ECU graduates attempt to 'be a<lb />
voice of reason, a voice of peace'<lb />
Students organize a<lb />
fundraising walk to<lb />
help children in Africa<lb />
KIMBERLY BELLAMY<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Ttoo recent graduates of ECU,<lb />
Neil Klinedinst and Kenneth<lb />
Taylor, are organizing a 4.5 mile<lb />
walk called the Gulu Walk to help<lb />
raise money for children in north-<lb />
ern Uganda.<lb />
At night, children in northern<lb />
Uganda walk for miles from their<lb />
towns to Gulu and other cities to<lb />
avoid being abducted by the Lord's<lb />
Resistance Army, or the LRA,<lb />
according to Klinedinst.<lb />
Being raped, abused, murdered<lb />
or forced to abduct and kill other<lb />
children are some of the other fac-<lb />
tors of abduction these children<lb />
try to avoid.<lb />
The 20 year old conflict in<lb />
Uganda exists because of the divi-<lb />
sion of governments that sparked<lb />
during British colonial rule, accord-<lb />
ing to ugandacan.org.<lb />
According to guluwalk.com,<lb />
about 30,000 children whose aver-<lb />
age age is 13 have been kidnapped.<lb />
Conditions are so terrible that<lb />
many of the children have been forced<lb />
to kill members of their own family.<lb />
The LRA was established in<lb />
1986 and is a driving force in the<lb />
competition between north and<lb />
south Uganda for power.<lb />
The original creators of the<lb />
GuluWalk are Adrian Bradbury<lb />
and Kieran Hayward, who began<lb />
this program in spring of 2005.<lb />
The Gulu Walk is partnered<lb />
with four children's programs in<lb />
northern Uganda to which they<lb />
will directly contribute 75 percent<lb />
of the donations.<lb />
The four programs are Health<lb />
for Night Commuters, Youth Com-<lb />
munity Peacebuilding Initiative,<lb />
Youth Advisory Board and Girls<lb />
Education Initiative.<lb />
The worldwide goal for the<lb />
organization is to get 10,000 people<lb />
to raise $100 each for a total of $1<lb />
million.<lb />
Celebrities, like Steve Nash and<lb />
Sarah McLachlan, are some of the<lb />
people who have supported this<lb />
effort thus far.<lb />
Klinedinst and Taylor set their<lb />
goal at $20,000 and have been<lb />
working on strategies to get their<lb />
goal accomplished since May<lb />
2006.<lb />
Their motto for the event,<lb />
which they hope will encourage<lb />
more people to get involved, is,<lb />
"Be a voice of reason, a voice of<lb />
peace The worldwide motto for<lb />
GuluWalk is, "Are you a reason<lb />
for hope?"<lb />
Preparation for the event that<lb />
they have gone through so far<lb />
includes contacting the local med ia,<lb />
creating information pages on<lb />
Facebook and MySpace, contact-<lb />
ing department heads on campus<lb />
and seeking support from various<lb />
student organizations.<lb />
They have also done an inter-<lb />
view with Channel 12 for the<lb />
community spotlight and will do<lb />
another interview with NBC for<lb />
Early Sunshine sometime in the<lb />
upcoming weeks.<lb />
A screening of Uganda Rising<lb />
was shown in Hendrix Theater<lb />
in Mendenhall Student Center on<lb />
Sept. 11 to increase awareness of the<lb />
situation in Uganda. An additional<lb />
screening is planned to occur closer<lb />
to the time of the event.<lb />
Only minor costs have<lb />
been required, including<lb />
money for paper to print out<lb />
flyers to publicize the event.<lb />
This is the first attempt by<lb />
Klinedinst and Taylor to plan a<lb />
major fundraising event without<lb />
the help of others.<lb />
The decision to plan the<lb />
walk was completely voluntary<lb />
for both students after research-<lb />
ing the conditions of resi-<lb />
dents in this region of Africa.<lb />
Klinedinst said he developed<lb />
interest in learning about the conflict<lb />
in Uganda his freshman year at ECU.<lb />

ECU's first World Community<lb />
Day celebration, an interactive<lb />
international fair for students,<lb />
takes place today in Mendenhall<lb />
Great Room number three from<lb />
2-5 p.m.<lb />
The fair was originally sched-<lb />
uled to take place outside on the<lb />
Mendenhall Brickyard, but has<lb />
been moved indoors because of the<lb />
possibility of inclement weather.<lb />
Students will be able to begin<lb />
their adventure by having their<lb />
picture taken for an event pass-<lb />
port at the registrationpassport<lb />
table, which they can use to collect<lb />
stamps at various booths repre-<lb />
senting different countries.<lb />
The "itinerary" includes pos-<lb />
sible visits to booths from China,<lb />
India, Sudan, Mexico, Morocco,<lb />
Peru and the United States, and<lb />
cultural activities like eating<lb />
sushi, writing Chinese calligraphy,<lb />
making beaded jewelry and talking<lb />
to students in Morocco or Peru via<lb />
a live global classroom video link.<lb />
Carol Woodruff, director of<lb />
co-curricular programming for<lb />
Student Development, said this<lb />
international fair is different from<lb />
multicultural events held in the<lb />
past because every major country<lb />
represented will have some sort of<lb />
activity relating to the country's<lb />
culture for students to engage in.<lb />
Students will also have the<lb />
opportunity to enjoy music and<lb />
dance performances from around<lb />
the world. A dance performance<lb />
from the Philippines will take<lb />
place at 2:20 p.m followed by<lb />
Taiko Drummers at 2:40 p.m<lb />
and an Indian dance performance<lb />
at 3:40 p.m.<lb />
The Gospel Choir will perform<lb />
at 4 p.m followed by a Salsa dance<lb />
performance at 4:40 p.m.<lb />
Representatives from the ECU<lb />
Asian Student Association, ECU<lb />

ECU Gospel Choir will be present<lb />
at the event.<lb />
Non-student groups such as<lb />
the World Affairs Council, Habitat<lb />
for Humanity and Heifer Interna-<lb />
tional will also be present.<lb />
After visiting and learning<lb />
about all the different countries<lb />
represented at the fair, students<lb />
can present their stamped pass-<lb />
ports at the U.S. Customs area to<lb />
qualify them for a free long-sleeved<lb />
World Community Day T-shirt<lb />
and other prizes.<lb />
The passport's final page also<lb />
includes a list of questions and reflec-<lb />

CLAYTON BAUMAN<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
The construction management<lb />
department of ECU has imple-<lb />
mented a new set of guidelines<lb />
for student absences this school<lb />
year.<lb />
The new policy will be<lb />
aimed at reducing student<lb />
absences in an attempt to boost<lb />
student performance and<lb />
grades.<lb />
Though seemingly strict and<lb />
heavy-handed to some, the pro-<lb />
fessors are envisioning the new<lb />
policy as beneficial to both them-<lb />
selves and the students who are<lb />
enrolled in the courses.<lb />
"There are a lot of group<lb />
projects in construction said<lb />
Dr. Doug Kruger, chair of the<lb />
Construction Management<lb />
department, "and, it's not fair<lb />
to other students who are in<lb />
groups, and individuals who<lb />
do not show up need to suffer<lb />
accordingly<lb />
"I believe what you will<lb />
eventually see is that the students<lb />
will perform better said Kruger.<lb />
The policy is targeted at those<lb />
students with the mentality that<lb />
they should be able to come to<lb />
class when they want to come and<lb />
expect to be taught what they<lb />
missed when they return to the<lb />
class.<lb />
Before implementation, the<lb />
construction management hoard<lb />
as a whole, including (acuity dis-<lb />
cussed the measure in its entirety<lb />
and agreed upon it.<lb />
According to the atten-<lb />
dance policy, "Active student<lb />
participation is sought in all<lb />
construction management<lb />
courses. In order to support this<lb />
objective, attendance is para-<lb />
mount for academic success and<lb />
reinforces the value of student<lb />
- faculty and student - student<lb />
interactions<lb />
Some students are indifferent<lb />
to the new policy and some actu-<lb />
ally see it as beneficial.<lb />
"Though a bit rough, I think<lb />
the new policy might actually help<lb />
grades quite a bit said Arniand<lb />
Vonsiatsky, a senior construction<lb />
management major.<lb />

E. coli outbreak traced to spinach sold<lb />

Health officials say raw, pack-<lb />

killed at least one person and made<lb />
dozens of other people sick.<lb />
Cases have been reported in 20<lb />

Fall TV Great<lb />
Escape from<lb />
Reality<lb />
CAROLYN SCANDURA<lb />
PULSE EDITOR<lb />
It seems like it is too early in the semester<lb />
to be spreading yourself too thin. You are<lb />
trying to figure out how to balance two jobs,<lb />
16 semester hours, a boyfriendgirlfriend, your<lb />
family, your friends and your health. There<lb />
never seems to be any time for yourself because<lb />
you are constantly doing things to make other<lb />
people happy.<lb />
Finally the TV is a reasonable solution to<lb />
your stress problem. What better stress relief<lb />
for the too busy college student than your<lb />
favorite TV shows? Have you ever planned<lb />
your Tuesday night around "NipTuck" at 10<lb />
p.m. because you had been looking forward to<lb />
it since 10:59 p.m. the previous Tuesday? What<lb />
about the "Grey's Anatomy" and "Desperate<lb />
Housewives" premieres? Don't lie to yourselves<lb />
guys, you know you watch them too.<lb />
What about NFL football on Sunday and<lb />
Monday? What better reward can there be<lb />
than working a 12-hour shift and going home<lb />
to see your favorite team slaughter their rival<lb />
team?<lb />
When we were younger, our parents used<lb />
TV as a reward for doing so many different<lb />
things. Finishing your homework, baby-sit-<lb />
ting a younger sibling, doing your chores<lb />
on time or getting a good grade In many<lb />
households these great acts were commended<lb />
by letting you watch just one more episode of<lb />
"The Simpson's "90210 "Dawson's Creek" or<lb />
"Salute Your Shorts in your younger years.<lb />
Why not use that same philosophy now?<lb />
We all have too much to do but it can all<lb />
be managed with the proper planning and a<lb />
great motivator. Try using TV as a goal. If you<lb />
study for that Biology test for two hours, you<lb />
can watch the new "Survivor" that is divided<lb />
by race before you finish cramming.<lb />
Next time you can sense a stressful week<lb />
coming, try planning it out day by day and<lb />
deciding what has to happen and what can wait.<lb />
If watching the first episode of "Desperate<lb />
Housewives" is a priority for you, plan around<lb />
it. Washing your car can probably wait a few<lb />
days, whereas studying for a test in a six hour<lb />
class cannot wait. Make time for what is impor-<lb />
tant: Your sanity. If it happens to be achieved<lb />
by sitting down with your drink of choice and<lb />
watching a baseball game, so be it.<lb />
Make some time for yourself, ECU. Col-<lb />
lege will be over before you know it and you<lb />
don't want to look back on your days here<lb />
thinking about how stressed you were all<lb />
the time. Get a group of friends together and<lb />
enjoy each other, not to mention this fall's<lb />
incredible TV line-up.<lb />

Entertaining fodder from the front<lb />

AARON BORREGO<lb />
OPINION WRITER<lb />
Yes ladies and gents it is time to point out which<lb />
people have been dropping steaming piles of intel-<lb />
ligence on the world recently. We are going to begin<lb />
with a venture into the vast puddle of critical think-<lb />
ing brought to us by entertainment personalities.<lb />
Paris Hilton got into some trouble for driving while<lb />
intoxicated recently. This doesn't really surprise me, as<lb />
I am still puzzled by the fact that this lady has enough<lb />
brain cells to walk upright. Listen guys, anyone can get<lb />
a DUI, but if you are a famous person the microscope<lb />
is always on you, I believe even she is aware of that.<lb />
She was pulled over for driving erratically to<lb />
In and Out Burger before being issued the fun field<lb />
sobriety test when pulled over. Well, I have seen this<lb />
young lady and maybe it was her funky eye that was<lb />
doing the driving that night while her "good" eye<lb />
was trying to sober up? Either way, I hardly recog-<lb />
nized her not being within four inches of a bed and<lb />
a green-lit aura emphasizing her acting.<lb />
I recently saw rapper Paul Wall in a new video<lb />
featuring Brooke Hogan. First off, I can't believe she<lb />
is related to the wrestler, she is so pretty. Anyway, I<lb />
noticed Wall's signature teeth shinning bright from<lb />
ear to ear. Does this man know he looks like the tin<lb />
man just crapped in his mouth? Can someone please<lb />
get this man a towel and maybe some turpentine and<lb />
the tin man some toilet paper and maybe a cork?<lb />
Although 1 think the song is terrible, I do actu-<lb />
ally like some of his music. I'm just saying, he has a<lb />
very comical look to him, but he does also seem to<lb />
have a good sense of humor about it all.<lb />
Now to some random questions I have been wonder-<lb />
ing about: Does anyone really care about seeing Tom<lb />
Cruise and Katie Holmes kid? It would seem to me the<lb />
authorities might need to eventually take this kid away.<lb />
Why are there always 4 million commercials for<lb />
tampons and old people pampers at dinner time?<lb />
What ever happened to the walking chemical lab,<lb />
Eminem? I liked watching him mess things up,<lb />
threaten people, upset conservatives and generally<lb />
just be crazy he made things funny and interest-<lb />
ing. Why do all medications have side effects worse<lb />
than the actual symptoms you are suffering from?<lb />
Why do people attack the writers' articles in this<lb />
paper from behind the safety of a computer screen<lb />
and then not offer up any of their own great ideas?<lb />
Since you are willing to bash I'm guessing you think<lb />
you could do it better, so leave some constructive<lb />
stuff and maybe someone will listen.<lb />
With that I conclude my observations for this<lb />
week. I have officially thrown my deuces upon<lb />
the table of commentary. Please feel free to post<lb />
some comments about things you would like to<lb />
hear about in the articles. If you can come up<lb />
with a great topic and make a good point, I will<lb />
speak about it even if I don't totally agree with it.<lb />
As always, be good and take care of yourselves.<lb />

Questioning the National Drinking Age<lb />
STACY DAIL<lb />
OPINIONS WRITER<lb />
Just like any normal college student with a little<lb />
bit of free time, I found my self sitting in my room<lb />
logged on to the oh-so addictive Facebook. Given<lb />
the new stalker features that dear Facebook has<lb />
recently installed, I get the privilege of knowing<lb />
each one of my friends every waking move.<lb />
Through the "cool" new "News Feed" feature, I<lb />
saw that Facebook now gives users the opportunity<lb />
to join groups based on campaign issues that they<lb />
are supporting in the 2006 election. I came across a<lb />
campaign that one of my friends was supporting that<lb />
dealt with lowering the drinking age from 21 to 18.<lb />
Before I start, I just want to say that the reason<lb />
I am writing about this is not because I am some<lb />
crazed college student who lives for getting drunk<lb />
four nights out of the week, and has, over the years,<lb />
become best friends with the bottle of vodka that<lb />
graces their room. I am interested because I was<lb />
shocked to find out why America is one of the few coun-<lb />
tries that has such a high drinking age, and because<lb />
I think there are valid reasons for lowering the age.<lb />
The Facebook group explains that the reason<lb />
the drinking age is 21 is because of the 1984 Federal<lb />
Highway Act, which basically threatened every state<lb />
by giving them the ultimatum of either agreeing to<lb />
make and enforce the law of not being able to buy<lb />
alcohol until the age of 21, or else their federal high-<lb />
way funding would be dramatically decreased.<lb />
First of all, I think that this is completely stupid<lb />
because states are allowed, at least somewhat, to<lb />
govern themselves. If the federal government is<lb />
going to blackmail states so that they get their way,<lb />
then why even have a state government system?<lb />
The reasoning behind changing the drinking age<lb />
to 21 was to decrease alcohol related accidents and<lb />
deaths. Unfortunately, the federal government's logic<lb />
was quite wrong, and instead of decreasing the death<lb />
rate, it just shifted from ages 18-20 to 21-23 years old.<lb />
In my experience, drinking becomes "cool" during<lb />
the latter part of high school, and especially the first<lb />
few years of college. One of the big reasons why it is<lb />
such a popular past time is because it's a new thing, and<lb />
the fact that it isn't allowed makes it more thrilling.<lb />
If the drinking age was lowered to 18, by the<lb />
time kids got into their senior year of high school<lb />
or first year of college, there wouldn't be that thrill,<lb />
and the excitement would be gone.<lb />
I know what you are thinking, and I know that<lb />
there are always going to be those kids that are happy<lb />
getting drunk every night, even if they are legally<lb />
allowed to do it. For the most part, if by the time<lb />
kids get to college, they are used to alcohol, I think<lb />
that it would be used more as a chill thing, and not<lb />
so much to get totally wasted, and be intoxicated<lb />
enough to think that driving is OK.<lb />
In the United States once a person turns<lb />
18 they are able to vote, and if necessary, can<lb />
get drafted or voluntarily serve in the mili-<lb />
tary. Most would agree that if an 18-year-old<lb />
kid is old and mature enough to serve, or even<lb />
die, for our country, then they are certainly old<lb />
enough to drink a beer if the mood strikes them.<lb />
I'm pretty sure that this is an old ever-lasting<lb />
argument and changes probably won't take place<lb />
anytime soon. Facebook recommends writing to our<lb />
State Senator about the issue, but call me pessimistic,<lb />
but nothing is going to change by a bunch of college<lb />
kids begging to get the drinking age lowered.<lb />
On a lighter note, lowering the drinking age could<lb />
in fact be very beneficial to police officers, especially<lb />
those in downtown Greenville, who are probably<lb />
really tired of giving out underage drinking tickets.<lb />
To point out a more serious issue, you have to be<lb />
18 to get into a club, so if the drinking age is 18, then<lb />
cops can stop being so petty about nailing students<lb />
with drinking tickets, and go catch the drunks who<lb />
are about to kill other people by driving.<lb />

I have been keeping up<lb />

OK, I admit it. I'm addicted<lb />

My roommate has recently<lb />
picked up a disease known<lb />

I never see him anymore.<lb />
Now he just hangs out<lb />
with his girlfriend every<lb />
day. I might even halfway<lb />
understand if she was a cool<lb />

dumpish tendencies. When<lb />
will he learn that dumpy<lb />

Most things, I can tolerate.<lb />
But the second you whip<lb />

for your route we were<lb />
all late because you didn't<lb />
show up at the library for<lb />
your route.<lb />
You're killing me with all<lb />
these phone calls. I want<lb />
nothing more than to answer<lb />
and hear your voice, but<lb />
your voice happens to be<lb />

How well do vou deal with stress?<lb />
A few tips everyone can<lb />
use to help cope<lb />
AARON BORREGO<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
The way you handle stress<lb />
can determine so much about<lb />
your life that it is scary. Hope-<lb />
fully you have had a stress-free<lb />
day. If not, read on, for you are<lb />
the typical college student.<lb />
Stress can manifest itself<lb />
in mental, social and physi-<lb />
cal ways. Headaches, crying,<lb />
lossgain of appetite, oversleep-<lb />
ing, sleeplessness and even<lb />
pure exhaustion are just some<lb />
of the symptoms associated<lb />
with the misman-<lb />
agement of stress.<lb />
Everyone knows what<lb />
stress is and what forms it can<lb />
take so no one needs a reminder.<lb />
I can, however, offer some sug-<lb />
gestions when it comes to stress<lb />
management. There are some<lb />
obvious answers such as<lb />
improving sleeping patterns,<lb />
eating healthier, meditation<lb />
and clearing of the mind;<lb />
but there are always more<lb />
than just a few options.<lb />
First off, think about the<lb />
situation enough to make<lb />
one valid observation: Can<lb />
I really control or change<lb />
anything in this ordeal?<lb />
Take the saying "don't<lb />
sweat the small stuff"<lb />
into account and don't<lb />
overwhelm yourself<lb />
initially. Break the<lb />
situation down into<lb />
easily manageable<lb />
parts. The "forest and<lb />
the trees" need to be kept in per-<lb />
spective.<lb />
There is also a way to deal with<lb />
stress that I personally find very<lb />
helpful; which is to try to monitor<lb />
and control the subsequent reac-<lb />
tions that you have to stress. Try<lb />
to see what your initial reaction is,<lb />
hopefully it isn't an overreaction,<lb />
and try to gauge your reaction<lb />
better the next time you are faced<lb />
with similar stress.<lb />
Another management skill is<lb />
the concept of mind over matter.<lb />
This is a pretty simple tactic<lb />
of stress management I like to<lb />
employ in order to have some<lb />
control over my life and stressful<lb />
decisions. There is no situation<lb />
you cannot overcome if you look at<lb />
it logically and take it step by step.<lb />
What is stress? Ifyou think about<lb />
it as a challenge and something<lb />
you can conquer, you may have<lb />
better luck.<lb />
Try getting away from the<lb />
stressful thoughts and feelings<lb />
that might accompany you for at<lb />
least just a few minutes a day. You<lb />
would be surprised how much this<lb />
truly helps in the long run. Try<lb />
making a goal for yourself or set<lb />
aside at least SO minutes to do<lb />
something just for you.<lb />
Too often it is human nature to<lb />
not let anything go that bothered<lb />
you a great deal. When you have<lb />
accomplished, what you need to,<lb />
don't dwell on it, just let it go.<lb />
Here are a few things not to<lb />
do in extreme cases of dealing<lb />
with stress. Don't use drugs or<lb />
alcohol, and don't lie to yourself<lb />
or completely avoid the issues to<lb />
mask your true feelings about your<lb />
displeasure with the way things<lb />
are going currently. Confront<lb />
them in any positive way you can<lb />
ifyou are able to.<lb />
Sometimes things in your life<lb />
get too heavy to control alone, and<lb />

Not another public affair<lb />
When your relationship<lb />
is just too much<lb />
MEREDITH STEWART<lb />
SENIOR WRITER<lb />
Relationships always have their ups and downs,<lb />
but when the downs become an everyday occurrence,<lb />
that is a sign that something is wrong. Ifyou have<lb />
been together for a long time then you will usually try<lb />
to make things work even when they don't.<lb />
Say you've been up all night crying over a fight<lb />
with your boyfriendgirlfriend. Your eyes are all puffy<lb />
and your mind is anywhere except schoolwork. You are<lb />
emotionally and physically exhausted because you did<lb />
not get much sleep and this is becoming a regular thing.<lb />
You think you are in love, but it is really more stress<lb />
than you can handle. What do you do? People get stuck<lb />
in their comfort zone, and no matter how stressful or<lb />
crazy the relationship gets, they try to stay and fix it.<lb />
"You are torn because you know that you still<lb />
love them, but you know that there is no way to make<lb />
things really work. You feel tempted to keep things<lb />
going because you care about them so much you do<lb />
not want to lose them, especially as a friend. You do<lb />
not want to go through the whole break up thing and<lb />
break their heart, but you are just not happy anymore<lb />
said Cat Stallings, junior English major.<lb />
How about this scenario: For the past month or so,<lb />
you and your significant other have been getting in<lb />
arguments every day. Whether it is over big or small<lb />
things, they are still annoying and tense, which really<lb />
puts a burden on both people. Sometimes there are dif-<lb />
ferences that cannot be overlooked and some people are<lb />
just not meant to be together, so how do you know?<lb />
"Love is not easy, but it should never be that hard<lb />
says John Stallings, freshman biology major.<lb />
When you are the person in the relationship, it<lb />
is really difficult to admit that there's a big problem.<lb />
Everyone else can tell that you are unhappy with<lb />
the way things are going and your friends are really<lb />
worried about the both of you.<lb />
"I had a friend who was obsessed over a girl and<lb />
it lasted for months. Finally I was just like, please get<lb />
over her, and he blew up at me. He did not talk to me<lb />
for weeks, but finally he came to his senses and got<lb />
over her. I could not believe that he acted like that<lb />
said Luke Rayson, freshman, communication major.<lb />
When you are the person who is in the relationship<lb />
When you are constantly upset with your.significant<lb />
other like the people shown above, it may be too late.<lb />
with all the problems, it is really hard to see what is really<lb />
going on. Many people who have an unhealthy relation-<lb />
ship would not necessarily think that they are in one.<lb />
Where to draw the line is up to the individual<lb />
couple. A few years together is much more difficult<lb />
than just a few months. It is best to end the relation-<lb />
ship whenever you notice that you are not happy any<lb />
more. I know that may sound selfish, but what is the<lb />
point of being in a relationship if both of you are not<lb />
happy? Do what is right for you and your partner.<lb />
Ending the relationship in the earlier stages of<lb />
the arguments, late night fights, stress and chaos<lb />
increases the chances of being friends afterward.<lb />
Many of you have gotten to the point in a relationship<lb />
where things get a little crazy, so just go with your<lb />
heart and make the best of everything.<lb />

STAFF WRITER<lb />
When walking into U.B.E<lb />
one thing is made very clear,<lb />
and that is the fact that the Nike<lb />
logo is on a lot more merchandise<lb />
throughout the store. According<lb />
the store manager, Sue Stamats,<lb />
ECU has signed a five year con-<lb />
tract with Nike to produce all of<lb />
the Pirate sportswear.<lb />
Stamas guarantees that next<lb />
year there will be even more Nike<lb />
apparel sold than this year. Other<lb />
new additions at U.B.E. include<lb />
Adidas shorts and New Era base-<lb />
ball caps.<lb />
The clothing, being Nike,<lb />
is reasonably priced and can be<lb />
found toward the back of the store.<lb />
U.B.E. is offering Nike polo shirts,<lb />
T-shirts, shorts and pullovers.<lb />
The Nike emblem can also<lb />
be found at the football stadium.<lb />
While being interviewed at the<lb />
football game, a camera shot the<lb />
Nike sign being worn by football<lb />
coach Skip Holtz on both his base-<lb />
ball cap and shirt.<lb />
U.B.E. is not the only store<lb />
with these changes. The ECU<lb />
Student Store also has new items.<lb />
According to sophomore Jessica<lb />
Dunlow, who helped volunteer at<lb />
the student store kiosk, the student<lb />
store is offering new purple haze<lb />
T-shirts and other ECU attire.<lb />
These trendy alterations to the<lb />
ECU apparel will hopefully attract<lb />
more people to purchase ECU<lb />
clothing and display the colors and<lb />

Assistant professor for<lb />
the College of Fine Arts and<lb />
Communication, Erick Green is<lb />
among the newest members of<lb />
the ECU faculty. Green has a lot<lb />
to offer ECU with his impressive<lb />
work and life history.<lb />
EC: Where are you from?<lb />
Green: I grew up in Durham<lb />
Chapel Hill but I was born<lb />
in East Pakistan, which at the<lb />
time was called Bangladesh.<lb />
My dad was a journalist. He joined<lb />
the Foreign Press Corp so we<lb />
traveled as youngsters around<lb />
South Africa and Bangladesh.<lb />
EC: Where did you<lb />
attend college?<lb />
Green: I have a degree in<lb />
architectural design from<lb />
North Carolina State Univer-<lb />
sity in Raleigh and a master's<lb />
degree at the University of South-<lb />
ern California in the school of<lb />
cinema television.<lb />
EC: What did you do afterward?<lb />
Green: I worked for five<lb />
years as a camera and lighting<lb />
assistant in Los Angeles and<lb />
then for five years after that<lb />
I worked as a freelance<lb />
cinematographer and director.<lb />
When I was camera assist-<lb />
ing I worked as an intern on<lb />
Batman Forever and was an<lb />
assistant for Alien: Resurrec-<lb />
tion with Sigourney Weaver. I<lb />
have also worked on a television<lb />
series called "Maloney for a<lb />
variety of commercials pro-<lb />
moting Bank of America and<lb />
Pillsbury, documentaries and<lb />
music videos.<lb />
EC: How did you choose ECU?<lb />
Green: I've had a belief, espe-<lb />
cially since digital cameras and<lb />
editing have better quality and<lb />
as more channels on television<lb />
and the internet open up for fur-<lb />
ther distribution, that production<lb />
can be done in many parts of<lb />
the country, not just Los<lb />
Angeles.<lb />
I decided to move to a regional<lb />
market and be a teacher and<lb />
a film maker to put that to<lb />
the test. North Carolina is the land<lb />
of my heritage. It all came down to<lb />
that. It is a place I feel grounded<lb />
as an individual and as a sto-<lb />
ryteller. It is an exciting place<lb />
for me to explore characters and<lb />
film and video ideas.<lb />
EC: What appeals to you the most<lb />
about ECU?<lb />
Green: It is a beautiful<lb />
campus. I like the atmosphere<lb />
of the campus. I enjoy the School<lb />
of Communication because<lb />
there are teachers here from<lb />
many different disciplines, which<lb />
is an environment you would not<lb />
find at a film school that only<lb />
teaches film.<lb />

SENIOR WRITER<lb />
ECU punter Ryan Dougherty<lb />
said before Saturday night's home<lb />
opener against Memphis that he<lb />
hoped the fans would be ready. The<lb />
fans were ready, and players and<lb />
coaches alike credited the Pirate<lb />
Nation for motivating the Pirate<lb />
during a second-half rally as ECU<lb />
overcame a 20-7 halftime deficit to<lb />
defeat Memphis 35-20 at Dowdy-<lb />
Ficklen Stadium.<lb />
"It's so fun to come out to see<lb />
and hear the crowd so pumped<lb />
up said Dougherty. "It's gotta<lb />
be intimidating Qfor the visiting<lb />
team. It's just a great atmosphere<lb />
and it makes the game so much<lb />
more fun to have that 12th man<lb />
behind you<lb />
Student tickets sold out three<lb />
days before the game and the<lb />
crowd is expected to be even<lb />
larger than the 37,431 in atten-<lb />
dance next weekend when the<lb />
Pirates play host to fourth-ranked<lb />
West Virginia.<lb />
"This was a great crowd said<lb />
Memphis coach Tommy West fol-<lb />
lowing the loss. "1 thought they<lb />
got some momentum going and<lb />
then their crowd got into it and<lb />
we made some mistakes<lb />
The first of those mistakes<lb />
resulted in the first defensive<lb />
touchdown by the Pirates in the<lb />
Skip Holtz era.<lb />
With the Pirates trailing 20-<lb />
14 early in the fourth quarter and<lb />
Memphis just getting the ball back<lb />
following James Pinkney's second<lb />
interception, reserve linebacker<lb />
Zach Slate made the best play of<lb />
his young career.<lb />
Memphis quarterback Martin<lb />
Hankins dropped back from his<lb />
own 19 to attempt a screen pass.<lb />
Slate read the play perfectly and<lb />
the redshirt sophomore said he<lb />
was just trying to deflect the pass.<lb />
Instead he tipped it up to himself<lb />
and returned it for the go-ahead<lb />
score, which ultimately became<lb />
the game-winner.<lb />
"I'm still having a hard<lb />
time believing that really hap-<lb />
pened said Slate following the<lb />
game. "It was so much fun. I<lb />
took a couple steps, hit the tight<lb />
end and I saw the quarterback<lb />
step to throw a lateral, and I put<lb />
my hand up there just to block it<lb />
or bat it down.<lb />
"It tipped up a couple of feet<lb />

man, here we go The first thing<lb />
I did was make sure I had it with<lb />
two hands, then just headed for<lb />
ECU<lb />

Memphis Z U<lb />
the goal line<lb />
The interception sent a shock<lb />
wave through Dowdy-Ficklen Sta-<lb />
dium and made it impossible for the<lb />
Tigers to regain any momentum.<lb />
"We feed off the crowd's<lb />
excitement and enthusiasm Holtz<lb />
said. "That was one of the reasons<lb />
we were so excited about playing<lb />
at home<lb />
"The crowd Saturday night was<lb />
the best since I've been here. They<lb />
were awesome. I was impressed<lb />
with the way things started rolling<lb />
our way and instead of making just<lb />
a play, it became from one play to<lb />
the next play to the next play, and<lb />
for us it started snowballing posi-<lb />
tive and for Memphis, it started<lb />
snowballing negative<lb />
The ECU defense, which could<lb />
not stop Memphis in the first half,<lb />
forced four turnovers and allowed<lb />
Memphis to convert just one of<lb />
nine third downs in the second half<lb />
while scoring twice. Holtz said he<lb />
challenged his team in the locker<lb />
room at halftime.<lb />
"I told them we were losing<lb />
the space battle on defense Holtz<lb />
said. "I told them if we want to<lb />
win we have to have a stop on<lb />
defense, we have to step up<lb />
and start making plays on space. I<lb />
didn't say anything magical. I chal-<lb />
lenged them and they responded<lb />
The second defensive score<lb />
was the final score of the game.<lb />
Senior cornerback Kasey Ross,<lb />
whose big hits in the second half<lb />
motivated a secondary that was<lb />
picked on in the first half, picked<lb />
off a Hankins pass and bolted 77<lb />
yards to the end zone. The return<lb />
was set up by a pair of blocks<lb />
from Wendell Chavis and Scotty<lb />
Robinson, whose third-quar-<lb />
ter sack was ECU's first of<lb />
the year.<lb />
"All 1 thought about was to get<lb />
to the nearest sideline and get to<lb />
the end zone said Ross. "When<lb />
you've been so close, it feels great<lb />
to get a win. The crowd was great.<lb />
That's the 12th man<lb />
The Pirates had forced a com-<lb />
bined five turnovers in their<lb />
first two games without turning<lb />
any of the giveaways into points.<lb />
Saturday night, the Pirate "D"<lb />
forced six turnovers, converting<lb />
those into 28 second-half points.<lb />
"This is the first time we've<lb />
scored on anything other than<lb />
offense since I've been here Holtz<lb />
said. "It was exciting to watch us<lb />
put 14 points on the board with<lb />
our defense. We really made a<lb />
big emphasis about it. It wasn't<lb />
enough just to make the turnover,<lb />
now they're trying to convert it<lb />
into points and make something<lb />
happen that gonna change the<lb />
outcome of the game<lb />
Holtz added that playing in<lb />
front of an enthusiastic home<lb />
crowd was tremendous.<lb />
"They were huge Holtz<lb />
said. "To come in here 0-2 and<lb />
lose a couple close games and to<lb />
have the support that we have in<lb />
this program. One of the truly<lb />
special things about being at East<lb />
Carolina is the support of the<lb />
Pirate Nation. This team plays<lb />
with a lot of heart and they are fun<lb />
to watch. That in turn, makes the<lb />
fans get into it even more<lb />
Dougherty hopes the crowd<lb />
will have an even bigger influ-<lb />
ence when the Mountaineers<lb />
come to Greenville.<lb />
"I hope it's more packed out<lb />
each and every game, especially<lb />
with West Virginia coming in<lb />
Dougherty said. "I hope the fans<lb />
are just as pumped, if not more.<lb />
It'll be great if we can sell this<lb />
thing out and there's not an empty<lb />
seat in the house<lb />

Wilmington, Penn<lb />
TOMMY GRAHAM<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
The women's soccer team<lb />
dropped two home games, both by a<lb />
margin of one goal over the weekend.<lb />
Heading into the weekend, ECU<lb />
was 4-2 on the season having only<lb />
given up four goals on the year.<lb />
Against UNCW and Penn this past<lb />
weekend, the Lady Pirates almost<lb />
matched that total losing to UNCW<lb />
by a score of 2-1 and Penn 1-0.<lb />
They did not go down without a<lb />
fight however.<lb />
The Lady Pirates expected<lb />
a dogfight with former Colonial<lb />
Athletic Association foe UNCW,<lb />
but the Seahawks gave ECU more<lb />
than they could handle. The first<lb />
half was dominated by the Seahawks<lb />
as the Lady Pirates entered halftime<lb />
trailing l-O.<lb />
As the second half started, the<lb />
Lady Pirates decided it was going<lb />
to be different. Freshman Amy<lb />
Szilard scored her first goal of the<lb />
season in the 51st minute of play<lb />
off an assist from fellow freshman<lb />
Sarah Kirkley (four assists, team<lb />
leading eight points on the year).<lb />
The Seahawks retaliated in the<lb />
70th minute when Kelly Renkin<lb />
scored over ECU keeper Amber<lb />
Campbell. It proved to be the game<lb />
winner as ECU would not get any<lb />
closer. The Lady Pirates had chances<lb />
as in the final 15 minutes of play.<lb />
Sarah Kirkley drilled a break-<lb />
away chance into UNCW goal-<lb />
keeper Jamie Balzarini's stomach<lb />
and Nicole Moore's free kick in the<lb />
waning moments grazed the post.<lb />
"We have to do a better job of<lb />
finishing our chances" said ECU<lb />
Head Coach Rob Donnenwirth.<lb />
The Lady Pirates dropped the<lb />
non conference contest against<lb />

(AP) It's about 20 minutes<lb />
before the winningest coach in<lb />
ECU history is scheduled to<lb />
throw himself back into football.<lb />
But Steve Logan seems concerned<lb />
only with starting off on the right<lb />
note.<lb />
"This is good music, bro<lb />
Logan said, holding a blues CD<lb />
by Luther Allison.<lb />
It's easy to understand why<lb />
Logan wearing a Nike T-shirt,<lb />
shorts and sandals sounds so<lb />
relaxed. The man who led the<lb />
Pirates to 69 wins and five bowl<lb />
games in 11 years now spends<lb />
the college season talking with<lb />
fans instead of living and dying<lb />
with every play And he's found<lb />
a new niche in sports talk radio,<lb />
a medium where members of<lb />
Logan's former profession are<lb />
skewered, scolded and second-<lb />
guessed by anyone with access to<lb />
a phone and an AM dial.<lb />
Logan is hosting a weekday<lb />
show on Raleigh's WDNC-AM<lb />
with the goal of bringing a coach's<lb />
perspective and some sanity to<lb />
football fans. Want to call and ask<lb />
why a team chose to run the ball on<lb />
third-and-6, or go for the 2-point<lb />
conversion? Fine. The coach loves<lb />
it. But don't even think about call-<lb />
ing to breathlessly demand a coach<lb />
be fired. Logan wants no part.<lb />
"I'm on a mission to have some<lb />
fun with the game of football<lb />
because there's so much misery<lb />
out there it's unbelievable Logan<lb />
said. "I'm not smarter than any-<lb />
body. I've had a lot of experiences<lb />
that a lot of people haven't, and<lb />
to take those experiences into the<lb />
radio realm I think is a little bit<lb />
unique<lb />
Logan, 53, is part of a long line<lb />
of coaches to parlay their experi-<lb />
ence into some form of broadcast<lb />
work. In recent years, former<lb />
Mississippi State coach Jackie<lb />
Sherrill and ex-Auburn coach<lb />
Terry Bowden have become hosts<lb />
of their own radio shows, their<lb />
voices carrying added authority<lb />
thanks to their time roaming sta-<lb />

Perm 1-0 on Sunday. The game was<lb />
extremely physical as both teams<lb />
tried to assert their styles of play.<lb />
In the first half, the Lady Pirates<lb />

have posted wins over Mount St.<lb />

Even with the two-game slide,<lb />
the Lady Pirates aren't giving up.<lb />
When asked about the team's over-<lb />

Donnenwirth praised the play of<lb />
his defense and midfielders. With<lb />
conference play rapidly approaching,<lb />
Donnenwirth knows that his team<lb />
will have put the ball in the net to<lb />
produce results.<lb />
"We've got to learn how to<lb />
finish Donnenwirth said.<lb />
Given that the team has depth in<lb />
the backfield and midfield, the Lady<lb />
Pirates are young up front, and that<lb />
youth is going to be tested in the<lb />
next weeks. The Lady Pirates will<lb />

LOGAN continued from A6<lb />
Former ECU Head Coach Steve Logan chats with listeners on the radio.<lb />
Logan is a guy that knows foot-<lb />
ball. And believe me, if I ever had<lb />
a conversation or even had the<lb />
opportunity to listen to him, I was<lb />
going to listen.<lb />
"The guys that are real good<lb />
are the guys that don't guess.<lb />
They're the guys who know what's<lb />
going on<lb />
Only a few weeks in, Logan<lb />
seems well-suited for the job.<lb />
Perhaps more important than his<lb />
successful resume which includes<lb />
spending the past three seasons as<lb />
an assistant coach in NFL Europe<lb />
is Logan's tell-it-like-it-is manner,<lb />
which comes through in just about<lb />
everything.<lb />
"I'm old-fashioned he said.<lb />
"I just think there's some wrong<lb />
things and there's some right<lb />
things. There are gray areas, no<lb />
question. But be direct and if it's<lb />
a good play, call it a good play.<lb />
If it's a good game, call it a good<lb />
game. If it's a bad game, well, it's<lb />
a bad game<lb />
That's exactly what station<lb />
management had in mind. After<lb />
doing segments on sister station<lb />
WRBZ-AM throughout last<lb />
season, Logan earned a two-hour<lb />
afternoon slot on WDNC thanks<lb />
to strong audience response, gen-<lb />
eral manager Brian Malonqy said.<lb />
His first show aired Aug. 28 and is<lb />
scheduled to run through at least<lb />
the end of the college bowl season.<lb />
"He's a natural said Adam<lb />

hosts his own weekday afternoon<lb />
show.<lb />
By the time he got on the air<lb />
for a segment with former Ala<lb />
bama and Kentucky coach Bill<lb />
Curry, he had turned his attention<lb />
to fans who want N.C. State to fire<lb />
coach Chuck Amato.<lb />
Regardless, those mini-rants<lb />
wedged between stretches of blues<lb />
music going in and out of breaks<lb />
make for good radio.<lb />
"He's an easy sell Gold said.<lb />

he's known to people here. But t<lb />

JARED JACKSON<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
After a bad result in the<lb />
UNCW Invitational last week,<lb />
the men's and women's cross<lb />
country team didn't fare much<lb />
better in the Coastal Carolina<lb />
Invite. The double dual race fea-<lb />
tured UNC and Coastal Carolina<lb />
and was held in Conway, S.C. on<lb />
Saturday.<lb />
The men were swept 50-15 by<lb />
both UNC and Coastal Carolina.<lb />
UNC also swept the Pirate women<lb />
50-15, while Coastal won 37-19.<lb />
On the men's side, Chris<lb />
Belfiore finished in 16th place<lb />
with a time of 27:27:74. Stephan<lb />
Tausend finished next with a<lb />
time of 27:37:82. These two<lb />
rotated the top honors for ECU.<lb />
Last week it was Tausend that<lb />
Finished before Belfiore.<lb />
As for the rest of the men's<lb />
times, Rich Saunders finished<lb />
22nd with a time of 28:32:90.<lb />
Will Collins followed him at 23rd<lb />
with a time of 28:33:73. Andrew<lb />
Nastasiak finished 25th with the<lb />
time of 29:58:19. Bryan Snow<lb />
followed him at 26th with a<lb />
time of 31:43:39 to round out<lb />
the men's team.<lb />
Nicole Briggs was the top<lb />
women's finisher, tallying an<lb />
11th place result with a time<lb />
of 19:22:80. It was the second<lb />
consecutive meet that she has<lb />
had the best time for the women.<lb />
Hayley Flynn followed in next<lb />
at the 12th spot with a time of<lb />
19:25:39. Tayleigh Davis placed<lb />
ECU'S Tayleigh Davis is trailed by<lb />
another Pirate runner.<lb />
next for the Pirates at the 16th<lb />
position with a time of 20:09:26.<lb />
Samantha Lichtner trailed Davis,<lb />
finishing 18th with a time of<lb />
20:20:97. Aisha Bilal-Mack<lb />
crossed the finish line in 20th<lb />
with a time of 20:37:93. Danielle<lb />
Fetty followed her with a time of<lb />
20:38:81. Hollie Brooks was 21st<lb />
with the time of 20:50:10. Erinn<lb />
Latta followed her to round out the<lb />
invite for the Lady Pirates with<lb />
a time of 21:12:76.<lb />
"The top two runners on the<lb />
women side all had better times<lb />
than they had last week said<lb />
ECU Head Coach Curt Kraft in<lb />
a press release. "The men ran<lb />
their 8K after running a 5K at the<lb />
Seahawk Invitational last week. I<lb />
think next time they will have a<lb />
better feeling for everything and<lb />
improve next week<lb />
After opening the season with<lb />
disappointing results, both the men<lb />
and women will look to improve in<lb />
the Old North State Invite, which<lb />
will be held at Greensboro, N.C. On<lb />
Sept. 30th, the Pirates will host<lb />
the McAlister's Deli Invite<lb />
at Lake Kristi.<lb />
