To wrap up Hate Out Week events last week, the wall containing racial slurs and words of hate was demolished. Johnson lectures students on how hate permeates into all levels of society.<lb />
Wall comes down as<lb />
Hate Out Week ends<lb />
Students inspired<lb />
despite bad weather<lb />
BENJAMIN CORMACK<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Last week, students were able<lb />
to view the Wall of Hate erected<lb />
at the beginning of Hate Out<lb />
Week until it was brought down<lb />
on Friday, Oct. 27.<lb />
Following a speech by SGA<lb />
President M. Cole Jones, a video<lb />
presentation and singing by the<lb />
ECU Gospel Choir, the wall was<lb />
dismantled by John Botan and Taft<lb />
Taylor, of O'Neil Construction in<lb />
Tarboro. Many of the attending<lb />
students felt left out by not being<lb />
able to have a chance to bring down<lb />
the wall themselves, but couldn't<lb />
due to safety issues with the school.<lb />
While bad weather may have<lb />
affected the attendance at the cer-<lb />
emony of the wall coming down,<lb />
those involved hope that events held<lb />
throughout the week have inspired<lb />
students to, as guest speaker Jeff<lb />
Johnson said on Wednesday of<lb />
last week, "embrace love" and<lb />
look at hate with new awareness.<lb />
Gregory Hedgepeth, an Eco-<lb />
nomics Major, is Lead Chair<lb />
of The Ledonia Wright Cul-<lb />
tral Center Emissaries and Lead<lb />
Chair of the Social Outreach<lb />
Program and was involved<lb />
in Hate Out Week's events.<lb />
"I want people to say I was<lb />
educated during Hate Out Week,<lb />
especially when they look at that<lb />
wall said Hedgepeth said. "A lot<lb />
of people went around that wall<lb />
and saw various words that they<lb />
had no idea what they meant, had<lb />
never even seen them before, prob-<lb />
ably couldn't spell them if they<lb />
tried right now, but when people<lb />
were there educating them on<lb />
what it means and how they feel<lb />
when it's being said to them, then<lb />
that's the piece where they need<lb />
to go back and say if they have a<lb />
friend who uses this word or seen<lb />
this word in some way, they can<lb />
say, 'During Hate Out Week I<lb />
was educated on what that word<lb />
really means<lb />
Carol Woodruff, Director of Co-<lb />
Curricular Programming in Cul-<lb />
tural Outreach, was also on hand to<lb />
witness the wall being torn down.<lb />
"I hope that the symbolism<lb />
wasn't lost with people she said.<lb />
"Yes we can and do erect walls of<lb />
hate, but it is within our power to tear<lb />
them down and make a difference<lb />
Hedgepeth and Maurice Grif-<lb />
fin, communications major, were,<lb />
able to grab at least one piece of<lb />
the Wall of Hate before it was<lb />
taken away to be disposed of. Their<lb />
motivations were about preserving<lb />
that piece of the wall for posterity<lb />
and as example for next year and<lb />
possibly years to come. There is<lb />
also hope that the piece or pieces<lb />
of the wall that have been sal-<lb />
vaged will find their way to the<lb />
new cultural center being built on<lb />
campus.<lb />
"This is a part of the cultural<lb />
center's history here at ECU said<lb />
Griffin. "I think other students<lb />
who come from the past need to see<lb />
how this has evolved from where<lb />
we started and where it possibly<lb />
will be in the future<lb />
While the Wall of Hate was a<lb />
signature event of the week, Hate<lb />
Out Week was also marked by<lb />
several other events.<lb />
President of Student Govern-<lb />
ment Association M. Cole Jones<lb />
spoke about Hate Out Week as a<lb />
whole in his speech at the ceremony<lb />
for tearing down the Wall of Hate.<lb />
"We've done a lot this week<lb />
to just put things out there; to<lb />
express ourselves outwardly.<lb />
The wall symbolizes so much<lb />
said Jones. "Hate Out Week pro-<lb />
vided us an opportunity to just<lb />
be real with some things and for<lb />
us really to just recognize and<lb />
say some things in open forums<lb />
to where if the title wasn't Hate<lb />
Out Week we would probably be<lb />
jffraid to say.<lb />
Jones also said, "There's so<lb />
many different things that got<lb />
. Accomplished this week which<lb />
Brings us to embracing change,<lb />
which is not always the easiest<lb />
thing to do, but its great to do<lb />
and its great that we had this<lb />
week so we had the opportunity<lb />
to say, '1 am who I am. This is me<lb />
as a person. Respect me. Love me.<lb />
Embrace me. Praise me. Uplift<lb />
me If we don't understand or if<lb />
we don't communicate why we<lb />
are who we are; if we don't try to<lb />
understand one another, then we<lb />
are doing ourselves a disservice<lb />

Jeff Johnson delivers<lb />
powerful message<lb />
during Hate Out Week<lb />
BENJAMIN CORMACK<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Social activist, public min-<lb />
ister, leadership trainer and<lb />
BET entertainer, Jeff Johnson<lb />
spoke to students about how<lb />
the effects of hate can spread<lb />
through all groups of people.<lb />
Johnson spoke in Hendrix<lb />
Theatre on Wednesday, Octo-<lb />
ber 25, as part of the Hate Out<lb />
Week program. While glad to<lb />
be a part of the event, Johnson's<lb />
message was about trying to<lb />
create communities where the<lb />
need for events like Hate Out<lb />
Week are replaced by actual<lb />
discussions of cultural diversity.<lb />
"I think that if we're saying<lb />
hate out' is the goal, that we<lb />
want to get hate out, then that's<lb />
ultimately saying that we want<lb />
to put love in said Johnson.<lb />
"And there are certain things<lb />
that have to be done in order for<lb />
us to remove hate and embrace<lb />
love. The campus has to decide<lb />
what that is and how that's going<lb />
to happen, but you can't say<lb />
you want to end hate if you're<lb />
not willing to embrace love<lb />
The issues Johnson stressed<lb />
in his presentation in regards<lb />
to improving communication<lb />
and relations was'about having<lb />
honest conversations, challenging<lb />
ourselves and our own prejudices,<lb />
stepping out of our own comfort<lb />
zone and being ambassadors for<lb />
who and what we represent. In<lb />
the course of his presentation,<lb />
Johnson stressed people to ask<lb />
themselves important questions:<lb />
Where do we live? Do we have<lb />
honest conversation? What does<lb />
history really tell us? What am<lb />
I here to do? What am I here to<lb />
contribute to? Are you willing to<lb />
be soldiers of love who, as Johnson<lb />
put it, "fight for the love that exists<lb />
between the human family?"<lb />
The response of students<lb />
to Johnson's presentation and<lb />
overall attitude was one of great<lb />
admiration to say the least.<lb />
"I think that his message was<lb />
very informative said Virginnia<lb />
Street, a freshman nursing major.<lb />
"Because a lot of people need to<lb />
know how they can take them-<lb />
selves and put it to communities,<lb />
not just as a person, but culturally<lb />

192 companies and more than<lb />
400 representatives at the fairs<lb />
combined. She hoped that the<lb />
seminars, workshops and class-<lb />

"We want all of our students to<lb />
get good jobs said Martin. "Our<lb />
mission is to teach students how<lb />

"I go to about ten of these a<lb />

Event promotes<lb />
literacy, one child at a<lb />
time<lb />
ADELINE TRENTO<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
In an effort to promote literacy in<lb />
Greenville, Professor Lynn Which-<lb />
ard and her English 1200 class hosted<lb />
ECU's first Read-O-Ween, a Hallow-<lb />
een themed event for local children.<lb />
Read-O-Ween, which<lb />
involved IOO children from local<lb />
after school programs and many<lb />
ECU students, was held Monday,<lb />
Oct. 30 in the Willis Building.<lb />
The volunteers at Read-O-Ween<lb />
felt that this was a very important<lb />
event because many adults in the<lb />
area have reading problems and<lb />
are unable to promote literacy to<lb />
their children.<lb />
"The literacy council actually<lb />
says that one in four Pitt County<lb />
adults are either illiterate or have<lb />
strong reading problems said<lb />
Jessica Gagne, Student Engage-<lb />
ment Specialist. "Because they<lb />
cannot read themselves, they will<lb />
not be able to read to their children<lb />
or promote literacy in the home.<lb />
Being able to host an event like this<lb />
where we bring in children from<lb />
after school programs that may<lb />
be at risk is a great opportunity<lb />
The event invited Greenville<lb />
children to take part in many Hal-<lb />
loween activities that were fun but<lb />
also educational. Booths were set<lb />
up throughout the building with<lb />
exciting hands on activities that cor-<lb />
responded with a Halloween story.<lb />
The children at the event<lb />
were able to listen to Halloween<lb />
stories while coloring in their<lb />
favorite characters, write Hal-<lb />
loween poetry and eat fun Hal-<lb />
loween themed snacks. They were<lb />
also able to encounter and learn<lb />
about outer space in a mobile<lb />
planetarium that was put on by<lb />
the Volunteer and Service-Learn-<lb />
ing Center, n<lb />
Many students believe that<lb />
Read-O-Ween will show children<lb />
how fun and entertaining reading<lb />
can be and encourage them to go to<lb />
the library or bookstore and read.<lb />
"We hope to just bring excite-<lb />
ment to the idea of literacy said<lb />
Gagne. "There are just so many<lb />
kids that aren't interested in reading.<lb />
Events like this, where reading is<lb />
associated with things like animals<lb />
and a haunted house, will help kids<lb />
link fun activities with a story<lb />
Along with promoting literacy,<lb />
the event also gave the children a<lb />
chance to be with ECU students<lb />
and hopefully learn something from<lb />
them. Groups of volunteers took<lb />
the children around to the different<lb />
booths, while helping and interact-<lb />
ing with them.<lb />
Erica Miller, a junior and service<lb />
advocate, believes that although this<lb />
event is beneficial to young children,<lb />
it is also beneficial to the ECU stu-<lb />
dents involved.<lb />
"As a student 1 think this event<lb />
is really beneficial said Miller.<lb />
"It helps give real life experience<lb />
to those students that helped plan<lb />
Read-O-Ween and it definitely<lb />
makes an impact<lb />
More literacy events are planned<lb />
for the spring, and volunteers hope<lb />
that another Read-O-Ween will take<lb />
place next fall.<lb />

Sheriffs reach agreement with<lb />
groups challenging sex offender<lb />
law<lb />
(AP) Sheriffs in several<lb />
Georgia counties have temporar-<lb />
ily agreed not to enforce Geor-<lb />
gia's sex offender law against<lb />
nine anonymous elderly and<lb />
disabled men who faced eviction<lb />
from their nursing homes, trail-<lb />
ers or relatives' houses under<lb />
the law.<lb />
The announcement of the<lb />
consent agreements comes<lb />
less than three weeks after the<lb />
Atlanta-based Southern Center<lb />
for Human Rights asked a federal<lb />
judge to block the law's enforce-<lb />
ment for the nine men, including<lb />
one who has been told he has six<lb />
months to live and another with<lb />
Alzheimer's Disease. The law,<lb />
which took effect July 1, targets<lb />
offenders who live within 1,000<lb />
feet of a church.<lb />
Although Cooper's order only<lb />
affects the bus stop provision,<lb />
county officials have been reluc-<lb />
tant to enforce other provisions<lb />
of the law prohibiting offenders<lb />
from living, working or loitering<lb />
within 1,000 feet of just about<lb />
anywhere children gather; schools,<lb />
churches, parks, gyms and swim-<lb />
ming pools.<lb />
Historian seeks protection for<lb />
first lost Union fort<lb />
(AP) A small, overgrown<lb />
brick fort in Charleston Harbor<lb />
that is sometimes confused with<lb />
Fort Sumter also played a role in<lb />
the opening of the Civil War and<lb />
should be preserved, according to<lb />
a historian studying the site.<lb />
Castle Pinckney, finished in<lb />
1809, is located on an island across<lb />
the channel from Fort Sumter,<lb />
where the opening shots of the Civil<lb />
War were fired in April 1861.<lb />
Before the bombardment,<lb />
Pinckney was seized by 150 Con-<lb />
federate forces without a fight,<lb />
making it, not Sumter, the first<lb />
Union fortification lost in the<lb />
war, said Christopher Ziegler, a<lb />
historian with the National Park<lb />
Service.<lb />
But the National Park Service<lb />
never rehabilitated it, using it<lb />
mostly for storage before giving<lb />
it to the state.<lb />
Castle Pinckney is listed on<lb />
the National Register of Historic<lb />
Places.<lb />
"Let's at least go out there and<lb />
make sure nothing bad is happen-<lb />

Catapult-pumpkin accident<lb />

(AP) An accident that<lb />

being used to hurl pumpkins on a<lb />
Hillsboro farm, has left two people<lb />
in serious condition.<lb />
One, nine-year-old Jacob<lb />

He and 58-year-old Mike Detjan<lb />
were taken by ambulance to an area<lb />
hospital after Sunday's incident.<lb />
Jacob's father, Matt Roloff, said<lb />
they were using the device when<lb />
the trigger, which releases a 3,000<lb />
pound counterweight, released at<lb />
the wrong moment.<lb />
The Roloff family, which is<lb />
made up of little and average-sized<lb />
people, has gained attention as<lb />
the stars of a television series that<lb />
documents their lives.<lb />

(AP) Police in Davenport,<lb />

31-year-old Marcy Gant, accusing<lb />
her of trying to sell her four-year-<lb />
old son.<lb />
She's accused of buying a wed-<lb />

attended Johnson's presentation.<lb />
T think he was very real said<lb />
Bell. "He took an approach that<lb />
not a lot of people, such as black<lb />
people our selves, are willing to<lb />
take. You know, saying things and<lb />
criticizing black people, as well<lb />
as other races at the same time.<lb />
That's how you have to be<lb />
"He wasn't scared to say<lb />
anything said Stovall. "That's<lb />
what we need, we need somebody<lb />
who's not going to sugar coat<lb />
things and who's actually going<lb />
to talk about real issues. People<lb />
need to come because we're in<lb />
college to get educated, and<lb />
we need to get educated about<lb />
other people's cultures as well<lb />
as our own. We need to have<lb />
open minds and I think he did a<lb />
great job and I'm glad I came<lb />
Those involved in arranging<lb />
the event were very eager to get<lb />
him to come back, and felt his<lb />
presence was a great addition<lb />
as well as a tremendous help.<lb />
"Overall I'm excited about<lb />
the program said Laquesha<lb />
Foster, associate director of the<lb />
Ledonia Wright Culture Center.<lb />
T feel like he Johnsonj was<lb />
able to tie everything together<lb />
for students and really get what<lb />
Hate Out Week was about<lb />
"I hope that students will truly<lb />
understand the purpose of this<lb />
week, and they will'leave from his<lb />
presentation ready to make real<lb />
changes to make KCU better<lb />
SGA President M. Cole Jones<lb />
was also in attendance, and felt<lb />
that Johnson brought a great<lb />
impact to current school issues.<lb />
"I thought he delivered a mes-<lb />
sage we need to hear Jones said.<lb />
"Now we as a student body have<lb />
to make a decision; are we going<lb />
to follow-up with actions or are<lb />
we going to get another speaker<lb />
next semester or next year?"<lb />
Jones also said, "He reiter-<lb />
ated a lot of things that are sort<lb />
of inherent, but sometimes it<lb />
takes someone who has done<lb />
great things, some type of public<lb />
figure, to deliver a message that<lb />
our students can actually relate<lb />
to or believe. I thought his mes-<lb />
sage was well-worth hearing,<lb />
and the important thing now is<lb />
that we must stop, look, listen<lb />
and follow through with action<lb />
"We are at a very unique stage<lb />
on our campus. We have a strong<lb />
representation of diversity on the<lb />
student side as well as the adminis-<lb />
tration and faculty side. My recom-<lb />
mendation is that we really take this<lb />
momentum and strategically begin<lb />
planning out what are our goals<lb />
and objectives as far as unifying<lb />
our campus, because if we don't do<lb />
it now, we might set ourselves back<lb />
another ten years. If we're striv-<lb />
ing to be the leadership institute<lb />
for North Carolina, we can not do<lb />
that without direction said Jones.<lb />
Gregory Hedgepeth, eco-<lb />
nomics major, is Lead Chair of<lb />
The Ledonia Wright Cultral<lb />
Center Emissaries and Lead<lb />
Chair of the Social Outreach<lb />
Program. He described John-<lb />
son, and Johnson's presenta-<lb />
tion with one word; "Dynamic<lb />
"If you don't take something<lb />
from what he said Hedge-<lb />
peth pointed out. "Then you<lb />
weren't listening everything<lb />
he said hit on something that's<lb />
happened within some point<lb />
in time in my life or it's hap-<lb />
pened to somebody that I know<lb />
"At the end of the day I said<lb />
what I felt needed to be said, and<lb />
I feel comfortable with what I<lb />
said Johnson stated after his<lb />
speech. "In my presentation I<lb />
represent who it is that I am,<lb />
my experiences, my opportuni-<lb />
ties, the places I've been able<lb />
to go, the things I've been able<lb />
to do and who I am. But even<lb />
though I'm a black man, I still<lb />
have worked with white people,<lb />
Asian people, Indian people,<lb />
people of all races. As president<lb />
of student government Qat the<lb />
University of Toledo I wasn't<lb />
one-sided in my leadership, and<lb />
in working with organizations<lb />
that were predominantly white,<lb />
1 wasn't one-sided in my service.<lb />
I think that what we've got to<lb />
do is be able to get to a place as<lb />
people where we can honestly<lb />
be who we are and still com-<lb />
fortably speak to everybody<lb />

RANT OF THE DAY<lb />
I hate that my best friend calls me fat<lb />
but she's definitely fatter than I am.<lb />
CPS clickers are<lb />
the Devil<lb />
Or maybe it's just the teachers who<lb />
make us use them<lb />
STACY DAIL<lb />
OPINION WRITER<lb />
Biology book, check. Accounting book, check. Com-<lb />
munications book, check. CPS clicker, wait, what's that?<lb />
So, this is how my day shopping at the good old bookstore<lb />
went. After figuring out what a CPS clicker was, $20 of<lb />
my hard earned, not to mention quite rare money was<lb />
handed over for one of these things.<lb />
I've always been told that in order to succeed you must<lb />
take advantage of all opportunities, so of course buying<lb />
a 20 dollar dicker in addition to $.500 dollars worth of<lb />
books is all worth it, right?<lb />
Or maybe not. As most communication majors know,<lb />
CPS clickers are a "requirement" to take the classes, and<lb />
according to my teacher, a great tool that will enhance our<lb />
knowledge. Oh, and guess what, she was wrong.<lb />
For those of you who don't know, a CPS clicker,<lb />
"Classnxim Performance System is used to help students<lb />
interact with their teacher by being asked a question and<lb />
then choosing an answer on their clicker, usually A, B,<lb />
C, D, or true or false, which will send it to a receiver and<lb />
calculate the class answers which is then organized into<lb />
a class data table.<lb />
At the start of the semester we were told to bring<lb />
our blessed Clicker to class each day, and as the semes-<lb />
ter is hitting its peak, we have just started to use them.<lb />
Apparently, operating a CPSclicker system is quite dif-<lb />
ficult, at least for my not so technology-educated professor,<lb />
who barely knows how to work a PowerPoint Presentation.<lb />
Now that she has finally mastered the art of Clicker<lb />
working, our class gets to answer a question with our click-<lb />
ers, fit doesn't sound exciting, then you are getting the idea.<lb />
Sure, it's nice to see how much our class really isn't<lb />
listening with 75 percent of the class choosing the wrong<lb />
answer, but let's be real here, what is really so horrible about<lb />
asking usaquest ion and letting students yell out the answer<lb />
Of course, it isn't as technology based, but that's a good<lb />
thing for my professor. In addition to that perk, it would have<lb />
saved me, as well as 200 other students, 20 much needed<lb />
dollars. Oh, the horror ECU professors face when consid-<lb />
ering a verbal transaction instead of a technological one.<lb />
Although, there is one cool thing about the clickers:<lb />
Not only do we get to "vote" on what intelligent answer<lb />
we choose, we get to watch our teacher act as a human<lb />
tower, holding the clicker receiver as high up as she can,<lb />
in hopes to give us the best signal possible; so that each<lb />
student gets the opportunity to experience the excitement<lb />
and enhanced learning of choosing an answer.<lb />
OK, so maybe the Clickers or my teacher aren't as<lb />
horrible as I make them out to be, and keep in mind that<lb />
I said mayl)e, but, 1 really just do not understand the point<lb />
of Clickers and teachers who don't know how to use them.<lb />
Shouldn't ECU train its teachers before classes start<lb />
on how to use the technology available? By the time<lb />
classes start, everything should be running smoothly,<lb />
and that includes the technology and the teachers.<lb />
Just about every time my class meets, we spend 10-20<lb />
minutes waiting for our teacher to round up a tech guy<lb />
to fix the computer or work on the clicker system. This<lb />
leaves us rushing through the rest of class so that we will<lb />
cover what is scheduled to be taught. Instead of having<lb />
our teacher teach everything, we are left to read the rest<lb />
of the notes online, or we are just given a brief overview<lb />
of the uncovered material next class, after our visit from<lb />
the tech guy, of course.<lb />
So, this is my request to ECU professors or whoever<lb />
decides what book or materials we have to buy for the<lb />
class. If you are going to make us buy something, learn<lb />
how to use it so that we at least get our money's worth out<lb />
of it, and most importantly, make sure it's actually worth<lb />
using. Oh, and it you are wondering, in my opinion, the<lb />
clickers aren't worth using.<lb />
JUST ASK JANE<lb />
Need advice? Want answers? Just ask Jane.<lb />
Dear Jane,<lb />
How do you tell someone that they stink? I have a<lb />
friend who doesn't wash much and smells horrible It's<lb />
not a normal musk, it is like the smell of old milk; it's<lb />
bad In fact, it's nearly a tearjerker. Everyone smells it<lb />
around them but none of us have the heart to say any-<lb />
thing. What should I do?<lb />
Signed,<lb />
Sick of Stink<lb />
Dear Sick,<lb />
First, I'm really sorry you have to sutler. I certainly<lb />
couldn't stand to be around old milk . especially near<lb />
w here 1 live and play. You have to handle this situation<lb />
carefully because the last thing you want to do, obvi-<lb />
ously, is otlend someone. However, their smell is offensive<lb />
to you, giving you all the right you need to address it.<lb />
If the "stinker is female, you might want to get her a<lb />
cheap basket of soaplotionbody spray The kind you<lb />
might find at Bath & Body Works. They can be attained<lb />
from everywhere, including the local Wal-Mart<lb />
perhaps even Dollar General. Either way, she's getting<lb />
a present and you won't get an olfactory overload, of<lb />
sorts. If she asks you about it, you can say you saw it and<lb />
thought of her (the truth w ith a hole in the center). If she<lb />
doesn't start using it, pretend to be offended because you<lb />
spent precious money on her However, if the person in<lb />
question is male, the game changes quite a bit.<lb />
It's harder to say, "Hi 1 saw this Old Spice body<lb />
wash in the store the other day and thought of you. I<lb />
even put a bow on it Yet, you can always pick yourself<lb />
up a stick of deodorant and grab one for him, too (out of<lb />
the kindness of your heart and convenience, of course).<lb />
Since it is a guy, though, perhaps it would be easier to<lb />
handle directly. If it is a girl and you don't want to spend<lb />
any money on the problem, this would work, too. Tell<lb />
him or her that they smell! Although this is something<lb />
no one wants to hear, better this person know than<lb />
walk through life smelling like old cheese. He or she<lb />
will thank you someday, just be tactful about it. You<lb />
can say that other people have noticed or you can just<lb />
come right out with it and tell him or her you noticed<lb />
it yourself, whatever makes you more comfortable, but<lb />
don't let it all go.<lb />
Sincerely,<lb />
Jane<lb />
PIRATE RANTS<lb />
I personally apologize to the<lb />
girl I made a "fern" instead of a<lb />
"female I must not have copied<lb />
the entire rant over and it's totally<lb />
my fault. Sorry!<lb />
To all the people worried about<lb />
my flip-flops, gym shorts and<lb />
hoodie on the way to class this<lb />
past week Its 9 a.m its cold,<lb />
and I'm late to class. I could<lb />

of my fashion sense. BTW: I am<lb />
from eastern North Carolina, I<lb />
know it will be 75 degrees by<lb />
lunchtime!<lb />
I'm not going to name names<lb />
but you know who you are.<lb />
You're nothing but a selfish and<lb />
insensitive person. I've been<lb />
your friend longer than he's been<lb />
your boyfriend and that doesn't<lb />
seem to matter to you. It's like<lb />
I've become invisible and I know<lb />
you think he's the one but you<lb />
also thought that about your last<lb />
three boyfriends. So I'm going<lb />
to do you a favor and end the<lb />
friendship that you so obviously<lb />
don't care about.<lb />
Why didn't Rose share her<lb />
floating door with Jack?<lb />
Every time I see a man in uniform<lb />
I wanna say, " Loosen up my<lb />
buttons baby Don't laugh,<lb />
every girl feels the same way!<lb />
To the "black" person that said<lb />
that they don't think that both<lb />
the NAACP and the BSU are<lb />
necessary, that's because you've<lb />
been brainwashed and have lost<lb />
your blackness. You probably<lb />
walk around with your collar<lb />
popped and wear Sperry's.<lb />
To whoever it was that tried to<lb />
defend those ugly sunglasses<lb />
by making reference to Jackie<lb />
O. I can guarantee that most<lb />
girls who wear them don't wear<lb />
them for reasons such as that.<lb />
They wear them in an attempt to<lb />
conform to a social group.<lb />
I'm in love with my Iff Mexican.<lb />
Pirates win! Great game guys!<lb />
I'm really proud to be a Pirate!<lb />
Don't you love it when your<lb />
best friend gets a boyfriend<lb />
and they always pick them over<lb />
you? I know I love to lose my<lb />
best friend to a guy. Especially<lb />
when you said you d never "pick<lb />
a guy over your friends Yeah,<lb />
some friend you've become.<lb />
It would make me really happy if<lb />
my neighbors got evicted.<lb />
When I'm with my boyfriend, I<lb />
think about you. When I wake up,<lb />
I think about you. Before I go to<lb />
sleep, I think about you. After all<lb />
this time, I still think about you.<lb />
I wish I never would have broke<lb />
up with you, it honestly was the<lb />
biggest mistake of my life. I'm<lb />
with someone new, but he isn't<lb />
you. He will never be you.<lb />
Who are you and where are my<lb />
pants?<lb />
My goal is to be responsible for<lb />
every rant on this page.<lb />
Why do teachers at ECU give<lb />
all multiple-choice tests? WTF<lb />
is that about?<lb />
You're at a football game. Stand<lb />
up and cheer.<lb />
To the person ranting about<lb />
the Marching Band Halloween<lb />
Show: The Marching Band was<lb />
unable to perform the Halloween<lb />
Show this year due to the fact<lb />
that the last two home games<lb />
were Homecoming and Military<lb />
Appreciation day. The Marching<lb />
Band would have done the show<lb />
if ECU had not scheduled five<lb />
home games in a row.<lb />
I would just like to say thank you<lb />
to the person who broke into<lb />
my car and stole my golf clubs.<lb />
I hope you burn in hell.<lb />
My boyfriend wears hoodies,<lb />
plays video games and is the<lb />
most awesome guy ever. You<lb />
ladies need to learn to appreciate<lb />
your men for who they are and<lb />
not for who you think they should<lb />
be.<lb />
I just don't believe anything you<lb />
say anymore. .<lb />
This is why I love my roommate:<lb />
I just fell down a flight of steps<lb />
in my apartment and I couldn't<lb />
move for like thirty minutes,<lb />
so when my roomie got home<lb />
and saw me on the floor she<lb />
went to the store and got me<lb />
icyhot patches and taco bell for<lb />
supper.<lb />
I got a dollar, I got a dollar,<lb />
I got a dollar hey hey hey<lb />
hey! It's about the only<lb />
thing I have left after tuition!<lb />
I know Ashton and Demi have<lb />
been married for a while but<lb />
why? What was he thinking?<lb />
I'm 19 years old and available<lb />
whenever he decides he wants<lb />
someone under the age of fifty.<lb />
Soul mate where are you?<lb />
Where do you go when you're<lb />
lonely? Where do you go when<lb />
you're blue? Where do you go<lb />
when your lonely, I'll follow you.<lb />
When the stars go blue.<lb />
The best part of my day is<lb />
snuggling with my boyfriend.<lb />
I don't want to be your whole life,<lb />
just your favorite part.<lb />
I have a two-strap book bag but<lb />
I gangsta lean as I walk so I rock<lb />
it with one strap.<lb />
The downtown scene on<lb />

FYI, all the movies listed in Ben<lb />

I can't finish anything.<lb />
Tom is not my friend.<lb />
When did "Grey's Anatomy"<lb />
become a cult?<lb />
Do people realize the creator of<lb />

have one single shrine dedicated<lb />
to him?<lb />
I think we should all be charitable,<lb />
so I'll date an ug-o this week.<lb />
Halloween, the perfect excuse<lb />
for girls to skank out.<lb />
Pirate Rants, my anti-drug!<lb />
For the ranter who said, "Stop<lb />
liking girls who wear leotards<lb />

then you'll realize why "Girls who<lb />
wear leotards" are catching your<lb />
friend's eye!<lb />
My heater is emitting fumes<lb />
The fumes are making me high.<lb />
Maintenance won't fix my fume-<lb />
filled heater. I'm still high. Am I<lb />
breaking a law? I've got to be<lb />
breaking some kind of policy.<lb />
Life is spontaneous, live it that way.<lb />
Trick-or-Treat, smell my feet, give<lb />
me something good to eat. If you<lb />
don't I don't care I'll show you my<lb />
underwear!<lb />
To the person who wrote in about<lb />
"lazy guys" wearing sweatpants<lb />
and hoodies to class I am one<lb />
of those "lazy guys" that you<lb />
talk about. Sorry some of us<lb />
guys aren't metro sexual and<lb />
don't get up at 6 a.m. to do our<lb />
hair and throw on pea-coats! I<lb />
mean seriously I go to school<lb />
to learn, not impress your ass<lb />
get over it<lb />
I hate it when people don't use<lb />
capital letters online.<lb />
Dear friend, who used to be<lb />
best friend, now only every other<lb />
week friend, you suck.<lb />
I trimmed my toenails and<lb />
accidentally cut one way too<lb />
short. It hurts like woah.<lb />
No, no. The size of your<lb />
sunglasses really can measure<lb />
how skanky you are.<lb />
Is there a law in Greenville that<lb />
no matter how crappy your car<lb />
is you must have huge shiny<lb />
rims on it?<lb />
Girls have it so easy for<lb />
Halloween, all they have to do<lb />
is pick an occupation and slut<lb />
it up.<lb />
I drink my coffee with a straw!<lb />
What difference does it make<lb />
that I wear big sun glasse, carry<lb />
my two strap book-bag on one<lb />
shoulder, wear white after Labor<lb />
Day, wear sandals when it snows<lb />
or any other fashion mistake?<lb />
And more importantly why do<lb />
you care? I mean I am the one<lb />
who supposedly looks stupid<lb />
right? Or maybe you are so<lb />
concerned what others are doing<lb />
than to look at yourself. You are<lb />
probably ugly anyway.<lb />
Damn it, I always miss the good<lb />
parts because of rants.<lb />
You should make an insert, just<lb />
like sports, just for pirate rants!<lb />
I wear sandals because<lb />

Gay in the main<lb />
Has our society gained a cultural<lb />
queer eye?<lb />
RYAN COBEY<lb />
OPINION WRITER<lb />
I saw a very disturbing picture last week.<lb />
Rocker Tommy Lee and the winner of his "Rock Star:<lb />
Supernova" reality show, Lukas Rossi, kissed last Tuesday<lb />
in what could be considered a grand entrance to Frankie J's<lb />
album release party.<lb />
And I don't mean a quick peck on the cheek. I don't mean<lb />
those kinds of kisses your mother used to give you before<lb />
bed. I'm talking spit-swappin face-to-face, tonsil tickling<lb />
that would stop the Village People at mid fYT<lb />
Apparently, this isn't the first time Tommy Lee has kissed<lb />
another man. In July, Lee and fellow rocker Dave Navarro<lb />
shared a kiss during a promotion for their new show. The<lb />
list goes on, however. As I dug even deeper into this interest-<lb />
ing albeit appalling man-on-man escapade I found that Lee<lb />
apparently was not Navarro's first experience with the ever-<lb />
so-popular public display of gay affection, oh no. Navarro got<lb />
his first taste, if I may, of gay PDA when lie made out with<lb />
Anthony Kiedis in a Red Hot Chili Peppers music video.<lb />
So, we now have an ever-growing, Hollywood-created<lb />
"elite" society of famous people like Tommy Lee, Madonna<lb />
and Britney Spears who seem to be waging a media war on<lb />
the more conservative folk in our country. People love it. They<lb />
are embracing this new idea, new concept of sexual openness,<lb />
and in turn, it is essentially becoming "cool to be gay.<lb />
That's right. Many will deny it, and even more will refuse<lb />
to accept it, but it is truer than at any point in time in our<lb />
society - gay is in the main.<lb />
Fights for gay marriages are fought and won on a daily<lb />
basis in our country. Children in ourcurrent society are being<lb />
raised on TV, many of which are much more open to the idea<lb />
of homosexuality. Take "Will and Grace for instance. It is<lb />
a very stereotypical show of being gay in the big city. Gays<lb />
in media are mainly portrayed like Will - white, successful<lb />
and fashionable. Just as television portrays some African-<lb />
Americans as underprivileged city dwellers, some gays are<lb />
portrayed as good-looking and popular people. How many<lb />
of you now see a huge flaw in our society?<lb />
Now I'm a fairly open person. In fact, I even have my<lb />
share of gay friends. They are respectful and fun to be around,<lb />
but that in no way changes my beliefs on certain ideas. The<lb />
concept of marriage is one that engages a person in a spiritual<lb />
life-long relationship with another of the opposite sex. I obvi-<lb />
ously am not a huge supporter of gay marriage, but rarely do<lb />
I advocate my disdain for it either. However, being gay now<lb />
not only involves those with actual homosexual feelings, but<lb />
also contains an ever-growing group of individuals who are<lb />
simply jumping on the bandwagon of America's newest fad.<lb />
Personally, I place these people on the same level as the racial<lb />
"posers" from the T-Mobile commercials.<lb />
Tommy Lee and Dave Navarro may not be gay, but that's<lb />
apparently what they want us to think. Perhaps they are<lb />
simply swapping spit for the sakeof exposure? I mean, "Rock<lb />
Star Supernova's" ratings are down from last season; maybe<lb />
they are trying to pull a Janet Jackson and gain a little more<lb />
popularity through controversy. Or, maybe homosexuality<lb />
might just be the "in" thing. After all, it seems like all the<lb />
cool people are doing it. We've already begun to see the same<lb />
sorts of things occur through thousands of tagged pictures<lb />
placed on Facebook.com every weekend. Will a simple pat<lb />
on the butt between athletes evolve into a kiss on the cheek?<lb />
Hey, I'm just throwing out thoughts.<lb />
Daylight Saving<lb />
Time history<lb />
JUSTIN SUMMERS<lb />
OPINION WRITER<lb />
It's that time of the year again where everyone must set<lb />
their clocks back an hour to observe the Daylight Saving<lb />
Time. Every spring we move our clocks one hour ahead and<lb />
"lose" an hour during the night and each fall we move our<lb />
clocks back one hour and "gain" an extra hour at the bar tor a<lb />
night. But Daylight Saving Time (and not Daylight Savings<lb />
Time with an "s") wasn't just created to confuse our schedules.<lb />
The phrase "spring forward, fall back" helps people<lb />
remember how Daylight Saving Time affects their clocks.<lb />
At 2 am. on the first Sunday in April, we set our ckxks for-<lb />
ward one hour ahead of standard time or rather we "spring<lb />
forward And then we "fall back" at 8 a.m. on the last Sunday<lb />
in October by setting our clock back one hour and dius<lb />
returning to Standard Time.<lb />
The change to Daylight Saving Time allows to us to use<lb />
less energy in lighting our homes by taking advantage of the<lb />
longer and later daylight hours. More daylight, saves millions<lb />
on energy costs oflighting homes in the morning and at night,<lb />
as well as decreases trafTic accidents among other things.<lb />
The idea of daylight saving was first conceived by<lb />
Benjamin Franklin in an essay, "An Economical Project<lb />
during his stay as an American delegate in Paris in 1784. The<lb />
idea of DST was highly accepted throughout the scholarly<lb />
community and in the following years, DST was enacted in<lb />
countries like Germany, France and Britain.<lb />
Daylight Saving Time wasn't instituted in the United<lb />
States until World War I in order to save energy for war<lb />
production by taking advantage of the later hours of daylight<lb />
between April and October. During World War 11 the federal<lb />
government again required the states to observe the time<lb />
change. Between the wars and after World War 11, states and<lb />
communities chose whether or not to observe Daylight Saving<lb />
Time. In 1966, Congress passed the Uniform Time Act, which<lb />
standardized the length of Daylight Saving Time for all.<lb />
A new law to extend DST to the first Sunday in Novem-<lb />
ber will take effort in 2007, with the purpose of providing<lb />
trick-or-treaters more light and therefore more safety from<lb />
traffic accidents. Child pedestrian deaths are four times<lb />
higher on Halloween than on any other night of the year.<lb />
For decades, candy manufacturers lobbied for a Daylight<lb />
Saving Time extension to Halloween, as many of the young<lb />
trick-or-treaters gathering candy are not allowed out after<lb />
dark, and thus an added hour of light means a big holiday<lb />
treat for the candy industry.<lb />
Over the years DST has had numerous in ipacts in a vari-<lb />
ety of unexpected areas. For instance every year patrons of<lb />
bars that don't stay open past 2 a.m. lose one hour of drinking<lb />
time on the day when Daylight Saving Time springs forward<lb />
one hour. In Athens, Ohio, site of Ohio University, over 1,000<lb />
students and other late night partiers chanted "Freedom as<lb />
they threw liquor bottles at the police attempting to control<lb />
the riot after the bars kicked people out. In 1999 three ter-<lb />
rorists were blown up after a bomb they planted on a bus<lb />
in Gaza blew up an hour earlier than expected due to DST.<lb />
Daylight Saving Time is a perennial nuisance to most,<lb />
and thoughtless schedule change to others; personally, I just<lb />
was interested in how it came about. As Biggie Smalls once<lb />
said "If you don't know, now you know<lb /><lb /><pb facs="00059456_tn_0006" /><lb />

Halloween how-to<lb />
No need to sprint to the store in a panic, there's still plenty of time to get a costume together for Halloween.<lb />
Dressing up doesn't<lb />
take much planning<lb />
SARAH CAMPBELL<lb />
ASSISTANT FEATURES EDITOR<lb />
Almost every Halloween<lb />
I make a pact that I will stay<lb />
home in my warm cozy bed while<lb />
the rest of Greenville is out and<lb />
about. I have never felt the need<lb />
to venture into the middle of a<lb />
crowded streets of downtown or<lb />
squeeze myself into a jam-packed<lb />
bar, but every year, despite my<lb />
best intentions, I get dragged to<lb />
such locales.<lb />
Being dragged out against<lb />
my will often leaves me search-<lb />
ing for some sort of Halloween<lb />
costume to throw together at the<lb />
last minute. Granted, you would<lb />
think I would learn my lesson<lb />
and just buy something ahead<lb />
of time, but procrastination is<lb />
such a tough addiction to break.<lb />
For those who find them-<lb />
selves in a similar situation to<lb />
my own, have no fear; there<lb />
are plenty of costumes that<lb />
can be whipped together in a<lb />
moment's notice by adding just a<lb />
dash of creativity.<lb />
One of the easiest costumes<lb />
of all time to pull off is becoming<lb />
a rock star. You can buy a play<lb />
microphone from a local toy store,<lb />
add some cool accessories like<lb />
fake eyelashes and a wig, pull on a<lb />
dress from one of those high school<lb />
dances, and before you know it, you<lb />
are a rock star. Guys can easily pull<lb />
off this look by wearing a muscle<lb />
shirt and some black pants.<lb />
Dressing up as a dancer is made<lb />
simple by adding a few trademark<lb />
items to your wardrobe. Buy a pair<lb />
of leggingstights, a leotard and a<lb />
pair of ballet flats (psstyou can<lb />
get them for around1 2 at Target).<lb />
I'ull your hair up into sleek bun<lb />
and make your make-up stand out<lb />
with bright colors such as hot pink<lb />
blush and red lipstick.<lb />
If you don't want to spend<lb />
any money at all, you can always<lb />
simply step into your closet and<lb />
work with what you have.<lb />
Anyone can dress up as a pro-<lb />
fessor, lawyer or news anchor if<lb />
you have a business suit.<lb />
Throw on the most colorful suit<lb />
you have and bring along accesso-<lb />
ries such as a briefcase and glasses.<lb />
If you find that you have a ton<lb />
of winter accessories, bundle up<lb />
in a hat, scarf and gloves and call<lb />
yourself a snow bunny. For those<lb />
of you who happen to have a pair of<lb />
snow boots, your costume will be<lb />
even more complete.<lb />
Remember that Halloween is<lb />
all about fun so it doesn't matter<lb />
what you are as long as you're<lb />
having a blast. Comfort is key<lb />
when putting together any cos-<lb />
tume, so make sure that you pick<lb />
something that you won't be<lb />

Stephen Honaker rode across the country this summer.<lb />
Raises proceeds and awareness for<lb />
affordable housing organizations<lb />
ELISA BIZZOTTO<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Many '21-year-olds who are still working toward<lb />
their college degrees may spend their summers work-<lb />
ing mindless part-time jobs, enjoying the freedoms<lb />
that are still available to those who have yet to entered<lb />
the professional work force.<lb />
Not Stephen Honaker.<lb />
Last May, upon completing his fourth year here<lb />
at ECU, he volunteered to raise over $4,000 to bike<lb />
8,800 miles across the central United States In a mere<lb />
two months.<lb />
Why?<lb />
Well, according to Honaker, it was the opportu-<lb />
nity to see the country and the feeling that this<lb />
trip could meet his need for the fulfillment that<lb />
comes with helping others in need.<lb />
Born and raised in Richmond, Va Ste-<lb />
phen is an only child who grew up with very<lb />
supportive parents, excellent church atten-<lb />
dance and service helping others through<lb />
Christian mission trips throughout his youth.<lb />
In 2002, Honaker enrolled at ECU as an<lb />
undergraduate and has spent the last five years in<lb />
Greenville working toward his May 2007 gradu-<lb />
ation as a sculpting major. The compassionate<lb />
32-year-old came upon Bike and Build, the inde-<lb />
pendent nonprofit organization that works with<lb />
young adults to raise funds through cross country<lb />
cycling trips to donate to affordable housing orga-<lb />
nizations, when a friend who had just completed<lb />
a trip with the organization was relaying stories<lb />
about her experience.<lb />
"Her enthusiasm sparked my interest to check .<lb />
out the Web site which ultimately made my deci-<lb />
sion to do the trip said Honaker.<lb />
While he admitted that he did not believe<lb />
he was in the best physical shape to tackle such<lb />
a strenuous feat, he said that he soon realized<lb />
it was more mental endurance that would be<lb />
demanded of him.<lb />
The just over two-month trip began on May 20<lb />
in Virginia Beach, Va. From their starting location,<lb />
the central United States route took Honaker and<lb />
fellow riders west through Virginia, the Blue Ridge<lb />
Mountains into West Virginia, across the plains<lb />
of Indiana, Illinois, Missouri and Kansas, up and<lb />
across the Rockies in western Colorado and then<lb />
on through Utah, Wyoming, Idaho and finally into<lb />
Oregon. Honaker and others reached their destina-<lb />
tion in Cannon Beach, Ore on July 86.<lb />
"Some of the best experiences were riding<lb />
across Virginia, crossing the Mississippi River,<lb />
climbing to 12,000 feet in the Rocky Mountains<lb />
and jumping in the Pacific Ocean after riding SHOO<lb />
miles Honaker said. "I really gained insight of<lb />
the affordable housing problems throughout the<lb />
country. I also got to experience towns with a<lb />
population of 88 people, all the way up to big cities<lb />
like St. Louis and Portland, Ore<lb />
He explained that he bonded closely with the<lb />
28 other participants of the trip, each of them fol-<lb />
lowing a routinely similar pattern everyday.<lb />
Honaker relayed that they would awake<lb />

Where you will discover<lb />

KORRI-LEE SMITH<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Everyone seems to celebrate<lb />
Halloween, but very few people<lb />
know how it actually began.<lb />
Though the subject of history may<lb />
sound boring to some, the birth of<lb />
Halloween is anything but dull.<lb />
About 2,000 years ago, a<lb />
group known as the Celts resided<lb />
in the area that is now Ireland,<lb />
the United Kingdom and north-<lb />
ern France. Each year, the Celts<lb />
celebrated their new year on the<lb />
first of November.<lb />
This day marked the end<lb />
of summer and harvest, and<lb />
the beginning of a dark, cold<lb />
winter. As was frequently the case<lb />
throughout history, winter was a<lb />
time of year that many associated<lb />
with human death. The Celts<lb />
believed the night before each new<lb />
year began, the boundary that sep-<lb />
arated the worlds of the living and<lb />
dead became indistinguishable.<lb />
As a result, Oct. 31 marked the<lb />
celebration of Samhain. This day<lb />
was believed to bring the ghosts<lb />
of the dead back to earth.<lb />
Though the otherworldly spir-<lb />
its caused trouble and damaged<lb />
crops, they also made it easier for<lb />
Druids, or Celtic priests, to make<lb />
prophecies about the future. The<lb />
predictions acted as an important<lb />
source of comfort and direction<lb />
during the long, dark winters.<lb />
In observance of Samhain,<lb />
Druids constructed huge sacrifice<lb />
bonfires where the people could<lb />
gather and offer burnt crops<lb />
and animals to the Celtic deities.<lb />
During the celebration, the Celts<lb />
would wear costumes typically<lb />
made of animal heads and skins.<lb />
The group also became accus-<lb />
tomed to telling each other's for-<lb />
tunes during the event. As a means<lb />
of marking the end of the holiday,<lb />
the Celts would relight their<lb />
hearth fires using flames from<lb />
the sacred bonfire. The flames<lb />
acted as a means of protection.<lb />
Unfortunately for the Celts,<lb />
by A.D. 43, the Romans had<lb />
conquered the majority of their<lb />
territory. During the course of<lb />
the 400 years they reigned, two<lb />
of Rome's festivals were com-<lb />
bined with the traditional Celtic<lb />
celebrations of Samhain. The<lb />
first of these festivals was known<lb />
as Feralia, a day in late October<lb />
when the Romans would com-<lb />
memorate the passing of the dead.<lb />
The second of Rome's festi-<lb />
vals was a day set aside to honor<lb />
Pomona, the goddess of fruit and<lb />
trees. The apple acted as the symbol<lb />
of Pomona and perhaps provides<lb />
an explanation for the Halloween<lb />
tradition "bobbing for apples.<lb />
Around the 800s, Christian-<lb />
ity and its influence had spread<lb />
throughout the Celtic lands. In<lb />
the seventh century. Pope Boniface<lb />
IV selected Nov. 1 to act as All<lb />
Saints Day. The pope designated<lb />
this holiday as a time to honor<lb />
saints and martyrs. Historians<lb />

Colds are nothing<lb />
to be sniffed at<lb />
SHANNON DAVIS<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Sneezing, scratchy throat and<lb />
runny nose; everyone knows the<lb />
first signs of a cold as it is prob-<lb />
ably the most frequent illness<lb />
known. Although the common<lb />
cold is usually mild, with symp-<lb />
toms lasting one to two weeks, it<lb />
is a leading cause of doctor visits<lb />
and missed days from school and<lb />
work. According to the Centers for<lb />
Disease Control and Prevention,<lb />
22 million school days are lost<lb />
annually in the United States due<lb />
to the common cold.<lb />
A cold is a contagious viral<lb />
disease, which infects the soft<lb />
lining of the nose. More than 100<lb />
different viruses can cause the<lb />
common cold.<lb />
As people age, they develop<lb />
immunity to many of the viruses<lb />
that cause common colds. Colds<lb />
occur less frequently in adulthood<lb />
than they do during childhood,<lb />
though it is possible to come<lb />
down with a cold when someone<lb />
is exposed to cold viruses, has an<lb />
allergic reaction that affects the<lb />
nasal passages or has a weakened<lb />
immune system.<lb />
Nasal secretions containing<lb />
cold viruses contaminate the<lb />
hands of people w ith colds as a<lb />
result of nose blowing, covering<lb />
sneezes and touching the nose.<lb />
Also, cold viruses may contami-<lb />
nate objects and surfaces in the<lb />
environment of a cold sufferer.<lb />
Both children and adults are<lb />
more susceptible to colds in the<lb />
fall and winter, when children<lb />
are in school and most people<lb />
are spending much of their time<lb />
indoors.<lb />
Most people will catch a cold<lb />
two to four times a year.<lb />
A person is contagious from<lb />
the day before the illness breaks<lb />
out until one to three days after<lb />
they feel better. Airborne droplets<lb />
spread the infection when the suf-<lb />
ferer coughs or sneezes. The most<lb />
common way of catching a cold is<lb />
from the hands of someone who<lb />
has the virus and then puts them<lb />
close to their eyes or nose.<lb />
The major symptoms of a<lb />
cold are a sore throat, coughing,<lb />
sneezing, runny nose, pain when<lb />
swallowing, difficulty breath-<lb />
ing, a headache and an above<lb />
normal body temperature. Avoid-<lb />
ing people who already have colds<lb />
and crowded places with the risk of<lb />
infection can prevent colds.<lb />
Usually a common cold causes<lb />
no serious trouble and symp-<lb />
toms and will clear up in one to<lb />

THE EAST CAROLINIAN PULSE<lb />
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 31, 2006<lb />
HALLOWEEN<lb />
continued from A5<lb />
believe the pope established All<lb />
Saints Day as a means of replacing<lb />
the Celtic festival of the dead with<lb />
a church-sanctioned holiday. This<lb />
holiday also went by the names of<lb />
All-Hallows and All-Hallowmas.<lb />
The night before the celebration,<lb />
the night of Samhain, became<lb />
known as All-Hallows Eve and<lb />
eventually. Halloween.<lb />
In A.D. 1000, the church<lb />
established Nov. i as All Souls<lb />
Day, a day to honor the dead<lb />
This day, similar to Samhain. was<lb />
celebrated with bonfires, parades<lb />
and dressing up in costumes such<lb />
as saints, angels and devils. All<lb />
Saints Eve, All Saints and All<lb />
Souls were three days of celebra-<lb />
tion that interconnected and were<lb />
later called Hallow mas.<lb />
As Europeans began immi-<lb />
grating to America, their Hallow-<lb />
een customs traveled with them.<lb />
Due to the strict Protestant belief<lb />
system in early New England,<lb />
Halloween celebrations were rare.<lb />
Over time, the beliefs and customs<lb />
of different European groups, as<lb />
well as the American Indians,<lb />
interlocked and formed a distinct<lb />
American version of Halloween.<lb />
During the nineteenth cen-<lb />
tury, many new immigrants<lb />
flooded America. Again, new-<lb />
traditions were established and<lb />
added to the Halloween cel-<lb />
ebrations. The twentieth century<lb />
marked a change in the purpose<lb />
of celebrating Halloween. Ameri-<lb />
cans began using this day to<lb />
hold community and neighborly<lb />
get-togethers, while moving<lb />
away from the superstitious and<lb />
religious principles.<lb />
Today, many Americans still<lb />
find time to celebrate this age-old<lb />
holiday. For most children, the<lb />
idea of dressing up and getting<lb />
free candy is all but a miracle.<lb />
For many ECU students,<lb />
Halloween is a time to release<lb />
some stress and change up the<lb />
monotony of school. I low ever you<lb />
choose to celebrate the big day,<lb />
take time to remember its ancient<lb />
origins. Perhaps if we all acted as<lb />
Celts and made predictions and<lb />
wishes, we could find ourselves<lb />
enjoying a long winter break<lb />

HONAKER<lb />
continued from A5<lb />
between "i and 5:30 am, eating<lb />
a brief breakfast and packing<lb />
up their belongings to head out<lb />
and bike anywhere from 70 to<lb />
100 miles each day. There were<lb />
almost 10 days out of the two<lb />
months that were predetermined<lb />
building days in which partici-<lb />
pants did not cycle, but rather<lb />
spent the days assisting in the con-<lb />
struction of affordable homes.<lb />
Honaker said that for the<lb />
majority of his trip the participants<lb />
worked with Habitat tor Humanity,<lb />
the international volunteer afford-<lb />
able housing group, although<lb />
Bike and Build is not officially<lb />
affiliated with the organization.<lb />
"The most rewarding part of<lb />
working with Habitat and other<lb />
similar organizations was actually<lb />
meeting the people that would<lb />
soon raise a family in the house<lb />
we were building Honaker said.<lb />
"It gave us each a connection to<lb />
the community because we were<lb />
creating a better living situation<lb />
for those in need<lb />
Some of the jobs Honaker and<lb />
other participants were involved<lb />
with included siding, painting,<lb />
laying foundations, construction,<lb />
cleaning out debris and spread-<lb />
ing out dirt. He added that they<lb />
basically did whatever was needed<lb />
for the professional construction<lb />
crews to be able to come in and<lb />
have as much done as possible.<lb />
On two dates throughout the<lb />
trip, June r and July Honaker<lb />
recorded his experiences from the<lb />
road which are displayed on the<lb />
Bike and Build official Web site,<lb />
bikeandbuild.org, and they are<lb />
true testaments of his admiration<lb />
for the organization and those<lb />
involved and for the experience<lb />
he was able to partake in.<lb />
Four months later, the deter-<lb />
mined Honaker still maintains<lb />
that apparent enthusiasm for his<lb />
involvement with the organization<lb />
and his overall experience. He said<lb />
that it offered him the perspec-<lb />
tive of seeing his life as a blessing<lb />
and it has made him grateful for<lb />
having what he does and having<lb />
the opportunity to help those that<lb />
are in great need.<lb />
Honaker said that he would<lb />
encourage anyone who wants<lb />
to travel the country "in the<lb />
most stimulating and rewarding<lb />
way and who wants to gain a<lb />
significant amount of self-con-<lb />
fidence while getting into the<lb />
best shape,of their life to visit<lb />
the Web site and look into the<lb />
once in a lifetime experience.<lb />
"The most significant thing<lb />
I gained from my involvement<lb />
with Bike and Build is my self-<lb />
confidence. I feel that if I can<lb />
ride my bike 3,800 miles over<lb />
12 states, three major mountain<lb />
ranges and want to do it again, I'<lb />

tions include inflammation of<lb />

and pneumonia.<lb />
There is no effective way of<lb />
treating an ordinary cold. If the<lb />
sufferer has no other infection<lb />
than the common cold and it goes<lb />
away in one to two weeks, there is<lb />
no reason to see a doctor. Since a<lb />
virus causes a cold, antibiotics are<lb />
not necessary. Symptoms such as<lb />
cough, sore throat, nasal conges-<lb />
tion and headache can be relieved<lb />
by a variety of over-the-counter<lb />
medicines. You can get advice from<lb />
a pharmacist about which is most<lb />
suitable for you and your symptoms.<lb />
The washing of hands after<lb />
contact with a cold sufferer,<lb />
keeping fingers out of the eyes<lb />
and nose and avoiding other<lb />
people coughing and sneezing in<lb />
your direction can help prevent<lb />
catching a cold. Cold viruses are<lb />
removed by the mechanical action<lb />
of washing hands, not from the<lb />
actual soap or detergent. Carry-<lb />
ing hand sanitizer and rubbing<lb />
briskly when using it can also help<lb />
prevent you from catching a cold.<lb />
The most effective way to prevent<lb />
infection is frequent hand-washing<lb />
and keeping your hands to yourself.<lb />

game-tying touchdown with IS<lb />
night on a short Ben I lartman field<lb />
goal and some late heroics from<lb />
Travis Williams.<lb />
The interception by Eddie<lb />
Hicks in the third quarter<lb />
put Southern Miss (4-4, 2-2<lb />
Conference USA) up 17-10 after the<lb />
two teams were tied at halftinie.<lb />
Williams said the defense told<lb />
Pinkney to just get them to<lb />
overtime and they would win it.<lb />
Williams proved to be<lb />
prophetic as Pinkney said he just<lb />
wanted to redeem himself for his<lb />
earlier interception.<lb />
"I just felt like throwing the<lb />
interception for a touchdown, 1 let<lb />
the team down said Pinkney, who<lb />
finished 20-of-33 for 197 yards<lb />
and two picks. "I thought about<lb />
my teammates more than 1 thought<lb />
about myself and I felt like I had to<lb />
redeem myself by getting us into<lb />
the end zone<lb />
Getting into the end zone was<lb />
no easy chore as the Southern Miss<lb />
defense, ranked as the number two<lb />
scoring defense in C-USA, had<lb />
not allowed the ECU offense in<lb />
once. The only touchdown for the<lb />
Pirates (4-4, 3-2 C-USA) came on<lb />
a 96-yard kickoff return by Chris<lb />
Johnson after the Golden Eagles<lb />
had taken a 7-3 lead two minutes<lb />
into the second quarter.<lb />
The ECU defense allowed<lb />
just one touchdown as well, and<lb />
surrendered a meager 1HO yards<lb />
of total offense to a team averag-<lb />
ing better than 310 yards a game.<lb />
ECU head coach Skip Holtz said<lb />
winning a game with the defense<lb />
is something he's been waiting to<lb />
see from his young team.<lb />
"Every game we had won up<lb />
until this point, we had scored<lb />
over 30 points said Holtz. "I told<lb />
the defense 1 want to win, 10-6, 1<lb />
want to win 7-3, I want to win a<lb />
low-scoring game, I want to win<lb />
on defense. If you're gonna be a<lb />
great football team, you've got to<lb />
have a great defense<lb />
The defense did its part late<lb />
in the game as the Pirates forced<lb />
a Southern Miss punt with just<lb />
under five minutes remaining.<lb />
ECU drove 60 yards on 10 plays<lb />
for the game-tying score, ending<lb />
on a two-yard fourth-down quar-<lb />
terback draw into the end zone.<lb />
With a pair of fumbles on the<lb />
drive and the Pirates able to retain<lb />
possession of the ball both times,<lb />
Holtz said the last five minutes of<lb />
the game were difficult to endure.<lb />
Following a Brandon<lb />
Fractious one-yard run and an<lb />
incomplete pass, the Pirates faced<lb />
a third-and-9. Pinkney then threw<lb />
a perfect pass to the left sideline<lb />
where Aundrae Allison made<lb />
an over-the-shoulder catch for a<lb />
26-yard gam.<lb />
Two plays later, Pinkney hit<lb />
Steven Rogers for a pickup of 11, but<lb />
Rogers fumbled the ball and it was<lb />
recovered by Southern Miss. The<lb />
officials reviewed the play and ruled<lb />
that Rogers was down by contact.<lb />
A 13-yard pass to Johnson<lb />
set the Pirates up inside the 10.<lb />
Pinkney decided to run it in<lb />
himself on the next play, but was<lb />
stripped of the ball at the three,<lb />
but Matt Butler fell on it and ECU<lb />
faced a second-and-goal. Dives by<lb />
Fractious and Brandon Simmons<lb />
netted only a yard collectively,<lb />
leading to the fourth-down call.<lb />
The two teams traded<lb />
timeouts before Pinkney's draw to<lb />
tie the game at 17-17.<lb />
"The offense didn't play<lb />
particularly well, but when<lb />
we needed a drive, they came<lb />
through Holtz said. "1 was<lb />
determined we were gonna run it<lb />
in. I wasn't gonna take a sack and<lb />
get us behind the chains. I made<lb />
the decision to have James run it<lb />
in and he did a great job of getting<lb />
it into the end zone<lb />
The Golden Eagles won the<lb />
toss and elected to begin the over-<lb />
time on defense. The Pirates ran<lb />
the ball eight times and had five<lb />
plays from inside the Southern<lb />
Miss six before sending out Hart-<lb />
man. Holtz said the conservative<lb />
play-calling was by design.<lb />
"When we got into overtime,<lb />
1 told the defense I was gonna<lb />
give them a chance to win it<lb />
Holtz said. "I wasn't gonna throw<lb />
it or take a sack. If you don't gain<lb />

over William & Mary 133-110<lb />
and Towson 158-81<lb />
They said it<lb />
"It was a huge win against<lb />
Southern Miss from a pro-<lb />
gram standpoint. I talked all<lb />
week with the team about<lb />
trying to keep things in per-<lb />
spective and not look at the<lb />
big picture. That was a game<lb />
about our program verse their<lb />
program and us trying to gain<lb />
some respect back from where<lb />
the series had been. We have<lb />
had a hard time with South-<lb />
ern Miss and we went into<lb />
this game and we said if we're<lb />
going to win then we've got to<lb />
win at their game<lb />
-Skip Holtz, ECU Football Coach<lb />
"There was so much joy, excite-<lb />
ment and celebration in those<lb />
players. So many of the older<lb />
guys had tears in their eyes in<lb />
the locker room after the game.<lb />
It was a great feeling. It's one<lb />
of die reasons you coach is for<lb />
games like that, to be in that<lb />
locker room afterwards. You<lb />
hear it all the time; it's not<lb />
about the prize at the end it's<lb />
about the journey along the<lb />
way. It is really nice to see so<lb />
many of these players growing<lb />
in so many different ways. Not<lb />
just as football players but as<lb />
young men and students. The<lb />
joy and celebration in that<lb />
locker room makes it all worth<lb />
it. The thing that I enjoyed the<lb />
most about this football game<lb />
was to watch the team come<lb />
into its own<lb />

The ECU volleyball team won<lb />
a school record eighth game in<lb />
a row sweeping conference foes<lb />
Southern Miss on Friday and<lb />
UCF" on Sunday. Playing their last<lb />
home games of the season, ECU<lb />
got Inspired play from it's leaders,<lb />
including senior Heidi Krug.<lb />
The Pirates beat Southern<lb />
Miss 3-0(30-26,30-27, and 30-16)<lb />
to put their record overall to 17-9,<lb />
and 8-4 in Conference USA play.<lb />
Mignon Dubenion led the<lb />
Pirates with 13 kills and .455<lb />
percent on her kills. Dubenion also<lb />
had four blocks. Kelley Wemert<lb />
had 12 kills, while Melissa Zentner<lb />
had 11. Trish Monroe put up 10<lb />
digs and Krug had 41 assists in the<lb />
win over Southern Miss.<lb />
Southern Miss' Mari Ruddick<lb />
had 13 kills for the night, while<lb />
Amanda Huntoon had 10. Amanda<lb />
Blunck tallied a team high eight<lb />
digs, and Kristen Metz hail 19<lb />
assists.<lb />
In the final game, the Pirates<lb />
allowed the Golden Eagles to<lb />
just .065 percent. For the night<lb />
the Pirates hit .615 percent. The<lb />
Pirates had 51 kills on the evening,<lb />
while Southern Miss had 46.<lb />
Sunday afternoon's match was<lb />
against the UCF Golden Knights.<lb />
FXU won convincingly, sweep-<lb />
ing the match 3-0 (30-24, 30-12,<lb />
and 30-21). In the first game, the<lb />
Pirates had 18 kills to UCF's 12.<lb />
ECU jumped out to a<lb />
commanding lead in the second<lb />
game. They hit Hi unanswered<lb />
points before the Golden Knights<lb />
could put up one. Peyton Thomp-<lb />
son, Holly Paton and Katie Prast<lb />
all served an ace during the match,<lb />
while l'rast's was a game winner.<lb />
ECU held UCF' to 125 percent for<lb />
kills in the second game.<lb />
"Since rally score began I've<lb />
never seen 16-0 ECU Head Coach<lb />
Chris Rushing said. "It made it<lb />
extremely easy to win that game<lb />
because with the way we could side<lb />
out and it was a good chance for us<lb />
to slip in a few players that don't<lb />
normally get much playing time.<lb />
So that next year they will have<lb />
had more experience<lb />
ECU won the third game in<lb />
a close match, 30-21. UCF's 10<lb />
errors allowed the Pirates to take<lb />
helm of the game. The Pirates<lb />
managed to get 16 kills and kept<lb />
UCF to only 13, which was UCF's<lb />
most kills in a game for the day.<lb />

TOMMY GRAHAM<lb />
SPORTS WRITER<lb />
In sports, all coaches like<lb />
to finish strong and make a<lb />
statement. The ECU women's<lb />
soccer team did that and more<lb />
this past weekend by winning two<lb />
games and clinching a spot in the<lb />
Conference USA tournament.<lb />
ECU beat UTEP 2-0 on Friday<lb />
afternoon and Colorado College<lb />
2-1 on Sunday.<lb />
The Pirates, who have<lb />
struggled offensively at times, did<lb />
not waste time attacking against<lb />
UTEP. The Miners (15-5-0,6-3-0<lb />
Conference USA) relinquished four<lb />
Pirates' shots in the first seven<lb />
minutes of the game.<lb />
Freshman Amy Szilard<lb />
scored her sixth goal in as many<lb />
games past UTEP goalkeeper<lb />
Jessica Salvi. Senior Tara Shaw<lb />
recorded her fifth goal of the<lb />
year in the 34th minute as the<lb />
Pirates out shot UTEP 15-5 in<lb />
the match. Sophomore Amber<lb />
Campbell recorded her seventh<lb />
shutout, which tied the school<lb />
record set by Amy Horton<lb />
in 1999.<lb />
The Pirates followed up with a<lb />
2-1 win against Colorado College<lb />
on Senior Day. Tara Shaw, Rachel<lb />
Hits. Mary Puckett were honored<lb />
before their last regular season<lb />
match. Madison Keller scored two<lb />
goals and Amy Szilard almost<lb />
added two more, but they wound<lb />
up going just above the crossbar.<lb />
With the wins, FXU quali-<lb />
fied for the C-USA tournament,<lb />
earning the sixth seed. The women<lb />
will take on No. 3 seed Memphis<lb />
on Wednesday at 9 p.m.<lb />
The Pirates and Tigers<lb />
played to a 1-1 double overtime<lb />
tie in Memphis.<lb />
TThe conference tourna-<lb />
ment is what we shoot for said<lb />
ECU Head Coach Rob Donnen-<lb />

but it's going to be a battle<lb />
The women will have to eye<lb />
Shoko Mikanii, who led the league<lb /><lb />
UTEP's Leslie Platz and ECU's Sarah Kirkley battle for a ball during<lb />
ECU's 2-0 win. Kirkley recorded an assist when Amy Szilard scored.<lb />
in both points (32) and points per<lb />
game this year (1.78), as well as<lb />
Kylie Hayes who was fourth in<lb />
points (28) and second in points<lb />
per ga'me (1.56).<lb />
Senior Rachel Hils was injured<lb />
again in the game on Friday<lb />
against UTEP, however Coach<lb />
Donnenwirth expects her to play<lb />
this weekend. Of the team's injury<lb />
status for the tournament, Don-<lb />
nenwirth said there was "nothing<lb />
out of the ordinary<lb />
With a roster loaded full<lb />
of freshmen, Donnenwirth<lb />
shrugged off notions that his team<lb />
will he nervous.<lb />
"They're ready to go,<lb />
they know what to expect<lb />
Donnenwirth said,<lb />
ECU finished the regular<lb />
season first in C-USA in gols<lb />

average (.70). FVeshman Sarah<lb />
Kirkley finished is second in<lb />
