KIMBERLY BELLAMY<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Many students may give themselves<lb />
criminal records because they lack knowl-<lb />
edge about the recent changes in alcohol laws.<lb />
Peter Romary, attorney tor student legal<lb />
services, said that the changes will be effective as<lb />
of Dec. 1, and would like to make students aware<lb />
of these changes.<lb />
A night of partying and having fun will<lb />
become a little more technical to initiate if it<lb />
involves buying a keg.<lb />
According to Romary, in order to purchase a<lb />
keg, you must now obtain a permit for the indi-<lb />
vidual at the ABC store who is selling it to you.<lb />
The permit will include information such as your<lb />
name and address. This information will help the<lb />
authorities to hold you responsible if someone under-<lb />
age consumes alcohol or if someone drinks and drives.<lb />
Other major changes include possibly get-<lb />
ting a class three misdemeanor for consump-<lb />
tion of alcohol if you are an underage drinker.<lb />
"Previously, purchase and possession were<lb />
the main offenses and consumption alone was<lb />
not a crime; now it will be said Romary.<lb />
The DWI and consumption laws have been<lb />
toughened to make it easier for the state to<lb />
convict individuals for alcohol-related crimes.<lb />
It's also an effort for the state to dissolve the<lb />
prayer for judgment continued law, which is protected<lb />
for record<lb />
Students who aren't concerned with the changes in<lb />
alcohol laws and choose to drink and receive a drink-<lb />
ing ticket could be setting themselves up for longtime<lb />
disappointment if they choose to just pay it off.<lb />
Simply paying off the ticket will give you<lb />
a criminal record and you can also be put on<lb />
probation, and have difficulty getting accepted<lb />
in the graduate school or getting hired for a<lb />
job later on for continued alcohol offenses.<lb />
"Depending upon your age, possession of alco-<lb />
hol can be a more serious offense than posses-<lb />
sion of marijuana or assault in North Carolina<lb />
Romary said.<lb />
Ciera Burns, criminal justice major, said<lb />
that she was aware of the possibility of getting a<lb />
criminal record and went to a lawyer after getting<lb />
a drinking ticket.<lb />
These laws came about through the ere<lb />
at ion of Governor Easlcy's DWI Task<lb />
Force. The DWI and other alcohol<lb />
laws were studied and recommen-<lb />
dations were given to the General<lb />
Assembly.<lb />
The changes that were<lb />
brought about by the recom-<lb />
mendations were put into<lb />
House Bill 1048 and were<lb />
passed the last week of the<lb />
legislative session this year,<lb />
according to Romary.<lb />
Romary believes<lb />
that the revision to<lb />
the alcohol laws will<lb />
result in safer roads<lb />
and less violence<lb />
involving college<lb />
studentsandalcohol.<lb />
Individuals<lb />
who have drinking<lb />
tickets or who may<lb />
receive one should<lb />
visit Romary in<lb />
Mendenhall Student<lb />
Centerrcxim l'25orconsult<lb />
an attorney of their choice.<lb />
Students can find out more<lb />
about the alcohol law and other<lb />
legal issues by talking with<lb />
Romary or by attending one of<lb />
the seminars or classes of safety<lb />
and legal issues conducted by<lb />
Romary. For an appointment<lb />
with Romary, call 3'2KrlHS.<lb />
Other legal and safety<lb />
issues will be addressed in<lb />
upcoming issues of the East<lb />
Carolinian. You can submit<lb />
questions to the East Carolin-<lb />
ian or Romary concerning<lb />
general issues. Questions<lb />
that appear to be a concern<lb />
to a majority of the readers will be<lb />
addressed in an article similar to thisone.<lb />

Newman Center strives to teach<lb />
respect, responsibility to students<lb />
Downey becomes<lb />
'public face' of<lb />
Newman<lb />
BY VANESSA CLARKE<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
The Newman Catho-<lb />
lic Student Center is under<lb />
new management, in a way.<lb />
Over the past year, Rev.<lb />
Joseph Yaeger, or "Father Joe" as<lb />
everyone calls him, was respon-<lb />
sible for both the spiritual and<lb />
managerial duties at the center.<lb />
On July .s, however, Ryan<lb />
Downey, 2, who lives with his<lb />
wife in a house next door to<lb />
the center, took over the admin-<lb />
istrative side of Newman.<lb />
"I am the public face of the<lb />
Newman Center he said. "I handle<lb />
outreach to the campus, including<lb />
students, faculty and staff I'm<lb />
in charge of the overall direction<lb />
of the Newman Center, of what<lb />
we're doing and what we will do<lb />
Downey graduated from ECU<lb />
in '2002 with a BS in Communica-<lb />
tion, and became involved in the<lb />
Newman Center as a freshman. He<lb />
credits the center with "unlocking"<lb />
his faith. So when the opportunity<lb />
arose for him to work for the<lb />
center, he jumped at the chance.<lb />
"It occurs to me how impor-<lb />
tant this sort of thing is said<lb />
Downey. "It was just so important<lb />
for my identity coming through<lb />
here and for who I've become<lb />
Downey has an earnest desire<lb />
to help the center, evidenced by<lb />
the amount of work he puts into<lb />
it. He wants to build up campus<lb />
awareness of the Catholic center,<lb />
he said, and get it to the point<lb />
where they are running six or<lb />
seven Masses per week. He also<lb />
wants to "bring back the idea<lb />
of service to others he said.<lb />
He furthermore wants<lb />
to extend the Newman Cen-<lb />
ter's welcome to older stu-<lb />
dents, both non-traditional<lb />
and graduate students.<lb />
"I think one of the weaknesses<lb />
of campus ministries every-<lb />
where is that it becomes a youth<lb />
group for older kids, instead of<lb />
a mature group Downey said.<lb />
"A majority of the kids<lb />
involved are young. The only<lb />
older kids are the ones in charge<lb />
He wants to retain the<lb />
older students by offering them<lb />
opportunities they cannot get<lb />
elsewhere, such as a Bible study<lb />
for graduate students, help<lb />
with creating a resume and<lb />
job interviewing and how to<lb />
establish credit responsibly.<lb />
"We want to set people up<lb />
so they can go out in the world<lb />
and feel that not only did they<lb />
get their degree, not only did<lb />
they have a spiritually uplift-<lb />
ing experience because of their<lb />
involvement at the Newman<lb />
Center, but give them an experi-<lb />
ence that allows them to become<lb />
a stronger and more mature<lb />
person he said. "It helps with<lb />
the total education experience<lb />
His most ingenious idea,<lb />
though, is the creation of an<lb />
alumni association for the<lb />
Newman Center. He thought<lb />
of the idea as an undergradu-<lb />
ate while he was doing an<lb />

Student Pirate Club<lb />

Club looks to educate<lb />

of giving back<lb />
ELISA BIZZOTTO<lb />
STAFF WRITER.<lb />
With football season in full<lb />
swing, it's time tor Pirate fans who<lb />
have not already taken advantage<lb />
of the Student Pirate Club to hop<lb />
on board.<lb />
The SPC, which is a branch<lb />
of the ECU Pirate Club, enables<lb />
undergraduates as well as gradu-<lb />
ates who are enrolled as full-time<lb />
students to become a part of the<lb />
largest student organization at<lb />
ECU. The SPC focuses primarily<lb />
on closely involving its mem-<lb />
bers with the university athletic<lb />
programs and increasing their<lb />
excitement and support for their<lb />
fellow pirates. Moreover, the SPC<lb />
aims to educate its members on<lb />
the significance of giving back<lb />
to the program once they have<lb />
graduated.<lb />
Students pay a mere $30 a year<lb />
and receive a great deal of incen-<lb />
tives in return. If students join in<lb />
August or early September, they<lb />
receive access to all home football<lb />
game tickets before the season<lb />
starts, which place them at the<lb />
M)-yard line in Dowdy-Ficklen<lb />
Stadium. Members are also able to<lb />
obtain their tickets for men's home<lb />
basketball games one day before<lb />
non-members, which enables them<lb />
seating right along half court. In<lb />
addition, members maintain prior-<lb />
ity in purchasing away and bowl<lb />
game tickets.<lb />
Other advantages include<lb />
ECU athletic facility tours, access<lb />
to special SPC lookouts, tailgates<lb />
and other social events, a chance<lb />
to meet ECU coaches and players,<lb />
a IS month subscription to the<lb />
Pirates Chest monthly magazine,<lb />
which covers ECU athletics, and<lb />
an accumulation of priority points<lb />
that will benefit those who choose<lb />
to remain involved with the pro-<lb />
gram once they have graduated.<lb />
Seth ilorton, two-Tear SPC<lb />
president, takes pride in his<lb />
involvement with the club and<lb />
adds that one of the main focuses<lb />
is to ensure that students have<lb />
a great overall experience while<lb />
at ECU.<lb />
"School spirit is a huge part<lb />
of the college experience, and<lb />
it's something that I really enjoy<lb />
being a part of said Ilorton.<lb />
1 lotion highlights the tact that<lb />
members have access to closely<lb />
view what goes on within a Div i-<lb />
sion One program, lie maintains<lb />
that the excitement students<lb />
experience as SPC members may<lb />
persuade them to give back to the<lb />
club once they leave ECU.<lb />
Membership is available to<lb />
students year round, but those<lb />
who join sooner have access to<lb />
more games and events. This<lb />
year, the number of SPC" members<lb />
has already surpassed last year's<lb />

In the By the Numbers section<lb />
in the Sept. 7 edition, the first<lb />
figure stated that ECU's all-time<lb />
football record was 0-6. The<lb />
author neglected the fact that<lb />
ECU lost two bowl games, 28-<lb />
14 to TCU in the 1999 GMAC<lb />
Bowl and 64-61 to Marshall in<lb />
double overtime in the 2001<lb />
GMAC Bowl. ECU actually<lb />

GOP House candidates to end long<lb />

(AP) While most General<lb />
Assembly candidates are starting<lb />
to look toward the November elec-<lb />
tions, Stephen LaRoque and Willie<lb />
Ray Starling are still wrapped up<lb />
in a seven month primary battle<lb />
that should end with a special elec-<lb />
tion Tuesday.<lb />
The State Board of Elections<lb />
last month ordered a new elec-<lb />
tion in their 10th House District<lb />
after some voting irregularities<lb />
and some possible problems with<lb />
at least one new voting machine<lb />
during the May 2 primary election.<lb />
Starling, a retired federal<lb />
government worker from Wayne<lb />
County who lost to LaRoque<lb />
in 2004, was also campaigning<lb />
Monday, knocking on doors, even<lb />
at homes where LaRoque signs<lb />
are erected.<lb />
"I'm an eternal optimist Star-<lb />
ling said. "My message is getting<lb />

dents had gotten their internship<lb />
through their involvement with<lb />
the Greek organizations, which<lb />
have high alumni involvement.<lb />
For the students, having con-<lb />
tact with the alumni would allow<lb />
them to make networking con-<lb />
nections that could land them<lb />
internships or jobs in the future.<lb />
The alumni would benefit in ways<lb />
other than the obvious tax deduc-<lb />
tions. It is also a way for them to<lb />
network, to keep in contact with<lb />
people who may be able to help<lb />
them down the road, Downey said.<lb />
For the center itself, "It<lb />
extends the idea of commu-<lb />

"So many people leave campus<lb />
and never look back. It seems like<lb />
a waste to lose contact with all<lb />
these talented, wonderful people<lb />
It also allows the center to keep<lb />
in contact with former campus<lb />
ministers and those in leader-<lb />
ship positions at Newman. This,<lb />
according to Downey, would<lb />
allow the center to benefit from<lb />
the experience of others, with<lb />
regards to what has worked in<lb />
the past, as well as what has not.<lb />
The reason Downey wants<lb />
to put so much into the Newman<lb />
Center is that he feels so strongly<lb />
that it is an important part of campus<lb />
life for so many young Catholics.<lb />
"Something that I like about<lb />
the Newman Center is the idea<lb />
that it is really both a place<lb />
that can be a home away from<lb />
home for people and it's actu-<lb />
ally a structure, it's something<lb />
here, something tangible that you<lb />
can point to and say, 'That's the<lb />

"We hope that you will find<lb />
the Newman Center to be a place<lb />
where you can get to know other<lb />
students, practice your faith and<lb />
just relax between classes accord-<lb />
ing to the site. To that end, Newman<lb />
hosts free weekly Wednesday night<lb />
dinners directly following Mass.<lb />

At the drive through he<lb />

When she asked him to control<lb />

LEE SCHWARZ<lb />
STAFF WRITKR<lb />
Very rarely does someone start<lb />
a new career after the age of 50.<lb />
However, at UBS reaching the age<lb />
of 50 is almost becoming necessary<lb />
for hire, particularly in the Win-<lb />
ston-Salem UBS office where most<lb />
of the 11 financial advisors hired by<lb />
Patrick Crowley are at least 60.<lb />
The reasoning for this is simple.<lb />
As Crowley says, "We want advisers<lb />
who have been through, or are deal-<lb />
ing with, the same life experiences<lb />
as our clients. Those shared experi-<lb />
ences, whether saving for retirement,<lb />
paying for college or preparing to<lb />
transfer wealth to the next genera-<lb />
tion, can build up a relationship, and<lb />
ultimately trust, with a client<lb />
Richard Stuart, 56, had been<lb />
a financial systems development<lb />
manager for R.J. Reynolds Tobacco<lb />
Co. for about 30 years when the<lb />
company said in September '2003<lb />
that it was cutting its workforce to<lb />
reduce expenses. Stuart has found<lb />
that "being older has definitely<lb />
been an advantage because I've<lb />
found that people preparing for<lb />
retirement want to trust their<lb />
money to an adviser who will pro-<lb />
tect their investments<lb />
Marc Fusaro, an assistant eco-<lb />
nomic professor at ECU, said,<lb />
"For example, Edward Jones has a<lb />
preference for retired educators and<lb />
retired salesmen. And yes, part of<lb />
the reason is because customers are<lb />
more comfortable taking financial<lb />
advice from an older, potentially<lb />
wiser, face<lb />
There is a lot of enthusiasm with<lb />
corporate world veterans suddenly<lb />
becoming their own bosses after<lb />
yearsoftakingorders. The entrepre-<lb />
neurial aspect of financial advising<lb />
can be motivating to such veterans<lb />
such as Douglas Young, 50, a former<lb />
Reynolds executive who retired early<lb />
and came to UBS to start a new<lb />
career. Young said, "The chance to<lb />
work as my own boss within the<lb />
parameters of the local office was<lb />
too good to pass up<lb />
One of Crowley's younger<lb />
hires is Stephen .lumper, 43, who<lb />
has valuable advice for anyone<lb />
entering the job market. On stay-<lb />
ing employed and enjoying what<lb />
you do, he said, "This is the kind<lb />
of job where you can make your<lb />
own job security as you build<lb />
up your client base. Reinventing<lb />
yourself is the key to being gain-<lb />
fully employed in this job market.<lb />
But foremost, I want to enjoy what<lb />
I'm doing for a living<lb />
The idea of hiring persons who<lb />
are close to retirement age runs con-<lb />
trary to conventional industry thought<lb />
where the common way of doing<lb />
things is to hire the young in order to<lb />
cut costs as younger workers will more<lb />
than likely work for less money.<lb />
"Every day, our office is filled<lb />
with energy and enthusiasm<lb />
because of these advisers, They've<lb />
seized the opportunity to change<lb />
careers, and my goal is to continue<lb />
to find people just like them as our<lb />
office grows said Randy Wooden,<lb />
president of The Wooden Group<lb />
Inc a career-coaching company<lb />
based in Clemmons.<lb />
"I believe it is an exception<lb />
in a good way, and I wish other<lb />
companies would see the wisdom<lb />
in it; these people often have a<lb />
ready-made Rolodex of contacts<lb />
and potential clients from their<lb />
years in the corporate world. It's a<lb />
good second career field for many<lb />
of these professionals<lb />
As students prepare for careers<lb />
after graduation, the advice of an<lb />
older generation can be very<lb />
useful when one is trying to find<lb />
their niche in thejob market.<lb />

Not just for Pirate Rants <lb />
Stoplights just a little too long<lb />
Solution needed if I am<lb />
ever to arrive anywhere<lb />
on time<lb />
RYAN COBEY<lb />
OPINION WRITER<lb />
I'm a typical college stu-<lb />
dent. I tend to wake up 30<lb />
minutes before class, rush to<lb />
take a shower and find some<lb />
clothes that are actually clean<lb />
(that takes the most time). Four<lb />
months ago this worked fine<lb />
for me, but why have 1 already<lb />
been at least five minutes late<lb />
to most of my classes?<lb />
There is a very simple<lb />
answer to this, but there could<lb />
also be a less obvious one as<lb />
well. I don't live on campus<lb />
anymore. The five minute walk<lb />
from White Hall to Joyner East<lb />
was much easier than my cur-<lb />
rent drive down Charles Street<lb />
to the Minges parking lot. Fac-<lb />
toring in my ride on the bus,<lb />
the time spent traveling from<lb />
my residence to class would<lb />
equate to roughly 20 minutes.<lb />
The sad part is I only live about<lb />
three miles from campus.<lb />
It doesn't take a genius to<lb />
realize that something simply<lb />
isn't adding up here. This is<lb />
where the less obvious answer<lb />
to my previous question arises.<lb />
On my way to class I have<lb />
to stop at two lights, where<lb />
Charles Street intersects with<lb />
Ked Banks Koad and Greenville<lb />
Boulevard. And each and every<lb />
time I have arrived at them,<lb />
the inevitable red light stares<lb />
me back in the face for at least<lb />
five minutes.<lb />
Simply put, something<lb />
needs to be done about the<lb />
stoplights in Greenville. It is<lb />
a town that includes not only<lb />
many public schools, but a<lb />
university with over 20,000<lb />
students. If perhaps they were<lb />
better timed, many of us stu-<lb />
dents could plan at least with<lb />
a five minute leeway when<lb />
to leave the house every day.<lb />
Right now we can only attempt<lb />
to leave early and pray for the<lb />
impossible miracle of not sit-<lb />
ting at any one light for more<lb />
than two minutes.<lb />
Now don't get me wrong, I<lb />
highly enjoy living off-campus.<lb />
But I am also the type of person<lb />
that is never early; I'm sure<lb />
many of you know someone<lb />
out there like me. I know I will<lb />
have to rearrange my sleeping<lb />
schedule, that's what I buy 9<lb />
for, but when I'm sitting at<lb />
an intersection waiting for<lb />
the refreshing feeling of the<lb />
color green and see absolutely<lb />
nobody driving on the side<lb />
that gets to go, it makes me<lb />
think. And trust me, at the<lb />
intersection of Charles Street<lb />
and Greenville Boulevard, you<lb />
always get plenty of time to<lb />
think.<lb />
Is there not a way they<lb />
can time the lights around<lb />
town better? Are they even<lb />
timed at all? I've seen green<lb />
arrows last for two minutes<lb />
and there were maybe three<lb />
cars that were waiting to turn<lb />
left. During those two minutes<lb />
I also temporarily lost hearing<lb />
in my left ear due to the 12<lb />
inch sub woofer being used to<lb />
its maximum potential by the<lb />
guy beside me. The sad part<lb />
was that he had a kid in the<lb />
passenger seat.<lb />
A friend of mine spoke to<lb />
me about how her bus that<lb />
travels from North Campus<lb />
Crossing Apartments was 30<lb />
minutes late picking her up for<lb />
class one night.<lb />
The bus was supposed to<lb />
arrive at the apartments at 5:45<lb />
p.m. Instead it cruised in at<lb />
6:15 p.m. I asked her to explain<lb />
why that specific bus was so<lb />
late. She replied by first telling<lb />
me that it wasn't just this spe-<lb />
cific instance in which it was<lb />
late, and immediately pointed<lb />
the finger at one specific red<lb />
light at the intersection of<lb />
10th Street and Greenville<lb />
Boulevard.<lb />
If that's not proof enough<lb />
that something needs to be done<lb />
about this, my college Bible<lb />
study class on Sunday veered<lb />
totally off topic and began<lb />
arguing about the amount of<lb />
time they spent stopped at<lb />
specific intersections. One<lb />
person also mentioned that he<lb />
has never caught a green light<lb />
in the entire time he has lived<lb />
here.<lb />
I never realized how bad the<lb />
stoplights were in Greenville<lb />
until I began to live off-campus.<lb />
I guess when you are forced to<lb />
drive everywhere you start to<lb />
take notice. I can somewhat<lb />
understand the problem of so<lb />
many people crammed into one<lb />
small city, but I am originally<lb />
from New York and have never<lb />
had to sit at an intersection as<lb />
long as I have had to in this<lb />
town.<lb />
JUST ASK JANE<lb />
Dear Jane,<lb />
I'm freaking out here. School's only a<lb />
few weeks in and I'm so far behind in all<lb />
my work already. I'm a freshman and I don't<lb />
know if I should use my drops and get out<lb />
of my classes now or just see what happens<lb />
in my classes and grade replace them later<lb />
if I have to Please help!<lb />
Signed, V<lb />
Clueless and panicked<lb />
Dear Clueless and Panicked,<lb />
Things may not be as dire as you may<lb />
think. It is early enough in the semester that<lb />
in most classes you can save your grades<lb />
still. You're being panicked leads me to<lb />
believe that you are willing to work hard to<lb />
get yourself out of this situation. Get to your<lb />
professor's office immediately! No e-mails,<lb />
no phone calls - what you need is face time.<lb />
Tell them that you have royally screwed up<lb />
and are committed to doing whatever it takes<lb />
to right your wrongs. While some professors<lb />
won t budge, others will applaud you realiz-<lb />
ing the bad situation you've put yourself. Ask<lb />
for extra credit, tutoring and then commit<lb />
to not skipping class and actually preparing<lb />
for it. It may take some serious groveling<lb />
and some steep commitments, but not fail-<lb />
ing and hurting your GPA from the start<lb />
will be well worth it. If you have no chance<lb />
with your professor, then talk to your advi-<lb />
sor about a drop andgetting back on track<lb />
toward graduation. They'll oe able to look<lb />
at your situation more specifically and help<lb />
you out further. Don't worry about what they<lb />
think either, because believe me they've seen<lb />
it all. And remember, while sometimes col-<lb />
lege seems like more fun without the classes,<lb />
you are here for a reason, so don't forget it<lb />
as you move forward! Best of luck!<lb />
k<lb />
Dear Jane,<lb />
One of my best friends cheated on his<lb />
firlfriend and slept with someone else. He<lb />
oesn't want to tell her, but I'm friends with<lb />
her too and I think she has the right to<lb />
know. Do I say something and risk losing<lb />
his friendship, or do I let the girl stay in the<lb />
dark with my cheating friend?<lb />
Signed,<lb />
Between a friend and a hard place<lb />
Dear Between,<lb />
First, kudos to you for caring enough<lb />
about both your friend and his girlfriend<lb />
to put some thought into the situation<lb />
before acting on impulse. It's easy to want<lb />
to step in quickly without thinking about<lb />
the consequences. Friends (you and I are<lb />
no exceptions) often feel the need to fix<lb />
their friend's problems and there is no real<lb />
way to know how things will turn out if<lb />
ou step-in. I think your first step should<lb />
e talking to your friend. Obviously, the<lb />
honorable thing for him to do would be<lb />
to tell his girlfriend what he did, and that<lb />
would save you from having to get involved<lb />
further. Encourage him to be honest, face<lb />
the situation he created, and to come clean.<lb />
It amazes me how many people think they<lb />
can proceed in a relationship after screw-<lb />
ing up like this. If that approach doesn't<lb />
work and you still feel bad not telling the<lb />
girl what's happening, then I have just one<lb />
tiling to ask you - are you willing to lose<lb />
your friendship with the guy to save his<lb />
girlfriend? Worse yet, she may not even<lb />
care, or she may not "believe you. Talk about<lb />
an awkward situation then. So, while I'm<lb />
not telling you not to go to her, you have<lb />
to weigh the consequences that come with<lb />
doing so.<lb />
I<lb />
One word: Buzzkill<lb />
BENJAMIN CORMACK<lb />
OPINION WRITER<lb />
Benjamin Franklin once said that, "Beer is proof<lb />
that God loves us In the spirit of that act of love, the<lb />
beer industry has grossed billions of dollars every<lb />
year as people drink it down more and more. Of<lb />
course, when you consider the thousands of people<lb />
that get hurt or die because someone drinks too<lb />
much, or because they drink and then get behind the<lb />
wheel of a car it kind of ruins the party and makes<lb />
that keg look less inviting.<lb />
Right now, I imagine several of you are<lb />
going, "Oh no, not another don't drink and drive<lb />
speech and are now brushing me aside, call-<lb />
ing me various things and so on and so forth.<lb />
Well that's not exactly what I'm going for.<lb />
What I'm talking about is that very reaction.<lb />
People hear this message and some don't even bother<lb />
to really take it to heart. Why else do people continue<lb />
to die for the same reasons? Because no one wants<lb />
to hear the bad things about something they enjoy.<lb />
Along with beer, consider cigarettes and fast food; we<lb />
all know they're bad for us, but that doesn't stop us. It's<lb />
too much of a downer to think otherwise, and thus we<lb />
ignore the warnings and people continue to suffer and<lb />
die for the same reasons. That's why we continue to<lb />
see public service announcements, posters, pamphlets<lb />
and other pieces of information that remind us to not<lb />
do a lot of things we already know are bad for us.<lb />
I think Douglas Adams said it best:<lb />
"Human beings, almost unique in having the<lb />
ability to learn from the experience of others,<lb />
are remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so<lb />
For a society that has accepted Darwinism<lb />
enough, in most cases, to exclusively teach the theory<lb />
of evolution in public schools, we seem to do every-<lb />
thing we can to prevent the key point of it; natural<lb />
selection. Especially when it comes to those who<lb />
are less than intelligent; "stupid" as some might say.<lb />
Now when I say stupid, I mean stupid. Like Ein-<lb />
stein's parallel universe, bizarro twin stupid. The kind<lb />
of stupid where people get good ideas from reruns of<lb />
MTV's "Jackass The kind of stupid when you think<lb />
Newton's Third Law doesn't apply in the state you're in.<lb />
Have you ever read the warning labels on some<lb />
products? Chances are that label exists because<lb />
someone lacking in basic intelligence andor common<lb />
sense made a grievous error in judgment (had a dumb<lb />
idea) in which they were injured or killed (improved<lb />
the human gene pool and thus our species' chance<lb />
of survival). It's because of these people, some<lb />
worthy enough of what is colloquially known as the<lb />
Darwin Award, that companies are forced to print<lb />
ridiculous warnings on their products; the kind of<lb />
warnings about not doing things the average person<lb />
would probably not even conceive of doing in the<lb />
first place.<lb />
Unbelievable Warning Labels:<lb />
1. Hair dryer - Warning: Do not use while sleeping.<lb />
2. Iron - Warning: Never iron clothes on the body.<lb />
3. Vacuum cleaner - Do not use to pick up anything<lb />
that is currently burning.<lb />
4. Superhero costume cape - Warning: Cape does<lb />
not enable user to fly.<lb />
5. Pudding - Caution: Will be hot after heating.<lb />
6. Hair coloring - Do not use as an ice cream<lb />
topping.<lb />
7. Mattress - Warning: Do not attempt to swallow.<lb />
8. Swedish chain saw - Do not attempt to stop chain<lb />
with hands.<lb />
9. Matches - Caution: Contents may catch fire.<lb />
10. Toilet Plunger - Caution: Do not use near power<lb />
lines. (This one I don't think I want to know the<lb />
details.)<lb />
Here are some warning labels I found I just could<lb />
not believe. Keep in mind that each warning, caution,<lb />
and "do not" probably represents at least one person.<lb />
The bottom line is that if you're going to do<lb />
something questionably stupid, that's your right and<lb />
I honestly hope that you don't get hurt. Just leave<lb />
me out of it, because when you involve other people,<lb />
stupidity is no longer an excuse. I honestly think<lb />
that if more of us took greater care to consider how<lb />
our actions could affect others, this world would be<lb />
a better place. Everybody makes mistakes; just make<lb />
sure that yours don't end-up making you become<lb />
something that you really and truly aren't.<lb />
PIRATE RANTS<lb />

"Phil of the Future<lb />

cell phone had somehow<lb />
gotten turned on silent and<lb />
they got worried. Cut the<lb />

Pirate Rants should be<lb />

get someone to read the<lb />
Pirate Rants as a podcast.<lb />
That would be hilarious!<lb />
Hey ECU! Whatever<lb />
happened to my e-mails<lb />
every week about what's<lb />
going on around Campus<lb />
for the week? I get really<lb />
confused when I see them<lb />
setting up for an event that<lb />
I haven't heard about yet.<lb />
How do you expect more<lb />
people to go to them if<lb />
you don't tell anyone about<lb />
them?<lb />
If you are a writer for a<lb />
newspaper you should<lb />
probably learn AP Style. It<lb />
might help.<lb />
I subscribed to TEC podcast<lb />
via iTunes. I love it! Keep<lb />
'em coming!<lb />
I hate people that call you<lb />
and then are talking to<lb />
people where ever they are.<lb />
Why bother calling if you're<lb />
not gonna talk to me?!<lb />
Will the girl who said that<lb />
I am looking in the wrong<lb />
places for good girls direct<lb />
me in the right direction?<lb />
Why is it comfortable on<lb />
the first floor and freezing<lb />
on the second? Fleming's<lb />
temperature regulation<lb />
sucks!<lb />
It amazes me that these<lb />
same people that are<lb />
complaining about smoking<lb />
on campus and the "smoke<lb />
that gets in their hair" and<lb />
wishing that ECU would<lb />
become a non-smoking<lb />
campus are the same people<lb />
that pile into clubs on Friday<lb />
and Saturday nights who<lb />
do not mind the smoke as<lb />
long as they can drink and<lb />
party (meanwhile you come<lb />
out smelling like you've<lb />
been dunked in a beer and<lb />
cigarette bath). It's a free<lb />
country still, and making<lb />
this campus non-smoking<lb />
would only be limiting the<lb />
rights of tax-paying citizens<lb />
to light up and enjoya good<lb />
smoke when they want one!<lb />
The only cocktail I have<lb />
had lately is fruit juice and<lb />
cold medicine. At least I<lb />
am not the only one sick!<lb />
I hate how the guy at the<lb />
pizza place in Wright Place<lb />
gave me a small piece<lb />
when there was a big piece<lb />
sitting right next to it.<lb />
I hate how the smell of<lb />
fresh doughnuts wafts over<lb />
to the Rec when I am going<lb />
to work out.<lb />
Why is it that some days<lb />
the fountain at Joyner<lb />
Sonic Plaza will be on and<lb />
sometimes when it will be<lb />
off? It makes me sad when<lb />
it is off. It also makes me<lb />
sad when it is moldy.<lb />
Why is it that bottled water,<lb />
the most abundant resource<lb />
on Earth, cost me a dollar?<lb />
Is it just me, or were there a<lb />
lot of cops on campus today?<lb />
I hate when computers freeze!<lb />
To the girl on the bus who<lb />
has an oversized purse - it's<lb />
fine if you want to carry it,<lb />
but if the bus is full and<lb />
people are standing, kindly<lb />
move your purse so they<lb />
can sit down. I promise you<lb />
it does not need a seat of<lb />
its own.<lb />
I've skipped one of my<lb />
classes every day since the<lb />
first week, and yet I just<lb />
made an A on the first test<lb />
and the class average was a<lb />
C. You got to love that.<lb />
Why does the sports section<lb />
only cover football? Doesn't<lb />
the editor know there are<lb />
other sports too. Some of<lb />
our other teams actually<lb />
win too.<lb />
My French teacher doesn't<lb />
teach me anything. Why do I<lb />
even bother going to class?<lb />
I'm going to start towing all<lb />
the people who park in my<lb />
spot. Watch out!<lb />
I slept with my roommate's<lb />
boyfriend again.<lb />
My favorite thing about<lb />
pledging a sorority is being<lb />
able to drink downtown and<lb />
at socials without having to<lb />
get a fake ID.<lb />
Does anyone else have any<lb />
e-mails that are just too long<lb />
so they don't read them?<lb />
I know it sounds lazy, but<lb />
shorten things up for me<lb />
please!<lb />
I'm lost.<lb />

Rating popular ratemyprofessor.com<lb />
Is this site friend or foe?<lb />
SHANNON DAVIS<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Ratemyprofessor.com is an<lb />
outlet where students can go to<lb />
both praise their instructors and<lb />
encourage others to be in their<lb />
classes or warn future students<lb />
of the instructors they deem to<lb />
be unfit.<lb />
These opinions are normally<lb />
anonymous and tend to be geared<lb />
toward a personal experience.<lb />
There is even an option to rate a<lb />
professor as "hot" with the use of<lb />
a chili pepper.<lb />
The three main criteria a pro-<lb />
fessor is graded on are ease of the<lb />
class, helpfulness and clarity. Ease<lb />
is debatable because an easy pro-<lb />
fessor may not mean that the pro-<lb />
fessor is good. Sometimes the chal-<lb />
lenging professors provide a more<lb />
enriching classroom experience.<lb />
When asked about her opinion<lb />
of the Web site, junior Courtney<lb />
Smith, a broadcast journalism major,<lb />
said, "I do like the site, but 1 don't<lb />
make all of my class choices based<lb />
on it because the teacher may have<lb />
made one person mad for any reason<lb />
that didn't affect the rest of the class.<lb />
It gives you a good idea about the<lb />
professor but not the whole pic-<lb />
ture. I would never base my entire<lb />
choice of a class just on the site<lb />
James Rees, a professor in the<lb />
School of Communication, had a<lb />
lot to say about the Web site.<lb />
"I look at it. I've looked at<lb />
my own ratings. I don't think it<lb />
is as accurate as the University's<lb />
Student Opinion Survey, which is<lb />
Student Beth Barton talking to her instructor Robert Quinn about an assignment. In situations like this it doesn't much matter what the site had to say.<lb />
a real questionnaire. It is not as<lb />
comprehensive as the University<lb />
administered survey. I'd call the<lb />
Web site a snapshot. Not enough<lb />
students participate so there is<lb />
not enough statistical validity for<lb />
the site. The sample is too small.<lb />
I have looked at myself and other<lb />
people I work with. In a number<lb />
of cases, I think it has been accu-<lb />
rate but is still not statistically<lb />
valid For the record, Professor<lb />
Rees has a yellow smiley rating<lb />
on the site.<lb />

SENIOR WRITER<lb />
It is another school night and<lb />
another night with no option but<lb />
to eat take-out for dinner. Not so,<lb />
mi amigos. Instead of ordering<lb />
a number four from McDonald's<lb />
yet again, cruise down to Harris<lb />
Teeter and load up the cart with<lb />
simple ingredients to spice up<lb />
dinner and keep your stomach<lb />
from eating itself.<lb />
Ground beef, chicken breasts<lb />
and pasta are staples that can<lb />
be cooked several different ways<lb />
and still be delicious and nutri-<lb />
tious. Selecting different season-<lb />
ings and sauces will have you<lb />
eating quesadillas one night and<lb />
shepherd's pie the next. Also, for<lb />
those worried about carbohy-<lb />
drates with pasta, there is organic<lb />
macaroni and cheese and whole-<lb />
wheat pasta readily available.<lb />
Cooking should never be con-<lb />
strued as a chore, but rather an<lb />
art form to be enjoyed as much as<lb />
the actual eating. Presentation and<lb />
ambience are 60 percent of what<lb />
makes food enjoyable and will<lb />
have you less likely reaching for<lb />
unhealthy snacks two hours later.<lb />
First and foremost, cooking<lb />
should always be accompanied<lb />
by music. Some enjoy playing<lb />
music that goes along with the<lb />
culture of the food. For example,<lb />
Ricky Martin would be an apt<lb />
choice while making tacos, or<lb />
play ABBA to complement the<lb />
preparation of Swedish meatballs.<lb />
Personally, I enjoy Italian mafia<lb />
music (Dean Martin, Louis Prima,<lb />
etc.) while I'm cooking, but it is<lb />
whatever keeps you happy cook-<lb />

the late-night delivery of Wings<lb />

If at all possible, try to cook for<lb />

people you love. This will also per-<lb />
suade you to be more adventurous<lb />
with your cooking and to prepare<lb />
for the all too imminent future of<lb />
cooking for a family of your own.<lb />
The following are some reci-<lb />
pes easy to follow and delicious to<lb />
consume. As you become skilled at<lb />
these, try to expand your culinary<lb />
skills to more exotic dishes and<lb />
wonder why you ever thought fast<lb />
food was a good idea.<lb />
Many professors who have<lb />
poor quality ratings are only<lb />
scored by two or three students,<lb />
which could mislead other stu-<lb />
dents. It looks good when the<lb />
bright, happy smiley face symbol-<lb />
izing a good quality professor is<lb />
next to a name, but there could be<lb />
just one rating for that professor.<lb />
An extremely small percentage<lb />
of people actually leave comments<lb />
on this Web site compared to how<lb />
many people attend a school. ECU<lb />
has over 20,000 students. There<lb />
are definitely not 20,000 com-<lb />
ments on the Web site.<lb />
Some comments have nothing<lb />
to do with an instructor's ability to<lb />
teach. In one instance, a teacher's<lb />
cleavage is commented about,<lb />
which should have no relevance to<lb />
her skills as a teacher.<lb />
Brendan Long, senior media<lb />
production major, says that he has<lb />
used the Web site.<lb />
"I use it to just get an idea.<lb />
Some comments, though, aren't<lb />
reliable. If a teacher has a low-<lb />
rating from every student, then<lb />
it is probably right; otherwise I<lb />
don't think it is always accurate<lb />
she says.<lb />
If you take the time to post a<lb />
comment, people will take the time<lb />
to read them. This Web site should<lb />
not be the only factor considered<lb />
when a student signs up for a class,<lb />
but it is helpful when forming ideas<lb />
about a professor.<lb />

A staple of fashion that<lb />
will outlast us all<lb />
LIZ FULTON<lb />
SENIOR WRITER<lb />
Fashion, it seems will always<lb />
come in cycles. The go-go fashion<lb />
of the 1960s made an appearance<lb />
in the mid 1990s, as did the relaxed<lb />
1970s attitude recently. Even if<lb />
a mass trend explosion does not<lb />
occur, designers also have bor-<lb />
rowed certain key elements such<lb />
as the usage of lace from the Vic-<lb />
torian era or the re-creation of the<lb />
1950s cocktail dress.<lb />
There is one fashion style that<lb />
refuses to be locked into one era<lb />
or fall prey to the hot trends of the<lb />
day. Although many cite the preppy<lb />
style at the beginning of the 1980s,<lb />
it actually had its roots in the<lb />
pre-Vietnam days of the 1960s.<lb />
The prep look stemmed from<lb />
the dress code of New England prep<lb />
schools. The navy blazer, white<lb />
oxford, khaki pants and loafers are<lb />
still the staples of men at church<lb />
services and semi-casual weddings.<lb />
The prep look, unlike many<lb />
other styles is not only a choice in<lb />
dress but also an attitude. Preps<lb />
dislike anything ostentatious and<lb />
have a high regard for tradition.<lb />
Such feelings reflect in their<lb />
core labels of choice. True preps<lb />
all sport Lacoste, Ralph Lauren,<lb />
Vineyard Vines, J. Crew, Brooks<lb />
Brothers, Lilly Pullitzer and to<lb />
some extent L.L. Bean and Moun-<lb />
tain Hardware.<lb />
The important thing to remem-<lb />
ber is that those true to the prep<lb />
style do not openly flaunt their<lb />
labels. While having a gator or<lb />
a man on a horse on your shirt is<lb />
acceptable, try to keep logos to a<lb />
minimum. Like recognizes like and<lb />
The classic prepster, Kristin Cavallari from Laguna Beach poses for a<lb />
photo backstage at the Lacoste show during Fashion Week in New York.<lb />
other preps will recognize your<lb />
clothes simply by its cut or print.<lb />
On a quick note, to all of<lb />
those who believe that American<lb />
Eagle and Abercrombie & Fitch<lb />
epitomize the prep stature, you are<lb />
sadly wrong and need to immedi-<lb />
ately consult The Preppy Handbook.<lb />
The key elements to a prep's<lb />
wardrobe begins with the polo.<lb />
It is the perfect shirt. No matter<lb />
if you woke up late for school or<lb />
spent too much time on the tennis<lb />
court, throwing on a freshly<lb />
pressed, solid color polo adds 15<lb />
points to your appearance.<lb />

Getting that important internship<lb />
A gateway into the real<lb />

SHANNON DAVIS<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
No matter what your major is,<lb />
an internship will always help you.<lb />
Although not all majors require an<lb />
internship to graduate, they are<lb />
still strongly advised to gain expe-<lb />
rience into the working world.<lb />
After graduation, thousands of<lb />
people flock into the work world<lb />
looking for a job by sending out<lb />
an enormous number of applica-<lb />
tions. If a connection were already<lb />
established between a company<lb />
and a specific person, then the first<lb />
step into the real world would not<lb />
be as difficult.<lb />
Internships are vital for net-<lb />
working and building a resume.<lb />
Grades are not always the key<lb />
to finding a job. Of course, it is<lb />
A law intern enjoys his view while gaining that all important work experience<lb />
important to do well in school, but to be taken seriously if they have<lb />
employers want to see how much<lb />
you know and can do for their<lb />
company rather than how much<lb />
you can regurgitate and copy<lb />
down information onto an exam.<lb />

When it comes to<lb />
getting a job, it's a<lb />
tough world out there<lb />
SARAH CAMPBELL<lb />
ASSISTANT FEATURES EDITOR<lb />
Let me draw out the sce-<lb />
nario for you: You've just gradu-<lb />
ated from ECU after years of<lb />
working hard and, go ahead<lb />
and admit it, playing hard. You<lb />
are typing up your resume and<lb />
notice that it is a bit sparse.<lb />
You haven't joined any campus<lb />
organizations or teams, had a job<lb />
or done any volunteer work. Does<lb />
this sound like you in a couple of<lb />
years or maybe mere months?<lb />
If so, the employer of your<lb />
dreams won't be impressed that<lb />
you didn't take the opportunity<lb />
to get involved in the campus<lb />
community. Often employers<lb />
look for well-rounded people<lb />
who have accomplished not only<lb />
success in their academic life, but<lb />
in their personal lives as well.<lb />
I'll start with the most obvious<lb />
ways to add to depth to your resume.<lb />
One of the first things college<lb />
students should do is attempt to<lb />
join some type of organization<lb />
or club. Not only will you have a<lb />
chance to experience new things,<lb />
you can be part of a group that<lb />
interests and educates you.<lb />
Also, by being part of a campus<lb />
organization, you gain count-<lb />
less ways to network Through<lb />
networking you gain valuable<lb />
contacts that may be the link in<lb />
helping you get a job or internship<lb />
while you are still in school.<lb />
The next step is landing an<lb />
internship. There is no doubt<lb />
about it that internships open<lb />
up a number of doors that would<lb />
otherwise be out of reach by a<lb />
regular student.<lb />
Internships provide experi-<lb />
ence in your chosen field, and you<lb />
could even land a job if you go in<lb />
there and give it all you've got.<lb />
One of the most important<lb />
things for students to add to<lb />
their resume is job experience. It<lb />
doesn't matter if the job is in your<lb />
field or not, but just getting the<lb />
experience puts you one step ahead<lb />
of other potential candidates.<lb />
Landing and keeping a job for<lb />
a number of years will also give<lb />
you many valuable references.<lb />
Another great way to give<lb />
your resume an extra kick is<lb />
through volunteer work. Your<lb />
commitment to helping others<lb />
will not only score you tons of<lb />
points with an employer, but you<lb />
will also reap many personal<lb />
benefits.<lb />
No matter what you do to beef<lb />
up your resume, every little bit<lb />
counts. Remember that the earlier<lb />
you start, the better off you will<lb />
be in the long run. Don't wait<lb />
until a month before you graduate<lb />
to decide to get involved in your<lb />
career goals, get started today.<lb />

Other prep fashion staples<lb />
include a pair of Sperry Topsid-<lb />
ers, croakies for your sunglasses<lb />
and a limited amount of denim.<lb />
The denim question is debatable<lb />
among some sets but when it<lb />
comes between linen pants and<lb />
blue jeans, the linen is clearly the<lb />
more acceptable choice. It is also<lb />
important for men to have a vari-<lb />
ety of bow ties while ladies enjoy<lb />
a wide array of head scarves and<lb />
head bands.<lb />
There are also certain prints<lb />
that are necessary and much loved<lb />
by the preppy nation. Seersucker,<lb />
preferably in blue, makes great<lb />
suits for men. The ladies are able<lb />
to change up their seersucker<lb />
colors by choosing between pink<lb />
and green also.<lb />
Madras has thankfully<lb />
returned and looks best in the<lb />
form of shorts or skirts. At present<lb />
the darker colored madras is the<lb />
right choice as the pastel madras<lb />
screams 40-year-old mom.<lb />
Argyle is a print that, like<lb />
moonshine, should be enjoyed in<lb />
moderation. Do wear the argyle<lb />
sweater or sweater vest. Do not<lb />
wear the sweater with a match-<lb />
ing bag and head scarf. It is also<lb />
a sweet little tease to wear solely<lb />
argyle socks that peak out only<lb />
when you sit down.<lb />
There are so many more<lb />
nuances that are included in the<lb />
preppy lifestyle. The clothes are<lb />
simply the tell-tale clues that the<lb />
person you are sitting next to in<lb />
English 1200 has probably worn<lb />
this exact style since birth.<lb />
Some who dislike this classic<lb />
style often have the gall to call<lb />
preps a bunch of sheep who all<lb />
dress the same. I believe these<lb />
naysayers are just confused. Preps<lb />
are wearing what they like and<lb />
ignoring what the fashion maga-<lb />
zines are telling them to wear. I<lb />
salute you all for never having to<lb />
update your closet.<lb />

Many times if the employer<lb />
is impressed with an intern, that<lb />
intern is guaranteed a job with<lb />
that company after graduation.<lb />
At times, some tasks performed<lb />
by interns may seem menial, but<lb />
if the small responsibilities are<lb />
not tackled, then the larger tasks<lb />
cannot be done.<lb />
The job market is extremely<lb />
competitive as more people are<lb />
graduating from college and<lb />
more jobs are being transferred<lb />
overseas for cheaper labor. The<lb />
standard of living is much higher<lb />
now than in the past. People are<lb />
expected to attend college, earn<lb />
a degree and make a respectable<lb />
living. Trade schools are becom-<lb />
ing less popular and small town<lb />
businesses are disappearing.<lb />
The working world is a cut-<lb />
throat environment of the expe-<lb />
rienced workforce trying to keep<lb />
their jobs and young hopefuls look-<lb />
ing for a big break. An internship<lb />
helps in the transition between<lb />
being a carefree college student<lb />
to a bill-paying, working adult.<lb />

When Davon Drew came out of New<lb />
Bern High School, he was considered one<lb />
of the top quarterback prospects in the<lb />
state and recruiting analyst Tom Lemming<lb />
had him ranked in the top 25 nationally.<lb />
He led the Bears to consecutive state<lb />
championship games, falling to current<lb />
Florida Gator Chris Leak and Charlotte<lb />
Independence High School both times.<lb />
When it came time to choose a college,<lb />
Drew chose to stay close to<lb />
home and attend ECU.<lb />
A two-sport star<lb />
at New Bern, Drew's<lb />
athleticism has never<lb />
been a question<lb />
and, with a<lb />
30-3 record<lb />
as a start-<lb />
ing quar-<lb />
terback<lb />
in high<lb />
school, nei-<lb />
ther was his<lb />
maturity. Drew was named North Carolina<lb />
Athlete of the Year as a high school senior.<lb />
"The biggest thing is that he's pretty<lb />
athletic said Chip Williams, Drew's high<lb />
school coach. "Davon was a Shrine Bowl<lb />
quarterback and the team elected him cap-<lb />
tain. He's got that leadership ability and a<lb />
good work ethic. I know he may he a little<lb />
undersized for a college tight end, but I'm<lb />
sure he can put on more weight and get<lb />
stronger<lb />
Drefo arrived on campus with classmate<lb />
Patrick Pinkney after being recruited by<lb />
then, head coach John Thompson. Both<lb />
impressed the coaching staff, but<lb />
with Desmond Robinson already<lb />
serving as a backup, Drew<lb />
and Patrick Pinkney were<lb />
redshirted.<lb />
Upon Holtz's arrival,<lb />
Drew was immediately<lb />
thrown.in the spotlight<lb />
with James Pinkney<lb />
taking an academic<lb />
hiatus. Drew earned the<lb />
No. 1 spot under center<lb />
coming out of the spring,<lb />
but with Pinkney return-<lb />
ing and two Holtz recruits<lb />
arriving, the position was log<lb />
jammed. Pinkney earned a spot<lb />
on the travel roster in 2005.<lb />
He did not see any playing<lb />
time, as James<lb />
Pinkney turned<lb />
in an outstand-<lb />
ing season<lb />
without miss-<lb />
ing any games<lb />
under center.<lb />
Holtz<lb />
briefly sus-<lb />

who was report-<lb />
edly late for a<lb />
curfew. He then<lb />
was taken off<lb />
the travel roster<lb />
and forced<lb />
to grow up g<lb />
quickly. Holtz -I<lb />
assessed the -S<lb />
situation at the <lb />
end of the fall 8<lb />
and approached <lb />
Drew about<lb />
changing posi-<lb />

Holtz talked to Drew, who kept adding<lb />
weight to his 6-foot-4 frame, in the off-<lb />
season about a possible position change.<lb />
The Pirates had a need at tight end, and<lb />
Drew added 30 pounds of muscle between<lb />
the 2005 and 2006 seasons. The move has<lb />
paid off.<lb />
"I cannot say enough positive things<lb />
about Davon Drew said Holtz. "The<lb />
adjustments he's made. We knew he was<lb />
big, but he's over 250 pounds now and<lb />
he has a chance to make an immediate<lb />
impact<lb />
That impact is already being felt. Drew<lb />
led all receivers in the 2006 Purple-Gold<lb />
Spring Game with four catches for 26 yards<lb />
and a nine-yard score from Pinkney. The<lb />
redshirt sophomore caught the first offi-<lb />
cial pass of his career at Navy, a 23-yard<lb />
completion that led to a Pirate touchdown,<lb />
and against UAB Saturday, he had six<lb />
catches for 51 yards and the lone ECU<lb />
touchdown.<lb />
"It's a big change, but Coach Holtz<lb />
told me that I'd have a lot of advantages<lb />
with my speed Drew said of the switch.<lb />
A criticism the new ECU coaching<lb />
staff received in 2005 was they did not<lb />
throw enough to the tight end. With seven<lb />
catches in two games, Drew has done his<lb />
part to silence some of those critics.<lb />
"I've said all along how impressed I've<lb />
been with Davon's athleticism Holtz said.<lb />
"What he gives us is another inside threat<lb />
and 1 think that's emerged in the first two<lb />
games<lb />
Drew has replaced junior Jay Sonnhal-<lb />
teras the starting tight end because of his<lb />
athleticism and receivers coach Donnie<lb />
Kirkpatrick said Drew's experience at<lb />
quarterback has assisted in his transition<lb />
"He just gives you the ability of a guy<lb />
that has played quarterback, so he under-<lb />
stands coverage Kirkpatrick said. "He<lb />
understands defenders and kind of knows<lb />
how to get them on his back and fake them<lb />
out. He's athletic, he was a running-type<lb />
quarterback, so when he gets the ball in his<lb />
hands, he's got some skills. He hasn't really<lb />
had a chance to show that yet, but I think<lb />
that's the next part to come<lb />
The 20-year-old recreation manage-<lb />
ment major still has a learning curve as a<lb />
blocker, but Holtz said that is something<lb />
that he has talked to Drew about.<lb />
"Davon is playing really well in the<lb />
passing game, but he needs to continue<lb />
to develop as a blocker Holtz said. "He's<lb />
got to become a complete tight end. I<lb />
think Davon's got to continue to develop<lb />
his blocking skills, but I think he really<lb />
is creating a great, athletic mismatch<lb />
from a linebacker standpoint. He's got the<lb />
capability to become a lot better than he<lb />
is right now<lb />
Drew knows what he needs to work<lb />
on.<lb />
"I'm starting to get better, but I even<lb />
notice myself sometimes, I make mistakes<lb />
on blocking Drew said. "It's just little<lb />
things that I need to pick up on<lb />

Amato needs<lb />
to pipe down<lb />
N.C. State coach<lb />
needs to worry about<lb />
keeping job, not partial<lb />
qualifiers<lb />
ERIC GILMORE<lb />
SPORTS EDITOR<lb />
Chuck Amato doesn't have a<lb />
quiet bone in his pectoral domi-<lb />
nated body. Now with his job in<lb />
serious jeopardy following an<lb />
embarrassing home loss to Akron,<lb />
Amato more than ever, needs to<lb />
hush. Yet for some reason, he just<lb />
can't.<lb />
When asked by a reporter at<lb />
his weekly news conference on<lb />
Monday, Amato embarrassed<lb />
himself even more than Saturday's<lb />
20-17 loss. Instead of focusing on<lb />
improvements, Amato provided a<lb />
half-hearted excuse. He took a pot<lb />
shot at Akron's ability to admit<lb />
partial qualifiers.<lb />
"They're in a conference that<lb />
allows non-qualifiers in school<lb />
Amato said. "Non-qualifiers. Do<lb />
ya'll need to look that one up to<lb />
write your stories? Do you know<lb />
what kind of players non-qualifiers<lb />
are, usually? They're inversely<lb />
proportional to what their grade-<lb />
point average is. They can make a<lb />
big difference<lb />
Chuck, just shut up baby.<lb />
Oh dear chest, has your<lb />
memory failed you? Two years<lb />
ago, an N.C. State team full of<lb />
full qualifiers embarrassed a John<lb />
Thompson led ECU squad full of<lb />
partial qualifiers 52-14. Keep in<lb />
mind that partial qualifiers have<lb />
to sit out for a mandated period of<lb />
time before they can be allowed to<lb />
compete in NCAA competition.<lb />
According to the News &<lb />
Observer, Akron athletics spokes-<lb />
woman Melanie Schneider con-<lb />
firmed Monday that the Mid-<lb />
American Conference allows<lb />
schools to bring in athletes who<lb />
do not qualify academically under<lb />
NCAA rules for freshman eligibil-<lb />
ity. Schneider said Akron had three<lb />
nonqualifiers in the program last<lb />
season and has one on the roster<lb />
this season.<lb />
ECU has approximately seven<lb />
players on its roster that were<lb />
partial qualifiers. Current cap-<lb />
tain and starting defensive end<lb />
Shauntae Hunt was brought in as<lb />
a partial qualifier, but with hard<lb />
work in the classroom is on pace<lb />
to graduate.<lb />
What is wild is that Amato<lb />
wants to deflect the blame of losing<lb />
to an inferior team on the last play<lb />
of the game towards recruiting.<lb />
Aniato's flamboyant persona has<lb />
achieved him national status yet he<lb />
is arguing that Akron has recruit-<lb />
ing advantages. Ten days out of .g<lb />
ten, N.C. State will beat Akron for <lb />
a blue chip recruit. &<lb />
Want to talk about advan- <lb />
tages? How abdut playing in the <lb />
ACC for one? Having regional <lb />
and national exposure surely out-<lb />
weighs any recruiting advantage<lb />
that lowly Akron or even mighty<lb />
ECU has. How about the publicity<lb />
that current NFL players Philip<lb />
Rivers and Mario Williams have<lb />
brought to your program.<lb />
Apparently David Garrard's<lb />
fourth round selection and backup<lb />
status outweighs the fact that Wil-<lb />
liams was the No. 1 pick overall<lb />
over Heisman Trophy winner<lb />
Reggie Bush. C'mon. Quit whin-<lb />
ing.<lb />
Did you, Mr. Amato forget<lb />
about the yearly monopoly known<lb />
as the Bowl Championship Series?<lb />
Because like your cheerleaders,<lb />
who reportedly didn't know how<lb />
to pronounce Akron or where it's<lb />

ROBERT MATTHEW PARKS<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
The Lady Pirates volleyball<lb />
team prevailed against lowly UNC<lb />
Wilmington last night, but not<lb />
before having to fight through the<lb />
second game and the early stages<lb />
of the third. Despite a record of<lb />
5-4 after last night's defeat, the<lb />
Seahawks are ranked near the<lb />
bottom nationally. The Lady<lb />
Pirates are now 4-3 on the season.<lb />
Outside hitter Kelly Wernert<lb />
sealed a Pirate victory in the third<lb />
game, with an authoritative kill<lb />
in the third game that made the<lb />
score 27-18, The Lady Pirates did<lb />
not allow the Seahawks to score<lb />
again. The final score saw the<lb />
Lady Pirates on top 30-14, 30-25,<lb />
and 30-18<lb />
The Lady Pirates, led by co-<lb />
captain setter Heidi Krug who<lb />
logged 37 assists, had their way<lb />
with the Seahawks in the first<lb />
game, taking only 15 minutes to<lb />
take the 1-0 lead.<lb />
The second game saw the<lb />
Seahawks fight back point for<lb />
point as The Lady Pirates strug-<lb />
gled to gain any kind of lead until<lb />
the game was tied at 25-25, when<lb />
they were able to finally break<lb />
free. Led by Wernert's 13 kills,<lb />
the Lady Pirates were able to shut<lb />
down the Seahawks once and for<lb />
all in the third game.<lb />

Holtz talks with media<lb />
Skip Holtz answers questions during his weekly press conference.<lb />
(ECU SI D) ECU head foot-<lb />
ball coach Skip Holtz addressed<lb />
members of the media prior to<lb />
this week's game against Mem-<lb />
phis. The following are selected<lb />
comments:<lb />
On UAB Game: "It was a<lb />
very disappointing way to lose,<lb />
especially when you go back and<lb />
watch the film. It was difficult<lb />
because I thought our players<lb />
competed extremely hard and I<lb />
thought they played extremely<lb />
hard. I was really proud of a<lb />
lot of positive things from an<lb />
intangible standpoint because of<lb />
the way they stayed together, the<lb />
way they competed and how hard<lb />
they played. It's tough because we<lb />
didn't play very well but yet we<lb />
still had the opportunity to win.<lb />
"What was disappointing<lb />
about it was I don't think that we<lb />
followed our plan. We have a plan<lb />
on how to win. Penalties hurt<lb />
us in this game. We had three<lb />
holds and a personal foul. We<lb />
had 60 yards of offensive called<lb />
back in penalties. I think that the<lb />
penalties were part of on of the<lb />
struggles that we had.<lb />
"I thought our red zone pro-<lb />
ductivity was very poor. We were<lb />
inside the ten-yard line three<lb />
times and only got on field goal<lb />
out of it. We were not able to push<lb />
the ball in. It is very difficult to<lb />
win when you turn the ball over<lb />
three times.<lb />
"It was very disappointing<lb />
how we played the first half. I<lb />
was very pleased with the way<lb />
the offense responded to the<lb />
challenge we gave them at half<lb />
time. We came in at halftime and<lb />
tried to settle everybody down<lb />
and let them catch their breath<lb />
a little bit. I thought offensively<lb />
we played much better than we<lb />
did in the first half. We still had<lb />
a turn over but I thought we<lb />
played better.<lb />
"Even with all the mistakes<lb />
we made we still had an oppor-<lb />
tunity to win. I think that speaks<lb />
volumes for these players' atti-<lb />
tudes and their competitive<lb />
nature. My eighth grade football<lb />
coach text messaged me on Sat-<lb />
urday night and he talked about<lb />
that being disappointed is a part<lb />
of life but being discouragement<lb />
is a choice. Right now this was a<lb />
disappointing loss but we are not<lb />
going to get discouraged, we are<lb />
not going to turn on each other<lb />
and we are not going to fall apart<lb />
from within. When things get<lb />
difficult that's when its time to<lb />
circle the wagon, to bring every-<lb />
body in tighter together, and to<lb />
form a bond and a closeness. The<lb />
only way to get through it all is<lb />
to go out there on those practice<lb />
fields, work hard and to continue<lb />
to try and get better<lb />
On Defensive Play: "I thought<lb />
we played extremely well on<lb />
defense. Our defense was prob-<lb />
ably our second-best effort since<lb />
I've been here. It was second-best<lb />
to the West Virginia game we<lb />
played a year ago. Two months<lb />
ago if you looked it at and you<lb />
mention Scotty Robinson, C.J.<lb />
Wilson, Wendell Chavis, Zach<lb />
Slate, Van Eskridge, Quentin<lb />
Cotton, Jeremy Chambliss, Fred<lb />
Wilson and Jarrett Wiggins,<lb />
most of these guys nobody had<lb />
ever heard of. These are the guys<lb />
that are not only starting but are<lb />
really making plays for us in the<lb />
front seven. It was really excit-<lb />
ing to see these younger players<lb />
coming along. Defensively we<lb />
could get better. We made some<lb />
mistakes and we will continue to<lb />
improve. I thought overall they<lb />
played extremely physical and<lb />
they played tough. It was one of<lb />
our best efforts against the run,<lb />
they only averaged three yards<lb />
a carry. Defensively we played<lb />
pretty well against a very senior<lb />
laden football team<lb />
On Offensive Play: "When<lb />
you look at it from an offensive<lb />
standpoint it was very frustrat-<lb />
ing. The first half was probably<lb />
one of the worst halves of football<lb />
we played since I've been here.<lb />
We did not play well early in this<lb />
football game and I give UAB a<lb />
lot of credit because they had a lot<lb />
to do with that.<lb />
"I talked during the week<lb />
about how I don't like to play<lb />
a conference game this early<lb />
a because there is an element of<lb />
1 surprise. You only have one game<lb />
on film and you don't really know<lb />
what you are going to get. All the<lb />
sudden you get out there on game<lb />
day and haven't had the opportu-<lb />
nity to coach your players up on<lb />
what they are going to see and<lb />
what they are going to expect. I<lb />
give them (UAB) a lot of credit<lb />
for what they did. They played<lb />
about seven different coverage's<lb />
in the secondary and they mixed<lb />
them all up. That made it very<lb />
difficult to attack what they were<lb />
doing because you could never<lb />
really get a beat on it. They were<lb />
determined not to give James<lb />
(Pinkney) the same coverage<lb />
twice in a row. They mixed some<lb />
things up. They played man cov-<lb />
erage on Aundrae (Allison) and<lb />
they doubled him. They rolled<lb />
some things in the field too deep<lb />
and they created an lot of confu-<lb />
sion and I give them credit<lb />
On Memphis: "Memphis has<lb />
a very good football team. I<lb />
think they are a lot different than<lb />
they were a year ago in a lot of<lb />
respects. When you look at their<lb />
defense about the only thing that<lb />
you can guarantee is that they<lb />
will have eleven guys on defense.<lb />
They may seem like they have<lb />
twelve or thirteen at times with<lb />
they way that they run around.<lb />
They may have one defensive<lb />
lineman or they may have eight<lb />
defensive linemen. I think that<lb />
we are going to have to be very<lb />
simplistic in our approach with<lb />
what we ask our guys to do up<lb />
front with all the confusion they<lb />
try to create. They are similar<lb />
to us in that they are young up<lb />
front in the front seven, and they<lb />

ECU's Dougherty named to<lb />
Ray Guy Watch List<lb />
see HOLTZ page A10<lb />
(ECU SID) ECU senior<lb />
punter Ryan Dougherty was<lb />
named to the 2006 Ray Guy<lb />
Award Watch List, which is given<lb />
annually to the nation's top colle-<lb />
giate punter, the Greater Augusta<lb />
Sports Council announced today.<lb />
The Orlando, Fla. native, who<lb />
was named to the watch list in<lb />
2004 and 2005, currently ranks<lb />
fourth all-time in Conference<lb />
USA in career punts (194) and<lb />
career punt yards (8,201). In the<lb />
season opener against Navy, he<lb />
became just the fourth punter on<lb />
C-USA history to amass 8,000<lb />
with his second punt of the game<lb />
(54 yards).<lb />
Heading into his senior<lb />
season, Dougherty was rated as<lb />
the 13th best punter nationally<lb />
and a preseason second-team All<lb />
C-USA selection by Phil Steele<lb />
Magazine. For his career, the<lb />
two-time All C-USA performer<lb />
(2003-04) is averaging 42.3<lb />
yards per punt and has placed<lb />
56 punts inside the opponent's<lb />
20-yard line.<lb />
The Ray Guy award is pre-<lb />
sented to the nation's best col-<lb />
legiate punter as determined by<lb />
a national selection committee<lb />
made up of sports writers, college<lb />
football coaches, sports informa-<lb />
tion directors, former punters<lb />
and members designated by the<lb />
Greater Augusta Sports Coun-<lb />
cil. Among the statistics used<lb />
to identify the Ray Guy Award<lb />
winner are total yardage punted,<lb />
number of times a punt is downed<lb />
or kicked out of bounds inside<lb />
the opponents 20-yard line, net<lb />
average, average returned yard-<lb />
age, and percentage of punts not<lb />
returned. It is also of importance<lb />
for the award winner to display<lb />
team leadership, self-discipline,<lb />
and to have a positive impact on<lb />
the team's success.<lb />
The Ray Guy Award watch<lb />
list will be narrowed to ten semi-<lb />
finalists in early-November. The<lb />
national voting body will then<lb />
vote for the top three finalists<lb />
who will be announced at the<lb />
end of November. The winner<lb />
will be announced live on ESPN<lb />
during the Home Depot College<lb />
Football Awards show, which will<lb />

Athletic Director Terry Holland<lb />

Amato's bells and whistles<lb />
include N.C. State's Carter-Finley<lb />

Wichita State's Ryan Spears<lb />

who set a tournament record and<lb />
just missed the course record<lb />
with a second round 63 yesterday,<lb />
shot a 67 on Tuesday to rally<lb />

Wisconsin, which had three<lb />

THE EAST CAROLINIAN SPORTS<lb />
WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 2006<lb />
HOLTZ<lb />
continued from A9<lb />
are experienced in the secondary<lb />
because everybody returned from<lb />
a year ago. On offensive they are<lb />
different in that they have two<lb />
very good quarterbacks that were<lb />
injured last year that they had<lb />
the opportunity to red shirt last<lb />
year. They much more balance as<lb />
a football team than they did a<lb />
year ago. They are more heavily<lb />
throw oriented than they are run<lb />
oriented. They are rushing for<lb />
about 125 yards a game and they<lb />
are throwing for about 275 so they<lb />
are averaging about 400 yards a<lb />
game on offense. This is a very<lb />
good team an it will be a great<lb />
challenge for us<lb />
On ECU Squad Players: "The<lb />
kicking game I'm starting to feel is<lb />
very solid. Since I've been here we<lb />
have a had a very good kicker in<lb />
Robert Lee and we have had a very<lb />
good punter in Ryan Dougherty.<lb />
What I don't think has been very<lb />
solid here are our coverage teams<lb />
and our kicking teams have been<lb />
very good. I think that it is an area<lb />
that we need to improve. We came<lb />
up with something this summer<lb />
where we were going to try and<lb />
develop a dirty dozen. We were<lb />
going to try and develop guys that<lb />
were back ups that were second<lb />
team guys that wouldn't normally<lb />
get an opportunity to play many<lb />
plays in the game and put them on<lb />
special teams and develop a pride<lb />
in it. I thought for one of the first<lb />
times that our kicking game, our<lb />
coverage, our punt protection, our<lb />
kickoff coverage, and our kickoff<lb />
return is really starting to get<lb />
close. I feel like our kicking game<lb />
is becoming a solid part of what<lb />
we are doing right now. We aren't<lb />
making anything happen yet, but<lb />
at the same time we are not hurt-<lb />
ing our football team from a spe-<lb />
cial teams standpoint. Some of the<lb />
guys right now that are making<lb />
up the dirty dozen are, Markeith<lb />
McQueen, Jay Sonnhalter, Kort<lb />
Shankweiler, Herman Best, Jerek<lb />
Hewett, Lorenzo Osborne, and<lb />
Van Eskridge. We are trying to<lb />
develop that as a group of starters<lb />
just like we have on offense and<lb />
defense<lb />
On Aundrae Allison's perfor-<lb />
mance: "Their game plan was not<lb />
designed to take Aundrae away.<lb />
They had some things where<lb />
they could have doubled Aundrae<lb />
is he was hurting them and they<lb />
mixed those in there. It was one of<lb />
those nights. I think Aundrae was<lb />
frustrated but with not having a<lb />
catch or not getting the ball. His<lb />
frustration was that he wasn't<lb />
making the plays. James threw<lb />
a couple of balls high early and<lb />
they would have been nice catches.<lb />
They were plays that Aundrae<lb />
AllisonJ expects to make and<lb />
he was frustrated with himself.<lb />
Other guys started to step up. We<lb />
are not the Aundrae Allison show<lb />
anymore. Steven Rogers, Bobby<lb />
Good, Kevin Roach and Davon<lb />
Drew are all starting to become<lb />
weapons for us and are stepping<lb />
up an making some plays for us. I<lb />
think his frustration was that he<lb />
wasn't performing to a level he<lb />
wanted to perform to and not one<lb />
of its all about me and my record<lb />
of how many games in a row I<lb />
catch a pass. I think that Aundrae<lb />
Allison would turn in a no catch<lb />
performance for a win<lb />
On Dominique Lindsay and<lb />
team injuries: "Dominique Lind-<lb />
say went out of the game with<lb />
and injury to his knee. He has<lb />
an MRI today and then we will<lb />
find out the depth of that injury<lb />
a little bit more. He was not able<lb />
to go back in the game. Other<lb />
tha that there was bumps and<lb />
bruises. Nothing that should<lb />
keep anybody out of a game. The<lb />
positive side of the injury report<lb />
is that Shauntae Hunt and Pierre<lb />
Bell have been cleared for practice<lb />
this week, lorman Whitley had<lb />
shoulder surgery last Friday and<lb />
with Dominique Lindsay being a<lb />
question mark for this week, Chris<lb />
Johnson and Brandon Fractious<lb />
will carry the load<lb />
On Chris Johnson's perfor-<lb />
mance: "I thought he played<lb />
better Saturday than the week<lb />
before. In camp we talked about<lb />
how we need to run the ball more<lb />
and be more decisive. His biggest<lb />
problem right now is that Chris<lb />
Johnson is always looking for<lb />
the home run ball. Chris gets in<lb />
the backfield and he is dancing<lb />
too much and cutting too much.<lb />
I will live with whatever decision<lb />
he makes as long as it is decisive.<lb />
I think he played better but we<lb />
need to grow on that. He is still<lb />
not were he needs to be as far as<lb />
his decision-making. He wants to<lb />
do well and get the running game<lb />
on track but in doing so he hurts<lb />
himself. We just have to keep<lb />
working with him and get him<lb />
working downhill<lb />
On Pat Dosh's play: "(Pat)<lb />
Dosh is one of those guys that is<lb />
playing on a lot of special teams<lb />
and doing a lot of good things.<lb />
We felt we were better suited to<lb />
turn and spread the field than we<lb />
are to turn and get in just two<lb />
backs an try and play a power<lb />
running game<lb />
VOLLEYBALL<lb />
continued from A10<lb />
Kelley Wernet, left, goes for a kill. Heidi Krug, right, records another assist as ECU takes down Campbell<lb />
Junior middle Mocker Mignon<lb />
Dubenion added 10 kills to Wer-<lb />
nert's 13. Wernert also led the<lb />
team in digs with seven, followed<lb />
by Stephanie Turner and Trish<lb />
Monroe, Krug's co-captain, who<lb />
both had six.<lb />
After the game, Krug and<lb />
Wernert expressed displeasure<lb />
with the performance of the team<lb />
in the second game.<lb />
"Game two we just completely<lb />
dropped to their level said Krug.<lb />
"We weren't playing our game<lb />
"We started falling to their level<lb />
of play Wernert concurred.<lb />
Between the second and third<lb />
games, head coach Chris Rushing<lb />
and his staff began to become<lb />
more vocal with the team. In the<lb />
third game Rushing became more<lb />
and more vocal moving closer to<lb />
the court to instruct his team.<lb />
Rushing noted that he thought<lb />
the team seemed to relax a little<lb />
bit after the first game and let the<lb />
Seahawks get back into the match.<lb />
"After the second game we<lb />
were just like, 'We know we are a<lb />
way better team than that and we<lb />
took care of business Krug said.<lb />
As for Rushing approaching the<lb />
court, Krug said "He was trying<lb />
to light a fire under us<lb />
Rushing was a little more<lb />
descriptive.<lb />
"In game three I kind of<lb />
threatened them a little bit<lb />
Rushing said with a laugh.<lb />
"We threatened them with<lb />
some running stuff. I said 'If we<lb />
do not come out with some fire<lb />
and intensity in game three and<lb />
come out on top with the big<lb />
victory, something was going to<lb />
happen Luckily for the team,<lb />
Rushing has relented on that.<lb />
"That something's not going to<lb />
happen now because I though that<lb />
they came out playing hard for<lb />
that third game<lb />
