old Love writes.<lb />
Later letters come from<lb />
inside an Oregon prison.<lb />
Love's memoir hits the shelves<lb />
a week after her late husband,<lb />
singer-songwriter-guitarist Kurt<lb />
Cobain displaced Elvis at No. 1<lb />
on Forbess list of the top-earning<lb />
dead celebrities, Newsweek notes.<lb />
Part of that comes from Love, who<lb />
sold her 25 percent share in the<lb />
Seattle-based rock band Nirvana<lb />
catalog, and earned Cobain's estate<lb />
$50 million.<lb />

SERVICE<lb />
continued from Al<lb />
Students gather together to watch educational films that explore the history and culture of Latin America<lb />
Two films shown in<lb />
inaugural series<lb />
ZACK HILL<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
The first leg of the new His-<lb />
panic Film Series wrapped up<lb />
Thursday night in Bate 2011 with<lb />
a showing of lllummaiios por el<lb />
h'urifo(Enlightened by Fire), a film<lb />
about the conflict between Argen-<lb />
tina and Britain in the 1080a. It<lb />
was preceded in the series by a<lb />
September showing of Halsrros, a<lb />
documentary about Cuban rafters<lb />
coming to America.<lb />
The series is being put together<lb />
by Juan Damn and Jennifer Valko,<lb />
both professors in the depart-<lb />
ment of foreign languages and<lb />
literature's Spanish division.<lb />
They said that it is the first<lb />
Hispanic film scries that they have<lb />
heard of at ECU.<lb />
"We thought it was necessary<lb />
because of not only the changing<lb />
demographics in the state, but<lb />
also the fact that the university is<lb />
seeing more students with a His-<lb />
panic background said Daneri.<lb />
"It's a way to get people to<lb />
learn about other cultures not only<lb />
in terms of their differences, but<lb />
also the similarities and shared<lb />
experiences said Valko<lb />
Before each screening, a pro-<lb />
fessor or faculty member gives<lb />
tome background information and<lb />
puts the film in a context in which<lb />
the students can relate. Afterward,<lb />
discussion is encouraged, though<lb />
not required.<lb />
"We are careful to avoid turn-<lb />
ing this into a classroom situation<lb />
Daneri said.<lb />
So far, turnout has exceeded<lb />
their expectations, with the<lb />
upstairs classroom in the Bate<lb />
building strained to hold the 40<lb />
to 50 students who have shown<lb />
up each time. Students from Pitt<lb />
Community College as well as<lb />
members of the Greenville com-<lb />
munity have also attended the<lb />
films.<lb />
Valko and Daneri hope that the<lb />
i<lb />
films expand students' perspec-<lb />
tives on Hispanic culture.<lb />
A lot of people have a fairly<lb />
limited idea of what Hispanic cul-<lb />
ture is. They usually think about<lb />
it in terms of a single country.<lb />
Latin America is very diverse<lb />
and there are lot of things like<lb />
immigration, war and economic<lb />
and environmental issues that are<lb />
important both there and here<lb />
Daneri said.<lb />
The series will pick up again in<lb />
the spring semester, though dates<lb />
have not yet been set. Valko and<lb />
Daneri hope that the showings<lb />
will continue to be a success so<lb />
that funding may become available<lb />
to bring in a guest speaker, such as<lb />
a Hispanic filmmaker.<lb />
In the meantime, they are sat-<lb />
isfied with their progress so far.<lb />
"We want people to reflect<lb />
on what they've seen, and also<lb />
see some very good films Valko<lb />
said.<lb />
This writer can be contacted at<lb />

It is Denius's hope that the people<lb />
who volunteer will see what<lb />
they do as a positive experi-<lb />
ence and will come out in the<lb />
future for more volunteer projects.<lb />
As a side project to the differ-<lb />
ent volunteer events, the Volunteer<lb />
Center had 1.5 students participat-<lb />
ing as site leaders.<lb />
These students supervised<lb />
their peers and encouraged them<lb />
during the day.<lb />
Students who missed out on<lb />
Make a Difference Day and want<lb />
to volunteer in the future have an<lb />
opportunity in the spring. On the<lb />
Monday holiday for Martin Luther<lb />
Kings birthday, the volunteer<lb />
center is hoping to have a day of<lb />
service as well.<lb />

ERIC GILMORE<lb />
SPORTS EDITOR<lb />
The local NBC affiliate claims to be, "The<lb />

Turn to the tubes this weekend and "the offi-<lb />

during ECU's game at UCF.<lb />
Notre Dame and UNC kickoff at 2:30 p.m.<lb />
while ECU-UCF start at p.m. What if Travis<lb />

live, ECU fans will be watching Marvin Dough-<lb />

Some official station.<lb />
WITN has a contract with the Pirate Sports<lb />
Television Network to broadcast four games<lb />
each season. The agreement, which has been in<lb />
place since 1992, has aired nearly 100 games<lb />
throughout eastern North Carolina.<lb />
Billy Weaver, the WITN sports director,<lb />
serves as color analyst while weekend sports<lb />
anchor Brian Meador reports from the sideline.<lb />
When College Sports Television signed a con-<lb />
tractual agreement to control the majority of<lb />
television rights, WITN lost options.<lb />
CSTV, which is only available on digital<lb />
cable locally, has nationally broadcast the<lb />
Sept. 9 game at Navy, Oct. 7 contest against<lb />
Virginia and Oct. 28 game at Southern Miss.<lb />
"The UCF game was not on the original<lb />
schedule that we had set up with ECU said<lb />
WITN General Manager Mike Weeks in a radio<lb />
interview on Monday. "We'd like to have all away<lb />
games if we could because that would be of inter-<lb />

Weeks said WITN management never con-<lb />
sidered switching games midway through, saying<lb />
the option was "unacceptable WITN brass<lb />
interrupted the Southern Cal-Notre Dame last<lb />
season, a game with national interest last season<lb />
to start ECU's game at SMU. USC and Notre<lb />
Dame were ranked in the top-10 while neither<lb />
ECU nor SMU had a winning record. However,<lb />
Weeks did say that the broadcast at Rice on<lb />
Nov. 18 would preempt the Fighting Irish. He<lb />
said that interrupting the Notre Dame-UNC<lb />
broadcast could cause WITN a large fine for<lb />
diverting its national feed for a predetermined<lb />
number of hours.<lb />
He also considered carrying the game on<lb />
WITN's digital cable 7.2, but claimed he would<lb />
lose 80 percent of his audience. Why not carry<lb />
the game on digital cable live and still tape delay<lb />
the game on regular cable?<lb />
UCF controls the television rights and<lb />
despite WITN's requests, denied moving the 4<lb />
p.m. game time.<lb />
"We think this is a good game to be carried<lb />
and hope it doesn't inconvenience fans too much<lb />
Weeks understated.<lb />
WITN has already broadcast the game at<lb />
UAB and has plans to carry the Nov. 11 home<lb />
game against Marshall and at Rice on Nov. 18.<lb />
That is, unless, the Tar Heels are playing.<lb />
JUST ASK JANE<lb />
Need advice? Want answers? Just ask Jane.<lb />
Dear Jane,<lb />
I'm really concerned about one of my friends.<lb />
Jane<lb />

My feet dangle as I sit on the toilet.<lb />
Election issues in<lb />
the land of the free<lb />
Gay marriage an important issue for<lb />
many Americans<lb />
JESSE PENCE<lb />
OPINION WRITER<lb />
Elections after election, candidates seeking our<lb />
approval to represent our views and opinions, to become<lb />
our voices, discuss key issues important to the American<lb />
public. In life, we are all different; our country is a vast and<lb />
developed melting pot of culture, religion and beliefs cre-<lb />
ating one of the most unique topographical tapestries of<lb />
people - that should be cultivated rather than segregated.<lb />
One definition of marriage, by Dictionary.com is "a<lb />
blending or matching of different elements or compo-<lb />
nents One of my best friends is an out homosexual. He<lb />
has those same dreams that many of us in college seek.<lb />
What may<lb />
be surprising to some of you Ls that the "Wall of Hate" set up<lb />
in the brickyard was not the only place on campus covered<lb />
with racial slurs and epithets on campus. In the library, for<lb />
instance, tlie stalls in tlie men's bathroom are covered in<lb />
obscenities, both racial and Iximophobic. People find die need<lb />
to scribble "KKK" and phony Web sites and phone numbers<lb />
to call "for a good time For years, I have seen this sort of<lb />
immature and hateful graffiti on display in public bathroom<lb />
stalls, but it is a completely absurd for college students to be<lb />
doing it on campus.<lb />
i don't understaix) how it us acceptable for peopk-to express<lb />
their opinions on bathroom walls. Maybe people think it is cool<lb />
because otlier people have done it; kids did it in middle school<lb />
and no one cared. But, things should be different in college as<lb />
I'm sure things are different at other colleges. Why is this sort<lb />
ofbehavior still tolerated at ECU?<lb />
These racist, hateful andor offensive comments written<lb />
in bathrooms do not bother me that much because I am white<lb />
and don't spend ttm much time in die bath room at Joyner. But I<lb />
would bet that the many black, gay or Jewish students would be,<lb />
not to mention die people wlx clean the bathrooms of Joyner.<lb />
1 think that this sort of thoughdess and immature behavior<lb />
should not be tolerated here at ECU. I'm not too sure of what<lb />
can be done about the problem but we should at least address it.<lb />
At die football game a few weeks ago, people were appar-<lb />
ently shouting obscenities in front of children and being drunk<lb />
and offensive. After the game, we all received the e-mail that<lb />
was Uioroughly effective at making us Pirates feel ashamed of<lb />
our behavior. If being drunk ami loud in front of an opposing<lb />
fan is offensive and merits a campus-wide e-mail and guilt trip,<lb />
why is this BS in the BR tolerated?<lb />
Once again, I must stress the fact that we are college<lb />
students and should act like it. Writing on bathroom stalls<lb />
might be amusing in elementary schcxil, but things should be<lb />
different in a college atmosphere.<lb />

A guide to keep our campus looking<lb />
good this season<lb />
r<lb />
JENNY AYERS<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Now that we are coming upon the colder of<lb />
North Carolina's seasons, it's time to break<lb />
out the layers and bundle up. So I'm here<lb />
to tell you what to wear and what not to<lb />
wear. I'm no fashionista, but I've con-<lb />
sulted a few helpful Web sites that will<lb />
hopefully get the Pirates into tip-top<lb />
fashion shape.<lb />
The first site that I came upon in<lb />
the way of fall fashion assistance is per-<lb />
sonalshopper.com where you can search<lb />
among many labels from DKN Y to Dolce<lb />
& Gabbana Of course as college students<lb />
the price tags may seem a bit intimidating at<lb />
first but you can browse the discount section and get<lb />
designer clothes at a decent bar-<lb />
gain. Even if you don't plan on<lb />
buying the big names, you can<lb />
scan the shelves of the online<lb />
store and get some ideas for<lb />
your own look.<lb />
According to the<lb />
Internet and its infinite<lb />
wisdom, there are sev-<lb />
eral must-haves for the<lb />
ladies this season. First<lb />
of all, please keep<lb />
in mind that appar-<lb />
ently gold is back in.<lb />
Every designer is using it<lb />
and sometimes, over<lb />
using it. As for styles,<lb />
the tunic sweater is at the<lb />
top of the list and looks snazziest when paired with<lb />
slim pants or "skinny "jean. As you've probably seen<lb />
around campus, wide belts worn over the clothes<lb />
are definitely in right now and make a great<lb />
addition to the tunic sweater, accentuating the<lb />
waistline and hips.<lb />
Reverting back to the 1980s, pencil<lb />
pants (slim-fit, tailored trousers with<lb />
form fitting fabrics) are also hot this<lb />
season Think stirrup pants minus the<lb />
stirrups and slightly less unsightly.<lb />
The snug pants look great tucked<lb />
into boots and accompanied by a<lb />
tunic top.<lb />
If you're feeling a little sassier, day<lb />
dresses paired with pencil pants or<lb />
leggings are also hot right now. Or<lb />
there are the romantic tops with rich<lb />
flowy fabrics that haven't yet finished<lb />
their stint on the fashion scene. For<lb />
the fall season you can wear these alone<lb />
with an ever trendy fitted jacket or go<lb />
for the layered look.<lb />
As for shoes, one of the major perks<lb />
of cold weather is the excuse to wear tall<lb />
boots. You can make a statement and<lb />
wear high contoured boots with a skirt,<lb />
over jeans, or once again bring in the<lb />
pencil pants to create a very fashion<lb />
conscious ensemble.<lb />
sories. You can find<lb />
everything from<lb />
If the tall boots are little<lb />
too extreme for you, ankle<lb />
boots are also a popular and<lb />
hot addition to any outfit.<lb />
Jeans, skinny pants, leg-<lb />
gings, skirts, they look good<lb />
with whatever and anyone can<lb />
pull them off But why would<lb />
you want to when they look so<lb />
good on?!<lb />
The ballet flat is still reign-<lb />
ing as one of the favorite footwear acces-<lb />
all types of styles with<lb />
bows to lace adorning<lb />
pers. And of course<lb />
they can work with<lb />
any outfit, beefing<lb />
up the simplest styles.<lb />
At fashion.about,<lb />
com they answer the<lb />
question that's been<lb />
plaguing me for years,<lb />
how does one layer? Not<lb />
everyone can pull of the layered look like the<lb />
models, but have no fear, there are a few helpful<lb />
hints at how to look good and still stay warm.<lb />
Layer lightweight skirts and dresses over<lb />
jeans. This look works best over skinny jeans<lb />
and with skirts that aren't too full or long.<lb />
Layer funky T-shirts over long-sleeve white (or<lb />
other solid) T-shirts. Get a fitted jacket in denim,<lb />
corduroy or velvet that looks good with<lb />
any ensemble. Layer the bottom half of your<lb />
body with tights worn under knee-high<lb />
boots. For a polished, professional look you<lb />
can layer a matching shell and cardigan.<lb />
For a more stylish look, mix fabrics by<lb />
putting a sequined shrug over a T-shirt<lb />
or a denim jacket over black jersey.<lb />
For the latest info on the hottest<lb />
deals and styles, check out thebud-<lb />
getfashionista.com where they have<lb />
online coupons, sales alerts and<lb />
advice on how to get styling. To<lb />
increase your fashion quo-<lb />
tient and shop for<lb />
designer duds,<lb />
there's fashioniq.<lb />
com where you<lb />
can find tons of<lb />
name brands<lb />
and even catch<lb />
some bargains.<lb />
All the<lb />
fashion pages<lb />
agree that you<lb />
can achieve<lb />
the fashion-<lb />
able look with-<lb />
out having to<lb />
break the bank.<lb />
Most department<lb />
stores and even<lb />
bargain retailers<lb />
(i.e. Target) are fea- turing the! a t e s t<lb />
styles at an affordable price. This fall<lb />
winter no one should have an excuse not to<lb />
be up to par with the fashion standards of<lb />
the season. Even if you'd ratlier just wear a<lb />
sweatshirt to class, you could always spiff it<lb />
up with some ballet<lb />
cold weather scene,<lb />
fun with fashion.<lb />
fiats or those pencil pants that are evidently all over the<lb />

Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio has some of the best roller coasters in the US<lb />
How to salvage your<lb />
trip even if you can't<lb />
salvage your car<lb />
JENNY AYERS<lb />
STAFF WRITKR<lb />
Our little adventure begins<lb />
when three North Carolinians<lb />
and a I'ittsburgher decide to take<lb />
a weekend road trip to Sandusky,<lb />
Ohio to visit the world's best<lb />
amusement park. Cedar Point.<lb />
On Friday, Oct. 20, three friends<lb />
and I piled into my 1994 Nissan<lb />
Sentra for a weekend excursion<lb />
that would turn into a test of sur-<lb />
vival skills<lb />
After Alex's (the I'ittsburgher)<lb />
introduction to the fabulousness<lb />
that is Bojangles, we were on<lb />
our way north. About the time<lb />
we reach West Virginia, I real-<lb />
ize all eight of our entry tickets<lb />
into the park are still sitting in<lb />
Greenville. We're talking $300<lb />
worth of paper here After a mini<lb />
breakdown, I call my roommate<lb />
who saves the day by over-night-<lb />
ing the tickets to our hotel. One<lb />
crisis down, many more to go.<lb />
Thanks to my NASCAR-like<lb />
driving skills and minimal stop-<lb />
ping, we are making excellent<lb />
time. After being on the road tor<lb />
just seven hours, we're merely 100<lb />
miles from our Lake Erie destina-<lb />
tion. My enthusiasm wanes when I<lb />
start to hear an unfamiliar sound<lb />
coming from beneath the hood.<lb />
As I pull on to the shoulder, my<lb />
car shuts ofTand emotional break-<lb />
down number two accompanies<lb />
the automotive breakdown.<lb />
After some rest for the car and<lb />
encouragement from my crew,<lb />
I decide to start her up and get<lb />
off on the next exit and hope to<lb />
goodness it's just a spark plug.<lb />
So we roll into New Philadelphia,<lb />
Ohio (yeah, I have never heard of<lb />
it either) where luckily there's a<lb />
garage nearby.<lb />
Well of course it isn't just a<lb />
spark plug, that'd be way too easy.<lb />
The fact is I need a new engine.<lb />
That's exactly what you want to<lb />
hear when you're 400 miles from<lb />
home. Commence breakdown<lb />
number three.<lb />
After plotting, thinking and<lb />
calculating, we come up with the<lb />
obvious solution: We'll rent a<lb />
U-Haul! We be-bop over to the<lb />
rental place and of course they're<lb />
fresh out. They do, however,<lb />
have a 1985 Monte Carlo sitting<lb />
out front but they say $200 just<lb />
won't cut it.<lb />
So we cruise (I use the term<lb />
loosely as my car was ready to<lb />
give way any second) on over to a<lb />
nearby car rental place and hope<lb />
they'll be able to rent something<lb />
to three broke college kids. Unfor-<lb />
tunately, if you're out of state, you<lb />
have to have a credit card and<lb />
the only one of us with one is my<lb />
friend Alex, a 19-year-old with an<lb />
expired Australian driver's license.<lb />
So that's a no-go and here comes<lb />
breakdown number four.<lb />
Finally, they take pity on us<lb />
and (illegally) give us a car. Two<lb />
hundred dollars later, we are on<lb />
our way again in a 2000 Grand<lb />
Am. Quite the upgrade. There's<lb />
just one catch, we have to return<lb />
the car to the same rental place<lb />
by Monday, which means we need<lb />
another way home. Oh well, we'll<lb />
cross that bridge when we get<lb />
there. Except with our luck, the<lb />
bridge will crumble into pieces<lb />
just as we're about to cross.<lb />
We spend three relatively<lb />
stress-free days at "America's<lb />
Roller Coast Cedar Point. With<lb />
over 68 rides and attractions,<lb />
including 16 (soon to be 17) roller<lb />
coasters, it certainly made up for<lb />
all the breakdowns.<lb />
Then comes Monday - the<lb />
second longest day of my life<lb />
(the first being two weeks prior<lb />
when I managed to dislocate<lb />
my shoulder on 1-40 coming<lb />
back from Greensboro). With<lb />
bus tickets in hand, we trek<lb />

Board games have been<lb />

have evolved into what we now<lb />
consider the classics. Milton<lb />

and Playskool are among the<lb />
most recognized game creators,<lb />

Many adults think that board<lb />
games are just for kids. This fal-<lb />

specifically designed to entertain<lb />

Now I have to warn you that<lb />
the food prices at the City Bistro<lb />
cfcfilSTE <lb />
Conferences Wefdtngs<lb />
were a hit high, hut it was worth<lb />
it to dine in such a warm and<lb />
inviting atmosphere for a change.<lb />
I also have to admit that the food<lb />
was a bit overpriced considering<lb />
the quality; it lacked the flavors<lb />
that were expected after read-<lb />
ing the description on the menu.<lb />
My favorite part of the eve-<lb />
ning was listening to the jazz<lb />
music that was being played live<lb />
on the stage in front of us. The<lb />
music was refreshing compared<lb />
to the amount of junk that is<lb />
played on the radio these days<lb />
and I dare say it was the best live<lb />
performance I've seen in months.<lb />
They offer a full service bar<lb />
with nightly drink specials to<lb />
cater to those who just want to<lb />

ROADTRIP<lb />
continued from A4<lb />
through the newly arrived<lb />
snow to return our rental car.<lb />
After junking my car and<lb />
calling a taxi, we make it to the<lb />
bus stop just as the bus is ready<lb />
to pull out. There begins our<lb />
iO-hour journey hack to North<lb />
Carolina. Sure we could have<lb />
flown, but we don't have that<lb />
kind of money and we would<lb />
have missed out on our highway<lb />
tour of the northeastern United<lb />
States.<lb />
At our first stop, we befriend<lb />
some Amish folks who are cer-<lb />
tain North Carolina has to<lb />
be in Canada. Based on this<lb />
logic, they can't understand<lb />
how we are "Southerners" so<lb />
they determine we are from<lb />
Texas. We just go with it.<lb />
Then comes Pittsburgh where<lb />
a passenger manages to dump a<lb />
40 ounces beer on the floor and<lb />
all over my friend's belongings.<lb />
In her frenzy, she unknowingly<lb />
drops her cell phone, which is<lb />
of course picked up by a fellow-<lb />
passenger and never returned.<lb />
Breakdown number five.<lb />
Kn route to Baltimore, we<lb />
are awoken by what smells like<lb />
burning plastic. After many<lb />
complaints and coughs, the driver<lb />
turns on the lights to reveal a bus<lb />
full of smoke. We pull off for a<lb />
little while to air it out and then<lb />
collectively decide to turn off the<lb />
heat. I'd rather have a heatless<lb />
bus in 30 degree Pennsylvania<lb />
weather than lungs full of smoke.<lb />
But one passenger decides she<lb />
wants off because the thing is<lb />
sure to blow But I say I'd rather<lb />
keep on trucking than make this<lb />
a two-day bus ride. What's that,<lb />
breakdown number six?<lb />
The rest of the trip through<lb />
Baltimore, D.C. and Richmond<lb />
is relatively uneventful minus an<lb />
unexpected three-hour layover in<lb />
Virginia. The important thing is<lb />
that we finally made it back, how-<lb />
ever in debt and car-less I may he.<lb />
What I learned from all<lb />
this is that no matter what kind<lb />
of road trip you're taking, you<lb />
have to be mentally and finan-<lb />
cially prepared for anything. You<lb />
never know where you'll be<lb />
when your car starts to act up<lb />
or when you'll have a break-<lb />
down, but as long as there are<lb />
friends, patience and maybe a<lb />
few Amish people in the mix,<lb />
any trip can be a successful one.<lb />

Plans to upgrade<lb />
athletic facilities in<lb />
place<lb />
RON CLEMENTS<lb />
SENIOR WRITER<lb />
ECU's athletic facilities could<lb />
have a different look to them iffuture<lb />
renovations go through as planned.<lb />
The school will hire one of<lb />
three competing design firms as<lb />
early as this week as the initial<lb />
stage in a plan to make upgrades<lb />
to Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium, as<lb />
well as the Softball field and Bag-<lb />
well Field.<lb />
"The design firm will develop<lb />
feasibility studies for improve-<lb />
ments to all athletic facilities<lb />
including expansion of Dowdy-<lb />
Ficklen, luxury suites, new office<lb />
space for coaches, locker rooms for<lb />
teams and end zone seating Ath-<lb />
letics Director Terry Holland said.<lb />
According to ECU's Assistant<lb />
Athletics Director of Internal<lb />
Affairs, Gary Overton, the plans<lb />
include adding luxury boxes to<lb />
the press box side of the stadium,<lb />
moving the athletics offices to new<lb />
facilities on that same side and<lb />
placing permanent bleachers on a<lb />
temporary basis at the open south<lb />
scoreboard end of the field.<lb />
"Our dream is to bowl in the<lb />
scoreboard end of the stadium and<lb />
create as many lower level seats as<lb />
possible Holland said in an Oct.<lb />
4 radio interview. "End zone is<lb />
great seating for former players,<lb />
people who really care about the<lb />
game, who like to watch the block-<lb />
ing schemes, particularly ifyou have<lb />
access to the video replays and the<lb />
video screens so that you can spot<lb />
the ball. It's hard to tell where the<lb />
spot's gonna be in terms of the<lb />
chains, but other than that, that is by<lb />
far the best spot to watch the game<lb />
The improving football pro-<lb />
gram and expected home sellouts<lb />
in 2007 against North Carolina<lb />
and N.C. State with the expanded<lb />
seating will be used as criteria to<lb />
validate eventually closing in the<lb />
scoreboard end of the stadium.<lb />
"We'd like to create as many<lb />
seats as we possibly can in that end<lb />
zone Holland said. "We intend to<lb />
try to get that done, at least on a<lb />
temporary basis, by next season.<lb />
Then, put in as many seats as we<lb />
can. With temporary seats, you<lb />
can probably put about 50 to 60<lb />
percent of the number you'd like<lb />
to eventually have there<lb />
The foreseen changes for the soft-<lb />
ball and soccer facilities are adding<lb />
possible lights and expanded seating.<lb />
"We are in great need for<lb />
locker room space, particularly for<lb />
our women's sports Holland said.<lb />
"We are in great need for office<lb />
space and what I think what will<lb />
eventually happen, and we need a<lb />
professional to tell us how it can be<lb />
done and how much it's gonna cost,<lb />
we'll figure out what ECU needs<lb />
for the next 10 or 15 years as best<lb />
we can tell at this stage, and then<lb />
start building those facilities<lb />
Holland added that he envi-<lb />
sions a new press box, a "consider-<lb />
able building under the stands" on<lb />
the press box side to house locker<lb />
rooms, athletic offices and luxury<lb />
box suites at the top level.<lb />
The plans are still in the pre-<lb />
design stage, and no timeline has<lb />
been set for completion.<lb />

Conferebc Things didn't look<lb />
so bright for ECU after the<lb />
first period.<lb />
ECU went into the first inter-<lb />

mond Tyler Falcon, a sophomore<lb />
forward scored the first goal<lb />
for ECU in the second period<lb />
on a power play a little over 14<lb />
minutes into the period. Nathan<lb />
Buhr, a junior forward scored next,<lb />
less than two minutes later on<lb />
even strength. ECU went into the<lb />
second intermission down a goal.<lb />
Shortly into the third period,<lb />
Falcon added another goal barely<lb />
five minutes into the period. The<lb />
game winner came from Buhr with<lb />
only 1:10 left in the third period.<lb />
After getting down three goals,<lb />
ECU scored four unanswered,<lb />
winning -3.<lb />
'file game was revenge for the<lb />
Pirates from last year's BRHC finals<lb />
when ECU lost 6-4 to the Spiders.<lb />
On Saturday, ECU took on<lb />
Loyola in a non-conference game.<lb />
Once again ECU fell behind early<lb />
and after the first period was<lb />
down 2-0. Less than five minutes<lb />
into the second period, Loyola had<lb />
distanced its lead to 4-0.<lb />
The first goal for ECU came<lb />
from senior defenseman Jordan<lb />
Meyers with 9:07 left in the second<lb />
period. ECU would pull within<lb />
two after a goal from Zach John-<lb />
ston with 3:25 remaining in the<lb />
second period. The crowd finally<lb />
got back into the game after being<lb />
shocked by a 4-0 start by Loyola<lb />
ECU (4-1, 4-0 BRHC) would<lb />
draw even closer with another<lb />
goal by Johnston, a freshman<lb />
forward with 13:58 to go in the<lb />
third period. Loyola would answer<lb />
with 7:35 left with another goal to<lb />
increases its lead to 5-3. Less than<lb />
two minutes later, Corey Fleitz,<lb />
a junior forward and co-founder<lb />
scored to bring ECU within a goa<lb />
After many opportunities in the<lb />
waning minutes, ECU could not<lb />
score giving Loyola the 5-4 win.<lb />
After the game, ECU Head<lb />
Coach Wayne Cox was upset about<lb />
the loss, but also optimistic that it<lb />
would only make the team better.<lb />
"I think we were moderately<lb />
successful said Cox. "I think we<lb />
had a great win last night against<lb />
Richmond, but I think that look-<lb />

didn't beat us, we beat ourselves.<lb />
We clearly beat ourselves. It prob-<lb />

will take a message back from this;<lb />
that even though you have better<lb />
skills than the other team, you can<lb />
still lose the hockey game because<lb />
