Potential stalkers are<lb />
using these sites<lb />
KIMBERLY BELLAMY<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Stalking is an issue that may<lb />
become a big problem with the<lb />
increase of students registering for<lb />
Web sites, such as MySpace and<lb />
Facebook, everyday.<lb />
According to Peter Romary,<lb />
director of student legal services,<lb />
North Carolina law defines stalk-<lb />
ing by three main factors.<lb />
The first factor is intentionally<lb />
following, being in the presence of<lb />
or harassing another individual by<lb />
phone calls, fax, e-mail or gifts on<lb />
more than one occasion.<lb />
The second important factor<lb />
is making that person fear for<lb />
their life or for a family member's<lb />
or close associate's life by making<lb />
them fear death, bodily injury or<lb />
more harassment.<lb />
Causing another individual<lb />
severe emotional distress is the<lb />
third factor that defines stalking<lb />
by N.C law.<lb />
About 13 percent of female col-<lb />
lege students have been victims of<lb />
stalking and about 42.5 percent of<lb />
the reported cases were committed<lb />
by boyfriends or ,eJ$-boyfriends,<lb />
according to Romary.<lb />

Classmates attempt about<lb />
SJ4.5 percent of stalking instances<lb />
and 10.3 percent are by acquain-<lb />
tances.<lb />
The relationships formed on<lb />
these types of Web sites could<lb />
end up deadly if you don't limit<lb />
the amount of information you<lb />
give others.<lb />
According to Romary, Taylor<lb />
Belli, a student at Virginia Com-<lb />
monwealth University, was mur-<lb />
dered her freshman year by some-<lb />
one she met on MySpace.<lb />
When Robbie Johnson, ECU<lb />
elementary education major, was<lb />
asked whether or not he felt stalk-<lb />
ing was a big problem at ECU, he<lb />
responded yes.<lb />
Johnson said that his reason<lb />
for saying yes was because of the<lb />
use of Web sites like Facebook and<lb />
MySpace.<lb />
Johnson also said that he feels<lb />
that the risk of stalking is greater<lb />
for females than males, and that<lb />
one of his female friends was<lb />
stalked by someone that she met<lb />
on MySpace.<lb />
Even after admitting that he<lb />
knew someone wljo was stalked<lb />
by the information that was listed<lb />
on one of these Web sites, Johnson<lb />
said that he has a user account for<lb />
both sites.<lb />

ECU professor<lb />
reaches out to high<lb />
school students<lb />
Stiller gives a tour to D.H. Conley students and parents recently at ECU.<lb />
John Stiller works with<lb />
high school students in<lb />
Greenville<lb />
ADELINE TRENTO<lb />
STAFF WRITKR<lb />
After meeting while walking<lb />
their dogs, John Stiller, a biology<lb />
professor at ECU, and Kathy Powell, a<lb />
high school science teacher, decided to<lb />
work togetl ler to bring college biology<lb />
to high school students in Greenville.<lb />
The program, which began<lb />
in 2004, came out of a grant<lb />
that Stiller received from the<lb />
National Science Foundation.<lb />
Stiller received a career investiga-<lb />
tor award, from which he was given<lb />
live years of support to develop an<lb />
integrated teaching and research pro-<lb />
gram. From this grant, Stiller devel-<lb />
oped an undergraduate course that<lb />
allowed his students to have a more<lb />
hands on, research based approach to<lb />
learning molecular biology.<lb />
Unlike most college science classes,<lb />
this course did not just teach students<lb />
how to use techniques and tools.<lb />
Instead it taught them to plan a proj-<lb />
ect, develop a real research question<lb />
and come up with an answer at the end.<lb />
"The biggest problem biology is<lb />
facing today is that techniques are<lb />
getting to be so driven by technology"<lb />
said Stiller. "So many people come<lb />
into class really excited about the<lb />
technology, but not thinking alxjut<lb />
how to apply it to the world around<lb />
them. We tend to reinforce that in our<lb />
teaching with canned labs and work-<lb />
books that produce predetermined<lb />
results. What is not lieing conveyed is<lb />
that science is a process of discovery<lb />
After seeing how successful the<lb />
hands on approach was with under-<lb />
graduates, Stiller decided to use this<lb />
technique at the high school level.<lb />
He teamed up with Karen Powell<lb />
to use this method on her advanced<lb />
placement students at D.H. oConley<lb />
High School in Greenville.<lb />
The program begun during the<lb />
spring semester, after the students<lb />
had been introduced to DNA and<lb />
molecular biology. This way they<lb />
had a basic understanding of the way<lb />
molecular biology works, the key<lb />
terms and the structure of DNA.<lb />
Using equipment brought in from<lb />
die labs at ECU, diestudentsdid genetic<lb />
typing on bacteria growing in their<lb />
every day environment 'Hie students<lb />
grew bacteria, determined die DNA of<lb />
die bacteria ami then entered the DNA<lb />
of their bacteria into die computer to be<lb />
compared with die national database.<lb />
"Basically the students went from<lb />
square one of isolating an organism,<lb />
to the method of getting a gene, ana-<lb />
lyzing the gene, getting a sequence,<lb />
analyzing the sequence and deter-<lb />
mining what they could infer from<lb />
their findings Stiller said.<lb />
By starting at square one, the<lb />
students are involved in all areas<lb />
of the experiment and are therefore<lb />
The iPod is now a mainstay on almost every college campus due to the ease with which information is transferred.<lb />
Podcasts integrate into college<lb />
life and blogs in a major way<lb />
see TEACHING page A2<lb />
V<lb />
(MCT) Since their introduc-<lb />
tion in '2001, iPods have become so<lb />
ubiquitous that it's rare to go a day<lb />
without spotting someone sport-<lb />
ing the trademark white earphones<lb />
in the gym, on a city bus or walk-<lb />
ing down the sidewalk.<lb />
Podcasts made for the digi-<lb />
tal media players have become<lb />
increasingly popular and diverse<lb />
also, even becoming commonplace<lb />
on college campuses across the<lb />
country as a way for professors<lb />
to broadcast lessons outside of a<lb />
classroom. But now students, who<lb />
are usually on the audience end of<lb />
a podcast, are turning the tables<lb />
and using the medium as a way to<lb />
have their voices heard.<lb />
Dennis R. Miller, director of<lb />
public relations at Pennsylvania's<lb />
Mansfield University, decided<lb />
last year that the best way to give<lb />
prospective students and incoming<lb />
freshmen an uncensored look at<lb />
college life was to create a pod-<lb />
cast for them using the voices of<lb />
real students in a show he called<lb />
"Freshmen Secrets Revealed"<lb />
(http:podcast.mansfield.edu).<lb />
"I just got the sense that this<lb />
i 1<lb />
new medium was just taking off<lb />
like crazy after the iPod was the<lb />
number one Christmas gift last<lb />
year Miller said. "The beauty of it<lb />
is that it captures students in their<lb />
own words, and you can listen to<lb />
it without being limited by time or<lb />
any other type of constraint<lb />
Eden Hartwell, a sophomore at<lb />
Mansfield, was one of the students<lb />
who spoke about her early college<lb />
experiences on Miller's podcast. She<lb />
grew to enjoy the production aspects<lb />
of creating the show and moved on<lb />
to helping edit and mix the podcast.<lb />
"The production became sort<lb />
of a hobby, and I've gotten good<lb />
feedback about the project Hart-<lb />
well said. "I think it's a success and<lb />
a good way to be heard. I'd like to<lb />
continue doing it<lb />
"A lot of existing studio applica-<lb />
tions were modeled after programs<lb />
made for professional musicians<lb />
said Michael Levy, co-founder of<lb />
Equicast Media, the company that<lb />
developed WildVoice. "This is<lb />
designed to be easier to use than<lb />
those, for a more casual user who<lb />
wants to have some fun<lb />
Many amateur podcasts take<lb />
the form of audio blogs, where<lb />
students can air their thoughts on<lb />
current events, art, culture or per-<lb />
sonal experiences. WildVoice also<lb />
allows students to use podcasting<lb />
as a form of social networking,<lb />
where users can choose to make<lb />
their podcasts available to the<lb />
general public, or to a specified<lb />
group of friends and "fans They<lb />
can also create their own profiles<lb />
and organize favorite podcasters<lb />
and types of content into personal-<lb />
ized "channels<lb />
Pluggd (pluggd.com) is<lb />
another recently launched site<lb />
that allows users to browse pod-<lb />
casts, share opinions and create<lb />
Web sites around their favorites,<lb />
although it does not allow mem-<lb />
bers to post their own podcasts.<lb />
Community sites that combine<lb />
social networking and blogs with<lb />
the new technology of podcast-<lb />
ing provide amateur podcasters<lb />
with a new type of hybrid hosting<lb />
site, according to WildVoice user<lb />
Jimmy Daulton, a sophomore at<lb />
the State University of New York<lb />
Stony Brook who goes by the<lb />
handle "Jinibolito<lb /><pb facs="00059440_tn_0003" /><lb />

GOP House candidates to end long<lb />
primary with special election<lb />
(AP) While most General<lb />
Assembly candidates are starting<lb />
to look toward the November elec-<lb />
tions, Stephen LaRoque and Willie<lb />
Ray Starling are still wrapped up<lb />
in a seven month primary battle<lb />
that should end with a special elec-<lb />
tion Tuesday.<lb />
The State Board of Elections<lb />
last month ordered a new elec-<lb />
tion in their 10th House District<lb />
after some voting irregularities<lb />
and some possible problems with<lb />
at least one new voting machine<lb />
during the May 2 primary election.<lb />
Starling, a retired federal<lb />
government worker from Wayne<lb />
County who lost to LaRoque<lb />
in 2004, was also campaigning<lb />
Monday, knocking on doors, even<lb />
at homes where LaRoque signs<lb />
are erected.<lb />
"I'm an eternal optimist Star-<lb />
ling said. "My message is getting<lb />
across to people<lb />
The winner won't have much<lb />
time to rest. Democrat Van Brax-<lb />
ton, a Kinston city councilman, is<lb />
TEACHING<lb />
continued from Al<lb />
more interested in the results and the<lb />
reasons why they got those results.<lb />
Stiller believes that with this learn-<lb />
ing styie the students will realize<lb />
that science is not just about learning<lb />
techniques. Instead, they will see it<lb />
is about learning how to apply these<lb />
methods to their everyday life. "As the<lb />
students get to see more results, they<lb />
get to see the practical output of what<lb />
they have been doing in the lab and<lb />
the more excited they get Stiller said.<lb />
"When they find something<lb />
they didn't expect they start to ask<lb />
questions. They ask, well why is this<lb />
organism in my school? Where did it<lb />
come from? How did it get here?' That<lb />
is when the real learning and the real<lb />
understanding of biology happens<lb />
Stiller believes it is beneficial for<lb />
the students to learn these things<lb />
at the high school level. In order for<lb />
students to want to study biology in<lb />
college, they have to be stimulated<lb />
and interested in high school.<lb />
"Krom these experiments students<lb />
are left puzzling, thinking and research-<lb />
ing questions that they had never<lb />
tlKxight to ask in the first place, and that<lb />
is what makes good science. That is what<lb />
excites people into becoming research-<lb />
ers and scientists Stiller said.<lb />
This program has had a great<lb />
response from the students who have<lb />
been involved in it. According to<lb />
e-mails that Stiller and Powell have<lb />
received, past students have said that<lb />
this high school class helped them<lb />
immensely in college Most students<lb />
from the 2004 class didrrtrealize how<lb />
much they had actually learned from<lb />
the hands-on experience until they<lb />
got to college. These students found<lb />
they were more knowledgeable and<lb />
more able to understand their science<lb />
classes than their classmates.<lb />
"Some of my students have gone<lb />
on to college and majored in bio-<lb />
logical science, one in biotechnol-<lb />
ogy Powell said. "I have another<lb />
student, now a senior, that is enrolled<lb />
in our honors medical program.<lb />
She will be conducting research at<lb />
the hospital that requires her to do<lb />
the techniques that she has already<lb />
learned through this partnership<lb />
Stiller plans to continue this<lb />
program in the future. He hopes<lb />
to expand this program to all high<lb />
schools in Pitt County and eventually<lb />
to all high schools in North Carolina.<lb />

STALKING<lb />
continued from Al<lb />

ECU is implementing meth-<lb />

The first step you should<lb />
take if you fear that you're being<lb />

A warrant should he issued<lb />

is stalking you, which will give<lb />

it's their first offense, according<lb />
to Romary.<lb />
Subsequent offenses will lead<lb />
to a Class F felony and a Class H<lb />

The administration at ECU is<lb />

Cheating: It's in the numbers<lb />
These days, there is no limit to the number of ways one is able to cheat.<lb />
(MCT) It's the sort of case<lb />
you might expect Encyclopedia<lb />
Brown to tackle.<lb />
Two kids seem to have cheated<lb />
on Professor Harpp's final exam.<lb />
Can he prove the culprits did it<lb />
before it's too late?<lb />
But when McGill Univer-<lb />
sity professor David Harpp sus-<lb />
pected some of his students were<lb />
up to no good, he didn't hire a<lb />
boy detective for a shiny new<lb />
quarter. He did the job himself.<lb />
He devised a statistical<lb />
method to determine whether<lb />
two students were copying test<lb />
answers from each other. He found<lb />
that, on a 98 question multiple<lb />
choice test, the pair of students<lb />
had 97 answers exactly the same,<lb />
including '23 wrong answers.<lb />
Confronted with the evidence,<lb />
the students confessed.<lb />
"We had always worried that<lb />
cheating was happening, but we<lb />
had to find a way to figure out<lb />
who was doing it said Chris<lb />
McManus, a professor of psychol-<lb />
ogy and medical education at<lb />
University College London who<lb />
hunts cheaters<lb />
Caveon used several methods<lb />
to look for bad behavior. But the<lb />
most common problem it found<lb />
was classrooms or schools where<lb />
a group of students had identical<lb />
or nearly identical answer sheets,<lb />
suggesting they may have copied<lb />
from one another.<lb />
That method of detecting<lb />
cheating has a long history and,<lb />
according to researchers in the<lb />
field, does a good job of identify-<lb />
ing the right suspects. And those<lb />
researchers say Texas could do a<lb />
better job of preventing students<lb />
from cheating in the first place.<lb />
Having lots of identical correct<lb />
answers, of course, doesn't raise<lb />
red flags. If the correct answer to<lb />
Question 21 is "B you'd expect<lb />
many students to choose it. But<lb />
students who get many questions<lb />
wrong in exactly the same way,<lb />
particularly if few other class-<lb />
mates made the same mistakes,<lb />
can be a sign something is up.<lb />
The suspects had 31, 28, 25<lb />
and 17 wrong answers, respec-<lb />
tively, in common. The average<lb />
for the rest of the class: only four.<lb />
The students denied cheat-<lb />
ing at first, but three "quickly<lb />
confessed guilt when confronted<lb />
with the evidence the paper's<lb />
author wrote.<lb />
Dr. Harpp is a chemistry<lb />
professor at McGill, one of the<lb />
most prestigious universities in<lb />
Canada. He didn't know much<lb />
about cheating research in 1989,<lb />
when one of his students told<lb />
him that two peers had shared<lb />
answers on a final exam.<lb />
"I felt I was being ripped off,<lb />
which I was Dr. Harpp said.<lb />
The student worried about<lb />
being a rat. But he agreed to tell<lb />
Dr. Harpp the suspects' names<lb />
on the condition that no disci-<lb />
plinary action would be taken<lb />
based solely on his accusation.<lb />
Dr. Harpp had to find a statistical<lb />
way to detect copycats.<lb />

Not just for Pirate Rants <lb />
A brief history<lb />
of ECU student<lb />
privacy<lb />
BENJAMIN CORMACK<lb />
OPINION WRITER<lb />
There has been a big uproar as of late<lb />
about privacy issues with Web sites like<lb />
Facebook and MySpace in regards to how<lb />
easily people can learn information about a<lb />
person, including information that may not<lb />
wish to be known. My only response to this<lb />
issue is a heavily emphasized and drawn<lb />
out, "DUH<lb />
I've always been hesitant to use sites like<lb />
MySpace and especially Facebook because<lb />
of how open they are to public view. Call<lb />
me crazy, but I don't want my life to be on <lb />
display for the campus and especially the 3<lb />
whole world to view. I think people fail to<lb />
understand that with the Internet the more<lb />
you wish to express yourself, the less privacy<lb />
you have.<lb />
Of course Facebook is not the first thing<lb />
ECU students have had issues with regard-<lb />
ing privacy and information.<lb />
About four years ago, OneCards had stu-<lb />
dent ID numbers on them. The problem was<lb />
that the student ID numbers are usually the<lb />
same as a student's social security number.<lb />
If you lost your OneCard back then, you had<lb />
a lot more to worry about than losing all<lb />
your Piratebucks. Thankfully though, ECU<lb />
changed this and even offered free replace-<lb />
ments for cards with numbers on them.<lb />
Most of you probably remember the fiasco<lb />
over the Higher One program when it was<lb />
first started. People were in an uproar when<lb />
they heard about all the personal infor-<lb />
mation that was given to the Higher One<lb />
financial services company by the school. It<lb />
should be known though that most of this<lb />
anger was due in part to a feeling of lack of<lb />
consent from the students.<lb />
However, I still think there are problems<lb />
with how ECU utilizes personal information.<lb />
A few weeks ago I found a fellow student's<lb />
schedule and receipt for payment just lying<lb />
on the ground. Their name, ID number and<lb />
home address were clearly on it, and a birth-<lb />
day, minus the exact year, is easily found<lb />
with a search on Piratemail. In the end, I<lb />
had more information on this individual<lb />
than I probably should have. I've even tried<lb />
to return the schedule I found to the owner,<lb />
but I have not heard back from them.<lb />
That's why 1 always blackout every sig-<lb />
nificant piece of personal information that<lb />
shows up, and can usually be found, on every<lb />
piece of mail that I get from ECU.<lb />
Of course, you can't blame ECU for how<lb />
they utilize students' personal information.<lb />
Several colleges around the country utilize<lb />
systems similar to those like Piratemail and<lb />
even use the same Higher One program to<lb />
organize the sheer number of students that<lb />
attend college. I just would like to see the<lb />
use of personal information toned down a<lb />
bit.<lb />
Instead of birthdays being used as part of<lb />
student e-mail addresses, I think just using<lb />
names and some form of specific school iden-<lb />
tification would be better. Even people with<lb />
the same name can be further identified and<lb />
specified with numbers at the end.<lb />
Also, I think student ID numbers should<lb />
be different from social security numbers. It<lb />
is true that students would have to memorize<lb />
a completely new number, but I think that is<lb />
a small price to pay for identity security.<lb />
Just remember that ultimately you have<lb />
final say in how your information is used.<lb />
PIRATE RANTS<lb />
When preachers cross the line<lb />
They have a right to freedom of<lb />
speech, but are they effective?<lb />
RYAN COBEY<lb />
OPINION WRITER<lb />
What do you get when you cross three<lb />
fire and brimstone preaching ministers with<lb />
a Muslim and '20 college students? Contro-<lb />
versy at its finest.<lb />
The sounds of attempted salvation and<lb />
retribution rang across campus last Wednes-<lb />
day, grabbing the attention of passerby and<lb />
herding them in a half-circle around a group<lb />
of preachers outside of Joyner Library. How-<lb />
ever, it seemed that these men were doing a<lb />
bit more than just reciting the "word of God<lb />
I was pondering not even attending one<lb />
class just so I could observe how we as stu-<lb />
dents interpret this, but thankfully the same<lb />
guy was preaching on the exact same topic<lb />
when I got out of my class an hour later. And<lb />
it wasn't only students; I saw a few of my<lb />
teachers listening in as well.<lb />
Not being a huge reader of the Bible, I per-<lb />
sonally didn't have much to contribute. How-<lb />
ever, when one preacher in particular began<lb />
to judge a Muslim student simply based on his<lb />
belief, I began to consider the completely igno-<lb />
rant one-sided views some of these men have.<lb />
I heard this one specific preacher tell<lb />
a Muslim student that his belief "is false<lb />
The man did not even stop for one second to<lb />
consider the diverse group of people stand-<lb />
ing around him. He had his belief, he had<lb />
his "faith" as he liked to call it, and because<lb />
of this so-called faith, he judged people as<lb />
being completely wrong simply because they<lb />
did not believe the exact same thing he did.<lb />
To top it all off, he called one particular<lb />
student an "animal This student had to<lb />
be taken away by authorities for physically<lb />
pushing the preacher. And despite it being<lb />
a completely idiotic idea to attempt a fight<lb />
with a preacher, I don't know if I blame him<lb />
very much for doing it.<lb />
After sitting through an hour and a half<lb />
of this, I had to talk to someone about it. I<lb />
immediately rushed home to discuss it with<lb />
one of my roommates, who is very devout in<lb />
his Christian faith, just to see what he would<lb />
say. His response was a short, simple and<lb />
pleasantly surprising "those people are what<lb />
give Christians a bad name<lb />
From what you've already read, I'm sure<lb />
you'd find it surprising that I am a Christian<lb />
myself, who regularly attends church on Sun-<lb />
days. However, that is the truth, at least that's<lb />
how I see myself. I believe in god, I believe in<lb />
the messiah, but just because I don't believe<lb />
every single piece of information in the Holy<lb />
Bible, I am on a one-way trip to Hell accord-<lb />
ing to the preachers who judged me last week.<lb />
So where is the fine line that divides<lb />
obsession and belief? Where is the cutoff<lb />
point where faith begins to make you disre-<lb />
gard every single other option or belief in<lb />
the world? How are there even people left<lb />
in this diverse world of ours that still have<lb />
such a one-track mind? And more impor-<lb />
tantly, what do they think they're going to<lb />
possibly accomplish by preaching to college<lb />
students? We are people who are here for<lb />
the sole purpose of learning more about the<lb />
world around us, and becoming more open<lb />
to new ideas and concepts.<lb />
If anything, these preachers at least give<lb />
us a topic to argue on. But if I learned any-<lb />
thing from an hour and a half of pointless<lb />
sermons, it was that there is absolutely no<lb />
possible way to argue with a person who is<lb />
too closed-minded to see any other side but<lb />
his own.<lb />
Can someone tell me a good<lb />
time to go to the gym? I mean,<lb />
without having to fight the<lb />
anorexics for the ellipticals.<lb />
Why does every 1-A college in<lb />
North Carolina pretend to be a<lb />
football school?<lb />
Why does everyone make smooch<lb />
faces in pictures its weird.<lb />
You have no idea how annoying<lb />
it is to be sitting somewhere<lb />
quietly and all of a sudden, you<lb />
hear scuffling noises because<lb />
someone's too lazy to pick up<lb />
their feet. God gave you feet so<lb />
use them instead of dragging<lb />
them across the campus or<lb />
in the basement. And if you<lb />
simply can't do that, then<lb />
perhaps you weren't meant to<lb />
wear sandals, slippers or any<lb />
type of shoe that's heavier.<lb />
Stop unscrewing the lights in<lb />
the Jones elevator! Three need<lb />
to be on at all times.<lb />
All I know is if you don't have<lb />
a ticket for the WVU game,<lb />
you better get it quick 'cuz this<lb />
game will sell out. Nice work<lb />
Pirates. Five interceptions<lb />
deserve congratulations.<lb />
I heard that when you come<lb />
to class and the teacher is not<lb />
there a professor is allowed up<lb />
to 15 minutes to be late before<lb />
you leave and a doctor gets 30<lb />
minutes. So what do we give<lb />
graduate students?<lb />
I want those nifty e-mails<lb />
from the university saying<lb />
what is going on on-<lb />
campus that week back!<lb />
All I want<lb />
obvious?<lb />
is you. Isn't it<lb />
JUST ASK JANE<lb />
Need advice? Want answers? Just ask Jane.<lb />
Why do professors insist on<lb />
using all this new technology,<lb />
like Eduspace and the response<lb />
pads in the classroom when<lb />
they don't even know how to<lb />
use it themselves?<lb />
Hey thanks, thanks for that<lb />
summer.<lb />
I think 90 percent of the<lb />
student body here wears<lb />
rainbows andor smokes.<lb />
Where are all the computer<lb />
nerds and such on<lb />
campus? Geeks are hot.<lb />
Tip your servers well!<lb />
To the girl on the bus yesterday<lb />
that said my boyfriend is too<lb />
cute for me, you must be<lb />
jealous because you will never<lb />
get a guy like him. Remember,<lb />
he is with me and not with<lb />
you!<lb />
The stupid frats on campus<lb />
made it so Cars did not show<lb />
on Sunday. They always ruin<lb />
everything. They all look like<lb />
clones anyways. I still have fun<lb />
laughing at them and the game<lb />
my friends and me play!<lb />
Pirate Rants are allowing me to<lb />
not study. I love them so much!<lb />
Why does Victoria Secret have<lb />
a line named Pink when half<lb />
the stuff isn't pink in color?<lb />
To the person bashing the<lb />
PIRATEARRGGGGG cheer,<lb />
why? It is FIRST DOWN -<lb />
PIRATESARRRRRGGG! It<lb />
keeps the team excited and<lb />
also involves everyone. If you<lb />
don't like it, then don't come<lb />
to the game because you are<lb />
just bringing negative feelings<lb />
and that is not helping.<lb />
ARRRRGGGG!<lb />
Whose smart idea was it to<lb />
change the Gold bus route?<lb />
Now there is no way for us poor<lb />
souls who live on the Hill to<lb />
get there from central campus<lb />
when it's raining outside. Nice<lb />
of you to think of everyone in<lb />
your decision. Thanks a lot!<lb />
OK, so the new LAHN building<lb />
is great with the Laupus Library<lb />
and the high tech equipment.<lb />
But, you know what? It's just<lb />
too far from east campus. I<lb />
miss that sense of community!<lb />
Why aren't the Pirate Rants<lb />
online? They used to be! Bring<lb />
them back, please. I can't<lb />
always get my hands on a<lb />
paper copy of the TEC.<lb />
No, I did not like the PIRATE<lb />
ARRGGGGG one bit. Please<lb />
bring back PURPLEGOLD.<lb />
And folks, please wear purple<lb />
or gold to the games. It's a<lb />
college football game, not a<lb />
fashion show.<lb />
Stop eating so much and<lb />
complaining your pills made<lb />
you gain weight it's your<lb />
eating habits. Stop eating<lb />
everything fried six times a day<lb />
and complaining to me about<lb />
it. I'd feel sick too.<lb />
I hate what you're doing to me<lb />
too, and even though you hate<lb />
that you're doing it you're<lb />
not doing anything about it,<lb />
and I don't hate you for it<lb />
but I do realize you're not who I<lb />
thought you were. I don't even<lb />
know that person any more.<lb />
What's wrong with blackboard?<lb />
Why are ECU football fans so<lb />
stupid? I bleed purple & gold<lb />
so it's hard for me to criticize<lb />
but, you have to know when to<lb />
make noise! Here's a hint, If<lb />
our QB is under-center shut<lb />
up, when their QB is under-<lb />
center get loud. There's a<lb />
reason the offense asked us<lb />
to shut the hell up during a<lb />
couple possessions (by waiving<lb />
their arms).<lb />
The people working in the<lb />
Mendenhall computer lab need<lb />
to do their job. I was in there<lb />
trying to work on something<lb />
for school and all I could hear<lb />
was them babbling about what<lb />
color they should set for their<lb />
background on MySpace and<lb />
how they didn't like the mini<lb />
feed on Facebook. The girl<lb />
also told me not to answer<lb />
any phone calls in the lab, yet<lb />
she continued to watch video<lb />
clippings, with the sound on,<lb />
on the internet.<lb />
Wake me up when September<lb />
ends.<lb />
Going in doors and out, going<lb />
up stairs and down, use the<lb />
right side please! I am sick of<lb />
people being so lazy that they<lb />
go in the left door because it<lb />
is open, and going up the left<lb />
side of stairs because they<lb />
are idiots.<lb />
Bison are not endangered.<lb />
They are delicious. Get it right.<lb />
If a woman holds a door open<lb />
for you, or even just keeps it<lb />
open behind her instead of<lb />
slamming it in your face, maybe<lb />
you should be appreciative and<lb />
not chauvinistically refuse<lb />
to go through said door. You<lb />
don't see me scowling at all<lb />
the ladies and gentlemen on<lb />
campus who are kind enough<lb />
to open doors for me.<lb />
I love teachers who lecture for<lb />
an hour and run out of material<lb />
and yet still keep you there<lb />
for another 25 minutes just<lb />
wasting time because they can.<lb />
Dear Jane,<lb />
You know how most students can't get<lb />
jobs at ECU? Well, I just got one, but I'm<lb />
embarrassed to tell ail of my friends about<lb />
it. I'm a new employee of McDonalds, a<lb />
job I never wanted, but I have to pay my<lb />
oills somehow. I'm in a sorority here and<lb />
I'm afraid of what my sisters will think of<lb />
my low-class, unglamorous job. Should I<lb />
tell them or just try to keep it hidden?<lb />
Signed,<lb />
Newly employed and newly embarrassed<lb />
Dear newly employed,<lb />
While I'm not sure how the people<lb />
around you will react, I do know one thing,<lb />
people always have been and always will<lb />
be judgmental. However, your real friends<lb />
won't care where you work. They'll realize<lb />
that you have responsibilities and that you're<lb />
going to take care of them in any way that<lb />
you can. You shouldn't feel the need to hide<lb />
where you are working either. When you<lb />
start trying to lie to the people that you care<lb />
about, things get tricky and it always ends<lb />
up coming back and haunting you in the end.<lb />
So while you don't have to stand on a chair<lb />
and announce your new job, be honest with<lb />
your friends and enjoy the new cash flow.<lb />

Tailgating like a true Pirate<lb />
Pirate Fans getting into the spirit before Saturday's victory over Memphis.<lb />
The perfect way to get<lb />
your "game face on"<lb />
LIZ FULTON<lb />
SENIOR WRITER<lb />
Cheers to the pirates and<lb />
their victory over Memphis. It<lb />
looked bleak at the end of the<lb />
first half, but the boys regrouped<lb />
and sent the Tigers home with<lb />
their tail between their legs.<lb />
With all of the excitement<lb />
and joy of the Pirates' victory,<lb />
does your home game experi-<lb />
ence feel a little empty? It could<lb />
be that a crucial part of the day<lb />
scored only sub par on the fun<lb />
scale causing the rest of the day<lb />
to plateau.<lb />
I am, of course, talking<lb />
about tailgating, something<lb />
that should be revered as an<lb />
institution here at ECU. Tail-<lb />
gating brings together stu-<lb />
dents, alumni and fans that<lb />
normally would not congregate<lb />
together except for their great<lb />
love of their team.<lb />
The art to tailgating<lb />
involves more than just a lounge<lb />
chair and a beer. There are<lb />
several dynamics needed to<lb />
assemble a tailgate that you<lb />
and your friends will be talking<lb />
about well into your nursing<lb />
home years.<lb />
As a 14 year veteran to<lb />
attending and tailgating at KCU<lb />
home games, I have learned that<lb />
there are three core elements to<lb />
a top-notch tailgate. The first<lb />
is location, location, location.<lb />
Depending on your rowdiness<lb />
level, different areas around<lb />
Dowdy-Ficklen attract different<lb />
kinds of people. The Krisbee<lb />
golf field next to the baseball<lb />
stadium and the field at Eppes<lb />
Middle School are by far the<lb />
places where the most action is.<lb />
These are the places where most<lb />
students stake their claim and<lb />
come bearing beer pong tables,<lb />
huge cookers for pigs and all the<lb />
classic rock you can stomach.<lb />
Now many of you might skip<lb />
the second ingredient of tailgat-<lb />
ing to make room for the third.<lb />
No judgment here, but believe<lb />
me when I tell you that there is<lb />
nothing like a full belly before<lb />
a football game.<lb />
The best vittles to tailgate<lb />
with vary from tailgater to<lb />
tailgater, but you can never go<lb />
wrong with Bojangles, Park-<lb />
ers or KFC. Some of the more<lb />
established tailgaters will bring<lb />
their grill, and it is always pos-<lb />
sible to challenge them to a beer<lb />
pong game thus defeating them<lb />
for their hamburgers.<lb />
Food and a good spot are<lb />
important, but nothing beats<lb />
drinking during the day with-<lb />
out judgment. Beer is always<lb />
in fashion but it's necessary to<lb />
gauge the game time with the<lb />
proper alcoholic beverage. If the<lb />
game is at noon, then mimosas<lb />
and Bloody Marys should be<lb />
on the menu. For a later game.<lb />
Maker's Mark and ginger ale<lb />
tastes delicious with the biting<lb />
air of an October afternoon.<lb />
As for the classic tailgater,<lb />
there are several types. There<lb />
is the guy (or girl) that gets to<lb />
the field four hours before the<lb />
game and never leaves his truck<lb />
bed. They listen to the game on<lb />
the ladio never making it into<lb />
the stadium. Another breed is<lb />
the tailgate floater who hits as<lb />
many different spots as they<lb />
can, stealing respectable tail-<lb />
gaters' beer and chicken legs.<lb />
There is also the family<lb />
who has had the same tailgate<lb />
spot for 15 years and will prob-<lb />
ably have it for 20 more. They<lb />
tailgate with the finest food<lb />
and beverages and stay for the<lb />
entire game. They also enjoy<lb />
post tailgating while waiting<lb />
for the traffic to clear.<lb />
With the upcoming months<lb />
bringing Saturdays full of<lb />
football, make sure to enjoy the<lb />
sacred art of tailgating.<lb />

Couples go crazy<lb />
about comments<lb />
MEREDITH STEWART<lb />
SENIOR WRITER<lb />
Facebook.com and Myspace.<lb />
com are two Web sites that most<lb />
college students recognize and use<lb />
on a daily basis. You are able to<lb />
post comments and leave messages<lb />
on other profiles and learn a great<lb />
deal about someone else based on<lb />
their interests, favorites, photos,<lb />
clubs and other personal informa-<lb />
tion. You are also able to display<lb />
your "status which lets people see<lb />
if you are in a relationship or not,<lb />
and this is where things go from<lb />
fun and entertaining to crazy and<lb />
dramatic.<lb />
I have actually heard couples<lb />
fight over the fact that the other<lb />
person displayed an incorrect<lb />
status or did not display one at<lb />
all If you have found yourself in<lb />
this situation you .should really ask<lb />
yourself, "Is this argument even<lb />
worth my time?" That has got to<lb />
be absolutely ridiculous.<lb />
Another big issue that couples<lb />
find themselves dealing with is<lb />
the photos posted on these Web<lb />
sites. If they are "tagged others<lb />
can click and see who is in the<lb />

"I saw a girl who I thought I<lb />

Can we please agree to disagree and<lb />

Downtown is calling and there<lb />
is a place for enjoyment every<lb />
night of the week. For returning<lb />
students, you may notice a few<lb />
changes. Over the summer Cafe<lb />
Caribe shut its doors and Sunday<lb />
night salsa lessons were lost for-<lb />
ever. Fear not, because surely a new<lb />
hotspot will arrive soon.<lb />
Also occurring over the<lb />
summer was the transformation<lb />
of The Cavern into The Phoenix.<lb />
It is still the place to catch The<lb />
Chairmen of the Board (actually<lb />
Friday, Sept. 82) anil to gyrate to<lb />
rap and hip-hop.<lb />
Happening less recently, but<lb />
still unbeknownst to some, is the re-<lb />
opening ofScores under new own-<lb />

bands and cater to an older crowd.<lb />
For anyone that has been living<lb />
under a rock (or a mountain of<lb />
textbooks), the beloved Cabanas<lb />
has become Rumors. This too is<lb />
Under new ownership and they<lb />
oiler a wide array of drink specials<lb />

Keep your eyes peeled for the<lb />

Even if you aren't familiar with<lb />
their sound, go anyway and sup-<lb />

For techno music and beyond.<lb />
Still Lite and occasionally Aqua<lb />

The Other Place should also be<lb />
a spot on your travels if for no other<lb />
reason but the incomparable DJ<lb />
Charlie Mac. Not only can he sing<lb />
a mean beach music tune, but he'll<lb />
normally play anything you want.<lb />
For the financially challenged,<lb />
the best night to go out is Tuesday.<lb />
Start your night at Boli's with their<lb />
famous mug night. For either $1 or<lb />
$2, your mug will be tilled with the<lb />
finest ales. There is also always<lb />
live music to sing along with<lb />
Pantana Bob's has $5 all you<lb />
can drink of their draft beer,<lb />
also on Tuesdays. This normally<lb />
attracts a large crowd so make sure<lb />
to get their early for a bar stool<lb />
Hidden in in alley across from<lb />
Buffalo Wild Wings is Levels.<lb />
They oiler $8 vodka drinks and<lb />
$8 pitchers of Bud Light. This bar<lb />
is sometimes quieter than Boli's or<lb />
P.Bs and is a great place to begin<lb />
the night.<lb />
Each night in downtown<lb />
Greenville is a different opportu-<lb />

it is up to you to find the treasure.<lb />
Also guys, remember that most<lb />

Wilmington, which happens to<lb />
be a convenient two hours from<lb />
ECU, thus making for an easy<lb />
weekend escape.<lb />
As it is cooling down and tall<lb />
is fast approaching. Wilmingto-<lb />
nians must find other things to<lb />
fill their days with, other than<lb />
lounging on the beach. My per-<lb />
sonal favorite pastime is shop-<lb />
ping, and in Wilmington, there<lb />
is lots of it to be done. There's<lb />
the Westfield Mall, which is sig-<lb />
nificantly bigger than our own<lb />
Colonial. Wilmington's mall is<lb />
home to more than 150 stores<lb />
including Forever 81, Charlotte<lb />
Kusse, Journeys and Abercrom-<lb />
bie & Fitch, just to name a few.<lb />
If the mall is not your thing<lb />
and you're more into boutiques<lb />
and bargain hunting, then head<lb />
to dow mow n Wilmington where<lb />
the streets are lined with many<lb />
stores that have something for<lb />
everyone. There's the Old City<lb />
Market with several artisan<lb />
shops where you can find hand-<lb />
crafted treasures for your room<lb />
or, if you're like me, you can at<lb />
least stock up on unusual can-<lb />
dies such as chocolate covered<lb />
sunflower seeds and whistle lol-<lb />
lipops (everybody needs to expe-<lb />
rience the whistle lollipop).<lb />
There are also several bou-<lb />
tiques along the river. Island<lb />
Passage and Blackbeard's Bryde<lb />
are my favorites and they have<lb />
a great selection of clothing for<lb />
girls and guys alike 1 recom-<lb />
mend scoping out the sale racks<lb />
at these stores as they do carry<lb />
designer labels.<lb />
There's also Return Passage<lb />
located just down the street<lb />
where you can find marked-<lb />
down designer clothes Think<lb />
Bugged Wearhouse, but for<lb />
designer goods.<lb />
There are. of course, other<lb />
things to do around the city<lb />
apart from shopping. During<lb />
the day you can take a variety of<lb />
tours, walking downtown tours,<lb />
dining and sightseeing water<lb />
tours and murder mystery boat<lb />
tours. We took a walking ghost<lb />
tour and saw the city from an<lb />
entirely different perspective. A<lb />
guide takes you from location to<lb />
spooky location telling you the<lb />
historical tales of battles and<lb />
brawls that went on there.<lb />
After all that shopping<lb />
and sightseeing, you will have<lb />
worked up an appetite and, luck-<lb />
ily for you, Wilmington has an<lb />
abundance of great restaurants.<lb />
Flaming Amy's Burrito Barn<lb />
is located on Oleander Drive<lb />

atmosphere, but they make one<lb />

SENIOR WRITER<lb />
Billy Godwin said he's better<lb />
prepared and has his plan in<lb />
place as the ECU baseball coach<lb />
prepares for his second season as<lb />
skipper of the Diamond Bucs.<lb />
"The offseason has given<lb />
me a chance to reflect said<lb />
Godwin, who was named head<lb />
coach following the resignation<lb />
of former coach Randy Mazey.<lb />
"I was kind of thrust into<lb />
the situation in October. I've<lb />
had a chance to reflect and get<lb />
my thoughts together about<lb />
how I want to approach things<lb />
and how I want to do things<lb />
in a first full season, so that's<lb />
certainly exciting for me to have<lb />
the opportunity to plan. There's<lb />
been more planning on my part<lb />
about how I want things done in<lb />
our program<lb />
Godwin's second season as<lb />
the head coach got under way last<lb />
week with the commencement of<lb />
fall practice. Godwin said he was<lb />
impressed with what he saw from<lb />
his returning players. "I think<lb />
we've got a lot accomplished in<lb />
a short period of time Godwin<lb />
said of the first week of the 13-<lb />
day fall practice schedule. "I've<lb />
been really encouraged. We've<lb />
seen some good things. The<lb />
purpose of the fall is to evaluate<lb />
so that we can take the individual<lb />
time to work on some things that<lb />
we see guys gotta work at<lb />
Many Pirates used the<lb />
summer to hone their skills play-<lb />
ing in various wood-bat summer<lb />
leagues throughout the country.<lb />
A few achieved all-star success in<lb />
their respective leagues.<lb />
Mike Flye and Jamie Ray<lb />
each were selected to play in the<lb />
Coastal Plain League All-Star<lb />
game. Flye posted an ERA under<lb />
1.00 as the closer for the Wilson<lb />
Tobs while Ray's .350 batting<lb />
average earned him a spot on<lb />
2006 SEBaseball.com summer<lb />
all-star team. Godwin said he<lb />
sees an improvement from all 12<lb />
returning Pirates who played in<lb />
the amateur leagues.<lb />
"We had some guys go<lb />
out and have great summers<lb />
Godwin said. "Jamie Ray was<lb />
one of the top U players in the<lb />
country. Dale Mollenhauer had a<lb />
great summer (in Canada). Shane<lb />
Matthews threw well in the Cape<lb />
Cod League.<lb />
"The summer is a great<lb />

identified things and what we<lb />
asked them to do, 'These are<lb />
some of the things we'd like to<lb />
see you do to come back and be a<lb />

Godwin said the summer<lb />
leagues have kept his players,<lb />
includingjunior college transfers<lb />
Trent Ashcraft, Cory Kemp and<lb />
Mark Letchworth, in shape.<lb />
"I've been really impressed<lb />
in the conditioning that our<lb />
returners have come back in<lb />
Godwin said.<lb />
The Rocky Mount native<lb />
and former head coach at<lb />
Louisburg College said he was<lb />
equally impressed with the Dia-<lb />
mond Buc hopefuls.<lb />
"There are some guys who<lb />
certainly can play college base-<lb />
ball Godwin said. "The key for a<lb />
walk-on is are they good enough<lb />
to come in right now and contrib-<lb />
ute. I was real impressed overall<lb />
with our walk-on tryouts<lb />
Aside from the JuCo transfers<lb />
and possible walk-ons, Godwin<lb />
said he has been impressed with<lb />
his first recruiting class. First<lb />
baseman Kyle Roller from Rich-<lb />

The baseball team hopes to return to the NCAA Tournament.<lb />

contribute Godwin said.<lb />
Godwin and his staff, which<lb />

Tara Shaw determined<lb />

Senior midfielder Tara Shaw is a big reason why the women's soccer team has jumped out to a strong start.<lb />
Shaw has scored three goals, including two against Georgia State. She has started all eight games.<lb />
Senior matures as<lb />
career winds down<lb />
TOMMY GRAHAM<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
When coaches recruit, they<lb />
look for size, athleticism and the<lb />
determination to never quit. As far<lb />
as size goes, on the ECU women's<lb />
soccer team they do not get much<lb />
bigger than Tara Shaw.<lb />
At 5-10, Shaw presents an<lb />
intimidating presence in the mid-<lb />
field for Rob Donnenwirth'i team.<lb />
As a senior she provides a strong<lb />
defensive presence, as well as a<lb />
scoring threat that gives oppo-<lb />
nents more than one thing to worry<lb />
about when she's around the ball.<lb />
Only one other player on the<lb />
team does she truly have to look up<lb />
to, that being Mary Puckett (5-11),<lb />
but yet in her four years at ECU,<lb />
Shaw has not only stood tall in<lb />
literal terms for this team, she has<lb />
set an example off the field as well.<lb />
Shaw came to ECU by way<lb />
of Great Valley H.S. in Malvern,<lb />
Pa. Located in eastern Pennsyl-<lb />
vania, this town of 3,200 located<lb />
in Chester County is close to the<lb />
Paoli Battlefield site. On her high<lb />
school team, Shaw was a leader.<lb />
She notched top 10 all time scor-<lb />
ing honors in her school's history<lb />
as well as being a four year letter<lb />
winner and four time first team<lb />
all-league selection. In her senior<lb />
season, Shaw helped lead her team<lb />
9 to the semi-finals of the state high<lb />
01 school soccer tournament.<lb />
After graduation, Shaw came<lb />
to ECU where the student body is<lb />
larger than the population of her<lb />
hometown. She began her colle-<lb />
giate play in the 2003-2004 year,<lb />
seeing action in eight games for<lb />
the Lady Pirates that year. Shaw<lb />
did not get long to adjust to the<lb />
college game. After sitting out<lb />
the first lew contests, she got her<lb />
first game action against ECU's<lb />
chief regional rival, the UNCW<lb />
Seahawks.<lb />
As a sophomore, Shaw played in<lb />
16 games lor the Lady Pirates with<lb />
her first start being in the home<lb />
opener against Georgia southern.<lb />
She also recorded her first goal<lb />
that season against Memphis and<lb />
finished the year ranked third on<lb />
the team in shot percentage at .286.<lb />
Of the most memorable things<lb />
that happened that year, Shaw<lb />
said one of the best was "beating<lb />
Cincinnati in their own house<lb />
Going into her Junior cam-<lb />
paign Shaw was ready to make a<lb />
name for herself. She was one of<lb />
only eight Pirates to have played in<lb />
all 21 games, starting 12 of them<lb />
at the mid-field position. She tied<lb />
for fourth on the team with two<lb />
goals, but her shot percentage<lb />
dropped to .167. However, she<lb />
was one of the Lady Pirates on<lb />
the field during their conference<lb />
tournament victory over a ranked<lb />
SMU team. She said this victory<lb />
"was really special" in the fact that<lb />
earlier in the year, ECU had lost<lb />
to them on Bunting Field.<lb />
Now in her senior year, Shaw<lb />
so far this season is already tied<lb />
for second in points (nine) with<lb />
three goals and a shooting per-<lb />
centage of .333. She recorded two<lb />

STAFF WRITER<lb />
Sloppy is not a term usually<lb />
used to describe a three-games-<lb />
to-none win, but it is exactly the<lb />
way Lady Pirates Head Coach<lb />
Chris Rushing described his<lb />
team's latest victory.<lb />
The Lady Pirates were able to<lb />
overcome lowly North Carolina<lb />
A&T in three games Tuesday<lb />
night 30-19, 30-24, 30-26.<lb />
Leading the Lady Pirates<lb />
was Mignon Dubenion with 15<lb />
kills. Dubenion also contributed<lb />
two digs on the night. Senior co-<lb />
captain setter Heidi Krug had 38<lb />
assists and 10 digs on the night,<lb />
giving her a double-double.<lb />
The Lady Pirates started slow<lb />
out of the gate before getting<lb />
things together to win the game.<lb />
Early in the game the appearance<lb />
of defensive difficulties were evi-<lb />
dent, allowing the Aggies to hang<lb />
around for the first 20 minutes.<lb />
During a timeout, Krug could be<lb />
heard shouting the same term her<lb />
coach would use at the end of the<lb />
night. Sloppy.<lb />
Game two went much the same<lb />
way with the Aggies refusing to<lb />
go down, playing the Lady Pirates<lb />
almost point-for-point until the<lb />
score was 21-20, at which point<lb />
Bushing's team was able to put<lb />
away the Aggies, winning the<lb />
game 30-24.<lb />
The final game was the clos-<lb />
est of the night with the Lady<lb />
Pirates coming out on top 30-26<lb />
to complete the sweep. Of the<lb />
Lady Pirates 35 digs, 18 came in<lb />
game three.<lb />
While happy to get the win,<lb />
Rushing and his players expressed<lb />
disappointment in their effort<lb />
after the game, clearly expect-<lb />
ing to handle A&T easier than<lb />
they did.<lb />
"We did not do basic funda-<lb />
mentals very well tonight said<lb />
Rushing. "Defensively, we weren't<lb />
getting to the right spots to dig<lb />
balls. We were dropping to our<lb />
knees when we should have been<lb />
staying on our feet, and we did not<lb />
get the ball to our setter so that we<lb />
could run a good offense<lb />
Following the game Rushing<lb />
took his team behind closed-doors<lb />
for nearly 20 minutes.<lb />
Upon exiting the locker room<lb />
Krug echoed much of what Rush-<lb />
ing had said. c<lb />
"We were all frustrated Krug <lb />
sighed. "In the first two games we -g<lb />
had 17 digs. We weren't doing the $<lb />
things that we normally do <lb />

"The NCAA tournament is a<lb />
process Godwin said, "and the<lb />
process is that we have to go out<lb />
and recruit the kind of players<lb />
that can put us in that position.<lb />
Our coaching staff is responsible<lb />
for getting those guys to play at<lb />
the level to be able to get into the<lb />
NCAA tournament. These guys<lb />
are focused right now on playing<lb />
at the level we believe they have<lb />
to play at.<lb />
"The NCAAs, that's more<lb />
of turn-the-page January-type<lb />
goal. The fall right now is letting<lb />
guys know what our expectations<lb />
are, meeting those expectations,<lb />
exceeding them and just trying<lb />
to be a better baseball player<lb />
to help us win games in the<lb />
spring<lb />
Godwin added that there<lb />
is "no question" that getting<lb />
back to the NCAA tourna-<lb />
ment and ultimately to Omaha<lb />
for the College World Series<lb />
is one of those expectations.<lb />
"We don't want a player to<lb />
come in here and that not be his<lb />
ultimate goal as a member of<lb />
our baseball program Godwin<lb />
said. "We talk about Omaha a lot<lb />
within our team<lb />
Starting another streak of<lb />
NCAA appearances will not be<lb />
easy as the Pirates will welcome<lb />
three teams who played in the<lb />
2006 College World Series to<lb />
Clark-LeClair Stadium. Rice,<lb />
UNC and Cal State Fullerton<lb />
will come to Greenville, among<lb />
other "heavy hitters" from the<lb />

"We've got some teams<lb />
like Michigan, Pepperdine and<lb />
North Carolina State coming<lb />
in Godwin said. "I think when<lb />
our schedule is released; it's<lb />
probably going to be one of<lb />
the most challenging schedules<lb />
that East Carolina's played. Our<lb />
philosophy on that is, if we want<lb />

SHAW<lb />

continued from A7<lb />
of those goals in the game against<lb />
Georgia State earlier this month.<lb />
With only one more goal, Shaw<lb />
will have tied her career mark of<lb />
four goals and could very easily<lb />
surpass that mark with 11 games<lb />
left in the season.<lb />
However, she is not just all<lb />
about height and leg power. Shaw<lb />
is studying criminal justice here<lb />
at ECU and has made the Athletic<lb />
Dean's list multiple times, most<lb />
recently in the spring of 2006. In<lb />
addition, she was named to the<lb />
honor roll on multiple occasions as<lb />
well as being named to the C-USA<lb />

Roll the past two years. Looking<lb />
ahead Shaw would like to be able<lb />

"I just want to be able to help<lb />
people she said when asked why she<lb />
chose criminal justice as her major.<lb />
"It gives us a chance just to<lb />

remarked that this will be one of<lb />
the things she misses the most<lb />
after she leaves the program this<lb />
year. Outside of the field is where<lb />
the team "really gets to know each<lb />

Over the course of the past<lb />

being a "small town girl to the<lb />

not want to see. With 11 games<lb />
left this season, her favorite niece<lb />
and nephew cheering her on and<lb />
the Conference tournament to<lb />
