Annual Walk to D'Feet<lb />
ALS quickly approaching<lb />
This year's annual Walk to D'Feet will take place on Sept. 30 at the Town Commons to raise funds to research Lou Gehrig's disease, a disorder that causes muscle tissue to degenerate.<lb />
Efforts of many<lb />
combine to support a<lb />
great cause<lb />
ELISA BIZZOTTO<lb />
STAFF WRITF.R 1<lb />
With this year's Walk to D'Feet<lb />
ALS approaching in less than tw-<lb />
weeks, participants throughout<lb />
eastern North Carolina are greatly<lb />
anticipating its arrival.<lb />
The annual walk, which is<lb />
held to raise funds to support<lb />
research of Amyotrophic Lateral<lb />
Sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig's dis-<lb />
ease, has become a staple here in<lb />
Greenville every September since<lb />
2000.<lb />
This year's event is to be<lb />
held on Sept. 30 at its usual loca-<lb />
tion on the Town Commons and<lb />
will be administered by the Jim<lb />
"Catfish "Hunter Chapter of theALS<lb />
Association. Participants register<lb />
for the event as individuals or<lb />
as teams to walk the designated<lb />
route and subsequently donate<lb />
money or are sponsored by others<lb />
who donate to their effort. All<lb />
proceeds go to supporting ALS<lb />
research, patient support services<lb />
and to raise public awareness of<lb />
the disease.<lb />
Participants in the Down<lb />
East Walk gather from all over<lb />
Greenville, including the ECU<lb />
community, as well as from<lb />
neighboring towns across east-<lb />
ern North Carolina. According<lb />
to Jamie Ebert, a member of the<lb />
Catfish Chapter, 300 out of the<lb />
750 walkers last year were ECU<lb />
student athletes. Others involved<lb />
through the university are the<lb />
ECU Baseball team, several Greek<lb />
organizations, organizations<lb />
from Allied Health Sciences, the<lb />
Volunteer and Service<lb />
Learning Center and the family<lb />
and friends of former. ECU coach<lb />
Keith LeClair. Ebert is grateful<lb />
for the high level of awareness of<lb />
ALS in the community and hopes<lb />
that this year's Down East Walk<lb />
will attribute significant proceeds<lb />
to further the fight against the<lb />
disease.<lb />
ALS, which presently has nei-<lb />
ther a known cause nor a known<lb />
cure, affects as many as 30,000<lb />
people a year with an average of<lb />
IS new diagnosed cases each day.<lb />
According to the ALS Association,<lb />
the disease which claimed the life<lb />
of baseball legend Lou Gehrig, is<lb />
a progressive neurodegenerative<lb />
disorder that affects nerve cells in<lb />
the brain and in the spinal cord.<lb />
The most unfortunate part about<lb />
the disease is the fact that while<lb />
one's body gradually degenerates,<lb />
one's mind and thoughts remain<lb />
sharp and unimpaired.<lb />
Randall Martoccia, chair of<lb />
the local City Walk Committee,<lb />
emphasizes that while the event<lb />
is geared towards fighting a very<lb />
serious illness, the walk itself<lb />
is not only self-fulfilling, but is<lb />
also fun.<lb />
"The desirej to do good for<lb />
people need not be serious and<lb />
dull, nor may it require a lifestyle<lb />
revision Martoccia adds that<lb />
it is important to find any cause<lb />
that instills passion and find out<lb />
how to help.<lb />
Registration will begin at 9<lb />
a.m. and the walk begins at 10 a.m.<lb />
Refreshments will be provided<lb />
and entertainment will include<lb />
local musician Jennifer Licko and<lb />
Brian Bailey of Channel 9 will be<lb />
the master of ceremonies. Anyone<lb />
interested should register as soon<lb />
as possible, as early registration<lb />
will encourage opportunities for<lb />
a greater donation. Last year, the<lb />
event raised $43,000 and this<lb />
year's goal is $55,000.<lb />
To register for this year's<lb />
Walk to D'Feet ALS, visit the<lb />
Catfish Chapter Web site at<lb />

Young girls study Spanish to benefit their futures and careers.<lb />
ECU using gasohol,<lb />
refined oil<lb />
ZACK HILL<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Recently, "How 'bout them gas<lb />
prices?" has replaced, "How 'bout<lb />
the weather? " as the redundant con-<lb />
versational topic. The seemingly<lb />
endless rise in petroleum prices<lb />
have sent many around the world<lb />
in search of alternative sources<lb />
of energy.<lb />
One method is substituting<lb />
gasoline with ElO, also known<lb />
as gasohol. Gasohol is composed<lb />
of 90 percent gasoline and 10<lb />
percent ethanol and has the added<lb />
benefit of cleaner emissions. The<lb />
ethanol component is made up of<lb />
agricultural products, like corn,<lb />
which are grown in eastern North<lb />
Carolina.<lb />
George Harrell, senior asso-<lb />
ciate vice chancellor for campus<lb />
operations, sees gasohol as a<lb />
way to help in a statewide initia-<lb />
tive to reduce the state's reliance<lb />
on petroleum.<lb />
"It will burn in anything<lb />
said Harrell. "We use it in our<lb />
vehicles, our equipment and<lb />
our mowers<lb />
Harrell said the change should<lb />
save about 10,000 gallons of petro-<lb />
leum per year.<lb />
Because of the removal of<lb />
some additives in gasoline, it is<lb />
likely that there is at least a small<lb />
amount of gasohol in the gas you<lb />
pump everyday.<lb />
"There's a little bit in almost all<lb />
gasoline now Harrell said.<lb />
The costs of gasohol and<lb />
gasoline are comparable.<lb />
"The cost is very close, within<lb />
pennies Harrell said.<lb />
Gasohol should become<lb />
even more readily available<lb />
with the addition of a gasohol<lb />
plant in Aurora currently under<lb />
construction.<lb />
Gasohol is not the only<lb />
alternative into which the<lb />
university is looking.<lb />
"We're hoping the Student<lb />
Transit buses will covert to<lb />
biodiesel Harrell said.<lb />
Harrell also said that ECU<lb />
is moving toward the use of re-<lb />
refined oils.<lb />
"The oil is taken out, goes<lb />
back to the refinery and is then<lb />
returned Harrell said. "It<lb />
saves about 1,200 quarts of new<lb />
motor oil<lb />
So far, the program has<lb />
been working.<lb />
"We've had no problems since<lb />
the first tanker arrived in late<lb />
May Harrell said.<lb />
Though not yet readily avail-a<lb />
able to most consumers in North <lb />
Carolina, gasohol use is grow-J<lb />
ing nationwide, especially in the 3<lb />
Midwest. Along with E85, it is "1<lb />
the only type of gasoline sold in <lb />
the state of Minnesota, according<lb />
to Wikipedia.org.<lb />

The number of Spanish-<lb />

matically. However, the number<lb />
of hospital interpreters is not<lb />
rising at the same rate. The Brody<lb />

"The Latino population is<lb />

su salud creatively speaks to<lb />
the needs of both patients and<lb />

a clinical instructor at the<lb />
University of North Carolina at<lb />

"The need is astounding. We<lb />
believe health care providers<lb />
around the state and the country<lb />
will embrace this program with<lb />
open arms, and that will be a major<lb />
step toward relieving a situation<lb />
that is fast becoming a crisis said<lb />
Dr. Maria Clay of ECU.<lb />
Considering that North Caro-<lb />

tion in the 1990s and that nearly<lb />
half of all babies born in North<lb />

this program is long overdue and<lb />
its success will be very effective in<lb />

Autopsy finds former fire chief took<lb />
lethal dose of medication<lb />
(AP) The former fire chief<lb />
of Carrboro ingested a lethal dose<lb />
of medication before he was found<lb />
dead in a hotel room in June,<lb />
according to an autopsy report.<lb />
Rodney Murray, 58, had been<lb />
arrested several times for harass-<lb />
ing a former girlfriend before his<lb />
death. He retired in March after<lb />
spending several months on medi-<lb />
cal leave.<lb />
The medical examination<lb />
found that Murray had high doses<lb />
of diphenhydramine, a drug com-<lb />
monly found in sleep medication,<lb />
and alcohol in his blood. The<lb />
examiner wrote that police found<lb />
a package of sleep aid medication<lb />
in the hotel room at LaQuinta Inn<lb />
near Raleigh-Durham Interna-<lb />
tional Airport.<lb />
A month before his death,<lb />
Murray agreed to plead guilty to<lb />
stalking and other charges in a<lb />
deal that allowed his immediate<lb />
release from jail. He was placed on<lb />
probation for five years, ordered<lb />
not to drink alcohol and to stay<lb />
away from ex-girlfriend Gina<lb />
Ambrosecchia for the duration.<lb />
Murray was named chief in<lb />
Carrboro in 1994 and previously<lb />

Rogers made a pitch for regula-<lb />

Rogers said the company needs<lb />
the 1,600 megawatts of extra<lb />
power, enough to power about 1.4<lb />
million North Carolina homes, at<lb />
the utility's Cliffside site on the<lb />
Cleveland-Rutherford county line<lb />
primarily to keep up with growth.<lb />
Duke Knergy said each year it adds<lb />
about 50,000 homes, stores and<lb />
industries to its customer base.<lb />
That would mean about 250,000<lb />
additional customers by 2011, the<lb />

Worker trapped in vat of<lb />
chocolate<lb />
Darmin Garcia, an employee<lb />
at a Wisconsin factory that makes<lb />
premium chocolate, got too much<lb />
of a good thing when he slipped<lb />
into a vat of the stuff.<lb />
Garcia spent more than two<lb />
hours chest deep in a vat of dark<lb />

Kenosha, the Milwaukee Journal-<lb />

"It was in my hair, in my ears,<lb />
my mouth, everywhere Garcia<lb />

pounds. I couldn't move<lb />
In addition to being weighted<lb />
down, Garcia was also hot, since<lb />
the temperature in the vat was 110<lb />
degrees, several degrees hotter<lb />
than a Jacuzzi.<lb />
Garcia's fellow workers tried<lb />
to pull him out but his clothes<lb />
were stuck on a roller and liquid<lb />
chocolate has a consistency some-<lb />
thing like quicksand. After the<lb />
workers added cocoa butter to the<lb />
vat to thin the mixture, firefight-<lb />

could be freed.<lb />
After his ordeal, Garcia<lb />
was examined at a hospital and<lb />

The OOURIO EFFECT<lb />
America insists on making race an issue Contestant division in 'Survivor: Cook<lb />
When will it ever take a backseat<lb />
to the more pressing matters?<lb />
ELIZABETH LAUTEN<lb />
CONTRIBUTING WRITER<lb />
With Hollywcxxl abuzz about the new slant of'CBS's<lb />
"Survivor! Cook Islands" scheduled to air tonight, I<lb />
couldn't help myself but to talk about it as well.<lb />
For those of you aren't "E! News" addicts like<lb />
myself, you may not have heard about "Survivor's"<lb />
newest season, which is turning up controversy faster<lb />
than you could believe. In hopes of giving the show<lb />
a new edge, the tribes no longer divided by gender,<lb />
age, or even random. This season you will find them<lb />
divided by race - African-American, Asian-American,<lb />
Hispanic and Caucasian.<lb />
As s.i. in as word of this got out, people have begun<lb />
to throw fits all across the nation, from TV viewers to<lb />
the corporate sponsors of the show. General Motors,<lb />
a long time sponsor of the show, who accredits a good<lb />
portion of the business success the past few years to the<lb />
slum, has pulled out this year due to this divide. Pnxter<lb />
i Gamble refuses to air their commercials during at<lb />
least the first three episodes of the show, waiting to see<lb />
tl' larger public sentiment. Why is the big question.<lb />
Why do people have such a big problem with this divide?<lb />
Kace is perhaps the most obvious physical way to<lb />
separate a large group of people, so why must people<lb />
PIRATE RANTS<lb />
We received no other Pirate Rants today,<lb />
so enjoy the few we did get:<lb />
Dear Sorority Pledge, Your comment about<lb />
drinking downtown just validated the<lb />
negative opinion about your "sisters" or any<lb />
other shallow, cookie-cutter girl who would<lb />
join such an organization. If the reason<lb />
that you are pledging is to drink downtown<lb />
underage then thank you, silly freshman girl<lb />
for validating my opinion of you and others<lb />
like you. You will get so many more drinks<lb />
when your "sisters" haze you for the rest of<lb />
the year. Drink up! (PS. This is Greenville.<lb />
Its not that hard to drink downtown.)<lb />
To the person who stuck up for us smokers<lb />
on campus, I truly thank you. The way I<lb />
see it if people want it to be a non-smoking<lb />
campus, then why not "break bad" and<lb />
make it a dry campus with no alcohol too.<lb />
Then let's see how many people gripe and<lb />
complain about everything. Also if I'm<lb />
smoking and not bothering you and you<lb />
see it as anything more than that? Had the show<lb />
divided the cast by any other physical attribute, hair<lb />
color for example, no one would have cared, and the<lb />
blondes would have been left to fend for themselves.<lb />
As a society, we like to say that race doesn't matter<lb />
anymore, or rather, that is our ideal - that race shouldn't<lb />
limit and set boundaries. Yet it seems to me that at<lb />
every chance, we make it more of an issue than it needs<lb />
to le. How is race ever going to take a backseat to pol it-<lb />
ical or social issues if we keep making it a huge factor?<lb />
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying people are not<lb />
discriminated against or that people are treated fairly<lb />
all the time, but 1 cannot believe that people have to<lb />
make such a big deal out of it. There are many more<lb />
important things to worry about in the world.<lb />
It's wits and strength that help players "outwit, out-<lb />
play" not their skin color, and if nothing else this season<lb />
wiil help prove that. "Cook Islands has the chance to<lb />
prove to the world that no one race is any better than<lb />
the other. So if one tribe goes on a winning streak,<lb />
don't think of it in terms of race, but rather look at the<lb />
individuals on the team and what they're doing right.<lb />
This season of "Survivor" shouldn't be viewed<lb />
any differently than any other in years past. Prove the<lb />
sponsors and America wrong, and lxk beyond race<lb />
when you root for your favorite contestant. Issues only<lb />
exist when we give it attention and power. Let race<lb />
stop being an issue.<lb />
come sit by me and tell me to blow my<lb />
smoke somewhere else, more than likely<lb />
I'll tell you not to breathe or to get over it<lb />
and move.<lb />
I am tired of those lazy bums at the NSO<lb />
being on Facebook instead of working<lb />
For my preppy needs its Burberry for me.<lb />
If Lacoste (French) can be American Prep,<lb />
so can Burberry (English).<lb />
To the person who gets annoyed when people<lb />
text message and walk at the same time.<lb />
Have you thought that maybe I'm trying<lb />
to go to class too and that's why I don't<lb />
sit down and "play with my cell phone<lb />
Glad to hear the Pirate Cub lost thousands<lb />
of people's information after they used their<lb />
credit cards online to purchase the ticket<lb />
package. Thank you for making me run<lb />
around and wait in line only to never end<lb />
up with anything. Doing a good job guys!<lb />
Islands' more primitive than environment<lb />
Initial focus on race, rather than<lb />
ability, is a disappointment<lb />
SARAH BELL<lb />
EDITOR IN CHIEF<lb />
Last season's promotion for CBS' "Survivor"<lb />
touted that 18 strangers would be "stranded on a<lb />
remote island in Vanuatu forced to band together<lb />
and carve out a new existence, using their collective<lb />
wits to make surviving in their rugged and primitive<lb />
environment a little easier<lb />
Unfortunately, this season's "Survivor" boasts<lb />
much more than a "primitive environment" - it builds<lb />
on a primitive concept as well.<lb />
Although the show has always revolved around<lb />
competition in a ruthless "may the best (most back-<lb />
stabbing, tough-yet-likable) man or woman win" fash-<lb />
ion, the new season has chosen to obscure its previous<lb />
focus on individual ability and teamwork in favor<lb />
of highlighting something far less important: race.<lb />
"Survivor. Cook Islands which premieres<lb />
tonight, will segregate its 20 contestants along racial<lb />
lines. The cast will be split into four teams: The<lb />
Aitutaki (Hispanic-American tribe), the Rarotonga<lb />
(Caucasian-American tribe), the Manihiki (African-<lb />
American tribe) and the Puka Puka (Asian-American<lb />
tribe).<lb />
Once criticized for collecting a cast that<lb />
was "too-white the creative team behind the<lb />
show divvied up the contestants in what<lb />
they say was a positive effort to diversify.<lb />
"We actually felt that dividing them ethnically was<lb />
a positive idea, because it came from our discussions in<lb />
casting, and we kept coming up with the same theme,<lb />
which was ethnic pride said "Survivor" host Jeff Probst.<lb />
Ethnic pride? As all the contestants are Ameri-<lb />
can, one would think they share more cultural<lb />
ties and life experiences together as Ameri-<lb />
cans than those had separately in racial groups.<lb />
Instead of a catalyst for promoting diversity (and<lb />
inclusion), the team selection seems more like a desper-<lb />
ate attempt to rejuvenate the show's declining ratings.<lb />
If the publicity surrounding the racial grouping<lb />
is any indication, CBS' ploy might be working. With<lb />
media hype going haywire more viewers will inevi-<lb />
tably tune in, but for the wrong reasons.<lb />
Usually viewers must watch "Survivor" for a few<lb />
episodes to decide which team they like, and for which<lb />
contestant they are ultimately cheering. Now, con-<lb />
fronted with teams chosen on the basis of race, view-<lb />
ers will immediately identify with the group whose<lb />
members' appearance reflects their own, instead of<lb />
the contestants with the best skills or personality.<lb />
Rather than challenging viewers to judge con-<lb />
testants on their abilities, this season's "Survivor"<lb />
regrettably makes something as shallow as a skin<lb />
color a reason to root for a specific team.<lb />
The idea seems like a step in the wrong direction.<lb />
As Alex Nogales, president & CEO of the National<lb />
Hispanic Media Coalition, said, "For years we've been<lb />
laboring to be integrated, an integrated society. Now<lb />
we are going to pit one group against the other. It<lb />
doesn't speak very well<lb />
CBS issued a statement saying it "recognizes the<lb />
controversial nature of the show's format, but has<lb />
full confidence in the producers and their ability to<lb />
produce the program in a responsible manner<lb />
I wish I shared their confidence.<lb />

College students enjoying the aesthetics and privacy of new dorms.<lb />
(MCT) Amanda Johnson<lb />
was on a mission to find the gym<lb />
as she roamed a brightly lit hall-<lb />
way with a friend on move-in day<lb />
last week.<lb />
"I can't wait to go swimming<lb />
Heather Schmoele told her as they<lb />
checked out their new living quar-<lb />
ters at the University of Missouri<lb />
at St. Louis. A glistening pool<lb />
beckoned outside.<lb />
Today's residence halls offer<lb />
not only fancier amenities but also<lb />
more intimacy and convenience,<lb />
with more single rooms and pri-<lb />
vate bathrooms. In ways small<lb />
and large, trends in student hous-<lb />
ing reflect changing lifestyles of<lb />
today's youths, from increased<lb />
desires for privacy to the respect<lb />
for choice and flexibility to the<lb />
premium plated on aesthetics<lb />
and design.<lb />
"We put a lot of research<lb />
and study into it Dey said. "We<lb />
looked at demand, what students<lb />
say they want, but also what we<lb />
felt was an important part of being<lb />
educated at a university, which is<lb />
to be flexible and to learn how to<lb />
get along with others of diverse<lb />
backgrounds. So while they may<lb />
have wanted to live alone, we<lb />
decided this was better<lb />
David Szwarsztein, a senior<lb />
at Washington University, spent<lb />
his freshman year in a traditional<lb />
style residence hall with two to a<lb />
room and a community bathroom<lb />
down the hall. He liked the nar-<lb />
rower hallways, it made people<lb />
feel closer by, he said.<lb />
Some of the newer dorms<lb />
with their wider hallways and<lb />
closed doors make it feel more like<lb />
a hotel and less homey, he said.<lb />
Indeed, some nostalgia exists<lb />
for the "rustic" experience of com-<lb />
munity bathrooms and cramped<lb />
quarters, and administrators<lb />
say they realize they might be<lb />
missing out on something in the<lb />
new halls.<lb />
Schools are in the midst of a<lb />
building boom in student hous-<lb />
ing. In part, it is a response to the<lb />
swelling college student popula-<lb />
tion. About 17.6 million students<lb />
are projected to be enrolled in<lb />
U.S. colleges and universities this<lb />
fall, up from 12.4 million just 25<lb />
years ago.<lb />
Also, much of the college<lb />
housing stock is from the 1950s<lb />
and 1960s, during a previous<lb />
wave of increasing enrollment.<lb />
Many of those facilities are<lb />
aging, so schools are building<lb />
replacements.<lb />

THE EAST CAROLINIAN NEWS<lb />
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 2006<lb />
Facebook users want about-face on tattle tool<lb />
(MCT) Ben K. may have<lb />
changed his relationship status to<lb />
single, but, really, does every one<lb />
of his friends on Facebook need to<lb />
be informed of it in a headline at<lb />
t 3.r in the morning?<lb />
Yet, this week, the hanging-<lb />
all-our-laundry-out-there genera-<lb />
tion got a little too much face in<lb />
its Facebook as the popular Web<lb />
site added a feature that, like a<lb />
personal news ticker, chronicles<lb />
every online move they and their<lb />
friends make.<lb />
Nine million students hang<lb />
out online on Facebook, each<lb />
with his or her own Facebook<lb />
"wall" of pictures and posts.<lb />
The new feature allows users,<lb />
leaves them no choice, really, to<lb />
find out what friends have been<lb />
doing through "news feeds" and<lb />
"mini feeds" that appear on their<lb />
page automatically.<lb />
"It's so extreme said Mike<lb />
Carley, 22, a Penn senior from<lb />
Los Angeles. "1 don't really need<lb />
to know my friends at USC are<lb />
going to a party. It's really too<lb />
much information. A bunch of<lb />
people don't care whose wall I<lb />
posted on at 3:45 a.m. What if I<lb />
reject a friend request, will it say<lb />
that too? That's ugly<lb />
This made personal news<lb />
travel faster, and more awkwardly,<lb />
through their network of friends<lb />
than a lot of Facebook fans were<lb />
ready for.<lb />
"I absolutely hate it said<lb />
Nawad Maalouf, 19, a junior at<lb />
I'enn. "I don't want every detail<lb />
out. It used to take some effort<lb />
to stalk someone. Now the stalk-<lb />
ing just conies to you. You see if<lb />
people have declined invitations,<lb />
updated their relationship status,<lb />
written on other people's walls<lb />
But isn't sharing information<lb />
the whole point ofFacebook.com?<lb />
That you can know all about<lb />
people, when they're online, who<lb />
their friends are, what music<lb />
they're into, before you've even<lb />
gone out for coffee?<lb />
"All the things they are<lb />
making public are things that<lb />
are already public. What is also<lb />
important is that Facebook took<lb />
away a measure of their control<lb />
The changes also brought<lb />
up some serious privacy issues:<lb />
Maalouf said she had friends who<lb />
had accepted invitations to gay<lb />
events who did not necessarily<lb />
want their sexual orientation<lb />
broadcast to a vast network of<lb />
casual acquaintances.<lb />
Then again, the whole nature<lb />
of what is a "friend which on<lb />
Facebook means you have autho-<lb />
rized a person to hang on your<lb />
online wall, may be at the heart<lb />
of the controversy.<lb />
"On Facebook, you only have<lb />
one kind of friend said Pew's<lb />
Lenhart. "It assumes this intense<lb />
level of friendship for everyone<lb />
on the network. People can't do<lb />
things that might not be noticed.<lb />
What Facebook has assumed<lb />
is that everyone cares. And<lb />
they don't<lb />
The fury of the backlash led<lb />
A nueva generation poised to shape pop culture<lb />
(MCT) In the 1960s and<lb />
'70s, it was baby boomers with<lb />
rock and disco, sexual liberation<lb />
and political activism. In the '80s<lb />
and '90s, it was African Ameri-<lb />
cans and hip-hop that trans-<lb />
formed the way we sang, danced,<lb />
talked and dressed.<lb />
And now, at the start of the<lb />
21st century, it's a new gen-<lb />
eration of Hispanic who are<lb />
poised to become the next major<lb />
cultural drivers.<lb />
While the political spotlight<lb />
has been on Hispanic immigrants,<lb />
social scholars and purveyors<lb />
of media and entertainment are<lb />
already focusing on their chil-<lb />
dren, an exploding generation of<lb />
bilingual, bicultural Hispanics<lb />
who are rapidly emerging as a<lb />
force that will affect music, televi-<lb />
sion, movies, fashion, advertising,<lb />
slang, and just about everything<lb />
else in American pop culture.<lb />
Because they grew up in the<lb />
United States fluent in two lan-<lb />
guages and two cultures, young<lb />
American born Hispanics, who<lb />
often call themselves Latinos,<lb />
rather than Hispanics, form a<lb />
kind of bridge. Not only are they<lb />
Latinizing the American main-<lb />
stream, they are Americanizing<lb />
what it means to be Hispanic in<lb />
the United States.<lb />
Whether it's the beat of reg-<lb />
gaeton booming across America<lb />
or the dark-haired, dark-eyed<lb />
Mexican-American actress Eva<lb />
Longoria becoming the hottest<lb />
thing on "Desperate Housewives<lb />
Hispanics are happening.<lb />
The signs of that redefinition<lb />
are everywhere:<lb />
MTV en F.spanol, the U.S.<lb />
Spanish language branch of the<lb />
trendsetting musiclifestyle net-<lb />
work, is changing its name to<lb />
MTV TrSs and revamping its<lb />
programming to appeal to kids<lb />
as hot for 50 Cent as they are for<lb />
Juanes, the multimillion-selling<lb />
Colombian rocker who fills venues<lb />
like Madison Square Garden.<lb />
Corporations are shifting<lb />
from marketing exclusively to<lb />
Hispanics in Spanish and in<lb />
traditional Hispanic media to<lb />
reaching them in Knglish in<lb />
mainstream outlets.<lb />
Toyota ran an ad for its new<lb />
2007 Camry Hybrid on the<lb />
Super Bowl telecast that used the<lb />
way a Hispanic father and son<lb />
switch languages as a metaphor<lb />
for the car.<lb />
"Mira aqui (look here)<lb />
the father says to his son, as he<lb />
explains how the car switches<lb />
between gasoline and electric<lb />
power and how it's "better for<lb />
our future<lb />
"Like you with Knglish and<lb />
Spanish the boy chirps.<lb />
Kim McCullough, corporate<lb />
manager of marketing commu-<lb />
nications for Toyota, says the<lb />
bicultural, bilingual message<lb />
is important. "We recognize<lb />
this is a huge trend that we<lb />
need to be ahead of and not just<lb />
responding to she says.<lb />
"Companies are definitely<lb />
realizing that some Hispanics<lb />
are more comfortable if they<lb />
are spoken to in English says<lb />
Carlos Martinez, general man-<lb />
ager of the Hispanic advertising<lb />
agency Conill LA, which cre-<lb />
ated the Toyota spot. "So, you<lb />
will definitely see more of this<lb />
bilingual advertising<lb />
The message goes both ways.<lb />
Reebok signed reggaeton star<lb />
Daddy Yankee to put his name<lb />
on a line of sneakers primarily<lb />
because the company thought he<lb />
would appeal to Hispanics, but also<lb />
because it thought he would con-<lb />
nect with mainstream customers.<lb />
But figuring out how to reach<lb />
this generation can be difficult,<lb />
in part because these children<lb />
of immigrants are still figuring<lb />
out the unique mix of language,<lb />
culture and identity that goes<lb />
with being Hispanic, or Latino,<lb />
in this country.<lb />
" The word Latino doesn't<lb />
exist outside of the United States<lb />
says Jose Tillan, senior vice presi-<lb />
dent of music programming and<lb />
talent strategy for MTV Latin<lb />
America and MTV TrSs. "It's like<lb />
a new world. The definition of the<lb />
word Latino is up for grabs<lb />
Facebook's founder, a former<lb />
Harvard University student<lb />
named Mark Zuckerberg, to post<lb />
an e-mail assuring the angry<lb />
crowd that the company was<lb />
"listening to all your sugges-<lb />
tions about how to improve the<lb />
product<lb />
He headlined the post, "Calm<lb />
down. Breathe. We hear you<lb />
Yesterday, Facebook spokes-<lb />
woman Melanie Deitch said<lb />
the company was "aggressively<lb />
evaluating" the change.<lb />
But she stressed that the news<lb />
feed addressed "one of the main<lb />
reasons people use Facebook,<lb />
which is to find out what's happen-<lb />
ing with their friends She said<lb />
privacy controls were available<lb />
to screen out information among<lb />
categories of people.<lb />
And she added that at least one<lb />
of the signature Facebook interac-<lb />
tions was still and would always<lb />
remain private, that nonverbal<lb />

Colleges are also paying more<lb />
attention to the little things: the<lb />
details and finishing touches<lb />
like accent walls, fabrics and<lb />
color schemes.<lb />
"Students don't want their<lb />
home to look like a prison said<lb />
Frankie Minor, housing director<lb />
at the Mizzou.<lb />
"These things serve no func-<lb />
tional purpose he said, pointing<lb />
to a row of green tile accenting a<lb />
wall of white in a bathroom, "But<lb />
they look nice<lb />
Webster hired an interior<lb />
design consultant to make sure<lb />
the colors, paints, and fabrics all<lb />
flow together in its new halls.<lb />
John Buck, associate dean of stu-<lb />
dents, explained that they chose<lb />
more exciting, vibrant colors for<lb />
the freshman building and more<lb />
subdued, mature colors for the<lb />
upperclassmen hall.<lb />
Before, there was little thought<lb />
to such decision, it was just the<lb />
cheapest fabric, he said. "There<lb />
was no pop, no attraction<lb />
And this generation<lb />
looks for those kinds of small<lb />
details, he said.<lb />
"The last thing they want<lb />
is a drab, green couch with<lb />
wooden sides he said. "They<lb />
would say, 'How much am I<lb />
paying for this?<lb />
You drank.<lb />
You danced.<lb />

2. Pressure James Pinkney:<lb />
If the Tigers can take advantage of ECU'S youth on the<lb />
offensive line and get pressure on Pinkney, they may be<lb />
able to force him into bad throws like the interception he<lb />
threw at UAB and not allow him to hit open receivers. By<lb />
getting to the quarterback, they may be able to prevent<lb />
ECU from utilizing its talent at wide receiver.<lb />
3. Run the ball:<lb />
The Pirates have struggled to stop the run, allowing<lb />
an average of 263 yards on the ground. If the Tigers<lb />
can get their running game going with Joseph Doss,<lb />
it could be another long day for the ECU defense. In<lb />
order to keep pressure on ECU to score, the Tigers<lb />
must find a way to have more than two "home<lb />

BY RON CLEMENTS<lb />
SENIOR WRITER<lb />
After suffering two close losses<lb />
on the road, the ECU football team<lb />
returns home Saturday for its<lb />
home opener against the Memphis<lb />
Tigers.<lb />
"It'll be nice to be back at home<lb />
after losing two really close games<lb />
on the road said ECU head coach<lb />
, Skip Holtz.<lb />
Memphis (1-1, 0-0 Conference<lb />
USA) has a different look than<lb />
it did a season ago. Gone to the<lb />
Carolina Panthers is all-everything<lb />
running back DeAngelo Williams,<lb />
but Holtz thinks that makes the<lb />
Tigers a much more diverse and<lb />
fcnt offense t?<lb />
"They're a lot more balanced<lb />
because it's not just the DeAngelo<lb />
Williams show anymore Holtz<lb />
said. "We're really gonna get tested<lb />
with their offense Saturday<lb />
The Tigers, who opened the<lb />
season with a 28-25 road loss to<lb />
Ole Miss before thumping 1-AA<lb />
Chattanooga last week, are led by<lb />
quarterback Martin Hankins.<lb />
The redshirt junior has<lb />
passed for 553 yards<lb />
and five touchdowns<lb />
with just one inter-<lb />
ception. Nearly 300<lb />
yards, three touch-<lb />
downs and the pick'<lb />
came against the Moccasins, but<lb />
Hankins had just six incompletions<lb />
in 27 attempts versus Ole Miss.<lb />
Holtz said Hankins' accuracy<lb />
and ability to make plays has<lb />
opened up the play book for Mem-<lb />
phis head coach Tommy West.<lb />
"They're much more balanced<lb />
as a football team than they did a<lb />
year ago Holtz said. "They are<lb />
more heavily throw oriented than<lb />
they are run oriented<lb />
When the Tigers do run the ball,<lb />
it is in the hands of Joseph Doss.<lb />
The 200-pound junior pounded<lb />
his way for 112 yards against the<lb />
Rebels, but carried the ball only six<lb />
times versus UTC.<lb />
One thing the Tigers have done<lb />
in each of their first two games is<lb />
run trick plays. Wide receivers have<lb />
thrown a touchdown pass in both<lb />
games, which should have the ECU<lb />
secondary watchful:<lb />
"I guess we have the wrong guy<lb />
playing quarterback West joked.<lb />
West expects a close game from<lb />
the Pirates, who are a two-point<lb />
favorite at home. Like Holtz, West<lb />
isn't happy with the consistency of<lb />
the running game and the absence<lb />
of Williams is obvious.<lb />
"We don't have the guy to<lb />
make the breakaway run<lb />
West said. "We gotta<lb />
be closer to perfect<lb />

ECU<lb />
1. Eliminate Turnovers:<lb />
The Pirates ere on the plus side of the turnover ratio<lb />
through two games, but they cannot afford to make any<lb />
turnovers against Memphis because they seem to come<lb />
at the most inopportune times. The Tigers have forced<lb />
a turnovers in 122 of their last 141 games, including<lb />
both this year.<lb />
2. Be consistent up front:<lb />
The offensive line for the Pirates must not only protect James<lb />
Pinkney, who sprained his right ankle against UAB, but they<lb />
need to open holes for the stagnant running game.<lb />
3. Utilize Aundrae Allison:<lb />
Allison was shut out against UAB for the first time in<lb />
his ECU career. The ECU coaching staff needs to take<lb />
advantage of Allison's quickness with quick-hitting<lb />
routes to get the ball in the hands of their most danger-<lb />
ous play-maker.<lb />
"I think tht four-man front gave<lb />
us a chance to get our best<lb />
players on the field because<lb />
we are a little bit short, from a<lb />
depth standpoint right now, at<lb />
linebacker Pinkney can create<lb />
plays when they aren't there, and<lb />
I don't think our guy (Hankins)<lb />
can do that<lb />

The Pirates do have a run-<lb />
ning back with breakaway speed,<lb />
but he has his own issues. Chris<lb />
Johnson, who Holtz said "dances<lb />
too much" in the backfield has<lb />
appeared hesitant in the first two<lb />
games and Holtz wants him to be<lb />
more decisive.<lb />
"Chris is always looking for<lb />
the homerun ball Holtz said.<lb />
"Chris gets in the backfield and<lb />
he is dancing too much and cut-<lb />
ting too much. I will live with<lb />
whatever decision he makes as<lb />
long as it is decisive. 1 think he<lb />
played better (at UAB) but we<lb />
need to grow on that. He is still<lb />
not were he needs to be as far as<lb />
his decision-making. He wants<lb />
to do well and get the running<lb />
game on track but in doing so<lb />
he hurts himself. We just have to<lb />
keep working with him and get<lb />
him working downhill<lb />
Johnson is aware of the criti-<lb />
cism and says it's something he's<lb />
working on. With Dominique<lb />
Lindsay out an expected six<lb />
weeks with a torn MCL and<lb />
Brandon Fractious' proclivity to<lb />
fumble, Johnson knows a lot of the<lb />
load will fall on him. The 200-<lb />
pound junior tailback is confident<lb />
that the big plays will be there<lb />
against the Memphis defense.<lb />
"We just gotta run straight<lb />
down hill at them Johnson said.<lb />
"They move around a lot, so as far<lb />
as the stretch plays go and such,<lb />
we just gotta run straight at them<lb />
and the big plays will come<lb />
While the ECU running<lb />
game has been inconsistent, the<lb />
passing game riding the right<lb />
arm of senior quarterback James<lb />
Pinkney has put up good numbers.<lb />
Pinkney has passed for 563<lb />
yards with three scores and<lb />
a pick while hitting nine dif-<lb />
ferent receivers in each game.<lb />
West knows that some of those<lb />
plays were created by Pinkney's<lb />
mobility.<lb />
"I think their quarterback<lb />
is a really great player West<lb />
said. "He's a guy who can create<lb />
plays. I'm not sure our guy can<lb />
do that<lb />
West added that defen-<lb />
sively, the Tigers may "switch<lb />
up defense between 3-4 and 4-3<lb />
looks depending on what the ECU<lb />
offense shows<lb />
Holtz knows that Memphis<lb />
defensive coordinator Joe Lee<lb />
Dunn will present multiple looks<lb />
to the ECU offense.<lb />
"When you look at their<lb />
defense about the only thing that<lb />
you can guarantee is that they<lb />
will have eleven guys on defense<lb />
Holtz said. "They may seem like<lb />
they have twelve or thirteen at<lb />
times with they way that they<lb />
run around. They may have one<lb />
defensive lineman or they may<lb />
have eight defensive linemen. I<lb />
think that we are going to have to<lb />

One area the Pirates have a<lb />
clear edge in is special teams.<lb />
Tigers place kicker Trey Adams<lb />
has not attempted a field goal<lb />
of more than 36 yards, but has<lb />
missed twice on five attempts.<lb />
ECU kicker Robert Lee, who is<lb />
on the Lou Groza Award watch<lb />
list, has missed just twice in his<lb />
last 22 attempts, and is perfect<lb />
on the 2006 season including a<lb />
48-yarder at Navy. Senior punter<lb />
Ryan Dougherty, who struggled<lb />
at Navy but rebounded well<lb />
against the Blazers, was placed<lb />
on the Ray Guy Award watch list<lb />
earlier this week.<lb />
The Pirates lead the all-time<lb />
series between the two schools,<lb />
8-6, but Memphis has won four<lb />
of the last five and ECU has not<lb />
beaten the Tigers since a 32-11<lb />
home win in 2001. Game time<lb />

Pirates set to host<lb />
UNC Wilmington,<lb />

TOMMY GRAHAM<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Sarah Kirkley hasn't waited<lb />
to make an impression in the<lb />
ECU women's soccer program.<lb />
Since joining the Pirates, the<lb />
freshman has notched a team-<lb />
high seven points. Forced into the<lb />
fire after coming from Needham<lb />
Broughton U.S. in Raleigh, she<lb />
has already made her mark on<lb />
the program. She recorded three<lb />
of those points in the game this<lb />
past weekend against Georgia<lb />
State.<lb />
Senior Tara Shaw also added<lb />
two additional goals in the game<lb />
amazingly only five minutes<lb />
apart. Behind Shaw's goals, the<lb />
Pirates beat Georgia State by<lb />
a score of 3-2, bringing their<lb />
season record to 4-2.<lb />
However, it wasn't a perfect<lb />
weekend for ECU when they<lb />
traveled to Raleigh to compete<lb />
in tournament hosted by N.C.<lb />
State. The Pirates fell in the first<lb />
game to American University by<lb />
a score of 1-0. ECU managed<lb />
only six shots on goal and none<lb />
of those were on net.<lb />
"I believe we came out really<lb />
flat at the start of the game<lb />
head coach Rob Donnenwirth<lb />
said. "We just couldn't get it in<lb />
the goal<lb />
Donnenwirth cited his team's<lb />
improved enthusiasm in the<lb />
second half. He was frustrated<lb />
by the inability for the Pirates<lb />
to score on several scoring<lb />
chances.<lb />
The Pirates will host two<lb />
teams over the weekend. They<lb />
face instate rival UNC Wilm-<lb />
ington Friday at 4 p.m. and will<lb />
match up with Penn on Sunday<lb />
at 1 p.m.<lb />
The Seahawks have been a<lb />
perennial rival of ECU's going<lb />
back to the old Colonial Athletic<lb />
Association days. The Pirates<lb />
dropped a heartbreaker in over-<lb />
time 3-2 early last season in<lb />
Wilmington. However, with the<lb />
close location of the schools, the<lb />
rivalry is always a dogfight.<lb />
Donnenwirth feels the same<lb />
way noting that in all the games<lb />
that these two have played against<lb />
each other since he has been at<lb />
ECU, have always been similar<lb />
to two heavyweights trading<lb />
blows.<lb />
"It's going to be extremely<lb />
physical said Donnenwirth, as<lb />
he remarked that at the end of<lb />
the game the officials are still<lb />
making sure no one is missing<lb />
any limbs.<lb />
UNCW is coached by Paul<lb />
Cairney, a two-time all confer-<lb />
ence performer for the men's<lb />
team from 90-93. He has been<lb />
the women's head coach from<lb />
1996 with an overall record of<lb />
94-90-12. His teams have also<lb />
excelled in the classroom even<lb />
receiving the College Team Aca-<lb />
demic Award in 2000, 2001,2003<lb />
and 2004.<lb />
Adding to the heightened ten-<lb />
sion of this weekend's game is the<lb />
fact that it is Parents' Weekend.<lb />
For some of the freshmen players<lb />
on the team this will be the first<lb />
chance that their parents will<lb />
have to see them play at the col-<lb />
legiate level.<lb />
Not to draw attention away<lb />
from the 'other' game this week-<lb />
end, the Pirates play host to<lb />
Penn coming in with a record of<lb />
2-0-1, with two wins being over<lb />
former CAA foe Richmond and<lb />
also Hofstra. The Quakers will<lb />
enter Bunting Field looking to<lb />
continue their unbeaten streak,<lb />
being led by Head Coach Darren<lb />
Ambrose.<lb />
The Quakers, who finished<lb />
8-6-3 in 2005 return 11 letter-<lb />
winners and six starters. Penn's<lb />
experience coqeerns Donnen-<lb />
wirth, who has 15 freshmen on<lb />
the roster.<lb />
The Lady Pirates are off to<lb />
their best start since the 2000<lb />
season when they were also<lb />
started the season with a 4-2<lb />
record. Rachel Hils returned to<lb />
the field against American after<lb />
missing some time with an injury.<lb />
She and Shaw give the Pirates<lb />
veteran leadership and game<lb />
experience on the field. Shaw<lb />
has scored three goals already<lb />
this season almost matching<lb />
her career total of four in three<lb />
season with the Pirates. Shaw is<lb />
a graduate of Great Valley H.S.<lb />
in Malvern, Pa.<lb />
After Friday's game there will<lb />
be an opportunity to "Meet The<lb />

Memphis match-up is a must win<lb />
ECU can't afford to go<lb />
0-2 in conference<lb />
ERIC GILMORE<lb />
SPORTS EDITOR<lb />
Skip Holtz knows that his<lb />
Pirate football team can't win<lb />
a national championship. With<lb />
two heartbreaking losses already<lb />
logged, a BCS bowl is likely out of<lb />
the question as well.<lb />
While the ECU head coach may<lb />
have had lofty preseason expecta-<lb />
tions, another loss would start<lb />
eliminating some more realistic<lb />
results. The team's yearly goal of<lb />
advancing to the Liberty Bowl in<lb />
Memphis as a conference champion<lb />
would fizzle should the Pirates fail<lb />
to end up victors on Saturday.<lb />
Forgive the added pressure<lb />
c oach, but Memphis is a must win.<lb />
This team needs an adrenaline<lb />
shot in the arm to pick up some<lb />
momentum because another loss<lb />
could break the team's already<lb />
fragile morale. Holtz has talked<lb />
repeatedly about reaping the<lb />
rewards of hard work. Not win-<lb />
ning could be detrimental to the<lb />
team's mindset heading into its<lb />
biggest home game since UNC<lb />
traveled to Greenville for the first<lb />
time in 2003.<lb />
The team had an added bounce<lb />
during the offseason after win-<lb />
ning consecutive games to close<lb />
the 2005 season for the first time<lb />
since it won back-to-back contests<lb />
against Rice and SM U midseason.<lb />
Before the separate two-game<lb />
winning streaks, ECU hadn't won<lb />
two straight since 2001.<lb />
With the two losses to open<lb />
the season, the smiles have been<lb />
replaced by grit and determination.<lb />
"Even with all the mistakes<lb />
we made we still had an opportu-<lb />
nity to win Holtz said referring<lb />
to the UAB game. "I think that<lb />
speaks volumes for these players'<lb />
attitudes and their competitive<lb />
nature<lb />
A home date with a top ten<lb />
West Virginia squad looms as an<lb />
ESPN audience will watch the<lb />
Pirates for the first time since a<lb />
home loss to Houston 27-13 in<lb />
2003. A renewed rivalry with<lb />
Virginia, an ACC opponent also<lb />
serves as a sobering reminder that<lb />
the scheduling upgrade remains<lb />
an uphill battle.<lb />
Lose to Memphis and ECU<lb />
could be staring 0-5 in the face<lb />
with a tough out against defend-<lb />
ing Conference USA champion<lb />
Tulsa renewing the conference<lb />
slate. If the Pirates were still<lb />
starving for a win, standing 0-<lb />
6 halfway through the season,<lb />
doubters will start to question<lb />

the team's toughness, leaders and<lb />
coaching staff.<lb />
"My eighth grade football<lb />
coach text messaged me on Sat-<lb />
urday night and he talked about<lb />
that being disappointed is a part<lb />
of life but being discouragement<lb />
is a choice Holtz said. "Right<lb />
now UABj was a disappointing<lb />
loss but we are not going to get<lb />
discouraged, we are not going to<lb />
turn on each other and we are not<lb />
going to fall apart from within<lb />
With increased expectations,<lb />
six consecutive losses could cause<lb />
most teams to cave in. That's why<lb />
stopping Memphis quarterback<lb />
Martin Hankins and running<lb />
back Joseph Doss is so important.<lb />
Because the team lost two gut<lb />
wrenchers doesn't necessarily<lb />
mean that Pirate fans need to<lb />
jump off the bandwagon. They<lb />
need patience, which by mid-<lb />
October many might be consid-<lb />
ered a lofty virtue.<lb />
"You've got to take it one at a<lb />
time said offensive coordinator<lb />
Steve Shankweiler, when asked<lb />
about the importance of the Mem-<lb />
phis game. "Let's leave it at that.<lb />
One at a time<lb />
Looking down the pike, the<lb />
next month is brutal because the<lb />
schedule is so top-heavy. The<lb />
combined record of the first six<lb />
opponents is 8-4 while the last six<lb />
stands at 4-8.<lb />
"We're the pro team here in<lb />
town said defensive coordinator<lb />
Greg Hudson. "It's our job to put a<lb />
product out there that they can be<lb />
proud of. They spend their money<lb />
on us and watch us play. We've got<lb />
to perform for them<lb />
Aside from the future con-<lb />
ference implications, the game<lb />
should have added weight because<lb />
it's the home opener. ECU is 40-<lb />
28-2 all-time in home openers,<lb />
but has only gone 2-4 over the<lb />
last six seasons.<lb />
ECU also has a revenge factor<lb />
that it owes Memphis. The Tigers<lb />
won by three points in the last two<lb />
seasons. Two years ago, Memphis'<lb />
Stephen Gostkowski booted a 35-<lb />
yard field goal with six seconds left<lb />
to down ECU 38-35. In 2005, Mau-<lb />
rice Avery scored a one-yard touch-<lb />
down run with just over two minutes<lb />
remaining to seal the 24-21 win.<lb />
"When things get difficult<lb />
that's when its time to circle the<lb />
wagon, to bring everybody in<lb />
tighter together, and to form a<lb />
bond and a closeness Holtz said.<lb />
"The only way to get through it all<lb />
is to go out there on those practice<lb />
fields, work hard and to continue<lb />
to try and get better<lb />

ASSISTANT FEATURES EDITOR<lb />
On Saturday, when I realized<lb />
that one of my friends had planned on<lb />
dragging me, kicking and screaming<lb />
to an evening showing oiHollywood-<lb />
land, the thought of going to the<lb />
dentist suddenly looked like a pleas-<lb />
ant alternative. Spending a couple<lb />
hours of my precious time watching<lb />
Ben Affleck in what I assumed to be<lb />
yet another disappointment left me<lb />
feeling more than a bit anxious.<lb />
As everyone began piling into<lb />
the theater, I could tell that some<lb />
people were ecstatic to be there,<lb />
while others, like myself, were a bit<lb />
weary of the presentation on hand.<lb />
However, I have to say that by the<lb />
end of the movie I wasn't running for<lb />
the nearest exit, but rather savoring<lb />
the work.<lb />
Allen Coulter sparkles in his<lb />
directorial debut based on the life of<lb />
George Reeves (Affleck), the star of<lb />
television's original Superman, who<lb />
becomes caught up in Hollywood's<lb />
expectations and commits suicide, or<lb />
so everyone thinks at first.<lb />
When Reeves' mother begins to<lb />
question the circumstances behind<lb />
her son's death, she hires Louis<lb />
Simo (Adrian Brody) to investigate.<lb />
Simo slowly begins to unveil Reeves'<lb />
scandalous affair with Toni Mannix<lb />
(Diane Lane), the wife of Eddie<lb />
Manix (Bob Hoskins) an MGM<lb />
studio executive.<lb />
Throughout the movie, 1 was t<lb />
astonished to see the negative light<lb />
that Hollywood was portrayed in.<lb />
Often movies sugarcoat the truth<lb />
into a glamorous distortion of reality,<lb />
but 1 was pleased to see how Coulter<lb />
used the darker side of Holly wood to<lb />
depict more realistic characters.<lb />
One stale part of the movie that I<lb />
want to point out is that the plot gets<lb />
a bit confusing at times. While Simo<lb />
is investigating in the present, there<lb />
are flashbacks to Reeves' life and the<lb />
two worlds start to become confus-<lb />
ing and unravel almost completely.<lb />
Overall, I found that the actors<lb />
gave pretty remarkable perfor-<lb />
mances, with Affleck gaining back<lb />
Visitors to Australia Zoo lay flowers and notes of condolence at his shrine.<lb />

Lane stole the spotlight with their<lb />
intense portrayals of desperation<lb />
and secrecy.<lb />
Despite the confusing plot<lb />
twists, I found this movie to be<lb />
entertaining and intriguing. The<lb />
murdermystery genre that it<lb />
encompassed gave it some origi-<lb />

STAFF WRITER<lb />
Who can believe that only a<lb />
week and a half ago, the world<lb />
received the terrible news that<lb />
Steve Irwin, the Crocodile Hunter,<lb />
had died. For some, they believed it<lb />
was a joke or a rumor such as Will<lb />
Ferrell dying in a hang gliding<lb />
accident. Sadly, it was true as major<lb />
news outlets across the country<lb />
confirmed the death of Irwin from<lb />
cardiac arrest after he was attacked<lb />
by a sting ray.<lb />
Animal lovers and environ-<lb />
mentalists alike will miss the man<lb />
who made the phrases "Crikey<lb />
and "Isn't she a beauty?" part<lb />
of American pop culture and<lb />
daily conversation.<lb />
Irwin was born in 1962 in Aus-<lb />
tralia to parents Bob and Lyn, who<lb />
ran a wildlife park in Queensland.<lb />
Growing up around the Queensland<lb />
Reptile and Fauna Park, Irwin<lb />
developed his love for animals. At<lb />
the age of nine; he handled his first<lb />
crocodile and became a crocodile<lb />
trapper after graduating from high<lb />
school. Later, he became involved<lb />
with Queensland's government to<lb />
help with their Crocodile Relo-<lb />
cation Program that trans-<lb />
fers crocodiles to better loca-<lb />
tions as humanely as possible.<lb />
In 1991, the park was renamed<lb />
the Australian Zoo when it was<lb />
turned over to Irwin. Also in 1991,<lb />
he met Terri Raines, an American<lb />
naturalist, and they married the<lb />
next year. Together, they created<lb />
"The Crocodile Hunter which<lb />
aired on television in 1996.<lb />
As the series became more<lb />
and more popular, Irwin man-<lb />
aged to expand the franchise to<lb />
include the zoo, the television<lb />
series, the Steve Irwin Conservation<lb />
Foundation and the International<lb />
Crocodile Resdfc.<lb />
In addition to "The Crocodile<lb />

Tom Petty's CD an<lb />
introspective journey<lb />
Highway Companion<lb />
marks the new direction<lb />
of a legend's sound<lb />
LIZ FULTON<lb />
SENIOR WRITER<lb />
The old Heartbreaker is back<lb />
and his newest solo effort is a<lb />
welcome addition to his library of<lb />
music that has established itself<lb />
among the essentials of classic rock.<lb />
Tom Petty is amazing to say<lb />
the least. He bridges generation<lb />
gaps and allows for young and old<lb />
alike to enjoy his music and each<lb />
take something different from it.<lb />
I'll admit that I will always love the<lb />
old stuff, but the series of tracks<lb />
on Highway Companion symbolize<lb />
the strange journey of an offbeat<lb />
musician who has lived hard and<lb />
learned lessons along the way.<lb />
Highway Companion can be<lb />
described as Petty reaching<lb />
through his music to make the<lb />
listener experience and iden-<lb />
tify everything he feels. The<lb />
opening track, "Saving Grace<lb />
sets the tone for the rest of the<lb />
album, and its upbeat, infectious<lb />
groove prepares the listener for a<lb />
glimpse into a man's soul trapped<lb />
at a crossroads.<lb />
The whole album is really a<lb />
mini road trip into a place that<lb />
Petty wants us to see and feel.<lb />
"Down South" describes a<lb />
person who is traveling back home<lb />
and reaching out to his roots to<lb />
rediscover himself.<lb />
There are also deep themes of<lb />
love and loss that shine through<lb />
songs like "Flirting with Time"<lb />
and "Damaged by Love Even<lb />
though they have a sense of mel-<lb />
ancholy, these tracks also resonate<lb />
with honest-to-goodness rock and<lb />
roll that reminds you why you love<lb />
Tom Petty in the first place.<lb />
If you listen to Highway Com-<lb />
panidn from start to finish, it is<lb />
difficult to remember where one<lb />
song ends and the next begins.<lb />
Just like life, one chapter closes<lb />
and the next begins before you<lb />
register it happening. The flow<lb />
is part of what makes this album<lb />
so good and why every time<lb />
you listen to it, a new theme or<lb />
sound will be imprinted into your<lb />
mind. Highway Companion finds<lb />
Petty reuniting with old friends<lb />

LLOYD NEWMAN<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Hundreds gathered at Greenville<lb />
Town Commons Saturday, Sept. 9, to<lb />
celebrate music and community at<lb />
the first annual RiverRock Music<lb />
Festival. The free concert, expertly<lb />
organized by local consulting firm<lb />
The Axis of Stevil, featured eight<lb />
bands from the region ranging<lb />
from the inspired acoustic ballads of<lb />
Someone's Sister to the hard-rocking<lb />
headliners, Katharsis.<lb />
Emceeingtheaffairwaslocal mete-<lb />
orologist Skip Waters, who brought an<lb />
eagerness and humility that helped<lb />
solidify the attendees as a community<lb />
and expose the real winners of this<lb />
event, the Magnolia Arts Center, who<lb />
benefited from the proceeds.<lb />
Waters also moved things along<lb />
Ietween sets, hostinga good-hearted,<lb />
but often humorously pathetic Kara-<lb />
oke contest (RiverRoke) as well as a<lb />
chicken wing eating competition. OfF<lb />
stage, organizations and businesses<lb />
from all over the city set up tables<lb />
offering information on their cause<lb />
as well as a variety of freebies that<lb />
were continuously circulated around<lb />
the grounds throughout the day.<lb />
One of the most prominent<lb />
themes of the day was the support of<lb />
local music. In addition to the entire<lb />
lineup being from eastern North<lb />
Carolina, bands that were not invited<lb />
to play on stage were given the<lb />
opportunity to promote themselves<lb />
to the large group of attendees.<lb />
Multiple artists took advantage<lb />
by selling CDs, t-shirts and other<lb />
merchandise while celebrating the<lb />
underappreciated musical talent that<lb />
Greenville has to offer.<lb />
The lineup itself, however, had<lb />
been a point of concern from the<lb />
very beginning. Organizers had to<lb />
walk a fine line between a diverse<lb />
roster that could draw people for<lb />
a short time and a more thematic<lb />
one that could bring a smaller,<lb />
more dedicated group. They opted<lb />
for the former, and as a result, for<lb />
better or for worse, no two groups<lb />
were alike.<lb />
But watching kids as young as<lb />
three show the same enthusiasm for<lb />
the bluegrass trio Carolina Still as<lb />
they did the heavy metal band Black<lb />
Sky Radius, it became obvious that<lb />
to most of the attendees, this festival<lb />
was less about the music and more<lb />
about the opportunity for Greenville<lb />
citizens to spend the afternoon<lb />
among one another.<lb />
This was not a hip occasion, but<lb />
instead a wholesome and family-<lb />
friendly affair that provided great<lb />
fun to be had, even separate from<lb />
the live music.<lb />
With a great sense of charity and<lb />
community, and outstanding man-<lb />
agement, the RiverRock Festival<lb />
has the potential to one day become<lb />
a city-defining event.<lb />
With the success of the event<lb />
this year, there is sure to be another<lb />
RikerRock Festival next year. Be<lb />
sure to keep reading the East Caro-<lb />
linian for more information about<lb />
upcoming events.<lb />

Secret Machines latest effort a dud<lb />
BEN HARRIS<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
College has been a time of great music exploration<lb />
for me. Since I have been here, I've discovered many<lb />
different bands that dwell outside the mainstream.<lb />
Some of the bands I liked, some, not so much. So it's<lb />
no surprise that w hen I decided to do a CD review, I<lb />
desperately wanted to take a chance on a band that<lb />
I had never heard before in the hopes that I would<lb />
find something that would truly blow me away. Sadly,<lb />
Secret Machines took my hope, beat it into whimper-<lb />
ing submission and left it for dead on the bloodied<lb />
pavement of the parking lot outside my apartment.<lb />
Based in New York, Secret Machines is comprised<lb />
of bassistkeyboardistvocalist Brandon Curtis, his<lb />
brother, guitaristvocalist Ben Curtis and drummer<lb />
Josh Garza. The experimental trio was formed in<lb />
'2000 and released their first KP, in September '200-2<lb />
on the indie label Ace Fu records. They secured<lb />
a deal with Reprise in '2003 thanks largely to the<lb />
increasing buzz about their live shows. Since then,<lb />
the band has released one KP, The Road Leads H'here<lb />
it's Led, and two full-length studio albums. Now<lb />
Here is Nowhere and their latest, Ten Silver Drops.<lb />
 -<lb />
Ten Silver Drops, their sophomore effort, is the CD<lb />
I decided to bravely devote my time to reviewing. The<lb />
CD first caught my eye thanks to its cover. The bright<lb />
green and silver design stood out to me like piece<lb />
of coal in a snowdrift. The cover lured me in with<lb />
the promise of something good and refreshing that<lb />

10 DROPS<lb />

l<lb />
would satisfy my musical appetite<lb />
only to disappoint me in the end<lb />
with a plate full of garbage topped<lb />
with a dash of feces. How does<lb />
the cover designer sleep at night?<lb />
I knew from the first track,<lb />
"Alone, Jealous and Stoned that I<lb />
was in for thirty minutes of musi-<lb />
cal hell. The song opened with a<lb />
soft- guitar, which lead to a steady<lb />
psychedelic drumbeat. This sound<lb />
would permeate through seven of<lb />
the eight tracks on the album, seri-<lb />
ously limiting the musical variation<lb />
one would expect from a good<lb />
album; right from the beginning<lb />
of the song,<lb />
I noticed that the band had<lb />
several extremely different musical<lb />
influences including Dave Mat-<lb />
thews Band, Led Zeppelin, Pink<lb />
Floyd and even a hint of Nine Inch<lb />
Nails. To include Nine Inch Nails<lb />
in the list really doesn't make much<lb />
sense, but then neither does most of<lb />
the "music" on this time killer.<lb />
After "Alone, Jealous and<lb />
Stoned the CD took me through<lb />
the songs "All at Once" and "Light-<lb />
ning Blue Eyes The songs sounded<lb />
nearly identical to "Alone, Jealous<lb />
and Stoned again indicating the<lb />
extreme lack of musical variation<lb />
within the album. The fourth<lb />
track, the Pink Floydish "Daddy<lb />
in the Doldrums represents the<lb />
only bright spot on this otherwise<lb />
dark-as-death album. The track<lb />
relies heavily on synthesizers and<lb />
is decidedly different than anything<lb />
else on the album.<lb />
By the time I got to the seventh<lb />
track, "I Want to Know iftt's Still<lb />
Possible again basically the same<lb />
song as the first just with different<lb />
lyrics, I had completely given up on<lb />
the album and my brain, not want-<lb />
ing to take any more abuse, began<lb />
to cause me to fade in and out to the<lb />
point where I sometimes didn't even<lb />
realize the album was still playing.<lb />
Around this time I noticed<lb />
my eel, Mr. Slithers, had begun<lb />
to severely convulse in his tank.<lb />
Sadly, Mr. Slithers passed away that<lb />
night. Maybe he was the victim of<lb />
extremely dirty water, or maybe he<lb />
was the victim of his tendency to<lb />
IRWIN<lb />
continued from A5<lb />
in 1998, and she was named<lb />
after Steve's favorite animals.<lb />
Bindi is a saltwater crocodile,<lb />
and Sui was a Staffordshirre bull<lb />
terrier who died in June 2004.<lb />
Their second child, Robert Clar-<lb />
ence "Bob" Irwin, was born in 2003<lb />
and unknowingly became part of<lb />
controversy when Irwin held him in<lb />
his arms while feeding a crocodile.<lb />
Irwin became a media fixture<lb />
in the United States that resulted<lb />
in being parodied on shows such as<lb />
"South Park" and "The Simpsons<lb />
For a time, there was also a drink-<lb />
ing game that centered around<lb />
how often one of his famous catch<lb />
phrases were uttered in an episode<lb />
of "The Crocodile Hunter<lb />
He appeared in two films, one<lb />
as himself in Dr. Doolittle 3 and<lb />
starring in The Crocodile Hunter:<lb />
Collision Course. The film had Irwin<lb />
and his wife starring as themselves<lb />
and the humor that follows after<lb />
getting tangled up with the CIA.<lb />
In 2001 Irwin was awarded<lb />
the Centenary Medal for his "ser-<lb />
vice to global conservation and to<lb />
Australian tourism He also was<lb />
the Toutfsm Export of ihe Year for<lb />
Australia in 2004 and was- nomi-<lb />
nated for Australian of the Year.<lb />
Even regarding his own death,<lb />
Irwin displayed a sense of humor.<lb />
He once insisted, "My number one<lb />
rule is to keep that camera rolling.<lb />
Even if it's shaky or slightly out of<lb />
focus, I don't give a rip. Even if a<lb />

never eat, but I know Mr. Slithers<lb />
knows that he was the victim of<lb />
having to listen to a half hour of<lb />
horribly bad music.<lb />
His little eel-brain simply could<lb />
not take the horrible punishment<lb />
any longer. Rest in peace in the<lb />
land of endless ghost shrimp my<lb />
slimy friend. If there is one thing I<lb />
learned from listening to Ten Silver<lb />
Drops and subsequently doing the<lb />
review, it's that there is a reason<lb />
most bands aren't well known. That<lb />
is because they simply just aren't<lb />
good, enough for anyone to really<lb />
listen to or care about.<lb />
Sadly, Secret Machines has<lb />
soured me forever when it comes to<lb />
listening to new bands. The album<lb />
almost poisoned any faith I had in<lb />
music at all but thankfully, I had the<lb />
medicine, and as soon as I finally<lb />
finished listening to the album, I<lb />
promptly put in some Nirvana and<lb />
I knew everything was going to<lb />
be all right.<lb />

PETTY<lb />
continued from A5<lb />
guitar. Jeff Lynne plays bass and<lb />
really makes his presence known<lb />
on the song "Night Driver<lb />
Petty astoundingly plays<lb />
drums for the entire album,<lb />
and the three create a sense of<lb />
intimacy that keeps the album<lb />
refreshingly honest.<lb />
Like with any musician<lb />
that has been recording for 30<lb />
years, Petty has reached the<lb />
milestone where his music has<lb />
become richly autobiographical<lb />
and introspective.<lb />
It is amazing to chron-<lb />
