Students able to exchange tickets online<lb />
A student utilizes Tixology to purchase tickets. The site was created to allow students to exchange tickets online.<lb />
Expulsion: The facts and myths<lb />
Know how to prevent<lb />
getting expelled from<lb />
college<lb />
Tixology finds success<lb />
through Facebook<lb />
ELISA BIZZOTTO<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Here at ECU, it is a rare occa-<lb />
sion when students who want to<lb />
attend a football game simply<lb />
cannot because they are without<lb />
a ticket. However, at schools such<lb />
as Virginia Tech, Texas and Ohio<lb />
State, that have top-ranked teams<lb />
and extensive student bodies, stu-<lb />
dents often find themselves down a<lb />
ticket to their school's games simply<lb />
because of unfortunate luck in a<lb />
ticket lottery.<lb />
David Gentzel and Nathan<lb />
Jones, both Virginia Tech graduates<lb />
and both rather familiar with the<lb />
disappointment that accompanies<lb />
bad luck when it comes to digging<lb />
for tickets, took it upon themselves<lb />
to create a medium that would allow<lb />
students a better chance at obtain-<lb />
ing tickets for the next big game.<lb />
Tixology, as they dubbed their<lb />
new Web site, was once called<lb />
faceTIX. It is an extension of Face-<lb />
book and is centered around the<lb />
site's successful social networking<lb />
system. Genztel and Jones saw the<lb />
opportunity to utilize the casual<lb />
atmosphere amongst the online<lb />
friend circuit and take advantage<lb />
of the efficiency with which com-<lb />
munication takes place.<lb />
The site was designed to make it<lb />
easy for students to exchange tick-<lb />
ets, thus the way in which it works<lb />
is very simple. Students, or recent<lb />
alumni, can access the system free<lb />
of charge through their Facebook<lb />
login. Once at the site, users have<lb />
different portals to choose from.<lb />
Users can post extra tickets they do<lb />
not need, post requests for tickets<lb />
they do need or post tickets which<lb />
they would like to swap for others.<lb />
c The site also offers a listing of the<lb />
S upcoming events at students' schools<lb />
as well as past postings. There is a<lb />
n messaging center, which allows<lb />
" users to communicate person-<lb />
8 ull which will soon be supported<lb />
through the messaging system<lb />
within a user's Facebook account to<lb />
allow an even greater opportunity<lb />
for efficient exchange.<lb />
Before creating Tixology,<lb />
Gentzel and Jones were well aware<lb />
that there were other sites that<lb />
offered the same facilitation with the<lb />
distribution and exchange of tickets<lb />
such as eBay and StubHub. However,<lb />
they recognized the connections<lb />
between people through Facebook.<lb />
They noticed that because almost all<lb />
communication within the system<lb />
takes place between friends, the<lb />
chances of successful exchange<lb />
would be greater.<lb />
They saw that the relation-<lb />
ships between friends on the site<lb />
were very casual and users would<lb />
be more likely to offer extra tickets<lb />
or request them online than they<lb />
would be to ask students they see<lb />
once a week in English class. In<lb />
addition, they believe the site will<lb />
minimize ticket scalping in that it<lb />
encourages all exchanges to either<lb />
be free or for tickets to be sold at<lb />
their regular price.<lb />
The two launched the site Aug.<lb />
22 and saw well over 1,000 ticket<lb />
transactions among over 150 schools<lb />
in the first two weeks. Tickets for<lb />
the Ohio State vs. Texas game were<lb />
available, among many others, and<lb />
the site seems to have obtained the<lb />
kind of following Facebook did<lb />
when it first launched.<lb />
Gentzel and Jones are geared<lb />
toward picking up a following at<lb />
schools with big football programs<lb />
at the moment, but later on in the<lb />
year, they hope to expand to schools<lb />
with large basketball programs and<lb />
soon.<lb />
"Ideally, we'd like to have a<lb />
pretty solid base at around 20<lb />
schools with hundreds of tickets<lb />
posted for each event. In short,<lb />
we want to be students' first stop<lb />
in their quest for college tickets<lb />
said Gentzel, "We've seen positive<lb />
results at a number of places, and<lb />
we'll keep searching for others in<lb />
hopes of helping students get to as<lb />
many games as possible<lb />

Repeat drug, alcohol offenses are cause for removal from the university.<lb />
KIMBERLY BELLAMY<lb />
SENIOR STAFF WRITER<lb />
There are various different<lb />
reasons why students could get<lb />
expelled or suspended from the<lb />
university that students should be<lb />
aware of and avoid.<lb />
Grounds for expulsion or<lb />
suspension at some universities<lb />
is suicide, which ECU doesn't<lb />
support.<lb />
After a student committed<lb />
suicide at MIT her freshman<lb />
year, many universities began to<lb />
suspend or expel students to avoid<lb />
a lawsuit.<lb />
In that suicide incident, known<lb />
as the Shim case, the university<lb />
knew that the student was suicidal<lb />
and didn't inform her parents. The<lb />
parents sued the university.<lb />
Under the Family Educa-<lb />
tional Rights and Privacy Act<lb />
of 1974, theStiiversity was obli-<lb />
gated to withhold that infor-<lb />
mation from the parents.<lb />
ECU is also obligated to hold<lb />
this type of information, but instead<lb />
of suspending or expelling the<lb />
student, ECU will try to give the<lb />
student counseling to prevent the<lb />
student from attempting suicide.<lb />

No service for many in<lb />
need on Monday<lb />
ZACK HILL<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
A fiber optic equipment failure at<lb />
a switching station in Rocky Mount<lb />
brought down 911 lines across east-<lb />
ern North Carolina Monday night<lb />
leaving many residents with partial<lb />
or no 911 service.<lb />
Noel Lee, Pitt County Emer-<lb />
gency Management director, said<lb />
he had heard estimates of eleven<lb />
counties affected, but Lenoir County<lb />
Emergency Services director Roger<lb />
DajJ said that Embarq phone com-<lb />
pany representatives had informed<lb />
him of thirty-eight counties that<lb />
were affected.<lb />
The outage started in Pitt<lb />
County at 6:30 p.m. on Monday<lb />
night. By 10:30 p.m partial service<lb />
had been restored and by 11:30<lb />
Embarq employees had service<lb />
completely restored.<lb />
"Everything is back up and<lb />
running at one hundred percent<lb />
said Lee.<lb />
Adam Scarboro, an E.R. nurse<lb />
at Pitt County Memorial Hospital,<lb />
said signs were placed in the emer-<lb />
gency room telling employees to<lb />
redirect calls to the emergency room<lb />
to another, seven-digit emergency<lb />
number.<lb />
"It's usually hectic in there, but<lb />
it definitely wasn't as busy said<lb />
Scarboro.<lb />
Brian Brantley, director of Nash<lb />
County Emergency Sevices, said<lb />
that for a time, both the 911 service<lb />
and the seven-digit service were<lb />
out. Incoming emergency calls were<lb />
routed to the Rocky Mount city<lb />
911 service and then transferred by<lb />
radio to the county office.<lb />
Service has since been restored<lb />
to all areas affected.<lb />

City of Greenville, ECU collaborate on new initiative<lb />

LEE SCHWARZ<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
West Greenville, the area<lb />
between Evans and Memorial and<lb />
from Arlington to the Tar River,<lb />
is the object of a new initiative<lb />
by the City of Greenville aimed<lb />
at providing the residents of this<lb />
area with greater resources in<lb />
terms of safety and education.<lb />
To accomplish this objective,<lb />
a partnership has been created<lb />
between ECU Chancellor Steve<lb />
Ballard and Greenville Mayor<lb />
Don Parrott. The city, with the<lb />
help of a private foundation, will<lb />
purchase the former St. Gabri-<lb />

Luther King Jr. Drive from the<lb />
Catholic Church. ECU's Col-<lb />
lege of Human Ecology will run<lb />
an Intergenerational Center to<lb />
serve west Greenville Residents.<lb />
Of the partnership and pur-<lb />
chase, Parrott said, "We have<lb />
worked so hard to provide more<lb />
resources for west Greenville.<lb />
It's great to see the ongoing ful-<lb />
fillment of the two city council<lb />
goals: Form effective partnerships<lb />
and help revitalize the neighbor-<lb />
hood. I hope this will provide the<lb />
stabilizing force that St. Gabri-<lb />
el's provided for so many years<lb />
"We are excited to partner<lb />
with the City in this project to<lb />
enhance the progress already<lb />
under way in west Greenville.<lb />
ECU is a strong believer in<lb />
partnerships, and this could be<lb />
one of our best said Ballard.<lb />

(AP)Medical and nurs-<lb />

sity will receive $280 million<lb />
from the Duke University Health<lb />
System to help fund education<lb />
projects for the next decade,<lb />
the school announced Tuesday.<lb />
The money, along with interest,<lb />
will be used to research health<lb />
disparities that contribute to dis-<lb />
eases such as HIV and diabetes,<lb />
methods of diagnosis and treat-<lb />
ment, and biological processes<lb />
that could help scientists better<lb />
understand how diseases occur.<lb />
"Duke is one of the nation's lead-<lb />

and in developing innovative<lb />
ways of treating cancer, heart<lb />
disease and many other medi-<lb />
cal problems said Dr. Victor J.<lb />

at the university and president<lb />
and CEO of the health system.<lb />
"To continue that tradition of inno-<lb />

nurses and scientists who are the<lb />
most skilled in their fields, and<lb />
we need to support research that<lb />
leads to discoveries that transform<lb />
science and save lives he said.<lb />
"This new funding will help us<lb />
to foster an environment at Duke<lb />
where researchers can follow their<lb />
instincts and take risks. History<lb />
has taught us that breakthroughs<lb />

(AP)With a flu pandemic inevi-<lb />

professionals must prepare now<lb />
for what could be wrenching<lb />
moral decisions about who will be<lb />
treated and who won't if the illness<lb />
overwhelms hospital resources,<lb />
members of a state task force said.<lb />
The Task Force on Ethics and<lb />
Pandemic Influenza Planning met<lb />
recently to discuss a strong set of<lb />
ethical guidelines for the state's<lb />
doctors and nurses in the event<lb />
of a global outbreak of a new and<lb />
more virulent strain of flu virus.<lb />
The first is to assure that crucial<lb />
functions of society aren't dis-<lb />
rupted. That means giving priority<lb />
for vaccines and anti-viral medica-<lb />
tion to health care workers, police,<lb />
firefighters and employees of<lb />
critical industries such as utilities.<lb />
The panel also has drafted recom-<lb />
mendations about the movement of<lb />
people during a pandemic, includ-<lb />
ing the use of quarantine and<lb />
the closing of schools, churches<lb />
and other mass gatherings.<lb />
"We're up here at 30,000 feet<lb />

statements, but nobody's going to<lb />
read a paper like that he said.<lb />

continued from Al<lb />

well being, individual health, and<lb />
also considers what type of envi-<lb />

If the student is staying on<lb />

roommate may also experience<lb />

someone who is in this type of<lb />
psychological mindset.<lb />
When asked if ECU should also<lb />
expel students that are suicidal,<lb />
Olszewska said, "I don't feel like<lb />
suspending or expelling someone<lb />
is best solution for the situation<lb />
Olszewska also stated that<lb />
counseling may not provide much<lb />
help because if a person is truly<lb />
suicidal, there isn't much someone<lb />
else can do to alter their decision.<lb />
One of the main ways that a<lb />
student could be in danger of get-<lb />
ting expelled is for drug charges.<lb />
According the disciplinary actions<lb />
listed in the student handbook,<lb />
drug charges relating to Schedule<lb />
I or II drugs are the most serious<lb />
charges that will result in expulsion<lb />
or suspension from the university.<lb />
Schedule I drugs include<lb />
heroin, LSD, peyote, mescaline,<lb />
psilocybin, or "shrooms" and vari-<lb />
ous other drugs.<lb />
Schedule II drugs included<lb />
morphine, Demerol, codeine, per-<lb />
codan, cocaine and other similar<lb />
drugs, according to the student<lb />
handbook.<lb />
According to Margaret Olsze-<lb />
wska, associate director of office<lb />
of student rights and responsibili-<lb />
ties, possession of Schedule I and<lb />
II drugs and repeat alcohol drug<lb />
offenses are the main grounds for<lb />
expulsion or suspension.<lb />
Other universities take a sim-<lb />
ilar stand on the disciplinary<lb />
actions that should be taken about<lb />
drugs and alcohol, but the policies<lb />
they have for a student attempting<lb />
suicide is very different.<lb />
If you know anyone that is in<lb />
danger of committing suicide or<lb />
abusing alcohol or drugs, contact<lb />

Not just for Pirate Rants <lb />
Not quite the<lb />
dead-end job<lb />
Teaching Fellows are an asset to ECU<lb />
ELIZABETH LAUTEN<lb />
CONTRIBUTING WRITER<lb />
I'm pleasantly surprised with the Teach-<lb />
ing Fellows on campus and their responses<lb />
in defense to this past Thursday's Pirate<lb />
Rants against them. I have received a stag-<lb />
gering number of Rants from current Teach-<lb />
ing Fellows over the past few days and it<lb />
is refreshing to see these students truly<lb />
believe in what they are doing and to have<lb />
both the tact and class to react maturely.<lb />
With that said, I must say that I have to<lb />
agree with them - by no means is teaching a<lb />
dead-end job. Teaching is in fact the profes-<lb />
sion that readies all other professions. With-<lb />
out the dedication of teachers, where would<lb />
any of us be? Not at ECU, that's for sure.<lb />
Moreover, there is an extreme need for<lb />
teachers in the state of North Carolina,<lb />
which is why the Teaching Fellows program<lb />
exists to begin with. Without dedication<lb />
from students such as the Teaching Fellows,<lb />
the state would be in a crisis for educators.<lb />
So, instead of bashing their efforts, their<lb />
amazing scholarship and the opportunities<lb />
that they no doubt worked hard to earn, we<lb />
should applaud them for pursuing a job that<lb />
requires long hours, extreme patience and<lb />
a never-ending love of learning.<lb />
Few students put as much effort into<lb />
their degree as they do, and ECU should<lb />
recognize the promise that they're making<lb />
to our youth of tomorrow.<lb />
Behavior issues<lb />
relevant to ECU<lb />
BENJAMIN CORMACK<lb />
OPINION WRITER<lb />
I've been working on many stories lately<lb />
revolving around issues of students, laws and<lb />
consequences. I've talked to citizens, city offi-<lb />
cials, school officials, police officers and so'<lb />
many others that my head is still spinning.<lb />
The consensus and overall theme that I saw<lb />
was that character should account for academic<lb />
status. Meaning that how you behave should<lb />
affect whether you're still able to go to school.<lb />
Now I'm not going to rehash issues I already<lb />
covered in my news article, but what I can tell<lb />
you is that these new changes in state laws are<lb />
going to be brutal.<lb />
I think a lot of people in our age group<lb />
believe that if you get in trouble, there is a<lb />
chance that you can .get out of it by plead-<lb />
ing youthful recklessness. From the looks of<lb />
things that's no longer going to cut it anymore.<lb />
You can also forget about the variable "three<lb />
strikes" people usually assume they have.<lb />
The question that comes to my mind is why<lb />
is this happening? Are law enforcers like the<lb />
District Attorney just tired of having to deal<lb />
with so many cases? Or are people just becom-<lb />
ing increasingly out of control?<lb />
My biggest question, or my biggest concern,<lb />
has been about how ECU feels about behavior<lb />
affecting a student's status. I gathered that<lb />
ECU does in fact impose a behavior-based<lb />
policy for academic status. Believe me when I<lb />
tell you that if you get in trouble at a football<lb />
game, it may be your last. Too many drinking<lb />
tickets, and you may find yourself with a lot<lb />
more free time.<lb />
I'm going to be honest and say that my feel-<lb />
ings about this issue do come from a personal<lb />
experience. I've lost friends, good, stand-up<lb />
guys, because of poor academics, and I've seen<lb />
students that party hardy and somehow main-<lb />
tain a successful GPA. I can't help but think<lb />
that is just not right. For the longest time I<lb />
thought it was because academics meant more<lb />
to ECU than character, and in a way, I think<lb />
that still appears to be the case. However, based<lb />
on what I've learned student character issues<lb />
are just now becoming more out in the open.<lb />
ECU's view on it hasn't really changed.<lb />
The biggest problems come when nobody<lb />
is willing to make reports. The truth of the<lb />
matter is that authorities within ECU aren't<lb />
afraid to carry out or enforce punishments; it's<lb />
just that they can't do it without facts. Making<lb />
anonymous reports, which many officials<lb />
say they get, isn't enough to start an inves-<lb />
tigation. They need a person who is serious<lb />
enough about their claim to make it in person.<lb />
I know I'm probably not making much<lb />
sense, but that's only because there are some<lb />
things I either can't or don't want to talk<lb />
about. My only advice to you is that public<lb />
safety and tranquility is becoming a big issue,<lb />
and you need to know what changes are being<lb />
made in the law and what the unchanged laws<lb />
are. Finally, if you know something, then you<lb />
need to come forward about it. School and<lb />
public safety are important issues, and there<lb />
are going to be a numerous amount of tough<lb />
laws coming in effect to preserve it.<lb />

Tuesday sucked! I got up at 7 a.m<lb />
threw a shirt on backwards and<lb />
crawled to Java City just to find<lb />
out that their espresso machine is<lb />
busted. Stumbled to class half blind,<lb />
because I forgot my sunglasses, just<lb />

Gotta love ECU life.<lb />
Ex-girlfriends suck! Just break up<lb />

I only have about three friends here<lb />
but they're quality. Those three can<lb />
brighten any bad day, like today. I<lb />

refuse to stop it. So please don't<lb />
give into the stereotypes linked<lb />
from a few bad apples of the Greek<lb />

order before you rant.<lb />
Am I supposed tocallout my roommate<lb />
who I think stole 20 bucks from me?<lb />
Why does there have to be so much<lb />
cruelty in this world? The shooting<lb />
that happened in Lancaster County,<lb />

Don't buy a puppy or a kitten and<lb />
then give it away a week later! Those<lb />
animals need homes and a family.<lb />
They're not a little toy you can play<lb />
with and then throw away when<lb />
you're done with it.<lb />
I'm starting to believe "southern<lb />
hospitality" is a myth. I am from the<lb />
north, and I have never experienced<lb />
the amount of catty girls and<lb />
chauvinistic guys as down here in<lb />
the south.<lb />
Why do some people feel the need<lb />
to say "It smells in here" when they<lb />
enter a bathroom? Of course it<lb />
smells. It's a bathroom.<lb />
Statistically, there are 61 percent<lb />
females and 49 percent males here<lb />
at ECU, but why can't I find one<lb />
girl that is an actual down to earth<lb />
individual?<lb />
Girls go to the bathroom in groups<lb />
for safety measures; you never<lb />
know which stall will be out of toilet<lb />
paper and you are left stranded.<lb />
Why was there an add for Playboy<lb />
wanting ECU girls, and a classified<lb />
ad wanting female dancers? ECU'S<lb />
turning into the whoremonger<lb />
school rather than the party school.<lb />
For all of those that want to reform<lb />
smokers and state facts that we<lb />
already know and threaten a non<lb />
smoking campus take a look at<lb />
the school bylaws. Fifteen percent<lb />
of all of the all ECU buildings<lb />
are supposed to be allocated for<lb />
smoking facilities. Don't push us<lb />
or we'll push back.<lb />
What is it with people thinking that<lb />
just because you're at ECU, you<lb />
didn't get into UNC or Duke? ECU<lb />
was my first choice, not my backup!<lb />
For your information, I have a screw<lb />
in my knee and am supposed to<lb />
avoid stairs and that's why I use<lb />
the elevator. So, before you judge<lb />
maybe for once you should get all<lb />
the info before you judge people.<lb />
Why is it that whenever a girl says<lb />
that your shirt is cute, we all go out<lb />
and buy a dozen more like it, only<lb />
to have her change her mind about<lb />
it the next day?<lb />
Why can't on-campus housing be paid<lb />
monthly? A lot more people would<lb />
join the program if there was not an<lb />
up front cost of over 1,000 dollars.<lb />
Why is it that no one ever stops to<lb />
appreciate the fact that the janitors<lb />
always keep the bathrooms well<lb />
stocked with toilet paper? You<lb />
never realize how much you need<lb />
it until you're left stranded. So, we<lb />
salute you janitorial staff, because<lb />
without you this world would be a<lb />
very uncomfortable place.<lb />
Is it wrong to use a complete dork as<lb />
an excuse to go up and talk to a girl at<lb />
a party? If it is, my karma is doomed.<lb />
So how exactly are you supposed to<lb />
get the smell out of your dorm? No<lb />
amount of airfreshener seems to help.<lb />
There's nothing funnier than seeing<lb />
a freshman crying because they got<lb />
a drinking ticket. It's not funny that<lb />
they got a ticket but it is funny that<lb />
their parents are going to take away<lb />
Sarah Bell<lb />
Editor in Chief<lb />

All I have to say is, "Don't hate me<lb />

Why exactly do they keep charging<lb />
us to print stuff off in the library?<lb />
I paid five grand a semester, and<lb />
they still find ways to suck the few<lb />
remaining dollars out of my wallet.<lb />
Why can't the busses go to more<lb />
places in Greenville? I want to go see<lb />
a movie without having to wait six<lb />
months before it comes to Hendrix.<lb />
Why is it that you can't buy jack<lb />
with the meal equivalencies at<lb />
any place on campus? I'm sorry,<lb />
but three dollars isn't enough to<lb />
fill me up.<lb />
What happened to the pizza at<lb />
Mendenhall? I'm tired of hiking all the<lb />
way to the Galley for the good stuff.<lb />
Why is it that whenever I lie straight<lb />
to a girl's face they believe me, but<lb />
whenever I'm telling them the truth<lb />
they don't?<lb />
I wish my suitemate would finally<lb />
get the courage to talk to a girl all<lb />
by himself.<lb />
Attention all Greeks and Non-<lb />

could make to support ECU is to<lb />
actually wear purple and gold on<lb />
game days. You dress like it's a<lb />
fashion show, but someone didn't<lb />
tell you that "Pirate" is in this season.<lb />
Why is it that there is never<lb />
any hot water in Umstead on<lb />
the third floor? I've taken cold<lb />
showers for the past two weeks,<lb />
and supposedly, the hot water<lb />
heater has been fixed, and it takes<lb />
almost five minutes for the water<lb />
to be at the minimum lukewarm.<lb />
On one hand, I loathe the fraternity<lb />

Banning birth<lb />
control to<lb />
prevent abortion<lb />
Yes, it sounds like a stupid idea to me too<lb />
STACY DAIL<lb />
OPINION WRITER<lb />
"Contraception is more the root cause of abor-<lb />
tion than anything else This brilliant statement<lb />
was said by Joseph Scheidler, an anti-abortion<lb />
activist who sponsored a conference last week to<lb />
help start the movement of outlawing birth control<lb />
and other contraceptives.<lb />
If you're like me, I'm sure you are thinking<lb />
what kind of drugs is this guy on to blame abor-<lb />
tion on birth control, something that is 99 percent<lb />
effective to make sure a baby isn't even conceived.<lb />
This idea makes sense to him, as well as the<lb />
other 250 people from all over the nation who<lb />
attended the conference. The reasoning behind<lb />
this idea is because birth control devalues children,<lb />
and produces unhealthy relationships between men<lb />
and women because it helps to promote sex and<lb />
other "promiscuous" activities.<lb />
Just because a person takes birth control<lb />
because they do not want to have a baby doesn't<lb />
represent an idea that children are under appre-<lb />
ciated or unwanted, it just shows that the person<lb />
is responsible and understands that they are not<lb />
ready for children at this point in their life.<lb />
Many women have been contemplating what<lb />
they will name their kids ever since they were<lb />
littie girls, and these same women are currently on<lb />
birth control. This may be a shocker to Joseph and<lb />
his groupies, but planning for kids in the future,<lb />
while presently protecting yourself from getting<lb />
pregnant, isn't devaluing children. It's actually<lb />
protecting them against having a mother who isn't<lb />
prepared, or financially stable enough for them.<lb />
It was also mentioned that birth control<lb />
encourages men and women to have sex, which<lb />
is probably true to a certain extent. Believe it or<lb />
not, humans don't have sex just for the purpose<lb />
of reproduction, and outlawing birth control isn't<lb />
going to stop them from doing the deed.<lb />
We live in a culture where birth control is<lb />
commonly used. Ninety-eight percent of women<lb />
ages 15 to 44 have reported the use of at least one<lb />
method of contraception, and around 40 million<lb />
of those have chosen the option of birth control.<lb />
So, let's just say that this bright idea does<lb />
somehow happen, and they ban birth control and<lb />
other contraceptives. There would be 40 million<lb />
women out there who could be having unsafe sex,<lb />
which could possibly produce 40 million children.<lb />
Some of those women don't want or aren't able to<lb />
handle the responsibility that a child brings, and<lb />
may go to the extent of having an abortion.<lb />
It seems to me that the way to prevent abortion<lb />
would be to prevent unwanted pregnancies, and<lb />
the way to do that would be to make sure birth<lb />
control is available.<lb />
So, are contraceptives really oneof the main causes<lb />
of abortion? The idea just doesn't add up to me.<lb />

Dear Jane,<lb />
There's this girl I'm thinking about asking out<lb />
but I don't know if I should. You see I was oest<lb />
friends with her brother until he passed away in a<lb />
car accident this past winter. Before the incident,<lb />
lie expressed that he didn't want me to date his<lb />
slightly older sister whom I met after meeting<lb />
him. I still like her and now that their family has<lb />
returned home I want to start a relationship,<lb />

also want to keep my best friend's wishes. What<lb />
should I do?<lb />

Dear Wants to Do the Right Thing,<lb />
First of all, my condolences to you in the<lb />
loss of your friend. Chances are your friend<lb />
most likely had concerns about you dating his<lb />
sister because of the impact it could have on<lb />
your friendship. I'm sure ne didn't want to ever<lb />
nave to choose between you, his best friend<lb />
and thee possibility of you breaking his sister's<lb />
heart (worst-case scenario). Unless you know of<lb />
another reason he had for forbidding this rela-<lb />
tionship, I don't think it should be an issue now<lb />
as long as you and the young lady in question<lb />
are on the same page in terms of grieving and<lb />
being ready for a romantic relationship. Think<lb />
of it this way: You've experienced the loss of<lb />
someone you both loved; it might actually make<lb />
you closer. If the family doesn't mind and you<lb />
have the best intentions, I don't think you'd be<lb />
dishonoring his memory or his request. Your<lb />
and her happiness are wnat matters now.<lb />

Let the lottery games begin<lb />
What the N.C. lottery<lb />
funds<lb />
SHANNON DAVIS<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
In August 2005, Gov. Mike<lb />
Easley signed into law the North<lb />
Carolina State Lottery Act and the<lb />
2005 Appropriations Act, which<lb />
endorsed the North Carolina Edu-<lb />
cation Lottery. North Carolina<lb />
became the 42nd state and the<lb />
last state on east coast to have a<lb />
lottery program.<lb />
The net proceeds are broken<lb />
down into three sections of edu-<lb />
cation. Fifty percent of the total<lb />
is to be used for reduction of<lb />
class size ratios in early grades<lb />
to 18 children per teacher and<lb />
for pre-kindergarten programs<lb />
for at risk young children. Forty<lb />
percent of the total will be used for<lb />
school construction. Roughly 65<lb />
percent of this 40 percent will be<lb />
distributed to each county based<lb />
on total school enrollment. The<lb />
remaining 35 percent of this total<lb />
will be distributed to each county<lb />
with average effective county<lb />
property tax rates above the<lb />
state average based on total school<lb />
enrollment. Finally, 10 percent<lb />
of the total is used for college<lb />
scholarships for students who<lb />
qualify for the federal Pell Grant.<lb />
These scholarships can be used<lb />
at North Carolina public and<lb />
private universities and commu-<lb />
nity colleges.<lb />
Interestingly enough, built<lb />
into the lottery law is a provi-<lb />
sion that sets aside one million<lb />
dollars for the state's Depart-<lb />
ment of Health and Human<lb />
Services each year to pay for<lb />
gambling addiction treatment<lb />
and education, which may come<lb />
as a cruel irony for some lottery<lb />
participants.<lb />
Heather Swaim, a junior<lb />
family and community services<lb />
major, expressed her outlook<lb />
about the lottery by stating, "My<lb />
opinion is that it is a good thing<lb />
because it brings money into<lb />
the public education systems in<lb />
North Carolina. The downfall to<lb />
it is that it teaches children and<lb />
youth about gambling at a young<lb />
age since the lottery is in almost<lb />
every gas station you go into<lb />
Sophomore psychology<lb />
major, Erica Myers said, "I<lb />
think that the North Carolina<lb />
Education Lottery is definitely<lb />
a good thing because it brings<lb />
money back to North Carolina<lb />
plus the money goes to help<lb />
better schools so they will have<lb />
a better learning environment<lb />
for students<lb />
The North Carolina Edu-<lb />
cation Lottery might be seen<lb />
by state officials as a godsend<lb />
for public education, but it is<lb />
already becoming a frustra-<lb />
tion for some school officials<lb />
in poorer parts of the state.<lb />
If you want to support<lb />
the North Carolina Educa-<lb />
tion Lottery, visit just about<lb />
any local gas station and pay<lb />
cash for your ticket. North<lb />
Carolina, like most other states,<lb />
will not allow patrons to buy<lb />
lottery tickets with credit<lb />
cards because this can create<lb />
debt. All lottery partici-<lb />
pants are encouraged not to<lb />
habitually buy lottery tickets<lb />
and never spend more than they<lb />
can afford.<lb />

Cancer prevention week<lb />
Mid-week seminar<lb />
to educate<lb />
AARON BORREGO<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
It recently has come to my<lb />
attention that this week is cancer<lb />
prevention week here at ECU. In<lb />
order to find out<lb />
more, I got in<lb />
touch with<lb />
Georgia<lb />
Childs, the<lb />
Assistant<lb />
Director<lb />
of Campus<lb />
Wellness, in<lb />
the hopes of<lb />
being able to shed some light upon<lb />
this week's activities.<lb />
Campus Recreation and Well-<lb />
ness, along with the Healthy<lb />
PIRATES, will be hosting Cancer<lb />
Prevention Week October 2-6.<lb />
"Breast Cancer Fairies" and "Ball<lb />
Boys" will be out in front of the<lb />
Student Store on Wednesday<lb />
from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. educat-<lb />
ing students about Breast and<lb />
Testicular Cancer.<lb />
A nurse from Student Health<lb />
will be available to talk with<lb />
students and will help students<lb />
learn how to conduct breast and<lb />
testicular self-exams. I know in<lb />
years past they have had models of<lb />
the regions to efficiently show you<lb />
how to examine yourselves.<lb />
There will be giveaways and<lb />
raffles for students to enter as<lb />
well. Now that everyone knows<lb />
about the event, let's exam-<lb />
ine a few quick facts about the<lb />
two cancers.<lb />
Testicular cancer is the most<lb />
common cancer in young men<lb />
between the ages of 15 and 35<lb />
years old. However, one would be<lb />
wise to note that this cancer can<lb />
and will strike any male, at any<lb />
time. Even so, testicular cancer is<lb />
curable if it is found early enough.<lb />
Most testicular cancers are<lb />
found by men themselves, either<lb />
in testicle hardening, a painless<lb />
lump, a change in size of the testicle<lb />
or pain in the testicle. Testicular<lb />
cancer can be treated with surgery,<lb />
radiation therapy, chemotherapy,<lb />
surveillance or a combination of<lb />
these treatments.<lb />
Breast cancer has many risk<lb />
factors, so I will only be able to<lb />
get into a few. A personal history<lb />
of breast cancer or some non-can-<lb />
cerous breast diseases is a very<lb />
big indicator of potential breast<lb />
cancer risk. A family history of<lb />
breast cancer, particularly in a<lb />
mother, daughter or sister, could<lb />
lead to some indication of risk.<lb />
If there is evidence of a spe-<lb />
cific genetic defect upon<lb />
the genes BRCA1BRCA2,<lb />
which regulate cell growth, this<lb />
raises the probability of a serious<lb />
risk for cancer. Women who carry<lb />
defects on either of these genes<lb />
are at greater risk for developing<lb />
breast cancer. A Gail Index score<lb />
of at least 1.7 percent indicates a<lb />
viable assessment of risk to this<lb />
cancer as well. The Gail Index<lb />
uses risk factors such<lb />
as age, family his-<lb />
tory of breast cancer, age<lb />
of first menstrual period<lb />
and first pregnancy and<lb />
number of breast biopsies to<lb />
calculate a woman's risk of<lb />
developing breast cancer<lb />
within the next five years.<lb />
So as you see, this is no laugh-<lb />
ing matter and should be taken very<lb />
seriously. If your friends, whether<lb />
a guy or girl, or if you mother or<lb />
father are too embarrassed to go do<lb />
something like this for themselves,<lb />
get them out there and let<lb />
them know the risk. Bring it up<lb />
even if it is just so you know<lb />
the family heredity risk factor<lb />
for yourself. I hope all of you<lb />
check it out, it could be a<lb />
lifesaving opportunity.<lb />

R.A.D. program to ensure safety of ECU students<lb />
Teaching self-defense<lb />
to students that may<lb />
one day save a life<lb />
STACY DAIL<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
The ECU Police Department<lb />
has announced that it will be offer-<lb />
ing R.A.D a program targeting<lb />
female students to inform them<lb />
about rape and other offenses, as<lb />
well as teaching them self-defense.<lb />
R.A.D, Rape Aggression<lb />
Defense, is a nation-wide self-<lb />
defense training class for women.<lb />
Students are taught basic and<lb />
realistic self-defense tactics by<lb />
nationally certified instructors<lb />
who have been trained specifically<lb />
for the class.<lb />
Whether or not students are<lb />
physically fit isn't an issue when<lb />
taking the class. Women ofall ages,<lb />
ability and strength are encour-<lb />
aged to participate and will be<lb />
taught techniques to defend them-<lb />
selves, and also other information<lb />
that they can use in every day life.<lb />
RAD. trains students to<lb />
make quick, smart decisions when<lb />
put in a bad situation where a<lb />
lot of women would panic, leav-<lb />
ing themselves vulnerable to<lb />
attack or rape.<lb />
The program isn't martial<lb />
arts based, but is meant to help<lb />
women develop physical and<lb />
non-physical tactics when<lb />
put in a bad situation.<lb />
At the beginning of the course,<lb />
students receive a manual that is<lb />
used for reference and practice.<lb />
This manual gives pointers involv-<lb />
ing things such as a look at the mind<lb />
of an attacker, and small but effi-<lb />
cient ways of preventing an attack.<lb />
Once the course is complete,<lb />
each student's manual will be<lb />
signed, which guarantees them a<lb />
free lifetime membership with the<lb />
R.A.D. program, allowing them to<lb />
return whenever they would like<lb />
for practice with an instructor.<lb />
R.A.D. has become a popular<lb />
program because of its simplicity<lb />
and easy to learn methods. It is<lb />
being used throughout many uni-<lb />
versities all over the nation, as well<lb />
as Canada, and is applauded for its<lb />
unique teaching methods.<lb />
Nationally, the program has <lb />
over 7,000 instructors who teach<lb />
at various colleges, universities,<lb />
law enforcement agencies and<lb />
other community organizations.<lb />
The program, which was started<lb />
in 1989, has reached more that<lb />
300,000 women and that number<lb />
is continually growing.<lb />
R.A.D. is the only self-<lb />
Women practice self-defense techniques together in a program much like the R.A.D. program coming to ECU.<lb />
defense program that is endorsed<lb />
by the International Associa-<lb />
tion of Campus Law Fnforce-<lb />
ment Administrators, and also the<lb />
only program that offers a free<lb />
lifetime membership along with a<lb />
practice policy.<lb />
In the month of September<lb />
there has been over 70 reports<lb />

Project road-trip: Greensboro I My Broths my roommate<lb />
A taste of the<lb />
mildly-wild West<lb />
JENNY AYERS<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Once deemed the "Gateway<lb />
City" for its potential to be a gateway<lb />
to the South, these days Greensboro<lb />
can at least be seen as a gateway<lb />
to a Greenville getaway. The two<lb />
towns may be named for the same<lb />
general but, apart from a surplus<lb />
of college students and restaurants,<lb />
that's about all they have in common.<lb />
Greensboro isn't quite the metropo-<lb />
lis that is Charlotte but there's more<lb />
than enough going on to make it<lb />
worth the three hour trek.<lb />
F"irst and foremost, there's<lb />
the food. As Greensboro is home<lb />
to a diverse community, there are<lb />
endless options when it comes to<lb />
dining. One of my favorite spots is<lb />
Bianca's, an Italian eatery located<lb />
near UNCG. If you love food<lb />
the way I do, this is an excellent<lb />
choice because it is very moder-<lb />
ately priced ($10-12 dollars an<lb />
entre) and every meal comes<lb />
with an appetizer, salad, bread<lb />
and dessert. It also helps that the<lb />
food is excellent.<lb />
If Italian isn't hitting the spot<lb />
then there's always Yum Yum's, a<lb />
quaint ice cream and hot dog res-<lb />
taurant located right across from<lb />
UNCG's campus. They are known<lb />
not only for their tasty hot dogs<lb />
and fries, but also for their dessert<lb />
- homemade ice cream. This place<lb />
is sure to fit in the FXU student's<lb />
budget at an average of four dol-<lb />
lars a meal.<lb />
In the historic section of down-<lb />
town you'll find another one of my<lb />
favorite spots, Ritchy's Uptown<lb />
Restaurant & Bar where they<lb />
serve something for everyone.<lb />
The food there is excellent and<lb />
the fun atmosphere doesn't hurt<lb />
either. If your budget will allow,<lb />
the fondue cuisine of The Melting<lb />
Pot is also a popular and appetiz-<lb />
ing option. There are also Thai.<lb />
Vietnamese, French and Greek<lb />
restaurants to choose from.<lb />
Whatever you're in the mood for,<lb />
Greensboro has it and it's just a<lb />
matter of finding it and squeezing<lb />
it all into one weekend.<lb />
When you're not busy eating,<lb />
there are lots of other things<lb />
Downtown Greensboro has plenty<lb />
of interesting architecture.<lb />
to occupy your time. The kid in<lb />
all of us can appreciate Celebra-<lb />
tion Station where you can play<lb />
bumper boats, mini-golf, ride the<lb />
go-carts or stay inside and play<lb />
in the huge arcade. There are also<lb />
mechanical animals that randomly<lb />
pop out of the wall and sing coun-<lb />
try tunes, if you can handle it.<lb />
For those that are more athleti-<lb />
cally inclined than myself, there's<lb />
The Ice House, a skating rink<lb />
located near Wendover Avenue. If<lb />

BENJAMIN CORMACK<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
While some students come<lb />
to ECU having no idea who<lb />
their roommate is going to<lb />
be, there are those who know<lb />
their roommates extremely<lb />
well. The latter is especially<lb />
true when they're family.<lb />
Students at ECU sometimes<lb />
request to be roommates with<lb />
their siblings, and Campus<lb />
Living says that they are willing<lb />
to accommodate them.<lb />
According to Aaron Lucier,<lb />
Associate,Director for Campus<lb />
Living for Housing, these kinds<lb />
I of situations are treated just like<lb />
any other roommate request.<lb />
"As long as they met the<lb />
deadline said Lucier. "We accept<lb />
roommate request Tor the Fall<lb />
up until May 1. So if they got<lb />
accepted at ECU and put each<lb />
other down as roommates, they<lb />
would get placed together<lb />
Aside from his work and<lb />
experience in Campus Housing,<lb />
Lucier comes from a family of<lb />
five brothers and sisters him-<lb />
self and therefore has some<lb />
idea what the pros and cons of<lb />
having a sibling as a roommate<lb />
can be.<lb />
"Part.of the experience that<lb />
we hope to provide students,<lb />
particularly in their first year<lb />
in housing, are an experience<lb />
of getting along with somebody<lb />
that may be from a different<lb />
background. Therefore, living<lb />
maybe with the same brother<lb />
that you've lived with for the<lb />

BROTHER<lb />
continued from A4<lb />
of two roommate in his college<lb />
career and enjoyed being by<lb />
himself for the iast couple of<lb />
years, neither of the brothers<lb />
dreaded their parents' idea of<lb />
them living together.<lb />
Matt's worries about coming<lb />
to school were finding buildings<lb />
and his classes. Mike then showed<lb />
his brother around, helping Matt<lb />
to figure out the infamous build-<lb />
ing codes on his schedule, telling<lb />
him about various school clubs<lb />
and going with him to meetings.<lb />
The Guzman brothers agree<lb />
that their parents' wanting them<lb />
together was more a way for Mike<lb />
to take care of and look out for<lb />
Matt and to make sure he got to<lb />
class. While Mike thinks that at<lb />
first Matt needed that kind of care,<lb />
it gradually became something<lb />
Matt didn't need all the time.<lb />
In the past few years, the<lb />
Guzman brothers feel they've<lb />
had to move around more than<lb />
average. With the closing of Slay<lb />
and the requirement changes in<lb />
Umstead, the Guzman broth-<lb />
ers say that their ability to stay<lb />
together came from the help of<lb />
their friends. It was because they<lb />
had friends in Umstead that they<lb />
were able to reserve space for<lb />
themselves when Slay closed,<lb />
and eventually got resituated so<lb />
that they were once again in the<lb />
same room together. When the<lb />
rules for Umstead changed, they<lb />
had to find an apartment and<lb />
call on the help of their friends<lb />
once again.<lb />
"They took both of the good<lb />
dorms away said Mike. "There<lb />
wasn't any good point to living<lb />
on campus anymore<lb />
The Guzman brothers say<lb />
they like living in an apartment<lb />
more than the dorms because<lb />
of benefits like more room and<lb />
better food from cooking their<lb />
OWll meals. The biggest challenge<lb />
of off-campus living, they say, is<lb />
being able catch the bus.<lb />
They alternate various house<lb />
duties, but each deal with their<lb />
own laundry. They both feel that<lb />
it is easier to organize and sort<lb />
out such duties with a family<lb />
member than it would be if they<lb />
were living with someone else.<lb />
Mike and Matt say that they<lb />
get along better than most broth-<lb />
ers, having similar interests and<lb />
like doing a lot of the same things<lb />
together.<lb />
"How many brothers can say<lb />
that?" Mike asked.<lb />
However, they are not without<lb />
their differences.<lb />
"I'm more of a loner<lb />
Matt stated.<lb />
"I like trying to get out more<lb />
with my friends Mike said.<lb />
They even shared one funny<lb />
story about a time Matt tried to<lb />
boil water in a glass bowl on the<lb />
stove, citing his love of pasta as<lb />
the cause for his lack of judgment.<lb />
"That was pretty stupid<lb />
Matt laughed.<lb />
Of course the brothers don't<lb />
see themselves living together on a<lb />
permanent basis, but they will look<lb />
back fondly on their time together.<lb />
"I have somebody to help me<lb />
out, I have somebody to hangout<lb />
with so I'm not always alone<lb />
here Mike said, even if that<lb />
person is his brother.<lb />

GREENSBORO<lb />
continued from A4<lb />
you're looking for a laugh. The<lb />
Comedy Zone never fails to pro-<lb />
vide classic entertainment. If you<lb />
decide to go there, be sure to call<lb />
ahead and make reservations, just<lb />
to be on the safe side. Also, if you<lb />
go to the Comedy Zone, after the<lb />
show you can step next door (for<lb />
a discounted price) and check out<lb />
Arizona Pete's where they have<lb />
live bands every night, line-danc-<lb />
ing and a mechanical bull.<lb />
If you enjoy live music, check<lb />
out Greene Street located down-<lb />
town. Last weekend they hosted<lb />
Anberlin and Far-Less along with<lb />
some local NC. bands. In a couple<lb />
of weeks you can catch Alexison-<lb />
fire. Not far from there you'll find<lb />
The N Club which doubles as a<lb />
venue and a nightclub.<lb />
On the larger scale there's<lb />
the Coliseum where you can find<lb />
all sorts of live entertainment.<lb />
For instance, Barney Live will<lb />
be coming for only twenty dol-<lb />
lars a person - which is quite the<lb />
bargain. If you're not that in tune<lb />
with your inner child. The Produc-<lb />
ers v also be there this weekend.<lb />
In a couple of weeks you can see<lb />
Nick Lachey in concert or, if that<lb />
isn't your style, Guns 'n Roses will<lb />
be performing at the beginning of<lb />
November. Again, Greensboro has<lb />
something for everybody.<lb />
Perhaps one of the best aspects<lb />
of the city and the thing that<lb />
truly separates it and Greenville<lb />
is the amount of shopping that<lb />
can be found there. Greensboro's<lb />
mall, Four Seasons Town Centre-<lb />
is home to ISO specialty stores<lb />
and three department stores<lb />
and is located conveniently off of<lb />
1-4085. There's also Friendly<lb />
Center, a 75 acre open shopping<lb />
center that is home to Macy's,<lb />
Belk, Sears, Old Navy and many<lb />
more. Near this shopping center<lb />
is Wendover Avenue where you'll<lb />
find Mecht's and Kohls. You will<lb />
certainly have a lot to show for<lb />
your trip, although it may mean,<lb />
coming back to Greenville broke.<lb />
With a variety of restaurants,<lb />
stores and extracurriculars to<lb />
choose from, Greensboro has a<lb />
lot to offer the college student.<lb />
Whether you just need to get<lb />
away from the stress of school or<lb />
take a break from the bubble that<lb />
is Greenville, another world is<lb />
only three hours away. Great food,<lb />
music, laughs and shopping are all<lb />
some things you can take away<lb />
from a getaway to Greensboro.<lb />
But be prepared for what it's going<lb />
to take from you, your money.<lb />

Like father, like son<lb />
Steve and Kort<lb />
Shankweiler share<lb />
football bond<lb />
RON CLEMENTS<lb />
SENIOR WRITER<lb />
Steve Shankweiler said he and<lb />
his wife tried to maintain a "low<lb />
profile" during their son, Kort's,<lb />
college recruitment process. The<lb />
J.H. Rose quarterback was being<lb />
courted by five schools in the<lb />
summer of 2001. The "Shanks" had<lb />
spent significant time in Greenville<lb />
while Kort was growing up, but it<lb />
was Steve's two-year absence while<lb />
Kort was already enrolled at ECU<lb />
that Dad said was "the most dif-<lb />
ficult time" his family has endured.<lb />
"It was a situation w here, he as<lb />
the son of a coach, and your dad<lb />
was let go, and now you've got<lb />
to create a loyalty to a guy that<lb />
didn't keep him said Steve, the<lb />
current offensive coordinator and<lb />
offensive line coach at ECU.<lb />
"It was a very difficult thing<lb />
for him and our family, but that's<lb />
why I'm so proud of him. The way<lb />
he overcame it and the way he<lb />
would never ever say a negative<lb />
word. That told me that he had a<lb />
lot more special about him than<lb />
I did. He had every reason to say<lb />
this isn't for me, but he sucked it<lb />
up and handled the situation a lot<lb />
better than I did<lb />
Coach Shankweiler left ECU<lb />
following the 2002 season to<lb />
become the offensive line coach<lb />
at Cincinnati following the resig-<lb />
nation of then head coach, Steve<lb />
Logan. The Shanks spent just<lb />
one season with the Bearcats<lb />
before heading to South Carolina<lb />
to accept a lateral position under<lb />
Steve Spurrier.<lb />
"For the first time in Patty<lb />
and mine's married life that our<lb />
children were out of the house;<lb />
all of sudden we're out of town<lb />
Coach Shankweiler said.<lb />
Despite the coaching change,<lb />
Kort remained at ECU, a place he<lb />
chose because of his familiarity<lb />
with the city of Greenville and the<lb />
ECU campus.<lb />
"When you live somewhere<lb />
for five years, you get comfortable<lb />
with the place said Kort. "Know-<lb />
ing that coaching staff and the<lb />
town and people that were in it, it<lb />
just felt like a good place<lb />
The6-foot-2, 231 pound senior<lb />
history education major said he<lb />
used the time apart from his par-<lb />
ents to launch his independence.<lb />
"When I got the chance to<lb />
move out, I moved out Kort said.<lb />
"I got my own place and live with<lb />
a couple of other guys. I go home<lb />
every now and then, but it's not<lb />
really my home' home<lb />
Kort's maturity and judgment<lb />
are things that his dad were able<lb />
to see five years ago, which is why<lb />
he and his wife let their son make<lb />
his own decision about where to<lb />
attend college.<lb />
"I really tried to stay out of<lb />
it. I tried to be just a dad and his<lb />
mother tried to be just a mother<lb />
Steve said. "We took him to cam-<lb />
puses and let him see for himself<lb />
during the summer. He wanted to<lb />
make his decision before his senior<lb />
year. We kind of let the process<lb />
take care of itself<lb />
Being on the staff at the time,<lb />
both Shankweilers said they<lb />
trusted Coach Logan and recruit-<lb />
ment director Jerry McManus to<lb />
"do it right<lb />
"One day he grabbed Coach<lb />
Logan and said, 'Hey, Coach<lb />
Logan, I got something to tell<lb />
you. This is where I want to go to<lb />
school Steve recalled. "He's been<lb />
blessed, or cursed, being the son<lb />
of a coach, in that he's been a lot<lb />
of places. He's seen the 100,000<lb />
seat stadiums. The awe factor was<lb />
not going to be a big deal for him.<lb />
Knowing that, we could sit back a<lb />
bit because we knew he was going<lb />
to make a mature decision<lb />
The former all-conference<lb />
quarterback, who threw for 1,200<lb />
yards and 11 touchdowns as a<lb />
senior at Rose, said he is comfort-<lb />
able with the fullback position<lb />
after being switched there by the<lb />
Thompson staff in 2004.<lb />
"It's different Kort said.<lb />
"You're not used to going in there<lb />
and banging heads with 250-<lb />
pound guys, but it's something<lb />
that I've adjusted to<lb />
His dad never had a doubt that<lb />
he could play another position.<lb />
"I knew when he came here<lb />
that we did not want to recruit<lb />
a quarterback that could not go<lb />
play another position Steve said.<lb />
"I knew that when Kortj made<lb />
the choice to move, I knew that if<lb />
that's what he really wanted to do<lb />
that he would find plenty of play-<lb />
ing time, and he has. It's really<lb />
worked out well<lb />
ECU has a history of high<lb />
school quarterbacks that end up<lb />
playing other positions, and the<lb />
2006 Pirates are no exception<lb />
with 10 former high school signal<lb />
callers now playing other positions<lb />
on both sides of the ball.<lb />
If the younger Shankweiler,<lb />
who is the youngest of three and<lb />
the only son, has a question about<lb />
his position or the offense, he<lb />
doesn't turn to Dad.<lb />
"Usually Coach junior Smith<lb />
w ill lias the answers for me Kort<lb />
said. "So I don't really have to go<lb />
harping to my father or Coach Shank<lb />
all the time. I just talk to Coach<lb />
Smith and he always helps me out<lb />
Off the field, the two try to<lb />
leave work at work, but still chat<lb />
about the game.<lb />
STEVE SHANKWEILER<lb />
"We talk a little bit of football<lb />
Kort said. "But it's nothing specific<lb />
about this school or anything. Just<lb />
talk about other games. This stuff<lb />
out here usually stays out here. We<lb />
talk about football because that's<lb />
something we both love<lb />
Whether on or off the gridiron,<lb />
the son sees similarities between<lb />
Steve Shankweiler, the father, and<lb />
Steve Shankweiler, the coach.<lb />
"He always harps on the same<lb />
things Kort said. "Be a leader,<lb />
make sure you do the right thing,<lb />
he doesn't let you get away with<lb />
stuff, always taught me to show<lb />
respect to everybody and go up<lb />
and shake somebody's hand and<lb />
be an example<lb />
Coach Shankweiler said he<lb />
is proud of how his son has han-<lb />
dled the pressures of being a<lb />
coach's son.<lb />
"One of the hardest things<lb />
in the world is to be the son of a<lb />
coach Coach Shank said. "Those<lb />
kids with dads as coaches have<lb />
such high expectations put on<lb />
them, so they have to go a little bit<lb />
above and beyond what everybody<lb />
else has to do to get on the field.<lb />
KORT SHANKWEILER<lb />
I'm really proud that he's fought<lb />
his way through that and is con-<lb />
tributing as much as he is<lb />
Getting his son that playing<lb />
time to contribute is a different<lb />
kind of pressure for Dad to bear.<lb />
"You kind of have to separate<lb />
being a dad from being a coach<lb />
Steve said. "It's hard for me to say<lb />
I think he's better than that kid.<lb />
You do when you need to, but you<lb />
gotta make sure that everybody<lb />
else in the room sees that. You<lb />
gotta make sure that he has really<lb />
earned that<lb />
While an NFL career for Kort<lb />
is unlikely, a career in football and<lb />
keeping with the family business<lb />
is something the 23-year-old w ill<lb />
strive for.<lb />
"I'm gonna try to get into<lb />
coaching Kort said. "It's some-<lb />
thing he tries to talk me out of just<lb />
about every other day because of<lb />
the hardships that go along with<lb />
it. I've been around it just about<lb />
all my life and it's something<lb />
that I love<lb />

Perhaps you've heard of the<lb />
Swimming and Diving team as the<lb />
best team on campus This season<lb />
will mark the 24 non-losing<lb />
season for the Pirates, which starts<lb />
this Thursday at 3:00 p.m. with the<lb />
Purple & Gold meet. It will tie the<lb />
school record for most consecutive<lb />
winning seasons.<lb /><lb />
Last year the women's squad<lb />
went 10-1 when they lost by 5<lb />
points to Virginia Tech and the<lb />
men were 6-3, both finishing<lb />
second in the Conference Cham-<lb />
pionship. Along with the stun-<lb />
ning team performances, 24 of the<lb />
East Carolina swimmers became<lb />
all-conference. Last year some<lb />
swimmers also set CUSA records,<lb />
Bryan Yasinac set three records,<lb />
Christopher Lubenau had an<lb />
incredible five records, Greg<lb />
Neville has set two, and Matt<lb />
Donahue set three records. For the<lb />
diving team Ryan Hunt also set a<lb />
new record for the three-meter dive.<lb />
After a recuperating summer,<lb />
the Pirates first two weeks are<lb />
nothing but running, lifting<lb />
weights, and swimming. Before<lb />
the season starts the whole team<lb />
participates in a biathlon where<lb />
they swim two miles, run three<lb />
miles around the track, run back<lb />
to the pool and swim another<lb />
mile. During the season though,<lb />
the team spends twenty hours<lb />
a week with three to four hours<lb />
dedicated to lifting and the rest<lb />
spent in the pool. The swimming<lb />
and diving teams also meet every<lb />

JAREDJACKSON<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Chris Belfiore, the sophomore<lb />
star on the cross country and track<lb />
team has been through a lot in the<lb />
past couple of weeks. He is battling<lb />
injury, recent ineligibility, and his<lb />
roommate and neighbor were vic-<lb />
tims of a crime.<lb />
Early in the morning on Tues-<lb />
day, Sept. 19, Belfiore and his room-<lb />
mate William Collins heard a loud<lb />
popping sound. When they went<lb />
outside to explore the source of the<lb />
noise, they found Collins's Mazda<lb />
Tribute on fire. Two nights later,<lb />
the same thing happened, only to<lb />
Belfiore's neighbor James Writh.<lb />
Writh happens to be a professor.<lb />
Left at the bottom of the door steps<lb />
at Belfiore's house were the words<lb />
"wrong house sorry<lb />
"The person at our house that<lb />
got his car caught on fire is actu-<lb />
ally on the track and cross country<lb />
team as well said Belfiore. "It's my<lb />
roommate, Will Collins. We were<lb />
actually high school rivals, but ended<lb />
up going to the same university and<lb />
being housemates. We're real good<lb />
friends now. It's crazy, it sucks it hap-<lb />
pened to him, it sucks it happened at<lb />
all. Anybody that would do that has<lb />
a screw loose<lb />
"It turns out I guess, they we're<lb />
trying to target our neighbors,<lb />
because our neighbors are profes-<lb />
sors. I figure maybe it was someone<lb />
they gave a bad grade too. It's been<lb />
pretty hectic<lb />
I then asked Belfiore how the<lb />
whole event has afTected his life and<lb />
mainly how his nights have been<lb />
after having been woken up to burn-<lb />
ing cars twice in a three-day span.<lb />
"Well, the first night it happened<lb />
like at 3:30 or 4 in the morning, and<lb />
by the time the police, fire depart-<lb />
ment, and investigators left it was<lb />
probably 6:30. So, we went and got<lb />
breakfast. Some of us came back and<lb />
slept because we didn't have class<lb />
until later<lb />
"The next night we stayed there<lb />
and everything was fine. The fol-<lb />
lowing night it happened again, but<lb />
this time it happened at about 2 in<lb />
the morning. It was just me and my<lb />
roommate Drew that were there and<lb />
we saw the paint and stuff on our<lb />
front doorstep. That kind of freaked<lb />
us out, so we went and stayed with<lb />
BELFIORE<lb />
some other teammates. We just<lb />
didn't want to be there that night<lb />
Belfiore is also nursing an injury<lb />
that could keep him sidelined until<lb />
the C-USA championships. The<lb />
championships will be held in<lb />
Greenville on Oct. 28.<lb />
"To get better, all I can do<lb />
is give it time. It's not like an<lb />

THE EAST CAROLINIAN SPORTS<lb />
PAGE A"<lb />
SWIMMING<lb />
dedication.<lb />
"The team is supposed to be<lb />
as good if not better than last<lb />
year said Coach Rick Kobe. This<lb />
season the Swimming and Diving<lb />
team are bringing in thirteen<lb />
freshmen swimmers, to add to the<lb />
already dominate returning class.<lb />
The men's squad could be one of<lb />
the best ECU teams to compete.<lb />
But, they will have to face rivals<lb />
Duke (Jan. 27) away, Virginia<lb />
Tech (Jan. 13) at home, and UNC<lb />
Wilmington (Jan. 14) at home,<lb />
which should provide impressive<lb />
swimming and diving.<lb />
Coach Rick Kobe has three<lb />
things on his mind for this upcom-<lb />
ing season, "Our goal every year<lb />
is to go undefeated, win the con-<lb />
ference championship, and have<lb />
a 3.0 team GPA The swim<lb />
and dive team have come close<lb />
before accomplishing two of the<lb />
continued from A6<lb />
three goals on a regular basis.<lb />
The team's GPAs are extremely<lb />
good. Last season the women were<lb />
around a 3.1 GPA while the men<lb />
were around a 2.9 GPA. This year<lb />
the teams is going for the triple<lb />
crown, trying to put in that little<lb />
extra effort to be the very best and<lb />
go undefeated and win the con-<lb />
ference championship. Hopefully<lb />
this year will be better than last<lb />
year, but it will be difficult with<lb />
the loss of 10 seniors to gradu-<lb />
ation. The women pirates lost<lb />
key elements in their time with<lb />
Courtney Felker (Sprint Free),<lb />
Lauren Harvard (Backstroke),<lb />
Lucy Hicks (Diving), Abbey<lb />
Hillen (Diving), Sarah Hunt<lb />
(BreaststrokeMiddle Distance),<lb />
Jackie Royce and Kelly Shinton<lb />
(IM Breaststroke), Adrienne Wil-<lb />
liams and Holly Williams (Sprint<lb />
FlyBackstroke). The men's team<lb />
won't have such large shoes to<lb />
fill in, since they only lost one<lb />
diver to graduation, Robbie Derr.<lb />
This year the Pirate divers<lb />
couldn't look any better. Return-<lb />
ing from last year are Ryan Hunt<lb />
and Christie Icenhower who made<lb />
their NCAA Zone meet. Rebecca<lb />
Perry also made the NCAA<lb />
swim meet.<lb />
The 2006-07 season will<lb />
begin this Thursday with some<lb />
competition against itself, in<lb />
the Purple & Gold meet at the<lb />
Minges Aquatic Center. Their<lb />
first full competition will be<lb />
against Davidson on October 12<lb />
at 12:00 p.m. The swimming and<lb />
diving team will also be attending<lb />
the Nike Cup, which is an invita-<lb />
tional tournament only, on the<lb />
weekend of November 16-18. Last<lb />
year a couple of swimmers quali-<lb />
fied for the U.S. Open which is to<lb />
be held on Nov. 30- Dec. 2.<lb />
The fall 06-07 season for<lb />
swimming and diving marks<lb />
an historic event for this school.<lb />
One that is sure to bring broken<lb />
records and championship tro-<lb />
phies back to ECU. The teams<lb />
needs your support and want<lb />
you to be there every swim meet.<lb />
Remember Pirate fans, ECU<lb />
swimming and diving have been<lb />
champions in 99-00 season, 00-01<lb />
season, and 02-03 season. Coach<lb />
Rick Kobe also won his 850 win<lb />
last year. So don't forget to catch<lb />
those Pirates with gills in their<lb />
first home meet against Davidson<lb />
on the 14th in the Minges Aquatic<lb />
Center. For more information on<lb />

BELFIORE<lb />
continued from A6<lb />
fiore. "I got strep throat, so I<lb />
wasn't doing a whole lot of run-<lb />

practice because I was kind of<lb />
quarantined for a while. For all<lb />
that having happened, I wasn't<lb />
too disappointed with my times<lb />
Belfiore is also an essential<lb />
runner to the track and field team<lb />
as he is to the cross country team.<lb />
He is really optimistic and look-<lb />
ing forward the upcoming season.<lb />
"We have some really good kids,<lb />
said Belfiore. We have some kids<lb />
that we're nationally ranked in high<lb />
school that are up here now. We were<lb />
young last year and we did well. I<lb />
think we're going to do awesome in<lb />
track. I got high hopes for track<lb />
Belfiore was then asked where<lb />
he thought the track and field team<lb />
could end up in C-USA this season.<lb />
"Third of fourth realistically<lb />
is what we should be shooting for.<lb />
UTEP and Houston ate the pow-<lb />
erhouse teams, but I say, the crown<lb />
won't stand for long with the way<lb />
we are improving<lb />
Belfiore also wanted to stress<lb />
the need for fan support.<lb />
"We could defiantly use some<lb />
fan support said Belfiore. "We<lb />
don't get a whole lot of people that<lb />
come out to the races. We go to<lb />
the swim meets, and the volleyball<lb />
matches. We've been to tennis<lb />
matches, and defiantly the football<lb />
and baseball games. We're big sup-<lb />
porters and it would be great to get<lb />
a little bit back. We'll actually be<lb />
hosting the conference champion-<lb />
ships this year, so if we could get<lb />
some pirates out there to just chant<lb />
and cheer, it would be great<lb />

Bowden: Wake<lb />
Forest losses took<lb />
him close to "hell"<lb />
(AP) Clemson coach<lb />
Tommy Bowden is a devout<lb />
Christian who can quote a Bible<lb />
verse as quickly as a scheme in<lb />
the Tigers' play book. Still, he<lb />
can't help thinking evil thoughts<lb />
about Wake Forest.<lb />
Demon Deacons coach Jim<lb />
Grobe "has probably taken me<lb />
closer to hell than I ever want<lb />
to go Bowden said.<lb />
The 15th-ranked Tigers<lb />
(4-1, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Confer-<lb />
ence) are off to their best start in<lb />
five years. But they've lost two of<lb />
their past three games to Wake<lb />
Forest (5-0, 1-0) both at Groves<lb />
Stadium, where this Saturday's<lb />
game takes place.<lb />
In 2003, Wake's stunning<lb />
45-17 victory, the Demon Dea-<lb />
cons led 45-0 to start the fourth<lb />
quarter, brought Bowden a fire-<lb />
storm of discontent that nearly<lb />
cost him his job. Rumors about<lb />
Bowden's departure took hold<lb />
of the campus and fans, and<lb />
Bowden was confronted by a<lb />
reporter the Sunday after the<lb />
lopsided loss asking if the coach<lb />
had resigned earlier that day.<lb />
While Clemson rallied with<lb />
four huge wins to finish 9-4 and<lb />
Bowden gained a contract exten-<lb />
sion through 2010, he hasn't let<lb />
go of that turbulent time. "It<lb />
stays as a reminder he said.<lb />
Things were less dramatic<lb />
last fall, yet just as bitter.<lb />
This time, Wake Forest took<lb />
a 21-0 lead and survived Clem-<lb />
son's late rally for the 31-27 vic-<lb />
tory. The Tigers, then 2-3 after<lb />
the defeat, again responded with<lb />
a flourish and ended with six<lb />
wins in their final seven games.<lb />
The comebacks, though,<lb />
don't take away from what hap-<lb />
pened in those losses, Bowden<lb />
and his players say. How does<lb />
Wake do it?<lb />
"I've been asking myself the<lb />
same thing Clemson offensive<lb />
lineman Marion Dukes said.<lb />
Bowden says his Wake Forest<lb />
counterpart, Grobe, typically<lb />
gets the maximum effort and<lb />
performance from the players he<lb />
has - players sometimes thought<lb />
too undersized or undertalented<lb />
to make a difference in big time<lb />
college football.<lb />
"I just like the style the team<lb />
plays he said. "I just have a lot<lb />
of respect for what he's done<lb />
Wake Forest sticks with its<lb />
option-style attack and performs<lb />
it to perfection, Clemson defen-<lb />
sive coordinator Vic Koenning<lb />
said. "They know their schemes<lb />
and they know what they're<lb />
doing he said.<lb />
Plus, Wake Forest has had<lb />
the quirky plays go its way<lb />
against the Tigers.<lb />
Dukes was a freshman in for<lb />
a few snaps three years ago when<lb />
he missed a block that let defen-<lb />
sive tackle Jyles Tucker literally<lb />
take the ball out of quarterback<lb />
Charlie Whitehurst's hands<lb />
and break away for an 12-yard<lb />
fumble return touchdown.<lb />
Then last year, one ball inter-<lb />
cepted by Wake Forest bounced<lb />
off Chansi Stuckey's legs.<lb />
"You watch and say, 'Areyou<lb />
serious? " Dukes said.<lb />
The defeats have left a per-<lb />
manent impact on Clemson's<lb />
program. Bowden said the 45-17<lb />
loss was one reason he changed<lb />
directions on defense, getting<lb />
rid of then coordinator John<lb />
Lovett in favor of Koenning<lb />
before the 2005 season.<lb />
The players remember too<lb />
well the sick, disgusted feelings<lb />
on the bus tides back to Clem-<lb />
son its past two trips to Wake<lb />
Forest.<lb />
Right guard Nathan Bennett<lb />
described it as dead silent. "That<lb />
was pure pain Bennett said.<lb />
Bennett, a senior, says little<lb />
extra motivation is needed to<lb />
get Clemson ready for this one.<lb />
Beside the Tigers' personal his-<lb />
tory with the Demon Deacons,<lb />
the winner will have an added<lb />
leg up in the ACC's Atlantic<lb />
Division race. Besides, Bennett<lb />
says, "I'd hate to lose to them<lb />
three out of four years and beat<lb />
Florida State three out of four<lb />
In the end, Bowden says<lb />
there no one else to blame for<lb />
his team's Wake Forest failings<lb />
other than himself.<lb />
"I know with us, it looks like<lb />
on Saturday, they show up, they<lb />
play hard and they execute<lb />
Bowden said. "And that's where<lb />
Jim Grobe has done a better job<lb />
than 1 have in this particular<lb />
game<lb />
