Fans pack Hendrix Theater<lb />

Ben Murchison, Dennis Fryer, Nick Markowkin, Mike Markowkin and Meredith Meares pose with the Cup<lb />
Cup carries with it<lb />
history and stories<lb />
RON CLEMENTS<lb />
SENIOR WRITKR<lb />
The Stanley Cup was unveiled to<lb />
hundreds of hockey fans who filled<lb />
Hendrix Theater Monday afternoon.<lb />
The Cup, won by the Carolina<lb />
Hurricanes, was in Greenville on<lb />
the third day of a four-day state<lb />
tour to bring the oldest trophy in<lb />
North American sports to the fans.<lb />
"The team is called the Caro-<lb />
lina Hurricanes for a reason said<lb />
Kyle Hanlin, the manager of media<lb />
relations for the 'Canes. "We want<lb />
everybody in the state to feel like<lb />
part of this team. Winning the<lb />
championship and a trophy like the<lb />
Stanley Cup, we want to be able to<lb />
share that with everybody across<lb />
the state<lb />
From Raleigh, team represen-<lb />
tatives accompanied the Cup, and<lb />
its handler Mike Bolt, to Charlotte,<lb />
Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Bur-<lb />
lington and Rocky Mount before<lb />
they came to Greenville. The Cup<lb />
was at Pitt County Memorial Hos-<lb />
pital earlier in the day before leav-<lb />
ing for Goldsboro Monday night.<lb />
Today, the famous Cup will be in<lb />
Fayetteville to visit the soldiers at<lb />
Fort Bragg.<lb />
Traveling is nothing new to<lb />
Lord Stanley's Cup, originally<lb />
awarded in 1893 when the Mon-<lb />
treal Amateur Athletic Associa-<lb />
tion hockey club won the Amateur<lb />
Hockey Association of Canada.<lb />
With several NHL players<lb />
from nations not on this continent<lb />
and each winning team member<lb />
allowed an overnight visit with the<lb />
Clip, it has been all over the world<lb />
as some players take it home. Bolt,<lb />
who has been the Cup's handler for<lb />
seven years, said he has seen some<lb />
strange things.<lb />
"I've seen a couple guys take<lb />
it to the top of a mountain for a<lb />
photo op said Bolt, who is in his<lb />
11th year working for the Hockey<lb />
Hall of Fame in Toronto, where<lb />
the Cup is housed. "Guys take it on<lb />
their Harleys. Guys take it fishing,<lb />
where they put the bait right in the<lb />
bowl. It's a bowl, it's a cup and they<lb />
want to put stuff in it<lb />
From fishing bait to beer to ice<lb />
cream to cereal to lobster bisque,<lb />
the Cup has seen it all and Monday<lb />
afternoon was no different as one<lb />
couple asked if they could place<lb />
their two-month old daughter<lb />
inside the Cup for a picture.<lb />
One of Bolt's favorite stories<lb />
involves children, too.<lb />
"Marty Brodeur took it to the<lb />
movies with his kids Bolt said<lb />
of the New Jersey Devils goalie's<lb />
2000 visit with the Cup. "The<lb />
kids took the Cup in and put it in<lb />
a seat, pouied their popcorn in<lb />
the Stanley Cup and ate popcorn<lb />
out of the Stanley Cup while they<lb />
watched a movie<lb />
With all that food, or whatever<lb />
else players can think of to put<lb />
into hockey's Holy Grail, it has<lb />
to be cleaned - a task Bolt said he<lb />

Flu Season generally begins in the fall months,<lb />
arriving as early as October and lasting sometimes<lb />
as late at May. For this reason, most health care pro-<lb />
viders begin administering flu vaccinations within<lb />
the months of October and November. However, it<lb />
is not too late to get vaccinations in December and<lb />
the winter months.<lb />
Although shortages of the vaccination have been<lb />
occurred over the past few years, last year the SHS<lb />
has administered roughly 1,500 vaccinations. Last<lb />
year, BCBSNC administered over 163,000 shots and<lb />
expects to surpass that this year.<lb />
According to the Center for Disease Control and<lb />
Prevention, nearly 200,000 people are hospitalized each<lb />
year with the flu and 86,000 die from the flu annually.<lb />
Vaccinations are up to 90percent effective in preventing<lb />
the flu and pan prevent more serious conditions caused<lb />
by the flu such as pneumonia and dehydration.<lb />

Hannah Allam spoke to students and faculty members in Mendenhall.<lb />
Award-winning reporter<lb />
shares experiences in Iraq<lb />
A story of kidnappings,<lb />
murders and hope<lb />
BENJAMIN CORMACK<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
ECU's school of communi-<lb />
cation invited award-winning<lb />
reporter Hannah Allam to share<lb />
her experiences while covering<lb />
events in Iraq.<lb />
Allam, Middle East Bureau<lb />
Chief in Cairo, of McClatchy<lb />
Newspapers, spoke at Mendenhall<lb />
last Friday about life as a war<lb />
reporter, as well as living and<lb />
interacting with the people in Iraq.<lb />
Following her graduation<lb />
from the University of Oklahoma,<lb />
Allam began her coverage and<lb />
work on the Middle East follow-<lb />
ing the events of Sept. 11. As an<lb />
Egyptian-American, she felt she<lb />
could be a bridge for an entire<lb />
region with a long-standing his-<lb />
tory of neglect. She volunteered to<lb />
report in Iraq following the fall of<lb />
Saddam Hussein, during what she<lb />
called a "dangerous but optimistic<lb />
time in which the Iraqi people<lb />
themselves were "uncertain and<lb />
on edge, but optimistic<lb />
"Hannah Allam is the genuine<lb />
article said Tim Hudson, director<lb />
of the School of Communication.<lb />
"She's known for finding and<lb />
reporting stories other western<lb />
reporters can't get near. She's a<lb />
terrific role model for our journal-<lb />
ism students, but also someone<lb />
who can offer excellent perspective<lb />
to all of the rest of us about what's<lb />
going on in the Middle East<lb />
Hudson knows Allam from<lb />
when he taught journalism at<lb />
the University of Oklahoma. Bill<lb />
. Loving, media law professor, also<lb />
knew Allam from when he taught<lb />
at the University of Oklahoma.<lb />
Allam told stories of her expe-<lb />
riences where she, her friends and<lb />
colleagues faced violence from<lb />
both sides of the conflict.<lb />
Allam spoke of her friend<lb />
Ban, a colleague, reporter and<lb />
translator. While Allam and Ban<lb />
were in Egypt, Ban's family was<lb />
killed, except for her infant son,<lb />
by a group seeking to kill her<lb />
and her husband for their work<lb />
with Americans. The individuals,<lb />
discovering they had killed Ban's<lb />
mother-in-law instead of her,<lb />
issued another death threat to her.<lb />
Allam called in several favors and<lb />
managed to accomplish a plan she<lb />
described as being straight out of<lb />
a Tom Clancy novel. She was able<lb />
to get Ban and the baby out of Iraq<lb />
and into the United States under<lb />
Political Asylum.<lb />
Allam told another story<lb />
in which she and several other<lb />
reporters were kidnapped<lb />
by a group of renegade policemen<lb />
who felt they were not receiv-<lb />
ing fair press coverage. She said<lb />
she had a rifle pointed at her<lb />
stomach, and was held at gunpoint<lb />
for the press conference. During<lb />
that time, she felt relief when she<lb />
read word of their kidnapping as<lb />
it scrolled across the bottom of a<lb />
nearby television screen.<lb />
Finally, Allam spoke of the<lb />
tragic death of another friend, a<lb />
doctor who volunteered his time<lb />
as a translator and helped with<lb />
reporting, as well as offered his<lb />
medical expertise at times. While<lb />
trying to get gas so he could drive<lb />
his daughter to the pool, he got<lb />
too close to a military checkpoint<lb />
and was shot by a U.S. military<lb />
sniper. She spent extra time in Iraq<lb />
consoling her friend's widow and<lb />
working with the investigation<lb />
about the doctor's death.<lb />
"She has accomplished a lot by<lb />
a young age Hudson said, "being<lb />
a Bureau Chief for the Middle<lb />
East and the people that work<lb />
for her are seasoned Middle East<lb />
reporters, are seasoned war cor-<lb />
respondents, are seasoned political<lb />
correspondents and so forth<lb />
In describing the challenges<lb />
of being a reporter in Iraq,<lb />
Allam called it an "ethical mine-<lb />
field While she was taught to<lb />
never lie about who you are, it<lb />
could have meant death depend-<lb />
ing on where she was and who<lb />
she talked to. Many told her<lb />
that you can't tell people you are<lb />
American. People went as far as<lb />
dying their hair, and saying they<lb />
were from other countries to do<lb />
this. That's why she considered<lb />
her dual citizenship, being Egyp-<lb />
tian and American, a benefit to<lb />
her work.<lb />

Fires set in bathrooms<lb />

Investigators think the<lb />
fires were intentionally<lb />

ADELINE TRENTO<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Two fires were started on<lb />
campus last Friday afternoon<lb />
in the school of communication<lb />
building and the Brewster build-<lb />
ing. The fires, which officials<lb />
believe were started on purpose,<lb />
occurred in bathrooms of both<lb />
Joyner East and Brewster.<lb />
"The fires were definitely<lb />
started on purpose said Gary<lb />
Coggins, senior fire codes official.<lb />
"There is no way it was an<lb />
accident<lb />
Captain Lennie Waters of the<lb />
Greenville Fire Department said<lb />
the fire in Brewster occurred in<lb />
the men's bathroom on the first<lb />
floor cf the D wing. The fire was<lb />
started when someone lit a gar-<lb />
bage can full of paper towels on<lb />
fire. Officials believe it was pur-<lb />
poseful because burnt paper towels<lb />
were left in the sink, showing<lb />
investigators that someone added<lb />
more paper towels to the fire to<lb />
give it fuel. The fire in Joyner East<lb />
also occurred in a garbage can in<lb />
one of the bathrooms.<lb />

State's 2006 ATV death toll<lb />
rises to a record 49<lb />
(AP)A North Carolina man<lb />
was killed in an all-terrain vehicle<lb />
accident, bringing the state's<lb />
ATVrelated death toll to a<lb />
record 49 for 2006.<lb />
Bobby Kemp Edwards, 57, of<lb />
Goldsboro, N.C, was attempting<lb />
to climb a steep embankment<lb />
in rural Mingo County when<lb />
his ATV flipped, pinning him.<lb />
Edwards was pronounced dead<lb />
at the scene, said State Police in<lb />
Gilbert.<lb />
It wasn't immediately known<lb />
what day the accident occurred. No<lb />
one was in the Gilbert detachment<lb />
on Saturday.<lb />
State lawmakers are review-<lb />
ing West Virginia's ATV law this<lb />
year for possible modifications.<lb />
They agreed to the review after a<lb />
record 40 people died last year in<lb />
ATVrelated accidents.<lb />
All residents evacuated to<lb />

(AP)Residents trickled back<lb />
into town Saturday, voicing relief<lb />
after a fire at a hazardous materials<lb />
storage plant forced them to flee their<lb />
homes for two nights but caused no<lb />
serious injuries or damage.<lb />
A few roadblocks remained<lb />
near the stillsmoldering rubble<lb />
of the EQ Industrial Services plant,<lb />
but the burning smell and poten-<lb />
tially toxic clouds of fumes were<lb />
gone. Still, some residents heeded<lb />
advice of environmental officials.<lb />
Officials said 44 people went<lb />
to emergency rooms, most com-<lb />
plaining of breathing problems,<lb />
but nearly all had been released<lb />
by midday Friday.<lb />
"It could have been much<lb />
worse Radford, the town man-<lb />
ager, said.<lb />
He also said the incident has<lb />
taught people to be more aware of<lb />
what's in their neighborhoods.<lb />

Steve Irwin have launched a sting-<lb />
ing attack on an Australian man for<lb />
snapping up his daughter's domain<lb />
name to allegedly profit from the<lb />
Crocodile Hunter's death.<lb />
Wayne Smith, a former vol-<lb />
unteer at Irwin's Australia Zoo,<lb />
bought bindiirwin.com on the<lb />
pretext of dedicating the site to the<lb />
grieving eight year old.<lb />
But Smith retorts, "The main<lb />
reason I purchased it was to keep<lb />
it out of the hands of advertising<lb />
agencies.<lb />
"I'm also a wildlife enthusiast who<lb />
once worked at Australia Zoo as a<lb />

Smith has been forced to sign<lb />

Drunken Bear Released<lb />
After Sleep-Off<lb />
(KMTR)Wildlife officials<lb />
used a tranquilizer dart to bring<lb />
down a bear stumbling drunk<lb />
through Lyons, Colo as children<lb />
set off for school.<lb />
Around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday,<lb />
a woman watering her backyard<lb />
said she was startled by the female<lb />
bear, estimated to be about 4 years<lb />
old, KCNCTV, Denver reported<lb />
Wednesday.<lb />
Deputies responded quickly,<lb />
as many children would soon be<lb />
on the streets headed for Lyons<lb />
Elementary School, the television<lb />
station said. Those already at the<lb />
school were herded into the gym-<lb />
nasium as a precaution.<lb />
The deputies fired a beanbag<lb />
projectile at the bear in hopes it<lb />
would set off on its own but it kept<lb />
meandering near the school. State<lb />
Division of Wildlife officers shot<lb />
the bear with a tranquilizer dart.<lb />
They said the bear had most<lb />
likely been eating rotting apples<lb />
in preparation for winter hiber-<lb />
nation, which made it drunk, the<lb />
report said.<lb />
The bear was tagged for its<lb />
first offense and Wednesday was<lb />
taken to a higher elevation for<lb />
release, officials told KCNC.<lb />

What people found most<lb />
insightful about Allam's<lb />
presentation was her sense of<lb />
objectivity, her open-minded-<lb />
ness on both perspectives and<lb />
her willingness and enthusiasm<lb />
about reporting the truth from<lb />
both sides.<lb />
"You just learn very quickly<lb />
that in all these conflicts<lb />
there are no angels Allam stated.<lb />
"That each side can commit trans-<lb />
gressions and there is no such<lb />
thing as a clean conflict, really.<lb />
Once you tell that, you just look<lb />
for the little scraps of humanity<lb />
in a story. To me, no body else<lb />
will write about these people<lb />
so I'm going to write about them<lb />
in loving detail. I just want to<lb />
present the most complete, human<lb />
picture possible and give their<lb />
deaths justice, whether it's an<lb />
American death, an Iraqi death,<lb />
an Iranian death. Then I feel that<lb />
I've done my job by just showing<lb />
the universal suffering that this<lb />
can cause<lb />
Allam's final message to the<lb />
students of ECU and the genera-<lb />
tion they represent was one of open-<lb />
mindedness and world awareness.<lb />
"I don't think geography<lb />

(MCT) Paco is down to his<lb />
last prophet<lb />
He stands on a 6 foot scaffold<lb />
surveying the image of Joel, and<lb />
the few unpainted blotches left<lb />
on a 2,511 square foot ceiling. He<lb />
pulls a paint-spray respirator over<lb />
his goatee and shakes an aerosol<lb />
can, the metal ball inside rattling<lb />
noisily. He leans back and begins<lb />
to spray brown paint in quick<lb />
strokes of his left hand on the<lb />
plaster ceiling.<lb />
The details emerge on a pair<lb />
of cherubs supporting a decorative<lb />
column beside Joel. They are the<lb />
last nourishes of a massive under-<lb />
taking: A hall-scale replica of the<lb />
Sistine Chapel ceiling, one of art<lb />
history's most remarkable feats.<lb />
And here it is in downtown<lb />
Waterloo, a heck of a long way<lb />
from Rome. The river here is not<lb />
Tiber, but the Cedar. The artist is<lb />
not Michelangelo, but Paco Rosic,<lb />
27, a refugee of the Bosnian war.<lb />
The medium this time is spray<lb />
paint. But the likeness to the<lb />
Renaissance original is striking,<lb />
and unmistakable.<lb />
Rosic began the painting in<lb />
July in a historic building that his<lb />
family is converting to a restaurant<lb />
and gallery. After studying photos<lb />
of Michelangelo's work so long<lb />
that it showed up in his dreams,<lb />
Rosic laid down a foundation of<lb />
almond-colored spray paint and<lb />
tried not to think what he was<lb />
getting himself into.<lb />
"If you think too much, you're<lb />
going to kill your head Rosic said.<lb />
"I just started doing it. Then, every<lb />
once in a while, I would stop and look<lb />
and think, 'Oh wow I would freak<lb />
out a little. "What am I doing?<lb />
All summer, curious onlookers<lb />
stopped by as Rosic put in 10 to 15<lb />
hour days spray painting the ceil-<lb />
ing amidst the noisy hammers and<lb />
drills of construction work.<lb />
At first Rosic lay on his back<lb />
to spray the ceiling, but the extra<lb />
scaffolding scratched the floor, so<lb />
he switched to standing up and<lb />
bending backward. He stopped<lb />
counting after he went through<lb />
2,000 cans of Krylon paint and<lb />
spent more than $6,000 of his<lb />
savings.<lb />
And in the next few weeks,<lb />
he will finish it: nine Genesis<lb />
stories, seven prophets and five<lb />
sybils spread over 81 feet by 31<lb />
feet, almost the square footage of<lb />
a tennis court.<lb />
"This is what I live for Rosic<lb />
explains simply. "Just to paint.<lb />
Nothing else<lb />
The young artist's work, and<lb />
the scale, is impressive, said illus-<lb />
trator Gary Kelley, who lives in<lb />
nearby Cedar Falls and has been<lb />
published in the New Yorker, Time<lb />
and Rolling Stone.<lb />
Five reasons that students should care<lb />
about world events and the Middle East:<lb />
According to Hannah Allam,<lb />
1. Instability in the Middle East means instability in some of the largest<lb />
oil producers in the world.<lb />
2. Casualty figures: 2,700 U.S. soldiers killed. 28,000 wounded<lb />
soldiers who have to be integrated into our society. Many of them are<lb />
young adults.<lb />
3. Security Threat: Be aware of our image in the world.<lb />
4. The security threat posed when large parts of the world are against<lb />
our country.<lb />
4. Your liberties at home: How much they can be eroded in fighting a<lb />
war on terror, and what the pay-off is.<lb />
5. Helps you become a global citizen: Be aware and engaged in the<lb />
world around you. Be a better-rounded person.<lb />

Celebrating National Physician Assistant Week<lb />
October 6-12, 2006<lb />
(MCT) College students<lb />
Who still have fresh memories<lb />
of sweating their way through<lb />
tin' SAT testing process and the<lb />
angst- ridden college application<lb />
ritual might have justifiably let<lb />
out a snicker of delight last week.<lb />
Imagine their pleasure at<lb />
the thought of having the tables<lb />
turned on those same colleges<lb />
that Forced them through that<lb />
painful judging process That<lb />
could be the case if U.S. Educa-<lb />
tion Secretary Margaret Spell-<lb />
ings gets her way.<lb />
In a much-anticipated speech<lb />
at the National Press Club in<lb />
Washington last week. Spellings<lb />
highlighted a five-point plan to<lb />
put a fire under the American<lb />
higher education establishment to<lb />
start a process of what she called<lb />
"long-overdue reform" to ensure<lb />
American colleges don't lose their<lb />
global competitive edge.<lb />
One of the more controversial<lb />
aspects of Spellings' broad plan<lb />
is to make public universities<lb />
measure the value they add for<lb />
students by having standard-<lb />
ized testing. The idea is to give<lb />
consumers, parents, prospective<lb />
students and the taxpayers who<lb />
pay for these schools, a better<lb />
and more reliable measure of<lb />
their perfbnnance than the highly<lb />
suspect rankings that exist cur-<lb />
rently, such as those produced by<lb />
U.S. News & World<lb />
Good idea, but with a catch.<lb />
Schools are so different that it<lb />
would be hard to make compari-<lb />
sons. I've always thought that when<lb />
you get right down to it. commu-<lb />
nity colleges, the often forgotten<lb />
sector of the academic world,<lb />
arguably boost their students'<lb />
academic prowess more than elite<lb />
schools like Harvard and Yale.<lb />
Consider: The elites have a rigor-<lb />
ous process to weed out all appli-<lb />
cants except those who already<lb />
show great academic proficiency.<lb />
It makes you wonder when<lb />
you hear what some college<lb />
presidents say on the subject.<lb />
At one hearing earlier this year<lb />
hosted by the 19 member panel<lb />
established by Spellings to come<lb />
up with her reform proposal,<lb />
Tufts University president Larry<lb />
Bacow had this to say, according<lb />
to the online publication Inside<lb />
Higher Kd: "Our costs are com-<lb />
pletely beyond our control Talk<lb />
about passing the buck on how<lb />
you spend the bucks.<lb />
Many elite schools also talk<lb />
a lot about the need tor a diverse<lb />
student body - and yet when it<lb />
comes to economic diversity, they<lb />
fail miserably. Look at the number<lb />
of enrolled students at these elites<lb />
who come from families with<lb />
incomes low enough to qualify for<lb />
federal Pell Grants. The percent-<lb />
ages are often in the single digits.<lb />
That's unconscionable.<lb />
CUP<lb />
continued from Al<lb />
surprisingly doesn't mind.<lb />
"I didn't like doing dishes<lb />
as a kid, but 1 have no problem<lb />
washing a dish now Bolt said.<lb />
"It's probably one of the most<lb />
prestigious dishes. I'm a profes-<lb />
sional dishwasher also, it goes<lb />
along with the Cup Keeper<lb />
The Cup, which the Hurri-<lb />
canes claimed in June, symbol-<lb />
izes the first championship in the<lb />
franchise's history and the first<lb />
championship ever for any profes-<lb />
sional North Carolina team.<lb />
Britt Johnson, the backup long<lb />
snapper tor the ECU football team,<lb />
said he, along with teammates<lb />
Kort Shankweiler and Thomas<lb />
Wingenbach, attended Game two<lb />
of the Stanley Cup Finals in June<lb />
and he was enthused about seeing<lb />
the Cup firsthand.<lb />
"I've always watched the Hur-<lb />
ricane, but last year we were able to<lb />
get to some games and we just really<lb />
caught on said Johnson, a senior<lb />
physical education major. "That<lb />
just really made it a big time experi-<lb />
ence to be able to see them win it<lb />
Other fans turned out for<lb />
what Andy Olson of Washing-<lb />

said Olson, an IT network man-<lb />

"This is a huge thing. It should<lb />

said assistant ECU coach Todd<lb />

was already put out by the ECU<lb />
police said Waters. "They had<lb />
pulled the garbage can into the<lb />
hall and extinguished it. We<lb />
just set up fans to try and air the<lb />
smoke out of the building<lb />
Both fires were put out before<lb />
any major damages to the build-<lb />
ing were able to occur.<lb />
"The police responded fast<lb />
and got the garbage can out of<lb />
there, so no damage was caused<lb />
to the building said Waters.<lb />
"There was not even any damage<lb />
from the smoke<lb />
Officials think both fires may<lb />
have been started by the same<lb />
person because there are many<lb />
similarities in the way they were<lb />
started. Although police have<lb />
talked to many witnesses, they<lb />
do not know who is responsible<lb />
for the fires yet.<lb />

Home of the Pirate Rants <lb />
Wei come to<lb />
retail hell<lb />
SARAH CAMPBELL<lb />
ASSISTANT FEATURES EDITOR<lb />
The cooler temperatures and shorter days<lb />
signify the beginning of a season that brings<lb />
joy to almost everyone, except me. The fact that<lb />
Christmas is just a few short months away not<lb />
only makes me cringe, it makes me want to crawl<lb />
in a hole and camp out until the madness is over.<lb />
You may be wondering why Christmas is such a<lb />
touchy subject for me well, here's my explanation:<lb />
1 work in retail.<lb />
Anyone that has .ever worked in retail during<lb />
the holiday season knows on a first hand basis<lb />
just how much hell is endured. After getting home<lb />
from a 9 or 10 hour shift you feel not only physi-<lb />
cally exhausted, but emotionally drained as well.<lb />
Sometimes I can't even talk to another human<lb />
being after work for fear that I will take out my<lb />
pent up frustrations from the day on them.<lb />
Customers are the root to almost every prob-<lb />
lem. First of all they think or rather know that<lb />
everything is your fault. If we are out of a product<lb />
it must be my fault because I obviously do the<lb />
ordering for the entire store or if an item rings<lb />
up the wrong price I must be conspiring against<lb />
them in some kind of plot to scam every customer<lb />
out of IS cents.<lb />
Next, they are inconsiderate beyond belief.<lb />
Customers next consider the fact that you just<lb />
spend SO minutes straightening a rack of cloth-<lb />
ing, they just come along push the clothes to the<lb />
side and knock half the rack on the floor right in<lb />
front of your very eyes. Sometimes it's all I can<lb />
do to keep myself from bringing a stun gun to<lb />
work and taking every opportunity to shock the<lb />
unsuspecting jerks.<lb />
Do me a favor the next you are wondering what<lb />
a certain product looks like outside of the package,<lb />
look on the box. Yeah believe it or not there is a<lb />
picture of almost every product on the box, there-<lb />
fore you don't have to open it to find out what's<lb />
inside because you already know. When customers<lb />
open boxes and leave them that ends up putting<lb />
hours more work per week on the store employees.<lb />
However, the thing that frightens me the most<lb />
is the fact that the population of rude inconsiderate<lb />
people is rapidly expanding. Rather than teaching<lb />
their children manner, parents are allowing their<lb />
kids to act just as obscenely as they do. Parents<lb />
love to mumble phrases similar to "they get paid<lb />
to do that while motioning their children to con-<lb />
tinue walking after knocking something down.<lb />
Here's a newsflash to everyone, yes to do get<lb />
paid to pick clothes up off the floor, be at the<lb />
beckon call of ungrateful customers and generally<lb />
straighten up the messes that other people spend<lb />
as much time possible making, but the $6.50 per<lb />
hour is nowhere near enough.<lb />
Maybe the next time you're a cruising through<lb />
a store and knocking things off the rack, tearing<lb />
up tables full of neatly folded shirts and treating<lb />
the employees like second class citizens remember<lb />
that someone does has to clean up your mess and<lb />
that someone is me.<lb />
Longer library hours<lb />
more convenient<lb />
Studyingdoesn'tonlyoccurbefore2a.m.<lb />
STACY DAIL<lb />
OPINION WRITER<lb />
Being a full time college student, taking over 15<lb />
hours worth of classes, having massive amounts of<lb />
homework, mixed in with two jobs and somewhat<lb />
of a social life, sleep isn't something I get a lot of.<lb />
Like the typical college student, I must admit that I<lb />
l( put off study ing for a big exam as long as possible, but<lb />
when the dreaded day arrives, my night before is filled<lb />
with endless hours of cramming and nonstop studying.<lb />
Since I am easily distracted, studying at my house<lb />
iin't something that I'm good at. So like many other<lb />
KCU students, I flock to Joyner Library, hoping that<lb />
the atmosphere will bring some sort of motivation<lb />
to study hard.<lb />
Eleven o'clock, midnight and finally one and two<lb />
in the morning roll around. I'm still not finished<lb />
studying, not even close for that matter, but I'm sud-<lb />
denly told to leave because the library is about to close.<lb />
Given that this is a college library, where students<lb />
are accustomed to staying up all night, shouldn't our<lb />
library go along with the daily routines of so many of<lb />
our students? Why close at 2 a.m even though many<lb />
students need to stay in that library setting so that<lb />
their test the next day won't be a complete failure?<lb />
In addition1 would like to point out that the clubs<lb />
downtown also close at 2 a.m and some students may<lb />
want to come into the library after they get back from<lb />
a night of fun. Sure it's probably not a common thing,<lb />
but I personally enjoy having a few hours of stress<lb />
free fun and then hitting the books afterwards. This<lb />
isn't possible when the library closes about the time<lb />
I get back, and it just leaves me with a computer and<lb />
a bunch of people to distract me from studying.<lb />
So, why not make the library open all night<lb />
during the week, and keep the same hours on the<lb />
weekends? I understand that there aren't tons of<lb />
students who go to the library at 3 a.m but wouldn't<lb />
adding more convenience to the lives of those who<lb />
do, be a good thing?<lb />
There wouldn't have to be 50 librarians walk-<lb />
ing around to assist us in our every need, because<lb />
chances are that if a student is making the library<lb />
their home that late at night, then they are quite<lb />
familiar with Joyner Library and what it has to offer.<lb />
KCU, especially the students, are constantly talk-<lb />
ing about how they are tired of being known as just a<lb />
"party school and would like to be recognized as a<lb />
g(Kd college, not just a safety school where people go<lb />
just because they couldn't get in anywhere else.<lb />
So, changing the library hours, making it open to<lb />
students around the clock, would be adding one more<lb />
privilege that prestigious schools such as N.C. State<lb />
and Duke already have. Sure, it's a small step, but it<lb />
shows that ECU is serious about helping their stu-<lb />
dents succeed, which is in fact, what we are here to do.<lb />
Closing the library at 2 a.m even though I have<lb />
two more chapters to study isn't going to make me<lb />
or the university look good, so why not make this<lb />
little change to ensure that everyone looks and feels<lb />
successful and intelligent?<lb />
PIRATE RANTS<lb />
Hey roommate how many times do<lb />
we have to throw your books at your<lb />
door before you start keeping them<lb />
in your room? And stop going on<lb />
Facebook 19 hours a day, it's a real<lb />
problem man.<lb />
Why do goats get milked?<lb />
If it weren't for Pirate Rants, TEC<lb />
would just be fish wrap.<lb />
Does anyone else love "Two-A-Days?"<lb />
I think Max is absolutely adorable<lb />
and if he wasn't jailbait, I'd so date<lb />
him! Go Hoover!<lb />
Go Duke Lacrosse!<lb />
Why do you only gam weight inyour face?<lb />
You know how two negatives make<lb />
a positive? Does it work the same<lb />
for ugly people? Like could two ugly<lb />
people make one cute baby?<lb />
Ladies, if you want to compliment me,<lb />
tell me my hair looks magnificent.<lb />
Because it does.<lb />
Turning off the buses to save gas<lb />
would be a great idea if they ran<lb />
on gas. It's called diesel. What was<lb />
that about common sense?<lb />
I don't know if incorrect grammar is a<lb />
hallmark of all fraternity and sorority<lb />
members, but the past pluperfect<lb />
of write is "had written not "had<lb />
wrote I also saw in the last rants<lb />
several ridiculous spelling errors that<lb />
were not typos, "loose" instead of<lb />
"lose" for example. Remind us why<lb />
you fratters pay your tuition.<lb />
Wright Fountain. And that's all I<lb />
gotta say. Isn't it sweet that our<lb />
administration's digressed to such<lb />
simplicity, whereat the Wright<lb />
Fountain becomes its own punch<lb />
line?<lb />
It's good o see that I am not the only<lb />
one who arrives to class 25 minutes<lb />
early. Thanks OCD's!<lb />
If beauty were a minute, you would<lb />
be an hour.<lb />
Wow. Some girls are so naive. If<lb />
only she knew what her "boyfriend"<lb />
was doing with me this summer<lb />
while she was back home if<lb />
she knew what he is still trying to<lb />
do. Few words of advice honey:<lb />
Once a cheater, always a cheater.<lb />
I think homosexuality is wrong and<lb />
disgusting. Except for lesbians,<lb />
they're cool.<lb />
Why do cops wear pants when its<lb />
hot outside?<lb />
I loved your article on Greensboro.<lb />
I truly believe that the 'boro is the<lb />
greatest city in North Carolina.<lb />
I just want to swim through a pool<lb />
of grapes!<lb />
My parents spanked me as a child,<lb />
punished me in high school and now<lb />
being able to do what I want to in college,<lb />
I have complete respect for them.<lb />
Next time I see a kid wearing a tie to<lb />
a football game I'm going to choke<lb />
him with it.<lb />
Yes, it's a very bad thing that you<lb />
haven't been to class yet. Apparently,<lb />
you need to develop a sense of<lb />
responsibility and stop wasting your<lb />
parents' money on tuition, books and<lb />
partying. Otherwise, I understand<lb />
that Hardees has several dead-end<lb />
positions open for line cooks and<lb />
counter servers. Grow up and stop<lb />
acting like you're 15!<lb />
A friend recently told me that ECU<lb />
became the Pirates because pirates<lb />
once stopped here along long time ago<lb />
in search for alcohol. I do not think<lb />
this its true but it seems fitting!<lb />
I hate my job. I cannot wait for December<lb />
when I graduate and I can quit.<lb />
I don't know why, but away messages<lb />
make me feel the need to put my entire<lb />
life up for the whole world to see.<lb />
The switchover from breakfast to<lb />
lunch happens at 10:30. Just wanted<lb />
to make sure the ladies in Mendenhall<lb />
know that. If people show up at<lb />
10:20, we should be able to get<lb />
breakfast!<lb />
Way to go football team.<lb />
Joseph Scheidler is an idiot! How<lb />
can banning birth control prevent<lb />
abortion? As Charley Brown would<lb />
say: Aaarrrggh! I think his logic is<lb />
a little skewed, but thank you Stacy<lb />
Dail for your article. This is becoming<lb />
a very big issue and women need to<lb />
stand up for their rights.<lb />
I absolutely hate when I spend forever<lb />
straightening my hair only to go<lb />
outside and have it look disgusting<lb />
in 30 seconds.<lb />
My advice to everyone: Do not sit in<lb />
a window seat on the bus when its<lb />
raining out. The seat is always wet<lb />
and squishy.<lb />
I can have nonsense conversations<lb />
with people in classes or pretty much<lb />
anyone else in the world, but I can't<lb />
have an even slightly meaningful or<lb />
real conversation with my closest<lb />
friends. What's wrong with me?<lb />
Some advisors are not helpful at all.<lb />
Just because you are a new pledge<lb />
in the same fraternity that my ex-<lb />
boyfriend is in does not mean that<lb />
you can't be interested in me when<lb />
you want to be. So please call me like<lb />
you said you would.<lb />
If you think he's lying, go with your<lb />
gut instinct.<lb />
I don't like it when people put<lb />
pictures up online and don't turn<lb />
them the right way.<lb />
To the football team, you all<lb />
have converted me into a Pirate<lb />
fan, and though I still like Duke<lb />
basketball, you all are my 1<lb />
college football team. Go Pirates!<lb />
You and your boyfriend annoy me,<lb />
nobody likes either of you together<lb />
as a couple.<lb />
How do you tell someone that you<lb />
love everything about them but it's<lb />
just not there?<lb />
Take a hint!<lb />
Don't tell me you quit smoking when<lb />
you obviously haven't.<lb />
I wish that I could compliment my<lb />
statistic teacher's haircut without her<lb />
thinking I am trying to be a teacher's pet.<lb />
Why do some girls put so much pressure<lb />
on marriage? It's a little bit scary ladies.<lb />
Why is it that ECU computers always<lb />
take so long to load my "personal<lb />
settings?" Mine look an awful lot like<lb />
everyone else's.<lb />
How about not doing Sudoku in<lb />
the front row of my class anymore?<lb />
Why is it ECU closes the library and<lb />
computer lab early on weekends?<lb />
Working and going to school on<lb />
weekdays means studying on<lb />
weekends. Why encourage last<lb />
minute studying, when we can give<lb />
students plenty of time to study on<lb />
the weekend!<lb />
Just because you like gay men doesn't<lb />
. mean you're weird it just means<lb />
you're probably gay too.<lb />
To the people that think Greeks run<lb />
SGA please feel free to sit in on an<lb />
SGA meeting every Monday at five in<lb />
the Mendenhall Social room. You will<lb />
find that there is representation from<lb />
all different types of people. Plus, if<lb />
you don't like it, don't forget that you<lb />
have a chance to be screened on to<lb />
join the SGA senate and have your<lb />
voice heard.<lb />
I saw some high school kids checking<lb />
out the campus the other day and<lb />
they were with their parents and<lb />
they all picked up an East Carolinian<lb />
newspaper They are going to think<lb />
terrible things of our school because<lb />
of your Pirate Rants.<lb />
Get off Facebook. It is evil.<lb />
Why is it that when you decide to pull<lb />
a late or all-nighter, no one's open to<lb />
give you coffee at 2 a.m.?<lb />
Mexican night was amazing at West<lb />
End. ECU you have outdone yourself!<lb />
It was possibly the best event the<lb />
University has had better than<lb />
Pirate Palooza or Barefoot!<lb />
Downtown Discrimination<lb />
When will Pirates care<lb />
enough to take a stand?<lb />
JUSTIN SUMMERS<lb />
OPINION WRITER<lb />
It is rather unfortunate that in<lb />
a college town such as Greenville<lb />
there is so much apathy towards<lb />
racism and discrimination in<lb />
area bars and clubs. Like many<lb />
other ECU students, I was down-<lb />
town last Friday night, where<lb />
I experienced first hand the<lb />
discriminating techniques of<lb />
club owners and bouncers use<lb />
to filter "undesirable guests<lb />
I have heard and read about<lb />
the discrimination in Greenville<lb />
bars and clubs numerous times,<lb />
but as a white civilian student,<lb />
I had never experienced it first<lb />
hand, until this past Friday<lb />
night.<lb />
Around midnight, my brother<lb />
and I, along with one of his<lb />
friends from the Coast Guard,<lb />
were trying to enter the Element<lb />
on Cotanche Street. I had warned<lb />
my brother and his shipmate that<lb />
area bars often don't let enlisted<lb />
men in based on the idea they<lb />
are too rowdy, and advised them<lb />
not to use their military ID's.<lb />
Ignoring me, my brother's friend<lb />
showed the doorman his military<lb />
II) and was immediately shut<lb />
down. The bouncer said he could<lb />
not enter because he did not have<lb />
a student ID.<lb />
Then, I had watched ten<lb />
or twenty people enter with-<lb />
out showing their Onecards<lb />
and barked this at the bouncer.<lb />
Next, things heated up between<lb />
the doorman and us and before<lb />
I knew it, my brother and his<lb />
friend were pushed out of the<lb />
bar and onto their backs on the<lb />
sidewalk.<lb />
I felt ashamed and embar-<lb />
rassed that the first time my<lb />
brother visits me in Greenville;<lb />
he ends up on his ass in front of a<lb />
crowd of people. My brother, also<lb />
feeling embarrassed, approached<lb />
one of the 1,500 police officers<lb />
fighting crime in the street and<lb />
told him what happened. Of<lb />
course, the cops who were aware<lb />
of the policy, and help to enforce it,<lb />
told my brother he was out of luck.<lb />
The policy in Greenville is<lb />
that bars and clubs are private<lb />
and must require memberships<lb />
as well as dress codes to limit<lb />
the clientele. However, as few<lb />
people know, they use this free-<lb />
dom to filter their customers in<lb />
a biased fashion. No white tees or<lb />
Timberlands is a recurring motto<lb />
downtown and is always strictly<lb />
enforced. Backwards hats and<lb />
urban apparel will not up your<lb />
chances of getting in either.<lb />
I spoke with a group of His-<lb />
panic guys outside of another<lb />
club who said the only bar they<lb />
could get into was Scores, and in<lb />
most clubs it is rare to see groups<lb />
of black students. Most marines<lb />
and armed service members will<lb />
tell you about the discrimination<lb />
against them. Why then if the<lb />
probiem is so openly biased, does<lb />
no one care at ECU?<lb />
We are students of higher<lb />
learning who should oppose dis-<lb />
crimination of any kind and be<lb />
active in addressing the problem.<lb />
In a town with a large African<lb />
American population and a grow-<lb />
ing Latino community, we need<lb />
to address racial and non-racial<lb />
discrimination. North Carolina<lb />
is home to many military bases<lb />
and has a huge number of soldiers<lb />
that are fighting and dying in<lb />
Iraq and Afghanistan. Why deny<lb />
entry into local bars and clubs<lb />
to the people who pay local and<lb />
state taxes and not to mention die<lb />
for our country?<lb />
We pirates are the ones who<lb />
keep theses bars open and in<lb />
business, until all pirates and<lb />
non-pirates black, blue and cam-<lb />
ouflage can get drunk together,<lb />
why continue to fill the pockets<lb />
of biased club owners?<lb />
Learning takes<lb />
a backseat<lb />
Unclear professors make things difficult<lb />
RYAN COBEY<lb />
OPINION WRITER<lb />
We all tend to remember the first day<lb />
of a new semester. There is always that<lb />
sense of mystery about a professor you've<lb />
never had before. Sometimes we get lucky<lb />
and our new instructor, by some miracle,<lb />
intrigues us and makes class interest-<lb />
ing. But there is always that one profes-<lb />
sor that no matter how hard you try, you<lb />
cannot and will not ever understand.<lb />
Perhaps it is the monotone voice that<lb />
always seems to force your eyes shut, or the<lb />
accent of an instructor of a different nation-<lb />
ality. And as you sit at your desk, attempting<lb />
to comprehend the reading of your syllabus,<lb />
you begin to wonder if the class will get<lb />
better once the teaching actually starts.<lb />
We are now halfway through the semes-<lb />
ter, and I think it is quite safe to say that<lb />
no, it probably hasn't. In fact, it has most<lb />
likely gotten worse.<lb />
Many of us have had this problem, and<lb />
if you haven't I can almost guarantee that<lb />
you will encounter such a professor in your<lb />
time at ECU. We commonly associate our<lb />
foreign language and physics professors with<lb />
these attributes, but you may be surprised<lb />
to find out that there are instructors in<lb />
other departments such as communication<lb />
and business that fit the same description.<lb />
I've given up on listening entirely in some<lb />
of my classes, and while playing with a bent<lb />
paperclip one day I thought to myself, how<lb />
do professors who seemingly have hardly<lb />
any educational experience get hired at a<lb />
prominent degree granting institution such<lb />
as ECU?<lb />
It is a fact that our campus is home to<lb />
many professors who have researched and<lb />
reported on very important topics in our<lb />
society. However, the job of a professor<lb />
should not only be to research their particu-<lb />
lar field of study. In fact, it should first and<lb />
foremost be to educate the student body.<lb />
I'm sure this is quite common at other<lb />
schools as well. I transferred from Appala-<lb />
chian State and I distinctly remember being<lb />
unable to understand both of my economics<lb />
professors. One was Swedish and the other<lb />
was German, and yes, they were teaching<lb />
American Economics.<lb />
Diversity in the job market is always a<lb />
very controversial topic, and I agree full<lb />
heartedly that we should not discriminate<lb />
when hiring. However, I believe someone<lb />
who can effectively balance educating and<lb />
researching in a way that benefits us, as<lb />
paying students, should fill a position as<lb />
important as a professor's. After all, we as<lb />
full-time students are spending up to $2,500<lb />
a semester to obtain a quality education, and<lb />
if half of our classes are taught by profes-<lb />
sors who can't pronounce half of the words<lb />
in the English language we obviously aren't<lb />
getting our money's worth.<lb />
I've found that going to class is the<lb />
best way to keep your grades up, but in<lb />
some of my classes, I feel like I'm going<lb />
just to sign my name on the attendance<lb />
sheet. It is amazing what you can do with<lb />
a paperclip, a stapler and an hour to kill.<lb />

Early detection key in fighting cancer<lb />
This week's health<lb />
information is vital to<lb />
your health<lb />
LIZ FULTON<lb />
SENIOR WRITER<lb />
October is National Breast<lb />
Cancer Awareness month, and<lb />
it is a time to remind all women<lb />
about what they need to do to<lb />
stay healthy. The purpose of this<lb />
month is to educate women about<lb />
early breast cancer detection,<lb />
diagnosis and treatment. Regard-<lb />
less of whether you are 18 or 45,<lb />
knowing what the signs of breast<lb />
cancer are and how to check for<lb />
them is necessary for saving your<lb />
life, or someone else's.<lb />
According to WebMD.com,<lb />
self breast exams should be done<lb />
by women once a month begin-<lb />
ning at the age of 20. One week<lb />
after your period, conduct a self<lb />
exam by first looking at them<lb />
in the mirror to see if you notice<lb />
any lumps or abnormalities. Next,<lb />
use the pads of your fingers and<lb />
press firmly on your breasts and<lb />
armpit areas to feel for anything<lb />
strange. Check them the same<lb />
way every month and call your<lb />
doctor immediately if anything<lb />
causes alarm.<lb />
Researchers have also found<lb />
that active women are 20 percent<lb />
less likely to get breast cancer<lb />
than those who do not regularly<lb />
exercise an hour and a half a week.<lb />
Unfortunately, this is not always<lb />
the case if a woman's mother,<lb />
sister or daughter has already been<lb />
diagnosed, for they would have to<lb />
exercise an excess of three hours<lb />
or more a week.<lb />
The risk of breast cancer<lb />
increases with age and it is uncom-<lb />
mon for anyone under 35 to be<lb />
diagnosed. However, studies are<lb />
beginning to find that alcohol<lb />
consumption may affect a wom-<lb />
an's risk for breast cancer. The<lb />
National Institute on Alcohol<lb />
Abuse and Alcoholism concluded<lb />
that "Chronic alcohol consumption<lb />
has been associated with a small<lb />
(averaging 10 percent)increase in<lb />
a woman's risk of breast cancer<lb />
According to these studies,<lb />
the risk appears to increase as the<lb />
quantity and duration of alcohol<lb />
consumption increases. Other<lb />
studies have also found similar<lb />
results, but they have been too<lb />
inconsistent to say how much<lb />
alcohol is too much.<lb />
Studies have also shown that<lb />
women who gain at least 22 pounds<lb />
after menopause are 18 percent<lb />
more likely to be diagnosed with <lb />
breast cancer than a woman who g<lb />
does not gain weight.<lb />
see CANCER page A6<lb />
Both men and women need to do monthly self-breast exams to detect any changes that could be breast cancer.<lb />

Since 1998, the Black Student<lb />

members have become successful<lb />
leaders on the campus and else-<lb />

the school community but in and<lb />
around Greenville as well.<lb />
In its first month this semester,<lb />
BSU accumulated over 200 mem-<lb />

well as one of the largest. Every<lb />

The purpose of this organiza-<lb />

black students and organizations<lb />
at ECU. They aim to influence<lb />
policies affecting black students<lb />
at ECU and promote the academic<lb />
performance and growth among<lb />
its members, ECU and Greenville.<lb />
The BSU at ECU is all about<lb />
student involvement and interac-<lb />

and discouraging apathy, the<lb />
organization is really stepping up<lb />
and doing a great deal to provide a<lb />

There are 10 committees<lb />
within BSU that are all designed<lb />
to foster participation and contri-<lb />

According to BSU Pres-<lb />

building an organization of<lb />

The organization averages<lb />

ECU offers students a wide<lb />

the athletic training program. Stu-<lb />

introduced to learning techniques,<lb />
which include class work, shadow-<lb />

One of the visible places to run<lb />

on the sidelines at an athletic event,<lb />

The hands-on experience the<lb />

Saturday, Oct. 7, the ECU<lb />

of the lecture.<lb />
Women in Japan focuses on<lb />
the lives of six women in contem-<lb />

their personal lives, work and<lb />
language. It was filmed in five<lb />

"Anyone who thought Memoirs<lb />

CANCER<lb />
continued from A5<lb />
There are no magic steps a<lb />
woman can take in order to pre-<lb />
vent herself from getting breast<lb />
cancer. The most important thing<lb />
is early detection, which can<lb />
increase a woman's chance for<lb />
beating the disease. Encourage<lb />
every woman you know to check<lb />
her breasts or to at least visit her<lb />
gynecologist once a year for an<lb />
exam. There are several orga-<lb />

a variety of meeting opportunities<lb />
in between.<lb />
One of the group's claims to<lb />
fame includes volunteering in pro-<lb />
grams such as Adopt-A-Highway<lb />
and Adopt-A-Family. In Adopt-<lb />
A-Highway, the students are<lb />
responsible for keeping a portion<lb />
of 10th Street free of pollution.<lb />
Money is raised to buy gifts and<lb />
essential items to a local family<lb />
through Adopt-A-Kamily.<lb />
After the devastation of Hur-<lb />
ricane Katrina, the ATSC col-<lb />
lected a number of supplies for<lb />
the athletic training program at<lb />
Southern Miss University.<lb />
Besides volunteering, you<lb />
can see this group of around 9.5<lb />
students working concessions<lb />
for the home volleyball matches<lb />
as well as playing ball boys and<lb />
girls for the women's soccer team<lb />
during matches.<lb />
This year the organization<lb />
is interested in implementing an<lb />
outreach program for local high<lb />
school students in order to raise<lb />
awareness and interest for the<lb />
athletic training program.<lb />
It may seem like this group is<lb />
all work and no play, but they find<lb />
time to wind down through cook-<lb />

and bowling nights.<lb />
The mission of the ATSC<lb />
reflects the overall goals of the<lb />

providing students with the<lb />

to individual athletes as well as<lb />
the community, which essential in<lb />

can contribute to in one way or<lb />
another. No matter what each<lb />
person has to offer, their help is<lb />
always appreciated.<lb />
Whether it's money or a<lb />
couple hours of your time, you<lb />
too can help our community.<lb />
This Monday through Thursday<lb />
from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m they will<lb />
be having a bake sale in Wright<lb />
Place for breast cancer awareness,<lb />
all the proceeds will go to breast<lb />
cancer research.<lb />
The group will'also be par-<lb />
ticipating in the GULU walk on<lb />
Saturday, Oct. 28 on First Street<lb />
at .9:30 a.m. to raise awareness for<lb />
the war-torn Uganda. All money<lb />
raised will go to the nation's<lb />
children.<lb />
If walking and baking are out<lb />
of the question, there's always<lb />
modeling. Next semester they<lb />
have planned their second annual<lb />
AIDS benefit fashion show, where<lb />
ECU students will model clothing<lb />
to raise money for PICASO, an<lb />
organization devoted to the fight<lb />
against AIDS. This organization<lb />
provides several opportunities and<lb />
outlets for its members to become<lb />

ECU'S BSU has received<lb />
acknowledgement across the<lb />
state and was the only non-ivy<lb />
league school to attend the Princ-<lb />

Conference this year.<lb />
As a very close-knit and<lb />
bonded group, this is a great way<lb />
to get involved on campus and<lb />
plus, it will also help to beef up<lb />
your resume. Dues are only $5 for<lb />

RON CLEMENTS<lb />
SENIOR WRITER<lb />
The ECU football team<lb />
reshuffled its offensive line<lb />
during the off week in an effort<lb />
to get the running game on track.<lb />
It worked.<lb />
The Pirates ran for 208<lb />
yards and four touchdowns en<lb />
route to a 31-21 win over ACC<lb />
foe Virginia Saturday night at<lb />
Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.<lb />
Brandon Fractious, starting<lb />
in place of injured tailback Chris<lb />
Johnson, led the way for the Pirates<lb />
with 102 yards on 19 carries and a<lb />
touchdown in his first career start.<lb />
"The offensive line played a<lb />
great game and it made it simple<lb />
on our part said Fractious, a<lb />
senior from Rancho Cucanionga,<lb />
Calif. "It was smash-mouth foot-<lb />
ball. Coach THoltzl said he wanted<lb />
to run the ball this week and it just<lb />
worked out for us<lb />
Without Johnson or receiv-<lb />
ers Aundrae Allison and Jamar<lb />
Bryant, the Pirates still gained<lb />
482 yards of total offense, with<lb />
Bobby Good catching five passes<lb />
for 102 yards.<lb />
ECU Head Coach Skip Holtz<lb />
called Good's performance "awe-<lb />
some and was impressed with the<lb />
punishing running of sophomore<lb />
Brandon Simmons.<lb />
"I made Brandon Simmons<lb />
stand up in the team meeting<lb />
and 1 told him he was going to be<lb />
accountable to everybody on the<lb />
team and that he had to step up<lb />
said Holtz. "He had the biggest<lb />
grin on his face from ear to ear, like<lb />
this is what I've been waiting for.<lb />
It's what you want to see as a coach.<lb />
"He brought something to us<lb />
tonight. He brought a physical<lb />
nature. He didn't fall backwards.<lb />
When there was a collision, he was<lb />
normally the one going forward<lb />
and that's one of the things that<lb />
we've lacked<lb />
Junior Matt Butler was moved<lb />
from left guard to center and true<lb />
freshman Cory Dowless got his<lb />
first game action by starting at<lb />
left guard. The move paid off as<lb />
ECU (2-3) was able to move the<lb />
hall at will against a Virginia<lb />
defense ranked 20th in the coun-<lb />
try with a newly-found balanced<lb />
offensive attack.<lb />
"We moved Matt Butler tocenter<lb />
during the open date because we<lb />
li'lt like we needed a little more pop<lb />
at our center position Holtz said.<lb />
"We felt like we needed a<lb />
little more anchor to establish our<lb />
running game and we put him in<lb />
there and I said the only thing I<lb />
was concerned about was snaps<lb />
Just once did that concern<lb />
manifest itself, but even that play<lb />
turned out well for the Pirates,<lb />
who seemed to do no wrong<lb />
in the first half as they built a<lb />
24-7 lead.<lb />
Already up, 17-7, following<lb />
touchdown runs by Fractious<lb />
and Simmons, the Pirates were<lb />
set up with a second-and-goal at<lb />
the Virginia 5. Pinkney, who hit<lb />
Good down the sideline for a 44-<lb />
yard gain two plays prior, had the<lb />
shotgun snap from1 Butler nearly<lb />
go over his head. The 6-3 senior<lb />
quarterback tipped the ball up<lb />
in the air, turned his back to the<lb />
defense to catch the ball, and then<lb />
scrambled his way to the end zone.<lb />
Pinkney, who was 17-of-30<lb />
for 224 yards with no touchdowns<lb />
or interceptions, played like "a<lb />
veteran quarterback" according<lb />
to Virginia head coach Al Groh,<lb />
while Holtz said he "managed the<lb />
game well<lb />
"I give him a lot of credit, he<lb />
stepped up and made some plays<lb />
when his team needed him to<lb />
Groh said following the game.<lb />
"That's what senior quarterbacks<lb />
usually do<lb />
Virginia's quarterback, red-<lb />
shirt freshman Jameel Sewell<lb />
struggled and was not helped out<lb />
by his receivers, who dropped<lb />
several passes. Sewell finished the<lb />
game l5-of-31 for 123 yards and<lb />
a touchdown while getting sacked<lb />
three times.<lb />
"We put a lot of emphasis on<lb />
(sacks) this week and we knew we<lb />
had to get back there said fresh-<lb />
man defensive end Scotty Robin-<lb />
son, who recorded his second sack<lb />
of the season. "We just got the<lb />
looks that we wanted<lb />
Pinkney was sacked three<lb />
times as well by the Cavaliers.<lb />
(2-4), but the senior main-<lb />
tained his composure and was<lb />
helped by a ground game that<lb />
consistently gave him manageable<lb />
third downs.<lb />
Many times the pressure<lb />
on Pinkney came from the left<lb />
guard position, Holtz said in his<lb />
postgame press conference, but<lb />
most of ECU's runs were to the<lb />
left as well.<lb />
"We started a true freshman<lb />
at left guard and that's what we<lb />
had to do to move Matt Butler<lb />
in Holtz said. "You know he's<lb />
gonna make some mistakes, but<lb />
I thought, for him to go in and<lb />

weekend. The Pirates beat UAB<lb />

After losing four of their<lb />
first five conference games, the<lb />
Pirates earned a hard fought win<lb />
over the Blazers (33-31, 27-30,<lb />
30-27,30-21). After a close Sunday<lb />

champion Marshall, UAB fell to<lb />

Junior outside hitters Kelley<lb />

Senior setter Heidi<lb />

STAFF WRITER<lb />
It was cold, wet and rainy;<lb />
but after last weekend's failure<lb />
to generate almost any offense<lb />
at all, the Pirates (6-5-2, 1-1-1<lb />
C-USA) seemed to find their<lb />
shot beating Marshall 5-0 on<lb />
Friday afternoon.<lb />
It was the fourth shutout of<lb />
the season for goalkeeper Amber<lb />
Campbell, as Rob Donnenwirth's<lb />
team moved into a tie for seventh<lb />
place in Conference USA.<lb />
"I believe we gave a solid effort<lb />
for all 90 minutes today Donnen-<lb />
wirth said after the game.<lb />
Even with a solid effort, the<lb />
Pirates got off to a slow start,<lb />
trailing the Thundering Herd 4-3<lb />
in shots in the first half.<lb />
In the second half, the tempo<lb />
changed on a Jami Dickerson<lb />
header into the top of the netting<lb />
in the 58th minute. Five minutes<lb />
later, senior Tara Shaw found<lb />
passes from Sarah Kirkley and<lb />
Patty Pierce. Shaw's fourth goal<lb />
of the year is a career-high.<lb />
Freshman Apry Szilard scored<lb />
twice (77th and 84th minute) and<lb />
sophomore Madison Keller added<lb />
her first score of the season in the<lb />
closing minutes. The Pirates out-<lb />
shot the Thundering Herd 13-6 with<lb />
nine of those being shots on goal.<lb />
The Pirates' win sent Marshall<lb />
(4-6-1, 0-3-0 C-USA) towards<lb />
the basement of C-USA with six<lb />
games remaining.<lb />
"Thej result is really hard<lb />
to swallow said Marshall Head<lb />
Coach Chris Kane on the team's<lb />
Web site. "I am disappointed with<lb />
how we react when we fall behind.<lb />
The players really need to find it<lb />
within themselves now and ask<lb />
some serious questions<lb />
Donnenwirth was extremely<lb />
pleased with his teams effort.<lb />
"Our girls came out ready to<lb />
go, you know from the beginning<lb />
of the game, they were pretty<lb />
fired up Donnenwirth said. "Give<lb />
Marshall credit for battling with<lb />
us, for making it difficult for us in<lb />
the fust half"<lb />
Some of that credit also needs<lb />
to go to the Pirate defense. The<lb />
backfield is tied for second in<lb />
C-USA in goals allowed per<lb />
game (.77) and second overall<lb />
in goals against average per<lb />
game (.72). Sophomore goal-<lb />
keeper Amber Campbell is among<lb />
the conference's leaders in goals<lb />
against average (.76) and save<lb />
percentage (.839).<lb />
Freshman Sarah Kirk-<lb />
ley notched three assists and is<lb />
tied for second in C-USA with<lb />
seven assists and alone in assists<lb />
per game (64). Freshman Amy<lb />
Szilard is tied with Shaw for the<lb />
team lead in goals scored with<lb />
four. The Pirates have out scored<lb />
their opponents 16-4 in the second<lb />
half this season.<lb />
The Pirates will play host<lb />
to UCF on Friday at 4 p.m. and<lb />
Southern Miss at 1 p.m. Sunday.<lb />
