STAFF WRITER<lb />
The Humane Society of East-<lb />
ern Carolina held its annual Fluff<lb />
'N Puff Dog Wash this past Satur-<lb />
day in the Gold's Gym parking lot<lb />
on Charles Street.<lb />
The non-profit organization<lb />
held the event in a drive to raise<lb />
money to care for currently housed<lb />
animals at the society's facility in<lb />
Greenville.<lb />
Currently in its fifth year, the<lb />
Humane Society establishes a goal of<lb />
attempting to wash at least 100 dogs.<lb />
Dogs that take part in the<lb />
event go through a series of activi-<lb />
ties. First they participate in dog<lb />
art. Paint is put on their paws and<lb />
they walk on a large piece of paper.<lb />
Afterward, dogs are sham-<lb />
pooed, washed and then blow-<lb />
dried. Following that, they have<lb />
their ears cleaned and their nails<lb />

House whip speaks<lb />
to ECU College<lb />

McLawhorn attended ECU in the 1960s, where the political<lb />
environment was such that becoming a part of it was "very exciting<lb />
McLawhorn up for<lb />
reelection in November<lb />
ZACK HILL<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
North Carolina State<lb />
House Representative Marian<lb />
McLawhorn (D) came to Brew-<lb />
ster 102-C Thursday night to<lb />
speak to the college Democrats.<lb />
McLawhorn is from Pitt County<lb />
and is currently seeking a fifth<lb />
.term as the District 9 representa-<lb />
tive. She is being challenged by<lb />
republican Tony Moore.<lb />
"I think she's a very strong<lb />
candidate said David Conradt,<lb />
professor of political science and<lb />
advisor to the college Democrats.<lb />
McLawhorn spoke first on her<lb />
past, including her time at ECU in<lb />
the 1960s.<lb />
"That time to get involved in<lb />
politics for the first time was very<lb />
exciting said McLawhorn.<lb />
She officially began her political<lb />
career when she was elected to the<lb />
Grifton Town Council. Five years<lb />
later, she won the Grifton mayoral<lb />
election and began legislating<lb />
on the state level when she was<lb />
elected to the State House in 1998.<lb />
"I love the legislative part of<lb />
the job McLawhorn said. "1 still<lb />
enjoy trying to help people with<lb />
their problems<lb />
McLawhorn is currently serv-<lb />
ing as the House Majority Whip,<lb />
co-chair of the rules committee,<lb />
co-chair of the education com-<lb />
mittee and chair of the domestic<lb />
violence committee, according to<lb />
her Web site.<lb />
She also was an integral part<lb />
of adding the new cardiovascular<lb />
center at the Brody School of<lb />
Medicine.<lb />
"Now we've got a real fight to<lb />
get a dental school McLawhorn<lb />
said.<lb />
During this year's congressio-<lb />
nal session, McLawhorn and other<lb />
House members passed legislation<lb />
making the annual enrollment<lb />
increase to offset the rising costs of<lb />
college tuition permanent so that the<lb />
funding will no longer require a vote.<lb />
"As ECU and the other univer-<lb />
sities grow, there will be a pot of<lb />
money that comes out to help with<lb />
enrollment McLawhorn said.<lb />
Voting was also an important<lb />
part of McLawhorn's message.<lb />
"I know it sounds trite because<lb />
we talk about it all the time, but<lb />
this is a blue moon election<lb />
McLawhorn said.<lb />
A blue moon election is an<lb />
election in which high visibility<lb />
offices like president, U.S. Senate<lb />
and local sheriff are not on the<lb />
ballot, which can result in a low<lb />
voter turnout.<lb />
"That's why it voting is so<lb />
important McLawhorn said.<lb />
"Every single vote counts.<lb />
I've won four times, but this one<lb />
is close<lb />
McLawhorn told the students<lb />
on hand that she was pleased to<lb />
see young people caring about<lb />
politics.<lb />
"It's very important for people<lb />
to vote anyway, period. It's our<lb />
right and a privilege. It's impor-<lb />
tant for everybody of every age<lb />
to get into the political process<lb />
McLawhorn said.<lb />
College Democrats president<lb />
Erik Anderson, senior history<lb />
and political science major, hopes<lb />
students will take advantage of<lb />
McLawhorn's stop on the cam-<lb />
paign trail.<lb />
"She's asking us to volunteer<lb />
for her said Anderson. "It's good<lb />
experience for young students that<lb />
may be interested in being a part<lb />
of a campaign in the future<lb />

What did you<lb />
think of the e-<lb />
mails from the<lb />
administration<lb />
and expectations<lb />
for students'<lb />
conduct at the<lb />
football game?<lb />
"As college students<lb />
we should be able<lb />
to have fun, but still<lb />
conduct ourselves<lb />
"I thought the e-<lb />
mails didn't really<lb />
reflect what went on<lb />
at the game<lb />
"It's OK to have<lb />
pride, but when it<lb />
crosses a certain line<lb />
it becomes negative<lb />
"They want us<lb />
to keep our good<lb />
sportsmanship<lb />
represented<lb />
"We have a rep for<lb />
being a party school,<lb />
we don't need to add<lb />
to it<lb />
"The e-mail was sent<lb />
more than once, so<lb />
it must have been<lb />
important, but it was<lb />
a little much<lb />

mail out to straighten<lb />

ECU, Memphis game<lb />
sparks conflict<lb />
CLAYTON BAUMAN<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
The ECU, Memphis foot-<lb />
ball game nearly a week and<lb />
a half ago has sparked some<lb />
resentment from visiting fans<lb />
and even some ECU fans.<lb />
After the game, reports of<lb />
rowdy fans and obscene behavior<lb />
in the stands by some of the Pirate<lb />
supportive began to overshadow<lb />
the exciting win over Memphis.<lb />
The ECU athletic department<lb />
began to receive mail from visit-<lb />
ing Memphis fans citing different<lb />
accounts of Pirate fans, yelling,<lb />
cussing and using the middle<lb />
finger around their families.<lb />
In a letter to Athletic Director<lb />
Terry Holland, a Pirate fan wrote<lb />
in his concern about some vulgar<lb />
chanting that took place as well.<lb />
The athletic department<lb />
responded quickly, with both<lb />
Holland, ECU Head Coach Skip<lb />
Holtz and ECU Chancellor Steve<lb />
Ballard, sending out mass e-mail's<lb />
to students and faculty as well<lb />
as apologies to those offended.<lb />

another hour left in the day.<lb />
"We've had everything from<lb />

Monday march to<lb />
Take Back the Night'<lb />
ZACK HILL<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Traffic on 10th Street was<lb />
halted several minutes Monday<lb />
evening as a column of people<lb />
that stretched back nearly to the<lb />
crosswalk halfway up College Hill<lb />
crossed and headed toward Sonic<lb />
Plaza during the "Take Back The<lb />
Night" march. The event was<lb />
sponsored by The Office of Victim<lb />
Services and Someone's Sister, a<lb />
local music group.<lb />
Marchers started gathering at<lb />
the top of College Hill at around 6<lb />
p.m passing out blue bracelets that<lb />
read "Students Against Violence<lb />
At 6:30 p.m the crowd was<lb />
accompanied down College Hill<lb />
by police cars and chants of "yes<lb />
means yes, no means no, whatever<lb />
we wear, wherever we go" and "hey,<lb />
hey, ho, ho, rape has got to go<lb />
Some of the male students were<lb />
asked to wear high heel shoes to,<lb />
as event coordinator Sue Molhan,<lb />
Office of Victim's Services, put it,<lb />
"walk a mile in their shoes<lb />
The marchers, around five<lb />
hundred strong according to<lb />
Molhan, passed through Sonic<lb />
Plaza and settled on the steps in<lb />
front of Joyner Library. Molhan<lb />
welcomed the participants and<lb />
thanked them for their support.<lb />
She also reminded them why they<lb />
were there, saying, "Sexual assault<lb />
is the most unreported crime in<lb />
the country. That's why it's called<lb />
the silent epidemic<lb />
Two students spoke about<lb />
their personal experiences with<lb />
sexual assault.<lb />
"I bring the you a message of<lb />
empowerment, for no one deserves<lb />
to be raped, molested or sexually<lb />
assaulted she read.<lb />
It was her second time speak-<lb />
ing at the annual event.<lb />
Members of the ECU Police<lb />
Department as well as the<lb />
Health Department and Stu-<lb />
dent Health Service were on<lb />
hand to promote the project.<lb />
"I want to support what they're<lb />
doing said Sgt. Jermain Cherry,<lb />
Campus Safety and the ECU<lb />
Police Department.<lb />
SGA President and graduate<lb />
marketing major M. Cole Jones<lb />
echoed Cherry's sentiments.<lb />
"I think it's great to support<lb />
any event for the protection of<lb />
our women on campus and in the<lb />
, community said Jones.<lb />
Someone's Sister performed<lb />
three songs. They cited the<lb />
murder or sexual assault of three<lb />
women in Greenville area in the<lb />
last month as a major concern and<lb />
problem for female students at<lb />
ECU. The last song, dedicated to<lb />
their memory and with the refrain,<lb />
"we're here now, cause they died<lb />
was sung as the candlelight vigil<lb />
ignited near sundown.<lb />
"This is a great way for men<lb />
and women, faculty and staff to<lb />
show we're not going to accept<lb />
sexual assault on campus or<lb />
anywhere said Karen Warren,<lb />
Director of Campus Wellness.<lb />

Not just for Pirate Rants <lb />
Where is the love<lb />
for ECU?<lb />
I'm tired of support for other schools<lb />
AARON BORREGO<lb />
OPINION WRITER<lb />
It has come to my attention that someone wrote<lb />
a rant about how they knew the fight song and<lb />
Alma Mater to a rival North Carolina school and<lb />
not ECU's. It really bothered me because I don't<lb />
know it either.<lb />
Although I don't know any other school's fight<lb />
song, I should at least know that my current school<lb />
does have a fight song and be able to recognize it<lb />
somewhat clearly, right? I find that this is a pretty<lb />
disturbing thought since I am slated to graduate in<lb />
December.<lb />
It made me wonder how many of the other stu-<lb />
dents fall into this same category. I would imagine<lb />
even some of the teachers, who have been here for<lb />
a while, don't know what our Alma Mater and our<lb />
song are. So I ask the question, where is the love for<lb />
our prestigious University?<lb />
This is our Alma Mater "Praise to your ,<lb />
name so fair, Dear old East Car'lina, <lb />
your joys we'll all share, and your friends we'll ever<lb />
be We pledge our loyalty, and our heart's devotion,<lb />
To thee, our Alma Mater, love and praise<lb />
I feel that I, as a current student, have discourte-<lb />
ously forgot where my loyalty resided by not know-<lb />
ing this. Maybe others have or have not felt the same<lb />
way about this, but at least I am trying to make<lb />
amends by atoning for my ignorant shame.<lb />
This is our fight song titled "E.C. Victory<lb />
"Cheer for East Car'lina, Cheer for old E.C, We know<lb />
we're the finest, Onward to victory! GO PIRATES!<lb />
Cheer for East Car'lina, Cheer on for old E.C,<lb />
Loyal and Bold, We're the purple and gold, we are<lb />
the Pirates of E.C.U<lb />
I know that this may be helpful for us to try to<lb />
know so we can show the rest of the college world that<lb />
ECU is a top-notch school in terms of our overall pride<lb />
for the university. If we want to be looked upon as an<lb />
upper echelon school we should start by supporting<lb />
our cause by knowing such a fundamental statement.<lb />
Our school has gone through transforma-<lb />
tions over its time just like any other school, but<lb />
this one is ours. We should know more about it<lb />
and the beginnings of how it got to where it is<lb />
today and where it will be tomorrow and beyond.<lb />
I am not saying that everyone reading this is as<lb />
clueless as myself about our history as a university,<lb />
but I do find that many are supportive and educated<lb />
about other schools just the same. How is it that last<lb />
year before our ECU and UNC football game, people<lb />
were wearing UNC apparel that attend our college?<lb />
I'm not trying to tell people what to do, but seri-<lb />
ously people who do this, can't you hold off support-<lb />
ing other rival schools from halfway across the state<lb />
to support the school you are currently at even for<lb />
just one week? If not, go to that school instead of here.<lb />
It's cool if you want to support them and all, I'm<lb />
just asking if you can show our school some love too<lb />
and not forget that you are enrolled here at ECU.<lb />
Things aren't always as trivial as wearing clothing<lb />
or supporting a rival school in athletics.<lb />
People need to and are starting to change their<lb />
perception of this school from being a party school<lb />
to a well-rounded prestigious college of higher learn-<lb />
ing. Athletics is a small part of what ECU has to offer<lb />
the world, I understand this, but I just want people to<lb />
be excited about all aspects of this university.<lb />
While no one can question our support at the<lb />
football games, as noted to all students in a series of<lb />
e-mails last week, we can try altogether to improve<lb />
our image as a drunken hick school from nowhere<lb />
North Carolina. People before us and people cur-<lb />
rently are raising the bar of excellence here and we,<lb />
as current students, should promote and carry that<lb />
tradition of excellence onward.<lb />
In closing, I restate that it is cool to support<lb />
whatever college you want, but at least support<lb />
your current school as well. Wear your purple and<lb />
gold shirts and caps with pride to campus, games,<lb />
hometowns and anywhere else.<lb />
Go to games or university outings or do what-<lb />
ever you can to support your school. Just think<lb />
this started about a fight song and a T-shirt and<lb />
became about a mindset seemingly pervading some<lb />
amongst the crowds. Don't forget to come out and<lb />
show the Virginians what pirate pride is all about in<lb />
less than two weeks. Also, don't wear any freaking<lb />
Virginia apparel leading to the game, as it is lame<lb />
and ludicrous.<lb />
JUST ASK JANE<lb />
Need advice? Want answers? Just ask Jane.<lb />
Dear Jane,<lb />
A few months ago my boyfriend and<lb />
I starting fighting a lot and as a result<lb />
we broke up. Since then, we have worked<lb />
out our differences, gotten along great<lb />
as friends and have talked about dating<lb />
again. The only problem is that my friends<lb />
and family told me that they no longer like<lb />
him and don't want me to date him again.<lb />
Any advice?<lb />
Signed,<lb />
Confused<lb />
Dear Confused,<lb />
It's always a tough situation to be in<lb />
when your friends and family disagree<lb />
with you, especially when it comes to<lb />
relationships. You may want to go back<lb />
and reevaluate why you broke up in the<lb />
first place. Are the issues still there? Or<lb />
are they simply hidden by the fact that<lb />
you're no longer in a romantic relation-<lb />
ship with him? Think about why your<lb />
parents and friends don't like him. Do<lb />
they have a point? If they don't have a<lb />
point, try talking to them and explain to<lb />
them that things are resolved. Tell them<lb />
that you really would like to make a fresh<lb />
start with this person and that you would<lb />
appreciate their support.<lb />

So how well do girls have to<lb />
know each other before they<lb />
can use the bathroom together?<lb />
Is it a friendship building<lb />
activity or does it take a while?<lb />
Is it just me or are the only<lb />
people that ride the central<lb />
campus bus fat chicks?<lb />
Maybe I am onto something!<lb />
SGA needs free and fair<lb />
elections from now on. No<lb />
more preferential treatment for<lb />
minorities.<lb />
Dearest ranter, The films<lb />
committee has both MySpace<lb />
and Facebook accounts to<lb />
tell you what movies they're<lb />
showing. They're hip now!<lb />
Man, my parents just don't<lb />
understand me! They grounded<lb />
me because I was wearing<lb />
my sister's jeans last week.<lb />
It's so tough being emo.<lb />
I look forward to Wednesdays<lb />
so I can see all the hot<lb />
ROTC guys in their fatigues.<lb />
Why do people always walk<lb />
around campus wearing their<lb />
UNC, N.C. State, or Duke<lb />
clothes. Have a little pirate<lb />
pride people. I mean if you<lb />
wanted to go there that's<lb />
fine, but you go to ECU, stop<lb />
flaunting other state schools.<lb />
If you do feel the need to wear<lb />
Carolina stuff, at least have<lb />
some class and wear South<lb />
Carolina stuff.<lb />
To the girl who had a rant about<lb />
her nipple hanging out of her<lb />
bra Why don't you buy a<lb />
bigger bra?!<lb />
SGA Elections University<lb />
popularity contest Are we<lb />
still in High School?<lb />
One of my friends never comes<lb />
to class and yet she made a<lb />
higher grade on our first paper<lb />
than everyone who actually<lb />
comes to class. It must be<lb />
nice to be one of ECU's writing<lb />
elite.<lb />
I would just like to give our<lb />
football team a round of<lb />
applause. They put up a great<lb />
fight on Saturday. I want to also<lb />
comment on how awesome our<lb />
dance team, cheerleaders and<lb />
marching band are! Way to go<lb />
Pirates for all your hard work!<lb />
What is the problem with<lb />
our readership program?<lb />
Has anyone else noticed the<lb />
machines are always either<lb />
out of papers or out of order?<lb />
Please keep the newspapers at<lb />
Croatan stocked so I don't have<lb />
to hike all over campus looking<lb />
for a machine with a paper.<lb />
Thank you. I love the news.<lb />
White Protestants in Greek<lb />
organizations are the most<lb />
maltreated group of people<lb />
at ECU. Racism and closed<lb />
mindedness can emanate from<lb />
minority groups and radical<lb />
religions just as easily as<lb />
it can from the supposed<lb />
"establishment<lb />
We have the toughest football<lb />
team in North Carolina by<lb />
far. State loses to Akron,<lb />
Div. I-AA, Duke well Duke is<lb />
Duke, and UNC didn't even<lb />
show up against Clemson and<lb />
should have lost to Furman. Go<lb />
Pirates! Win Out!<lb />
To the girl in my class who's<lb />
always making a scene about<lb />
something, rest-assured that<lb />
nobody in the class likes you.<lb />
You should have left the class<lb />
instead of kicking out that guy<lb />
who did nothing. But don't<lb />
worry, now everyone will be<lb />
nice to you. After all, who<lb />
wants a restraining order?<lb />
ECU should adopt the same<lb />
system of keeping track of<lb />
buses on their routes with<lb />
timers set up at all the stops<lb />
to let commuters know how<lb />
much longer the bus will<lb />
be. Then I wouldn't have to<lb />
wait up to 20 minutes for<lb />
nothing. If you don't know<lb />
what I'm talking about then<lb />
check the News & Observer or<lb />
the East Carolinian (0926),<lb />
I don't remember which.<lb />
I am sick of all the rants<lb />
about smoking and I'm a non-<lb />
smoker. How can someone<lb />
possibly think that encouraging<lb />
someone to do cocaine will help<lb />
' the situation? Do you know the<lb />
side effects of cocaine? Would<lb />
you like some high guy behind<lb />
the wheel of a car instead of<lb />
a smoker, just so you cannot<lb />
smell smoke? You're not saving<lb />
your life that way either. Move<lb />
out of the heart of tobacco<lb />
country if you're such an anti-<lb />
smoking lobbyist, go to New<lb />
York where they have laws<lb />
about it.<lb />
To all the fine boys at the Rec.<lb />
Center: You all need to quit, I'm<lb />
trying to work out.<lb />
OK now look It has<lb />
officially been over two years!<lb />
Get over it and talk to me!<lb />
I have about 50 Pirate Rants in<lb />
my mind, and I can't remember<lb />
them all!<lb />
Where are the good single,<lb />
non-drinking, non-smoking and<lb />
non-sorority girls?<lb />
When I ask you out to dinner at<lb />
least have the common curtsy<lb />
to say no instead of not saying<lb />
anything at all.<lb />
I don't care if you are white,<lb />
black, red or blue, the 'N' word<lb />
should not be used in any type<lb />
of context.<lb />
Every time I see a smoker<lb />
walking in front of me blowing<lb />
their smoke in my face, I have<lb />
an incontrollable impulse to<lb />
grab the cigarette and stick<lb />
it up their So if you're a<lb />
smoker walking in front of<lb />
me, watch out! I'm the one<lb />
with the crazed annoyed<lb />
look on her asthmatic face.<lb />
You know when I'm walking<lb />
down the sidewalk and you're<lb />
just standing there, move.<lb />
Did anyone notice that the<lb />
entire section for West Virginia<lb />
started shouting obscenities,<lb />
unprovoked toward ECU fans?<lb />
I bet we won't be sending a<lb />
letter to their school telling<lb />
them how offensive they are.<lb />
Why do I come to class to have<lb />
you read me the textbook? I<lb />
can do that from the comfort<lb />
of the bed in my room. Don't<lb />
you know that most of the<lb />
people in your class do work<lb />
for other classes in your class?<lb />
Wow SGA really has gone to<lb />
hell ever since I retired - we<lb />
need a slow clap for those guys.<lb />
A 100 question Anatomy<lb />
practical with no word bank?!<lb />
Do I really want to be a nurse?<lb />
Why is it that I always get<lb />
behind the moron putting along<lb />
at 25 mph on Greenville Blvd?<lb />
It's called a gas pedal use it.<lb />
To the girl on the shuttle that<lb />
stares at me everyday yes, I<lb />
am a lesbian. Would you like<lb />
my number?<lb />
Why do people IM me when<lb />
I have an away message up?<lb />
If I have an away message,<lb />
that means I am obviously<lb />
away and I'm not going to<lb />
respond to your IM. Seems<lb />
like common sense to me.<lb />
I can't wait until N.C. Pride<lb />
in Durham this weekend<lb />

Parental priorities<lb />
a bit off key<lb />
Some parents would rather have a good<lb />
time than provide for their children<lb />
JESSE PENCE<lb />
OPINION WRITER<lb />
My parents say that is the job of a parent to do all<lb />
they can to make sure their child has the tools to be<lb />
successful when they get into the "real world They<lb />
have done everything they can, to give me all that I<lb />
need. I plan to do the same for my children and will<lb />
go the ends of the earth to get them all they need.<lb />
How would you feel if it was well within the reach<lb />
of your parents to pay for schooling, but they refused?<lb />
Or even worse, if they refused to pay for school, but<lb />
bought.other luxuries for their own life and made it<lb />
seem like it's a chore for you to be their child?<lb />
Why even have children if you are unwilling to<lb />

remember. I invite him to family weddings and I go to<lb />
his family parties. 1 know all of his family extremely<lb />
well; I just cannot manage to respect his father.<lb />
Jim's dad owns a construction and remodeling<lb />
company that is doing very well, he drives a BMW,<lb />
and has all the luxuries in his home you could ever<lb />
want. He simply refuses to pay for Jim's college<lb />
tuition. "I didn't go to college, and look at where I<lb />
got is his explanation for not paying. Since Jim's<lb />
father does not pay tuition, he leaves it up to his ex-<lb />
wife who works as a hairstylist, and Jim.<lb />
Jim's mom helps him out as best she can, but you<lb />
can imagine the strain it puts on the household between<lb />
bills, household expenses for two kids, plus tuition. I<lb />
would be severely less sore about the whole situation<lb />
if Jim's dad didn't go on lavish vacations each summer.<lb />
On a moments whim (literally, they bought the<lb />
tickets a day before) they will fly to Aruba, the Baha-<lb />
mas or nearly anywhere else. All expenses paid for<lb />
by Jim's father; but he refuses to pay for Jim to go to<lb />
school. See the aggravation?<lb />
It gets better. The vacations that Jim didn't ask<lb />
for then become a debt against him. So does a dinner<lb />
out or any night out where they are together and<lb />
he pays.<lb />
"Dad, I need some money for books<lb />
"I took you to Aruba and out for dinner last night,<lb />
you can manage to get books. You should be thank-<lb />
ing me for taking you So he works his butt off to<lb />
pay for school, expensive rent in downtown Chicago<lb />
near school and anything else he may need. To me,<lb />
Jim's father would rather have a drinking, partying-<lb />
buddy than a son.<lb />
He has all my respect that he works so much and<lb />
is able to keep his grades up. Anyone who works to go<lb />
to school, whether it is out of necessity or not, I have<lb />
a lot of respect for. Unfortunately, Jim's dad doesn't<lb />
get any from me.<lb />
How about these parents stop finding reasons to<lb />
not help out, and be a responsible parent and do what<lb />
they can to make sure their children have the tools to<lb />
be successful. Get your priorities straight already.<lb />
LETTER TO<lb />
THE EDITOR<lb />
This summer I took a Biology<lb />
class at ECU as a visiting student<lb />
from Carolina. Though I expect I'm a<lb />
little spoiled by my home university's<lb />
abundance of green technology, I<lb />
was shocked by ECU's apathy toward<lb />
sustainability. I had assumed that all<lb />
universities were progressive institu-<lb />
tions concerned about environmental<lb />
responsibility, but your alma mater<lb />
proves to be an exception.<lb />
I witnessed most of my classmates<lb />
driving to class, even those living<lb />
within a mile of campus. Not only<lb />
that, but I had to search rigorously<lb />
just to find a recycling bin to put my<lb />
glass and plastic in.<lb />
At the risk of sounding like a snob,<lb />
let me give some quick advice to the<lb />
students of ECU - if you want your<lb />
university to be truly competitive<lb />
with the other prestigious establish-<lb />
ments of America, you will have to<lb />
show more significant commitment<lb />
to the betterment of your commu-<lb />
nity and the world. Take action for<lb />
environmental justice, and begin by<lb />
installing more recycling bins!<lb />

The delights of caffeine<lb />

LIZ FULTON<lb />
SENIOR WRITER<lb />
Red Bull. Coffee from Star-<lb />

like it. The death-<lb />
defying Mountain<lb />
Dew. All of these<lb />
beverages daily<lb />
lifesavers for the<lb />
many, the proud,<lb />
the caffeine lovers.<lb />
The stimulant<lb />
caffeine is a constant<lb />
staple of daily life.<lb />
If it's not coffee pur-<lb />
chased from the superb<lb />
Java City, then typically<lb />
it is a 20-ounce Pepsi<lb />
jump starting the day of<lb />
most college students.<lb />
Aside from the "gra-<lb />
nola heads" and freakishly<lb />
weird that despise soft<lb />
drinks, nearly everyone<lb />
in America - 80 percent<lb />
- is addicted to caffeine on<lb />
some level.<lb />
While studies have<lb />
proven that caffeine addic-<lb />
tion is a legitimate disease,<lb />
the likelihood of dying from<lb />
it is very rare. To over-<lb />
dose, an average human<lb />
would have to consume over<lb />
140 cups of coffee in a spe-<lb />
cific amount of time that is<lb />
then dependent on a half-life<lb />
Caffeine is a centra<lb />
nervous system stimulant<lb />
having the effect of warding<lb />
off drowsiness and restoring<lb />
alertness. This is extremely impor-<lb />
tant when it comes to studying<lb />
all night for an exam or rejuve-<lb />
nating after an all-day tailgate.<lb />
For these occasions, coffee<lb />
is not always appropriate.<lb />
Instead, energy drinks such as<lb />
Red Bull and Amp contain caf-<lb />
feine from guarana, which is less<lb />
potent than that in coffee beans.<lb />
According to Wikipedia, the<lb />
most reliable source of information,<lb />
the early use of caffeine is unsure.<lb />
There are many differ-<lb />
ent legends, but the<lb />
most ridiculous<lb />
stems from Ethio-<lb />
pia. Apparently,<lb />
a goat herder<lb />
named Kaldi<lb />
noticed goats expe-<lb />

sleeplessness after<lb />
grazing on coffee<lb />
shrubs. Disregarding<lb />
health risks and intel-<lb />
ligence, Kaldi sampled<lb />
the berries from the<lb />
shrubs that the goats<lb />
had been eating and<lb />
felt the same vitality<lb />
In more modern<lb />
times, caffeine in the<lb />
form of the kola nut<lb />
stemmed one of the<lb />
first documented health <lb />
scares. In 1911, the U.S. <lb />
government seized 40 "<lb />
barrels and 20 kegs of<lb />
Coca-Cola that was made<lb />
with kola nuts. The gov-<lb />
ernment wanted Coca-<lb />

from their recipe citing<lb />
that excessive use of the<lb />
drink at a girls' school<lb />
led to "wild nocturnal<lb />

The negative and<lb />

SHANNON DAVIS<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
The popularity of body art<lb />
has skyrocketed in the passed<lb />
two decades. It is now acceptable<lb />
for both men and women to have<lb />
pierced ears, and even a nose or<lb />
eyebrow ring will not make<lb />
the average passerby<lb />
flinch. The standard<lb />
of what is consid-<lb />
ered acceptable<lb />
a in modern soci-<lb />
i ety has morphed<lb />
Jj into something<lb />
completely dif-<lb />
fe r e n t than<lb />
j when our parents<lb />
were in college.<lb />
Although tattoos<lb />
are less common than<lb />
piercings, they are both<lb />
a part of the body art family.<lb />
The word tattoo comes from<lb />
the Tahitian "tatu" which means,<lb />
"to mark something A tattoo is<lb />
a permanent symbol marked by<lb />
ink on a person's body. To many<lb />
in our society, tattoos are associ-<lb />
ated w ith delinquents and have a<lb />
negative connotation<lb />
Many people still fear hepati-<lb />
tis, connecting tattoo parlors to<lb />
dirty needles. This, however, is<lb />
not the case. Every legal tattoo<lb />
shop follows health codes and<lb />
has sterilizing machines and<lb />
clean equipment.<lb />
The most common<lb />
age group interested<lb />
in tattoos is 18-26.<lb />
With this said,<lb />
the majority of<lb />
these p e o p1e<lb />
are of the typi-<lb />

Senior<lb />
art major and<lb />
tattoo artist Matt<lb />
Kerley had a lot to<lb />
say about body art.<lb />
"I think that tattoos<lb />
are wonderful. To me, they are a<lb />
version of public art. They are fine<lb />
art for the common man that they<lb />
can afford There are drawbacks<lb />
to it in the social norms realm<lb />
though. Nine out of 10 times,<lb />
someone with a large tattoo on<lb />
their neck is not going to become<lb />
a bank teller or a brain surgeon<lb />
That is just how it is. Maybe one<lb />
day, with our generation draw-<lb />
ing' on ourselves, things will<lb />
change But as of today's society,<lb />
that wont happen. I believe that<lb />
the positive outweighs the nega-<lb />
tive, though. The freedom of self-<lb />
expression is wonderful. Someone<lb />
but<lb />
can adorn themselves<lb />
in whatever image<lb />
they want. A lot of<lb />
times the images<lb />
help them get<lb />
over a death in<lb />
the family. The<lb />
tattoo will help<lb />
them remember<lb />
their loved ones<lb />
when they're away at<lb />
war or have just moved<lb />
out of state. Honestly,<lb />
I wish there was more<lb />
respect for the art form<lb />

Tattoos do<lb />
have long last-<lb />

especially<lb />
when it<lb />

entering the<lb />

Many jobs will<lb />

are judged by the<lb />
way they look, but<lb />
it is also reality.<lb />
Tattoos can b<lb />

Body art is definitely some-<lb />

Some ve successful relationships are between people with an age difference.<lb />
Age is never only a number<lb />
How big of a difference<lb />
is too much in a<lb />
relationship?<lb />
MEREDITH STEWART<lb />
SENIOR WRITER<lb />
When it comes to dating,<lb />
does the age of the person really<lb />
make a difference? Say you<lb />
get to know someone, they are<lb />
attractive, smart and<lb />
funny, and you can tell there<lb />
is a connection, but they are<lb />
younger than you are. Do you avoid<lb />
a date with them simply because of<lb />
their age? In today's society, gender<lb />
plays a big role in whether or not<lb />
ones age is appropriate or not.<lb />
If a guy were to date a<lb />
girl a few years younger than<lb />
him, no one would even think<lb />
twice about it. When a guy<lb />
dates a girl who is just a little<lb />
older, people have a few things<lb />
to say.<lb />
"The guy is usually the one<lb />
older in a relationship said James<lb />
Tsui, sophomore, criminal justice<lb />
major. "Traditionally, the male<lb />
is supposed to be the dominant<lb />
person, so therefore they are<lb />
usually older. But I think that in<lb />
today's society things can be a<lb />
little different<lb />
Males are usually the ones<lb />
who are older, but as times change<lb />
so do the expectations of society.<lb />
You will find that many guys date<lb />
girls who are older than they are.<lb />
The problem that they seem to<lb />
run into is the fact that females<lb />
seem to mature faster than males.<lb />
So if the girl is older, she is most<lb />
likely to be the dominant person<lb />
in the relationship. She has the<lb />
years of maturity as well as being<lb />
biologically older.<lb />
Age usually matters when you<lb />
are younger. The older you are,<lb />
the more mature both genders<lb />
get. If you are in and dating a 16-<lb />
year-old, then you are going to<lb />
run into some problems. Say you<lb />
are 25 and dating someone who is<lb />
28 things will probably turn out<lb />
a little better.<lb />
Is there a certain age to agree<lb />
on or at least a range of ages<lb />
that tall into the same category<lb />
to where it is no longer a factor?<lb />
People do not have control over<lb />
who they fall in love with, so<lb />
regardless of their age, dating is<lb />
solely up to the two people who<lb />
are involved with each other.<lb />
If you meet someone and like<lb />
them, why not give it a shot? Tra-<lb />
ditionally males are supposed to be<lb />
older, but just like many other things<lb />
in society, that stigma is changing.<lb />
It is all about maturity level,<lb />
lifestyles and compromises that<lb />
really make a relationship work.<lb />
And of course, I cannot forget<lb />
about the key factor, being in<lb />
love and having that special con-<lb />
nection. Do not let society ever<lb />
stop you from dating someone<lb />

STAFF WRITER<lb />
With summer wrapping up<lb />
and winter weather fast approach-<lb />
ing, you might be searching for<lb />
a place to bask in the remain-<lb />
ing days of sun and heat. One-<lb />
such place is Virginia Beach and<lb />
located just three hours to our<lb />
north, you can spend the week-<lb />
end, or just the day, exploring<lb />
what this great resort town has<lb />
to offer.<lb />
Of course the first place you'll<lb />
want to visit is the ocean. The<lb />
Atlantic oceanfront. in Virginia<lb />
Beach holds the world's record<lb />
for longest pleasure beach and<lb />
attracts over 1.5 million tourists<lb />
per year. Much of the appeal can<lb />
be attributed to the great events<lb />
hosted here by the city on a near<lb />
weekly basis, ranging from con-<lb />
certs to volleyball tournaments to<lb />
surfing exhibitions and more.<lb />
The crown jewel of the city's<lb />
event schedule is the month-long<lb />
Neptune Festival. Held every<lb />
September since 1973, the festi-<lb />
val caps off the summer with a<lb />
celebration of the sea, providing<lb />
family-friendly entertainment in<lb />
the form of live music, parades<lb />
and fireworks displays.<lb />
By night, "the strip" comes<lb />
alive with pubs and dance clubs<lb />
all along the boardwalk, so you<lb />
can't go far without running into<lb />
temptation.<lb />
If you're looking to escape<lb />
Approximately 1.5 million tourists flock to Virginia Beach each year.<lb />
from all the action and excitement<lb />
of the oceanfront, then head down<lb />
to the Chesapeake Bay, the locals'<lb />
best kept secret. The beaches of<lb />
the Chesapeake Bay offer calmer<lb />
water and less crowded sands,<lb />
making it the perfect destination<lb />
to simply relax. When the sun<lb />
goes down, retreat to local hot<lb />
spots such as Hot Tuna and Rock-<lb />
afeller's, where you can dine on<lb />
the region's fresh seafood while<lb />
mingling with the natives.<lb />
For the adventurous among<lb />
us, try Seashore State Park.<lb />
Located at the northern neck<lb />
of the city between the Atlantic<lb />
and the Chesapeake Bay, the park<lb />
offers over 2,000 acres of marsh<lb />
and forest untouched by civiliza-<lb />
tion. With plenty of hiking trails<lb />
and bicycle paths, you can spend<lb />
the whole day exploring Virginia<lb />
Beach's natural beauty.<lb />
After the tiring afternoon,<lb />
you can camp out under the stars<lb />
Oil the park's bay-front beach.<lb />
If shopping is your thing,<lb />
then you'll want to get away from<lb />
the surf and sand and check out<lb />
Lynnhaven Mall. This first-class<lb />
shopping center offers wares from<lb />
the likes of Macy's, The Limited,<lb />
Express and Gap. When you're<lb />
done, you can go down the street<lb />
to Town Center, Virginia Beach's<lb />
burgeoning downtown district,<lb />
and experience fine dining from<lb />
great restaurants such as the<lb />
Red Star Tavern, and the world-<lb />
renowned Ruth's Chris Steak<lb />
House.<lb />

The stimulant<lb />

Aside from the "gra-<lb />

some level.<lb />
While studies have<lb />

the likelihood of dying from<lb />

Caffeine is a central<lb />

For these occasions, coffee<lb />
is not always appropriate.<lb />
Instead, energy drinks such as<lb />

According to Wikipedia, the<lb />

There are many differ-<lb />

The negative and<lb />

SHANNON DAVIS<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
The popularity of body art<lb />
has skyrocketed in the passed<lb />
two decades. It is now acceptable<lb />
for both men and women to have<lb />
pierced ears, and even a nose or<lb />
eyebrow ring will not make<lb />
the average passerby<lb />
flinch. The standard<lb />
of what is consid-<lb />
ered acceptable<lb />
in modern soci-<lb />
i ety has morphed<lb />
j into something<lb />
completely dif-<lb />
gferent than<lb />
c when our parents<lb />
were in college.<lb />
Although tattoos<lb />
are less common than<lb />
piercings, they are both<lb />
a part of the body art family.<lb />
The word tattoo comes from<lb />
theTahitian "tatu" which means,<lb />
"to mark something A tattoo is<lb />
a permanent symbol marked by<lb />
ink on a person's body. To many<lb />
in our society, tattoos are associ-<lb />

negative connotation.<lb />
Many people still fear hepati-<lb />
tis, connecting tattoo parlors to<lb />
dirty needles. This, however, is<lb />
not the case. Every legal tattoo<lb />
shop follows health codes and<lb />
has sterilizing machines and<lb />

The most common<lb />

With this said,<lb />

Senior<lb />

"I think that tattoos<lb />
are wonderful. To me, they are a<lb />
version of public art. They are fine<lb />
art for the common man that they<lb />
can afford There are drawbacks<lb />
to it in the social norms realm<lb />
though. Nine out of 10 times,<lb />
someone with a large tattoo on<lb />
their neck is not going to become<lb />
a bank teller or a brain surgeon<lb />
That is just how it is. Maybe one<lb />
day, with our generation draw-<lb />
ing' on ourselves, things will<lb />
change. But as of today's society,<lb />
that won't happen. I believe that<lb />
the positive outweighs the nega-<lb />
tive, though. The freedom of self-<lb />
expression is wonderful. Someone<lb />
can adorn themselve<lb />
in whatever image<lb />
they want. A lot of<lb />
times the images<lb />
help them get<lb />
over a death in<lb />
the family. The<lb />
tattoo will help<lb />
them remember<lb />
their loved ones<lb />
when they're away at<lb />

I wish there was more<lb />

Age is never only a number<lb />

How big of a difference<lb />

MEREDITH STEWART<lb />
SENIOR WRITER<lb />
When it comes to dating,<lb />
does the age of the person really<lb />
make a difference? Say you<lb />
get to know someone, they are<lb />
attractive, smart and<lb />
funny, and you can tell there<lb />
is a connection, but they are<lb />
younger than you are. Do you avoid<lb />
a date with them simply because of<lb />
their ageI n today's society, gender<lb />
plays a big role in whether or not<lb />
ones age is appropriate or not.<lb />
If a guy were to date a<lb />
girl a few years younger than<lb />
him, no one would even think<lb />
twice about it. When a guy<lb />
dates a girl who is just a little<lb />
older, people have a few things<lb />
to say.<lb />
"The guy is usually the one<lb />
older in a relationship said James<lb />
Tsui, sophomore, criminal justice<lb />
major. "Traditionally, the male<lb />
is supposed to be the dominant<lb />
person, so therefore they are<lb />
usually older. But I think that in<lb />
today's society things can be a<lb />
little different<lb />
Males are usually the ones<lb />
who are older, but as times change<lb />
so do the expectations of society.<lb />
You will find that many guys date<lb />
girls who are older than they are.<lb />
The problem that they seem to<lb />
run into is the fact that females<lb />
seem to mature faster than ma'les.<lb />
So if the girl is older, she is most<lb />
likely to be the dominant person<lb />
in the relationship. She has the<lb />
years of maturity as well as being<lb />
biologically older.<lb />
Age usually matters when you<lb />
are younger. The older you are,<lb />
the more mature both genders<lb />
get. If you are 18 and dating a 16-<lb />
year-old, then you are going to<lb />
run into some problems. Say you<lb />
are 25 and dating someone who is<lb />
23 things will probably turn out<lb />
a little better.<lb />
Is there a certain age to agree<lb />
on or at least a range of ages<lb />
that fall into the same category<lb />
to where it is no longer a factor?<lb />
People do not have control over<lb />
who they fall in love with, so<lb />
regardless of their age, dating is<lb />
solely up to the two people who<lb />
are involved with each other.<lb />
If you meet someone and like<lb />
them, why not give it a shot? Tra-<lb />
ditionally males are supposed to be<lb />
older, but just like many other things<lb />
in society, that stigma is changing.<lb />
It is all about maturity level,<lb />
lifestyles and compromises that<lb />
really make a relationship work.<lb />
And of course, I cannot forget<lb />
about the key factor, being in<lb />
love and having that special con-<lb />
nection. Do not let society ever<lb />
stop you from dating someone<lb />

LLOYD NEWMAN<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
With summer wrapping up<lb />
and winter weather fast approach-<lb />
ing, you might be searching tor<lb />
a place to bask in the remain-<lb />
ing days of sun and heat. One-<lb />
such place is Virginia Beach and<lb />
located just three hours to our<lb />
north, you can spend the week-<lb />
end, or just the day, exploring<lb />
what this great resort town has<lb />
to offer.<lb />
Of course the first place you'll<lb />
want to visit is the ocean. The<lb />
Atlantic oceanfront. in Virginia<lb />
Beach holds the world's record<lb />
for longest pleasure beach and<lb />
attracts over 1.5 million tourists<lb />
per year. Much of the appeal can<lb />
be attributed to the great events<lb />
hosted here by the city on a near<lb />
weekly basis, ranging from con-<lb />
certs to volleyball tournaments to<lb />
surfing exhibitions and more.<lb />
The crown jewel of the city's<lb />
event schedule is the month-long<lb />
Neptune Festival. Held every<lb />
September since 1973, the festi-<lb />
val caps off the summer with a<lb />
celebration of the sea, providing<lb />
family-friendly entertainment in<lb />
the form of live music, parades<lb />
and fireworks displays.<lb />
By night, "the strip" comes<lb />
alive with pubs and dance clubs<lb />
all along the boardwalk, so you<lb />
can't go far without running into<lb />
temptation.<lb />
If you're looking to escape<lb />
Approximately 1.5 million tourists flock to Virginia Beach each year.<lb />
from all the action and excitement<lb />
of the oceanfront, then head down<lb />
to the Chesapeake Bay, the locals'<lb />
best kept secret. The beaches of<lb />
the Chesapeake Bay offer calmer<lb />
water and less crowded sands,<lb />
making it the perfect destination<lb />
to simply relax. When the sun<lb />
goes down, retreat to local hot<lb />
spots such as Hot Tuna and Rock-<lb />
efeller's, where you can dine on<lb />
the region's fresh seafood while<lb />
mingling with the natives.<lb />
For the adventurous among<lb />
us, try Seashore State Park.<lb />
Located at the northern neck<lb />
of the city between the Atlantic<lb />
and the Chesapeake Bay, the park<lb />
offers over '2,000 acres of marsh<lb />
and forest untouched by civiliza-<lb />
tion. With plenty of hiking trails<lb />
and bicycle paths, you can spend<lb />
the whole day exploring Virginia<lb />
Beach's natural beauty.<lb />
After the tiring afternoon,<lb />
you can camp out under the stars<lb />
on the park's bay-front beach.<lb />
If shopping is your thing,<lb />
then you'll want to get away from<lb />
the surf and sand and check out<lb />
Lynnhaven Mall. This first-class<lb />
shopping center offers wares from<lb />
the likes of Macy's, The Limited.<lb />
Kxpress and Gap. When you're<lb />
done, you can go down the street<lb />
to Town Center, Virginia Beach's<lb />
burgeoning downtown district,<lb />
and experience tine dining from<lb />
great restaurants such as the<lb />
Red Star Tavern, and the world-<lb />
renowned Ruth's Chris Steak<lb />
House.<lb />

Jamar Bryant was a prized recruit after playing quarterback for former ECU coach Ed Emory<lb />
at Richmond County High School. He threw for 1,276 yards and 12 touchdowns as a senior.<lb />
James Pirikney, left, has passed for 6,436 yards during his ECU career. He led the largest<lb />
classification in Florida's Palm-Beach County in passing yardage as a high school senior by<lb />
throwing for 1,807 yards and 13 touchdowns. A year later and roughly 300 miles up the<lb />
road, Kasey Ross, above, threw for 1,529 yards and rushed for 985 yards at Gainesville<lb />
High School. In total, 14 players currently on ECU's roster were high school signal callers.<lb />

RON CLEMENTS<lb />

Rob Kass, Patrick Pinkney and<lb />
Brett Clay are the three baikup<lb />
quarterbacks listed behind senior<lb />
starter James Pinkney on the ECU<lb />
football team. Should something<lb />
happen to all four of those players<lb />
and the Pirates need an emergency<lb />
quarterback to take snaps, head<lb />
coach Skip Holtz would not have<lb />
a hard time finding one.<lb />
ECU has several former high<lb />
school quarterbacks now playing<lb />
different positions for the Pirates,<lb />
many of them starters. There are,<lb />
including Wayne Hunter, Dwayne<lb />
Harris and Joseph Sloan from<lb />
the scout team, 14 players on the<lb />
Pirate roster who were high school<lb />
quarterbacks.<lb />
"They are athletic enough to<lb />
play college football and that's why<lb />
you recruit them said Holtz.<lb />
"They may be second or third<lb />
on the depth chart, but yet they're<lb />
talented enough to help the team<lb />
win, so that's when you sit them<lb />
dow n and say, If you want to play<lb />
right away and you want to help<lb />
this team, we need you to switch<lb />
to this position They move and<lb />
they end up being stars<lb />
Seniors Kasey Ross, Pierre<lb />
Parker and Pat Dosh, and<lb />
sophomore Davon Drew were<lb />
all standout signal callers in<lb />
high school who have developed<lb />
into starting players at different<lb />
positions.<lb />
Ross, who was named the<lb />
Conference USA Defensive Player<lb />
of the Week following the team's<lb />
35-20 win over Memphis, joked<lb />
that the quarterbacks are "the<lb />
best athletes<lb />
Ross' comments were substan-<lb />

"If you're a high school coach,<lb />
you're gonna take your best player<lb />
and you're gonna put the ball in<lb />
his hand and say that's who I want<lb />
to have the ball the second-year<lb />
coach said.<lb />
Ross, Parker, Dosh and Drew<lb />
are not the only former quarter-<lb />
backs making an impact on the<lb />
football team.<lb />
Receivers Jamar Bryant and<lb />
Will Bland and reserve full-<lb />

standout quarterbacks, each of<lb />
them earning all-conference<lb />
honors. Bryant, who was highly<lb />

originally signed with Georgia,<lb />
was rated as the number 12 player<lb />

Through five weeks, nearly<lb />

Like the NFL, which prides<lb />
itself aa the worlds' premier sports<lb />

the collegiate game was supposed<lb />
to erase the seemingly common<lb />
errors that occurred each Saturday.<lb />
Don't mind the extra millions<lb />
of dollars spent ai loss the NCAA to<lb />
prep multiple cameras. Dismiss the<lb />
strain on conference athletic bud-<lb />

by an unfunded mandate adopted in<lb />
February by the almighty NCAA to<lb />

The thought was to let the<lb />

the Pac-10 suspended Reise tor the<lb />
remainder ofthe season. The mis-<lb />
take caused Oklahoma president<lb />
David Boren to call for the game to<lb />
be stricken from the record books.<lb />
"To describe the lapses in accu-<lb />
rate officiating at the Oklahoma-<lb />
Oregon football game last Satur-<lb />
day as constituting an outrageous<lb />
injustice is an understatement<lb />
Boren wrote in the letter to Big<lb />
Commissioner Kevin Weiberg<lb />
dated Sept. 1H.<lb />
The incident wa backed up<lb />
when Conference USA suspended<lb />
an instant replay official on<lb />
Monday who overturned a fumble<lb />
by I louston's Jeron Harvey. Follow-<lb />
ing a challenge by Houston coach<lb />
Art Briles, the replay official ruled<lb />
that Harvey's forward progress<lb />
had been stopped before the ball<lb />
was stripped. Houston scored a<lb />
touchdown four plays later and<lb />
WOO 34-25.<lb />
"The last thing I worry about<lb />
is how they're going to clean up<lb />
instant replay, and I'm not trying<lb />
to be sarcastic said Oklahoma<lb />
State Head Coach Mike Gundy in<lb />
an AP article released Monday. "1<lb />
just think it's got a long ways to<lb />
go. The last thing I'll say about it<lb />
is if we have a review and we have<lb />
rules in place to make it right and<lb />
then we make it wrong twice in<lb />
obviously two big games, then it's<lb />
not working, right?"<lb />
Precisely.<lb />
Instead of ridding the reliance<lb />
on technology, why not put the<lb />
focus back on the referees Is it<lb />
fair to hold referees to 100 percent<lb />
correct' standard due to the aid of<lb />
instant replay? Make human error<lb />
a necessary evil.<lb />
The multiple rule changes to<lb />
compensate for the time lost for<lb />
the instant replay calls have dulled<lb />
the college game as well. The<lb />
games are shorter, which magni-<lb />
fies the impact of each play. The<lb />
clock starting as the ball is kicked<lb />
instead of caught on kickoffs is a<lb />
minor change. But the addendum<lb />
made to the clock when a change<lb />
of possession occurs has thwarted<lb />
potential late game comebacks.<lb />
Draining a potential 95 seconds off<lb />
the clock to start the clock when<lb />
the referee winds the clock rather<lb />
than when the hall is snapped<lb />
has prevented teams from having<lb />
necessary timeouts to set up late<lb />
game drives.<lb />
Texas A&M coach Dennis<lb />
I'ranchione was quoted the Dallas<lb />

THE EAST CAROLINIAN SPORTS<lb />
WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2006<lb />
QUARTERBACKS<lb />
continued from A6<lb />
at Richmond County.<lb />
Bland was a first-team all-<lb />
Big East conference selection<lb />
while at Havelock and Shankwei-<lb />
ler earned all-conference honors<lb />
while under center at Greenville's<lb />
J.H. Rose High School.<lb />
Drew, who was an all-state<lb />
quarterback while leading the<lb />
New Bern High School team to<lb />
consecutive 4-AA state champi-<lb />
onship games, has settled into his<lb />
new position with eight catches<lb />
for 93 yards and a touchdown.<lb />
"It's a big change said the 6-<lb />
foot-4,250-pound Drew. "Coach<lb />
told me that I'd have a lot of<lb />
advantages with my speed. I'm<lb />
starting to get better, but I even<lb />
notice myself sometimes, I make<lb />
mistakes on blocking. It's just<lb />
little things that I need to pick<lb />
up on<lb />
Wide receivers coach Donnie<lb />
Kirkpatrick said a player like<lb />
Drew finds transitioning to a<lb />
new position easier because of the<lb />
experience at quarterback.<lb />
"He just gives you the abil-<lb />
ity of a guy that has played<lb />
quarterback, so he understands<lb />
coverage Kirkpatrick said about<lb />
Drew. "He understands defend-<lb />
ers and kinda knows how to get<lb />
them on his back and fake them<lb />
out. He's athletic, he was a run-<lb />
ning-type quarterback, so when<lb />
he gets the ball in his hands, he's<lb />
got some skills. He hasn't really<lb />
had a chance to show that yet,<lb />
but I think that's the next part<lb />
to come<lb />
Parker spurned UNC to come<lb />
to ECU out of Wilson Bed-<lb />
dingfield High School, where he<lb />
earned all-Big East 3-A confer-<lb />
ence honors and was invited to<lb />
the Shine Bowl and East-West<lb />
All-Star Game after account-<lb />
ing for over 2,100 yards and 28<lb />
touchdowns as a senior.<lb />
Dosh, who was a first-team<lb />
all-state quarterback while<lb />
attending Benedictine High<lb />
School in Glen Allen, Va was<lb />
ranked by rivals.com as one of<lb />
the nation's top 20 pro-style<lb />
quarterbacks after passing for<lb />
more than 8,600 yards and 74<lb />
touchdowns. Spending his fresh-<lb />
man year at Florida, the current<lb />
ECU starting fullback is at his<lb />
third position for the Pirates,<lb />
but understands his role on the<lb />
team.<lb />
"I just help out any way I can<lb />
said the 6-3, 240-pound senior.<lb />
"Blocking, chipping, releasing<lb />
into the flats, just doing what<lb />
I've been doing, basically. Spe-<lb />
cial teams, also, I'm still doing a<lb />
lot of that, and just being one of<lb />
those guys they can constantly<lb />
count on<lb />
Dosh's blocking and chipping<lb />
paved the way for junior tailback<lb />
Chris Johnson to run for 106<lb />
yards against Memphis and he<lb />
has even given the opportunity<lb />
to carry the ball. The 22-year-old<lb />
hospitality management major<lb />
has one carry for four yards and<lb />
two receptions for 23 yards.<lb />
Deep down, though, he may<lb />
still be waiting for another chance<lb />
to line up under center.<lb />
"If we ever need an emer-<lb />
gency QB, we have plenty of<lb />
them he laughed.<lb />

Conference USA suspends official after instant replay mistake<lb />
RICE<lb />
continued from A6<lb />
for all of us<lb />
Del Conte said Lloyd col-<lb />
lapsed while the team was<lb />
doing some light running.<lb />
Although he didn't complain<lb />
of anything specific, he told<lb />
team trainers he didn't feel right.<lb />
"Nooneknows what happened<lb />
Del Conte said. "It's a mystery<lb />
An autopsy was pending.<lb />
Coaches met with the team<lb />
Monday afternoon to talk about<lb />
Lloyd's death.<lb />
"He was a tremendous student<lb />
who happened to play football<lb />
Del Conte said, fighting back tears.<lb />
"His smile just lit up the room<lb />
Lloyd played in Rice's season<lb />
opener against Houston but didn't<lb />
play the last three games. The<lb />
team planned to redshirt him.<lb />
Rice is scheduled to travel to<lb />
face Army on Saturday. Del Conte<lb />
said he hasn't made a decision on<lb />
the status of that game.<lb />
"The Rice Owl family has suf-<lb />
fered a devastating loss Rice coach<lb />
Todd Graham said in a statement.<lb />
"Dale was a tremendous person<lb />
with the heart of a champion<lb />
Lloyd played football and<lb />
baseball at Houston's Lamar High<lb />
School, was selected to the Who's<lb />
Who Among American High<lb />
School Students and volunteered<lb />
with the Mayor's Youth Council.<lb />
He is survived by his parents,<lb />
Dale and Bridgette Lloyd, and<lb />
two brothers.<lb />
ECU Head Coach Skip Holtz voices his displeasure to an official.<lb />
(AP) Conference USA sus-<lb />
pended an instant replay official<lb />
on Monday who overturned a<lb />
fumble by Houston's Jeron Harvey<lb />
in the second quarter of the Cou-<lb />
gars' victory over Oklahoma State<lb />
this weekend.<lb />
Following a challenge by<lb />
Houston coach Art Briles, the<lb />
replay official ruled that Har-<lb />
vey's forward progress had been<lb />
stopped before the ball was<lb />
stripped by Oklahoma State's<lb />
Rodrick Johnson and recovered<lb />
by the Cowboys.<lb />
Four plays later, Houston<lb />
scored on a 27-yard pass from<lb />
Kevin Kolb to Vincent Marshall<lb />
to take a 24-17 halftime lead.<lb />
Houston won 34-25.<lb />
The conference said in a<lb />
news release that the play should<lb />
not have been subject to review<lb />
because "a runner's forward prog-<lb />
ress may only be reviewed to deter-<lb />
mine whether or not the forward<lb />
progress results in a first down<lb />
Further, the conference said<lb />
the ruling on the field was cor-<lb />
rect. The suspended official was<lb />
not identified.<lb />
"When we implemented<lb />
instant replay, our goal was to get<lb />
more calls right, which we have<lb />
conference commissioner Britton<lb />
Banowsky said in the release.<lb />
: "In this case, by rule, the call on<lb />
the field should not have been<lb />
reviewed, for which the instant<lb />
replay official will be suspended<lb />
The conference did not give<lb />
details on the official's suspension,<lb />
citing conference policy.<lb />
Oklahoma State coach Mike<lb />
Gundy said the mistake just high-<lb />
lighted problems with replay.<lb />
"I don't like instant replay<lb />
because I just don't think we'll<lb />
ever clean it up Gundy said after<lb />
the Cowboys' practice on Monday.<lb />
"I'd just as soon go with the ruling<lb />
on the field and live with it like we<lb />
have in football for 100 years<lb />
The call came one week after a<lb />
Pacific-10 Conference crew incor-<lb />
rectly awarded Oregon possession<lb />
on an onside kick it had illegally<lb />
touched late in the fourth quarter<lb />
against Oklahoma. The Ducks<lb />
went on to score the winning<lb />
touchdown in a 34-33 win.<lb />
This time, the call came before<lb />
halftime.<lb />
"That's not why we lost<lb />
the game Gundy said. "We<lb />
couldn't stop them and we turned<lb />
the ball over late. That's why we<lb />
lost the game<lb />
After others on the Oklahoma<lb />
State sideline alerted him of the<lb />
situation, Gundy said he told the<lb />
officials on the field that the play<lb />
was not subject to review.<lb />
"My only concerning issue is<lb />
when we're on the field reminding<lb />
them this is not something that's<lb />
reviewable and their response is,<lb />
'Well, the guy in the booth has the<lb />
last say Gundy said.<lb />
Gundy said he wouldn't neces-<lb />
sarily support a system in noncon-<lb />
ference games where officials on<lb />
the field were from one conference<lb />
and replay officials came the other<lb />
team's conference, nor did he have<lb />
an opinion on art unaffiliated<lb />
replay crew for all games.<lb />
He said he thinks the system<lb />
"puts a lot of pressure on the<lb />
officials<lb />
"I think if you're unaware of<lb />
the rules and you're in a situation<lb />
where you make the final deci-<lb />
sion, you could be from Mars and<lb />
I don't think it would matter<lb />
Gundy said.<lb />
Gundy said he didn't know<lb />
if there was a way to fix instant<lb />
replay.<lb />
"The last thing I worry about<lb />
is how they're going to clean up<lb />
instant replay, and I'm not trying<lb />
to be sarcastic Gundy said. "I<lb />
just think it's got a long ways to<lb />
go. The last thing I'll say about it<lb />
is if we have a review and we have<lb />
rules in place to make it right and<lb />
then we make it wrong twice in<lb />
obviously two big games, then it's<lb />
not working, right?"<lb /><lb />
