ECU police to begin new initiatives Board of<lb />
Trustees<lb />
Student and faculty<lb />
safety is focus<lb />
CLAYTON BAUMAN<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
The ECU Police Department is<lb />
beginning some new initiatives as<lb />
well as programs involving part-<lb />
nerships with other organizations.<lb />
The goal behind it is to enforce<lb />
student safety as well as care for<lb />
those victims of crimes in the ECU<lb />
community.<lb />
Ralph Whitehurst, adminis-<lb />
trative sergeant of the operations<lb />
division of the ECU police, has<lb />
commenced initiatives aimed at<lb />
enforcing yielding to the pedes-<lb />
trian crosswalks on campus.<lb />
According to surveys con-<lb />
ducted by the department, viola-<lb />
tions are most prevalent on Col-<lb />
lege Hill and Fountain Drive on<lb />
the interior ECU campus.<lb />
Forty-one percent of motor-<lb />
ists did not yield to pedestrians<lb />
on Fountain Drive compared with<lb />
61 percent that did not yield on<lb />
College Hill.<lb />
The department has purchased<lb />
more pedestrian crosswalk signs<lb />
that are placed in the middle of the<lb />
road to remind motorists to yield.<lb />
"This week we're starting<lb />
some type of enforcement actions<lb />
on the pedestrian crosswalks so<lb />
motorists do not injure pedestri-<lb />
ans said Whitehurst.<lb />
Penalties are still being deter-<lb />
mined, whether it be a warning<lb />
ticket or a citation.<lb />
The initiative was created by<lb />
Whitehurst and ECU Police Chief<lb />
Robert Stroud.<lb />
The department is currently<lb />
receiving funding through the jj<lb />
North Carolina Governor's High- <lb />
way Safety Program. The grants ft<lb />
received have allowed the depart<lb />
ment to purchase traffic enforce-<lb />
ment vehicles, and with funding jf<lb />
this year they hope to purchase<lb />
another.<lb />
The ECU Police Department,<lb />
according to a press release, has<lb />
also joined forces with the Office of<lb />
the Victim Advocate in an attempt<lb />
to provide better victim assistance<lb />
to the ECU community.<lb />
In the partnership, the police<lb />
department notifies Victim Advo-<lb />
cateofcases where crime victims may<lb />
be in need of crisis intervention or<lb />
different types of victim assistance.<lb />
The goal is for the ECU Police<lb />
Department to be aware of services<lb />
available to victims of serious<lb />
meets<lb />
Cars that don't yield to pedestrians and pedestrians who cross the road without looking create a dangerous situation.<lb />
crimes such as domestic assaults,<lb />
sexual assaults, rapes, robberies<lb />
and other crimes.<lb />
The Office of the Victim Advo-<lb />
cate is a 24-hour service.<lb />
According to the press release<lb />
the police department is also work-<lb />
ing to increase community involve-<lb />
ment through various programs.<lb />
These programs include the<lb />
Residence Hall Liaison Program,<lb />
Staff and Faculty Eyes, Crime<lb />
Prevention Tuesdays and Rape<lb />
Aggression Defense.<lb />
The RHLOP is a way for<lb />
residence hall occupants to have<lb />
a direct line of communication<lb />
with the police department in an<lb />
attempt to stop crime in their hall.<lb />
SAFE works likeRHLOPexcept<lb />
its focus is on other campus buildings.<lb />
Crime Prevention Tuesdays<lb />
will happen every month and<lb />
will give ECU an opportunity<lb />
to "learn about crime prevention<lb />
strategies in hopes to reduce the<lb />
possibility of becoming a victim<lb />
and raise awareness of specific<lb />
types of crimes according to the<lb />
press release.<lb />
RAD will be a self-defense<lb />
training session available to males<lb />
and females. For more informa-<lb />

About 15 percent of students meet the criteria for depression, study says.<lb />
Helping students<lb />
cope with depression<lb />
Free screenings for<lb />
students<lb />
ZACK HILL<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Depression is not uncommon<lb />
on any college campus in the<lb />
nation.<lb />
"The top five reasons students<lb />
come in to see us are depression,<lb />
anxiety, relationship issues, adjust-<lb />
ment issues and substance abuse<lb />
said Dr. Atticia McAtee, counselor<lb />
for The Center of Counseling and<lb />
Student Development.<lb />
McAtee and others from the<lb />
center reached out to those stu-<lb />
dents by participating in National<lb />
Depression Screening Day. Stu-<lb />
dents looking for a little help had<lb />
the option of taking a quick screen-<lb />
ing test upstairs in Mendenhall<lb />
Student Center from 8:30 a.m.<lb />
- 4:30 p.m or at another session<lb />
in Bate 2015 from 6-8 p.m.<lb />
After completing the test, a<lb />
counselor would tally the answers<lb />
and then talk to the student about<lb />
I<lb />
their options if the results indi-<lb />
cated they might be depressed. The<lb />
screening also checked for signs of<lb />
anxiety disorders, bipolar disor-<lb />
ders and post-traumatic stress.<lb />
A 2004 study by the Ameri-<lb />
can College Health Association<lb />
showed that about 15 percent of<lb />
college students "meet the criteria<lb />
for clinical depression The report<lb />
also said that suicide is the second<lb />
leading cause of death among col-<lb />
lege students.<lb />
This is McAtee's second year<lb />
coordinating the event, though she<lb />
said it had been going on for sev-<lb />
eral years prior to her arrival.<lb />
"It provides an opportunity<lb />
for students to talk to a counselor<lb />
not in the center McAtee said.<lb />
"It's less intimidating. They get<lb />
to see us as real people. I think<lb />
we get some people we wouldn't<lb />
have seen<lb />

(MCT) Joan Newman, a<lb />
former partner at St. Louis law<lb />
firm Thompson Coburn LLP,<lb />
remembers interviewing job<lb />
candidates on the campus of a<lb />
prestigious law school. She was<lb />
expecting to see the usual flow<lb />
of dark-suited young men and<lb />
women, but her jaw dropped when<lb />
one male candidate showed up in<lb />
shorts, a T-shirt and flip-flops.<lb />
The meeting, said Newman,<lb />
highlighted the casualness that<lb />
pervades some young lawyers'<lb />
lives and their idea of the norm,<lb />
a view that won't cut it in the law<lb />
profession.<lb />
While new graduates may<lb />
be savvy about law, they may<lb />
not have a clue about how to<lb />
dress or act in a profession that<lb />
serves high-powered, conserva-<lb />
tive clients.<lb />
They might be sporting vis-<lb />
ible tattoos, for example. Some<lb />
women don't wear hosiery or<lb />
bras, and some men don't iron<lb />
their shirts. Many have no idea<lb />
which is their bread plate or how<lb />
to make small talk.<lb />
"I watched for years as associ-<lb />
ates came and went, and as bright<lb />
and competent as they were, they<lb />
lacked social and strategic skills<lb />
Newman said. "If an associate<lb />
doesn't look and act the part, the like-<lb />
lihood of his or her success is slim<lb />
Newman said a light bulb<lb />
went off in her head'late last year<lb />
and she decided to leave her law<lb />
career to start an "associate train-<lb />
ing and development" business<lb />
teaching young lawyers every-<lb />
thing from where their water<lb />
glass goes to how to work a room<lb />
and build relationships.<lb />
And while some of Newman's<lb />
friends questioned her sanity for<lb />
leaving a lucrative career for such<lb />
an odd and risky business, she is<lb />
on to something quite big in the<lb />
legal industry.<lb />
"It's part of a growing trend<lb />
called lawyer professional devel-<lb />
opment said James Leipold,<lb />
executive director of the Wash-<lb />
ington-based National Asso-<lb />
ciation for Law Placement.<lb />
"Law firms are throwing a lot<lb />
of resources into it. Rainmaking<lb />
(the term for bringing in new<lb />
clients) is an extension of social<lb />
skills so firms want to develop<lb />
economic engines with each of<lb />
these lawyers<lb />
Law firms' interest in teach-<lb />
ing associates "soft skills" such<lb />
as etiquette, proper attire and<lb />
how to make casual conversa-<lb />
tion began about 10 years ago,<lb />
Leipold said.<lb />
But there has been much more<lb />
emphasis on these skills in the last<lb />
few years, with law firms across<lb />
the country either hiring manage-<lb />
ment-level people to be directors<lb />
of in-house lawyer professional<lb />
development or using consultants<lb />
"Most of these associates<lb />
are 25 years old and have never<lb />
worked in a job like this said<lb />
Susan Bonnell, director, training<lb />
and development at Armstrong<lb />
Teasdale LLP. "Often, you have<lb />
associates who worked really<lb />
hard in law school, but they've<lb />
never worked in the professional<lb />
world.<lb />
Board of Governors<lb />
chair is special guest<lb />
ZACK HILL<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
The ECU Board of Trustees<lb />
gathered in the Mendenhall Multi-<lb />
Purpose room on Friday, Oct. 6<lb />
to discuss issues pertaining to the<lb />
university and to welcome Jim<lb />
Phillips, chairman of the North<lb />
Carolina Board of Governors.<lb />
After convening for roll call,<lb />
the trustees voted to go into<lb />
closed session to discuss sev-<lb />
eral legal matters. The trust-<lb />
ees remained in the closed ses-<lb />
sion for just over two hours.<lb />
Upon reconvening, Chan-<lb />
cellor Ballard welcomed the<lb />
board members and extended<lb />
a special welcome to Phillips.<lb />
Ballard mentioned the great<lb />
strides the university has been<lb />
making in the area of research,<lb />
saying, "We will generate over $40<lb />
million in funded research thisyear<lb />
Strategic planning was at<lb />
the heart of Stephen Showfe-<lb />
ty's, chairman of the ECU<lb />
Board of Trustees, remarks.<lb />
"Our commitment to the<lb />
board and the entire commu-<lb />
nity is the only purpose of stra-<lb />
tegic planning. It is to have a<lb />
useful plan to identify priorities<lb />
and put our resources where are<lb />
priorities are said Showfety.<lb />
One of the highlights of the<lb />
meeting was the discussion of<lb />
the ECU Strategic Framework.<lb />
There are five keys to the frame-<lb />
work which is designed to provide<lb />
goals that the university has set<lb />
for over the next several years.<lb />
The "21st Century Educa-<lb />
tion" aspect deals with ECU's<lb />
transition into its second cen-<lb />
tury as an education institute.<lb />
"Every undergraduate is grad-<lb />
uating with the skills to be suc-<lb />
cessful Showfetysaid. "We've<lb />
always been good at that, we are<lb />
good at that, and we're improving<lb />
The second aspect is<lb />
titled, "A Region's Health<lb />
it looks at the school's grow-<lb />
ing medical components.<lb />
"We have a first class aca-<lb />
demic and health center with<lb />
three colleges, and we hope a<lb />
fourth coming soon. Most impor-<lb />
tantly, those health sciences are<lb />
devoted to the needs of North<lb />
Carolina and the under served<lb />
areas of the state Showfety said,<lb />
"Arts in Lives" makes up<lb />
the third component of the<lb />
plan and "has to do with our<lb />
world class visual and per-<lb />
forming arts said Showfety.<lb />
"This is not only about cul-<lb />
ture and the quality of lives, but<lb />
also about the economic develop-<lb />
ment Pitt County and Greenville<lb />
needs to be a center or cultural<lb />
affairs not just for the state but<lb />
the entire eastern seaboard<lb />
Showfety and the board<lb />
also hope that ECU can become<lb />
the "Leadership University<lb />
another section of the framework.<lb />
"We expect every one<lb />
of our students to be tomor-<lb />
row's leaders Showfety said.<lb />
The final branch of the frame-<lb />
work is "Prosperity in North<lb />
Carolina which reaches students<lb />
through distance education and<lb />
other methods of regional contact.<lb />
The Board of Trustees stated a goal<lb />
in a document titled, "Framework<lb />
Connection to UNC-GA Priori-<lb />
ties" to "grow external funding for<lb />
research to $100 million per year<lb />
The other highlight of the<lb />
meeting was the speech by Jim<lb />
Phillips, chair of the North<lb />
Carolina Board of Governors.<lb />
Phillips praised the lead-<lb />
ership not only at ECU,<lb />
but on the state level as well.<lb />
"There are issues on the table<lb />
now that haven't been before<lb />
said Phillips. "There's a willing-<lb />
ness to look at new ways of doing<lb />
things that need to be discussed.<lb />
It has reinvigorated the staff<lb />
and the board, and has made a<lb />
difference with the chancellors<lb />
working as a team. There's a<lb />
real sense that our leaders on the<lb />
campuses are working together<lb />
for the future of North Carolina<lb />
Phillips explained his motives<lb />
for seeking the chair position on<lb />
the Board of Governors, saying,<lb />
"The reason I ran for chair of this<lb />
board is that I wasn't confident that<lb />

Police kill man wanted in<lb />
multi-state crime spree<lb />
(AP) Florida authorities<lb />
shot and killed a man believed to<lb />
be the suspect in a string of deadly<lb />
crimes along the East Coast.<lb />
A man believed to be<lb />
William T. Ashby, 37, of Savannah,<lb />
Ga led police on a high-speed<lb />
chase in Florida.<lb />
He crashed<lb />
his vehicle Monday night, said<lb />
Chuck Mulligan, a St. Johns<lb />
County sheriff's spokesman.<lb />
When he began driving<lb />
toward officers holding a gun,<lb />
sheriff's deputies from St. Johns and<lb />
Flagler counties opened fire,<lb />
killing him, Mulligan said.<lb />
Authorities are awaiting an<lb />
autopsy before positively identify-<lb />
ing him as Ashby<lb />
Authorities were investigat-<lb />
ing his possible involvement<lb />
in the death of University of<lb />
Virginia graduate student<lb />
Elizabeth "Lizzy" Hafter, 22.<lb />
She was found dead in<lb />
Waynesboro, Va near a car<lb />
Ashby is believed to have stolen in<lb />
Effingham County, Ga.<lb />
"We are working to nail<lb />
down a timeline with other law<lb />
enforcement agencies Johnson<lb />
said. "We're looking for anything<lb />
to put the puzzle together<lb />
Ashby has been named a<lb />
person of interest in the double<lb />
homicide until he can be<lb />
conclusively linked to the murders,<lb />
Johnson said.<lb />
"We need to know if the killer<lb />
is still out there Johnson said.<lb />
BOT<lb />
continued from Al<lb />
the Board of Governors was truly<lb />
fulfilling its mission in looking<lb />
down the road at what people need<lb />
from the universities. We're begin-<lb />
ning a study to determine over 20<lb />
years what the people of North<lb />
Carolina need from the universities<lb />
and, secondly, how do we go about<lb />
providing them. Those things<lb />
ought to drive everything we do<lb />
Phillips also addressed<lb />
the nature of tuition's rise in<lb />
North Carolina, a thorn in the<lb />
side of many ECU students.<lb />
"Tuition has gone up<lb />
six and a half percent Phil-<lb />
lips said. "If you put it up on a<lb />
graph, it's an ugly picture. It's<lb />
the unpredictable nature of it.<lb />
"We can't ask campuses to<lb />
be more lean until the adminis-<lb />

lips added "The question isn't<lb />
always what's good for the uni-<lb />
versities, but what's good for the<lb />
people of North Carolina, because<lb />
that's why the universities exist<lb />
Following Phillips' remarks,<lb />

Owners of nursing home<lb />
where 35 died to be arraigned<lb />
(AP) The owners of St.<lb />
Rita's Nursing Home,<lb />
where 35 people died in<lb />
the flooding that followed<lb />
Hurricane Katrina, were sched-<lb />
uled to be arraigned Wednesday<lb />
on charges of negligent<lb />
homicide and cruelty to the infirm.<lb />
Although state Attorney<lb />
General Charles Foti had Sal-<lb />
vador Mangano and his wife,<lb />
Mabel Mangano, booked with<lb />
negligent homicide about two weeks<lb />
after the Aug. 29, 2005 storm, the<lb />
couple was only charged late<lb />
last month because a grand<lb />
jury could not convene before<lb />
that in the flooded parish.<lb />
Their attorney, James<lb />
Cobb, has said that the nursing<lb />
home never flooded before Katrina<lb />
and the Manganos worried<lb />
that an evacuation would kill<lb />
some of their elderly patients.<lb />
The judge has imposed a<lb />
gag order on the couple and<lb />
attorneys in the case.<lb />
Nicholson Eyes Sex Toy<lb />
Business<lb />
(KMTR) Ageing lothario<lb />
Jack Nicholson is considering a<lb />
career in the sex toy industry,<lb />
marketing "day-glo" dildos.<lb />
The actor donned a fake<lb />
penis for a three-in-a-bed romp<lb />
in new movie The Departed<lb />
and enjoyed the experience so<lb />
much he's encouraging viewers<lb />
to follow suit by buying their<lb />
own strap-on.<lb />
Speaking at the New York<lb />
premiere of the Martin Scors-<lb />

said, "I'm planning to market them<lb />
on the internet in day-<lb />

Although the raunchy screen<lb />
was eventually cut from the<lb />
movie, Nicholson's dildo features<lb />
in a separate scene with co-star<lb />
Matt Damon.<lb />

24 years.<lb />
Phil Pfister of Charles-<lb />

ABC News reported<lb />
"I haven't even gotten a good<lb />

who arrived in West Virginia<lb />
with the title Monday and was back at<lb />
work Tuesday.<lb />
"None of this has sunken<lb />
in yet he said. "I haven't<lb />
even gotten back on my feet. I've<lb />
got a lot of thank you's' to say<lb />
Pfister said he trained<lb />
for the competition at area gyms,<lb />
private homes and a closed<lb />
junior high school, where he<lb />
built equipment to simulate what<lb />
he had to do in competition.<lb />
Wisconsin's Bill Kazma-<lb />

Favoritism of<lb />
"The Law"<lb />
Personal preferences affect police judgment<lb />
RYAN COBEY<lb />
OPINION WRITER<lb />
"Sir, do you know how fast you were going?"<lb />
Those words were spoken twice to me since I was<lb />
granted my first taste of true freedom at the age of<lb />
sixteen. There are few things that truly startle me, but<lb />
the sight of blue lights illuminating my rear-view mirror<lb />
is almost terrifying, especially when I know I'm doing<lb />
something wrong.<lb />
I was pulled over for going 15 and 12 over the<lb />
speed limits respectively. In fact, in one of those<lb />
cases I was rushing to see a very sick family member<lb />
at the hospital. Even after explaining myself to<lb />
the officer, I received tickets on both occasions.<lb />
On the other hand, a friend of mine was pulled over<lb />
for going 85 in a 65 mile per hour zone this summer.<lb />
That same friend, in less than a month's time, was pulled<lb />
over for going 55 in a 35 mile per hour zone. After crying<lb />
and pouting for a few minutes, she was amazingly given E<lb />
just warnings on both occasions, and drove home with "<lb />
no violations or tickets under her record.<lb />
In a nation where we are all supposed to be "inno-<lb />
cent until proven guilty why is it that good looks and<lb />
charisma make some of us "innocent even when guilty?"<lb />
Perhaps you are one of these people who find it<lb />
very easy to "talk" themselves out of a ticket - and<lb />
by talking I mean pouting and throwing a tantrum<lb />
until the cop decides to give up and walk away.<lb />
But even if you are blessed with the beauty and the<lb />
charm to slither out of these situations, I'm sure<lb />
your conscience has gotten the better of you and<lb />
you've asked yourself "I wonder why he let me go?"<lb />
A police officer's job is to uphold the law. It is their<lb />
duty to make sure nobody is violating any legal issues,<lb />
and punish them if they are. In my opinion, law enforce-<lb />
ment is one of the most important jobs in our society<lb />
because it is a requirement to be as fair and objective as<lb />
possible. Unfortunately, we see warnings given to some<lb />
people for going 20 miles per hour over the speed limit,<lb />
and tickets given to others for going ten over. Where is<lb />
the objectivity in that?<lb />
The sad truth is that since the majority of police<lb />
officers are males, they're going to think like males. I<lb />
know of women who were actually bribed to give cops<lb />
their phone numbers in exchange for a simple warning<lb />
instead of a ticket. What these officers don't realize,<lb />
however, is that because this woman did not receive the<lb />
proper punishment for going 30 miles over the speed<lb />
limit, she's going to assume it is all right to speed in<lb />
the future. After all, if crying and flashing a little skin<lb />
worked one time, it can work again, right?<lb />
Perhaps next time, instead of being pulled over and<lb />
given another warning, she will have wrapped her car<lb />
around a tree. Or, even worse, spun out of control and<lb />
took a few others with her.<lb />
Let's face it, our state troopers and even city police<lb />
can be discriminatory and sexist. It is important, as a<lb />
cop, to be able to stand your ground when the tears<lb />
begin to flow, but more and more we are seeing grown<lb />
men of justice give in to the pitiful pouting of a young<lb />
woman. Frankly, it worries me greatly to know that the<lb />
next person a cop lets go with a warning for driving<lb />
at an obnoxious speed could theoretically be the same<lb />
person that totals my car.<lb />
Perhaps they should focus more on the just-<lb />
ness of our legal system at police academies instead<lb />
of attempting to perfect that arrogant strut every<lb />
officer seems to have as they walk to your window.<lb />
JUST ASK JANE<lb />
Need advice? Want answers? Just ask Jane.<lb />
Dear Jane,<lb />
My roommate's girlfriend practically lives in<lb />
our apartment. She's a nice girl, but it's as though<lb />
she forgot she has her own home. Her dog is<lb />
even living with us now! My roommate doesn't<lb />
see what the problem is, but something has to<lb />
change soon or I'm gonna go crazy!<lb />
Signed,<lb />
Frustrated Bill Payer<lb />
Dear Frustrated Bill Payer,<lb />
Your frustration is certainly understand-<lb />
able! It sounds as if, slowly, perhaps her clothes,<lb />
hairbrush and a few other things may have found<lb />
their way into the boyfriend s room, then her<lb />
physical self, and now her pet, without there<lb />
having been a talk about whether or not this<lb />
woukfbe acceptable to you andor any other<lb />
roommates that this may concern.<lb />
First of all, you may want to speak to the<lb />
roommate again. It sounds as if you may have<lb />
brought this up and gotten the brush-ofF. If you<lb />
haven't broached the subject at all, now is the<lb />
time. Don't wait another day to tell him how you<lb />
feel about his lady friend being there so much.<lb />
The longer you wait, the more comfortable they<lb />
are going to be with the new living situation and<lb />
the worse its going to be on you when you finally<lb />
do get absolutely fed up and call for a change.<lb />
It is equally your apartment and you have the<lb />
right to be satisfied being there, as does he. Tell<lb />
him how you feel, but be specific. For instance:<lb />
You don't feel as though you can sit around in<lb />
your boxers and watch the game because she's<lb />
always in and out of the apartment. Tell him:<lb />
"Dude, I need to be able to come home and chill<lb />
out and weardo whatever I want and lately I<lb />
haven't been able to because (insert name here)<lb />
is here more than she's at her own home. It's<lb />
been bothering me and I'd like you to tell her<lb />
to restrict her time here to (insert time frames<lb />
you're comfortable with) Also, the dog being<lb />
present is an important point, especially if you<lb />
didn't already have one there.<lb />
The bottom line is, this is the place you<lb />
call home, and if you can't lay your head there<lb />
comfortably, you've got a problem. I suggest a<lb />
direct approach to the roommate, away from the<lb />
girlfriend (I'm willing to bet it would really hurt<lb />
her feelings.) Reiterate that she is a "nice girl but<lb />
that this is your home and her name is not on the<lb />
lease. Tell him you'd like to see her around, just<lb />
not nearly as much, and give him a time frame<lb />
to suggest to her sans Spot.<lb />
PIRATE RANTS<lb />
Seriously, the guy my ex is talking<lb />
to drives me insane. Is he emo or is<lb />
he stupid? Hello? If you like her, do<lb />
something about it. If not, let me have<lb />
her back. I feel like I'm waiting for<lb />
nothing to happen so I can say "I told<lb />
you so I love you baby girl.<lb />
I wanted the cooler weather to set<lb />
in until today when I saw a brunette<lb />
wearing booty shorts that had the<lb />
most delicious butt I've ever seen.<lb />
Bring on the heat wave!<lb />
Dear ITCS, there's an interesting<lb />
technology called single sign-on. I<lb />
should not have to authenticate four<lb />
times with a personal P.C. to get on<lb />
taho, go to Blackboard, Onestop and<lb />
Piratemail.LDAPservers work wonders.<lb />
ECU Biomechanics Rules!<lb />
I don't see the purpose of having a<lb />
Black Student Union and an NAACP.<lb />
One defeats the purpose of the other,<lb />
and by the way, I am a black student!<lb />
To the individual that continues to set<lb />
fires Haven't you ever heard "If you<lb />
play with fire you're bound to get burnt?"<lb />
I am in the University Manor computer<lb />
lab trying to write a geology paper and<lb />
you come in with your freaking big<lb />
mouth talking as loud as you possibly<lb />
can on your cell phone so that people<lb />
might thing you're cool. News flash:<lb />
You're not. So shut up, get off<lb />
MySpace, and go away so I can finish<lb />
writing my paper! Have some stinking<lb />
consideration for other people, geeze!<lb />
Please fix the air conditioning in my<lb />
room! Maintenance has come out<lb />
four times already and it still hasn't<lb />
worked since I moved in!<lb />
If it weren't for the teaching career,<lb />
ECU wouldn't even be here! How<lb />
dare you say it is a dead-end job?<lb />
Get a clue, and don't be jealous, that<lb />
shade of green doesn't look good on<lb />
anyone.<lb />
Thanks to the guys in Croatan watching<lb />
the Price is Right on Tuesday and<lb />
Thursday! You make my day!<lb />
To the person who wrote the rant<lb />
about Oscar Meyer that ended up in<lb />
the middle of everyone's complaining:<lb />
Thank you! That seriously made my day!<lb />
I compared a picture of my dog to<lb />
a picture of rapper Mike Jones last<lb />
night. Ah, the similarities are amazing.<lb />
It's kind of funny. I am more appalled<lb />
at Greek life, not because of Mr.<lb />
Cobey's article last Thursday, but<lb />
because of the stupid comments<lb />
fraternities gave in response to it!<lb />
I wonder about the process for hiring<lb />
ECU professorsinstructors. There are<lb />
some professorsinstructors currently<lb />
providing instruction here at ECU<lb />
who have a difficult time articulating<lb />
themselves so that students are able<lb />
to accurately understand them. My<lb />
concern is what kind of education<lb />
students will receive from this lack<lb />
of quality instruction, and what is<lb />
ECU doing about it, or does ECU<lb />
even care? From a concerned student<lb />
enrolled in a course with one of these<lb />
non-articulating professors.<lb />
I know how to eliminate the downtown<lb />
discrimination problem, don't go<lb />
Solved it fast huh?<lb />
To the two girls who were calling<lb />
me lazy and such because I drive to<lb />
the commuter lot, and then bike to<lb />
campus (instead of biking from home<lb />
I guess?) Maybe I don't live close<lb />
enough to bike from home, but at<lb />
least I'm getting some exercise biking<lb />
to class, unlike you who waddles<lb />
your fat butt to the bus everyday.<lb />
Departments are in need of work-<lb />
study students, but ECU didn't give<lb />
out work-study to a lot of people,<lb />
particularly people who had it last<lb />
year. Now I have no money. Idiots.<lb />
Sarah Bell<lb />
Editor in Chief<lb />
Just when I thought I was<lb />
understanding girls I go to the REC<lb />
center and see over half of them<lb />
wearing makeup. Why?<lb />
If someone catches something on<lb />
fire in the building I'm having class<lb />
in I would appreciate it if you would<lb />
evacuate us. You know, pull an alarm<lb />
or something. You would be surprised<lb />
how quickly a fire can spread.<lb />
The person who said that Pirate Rants<lb />
is not a dating service makes a good<lb />
point. There should be one though:<lb />
Pirate Love. So you can post, "To the<lb />
guy that sits behind me in blah-blah<lb />
who always blah-blah: You're hot!<lb />
What's up? Can I get some of that?"<lb />
But I guess that's the coward's way.<lb />
I eat off campus more than I eat on<lb />
campus now. So, I am eating better food<lb />
at a cheaper rate. Gotta love WalMart!<lb />
To the ranter that down talked<lb />
teachers: I love the fact that my<lb />
job will not only reward me with<lb />
money, but with a satisfaction in<lb />
life. I will be satisfied when I go to<lb />
sleep every night, because I would<lb />
have affected someone's life for the<lb />
better. Maybe you consider that to<lb />
be a dead-end job, but I consider it<lb />
to be an extremely satisfying career!<lb />
Get off it!<lb />
Instead of blaming your failing grades<lb />
on your foreign professors, why don't<lb />
you just get a tutor or try learning it<lb />
from the textbook?<lb />
Is it bad that I drink beer out of my<lb />
ECU Crime Prevention cup?<lb />
I can't believe TEC would bash<lb />
fraternities in the way they did just<lb />
because you don't agree with our way<lb />
of life! Yeah we drink, and we like girls!<lb />
Is that not American? What's next? Are<lb />
you gonna bash Christians because<lb />
they read the bible and go to church?<lb />
Does your chain hang low?<lb />
Why did I wait until the last weekend to<lb />
read over 200 pages for a history test?<lb />
Chivalry is not dead. Me and a friend<lb />
of mine still uphold it and get along<lb />
great with the girls.<lb />
If you're gonna park over by Fourth<lb />
and Fifth Streets for class, at least be<lb />
courteous and park in the lines.<lb />
Would you like some lemon for that<lb />
Haterade?<lb />
Not all sorority girls date frat guys. I<lb />
am in a sorority and I haven't found<lb />
a frat guy worth dating. In fact, I<lb />
totally go against the stereotype. I<lb />
would rather meet a guy at the library<lb />
instead of at a social.<lb />
I just saw a girl run into a tree! All I<lb />
have to say about that is Hahaha!<lb />
So how can I be the "perfect girl" if you<lb />
still just want to be friends? I don't get it.<lb />
I agree, the pink soap in the bathroom<lb />
sucks plus I'm not really sure if it<lb />
even cleans your hands.<lb />
To the idiot who thinks that every<lb />
organization on campus is either<lb />
black or white: You really must 6e<lb />
blind. Perhaps you should take some<lb />
time to reexamine the student body<lb />
or consult your student activities<lb />
bulletin. Why don't you attend a<lb />
SALSA meeting or an ASA meeting<lb />
and tell me what you see. Ah, ding!<lb />
Hispanics and Asians, now aren't<lb />
you smart?<lb />
Ever wonder why the rants are so<lb />
popular? I'd say they fit the short<lb />
attention span of most students.<lb />
My boyfriend and I have been together<lb />
for almost two years, and we don't<lb />
sleep together. This doesn't mean we<lb />
don't love each other, it just means<lb />
we have more self-control than 90<lb />
percent of the population.<lb />
Why do people hate on ghetto girls?<lb />
I don't look ghetto but I'm totally<lb />
ghetto inside. And why have people<lb />
been laughing at my friend this week<lb />
for wearing her herringbone? Don't<lb />
act like you don't have one or didn't<lb />
wear one in middle school.<lb />
Guys who runran cross-country have<lb />
great abs.<lb />
I would just like to thank all the<lb />
fabulous workers in West Dining Hall.<lb />
They make the dining experience a<lb />
little better.<lb />
Why are all the doors shut in the<lb />
hallways of Bate?<lb />
How do you tell your roommate that<lb />
you lived with last year and are living<lb />
with this year that you don't want to<lb />
get an apartment with them next year?<lb />
To the loudmouth UNC fan, you<lb />
proved why so many people hate UNC<lb />
because they are ignorant snobs. At<lb />
least Duke fans pull for ECU too and<lb />
don't dis this school.<lb />
Whoever set the fires in Brewster<lb />
and Joyner East, what an idiot! You<lb />
could have at least had a plan to<lb />
strategically get everyone out of a<lb />
class! You must need a hug.<lb />
Attendance policies: What is the<lb />
point? If I choose to stay in my bed<lb />
for an hour longer and miss a class,<lb />
should anyone other than myself<lb />
care? I say no.<lb />
Girls that like metal are hot!<lb />
Students: Stay for the football game<lb />
Saturday! This one is bigger than<lb />
any game we have played so far. If<lb />
we can beat Tulsa who blew us out<lb />
last year, our bowl game picture<lb />
goes from distant to likely! Show<lb />
up and be loud when the reigning<lb />
conference champions and Liberty<lb />
Bowl Champions come to Greenville!<lb />
Damnit! I hate tape!<lb />
I just turned 20, but I feel like I am 14.<lb />
Why couldn't the Stanley Cup have<lb />
come to campus on a Tuesday so we<lb />
could take it to mug night?<lb />
My roommate sits in the room all day.<lb />
Get a life. Don't you have anything to<lb />
do all day besides study?<lb />
I think that my accounting professor<lb />
is an android. She really reminds me<lb />
of Data from Star Trek.<lb />
If only there was a rulebook on girlguy<lb />
interaction. Maybe Jane could write it.<lb />
Has anyone heard about the hyphy<lb />
movement that's making its way<lb />
through Greenville?<lb />
I figured it out I never liked you for<lb />
you. I liked you because you liked me.<lb />
Ode to Skip Holtz: Skip, you are, our<lb />
leader for sure. With you, football is<lb />
no longer a bore. Please don't ever go<lb />
away. But one more thing I must ask<lb />
of you, crush the wolfpuppies of N.C<lb />
State and make thern boohoo!<lb />
Does anyone else ever read the pirate<lb />
rants and get paranoid because you<lb />
think some of them are about you?<lb />
Could someone please explain what is<lb />
so enticing about consuming alcohol<lb />
until your only memory of that night<lb />
are the pictures posted on Facebook?<lb />
I love "Grey's Anatomy" so much I<lb />
delay my going out on Thursday nights<lb />
to watch it and I am a guy.<lb />
Why do people tell me I'm tall? Don't<lb />
you think I've noticed?!<lb />
If you have a problem with me, don't<lb />
put my best friend in the middle of<lb />
our situation.<lb />

New fall shows finally<lb />
worth sitting through<lb />
JESSE PENCE<lb />
OPINIONS WRITER<lb />
I watch TV. I watch a lot of TV. I wouldn't<lb />
say it's more than any other college student<lb />
with a DVR may watch, but it's a substan-<lb />
tial amount. Previously it used to be that I<lb />
would just record each episode of "Law and<lb />
Order: SVU" because all shows were more<lb />
or less the same.<lb />
You had your crime shows- "Law and<lb />
Order "Law and Order: SVU "Law and<lb />
Order: Criminal Intent Then you got into<lb />
"America's most watched drama or whatever<lb />
CBS liked to call "CSI which brought spin-<lb />
offs from just about every city you can think<lb />
of- "CSI: Miami "CSI: New York I could<lb />
have sworn I saw CSI: Omaha once or twice.<lb />
Then you got into the medical shows<lb />
- "House "Grey's Anatomy plus the occa-<lb />
sional "ER sprinkled with a little "Chicago<lb />
Hope It's as if one guy wrote a show and<lb />
submitted it to every studio in Hollywood.<lb />
Unfortunately, they all bought it.<lb />
I was wonderfully surprised when I saw<lb />
some of the new shows for this fall. I person-<lb />
ally was glad to see Matthew Perry, Chan-<lb />
dler from "Friends back on TV in the new<lb />
NBC drama "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip<lb />
It's about the goings on in the studio of a<lb />
sketch comedy show not unlike NBC's "Sat-<lb />
urday Night Live I enjoyed the premiere,<lb />
but it wasn't quite what I was looking for.<lb />
Luckily for me, along came "30 Rock the<lb />
comedy equivalent to "Studio 60 It's writ-<lb />
ten and produced by Tina Fey, who wrote<lb />
for, and resurrected, "SNL The premiere is<lb />
Oct. 11 and it's one show my DVR is already<lb />
set to record.<lb />
Now to my personal new favorite of the<lb />
fall season<lb />
"Smith" is a show about a gang of high-end<lb />
robbers who will steal anything they are paid<lb />
to get. The elaborate means of theft and high<lb />
drama between lead character Bobby Stevens,<lb />
Ray Liotta and everyone else in the show<lb />
leads to one solid hour I can actually watch<lb />
without fast forwarding through any parts.<lb />
Now I am not saying that I don't still<lb />
enjoy "Law and Order I watch that, too, but<lb />
only on occasion. The returning shows this<lb />
fall have come up a little short for me thus<lb />
far. "Grey's Anatomy" seems to be the same<lb />
old thing. McDreamy is still having "beauti-<lb />
ful man" problems, too many women, and too<lb />
little time. Meanwhile, poor O'Malley can't<lb />
say, "I love you to his wonderful doting girl-<lb />
friend because he still loves Meredith Grey.<lb />
I've missed "House" this season but I<lb />
shouldn't even count FOX as being a real<lb />
player in the network television world. How-<lb />
ever, if a FOX network has to be mentioned<lb />
it may as well be FX. However, my favorite<lb />
show from the past three years, "NipTuck"<lb />
has become too weird and out there even for<lb />
me. Everything that could be messed up,<lb />
slept with, or organ harvested, has been. Did<lb />
I mention it is also a "doctor" show?<lb />
There are many other shows still on<lb />
from past seasons, and of course new shows<lb />
I failed to mention, and if none of the new<lb />
shows do it for you, and you're just bored<lb />
with the same old drama on network TV,<lb />
well then, I guess you could always watch<lb />
"Dancing with the Stars<lb />
Letters To The Editor<lb />
I choose not to participate in the debates<lb />
between the Greeks and non-Greeks on-<lb />
campus. I can choose no side in this "conflict"<lb />
that plays itself out within the pages of the<lb />
East Carolinian. I cannot choose a side for a<lb />
variety of reasons. I know people that are in<lb />
the Greek community that I get along with,<lb />
some I'm even friends with, and I am friends<lb />
with some of those that stand opposite of the<lb />
fraternities and sororities. However, the main<lb />
reason I choose not to get involved with this<lb />
issue is that it's not realty an issue at all.<lb />
Through the Pirate Rants the student body<lb />
has created a conflict that appears to have inter-<lb />
national implications. However, we have become<lb />
so self-involved with our pathetic social differ-<lb />
ences that we have come to ignore real world<lb />
issues such as the events unfolding in Africa.<lb />
In Darfur, Sudan, there have Deen over<lb />
400,000 people murdered and over two million<lb />
forcibly removed from their homes within the<lb />
last three years. This does not even take into<lb />
account that the average "Janjaweed" soldier<lb />
commits rape 10 times per day.Yet, most of the<lb />
people in our country have no idea of die situa-<lb />
tion occurring in Sudan. But, I guess the choice<lb />
of fraternity or not is much more important<lb />
and can have a much more global impact than<lb />
the deaths and rape of thousands of people.<lb />

Breast Cancer awareness month<lb />
Informing women all over<lb />
the nation about how to<lb />
detect breast cancer<lb />
STACY DAIL<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
If you've gone anywhere this<lb />
month, it is very likely that you've<lb />
seen everyday items, such as<lb />
clothes, jewelry and even kitchen<lb />
mixers, embeilished with little<lb />
pink ribbons.<lb />
This new array of pink is<lb />
because October is National Breast<lb />
Cancer Awareness month, and pro-<lb />
ceeds from these products help to<lb />
fund campaigns hoping to inform<lb />
women about early detection of<lb />
breast cancer.<lb />
This month has been nationally<lb />
recognized by many organizations,<lb />
and has encouraged them to orga-<lb />
nize fund-raisers and other activi-<lb />
ties to help raise money to fight,<lb />
detect, treat and cure this cancer<lb />
that is the second leading cause<lb />
of cancer death among women.<lb />
In 1960, one out of every 20<lb />
women was diagnosed with breast<lb />
cancer during their lifetime. That<lb />
ratio has shockingly taken a turn<lb />
for the worse compared to today,<lb />
where one out of seven develop this<lb />
deadly disease.<lb />
Although breast cancer aware-<lb />
ness is encouraged throughout the<lb />
year, October is used to step it up<lb />
a notch and really educate women<lb />
about breast cancer, its symptoms<lb />
and how to help prevent it.<lb />
Many clinics offer free screen-<lb />
ings during the month, and women<lb />
of all ages are encouraged to take<lb />
advantage of the opportunity.<lb />
National Breast Cancer Aware-<lb />
ness Month was first started in<lb />
1985, and took place only during<lb />
the first week of October.<lb />
Throughout the week, mem-<lb />
bers from the American Academy<lb />
of Family Physicians and Cancer<lb />
Care, Inc. gave out brochures,<lb />
Pink ribbon items to raise money for breast cancer can be purchased year-round but October is a great time to buy.<lb />
talked to news reporters and even<lb />
went to the U.S. Congressional<lb />
committee to discuss the serious<lb />
need for easy access to mammo-<lb />
grams.<lb />
This got the attention of then<lb />
first lady Betty Ford, who was<lb />
a breast cancer survivor. She<lb />
teamed up with her daughter<lb />
Susan to talk on national televi-<lb />
sion about the importance of breast<lb />
cancer screening. Their appear-<lb />
ance affected many people, and<lb />
soon public officials, community<lb />
leaders and the media, as well as<lb />
everyday people, started to show<lb />
interest in the cause.<lb />
That interest has continued<lb />
to grow, and this program has<lb />
continued to make more and more<lb />
of an impact in the lives of women.<lb />
This year NCBAM wants to focus<lb />
on getting women to really take<lb />
control of their breast health and<lb />
to make sure that they are educated<lb />
about how to give themselves reg-<lb />
ular self-breast exams, in addition<lb />
to annual mammograms.<lb />
Our community is doing many<lb />
things to support NCBAM, but<lb />
students are always encouraged<lb />
to get involved and do more. Stu-<lb />
dents who are interested in help-<lb />
ing women become more aware of<lb />
ways to detect breast cancer and<lb />
those who want to help friends and<lb />
family who are battling the disease<lb />
can visit ncbam.com.<lb />
During this month, remember<lb />
not only the survivors and fight-<lb />
ers ofbreast cancer, but also their<lb />
friends and family who continue<lb />
to give them love and support and<lb />
maybe even a sense of hope for<lb />
the future.<lb />

When walking into the<lb />
Dowdy-Ficklen stadium for a<lb />
home football game, the stands<lb />
rumble with the energy of the<lb />
crowd, the canon blasts off and<lb />
of course, the marching band<lb />
is there to supply music and<lb />
entertainment. As the dominant<lb />
spirit organization on campus,<lb />
the marching band performs<lb />
for over 300,000 fans each year.<lb />
Kraig Winston, a junior hospi-<lb />
tality management major, is a<lb />
member of the ECU marching<lb />
band's Color Guard.<lb />
EC: What made you decide to be<lb />
part of the marching band?<lb />
Winston: It's a blast. Per-<lb />
forming gives you such a rush<lb />
sometimes. I have also met so<lb />
many friends through it.<lb />
EC: What do you like most about<lb />
the Color Guard?<lb />
Winston: Everyone sees if you<lb />
don't do the work. So I guess<lb />
Color Guard pushes me to try<lb />
harder, and because of it, per-<lb />
forming is so much more fun. I<lb />
can be proud of the work I have<lb />
done.<lb />
EC: How do you feel being a<lb />
male among a majority of female<lb />

Winston: There are three other<lb />

Scores Pool Hall & Bar<lb />
A quality place to hang out in<lb />
Greenville<lb />
AARON BORREGO<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
I recently went downtown in the pursuit of a good<lb />
time. I was met with long lines and an endless number<lb />
of shady people in the few places I went. This was when<lb />
I decided to go to Scores Pool Hall and Bar.<lb />
Not many people were there, which made the<lb />
place seem kind of empty given the size of the bar. An<lb />
extremely friendly female bartender greeted me and<lb />
proceeded to tell me about their drink specials and<lb />
pool table rates.<lb />
I understand this is her job, but she did this without<lb />
me asking her to, and she did it with a genuine smile.<lb />
I began to notice that the place had changed quite a<lb />
bit since the last time I was there.<lb />
I was also greeted by the bar owner, Mark Soko-<lb />
lovic, to whom I began talking about how much the<lb />
place had changed.<lb />
"This isn't the same place the pool tables, tables<lb />
and seats, drink rails and even the bathrooms are new<lb />
and improved said Sokolovic.<lb />
He was right, everything is new. This is mainly<lb />
due to the management change because he recently<lb />
bought the pool hall and decided to go in a new<lb />
direction with the place. That direction is to have a<lb />
safe, clean and friendly atmosphere.<lb />
That personable and intimate feel to the bar must<lb />
be a result of Sokolovic and his wife's personalities.<lb />
Sokolovic, a native of Pittsburgh, tells me that deal-<lb />
ing with people respectfully can resolve many of the<lb />
problems encountered by businesses.<lb />
Some of the more impressive things about this<lb />
bar are NFL ticket playings every single game, some<lb />
of the cleanest bathrooms I have seen downtown,<lb />
eight-foot projection screens, live music, free food<lb />
and beverages every third Wednesday for two hours<lb />

MARCHING<lb />
continued from A5<lb />
The Marching Pirates are a very important part of the football experience.<lb />
game, I had a lady come up to<lb />
me and tell me I was her favorite<lb />
out there. She said she enjoyed<lb />
watching me perform and how<lb />
I "made the game for her It<lb />
was very sweet, and it made me<lb />
realize that there are people out<lb />
there who look forward to half-<lb />
time just as much as watching<lb />
the game.<lb />
EC: Do you think the marching<lb />
band contributes to the football<lb />
game experience every weekend?<lb />
Winston: Oh yeah! We get the<lb />
fans wild and excited during<lb />
pre-game and we play music<lb />
to get them going while in<lb />
the stands. We all get excited<lb />
and playcheer loud just to get<lb />
everyone else into the game.<lb />
1 know I'm biased, but I don't<lb />
think a football games would be<lb />
nearly as much fun without the<lb />
band there.<lb />
EC: How long is your season?<lb />
Winston: As long as the football<lb />
season basically. We start rehears-<lb />
ing about mid-August. We don't<lb />
stop rehearsing until after the<lb />
last game. We only continue then<lb />
if we are going to a bowl game.<lb />
Our last game this year is with<lb />
N.C. State on Nov. 25. So the<lb />
season will last about four months.<lb />
EC: How much earlier do you<lb />
have to come to ECU before the<lb />
fall semester actually begins?<lb />
Winston: Usually about a week.<lb />
Band camp started on the Aug.<lb />
17 this year.<lb />
The ECU marching band<lb />
is the backbone of spirit at the<lb />
football games. Their stand music<lb />
and halftime shows keep the fans<lb />

the BMX bikers.<lb />
The City of Greenv ille created<lb />
their own skate park with Jaycee<lb />

Dave Mirra, who was unable<lb />
to compete in this year's X Games<lb />
due to a lacerated liver suffered<lb />
in practice, also has his own<lb />
warehouse, but the location is<lb />
in Winterville. The warehouses<lb />
provide an opportunity to hone<lb />
new tricks in a private environ-<lb />
ment without fanfare or much<lb />
publicity.<lb />
Mirra, who has an X Games<lb />
record 20 medals, was recently<lb />
featured on a milk advertisement<lb />
on Evans St. He likes riding on<lb />
ECU's campus so much that he<lb />
featured a replica of Sonic Plaza<lb />
on a recent BMX video game.<lb />
In the game's sequel bearing his<lb />
name, the player can ride around<lb />
Cireenville streets, ride through<lb />
a University, and even ride in<lb />
people's back yards.<lb />
When Cireenville started to<lb />
be the place to come ride, the best<lb />
spots were in people's backyards,<lb />
but the city of Greenville made<lb />
a law to that no one could have<lb />
ramps in their yards anymore.<lb />
As nice as it is to have pro-<lb />
fessional riders like Mirra and<lb />
Nyquist, the sport's future relies<lb />
on its youth. Marcus Tooker<lb />
is a 20 year-old ECU student<lb />
from Massachusetts who when<lb />
decided to attend ECU because<lb />
of Greenville's reputation for<lb />
BMX riding. Tooker, who has<lb />
been riding for nearly a decade,<lb />
has recently been going to com-<lb />
petitions like the Mountain Dew<lb />
Sports Tour where he rides in the<lb />
street competition.<lb />
"I feel like traveling is huge<lb />
said Tooker. "Biking has opened<lb />
up my life. It's so easy to make<lb />

looker's favorite trick is the<lb />
360-degree tail whip to bar spin,<lb />

flip and tail whip. He learned<lb />
the tricks at Nyquist's The Unit,<lb />
which has a foam pit to try big<lb />
tricks into before attempting<lb />
them on concrete.<lb />
Another ECU student that<lb />
rides is Terrell Gordy, who's been<lb />
riding for his whole life. Gordy<lb />
refers to riding as his stress<lb />
release. His influences for riding<lb />
are his friends, who are always<lb />
pushing him to do a trick and do<lb />
it better than last time, and the<lb />
professionals that live around<lb />
Greenville.<lb />
"Dave and Ryan, they're<lb />

following an 8-20 season in<lb />
his first year at the helm of the<lb />
ECU basketball program, Ricky<lb />
Stokes parted ways with eight<lb />
of the 12 players on the 2005<lb />
roster. With only four returning<lb />
players, Stokes said his second<lb />
season as the head coach of the<lb />
Pirates will come with a lot of<lb />
'accelerated teaching<lb />
"We do have four guys<lb />
back that played a lot of<lb />
basketball for us said Stokes, "and a lot<lb />
of new faces, a new energy, so to seak<lb />

squad with seven freshmen.<lb />
"It's been a lot of teaching<lb />
Stokes said of the summer work-<lb />
outs. "We have not done a lot of<lb />
5-on-5. That will be when we<lb />
start here this Eriday. They will<lb />
have an opportunity, but I've been<lb />
impressed with all the new faces.<lb />
Our core freshmen are playing<lb />
extremely well and are excited to<lb />
be here, and I think they'll add a<lb />
lot to our team<lb />
5 The Pirates begin practice<lb />
Eriday, with walk-on tryouts to<lb />
,be held a week from Thursday.<lb />
Stokes is hoping the new faces will<lb />
help the basketball program "take<lb />
a step forward<lb />
The seven freshmen include<lb />
6-foot-10 Justin Ramsey and<lb />
former Apex track star James<lb />
Dillard. Stokes said Dillard's<lb />
athleticism has impressed him<lb />
the most.<lb />
"He's also a basketball player<lb />
that happened to play track said<lb />
Stokes. "One thing that he pro-<lb />
vides is that size, which we didn't<lb />
have a lot of guys in that range.<lb />
We think he can use his athletic<lb />
ability as a defender against the<lb />
bigger guards<lb />
Corey Rouse graduated and<lb />
Mike Castro has used up his eli-<lb />
gibility. Those were the only two<lb />
seniors on last year's squad. The<lb />
other six decided to transfer to<lb />
other schools, a decision Stokes<lb />
said was not made by him.<lb />
It was an individual deci-<lb />
sion by each player at the end of<lb />
the year Stokes said, who was<lb />
hired by Terry Holland from<lb />
South Carolina in 2005. "We were<lb />
trying to have the best fit for each<lb />
individual person and in a lot of<lb />
different instances, a lot of kids<lb />
wanted to play in different places.<lb />
Whether it's more minutes or not<lb />
on board with the commitment<lb />
that we're looking for, it was not<lb />
my decision. It was a decision that<lb />
we have at the end of the year with<lb />
each individual to sit down and see<lb />
what's best for them<lb />
The Pirates have just one<lb />
senior and Stokes will look to the<lb />
aptly named Captain, and the other<lb />
returnees, to provide leadership to<lb />
the young team.<lb />
"I expect all the four return-<lb />
ing guys to share the load as far<lb />
as responsibility said Stokes.<lb />
"Courtney Captain has played at<lb />
some point guard position, but<lb />
hopefully we'll let him play the<lb />
off-guard, which I think he's the<lb />
most comfortable playing<lb />
Darrell Jenkins, one of two<lb />
junior transfers, is the front-runner<lb />
to play the point, but the Pirates<lb />
still don't have a true point guard.<lb />
"Darrell Jenkins has played<lb />
point guard said Stokes. "He's<lb />
a junior college transfer from<lb />
Southern Idaho that has played<lb />
the position. Naturally, he's the<lb />
guy who can push the basketball.<lb />
I think he makes the game easy,<lb />
makes the easy play and really<lb />
distributes the basketball<lb />
Stokes added that the job is<lb />
not Jenkins' yet with Captain<lb />
and a couple of others likely to<lb />
get looks.<lb />
"Brandon Evans will have an<lb />
opportunity to play there said<lb />
Stokes "He's a freshman, and also<lb />
Cory Earmer, a junior college guy<lb />
at Tallahassee who could slide<lb />
over to that<lb />
Ingram, a junior from Kinston, is<lb />
recovering from his fourth knee sur-<lb />

on a full recovery and a big season<lb />
from the Wake Forest transfer.<lb />
"1 think this rehab is old hat for<lb />
him, but we're gonna look forward<lb />
to his leadership said Stokes.<lb />

ahead with the teaching and put-<lb />
ting stuff in this year, our second<lb />
year<lb />
Stokes is starting to put his<lb />
stamp on the program, and has<lb />
done so by changing the attitude<lb />
of the program, and building<lb />
camaraderie with the players.<lb />
"I think this is a closer team<lb />
said Stokes. "We made some<lb />
changes. We've moved everybody<lb />
on campus, we have mandatory<lb />
breakfast checks. We've done a<lb />
lot in the preseason that has chal-<lb />
lenged the kids. Hopefully their<lb />
chemistry, by spendinga lot of time<lb />
together, will show on the court<lb />
With Ramsey joined by<lb />
6-foot-10, 255-pound fellow<lb />
freshman Chad Wynn and 6-<lb />
foot-9 frosh John Fields, Stokes<lb />
feels his team has the size it's<lb />
been lacking. That size will be<lb />
needed to replace the rebounding<lb />
productivity lost with the gradu-<lb />
ation of Rouse.<lb />
"I don't think any one guy can<lb />
replace a guy like Corey Rouse said<lb />
Stokes, "especially the year that he<lb />
had last year, but I think collectively,<lb />
hopefully we can get the job done<lb />

Deadline for Applications due Friday, October 20 at 5p.m.<lb />
(AP) N.C. State's<lb />
depleted frontcourt just got a<lb />
little thinner.<lb />
Andrew Brackman, a 6-<lb />
foot-10 junior who is a pitcher<lb />
for the baseball team, said<lb />
Tuesday he plans to sit out the<lb />
basketball season to focus on<lb />
baseball in hopes of improv-<lb />
ing his chances of being a high<lb />
draft pick next summer.<lb />
The announcement made<lb />
official what many had expected<lb />
for weeks and leaves the Wolf-<lb />
pack without one of its top<lb />
returning players on a front line<lb />
that lost Cedric Simmons to the<lb />
NBA draft.<lb />
"Playing professional base-<lb />
ball has been a big dream of<lb />
mine ever since I was a little<lb />
kid and that dream has a chance<lb />
of coming true in June Brack-<lb />
man said in a written statement.<lb />
"Because of that 1 feel that the<lb />
most important thing for me<lb />
is to be as prepared mentally<lb />
and physically as possible for<lb />
the draft<lb />
The news came during the<lb />
Wolfpack's annual preseason<lb />
media day, which was the<lb />
first for coach Sidney Lowe<lb />
since he was hired to lead his<lb />
alma mater in May. Brackman,<lb />
who did not attend the event,<lb />
issued his statement through<lb />
the university.<lb />
Brackman said he would<lb />
reconsider whether to play<lb />
basketball after the profes-<lb />
sional baseball draft in June,<lb />
though Lowe wouldn't rule out<lb />
Brackman playing basketball<lb />
this season.<lb />
"The door is always open<lb />
Lowe said. "1 wouldn't close it on<lb />
him. He's one of our kids. He's<lb />
part of our family. He's been on<lb />
the team before. I'm just not one<lb />
to close the door on family. He's<lb />
always welcome. The players feel<lb />
the same way<lb />
Last baseball season, Brack-<lb />
man was 1-3 with a 6.85 ERA<lb />
before a stress fracture in his left<lb />
hip ended his year. The injury<lb />
healed in time for Uim to pitch<lb />
in international competition for<lb />
Team USA. He was 4-0 in seven<lb />
starts with a 2.09 ERA in his<lb />
freshman year.<lb />
"I look at this basketball<lb />
season as a redshirt year for me<lb />
Brackman said. "My primary<lb />
focus will be on playing baseball<lb />
but 1 still consider myself part of<lb />
the basketball program<lb />
It's easy to understand why<lb />
Lowe would hold out hope for<lb />
Brackman to change his mind.<lb />
He averaged 7.6 points per game<lb />
while ranking second on the team<lb />
with 28 blocked shots for the<lb />
Wolfpack last year.<lb />
Brackman figured to see<lb />
significant minutes this season<lb />
after last year's 22-10 team<lb />
lost Simmons, who left school<lb />
after his sophomore season,<lb />
and fifth-year senior forward<lb />
llian Evtimov.<lb />
That leaves the Wolfpack with<lb />
one experienced frontcourt player:<lb />
6-8 sophomore Ben McCauley,<lb />
who averaged 2.1 points and 6.9<lb />
minutes in 27 games.<lb />
"I think the window might<lb />
still be cracked McCauley said.<lb />
"I think we all want to stay posi-<lb />
tive toward that idea. I talked to<lb />
Andrew many times during the<lb />
week. He still says he's confused<lb />
about it.<lb />
"He's got a really difficult<lb />
decision to make. I've told him<lb />
many times that whatever deci-<lb />
sion he makes, I'm behind him<lb />
100 percent<lb />
The other front line players<lb />
include 6-8 redshirt freshman<lb />
Brandon Costner, who played<lb />
just five games because of a<lb />
stress fracture in his leg, and<lb />
7-3, 245-pound freshman Bar-<lb />
tosz Lewandowski. The losses<lb />
could even force 6-7 swingman<lb />
Gavin Grant to spend time<lb />
inside, which could leave the<lb />
Wolfpack short-handed against<lb />
bigger teams.<lb />
Still, his teammates sound<lb />
OK with Brackman') decision<lb />
- even if they'd love to have him<lb />
on the court.<lb />
"We could definitely use him<lb />
for a couple of Duke and Carolina<lb />
games Grant said.<lb /><lb />
