Ever wonder what your<lb/>
student fees are used for?<lb/>
Student fees are<lb/>
determined by students<lb/>
CHRISTOPHER STEVENSON<lb/>
STAFF WRITF.R<lb/>
If you enjoy watching movies<lb/>
at Hendrix Theater or working<lb/>
out at the Student Recreation<lb/>
Center, you have this privilege<lb/>
because of student fees. Student<lb/>
fees are essential in many ways to<lb/>
keep ECU running.<lb/>
Student fees are used<lb/>
primarily for student programs.<lb/>
For example, Mendenhall Stu-<lb/>
dent Center, Student Health Ser-<lb/>
vices and the student transit<lb/>
system all offer key benefits to<lb/>
make student life run smoothly<lb/>
and these student programs are<lb/>
all funded through the use of<lb/>
student fees.<lb/>
Student fees are also determined<lb/>
by the students in a legislative, stu-<lb/>
dent-run process through the ECU<lb/>
Student Government Association.<lb/>
"The student fees are voted<lb/>
on by the student congress said<lb/>
Corey King, associate vice chan-<lb/>
cellor for student experiences.<lb/>
King stressed that it's<lb/>
not an administrative process,<lb/>
but instead a purely student-run<lb/>
process.<lb/>
Last week, someone mailed<lb/>
a small rubber football that<lb/>
promoted the SGA to the<lb/>
East Carolinian office with a<lb/>
letter asking "Are our student<lb/>
fees used for these?" Student<lb/>
fees were in fact used to pur-<lb/>
chase those promotional footballs<lb/>
through the SGA.<lb/>
Questions about how student<lb/>
fees are used are welcomed by<lb/>
SGA and students are encour-<lb/>
aged to take an active role<lb/>
because the SGA exists primarily<lb/>
for students.<lb/>
The SGA also has a congress<lb/>
that discusses a variety of issues,<lb/>
including student fees. Also, all<lb/>
those that are elected to the con-<lb/>
gress are students.<lb/>
"Congress will vote on student<lb/>
fees in November King said. The<lb/>
meeting will be publicized and<lb/>
will be open to students. The SGA<lb/>
will also have some open forums<lb/>
about student fees for students<lb/>
to attend.<lb/>
King stressed that the whole<lb/>
process is transparent.<lb/>
"We do not try to<lb/>
cover anything said King.<lb/>
The meetings are run<lb/>
and guided completely by student<lb/>
members of the SGA. The posi-<lb/>
tions held by students in the SGA<lb/>
are mostly elected positions.<lb/>
If you're a student and you<lb/>
want your voice heard, annual<lb/>
elections and open forums are<lb/>
great ways to get your viewpoints<lb/>
out there.<lb/>
According to the SGA<lb/>
Web site, ecu.edusga, three<lb/>
key purposes of the SGA are<lb/>
to provide a way for responsible<lb/>
and effective student participa-<lb/>
tion within in the organization<lb/>
and control of student affairs, to<lb/>
look into student problems, and<lb/>
to take part in those decisions<lb/>
affecting students.<lb/>
The SGA offices are located in<lb/>
the Mendenhall Student Center.<lb/>
If you have any ideas, questions or<lb/>
suggestions, contact the SGA by<lb/>
phone at 328-4742.<lb/>

ECU welcomes off-campus<lb/>

(MCT) If you're majoring<lb/>
in philosophy, take heart. And if<lb/>
you're studying economics, don't<lb/>
be so confident you've got a bright<lb/>
future just because of your major.<lb/>
What's printed on your diploma<lb/>
isn't as important as having real<lb/>
skills you can apply on the job.<lb/>
Veteran business strategist<lb/>
David Lorenzo said he's sure<lb/>
of it.<lb/>
"It doesn't matter if you're a.<lb/>
liberal arts or science major. It's<lb/>
really about focusing on build-<lb/>
ing a body of experiences, skills,<lb/>
and knowledge that will let the<lb/>
employer light up like a pinball<lb/>

The former corporate con-<lb/>
sultant who now works with the<lb/>

talked about what workplace skills<lb/>
students should be honing during<lb/>
their college years.<lb/>
unng job interviews.<lb/>
Q. What do employers look for<lb/>
from recent graduates P<lb/>
The kind of thing recruiters or<lb/>
employers go absolutely nuts for<lb/>
is when they hear a new graduate<lb/>
or recent graduate talk about<lb/>
adding value.<lb/>
Q. Can you give an exampleP<lb/>
Think of times you've helped<lb/>
someone else or other people fulfill<lb/>
their potential. Maybe you tutored<lb/>
others in college. Teaching is lead-<lb/>
ing. Maybe you were the team<lb/>
equipment manager who helped<lb/>
superstar players by taping their<lb/>
ankle before the game.<lb/>
It's about using a specific<lb/>
example of that type of role during<lb/>
your interview. Stories about cre-<lb/>
ating value are phenomenal. I've<lb/>
worked with kids who leveraged<lb/>
that into great jobs.<lb/>

North Carolina World War I general sparks interest<lb/>
Mclver was a true American hero who has made an impression on ECU.<lb/>
Joyner Library curator<lb/>
comments on insights<lb/>
BY LEE SCHWARZ<lb/>
STAFF WRITER<lb/>
Brigadier General George<lb/>
Mclver fought in the Spanish-<lb/>
American War and World War<lb/>
I. He was the commandant of<lb/>
Alcatraz prison and helped in<lb/>
relief efforts in the 1906 San Fran-<lb/>
cisco Earthquake. Additionally<lb/>
his observations on mobilization<lb/>
during the Pancho Villa campaign<lb/>
helped bring about a tactical reform<lb/>
for U.S. forces that would fight and<lb/>
win in World War I.<lb/>
We know this now thanks to<lb/>
professor and curator of Special<lb/>
Collections Projects at Joyner<lb/>
Library, Dr. Jonathan Dembo, who<lb/>
found the fascinating collected<lb/>
writings of Brig. Gen. George<lb/>
Mclver, a post-Civil War general<lb/>
from North Carolina.<lb/>
Mclver's manuscripts, housed<lb/>
in ECU's Special Collections, are<lb/>
the subject of a book that Dembo<lb/>
edited, A Life of Duty: The Autobi-<lb/>
ography of George H'illcox Mclver,<lb/>
1858-1947 (2006, The History<lb/>
Press). The autobiography offers<lb/>
a first-hand account of life as a<lb/>
career soldier during the transfor-<lb/>
mative period in American history<lb/>
between the Civil War and World<lb/>
War II.<lb/>
In World War I the English<lb/>
and French forces were at a vir-<lb/>
tual stalemate in Western Europe<lb/>
against the Germans. The trench<lb/>
warfare was costly and ineffective<lb/>
on both sides in trying to gain<lb/>
ground. England was cut off from<lb/>
its colonies by German submarines,<lb/>
called U-boats, which sank any ship<lb/>
that came near England w ith food<lb/>
and supplies. A German U-boat is<lb/>
believed to have sunk the Lusitania,<lb/>
which drew the United States into<lb/>
the war.<lb/>
To make matters worse for the<lb/>
English and French, Russia suc-<lb/>
cumbed to the Bolshevik Revolu-<lb/>
tion meaning that Germany would<lb/>
no longer have to fight the Russians<lb/>
on the East and the English and<lb/>
French in the West. Germany<lb/>
could not concentrate all of its mili-<lb/>
tary might on the Western Front.<lb/>
When the U.S. entered the war,<lb/>
the English and French suggested<lb/>
that the new American troops<lb/>
should fight in English and French<lb/>
infantry units. U.S. General John<lb/>
Pershing decided against this.<lb/>
U.S. tactics, which were developed<lb/>
In part by Mclver, helped the U.S.<lb/>
turn the tide against Germany.<lb/>
Mclver was issued a preferred<lb/>
citation for leading attacks against<lb/>
the Germans in 1918, just before<lb/>
Germany surrendered.<lb/>
Mclver was born in Carthage,<lb/>
N.C in 1858. He died in 1947 at<lb/>
the age of 89. He is now buried in<lb/>
Arlington National Cemetery.<lb/>
In regards to the importance<lb/>
of Mclver's work, Dembo said,<lb/>
"There are a number of important<lb/>
passages and descriptions oflife on<lb/>
frontier posts<lb/>

'Murphy N.C. Zoo's weather-predict-<lb/>
ing groundhog, dies suddenly<lb/>
(AH)"Murphy a ground-<lb/>
hog who served as the North<lb/>
Carolina Zoo's ambassador and<lb/>
weather prognosticator after he<lb/>
was brought to the wildlife park<lb/>
as a foundling, died suddenly this<lb/>
weekend.<lb/>
The 4 '4-year-old groundhog<lb/>
had shown no signs of illness until<lb/>
Sunday, when he became lethargic<lb/>
and unresponsive, the zoo said<lb/>
Tuesday. He died that day at the<lb/>
Valerie H. Schindler Wildlife<lb/>
Rehabilitation Center.<lb/>
A necropsy performed Monday<lb/>
found tumors on Murphy's liver<lb/>
and nodules on his lungs, but the<lb/>
exact cause of his illness will not<lb/>
be known until pathological exams<lb/>
are completed in one to two weeks,<lb/>
the zoo said.<lb/>
Murphy was among the<lb/>
weather-predicting animals in<lb/>
North Carolina, including Lil'<lb/>
Bit, a pig from Lexington, and Sir<lb/>
Walter Wally, a groundhog from<lb/>
Raleigh, who joined Pennsylvania's<lb/>
legendary Punxsutawney Phil on<lb/>
Groundhog Day each February<lb/>
to predict whether more winter<lb/>
weather was on the way.<lb/>
He was brought to theSchindler<lb/>
center, which treats injured and<lb/>
orphaned native animals, in May<lb/>
2002 by someone who found him<lb/>
beside a busy road, the zoo said.<lb/>
The original plan was to return<lb/>
him to his natural habitat, but<lb/>
Murphy demonstrated no fear<lb/>
of humans, a necessary trait to<lb/>
survive in the wild.<lb/>
Instead, he began traveling to<lb/>
schools and events across the state<lb/>
as the zoo's ambassador.<lb/>
No decision has been made on a<lb/>
new ambassador, the zoo said.<lb/>
Mm accused in Parkway forest fire<lb/>
found not guilty<lb/>
(AP)A judge ruled a man did<lb/>
not intentionally start a fire that<lb/>
burned 1,100 acres of forest and<lb/>
forced the closing of a section of the<lb/>

Bedford County General<lb/>
District Judge Harold Black ruled<lb/>
Dennis Ham did not act with intent<lb/>
to start the fire when he dumped<lb/>
ashes from his wood stove in an<lb/>
ash pile on his Blue Ridge property<lb/>
on March 4.<lb/>
Ham was charged with care-<lb/>
lessly, negligently or intentionally<lb/>
setting a woodland fire.<lb/>
Black said prosecutors failed<lb/>
to prove Hani's actions showed a<lb/>
reckless disregard for human life.<lb/>

what it was, an accident Ham's<lb/>
attorney, Drew<lb/>

bench ruling. "What Dennis did<lb/>
was not criminal<lb/>
The fire quickly spread in<lb/>
Bedford and Botetourt coun-<lb/>
ties, eventually costing more<lb/>
than $700,000. The National<lb/>
Park Service and the Virginia<lb/>

spent about $90,000.<lb/>
The U.S. Forest Service<lb/>
will likely try to recover costs<lb/>

hiring him to kill her.<lb/>
Michael Kuhnhausen, 58, was<lb/>
charged Thursday with criminal<lb/>
conspiracy to commit murder and<lb/>
attempted murder.<lb/>
Detectives say Kuhnhausen<lb/>
let Edward Haffey into Susan<lb/>
Kuhnhausen's house. Detec-<lb/>
tives say he waited for Susan<lb/>
Kuhnhausen with a claw<lb/>
hammer to arrive home from her<lb/>
nursing job.<lb/>
Haffey struck her several<lb/>
times. According to a court affi-<lb/>
davit obtained by The Oregonian<lb/>
newspaper, she managed to take<lb/>
the hammer away. The intruder<lb/>
bit Kuhnhausen several times. She<lb/>
bit back.<lb/>
Finally, the 51-year-old<lb/>
woman was able to choke the life<lb/>
out of him.<lb/>
Portland Police found the<lb/>
59-year-old Haffey dead on the<lb/>
floor.<lb/>
Imprisoned Mayor Seeks Accrued<lb/>
Sick Pay<lb/>
The former mayor of Water-<lb/>
bury, Connecticut, forced out of<lb/>
office by a sex scandal, says the<lb/>
city owes him accrued sick and<lb/>
vacation time.<lb/>
Former Mayor Philip Giordano<lb/>
sent a letter to Mayor Michael Jar-<lb/>
jura's assistant seeking payout for<lb/>
13 weeks of vacation, 99 sick days<lb/>
and 27 personal days, the Water-<lb/>
bury Republican reported.<lb/>
The letter was sent from<lb/>
Giordano's current home, the<lb/>
Garner Correctional Facility<lb/>
in Newtown, Conn, where he's<lb/>
serving 37 years to life on federal<lb/>
civil rights charges. He still faces<lb/>
a state trial for allegedly molesting<lb/>
two girls in his office.<lb/>
Giordano wrote it is an estab-<lb/>
lished practice for public officials<lb/>
to accrue vacation, sick leave and<lb/>
personal days. But other mayors<lb/>
have not received the benefit, the<lb/>
report said.<lb/>
Former Mayor Edward Bergin<lb/>
called Giordano's request "outra-<lb/>
geous" and former Mayor Joseph<lb/>
San Pietro, who served seven years<lb/>
in office before being imprisoned<lb/>
on corruption charges, did not seek<lb/>
accrued pay.<lb/>

Be able to show that you can<lb/>
fix things that are broken. Not<lb/>
the leg of a table, but a system or<lb/>
process that can be fixed forever.<lb/>
Very few people can do that, and<lb/>
even fewer can demonstrate it in<lb/>
a job interview.<lb/>
I was working with a kid on<lb/>
this. We talked a lot and it turned<lb/>
out that the mail delivery system<lb/>
in his college dorm was horrible.<lb/>
This kid wasn't one of the thou-<lb/>
sands who just complained about<lb/>
it. He rolled up his sleeves and<lb/>
went down to the mailroom, and<lb/>
within weeks it was fixed.<lb/>
That's something that doesn't<lb/>
go on your resume, but that you<lb/>
have to talk about because it gets<lb/>
employers fired up and makes<lb/>
them remember you.<lb/>
Q. What else should applicants<lb/>
try togetacrossduringan interview?<lb/>
Employers value people who<lb/>
can get things started. Show ini-<lb/>
tiative. Maybe you started your<lb/>
own business while in college<lb/>
or worked in an entrepreneurial<lb/>
environment. Talk about that.<lb/>
You don't have to be the guys<lb/>
who created Google. All you have<lb/>
to do is show that you took some<lb/>
initiative and were able to keep<lb/>
your grades going at the same<lb/>
time.I worked with a guy from the<lb/>
Midwest who grew up on a cattle<lb/>
farm, and what plagued folks<lb/>
there was being able to identify<lb/>
their cows, especially with scares<lb/>
about mad cow disease. Nowa-<lb/>
days they use all kinds of tags,<lb/>
like in the retail environment,<lb/>
to ID them. But the problem is<lb/>
you would have to be really close<lb/>
to the cow for the tag reader to<lb/>
work. He fooled around in a lab<lb/>
with a buddy trying to come up<lb/>
with ways to read the tags from<lb/>
a distance. He never let go of the<lb/>
idea he wrote a paper on it and<lb/>
presented it to a company. And<lb/>
at the age of 22 he got hired by<lb/>
them to work with a project team<lb/>
on finding a solution.<lb/>
It can be as simple as demon-<lb/>
strating an ability to think about<lb/>
ways to tackle problems.<lb/>

Not just for Pirate Rants <lb/>
Students not<lb/>
informed of<lb/>
chance to vote<lb/>
SGA class elections come and go,<lb/>
with few knowing they even took place<lb/>
ELIZABETH LAUTEN<lb/>
CONTRIBUTING WRITER<lb/>
I'm sure I'm with the majority of ECU students<lb/>
when I say that I had no idea that there were class<lb/>
elections for the Student Body yesterday. For the<lb/>
first year, I didn't see banners on campus urging<lb/>
me to vote in the elections, and if they were there,<lb/>
they were strategically hidden amongst the ones<lb/>
for Fraternity Rush. I also didn't get the multiple<lb/>
e-mails from the University reminding me of the<lb/>
upcoming elections that would be held on Onestop<lb/>
in the weeks prior to their taking place. How does<lb/>
the Student Government Association expect me to<lb/>
know about student elections of any sort if they don't<lb/>
even bother to tell me about them?<lb/>
It's ironic that the first time I got wind of said<lb/>
elections was through checking the Pirate Rants<lb/>
account, only to find multiple rants from disap- o<lb/>
pointed students complaining that there was not<lb/>
an election preview to be found in the paper this<lb/>
semester. Every other fall, the East Carolinian pub-<lb/>
lishes information about the respective candidates<lb/>
and their stances on issues important to them. This<lb/>
year however, the student body was not informed of<lb/>
any of the candidate's many platforms by the paper.<lb/>
I can't help but wonder, how the SGA President,<lb/>
M. Cole Jones, now in his second term could have<lb/>
allowed such an oversight. I understand there is an<lb/>
obligation for the paper to inform the campus of news<lb/>
relevant to the student population, but if the paper<lb/>
isn't informed about the details of an event, how can<lb/>
they possibly have someone report on it? Such an<lb/>
oversight could have been written off as part of Jones'<lb/>
learning curve in his first term, but now it seems<lb/>
to me a poor planning and a lack of follow through.<lb/>
And who's left to suffer from this grievous<lb/>
error? None other than the student body of course.<lb/>
Not only did students lose their right to vote in<lb/>
the election, but also this could adversely affect<lb/>
the campus in the year to come, as candidates were<lb/>
elected to office without giving the student body<lb/>
any real sense of what they stood for or for their<lb/>
plans for the upcoming year. Instead the elections<lb/>
were left to chance and a mere popularity contest.<lb/>
But what can we as the student body do now?<lb/>
Sit back and let the year past, hoping the best can-<lb/>
didates won? Demand a re-election, forcing the<lb/>
SGA to supply information on their candidates? I<lb/>
know that a national election would not be deemed<lb/>
acceptable without the public not only having access<lb/>
to candidate platforms but also general election<lb/>
information such as time and date. And so I'm not<lb/>
sure what the best solution is at this point to the<lb/>
situation at hand, but 1 do know that if nothing else<lb/>
the student body needs to realize just how much the<lb/>
SGA has the ability to change, and demand informa-<lb/>
tion in future semesters.<lb/>

CONEJMOI<lb/>
THOSE<lb/>
Live with<lb/>
roommates or<lb/>
just live alone?<lb/>
AARON BORREGO<lb/>
OPINION WRITER<lb/>
The same routine is repeated out every year by mil-<lb/>
lions around the globe: Want ads stating "Looking for<lb/>
roommates With this ritual, there shall be new cases<lb/>
of the roommate horror story for many people being<lb/>
mapped as the signatures go upon the dotted lines of<lb/>
a well-crafted lease.<lb/>
So many things to consider when looking for the<lb/>
next potential roommate such as: Are they nice, friendly,<lb/>
cool, not cool, annoying, dependable, lazy, neat, messy,<lb/>
like me, weird, outgoing, quiet, respectful, courteous,<lb/>
smelly, happy, on drugs, drinkers, smokers, pet owners,<lb/>
mean, crazy or even the dreaded bossy. It seems there<lb/>
is way too much too say with so little time to find out<lb/>
about what the potential roommates are truly like.<lb/>
This obliviously can get a bit monotonous and over-<lb/>
whelming, but honestly do you even need a roommate?<lb/>
One would deduce that the only way to avoid problems<lb/>
with roommates is either to have an ironclad understand-<lb/>
ing that you are in charge or not to have roommates<lb/>
at all. Living alone and living with others both have<lb/>
benefits and problems associated with the situations,<lb/>
but maybe we can make some sense of these choices.<lb/>
When it comes to living with roommates, many<lb/>
wonderful things can come of this such as new friends,<lb/>
plenty of social contact, people able to help you with<lb/>
things and even the bills being split in a few directions.<lb/>
This option is a good idea if you keep a few things in<lb/>
mind: You can't change people, don't tread on people's<lb/>
personal ground and just basic planning and being on<lb/>
the same page.<lb/>
Most problems come from the simple fact that<lb/>
people get roommates based on if they like the person<lb/>
as opposed to if they are compatible with them. In<lb/>
example, say you and your friend since childhood get<lb/>
a two bedroom apartment. Well if you are a neat freak<lb/>
and your friend has clothes in the common living area<lb/>
that are so dirty they could almost walk away, this<lb/>
could be a problem waiting to destroy a friendship.<lb/>
Or.what happens if you are a super religious person<lb/>
and your new roommate is completely against any<lb/>
adherence to religion or God? This can be a bit of<lb/>
an issue, but most people are open and understand<lb/>
to others views as long as they don't try to convert<lb/>
people to their own personal choices on how to live<lb/>
life. The biggest thing you can remember in this<lb/>
situation is to be respectful of other people and real-<lb/>
ize that in no way should you want to change them.<lb/>
The splitting the bills thing is a bit of an ordeal, but<lb/>
I must say can be a great situation for money conserva-<lb/>
tion. However, it only becomes a problem when people<lb/>
don't pay up. So if you are one of those, save everyone<lb/>
else around you and just keep your bills to yourself and<lb/>
don't try to split it. These people should try living alone<lb/>
and being able to be responsible enough to pay your bills.<lb/>
Well, when it comes to living alone, I think it is<lb/>
great. I think this is a better situation for people who<lb/>
actually enjoy their solitude and enjoy knowing where<lb/>
the mess and problems come from. When you live<lb/>
by yourself, the bills and responsibility to pay them<lb/>
does completely fall on you but at least you know<lb/>
where everything is going. You would also know who<lb/>
is making the mess and who needs to clean it up in<lb/>
this arrangement. This is also great for people who<lb/>
don't like being disturbed at all hours of the night<lb/>
because your roommate can't hold their sauce properly.<lb/>
You don't have to deal with anyone if you don't<lb/>
want to, but at the same time you miss out on so<lb/>
many great things about people and their person-<lb/>
alities. You could be avoiding your next best friend<lb/>
or significant other. I must say, that boys and girls<lb/>
living together, is a bad idea unless they are married<lb/>
or have been seriously involved for quite some time.<lb/>
One sentence can sum this up: Girls try to take<lb/>
everything over and guys don't take time to listen or<lb/>
attempt what women ask of us. Sometimes it works out<lb/>
perfectly, but normally too many strong personalities<lb/>
don't mix. I guess it is because neither side is willing to<lb/>
listen or admit being wrong, but everyone does that.<lb/>
In the end, everything works out if you are willing<lb/>
to keep an open mind and willing to compromise with<lb/>
people. Not everyone is out there to mess your stuff up<lb/>
but, it can happen. I hope that when this comes up for<lb/>
everyone, they take into account a few things I have<lb/>
talked about, or not. Either way, I have been there and<lb/>
done both!<lb/>
PIRATE RANTS<lb/>
We are out of toilet paper, and<lb/>
its my turn to buy. just keep<lb/>
using the paper towels roomie,<lb/>
I swear I'll buy it soon.<lb/>
Greenville City parking meters<lb/>
charge 25 cents for an hour.<lb/>
ECU parking meters charge<lb/>
25 cents for the big fifteen<lb/>
minutes. It's a parking cartel.<lb/>
I truly believe that ECU is<lb/>
underestimated as a football<lb/>
team, and that if they lay it all<lb/>
on the line they can achieve<lb/>
victory over West Virginia. Show<lb/>
them just what an underdog<lb/>
can do!<lb/>
There is a professor in my<lb/>
program of study in Brewster<lb/>
that could definitely pass as<lb/>
Ron Jeremy's brother. I am<lb/>
sure he is around polluting<lb/>
young minds about his dirty<lb/>
profession.<lb/>
How am I supposed to wear<lb/>
Purple on Friday if the Student<lb/>
irate Club still hasn't given me<lb/>
that purple shirt?!<lb/>
I really believe that the<lb/>
Mendenhall computer lab<lb/>
people are extremely rude or<lb/>
just the particular girl I spoke<lb/>
with. I do believe there is<lb/>
inconsistency in the lab officials<lb/>
down there. I would rather go<lb/>
across campus to other better<lb/>
labs than that dungeon.<lb/>
Thanks to your whining, it is now<lb/>
hot in Fleming! I was perfectly<lb/>
fine with the temperature in the<lb/>

Trust me, you don't have to<lb/>
drive 30 mph through my<lb/>
neighborhood there are kids<lb/>

A 64 percent class average on<lb/>
the first test should tell the<lb/>
teacher something, right?!<lb/>
Greenville drivers are the worst!<lb/>
You're not invincible, so stop<lb/>
acting like it!<lb/>
Whatever happened to those<lb/>
militant black-clad preachers<lb/>
that used to scream at us on the'<lb/>

Know what the greatest feeling<lb/>

horse licking your throat. I swear.<lb/>
To the girl who just got a job at<lb/>
McDonalds and is ashamed to<lb/>
tell her sorority sisters, hello?<lb/>
This is a very good indication<lb/>
of what kind of people you<lb/>
surround yourself with. Most<lb/>
likely those girls wouldn't know<lb/>
a job if it slapped them up side<lb/>
of their make-up caked faces.<lb/>
You are being responsible and<lb/>
learning how to take care of<lb/>
yourself instead of relying on<lb/>
your parents for everything,<lb/>
good for you!<lb/>
Kudos to the ranter who dogged<lb/>
the horoscopes, which are a<lb/>
waste of ink! Is anyone here<lb/>
really dumb enough to seek<lb/>
guidance from one of those?<lb/>
I am going to kill my roommate<lb/>
if she doesn't get some cough<lb/>

Funny, both the classes I have<lb/>

Well we won the game! Good<lb/>
thing too, because if I lost my<lb/>

Rain, rain go away! Come back<lb/>

You know what would be great?<lb/>
If Java City wasn't pretty much<lb/>
the only coffee available on<lb/>

asically the most disgusting<lb/>
coffee ever. If you can call it<lb/>
that.<lb/>
Everyone complains about<lb/>
everything but no one takes the<lb/>
time to find a solution what's<lb/>
up with that?!<lb/>
You are really lazy if you can't<lb/>
even walk from the hill to<lb/>
central campus. Get off your<lb/>

Funny how when someone's<lb/>

yell at them to turn it off, but<lb/>
you continue to talk the entire<lb/>
rest of class. Your mouth is<lb/>
just as big as a distraction as<lb/>
the phone. Do us all a favor<lb/>

Don't you hate it when you<lb/>
are in public and you can feel<lb/>
your nipple hanging out of your<lb/>

I think everyone's exhausted<lb/>
the bringing sexy back jokes.<lb/>
They were funny the first two<lb/>
or three times now, it's just<lb/>
getting old.<lb/>
Is it winter yet? Or at least<lb/>
mid-fall, I am so tired of this<lb/>
constant tease of cool weather<lb/>
only to be hit with another heat<lb/>
wave.<lb/>
Wings Over Greenville is the<lb/>
best food that is fast or so<lb/>
called fast food!<lb/>
People need to stop writing<lb/>
novels when writing pirate<lb/>
rants. It is a rant not a story<lb/>
that happened to you this<lb/>
week.<lb/>
to the guy who brings his<lb/>
computer to class just to look<lb/>
at his girlfriends pictures for<lb/>
the entire two hour class you<lb/>
make all of us sitting behind<lb/>
you want to throw up.<lb/>
My friends think it is weird<lb/>
that I come from the city and<lb/>
listen to country music. I may<lb/>
have lived in the city but I was<lb/>
brought up country! They know<lb/>
theylisten to it too but don't<lb/>
want others to know!<lb/>
To the girl in class that always<lb/>
has a bad attitude. Get over<lb/>
yourself. You make an enjoyable<lb/>
class miserable. Go away or<lb/>
cheer up. Life can't be that bad.<lb/>
To the person making fun of<lb/>
the sorority "pledge please<lb/>
don't act like when you were a<lb/>
freshman you weren't excited<lb/>
to go downtown. On a second<lb/>
note, not every sorority girl is<lb/>
like that. Don't act like you<lb/>
know what you're talking about<lb/>
unless you've been in that<lb/>
person's shoes, you don't know.<lb/>
Quit judging.<lb/>
To the hot chicks in my classes.<lb/>

Josh Hartnett, Aaron Eckhart and Scarlett Johansson shown in a scene from the new film The Black Dahlia.<lb/>
Confusing film doesn't<lb/>
live up to expectations<lb/>
BEN HARRIS<lb/>
STAFF WRITER<lb/>
As an avid movie lover, I always<lb/>
try to see at least one new release<lb/>
per weekend. For the past couple<lb/>
of months, with the exception of<lb/>
Pirates of the Caribbean 'J and Super-<lb/>
man Returns, the movies I have<lb/>
seen have left a lot to be desired.<lb/>
I was beginning to think that,<lb/>
like Keith Richards, this streak<lb/>
of wasted money would never die.<lb/>
Then The Black Dahlia came along.<lb/>
I heard a lot of great buzz about<lb/>
the movie and the film offered a<lb/>
great promise of freeing me from<lb/>
the realm of overused plots and<lb/>
terrible "acting The Black Dahlia<lb/>
is based on the book of the same<lb/>
title, which deals with the 1946<lb/>
killing of small time Hollywood<lb/>
actress Klizabeth Short. When I<lb/>
say "based I use the term loosely<lb/>
because besides a few details of the<lb/>
actual murder, the movie is largely<lb/>
fictional. The major complaint 1<lb/>
have is that the film starts off very<lb/>
slow and overdoes trying to set up<lb/>
the story.<lb/>
It isn't until a fourth of the<lb/>
way into the movie that the body<lb/>
of Short is even found. The slow<lb/>
pace continues for the better part<lb/>
of the movie until the end when<lb/>
the action really gets good and the<lb/>
movie shows its true strength. I'm<lb/>
not one for describing scenes for<lb/>
the purpose of not wanting to ruin<lb/>
any part of the movie, but I can<lb/>
promise that the final part of the<lb/>
film is sure to keep the moviegoer's<lb/>
eyes glued to the screen.<lb/>
The other two problems I saw<lb/>
with the film are the facts that<lb/>
the film is generally confusing<lb/>
up until the end and that the film<lb/>
really focuses little on the murder<lb/>
itself. The film goes back and forth<lb/>
between different stories with little<lb/>
explanation, and after an hour<lb/>
and a half of this, I was left very<lb/>
confused and I really had no idea<lb/>
what was going on. Everything<lb/>
isn't explained until the end and<lb/>
it's really left up to the viewer to<lb/>
last that long.<lb/>
For $7.50, I'm more than will-<lb/>
ing to sit through anything until<lb/>
the end, so those clever, evil film-<lb/>
makers got me on this one. The<lb/>
Black Dahlia murder itself is<lb/>
touched upon very little in the<lb/>
movie. Aside from the occasional<lb/>
five minute scene of the detectives<lb/>
looking at old video footage of<lb/>
Short, I really got nothing about<lb/>
the murder until the very end.<lb/>
Instead, the film focuses on differ-<lb/>
ent aspects of the main characters'<lb/>
lives.<lb/>
The film is the latest from leg-<lb/>
endary director Brian De Palma,<lb/>
who brought us the classics includ-<lb/>
ing Scarface, Mission Impossible and,<lb/>
my favorite, The Untouchables. De<lb/>
Palma does an excellent job of<lb/>
giving the movie an "old-timey"<lb/>
feel by the way he presents the<lb/>
story. The viewers cannot help but<lb/>
feel as if they are actually watch-<lb/>
ing a movie from the 1940s. De<lb/>
Indie-Folk rocker puts out new album<lb/>
M. Ward's new album<lb/>
called 'Post War'<lb/>
LLOYD NEWMAN<lb/>
STAFF WRITER<lb/>
Post-War marks Matt Ward's<lb/>
well-publicized first attempt at<lb/>
streamlining the sprawling, dra-<lb/>
matic records he has become<lb/>
known for. Never before has he<lb/>
surrounded himself with such<lb/>
talent, backed by a full band that<lb/>
includes My Morning Jacket front<lb/>
man Jim James, Saddle Creek's<lb/>
resident multi-instrumentalist<lb/>
Mike Mogis and the popular song-<lb/>
stress Neko Case. The result is a<lb/>
record that sacrifices theme and<lb/>
mood for a more accessible and<lb/>
concise affair, with mixed results.<lb/>
Structurally, it's his shortest<lb/>
record to date, shaving four songs<lb/>
and five minutes off of Ward's<lb/>
previous shortest, 2005s fantastic<lb/>
Transistor Radio, a difference that<lb/>
initially goes unnoticed, but even-<lb/>
tually becomes achingly apparent.<lb/>
Musically, Ward embraces the<lb/>
opportunities afforded by the new<lb/>
band, deviating somewhat from<lb/>
the often difficult arrangements<lb/>
of his past.<lb/>
Among the things unchanged<lb/>
is M. Ward's unique, reverb-<lb/>
drenched voice, which again acts<lb/>
as a musical focal point. Equal<lb/>
parts Tom Waits, Bruce Springs-<lb/>
teen and Jeff Tweedy, it manages<lb/>
to be gruff and creaky in such a<lb/>
way that teeters between confi-<lb/>
dence and collapse.<lb/>
It's oddly reassuring, and<lb/>
lends an added degree of authen-<lb/>
ticity and old-worldly experience<lb/>
to Post-War's words.<lb/>
Those words find themselves<lb/>
continuously focused on the dark<lb/>
side of love, often lamenting<lb/>
heartbreak, rejection and loss,<lb/>
and sometimes turning angry.<lb/>
"What do you do with the pieces<lb/>
of a broken heart?" Ward asks on<lb/>
"Chinese Translation a tender,<lb/>
but fast-paced number that dis-<lb/>
solves into a sublime instrumental<lb/>
that highlights his trademark<lb/>
finger-picked acoustic guitar.<lb/>
The exception, and the album's<lb/>
Palma sets up most of the movie<lb/>
to take place at night, therefore<lb/>
doing an excellent job convey-<lb/>
ing a feeling of gloom, evil and<lb/>
desperation. When I see a movie,<lb/>
the very first thing I notice is the<lb/>
acting. I've noticed one reason for<lb/>
the overwhelmingly positive buzz<lb/>
about the movie is that it boasts a<lb/>
very impressive cast. Hollywood<lb/>
beauty and Lost in Translation star<lb/>
Scarlett Johansson, Pearl Harbor's<lb/>
Josh Hartnett, Thank Toufor Not<lb/>
Smoking's Aaron Eckhart and two-<lb/>
time Oscar winner Hilary Swank<lb/>
represent the core, but not neces-<lb/>
sarily the best part of the cast. Mia<lb/>
Kirshner plays Elizabeth Short,<lb/>
a.k.a. "The Black Dahlia Kirshner<lb/>
is stunningly beautiful and in my<lb/>
opinion, outdoes every other actor<lb/>
in the movie. I will certainly pay<lb/>
attention to Kirshner in the future<lb/>
not only for her looks but for her<lb/>
overwhelming talent as well.<lb/>
Veteran actress Fiona Shaw<lb/>
also does an excellent job playing<lb/>
a mentally disturbed, drugged-up<lb/>
socialite. It wouldn't be surprising<lb/>
to see Kirshner and Shaw come<lb/>
out with Best Supporting Actress<lb/>
nominations for their roles, with<lb/>
Kirshner possibly getting a win.<lb/>
As for the opposite end of the<lb/>
spectrum, Johansson and Swank,<lb/>
whom you would normally expect<lb/>
wonderful performances out of,<lb/>
leave a lot to be desired. Johansson<lb/>
barely has a part and therefore is<lb/>
severely underused for an actress<lb/>
of her talent. Swank is in dire<lb/>

Making himself known in the world we<lb/>

KORRI-LEE SMITH<lb/>
STAFF WRITER<lb/>
Joshua Daniel Hartnett was born July 21, 1978 in<lb/>
San Francisco, Calif. Shortly after his birth, his parents<lb/>
moved him and his three younger siblings to St. Paul,<lb/>
Minn, where he was raised and educated. Despite his<lb/>
undeniable talent. Josh wasn't always an aspiring actor.<lb/>
In fact, Hartnett wasn't even interested in acting until<lb/>
an injury kept him off of his high school football team.<lb/>
Disappointed, his aunt encouraged him to get involved<lb/>
by auditioning for the school play. As luck would have<lb/>
it, Hartnett landed the lead role and discovered a pas-<lb/>
sion for acting.<lb/>
Following his 1996 high school graduation, Hartnett<lb/>
traveled to the east coast where he attended State Uni-<lb/>
versity of New York at Purchase. His time there ended<lb/>
in April of 1997 when he was offered the role of Michael<lb/>
Fitzgerald in the short-lived television series "Cracker<lb/>
After doing a number of TV commercials and plays,<lb/>
Hartnett finally received his big break in Halloween H20:<lb/>
20 Tears Later. Though the movie received poor reviews,<lb/>
Hartnett was an instant hit with audiences.<lb/>
Since he entered the scene, Hartnett has worked<lb/>
nonstop at building his career. Over the course of nearly<lb/>
a decade, Hartnett has worked on over 20 movie produc-<lb/>
tions and has earned himself several award nominations.<lb/>

JOHN BOSCO<lb/>
STAFF WRITER<lb/>
When I first heard Bob Dylan<lb/>
was releasing a new album, I was<lb/>
very hesitant to listen to it. I love<lb/>
Bob Dylan just as much as the<lb/>
next guy - OK, maybe more than<lb/>
the next guy. But the truth of the<lb/>
matter is that I haven't fallen in<lb/>
love with any of his albums after<lb/>
1975's Blood on the Tracks, so I was<lb/>
surprised when I put the CD in and<lb/>
heard a blues sound from Dylan<lb/>
that really stuck with me.<lb/>
Undoubtedly, the best thing<lb/>
about this album is its bluesy,<lb/>
twangy arrangements combined<lb/>
with Dylan's old, wise, raspy<lb/>
vocals. All of the up-tempo tracks<lb/>
on this record are great; "Thun-<lb/>
der on the Mountain "Rollin'<lb/>
and Tumblin "Someday Baby"<lb/>
and "The Levee's Gonna Break"<lb/>
showcase Dylan's skill at crafting<lb/>
12-bar blues riffs and lyrics that<lb/>
will take you back to his music<lb/>
from the 1960s. As for the other<lb/>
half of the album (what I'm call-<lb/>
ing the "slower" tracks), I think<lb/>
Dylan could have fine-tuned some<lb/>
of them.<lb/>
The only two slower tunes that<lb/>
I think are brilliant in a Bob-kind<lb/>
of way are "Nettie Moore which<lb/>
showcases a percussion section<lb/>
that balances out an acoustic<lb/>
guitar, and "Ain't Talkin which<lb/>
really feels like a classic Dylan<lb/>
tune as soon as you hear it.<lb/>
As for the other tracks, they<lb/>
sort of just float around. Yes, they<lb/>
have their moments too, but they<lb/>
don't really give me anything that<lb/>
I can leave the song with; they<lb/>
aren't really that impressive.<lb/>
But Modern Times has been<lb/>
getting a lot of press and it's actu-<lb/>
ally already reached number one<lb/>
on the billboard charts - a feat<lb/>
sure to keep a smirk on Dylan's<lb/>
mysterious, old face. While numer-<lb/>
ous music publications and people<lb/>
I know have been hailing it as the<lb/>
best album of the year or even the<lb/>
best that Dylan has ever sounded<lb/>
on an album, I'd have to disagree.<lb/>
I can name at least five albums<lb/>
released this year that Modern<lb/>
Times doesn't even compete with.<lb/>
And though Dylan sounds great<lb/>
on Modern Times, this is hardly his<lb/>
prime - the 1960s were huge for<lb/>
Dylan and he sounded great.<lb/>
What I can say about this<lb/>
album is that it's his best sounding<lb/>
release since 1975's Blood on the<lb/>
Tracks. This album is definitely<lb/>
a major breakthrough for Dylan,<lb/>
whose 1980 and 1990s' track<lb/>
record left a lot of people wonder-<lb/>
ing if he was getting over the hill.<lb/>
When you look at the big<lb/>
picture, six out of 10 songs aren't<lb/>
just good, they're really good. So<lb/>
why the 'OK' review?<lb/>
The album is getting too much<lb/>
praise, I think. This is a great<lb/>
album for Dylan, but he's capable<lb/>
of something greater. Blonde on<lb/>
Blonde, Bringing It All Back Home,<lb/>
and Highway 61 Revisited were all<lb/>
perfect albums, masterpieces that<lb/>
don't have a few tracks you can<lb/>
ignore. Fen when reinventing<lb/>
his sound on albums like Blood<lb/>
on the Tracks, he pulls of a mas-<lb/>
terpiece that knocks the ball out<lb/>
of the park.<lb/>
I know that Dylan is capable of<lb/>
perfection but he's delivering just<lb/>
shy of it. But maybe that's because<lb/>
1 inherited a sound of Dylan that<lb/>
doesn't quite match the way he<lb/>
sounded in the 1960s, a sound that<lb/>
had a pretty big imprint on popular<lb/>
music of the time and thereafter.<lb/>
So, my biggest complaint<lb/>
about this album is that the songs<lb/>
lack a good, solid flow. They're all<lb/>
decent tracks, some are even great,<lb/>
but the album doesn't really play<lb/>
through that way; weaker tracks<lb/>
get in the way of really great<lb/>
ones and it sort of flips and flops,<lb/>
in and out of brilliance. Track to<lb/>
track, this album is failing, but<lb/>
individually, these songs stand<lb/>
out as pretty good work for a guy<lb/>
everyone thought was burnt out.<lb/>

BEN HARRIS<lb/>
STAFF WRITER<lb/>
As an avid movie lover, I always<lb/>
try to see at least one new release<lb/>
per weekend. For the past couple<lb/>
of months, with the exception of<lb/>
Pirales of the Caribbean a and Super-<lb/>
man Returns, the movies 1 have<lb/>
seen have left a lot to be desired.<lb/>
I was beginning to think that,<lb/>
like Keith Richards, this streak<lb/>
of wasted money would never die.<lb/>
Then The Black Dahlia came along.<lb/>
I heard a lot of great buzz about<lb/>
the movie and the film offered a<lb/>
great promise of freeing me from<lb/>
the realm of overused plots and<lb/>
terrible "acting The Black Dahlia<lb/>
is based on the book of the same<lb/>
title, which deals with the 1946<lb/>
killing of small time Hollywood<lb/>
actress Elizabeth Short. When I<lb/>
say "based I use the term loosely<lb/>
because besides a few details of the<lb/>
actual murder, the movie is largely<lb/>
fictional. The major complaint I<lb/>
have is that the film starts off very<lb/>
slow and overdoes trying to set up<lb/>
the story.<lb/>
It isn't until a fourth of the<lb/>
way into the movie that the body<lb/>
of Short is even found. The slow<lb/>
pace continues for the better part<lb/>
of the movie until the end when<lb/>
the action really gets good and the<lb/>
movie shows its true strength. I'm<lb/>
not one for describing scenes for<lb/>
the purpose of not wanting to ruin<lb/>
any part of the movie, but I can<lb/>
promise that the final part of the<lb/>
film is sure to keep the moviegoer's<lb/>
eyes glued to the screen.<lb/>
The other two problems I saw<lb/>
with the film are the facts that<lb/>
the film is generally confusing<lb/>
up until the end and that the film<lb/>
really focuses little on the murder<lb/>
itself. The film goes back and forth<lb/>
between different stories with little<lb/>
explanation, and after an hour<lb/>
and a half of this, I was left very<lb/>
confused and I really had no idea<lb/>
what was going on. Everything<lb/>
isn't explained until the end and<lb/>
it's really left up to the viewer to<lb/>
last that long.<lb/>
For $7.50, I'm more than will-<lb/>
ing to sit through anything until<lb/>
the end, so those clever, evil film-<lb/>
makers got me on this one. The<lb/>
Black Dahlia murder itself is<lb/>
touched upon very little in the<lb/>
movie. Aside from the occasional<lb/>
five minute scene of the detectives<lb/>
looking at old video footage of<lb/>
Short, I really got nothing about<lb/>
the murder until the very end.<lb/>
Instead, the film focuses on differ-<lb/>
ent aspects of the main characters'<lb/>
lives.<lb/>
The film is the latest from leg-<lb/>
endary director Brian De Palma,<lb/>
who brought us the classics includ-<lb/>
ing Scarface, Mission Impossible and,<lb/>
my favorite, The Untouchables. De<lb/>
Palma does an excellent job of<lb/>
giving the movie an "old-timey"<lb/>
feel by the way he presents the<lb/>
story. The viewers cannot help but<lb/>
feel as if they are actually watch-<lb/>
ing a movie from the 1940s. De<lb/>
Palma sets up most of the movie<lb/>
to take place at night, therefore<lb/>
doing an excellent job convey-<lb/>
ing a feeling of gloom, evil and<lb/>
desperation. When I see a movie,<lb/>
the very first thing I notice is the<lb/>
acting. I've noticed one reason for<lb/>
the overwhelmingly positive buzz<lb/>
about the movie is that it boasts a<lb/>
very impressive cast. Hollywood<lb/>
beauty and Lost in Translation star<lb/>
Scarlett Johansson, Pearl Harbor's<lb/>
Josh Hartnett, Thank You for Not<lb/>
Smoking's Aaron Eckhart and two-<lb/>
time Oscar winner Hilary Swank<lb/>
represent the core, but not neces-<lb/>
sarily the best part of the cast. Mia<lb/>
Kirshner plays Elizabeth Short,<lb/>
a.k.a. "The Black Dahlia Kirshner<lb/>
is stunningly beautiful and in my<lb/>
opinion, outdoes every other actor<lb/>
in the movie. I will certainly pay<lb/>
attention to Kirshner in the future<lb/>
not only for her looks but for her<lb/>
overwhelming talent as well.<lb/>
Veteran actress Fiona Shaw<lb/>
also does an excellent job playing<lb/>
a mentally disturbed, drugged-up<lb/>
socialite. It wouldn't be surprising<lb/>
to see Kirshner and Shaw come<lb/>
out with Best Supporting Actress<lb/>
nominations for their roles, with<lb/>
Kirshner possibly getting a win.<lb/>
As for the opposite end of the<lb/>
spectrum, Johansson and Swank,<lb/>
whom you would normally expect<lb/>
wonderful performances out of,<lb/>
leave a lot to be desired. Johansson<lb/>
barely has a part and therefore is<lb/>
severely underused for an actress<lb/>
of her talent. Swank is in dire<lb/>

Making himself known in the world we<lb/>

KORRI-LEE SMITH<lb/>
STAFF WRITER<lb/>
Joshua Daniel Hartnett was born July 21, 1H7H in<lb/>
San Francisco, Calif. Shortly after his birth, his parents<lb/>
moved him and his three younger siblings to St. Paul,<lb/>
Minn, where he was raised and educated. Despite his<lb/>
undeniable talent, Josh wasn't always an aspiring actor.<lb/>
Hartnett finally received his big break in Halloween HSO:<lb/>
20 Tears Later. Though the movie received poor reviews,<lb/>
Hartnett was an instant hit with audiences.<lb/>
Since he entered the scene, Hartnett has worked<lb/>
nonstop at building his career. Over the course of nearly<lb/>
a decade, Hartnett has worked on over 20 movie produc-<lb/>

LLOYD NEWMAN<lb/>
STAFF WRITER<lb/>
Post-H'ar marks Matt Ward's<lb/>
well-publicized first attempt at<lb/>
streamlining the sprawling, dra-<lb/>
matic records he has become<lb/>
known for. Never before has he<lb/>
surrounded himself with such<lb/>
talent, backed by a full band that<lb/>
includes My Morning Jacket front<lb/>
man Jim James, Saddle Creek's<lb/>
resident multi-instrumentalist<lb/>
Mike Mogis and the popular song-<lb/>
stress Neko Case. The result is a<lb/>
record that sacrifices theme and<lb/>
mood for a more accessible and<lb/>
concise affair, with mixed results.<lb/>
Structurally, it's his shortest<lb/>
record to date, shaving four songs<lb/>
and five minutes off of Ward's<lb/>
previous shortest, 2005s fantastic<lb/>
Transistor Radio, a difference that<lb/>
initially goes unnoticed, but even-<lb/>
tually becomes achingly apparent.<lb/>
Musically, Ward embraces the<lb/>
opportunities afforded by the new<lb/>
band, deviating somewhat from<lb/>
the often difficult arrangements<lb/>
of his past.<lb/>
Among the things unchanged<lb/>
is M. Ward's unique, reverb-<lb/>
drenched voice, which again acts<lb/>
as a musical focal point. Equal<lb/>
parts Tom Waits, Bruce Springs-<lb/>
teen and Jeff Tweedy, it manages<lb/>
to be gruff and creaky in such a<lb/>
way that teeters between confi-<lb/>
dence and collapse.<lb/>
It's oddly reassuring, and<lb/>
lends an added degree of authen-<lb/>
ticity and old-worldly experience<lb/>
to Post-War's words.<lb/>
Those words find themselves<lb/>
continuously focused on the dark<lb/>
side of love, often lamenting<lb/>
heartbreak, rejection and loss,<lb/>
and sometimes turning angry.<lb/>
"What do you do with the pieces<lb/>
of a broken heart?" Ward asks on<lb/>
"Chinese Translation a tender,<lb/>

'Modern Times'<lb/>
is a major success<lb/>
for Bob Dylan<lb/>
JOHN BOSCO<lb/>
STAFF WRITER<lb/>
When I first heard Bob Dylan<lb/>
was releasing a new album, I was<lb/>
very hesitant to listen to it. I love<lb/>
Bob Dylan just as much as the<lb/>
next guy - OK, maybe more than<lb/>
the next guy. But the truth of the<lb/>
matter is that I haven't fallen in<lb/>
love with any of his albums after<lb/>
197S's Blood on the Tracks, so I was<lb/>
surprised when I put the CD in and<lb/>
heard a blues sound from Dylan<lb/>
that really stuck with me.<lb/>
Undoubtedly, the best thing<lb/>
about this album is its bluesy,<lb/>
twangy arrangements combined<lb/>
with Dylan's old, wise, raspy<lb/>
vocals. All of the up-tempo tracks<lb/>
on this record are great; "Thun-<lb/>
der on the Mountain "Rollin'<lb/>
and Tumblin "Someday Baby"<lb/>
and "The Levee's Gonna Break"<lb/>
showcase Dylan's skill at crafting<lb/>
12-bar blues riffs and lyrics that<lb/>
will take you back to his music<lb/>
from the 1960s. As for the other<lb/>
half of the album (what I'm call-<lb/>
ing the "slower" tracks), I think<lb/>
Dylan could have fine-tuned some<lb/>
of them.<lb/>
The only two slower tunes that<lb/>
I think are brilliant in a Bob-kind<lb/>
of way are "Nettie Moore which<lb/>
showcases a percussion section<lb/>
that balances out an acoustic<lb/>
guitar, and "Ain't Talkin which<lb/>
really feels like a classic Dylan<lb/>
tune as soon as you hear it.<lb/>
As for the other tracks, they<lb/>
sort ofjust float around. Yes, they<lb/>
have their moments too, but they<lb/>
don't really give me anything that<lb/>
I can leave the song with; they<lb/>
aren't really that impressive.<lb/>
But Modern Times has been<lb/>
getting a lot of press and it's actu-<lb/>
ally already reached number one<lb/>
on the billboard charts - a feat<lb/>
sure to keep a smirk on Dylan's<lb/>
mysterious, old face. While numer-<lb/>
ous music publications and people<lb/>
h<lb/>
-V<lb/>
<lb/>
.V<lb/>
I know have been hailing it as the<lb/>
best album of the year or even the<lb/>
best that Dylan has ever sounded<lb/>
on an album, I'd have to disagree.<lb/>
I can name at least five albums<lb/>
released this year that Modern<lb/>
Times doesn't even compete with.<lb/>
And though Dylan sounds great<lb/>
on Modern Times, this is hardly his<lb/>
prime - the 1960s were huge for<lb/>
Dylan and he sounded great.<lb/>
What I can say about this<lb/>
album is that it's his best sounding<lb/>
release since 1975's Blood on the<lb/>
Tracks. This album is definitely<lb/>
a major breakthrough for Dylan,<lb/>
whose 1980 and 1990s' track<lb/>
record left a lot of people wonder-<lb/>
ing if he was getting over the hill<lb/>
When you look at the big<lb/>
picture, six out of 10 songs aren't<lb/>
just good, they're really good. So<lb/>
why the 'OK' review?<lb/>
The album is getting too much<lb/>
praise, I think. This is a great<lb/>
album for Dylan, but he's capable<lb/>
of something greater. Blonde on<lb/>
Blonde, Bringing It All Back Home,<lb/>
and Highway 61 Revisited were all<lb/>
perfect albums, masterpieces that<lb/>
don't have a few tracks you can<lb/>
ignore. Even when reinventing<lb/>
his sound on albums like Blood<lb/>
on the Tracks, he pulls of a mas-<lb/>
terpiece that knocks the ball out<lb/>
of the park.<lb/>
I know that Dylan is capable of<lb/>
perfection but he's delivering just<lb/>
shy of it. But maybe that's because<lb/>
I inherited a sound of Dylan that<lb/>
doesn't quite match the way he<lb/>
sounded in the 1960s, a sound that<lb/>
had a pretty big imprint on popular<lb/>
music of the time and thereafter.<lb/>
So, my biggest complaint<lb/>
about this album is that the songs<lb/>
lack a good, solid flow. They're all<lb/>
decent tracks, some are even great,<lb/>
but the album doesn't really play<lb/>
through that way; weaker tracks<lb/>
get in the way of really great<lb/>
ones and it sort of nips and flops,<lb/>
in and out of brilliance. Track to<lb/>
track, this album is failing, but<lb/>
individually, these songs stand<lb/>
out as pretty good work for a guy<lb/>
everyone thought was burnt out.<lb/>

HARTNETT<lb/>
continued from A6<lb/>
Some of his career highlights<lb/>
include The Virgin Suicides, Black<lb/>
Hawk Down and Pearl Harbor.<lb/>
Although Hartnett has<lb/>
become well known as a suc-<lb/>
cessful Hollywood figure, he<lb/>
insists he isn't going to let it get<lb/>
to him.<lb/>
"That's the thing about real<lb/>
movie stars that I'll never have.<lb/>
When real movie stars walk into<lb/>
a room, it's all about them. They<lb/>
know it and everybody else knows<lb/>
it. I like to fly under the radar.<lb/>
I try, anyway said Hartnett in<lb/>
a press interview. By the looks<lb/>
of things, it appears Hartnett is<lb/>
telling the truth. Despite the con-<lb/>
stant pressure to move, Hartnett<lb/>
is adamant about staying in his<lb/>
home state of Minnesota to avoid<lb/>
the glare of paparazzi.<lb/>
In his most recent film, Hart-<lb/>
nett plays an overzealous cop<lb/>
obsessed with the Black Dahlia<lb/>
murder case. The movie itself<lb/>
is an adaptation of the novel<lb/>
"Black Dahlia" by James Ellroy.<lb/>
Hartnett's character, Bucky Ble-<lb/>
ichert, is a complex figure unde-<lb/>
niably passionate about his work.<lb/>
In a press interview from the<lb/>
premiere of Universal Pictures'<lb/>
The Black Dahlia, Hartnett talks<lb/>
about bringing the novel to the<lb/>
big screen.<lb/>
"I read the book four times<lb/>
while we were getting started,<lb/>
before we started filming. You<lb/>
know, there were 18 different ver-<lb/>
sions of the script. It started out<lb/>
being 210 pages long and worked<lb/>
its way down to about 120 or 130.<lb/>
We shot a hell of a lot more of<lb/>
the script - of the movie - than<lb/>
is actually on the screen because<lb/>
the book is so complex; the story<lb/>
is so complex. But what came out<lb/>
at the end, I think, is a nice distil-<lb/>
lation of it all<lb/>
Audiences everywhere can now<lb/>
see Hartnett burn up the big screen<lb/>
in The Black Dahlia, which opened<lb/>
in theaters last Friday. It would<lb/>
appear Hartnett is an unstoppable<lb/>
force in Hollywood. With such<lb/>
unique good looks and undeniable<lb/>
talent, it's no wonder he continues<lb/>
to make a name for himself.<lb/>
Be sure to look for Hartnett in<lb/>
several upcoming films including:<lb/>
Tales from Earthiea, Resurrecting<lb/>
the Champ, SO Days of Night and<lb/>
The Prince of Cool.<lb/>

DAHLIA<lb/>
continued from A6<lb/>
need of a dialect coach because<lb/>
throughout the film she switches<lb/>
from a Scottish to a British to an<lb/>
American to, sometimes, even a<lb/>
German accent despite the fact<lb/>
that it is clearly stated in the<lb/>
beginning that she is Scottish.<lb/>
The other major players,<lb/>
Hartnett and Kckhart, come off'as<lb/>
average and deliver performances<lb/>
you would expect from actors of<lb/>
their talent.<lb/>
For months, the entertain-<lb/>
ment world has been buzzing<lb/>
about the release of The Black<lb/>
Dahlia. Hollywood is no doubt<lb/>
hoping the buzz will end a hor-<lb/>
rendous box-office slump, the<lb/>
likes of which hasn't been seen<lb/>
in SO years. The Black Dahlia<lb/>
shouldn't have much trouble<lb/>
when it comes to making sure<lb/>
its opening weekend fares better<lb/>
then the weekend before, when<lb/>
moviegoers saw a putrid movie<lb/>
Josh Hartnett, as Dwight Bleichert and Hillary Swank as Madeleine Linscott.<lb/>
about teen vampires (or some<lb/>
other dim-witted idea along those<lb/>
lines) with bad acting and greasy<lb/>
hair to take the top spot with just<lb/>
$9 million. My prediction is that<lb/>
The Black Dahlia will take home<lb/>
$20 million opening weekend<lb/>
with an overall gross of $80 to<lb/>
$100 million.<lb/>

WEST VIRGINIA<lb/>
1. Get sacks:<lb/>
West Virginia has yet to record a sack on the season.<lb/>
ECU'S offensive strength is at the wideout position<lb/>
so preventing James Pinkney from distributing the<lb/>
ball to Aundrae Allison, Phillip Henry, Davon Drew<lb/>
and company will make it very difficult for the Pirates<lb/>
to score.<lb/>
2. Set up play-action:<lb/>
If Navy exposed anything about the ECU defense, it was<lb/>
that the defensive backs wilt get sucked in with the run.<lb/>
Navy had its shots downfield. Patrick White is a much more<lb/>
experienced passer than Brian Hampton and will not miss<lb/>
on his deep shots.<lb/>
3. Cut down on penalties:<lb/>
The Mountaineers were flagged 10 times a week ago<lb/>
against Maryland and lead the Big East in penalties<lb/>
through three games with 25. It West Virginia gives<lb/>
ECU free yardage, it could give the Pirates enough<lb/>
to pull off the upset.<lb/>

Rodriquez took over a West<lb/>

that was down and brought it back,<lb/>
turning a S-win team into a 9-win<lb/>
team in just one season.<lb/>
"I have an awful lot of respect for<lb/>
what they are doing right now and<lb/>
the steps that they have been taking<lb/>
to go from a middle of the pack top-20<lb/>
team, to really becoming one of the<lb/>
elite teams in the country said Holtz.<lb/>
The Mountaineers, ranked<lb/>
fourth in the country, will travel to<lb/>
Greenville Saturday to take on ECU<lb/>
in their first game away from Milan<lb/>
Puskar Stadium.<lb/>
"They gave us a lot of problems last<lb/>

road test and we're going to be in a tough<lb/>
environment Their crowd gets into it.<lb/>
This is going to be their big-<lb/>
gest game and we've got<lb/>
to be prepared for that<lb/>
The Mountain-<lb/>
eers defeated the<lb/>
Pirates, 20-15,<lb/>
last September<lb/>
in Morgan town,<lb/>
but Holtz said<lb/>
his team cannot<lb/>
rest following<lb/>
their come from<lb/>
behind win over Memphis last week<lb/>
because West Virginia is not going<lb/>
to look past the Pirates.<lb/>
"They have a very focused football<lb/>
team Holtz said. "They know where<lb/>
they are and they know where they<lb/>
want to go and they are really close<lb/>
to getting there. I think Coach Rodri-<lb/>
guez will have them ready to play<lb/>
"I am sure they are going to<lb/>
watch our game from last year and he<lb/>
will pick out all the clips of positive<lb/>
things that East Carolina did against<lb/>
them. I don't think they will come<lb/>
in here flat and I don't think they<lb/>
will come in here and over look us<lb/>
Many preseason prognostica-<lb/>
tions had the Mountaineers play-<lb/>
ing for, or winning, the national<lb/>
championship. That kind of talk is<lb/>
not intimidating the Pirates, but<lb/>
does have them excited about the<lb/>
opportunity to play spoiler.<lb/>
"We're excited said sopho-<lb/>

who injured his ankle in Tuesday's<lb/>
practice but is still expected to start<lb/>
Saturday. "We're here for one goal,<lb/>
and that one goal is to come out, play<lb/>
our hardest against West Virginia<lb/>
and try to come out on top<lb/>
Holtz said his biggest<lb/>
challenge is keeping the<lb/>
Pirates focused on foot-<lb/>
ball and not to be dis-<lb/>
tracted by the hype<lb/>

1. Contain Steve Slatoit:<lb/>
Like the saying, "You can't stop him, you can only hope<lb/>
to contain him Holtz said that West Virginia will get<lb/>
some big plays. The Pirates just need to limit them and<lb/>
keep Slaton from running free.<lb/>
2. Score first:<lb/>
West Virginia has yet to trail in a game this season, so forcing<lb/>
the Mountaineers to play from behind early in their first road<lb/>
game could get them out of their game plan.<lb/>
3. Protect the ball:<lb/>
The Pirates cannot afford to give West Virginia an extra<lb/>
possession. The West Virginia offense is a scoring<lb/>

CHALLENGE continued from A8<lb/>
the game until Saturday Holtz<lb/>
said. "Sometimes people come<lb/>
out and they get all juiced up<lb/>
on Tuesday and Wednesday and<lb/>
Thursday and they're ready to go.<lb/>
Then Saturday, the game's at 4:30<lb/>
and at noon, they're bouncing<lb/>
around and you're like, 'Whoa.<lb/>
Calm down Then they get to<lb/>
game time and they're dry<lb/>
Cotton, who leads the Pirates in<lb/>
tackles and forced turnovers, said<lb/>
maintaining focus isn't an issue.<lb/>
"We're not worried about<lb/>
the fans, we're not worried about<lb/>
they're number four, we're not<lb/>
worried about the critics or the<lb/>
BCS Cotton said. "We're coming<lb/>
out ready for West Virginia<lb/>
Cotton added that the Moun-<lb/>
taineers do not impress him.<lb/>
"There is nothing spectacular<lb/>
about West Virginia Cotton<lb/>
said. "They put their clothes on<lb/>
and line up just like we do<lb/>
With Cotton's recent ankle<lb/>
sprain, the injuries are piling up<lb/>
for the Pirates. Running back<lb/>
Chris Johnson, who tallied 106<lb/>
yards and a pair of touchdowns<lb/>
against Memphis, is aggravated<lb/>
by a "mild case" of turf toe. Domi-<lb/>
nique Lindsay is on the shelf with<lb/>
a torn MCL.<lb/>
Defensive end and team cap-<lb/>
tain Shauntae Hunt re-injured<lb/>
his knee versus the Tigers while<lb/>
Wendell Chavia is questionable<lb/>
for West Virginia and Brandon<lb/>
Setzer is still out with his bad<lb/>
knee. Following the West Vir-<lb/>
ginia game, the Pirates have their<lb/>
bye week and Holtz said it comes<lb/>
at a needed time of the season.<lb/>
"If we can get those guys<lb/>
some good work during the open<lb/>
date to where we can get a little<lb/>
more comfortable to be able to<lb/>
put them in there and play them,<lb/>
that'll be huge for us Holtz said.<lb/>
"We need the open date right now.<lb/>
We just need to get everybody<lb/>
healthy<lb/>
That does not mean the<lb/>
Pirates want the game to come<lb/>
and go. They are looking for-<lb/>
ward to the test of hosting the<lb/>
fourth-ranked team in the nation,<lb/>
and are not playing for a "moral<lb/>
victory<lb/>
"Winning is winning Cotton<lb/>
said. "That's how I see it. Win-<lb/>
ning is winning. That's all I<lb/>
got to say about that. No moral<lb/>
victories<lb/>
Holtz said he feels similarly.<lb/>
"I think any game you line up<lb/>
to play, you line up to win Holtz<lb/>
said. "Obviously they present a<lb/>
lot more challenges than a lot of<lb/>
other people you play. There's a<lb/>
difference between a top '20 and a<lb/>
top 5 team. Top 20 teams can do<lb/>
some things well. The top 5 teams<lb/>
don't have a weakness<lb/>
Holtz said Monday at his<lb/>
weekly press conference that it<lb/>
was tough to find a weakness on<lb/>
this year's West Virginia team.<lb/>
West Virginia's strength is<lb/>
easy to see with sophomore run-<lb/>
ning back Steve Slaton leading a<lb/>

THE EAST CAROLINIAN SPORTS<lb/>
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 2006<lb/>
CHALLENGE<lb/>
continued from A9<lb/>
ground attack that leads the<lb/>
nation, racking up 348.7 yards<lb/>
per game. Slaton, who is averag-<lb/>
ing eight yards a carry, leads the<lb/>
Mountaineers with 503 rushing<lb/>
yards. Quarterback Patrick White<lb/>
is second on the team with 155<lb/>
yards and is running the ball at a<lb/>
7.4 yards-per-carry clip.<lb/>
"When you look at them sta-<lb/>
tistically, they're scary Holtz<lb/>
said. "They are only averaging<lb/>
137 yards passing but when you<lb/>
are rushing for 350 I don't know<lb/>
that you need to throw the ball.<lb/>
You can see why they are one of<lb/>
the top-five teams in the country.<lb/>
They have a great football team.<lb/>
They are built an offense around<lb/>
an awful lot of speed. They have<lb/>
a very athletic offensive line.<lb/>
They're quick and they're a zone<lb/>
tram. They have great speed in<lb/>
their bark field. Their quarterback<lb/>
and tailback will be two of the<lb/>
fastest players anybody in the<lb/>
country "ill play all year<lb/>
While the Mountaineers have<lb/>
been dominant on offense, out-<lb/>
scoring their opponents, 46-12,<lb/>
they have been inconsistent on<lb/>
defense and have yet to record a<lb/>
sack. Rodriguez said he plans on<lb/>
rotating fresh players in to get a<lb/>
pass rush, especially from emerg-<lb/>
ing star, (-fbot-5-inch, 285-pound<lb/>
freshman James Ingram, who<lb/>
provided consistent pressure on<lb/>
Maryland's signal caller last week.<lb/>
"I was so close. They keep<lb/>
drilling us and telling us we need<lb/>
more sacks and I'm right there<lb/>
when he throws the ball but I<lb/>
just couldn't get it Ingram told<lb/>
Christopher Marshall of msns-<lb/>
portsnet.com. "I was definitely<lb/>
trying my hardest. 1 think overall<lb/>
our pass rush is developing<lb/>
ECU guard Matt Butler said<lb/>
he doesn't plan on letting the<lb/>
Mountaineer defense get near<lb/>
James Hinkney.<lb/>
"We don't want to be the first<lb/>
ones to let them get that sack<lb/>
Butler said. "We pride ourselves<lb/>
on protecting JP. We think of<lb/>
him as our momma. We don't<lb/>
want our momma to get hit, or<lb/>
our brother or sister, so we take<lb/>
offense to somebody touching JP.<lb/>
But we especially don't want West<lb/>
Virginia to come into our house<lb/>
and hurt our quarterback "<lb/>
Pinkney has been sacked three<lb/>
times this season as the young<lb/>
offensive line continues to improve.<lb/>
The senior quarterback's ability to<lb/>
make plays out of the pocket has<lb/>
Rodriguez concerned, as does<lb/>
F.CU's other skill position players.<lb/>
"Their quarterback reminds<lb/>
me of our guy, he can run and<lb/>
throw Rodriguez said. "Their<lb/>
tailback is a very fast guy, he's<lb/>
outstanding. They've got one of<lb/>
the best wideouts we'll play all<lb/>
year in Aundrae Allison. He could<lb/>
play for anybody<lb/>
Allison bounced back against<lb/>
Memphis with nine catches for<lb/>
124 yards and a touchdown a<lb/>
week after getting shut out at<lb/>
UAB while Johnson recorded his<lb/>
first 100-yard game of the season<lb/>
against the Tigers with 106 yards<lb/>
and two scores.<lb/>
Rodriguez knows of his team's<lb/>
troubles on the defensive line<lb/>
and is aware of ECU's improving<lb/>
offensive line.<lb/>
"They've got big guys up<lb/>
front said Rodriguez, who owns<lb/>
a 42-22 record at WVU. "We've<lb/>
had problems with big guys and us<lb/>
getting off blocks, so we've got a<lb/>
lot of concerns. That and the fact<lb/>
thai it's on the road, we're going<lb/>
to take everybody's best shot on<lb/>
the road, I'm sure<lb/>
Rodriguez sees similarities in<lb/>
the offenses of ECU and WVU with<lb/>
an athletic quarterback and spread-<lb/>
ing the field, except that WVU<lb/>
has been "more run-oriented<lb/>
White has just 27 pass attempts<lb/>
this season, completing 20 of them<lb/>
for 259 yards and three touch-<lb/>
downs without an interception.<lb/>
The Mountaineers have turned the<lb/>
ball over just once in three games<lb/>
and Holtz knows his team cannot<lb/>
afford any more costly turnovers<lb/>
despite the fact that the Pirates lead<lb/>
the nation in takeaways with 11.<lb/>
"There is no doubt that we<lb/>
will have to play a perfect game<lb/>
Holtz said. "We can't turn the ball<lb/>
over they way that we have been.<lb/>
They're not going to give us a<lb/>
bunch of turnovers. White has<lb/>
not thrown an interception. He is<lb/>
not going to throw it to us. We are<lb/>
going to have to go get it if we are<lb/>
going to make an interception. We<lb/>
are going to have to play a flaw-<lb/>
less game from an offensive and<lb/>
defensive standpoint<lb/>
One thing that may be in ECU's<lb/>
favor is the weather. The tempera-<lb/>
ture for the 4:30 p.m. kickoff is<lb/>
forecasted to be in the mid-80s<lb/>
and while the Pirates are adapted<lb/>
to the heat, the Mountaineers are<lb/>
not. Rodriguez conceded that the<lb/>
heat "might be an issue" because<lb/>
his players are not used to it.<lb/>
Forcing West Virginia to play<lb/>
from behind would be new to the<lb/>
Mountaineers and Holtz said the<lb/>
Pirates need to get off to a fast<lb/>
start, and keep that pace.<lb/>
"I think we better start fast,<lb/>
maintain it and finish fast if we<lb/>
want any shot in this one Holtz<lb/>
said. "This isn't a team that you<lb/>
can come from behind on. It is<lb/>
going to be important for our<lb/>
players and our mindset to get<lb/>
everybody up and get the crowd<lb/>
into the game<lb/>
